Semi-crystalline polymers with supramolecular synergistic interactions: from mechanical toughening to dynamic smart materials

Semi-crystalline polymers (SCPs) with anisotropic amorphous and crystalline domains as the basic skeleton are ubiquitous from natural products to synthetic polymers. The combination of chemically incompatible hard and soft phases contributes to unique thermal and mechanical properties. The further introduction of supramolecular interactions as noncovalently interacting crystal phases and soft dynamic crosslinking sites can synergize with covalent polymer chains, thereby enabling effective energy dissipation and dynamic rearrangement in hierarchical superstructures. Therefore, this review will focus on the design principles of SCPs by discussing supramolecular construction strategies and state-of-the-art functional applications from mechanical toughening to sophisticated functions such as dynamic adaptivity, shape memory, ion transport, etc. Current challenges and further opportunities are discussed to provide an overview of possible future directions and potential material applications.

New Advances in Covalent Network Polymers via Dynamic Covalent Chemistry

Covalent network polymers, as materials composed of atoms interconnected by covalent bonds in a continuous network, are known for their thermal and chemical stability. Over the past two decades, these materials have undergone significant transformations, gaining properties such as malleability, environmental responsiveness, recyclability, crystallinity, and customizable porosity, enabled by the development and integration of dynamic covalent chemistry (DCvC). In this review, we explore the innovative realm of covalent network polymers by focusing on the recent advances achieved through the application of DCvC. We start by examining the history and fundamental principles of DCvC, detailing its inception and core concepts and noting its key role in reversible covalent bond formation. Then the reprocessability of covalent network polymers enabled by DCvC is thoroughly discussed, starting from the significant milestones that marked the evolution of these polymers and progressing to their current trends and applications. The influence of DCvC on the crystallinity of covalent network polymers is then reviewed, covering their bond diversity, synthesis techniques, and functionalities. In the concluding section, we address the current challenges faced in the field of covalent network polymers and speculates on potential future directions.

3D Directional Assembly of Liquid Crystal Molecules

The precise construction of hierarchically long-range ordered structures using molecules as fundamental building blocks can fully harness their anisotropy and potential. However, the 3D, high-precision, and single-step directional assembly of molecules is a long-pending challenge. Here, a 3D directional molecular assembly strategy via femtosecond laser direct writing (FsLDW) is proposed and the feasibility of this approach using liquid crystal (LC) molecules as an illustrative example is demonstrated. The physical mechanism for femtosecond (fs) laser-induced assembly of LC molecules is investigated, and precise 3D arbitrary assembly of LC molecules is achieved by defining the discretized laser scanning pathway. Additionally, an LC-based Fresnel zone plate array with polarization selection and colorization imaging functions is fabricated to further illustrate the potential of this method. This study not only introduces a 3D high-resolution alignment method for LC-based functional devices but also establishes a universal protocol for the precise 3D directional assembly of anisotropic molecules.

Biological applications of lipoic acid-based polymers: an old material with new promise

Lipoic acid (LA) is a versatile antioxidant that has been used in the treatment of various oxidation-reduction diseases over the past 70 years. Owing to its large five-membered ring tension, the dynamic disulfide bond of LA is highly active, enabling the formation of poly(lipoic acid) (PLA) via ring-opening polymerization (ROP). Herein, we first summarize disulfide-mediated ROP polymerization strategies, providing basic routes for designing and preparing PLA-based materials. PLA, as a biologically derived, low toxic, and easily modified material, possesses dynamic disulfide bonds and universal non-covalent carboxyl groups. We also shed light on the biomedical applications of PLA-based materials based on their biological and structural features and further divide recent works into six categories: antibacterial, anti-inflammation, anticancer, adhesive, flexible electronics, and 3D-printed tissue scaffolds. Finally, the challenges and future prospects associated with the biomedical applications of PLA are discussed.

Passerini polymerization of α-lipoic acid for dynamically crosslinking 1,2-dithiolane-functionalized polymers

Passerini polymerization using naturally occurring α-lipoic acid as a raw material yields polyamides with 1,2-dithiolane functional groups in a one-step reaction. The polyamide exhibits characteristics of an adaptable dynamically crosslinked network through reversible ring-opening reaction of 1,2-dithiolane, enabling self-healing, reusable strong adhesion, and regeneration through decrosslinking and re-crosslinking.

Facile Solvent-Free Fabrication of All-Small-Molecule Supramolecular Photothermal Bioadhesive for Sutureless Wound Closure

Achieving underwater adhesion possesses a significant challenge, primarily due to the presence of interfacial water, which restricts the potential applications of adhesives. In this study, we present a straightforward and environmentally friendly one-pot approach for synthesizing a solvent-free supramolecular TPFe bioadhesive composed of thioctic acid, proanthocyanidins, and FeCl3. The bioadhesive exhibits excellent biocompatibility and photothermal antibacterial properties and demonstrates effective adhesion on various substrates in both wet and dry environments. Importantly, the adhesive strength of this bioadhesive on steel exceeds 1.2 MPa and that on porcine skin exceeds 100 kPa, which is greater than the adhesive strength of most reported bioadhesives. In addition, the bioadhesive exhibits the ability to effectively halt bleeding, close wounds promptly, and promote wound healing in the rat skin wound model. Therefore, the TPFe bioadhesive has potential as a medical bioadhesive for halting bleeding quickly and promoting wound healing in the biomedical field. This study provides a new idea for the development of bioadhesives with firm wet adhesion.

The Unprecedented Biodegradable Polyzwitterion: A Removal-Free Patch for Accelerating Infected Diabetic Wound Healing

Zwitterionic polymers have emerged as an important class of biomaterials to construct wound dressings and antifouling coatings over the past decade due to their excellent hydrophilicity. However, all the reported zwitterionic polymers as wound dressings are nondegradable because of noncleavable carbon─carbon bonding backbones, and must be removed periodically after treatment to avoid hypoxia in the wound, thus leading to potential secondary injury. In this work, a biodegradable polyzwitterion patch is fabricated for the first time by ring-opening polymerization of carboxybetaine dithiolane (CBDS), which is self-crosslinked via inter-amide hydrogen bonds and zwitterionic dipole-dipole interactions on the side chains. The unprecedented polyCBDS (PCBDS) patch demonstrates enough ductility owing to the intermolecular physical interactions to fully cover irregular wounds, also showing excellent biodegradability and antifouling performance resulted from the existence of disulfide bonds and carboxybetaine groups. Besides, the PCBDS degradation-induced released CBDS owns potent antioxidant and antibacterial activities. This PCBDS patch is used as a diabetic wound dressing, inhibiting bacterial adhesion on the external surface, and its degradation products can exactly kill bacteria and scavenge excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) at the wound site to regulate local microenvironment, including regulation of cytokine express and macrophage polarization, accelerating infected diabetic wound repair, and also avoiding the potential secondary injury.

A Rational Design of Bio-Derived Disulfide CANs for Wearable Capacitive Pressure Sensor

Classic approaches to integrate flexible capacitive sensor performance are to on-demand microstructuring dielectric layers and to adjust dielectric material compositions via the introduction of insoluble carbon additives (to increase sensitivity) or dynamic interactions (to achieve self-healing). However, the sensor's enhanced performances often come with increased material complexity, discouraging its circular economy. Herein, a new intrinsic self-healable, closed-loop recyclable dielectric layer material, a fully nature-derived dynamic covalent poly(disulfide) decorated with rich H bonding and metal-catechol complexations is introduced. The polymer network possesses a mechanically ductile character with an Arrhenius-type temperature-dependent viscoelasticity. The assembled capacitive pressure sensor is able to achieve a sensitivity of up to 9.26 kPa-1, fast response/recovery time of 32/24 ms, and can deliver consistent signals of continuous consecutive cycles even after being self-healed or closed-loop recycled for real-time detection of human motions. This is expected to be of high interest for current capacitive sensing research to move toward a life-like, high performance, and circular economy direction.

Fast-relaxing hydrogels with reversibly tunable mechanics for dynamic cancer cell culture

The mechanics of the tumor microenvironment (TME) significantly impact disease progression and the efficacy of anti-cancer therapeutics. While it is recognized that advanced in vitro cancer models will benefit cancer research, none of the current engineered extracellular matrices (ECM) adequately recapitulate the highly dynamic TME. Through integrating reversible boronate-ester bonding and dithiolane ring-opening polymerization, we fabricated synthetic polymer hydrogels with tumor-mimetic fast relaxation and reversibly tunable elastic moduli. Importantly, the crosslinking and dynamic stiffening of matrix mechanics were achieved in the absence of a photoinitiator, often the source of cytotoxicity. Central to this strategy was Poly(PEGA-co-LAA-co-AAPBA) (PELA), a highly defined polymer synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. PELA contains dithiolane for initiator-free gel crosslinking, stiffening, and softening, as well as boronic acid for complexation with diol-containing polymers to give rise to tunable viscoelasticity. PELA hydrogels were highly cytocompatible for dynamic culture of patient-derived pancreatic cancer cells. It was found that the fast-relaxing matrix induced mesenchymal phenotype of cancer cells, and dynamic matrix stiffening restricted tumor spheroid growth. Moreover, this new dynamic viscoelastic hydrogel system permitted sequential stiffening and softening to mimic the physical changes of TME.

Wet environment-induced adhesion and softening of coenzyme-based polymer elastic patch for treating periodontitis

Periodontitis, a common chronic inflammatory disease caused by pathogenic bacteria, can be treated with diverse biomaterials by loading drugs, cytokines or proteins. However, these biomaterials often show unsatisfactory therapeutic efficiency due to their poor adhesion, short residence time in the wet and dynamic oral cavity and emerging drug resistance. Here we report a wet-responsive methacrylated gelatin (GelMA)-stabilized co-enzyme polymer poly(α-lipoic acid) (PolyLA)-based elastic patch with water-induced adhesion and softening features. In PolyLA-GelMA, the multiple covalent and hydrogen-bonding crosslinking between PolyLA and GelMA prevent PolyLA depolymerization and slow down the dissociation of PolyLA in water, allowing durable adhesion to oral periodontal tissue and continuous release of LA-based bioactive small molecule in periodontitis wound without resorting external drugs. Compared with the undifferentiated adhesion behavior of traditional adhesives, this wet-responsive patch demonstrates a favorable periodontal pocket insertion ability due to its non-adhesion and rigidity in dry environment. In vitro studies reveal that PolyLA-GelMA patch exhibits satisfactory wet tissue adhesion, antibacterial, blood compatibility and ROS scavenging abilities. In the model of rat periodontitis, the PolyLA-GelMA patch inhibits alveolar bone resorption and accelerates the periodontitis healing by regulating the inflammatory microenvironment. This biomacromolecule-stabilized coenzyme polymer patch provides a new option to promote periodontitis treatment.

Microcage flame retardants with complete recyclability and durability via reversible interfacial locking engineering

Flame retardants are effective in protecting materials from fire but pose environmental challenges due to limited recyclability. Urgently needed for circular material economy are new flame retardants that are chemically recyclable and durable. Here, we report a new facile and scalable strategy for engineering reversible microcages with infinite chemical recyclability to starting monomers, exceptional durability, and versatile flame retardancy. This is achieved through a highly synergistic hierarchical assembly of easily obtainable phosphoric acid and Cu2+ monomers. By leveraging dynamic reversible assembly networks, microcages can be circularly and infinitely dissociated into starting monomers via eco-friendly pH adjustment. Remarkable recovery rates of 92% for phosphoric acid and 96.2% for Cu2+ monomers are achieved, while the separated virgin matrix undergoes conventional chemical recycling, facilitating reformulation and seamless reintroduction into new supply chains as needed. Notably, when integrated with matrix-like surfaces, microcage clasp matrices tightly engage through in situ formed interfacial locking structures, showcasing outstanding flame-retardant efficiency, prolonged durability in hydrothermal aging, and extensive applicability across diverse polymeric materials such as polyurethane, epoxy resin, and polycarbonate. This study emphasizes a novel, straightforward, and scalable chemical platform, utilizing reversible interfacial locking engineering, for the development of flame retardants that are not only infinitely recyclable but also durable and broadly applicable.

Thermo-growing ion clusters enabled healing strengthening and tough adhesion for highly reliable skin electronics

Self-healing and self-adhesion capacities are essential for many modern applications such as skin-interfaced electronics for improving longevity and reliability. However, the self-healing efficiency and adhesive toughness of most synthetic polymers are limited to their original network, making reliability under dynamic deformation still challenging. Herein, inspired by the growth of living organisms, a highly stretchable supramolecular elastomer based on thermo-responsive ion clusters and a dynamic polysulfide backbone was developed. Attributed to the synergic growth of ion clusters and dynamic exchange of disulfide bonds, the elastomer exhibited unique healing strengthening (healing efficiency >200%) and thermo-enhanced tough adhesion (interfacial toughness >500 J m-2) performances. To prove its practical application in highly reliable skin electronics, we further composited the elastomer with a zwitterion to prepare a highly conductive ionic elastomer and applied it in wearable strain sensing and long-term electrophysiological detection. This work provides a new avenue to realize high reliability in skin interfaced electronics.

Small Ionic-Liquid-Based Molecule Drives Strong Adhesives

Nature has inspired scientists to fabricate adhesive materials for applications in many burgeoning areas. However, it is still a significant challenge to develop small-molecule adhesives with high-strength, low-temperature and recyclable properties, although these merits are of great interest in various aspects. Herein, we report a series of strong adhesives based on low-molecular-weight molecular solids driven by the terminal modification of ionic liquids (ILs) and subsequent supramolecular self-assembly. The emergence of high strength and liquid-to-solid transitions for these supramolecular aggregates relies on modifying IL with a high melting point motif and enriching the types of noncovalent interactions in the original ILs. Using this strategy, we demonstrate that our IL-based molecular solids can efficiently obtain a high adhesion strength (up to 8.95 MPa). Importantly, we elucidate the mechanism underlying the reversible and strong adhesion enabled by monomer-to-polymer transitions. These fundamental findings provide guidance for the design of high-performance supramolecular adhesive materials.

Dynamic Chemistry Toolbox for Advanced Sustainable Materials

Developing dynamic chemistry for polymeric materials offers chemical solutions to solve key problems associated with current plastics. Mechanical performance and dynamic function are equally important in material design because the former determines the application scope and the latter enables chemical recycling and hence sustainability. However, it is a long-term challenge to balance the subtle trade-off between mechanical robustness and dynamic properties in a single material. The rise of dynamic chemistry, including supramolecular and dynamic covalent chemistry, provides many opportunities and versatile molecular tools for designing constitutionally dynamic materials that can adapt, repair, and recycle. Facing the growing social need for developing advanced sustainable materials without compromising properties, recent progress showing how the toolbox of dynamic chemistry can be explored to enable high-performance sustainable materials by molecular engineering strategies is discussed here. The state of the art and recent milestones are summarized and discussed, followed by an outlook toward future opportunities and challenges present in this field.

Wearable and Recyclable Water-Toleration Sensor Derived from Lipoic Acid

Flexible wearable sensors recently have made significant progress in human motion detection and health monitoring. However, most sensors still face challenges in terms of single detection targets, single application environments, and non-recyclability. Lipoic acid (LA) shows a great application prospect in soft materials due to its unique properties. Herein, ionic conducting elastomers (ICEs) based on polymerizable deep eutectic solvents consisting of LA and choline chloride are prepared. In addition to the good mechanical strength, high transparency, ionic conductivity, and self-healing efficiency, the ICEs exhibit swelling-strengthening behavior and enhanced adhesion strength in underwater environments due to the moisture-induced association of poly(LA) hydrophobic chains, thus making it possible for underwater sensing applications, such as underwater communication. As a strain sensor, it exhibits highly sensitive strain response with repeatability and durability, enabling the monitoring of both large and fine human motions, including joint movements, facial expressions, and pulse waves. Furthermore, due to the enhancement of ion mobility at higher temperatures, it also possesses excellent temperature-sensing performance. Notably, the ICEs can be fully recycled and reused as a new strain/temperature sensor through heating. This study provides a novel strategy for enhancing the mechanical strength of poly(LA) and the fabrication of multifunctional sensors.

Dynamics of Molecular Self-Assembly of Short Peptides at Liquid-Solid Interfaces - Effect of Charged Amino Acid Point Mutations

Self-organizing solid-binding peptides on atomically flat solid surfaces offer a unique bio/nano hybrid platform, useful for understanding the basic nature of biology/solid coupling and their practical applications. The surface behavior of peptides is determined by their molecular folding, which is influenced by various factors and is challenging to study. Here, the effect of charged amino acids is studied on the self-assembly behavior of a directed evolution selected graphite-binding dodecapeptide on graphite surface. Two mutations, M6 and M8, are designed to introduce negatively and positively charged moieties, respectively, at the anchoring domain of the wild-type (WT) peptide, affecting both binding and assembly. The questions addressed here are whether mutant peptides exhibit molecular crystal formation and demonstrate molecular recognition on the solid surface based on the specific mutations. Frequency-modulated atomic force microscopy is used for observations of the surface processes dynamically in water at molecular resolution over several hours at the ambient. The results indicate that while the mutants display distinct folding and surface behavior, each homogeneously nucleates and forms 2D self-organized patterns, akin to the WT peptide. However, their growth dynamics, domain formation, and crystalline lattice structures differ significantly. The results represent a significant step toward the rational design of bio/solid interfaces, potent facilitators of a variety of future implementations.

Organ/Cell-Selective Intracellular Delivery of Biologics via N-Acetylated Galactosamine-Functionalized Polydisulfide Conjugates

Biologics, including proteins and antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), face significant challenges when it comes to achieving intracellular delivery within specific organs or cells through systemic administrations. In this study, we present a novel approach for delivering proteins and ASOs to liver cells, both in vitro and in vivo, using conjugates that tether N-acetylated galactosamine (GalNAc)-functionalized, cell-penetrating polydisulfides (PDSs). The method involves the thiol-bearing cargo-mediated ring-opening polymerization of GalNAc-functionalized lipoamide monomers through the so-called aggregation-induced polymerization, leading to the formation of site-specific protein/ASO-PDS conjugates with narrow dispersity. The hepatocyte-selective intracellular delivery of the conjugates arises from a combination of factors, including first GalNAc binding with ASGPR receptors on liver cells, leading to cell immobilization, and the subsequent thiol-disulfide exchange occurring on the cell surface, promoting internalization. Our findings emphasize the critical role of the close proximity of the PDS backbone to the cell surface, as it governs the success of thiol-disulfide exchange and, consequently, cell penetration. These conjugates hold tremendous potential in overcoming the various biological barriers encountered during systemic and cell-specific delivery of biomacromolecular cargos, opening up new avenues for the diagnosis and treatment of a range of liver-targeting diseases.

Construction of durable antibacterial cellulose textiles through grafting dynamic disulfide-containing amino-compound and nanosilver deposition

Cotton textile is very comfortable to wear, and also provides an ideal environment for bacterial propagation, easily causing harm to human health. In order to address this issue, various antibacterial techniques are employed for cotton finishing. However, some processes are complex and involve the use of environmentally unfriendly chemicals. In this work, a durable and efficient antibacterial cotton fabric was prepared via grafting of an amino-compound containing dynamic disulfide bonds, and then in-situ deposition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Briefly, the reactive α-lipoic acid-modified polyethyleneimine (mPEI) was introduced to the cotton fibers via thiol-ene click reaction. Subsequently, the amino groups and dynamically-generated sulfhydryl groups in the mPEI molecules were used to initiate the ultrafast reduction of silver ions without the participation of additional reductant, constructing a stable antibacterial layer on fiber surface. The results reveal that the amino and thiol groups of mPEI could form coordination bonds with the deposited silver nanoparticles, and the antibacterial ability of AgNP@cotton-g-mPEI fabric remains at a high level even after 20 washing cycles. After 30 min of contact with Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), the antibacterial rates against both bacteria reached 99.99 %. Meanwhile, the network matrix constructed by the recombination of the dynamic disulfide bonds in mPEI endows the cotton fabric with detectable wrinkle resistance and encouraging anti-ultraviolet effect. The present work provides a novel alternative for preparation of durable and efficient antibacterial textiles.

Multifunctional photothermally responsive hydrogel as an effective whole-process management platform to accelerate chronic diabetic wound healing

The management of chronic diabetic wounds is a complex issue that requires wound repair, regulation of inflammatory levels, and intervention to prevent bacterial infection. To address this issue, we developed a multifunctional photothermally responsive hydrogel (PAG-CuS) as an effective platform for managing the entire wound-healing process, including promoting wound healing, providing anti-inflammatory therapy, and performing photothermal sterilization. Constructed through copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA), methacrylic anhydride-modified gelatin (GelMA), and lipoic acid sodium (LAS) coated copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS@LAS), PAG-CuS possessed a porous three-dimensional structure that promoted cell adhesion and had a substantial water-holding capacity. Additionally, the internal CuS@LAS not only conferred photothermal antibacterial properties to the hydrogel but also served as physical cross-linking agents, thus enhancing its mechanical strength. Under the NIR-induced photothermal effect, the porous hydrogel liberates CuS@LAS, and later CuS@LAS expels LAS via micelle deassembly to eliminate intracellular ROS. This results in the down-regulation of MMP-9 expression, promoting ECM production and facilitating wound healing. Meanwhile, the release of Cu2+ from PAG-CuS could enhance CD31 expression in endothelial cells, promoting microvessel formation, which is crucial for wound healing. In the diabetic wound model of GK rats, the PAG-CuS hydrogel reduced ROS levels, increased microvessel count, improved epithelialization, and enhanced wound healing. Therefore, this versatile photothermal hydrogel has the potential to be applied in sterilization, scavenging free radicals, and promoting angiogenesis, making it an effective and comprehensive solution to manage the challenges of diabetic wounds. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Assessment of functional recovery and timely adjustment of treatment strategy is critical in the management of chronic diabetic wounds. In this work, we prepared PAG-CuS composite hydrogels by integrating in situ reduction, chemical crosslinking, and nanoenhancement techniques. The near-infrared light-induced photothermal effect of PAG-CuS gel rapidly kills bacteria at the lesion site, and the generated heat simultaneously promotes the multilevel release of LAS from the gel, which could regulate the levels of ROS and MMP-9 to promote extracellular matrix formation. In addition, the Cu2+ released from the gel can promote the formation of blood vessels to improve blood oxygenation. Therefore, this project proposes a synergistic solution to realize the whole process of management to accelerate chronic diabetic wound healing.

A Self-Assemble Supramolecular Film with Humidity Visualization Enabled by Clusteroluminescence

Clusteroluminescence (CL) has recently gained significant attention due to its unique through-space interactions associated with a high dependence on the aggregation of subgroups. These distinct features could easily transform the stimuli into visual fluorescence and monitor the fluctuation of the environment but have not received sufficient attention before. In this work, supramolecular films are designed based on the neutralization reaction of anhydride groups and the self-assembly of dynamic covalent disulfide bonds in NaOH aqueous solution. The self-assembly of hydrophilic carboxylate chromophores and hydrophobic disulfide-containing five-membered rings could be observed by the variation of the aggregation state of carboxylate in CL. Furthermore, the dynamic cross-linking films obtained with water-sensitive carboxylate chromophores could alter the aggregation distance stimulated by surrounding water vapor, causing the emission wavelength to change from 534 to 508 nm by varying the relative humidity. This work not only provides an approach to monitor the self-assembly of clusteroluminogens but also offers new strategies for designing stimuli-responsive materials that utilize the intrinsic features of CL.

A soft multifunctional film from chitosan modified with disulfide bond cross-links and prepared by a simple method

Chitosan was modified with thioctic acid and used to prepare soft films. As confirmed by FTIR and XPS measurements, a condensation reaction occurred between the amino groups in the chitosan and the carboxyl groups in the lipoic acid to form amide bonds in the modified chitosan. Films were then prepared by casting at ambient conditions, and the effects of the chemical modification on the physical-mechanical, antibacterial, and thermal properties of the films were investigated. The results showed that the tensile strength, flexibility and recovery performance of the modified films were significantly different from those of the unmodified films. For example, the Young's modulus of a pure chitosan film was 2600 MPa, while the modified films were much more flexible with a Young's modulus as low as 32.5 MPa. Moreover, the modified chitosan films were not dissolved or damaged by common organic solvents or in highly acidic (pH 1) or highly basic (pH 13) conditions. The modified films also showed good antibacterial activity against both E coli and S aureus with inhibition rates of almost 100 %. These desirable properties suggest that the modified chitosan films prepared here have possible application prospects in flexible devices and packaging.

Controlled and Regioselective Ring-Opening Polymerization for Poly(disulfide)s by Anion-Binding Catalysis

Poly(disulfide)s are an emerging class of sulfur-containing polymers with applications in medicine, energy, and functional materials. However, the constituent dynamic covalent S-S bond is highly reactive in the presence of the sulfide (RS-) anion, imposing a persistent challenge to control the polymerization. Here, we report an anion-binding approach to arrest the high reactivity of the RS- chain end to control the synthesis of linear poly(disulfide)s, realizing a rapid, living ring-opening polymerization of 1,2-dithiolanes with narrow dispersity and high regioselectivity (Mw/Mn ∼ 1.1, Ps ∼ 0.85). Mechanistic studies support the formation of a thiourea-base-sulfide ternary complex as the catalytically active species during the chain propagation. Theoretical analyses reveal a synergistic catalytic model where the catalyst preorganizes the protonated base and anionic chain end to establish spatial confinement over the bound monomer, effecting the observed regioselectivity. The catalytic system is amenable to monomers with various functional groups, and semicrystalline polymers are also obtained from lipoic acid derivatives by enhancing the regioselectivity.

Poly(N-acryloylglycine-acrylamide) Hydrogel Mimics the Cellular Microenvironment and Promotes Neurite Growth with Protection from Oxidative Stress

In this work, the glycine-based acryloyl monomer is polymerized to obtain a neurogenic polymeric hydrogel for regenerative applications. The synthesized poly(N-acryloylglycine-acrylamide) [poly(NAG-b-A)] nanohydrogel exhibits high swelling (∼1500%) and is mechanically very stable, biocompatible, and proliferative in nature. The poly(NAG-b-A) nanohydrogel provides a stable 3D extracellular mimetic environment and promotes healthy neurite growth for primary cortical neurons by facilitating cellular adhesion, proliferation, actin filament stabilization, and neuronal differentiation. Furthermore, the protective role of the poly(NAG-b-A) hydrogel for the neurons in oxidative stress conditions is revealed and it is found that it is a clinically relevant material for neuronal regenerative applications, such as for promoting nerve regeneration via GSK3β inhibition. This hydrogel additionally plays an important role in modulating the biological microenvironment, either as an agonist and antagonist or as an antioxidant. Furthermore, it favors the physiological responses and eases the neurite growth efficiency. Additionally, we found out that the conversion of glycine-based acryloyl monomers into their corresponding polymer modulates the mechanical performance, mimics the cellular microenvironment, and accelerates the self-healing capability due to the responsive behavior towards reactive oxygen species (ROS). Thus, the p(NAG-b-A) hydrogel could be a potential candidate to induce neuronal regeneration since it provides a physical cue and significantly boosts neurite outgrowth and also maintains the microtubule integrity in neuronal cells.

A self-stabilized and water-responsive deliverable coenzyme-based polymer binary elastomer adhesive patch for treating oral ulcer

Oral ulcer can be treated with diverse biomaterials loading drugs or cytokines. However, most patients do not benefit from these materials because of poor adhesion, short-time retention in oral cavity and low drug therapeutic efficacy. Here we report a self-stabilized and water-responsive deliverable coenzyme salt polymer poly(sodium α-lipoate) (PolyLA-Na)/coenzyme polymer poly(α-lipoic acid) (PolyLA) binary synergistic elastomer adhesive patch, where hydrogen bonding cross-links between PolyLA and PolyLA-Na prevents PolyLA depolymerization and slow down the dissociation of PolyLA-Na, thus allowing water-responsive sustainable delivery of bioactive LA-based small molecules and durable adhesion to oral mucosal wound due to the adhesive action of PolyLA. In the model of mice and mini-pig oral ulcer, the adhesive patch accelerates the healing of the ulcer by regulating the damaged tissue inflammatory environment, maintaining the stability of oral microbiota, and promoting faster re-epithelialization and angiogenesis. This binary synergistic patch provided a therapeutic strategy to treat oral ulcer.

Light-Controlled Switching of Perylene Bisimide Assemblies

Light-driven changes in supramolecular interactions in perylene bisimides (PBIs) with pendant sulfur-containing functional groups at the bay position are demonstrated. In the ground state, a noncovalent S···X interaction between the σ-hole on sulfur and a heteroatom, X (X = O, N, S), of a neighboring molecule is the main driving force for intermolecular interactions, while in the excited state it is the π-π interaction between PBI scaffolds which drives assembly. The presence of heteroatoms in the solvent results in acceleration of the π-stacking process via the formation of a PBI-solvent complex. The excited-state dynamics involved in the assembly process were revealed via time-resolved fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopies, while steady-state spectroscopy was used to evaluate the structure of the supramolecular assembly.

Super Adhesive Fluorescent Materials for Encrypted Messages, Underwater Leak Repair, and Their Potential Application in Fluorescent Tattoos

Achieving high-performance luminescence for underwater bonding remains a significant challenge in materials science. This study addresses this issue by synthesizing a luminescent material based on an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) monomer and copolymerizing it with lipoic acid (LA) to create an AIE supramolecular polymer. The resulting copolymer exhibits strong fluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at 365 nm due to the AIE of TPEE and enables underwater adhesion. The P(LA-TPEE) polymer demonstrates potential for digital encryption and decryption of quick response (QR) codes underwater. Furthermore, it can dissolve well in anhydrous ethanol, producing an environment-friendly and super waterproof adhesive. Most notably, the P(LA-TPEE) solution can be sprayed on human skin, creating an invisible tattoo that only became visible under UV light due to the hydrogen bond (H-bond) and π-π structures. This smart tattoo can be quickly wiped away with alcohol, avoiding the painful and harmful process of tattoo removal. It can also be repeatedly applied to draw the preferred tattoo pattern. This AIE supramolecular polymer shows great potential in underwater adhesion and repair, underwater message encryption, and non-toxic and painless invisible tattooing. Overall, this study provides a valuable approach for material design in the future.

Reversible Crosslinking of Commodity Polymers via Photocontrolled Metal-Ligand Coordination for High-Performance and Recyclable Thermoset Plastics

Thermoset plastics, highly desired for their stability, durability, and chemical resistance, are currently consumed in over 60 million tons annually across the globe, but they are difficult to recycle due to their crosslinked structures. The development of recyclable thermoset plastics is an important but challenging task. In this work, recyclable thermoset plastics are prepared by crosslinking a commodity polymer, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), with a small percentage of a Ru complex via nitrile-Ru coordination. PAN is obtained from industry and the Ru complex is synthesized in one step, which enables the production of recyclable thermoset plastics in an efficient way. In addition, the thermoset plastics exhibit impressive mechanical performance, boasting a Young's modulus of 6.3 GPa and a tensile strength of 109.8 MPa. Moreover, they can be de-crosslinked when exposed to both light and a solvent and can then be re-crosslinked upon heating. This reversible crosslinking mechanism enables the recycling of thermosets from a mixture of plastic waste. The preparation of recyclable thermosets from other commodity polymers such as poly(styrene-coacrylonitrile) (SAN) resins and polymer composites through reversible crosslinking is also demonstrated. This study shows that reversible crosslinking via metal-ligand coordination is a new strategy for designing recyclable thermosets using commodity polymers.

Emerging Trends in the Chemistry of End-to-End Depolymerization

Over the past couple of decades, polymers that depolymerize end-to-end upon cleavage of their backbone or activation of a terminal functional group, sometimes referred to as "self-immolative" polymers, have been attracting increasing attention. They are of growing interest in the context of enhancing polymer degradability but also in polymer recycling as they allow monomers to be regenerated in a controlled manner under mild conditions. Furthermore, they are highly promising for applications as smart materials due to their ability to provide an amplified response to a specific signal, as a single sensing event is translated into the generation of many small molecules through a cascade of reactions. From a chemistry perspective, end-to-end depolymerization relies on the principles of self-immolative linkers and polymer ceiling temperature (Tc). In this article, we will introduce the key chemical concepts and foundations of the field and then provide our perspective on recent exciting developments. For example, over the past few years, new depolymerizable backbones, including polyacetals, polydisulfides, polyesters, polythioesters, and polyalkenamers, have been developed, while modern approaches to depolymerize conventional backbones such as polymethacrylates have also been introduced. Progress has also been made on the topological evolution of depolymerizable systems, including the introduction of fully depolymerizable block copolymers, hyperbranched polymers, and polymer networks. Furthermore, precision sequence-defined oligomers have been synthesized and studied for data storage and encryption. Finally, our perspectives on future opportunities and challenges in the field will be discussed.

Protein fibers with self-recoverable mechanical properties via dynamic imine chemistry

The manipulation of internal interactions at the molecular level within biological fibers is of particular importance but challenging, severely limiting their tunability in macroscopic performances and applications. It thus becomes imperative to explore new approaches to enhance biological fibers' stability and environmental tolerance and to impart them with diverse functionalities, such as mechanical recoverability and stimulus-triggered responses. Herein, we develop a dynamic imine fiber chemistry (DIFC) approach to engineer molecular interactions to fabricate strong and tough protein fibers with recoverability and actuating behaviors. The resulting DIF fibers exhibit extraordinary mechanical performances, outperforming many recombinant silks and synthetic polymer fibers. Remarkably, impaired DIF fibers caused by fatigue or strong acid treatment are quickly recovered in water directed by the DIFC strategy. Reproducible mechanical performance is thus observed. The DIF fibers also exhibit exotic mechanical stability at extreme temperatures (e.g., -196 °C and 150 °C). When triggered by humidity, the DIFC endows the protein fibers with diverse actuation behaviors, such as self-folding, self-stretching, and self-contracting. Therefore, the established DIFC represents an alternative strategy to strengthen biological fibers and may pave the way for their high-tech applications.

Exploring Lipoic Acid-Mediated Dynamic Bottlebrush Elastomers as a New Platform for the Design of High-Performance Thermally Conductive Materials

The development of high-performance thermally conductive interface materials is the key to unlocking the serious bottleneck of modern microelectronic technology through enhanced heat dispersion. Existing methods that utilize silicone composites rely either on loading large doses of randomly distributed thermal conductive fillers or on filling prealigned thermal conductive scaffolds with liquid silicone precursors. Both approaches suffer from several limitations in terms of physical traits and processability. We describe an alternative approach in which malleable silicone matrices, based on the dynamic cyclic disulfide nature cross-linker (α-lipoic acid), are readily prepared using ring-opening polymerization. The mechanical properties of the resultant dynamic silicone matrix are readily tunable. Stress-dependent depolymerization of the disulfide network demonstrates the ability to reprocess the silicone elastomer matrix, which allows for the fabrication of highly efficient thermal conductive composites with a 3D interconnecting, thermally conductive network (3D-graphite/MxBy composites) via in situ methods. Applications of the composites as thermal dispersion interface materials are demonstrated by LEDs and CPUs, suggesting great potential in advanced electronics.

Aqueous coordination polymer complexes: From colloidal assemblies to bulk materials

1-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers refer to the macromolecules that have metal ions incorporated in their pendent groups or main chain through metal-binding ligand groups. They have intrinsic advantages over traditional polymers to regulate the polymer structures and functions owing to the nature of the metal-ligand bond. Consequently, they have great potential for the development of smart and functional structures and materials and therapeutic agents. Water-soluble 1D coordination polymers and assemblies are an important subtype of coordination polymers with distinctive interests for demanding applications in aqueous systems, such as biological and medical applications. This review highlights the recent progress and research achievements in the design and use of water-soluble 1D coordination polymers and assemblies. The overview covers the design and structure control of 1D coordination polymers, their colloidal assemblies, including nanoparticles, nanofibers, micelles and vesicles, and fabricated bulk materials such as membraneless liquid condensates, security ink, hydrogel actuators, and smart fabrics. Finally, we discuss the potential applications of several of these coordination polymeric structures and materials and give an outlook on the field of aqueous coordination polymers.

Gelation of Hole Transport Layer to Improve the Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells

To achieve high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long-term stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), a hole transport layer (HTL) with persistently high conductivity, good moisture/oxygen barrier ability, and adequate passivation capability is important. To achieve enough conductivity and effective hole extraction, spiro-OMeTAD, one of the most frequently used HTL in optoelectronic devices, often needs chemical doping with a lithium compound (LiTFSI). However, the lithium salt dopant induces crystallization and has a negative impact on the performance and lifetime of the device due to its hygroscopic nature. Here, we provide an easy method for creating a gel by mixing a natural small molecule additive (thioctic acid, TA) with spiro-OMeTAD. We discover that gelation effectively improves the compactness of resultant HTL and prevents moisture and oxygen infiltration. Moreover, the gelation of HTL improves not only the conductivity of spiro-OMeTAD, but also the operational robustness of the devices in the atmospheric environment. In addition, TA passivates the perovskite defects and facilitates the charge transfer from the perovskite layer to HTL. As a consequence, the optimized PSCs based on the gelated HTL exhibit an improved PCE (22.52%) with excellent device stability.

Synthesis and Evaluation of Metal Lipoate Adhesives

The development of new bioadhesives with integrated properties remains an unmet clinical need to replace staples or sutures. Current bioadhesives do not allow electronic activation, which would allow expansion into laparoscopic and robotic surgeries. To address this deficiency, voltage-activated adhesives have been developed on both carbene- and catechol-based chemical precursors. Herein, a third platform of voltage-activated adhesive is evaluated based on lipoic acid, a non-toxic dithiolane found in aerobic metabolism and capable of ring-opening polymerization. The electro-rheological and adhesive properties of lithium, sodium, and potassium salts of lipoic acid are applied for wet tissue adhesion. At ambient conditions, potassium lipoate displays higher storage modulus than lithium or sodium salt under similar conditions. Voltage stimulation significantly improves gelation kinetics to Na- and K-lipoates, while Li-lipoate is found to not require voltage stimulation for gelation. Lap shear adhesion strength on wetted collagen substrates reveals that the synthetic metal lipoates have comparable adhesion strength to fibrin sealants without viral or ethical risks.

Enzyme-Activatable Polypeptide for Plasma Membrane Disruption and Antitumor Immunity Elicitation

Enzyme-instructed self-assembly of bioactive molecules into nanobundles inside cells is conceived to potentially disrupt plasma membrane and subcellular structure. Herein, an alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-activatable hybrid of ICG-CF₄ KY^p is facilely synthesized by conjugating photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG) with CF₄ KY^p peptide via classical Michael addition reaction. ALP-induced dephosphorylation of ICG-CF₄ KY^p enables its transformation from small-molecule precursor into rigid nanofibrils, and such fibrillation in situ causes severe mechanical disruption of cytomembrane. Besides, ICG-mediated photosensitization causes additional oxidative damage of plasma membrane by lipid peroxidation. Hollow MnO₂ nanospheres devote to deliver ICG-CF₄ KY^p into tumorous tissue through tumor-specific acidity/glutathione-triggered degradation of MnO₂ , which is monitored by fluorescent probing and magnetic resonance imaging. The burst release of damage-associated molecular patterns and other tumor antigens during therapy effectively triggers immunogenetic cell death and improves immune stimulatory, as demonstrated by the promotion of dendritic cell maturation and CD8⁺ lymphocyte infiltration, as well as constraint of regulatory T cell population. Taken together, such cytomembrane injury strategy based on peptide fibrillation in situ holds high clinical promise for lesion-specific elimination of primary, abscopal, and metastatic tumors, which may enlighten more bioinspired nanoplatforms for anticancer theranostics.

Synergistic Covalent-and-Supramolecular Polymers with an Interwoven Topology

Network topologies, especially some high-order topologies, are able to furnish cross-linked polymer materials with enhanced properties without altering their chemical composition. However, the fabrication of such topologically intriguing architectures at the macromolecular level and in-depth insights into their structure-property relationship remain a significant challenge. Herein, we relied on synergistic covalent-and-supramolecular polymers (CSPs) as a platform to prepare a range of polymer networks with an interwoven topology. Specifically, through the sequential supramolecular self-assemblies, the covalent polymers (CPs) and metallosupramolecular polymers (MSPs) could be interwoven in our CSPs by [2]pseudorotaxane cross-links. As a result, the obtained CSPs possessed a topological network that could not only promote the synergistic effect between CPs and MSPs to afford mechanically robust yet dynamic materials but also vest polymers with some functions, as manifested by force-induced hierarchical dissociations of supramolecular interactions and superior thermomechanical stability compared to our previously reported CSP systems. Furthermore, our CSPs exhibited tunable mechanical performance toward multiple stimuli including K⁺ and PPh₃, demonstrating abundant stimuli-responsive properties. We hope that these findings could provide novel opportunities toward achieving topological structures at the macromolecular level and also motivate further explorations of polymeric materials via the way of controlling their topological structures.

Mussel-Inspired, Underwater Self-Healing Ionoelastomers Based on α-Lipoic Acid for Iontronics

Weak adhesion and lack of underwater self-healability hinder advancing soft iontronics particularly in wet environments like sweaty skin and biological fluids. Mussel-inspired, liquid-free ionoelastomers are reported based on seminal thermal ring-opening polymerization of a biomass molecule of α-lipoic acid (LA), followed by sequentially incorporating dopamine methacrylamide as a chain extender, N,N'-bis(acryloyl) cystamine, and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl) imide (LiTFSI). The ionoelastomers exhibit universal adhesion to 12 substrates in both dry and wet states, superfast self-healing underwater, sensing capability for monitoring human motion, and flame retardancy. The underwater self-repairabilitiy prolongs over three months without deterioration, and sustains even when mechanical properties greatly increase. The unprecedented underwater self-mendability benefits synergistically from the maximized availability of dynamic disulfide bonds and diverse reversible noncovalent interactions endowed by carboxylic groups, catechols, and LiTFSI, along with the prevented depolymerization by LiTFSI and tunability in mechanical strength. The ionic conductivity reaches 1.4 × 10^-6 -2.7 × 10^-5 S m^-1 because of partial dissociation of LiTFSI. The design rationale offers a new route for creating a wide range of LA- and sulfur-derived supramolecular (bio)polymers with superior adhesion, healability, and other functionalities, and thus has technological implications for coatings, adhesives, binders and sealants, biomedical engineering and drug delivery, wearable and flexible electronics, and human-machine interfaces.

Pressure-Sensitive Supramolecular Adhesives Based on Lipoic Acid and Biofriendly Dynamic Cyclodextrin and Polyrotaxane Cross-Linkers

Slide-ring materials are polymer networks with mobile cross-links that exhibit impressive stress dissipation and fracture resistance owing to the pulley effect. On account of their remarkable ability to dissipate the energy of deformation, these materials have found their way into advanced materials such as abrasion-resistant coatings and elastic battery electrode binders. In this work, we explore the role of mobile cross-links on the properties of a biofriendly pressure-sensitive adhesive made using composites of cyclodextrin-based macromolecules and poly(lipoic acid). We modify cyclodextrin-based hosts and polyrotaxanes with pendant groups of lipoic acid (a commonly ingested antioxidant) to incorporate them as cross-links in poly(lipoic acid) networks obtained by simple heating in open air. By systematically varying the adhesive formulations while probing their mechanical and adhesive properties, we uncover trends in structure-property relationships that enable one to tune network properties and access biofriendly, high-tack adhesives.

The Synergy of Hydrogen Bond and Entanglement of Elastomer Captures Unprecedented Flaw Insensitivity Rate

Elastomers are regarded as one of the best candidates for the matrix material of soft electronics, yet they are susceptible to fracture due to the inevitable flaws generated during applications. Introducing microstructures, sacrificial bonds, and sliding cross-linking has been recognized as an effective way to improve the flaw insensitivity rate (R_insen ). However, these elastomers still prone to failure under tensile loads with the presence of even small flaws. Here, this work reports a polybutadiene elastomer with unprecedented R_insen via the synergy of hydrogen bond and entanglement. The resulting polybutadiene elastomer exhibits a R_insen  ≈1.075, which is much higher than those of reported elastomers. By molecular chain interaction and molecular chain conformation analysis, this work demonstrates that the synergistic effect of hydrogen bond dissociation and entanglement slip in the polybutadiene elastomers during stretching leads to the high R_insen . Using polybutadiene elastomer as matrix of thermal interface materials, this work demonstrates effective heat transfer for strain sensor and electronic devices. In addition, cytocompatibility of the elastomers is verified by cell proliferation and live/dead viability assays. The combination of outstanding biocompatible and excellent mechanical properties of the elastomers creates new opportunities for their applications in electronic skin.

Acid-catalyzed Disulfide-mediated Reversible Polymerization for Recyclable Dynamic Covalent Materials

Poly(1,2-dithiolane)s are a family of intrinsically recyclable polymers due to their dynamic covalent disulfide linkages. Despite the common use of thiolate-initiated anionic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) under basic condition, cationic ROP is still not exploited. Here we report that disulfide bond can act as a proton acceptor, being protonated by acids to form sulfonium cations, which can efficiently initiate the ROP of 1,2-dithiolanes and result in high-molecular-weight (over 1000 kDa) poly(disulfide)s. The reaction can be triggered by adding catalytic amounts of acids and non-coordinating anion salts, and completed in few minutes at room temperature. The acidic conditions allow the applicability for acidic monomers. Importantly, the reaction condition can be under open air without inert protection, enabling the nearly quantitative chemical recycling from bulk materials to original monomers.

Self-healing, self-adhesive, and stretchable conductive hydrogel for multifunctional sensor prepared by catechol modified nanocellulose stabilized poly(α-thioctic acid)

Self-healing, self-adhesive, and stretchable bio-based conductive hydrogels exhibit properties similar to those of biological tissues, making them an urgent requirement for emerging wearable devices. The primary challenge lies in devising straightforward strategies to accomplish all the aforementioned performances and achieve equilibrium among them. This study used the natural compound thioctic acid (TA) and modified cellulose to prepare conductive hydrogels with stretchability, healing, and self-adhesion through a simple one-step strategy. Metastable poly(TA) was obtained through ring-opening polymerization of lithiated TA, followed by the introduction of dopamine-grafted cellulose nanofibers (DCNF) to stabilize poly(TA) and prepare PTALi/DCNF hydrogels with the aforementioned properties. The hydrogels demonstrated remarkable conductivity, attributed to the existence of Li + ions, with a maximum conductivity of 17.36 mS/cm. The self-healing capacity of the hydrogels was achieved owing to the presence of disulfide bond in TA. The introduction of DCNF can effectively stabilize poly(TA), endow the hydrogel with self-adhesion ability, improve the mechanical properties, and further enhance the formability of hydrogels. Generally, bio-based PTALi/DCNF hydrogels with stretchability, self-healing, self-adhesion, and conductivity are obtained through a simple strategy and used as a sensor with a wide response range and high sensitivity. Hydrogels have significant potential for application in wearable electronic devices, electronic skins, and soft robots.

Deep Eutectic Solvents-based Ionogels with Ultrafast Gelation and High Adhesion in Harsh Environments

Adhesive materials have recently drawn intensive attention due to their excellent sealing ability, thereby stimulating advances in materials science and industrial usage. However, reported adhesives usually exhibit weak adhesion strength, require high pressure for strong bonding, and display severe adhesion deterioration in various harsh environments. In this work, instead of water or organic solvents, a deep eutectic solution (DES) was used as the medium for photopolymerization of zwitterionic and polarized monomers, thus generating a novel ionogel with tunable mechanical properties. Multiple hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions between DES and monomers facilitated ultrafast gelation and instant bonding without any external pressure, which was rarely reported previously. Furthermore, high adhesion in different harsh environments (e.g., water, acidic and basic buffers, and saline solutions) and onto hydrophilic (e.g., glass and tissues) and hydrophobic (e.g., polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, and polypropylene) adherends was demonstrated. Also, high stretchability of the ionogel at extreme temperatures (-80 and 80 °C) indicated its widespread applications. Furthermore, the biocompatible ionogel showed high burst pressure onto stomach and intestine tissues to prevent liquid leakage, highlighting its potential as an adhesive patch. This ionogel provides unprecedented opportunities in the fields of packaging industry, marine engineering, medical adhesives, and electronic assembly.

Surface Hydrophobization Provides Hygroscopic Supramolecular Plastics Based on Polysaccharides with Damage-Specific Healability and Room-Temperature Recyclability

Supramolecular materials with room-temperature healability and recyclability are highly desired because they can extend materials lifetimes and reduce resources consumption. Most approaches toward healing and recycling rely on the dynamically reversible supramolecular interactions, such as hydrogen, ionic and coordinate bonds, which are hygroscopic and vulnerable to water. The general water-induced plasticization facilitates the healing and reprocessing process but cause a troubling problem of random self-adhesion. To address this issue, here it is reported that by modifying the hygroscopic surfaces with hydrophobic alkyl chains of dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS), supramolecular plastic films based on commercial raw materials of sodium alginate (SA) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) display extraordinary damage-specific healability. Owing to the hydrophobic surfaces, random self-adhesion is eliminated even under humid environment. When damage occurs, the fresh surfaces with ionic groups and hydroxyl groups expose exclusively at the damaged site. Thus, damage-specific healing can be readily facilitated by water-induced plasticization. Moreover, the films display excellent room-temperature recyclability. After multiple times of reprocessing and re-modifying with DTMS, the rejuvenated films exhibit fatigueless mechanical properties. It is anticipated that this approach to damage-specific healing and room-temperature recycling based on surface hydrophobization can be applied to design various of supramolecular plastic polysaccharides materials for building sustainable societies.

Advances in the Synthesis of Chemically Recyclable Polymers

The development of modern society is closely related to polymer materials. However, the accumulation of polymer materials and their evolution in the environment causes not only serious environmental problems, but also waste of resources. Although physical processing can be used to reuse polymers, the properties of the resulting polymers are significantly degraded. Chemically recyclable polymers, a type of polymer that degrades into monomers, can be an effective solution to the degradation of polymer properties caused by physical recycling of polymers. The ideal chemical recycling of polymers, i. e., quantitative conversion of the polymer to monomers at low energy consumption and repolymerization of the formed monomers into polymers with comparable properties to the original, is an attractive research goal. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the design of recyclable polymers, enabling the regulation of the "polymerization-depolymerization" equilibrium and closed-loop recycling under mild conditions. This review will focus on the following aspects of closed-loop recycling of poly(sulfur) esters, polycarbonates, polyacetals, polyolefins, and poly(disulfide) polymer, illustrate the challenges in this area, and provide an outlook on future directions.

A Dynamic Supramolecular H-bonding Network with Orthogonally Tunable Clusteroluminescence

Enabling dynamically tunable emissive systems offers opportunities for constructing smart materials. Clusteroluminescence, as unconventional luminescence, has attracted increasing attention in both fundamental and applied sciences. Herein, we report a supramolecular poly(disulfides) network with tunable clusteroluminescence. The reticular H-bonds synergize the rigidity and mobility of dynamic networks, and endow the resulting materials with mechanical adaptivity and robustness, simultaneously enabling efficient clusteroluminescence and phosphorescence at 77 K. Orthogonally tunable luminescence are achieved in two manners, i.e., slow backbone disulfide exchange and fast side-chain metal coordination. Further exploration of the reprocessability and chemical closed-loop recycling of intrinsic dynamic networks for sustainable materials is feasible. We foresee that the synergistic strategy of dynamic chemistry offers a novel pathway and potential opportunities for smart emissive materials.

Photoswitchable and Solvent-Controlled Directional Actuators: Supramolecular Assembly and Crosslinked Polymers

Untethered small actuators have drawn tremendous interest owing to their reversibility, flexibility, and widespread applications in various fields. For polymer actuators, however, it is still challenging to achieve programmable structural changes under different stimuli caused by the intractability and single-stimulus responses of most polymer materials. Herein, multi-stimuli-responsive polymer actuators that can respond to light and solvent via structural changes are developed. The actuators are based on bilayer films of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and azobenzene chromophore (AAZO)-crosslinked poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDAC). Upon UV light irradiation, the AAZO undergoes trans-cis-trans photoisomerization, causing the bending of the bilayer films. When the UV light is off, a shape recovery toward an opposite direction occurs spontaneously. The reversible deformation can be repeated at least 20 cycles. Upon solvent vapor annealing, one of the bilayer films can be selectively swollen, causing the bending of the bilayer films with the directions controlled by the solvent vapors. The effects of different parameters, such as the weight ratios of AAZO and film thicknesses, on the bending angles and curvatures of the polymer films are also analyzed. The results demonstrate that multi-stimuli-responsive actuators with fast responses and high reproducibility can be fulfilled.

Thermal Nociception of Ionic Skin: TRPV1 Ion Channel-Inspired Heat-Activated Dynamic Ionic Liquid

The artificial reproduction of the tactile sensory function of natural skin is crucial for intelligent sensing, human-computer interaction, and medical health. Thermal nociception is an essential human tactile function to avoid noxious thermal stimuli, which depends on the specific heat-activation of the TRPV1 ion channel. Inspired by the TRPV1, a dynamic ionic liquid with heat-activation characteristics is designed and prepared, which can be activated at 45 °C, which is near the physiological noxious temperature, accompanied by a steep rise in electrical response signals. Its electrical behavior can be deemed to be the extreme version of temperature sensation similar to the natural thermal nociceptor. The heat-activation mechanism is confirmed as a feasible strategy to regulate the thermal response behavior of ions, and this reported dynamic ionic liquid has an unprecedented intrinsic temperature response sensitivity of up to 156.79%/°C. In consideration of the similarity between the heat-activated dynamic ionic liquid and the TRPV1 ion channel in terms of heat-activation characteristics, electrical output signal, and ultrathermal sensitivity, an all-liquid ionic skin with the ability of thermal nociception is further fabricated, which shows considerable potential to assist patients with tactile desensitization to avoid noxious thermal stimuli.

Insights into the spontaneous multi-scale supramolecular assembly in an ionic liquid-based extraction system

Herein, we report a four-step mechanism for the spontaneous multi-scale supramolecular assembly (MSSA) process in a two-phase system concerning an ionic liquid (IL). The complex ions, elementary building blocks (EBBs), [EBB]_n clusters and macroscopic assembly (MA) sphere are formed step by step. The porous large-sized [EBB]_n clusters in the glassy state can hardly stay in the IL phase and they transfer to the IL-water interface due to both electroneutrality and amphiphilicity. Then, the clusters undergo random collision in the interface driven by the Marangoni effect and capillary force thereafter. Finally, a single MA sphere can be formed owing to supramolecular interactions. To our knowledge, this is the first example realizing spontaneous whole-process supramolecular assembly covering microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic scales in extraction systems. The concept of multi-scale selectivity (MSS) is therefore suggested and its mechanism is revealed. The selective separation and solidification of metal ions can be realized in a MSSA-based extraction system depending on MSS. In addition, insights into the physicochemical characteristics of ILs from microscopic, mesoscopic to macroscopic scales are provided, and especially, the solvation effect of ILs on the large-sized clusters leading to the phase-splitting is examined. It is quite important that the polarization of uranyl in its complex, the growing of uranyl clusters in an IL as well as the glassy material of uranyl are investigated systematically on the basis of both experiment and theoretical calculations in this work.

Poly(thioctic acid): From Bottom-Up Self-Assembly to 3D-Fused Deposition Modeling Printing

Inspired by the bottom-up assembly in nature, an artificial self-assembly pattern is introduced into 3D-fused deposition modeling (FDM) printing to achieve additive manufacturing on the macroscopic scale. Thermally activated polymerization of thioctic acid (TA) enabled the bulk construction of poly(TA), and yielded unique time-dependent self-assembly. Freshly prepared poly(TA) can spontaneously and continuously transfer into higher-molecular-weight species and low-molecular-weight TA monomers. Poly(TA) and the newly formed TA further assembled into self-reinforcing materials via microscopic-phase separation. Bottom-up self-assembly patterns on different scales are fully realized by 3D FDM printing of poly(TA): thermally induced polymerization of TA (microscopic-scale assembly) to poly(TA) and 3D printing (macroscopic-scale assembly) of poly(TA) are simultaneously achieved in the 3D-printing process; after 3D printing, the poly(TA) modes show mechanically enhanced features over time, arising from the microscopic self-assembly of poly(TA) and TA. This study clearly demonstrates that micro- and macroscopic bottom-up self-assembly can be applied in 3D additive manufacturing.
