Abstract
This review explores advancing and refining hydrogels derived from natural gums for heavy metal ion adsorption, focusing on their efficiency, capacity, and influencing parameters. The high adsorption capacity of these hydrogels, with values reaching up to 384.6 mg/g (Pb2+) and 203.7 mg/g (Cu2+), is linked to functional moieties like -COOH and -OH, which bind to metal ions through electrostatic interactions, exchange of ions, and coordination mechanisms. Adsorption efficiency is governed by conditions such as duration of contact, temperature, and pH. Temperature studies imply that adsorption occurs through an endothermic mechanism, with positive ΔH values and negative ΔG values, validating the spontaneity and efficiency of the process. Adsorption isotherms, including Langmuir and Freundlich models, have shown promising fits, with a high correlation coefficient (r2 > 0.9). The kinetic study reveals that the adsorption follows pseudo-second-order kinetics, implying a chemisorption mechanism. The occurrence of interfering ions (e.g., Na+, Ca2+) can reduce adsorption efficiency, but their impact is minimal at lower concentrations. Overall, gum-based hydrogels provide an eco-conscious and reliable approach for metal ion removal in aqueous solutions, showing potential for large-scale environmental applications. Further studies focusing on improving adsorption capacity and scalability are recommended to enhance their practical utility in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is one of the most efficient, sustainable, cost-effective, and promising techniques for addressing world's water scarcity. Over 4.3 billion people around the world struggle to access clean, abundant, and safe drinking water. Additionally, >3.3 million people die each year due to drinking poor quality water. Meanwhile, our atmosphere contains approximately 13,000 trillion liters of water in the form of vapor. Therefore, AWH offers a viable solution to meet the demand for drinking water, even in arid or high humidity regions. AWH can be achieved through methods such as fog harvesting, dew harvesting and sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SBAWH). The main aim of this manuscript is to explore the potential of Sorption-Based Atmospheric Water Harvesting (SBAWH) as a solution to the global water scarcity crisis. The study focuses on evaluating the adsorption capacities and performance of various sorbent materials, systems, and devices used in SBAWH. Notably, materials such as silica gel, zeolite, hygroscopic salts, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are highlighted, with MOFs and their composites being recognized as some of the most efficient options for atmospheric water harvesting. This review emphasizes the critical role of AWH techniques in addressing the pressing issue of global water shortages.

Abstract
A hybrid hydrogel nanocomposite based on the polysaccharide-gum ghatti, has been made and evaluated as an adsorbent material for wastewater treatment. The nanocomposite is composed of a network of gum ghatti-graft-poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) with magnetite nanoparticles embedded within. This functional material Ggh-g-PAMPS/Fe3O4 has been characterized by FTIR, TGA, SEM, EDS, XRD, BET and VSM techniques. The presence of magnetite nanoparticles imparted superparamagnetic property to the adsorbent material enabling its easy separation after use with an external magnet. The characterization data indicated mesoporous nature of the nanocomposite adsorbent with mean pore diameter of 4.9 nm. The nanoparticles imparted high surface area to the adsorbent material the value being 4.7 m2g-1 based on nitrogen adsorption experiments. The suitability of the material as an adsorbent for removal of cationic dyes from water was checked with two cationic dyes namely, rhodamine 6G and methylene blue. The maximum adsorption capacity of the nanocomposite Ggh-g-PAMPS/Fe3O4 towards rhodamine 6G and methylene blue were observed to be 403.2 and 427.8 mg g-1 respectively from their individual solutions of concentration 500 mg L-1. The pH dependence on swelling and surface charge indicated medium of pH of 7.0 as the ideal condition for effective adsorption. Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo second order kinetic model are observed to be the most befitting models to describe adsorption. Further, the thermodynamic studies revealed the adsorption to be a spontaneous and endothermic process. The desorption study portrayed the reusability of the adsorbent material. The excellent adsorption performance and magnetic nature of the developed nanocomposite suggests its potential application as an adsorbent material in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
This study aimed to fabricate a series of biodegradable hydrogel films by gelating/physically crosslinking a blend of xanthan gum (XG) and chitosan (CS) in various combinations using a facile, green, and low cost solution casting technique. The adsorption of Cd2+, Cu2+ and Ni2+ by the XG/CS biofilm in aqueous solution was studied in batch experiments to determine how the pH of the solution, contact time, dosage of adsorbent, initial metal ion concentration and ionic strength affect its adsorption. A highly pH-dependent adsorption process was observed for three metal ions. A maximum amount of Cd2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ ions was adsorbable with 50 mg of the adsorbent at pH 6.0 for an initial metal concentration of 50 mg.L-1. An empirical pseudo-second-order model seems to fit the kinetic experimental data reasonably well. It was found that the Langmuir model correlated better with equilibrium isotherm when compared with the Freundlich model. For Cd2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ ions at 25 °C, the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was 152.33, 144.79, and 139.71 mg.g-1, respectively. Furthermore, the biofilm was capable of regenerating, allowing metal ions to adsorb and desorb for five consecutive cycles. Therefore, the developed biodegradable film offers the potential for remediation of specified metal ions.

Abstract
The broad use of propargyl amines and tetrazoles in pharmaceutical applications presents a well-established challenge. Their synthesis relies heavily on catalysis, which, in turn, has been hindered by the scarcity of stable and practical catalysts. In response to this issue, we have developed an environmentally friendly and sustainable catalyst by infusing copper hydroxide into basil seed hydrogel (Cu(OH)2-BSH), creating a 3D nanoreactor support structure. To verify the structural, physical, chemical, and morphological properties of the prepared samples, a comprehensive analysis using various techniques, including FT-IR, EDX, FE-SEM, TEM, XRD, BET, TGA, and XPS, were conducted. The results not only confirmed the presence of Cu(OH)2 but also revealed a porous structure, facilitating faster diffusion and providing a substantial number of active sites. This catalyst boasts a high surface area and can be easily recovered, making it a cost-effective, safe, and readily available option. This catalyst was applied to the synthesis of propargyl amines and tetrazoles through multi-component reactions (MCRs), achieving excellent results under mild conditions and in a remarkably short timeframe. Consequently, this work offers a straightforward and practical approach for designing and synthesizing metal hydroxides and 3D hydrogels for use in heterogeneous catalysis during organic syntheses. This can be achieved using basic and affordable starting materials at the molecular level.

Abstract
The objective of this research was to devise a functional hydrogel was synthesized using pectin (PE), acrylic acid (AA), dimethyldiallyl ammonium chloride (DC), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), designed to adsorb both cationic and anionic dyes concurrently. The low methoxy pectin formed double network hydrogel through chemical and physical crosslinking with AA and PVA respectively. DC is combined into the hydrogel system through copolymerization reaction. Analysis of hydrogel's physicochemical properties was conducted using techniques such as infrared spectroscopy, texture analysis, thermogravimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. Dyes adsorption studies showed that the LP/AA/DC/PVA-2 hydrogel, prepared at the molar ratio of AA to DC of 1:2, exhibited higher adsorption efficiency for methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR). Kinetics and isotherms studies indicated that the adsorption behavior conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. By the Langmuir isotherm fitting, the maximum adsorption capacities of MB and CR by LP/AA/DC/PVA-2 were recorded to be 222.65 mg/g and 316.46 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption mechanism is dominated by the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. Further, the adsorption and desorption experiments demonstrated that LP/AA/DC/PVA-2 hydrogel have excellent reusability.

Abstract
Gum-based hydrogels (GBHs) have been widely employed in diverse water purification processes due to their environmental properties, and high absorption capacity. More desired properties of GBHs such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, material cost, simplicity of manufacture, and wide range of uses have converted them into promising materials in water treatment processes. In this review, we explored the application of GBHs to remove pollutants from contaminated waters. Water resources are constantly being contaminated by a variety of harmful effluents such as heavy metals, dyes, and other dangerous substances. A practical way to remove chemical waste from water as a vital component is surface adsorption. Currently, hydrogels, three-dimensional polymeric networks, are quite popular for adsorption. They have more extensive uses in several industries, including biomedicine, water purification, agriculture, sanitary products, and biosensors. This review will help the researcher to understand the research gaps and drawbacks in this field, which will lead to further developments in the future.

Abstract
A porous hydrogel nanocomposite has been made by grafting poly(itaconic acid) on the polysaccharide, gum ghatti and by embedding magnetite nanoparticles in the copolymer gel matrix. This novel functional material Ggh-g-PIA/Fe3O4 was characterized by FTIR, TGA, SEM, EDS, XRD, BET, Zeta potential measurements and VSM techniques. The nanocomposite possesses mesoporous structure with high surface area and exhibits super-paramagnetic behavior due to the presence of magnetite nanoparticles. The hydrogel nanocomposite was evaluated as an adsorbent material for removal of dyes and divalent metal ions. Significant adsorption capacities of 410.2, 387.6, 416.5 and 401.4 mg g-1 towards methylene blue, rhodamine 6G, Cu (II) and Hg (II) ions respectively were observed. The adsorption isotherms were well described by the Freundlich isotherm model and kinetic studies demonstrated the adsorption to be a pseudo second order kinetic process. Intraparticle diffusion model suggested adsorption to occur by a multi-step diffusion process. Thermodynamic studies indicated a spontaneous and endothermic adsorption. Further, the desorption study indicated the possibility of successful regeneration of the adsorbent. A high removal efficiency, recyclability, convenient recovery after use due to the magnetic nature makes this polysaccharide based nanocomposite an environment friendly adsorbent material for water purification.

Abstract
Semiconductor materials have shown a good photocatalytic behaviour for the photodegradation of organic pollutants. In this work, maleated liquid natural rubber (MLNR) based hydrogel supported bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) as photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by crosslinking with acrylic acid (AAc) assisted by the ultrasonication method to study the efficiency for the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye in wastewater. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the parameters for adsorption of the methylene blue (MB) dye compound, whereby the effects of the initial concentration of MB and the adsorption time were examined to obtain a quadratic model for the respective hydrogel composite. The prepared composite sample was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. Remarkable improvement for removal of methylene blue (99% removal) was found within 3 h adsorption time with a MLNR/AAc-BiFeO3 hydrogel composite as compared to the pristine hydrogel. A synergistic mode of dye removal by adsorption and photodegradation is proposed. Based on the isotherm and kinetic study conducted, it was found that Freundlich isotherm model and a pseudo second-order kinetic model was best fitted for adsorption of MB dye. The MLNR/AAc-BiFeO3 composite maintains its removal efficiency after 5 cycles without the necessity of post-treatment separation. Therefore, it is crucial to note that the resultant low-cost MLNR/AAc-BiFeO3 hydrogel composite in this study offers excellent potential for water and wastewater treatment applications with improved recyclability and recovery.

Abstract
The unique and outstanding physical and chemical properties of aluminosilicate minerals, including zeolites, make them extremely useful in remediation processes. That is due to their demonstrated high efficiency, inexpensiveness, and environmental friendliness in processes aimed on the elimination of heavy metals from water. The paper reports the results of the examination of selectivity of the tested clay minerals and zeolites toward different heavy metals in light of the postulated sorption mechanisms. It was stated that while the most efficient at concurrent removal of lead and copper from aqueous solutions were synthetic zeolites 3A and 10A, smectite was the best in dealing with prolonged pollution with Pb2+ and Cu2+. Determined as one of the parameters in DKR isotherm energy of the process for each combination of sorbate and sorbent, it showed that the dominant mechanism of adsorption on the tested mineral sorbents was physisorption. The exception was kaolinite, for which that energy implied ion exchange as the dominant mechanism of the process.

Abstract
Separating and recovering lead from heavy metal contaminated wastewater is crucial for the environment remediation and reutilization of lead resources. Herein, a novel adsorbent, the phosphorylated chitosan-coated magnetic silica nanoparticles (Fe3O4@SiO2@CS-P), was successfully fabricated and applied to highly selective adsorption of lead. Competitive experiments were conducted in a multi-ion solution (7 metal ions coexist) at pH 6.0, Fe3O4@SiO2@CS-P exhibited an excellent selectively for capturing lead with the distribution coefficient (0.75 L g-1) more ten times than other metal, while Fe3O4@SiO2@CS demonstrated a highly selective adsorption of silver. These implied that phosphorylation of adsorbent not only improves the sorption performance of lead, but also changes the selective adsorption of metal types. Acidity experiments can draw conclusions that Fe3O4@SiO2@CS-P exhibited better acid resistance (with barely any iron leaching) than silica-uncoated adsorbent (Fe3O4@CS-P) at pH 1.0. Furthermore, the FTIR and XPS spectra after adsorption suggested that the high adsorption performance and selective capture lead were predominantly controlled by the coordination of the phosphate groups on the surface of the adsorbent. This work shows a broad prospect of developing a series of novel, acid-resistant, good reusable and rapidly separable magnetic materials that can be used to efficiently and selectively capture lead from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Soil washing is an efficient, rapid, and cost-effective remediation technique to dissolve target pollutants from contaminated soil. Here we studied the effects of leaching agents: hydrochloric acid (HCl), ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium salt (Na2EDTA) and citric acid (CA), and reductants: hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH2OH·HCl) and l-ascorbic acid (VC) on the leaching of Pb from synthetic iron oxide; the changes in mineralogy, morphology, and occurrence of Pb were shown by XRD, SEM, and sequential extraction analyses. Although the washing efficiency of Pb follows the trend HCl (44.24%) > Na2EDTA (39.04%) > CA (28.85%), the cooperation of the leaching agent with reductant further improves the efficiency. VC is more suitable as a reductant considering the higher washing efficiency by HCl-VC (98.6%) than HCl-NH2OH·HCl (88.8%). Moreover, increasing the temperature can promote the decomposition and dehydrogenation reaction of VC with more H+. Among the mixture agents, Na2EDTA + VC is the most effective agent to remediate the two kinds of contaminated soils owing to the formation of Fe(ii)-EDTA, a powerful reducing agent so that the efficiencies can reach up to 98.03% and 92.81%, respectively. As a result, these mixture agents have a great prospect to remediate Pb-contaminated soils.

Abstract
In this work, a porous hydrogel-based adsorbent for metal ions was prepared through the copolymerization of acrylic acid and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate using a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) method. Stretched molecular chains in the hydrogel ensure the excellent accessibility of functional sites by the metal ions. A highly open cellular structure endows the P(AANa-co-HEMA) gel with high transport rates as a promising adsorbent. Adsorption properties were investigated by three isotherm models and two kinetic models. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis proved a chelating interaction between -COO- and metal ions. The adsorption capacity reached 630 mg·g-1 for Pb2+ under 303 K and a 400 μg·mL-1 initial concentration. The results show that the as-prepared PolyHIPE-based P(AANa-co-HEMA) gel possesses an open cellular structure, high adsorption capacity, and high selectivity for Pb2+.

Abstract
This work reports the synthesis of nanosilica-coated magnetic carbonaceous adsorbents (MCA@SiO2) using low-temperature hydrothermal carbonization technique (HCT) and the feasibility to utilize it for methylene blue (MB) adsorption. Initially, a carbon precursor (CP) was synthesized from corn starch under saline conditions at 453 K via HCT followed by the magnetization of CP again via HCT at 453 K. Subsequently, MCA was coated with silica nanoparticles. MCA and MCA@SiO2 were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. The BET surface area of MCA and MCA@SiO2 were found to be 118 and 276 m2 g-1, respectively. Adsorption of MB onto MCA@SiO2 was performed using batch adsorption studies and in the optimum condition, MCA@SiO2 showed 99% adsorption efficiency with 0.5 g L-1 of MCA@SiO2 at pH 7. Adsorption isotherm studies predicted that MB adsorption onto MCA@SiO2 was homogeneous monolayer adsorption, which was best described using a Langmuir model with the maximum adsorption capacity of 516.9 mg g-1 at 25 °C. During adsorption kinetics, a rapid dye removal was observed which followed pseudo-first- as well as pseudo-second-order models, which suggested that MB dye molecules were adsorbed onto MCA@SiO2 via both ion exchange as well as the chemisorption process. The endothermic and spontaneous nature of the adsorption of MB onto MCA@SiO2 was established by thermodynamics studies. Mechanism of dye diffusion was collectively governed by intraparticle diffusion and film diffusion processes. Furthermore, MB was also selectively adsorbed from its mixture with an anionic dye, that is, methyl orange. Column adsorption studies showed that approximately 500 mL of MB having 50 mg L-1 concentration can be treated with 0.5 g L-1 of MCA@SiO2. Furthermore, MCA@SiO2 was repeatedly used for 20 cycles of adsorption-desorption of MB. Therefore, MCA@SiO2 can be effectively utilized in cationic dye-contaminated wastewater remediation applications.

Abstract
trans-Cinnamic acid was synthesized under microwave irradiation, and it was used for the removal of copper, a toxic metal found in industrial wastewater, from synthetic polluted aqueous solutions. Copper removal is more favorable at pH 5 and was enhanced by increasing the copper initial concentration, reaching a maximum uptake capacity of 389.5 mg/g, which is higher than those reported in the literature. Temperature exhibited a negligible effect on the removal of copper by trans-cinnamic acid. The isotherm equilibrium uptake data were found to be described by the Langmuir model. In addition, the study of the removal kinetics shows that the uptake of copper by trans-cinnamic acid follows pseudo-first order kinetics, and equilibrium is attained at approximately 30 min. Based on the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy studies, a copper-cinnamic acid complex [Cu(CA)2] is formed during the removal process. The reusability of this coordination compound was investigated using HCl, HNO3, and NaOH 0.1 M as desorption eluents; HCl was capable of completely desorbing copper from [Cu(CA)2], and trans-cinnamic acid was recovered as the trans-isomer. Alternatively, the [Cu(CA)2] was used to remove octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane from gaseous streams for biogas purification, obtaining an adsorption capacity of 3.37 mg/g. These promising results demonstrate the feasibility of copper removal by trans-cinnamic acid because of its high uptake capacity and potential reusability.

Abstract
A novel hydrophobic and cationic cyclodextrin-based acrylamide flocculant (AM-β-CD-DMDAAC) was prepared by chemical oxidative polymerization to adsorb water-soluble dyes in dye wastewater. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and thermogravimetric (TG) measurements results demonstrated that the AM-β-CD-DMDAAC was successfully synthesized. The effects of pH, contact time, initial dye concentration, temperature and adsorbent dose on dye removal efficiency for AM-β-CD-DMDAAC flocculants were investigated. The kinetic data were found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model, with the maximum adsorption capacity of 147.1 mg g-1. The adsorbent retained about 60% of the adsorption efficiency after three adsorption/desorption cycles, which implied a promising application as the dye adsorbent.

Abstract
Uranium and thorium ions were selectively removed from aqueous solution using synthesized gum ghatti grafted poly(acrylamide) gum-g-poly(AAm) composite. A gamma radiation induced free radical copolymerization technique was used to synthesize the copolymer composite of gum-g-poly(AAm). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to characterize the graft copolymer gum-g-poly(AAm). The adsorption of uranium ions and thorium ions using the gum-g-poly(AAm) copolymer composites has been investigated in batch mode. The adsorptive characteristics were investigated by varying the pH, concentration and time for both ions. The adsorption method depends on the pH of each metal ion, and the highest adsorption percentage was achieved at pH 6.0. The adsorption statistics were justified by isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic models. The Langmuir adsorption model was revealed to be the best fitted monolayer arrangement, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 367.65 mg g-1 for the uranium ions and 125.95 mg g-1 for the thorium ions. The adsorption of metal ions occurred by the ion exchange process, which was specified through the rate controlling step with a best-fitted pseudo-second order kinetic rate model. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the ΔH and ΔS values for the uranium ions and thorium ions were positive. The negative ΔG values decreased with an increase in temperature, suggesting that the metal ion adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous in behaviour.

Abstract
In this study, Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8)-loaded UiO-66-NH2 was synthesized, characterized, and analyzed for its potential to efficiently remove dyes. The selective adsorption on ZIF-8-loaded UiO-66-NH2 or its parent MOFs (UiO-66-NH2 and ZIF-8) in the mixed dyes solution was explored, including anionic dye (methyl orange (MO)) and cationic dyes (methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB)). ZIF-8-loaded UiO-66-NH2 displayed much better selectivity to MB than its parent MOFs. Adsorption capacity of ZIF-8-loaded UiO-66-NH2 (173 mg/g) toward MB was found to be 215% higher than UiO-66-NH2 (55 mg/g). A kinetics study based on adsorption data demonstrated that the adsorption process most closely matched with the model of pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption was an exothermic and spontaneous physical process as revealed by the values of thermodynamic parameters. Furthermore, reusability of ZIF-8-loaded UiO-66-NH2 was investigated and revealed the significant regeneration efficiency in adsorption capacity for MB even after four adsorption cycles. Experimental results proved that the interaction between ZIF-8-loaded UiO-66-NH2 and MB was mainly affected by the mechanism, for instance, electrostatic interaction as well as π–π stacking interactions.

Abstract
Heavy metal ion contamination, in particular that associated with Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+, poses a considerable threat to aquatic environments and human health. To obtain a highly efficient adsorbent, in this work, a facile hydrothermal method was applied to prepare acrylic acid grafted onto cellulose nanocrystal (AA-g-CNC) hydro/aerogel as an adsorbent for Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+ removal. The obtained AA-g-CNC hydrogels withstood up to 0.821 MPa of compression and showed good reciprocating performance when the deformation reached 40%. The as-formed AA-g-CNC aerogels had highly porous honeycomb structure, with many functional groups and a high zeta potential, all of which are essential features for an effective adsorbent. The maximum Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+ removal capacities of AA-g-CNC aerogels reached 1026, 898.8, and 872.4 mg/g respectively. Their adsorption followed the Freundlich isotherm model and fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The adsorption mechanism mainly attributed to electrostatic chelation between metal ions with sulfonate and carboxylate groups.

Abstract
AbstractA series of chitosan and Laponite based nano-composite adsorbents, which showed an excellent performance for fast and efficient removal of Cd(II), methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR) from aqueous solution, were prepared. In the adsorbent, with the increase of Laponite component, the surface area increased from 44.69 m2 g-1 to 64.58 m2 g-1. As a result, the adsorption rates were enhanced by increasing Laponite component. The adsorption capacities for Cd(II) and MB increased with increasing Laponite component due the cationic characteristic of two pollutants, and the opposite result was found for the removal of CR. The impacts of some factors, e.g. solution pH, temperature, pollutant concentration and salt, on the adsorption capacity were investigated. Additionally, this adsorbent could be effectively regenerated by dilute HCl solution after the adsorption of Cd(II), and the mixture of methanol and acetic acid was a suitable eluent after the adsorption of two dyes.

Abstract
The prospective uses of tree gum polysaccharides and their nanostructures in various aspects of food, water, energy, biotechnology, environment and medicine industries, have garnered a great deal of attention recently. In addition to extensive applications of tree gums in food, there are substantial non-food applications of these commercial gums, which have gained widespread attention due to their availability, structural diversity and remarkable properties as 'green' bio-based renewable materials. Tree gums are obtainable as natural polysaccharides from various tree genera possessing exceptional properties, including their renewable, biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic nature and their ability to undergo easy chemical modifications. This review focuses on non-food applications of several important commercially available gums (arabic, karaya, tragacanth, ghatti and kondagogu) for the greener synthesis and stabilization of metal/metal oxide NPs, production of electrospun fibers, environmental bioremediation, bio-catalysis, biosensors, coordination complexes of metal-hydrogels, and for antimicrobial and biomedical applications. Furthermore, polysaccharides acquired from botanical, seaweed, animal, and microbial origins are briefly compared with the characteristics of tree gum exudates.

Abstract
During the last decade, hydrogels have been used as potential adsorbents for removal of contaminants from aqueous solution. To improve the adsorption efficiency, there are numerous different particles that can be chosen to encapsulate into hydrogels and each particle has their respective advantages. Depending on the type of pollutants and approaching method, the particles will be used to prepare hydrogels. The hydrogels commonly applied in water/wastewater treatment was mainly classified into three classes according to their shape included hydrogel beads, hydrogel films, and hydrogel nanocomposites. In review of many recently research papers, we take a closer look at hydrogels and their applications for removal of contaminants, such as heavy metal ion, dyes, and radionuclides from water/wastewater in order to elucidate the reactions between contaminants and particles and potential for recycling and regeneration of the post-treatment hydrogels. Abstract
The rapid industrialization and modern agriculture, increasing emission of heavy metals, and abusing application of pesticide have changed biochemical features of the soil system and water system. Additionally, heavy metals and pesticide compounds may occur together in environments, giving rise to more serious damage to the environment because of their combined toxicity and carcinogenic properties. Therefore, there is a growing need for the development of low-cost adsorbents for their removal. Porous carbon materials have been considered as highly effective materials for pollutant ion control. In this thesis, a novel porous "carbon sponge" is produced using sucrose (S-PCS) with gas-producing molten salt KHCO3 as the activator at different pyrolysis temperatures under a limited-oxygen condition. Results from these characterizations have indicated that the as-prepared carbon sponges share high surface area (up to 457.6434 m2 g-1) and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups existed on the surface. The essential factors of contact time, initial concentrations, and cyclic availability on adsorption of lead ions and atrazine onto the as-prepared porous samples are also discussed. The typical kinetic and thermodynamic models are carried out to interpret the adsorption behaviors of lead ions and atrazine. The interactive effects and mechanism of lead ions and atrazine adsorption onto S-PCS samples are examined by simultaneous adsorption and preloading adsorption procedures. Combined with the economic and environmental merits of the raw materials, the porous carbon sponges of sucrose by KHCO3 activated are promising materials for potential practical applications. Abstract
In the present work, a novel magnetic chitosan/graphene oxide nanocomposite (MCGON) was synthesized for the removal of Cu2+ from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent was composed of graphene oxide (GO) modified by ethylenediamine (ED), Fe3O4 nanoparticles and chitosan-g-poly(acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) copolymer. The composition and structure of adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, SEM, EDX, XRD, TGA, VSM and BET analysis. The magnetic MCGON with a high specific surface area of (132.9m2g-1), large pore volume (4.03cm3g-1), small particle size (15nm) and strong saturation magnetization (3.82emug-1) was used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of Cu2+ ions from wastewater. The results showed that the adsorption of Cu2+ onto MCGON exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 217.4mgg-1. Kinetics, thermodynamics and equilibrium isotherm of the removal of copper (II) ions were carefully investigated. Adsorption of Cu2+ onto nanocomposite followed pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models. Thermodynamic parameters exhibited that the sorption process was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic in nature. These results provide evidences for the efficient removal of heavy metals from industrial wastewater.
