Abstract
Synthesizing Janus particles (JPs) with well-defined separated lobes and customizable surface chemistries has broad scientific and engineering application prospects but has proven extremely challenging. Here, we report a novel phase-separation-based fabrication method leveraging charge-dominated seeded emulsion polymerization, which enables the synthesis of JPs with multi-scale lobe architectures (ranging from isotropic asymmetric shapes to chemically anisotropic forms such as ellipses, dumbbells, and triblock structures) and customizable surface chemistries (including functional groups like carboxyl, sulfate, and sulfonate). Our method is based on the principles of multicomponent systems' heterogeneous nucleation and growth, where the interfacial energy is meticulously controlled by fine-tuning the surface charges/chemical properties of polystyrene (PS) seeds and methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPS) emulsions, while the growth kinetics of polymethacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (PMPS) lobes are guided through a synergistic combination of radical polymerization and hydrolysis-condensation reactions. Charge-dominated repulsive forces at the interface play a crucial role in driving the phase separation, enabling the synthesis of well-defined JPs and making this strategy broadly applicable to a variety of negatively charged PS seeds or MPS emulsions for customizable two-lobe surface chemistries. Furthermore, the PMPS hemisphere can be selectively modified, enabling applications in Pickering emulsions. This work offers a scalable method for the controllable fabrication of JPs with programmable architectures and surface chemistries.

Abstract
The inherent antibacterial properties of micro/nanoparticles hold promise for addressing the growing challenge of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Thus, developing new types of micro/nanoparticles is of great significance. Herein, we present a novel class of bigel particles, which are composed of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate as the liquid dispersion medium, poly-methyl methacrylate as the polymer network of the seed gel, and poly-γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane as the introduced secondary network. We demonstrate that the nanotopography of these bigels can be easily regulated by adjusting the pH, resulting in particles with the same composition but varying shapes and surface nanotopographies. Antibacterial testing reveals that the inherent antibacterial property of the bigel particles can be significantly enhanced by controlling their nanotopographies while showing no toxicity to mammalian cells. This work expands the range of materials available for antimicrobial micro/nanoparticles, introduces a method for controlling the nanotopography of ionic liquid gel particles, and demonstrates that the nanotopography of flexible organic micro/nanoparticles can influence their intrinsic antibacterial properties.

Abstract
Since the development of emulsion polymerization techniques, polymer particles have become the epitome of standard colloids due to the exceptional control over size, size distribution, and composition the synthesis methods allow reaching. The exploration of different variations of the synthesis methods has led to the discovery of more advanced techniques, enabling control over their composition and shape. Many early investigations focused on forming particles with protrusions (with one protrusion, called dumbbell particles) and particles with concavities, also called dimpled particles. This paper reviews the literature covering the synthesis, functionalization, and applications of both types of particles. The focus has been on the rationalization of the various approaches used to prepare such particles and on the discussion of the mechanisms of formation not just from the experimental viewpoint but also from the standpoint of thermodynamics. The primary motivation to combine in a single review the preparation of both types of particles has been the observation of similarities among some of the methods developed to prepare dimpled particles, which sometimes include the formation of particles with protrusions and vice versa. The most common applications of these particles have been discussed as well. By looking at the different approaches developed in the literature under one general perspective, we hope to stimulate a more ample use of these particles and promote the development of even more effective synthetic protocols.

Abstract
Alcohols are discovered for the first time to tune the morphology of poly(vinyl benzyl chloride)-poly(3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) (PVBC-PMPS) composite particles through seeded emulsion polymerization within the alcohol/water mixture. Here, monodispersed linear PVBC particles was synthesized through the dispersion polymerization and employed as the seeds. The as-obtained PVBC-PMPS composite particles could be dramatically tuned from core-shell structures to snowman-like particles, to dumbbell-shaped particles, to inverse snowman-like particles when the ethanol content in reaction mixtures is only adjusted within a narrow range. The morphology of fresh PMPS bulges was observed after removing the linear PVBC seeds with N,N'-dimethyl formamide, and their formation mechanism was studied by monitoring the free radical polymerization and sol-gel process of 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane. It has been confirmed that the sol-gel kinetics were the main factor on the particles' morphology. In addition, morphologies of PVBC-PMPS particles were also varied by the MPS feeding amount, types of the co-solvent and pH values of alcohol/water mixtures.

Abstract
Anisotropic particles have attracted significant attention due to their alluring features that distinguish them from isotropic particles. One of the most appealing strategies for the synthesis of anisotropic particles is the emulsion-guided method. However, morphological control and the understanding of formation mechanisms have remained a major challenge. Based on a novel mechanism, here, a facile one-pot emulsion-templating method for the tunable construction of anisotropic polymeric particles (APPs) with different defined structures is reported. Three types of monocomponent APPs with new morphologies and sizes in the range of 240-650 nm, including Janus mushroom-like mesoporous poly(m-phenylenediamine) (PmPD) particles, wheel-shaped particles, and acorn-like PmPD particles, are obtained by controlling the average size of the oil droplets in the emulsion. Furthermore, the APPs demonstrate the ability for conversion to nitrogen-doped anisotropic carbon particles (ACPs) by pyrolysis at 800 °C under a N2 atmosphere, thereby inheriting their structures. These novel ACPs show appreciable potential as metal-free electrocatalysts for use in oxygen reduction reactions. Compared to their isotropic counterpart, these ACPs exhibit remarkable advantages such as enhanced specific surface area and pore volume, reduced stacking density, and easy fabrication of continuous and uniform membrane electrodes.

Abstract
![]()
A facile
one-step approach for the synthesis of physically and
chemically anisotropic polymer particles with tunable size, shape,
composition, wettability, and functionality is reported. Specifically,
dynamically reconfigurable oil-in-water Janus emulsions containing
photocurable hydrocarbon or fluorocarbon acrylate monomers as one
of the droplet phases are used as structural templates to polymerize
them into precision Janus particles with highly uniform anomalous
morphologies including (hemi-) spheres, lenses, and bowls. During
polymerization, each interface is exposed to a different chemical
environment, yielding particles with an intrinsic Janus character
that can be amplified via side-selective postfunctionalization. The
fabrication method allows to start with various common emulsification
techniques, thus generating particles in the range of 200 nm –150
μm, also at a technical scale. The anisotropic shape combined
with the asymmetric wettability profile of the produced particles
promotes their directed self-assembly into colloidal clusters as well
as their directional alignment at fluid interfaces. We foresee the
application of such Janus particles in technical emulsions or oil
recovery, for the manufacturing of programmed self-assembled architectures,
and for the engineering of microstructured interfaces.

Abstract
Nonspherical polymer particles (NPPs) are nano/micro-particulates of macromolecules that are anisotropic in shape, and can be designed anisotropic in chemistry. Due to shape and surface anisotropies, NPPs bear many unique structures and fascinating properties which are distinctly different from those of spherical polymer particles (SPPs). In recent years, the research on NPPs has surprisingly blossomed in recent years, and many practical materials based on NPPs with potential applications in photonic device, material science and biomedical engineering have been generated. In this review, we give a systematic, balanced and comprehensive summary of the main aspects of NPPs related to their preparation and application, and propose perspectives for the future developments of NPPs.

Abstract
Janus colloids are functional particles consisting of two surfaces (or internal materials) with distinct physical or chemical properties in the same particle. Owing to their amphiphilic nature, Janus colloids composed of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic faces provide a powerful tool to generate functional surfaces and to manipulate the properties of interfaces. Amphiphilic Janus colloids have shown promising applications as particulate surfactants in oil/water separation, as interfacial compatibilizers in polymer blends, and as assembly blocks in robust coatings with unique wettability. In this Feature Article, we summarize recent advances in engineering interfaces by using Janus colloids.

Abstract
Nonspherical colloidal particles with various geometries and different compositions have attracted tremendous attention and been widely researched. The preparation of polymer colloidal particles with controlled shapes by seeded polymerization is recognized as the most promising technique owing to the precise control of various morphologies and using non-cross-linked seed particles are of particular interest. Seeds particles derived from natural biopolymers are seldom applied. Hence, non-cross-linked starch-based seed could be used to fabricate the anisotropic particles by soap-free seed polymerization. Non-cross-linked starch-based seed particles were prepared by a nanoprecipitation method. Starch/polystyrene composite colloidal particles with shape-tunable were fabricated by soap-free seeded polymerization using starch-based seed. The effect of the polymerization time, monomer feed ratio and seed type were investigated. The seed particles with a single- or multi-hole structure were obtained after swelling with styrene. The resulting particles including golf-like, raspberry-like, octahedron-like and snowman-like structures, was fabricated on the polymerization process. This study firstly reports that the morphology of composite particles from golf-like to snowman-like at high monomer feed ratio using starch-based seed. At low monomer feed ratio, raspberry-like particles were obtained by surface nucleation increasing process. In addition, seed type also effect the morphology of composite particles.

Abstract
The ability to finely tune the amphiphilic balance of Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) could represent a step forward toward creating the next generation of solid-state amphiphiles with significant potential for applications. The inherent amphiphilicity of JNPs stemming from an intrinsic polarity contrast between two surface regions is well-acknowledged, but remained difficult to demonstrate experimentally in the absence of surfactants and stabilizers. We have designed two homologous series of surfactant-free polymeric JNPs starting from polystyrene (PS) seed nanoparticles (NPs) on which we grew Janus lobes of different sizes via seed polymerization and phase separation of the 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl-methacrylate (3-TSPM) monomer. The two series differ only by the radical initiator used in the seed polymerization: polar ionic ammonium persulfate (APS) vs nonpolar oil-soluble 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionitrile) (AIBN). To compare the two series, we employed them in the emulsification of water with heptane or molten paraffin wax. A polarity reversal of the JNPs within AIBN-JNP series could be observed from the catastrophic and transitional emulsion phase inversions and occurred when the more polar lobe was larger than the nonpolar seed PS lobe. Furthermore, the AIBN-JNPs appeared to be amphiphilic and adopt preferred orientation within the monolayer at the oil/water interface. We therefore demonstrated that in the absence of surfactants the amphiphilicity of the JNPs depends not only on the relative size of the lobes, but also on the surface polarity contrast, which can be tuned by changing the nature of radical initiator.

Abstract
Synthesis of hybrid colloidal particles with complex and hierarchical structures is attracting much interest theoretically and technically in recent years, but still remains a tremendous challenge. Here, we present a mild and controllable wet-chemical method for the synthesis of silver nanocube (Ag NC)-organosilica hybrid particles with finely tuned numbers (with one, two, three, four, five, or six) and sizes of organosilica petals, by simply controlling the affinity with Ag NC/nature, amount, and prehydrolysis process of alkoxysilanes. The morphologies of hybrid colloidal particles have an obvious influence on the surface wettability of the hybrid particle-based films. More and larger organosilica petals can increase the surface hydrophobicity of the hybrid particle-based films.

Abstract
Previously, synthesis of anisotropic particles by seeded polymerizations has involved multiple process steps. In conventional one-pot dispersion polymerization (Dis.P) with a cross-linker added, only spherical particles are produced due to rapid and high cross-linking. In this Article, a straightforward one-pot preparation of monodisperse anisotropic particles with tunable morphology, dimensions, surface roughness, and asymmetrically distributed functional groups is described. With a cross-linker of divinylbenzene (DVB, 8%), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA, 6%), or dimethacryloyloxybenzophenone (DMABP, 5%) added at 40 min, shortly after the end of nucleation stage in Dis.P of styrene (St) in methanol and water (6/4, vol), the swollen growing particles are inhomogeneously cross-linked at first. Then, at low gel contents of 59%, 49%, and 69%, corresponding to the cases using DVB, EGDMA, and DMABP, respectively, the growing particle phase separates and snowman- or dumbbell-like particles are generated. Thermodynamic and kinetic analyses reveal that moderate cross-linking and sufficient swelling of growing particles determine the formation and growth of anisotropic particles during polymerization. Morphology, surface roughness, sizes, and cross-linking degrees of each domain of final particles are tuned continuously by varying start addition time and contents of cross-linkers. The snowman-like particles fabricated with DVB have a gradient cross-linking and asymmetrical distribution of pendant vinyl groups from their body to head. The dumbbell-like particles prepared using DMABP have only one domain cross-linked; i.e., only one domain contains photosensitive benzophenone (BP) groups. With addition of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) or propargyl methacrylate (PMA) together with DVB or EGDMA, epoxy or alkynyl groups are asymmetrically incorporated. With the aid of these functional groups, carboxyl, amino, or thiol groups and PEG (200) are attached by thiol-ene (yne) click and photocoupling reactions.

Abstract
In this highlight, we discuss the self-assembly of block copolymer (BCP) nanoparticles. We first review the state-of-art of hierarchical structural features of BCP nanoparticles due to 3D geometric confinement, both theory and experiments. Simultaneously, we highlight the applications based on these structural features: the generation of multifunctional hybrid nanoparticles, the fabrication of mesoporous BCP nanoparticles, and applications of using BCP nanoparticles as nanocontainers or nanocargos. Finally, we discuss the challenge in the fabrication and potential applications of nanostructured BCP nanoparticles.

Abstract
Janus composites with two different components divided on the same object have gained growing interest in many fields, such as solid emulsion stabilizers, sensors, optical probes and self-propellers. Over the past twenty years, various synthesis methods have been developed including Pickering emulsion interfacial modification, block copolymer self-assembly, microfluidics, electro co-jetting, and swelling emulsion polymerization. Anisotropic shape and asymmetric spatial distribution of compositions and functionalities determine their unique performances. Rational design and large scale synthesis of functional Janus materials are crucial for the systematical characterization of performance and exploitation of practical applications.

Abstract
We compute the structure and kinetics of two systems of low-valence particles with three or six freely oriented bonds in two dimensions. The structure of clusters formed by trivalent particles is complex with loops and holes, while hexavalent particles self-organize into regular and compact structures. We identify the elementary structures which compose the clusters of trivalent particles. At initial stages of clustering, the clusters of trivalent particles grow with a power-law time dependence. Yet at longer times fusion and fission of clusters equilibrates and clusters form a heterogeneous phase with polydispersed sizes. These results emphasize the role of valence in the kinetics and stability of finite-size clusters.

Abstract
Janus and patchy particles have designed heterogeneous surfaces that consist of two or several patches with different materials properties. These particles are emerging as building blocks for a new class of soft matter and functional materials. Here we introduce a route for forming heterogeneous capsules by producing highly ordered jammed colloidal shells of various shapes with domains of controlled size and composition. These structures combine the functionalities offered by Janus or patchy particles, and those given by permeable shells such as colloidosomes. The simple assembly route involves the synergetic action of electro-hydrodynamic flow and electro-coalescence. We demonstrate that the method is robust and straightforwardly extendable to production of multi-patchy capsules. This forms a starting point for producing patchy colloidosomes with domains of anisotropic chemical surface properties, permeability or mixed liquid-solid phase domains, which could be exploited to produce functional emulsions, light and hollow supra-colloidosome structures, or scaffolds.

Abstract
A family of anisotropic particles is synthesized via a facile, scalable, and versatile method based on a conventional double emulsion, which is very well suited for practical production and applications. Partial wetting theory is well established as a powerful instrument to elucidate the controlled phase separation within the double emulsion. This theory is employed to assist the manipulation of the phase separation process for the formation of well-defined nonspherical particles as well as their triggered release.

Abstract
A novel robust hybrid raspberry-like TiO2/PS hollow particles with complex double-shelled structures have been fabricated in large quantities by a facile swelling polymerization approach based on commercially available hollow polystyrene (PS) spheres. The crosslinked-PS protrusions are wedged firmly into the TiO2 shell, making the resultant particles both chemically and mechanically robust. By simply tuning the monomer concentration, the hierarchical morphology (the size and number of protrusion) of the surfaces can be well-controlled. Due to the dual-sized hierarchical morphology, the particulate coating possesses superhydrophobicity (water contact angle ≈ 161°). Moreover, the well-compartmentalized character is similar to that of typical Janus particles. The special particles with interfacial activity can stabilize water-in-toluene (w/o) emulsions well. Meanwhile, a TiO2 double-shelled hollow sphere with a complex structure is achieved by calcination or solvent treatment. All these unique features derived from a readily available method will endow the products with a broader range of applications.
