Abstract
The death of someone close to a child often has a profound and lifelong effect on the child and results in a range of both short- and long-term reactions. Pediatricians, within a patient-centered medical home, are in an excellent position to provide guidance to caregivers and to offer assistance and support to grieving children of all ages and their families. This clinical report offers practical suggestions on how to talk with grieving children to help them better understand what has happened and its implications. An understanding of guilt, shame, and other common reactions as well as an appreciation of the role of secondary losses and the unique challenges facing children in communities characterized by chronic trauma and cumulative loss will help the pediatrician to address factors that may impair children's adjustment and to identify complicated mourning and situations when professional counseling is indicated. Advice on how to support children's participation in funerals and other memorial services and to anticipate and address grief triggers and anniversary reactions is provided so that pediatricians are in a better position to advise caregivers and to offer consultation to and collaborate with professionals in schools, early education and child care facilities, and other child congregate care sites. Pediatricians often enter their profession out of a profound desire to minimize the suffering of children and may find it personally challenging to bear witness to the distress of children who are acutely grieving. The importance of professional preparation and self-care is, therefore, emphasized, and resources are recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Parents and family caregivers of children with severe neurologic impairment (SNI) experience many stressors, especially during their child's critical illness. This study aimed to examine parent experiences around the time of their child's PICU care to explore ways parents make meaning in relation to these stressors. METHODS This qualitative study of data from a single center in the United States followed Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research guidelines. One to one semistructured interviews queried parents' psychosocial well-being around the time of their child's PICU care. Eligible participants had a child with an SNI condition for >3 months admitted to the PICU for >24 hours with an expected length of stay >1 week. RESULTS Data were analyzed by a research team with expertise in palliative care, psychology, critical care, and qualitative methods. Fifteen family caregivers of 15 children participated. Children were a median of 8 years old (interquartile range 4-11.5) and 80% (n = 12) had congenital/genetic conditions. Parent/family caregivers were a median age of 39 years old (interquartile range 36-42.5); 20% (n = 3) self-identified as fathers and 47% (n = 7) as having to a minority racial background. Parents discussed ongoing meaning-making that occurred through domains of comprehension and purpose, and themes of understanding of other people and the world around them. Subthemes focused on appreciation/acceptance, adaptability/accountability, valuing all lives, and learning/teaching about their child. CONCLUSIONS Meaning-making may be an opportunity for support in the PICU among parents/family caregivers of children with SNI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Parents of children who died of a medical condition experience a range of psychosocial outcomes. The current scoping review aims to summarize the outcomes assessed, methodology, and sample characteristics of recent psychosocial research conducted with this population. METHODS Included studies were limited to peer-reviewed, psychosocial outcomes research published between August 2011 and August 2022, written in English, and including caregiver study participants of children who died of a medical condition. Data sources were scholarly journal articles from 9 electronic databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, Academic Search Primer, ProQuest Research Library, PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection, and Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool-2018 evaluated methodological quality. RESULTS The study sample included 106 studies, most of which were either qualitative (60%) or quantitative (29%). Mixed-methods studies (8%) and randomized clinical trials (2%) were also identified. Study quality was variable, but most studies met all quality criteria (73%). Studies primarily represented cancer populations (58%), White participants (71%), and mothers (66%). Risk-based psychosocial outcomes (e.g., grief) were more commonly assessed than resilience-based outcomes. CONCLUSIONS The current scoping review revealed that recent research assessing the psychosocial outcomes of bereaved parents is limited in the representation of diverse populations, primarily qualitative, of broadly strong methodological quality, and oriented to psychosocial risk. To enhance the state of the science and inform evidence-based psychosocial services, future research should consider varied methodologies to comprehensively assess processes of risk and resilience with demographically and medically diverse populations.

Abstract
Factors associated with posttraumatic growth (PTG) are investigated in mothers who have suffered fetal or infant death. Mothers (N = 66) completed the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI; Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996), the Core Beliefs Inventory (CBI; Cann et al., 2010), and answered questions about the severity of their loss, age of fetus or infant, time since loss, social support, finding meaning, and involvement in loss-related behavior. Results indicate a greatly traumatic loss (M = 4.41), a great degree of core belief disruption (M = 3.57), and a moderate level of PTG (M = 2.80). CBI scores are positively correlated with severity of the loss and age of the fetus or infant. PTGI scores are positively related to CBI scores and to social support from family and friends who have suffered similar losses and support groups. PTG and finding meaning are positively correlated with involvement in loss-related activities and supporting others.

Abstract
Background: Coping styles employed by parents of children with cancer have significant implications for parents' and children's well-being. To supplement the minimal literature in this area, activism (participation in activities that serve to benefit children with cancer as a group) was investigated as a potential coping strategy. Method: Parents (N = 67) of children with cancer completed an online survey that included measures of COPE inventory (COPE), hopefulness (Adult Hope Scale), and depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9-item). Participants retrospectively reported their engagement in activism to benefit children with cancer and to benefit other causes, including actions that were taken before and after their child's cancer diagnosis. Relations between activism, overall styles of coping, hopefulness, and depression were assessed. Results: Activism was positively correlated with hope and active coping, but not associated with depression. Participants reported a significant increase in childhood-cancer-related activism following their own child's diagnosis, with 100% of parents endorsing engagement in such activism. Postdiagnosis childhood-cancer-related activism uniquely explained 17% of the variance in hopefulness after other forms of activism had been accounted for. Discussion: Childhood-cancer-related activism is a common activity among parents of children with cancer that has significant implications for parental hopefulness. Parents who endorse an active, solution-focused approach to coping with the childhood cancer experience may be more likely than others to engage in activism. Further research is needed to clarify the role of activism in the lives of families of children with cancer.

Abstract
Whether death occurs in the context of a chronic illness or as the sudden loss of a previously healthy infant, child, or adolescent, the death of a child is a highly stressful and traumatic event. Psychosocial support for families after the death of a child embodies core medical values of professional fidelity, compassion, respect for human dignity, and promotion of the best interests of a grieving family. The pediatrician has an important role in supporting the family unit after the death of a child through a family-centered, culturally humble, trauma-informed approach. This clinical report aims to provide the pediatrician with a review of the current evidence on grief, bereavement, and mourning after the loss of a child and with practical guidance to support family caregivers, siblings, and the child's community. Pediatricians have an important role in helping siblings and helping families understand sibling needs during grief. Ways for pediatricians to support family members with cultural sensitivity are suggested and other helpful resources in the community are described.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neonatal death is often preceded by end-of-life medical decisions. This study aimed to determine whether the context of death - after a decision of withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining treatment (WWLST) or despite maximum care - was associated with subsequent risk of parental anxiety or depression. The secondary objective was to assess parents' perceptions of end-of-life care according to death context. METHODS Prospective single center observational study of all neonatal deaths in a neonatal intensive care unit over a 5-year period. Data were collected during hospitalization and from face-to-face interviews with parents 3 months after the infant's death. Anxiety and depression were assessed using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaires, completed by parents 5 and 15 months after death. RESULTS Of 179 deaths, 115 (64%) occurred after the WWLST decision and 64 (36%) despite maximum care. Parental satisfaction with newborn care and received support by professionals and relatives was higher in the first condition. Sixty-one percent of parents (109/179) attended the 3-month interview, with the distribution between groups very close to that of hospitalization. The completion rates of the HADS questionnaires by the parents who attended the 3-month interview were 75% (82/109) at 5 months and 65% (71/109) at 15 months. HADS scores at 5 months were consistent with anxiety in at least one parent in 73% (60/82) of cases and with depression in 50% (41/82). At 15 months, these rates were, respectively, 63% (45/71) and 28% (20/71). Risk of depression at 5 months was lower after a WWLST decision (OR 0.35 [0.14, 0.88], p = 0.02). Explicit parental agreement with the WWLST decision had an equivocal impact on the risk of anxiety at 5 months, being higher when expressed during hospitalization, but not at the 3-month interview. CONCLUSIONS Context of death has a significant impact on the emotional experience of parents after neonatal loss, which underlines the importance of systematic follow-up conversations with bereaved parents.

Abstract
Aim A follow‐up conversation with bereaved parents is a relatively well‐established intervention in paediatric clinical practice. Yet, the content and value of these conversations remain unclear. This review aims to provide insight into the content of follow‐up conversations between bereaved parents and regular healthcare professionals (HCPs) in paediatrics and how parents and HCPs experience these conversations. Methods Systematic literature review using the methods PALETTE and PRISMA. The search was conducted in PubMed and CINAHL on 3 February 2021. The results were extracted and integrated using thematic analysis. Results Ten articles were included. This review revealed that follow‐up conversations are built around three key elements: (1) gaining information, (2) receiving emotional support and (3) facilitating parents to provide feedback. In addition, this review showed that the vast majority of parents and HCPs experienced follow‐up conversations as meaningful and beneficial for several reasons. Conclusion An understanding of what parents and HCPs value in follow‐up conversations aids HCPs in conducting follow‐up conversations and improves care for bereaved parents by enhancing the HCPs' understanding of parental needs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify the prevalence of screening criteria for acute and posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSDs) and stress symptoms among family members of children in the PICU for more than 8 days and examine risk factors for stress symptoms. DESIGN Secondary analysis of data from a randomized trial of a palliative care intervention conducted between 2010 and 2014. SETTING An urban pediatric hospital in Seattle, WA. SUBJECTS The sample included 377 family members of 220 children. INTERVENTIONS Family Communication Study. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Outcomes were symptom scores and diagnostic screening criteria for acute stress disorder (ASD) and PTSD. Predictors included demographic- and admission-related characteristics and hypothesized risk factors for developing stress-related mental health disorders. The mean score for acute stress symptoms during the ICU stay was 40.3 (sd = 13.8) and 59 family members in total met diagnostic screening criteria for ASD during hospitalization (15.6%). At 3-month follow-up, the mean score for posttraumatic stress symptoms was 30.8 (sd = 12.9) and 52 family members met diagnostic criteria for PTSD (13.8%). Factors associated with meeting ASD screening criteria were unplanned admission and poorer family relationships. Factors associated with PTSD symptoms and diagnosis were longer length of stay, meeting ASD criteria during admission, child's death, and less perceived social support. CONCLUSIONS Meeting screening criteria for PTSD was associated with demographic, length of stay, and family relationships among family members of seriously ill children. PTSD outcomes were higher among family members whose child died. This study helps identify risk factors that can be used to target needed psychosocial screening, monitoring and support during and following a prolonged PICU admission, as well as family-centered interventions and supportive bereavement intervention for the family members of a deceased child.

Abstract
In this research article we explored the dialogical mechanisms of ideological meaning making in the aftermath of traumatic loss, via descriptive phenomenological qualitative research. Thirty-three individuals who lost a close family member in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict were interviewed regarding the dialogues they had about their ideology in the aftermath of their loss. Analysis identified four types of dialogues that assisted in ideological meaning making: dialogue with political figures, dialogue with and through the media, dialogue with the deceased, and dialogue with radicalized bereaved individuals. Applications of our findings to the constructivist theory of bereavement are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intensivists are increasingly attuned to the postdischarge outcomes experienced by families because patient recovery and family outcomes are interdependent after childhood critical illness. In this scoping review of international contemporary literature, we describe the evidence of family effects and functioning postpediatric intensive care unit (PICU) as well as outcome measures used to identify strengths and weaknesses in the literature. METHODS We reviewed all articles published between 1970 and 2017 in PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), or the Cochrane Controlled Trials Registry. Our search used a combination of terms for the concept of "critical care/illness" combined with additional terms for the prespecified domains of social, cognitive, emotional, physical, health-related quality of life (HRQL), and family functioning. RESULTS We identified 71 articles reporting on the postPICU experience of more than 2400 parents and 3600 families of PICU survivors in 8 countries. These articles used 101 different metrics to assess the various aspects of family outcomes; 34 articles also included open-ended interviews. Overall, most families experienced significant disruption in at least five out of six of our family outcomes subdomains, with themes of decline in mental health, physical health, family cohesion, and family finances identified. Almost all articles represented relatively small, single-center, or disease-specific observational studies. There was a disproportionate representation of families of higher socioeconomic status (SES) and Caucasian race, and there was much more data about mothers compared to fathers. There was also very limited information regarding outcomes for siblings and extended family members after a child's PICU stay. CONCLUSIONS Significant opportunities remain for research exploring family functioning after PICU discharge. We recommend that future work include more diverse populations with respect to the critically ill child as well as family characteristics, include more intervention studies, and enrich existing knowledge about outcomes for siblings and extended family.

Abstract
Role confusion is a prominent constituent symptom of Prolonged Grief Disorder in parents after their infants die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). We interviewed 31 parents of SIDS infants 2-5 years post-loss examining the parental role before death, at the time of loss, and in bereavement. Thematic analysis found disruption of the role and re-imagined responsibilities for their child's physical security, emotional security, and meaning. Tasks within these domains changed from concrete and apparent to representational and self-generated. Parents in bereavement locate ongoing, imperative parental responsibilities, particularly asserting their child's meaningful place in the world and in their family.

Abstract
Despite evidence regarding the value of palliative care, there remains a translation-to-practice gap in the intensive care setting. The purpose of this article is to describe challenges and propose solutions to palliative care integration through the presentation and discussion of a critical care patient scenario. We also present recommendations for a collaborative palliative care practice framework that holds the potential to improve quality of life for patients and families. Collaborative palliative care is characterized by close working relationships with families, interprofessional intensive care unit healthcare teams, and palliative care specialists. The shortage of palliative care specialists has become a pressing policy and practice issue and highlights the importance of increasing primary palliative care delivery by the intensive care team. Underexplored aspects of collaborative palliative care delivery include the interprofessional communication required, identification of key skills, and expected outcomes. Increased recognition of intensive care unit palliative care as a process of engagement among nurses, providers, patients, and their family members heralds a vital culture shift toward collaborative palliative care. The interprofessional palliative specialist team has the expertise to support intensive care teams in developing their primary palliative skills and recognizing when specialist palliative care support is required. Promotion of strategic palliative care delivery through this collaborative framework has the potential to decrease suffering among patients and families and reduce moral distress among healthcare professionals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Meaning-making may assist individuals in adaptation to stressful life events, particularly bereavement. However, few studies have examined meaning-making among pediatric populations with advanced illness to understand how this process unfolds before the child's death. This study explores meaning-making pre-bereavement among children with advanced cancer and their parents. METHODS As part of a larger study examining shared decision-making near the end of life, 24 children with advanced cancer and/or high-risk cancer, 26 mothers, and 11 fathers participated in individual, semi-structured interviews. Analyses focused on questions regarding meaning-making. Four coders analyzed the data via directed content analysis. RESULTS Three major meaning-making themes emerged: (1) sense-making (i.e., unknown, no sense/meaning, religious/spiritual explanations, scientific explanations), (2) benefit-finding, and (3) purpose/legacy. Some stated they were unable to make sense of the diagnosis, because there was no reason, they were not there yet, or they were dealing with the situation and moving forward. Others reported finding meaning through spiritual and scientific explanations. Many identified benefits related to the child's illness, such as personal growth and stronger relationships. Some parents expressed their purpose in life was to live for their children, while others shared their child's legacy as a way to find meaning. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight the struggle children and parents often face when attempting to make sense of the child's advanced or high-risk illness. Clinicians might consider if meaning-centered interventions designed for use in adults at the end of life and bereaved parents may be helpful for children with advanced or high-risk cancer and their parents.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the needs of bereaved parents in Greece (N = 56) regarding the provision of hospital based bereavement services after the death of their child to cancer. The participants did not receive formal or informal hospital based bereavement services. The majority of the parents (84%) stated that, given the opportunity, they would attend a bereavement program. Continuity of care in bereavement from the health care team, availability, individualized care, interdisciplinary approach and contact with other bereaved parents were described as key elements for the provision of bereavement services.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Regret about loss is one of the most intense types of regret experienced in life. Little is known about the bereavement regret of parents whose child has died of cancer. Although knowledge about parents' experiences after their child's death is vital for supporting these families, parents' regret is mostly hidden from the treating clinical staff. This study aimed to explore these parents' regret themes and their impact on their future lives. METHODS An explorative questionnaire was sent to bereaved parents who lost a child to cancer. A total of 26 parents responded to the questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. RESULTS Regret experiences were shared by almost all participants. The focus of regret issues include parenting and interaction with the child, reflection on existing values, dealing with the disease, and neglecting the remaining siblings. The regret experience had an impact on prioritizing values, future lifestyle and contacts. CONCLUSIONS Regret seems to be a general phenomenon among bereaved parents and strongly influences the grieving process, in the sense of reflecting on past experiences to reorient for future actions. As this study was explorative, it is significant toward deepening the understanding of bereavement regret in future. These insights are crucial when working with affected families to help them decide important issues they can care about now and will not regret later.

Abstract
The organ donation process is complex and stressful for the family of the potential donor and members of the multidisciplinary team who may experience grief, ethical dilemmas, vicarious trauma, or compassion fatigue. Several studies each explore the role of a specific healthcare group and the impact of inhospital processes on group members. We conducted a systematic literature search to identify such studies and a qualitative synthesis to consolidate findings and highlight features of the interaction and relationships between role players. Our results suggest that, while healthcare professionals have different roles, attitudes, and views, the experience of stressors and interdisciplinary tension is common. Nevertheless, staff are united by the goal of caring for the patient and family. We therefore propose that, while focusing on bereavement care and other aspects of the family's experience, staff can find other shared goals and develop understanding, trust, empathy, and respect for each other's positions, thereby improving functioning in the complex adaptive system that forms at this time. Education and training can equip staff to facilitate anticipatory mourning, family-led activities, and a meaningful parting from their relative, assisting families with their grief and increasing staff members' efficacy, confidence, and interdisciplinary teamwork. Knowledge of systems thinking and opportunities to share ideas and experiences will enable staff to appreciate each other's roles, while supportive mentors, self-care strategies, and meaningful feedback between role players will foster healthy adjustment and shared learning. A focus on psychosocial outcomes such as family satisfaction with the process, collaboration within the multidisciplinary team, and reduction in the role stress of healthcare professionals will contribute to family well-being as well as personal and professional growth for staff.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Death of one's infant is devastating to parents, negatively impacting couple relationships and their own health. The impact of a prenatally diagnosed life-limiting fetal condition (LLFC) on parents of minority status is unclear. AIM This comparative mixed methods case study examined the person characteristics, quality of perinatal palliative care (PPC) received and parent health outcomes. METHODS Bereaved couples, 11 mothers and 3 fathers of minority or mixed races (11 African American and Latino, 1 White Latino and 2 White parents) completed the survey; 7 were interviewed. RESULTS Parents rated their general health close to good, physical health close to normal but mental health lower than the population norm. Clinical caseness (abnormal levels) of anxiety were reported in 50% of parents whereas depression scores were normal. The experience of fetal diagnosis and infant death had a negative impact on the health of 40% of participants however, parents could not identify what specifically caused their health problems. Most were satisfied with their PPC but some shared that original providers were not supportive of pregnancy continuation. After the baby's death, 71% reported closer/stronger couple relationships. Two contrasting cases are presented. Once parents found PPC, their baby was treated as a person, they spent time with their baby after birth, and found ways to make meaning through continuing bonds. CONCLUSION Despite high overall satisfaction with PPC, bereaved parents were deeply impacted by their infant's death. Mixed methods case study design illuminated the complicated journeys of parents continuing their pregnancy with a LLFC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand the meanings assigned by bereaved parents to their relationships with healthcare professionals during the end-of-life hospitalization of their child. METHOD Qualitative-interpretative study based on hermeneutics. Data were collected from interviews with parents who were grieving the death of a child with cancer in the hospital and participant observation in an oncology ward. Deductive thematic analysis for data interpretation ensued. RESULTS The experience of parents is the sum of all relationships during treatment. Therefore, meanings form a tangle of interrelated senses built not only in the interaction with these professionals, but also with the child and with grief itself. In relationships with professionals, meanings related to the memories of the child, negative emotions and regret were identified. CONCLUSION The experiences and meanings of grief are shaped by the social processes and interactions experienced by the family in the hospital. The relationship with the professionals represents part of the support in coping with the grief after the child's death in the hospital, due to the perpetuity of the love shown for the child as a possible legacy in the legitimacy of the experienced interactions.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe how adolescent and young adult survivors and their mother-caregivers ascribe meaning to their post-brain tumor survivorship experience, with a focus on sense making and benefit findings and intersections with religious engagement. PARTICIPANTS & SETTING Adolescent and young adult survivors of childhood brain tumors and their families, living in their community settings. METHODOLOGIC APPROACH Secondary analysis of simultaneous and separate individual, semistructured interviews of the 40 matched dyads (80 total interviews) occurred using conventional content analysis across and within dyads. Meaning is interpreted through narrative profiles of expectations for function and independence. FINDINGS Participants made sense of the brain tumor diagnosis by finding benefits and nonbenefits unique to their experiences. Meaning was framed in either nonreligious or religious terms. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING Acknowledging positive meaning alongside negative or neutral meaning could enhance interactions with survivors, caregivers, and their families. Exploring the meaning of their experiences may help them to reconstruct meaning and reframe post-tumor realities through being heard and validated.

Abstract
This study explored the relational dimensions of grieving within the family unit. Three families bereaved of a child, participated. Using the Qualitative Action-Project Method, individual and joint interviews were conducted with family members. Data analysis illuminated family grieving processes and demonstrated that grieving was an interactive process with individual, dyadic, multi-adic, and community levels of processing. The family grieving process included intentionality in grieving together and separately, recognition of differing grieving styles, and meaning came through the incorporation of ongoing rituals and remembrances. A finding emerged of family connection facilitated through an ongoing, shared, continuing bond with the deceased child.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe practical considerations and approaches to best practices for end-of-life care for critically ill children and families in the PICU. DATA SOURCES Literature review, personal experience, and expert opinion. STUDY SELECTION A sampling of the foundational and current evidence related to the withdrawal of life-sustaining therapies in the context of childhood critical illness and injury was accessed. DATA EXTRACTION Moderated by the authors and supported by lived experience. DATA SYNTHESIS Narrative review and experiential reflection. CONCLUSIONS Consequences of childhood death in the PICU extend beyond the events of dying and death. In the context of withdrawal of life-sustaining therapies, achieving a quality death is impactful both in the immediate and in the longer term for family and for the team. An individualized approach to withdrawal of life-sustaining therapies that is informed by empiric and practical knowledge will ensure best care of the child and support the emotional well-being of child, family, and the team. Adherence to the principles of holistic and compassionate end-of-life care and an ongoing commitment to provide the best possible experience for withdrawal of life-sustaining therapies can achieve optimal end-of-life care in the most challenging of circumstances.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Losing a loved one in the intensive care unit can be challenging for families. Providing bereavement support may assist in the grieving process. OBJECTIVE To describe family members' experiences with bereavement after the death of a loved one in the intensive care unit. METHODS This secondary analysis used an exploratory, descriptive design to study family members' experiences with bereavement. Family members of patients from 2 intensive care units in a tertiary medical center in the western United States participated. Audiotaped telephone interviews using a semistructured questionnaire were conducted. A qualitative, descriptive technique was used for data analysis. Two independent raters coded transcripts of audiotaped interviews with family members about their bereavement experiences. RESULTS Seventeen family members participated in the study. Most participants were female (n = 12; 71%) and spouses of deceased patients (n = 14; 82%), and their mean (SD) age was 62.4 (10.0) years. Three themes emerged: (1) bereavement was an individual experience; (2) situations occurring during the intensive care unit encounter remained significant for family members beyond a year after the death; and (3) social, cultural, spiritual, and religious events after the death hold importance for families of patients in the intensive care unit. CONCLUSIONS Bereavement is a challenging experience for families of deceased intensive care unit patients. The themes identified in this study add insight into the experiences of these family members. The results of this study may guide future interventions to help support bereaved families of intensive care unit patients.

Abstract
People seek to spend time in positive experiences, enjoying and savoring. Yet there is no escaping negative experiences, from the mundane (e.g. arguing) to the massive (e.g. death of a child). Might negative experiences confer a hidden benefit to well-being? We propose that they do, in the form of enhanced meaning in life. Research suggests that negative experiences can serve to boost meaning because they stimulate comprehension (understanding how the event fits into a broader narrative of the self, relationships, and the world), a known pillar of meaning in life. Findings on counterfactual thinking, reflecting on events' implications, and encompassing experiences into broad-based accounts of one's identity support the role of comprehension in contributing to life's meaning from unwanted, unwelcome experiences.

Abstract
La experiencia de perder un hijo por cáncer representa para los padres una carga emocional de alto impacto individual, familiar y social que no finaliza con la muerte. Esta revisión integrativa tuvo como objetivo identificar aspectos clave en la experiencia de perder un hijo como consecuencia del cáncer infantil. Los resultados mostraron un patrón (búsqueda de sentido) que rodea seis momentos del proceso de duelo, que pueden ser elementos de intervención para acompañar el proceso de afrontamiento de los padres. Se concluye que este patrón es un fenómeno importante para el desarrollo del área de cuidado paliativo al final de la vida y posterior.

Abstract
The death of someone close to a child often has a profound and lifelong effect on the child and results in a range of both short- and long-term reactions. Pediatricians, within a patient-centered medical home, are in an excellent position to provide anticipatory guidance to caregivers and to offer assistance and support to children and families who are grieving. This clinical report offers practical suggestions on how to talk with grieving children to help them better understand what has happened and its implications and to address any misinformation, misinterpretations, or misconceptions. An understanding of guilt, shame, and other common reactions, as well an appreciation of the role of secondary losses and the unique challenges facing children in communities characterized by chronic trauma and cumulative loss, will help the pediatrician to address factors that may impair grieving and children's adjustment and to identify complicated mourning and situations when professional counseling is indicated. Advice on how to support children's participation in funerals and other memorial services and to anticipate and address grief triggers and anniversary reactions is provided so that pediatricians are in a better position to advise caregivers and to offer consultation to schools, early education and child care facilities, and other child congregate care sites. Pediatricians often enter their profession out of a profound desire to minimize the suffering of children and may find it personally challenging when they find themselves in situations in which they are asked to bear witness to the distress of children who are acutely grieving. The importance of professional preparation and self-care is therefore emphasized, and resources are recommended.

Abstract
PURPOSE This qualitative study examined how bereaved individuals from Honduras responded to deaths of loved ones, particularly through exploring circumstances surrounding deaths and various coping strategies. METHODS With the help of a translator, bereaved family members in Honduras were interviewed using a semi-structured format. The interactions were audio-recorded and later translated and transcribed. RESULTS Some 60% of individuals spent time with other family members during their loved one's end of life and 22.5% of grieving individuals took solace in spirituality or religious practices and connecting with God. Some 40% wanted to speak with others through support groups. When individuals spoke about remembering the deceased, both comforting and discomforting effects were expressed. CONCLUSIONS Further research is needed to learn more about coping strategies in various cultures and support mechanisms that health professionals can use or suggest when working with bereaved individuals.

Abstract
Parent-physician bereavement meetings may benefit parents by facilitating sense making, which is associated with healthy adjustment after a traumatic event. Prior research suggests a reciprocal relationship between sense making and positive emotions. We analyzed parents' use of emotion words during bereavement meetings to better understand parents' emotional reactions during the meeting and how their emotional reactions related to their appraisals of the meeting. Parents' use of positive emotion words increased, suggesting the meetings help parents make sense of the death. Parents' use of positive emotion words was negatively related to their own and/or their spouse's appraisals of the meeting, suggesting that parents who have a positive emotional experience during the meeting may also have a short-term negative reaction. Language analysis can be an effective tool to understand individuals' ongoing emotions and meaning making processes during interventions to reduce adverse consequences of a traumatic event, such as a child's death.
