Robust singlet fission in pentacene thin films with tuned charge transfer interactions

Singlet fission in TIPS-anthracene thin films

Singlet fission is an exciton multiplication process that allows for the conversion of one singlet exciton into two triplet excitons. Organic semiconductors, such as acenes and their soluble bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) (TIPS) substituted counterparts, have played a major role in elucidating the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of singlet fission. Despite this, one prominent member of the acene family that has received little experimental attention to date is TIPS-anthracene, even with computational studies suggesting potential high singlet fission yields in the solid state. Here, time-resolved spectroscopic and magneto-photoluminescence measurements were performed on spin-cast films of TIPS-anthracene, showing evidence for singlet fission. A singlet fission yield of 19% (out of 200%) is estimated from transient absorption spectroscopy. Kinetic modeling of the magnetic field effect on photoluminescence suggests that fast rates of triplet dissociation lead to a low magnetic photoluminescence effect and that non-radiative decay of both the S1 and 1(TT) states is the cause for the low triplet yield.

Elucidating Singlet-Fission-Born Multiexciton Dynamics via Molecular Engineering: A Dilution Principle Extended to Quintet Triplet Pair

Multiexciton in singlet exciton fission represents a critical quantum state with significant implications for both solar cell applications and quantum information science. Two distinct fields of interest explore contrasting phenomena associated with the geminate triplet pair: one focusing on the persistence of long-lived correlation and the other emphasizing efficient decorrelation. Despite the pivotal nature of multiexciton processes, a comprehensive understanding of their dependence on the structural and spin properties of materials is currently lacking in experimental realizations. To address this gap in knowledge, molecular engineering was employed to modify the TIPS-tetracene structures, enabling an investigation of the structure-property relationships in spin-related multiexciton processes. In lieu of the time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance technique, two time-resolved magneto-optical spectroscopies were implemented for quantitative analysis of spin-dependent multiexciton dynamics. The utilization of absorption and fluorescence signals as complementary optical readouts, in the presence of a magnetic field, provided crucial insights into geminate triplet pair dynamics. These insights encompassed the duration of multiexciton correlation and the involvement of the spin state in multiexciton decorrelation. Furthermore, simulations based on our kinetic models suggested a role for quintet dilution in multiexciton dynamics, surpassing the singlet dilution principle established by the Merrifield model. The integration of intricate model structures and time-resolved magneto-optical spectroscopies served to explicitly elucidate the interplay between structural and spin properties in multiexciton processes. This comprehensive approach not only contributes to the fundamental understanding of these processes but also aligns with and reinforces previous experimental studies of solid states and theoretical assessments.

Evolution of the pentacene exciton band width in pentacene-tetracene blends

Pentacene is one of the most investigated organic semiconductors. It is well known that the motion of excitons in pentacene and other organic semiconductors is determined by inter-molecular exciton coupling based on charge-transfer processes. In the present study, we demonstrate the impact of the admixture of tetracene, which has a larger band gap and interrupts the pentacene-pentacene interaction, on the exciton behavior in pentacene. Using a combination of optical absorption and electron energy-loss spectroscopy, we show that both the Davydov splitting and the exciton band width in pentacene strongly decrease with increasing tetracene concentration, while the decrease of the exciton band width is substantially larger.

Simultaneous Intra- and Intermolecular Singlet Fission in Bipentacene Macrocycle Aggregates

Singlet fission (SF) is a process where a singlet state splits into two triplet states, which is essential for enhancing optoelectronic devices. Macrocyclic structures allow for precise control of chromophore orientation and facilitate singlet fission in solutions. However, the behavior of these structures in thin films, crucial for solid-state device optimization, remains underexplored. This study examines the aggregation and singlet fission processes of bipentacene macrocycles (BPc) in thin films using molecular dynamics simulations and electronic structure calculations. Findings indicate that BPc aggregates more rapidly with less chloroform, aligning parallel to the substrate. Intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) rates are rarely changed during evaporation, but the efficiency of intermolecular singlet fission (xSF) improves due to the increase in packing domains, suggesting that orderly crystal domains are not necessary for device efficiency. This opens avenues for varied device designs and traditional solution-based methods for optimal device development.

Optical Absorption Properties in Pentacene/Tetracene Solid Solutions

Modifying the optical and electronic properties of crystalline organic thin films is of great interest for improving the performance of modern organic semiconductor devices. Therein, the statistical mixing of molecules to form a solid solution provides an opportunity to fine-tune optical and electronic properties. Unfortunately, the diversity of intermolecular interactions renders mixed organic crystals highly complex, and a holistic picture is still lacking. Here, we report a study of the optical absorption properties in solid solutions of pentacene and tetracene, two prototypical organic semiconductors. In the mixtures, the optical properties can be continuously modified by statistical mixing at the molecular level. Comparison with time-dependent density functional theory calculations on occupationally disordered clusters unravels the electronic origin of the low energy optical transitions. The disorder partially relaxes the selection rules, leading to additional optical transitions that manifest as optical broadening. Furthermore, the contribution of diabatic charge-transfer states is modified in the mixtures, reducing the observed splitting in the 0-0 vibronic transition. Additional comparisons with other blended systems generalize our results and indicate that changes in the polarizability of the molecular environment in organic thin-film blends induce shifts in the absorption spectrum.

Promoting multiexciton interactions in singlet fission and triplet fusion upconversion dendrimers

Singlet fission and triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion are two multiexciton processes intimately related to the dynamic interaction between one high-lying energy singlet and two low-lying energy triplet excitons. Here, we introduce a series of dendritic macromolecules that serve as platform to study the effect of interchromophore interactions on the dynamics of multiexciton generation and decay as a function of dendrimer generation. The dendrimers (generations 1-4) consist of trimethylolpropane core and 2,2-bis(methylol)propionic acid (bis-MPA) dendrons that provide exponential growth of the branches, leading to a corona decorated with pentacenes for SF or anthracenes for TTA-UC. The findings reveal a trend where a few highly ordered sites emerge as the dendrimer generation grows, dominating the multiexciton dynamics, as deduced from optical spectra, and transient absorption spectroscopy. While the dendritic structures enhance TTA-UC at low annihilator concentrations in the largest dendrimers, the paired chromophore interactions induce a broadened and red-shifted excimer emission. In SF dendrimers of higher generations, the triplet dynamics become increasingly dominated by pairwise sites exhibiting strong coupling (Type II), which can be readily distinguished from sites with weaker coupling (Type I) by their spectral dynamics and decay kinetics.

Orbital-resolved observation of singlet fission

Singlet fission1-13 may boost photovoltaic efficiency14-16 by transforming a singlet exciton into two triplet excitons and thereby doubling the number of excited charge carriers. The primary step of singlet fission is the ultrafast creation of the correlated triplet pair17. Whereas several mechanisms have been proposed to explain this step, none has emerged as a consensus. The challenge lies in tracking the transient excitonic states. Here we use time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to observe the primary step of singlet fission in crystalline pentacene. Our results indicate a charge-transfer mediated mechanism with a hybridization of Frenkel and charge-transfer states in the lowest bright singlet exciton. We gained intimate knowledge about the localization and the orbital character of the exciton wave functions recorded in momentum maps. This allowed us to directly compare the localization of singlet and bitriplet excitons and decompose energetically overlapping states on the basis of their orbital character. Orbital- and localization-resolved many-body dynamics promise deep insights into the mechanics governing molecular systems18-20 and topological materials21-23.

Inverse Design of Tetracene Polymorphs with Enhanced Singlet Fission Performance by Property-Based Genetic Algorithm Optimization

The efficiency of solar cells may be improved by using singlet fission (SF), in which one singlet exciton splits into two triplet excitons. SF occurs in molecular crystals. A molecule may crystallize in more than one form, a phenomenon known as polymorphism. Crystal structure may affect SF performance. In the common form of tetracene, SF is experimentally known to be slightly endoergic. A second, metastable polymorph of tetracene has been found to exhibit better SF performance. Here, we conduct inverse design of the crystal packing of tetracene using a genetic algorithm (GA) with a fitness function tailored to simultaneously optimize the SF rate and the lattice energy. The property-based GA successfully generates more structures predicted to have higher SF rates and provides insight into packing motifs associated with improved SF performance. We find a putative polymorph predicted to have superior SF performance to the two forms of tetracene, whose structures have been determined experimentally. The putative structure has a lattice energy within 1.5 kJ/mol of the most stable common form of tetracene.

True molecular conformation and structure determination by three-dimensional electron diffraction of PAH by-products potentially useful for electronic applications

The true molecular conformation and the crystal structure of benzo[e]dinaphtho[2,3-a;1',2',3',4'-ghi]fluoranthene, 7,14-diphenylnaphtho[1,2,3,4-cde]bisanthene and 7,16-diphenylnaphtho[1,2,3,4-cde]helianthrene were determined ab initio by 3D electron diffraction. All three molecules are remarkable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The molecular conformation of two of these compounds could not be determined via classical spectroscopic methods due to the large size of the molecule and the occurrence of multiple and reciprocally connected aromatic rings. The molecular structure of the third molecule was previously considered provisional. These compounds were isolated as by-products in the synthesis of similar products and were at the same time nanocrystalline and available only in very limited amounts. 3D electron diffraction data, taken from submicrometric single crystals, allowed for direct ab initio structure solution and the unbiased determination of the internal molecular conformation. Detailed synthetic routes and spectroscopic analyses are also discussed. Based on many-body perturbation theory simulations, benzo[e]dinaphtho[2,3-a;1',2',3',4'-ghi]fluoranthene may be a promising candidate for triplet-triplet annihilation and 7,14-diphenylnaphtho[1,2,3,4-cde]bisanthene may be a promising candidate for intermolecular singlet fission in the solid state.

Exciton Dynamics in MoS2-Pentacene and WSe2-Pentacene Heterojunctions

We measured the exciton dynamics in van der Waals heterojunctions of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and organic semiconductors (OSs). TMDCs and OSs are semiconducting materials with rich and highly diverse optical and electronic properties. Their heterostructures, exhibiting van der Waals bonding at their interfaces, can be utilized in the field of optoelectronics and photovoltaics. Two types of heterojunctions, MoS₂-pentacene and WSe₂-pentacene, were prepared by layer transfer of 20 nm pentacene thin films as well as MoS₂ and WSe₂ monolayer crystals onto Au surfaces. The samples were studied by means of transient absorption spectroscopy in the reflectance mode. We found that A-exciton decay by hole transfer from MoS₂ to pentacene occurs with a characteristic time of 21 ± 3 ps. This is slow compared to previously reported hole transfer times of 6.7 ps in MoS₂-pentacene junctions formed by vapor deposition of pentacene molecules onto MoS₂ on SiO₂. The B-exciton decay in WSe₂ shows faster hole transfer rates for WSe₂-pentacene heterojunctions, with a characteristic time of 7 ± 1 ps. The A-exciton in WSe₂ also decays faster due to the presence of a pentacene overlayer; however, fitting the decay traces did not allow for the unambiguous assignment of the associated decay time. Our work provides important insights into excitonic dynamics in the growing field of TMDC-OS heterojunctions.

Optical Anisotropy and Momentum-Dependent Excitons in Dibenzopentacene Single Crystals

High-quality single crystals of the organic semiconductor (1,2;8,9)-dibenzopentacene were grown via physical vapor transport. The crystal structure-unknown before-was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction; polarization-dependent optical absorption measurements display a large anisotropy in the ac plane of the crystals. The overall Davydov splitting is ∼110 meV, which is slightly lower than that in the close relative pentacene (120 meV). Momentum-dependent electron energy-loss spectroscopy measurements show a clear exciton dispersion of the Davydov components. An analysis of the dispersion using a simple 1D model indicates smaller electron- and hole-transfer integrals in dibenzopentacene as compared to pentacene. The spectral weight distribution of the excitation spectra is strongly momentum-dependent and demonstrates a strong momentum-dependent admixture of Frenkel excitons, charge-transfer excitons, and vibrational modes.

Singlet Fission Materials for Photovoltaics: from Small Molecules to Macromolecules

Singlet fission (SF) is a spin-allowed process in which a singlet state splits into two triplet states. Materials that enable SF have attracted great attention in the last decade, mainly stemming from the potential of overcoming the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit in photoenergy conversion. In the past decade, a large number of new molecules exhibiting SF have been explored and many devices based on SF materials have been studied, though the mechanistic understanding is still obscure. This review focuses on the recent developments of SF materials, including small molecules, oligomers and polymers. The molecular design strategies and related mechanisms of SF are discussed. Then the dynamics of charge transfer and energy transfer between SF materials and other materials are introduced. Further, we discuss the progresses of implementing SF in photovoltaics. It is hoped that a comprehensive understanding to the SF materials, devices and mechanism may pave a new way for the design of next generation photovoltaics. This article is protected by copyright. Induced axial chirality by a tight belt: naphthalene chromophores fixed in a 2,5-substituted cofacial para-phenylene-ethynylene framework

We report the design of a synthetically easy accessible axial chirality-inducing framework for a chromophore of choice. The scaffold consists of two basic para-phenylene-ethynylene backbones separated by laterally placed corner units. Substitution with an inherently achiral chromophore at the 2 and 5 positions of the central phenylene excitonically couples the chromophore associated transition and thereby results in chiroptical properties. Using 6-methoxynaphthalene as a model chromophore, we present the synthesis, structural analysis and spectroscopic investigation of the framework. The chiral framework was synthesized in three straightforward synthetic steps and fully characterized. The obtained racemic compounds were resolved using HPLC and assignment of the absolute configuration was performed using the exciton chirality method, crystallography and DFT calculations. This simple yet potent framework might prove useful to enrich the structural diversity of chiral materials.

Vacancy control in acene blends links exothermic singlet fission to coherence

The fission of singlet excitons into triplet pairs in organic materials holds great technological promise, but the rational application of this phenomenon is hampered by a lack of understanding of its complex photophysics. Here, we use the controlled introduction of vacancies by means of spacer molecules in tetracene and pentacene thin films as a tuning parameter complementing experimental observables to identify the operating principles of different singlet fission pathways. Time-resolved spectroscopic measurements in combination with microscopic modelling enables us to demonstrate distinct scenarios, resulting from different singlet-to-triplet pair energy alignments. For pentacene, where fission is exothermic, coherent mixing between the photoexcited singlet and triplet-pair states is promoted by vibronic resonances, which drives the fission process with little sensitivity to the vacancy concentration. Such vibronic resonances do not occur for endothermic materials such as tetracene, for which we find fission to be fully incoherent; a process that is shown to slow down with increasing vacancy concentration.

3D Electron Diffraction Structure Determination of Terrylene, a Promising Candidate for Intermolecular Singlet Fission

Herein we demonstrate the prowess of the 3D electron diffraction approach by unveiling the structure of terrylene, the third member in the series of peri‐condensed naphthalene analogues, which has eluded structure determination for 65 years. The structure was determined by direct methods using electron diffraction data and corroborated by dispersion‐inclusive density functional theory optimizations. Terrylene crystalizes in the monoclinic space group P2₁/a, arranging in a sandwich‐herringbone packing motif, similar to analogous compounds. Having solved the crystal structure, we use many‐body perturbation theory to evaluate the excited‐state properties of terrylene in the solid‐state. We find that terrylene is a promising candidate for intermolecular singlet fission, comparable to tetracene and rubrene.

Pentacene/perfluoropentacene bilayers on Au(111) and Cu(111): impact of organic-metal coupling strength on molecular structure formation

As crucial element in organic opto-electronic devices, heterostructures are of pivotal importance. In this context, a comprehensive study of the properties on a simplified model system of a donor-acceptor (D-A) bilayer structure is presented, using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and normal-incidence X-ray standing wave (NIXSW) measurements. Pentacene (PEN) as donor and perfluoropentacene (PFP) as acceptor material are chosen to produce bilayer structures on Au(111) and Cu(111) by sequential monolayer deposition of the two materials. By comparing the adsorption behavior of PEN/PFP bilayers on such weakly and strongly interacting substrates, it is found that: (i) the adsorption distance of the first layer (PEN or PFP) indicates physisorption on Au(111), (ii) the characteristics of the bilayer structure on Au(111) are (almost) independent of the deposition sequence, and hence, (iii) in both cases a mixed bilayer is formed on the Au substrate. This is in striking contrast to PFP/PEN bilayers on Cu(111), where strong chemisorption pins PEN molecules to the metal surface and no intermixing is induced by subsequent PFP deposition. The results illustrate the strong tendency of PEN and PFP molecules to mix, which has important implications for the fabrication of PEN/PFP heterojunctions.

Singlet Fission Driven by Anisotropic Vibronic Coupling in Single-Crystalline Pentacene

Vibronic coupling is believed to play an important role in siglet fission, wherein a photoexcited singlet exciton is converted into two triplet excitons. In the present study, we examine the role of vibronic coupling in singlet fission using polarized transient absorption microscopy and ab initio simulations on single-crystalline pentacene. It was found that singlet fission in pentacene is greatly facilitated by the vibrational coherence of a 35.0 cm^-1 phonon, where anisotropic coherence persists extensively for a few picoseconds. This coherence-preserving phonon that drives the anisotropic singlet fission is made possible by a unique cross-axial charge-transfer intermediate state. In the same fashion, this phonon was also found to predominantly drive the quantum decohence of a correlated triplet pair to form a decoupled triplet dimer. Moreover, our transient kinetic experimental data illustrates notable directional anisotropicity of the singlet fission rate in single-crystalline pentacene.

Tailoring the Optical Response of Pentacene Thin Films via Templated Growth on Hexagonal Boron Nitride

The optoelectronic properties of organic thin films are strongly dependent on their molecular orientation and packing, which in turn is sensitive to the underlying substrate. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and other van der Waals (vdW) materials are known to template different organic thin film growth modalities from conventional inorganic substrates such as SiO₂. Here, the morphology and temperature-dependent optical properties of pentacene films grown on hBN are reported. Pentacene deposited on hBN forms large-grain films with a molecular π-face-on orientation unlike the dendritic edge-on thin-film phase on SiO₂. Pentacene/hBN films exhibit a 40 meV lower free exciton emission than pentacene/SiO₂ and an unconventional emission energy temperature dependence. Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) decay measurements show a long-lived signal in the π-face-on phase related to delayed emission from triplet-triplet fusion. This work demonstrates that growth on vdW materials provides a pathway for controlling optoelectronic functionality in molecular thin films.

Structure Dependence of Kinetic and Thermodynamic Parameters in Singlet Fission Processes

Singlet fission-whereby one absorbed photon generates two coupled triplet excitons-is a key process for increasing the efficiency of optoelectronic devices by overcoming the Shockley-Queisser limit. A crucial parameter is the rate of dissociation of the coupled triplets, as this limits the number of free triplets subsequently available for harvesting and ultimately the overall efficiency of the device. Here we present an analysis of the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters for this process in parallel and herringbone dimers measured by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy in coevaporated films of pentacene in p-terphenyl. The rate of dissociation is higher for parallel dimers than for their herringbone counterparts, as is the rate of recombination to the ground state. DFT calculations, which provide the magnitude of the electronic coupling as well as the distribution of molecular orbitals for each geometry, suggest that weaker triplet coupling in the parallel dimer is the driving force for faster dissociation. Conversely, localization of the molecular orbitals and a stronger triplet-triplet interaction result in slower dissociation and recombination. The identification and understanding of how the intermolecular geometry promotes efficient triplet dissociation provide the basis for control of triplet coupling and thereby the optimization of one important parameter of device performance.

Bridge Resonance Effects in Singlet Fission

A major benefit of intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) materials, in which through-bond interactions mediate triplet pair formation, is the ability to control the triplet formation dynamics through molecular engineering. One common design strategy is the use of molecular bridges to mediate interchromophore interactions, decreasing electronic coupling by increasing chromophore-chromophore separation. Here, we report how the judicious choice of aromatic bridges can enhance chromophore-chromophore electronic coupling. This molecular engineering strategy takes advantage of "bridge resonance", in which the frontier orbital energies are nearly degenerate with those of the covalently linked singlet fission chromophores, resulting in fast iSF even at large interchromophore separations. Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we investigate this bridge resonance effect in a series of pentacene and tetracene-bridged dimers, and we find that the rate of triplet formation is enhanced as the bridge orbitals approach resonance. This work highlights the important role of molecular connectivity in controlling the rate of iSF through chemical bonds and establishes critical design principles for future use of iSF materials in optoelectronic devices.

Diffusion-Controlled Singlet Fission in a Chlorinated Phenazinothiadiazole by Broadband Femtosecond Transient Absorption

Singlet fission (SF) is a process by which one excited singlet state yields two triplet states upon close interaction with a ground-state chromophore of the same kind. This photoreaction was first observed in solid state and has important implications in organic photovoltaics. Singlet fission was also reported in concentrated solutions, where the need for diffusion of the reaction partners slows the dynamics. This helps to single out reaction stages and to identify the involved species. In this work, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy and time-correlated single photon counting are applied to the concentration-dependent (from 10^-1 to 10² mM) photodynamics of a tetrachlorinated phenazinothiadiazole in toluene. Time-resolved emission shows a monoexponential decay, which is constant across the emission band. The corresponding decay rate depends linearly on the concentration of the phenazinothiadiazole. Femtosecond transient absorption demonstrates that a concentration-dependent singlet-to-triplet conversion hides behind the emission decay which is diffusion controlled. Contrary to previous reports on SF in pentacenes and tetracenes, no indication of intermediate states has been found. Efficient, direct and barrierless SF is concluded. The strong enhancement of the triplet yield at increasingly higher concentrations of the thiadiazole indicates very efficient singlet fission with a triplet yield up to 189 ± 5%.

Singlet Heterofission in Tetracene-Pentacene Thin-Film Blends

Heterofission is a photophysical process of fundamental and applied interest whereby an excited singlet state is converted into two triplets on chemically distinct chromophores. The potential of this process lies in the tuning of both the optical band gap and the splitting between singlet and triplet energies. Herein, we report the time‐domain observation of heterofission in mixed thin films of the prototypical singlet fission chromophores pentacene and tetracene using excitation wavelengths above and below the tetracene band gap. We found a time constant of 26 ps for endothermic heterofission of a singlet exciton on pentacene in blends with low pentacene fractions, which was outcompeted by pentacene homofission for increasing pentacene concentrations. Direct excitation of tetracene lead to fast energy transfer to pentacene and subsequent singlet fission, which prevented homo‐ or heterofission of a singlet exciton on tetracene.

Observation of magneto-electric rectification at non-relativistic intensities

The subject of electromagnetism has often been called electrodynamics to emphasize the dominance of the electric field in dynamic light–matter interactions that take place under non-relativistic conditions. Here we show experimentally that the often neglected optical magnetic field can nevertheless play an important role in a class of optical nonlinearities driven by both the electric and magnetic components of light at modest (non-relativistic) intensities. We specifically report the observation of magneto-electric rectification, a previously unexplored nonlinearity at the molecular level which has important potential for energy conversion, ultrafast switching, nano-photonics, and nonlinear optics. Our experiments were carried out in nanocrystalline pentacene thin films possessing spatial inversion symmetry that prohibited second-order, all-electric nonlinearities but allowed magneto-electric rectification.

The role of the optical magnetic field is generally not considered at nonrelativistic light intensities. Here the authors show magneto-electric rectification, an optical nonlinear effect due to electric and magnetic field coupling, in a thin film of the organic semiconductor pentacene at non-relativistic intensities.

Triplet Exciton Transfers and Triplet-Triplet Annihilation in Anthracene Derivatives via Direct versus Superexchange Pathways Governed by Molecular Packing

Triplet exciton transfer (TET) and triplet-triplet annihilations (TTAs) in anthracene derivatives, namely, one of the polymorphs of 9,10-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)anthracene (TIPS-ANTp) and 1,2,3,4-tetrafluoro-5,8-bis(trimethylsilylethynyl)anthracene (F4-TMS-ANT), are analyzed theoretically. The electronic couplings for TET and TTA are evaluated by means of the diabatization scheme in conjunction with the time-dependent density functional theory and the multireference second-order Møller-Plesset method. The TET rate is estimated on the basis of Fermi's golden rule considering the Franck-Condon factor of intramolecular modes. TTA is analyzed by means of quantum dynamics calculations with the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method. TET in the cofacially stacked F4-TMS-ANT is faster than that of the slip-stacked TIPS-ANTp. In the anthracene derivatives, a singlet exciton is lower in energy than a pair of triplets. F4-TMS-ANT can exhibit an ultrafast TTA via the superexchange pathway mediated by higher lying charge transfer (CT) states, owing to strong electronic couplings. In contrast, TIPS-ANTp exhibits an inefficient TTA via the direct pathway with a small two-electron coupling. The cofacial stacking decreases the energy gap to the intermediate CT states, thereby facilitating TET and TTA via the superexchange pathway.

Exploiting singlet excited state conformation for rational design of highly efficient photoinduced electron transfer molecules

In spite of the pivotal role of excited state electronic structures as regulation of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process, the effect of excited state conformation on PET remains elusive. Here we exploit distinguishable emission characters of trans and cis singlet excited states of donor-acceptor-donor ensemble MTPAAZO to reveal that its PET efficiency and rate are closely depended on its singlet excited state conformation. The PET process occurs solely in cis conformation of MTPAAZO singlet excited states. Novel molecule (MTPA)₂Ab as-designed with similar structure of MTPAAZO cis singlet excited states shows high PET efficacy and rate, leading to long-lived CS states. Our findings enable the rational design of the novel molecules with highly efficient PET process suitable for charge separation applications.

Molecular Semiconductors for Logic Operations: Dead-End or Bright Future?

The field of organic electronics has been prolific in the last couple of years, leading to the design and synthesis of several molecular semiconductors presenting a mobility in excess of 10 cm² V^-1 s^-1 . However, it is also started to recently falter, as a result of doubtful mobility extractions and reduced industrial interest. This critical review addresses the community of chemists and materials scientists to share with it a critical analysis of the best performing molecular semiconductors and of the inherent charge transport physics that takes place in them. The goal is to inspire chemists and materials scientists and to give them hope that the field of molecular semiconductors for logic operations is not engaged into a dead end. To the contrary, it offers plenty of research opportunities in materials chemistry.

Revealing the Nature of Singlet Fission under the Veil of Internal Conversion

Singlet fission (SF) holds the potential to boost the maximum power conversion efficiency of photovoltaic devices. Internal conversion (IC) has been considered as one of the major competitive deactivation pathways to transform excitation energy into heat. Now, using time-resolved spectroscopy and theoretical calculation, it is demonstrated that, instead of a conventional IC pathway, an unexpected intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) process is responsible for excited state deactivation in isoindigo derivatives. The ¹ TT state could form at ultrafast rate and nearly quantitatively in solution. In solid films, the slipped stacked intermolecular packing of a thiophene-functionalized derivative leads to efficient triplet pair separation, giving rise to an overall triplet yield of 181 %. This work not only enriches the pool of iSF-capable materials, but also contributes to a better understanding of the iSF mechanism, which could be relevant for designing new SF sensitizers.

Impact of non-equilibrium molecular packings on singlet fission in microcrystals observed using 2D white-light microscopy

Singlet fission, the process of splitting a singlet exciton into two triplet excitons, has been proposed as a mechanism for improving the efficiency of future photovoltaic devices. In organic semiconductors exhibiting singlet fission, the geometric relationship between molecules plays an important role by setting the intermolecular couplings that determine the system energetics. Here, we spatially image TIPS-pentacene microcrystals using ultrafast two-dimensional white-light microscopy and discover a low-energy singlet state sparsely distributed throughout the microcrystals, with higher concentrations at edges and morphological defects. The spectra of these singlet states are consistent with slip-stacked molecular geometries and increased charge-transfer couplings. The picosecond-timescale kinetics of these low-energy singlet states matches that of the correlated triplet-pair state, which we attribute to singlet/triplet-pair interconversion at these sites. Our observations support the conclusion that small populations of geometries with favourable energetics can play outsized roles in singlet fission processes.

Morphology independent triplet formation in pentalene films: Singlet fission as the triplet formation mechanism

Singlet fission (SF), a spin-allowed multiexciton generation process, experienced renewed interest in the last decade due to its potential to increase the efficiency of photovoltaic devices. The hurdles now lie in the limited range of SF-capable materials and demanding morphology requirement for an efficient fission process. Although primary fission to yield triplet pair (¹TT) can occur independently of film morphology in intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) materials, the separation of the ¹TT state has been shown to be highly dependent on the packing motif and morphologies. In this work, we have demonstrated that both iSF and triplet pair separation processes took place irrelevant of molecular order and/or film morphology in a series of pentalene compounds. With the >180% fission efficiency, the suitable triplet energy levels, and the long lifetime of the triplet excitons, these iSF systems can be integrated into practical photovoltaic application.

Revealing Suppressed Intermolecular Coupling Effects in Aggregated Organic Semiconductors by Diluting the Crystal: Model System Perfluoropentacene:Picene

In order to investigate the effects of intermolecular interactions on the optical properties of organic semiconductors, we employ mixing of the organic semiconductor perfluoropentacene (PFP; C₂₂F₁₄) with the wide band-gap organic semiconductor picene (PIC; C₂₂H₁₄). The binary mixed thin films are prepared by simultaneous coevaporation of PIC and PFP in vacuum. We determine the optical properties of the blends by differential reflectance spectroscopy (absorption) and photoluminescence (emission). PFP:PIC thin films are a rare case of mixed thin films with a known molecular packing. The formation of equimolar mixed domains with a crystal structure clearly different from that of the pure compounds is, in the case of nonequimolar blends, accompanied by pure domains of the excess compound. Due to the wide band gap of PIC, the effect of reduced intermolecular interactions between PFP molecules can be studied in detail without any direct contributions of PIC to the spectra. We find a strongly enhanced emission from PFP in the mixed thin films, which can be explained by decoupling. Real-time investigations of the absorption spectra during growth provide further insight into intermolecular coupling effects on optical properties.

Resolving population dynamics and interactions of multiple triplet excitons one molecule at a time

Resolving the population dynamics of multiple triplet excitons on time scales comparable to their lifetimes is a key challenge for multiexciton harvesting strategies, such as singlet fission. We show that this information can be obtained from fluorescence quenching dynamics and stochastic kinetic modeling simulations of single nanoparticles comprising self-assembled aggregated chains of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). These multichromophoric structures exhibit the elusive J-aggregate type excitonic coupling leading to delocalized intrachain excitons that undergo facile triplet formation mediated by interchain charge transfer states. We propose that P3HT J-aggregates can serve as a useful testbed for elucidating the presence of multiple triplets and understanding factors governing their interactions over a broad range of time scales. Stochastic kinetic modeling is then used to simulate discrete population dynamics and estimate higher order rate constants associated with triplet-triplet and singlet-triplet annihilation. Together with the quasi-CW nature of the experiment, the model reveals the expected amounts of triplets at equilibrium per molecule. Our approach is also amenable to a variety of other systems, e.g., singlet fission active molecular arrays, and can potentially inform design and optimization strategies to improve triplet harvesting yields.

Substituent effects on energetics and crystal morphology modulate singlet fission in 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracenes

Singlet fission (SF) converts a singlet exciton into two triplet excitons in two or more electronically coupled organic chromophores, which may then be used to increase solar cell efficiency. Many known SF chromophores are unsuitable for device applications due to chemical instability or low triplet state energies. The results described here show that efficient SF occurs in derivatives of 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene (BPEA), which is a highly robust and tunable chromophore. Fluoro and methoxy substituents at the 4- and 4'-positions of the BPEA phenyl groups control the intermolecular packing in the crystal structure, which alters the interchromophore electronic coupling, while also changing the SF energetics. The lowest excited singlet state (S₁) energy of 4,4'-difluoro-BPEA is higher than that of BPEA so that the increased thermodynamic favorability of SF results in a (16 ± 2 ps)^-1 SF rate and a 180% ± 16% triplet yield, which is about an order of magnitude faster than BPEA with a comparable triplet yield. By contrast, 4-fluoro-4'-methoxy-BPEA and 4,4'-dimethoxy-BPEA have slower SF rates, (90 ± 20 ps)^-1 and (120 ± 10 ps)^-1, and lower triplet yields, (110 ± 4)% and (168 ± 7)%, respectively, than 4,4'-difluoro-BPEA. These differences are attributed to changes in the crystal structure controlling interchromophore electronic coupling as well as SF energetics in these polycrystalline solids.

Interplay between Intra- and Intermolecular Charge Transfer in the Optical Excitations of J-Aggregates

In a first-principles study based on density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory, we address the interplay between intra- and intermolecular interactions in a J-aggregate formed by push-pull organic dyes by investigating its electronic and optical properties. We find that the most intense excitation dominating the spectral onset of the aggregate, i.e., the J-band, exhibits a combination of intramolecular charge transfer, coming from the push-pull character of the constituting dyes, and intermolecular charge transfer, due to the dense molecular packing. We also show the presence of a pure intermolecular charge-transfer excitation within the J-band, which is expected to play a relevant role in the emission properties of the J-aggregate. Our results shed light on the microscopic character of optical excitations of J-aggregates and offer new perspectives to further understand the nature of collective excitations in organic semiconductors.

New synthetic approaches for hexacene and its application in thin-film transistors

Hexacene was synthesized at the single molecule level and macroscopic scale, respectively. The film mobility of hexacene was observed at 0.123 cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹.

Polarized absorbance and Davydov splitting in bulk and thin-film pentacene polymorphs

Pentacene is one of the most studied organic materials and in particular its optical properties have been the subject of intense research during the last two decades. In spite of such a widespread interest and of the extensive knowledge achieved so far, a number of issues are still debated. One of the most relevant questions concerns the role of polymorphism and how it affects the lowest-energy exciton, which appears in the visible region and is subject to a sizable Davydov splitting. We address this problem in a combined theoretical and experimental work, where the optical absorption properties of three pentacene polymorphs are investigated within the whole energy range of visible light. Optical spectra computed from first principles in the framework of many-body perturbation theory are directly compared with the polarization-resolved absorbance, measured for three different pentacene phases (the two bulk polymorphs and the thin-film phase). In this way, we unambiguously identify the two Davydov components of the first exciton and the optical fingerprints of each considered phase. With very good agreement between theory and experiment, we show that all polymorphs exhibit common features at the absorption onset, while phase-dependent characteristics appear only above 2 eV. We discuss the character of the lowest-lying singlet and triplet excitons, including dark ones, highlighting the contributions from the electronic bands and the role of the electron-hole interaction and of the local-field effects.

Identifying triplet pathways in dilute pentacene films

Building efficient triplet-harvesting layers for photovoltaic applications requires a deep understanding of the microscopic properties of the components involved and their dynamics. Singlet fission is a particularly appealing mechanism as it generates two excitons from a single photon. However, the pathways of the coupled triplets into free species, and their dependence on the intermolecular geometry, has not been fully explored. In this work, we produce highly ordered dilute pentacene films with distinct parallel and herringbone dimers and aggregates. Using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we provide compelling evidence for the formation of distinct quintet excitons in ambient conditions, with intrinsically distinctive electronic and kinetic properties. We find that the ability of quintets to separate into free triplets is promoted in the parallel dimers and this provides molecular design rules to control the triplets, favouring either enhanced photovoltaic efficiency (parallel) or strongly bound pairs that could be exploited for logic applications (herringbone).

Singlet-Fission-Born Quintet State: Sublevel Selections and Trapping by Multiexciton Thermodynamics

Singlet fission (SF) is expected to exceed the theoretical limit of the solar cell efficiency. Quintet (Q) state generation in triplet-triplet pair is essential for preventing the unwanted loss of SF-born multiexciton through singlet channels, although little is known on the primary multiexciton spin dynamics following the intermolecular SF. In this study, time-resolved EPR revealed the intermolecular multiexciton dynamics, energetics and geometries in aggregated 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene and 2-phenyl-6,11-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)tetracene in diluted frozen solution. We have demonstrated sublevel selective generations of excited quintet states (|Q₀⟩, |Q_-1⟩ and |Q_-2⟩) by singlet-quintet (SQ) mixings during triplet-exciton diffusions within geminate multiexcitons. The present fundamental characteristics of the quintet generations shows strong impact of coexistence of molecularly ordered "hot spot" and disordered regions for exergonic SQ mixings driven by entropy, thereby paving a new avenue for rational designs of organic devices with controlled multiexciton dynamics by optimizing film morphologies.
