Light-Material Interactions Using Laser and Flash Sources for Energy Conversion and Storage Applications

This review provides a comprehensive overview of the progress in light-material interactions (LMIs), focusing on lasers and flash lights for energy conversion and storage applications. We discuss intricate LMI parameters such as light sources, interaction time, and fluence to elucidate their importance in material processing. In addition, this study covers various light-induced photothermal and photochemical processes ranging from melting, crystallization, and ablation to doping and synthesis, which are essential for developing energy materials and devices. Finally, we present extensive energy conversion and storage applications demonstrated by LMI technologies, including energy harvesters, sensors, capacitors, and batteries. Despite the several challenges associated with LMIs, such as complex mechanisms, and high-degrees of freedom, we believe that substantial contributions and potential for the commercialization of future energy systems can be achieved by advancing optical technologies through comprehensive academic research and multidisciplinary collaborations.

Capture and Storage of Cell-Free DNA via Bio-Informational Hydrogel Microspheres

Excessive cell-free DNA (cfDNA) can induce chronic inflammation by activating intracellular nucleic acid sensors. Intervention in cfDNA-mediated "pro-inflammatory signaling transduction" could be a potential alleviating strategy for chronic inflammation, such as in diabetic wounds. However, effectively and specifically downgrading cfDNA concentration in the pathological microenvironment remains a challenge. Therefore, this work prepares free-standing polydopamine nanosheets through DNA-guided assembly and loaded them into microfluidic hydrogel microspheres. The π─π stacking/hydrogen bonding interactions between polydopamine nanosheets and the π-rich bases of cfDNA, along with the cage-like spatial confinement created by the hydrogel polymer network, achieved cfDNA capture and storage, respectively. Catechol in polydopamine nanosheets can also assist in reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Efficient cfDNA binding independent of serum proteins, specific interdiction of abnormal activation of cfDNA-associated toll-like receptor 9, as well as down-regulation of inflammatory cytokines and ROS levels are shown in this system. The chronic inflammation alleviating and the pro-healing effects on the mice model with diabetic wounds are also investigated. This work presents a new strategy for capturing and storing cfDNA to intervene in cell signaling transduction. It also offers new insights into the regulatory mechanisms between inflammatory mediators and biomaterials in inflammation-related diseases.

Interactions of Melanin with Electromagnetic Radiation: From Fundamentals to Applications

Melanin, especially integumentary melanin, interacts in numerous ways with electromagnetic radiation, leading to a set of critical functions, including radiation protection, UV-protection, pigmentary and structural color productions, and thermoregulation. By harnessing these functions, melanin and melanin-like materials can be widely applied to diverse applications with extraordinary performance. Here we provide a unified overview of the melanin family (all melanin and melanin-like materials) and their interactions with the complete electromagnetic radiation spectrum (X-ray, Gamma-ray, UV, visible, near-infrared), which until now has been absent from the literature and is needed to establish a solid fundamental base to facilitate their future investigation and development. We begin by discussing the chemistries and morphologies of both natural and artificial melanin, then the fundamentals of melanin-radiation interactions, and finally the exciting new developments in high-performance melanin-based functional materials that exploit these interactions. This Review provides both a comprehensive overview and a discussion of future perspectives for each subfield of melanin that will help direct the future development of melanin from both fundamental and applied perspectives.

Smart Contact Lens for Colorimetric Visualization of Glucose Levels in the Body Fluid

Frequent blood glucose monitoring is a crucial routine for diabetic patients. Traditional invasive methods can cause discomfort and pain and even pose a risk of infection. As a result, researchers have been exploring noninvasive techniques. However, a limited number of products have been developed for the market due to their high cost. In this study, we developed a low-cost, highly accessible, and noninvasive contact lens-based glucose monitoring system. We functionalized the surface of the contact lens with boronic acid, which has a strong but reversible binding affinity to glucose. To achieve facile conjugation of boronic acid, we utilized a functional coating layer called poly(tannic acid). The functionalized contact lens binds to glucose in body fluids (e.g., tear) and releases it when soaked in an enzymatic cocktail, allowing for the glucose level to be quantified through a colorimetric assay. Importantly, the transparency and oxygen permeability of the contact lens, which are crucial for practical use, were maintained after functionalization, and the lenses showed high biocompatibility. Based on the analysis of colorimetric data generated by the smartphone application and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra, we believe that this contact lens has a high potential to be used as a smart diagnostic tool for monitoring and managing blood glucose levels.

Theoretical insights into dopamine photochemistry adsorbed on graphene-type nanostructures

The equilibrium geometry structures and light absorption properties of the dopamine (DA) and dopamine-o-quinone (DAQ) adsorbed on the graphene surface have been investigated using the ground state and linear-response time-dependent density functional theories. Two types of graphene systems were considered, a rectangular form of hexagonal lattice with optimized C-C bond length as the model system for graphene nanoparticles (GrNP) and a similar system but with fixed C-C bond length (1.42 Å) as the model system for graphene 2D sheet (GrS). The analysis of the vertical excitations showed that three types of electronic transitions are possible, namely, localized on graphene, localized on the DA or DAQ, and charge transfer (CT). In the case of the graphene-DA complex, the charge transfer excitations were characterized by the molecule-to-surface (MSCT) character, whereas the graphene-DAQ was characterized by the reverse, i.e. surface-to-molecule (SMCT). The difference between the two cases is given by the presence of an energetically low-lying unoccupied orbital (LUMO+1) that allows charge transfer from the surface to the molecule in the case of DAQ. However, it was also shown that the fingerprints of excited electronic states associated with the adsorbed molecules cannot be seen in the spectrum, as they are mostly suppressed by the characteristic spectral shape of graphene.

Tuning the Chemical and Electrochemical Properties of Paper-Based Carbon Electrodes by Pyrolysis of Polydopamine

Electrochemical paper-based analytical devices represent an important platform for portable, low-cost, affordable, and decentralized diagnostics. For this kind of application, chemical functionalization plays a pivotal role to ensure high clinical performance by tuning surface properties and the area of electrodes. However, controlling different surface properties of electrodes by using a single functionalization route is still challenging. In this work, we attempted to tune the wettability, chemical composition, and electroactive area of carbon-paper-based devices by thermally treating polydopamine (PDA) at different temperatures. PDA films were deposited onto pyrolyzed paper (PP) electrodes and thermally treated in the range of 300-1000 °C. After deposition of PDA, the surface is rich in nitrogen and oxygen, it is superhydrophilic, and it has a high electroactive area. As the temperature increases, the surface becomes hydrophobic, and the electroactive area decreases. The surface modifications were followed by Raman, X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS), laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM), contact angle, scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), electrical measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical experiments. In addition, the chemical composition of nitrogen species can be tuned on the surface. As a proof of concept, we employed PDA-treated surfaces to anchor [AuCl4]- ions. After electrochemical reduction, we observed that it is possible to control the size of the nanoparticles on the surface. Our route opens a new avenue to add versatility to electrochemical interfaces in the field of paper-based electrochemical biosensors.

Synergistic Performance Boosts of Dopamine-Derived Carbon Shell Over Bi-metallic Sulfide: A Promising Advancement for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

A CoMoS composite is synthesized to combine the benefits of cobalt and molybdenum sulfides as an anodic material for advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The synthesis is accomplished using a simple two-step hydrothermal method and the resulting CoMoS nanocomposites are subsequently encapsulated in a carbonized polydopamine shell. The synthesis procedure exploited the self-polymerization ability of dopamine to create nitrogen-doped carbon-coated cobalt molybdenum sulfide, denoted as CoMoS@NC. Notably, the de-lithiation capacity of CoMoS and CoMoS@NC is 420 and 709 mAh g⁻1, respectively, even after 100 lithiation/de-lithiation cycles at a current density of 200 mA g⁻1. Furthermore, excellent capacity retention ability is observed for CoMoS@NC as it withstood 600 consecutive lithiation/de-lithiation cycles with 94% capacity retention. Moreover, a LIB full-cell assembly incorporating the CoMoS@NC anode and an NMC-532 cathode is subjected to comprehensive electrochemical and practical tests to evaluate the performance of the anode. In addition, the density functional theory showcases the increased lithium adsorption for CoMoS@NC, supporting the experimental findings. Hence, the use of dopamine as a nitrogen-doped carbon shell enhanced the performance of the CoMoS nanocomposites in experimental and theoretical tests, positioning the material as a strong candidate for LIB anode.

Amplified and Specific Staining of Protein Dimerization on Cell Membrane Catalyzed by Responsively Installed DNA Nanomachines for Cancer Diagnosis

In situ staining of protein dimerization on cell membrane has an important significance in accurate diagnosis during perioperative period, yet facile integration of specific recognition function and local signal conversion/amplification abilities on membrane surface remains a great challenge. Herein, a two-stage catalytic strategy is developed by installing DNA nanomachines and employing. Specifically, dual-aptamer-assisted DNA scaffold perform a "bispecific recognition-then-computing" operation and the output signal initiate a membrane-anchored biocatalysis for self-assembly of DNA catalytic converters, that is, G-quadruplex nanowire/hemin DNAzyme. Then, localized-deposition of chromogenic polydopamine is chemically catalyzed by horseradish peroxidase-mimicking DNAzyme and guided by supramolecular interactions between conjugate rigid plane of G-tetrad and polydopamine oligomer. The catalytic products exhibit nanofiber morphology with a diameter of 80-120 nm and a length of 1-10 µm, and one-to-one localize on DNA scaffold for amplified and specific staining of protein dimers. The bispecific staining leads to a higher (≈3.4-fold) signal intensity than traditional immunohistochemistry, which is beneficial for direct visualization. Moreover, an efficient discrimination ability of the bispecific staining strategy is observed in co-culture model staining. This study provides a novel catalytic method for controlling deposition of chromogens and paves a new avenue to sensitively stain of protein-protein interactions in disease diagnosis.

TiO2/PDA Multilayer Nanocomposites with Exceptionally Sharp Large-Scale Interfaces and Nitrogen Doping Gradient

The evolving field of photocatalysis requires the development of new functional materials, particularly those suitable for large-scale commercial systems. One particularly promising approach is the creation of hybrid organic/inorganic materials. Despite being extensively studied, materials such as polydopamine (PDA) and titanium oxide continue to show significant promise for use in such applications. Nitrogen-doped titanium oxide and free-standing PDA films obtained at the air/water interface are particularly interesting. This study introduces a straightforward and reproducible approach for synthesizing a novel class of large-scale multilayer nanocomposites. The method involves the alternate layering of high-quality materials at the air/water interface combined with precise atomic layer deposition techniques, resulting in a gradient nitrogen doping of titanium oxide layers with exceptionally sharp oxide/polymer interfaces. The analysis confirmed the presence of nitrogen in the interstitial and substitutional sites of the TiO2 lattice while maintaining the 2D-like structure of the PDA films. These chemical and structural characteristics translate into a reduction of the band gap by over 0.63 eV and an increase in the photogenerated current by over 60% compared with pure amorphous TiO2. Furthermore, the nanocomposites demonstrate excellent stability during the 1 h continuous photocurrent generation test.

The dual nature of biomimetic melanin

Melanin-inspired nanomaterials offer unique photophysical, electronic and radical scavenging properties that are widely explored for health and environmental preservation, or energy conversion and storage. The incorporation of functional melanin building blocks in more complex nanostructures or surfaces is typically achieved via a bottom-up approach starting from a molecular precursor, in most cases dopamine. Here we demonstrate that indeed, the oxidative polymerization of dopamine, for the synthesis of melanin-like polydopamine (PDA), leads to the simultaneous formation of more than one nanosized species with different compositions, morphologies and properties. In particular, a low-density polymeric structure and dense nanoparticles (NP) are simultaneously formed. The two populations could be separated and analyzed in real time using a chromatographic technique free of any stationary phase (flow field fractionation, FFF). The results following the synthesis of melanin-like PDA showed that the NP are formed only during the first 6 hours as a result of a supramolecular self-assembly-driven polymerization, while the formation of the polymer continues for about 36 hours. The two populations were also separated and characterized using TEM, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence and light scattering spectroscopy, DLS, FTIR, ζ-potential measurements, gel electrophoresis and pH titrations. Interestingly, very different properties between the two populations were observed: in particular the polymer contains a higher number of catechol units (8 mmol g-1 -OH) with respect to the NP (1 mmol g-1 -OH) and presents a much higher antioxidant activity. The attenuation of light by NP is more efficient than that by the polymer especially in the Vis-NIR region. Moreover, while the NP scatter light with an efficiency up to 27% they are not fluorescent, and the polymer does not scatter light but shows an excitation wavelength-dependent fluorescence typical of multi-fluorophoric uncoupled systems.

Laser-Induced Graphitization of Polydopamine on Titania Nanotubes

Since the discovery of laser-induced graphite/graphene, there has been a notable surge of scientific interest in advancing diverse methodologies for their synthesis and applications. This study focuses on the utilization of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser to achieve graphitization of polydopamine (PDA) deposited on the surface of titania nanotubes. The partial graphitization is corroborated through Raman and XPS spectroscopies and supported by water contact angle, nanomechanical, and electrochemical measurements. Reactive molecular dynamics simulations confirm the possibility of graphitization in the nanosecond time scale with the evolution of NH3, H2O, and CO2 gases. A thorough exploration of the lasing parameter space (wavelength, pulse energy, and number of pulses) was conducted with the aim of improving either electrochemical activity or photocurrent generation. Whereas the 532 nm laser pulses interacted mostly with the PDA coating, the 365 nm pulses were absorbed by both PDA and the substrate nanotubes, leading to a higher graphitization degree. The majority of the photocurrent and quantum efficiency enhancement is observed in the visible light between 400 and 550 nm. The proposed composite is applied as a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor of serotonin in nanomolar concentrations. Because of the suppressed recombination and facilitated charge transfer caused by the laser graphitization, the proposed composite exhibits significantly enhanced PEC performance. In the sensing application, it showed superior sensitivity and a limit of detection competitive with nonprecious metal materials.

Recent advances in 3D printable conductive hydrogel inks for neural engineering

Recently, the 3D printing of conductive hydrogels has undergone remarkable advances in the fabrication of complex and functional structures. In the field of neural engineering, an increasing number of reports have been published on tissue engineering and bioelectronic approaches over the last few years. The convergence of 3D printing methods and electrically conducting hydrogels may create new clinical and therapeutic possibilities for precision regenerative medicine and implants. In this review, we summarize (i) advancements in preparation strategies for conductive materials, (ii) various printing techniques enabling the fabrication of electroconductive hydrogels, (iii) the required physicochemical properties of the printed constructs, (iv) their applications in bioelectronics and tissue regeneration for neural engineering, and (v) unconventional approaches and outlooks for the 3D printing of conductive hydrogels. This review provides technical insights into 3D printable conductive hydrogels and encompasses recent developments, specifically over the last few years of research in the neural engineering field.

Engineering of Adhesion at Metal-Poly(lactic acid) Interfaces by Poly(dopamine): The Effect of the Annealing Temperature

Control over adhesion at interfaces from strong bonding to release between thermoplastic polymers (TPs) and metal oxides is highly significant for polymer composites. In this work, we showcase a simple and inexpensive method to tune adhesion between a TP of growing interest, poly(lactic acid) (PLA), and two commercial metal alloys, based on titanium and stainless steel. This is realized by coating titanium and stainless steel wires with polydopamine (PDA), thermally treating them under vacuum at temperatures ranging from 25 to 250 °C, and then comolding them with PLA to form pullout specimens for adhesion tests. Pullout results indicate that PDA coatings treated at low temperatures up to a given threshold significantly improve adhesion between PLA and the metals. Conversely, at higher PDA annealing temperatures beyond the threshold, interfacial bonding gradually declines. The excellent control over interfacial adhesion is attributed to the thermally induced transformation of PDA. In this work, we show using thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and ¹³C solid-state NMR that the extent of the thermal transformation is dependent on the annealing temperature. By selecting the annealing temperature, we vary the concentration of primary amine and hydroxyl groups in PDA, which influences adhesion at the metal/PLA interface. We believe that these findings contribute to optimizing and broadening the applications of PDA in composite materials.

Site-specific fabrication of a melanin-like pigment through spatially confined progressive assembly on an initiator-loaded template

Melanin-like nanomaterials have emerged in surface biofunctionalization in a material-independent manner due to their versatile adhesion arising from their catechol-rich structures. However, the unique adhesive properties of these materials ironically raise difficulties in their site-specific fabrication. Here, we report a method for site-specific fabrication and patterning of melanin-like pigments, using progressive assembly on an initiator-loaded template (PAINT), different from conventional lithographical methods. In this method, the local progressive assembly could be naturally induced on the given surface pretreated with initiators mediating oxidation of the catecholic precursor, as the intermediates generated from the precursors during the progressive assembly possess sufficient intrinsic underwater adhesion for localization without diffusion into solution. The pigment fabricated by PAINT showed efficient NIR-to-heat conversion properties, which can be useful in biomedical applications such as the disinfection of medical devices and cancer therapies.

The Convenience of Polydopamine in Designing SERS Biosensors with a Sustainable Prospect for Medical Application

Polydopamine (PDA) is a multifunctional biomimetic material that is friendly to biological organisms and the environment, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors have the potential to be reused. Inspired by these two factors, this review summarizes examples of PDA-modified materials at the micron or nanoscale to provide suggestions for designing intelligent and sustainable SERS biosensors that can quickly and accurately monitor disease progression. Undoubtedly, PDA is a kind of double-sided adhesive, introducing various desired metals, Raman signal molecules, recognition components, and diverse sensing platforms to enhance the sensitivity, specificity, repeatability, and practicality of SERS sensors. Particularly, core-shell and chain-like structures could be constructed by PDA facilely, and then combined with microfluidic chips, microarrays, and lateral flow assays to provide excellent references. In addition, PDA membranes with special patterns, and hydrophobic and strong mechanical properties can be used as independent platforms to carry SERS substances. As an organic semiconductor material capable of facilitating charge transfer, PDA may possess the potential for chemical enhancement in SERS. In-depth research on the properties of PDA will be helpful for the development of multi-mode sensing and the integration of diagnosis and treatment.

Magnetic, self-heating and superhydrophobic sponge for solar-driven high-viscosity oil-water separation

In this work, a novel oil-adsorption sponge with superhydrophobicity was fabricated using polymer-assisted electroless deposition and dip-coating techniques for depositing a rough polydopamine layer, magnetic particles, and low surface energy polydimethylsiloxane onto the surface of a sponge skeleton. The as-prepared superhydrophobic sponge (WCA > 150° and SA < 5°) exhibited rapid adsorption behavior, large adsorption capacity (up to 50.6 times its own dry weight or above 90% of its own volume), excellent durability (above 80% of the adsorption capacity after 80 recycles), and a self-cleaning property owing to sufficient open-cell pores and superelasticity provided by the melamine-formaldehyde host as well as the hierarchical roughness and convenient magnetic recovery enabled by the polymer-assisted electroless deposition approach. The pump-, gravity-, and solar-driven oil-water separation devices based on the fabricated cubic composites were also demonstrated, particularly the separation of high-viscosity oil-water mixtures via the solar-driven mode, demonstrating the broad prospects of such modified sponges in actual applications. This study provides a new avenue for rationally designing novel oil adsorption and separation materials.

Reversible Supramolecular Noncovalent Self-Assembly Determines the Optical Properties and the Formation of Melanin-like Nanoparticles

The role of noncovalent supramolecular self-assembly in the formation of melanin-like NP, as well as the nature of the electronic transition at the basis of their unique optical properties, is strongly debated. Here we demonstrate that, during the first stage of formation of synthetic melanin, polydopamine (PDA), a small fraction of the molecular precursor dopamine (DA) is oxidized to quinone (Q) and a simple supramolecular charge-transfer (CT) adduct is formed thanks to the electron donor and electron acceptor properties of DA and Q, respectively. This adduct, also detectable by HPLC-MS, presents the broad absorption band in the red-NIR region typical of melanin-like materials. Importantly, its disaggregation upon dilution can be easily detected since it leads to the disappearance of the CT band, indicating the reversibility of the process. Moreover, the stability constant K of the CT adduct could be obtained using a simple association model.

Surface Coating with Naphthalene Trisulfonate/Hafnium(IV) Complexes: Versatility and Post-Functionalization

Naphthalene trisulfonate is found to have versatile surface coating capability when combined with hafnium(IV) ions, thereby forming complexes. Solid substrates such as titanium/titanium dioxide, glass, and nylon immersed in a solution of naphthalene trisulfonate and Hf^IV produces naphthalene trisulfonate/Hf^IV complex coating. The coating is not produced when the Hf^IV ions are absent or when naphthalene monosulfonate replaces naphthalene trisulfonate; this indicates the significance of Hf^IV ions and multiple sulfonates in this coating system. The versatile surface coating property of naphthalene trisulfonate/Hf^IV complexes is attributed to the coexistence of hydrophobic aromatic and hydrophilic side groups in naphthalene trisulfonate. Additionally, Hf^IV ion-mediated cross-linking reactions between naphthalene trisulfonate molecules induce molecular assembly, facilitating versatile surface coating. Post-functionalization of the coating is accomplished through additional Hf^IV-mediated coordinate bond formation; alginate and λ-carrageenan are successfully grafted onto the coating for nonbiofouling applications.

Fiber-based photothermal, UV-resistant, and self-cleaning coatings fabricated by silicon grafted copolymers of chitosan derivatives and gallic acid

Superhydrophobic and hydrophobic properties are generally created by adopting low surface free energy materials. Therefore, most studies have focused on creating surface hydrophobicity by using hydrophobic or fluorinated materials. However, few studies are reported on realizing surface hydrophobicity by directly introducing hydrophilic molecules, which is also a challenge. Herein, with platinum nanozyme as the catalyst, the novel hydrophobic coatings have been rapidly gained via anchoring the polymer of hydrophilic gallic acid and chitosan or chitosan quaternary ammonium salt onto cotton fabric surface. Notably, the novel hydrophobic coatings exhibit significant advances compared with conventional hydrophobic ones created by utilizing fluorinated or hydrophobic materials, which breaks the limitation of employing low surface energy materials for gaining surface hydrophobicity. Subsequently, the sodium methyl silicate was grafted on the polymer's coatings to strengthen surface hydrophobicity and the abrasion resistance of hydrophobicity. Interestingly, the heating could induce the hydrophilicity of cotton fabric to recover to hydrophobicity. Moreover, the hydrophobic coatings also possess good photothermal conversion, UV resistance, and anti-oxidation activity for self-cleaning application and oil water separation. Briefly, the present work may open a new direction for preparing novel hydrophobic coatings by combining gallic acid and chitosan-based macromolecular carbohydrates.

Melanin Nanoparticle-Actuated Redox-State Perturbation and Temporally Photoactivated Thermal Stress for Synergistic Tumor Therapy

The elevation of antioxidant defense systems by adaptation response to localized reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation may confer resistance to excessive oxidative stress and cause therapeutic lethality. Herein, a highly effective tumor therapy is developed through perturbation in cellular redox homeostasis. Specifically, metal-ion-assisted oxidation polymerization of the melanin precursor (l-DOPA) whose carboxyl groups exert a charge-shielding effect leads to the formation of catechol-rich but quinone-deficient nanoparticles (NPs). These NPs possess appreciable ROS-scavenging ability, and particularly the raised quinone group levels in oxidized products can then trigger subsequent depletion of antioxidative species (GSH) and, in turn, the redox-cycle consumption of catechol/quinone groups. After incubating with cells, varying degrees of redox-state and energy metabolism fluctuations with time (∼6 h) are observed, where ROS/GSH levels rebound to a maximum peak (up to ∼280%) higher than the normal redox state after hitting the bottom within a short time (1 h). Notably, systematically triggered redox stress response can sensitize cells to an extremely endangered metastable state. The synergy of temporally photoactivated thermal stress can produce overwhelming oxidative stress, thus leading to significant inhibition of cancer cells. This work established a new paradigm of redox perturbator-based programed and combined cancer therapy.

Effect of N-Methylation on Dopamine Surface Chemistry

Dopamine (DA) surface chemistry has received significant attention because of its applicability in a wide range of research fields and the ability to graft functional molecules onto numerous solid surfaces. Various DA derivatives have been newly synthesized to identify key factors affecting the coating efficiency and to advance the coating system development. The oxidation of catechol into quinone followed by internal cyclization via the nucleophilic attack of primary amine is crucial for DA-based surface coating. Thus, it is expected that the amine group's nucleophilicity control directly affects the coating efficiency. However, it has not been systematically investigated, and most studies have been conducted with the focus on the transformation of amines into amides, despite such approaches decreasing the coating efficiency; the nitrogen in amides is less nucleophilic than that in free amines. In this study, we investigated the effect of N-alkylation on dopamine surface chemistry. N,N-Dimethyldopamine (DMDA) was newly synthesized, and the coating efficiency was systematically compared with DA and N-methyldopamine (MDA). DA N-monomethylation improved the coating rate by increasing the nitrogen nucleophilicity, whereas N,N-dimethylation dramatically decreased the DA surface coating property. In addition, MDA remained capable of universal surface coating and secondary reactions using the surface catechols. This study provides opportunities for developing coating materials with advanced functions and an improved coating rate.

Multi-nanocavities and multi-defects synergetic enhancement for the electromagnetic absorption of the rGO-NG film

Dielectric loss is an important way to eliminate electromagnetic pollution. In order to achieve high dielectric loss, a graphene film reduced graphene oxide-N doped graphene (rGO-NG) was constructed from graphene oxide-Ni@polydopamine (GO-Ni@PDA) via thein situsynthesis of hollow graphene spheres between graphene sheets. Thisin situwas achieved by means of electrostatic self-assembly and metal-catalyzed crystallization. Owing to the synergetic effect of multi-nanocavities and multi-defects, the prepared rGO-NG film shows an average shielding effectiveness (SE) of 50.0 dB in the range of 8.2-12.4 GHz with a thickness of 12.2μm, and the SE reflection is only 7.3 dB on average. It also exhibits an average dielectric loss tangent (tanδ) of 23.1, which is 26 and 105 times higher than those of rGO and rGO-Ni, respectively. This work provides a simple but effective route to develop high performance graphene-based materials for application as an electromagnetic interference shielding film in today's electronic devices.

Versatile polyphenolic platforms in regulating cell biology

Polyphenolic materials are a class of fascinating and versatile bioinspired materials for biointerfacial engineering. In particular, due to the presence of active chemical groups, a series of unique physicochemical properties become accessible and tunable of the as-prepared polyphenolic platforms, which could delicately regulate the cell activities via cell-material contact-dependent interactions. More interestingly, polyphenols could also affect the cell behaviors via cell-material contact-independent manner, which arise due to their intrinsically functional characteristics (e.g., antioxidant and photothermal behaviors). As such, a comprehensive understanding on the relationship between material properties and desired biomedical applications, as well as the underlying mechanism at the cellular and molecular level would provide material design principles and accelerate the lab-to-clinic translation of polyphenolic platforms. In this review, we firstly give a brief overview of cell hallmarks governed by surrounding cues, followed by the introduction of polyphenolic material engineering strategies. Subsequently, a detailed discussion on cell-polyphenols contact-dependent interfacial interaction and contact-independent interaction was also carefully provided. Lastly, their biomedical applications were elaborated. We believe that this review could provide guidances for the rational material design of multifunctional polyphenols and extend their application window.

Programmable Sensitivity Screening of Strain Sensors by Local Electrical and Mechanical Properties Coupling

Owing to the canonical trade-off between the gauge factor and the working range, there is an emergent need for strain sensors with customizable sensitivity for various applications of different deformation ranges. However, current optimization strategies typically allow possessing either, not both, high-sensing performance or customizable sensing performance. Here, a laser-programmed heterogeneous strain sensor featured locally coupled electrical and mechanical properties (named an LCoup sensor) is developed to access customized sensor performance. Coupled electromechanical properties enable the applied strain to be mainly experienced by the higher sensitivity regions when stretched. By optimizing the parameters of laser processes, the gauge factor can systematically screen within 2 orders of magnitude (from 7.8 to 266.6) while maintaining good stretchability (50%). To prove the potential in human-machine interaction, the real-time monitoring and recognition of set hand gestures (left-click, right-click, and double-click) are demonstrated, representing the traditional input patterns of the computer mouse. Multiscale programming of material properties can further achieve excellent and tailored device performances, offering more opportunities for the design of a broad range of flexible electronics.

The Photophysics and Photochemistry of Melanin- Like Nanomaterials Depend on Morphology and Structure

Melanin-like nanomaterials have found application in a large variety of high economic and social impact fields as medicine, energy conversion and storage, photothermal catalysis and environmental remediation. These materials have been used mostly for their optical and electronic properties, but also for their high biocompatibility and simplicity and versatility of preparation. Beside this, their chemistry is complex and it yields structures with different molecular weight and composition ranging from oligomers, to polymers as well as nanoparticles (NP). The comprehension of the correlation of the different compositions and morphologies to the optical properties of melanin is still incomplete and challenging, even if it is fundamental also from a technological point of view. In this minireview we focus on scientific papers, mostly recent ones, that indeed examine the link between composition and structural feature and photophysical and photochemical properties proposing this approach as a general one for future research.

Polydopamine Films with 2D-like Layered Structure and High Mechanical Resilience

Highly oriented, layered, and mechanically resilient films of polydopamine (PDA) have been synthesized from the air/water interface. The films show a unique layered structure, as shown by scanning and transmission electron studies (SEM/TEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), which resemble that of 2D layered materials. The films exhibit a composition typical of PDA-based materials, as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS); moreover, the samples present the distinctive resonance modes of PDA-based nanomaterials in Raman and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) experiments. The presence of highly ordinated 3-4 protomolecule stacking, taking place at the air/water interface, with a unique eumelanin-like supramolecular arrangement is presented. Moreover, the films show superior mechanical resilience with E = 13 ± 4 GPa and H = 0.21 ± 0.03 GPa, as revealed by nanoindentation experiments, making them highly resilient and easily transferable. Finally, the ordering induced by the interface opens many possibilities for further studies, including those regarding the supramolecular structure on PDA due to their similarity to 2D layered materials.

Bio-Applications of Multifunctional Melanin Nanoparticles: From Nanomedicine to Nanocosmetics

Bioinspired nanomaterials are ideal components for nanomedicine, by virtue of their expected biocompatibility or even complete lack of toxicity. Natural and artificial melanin-based nanoparticles (MNP), including polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NP), excel for their extraordinary combination of additional optical, electronic, chemical, photophysical, and photochemical properties. Thanks to these features, melanin plays an important multifunctional role in the design of new platforms for nanomedicine where this material works not only as a mechanical support or scaffold, but as an active component for imaging, even multimodal, and simple or synergistic therapy. The number of examples of bio-applications of MNP increased dramatically in the last decade. Here, we review the most recent ones, focusing on the multiplicity of functions that melanin performs in theranostics platforms with increasing complexity. For the sake of clarity, we start analyzing briefly the main properties of melanin and its derivative as well as main natural sources and synthetic methods, moving to imaging application from mono-modal (fluorescence, photoacoustic, and magnetic resonance) to multi-modal, and then to mono-therapy (drug delivery, anti-oxidant, photothermal, and photodynamic), and finally to theranostics and synergistic therapies, including gene- and immuno- in combination to photothermal and photodynamic. Nanomedicine aims not only at the treatment of diseases, but also to their prevention, and melanin in nature performs a protective action, in the form of nanopigment, against UV-Vis radiations and oxidants. With these functions being at the border between nanomedicine and cosmetics nanotechnology, recently examples of applications of artificial MNP in cosmetics are increasing, paving the road to the birth of the new science of nanocosmetics. In the last part of this review, we summarize and discuss these important recent results that establish evidence of the interconnection between nanomedicine and cosmetics nanotechnology.
