Improving the Biocompatibility and Functionality of Neural Interface Devices with Silica Nanoparticles

ConspectusNeural interface technologies enable bidirectional communication between the nervous system and external instrumentation. Advancements in neural interface devices not only open new frontiers for neuroscience research, but also hold great promise for clinical diagnosis, therapy, and rehabilitation for various neurological disorders. However, the performance of current neural electrode devices, often termed neural probes, is far from satisfactory. Glial scarring, neuronal degeneration, and electrode degradation eventually cause the devices to lose their connection with the brain. To improve the chronic performance of neural probes, efforts need to be made on two fronts: enhancing the physiochemical properties of the electrode materials and mitigating the undesired host tissue response.In this Account, we discuss our efforts in developing silica-nanoparticle-based (SiNP) coatings aimed at enhancing neural probe electrochemical properties and promoting device-tissue integration. Our work focuses on three approaches:(1) SiNPs' surface texturization to enhance biomimetic protein coatings for promoting neural integration. Through covalent immobilization, SiNP introduces biologically relevant nanotopography to neural probe surfaces, enhancing neuronal cell attachments and inhibiting microglia. The SiNP base coating further increases the binding density and stability of bioactive molecules such as L1CAM and facilitates the widespread dissemination of biomimetic coatings. (2) Doping SiNPs into conductive polymer electrode coatings improves the electrochemical properties and stability. As neural interface devices are moving to subcellular sizes to escape the immune response and high electrode site density to increase spatial resolution, the electrode sites need to be very small. The smaller electrode size comes at the cost of a high electrode impedance, elevated thermal noise, and insufficient charge injection capacity. Electrochemically deposited conductive polymer films reduce electrode impedance but do not endure prolonged electrical cycling. When incorporated into conductive polymer coatings as a dopant, the SiNP provides structural support for the polymer thin films, significantly increasing their stability and durability. Low interfacial impedance maintained by the conducting polymer/SiNP composite is critical for extended electrode longevity and effective charge injection in chronic neural stimulation applications. (3) Porous nanoparticles are used as drug carriers in conductive polymer coatings for local drug/neurochemical delivery. When triggered by external electrical stimuli, drug molecules and neurochemicals can be released in a controlled manner. Such precise focal manipulation of cellular and vascular behavior enables us to probe brain circuitry and develop therapeutic applications.We foresee tremendous opportunities for further advancing the functionality of SiNP coatings by incorporating new nanoscale components and integrating the coating with other design strategies. With an enriched nanoscale toolbox and optimized design strategies, we can create customizable multifunctional and multimodal neural interfaces that can operate at multiple spatial levels and seamlessly integrate with the host tissue for extended applications.

Phase-separating resins for light-based three-dimensional printing of oxide glasses

Silica-based glasses can be shaped into complex geometries using a variety of additive manufacturing technologies. While the three-dimensional printing of glasses opens unprecedented design opportunities, the development of up-scaled, reliable manufacturing processes is crucial for the broader dissemination of this technology. Here, we design and study phase-separating resins that enable light-based 3D printing of oxide glasses with high-aspect-ratio features and enhanced manufacturing yields. The effect of the resin composition on the microstructure, mechanical properties and delamination resistance of parts printed by digital light processing is investigated with the help of printing experiments, compression tests and electron microscopy analysis. The chemical composition and microstructure of the cured resins were found to strongly affect the stiffness, delamination resistance, and calcination behavior of printed parts. These findings provide useful guidelines to enhance the reliability and yield of the DLP printing process of multicomponent silica-based glasses.

Femtosecond laser writing of robust waveguides in optical fibers with enhanced photosensitivity

We report the femtosecond laser writing of meter-long optical waveguides inscribed through the coating of specifically designed optical fibers. In order to improve the material photosensitivity and to ensure non-guiding optical fibers for subsequent laser processing of the waveguiding core, a depressed refractive index core design is implemented by co-doping a large portion of the optical fiber with germanium oxide and fluorine. The enhanced photosensitivity provided by further deuterium loading these fibers allows laser-writing of large refractive index contrast waveguides over wide cross sections. To mitigate the formation of photoinduced color centers causing high propagation losses in the photo-written waveguides, thermal annealing up to 400°C is performed on polyimide-coated laser-written fibers. Although the refractive index contrast decreases, the propagation losses are drastically reduced down to 0.08 dB/cm at 900nm allowing a robust single-mode guiding from visible to near infrared. Our results pave the way towards the development of a new generation of optical fibers and photonic components with arbitrarily complex designs.

3D Printing of Glass Micro-Optics with Subwavelength Features on Optical Fiber Tips

Integration of functional materials and structures on the tips of optical fibers has enabled various applications in micro-optics, such as sensing, imaging, and optical trapping. Direct laser writing is a 3D printing technology that holds promise for fabricating advanced micro-optical structures on fiber tips. To date, material selection has been limited to organic polymer-based photoresists because existing methods for 3D direct laser writing of inorganic materials involve high-temperature processing that is not compatible with optical fibers. However, organic polymers do not feature stability and transparency comparable to those of inorganic glasses. Herein, we demonstrate 3D direct laser writing of inorganic glass with a subwavelength resolution on optical fiber tips. We show two distinct printing modes that enable the printing of solid silica glass structures ("Uniform Mode") and self-organized subwavelength gratings ("Nanograting Mode"), respectively. We illustrate the utility of our approach by printing two functional devices: (1) a refractive index sensor that can measure the indices of binary mixtures of acetone and methanol at near-infrared wavelengths and (2) a compact polarization beam splitter for polarization control and beam steering in an all-in-fiber system. By combining the superior material properties of glass with the plug-and-play nature of optical fibers, this approach enables promising applications in fields such as fiber sensing, optical microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and quantum photonics.

Coaxial 3D Printing of Zeolite-Based Core-Shell Monolithic Cu-SSZ-13@SiO2 Catalysts for Diesel Exhaust Treatment

Core-shell catalysts with functional shells can increase the activity and stability of the catalysts in selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammoniax. However, the conventional approaches based on multistep fabrication for core-shell structures encounter persistent restrictions regarding strict synthesis conditions and limited design flexibility. Herein, a facile coaxial 3D printing strategy is for the first time developed to construct zeolite-based core-shell monolithic catalysts with interconnected honeycomb structures, in which the hydrophilic noncompact silica serves as shell and Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite acts as core. Compared to a Cu-SSZ-13 monolith which suffers from the interfacial diffusion, the SiO2 shell layer can increase the accessibility of active sites over Cu-SSZ-13@SiO2, resulting in a 10-20% higher NO conversion at200-550 °C under 300 000 cm3 g-1 h-1. Meanwhile, a thicker SiO2 shell enhances the hydrothermal stability of the aged catalyst by inhibiting the dealumination and the formation of CuOx. Other representative monolithic catalysts with different topological zeolites as shell and diverse metal oxides as the core can be also realized by this coaxial 3D printing. This strategy allows multiple porous materials to be directly integrated, which allows for flexible design and fabrication of various core-shell monolithic catalysts with customized functionalities.

Metal element-based adsorbents for phosphorus capture: Chaperone effect, performance and mechanism

Excessive phosphorus (P) enters the water bodies via wastewater discharges or agricultural runoff, triggering serious environmental problems such as eutrophication. In contrast, P as an irreplaceable key resource, presents notable supply-demand contradictions due to ineffective recovery mechanisms. Hence, constructing a system that simultaneously reduce P contaminants and effective recycling has profound theoretical and practical implications. Metal element-based adsorbents, including metal (hydro) oxides, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), exhibit a significant chaperone effect stemming from strong orbital hybridization between their intrinsic Lewis acid sites and P (Lewis base). This review aims to parse the structure-effect relationship between metal element-based adsorbents and P, and explores how to optimize the P removal properties. Special emphasis is given to the formation of the metal-P chemical bond, which not only depends on the type of metal in the adsorbent but also closely relates to its surface activity and pore structure. Then, we delve into the intrinsic mechanisms behind these adsorbents' remarkable adsorption capacity and precise targeting. Finally, we offer an insightful discussion of the prospects and challenges of metal element-based adsorbents in terms of precise material control, large-scale production, P-directed adsorption and effective utilization.

Advanced Nanomaterials in Medical 3D Printing

3D printing is now recognized as a significant tool for medical research and clinical practice, leading to the emergence of medical 3D printing technology. It is essential to improve the properties of 3D-printed products to meet the demand for medical use. The core of generating qualified 3D printing products is to develop advanced materials and processes. Taking advantage of nanomaterials with tunable and distinct physical, chemical, and biological properties, integrating nanotechnology into 3D printing creates new opportunities for advancing medical 3D printing field. Recently, some attempts are made to improve medical 3D printing through nanotechnology, providing new insights into developing advanced medical 3D printing technology. With high-resolution 3D printing technology, nano-structures can be directly fabricated for medical applications. Incorporating nanomaterials into the 3D printing material system can improve the properties of the 3D-printed medical products. At the same time, nanomaterials can be used to expand novel medical 3D printing technologies. This review introduced the strategies and progresses of improving medical 3D printing through nanotechnology and discussed challenges in clinical translation.

Fast and Facile Liquid Metal Printing via Projection Lithography for Highly Stretchable Electronic Circuits

Soft electronic circuits are crucial for wearable electronics, biomedical technologies, and soft robotics, requiring soft conductive materials with high conductivity, high strain limit, and stable electrical performance under deformation. Liquid metals (LMs) have become attractive candidates with high conductivity and fluidic compliance, while effective manufacturing methods are demanded. Digital light processing (DLP)-based projection lithography is a high-resolution and high-throughput printing technique for primarily polymers and some metals. If LMs can be printed with DLP as well, the entire soft devices can be fabricated by one printer in a streamlined and highly efficient process. Herein, fast and facile DLP-based LM printing is achieved. Simply with 5-10 s of patterned ultraviolet (UV)-light exposure, a highly conductive and stretchable pattern can be printed using a photo-crosslinkable LM particle ink. The printed eutectic gallium indium traces feature high resolution (≈20 µm), conductivity (3 × 106 S m-1 ), stretchability (≈2500%), and excellent stability (consistent performance at different deformation). Various patterns are printed in diverse material systems for broad applications including stretchable displays, epidermal strain sensors, heaters, humidity sensors, conformal electrodes for electrography, and multi-layer actuators. The facile and scalable process, excellent performance, and diverse applications ensure its broad impact on soft electronic manufacturing.

3D microprinting of inorganic porous materials by chemical linking-induced solidification of nanocrystals

Three-dimensional (3D) microprinting is considered a next-generation manufacturing process for the production of microscale components; however, the narrow range of suitable materials, which include mainly polymers, is a critical issue that limits the application of this process to functional inorganic materials. Herein, we develop a generalised microscale 3D printing method for the production of purely inorganic nanocrystal-based porous materials. Our process is designed to solidify all-inorganic nanocrystals via immediate dispersibility control and surface linking-induced interconnection in the nonsolvent linker bath and thereby creates multibranched gel networks. The process works with various inorganic materials, including metals, semiconductors, magnets, oxides, and multi-materials, not requiring organic binders or stereolithographic equipment. Filaments with a diameter of sub-10 μm are printed into designed complex 3D microarchitectures, which exhibit full nanocrystal functionality and high specific surface areas as well as hierarchical porous structures. This approach provides the platform technology for designing functional inorganics-based porous materials.

Additive Manufacturing of Transparent Multi-Component Nanoporous Glasses

Fabrication of glass with complex geocd the low resolution of particle-based or fused glass technologies. Herein, a high-resolution 3D printing of transparent nanoporous glass is presented, by the combination of transparent photo-curable sol-gel printing compositions and digital light processing (DLP) technology. Multi-component glass, including binary (Al2 O3 -SiO2 ), ternary (ZnO-Al2 O3 -SiO2 , TiO2 -Al2 O3 -SiO2 ), and quaternary oxide (CaO-P2 O5 -Al2 O3 -SiO2 ) nanoporous glass objects with complex shapes, high spatial resolutions, and multi-oxide chemical compositions are fabricated, by DLP printing and subsequent sintering process. The uniform nanopores of Al2 O3 -SiO2 -based nanoporous glasses with the diameter (≈6.04 nm), which is much smaller than the visible light wavelength, result in high transmittance (>95%) at the visible range. The high surface area of printed glass objectives allows post-functionalization via the adsorption of functional guest molecules. The photoluminescence and hydrophobic modification of 3D printed glass objectives are successfully demonstrated. This work extends the scope of 3D printing to transparent nanoporous glasses with complex geometry and facile functionalization, making them available for a wide range of applications.

Room-Temperature Molding of Complex-Shaped Transparent Fused Silica Lenses

The high hardness, brittleness, and thermal resistance impose significant challenges in the scalable manufacturing of fused silica lenses, which are widely used in numerous applications. Taking advantage of the nanocomposites by stirring silica nanopowders with photocurable resins, the newly emerged low-temperature pre-shaping technique provides a paradigm shift in fabricating transparent fused silica components. However, preparing the silica slurry and carefully evaporating the organics may significantly increase the process complexity and decrease the manufacturing efficiency for the nanocomposite-based technique. By directly pressing pure silica nanopowders against the complex-shaped metal molds in minutes, this work reports an entirely different room-temperature molding method capable of mass replication of complex-shaped silica lenses without organic additives. After sintering the replicated lenses, fully transparent fused silica lenses with spherical, arrayed, and freeform patterns are generated with nanometric surface roughness and well-reserved mold shapes, demonstrating a scalable and cost-effective route surpassing the current techniques for the manufacturing of high-quality fused silica lenses.

Site-directed placement of three-dimensional DNA origami

The combination of lithographic methods with two-dimensional DNA origami self-assembly has led, among others, to the development of photonic crystal cavity arrays and the exploration of sensing nanoarrays where molecular devices are patterned on the sub-micrometre scale. Here we extend this concept to the third dimension by mounting three-dimensional DNA origami onto nanopatterned substrates, followed by silicification to provide hybrid DNA-silica structures exhibiting mechanical and chemical stability and achieving feature sizes in the sub-10-nm regime. Our versatile and scalable method relying on self-assembly at ambient temperatures offers the potential to three-dimensionally position any inorganic and organic components compatible with DNA origami nanoarchitecture, demonstrated here with gold nanoparticles. This way of nanotexturing could provide a route for the low-cost production of complex and three-dimensionally patterned surfaces and integrated devices designed on the molecular level and reaching macroscopic dimensions.

Two-photon polymerization of silica glass diffractive micro-optics with minimal lateral shrinkage

Three-dimensional printing enables the fabrication of silica glass optics with complex structures. However, shrinkage remains a significant obstacle to high-precision 3D printing of glass optics. Here we 3D-printed Dammann gratings (DGs) with low lateral shrinkage (<4%) using a two-photon polymerization (2PP) technique. The process consists of two steps: patterning two-photon polymerizable glass slurry with a 515 nm femtosecond laser to form desired structures and debinding/sintering the structures into transparent and dense silica glass. The sintered structures exhibited distinct shrinkage rates in the lateral against longitudinal directions. As the aspect ratio of the structures increased, the lateral shrinkage decreased, while the longitudinal shrinkage increased. Specifically, the structure with an aspect ratio of approximately 60 achieved a minimal lateral shrinkage of 1.1%, the corresponding longitudinal shrinkage was 61.7%. The printed DGs with a surface roughness below 20 nm demonstrated good beam-shaping performance. The presented technique opens up possibilities for rapid prototyping of silica diffractive optical elements.

Untapped Potential of Deep Eutectic Solvents for the Synthesis of Bioinspired Inorganic-Organic Materials

Since the discovery of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in 2003, significant progress has been made in the field, specifically advancing aspects of their preparation and physicochemical characterization. Their low-cost and unique tailored properties are reasons for their growing importance as a sustainable medium for the resource-efficient processing and synthesis of advanced materials. In this paper, the significance of these designer solvents and their beneficial features, in particular with respect to biomimetic materials chemistry, is discussed. Finally, this article explores the unrealized potential and advantageous aspects of DESs, focusing on the development of biomineralization-inspired hybrid materials. It is anticipated that this article can stimulate new concepts and advances providing a reference for breaking down the multidisciplinary borders in the field of bioinspired materials chemistry, especially at the nexus of computation and experiment, and to develop a rigorous materials-by-design paradigm.

Low-temperature 3D printing of transparent silica glass microstructures

Transparent silica glass is one of the most essential materials used in society and industry, owing to its exceptional optical, thermal, and chemical properties. However, glass is extremely difficult to shape, especially into complex and miniaturized structures. Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) printing have allowed for the creation of glass structures, but these methods involve time-consuming and high-temperature processes. Here, we report a photochemistry-based strategy for making glass structures of micrometer size under mild conditions. Our technique uses a photocurable polydimethylsiloxane resin that is 3D printed into complex structures and converted to silica glass via deep ultraviolet (DUV) irradiation in an ozone environment. The unique DUV-ozone conversion process for silica microstructures is low temperature (~220°C) and fast (<5 hours). The printed silica glass is highly transparent with smooth surface, comparable to commercial fused silica glass. This work enables the creation of arbitrary structures in silica glass through photochemistry and opens opportunities in unexplored territories for glass processing techniques.

3D-Architected Alkaline-Earth Perovskites

3D ceramic architectures are captivating geometrical features with an immense demand in optics. In this work, an additive manufacturing (AM) approach for printing alkaline-earth perovskite 3D microarchitectures is developed. The approach enables custom-made photoresists suited for two-photon lithography, permitting the production of alkaline-earth perovskite (BaZrO3 , CaZrO3 , and SrZrO3 ) 3D structures shaped in the form of octet-truss lattices, gyroids, or inspired architectures like sodalite zeolite, and C60 buckyballs with micrometric and nanometric feature sizes. Alkaline-earth perovskite morphological, structural, and chemical characteristics are studied. The optical properties of such perovskite architectures are investigated using cathodoluminescence and wide-field photoluminescence emission to estimate the lifetime rate and defects in BaZrO3 , CaZrO3 , and SrZrO3 . From a broad perspective, this AM methodology facilitates the production of 3D-structured mixed oxides. These findings are the first steps toward dimensionally refined high-refractive-index ceramics for micro-optics and other terrains like (photo/electro)catalysis.

3D printing of inorganic nanomaterials by photochemically bonding colloidal nanocrystals

3D printing of inorganic materials with nanoscale resolution offers a different materials processing pathway to explore devices with emergent functionalities. However, existing technologies typically involve photocurable resins that reduce material purity and degrade properties. We develop a general strategy for laser direct printing of inorganic nanomaterials, as exemplified by more than 10 semiconductors, metal oxides, metals, and their mixtures. Colloidal nanocrystals are used as building blocks and photochemically bonded through their native ligands. Without resins, this bonding process produces arbitrary three-dimensional (3D) structures with a large inorganic mass fraction (~90%) and high mechanical strength. The printed materials preserve the intrinsic properties of constituent nanocrystals and create structure-dictated functionalities, such as the broadband chiroptical responses with an anisotropic factor of ~0.24 for semiconducting cadmium chalcogenide nanohelical arrays.

Transparent and Robust Superhydrophobic Structure on Silica Glass Processed with Microstereolithography Printing

Silica glass devices are widely used due to their exceptional physical and chemical properties. However, prolonged usage may result in abrasion and contamination of silica glass devices, adversely affecting the service life. One of the most effective solutions to this issue is surface modification, in which superhydrophobicity with high transmittance and mechanical robustness is highly desired. Inspired by the concept of protective armor, we proposed a novel approach for the direct integration of robust and transparent superhydrophobic structures on silica glass. In this method, microstereolithography synergistic heat treatment processes are used to create a micrometer-scale biomimetic frame on the surface of silica glass and then filled with in situ deposited nanoparticles. The superhydrophobicity of the surface can be obtained through the nanoparticles, and the biomimetic frame can protect the surface from direct contact with external objects to achieve durability. This process allows the preparation of superhydrophobic silica structures on the silica device surface at temperatures below its melting point, which prevents any damage to the devices during the heat treatment. Moreover, up to 90% transmittance does not affect the performance of silica devices. The composite structure maintains a contact angle of over 150° after multiple abrasion tests, verifying the mechanical robustness. This innovative process paves the way for forming a high mechanical robustness and excellent transmittance protective layer on silica glass devices, which expands the application field.

Crystalline silica particle functionalized by PEG for its collision-enhanced detection at ultramicroelectrode

Detecting individual particulate matter is highly significant in many areas, such as mine safety, environment, and human health. The analytical method based on single entity electrochemistry (SEE) has shown great potential in detecting, counting, and measuring individual particles, especially conductive metals or carbon particles, based on their unique charge transfer reactions at an ultramicroelectrode (UME). In this study, we report an innovative SEE method for improving the sensitivity of the detection of electrochemical inert crystalline silica particles by functionalizing silica particles with polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecules. The PEG surface functionalization of the silica was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The morphology of silica particles was characterized by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and a transmission electron microscope (TEM) was employed to calibrate size distribution and determine the elemental composition of silica particles. The surface charges of silica particles were measured by dynamic light scattering techniques. The collision behaviors of crystalline silica particles with UME were investigated by cyclic voltammetric experiments, which are rarely reported in the literature. The crystalline silica particles were detected based on electrochemically blocking the flux of the redox mediator at the surface of UME, which showed significant signal amplification in the proposed method. Our method was demonstrated for detecting crystalline silica functionalized with or without PEG, acquiring the limit of quantification (LOQ) values of 0.391 μM (23.45 μg/L) and 0.824 μM (49.45 μg/L), respectively, which confirmed that a more than two times improvement in LOQ could be achieved over the PEG functionalized silica particles. We further presented a theoretical model using finite element simulations with COMSOL Multiphysics. We deduced a quantitative relation between the distribution of the current step size and the size distribution of silica particles. Therefore, the reported method here provides a paradigm for SEE-based detection of electrochemically inert crystalline silica particles, which extends the previous report substantially concerning particle detection.

Three-dimensional printing of silica glass with sub-micrometer resolution

Silica glass is a high-performance material used in many applications such as lenses, glassware, and fibers. However, modern additive manufacturing of micro-scale silica glass structures requires sintering of 3D-printed silica-nanoparticle-loaded composites at ~1200 °C, which causes substantial structural shrinkage and limits the choice of substrate materials. Here, 3D printing of solid silica glass with sub-micrometer resolution is demonstrated without the need of a sintering step. This is achieved by locally crosslinking hydrogen silsesquioxane to silica glass using nonlinear absorption of sub-picosecond laser pulses. The as-printed glass is optically transparent but shows a high ratio of 4-membered silicon-oxygen rings and photoluminescence. Optional annealing at 900 °C makes the glass indistinguishable from fused silica. The utility of the approach is demonstrated by 3D printing an optical microtoroid resonator, a luminescence source, and a suspended plate on an optical-fiber tip. This approach enables promising applications in fields such as photonics, medicine, and quantum-optics.

A sinterless, low-temperature route to 3D print nanoscale optical-grade glass

Three-dimensional (3D) printing of silica glass is dominated by techniques that rely on traditional particle sintering. At the nanoscale, this limits their adoption within microsystem technology, which prevents technological breakthroughs. We introduce the sinterless, two-photon polymerization 3D printing of free-form fused silica nanostructures from a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) resin. Contrary to particle-loaded sacrificial binders, our POSS resin itself constitutes a continuous silicon-oxygen molecular network that forms transparent fused silica at only 650°C. This temperature is 500°C lower than the sintering temperatures for fusing discrete silica particles to a continuum, which brings silica 3D printing below the melting points of essential microsystem materials. Simultaneously, we achieve a fourfold resolution enhancement, which enables visible light nanophotonics. By demonstrating excellent optical quality, mechanical resilience, ease of processing, and coverable size scale, our material sets a benchmark for micro- and nano-3D printing of inorganic solids.

Additive Manufacturing of Bioactive Glass and Its Polymer Composites as Bone Tissue Engineering Scaffolds: A Review

Bioactive glass (BG) and its polymer composites have demonstrated great potential as scaffolds for bone defect healing. Nonetheless, processing these materials into complex geometry to achieve either anatomy-fitting designs or the desired degradation behavior remains challenging. Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the fabrication of BG and BG/polymer objects with well-defined shapes and intricate porous structures. This work reviewed the recent advancements made in the AM of BG and BG/polymer composite scaffolds intended for bone tissue engineering. A literature search was performed using the Scopus database to include publications relevant to this topic. The properties of BG based on different inorganic glass formers, as well as BG/polymer composites, are first introduced. Melt extrusion, direct ink writing, powder bed fusion, and vat photopolymerization are AM technologies that are compatible with BG or BG/polymer processing and were reviewed in terms of their recent advances. The value of AM in the fabrication of BG or BG/polymer composites lies in its ability to produce scaffolds with patient-specific designs and the on-demand spatial distribution of biomaterials, both contributing to effective bone defect healing, as demonstrated by in vivo studies. Based on the relationships among structure, physiochemical properties, and biological function, AM-fabricated BG or BG/polymer composite scaffolds are valuable for achieving safer and more efficient bone defect healing in the future.

Wide-Field and Real-Time Super-Resolution Optical Imaging By Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticle-Assembled Solid Immersion Lens

Super-resolution optical imaging techniques can break the optical diffraction limit, thus providing unique opportunities to visualize the microscopic world at the nanoscale. Although near-field optical microscopy techniques have been proven to achieve significantly improved imaging resolution, most near-field approaches still suffer from a narrow field of view (FOV) or difficulty in obtaining wide-field images in real time, which may limit their widespread and diverse applications. Here, the authors experimentally demonstrate an optical microscope magnification and image enhancement approach by using a submillimeter-sized solid immersion lens (SIL) assembled by densely-packed 15 nm TiO₂ nanoparticles through a silicone oil two-step dehydration method. This TiO₂ nanoparticle-assembled SIL can achieve both high transparency and high refractive index, as well as sufficient mechanical strength and easy-to-handle size, thus providing a fast, wide-field, real-time, non-destructive, and low-cost solution for improving the quality of optical microscopic observation of a variety of samples, including nanomaterials, cancer cells, and living cells or bacteria under conventional optical microscopes. This study provides an attractive alternative to simplify the fabrication and applications of high-performance SILs.

Synthesis and Characterization of Erbium-Doped Silica Films Obtained by an Acid-Base-Catalyzed Sol-Gel Process

Erbium-doped silica films were synthesized using a two-step sol-gel methodology that involved acid and base catalysts, with erbium concentration ranging from 0.2% to 6% and annealing temperatures varying from 500 °C to 900 °C. The photoluminescence spectra showed that the samples exhibiting efficient emission were annealed at 800 °C and 900 °C and doped with 3% and 6% erbium. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the internal structure of the films was influenced by the different annealing temperatures and the doping concentrations. Samples with dominant 4f transitions were modelled. The results suggest that the proposed method is a promising approach for the synthesis of erbium-doped silica films with potential applications in optical devices.

3D-Printed Micro/Nano-Scaled Mechanical Metamaterials: Fundamentals, Technologies, Progress, Applications, and Challenges

Micro/nano-scaled mechanical metamaterials have attracted extensive attention in various fields attributed to their superior properties benefiting from their rationally designed micro/nano-structures. As one of the most advanced technologies in the 21st century, additive manufacturing (3D printing) opens an easier and faster path for fabricating micro/nano-scaled mechanical metamaterials with complex structures. Here, the size effect of metamaterials at micro/nano scales is introduced first. Then, the additive manufacturing technologies to fabricate mechanical metamaterials at micro/nano scales are introduced. The latest research progress on micro/nano-scaled mechanical metamaterials is also reviewed according to the type of materials. In addition, the structural and functional applications of micro/nano-scaled mechanical metamaterials are further summarized. Finally, the challenges, including advanced 3D printing technologies, novel material development, and innovative structural design, for micro/nano-scaled mechanical metamaterials are discussed, and future perspectives are provided. The review aims to provide insight into the research and development of 3D-printed micro/nano-scaled mechanical metamaterials.

Printing on Particles: Combining Two-Photon Nanolithography and Capillary Assembly to Fabricate Multimaterial Microstructures

Additive manufacturing at the micro- and nanoscale has seen a recent upsurge to suit an increasing demand for more elaborate structures. However, the integration of multiple distinct materials at small scales remains challenging. To this end, capillarity-assisted particle assembly (CAPA) and two-photon polymerization direct laser writing (2PP-DLW) are combined to realize a new class of multimaterial microstructures. 2PP-DLW and CAPA both are used to fabricate 3D templates to guide the CAPA of soft- and hard colloids, and to link well-defined arrangements of functional microparticle arrays produced by CAPA, a process that is termed "printing on particles." The printing process uses automated particle recognition algorithms to connect colloids into 1D, 2D, and 3D tailored structures, via rigid, soft, or responsive polymer links. Once printed and developed, the structures can be easily re-dispersed in water. Particle clusters and lattices of varying symmetry and composition are reported, together with thermoresponsive microactuators, and magnetically driven "micromachines", which can efficiently move, capture, and release DNA-coated particles in solution. The flexibility of this method allows the combination of a wide range of functional materials into complex structures, which will boost the realization of new systems and devices for numerous fields, including microrobotics, micromanipulation, and metamaterials.

Entering a New Dimension in Powder Processing for Advanced Ceramics Shaping

Filigree structures can be manufactured via two-photon polymerization (2PP) operating in the regime of nonlinear light absorption. For the first time, it is possible to apply this technique to the powder processing of ceramic structures with a feature size in the range of the critical defect sizes responsible for brittle fracture and, thus, affecting fracture toughness of high-performance ceramics. In this way, tailoring of advanced properties can be achieved already in the shaping process. Traditionally, 2PP relies on transparent polymerizable resins, which are diametrically opposed to the usually completely opaque ceramic resins and slurries. Here a transparent and photocurable suspension of nanoparticles (resin) with very high mass fractions of yttria-stabilized zirconia particles (YSZ) is presented. Due to the extremely well-dispersed nanoparticles, scattering of light can be effectively suppressed at the process-relevant wavelength of 800 nm. Sintered ceramic structures with a resolution of down to 500 nm are obtained. Even at reduced densities of 1-4 g cm^-3 , the resulting compressive strength with 4.5 GPa is equivalent or even exceeding bulk monolithic yttria-stabilized zirconia. A ceramic metamaterial is born, where the mechanical properties of yttria-stabilized zirconia are altered by changing geometrical parameters, and gives access to a new class of ceramic materials.

Locally varying formation of nanoclusters across a low-intensity ultra-short laser spot

Ultra-short laser illumination is an intriguing tool for engineering material by light. It is usually employed at or above the ablation threshold. Practical applications profit from tailoring surface properties, for instance, by structural changes to the surface layer of an irradiated target. A target-orientated restructuring of surfaces on the nanoscale is much less explored. In particular, an intrinsic intensity variation across a laser spot has not yet been considered or employed. We image the unexpected nanoscale clusters formed on the Cu(111) surface upon illumination of a Cu sample far below its ablation threshold by femtosecond laser light, employing a specifically-developed multi-scale approach. We unravel that these clusters vary significantly in size and shape across the micrometer-scale 400 nm 50 fs laser spot (repetition rate: 250 kHz). There are three qualitatively different regions separated by sharp changes. The observations highlight the importance of local fluence for specific types of nanoclusters. Ultra-short laser illumination represents a non-trivial interplay between photo-thermal and electron-induced mechanisms, transport of heat and electrons, and material properties, which we discuss for identifying the underlying principles. Our study demonstrates that a multitude of as yet unconsidered processes are involved in the tailoring of nanoscale materials by ultra-short laser light.

Additive manufacturing of Zn with submicron resolution and its conversion into Zn/ZnO core-shell structures

Electrohydrodynamic redox 3D printing (EHD-RP) is an additive manufacturing (AM) technique with submicron resolution and multi-metal capabilities, offering the possibility to switch chemistry during deposition "on-the-fly". Despite the potential for synthesizing a large range of metals by electrochemical small-scale AM techniques, to date, only Cu and Ag have been reproducibly deposited by EHD-RP. Here, we extend the materials palette available to EHD-RP by using aqueous solvents instead of organic solvents, as used previously. We demonstrate deposition of Cu and Zn from sacrificial anodes immersed in acidic aqueous solvents. Mass spectrometry indicates that the choice of the solvent is important to the deposition of pure Zn. Additionally, we show that the deposited Zn structures, 250 nm in width, can be partially converted into semiconducting ZnO structures by oxidation at 325 °C in air.

Fabrication and Functionality Integration Technologies for Small-Scale Soft Robots

Small-scale soft robots are attracting increasing interest for visible and potential applications owing to their safety and tolerance resulting from their intrinsic soft bodies or compliant structures. However, it is not sufficient that the soft bodies merely provide support or system protection. More importantly, to meet the increasing demands of controllable operation and real-time feedback in unstructured/complicated scenarios, these robots are required to perform simplex and multimodal functionalities for sensing, communicating, and interacting with external environments during large or dynamic deformation with the risk of mismatch or delamination. Challenges are encountered during fabrication and integration, including the selection and fabrication of composite/materials and structures, integration of active/passive functional modules with robust interfaces, particularly with highly deformable soft/stretchable bodies. Here, methods and strategies of fabricating structural soft bodies and integrating them with functional modules for developing small-scale soft robots are investigated. Utilizing templating, 3D printing, transfer printing, and swelling, small-scale soft robots can be endowed with several perceptual capabilities corresponding to diverse stimulus, such as light, heat, magnetism, and force. The integration of sensing and functionalities effectively enhances the agility, adaptability, and universality of soft robots when applied in various fields, including smart manufacturing, medical surgery, biomimetics, and other interdisciplinary sciences.

Machine learning-based prediction and inverse design of 2D metamaterial structures with tunable deformation-dependent Poisson's ratio

With the aid of recent efficient and prior knowledge-free machine learning (ML) algorithms, extraordinary mechanical properties such as negative Poisson's ratio have extensively promoted the diverse designs of metamaterials with distinctive cellular structures. However, most existing ML approaches applied to the design of metamaterials are primarily based on a single property value with the assumption that the Poisson's ratio of a material is stationary, neglecting the dynamic variability of Poisson's ratio, termed deformation-dependent Poisson's ratio, during the loading process that a metamaterial other than conventional materials may experience. This paper first proposes a crystallographic symmetry-based methodology to build 2D metamaterials with complex but patterned topological structures, and then converts them into computational models suitable for molecular dynamics simulations. Then, we employ an integrated approach, consisting of molecular dynamics simulations capable of generating and collecting a large dataset for training/validation, in addition to ML algorithms (CNN and Cycle-GAN) able to predict the dynamic characteristics of Poisson's ratio and offer the inverse design of a metamaterial structure based on a target quasi-continuous Poisson's ratio-strain curve, to eventually unravel the underlying mechanism and design principles of 2D metamaterial structures with tunable Poisson's ratio. The close match between the predefined Poisson's ratio response and that from the generated structure validates the feasibility of the proposed ML model. Owing to the high efficiency and complete independence from prior knowledge, our proposed approach offers a novel and robust technique for the prediction and inverse design of metamaterial structures with tailored deformation-dependent Poisson's ratio, an unprecedented property attractive in flexible electronics, soft robotics, and nanodevices.

Construction of Photoresponsive 3D Structures Based on Triphenylethylene Photochromic Building Blocks

Photoresponsive materials have been widely used in sensing, bioimaging, molecular switches, information storage, and encryption nowadays. Although a large amount of photoresponsive materials have been reported, the construction of these smart materials into precisely prescribed complex 3D geometries is rarely studied. Here we designed a novel photoresponsive material methyl methacrylate containing triphenylethylene (TrPEF₂-MA) that can be directly used for digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. Based on TrPEF₂-MA, a series of photoresponsive 3D structures with reversible color switching under ultraviolet/visible light irradiations were fabricated. These complex photoresponsive 3D structures show high resolutions (50 μm), excellent repeatability (25 cycles without fatigue), and tunable saturate color degrees. Multicomponent DLP 3D printing processes were also carried out to demonstrate their great properties in information hiding and information-carrying properties. This design strategy for constructing photoresponsive 3D structures is attractive in the area of adaptive camouflage, information hiding, information storage, and flexible electronics.

3D nanoprinting of semiconductor quantum dots by photoexcitation-induced chemical bonding

Three-dimensional (3D) laser nanoprinting allows maskless manufacturing of diverse nanostructures with nanoscale resolution. However, 3D manufacturing of inorganic nanostructures typically requires nanomaterial-polymer composites and is limited by a photopolymerization mechanism, resulting in a reduction of material purity and degradation of intrinsic properties. We developed a polymerization-independent, laser direct writing technique called photoexcitation-induced chemical bonding. Without any additives, the holes excited inside semiconductor quantum dots are transferred to the nanocrystal surface and improve their chemical reactivity, leading to interparticle chemical bonding. As a proof of concept, we printed arbitrary 3D quantum dot architectures at a resolution beyond the diffraction limit. Our strategy will enable the manufacturing of free-form quantum dot optoelectronic devices such as light-emitting devices or photodetectors.

High-resolution sub-millimetre diameter side-viewing all-optical ultrasound transducer based on a single dual-clad optical fibre

All-optical ultrasound (OpUS), where ultrasound is both generated and received using light, has emerged as a modality well-suited to highly miniaturised applications. In this work we present a proof-of-concept OpUS transducer built onto a single optical fibre with a highly miniaturised lateral dimension (<0.8 mm). A key innovation was to use a dual-clad optical fibre (DCF) to provide multimode light for ultrasound generation and single mode light for ultrasound reception. The transducer comprised a proximal section of DCF spliced to a short section of single mode fibre (SMF). Multimode light was outcoupled at the splice joint and guided within a square capillary to provide excitation for ultrasound generation. Whilst single mode light was guided to the distal tip of the SMF to a plano-concave microresonator for ultrasound reception. The device was capable of generating ultrasound with pressures >0.4 MPa and a corresponding bandwidth >27 MHz. Concurrent ultrasound generation and reception from the transducer enabled imaging via motorised pull-back allowing image acquisition times of 4 s for an aperture of 20 mm. Image resolution was as low as ~50 µm and 190 µm in the axial and lateral extents, respectively, without the need for image reconstruction. Porcine aorta was imaged ex vivo demonstrating detailed ultrasound images. The unprecedented level of miniaturisation along with the high image quality produced by this device represents a radical new paradigm for minimally invasive imaging.

Two-Photon 3D Printing in Metal-Organic Framework Single Crystals

Two-photon polymerization (TPP) is a micro/nano-fabrication technology for additive manufacturing, enabling 3D printing of polymeric materials using ultrafast laser pulses. In this work, two-photon polymerization is realized inside a metal-organic framework (MOF) crystal. Intricate structures are built in the porous crystal to create a microstructure-in-crystal hybrid. Furthermore, the MOF can be removed by acid treatment to release the printed structure. The two-photon polymerization inside the crystal has the potential for MOF sensing device fabrication and data storage applications. In the future development, printing different materials in the same MOF crystal for creating functional 3D devices is hoped.

High Precision 3D Printing for Micro to Nano Scale Biomedical and Electronic Devices

Three dimensional printing (3DP), or additive manufacturing, is an exponentially growing process in the fabrication of various technologies with applications in sectors such as electronics, biomedical, pharmaceutical and tissue engineering. Micro and nano scale printing is encouraging the innovation of the aforementioned sectors, due to the ability to control design, material and chemical properties at a highly precise level, which is advantageous in creating a high surface area to volume ratio and altering the overall products’ mechanical and physical properties. In this review, micro/-nano printing technology, mainly related to lithography, inkjet and electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing and their biomedical and electronic applications will be discussed. The current limitations to micro/-nano printing methods will be examined, covering the difficulty in achieving controlled structures at the miniscule micro and nano scale required for specific applications.

Overview of 3D-Printed Silica Glass

Not satisfied with the current stage of the extensive research on 3D printing technology for polymers and metals, researchers are searching for more innovative 3D printing technologies for glass fabrication in what has become the latest trend of interest. The traditional glass manufacturing process requires complex high-temperature melting and casting processes, which presents a great challenge to the fabrication of arbitrarily complex glass devices. The emergence of 3D printing technology provides a good solution. This paper reviews the recent advances in glass 3D printing, describes the history and development of related technologies, and lists popular applications of 3D printing for glass preparation. This review compares the advantages and disadvantages of various processing methods, summarizes the problems encountered in the process of technology application, and proposes the corresponding solutions to select the most appropriate preparation method in practical applications. The application of additive manufacturing in glass fabrication is in its infancy but has great potential. Based on this view, the methods for glass preparation with 3D printing technology are expected to achieve both high-speed and high-precision fabrication.

Laser 3D Printing of Inorganic Free-Form Micro-Optics

A pilot study on laser 3D printing of inorganic free-form micro-optics is experimentally validated. Ultrafast laser direct-write (LDW) nanolithography is employed for structuring hybrid organic-inorganic material SZ2080TM followed by high-temperature calcination post-processing. The combination allows the production of 3D architectures and the heat-treatment results in converting the material to inorganic substances. The produced miniature optical elements are characterized and their optical performance is demonstrated. Finally, the concept is validated for manufacturing compound optical components such as stacked lenses. This is an opening for new directions and applications of laser-made micro-optics under harsh conditions such as high intensity radiation, temperature, acidic environment, pressure variations, which include open space, astrophotonics, and remote sensing.
