Self-Assembly of Peptides as an Alluring Approach toward Cancer Treatment and Imaging

Cancer is a severe threat to humans, as it is the second leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases and still poses the biggest challenge in the world of medicine. Due to its higher mortality rates and resistance, it requires a more focused and productive approach to provide the solution for it. Many therapies promising to deliver favorable results, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, have come up with more negatives than positives. Therefore, a new class of medicinal solutions and a more targeted approach is of the essence. This review highlights the alluring properties, configurations, and self-assembly of peptide molecules which benefit the traditional approach toward cancer therapy while sparing the healthy cells in the process. As targeted drug delivery systems, self-assembled peptides offer a wide spectrum of conjugation, biocompatibility, degradability-controlled responsiveness, and biomedical applications, including cancer treatment and cancer imaging.

Highly Ordered Co-Assembly of Bisurea Functionalized Molecular Switches at the Solid-Liquid Interface

Immobilization of stimulus-responsive systems on solid surfaces is beneficial for controlled signal transmission and adaptive behavior while allowing the characterization of the functional interface with high sensitivity and high spatial resolution. Positioning of the stimuli-responsive units with nanometer-scale precision across the adaptive surface remains one of the bottlenecks in the extraction of cooperative function. Nanoscale organization, cooperativity, and amplification remain key challenges in bridging the molecular and the macroscopic worlds. Here we report on the design, synthesis, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) characterization of overcrowded alkene photoswitches merged in self-assembled networks physisorbed at the solid-liquid interface. A detailed anchoring strategy that ensures appropriate orientation of the switches with respect to the solid surface through the use of bis-urea groups is presented. We implement a co-assembly strategy that enables the merging of the photoswitches within physisorbed monolayers of structurally similar 'spacer' molecules. The self-assembly of the individual components and the co-assemblies was examined in detail using (sub)molecular resolution STM which confirms the robust immobilization and controlled orientation of the photoswitches within the spacer monolayers. The experimental STM data is supported by detailed molecular mechanics (MM) simulations. Different designs of the switches and the spacers were investigated which allowed us to formulate guidelines that enable the precise organization of the photoswitches in crystalline physisorbed self-assembled molecular networks.

Preparation and Application of Polyrotaxane Cross-Linking Agent Based on Cyclodextrin in Gel Materials Field

The cross-linking point of a conventional chemical cross-linking agent is fixed. Therefore, gels that are prepared with a conventional cross-linking agent have poor deformability, strength, shear resistance, and further properties. Some researchers have prepared a new cross-linking agent using cyclodextrin (CD). In a polyrotaxane cross-linking agent, the cross-linking points can slide freely along the molecule chain. The special "slide ring" structure can provide better elongation, strength, and other properties to gels, which can effectively expand the application of the gel's materials. This paper summarizes the preparation methods and applications from different types of CD and compares the improvements of properties (swelling, viscoelastic properties, etc.). In addition, the current results of our group are presented, and some ideas are provided for the development of polyrotaxane cross-linking agents.

High-Performance Phototransistor Memory with an Ultrahigh Memory Ratio Conferred Using Hydrogen-Bonded Supramolecular Electrets

As the research of photonic electronics thrives, the enhanced efficacy from an optic unit cell can considerably improve the performance of an optoelectronic device. In this regard, organic phototransistor memory with a fast programming/readout and a distinguished memory ratio produces an advantageous outlook to fulfill the demand for advanced applications. In this study, a hydrogen-bonded supramolecular electret is introduced into the phototransistor memory, which comprises porphyrin dyes, meso-tetra(4-aminophenyl)porphine, meso-tetra(p-hydroxyphenyl)porphine, and meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine (TCPP), and insulated polymers, poly(4-vinylpyridine) and poly(4-vinylphenol) (PVPh). To combine the optical absorption of porphyrin dyes, dinaphtho[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DNTT) is selected as a semiconducting channel. The porphyrin dyes serve as the ambipolar trapping moiety, while the insulated polymers form a barrier to stabilize the trapped charges by forming hydrogen-bonded supramolecules. We find that the hole-trapping capability of the device is determined by the electrostatic potential distribution in the supramolecules, whereas the electron-trapping capability and the surface proton doping originated from hydrogen bonding and interfacial interactions. Among them, PVPh:TCPP with an optimal hydrogen bonding pattern in the supramolecular electret produces the highest memory ratio of 1.12 × 10⁸ over 10⁴ s, which is the highest performance among the reported achievements. Our results suggest that the hydrogen-bonded supramolecular electret can enhance the memory performance by fine-tuning their bond strength and cast light on a potential pathway to future photonic electronics.

Self-Assembled Plasmonic Nanojunctions Mediated by Host-Guest Interaction for Ultrasensitive Dual-Mode Detection of Cholesterol

Herein, a fluorescence and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy dual-mode system was designed for cholesterol detection based on self-assembled plasmonic nanojunctions mediated by the competition of rhodamine 6G (R6G) and cholesterol with β-cyclodextrin modified on gold nanoparticles (HS-β-CD@Au). The fluorescence of R6G was quenched by HS-β-CD@Au due to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer effect. When cholesterol was introduced as the competitive guest, R6G in the cavities of HS-β-CD@Au was displaced to recover its fluorescence. Moreover, two of HS-β-CD@Au can be linked by one cholesterol to form a more stable 2:1 complex, and then, plasmonic nanojunctions were generated, which resulted in the increasing SERS signal of R6G. In addition, fluorescence and SERS intensity of R6G increased linearly with the increase in the cholesterol concentrations with the limits of detection of 95 and 74 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the dual-mode strategy can realize the reliable and sensitive detection of cholesterol in the serum with good accuracy, and two sets of data can mutually validate each other, which demonstrated great application prospects in the surveillance of diseases related with cholesterol.

Solution-Synthesized Extended Graphene Nanoribbons Deposited by High-Vacuum Electrospray Deposition

Solution-synthesized graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) facilitate various interesting structures and functionalities, like nonplanarity and thermolabile functional groups, that are not or not easily accessible by on-surface synthesis. Here, we show the successful high-vacuum electrospray deposition (HVESD) of well-elongated solution-synthesized GNRs on surfaces maintained in ultrahigh vacuum. We compare three distinct GNRs, a twisted nonplanar fjord-edged GNR, a methoxy-functionalized "cove"-type (or also called gulf) GNR, and a longer "cove"-type GNR both equipped with alkyl chains on Au(111). Nc-AFM measurements at room temperature with submolecular imaging combined with Raman spectroscopy allow us to characterize individual GNRs and confirm their chemical integrity. The fjord-GNR and methoxy-GNR are additionally deposited on nonmetallic HOPG and SiO2, and fjord-GNR is deposited on a KBr(001) surface, facilitating the study of GNRs on substrates, as of now not accessible by on-surface synthesis.

Electrochemical atomic force microscopy of two-dimensional trinuclear ruthenium clusters molecular assembly and dynamics under redox state control

Mixed-valence ruthenium trinuclear clusters containing dichloroacetates were synthesized, and the self-assembly of a single molecular adlayer composed of these clusters on a graphite surface was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM clearly revealed the dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) structure formation as well as the molecular characteristics of the adlayers at different electrochemical interfaces. The results verified that the design of metal complexes is important not only for redox chemistry but also for molecular assembly and nanoarchitecture construction.

Influence of Different Substitution Patterns on the 2D Crystalline Aggregation of Small Molecules on HOPG Surfaces

A series of benzoic and terephthalic acid derivatives and their corresponding ethyl esters have been synthesized. These are decorated with dendritic units carrying alkoxy chains that differ in the number of alkoxy groups and/or their substitution pattern. These molecules were deposited from solution on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, and the resulting supramolecular surface patterns have been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy at the solid/liquid interface. Thus, we were able to perform a systematic study on the influence of orthogonal functional groups governing the supramolecular assembly, that is, the alkoxy chains of dendritic units and the carboxylic acid (ester) functions, on the intermolecular interactions, that is, van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding between the adsorbed species that drive the pattern formation.

Molecular planting of a single organothiol into a "gap-site" of a 2D patterned adlayer in an electrochemical environment

The self-assembled inclusion of molecules into two-dimensional (2D) porous networks on surfaces has been extensively studied because 2D functional materials consisting of organic molecules have become an important research topic. However, the isolation of a single molecular thiol remains a challenging goal. Here, we report a method of planting and isolating organothiols onto a 2D patterned organic adlayer at an electrochemical interface. In situ scanning tunneling microscopy revealed that the phase transition of an ovalene adlayer is electrochemically induced and that the gap site created by three ovalene molecules serves as a 2D molecular template to isolate thiol molecules and to standardize the distance between them via the formation of precise selective open spaces, suggesting that electrochemical "molecular planting" opens applications for 2D patterns of isolated single organothiol molecules.

Metallic Oxide-Induced Self-Assembly of Block Copolymers to Form Polymeric Hybrid Micelles with Tunable Stability for Tumor Microenvironment-Responsive Drug Delivery

Since block copolymers are able to self-assemble into various polymeric architectures, it is intriguing to explore a unique self-assembly strategy for polymers. Two different metallic oxides [manganese dioxide (MnO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO)] are displayed herein to demonstrate this self-assembly mechanism of polymers. In situ generation of metallic oxides induces self-assembly of block copolymers to form polymeric hybrid micelles with tunable stability in aqueous solutions. These final ZnO-cross-linked polymeric micelles exhibited a high drug loading capacity of 0.41 mg mg-1 toward doxorubicin (DOX), whereas DOX-loaded ZnO-cross-linked polymeric micelles could be broken down into Zn2+ and polymer scraps, which facilitated drug release in tumor microenvironments. Both in vitro and in vivo investigations showed that the drug-loaded ZnO-cross-linked polymeric micelles effectively suppressed tumor growth. Accordingly, the present study demonstrates a novel strategy of polymer self-assembly for fabricating polymeric architectures that can potentially provide insight for developing other polymeric architectures.

Supramolecular Chemistry: Host-Guest Molecular Complexes

In recent times, researchers have emphasized practical approaches for capturing coordinated and selective guest entrap. The physisorbed nanoporous supramolecular complexes have been widely used to restrain various guest species on compact supporting surfaces. The host-guest (HG) interactions in two-dimensional (2D) permeable porous linkages are growing expeditiously due to their future applications in biocatalysis, separation technology, or nanoscale patterning. The different crystal-like nanoporous network has been acquired to enclose and trap guest molecules of various dimensions and contours. The host centers have been lumped together via noncovalent interactions (such as hydrogen bonds, van der Waals (vdW) interactions, or coordinate bonds). In this review article, we enlighten and elucidate recent progress in HG chemistry, explored via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We summarize the synthesis, design, and characterization of typical HG structural design examined on various substrates, under ambient surroundings at the liquid-solid (LS) interface, or during ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). We emphasize isoreticular complexes, vibrant HG coordination, or hosts functional cavities responsive to the applied stimulus. Finally, we critically discuss the significant challenges in advancing this developing electrochemical field.

Controlled Construction of an Exquisite Three-Component Co-assembly Supramolecular Structure at the Liquid-Solid Interface

A three-component supramolecular co-assembly structure formed at the liquid-solid interface by employing a shape-persistent π-conjugated macrocycle (1_6mer) and two guest molecules (COR and C₆₀) is demonstrated. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observations revealed that 1_6mer can serve as a versatile host molecule that can co-assemble with both COR and C₆₀ guest molecules to form stable two-component structures, where the COR guest molecule filled in the gap between the side chains of adjacent 1_6mer molecules, and the C₆₀ guest molecule entered the inner cavity of 1_6mer. It was found that the adding sequence of COR and C₆₀ guest molecules is crucial to the resulting co-adsorption structure in the three-component system. To obtain the intriguing 1_6mer-COR-C₆₀ three-component co-assembly structure, the 1_6mer and COR two-component co-assembly structure should first be constructed on a HOPG surface, followed by addition of C₆₀. Based on the analysis of the STM results and the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the formation mechanism of the assembled structures was revealed.

Chirality in porous self-assembled monolayer networks at liquid/solid interfaces: induction, reversion, recognition and transfer

Chirality in two dimensions (2D) has attracted increasing attention with regard to interesting fundamental aspects as well as potential applications. This article reports several aspects of supramolecular chirality control as exemplified by self-assembled monolayer networks (SAMNs) formed by a class of chiral building blocks consisting of a triangular conjugated core and alkoxy chains on the periphery. It highlights 2D chirality induction phenomena through a classic "sergeants-and-soldiers" mechanism, in which the inducer is incorporated into a network component, as well as through a "supramolecular host-guest" mechanism, in which the inducer is entrapped in the porous space, leading to counterintuitive chirality reversal. Stereochemical control can be extended to three dimensions too, based on interlayer hydrogen bonding of the same class of building blocks bearing hydroxy groups, exhibiting diastereospecific bilayer formation at both single molecule level and supramolecular level arising from orientation between the top and bottom layers. Finally, we showcase that homochiral SAMNs can also be used as templates for the grafting of in situ generated aryl radicals, by covalent bond formation to the basal graphitic surface, thereby yielding topologically chiral functionalized graphite, and thus extending the potential of chiral SAMNs.

Halogen Bonding in Bicomponent Monolayers: Self-Assembly of a Homologous Series of Iodinated Perfluoroalkanes with Bipyridine

A homologous series of halogen bonding monolayers based on terminally iodinated perfluoroalkanes and 4,4'-bipyridine have been observed on a graphitic surface and noninvasively probed using powder X-ray diffraction. An excellent agreement is observed between the X-ray structures and density functional theory calculations with dispersion force corrections. Theoretical analysis of the binding energies of the structures indicate that these halogen bonds are strong (25 kJ mol^-1), indicating that the layers are highly stable. The monolayer structures are found to be distinct from any plane of the corresponding bulk structures, with limited evidence of partitioning of hydrocarbon and perfluoro tectons. The interchain interactions are found to be slightly stronger than those in related aromatic systems, with important implications for 2D crystal engineering.

Growth of a self-assembled monolayer decoupled from the substrate: nucleation on-command using buffer layers

Structural polymorphism is ubiquitous in physisorbed self-assembled monolayers formed at the solution-solid interface. One of the ways to influence network formation at this interface is to physically decouple the self-assembled monolayer from the underlying substrate thereby removing the influence of the substrate lattice, if any. Here we show a systematic exploration of self-assembly of a typical building block, namely 4-tetradecyloxybenzoic acid at the 1-phenyloctane-graphite interface in the presence and in the absence of a buffer layer formed by a long chain alkane, namely n-pentacontane. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), three different structural polymorphs were identified for 4-tetradecyloxybenzoic acid at the 1-phenyloctane-graphite interface. Surprisingly, the same three structures were formed on top of the buffer layer, albeit at different concentrations. Systematic variation of experimental parameters did not lead to any new network in the presence of the buffer layer. We discovered that the self-assembly on top of the buffer layer allows better control over the nanoscale manipulation of the self-assembled networks. Using the influence of the STM tip, we could initiate the nucleation of small isolated domains of the benzoic acid on-command in a reproducible fashion. Such controlled nucleation experiments hold promise for studying fundamental processes inherent to the assembly process on surfaces.

Halogen Bonding in Two-Dimensional Crystal Engineering

Halogen bonds, which provide an intermolecular interaction with moderate strength and high directionality, have emerged as a promising tool in the repertoire of non-covalent interactions. In this review, we provide a survey of the literature where halogen bonding was used for the fabrication of supramolecular networks on solid surfaces. The definitions of, and the distinction between halogen bonding and halogen-halogen interactions are provided. Self-assembled networks formed at the solution/solid interface and at the vacuum-solid interface, stabilized in part by halogen bonding, are discussed. Besides the broad classification based on the interface at which the systems are studied, the systems are categorized further as those sustained by halogen-halogen and halogen-heteroatom contacts.

Giant thermal expansion of a two-dimensional supramolecular network triggered by alkyl chain motion

Thermal expansion, the response in shape, area or volume of a solid with heat, is usually large in molecular materials compared to their inorganic counterparts. Resulting from the intrinsic molecule flexibility, conformational changes or variable intermolecular interactions, the exact interplay between these mechanisms is however poorly understood down to the molecular level. Here, we investigate the structural variations of a two-dimensional supramolecular network on Au(111) consisting of shape persistent polyphenylene molecules equipped with peripheral dodecyl chains. By comparing high-resolution scanning probe microscopy and molecular dynamics simulations obtained at 5 and 300 K, we determine the thermal expansion coefficient of the assembly of 980 ± 110 × 10^-6 K^-1, twice larger than other molecular systems hitherto reported in the literature, and two orders of magnitude larger than conventional materials. This giant positive expansion originates from the increased mobility of the dodecyl chains with temperature that determine the intermolecular interactions and the network spacing.

Fluorinated carboxylic acids as powerful building blocks for the formation of bimolecular monolayers

We compare the ability of a prototypical dicarboxylic acid and its fluorinated analogue to act as molecular building blocks for the formation of self-assembled monolayers. Whilst fluorination is found to prevent homomolecular self-assembly, it greatly increases the ability of the carboxylic acid to act as a hydrogen bond donor for the formation of bimolecular networks.

One-shot preparation of topologically chimeric nanofibers via a gradient supramolecular copolymerization

Supramolecular polymers have emerged in the last decade as highly accessible polymeric nanomaterials. An important step toward finely designed nanomaterials with versatile functions, such as those of natural proteins, is intricate topological control over their main chains. Herein, we report the facile one-shot preparation of supramolecular copolymers involving segregated secondary structures. By cooling non-polar solutions containing two monomers that individually afford helically folded and linearly extended secondary structures, we obtain unique nanofibers with coexisting distinct secondary structures. A spectroscopic analysis of the formation process of such topologically chimeric fibers reveals that the monomer composition varies gradually during the polymerization due to the formation of heteromeric hydrogen-bonded intermediates. We further demonstrate the folding of these chimeric fibers by light-induced deformation of the linearly extended segments.

The polymorphism of porphyrin 2D assemblies at the liquid-graphite interface: the effect of a polar solvent additive and a flexible spacer on the face-on and edge-on type molecular arrangements

Self-assembly structures of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-substituted phenyl)porphyrins at the liquid-graphite interface were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. We found that the presence of a small amount of a polar solvent, i.e., only 0.5 vol% of octanoic acid in phenyloctane, significantly affected the selective formation of the face-on polymorph over the edge-on one likely due to the solvent-molecule interactions at the 2D interface.

Bottom-Up Self-Assembled Supramolecular Structures Built by STM at the Solid/Liquid Interface

One of the lines of research on organic devices is focused on their miniaturization to obtain denser and faster electronic circuits. The challenge is to build devices adding atom by atom or molecule by molecule until the desired structures are achieved. To do this job, techniques able to see and manipulate matter at this scale are needed. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been the selected technique by scientists to develop smart and functional unimolecular devices. This review article compiles the latest developments in this field giving examples of supramolecular systems monitored and fabricated at the molecular scale by bottom-up approaches using STM at the solid/liquid interface.

Counterion Effects on Aggregate Structure of 12-Hydroxystearate Salts in Hexane: A Quantum Mechanical and Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study

Salts of 12-hydroxystearate are important organogelators and grease thickeners, but a structural rationale for their rheological properties remains elusive. We use quantum mechanical calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to analyze aggregate structures for (1) ( R)-12-hydroxystearic acid (( R)-12HSA), (2) lithium ( R)-12-hydroxystearate (( R)-Li12HS), and (3) sodium ( R)-12-hydroxystearate (( R)-Na12HS). First, quantum mechanical calculations were used to establish the structure and complexation energies of dimers of acetic acid, lithium acetate, and sodium acetate. The expected acetic acid dimer is predicted, and both the lithium acetate and sodium acetate dimer formed a C_{2 h}-symmetric structure. All dimers were sufficiently stable to allow modeling them as pseudocovalent complexes in all-atom, explicit solvent MD. After microsecond-long MD, all systems produced strong ringlike ordered nuclei. The C_{2 h} lithium salt molecules produced aggregates that had the most efficient packing at the head group and a higher frequency of hydroxyl hydrogen bonding compared to the sodium salt. This ordering propensity explains the high melting temperature of ( R)-Li12HS. Also, the higher frequency of hydrogen bonding leads to fewer solvent-exposed hydrogen bond partners. This explains why lithium is a common counterion in high-temperature and water-resistant greases.

Cooperation and competition of hydrogen and halogen bonds in 2D self-assembled nanostructures based on bromine substituted coumarins

Three coumarin derivatives (Co16, 6-Br-Co16 and 6,8-Br-Co16) with ester, ether, and carbonyl groups and different numbers of bromine substituents on the coumarin cores were synthesized.

Toward Tunable Electroluminescent Devices by Correlating Function and Submolecular Structure in 3D Crystals, 2D-Confined Monolayers, and Dimers

The synthesis of new Pt(II) complexes bearing tailored cyclometalated C^N*N^C luminophores is reported along with their photophysical properties. The emission of the monomeric species can be blue shifted upon formal isosteric replacement of two C-H units by N atoms at the two cyclometalating rings. Their remarkable stability upon sublimation was demonstrated by means of scanning tunneling microscopy, which also revealed a defined self-assembly behavior leading to supramolecular arrays, showing a 3-fold symmetry in 2D-confined monolayers. The supramolecular organization is driven by van der Waals interactions of the side chains and does not depend on the nature of the luminophores, as also observed in the crystalline phases showing no significant Pt-Pt interactions in 3D. Conversely, the luminescence properties in glassy matrices at 77 K and in amorphous solids are indicative of intermolecular interactions with sizable intermetallic coupling, which was demonstrated by reproducing the emission spectra of dimeric species by means of (TD)DFT calculations. The tendency toward aggregation was also traceable by cyclic voltammetry, whereas thermogravimetric analyses confirmed their stability. Solution-processed and vacuum-deposited OLED devices showed a concentration-dependent electroluminescence that red shifts with increasing doping ratios. Due to the stability of the complexes, solution-processed and vacuum-deposited devices showed identical electroluminescence spectra. Besides favoring aggregation, introduction of two N atoms has a detrimental effect on the device performance, due to the prolonged excited-state lifetimes favoring triplet-triplet annihilation.

Impact of helical organization on the photovoltaic properties of oligothiophene supramolecular polymers

Higher order structures of semiconducting supramolecular polymers have a huge impact on their BHJ-OPV device performance.

Helical self-assembly of functional π-conjugated molecules offers unique photochemical and electronic properties in the spectroscopic level, but there are only a few examples that demonstrate their positive impact on the optoelectronic device level. Here, we demonstrate that hydrogen-bonded tapelike supramolecular polymers of a barbiturated oligo(alkylthiophene) show notable improvement in their photovoltaic properties upon organizing into helical nanofibers. A tapelike hydrogen-bonded supramolecular array of barbiturated oligo(butylthiophene) molecules was directly visualized by STM at a liquid–solid interface. TEM, AFM and XRD revealed that the tapelike supramolecular polymers further organize into helical nanofibers in solution and bulk states. Bulk heterojunction solar cells of the helical nanofibers and soluble fullerene showed a power conversion efficiency of 4.5%, which is markedly high compared to that of the regioisomer of butyl chains organizing into 3D lamellar agglomerates.

Host-guest chemistry in two-dimensional supramolecular networks

Nanoporous supramolecular networks physisorbed on solid surfaces have been extensively used to immobilize a variety of guest molecules. Host-guest chemistry in such two-dimensional (2D) porous networks is a rapidly expanding field due to potential applications in separation technology, catalysis and nanoscale patterning. Diverse structural topologies with high crystallinity have been obtained to capture molecular guests of different sizes and shapes. A range of non-covalent forces such as hydrogen bonds, van der Waals interactions, coordinate bonds have been employed to assemble the host networks. Recent years have witnessed a surge in the activity in this field with the implementation of rational design strategies for realizing controlled and selective guest capture. In this feature article, we review the development in the field of surface-supported host-guest chemistry as studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Typical host-guest architectures studied on solid surfaces, both under ambient conditions at the solution-solid interface as well as those formed at the ultrahigh vacuum (UHV)-solid interface, are described. We focus on isoreticular host networks, hosts functionalized pores and dynamic host-guest systems that respond to external stimuli.

Molecular recognition and activation by polyaza macrocyclic compounds based on host-guest interactions

The design and syntheses of supramolecular hosts for the recognition and activation of molecules and anions are one of the most active research fields in supramolecular chemistry, in which polyaza macrocyclic ligands and their complexes have drawn particular attention due to their strong host-guest interactions. This review mainly focuses on the recent progress in the recognition of molecules and anions by polyaza macrocyclic compounds including polyaza macrocycles, polyaza macrobicycles and polyaza macrotricycles, as well as the activation of molecules by polyaza macrocyclic ligands and their metal complexes.

Electrospray deposition of structurally complex molecules revealed by atomic force microscopy

Advances in organic chemistry allow the synthesis of large, complex and highly functionalized organic molecules having potential applications in optoelectronics, molecular electronics and organic solar cells. Their integration into devices as individual components or highly ordered thin-films is of paramount importance to address these future prospects. However, conventional sublimation techniques in vacuum are usually not applicable since large organic compounds are often non-volatile and decompose upon heating. Here, we prove by atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, the structural integrity of complex organic molecules deposited onto an Au(111) surface using electrospray ionisation deposition. High resolution AFM measurements with CO-terminated tips unambiguously reveal their successful transfer from solution to the gold surface in ultra-high vacuum without degradation of their chemical structures. Furthermore, the formation of molecular structures from small islands to large and highly-ordered self-assemblies of those fragile molecules is demonstrated, confirming the use of electrospray ionisation to promote also on-surface polymerization reactions of highly functionalized organic compounds, biological molecules or molecular magnets.

Superstructure manipulation and electronic measurement of monolayers comprising discotic liquid crystals with intrinsic dipole moment using STM/STS

In this work, we studied the discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) of dibenzo[a,c]phenazine at the liquid–solid interface using scanning tunnelling microscopy/spectroscopy, by which we show how to tailor the DLC assemblies and in turn their electron-transfer efficiency.

Hexagonal Molecular Tiling by Hexagonal Macrocycles at the Liquid/Solid Interface: Structural Effects on Packing Geometry

We present here hexagonal tiling using hexagonal phenylene-ethynylene and phenylene-butadiynylene macrocycles attached by alkyl ester groups, PEM-C6 and PBM-C8, respectively, or triethylene glycol ester groups, PEM-TEG and PBM-TEG, respectively, at each vertex of the macrocyclic periphery at the liquid/solid interface. In this study, we focused on the effects of macrocyclic core size and the chemical properties of side chains attached to macrocyclic cores as well as solute concentrations on the hexagonal geometry of self-assembled monolayers. STM observations at the 1,2,4-trichrolobenzene/graphite interface revealed that PEM-C6 formed a honeycomb structure by van der Waals interactions between the interdigitated alkyl chains. However, upon increasing solute concentration, it changed to more dense hexagonal structure (tentatively called loose hexagonal structure I). In contrast, PBM-C8 formed loose hexagonal structure II of a slightly different packing mode at low concentration, while at high concentration it formed a high-density hexagonal structure in which alkyl chains are not adsorbed on the surface (dense hexagonal structure). In the dense hexagonal structure, macrocyclic cores are linked by hydrogen bonds between the ester carbonyl oxygen and the aromatic hydrogen atoms of the neighboring macrocycles. The packing geometries of loose hexagonal structures of PEM-C6 and PBM-C8 are different due to the different distance between the attachment of the alkyl ester groups which are located in confined space. On the other hand, PEM-TEG and PBM-TEG formed dense hexagonal structures, similar to PBM-C8 at high concentration, with their TEG units not adsorbed on the surface.

Transfer of chiral information from a chiral solvent to a two-dimensional network

Chiral induction in self-assembled monolayers has garnered considerable attention in the recent past, not only due to its importance in chiral resolution and enantioselective heterogeneous catalysis but also because of its relevance to the origin of homochirality in life. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of homochirality in a supramolecular low-density network formed by achiral molecules at the interface of a chiral solvent and an atomically-flat achiral substrate. We focus on the impact of structure and functionality of the adsorbate and the chiral solvent on the chiral induction efficiency in self-assembled physisorbed monolayers, as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Different induction mechanisms are proposed and evaluated, with the assistance of advanced molecular modeling simulations.

Effects of Optical Purity and Finite System Size on Self-Assembly of 12-Hydroxystearic Acid in Hexane: Molecular Dynamics Simulations

12-Hydroxystearic acid (12HSA) and its derivatives are well-known organogelators, and they play critical roles in a variety of applications. The overall aggregate structure of 12HSA is sensitive to the chirality at the 12th carbon, but a fundamental understanding of this dependence is lacking. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted on microsecond long time scales for (1) (R)-12HSA, (2) (S)-12HSA, and (3) a 50/50 racemic mixture, each solvated at 12.5 wt % in explicit hexane. Self-assembly was accelerated by turning off alkyl chain dihedral gauche states and forcing the molecules to adopt an all-trans conformation. The stability of the resulting aggregates was tested by quenching them with access to gauche states restored. Ordered aggregates produced from optically pure (R)- and (S)-12HSA remained stable for at least 1 μs. The characteristic ordered structure observed is termed a "ring-of-rings" motif, and it contains two twisted six-membered ringlike bundles connected through acetic acid dimerization and surrounded by six satellite bundles. The chirality at the 12th carbon dictates the overall twist of the rings and thereby the handedness of the aggregates. Racemic mixtures did not produce stable ordered aggregates likely due to insufficient enantiomerically pure ring formation. The most prevalent finite-size effect observed was the stochastic formation of percolating aggregates, which were later avoided by using solvent-permeable, solute-impermeable, confining walls. The resulting ordered aggregates were in all important ways identical to those produced in unconfined systems. The combination of cycling off and on gauche states and the semipermeable walls may be an important new way to study the self-assembly underlying aggregation at industrially relevant concentrations of surfactants in organic solvents.

Construction of 2D nanoporous networks by coupling on-surface dynamic imine chemistry and dipole-stabilized self-assembly

Double-walled nanoporous networks based on the Schiff base reaction of nonplanar tripodic building blocks and subsequent dipole-directed self-assembly were fabricated on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) at the gas-solid interface. This is the first example of nonplanar molecules exploited as precursors for a surface reaction.

Host-Guest Chemistry in Integrated Porous Space Formed by Molecular Self-Assembly at Liquid-Solid Interfaces

Host-guest chemistry in two-dimensional (2D) space, that is, physisorbed monolayers of a single atom or a single molecular thickness on surfaces, has become a subject of intense current interest because of perspectives for various applications in molecular-scale electronics, selective sensors, and tailored catalysis. Scanning tunneling microscopy has been used as a powerful tool for the visualization of molecules in real space on a conducting substrate surface. For more than a decade, we have been investigating the self-assembly of a series of triangle-shaped phenylene-ethynylene macrocycles called dehydrobenzo[12]annulenes (DBAs). These molecules are substituted with six alkyl chains and are capable of forming hexagonal porous 2D molecular networks via van der Waals interactions between interdigitated alkyl chains at the interface of organic solvents and graphite. The dimension of the nanoporous space or nanowell formed by the self-assembly of DBAs can be controlled from 1.6 to 4.7 nm by simply changing the alkyl chain length from C₆ to C₂₀. Single molecules as well as homoclusters and heteroclusters are capable of coadsorbing within the host matrix using shape- and size-complementarity principles. Moreover, on the basis of the versatility of the DBA molecules that allows chemical modification of the alkyl chain terminals, we were able to decorate the interior space of the nanoporous networks with functional groups such as azobenzenedicarboxylic acid for photoresponsive guest adsorption/desorption or fluoroalkanes and tetraethylene glycol groups for selective guest binding by electrostatic interactions and zinc-porphyrin units for complexation with a guest by charge-transfer interactions. In this Feature Article, we describe the general aspects of molecular self-assembly at liquid/solid interfaces, followed by the formation of programmed porous molecular networks using rationally designed molecular building blocks. We focus on our own work involving host-guest chemistry in integrated nanoporous space that is modified for specific purposes.
