Designing transition metal-based porous architectures for supercapacitor electrodes: a review

Over the past decade, transition metal (TM)-based electrodes have shown intriguing physicochemical properties and widespread applications, especially in the field of supercapacitor energy storage owing to their diverse configurations, composition, porosity, and redox reactions. As one of the most intriguing research interests, the design of porous architectures in TM-based electrode materials has been demonstrated to facilitate ion/electron transport, modulate their electronic structure, diminish strain relaxation, and realize synergistic effects of multi-metals. Herein, the recent advances in porous TM-based electrodes are summarized, focusing on their typical synthesis strategies, including template-mediated assembly, thermal decomposition strategy, chemical deposition strategy, and host-guest hybridization strategy. Simultaneously, the corresponding conversion mechanism of each synthesis strategy are reviewed, and the merits and demerits of each strategy in building porous architectures are also discussed. Subsequently, TM-based electrode materials are categorized into TM oxides, TM hydroxides, TM sulfides, TM phosphides, TM carbides, and other TM species with a detailed review of their crystalline phase, electronic structure, and microstructure evolution to tune their electrochemical energy storage capacity. Finally, the challenges and prospects of porous TM-based electrode materials are presented to guide the future development in this field.

Binder-Free MOF-Based and MOF-Derived Nanoarrays for Flexible Electrochemical Energy Storage: Progress and Perspectives

The fast development of Internet of Things and the rapid advent of next-generation versatile wearable electronics require cost-effective and highly-efficient electroactive materials for flexible electrochemical energy storage devices. Among various electroactive materials, binder-free nanostructured arrays have attracted widespread attention. Featured with growing on a conductive and flexible substrate without using inactive and insulating binders, binder-free 3D nanoarray electrodes facilitate fast electron/ion transportation and rapid reaction kinetics with more exposed active sites, maintain structure integrity of electrodes even under bending or twisted conditions, readily release generated joule heat during charge/discharge cycles and achieve enhanced gravimetric capacity of the whole device. Binder-free metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoarrays and/or MOF-derived nanoarrays with high surface area and unique porous structure have emerged with great potential in energy storage field and been extensively exploited in recent years. In this review, common substrates used for binder-free nanoarrays are compared and discussed. Various MOF-based and MOF-derived nanoarrays, including metal oxides, sulfides, selenides, nitrides, phosphides and nitrogen-doped carbons, are surveyed and their electrochemical performance along with their applications in flexible energy storage are analyzed and overviewed. In addition, key technical issues and outlooks on future development of MOF-based and MOF-derived nanoarrays toward flexible energy storage are also offered.

Recent Progress in 2D Metal-Organic Framework-Related Materials

2D metal-organic frameworks-based (2D MOF-related) materials benefit from variable topological structures, plentiful open active sites, and high specific surface areas, demonstrating promising applications in gas storage, adsorption and separation, energy conversion, and other domains. In recent years, researchers have innovatively designed multiple strategies to avoid the adverse effects of conventional methods on the synthesis of high-quality 2D MOFs. This review focuses on the latest advances in creative synthesis techniques for 2D MOF-related materials from both the top-down and bottom-up perspectives. Subsequently, the strategies are categorized and summarized for synthesizing 2D MOF-related composites and their derivatives. Finally, the current challenges are highlighted faced by 2D MOF-related materials and some targeted recommendations are put forward to inspire researchers to investigate more effective synthesis methods.

Enhancing the Properties of Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Composites with Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-Derived Nanocarbons

Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) reinforced with nanocarbon have attracted significant interest due to their potential to enhance mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Although the investigation of carbon-based materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes as additives for advanced ceramics has been widespread, the utilization of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived nanocarbons in CMCs remains largely unexplored. We extended our previous proof-of-concept investigations by demonstrating the effectiveness of a different type of MOF-derived carbon as a reinforcing phase in an alternative ceramic matrix. We employed spark plasma sintering (SPS) to consolidate yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) powder blends at 1300 °C and a uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa. YSZ serves as the ceramic matrix, whereas ZIF-67 serves as the nanocarbon source. The composite exhibits a highly significant improvement in fracture toughness with an increase of up to 13% compared to that of the YSZ monolith. The formation of ZIF-derived nanocarbon interlayers is responsible for the observed enhancement in ductility, which can be attributed to their ability to facilitate energy dissipation during crack propagation and inhibit grain growth. Furthermore, the room-temperature electrical conductivity of the sintered samples demonstrates a substantial improvement, primarily due to the in situ formation of nanocarbon-based fillers, reaching an impressive 27 S/m with 10 wt % ZIF-67 content. Based on the results, it can be inferred that the incorporation of in situ MOF-derived nanocarbons into CMCs leads to a substantial improvement in both the mechanical and electrical properties.

Smart nanoparticles for cancer therapy

Smart nanoparticles, which can respond to biological cues or be guided by them, are emerging as a promising drug delivery platform for precise cancer treatment. The field of oncology, nanotechnology, and biomedicine has witnessed rapid progress, leading to innovative developments in smart nanoparticles for safer and more effective cancer therapy. In this review, we will highlight recent advancements in smart nanoparticles, including polymeric nanoparticles, dendrimers, micelles, liposomes, protein nanoparticles, cell membrane nanoparticles, mesoporous silica nanoparticles, gold nanoparticles, iron oxide nanoparticles, quantum dots, carbon nanotubes, black phosphorus, MOF nanoparticles, and others. We will focus on their classification, structures, synthesis, and intelligent features. These smart nanoparticles possess the ability to respond to various external and internal stimuli, such as enzymes, pH, temperature, optics, and magnetism, making them intelligent systems. Additionally, this review will explore the latest studies on tumor targeting by functionalizing the surfaces of smart nanoparticles with tumor-specific ligands like antibodies, peptides, transferrin, and folic acid. We will also summarize different types of drug delivery options, including small molecules, peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, and even living cells, for their potential use in cancer therapy. While the potential of smart nanoparticles is promising, we will also acknowledge the challenges and clinical prospects associated with their use. Finally, we will propose a blueprint that involves the use of artificial intelligence-powered nanoparticles in cancer treatment applications. By harnessing the potential of smart nanoparticles, this review aims to usher in a new era of precise and personalized cancer therapy, providing patients with individualized treatment options.

Nanoengineering Metal-Organic Frameworks and Derivatives for Electrosynthesis of Ammonia

Electrocatalytic synthesis under mild conditions has become increasingly important as one of the practical alternatives for industrial applications, especially for the green ammonia (NH3) industry. A properly engineered electrocatalyst plays a vital role in the realization of superior catalytic performance. Among various types of promising nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are competitive candidates for developing efficient electrocatalytic NH3 synthesis from simple nitrogen-containing molecules or ions, such as N2 and NO3-. In this review, recent advances in the development of electrocatalysts derived from MOFs for the electrosynthesis of NH3 are collected, categorized, and discussed, including their application in the N2 reduction reaction (NRR) and the NO3- reduction reaction (NO3RR). Firstly, the fundamental principles are illustrated, such as plausible mechanisms of NH3 generation from N2 and NO3-, the apparatus of corresponding electrocatalysis, parameters for evaluation of reaction efficiency, and detection methods of yielding NH3. Then, the electrocatalysts for NRR processes are discussed in detail, including pristine MOFs, MOF-hybrids, MOF-derived N-doped porous carbons, single atomic catalysts from pyrolysis of MOFs, and other MOF-related materials. Subsequently, MOF-related NO3RR processes are also listed and discussed. Finally, the existing challenges and prospects for the rational design and fabrication of electrocatalysts from MOFs for electrochemical NH3 synthesis are presented, such as the evolution of investigation methods with artificial intelligence, innovation in synthetic methods of MOF-related catalysts, advancement of characterization techniques, and extended electrocatalytic reactions.

Tunable electronic and magnetic properties of planar and corrugated phases of two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks

The stability of two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their physical and chemical properties for potential applications are contentious. We herein investigated geometric, electronic and magnetic properties of the planar (p-) and corrugated (c-) phases of nickel ions with hexathiolbenzene (HTB)-based coordination nanosheets (Ni₃HTB). The c-Ni₃HTB is an antiferromagnetic semiconductor with a direct band gap of 0.33 eV, while the p-Ni₃HTB is a ferromagnetic metal. This indicates that the electronic and magnetic properties of c-Ni₃HTB and p-Ni₃HTB depend on their geometric pattern. Furthermore, we applied biaxial strain and molecular adsorption to control their electronic and magnetic properties. In addition, we have proved that the corrugated phase in some kinds of 2D MOFs is common. Our work not only demonstrates that the potential applications of 2D MOFs should be scrupulously explored but also offers a new platform to investigate the physical and chemical properties of 2D MOFs.

MOF-derived transition metal-based catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO: a mini review

The excessive emission of CO₂ derived from the consumption of fossil fuels has caused severe energy and environmental crises. The electrochemical reduction of CO₂ into value-added products such as CO not only reduces the CO₂ concentration in the atmosphere but also promotes sustainable development in chemical engineering. Thus, tremendous work has been devoted to developing highly efficient catalysts for the selective CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR). Recently, MOF-derived transition metal-based catalysts have shown great potential for the CO₂RR due to their various compositions, adjustable structures, competitive ability, and acceptable cost. Herein, based on our work, a mini-review is proposed for an MOF-derived transition metal-based catalyst for the electrochemical reduction of CO₂ to CO. The catalytic mechanism of the CO₂RR was first introduced, and then we summarized and analyzed the MOF-derived transition metal-based catalysts in terms of MOF-derived single atomic metal-based catalysts and MOF-derived metal nanoparticle-based catalysts. Finally, we present the challenges and perspectives for the subject topic. Hopefully, this review could be helpful and instructive for the design and application of MOF-derived transition metal-based catalysts for the selective CO₂RR to CO.

Oxidase mimicking Co/2Fe MOF included biosensor for sialic acid detection

A facile amperometric biosensor that included oxidase mimicking Co/2Fe metal-organic framework (MOF) for sialic acid (SA) detection was prepared. Amperometric SA biosensor was constructed on a gold screen-printed electrode via immobilization of Co/2Fe MOF and N-acetylneuraminic Acid Aldolase (NANA-Aldolase) enzyme, respectively. NANA-Aldolase enzyme converts free SA into pyruvate and N-acetyl-d-mannosamine. After this conversion, oxidase mimicking Co/2Fe bimetallic MOF converts pyruvate into acetylphosphate and O₂ into H₂O₂. Investigation of analytical characteristics resulted with the linear range of 0.02 mM-1.00 mM of SA concentration with limit of detection value of 0.026 mM. Sample application studies with developed SA biosensor were carried out with GD3 ganglioside and HeLa cancer cell lines which have high SA concentrations while A549 cell lines were also used as control group. Before detecting free SA, the bound SA was freed from SA sources where every step was monitored via electron impedance spectroscopy. Then, free SA was successfully detected with the amperometric SA biosensor and as a result, more practical and accurate system was developed.

2D Organic Materials: Status and Challenges

In the past few decades, 2D layer materials have gradually become a central focus in materials science owing to their uniquely layered structural qualities and good optoelectronic properties. However, in the development of 2D materials, several disadvantages, such as limited types of materials and the inability to synthesize large-scale materials, severely confine their application. Therefore, further exploration of new materials and preparation methods is necessary to meet technological developmental needs. Organic molecular materials have the advantage of being customizable. Therefore, if organic molecular and 2D materials are combined, the resulting 2D organic materials would have excellent optical and electrical properties. In addition, through this combination, the free design and large-scale synthesis of 2D materials can be realized in principle. Furthermore, 2D organic materials exhibit excellent properties and unique functionalities along with great potential for developing sensors, biomedicine, and electronics. In this review, 2D organic materials are divided into five categories. The preparation methods and material properties of each class of materials are also described in detail. Notably, to comprehensively understand each material's advantages, the latest research applications for each material are presented in detail and summarized. Finally, the future development and application prospects of 2D organic materials are briefly discussed.

Nanoparticle/metal-organic framework hybrid catalysts: elucidating the role of the MOF

Hybrid materials of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted significant attention because of the wide variety of attractive properties derived from the two components. In the last decade, the development of synthesis techniques for NP/MOF composites was particularly significant. In the field of catalysis in particular, various synergistic effects that make the composites attractive catalysts have been reported. However, the role of MOFs in the composite catalysts is still not well understood and is being elucidated. In this feature article, we focus on recent progress in NP/MOF composite catalysts, concentrating on the analysis of the interaction between NPs and MOFs and the reaction mechanisms, together with the synthetic techniques used for NP/MOF hybrid materials.

Cu(II)-Based Coordination Polymer as a Pristine Form Usable Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction: Experimental Evaluation and Theoretical Insights into Biomimetic Mechanistic Aspects

As the postsynthesis-processed metal-organic material-based catalysts for energy applications add additional cost to the whole process, the importance of developing synthesized usable pristine catalysts is quite evident. The present work reports a new Cu-based coordination polymer (Cu-CP) catalyst to be used in its pristine form for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) application. The catalyst was characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The Cu-CP exhibits admirable electrocatalytic ORR activity with an onset potential of 0.84 V versus RHE and a half wave potential of 0.69 V versus RHE. As revealed by the density functional theory-based computational mechanistic investigation of the electrocatalytic ORR process, the electrochemically reduced Cu(I) center binds to the molecular O₂ through an exergonic process (ΔG = -6.8 kcal/mol) and generates the Cu(II)-O₂^•- superoxo intermediate. Such superoxo intermediates are frequently encountered in the catalytic cycle of the Cu-containing metalloenzymes in their O₂ reduction reaction. This intermediate undergoes coupled proton and electron transfer processes to give OH^- in an alkaline medium involving H₂O₂ as the intermediate. The electrocatalytic performance of Cu-CP remained stable even up to 3000 cycles. Overall, the newly developed Cu-CP-based electrocatalyst holds promising potential for efficient biomimetic ORR reactivity, which opens new possibilities toward the development of robust coordination polymer-based electrocatalysts.

A review of synthesis, fabrication, and emerging biomedical applications of metal-organic frameworks

The overwhelming potential of porous coordination polymers (PCP), also known as Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), especially their nanostructures for various biomedical applications, have made these materials worth investigating for more applications and uses. MOFs unique structure has enabled them for most applications, particularly in biomedical and healthcare. A number of very informative review papers are available on the biomedical applications of MOFs for the reader's convenience. However, many of those reviews focus mainly on drug delivery applications, and no significant work has been reported on other MOFs for biomedical applications. This review aims to present a compact and highly informative global assessment of the recent developments in biomedical applications (excluding drug-delivery) of MOFs along with critical analysis. Researchers have recently adopted both synthetic and post-synthetic routes for the fabrication and modification of MOFs that have been discussed and analyzed. A critical review of the latest reports on the significant and exotic area of bio-sensing capabilities and applications of MOFs has been given in this study. In addition, other essential applications of MOFs, including photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, and antimicrobial activities, are also included. These recently grown emergent techniques and cancer treatment options have gained attention and require further investigations to achieve fruitful outcomes. MOF's role in these applications has been thoroughly discussed, along with future challenges and valuable suggestions for the research community that will help meet future demands.

Crystalline Porphyrazine-Linked Fused Aromatic Networks with High Proton Conductivity

Fused aromatic networks (FANs) have been studied in efforts to overcome the low physicochemical stability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), while preserving crystallinity. Herein, we describe the synthesis of a highly stable and crystalline FAN (denoted as Pz-FAN) using pyrazine-based building blocks to form porphyrazine (Pz) linkages via an irreversible reaction. Unlike most COFs and FANs, which are synthesized from two different building blocks, the new Pz-FAN is formed using a single building block by self-cyclotetramerization. Controlled and optimized reaction conditions result in a highly crystalline Pz-FAN with physicochemical stability. The newly prepared Pz-FAN displayed a high magnitude (1.16×10^-2  S cm^-1 ) of proton conductivity compared to other reported FANs and polymers. Finally, the Pz-FAN-based membrane was evaluated for a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), which showed maximum power and current densities of 192 mW cm^-2 and 481 mA cm^-2 , respectively.

Preparation, Characterization, and In Vitro Release of Curcumin-Loaded IRMOF-10 Nanoparticles and Investigation of Their Pro-Apoptotic Effects on Human Hepatoma HepG2 Cells

Curcumin (CUR) has a bright future in the treatment of cancer as a natural active ingredient with great potential. However, curcumin has a low solubility, which limits its clinical application. In this study, IRMOF-10 was created by the direct addition of triethylamine, CUR was loaded into IRMOF-10 using the solvent adsorption method, and the two were characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) methods, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. We also used the MTT method, 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining, the annexin V/PI method, cellular uptake, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) to perform a safety analysis and anticancer activity study of IRMOF-10 and CUR@IRMOF-10 on HepG2 cells. Our results showed that CUR@IRMOF-10 had a CUR load of 63.96%, with an obvious slow-release phenomenon. The CUR levels released under different conditions at 60 h were 33.58% (pH 7.4) and 31.86% (pH 5.5). Cell experiments proved that IRMOF-10 was biologically safe and could promote curcumin entering the nucleus, causing a series of reactions, such as an increase in reactive oxygen species and a decrease in the mitochondrial membrane potential, thereby leading to cell apoptosis. In summary, IRMOF-10 is an excellent drug carrier and CUR@IRMOF-10 is an effective anti-liver cancer sustained-release preparation.

Metal Ion-Directed Functional Metal-Phenolic Materials

Metal ions are ubiquitous in nature and play significant roles in assembling functional materials in fields spanning chemistry, biology, and materials science. Metal-phenolic materials are assembled from phenolic components in the presence of metal ions through the formation of metal-organic complexes. Alkali, alkali-earth, transition, and noble metal ions as well as metalloids interacting with phenolic building blocks have been widely exploited to generate diverse hybrid materials. Despite extensive studies on the synthesis of metal-phenolic materials, a comprehensive summary of how metal ions guide the assembly of phenolic compounds is lacking. A fundamental understanding of the roles of metal ions in metal-phenolic materials engineering will facilitate the assembly of materials with specific and functional properties. In this review, we focus on the diversity and function of metal ions in metal-phenolic material engineering and emerging applications. Specifically, we discuss the range of underlying interactions, including (i) cation-π, (ii) coordination, (iii) redox, and (iv) dynamic covalent interactions, and highlight the wide range of material properties resulting from these interactions. Applications (e.g., biological, catalytic, and environmental) and perspectives of metal-phenolic materials are also highlighted.

A turn-on NIR fluorescence sensor for gossypol based on Yb-based metal-organic framework

The development of analytical method for selective and sensitive detection of gossypol (Gsp), an extraction from the cotton plants, is important but still challenging in food safety and medical field. Herein, we reported a turn-on near infrared (NIR) fluorescence detection strategy for Gsp based on a metal-organic framework (MOF), QBA-Yb, which was prepared from 4,4'-(quinolone-5, 8-diyl) benzoate with Yb(NO₃)₃·5H₂O by solvothermal synthesis. The Gsp acted as another "antenna" to sensitize the luminescence of Yb³⁺, leading to the turn-on NIR emission upon 467 nm excitation. As Gsp concentration increased, the NIR emission at 973 nm enhanced gradually, thus enabling highly sensitive Gsp detection in a turn-on way. The experiment and theoretical calculation results revealed the presence of strong hydrogen bonds between Gsp molecules and the MOF skeleton. The developed QBA-Yb probe showed excellent characteristics for detection of Gsp molecules, accompanied by wide linear range (5-160 μg/mL), low detection limit (0.65 μg/mL) and short response time (within 10 min). We have further demonstrated that the QBA-Yb probe was successfully applied for the determination of Gsp in real samples of cottonseeds.

Micro/macrostructure and multicomponent design of catalysts by MOF-derived strategy: Opportunities for the application of nanomaterials-based advanced oxidation processes in wastewater treatment

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have demonstrated an effective wastewater treatment method. But the application of AOPs using nanomaterials as catalysts is challenged with a series of problems, including limited mass transfer, surface fouling, poor stability, and difficult recycling. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high tunability and ultrahigh porosity are emerging as excellent precursors for the delicate design of the structure/composition of catalysts and many MOF-derived catalysts with distinct physicochemical characteristics have shown optimized performance in various AOPs. Herein, to elucidate the structure-composition-performance relationship, a review on the performance optimization of MOF-derived catalysts to overcome the existing problems in AOPs by micro/macrostructure and multicomponent design is given. Impressively, MOF-derived strategy for the design of catalyst materials from the aspects of microstructure, macrostructure, and multicomponent (polymetallic, heteroatom doping, M/C hybrids, etc.) is firstly presented. Moreover, important advances of MOF-derived catalysts in the application of various AOPs (Fenton, persulfate-based AOPs, photocatalysis, electrochemical processes, hybrid AOPs) are summarized. The relationship between the unique micro/macrostructure and/or multicomponent features and performance optimization in mass transfer, catalytic efficiency, stability, and recyclability is clarified. Furthermore, the challenges and future work directions for the practical application of MOF-derived catalysts in AOPs for wastewater treatment are provided.

Structural and molecular properties of complexes of biomolecules and metal-organic frameworks: dispersion-corrected DFT treatment

Investigation of complexes of nanostructured materials and biomolecules has attracted much attention by various researchers as it can contribute to coherent growth and extended application of nanostructures in different technologies. In this research, following a comprehensive approach, we examined the interaction between different amino acids and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) at atomic scale using computational chemistry. For this purpose, we employed the density functional theory (DFT-D2) calculations to afford a molecular description of the interaction properties of the amino acids and MOF-5 by examining the interaction energy and the electronic structure of the amino acid/MOF complexes. We found strong interactions between the amino acids and MOF through their polar groups as well as aromatic rings in the gas phase. However, our findings were significantly different in solvent media, where water molecules prevent the amino acids from approaching the active sites of MOF, causing weak attractions between them. The evaluation of nature of interaction between the amino acids and MOF by the atoms-in-molecules (AIM) theory shows that the electrostatic attractions are the main force contributing to bond formation between the interacting entities. Furthermore, our DFT-PBE model of theory was validated against the comprehensive MP2 quantum level of theory.

Emerging MXene@Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids: Design Strategies toward Versatile Applications

Rapid progress on developing smart materials and design of hybrids is motivated by pressing challenges associated with energy crisis and environmental remediation. While emergence of versatile classes of nanomaterials has been fascinating, the real excitement lies in the design of hybrid materials with tunable properties. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are the key materials for gas sorption and electrochemical applications, but their sustainability is challenged by limited chemical stability, poor electrical conductivity, and intricate, inaccessible pores. Despite tremendous efforts towards improving the stability of MOF materials, little progress has made researchers inclined toward developing hybrid materials. MXenes, a family of two-dimensional transition-metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides, are known for their compositional versatility and formation of a range of structures with rich surface chemistry. Hybridization of MOFs with functional layered MXene materials may be beneficial if the host structure provides appropriate interactions for stabilizing and improving the desired properties. Recent efforts have focused on integrating Ti₃C₂T_x and V₂CT_x MXenes with MOFs to result in hybrid materials with augmented electrochemical and physicochemical properties, widening the scope for emerging applications. This review discusses the potential design strategies of MXene@MOF hybrids, attributes of tunable properties in the resulting hybrids, and their applications in water treatment, sensing, electrochemical energy storage, smart textiles, and electrocatalysis. Comprehensive discussions on the recent efforts on rapidly evolving MXene@MOF materials for various applications and potential future directions are highlighted.

Highly Selective and Sensitive Detection of Volatile Sulfur Compounds by Ionically Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks

High selectivity to specific analyte is essential for chemical sensors but difficult to achieve. For most chemical sensors, although the response to the target analyte can be more significant than interference analytes, they still show obvious responses to the interference analytes. Here, highly selective chemical sensors are developed with negligible responses to other interference vapors. Instead of the widely investigated electronically conductive metal-organic frameworks (EC-MOFs), ionically conductive MOFs (IC-MOFs) are used as the sensing materials, and the unique interaction between the ion charge carrier and the analyte is utilized to achieve high sensing selectivity. Through the modulation of the metal nodes (Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Mg) and organic ligands (H₂ TCPP, H₂ THPP, H₄ BTEC), sensor arrays based on a set of IC-MOFs are fabricated and achieve highly selective detection toward volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). H₂ S and CH₃ SH can be selectively detected at concentrations down to 1 ppb and 1 ppm, respectively. The facile preparation and low cost endow the device with disposability. These results suggest new approaches for the development of highly selective chemical sensors.

Covalent Organic Framework (COF)-Based Hybrids for Electrocatalysis: Recent Advances and Perspectives

Developing highly efficient electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion and environment purification has long been a research priority in the past 15 years. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as a burgeoning family of organic materials internally connected by covalent bonds and have been explored as promising candidates in electrocatalysis. The reticular geometry of COFs can provide an excellent platform for precise incorporation of the active sites in the framework, and the fine-tuning hierarchical porous architectures can enable efficient accessibility of the active sites and mass transportation. Considerable advances are made in rational design and controllable fabrication of COF-based organic-inorganic hybrids, that containing organic frameworks and inorganic electroactive species to induce novel physicochemical properties, and take advantage of the synergistic effect for targeted electrocatalysis with the hybrid system. Branches of COF-based hybrids containing a diversity form of metals, metal compounds, as well as metal-free carbons have come to the fore as highly promising electrocatalysts. This review aims to provide a systematic and profound understanding of the design principles behind the COF-based hybrids for electrocatalysis applications. Particularly, the structure-activity relationship and the synergistic effects in the COF-based hybrid systems are discussed to shed some light on the future design of next-generation electrocatalysts.

MOF-Templated Sulfurization of Atomically Dispersed Manganese Catalysts Facilitating Electroreduction of CO2 to CO

To reach a carbon-neutral future, electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR) has proven to be a strong candidate for the next-generation energy system. Among potential materials, single-atom catalysts (SACs) serve as a model to study the mechanism behind the reduction of CO2 to CO, given their well-defined active metal centers and structural simplicity. Moreover, using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as supports to anchor and stabilize central metal atoms, the common concern, metal aggregation, for SACs can be addressed well. Furthermore, with their turnability and designability, MOF-derived SACs can also extend the scope of research on SACs for the eCO2RR. Herein, we synthesize sulfurized MOF-derived Mn SACs to study effects of the S dopant on the eCO2RR. Using complementary characterization techniques, the metal moiety of the sulfurized MOF-derived Mn SACs (MnSA/SNC) is identified as MnN3S1. Compared with its non-sulfur-modified counterpart (MnSA/NC), the MnSA/SNC provides uniformly superior activity to produce CO. Specifically, a nearly 30% enhancement of Faradaic efficiency (F.E.) in CO production is observed, and the highest F.E. of approximately 70% is identified at -0.45 V. Through operando spectroscopic characterization, the probing results reveal that the overall enhancement of CO production on the MnSA/SNC is possibly caused by the S atom in the local MnN3S1 moiety, as the sulfur atom may induce the formation of S-O bonding to stabilize the critical intermediate, *COOH, for CO2-to-CO. Our results provide novel design insights into the field of SACs for the eCO2RR.

Construction of Stable Helical Metal-Organic Frameworks with a Conformationally Rigid "Concave Ligand"

A helical metal-organic framework was prepared by using a conformationally rigid tetratopic benzoic acid ligand with binding units pointing toward each other (concave ligand). To avoid the obvious intramolecular interactions between binding units, matching spacing groups were applied to introduce atropic repulsion, thereby allowing the formation of extended frameworks for the first time. With this new ligand design, a helical-shaped MOF with significantly improved air and moisture stability was successfully prepared, thus providing a new strategy for ligand design toward porous material constructions.

Investigation on the optical nonlinearity of the layered magnesium-mediated metal organic framework (Mg-MOF-74)

The wavelength-related optical nonlinearities of few-layer Mg-MOF-74 nanosheets were investigated in the wavelength region around 1.08, 1.94, and 2.85 μm by the closed aperture Z-scan, open aperture Z-scan and I-scan method. Under the excitation of 100-μJ laser pulses, the nonlinear refractive index (n₂) of -7.7 ± 2.6, -131 ± 5 and 4.9 ± 0.2 cm²/W were obtained, respectively. The wavelength-related optical nonlinearity of the Mg-MOF-74 nanosheet was also investigated. In 2.85 μm wavelength region, the Mg-MOF-74 nanosheets shows a stable saturable absorption property with a modulation depth of 8% and a saturation intensity of 170 mJ/cm². In the 1.08 and 1.94 μm wavelength regions, we can observe that the Mg-MOF-74 transits from saturable absorption regime to reverse saturable absorption regime with the increasing incident laser intensity. Employed as a saturable absorber in a Er:Lu₂O₃ laser, Mg-MOF-74 nanosheet shows a thickness-related laser modulation performance. The shortest laser pulse of 284-ns was achieved under a repetition rate of 116 kHz with a 6-nm-thick Mg-MOF-74 nanosheet, which corresponds to a pulse energy of 3.2 µJ and a peak power of 11.4 W.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Hierarchically Porous Materials: Synthesis and Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely recognized as one of the most fascinating classes of materials from science and engineering perspectives, benefiting from their high porosity and well-defined and tailored structures and components at the atomic level. Although their intrinsic micropores endow size-selective capability and high surface area, etc., the narrow pores limit their applications toward diffusion-control and large-size species involved processes. In recent years, the construction of hierarchically porous MOFs (HP-MOFs), MOF-based hierarchically porous composites, and MOF-based hierarchically porous derivatives has captured widespread interest to extend the applications of conventional MOF-based materials. In this Review, the recent advances in the design, synthesis, and functional applications of MOF-based hierarchically porous materials are summarized. Their structural characters toward various applications, including catalysis, gas storage and separation, air filtration, sewage treatment, sensing and energy storage, have been demonstrated with typical reports. The comparison of HP-MOFs with traditional porous materials (e.g., zeolite, porous silica, carbons, metal oxides, and polymers), subsisting challenges, as well as future directions in this research field, are also indicated.

Direct Pyrolysis of a Manganese-Triazolate Metal-Organic Framework into Air-Stable Manganese Nitride Nanoparticles

Although metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are being widely used to derive functional nanomaterials through pyrolysis, the actual mechanisms involved remain unclear. In the limited studies to date, elemental metallic species are found to be the initial products, which limits the variety of MOF-derived nanomaterials. Here, the pyrolysis of a manganese triazolate MOF is examined carefully in terms of phase transformation, reaction pathways, and morphology evolution in different conditions. Surprisingly, the formation of metal is not detected when manganese triazolate is pyrolyzed in an oxygen-free environment. Instead, a direct transformation into nanoparticles of manganese nitride, Mn2N x embedded in N-doped graphitic carbon took place. The electrically conductive Mn2N x nanoparticles show much better air stability than bulk samples and exhibit promising electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen reduction reaction. The findings on pyrolysis mechanisms expand the potential of MOF as a precursor to derive more functional nanomaterials.

A Review on Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Porous Carbon-Based Novel Microwave Absorption Materials

The development of microwave absorption materials (MAMs) is a considerable important topic because our living space is crowed with electromagnetic wave which threatens human's health. And MAMs are also used in radar stealth for protecting the weapons from being detected. Many nanomaterials were studied as MAMs, but not all of them have the satisfactory performance. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted tremendous attention owing to their tunable chemical structures, diverse properties, large specific surface area and uniform pore distribution. MOF can transform to porous carbon (PC) which is decorated with metal species at appropriate pyrolysis temperature. However, the loss mechanism of pure MOF-derived PC is often relatively simple. In order to further improve the MA performance, the MOFs coupled with other loss materials are a widely studied method. In this review, we summarize the theories of MA, the progress of different MOF-derived PC‑based MAMs, tunable chemical structures incorporated with dielectric loss or magnetic loss materials. The different MA performance and mechanisms are discussed in detail. Finally, the shortcomings, challenges and perspectives of MOF-derived PC‑based MAMs are also presented. We hope this review could provide a new insight to design and fabricate MOF-derived PC-based MAMs with better fundamental understanding and practical application.

Metal-Organic Frameworks: Synthetic Methods and Potential Applications

Metal-organic frameworks represent a porous class of materials that are build up from metal ions or oligonuclear metallic complexes and organic ligands. They can be considered as sub-class of coordination polymers and can be extended into one-dimension, two-dimensions, and three-dimensions. Depending on the size of the pores, MOFs are divided into nanoporous, mesoporous, and macroporous items. The latter two are usually amorphous. MOFs display high porosity, a large specific surface area, and high thermal stability due to the presence of coordination bonds. The pores can incorporate neutral molecules, such as solvent molecules, anions, and cations, depending on the overall charge of the MOF, gas molecules, and biomolecules. The structural diversity of the framework and the multifunctionality of the pores render this class of materials as candidates for a plethora of environmental and biomedical applications and also as catalysts, sensors, piezo/ferroelectric, thermoelectric, and magnetic materials. In the present review, the synthetic methods reported in the literature for preparing MOFs and their derived materials, and their potential applications in environment, energy, and biomedicine are discussed.

Supramolecular Cu(ii)–dipyridyl frameworks featuring weakly coordinating dodecaborate dianions for selective gas separation

Several novel weakly coordinating dodecaborate anion hybrid supramolecular Cu(ii)–dipyridyl frameworks were synthesized and characterized by single crystal analysis with one potential for selective C₂H₂/C₂H₄ and C₂H₂/CO₂ separation.
