Topochemical-like bandgap regulation engineering: A bismuth thiooxide nanocatalyst for breast cancer phototherapy

The physical property tuning of nanomaterials is of great importance in energy, medicine, environment, catalysis, and other fields. Topochemical synthesis of nanomaterials can achieve precise control of material properties. Here, we synthesized a kind of element-doped bismuth-based nanomaterial (BOS) by topochemical-like synthesis and used it for the phototherapy of tumors. In this study, we employed bismuth fluoride nanoflowers as a template and fabricated element-doped bismuth oxide nanoflowers by reduction conditions. The product is consistent with the precursor in crystal structure and nanomorphology, realizing topochemical-like synthesis under mild conditions. BOS can generate reactive oxygen species, consume glutathione, and perform photothermal conversion under 730 nm light irradiation. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that BOS could suppress tumor growth by inducing apoptosis and ferroptosis through phototherapy. Therefore, this study offers a general regulation method for tuning the physical properties of nanomaterials by using a topochemical-like synthesis strategy.

Immunomodulatory nanomedicine for osteoporosis: Current practices and emerging prospects

Osteoporosis results from the disruption of the balance between bone resorption and bone formation. However, classical anti-osteoporosis drugs exhibit several limitations in clinical applications, such as multiple adverse reactions and poor therapeutic effects. Therefore, there is an urgent need for alternative treatment strategies. With the evolution of immunomodulatory nanomedicine, a variety of nanomaterials have been designed for anti-osteoporosis treatment, offering prospects of minimal adverse reactions, enhanced bone induction, and high osteogenic activity. This review initially provides a brief overview of the fundamental principles of bone reconstruction, current osteogenic clinical methods in osteoporosis treatment, and the significance of osteogenic-angiogenic coupling, laying the groundwork for understanding the pathophysiology and therapeutics of osteoporosis. Subsequently, the article emphasizes the relationship between bone immunity and osteogenesis-angiogenesis coupling and provides a detailed analysis of the application of immunomodulatory nanomedicines in the treatment of osteoporosis, including various types of nanomaterials and their integration with carrier biomaterials. Importantly, we discuss the potential of some emerging strategies in immunomodulatory nanomedicine for osteoporosis treatment. This review introduces the innovative applications of immunomodulatory nanomedicine in the treatment of osteoporosis, aiming to serve as a reference for the application of immunomodulatory nanomedicine strategies in osteoporosis treatment. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Osteoporosis, as one of the most prevalent skeletal disorders, poses a significant threat to public health. To date, conventional anti-osteoporosis strategies have been limited in efficacy and plagued with numerous side effects. Fortunately, with the advancement of research in osteoimmunology and nanomedicine, strategies integrating these two fields show great promise in combating osteoporosis. Nanomedicine with immunomodulatory properties exhibits enhanced efficiency, prolonged effectiveness, and increased safety. However, as of now, there exists no comprehensive review amalgamating immunomodulation with nanomedicine to delineate the progress of immunomodulatory nanomedicine in osteoporosis treatment, as well as the future direction of this strategy.

Green Synthesis and Biosafety Assessment of MXene

The rise of MXene-based materials with fascinating physical and chemical properties has attracted wide attention in the field of biomedicine, because it can be exploited to regulate a variety of biological processes. The biomedical applications of MXene are still in its infancy, nevertheless, the comprehensive evaluation of MXene's biosafety is desperately needed. In this review, the composition and the synthetic methods of MXene materials are first introduced from the view of biosafety. The evaluation of the interaction between MXene and cells, as well as the safety of different forms of MXene applied in vivo are then discussed. This review provides a basic understanding of MXene biosafety and may bring new inspirations to the future applications of MXene-based materials in biomedicine.

Bionanoengineered 2D monoelemental selenene for piezothrombolysis

Thrombosis-related diseases represent the leading causes of disability or death worldwide. However, conventional thrombolytic therapies are subjected to narrow therapeutic window, short circulation half-life and bleeding. Herein, we rationally design and develop a safe and efficient nonpharmaceutical thrombolysis strategy based on a specific piezocatalytic effect arising from platelet membrane (PM)-conjugated two-dimensional (2D) piezoelectric selenene, Se-PM nanosheets (NSs). The 2D selenene is fabricated from nonlayered bulk selenium powder by a facile liquid-phase exfoliation method, and the PM conjugation confers selenene with the distinct thrombus-homing feature. Under ultrasonic activation, the piezoelectric characteristic of selenene triggers electrons and holes separation, resulting in generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by reacting with surrounding H2O and O2 in the thrombosis microenvironment for thrombolysis. Both systematic in vitro and in vivo assessments demonstrate that the biocompatible Se-PM NSs efficiently degrade erythrocytes, fibrin and artificial blood clots under ultrasound irradiation. Compared to the clinical thrombolytic drug urokinase plasminogen activator, the engineered Se-PM NSs possess excellent thrombolytic efficacy by single treatment in the tail thrombosis animal model without bleeding risk. The engineered Se-PM nanoplatform marks an exciting jumping-off point for research into the application of piezocatalysis in clinical treatment of thrombosis.

Understanding the Behaviors of Plasmon-Induced Hot Carriers and Their Applications in Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis driven by plasmon-induced hot carriers has been gaining increasing attention. Recent studies have demonstrated that plasmon-induced hot carriers can directly participate in photocatalytic reactions, leading to great enhancement in solar energy conversion efficiency, by improving the catalytic activity or changing selectivity. Nevertheless, the utilization efficiency of hot carriers remains unsatisfactory. Therefore, how to correctly understand the generation and transfer process of hot carriers, as well as accurately differentiate between the possible mechanisms, have become a key point of attention. In this review, we overview the fundamental processes and mechanisms underlying hot carrier generation and transport, followed by highlighting the importance of hot carrier monitoring methods and related photocatalytic reactions. Furthermore, possible strategies for the further characterization of plasmon-induced hot carriers and boosting their utilization efficiency have been proposed. We hope that a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental behaviors of hot carriers can aid in designing more efficient photocatalysts for plasmon-induced photocatalytic reactions.

Photothermal Conversion Perylene-Based Metal-Organic Framework with Panchromatic Absorption Bandwidth across the Visible to Near-Infrared

Recently, facilely designable metal-organic frameworks have gained attention in the construction of photothermal conversion materials. Nonetheless, most of the previously reported photothermal conversion metal-organic frameworks exhibit limited light absorption capabilities. In this work, a distinctive metal-organic framework with heterogeneous periodic alternate spatial arrangements of metal-oxygen clusters and perylene-based derivative molecules was prepared by in situ synthesis. The building blocks in this inimitable structure behave as both electron donors and electron acceptors, giving rise to the significant inherent charge transfer in this crystalline material, resulting in a narrow band gap with excellent panchromatic absorption, with the ground state being the charge transfer state. Moreover, it can retain excellent air-, photo-, and water-stability in the solid state. The excellent stability and broad light absorption characteristics enable the effective realization of near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion, including infrequent NIR-II photothermal conversion, in this perylene-based metal-organic framework.

Ultrathin 2D As2Se3 Nanosheets for Photothermal-Triggered Cancer Immunotherapy

Arsenic trioxide (As2O3) has achieved groundbreaking success in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). However, its toxic side effects seriously limit its therapeutic application in the treatment of solid tumors. To detoxify the severe side effects of arsenic, herein we synthesized innovative 2D ultrathin As2Se3 nanosheets (As2Se3 NSs) with synergistic photothermal-triggered immunotherapy effects. As2Se3 NSs are biocompatible and biodegradable under physiological conditions and can release As(III) and Se(0). Furthermore, selenium increases the immunomodulatory efficacy of arsenic treatments, facilitating reprogramming of the tumor microenvironment by As2Se3 NSs by enhancing the infiltration of natural killer cells and effector tumor-specific CD8+ T cells. The synergistic combination of photothermal therapy and immunotherapy driven by As2Se3 NSs via a simple but effective all-in-one strategy achieved efficient anticancer effects, addressing the key limitations of As2O3 for solid tumor treatment. This work demonstrates not only the great potential of selenium for detoxifying arsenic but also the application of 2D As2Se3 nanosheets for cancer therapy.

Silicon-containing nanomedicine and biomaterials: materials chemistry, multi-dimensional design, and biomedical application

The invention of silica-based bioactive glass in the late 1960s has sparked significant interest in exploring a wide range of silicon-containing biomaterials from the macroscale to the nanoscale. Over the past few decades, these biomaterials have been extensively explored for their potential in diverse biomedical applications, considering their remarkable bioactivity, excellent biocompatibility, facile surface functionalization, controllable synthesis, etc. However, to expedite the clinical translation and the unexpected utilization of silicon-composed nanomedicine and biomaterials, it is highly desirable to achieve a thorough comprehension of their characteristics and biological effects from an overall perspective. In this review, we provide a comprehensive discussion on the state-of-the-art progress of silicon-composed biomaterials, including their classification, characteristics, fabrication methods, and versatile biomedical applications. Additionally, we highlight the multi-dimensional design of both pure and hybrid silicon-composed nanomedicine and biomaterials and their intrinsic biological effects and interactions with biological systems. Their extensive biomedical applications span from drug delivery and bioimaging to therapeutic interventions and regenerative medicine, showcasing the significance of their rational design and fabrication to meet specific requirements and optimize their theranostic performance. Additionally, we offer insights into the future prospects and potential challenges regarding silicon-composed nanomedicine and biomaterials. By shedding light on these exciting research advances, we aspire to foster further progress in the biomedical field and drive the development of innovative silicon-composed nanomedicine and biomaterials with transformative applications in biomedicine.

Recent Advances in Photothermal Therapy at Near-Infrared-II Based on 2D MXenes

The use of photothermal therapy (PTT) with the near-infrared II region (NIR-II: 1000-1700 nm) is expected to be a powerful cancer treatment strategy. It retains the noninvasive nature and excellent temporal and spatial controllability of the traditional PTT, and offers significant advantages in terms of tissue penetration depth, background noise, and the maximum permissible exposure standards for skin. MXenes, transition-metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides are emerging inorganic nanomaterials with natural biocompatibility, wide spectral absorption, and a high photothermal conversion efficiency. The PTT of MXenes in the NIR-II region not only provides a valuable reference for exploring photothermal agents that respond to NIR-II in 2D inorganic nanomaterials, but also be considered as a promising biomedical therapy. First, the synthesis methods of 2D MXenes are briefly summarized, and the laser light source, mechanism of photothermal conversion, and evaluation criteria of photothermal performance are introduced. Second, the latest progress of PTT based on 2D MXenes in NIR-II are reviewed, including titanium carbide (Ti3 C2 ), niobium carbide (Nb2 C), and molybdenum carbide (Mo2 C). Finally, the main problems in the PTT application of 2D MXenes to NIR-II and future research directions are discussed.

Recent Advances of Emerging Metal-Containing Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials in Tumor Theranostics

In recent years, metal-containing two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, among various 2D nanomaterials have attracted widespread attention because of their unique physical and chemical properties, especially in the fields of biomedical applications. Firstly, the review provides a brief introduction to two types of metal-containing 2D nanomaterials, based on whether metal species take up the major skeleton of the 2D nanomaterials. After this, the synthetical approaches are summarized, focusing on two strategies similar to other 2D nanomaterials, top-down and bottom-up methods. Then, the performance and evaluation of these 2D nanomaterials when applied to cancer therapy are discussed in detail. The specificity of metal-containing 2D nanomaterials in physics and optics makes them capable of killing cancer cells in a variety of ways, such as photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, sonodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy and so on. Besides, the integrated platform of diagnosis and treatment and the clinical translatability through metal-containing 2D nanomaterials is also introduced in this review. In the summary and perspective section, advanced rational design, challenges and promising clinical contributions to cancer therapy of these emerging metal-containing 2D nanomaterials are discussed.

Peptide-graphene logic sensing system for dual-mode detection of exosomes, molecular information processing and protection

Peptides with highly sequence-dependent recognition, assembly, and encoding abilities can perform functions similar to DNA or even better, such as biosensing, molecular information processing, coding, or storage. However, the combination of versatile peptides and 2D materials are rarely used for multipurpose integrated applications, including biosensing, information processing and security. Herein, peptide-graphene sensing system was comprehensively used for dual-signal sensing of tumor-derived exosomes (TDEs), logic computing, and information protection. The system used fluorescent-labeled CD63-binding peptide CP05 and graphene oxide (GO) to selectively detect CD63 and TDEs by fluorescence and resonance light scattering. From three levels such as matter, energy, and information analysis, the matter and energy changes in GO-CP05 peptide sensing system were transformed into valuable information, which achieve the dual-mode quantitative detection of TDEs and its marker CD63, and the actual serum analysis. This matter-energy interaction network was also informationized, and utilized for parallel and batch logic computing, two kinds of molecular crypto-steganography (based on peptide sequence and Boolean logic relationships), which facilitates development of intelligent sensing and advanced information technology. This work not only provides a new method for sensitive detection of important disease markers, but also provides ideas for integrating molecular sensing and informatization to open molecular digitization.

Near-Infrared-II-Activatable Self-Assembled Manganese Porphyrin-Gold Heterostructures for Photoacoustic Imaging-Guided Sonodynamic-Augmented Photothermal/Photodynamic Therapy

Porphyrins and their derivatives are widely used as photosensitizers and sonosensitizers in tumor treatment. Nevertheless, their poor water solubility and low chemical stability reduce their singlet oxygen (1O2) yield and, consequently, their photodynamic therapy (PDT) and sonodynamic therapy (SDT) efficiency. Although strategies for porphyrin molecule assembly have been developed to augment 1O2 generation, there is scope for further improving PDT and SDT efficiencies. Herein, we synthesized ordered manganese porphyrin (SM) nanoparticles with well-defined self-assembled metalloporphyrin networks that enabled efficient energy transfer for enhanced photocatalytic and sonocatalytic activity in 1O2 production. Subsequently, Au nanoparticles were grown in situ on the SM surface by anchoring the terminal alkynyl of porphyrin to form plasmonic SMA heterostructures, which showed the excellent near-infrared-II (NIR-II) region absorption and photothermal properties, and facilitated electron-hole pair separation and transfer. With the modification of hyaluronic acid (HA), SMAH heterostructure nanocomposites exhibited good water solubility and were actively targeted to cancer cells. Under NIR-II light and ultrasound (US) irradiation, the SMAH generates hyperthermia, and a large amount of 1O2, inducing cancer cell damage. Both in vitro and in vivo studies confirmed that the SMAH nanocomposites effectively suppressed tumor growth by decreasing GSH levels in SDT-augmented PDT/PTT. Moreover, by utilizing the strong absorption in the NIR-II window, SMAH nanocomposites can achieve NIR-II photoacoustic imaging-guided combined cancer treatment. This work provides a paradigm for enhancing the 1O2 yield of metalloporphyrins to improve the synergistic therapeutic effect of SDT/PDT/PTT.

MXene and Xene: promising frontier beyond graphene in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine

The emergence of 2D nanomaterials (2D NMs), which was initiated by the isolation of graphene (G) in 2004, revolutionized various biomedical applications, including bioimaging and -sensing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering, owing to their unique physicochemical and biological properties. Building on the success of G, a novel class of monoelemental 2D NMs, known as Xenes, has recently emerged, offering distinct advantages in the fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. In this review, we focus on the comparison of G and Xene materials for use in fabricating tissue engineering scaffolds. After a brief introduction to the basic physicochemical properties of these materials, recent representative studies are classified in terms of the engineered tissue, i.e., bone, cartilage, neural, muscle, and skin tissues. We analyze several methods of improving the clinical potential of Xene-laden scaffolds using state-of-the-art fabrication technologies and innovative biomaterials. Despite the considerable advantages of Xene materials, critical concerns, such as biocompatibility, biodistribution and regulatory challenges, should be considered. This review and collaborative efforts should advance the field of Xene-based tissue engineering and enable innovative, effective solutions for use in future tissue regeneration.

Graphene oxide as novel vaccine adjuvant

To improve antigen immunogenicity and promote long-lasting immunity, vaccine formulations have been appropriately supplemented with adjuvants. Graphene has been found to enhance the presentation of antigens to CD8+ T cells, as well as stimulating innate immune responses and inflammatory factors. Its properties, such as large surface area, water stability, and high aspect ratio, make it a suitable candidate for delivering biological substances. Graphene-based nanomaterials have recently attracted significant attention as a new type of vaccine adjuvants due to their potential role in the activation of immune responses. Due to the limited functionality of some approved human adjuvants for use, the development of new all-purpose adjuvants is urgently required. Research on the immunological and biomedical use of graphene oxide (GO) indicates that these nanocarriers possess excellent physicochemical properties, acceptable biocompatibility, and a high capacity for drug loading. Graphene-based nanocarriers also could improve the function of some immune cells such as dendritic cells and macrophages through specific signaling pathways. However, GO injection can lead to significant oxidative stress and inflammation. Various surface functionalization protocols have been employed to reduce possible adverse effects of GO, such as aggregation of GO in biological liquids and induce cell death. Furthermore, these modifications enhance the properties of functionalized-GO's qualities, making it an excellent carrier and adjuvant. Shedding light on different physicochemical and structural properties of GO and its derivatives has led to their application in various therapeutic and drug delivery fields. In this review, we have endeavored to elaborate on different aspects of GO.

Ultrasonic neural regulation over two-dimensional graphene analog biomaterials: Enhanced PC12 cell differentiation under diverse ultrasond excitation

Two-dimensional (2D) biomaterials, with unique planar topology and quantum effect, have been widely recognized as a versatile nanoplatform for bioimaging, drug delivery and tissue engineering. However, during the complex application of nerve repair, in which inflammatory microenvironment control is imperative, the gentle manipulation and trigger of 2D biomaterials with inclusion and diversity is still challenging. Herein, inspired by the emerging clinical progress of ultrasound neuromodulation, we systematically studied ultrasound-excited 2D graphene analogues (graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carbon nitride) to explore their feasibility, accessibility, and adjustability for ultrasound-induced nerve repair in vitro. Quantitative observation of cell differentiation morphology demonstrates that PC12 cells added with rGO show the best compatibility and differentiation performance under the general ultrasound mode (0.5 w/cm2, 2 min/day) compared with graphene, graphene oxide and carbon nitride. Furthermore, the general condition can be improved by using a higher intensity of 0.7 w/cm2, but it cannot go up further. Later, ultrasonic frequency and duty cycle conditions were investigated to demonstrate the unique and remarkable inclusion and diversity of ultrasound over conventional electrical and surgical means. The pulse waveform with power of 1 MHz and duty cycle of 50 % may be even better, while the 3 MHz and 100 % duty cycle may not work. Overall, various graphene analog materials can be regarded as biosafe and accessible in both fundamental research and clinical ultrasound therapy, even for radiologists without material backgrounds. The enormous potential of diverse and personalized 2D biomaterials-based therapies can be expected to provide a new mode of ultrasound neuromodulation.

Synergized photothermal therapy and magnetic field induced hyperthermia via bismuthene for lung cancer combinatorial treatment

Thanks to its intrinsic properties, two-dimensional (2D) bismuth (bismuthene) can serve as a multimodal nanotherapeutic agent for lung cancer acting through multiple mechanisms, including photothermal therapy (PTT), magnetic field-induced hyperthermia (MH), immunogenic cell death (ICD), and ferroptosis. To investigate this possibility, we synthesized bismuthene from the exfoliation of 3D layered bismuth, prepared through a facile method that we developed involving surfactant-assisted chemical reduction, with a specific focus on improving its magnetic properties. The bismuthene nanosheets showed high in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer activity after simultaneous light and magnetic field exposure in lung adenocarcinoma cells. Only when light and magnetic field are applied together, we can achieve the highest anti-cancer activity compared to the single treatment groups. We have further shown that ICD-dependent mechanisms were involved during this combinatorial treatment strategy. Beyond ICD, bismuthene-based PTT and MH also resulted in an increase in ferroptosis mechanisms both in vitro and in vivo, in addition to apoptotic pathways. Finally, hemolysis in human whole blood and a wide variety of assays in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells indicated that the bismuthene nanosheets were biocompatible and did not alter immune function. These results showed that bismuthene has the potential to serve as a biocompatible platform that can arm multiple therapeutic approaches against lung cancer.

Nanomaterials-Enabled Physicochemical Antibacterial Therapeutics: Toward the Antibiotic-Free Disinfections

Bacterial infection continues to be an increasing global health problem with the most widely accepted treatment paradigms restricted to antibiotics. However, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics have triggered multidrug resistance of bacteria, frustrating therapeutic outcomes, and leading to higher mortality rates. Even worse, the tendency of bacteria to form biofilms on living and nonliving surfaces further increases the difficulty in confronting bacteria because the extracellular matrix can act as a robust barrier to prevent the penetration of antibiotics and resist environmental damage. As a result, the inability to eliminate bacteria and biofilms often leads to persistent infection, implant failure, and device damage. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to develop alternative antimicrobial agents while avoiding the generation of bacterial resistance to prevent the large-scale growth of bacterial resistance. In recent years, nano-antibacterial materials have played a vital role in the antibacterial field because of their excellent physical and chemical properties. This review focuses on new physicochemical antibacterial strategies and versatile antibacterial nanomaterials, especially the mechanism and types of 2D antibacterial nanomaterials. In addition, this advanced review provides guidance on the development direction of antibiotic-free disinfections in the antibacterial field in the future.

Liquid metal catalyzed chemical vapor deposition towards morphology engineering of 2D epitaxial heterostructures

The past decades have witnessed significant advancements in the growth of two-dimensional (2D) materials, offering a wide range of potential applications in the fields of electronics, optoelectronics, energy storage, sensors, catalysis, and biomedical treatments. Epitaxial heterostructures based on 2D materials, including vertical heterostructures, lateral structures, and superlattices, have emerged as novel material systems to manipulate the intrinsic properties and unlock new functionalities. Therefore, the development of controllable preparation methods for tailored epitaxial heterostructures serves as a fundamental basis for extensive property investigation and further application exploration. However, this pursuit presents formidable challenges due to the incomplete understanding of growth mechanisms and limited designable strategies. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is deemed as a promising and versatile platform for the controlled synthesis of 2D materials, especially with regard to achieving lattice matching, a critical factor in epitaxial growth. Consequently, CVD holds potential to overcome these hurdles. In this Feature Article, we present our recent breakthroughs in the controllable preparation of 2D epitaxial heterostructures using CVD. Our focus revolves around the processes of morphology engineering, interface engineering, size and density engineering, and striking the delicate balance between growth and etching. Using molten metals or alloys as primary catalysts, we have achieved remarkable control over the fabrication of graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) super-ordered arrays, enabled multistage etching of graphene/hBN heterostructures, and successfully realized the construction of graphene/MXene heterostructures. Furthermore, our research endeavors encompass both bottom-up and top-down fabrication methods, offering a novel perspective on the synthesis of 2D epitaxial heterostructures. The resulting products hold immense potential for enhancing the efficiency of critical reactions such as oxygen reduction, CO2 reduction, and hydrogen evolution reactions. By presenting our methodologies for obtaining 2D epitaxial heterostructures through CVD, we aspire to inspire fellow researchers in this field to devise more feasible and controllable fabrication techniques while also fostering the exploration of diverse heterostructure configurations. Together, these advancements will undoubtedly pave the way for further breakthroughs in atomic manufacturing and novel applications.

Current Advances of Atomically Dispersed Metal-Centered Nanozymes for Tumor Diagnosis and Therapy

Nanozymes, which combine enzyme-like catalytic activity and the biological properties of nanomaterials, have been widely used in biomedical fields. Single-atom nanozymes (SANs) with atomically dispersed metal centers exhibit excellent biological catalytic activity due to the maximization of atomic utilization efficiency, unique metal coordination structures, and metal-support interaction, and their structure-activity relationship can also be clearly investigated. Therefore, they have become an emerging alternative to natural enzymes. This review summarizes the examples of nanocatalytic therapy based on SANs in tumor diagnosis and treatment in recent years, providing an overview of material classification, activity modulation, and therapeutic means. Next, we will delve into the therapeutic mechanism of SNAs in the tumor microenvironment and the advantages of synergistic multiple therapeutic modalities (e.g., chemodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, sonothermal therapy, and gas therapy). Finally, this review proposes the main challenges and prospects for the future development of SANs in cancer diagnosis and therapy.

Reactive X (where X = O, N, S, C, Cl, Br, and I) species nanomedicine

Reactive oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, carbonyl, chlorine, bromine, and iodine species (RXS, where X = O, N, S, C, Cl, Br, and I) have important roles in various normal physiological processes and act as essential regulators of cell metabolism; their inherent biological activities govern cell signaling, immune balance, and tissue homeostasis. However, an imbalance between RXS production and consumption will induce the occurrence and development of various diseases. Due to the considerable progress of nanomedicine, a variety of nanosystems that can regulate RXS has been rationally designed and engineered for restoring RXS balance to halt the pathological processes of different diseases. The invention of radical-regulating nanomaterials creates the possibility of intriguing projects for disease treatment and promotes advances in nanomedicine. In this comprehensive review, we summarize, discuss, and highlight very-recent advances in RXS-based nanomedicine for versatile disease treatments. This review particularly focuses on the types and pathological effects of these reactive species and explores the biological effects of RXS-based nanomaterials, accompanied by a discussion and the outlook of the challenges faced and future clinical translations of RXS nanomedicines.

Phosphorylcholine-grafted graphene oxide loaded with irinotecan for potential oncology therapy

2-Methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) zwitterions were modified onto self-made graphene oxide (GO) through the atom transfer radical polymerization method. The chemical structures of the products were verified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. It was found that the modified GO (GO-PCn) is well dispersed in water with an average hydrodynamic diameter of about 170 nm. By utilizing the 2D planar structure of this modified graphene, the irinotecan@GO-PCn composite can be loaded with about 20% of irinotecan via π-π stacking interaction and exhibit pH-sensitive drug release performance, releasing faster in the acidic environment. The in vitro cytotoxicity assessments confirmed that GO-PCn composed of phosphorylcholine moiety represented low cytotoxicity and acted as a certain effect on reducing the acute toxicity of irinotecan, which established a foundation for further studies of the system in oncology therapy.

Bioactive Vanadium Disulfide Nanostructure with "Dual" Antitumor Effects of Vanadate and Gas for Immune-Checkpoint Blockade-Enhanced Cancer Immunotherapy

Bioactive inorganic nanomaterials and the biological effects of metal ions have attracted extensive attention in tumor therapy in recent years. Vanadium (V), as a typical bioactive metal element, regulates a variety of biological functions. However, its role in antitumor therapy remains to be revealed. Herein, biodegradable vanadium disulfide (VS2) nanosheets (NSs) were prepared as a responsive gas donor and bioactive V source for activating cancer immunotherapy in combination with immune-checkpoint blockade therapy. After PEGylation, VS2-PEG exhibited efficient glutathione (GSH) depletion and GSH-activated hydrogen sulfide (H2S) release. Exogenous H2S caused lysosome escape and reduced adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis in tumor cells by interfering with the mitochondrial membrane potential and inducing acidosis. In addition, VS2-PEG degraded into high-valent vanadate, leading to Na+/K+ ATPase inhibition, potassium efflux, and interleukin (IL)-1β production. Together with further induction of ferroptosis and immunogenic cell death, a strong antitumor immune response was stimulated by reversing the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Moreover, the combined treatment of VS2-PEG and α-PD-1 amplified antitumor therapy, significantly suppressed tumor growth, and further elicited robust immunity to effectively defeat tumors. This work highlights the biological effects of vanadium for application in cancer treatment.

Single Atom Iron-Doped Graphic-Phase C3 N4 Semiconductor Nanosheets for Augmented Sonodynamic Melanoma Therapy Synergy with Endowed Chemodynamic Effect

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is a non-invasive therapeutic modality with high tissue-penetration depth to induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation for tumor treatment. However, the clinical translation of SDT is restricted seriously by the lack of high-performance sonosensitizers. Herein, the distinct single atom iron (Fe)-doped graphitic-phase carbon nitride (C3 N4 ) semiconductor nanosheets (Fe-C3 N4 NSs) are designed and engineered as chemoreactive sonosensitizers to effectively separate the electrons (e- ) and holes (h+ ) pairs, achieving high yields of ROS generation against melanoma upon ultrasound (US) activation. Especially, the single atom Fe doping not only substantially elevates the separation efficiency of the e- -h+ pairs involved in SDT, but also can serve as high-performance peroxidase mimetic enzyme to catalyze the Fenton reaction for generating abundant hydroxyl radicals, therefore synergistically augmenting the curative effect mediated by SDT. As verified by density functional theory simulation, the doping of Fe atom significantly promotes the charge redistribution in the C3 N4 -based NSs, which improves their synergistic SDT/chemodynamic activities. Both the in vitro and in vivo assays demonstrate that Fe-C3 N4 NSs feature an outstanding antitumor effect by aggrandizing the sono-chemodynamic effect. This work illustrates a unique single-atom doping strategy for ameliorating the sonosensitizers, and also effectively expands the innovative anticancer-therapeutic applications of semiconductor-based inorganic sonosensitizers.

Harnessing Hafnium-Based Nanomaterials for Cancer Diagnosis and Therapy

With the rapid development of nanotechnology and nanomedicine, there are great interests in employing nanomaterials to improve the efficiency of disease diagnosis and treatment. The clinical translation of hafnium oxide (HfO2 ), commercially namedas NBTXR3, as a new kind of nanoradiosensitizer for radiotherapy (RT) of cancers has aroused extensive interest in researches on Hf-based nanomaterials for biomedical application. In the past 20 years, Hf-based nanomaterials have emerged as potential and important nanomedicine for computed tomography (CT)-involved bioimaging and RT-associated cancer treatment due to their excellent electronic structures and intrinsic physiochemical properties. In this review, a bibliometric analysis method is employed to summarize the progress on the synthesis technology of various Hf-based nanomaterials, including HfO2 , HfO2 -based compounds, and Hf-organic ligand coordination hybrids, such as metal-organic frameworks or nanoscaled coordination polymers. Moreover, current states in the application of Hf-based CT-involved contrasts for tissue imaging or cancer diagnosis are reviewed in detail. Importantly, the recent advances in Hf-based nanomaterials-mediated radiosensitization and synergistic RT with other current mainstream treatments are also generalized. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives of Hf-based nanomaterials with a view to maximize their great potential in the research of translational medicine are also discussed.

Microenvironment Restruction of Emerging 2D Materials and their Roles in Therapeutic and Diagnostic Nano-Bio-Platforms

Engineering advanced therapeutic and diagnostic nano-bio-platforms (NBPFs) have emerged as rapidly-developed pathways against a wide range of challenges in antitumor, antipathogen, tissue regeneration, bioimaging, and biosensing applications. Emerged 2D materials have attracted extensive scientific interest as fundamental building blocks or nanostructures among material scientists, chemists, biologists, and doctors due to their advantageous physicochemical and biological properties. This timely review provides a comprehensive summary of creating advanced NBPFs via emerging 2D materials (2D-NBPFs) with unique insights into the corresponding molecularly restructured microenvironments and biofunctionalities. First, it is focused on an up-to-date overview of the synthetic strategies for designing 2D-NBPFs with a cross-comparison of their advantages and disadvantages. After that, the recent key achievements are summarized in tuning the biofunctionalities of 2D-NBPFs via molecularly programmed microenvironments, including physiological stability, biocompatibility, bio-adhesiveness, specific binding to pathogens, broad-spectrum pathogen inhibitors, stimuli-responsive systems, and enzyme-mimetics. Moreover, the representative therapeutic and diagnostic applications of 2D-NBPFs are also discussed with detailed disclosure of their critical design principles and parameters. Finally, current challenges and future research directions are also discussed. Overall, this review will provide cutting-edge and multidisciplinary guidance for accelerating future developments and therapeutic/diagnostic applications of 2D-NBPFs.

Modulating Resonance Energy Transfer with Supramolecular Control in a Layered Hybrid Perovskite and Chromium Photosensitizer Assembly

Recently, the low-dimensional organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHP) have been exploited heavily for their favorable exciton dynamics, broad-band emission, remarkable stability, and tunable band-edge excited-state energy compared to their 3D counterparts for potential optoelectronic applications. Low-dimensional perovskites are generally good candidates for utilization as room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) materials. Further, doping divalent transition metals like Mn²⁺ into OIHP is expected to introduce a ⁴T₁-⁶A₁-based low-energy luminescence emission around 600 nm; an optical property that is favorable for biomedical optoelectronics. Doping Mn²⁺ in the perovskite lattice is also expected to induce the generation of cytotoxic singlet oxygen species (¹O₂), a ROS that is being exploited for various therapeutic applications. To integrate these optical and therapeutic properties of a 2D (PEA)₂PbBr₄ (Pb PeV; PEA = phenylethylammonium cation) perovskite alloyed with Mn²⁺ ions (Mn:PbPeV) and the option for a photoinduced energy transfer process involving a Cr(III)-based ¹O₂ generating photosensitizer (CrPS), we designed a unique purpose-built nanoassembly (Mn:PbPeV@PCD) using the encapsulation properties of a water-soluble polymer derived from β-cyclodextrin (PCD). Here the PCD is observed to modulate the classical internal energy transfer of Pb²⁺ exciton to alloyed Mn²⁺ orange emission, resulting in the emergence of a new blue emission. The addition of CrPS into the Mn:PbPeV@PCD to generate the CrPS@Mn:PbPeV@PCD assembly results in restoring perovskite luminescence followed by the external energy transfer to CrPS. We have elucidated the mechanism of these cascade energy transfer processes between multiple components using steady-state and time-resolved luminescence techniques. Efficient ROS generation and its potential to induce an oxidation reaction of a biomolecule are realized using guanine as the target molecule. Further photoinduced cleavage studies with biomolecules confirmed the efficacy of the nanoassembly in inducing the cleavage of guanine-rich DNA. The study opens up a new direction in the field of perovskite for biomedical applications.

Metal Oxides Nanomaterials and Nanocomposite-Based Electrochemical Sensors for Healthcare Applications

Wide-ranging research efforts have been directed to prioritize scientific and technological inventions for healthcare monitoring. In recent years, the effective utilization of functional nanomaterials in various electroanalytical measurements realized a rapid, sensitive, and selective detection and monitoring of a wide range of biomarkers in body fluids. Owing to good biocompatibility, high organic capturing ability, strong electrocatalytic activity, and high robustness, transition metal oxide-derived nanocomposites have led to enhancements in sensing performances. The aim of the present review is to describe key advancements of transition metal oxide nanomaterials and nanocomposites-based electrochemical sensors, along with current challenges and prospects towards the development of a highly durable and reliable detection of biomarkers. Moreover, the preparation of nanomaterials, electrode fabrication, sensing mechanism, electrode-bio interface, and performance of metal oxides nanomaterials and nanocomposite-based sensor platforms will be described.

Near-infrared-II-activatable sulfur-deficient plasmonic Bi2S3-x-Au heterostructures for photoacoustic imaging-guided ultrasound enhanced high performance phototherapy

Bismuth sulfide is widely used as an n-type semiconductor material in photocatalytic reactions. However, bismuth sulfide has poor absorption in the near-infrared region and low charge separation efficiency, limiting its application in phototherapy and sonodynamic therapy (SDT). In this study, we successfully synthesized an "all-in-one" phototheranostic nanoplatform, namely Bi₂S_3-x-Au@HA, based on a single second near-infrared (NIR-II) light-responsive Schottky-type Bi₂S_3-x-Au heterostructure for photoacoustic (PA) imaging-guided SDT-enhanced photodynamic therapy (PDT)/photothermal therapy (PTT). Bi₂S_3-x-Au@HA exhibits excellent NIR-II plasmonic and photothermal properties, rendering it with NIR-II PA imaging capabilities for accurate diagnosis. Additionally, the high-density sulfur vacancies constructed on the Bi₂S₃ surface cause it to possess a reduced band gap (1.21 eV) that can act as an electron trap. Using the density functional theory, we confirmed that the light and ultrasound-induced electrons are more likely to aggregate on the Au nanoparticle surface through interfacial self-assembly, which promotes electron-hole separation and enhances photocatalytic activity with increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. With a further modification of hyaluronic acid (HA), Bi₂S_3-x-Au@HA can selectively target cancer cells through HA and CD44 protein interactions. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that Bi₂S_3-x-Au@HA effectively suppressed tumor growth through SDT-enhanced PTT/PDT under a single NIR-II laser and ultrasound irradiation with negligible toxicity. Our findings provide a framework for fabricating Schottky-type heterostructures as single NIR-II light-responsive nanotheranostic agents for PA imaging-guided cancer phototherapy.

Applications of MXene and its modified materials in skin wound repair

The rapid healing and repair of skin wounds has been receiving much clinical attention. Covering the wound with wound dressing to promote wound healing is currently the main treatment for skin wound repair. However, the performance of wound dressing prepared by a single material is limited and cannot meet the requirements of complex conditions for wound healing. MXene is a new two-dimensional material with electrical conductivity, antibacterial and photothermal properties and other physical and biological properties, which has a wide range of applications in the field of biomedicine. Based on the pathophysiological process of wound healing and the properties of ideal wound dressing, this review will introduce the preparation and modification methods of MXene, systematically summarize and review the application status and mechanism of MXene in skin wound healing, and provide guidance for subsequent researchers to further apply MXene in the design of skin wound dressing.

Current Trends on Bioengineering Approaches for Ovarian Microenvironment Reconstruction

Ovarian tissue has a unique microarchitecture and a complex cellular and molecular dynamics that are essential for follicular survival and development. Due to this great complexity, several factors may lead to ovarian insufficiency, and therefore to systemic metabolic disorders and female infertility. Techniques currently used in the reproductive clinic such as oocyte cryopreservation or even ovarian tissue transplant, although effective, have several limitations, which impair their wide application. In this scenario, mimetic ovarian tissue reconstruction comes as an innovative alternative to develop new methodologies for germ cells preservation and ovarian functions restoration. The ovarian extracellular matrix (ECM) is crucial for oocyte viability maintenance, once it acts actively in folliculogenesis. One of the key components of ovarian bioengineering is biomaterials application that mimics ECM and provides conditions for cell anchorage, proliferation, and differentiation. Therefore, this review aims at describing ovarian tissue engineering approaches and listing the main limitations of current methods for preservation and reestablishment of ovarian fertility. In addition, we describe the main elements that structure this study field, highlighting the main advances and the challenges to overcome to develop innovative methodologies to be applied in reproductive medicine. Impact Statement This review presents the main advances in the application of tissue bioengineering in the ovarian tissue reconstruction to develop innovative solutions for ovarian fertility reestablishment.

Research progress on black phosphorus hybrids hydrogel platforms for biomedical applications

Hydrogels, also known as three-dimensional, flexible, and polymer networks, are composed of natural and/or synthetic polymers with exceptional properties such as hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, biofunctionality, and elasticity. Researchers in biomedicine, biosensing, pharmaceuticals, energy and environment, agriculture, and cosmetics are interested in hydrogels. Hydrogels have limited adaptability for complicated biological information transfer in biomedical applications due to their lack of electrical conductivity and low mechanical strength, despite significant advances in the development and use of hydrogels. The nano-filler-hydrogel hybrid system based on supramolecular interaction between host and guest has emerged as one of the potential solutions to the aforementioned issues. Black phosphorus, as one of the representatives of novel two-dimensional materials, has gained a great deal of interest in recent years owing to its exceptional physical and chemical properties, among other nanoscale fillers. However, a few numbers of publications have elaborated on the scientific development of black phosphorus hybrid hydrogels extensively. In this review, this review thus summarized the benefits of black phosphorus hybrid hydrogels and highlighted the most recent biological uses of black phosphorus hybrid hydrogels. Finally, the difficulties and future possibilities of the development of black phosphorus hybrid hydrogels are reviewed in an effort to serve as a guide for the application and manufacture of black phosphorus -based hydrogels. Recent advances in 2D metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes): synthesis and biological application

As a new two-dimensional (2D) material, transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have attracted much attention because of their excellent physical and chemical properties. In recent years, MXenes have been widely applied in the biological field due to their high biocompatibility, abundant surface groups, good conductivity, and photothermal properties. Here, the main synthesis methods of MXenes and the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each method are presented in detail. Then, the latest developments of MXenes in the biological field, including biosensing, antibacterial activity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radical scavenging, tissue repair and antitumor therapy are comprehensively reviewed. Finally, the current challenges and future development trends of MXenes in biological applications are discussed.

Chirality-Dependent Tumor Phototherapy Using Amino Acid-Engineered Chiral Phosphorene

Phosphorene, also known as black phosphorus nanosheet (BPNS), has been investigated as a nanoagent for tumor therapy. However, promoting its intracellular accumulation while preventing the cytoplasmic decomposition remains challenging. Herein, for the first time, we propose a chiral BPNS designed through surface engineering based on amino acids with high biocompatibility and an abundant source for application in chirality-dependent tumor phototherapy based on its intracellular metabolism. The advantage of using cysteine (Cys) over other amino acids was that its d, l, or dl-form could efficiently work as the chirality inducer to modify the BPNS through electrostatic interaction and prevent alterations in the intrinsic properties of the BPNS. In particular, d-Cys-BPNS displayed an approximately threefold cytotoxic effect on tumor cells compared with l-Cys-BPNS, demonstrating a chirality-dependent therapy behavior. d-Cys-BPNS not only promoted high intracellular content but also showed resistance to cytoplasmic decomposition. Cys-engineered BPNS also demonstrated chirality-dependent phototherapy effects on tumor-bearing mice, in proximity to the results in vitro. Chiral engineering is expected to open new avenues that could promote the use of BPNS in tumor phototherapy and boost chiral nanomedicine.

2D MXene-Based Biosensing: A Review

MXene emerged as decent 2D material and has been exploited for numerous applications in the last decade. The remunerations of the ideal metallic conductivity, optical absorbance, mechanical stability, higher heterogeneous electron transfer rate, and good redox capability have made MXene a potential candidate for biosensing applications. The hydrophilic nature, biocompatibility, antifouling, and anti-toxicity properties have opened avenues for MXene to perform in vitro and in vivo analysis. In this review, the concept, operating principle, detailed mechanism, and characteristic properties are comprehensively assessed and compiled along with breakthroughs in MXene fabrication and conjugation strategies for the development of unique electrochemical and optical biosensors. Further, the current challenges are summarized and suggested future aspects. This review article is believed to shed some light on the development of MXene for biosensing and will open new opportunities for the future advanced translational application of MXene bioassays.

Clear-Box Machine Learning for Virtual Screening of 2D Nanozymes to Target Tumor Hydrogen Peroxide

Targeting tumor hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) with catalytic materials has provided a novel chemotherapy strategy against solid tumors. Because numerous materials have been fabricated so far, there is an urgent need for an efficient in silico method, which can automatically screen out appropriate candidates from materials libraries for further therapeutic evaluation. In this work, adsorption-energy-based descriptors and criteria are developed for the catalase-like activities of materials surfaces. The result enables a comprehensive prediction of H₂ O₂ -targeted catalytic activities of materials by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. To expedite the prediction, machine learning models, which efficiently calculate the adsorption energies for 2D materials without DFT, are further developed. The finally obtained method takes advantage of both interpretability of physics model and high efficiency of machine learning. It provides an efficient approach for in silico screening of 2D materials toward tumor catalytic therapy, and it will greatly promote the development of catalytic nanomaterials for medical applications.

Engineering tumor-specific catalytic nanosystem for NIR-II photothermal-augmented and synergistic starvation/chemodynamic nanotherapy

Background

As an emerging therapeutic modality, chemodynamic therapy (CDT), converting hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into highly toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), has been developed for tumor-specific therapy. However, the deficiency of endogenous H2O2 and high concentration of glutathione (GSH) in the tumor microenvironment (TME) weaken the CDT-based tumor-therapeutic efficacy. Herein, a photothermal-enhanced tumor-specific cascade catalytic nanosystem has been constructed on the basis of glucose oxidase (GOD)-functionalized molybdenum (Mo)-based polyoxometalate (POM) nanoclusters, termed as GOD@POMs.

Methods

GOD@POMs were synthesized by a facile one-pot procedure and covalently conjugation. Then, its structure was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In addition, ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-vis-NIR) absorption spectrum and infrared thermal camera were applied to evaluate the catalytic and photothermal performance, respectively. Moreover, to confirm the therapeutic effects in vitro, cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, live/dead staining and ROS staining were performed. Furthermore, the biosafety of GOD@POMs was investigated via blood routine, blood biochemistry and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining in Kunming mice. Besides, the C6 glioma tumor-bearing mice were constructed to evaluate its anti-tumor effects in vivo and its photoacoustic (PA) imaging capability. Notably, RNA sequencing, H&E, TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) and Ki-67 staining were also conducted to disclose its underlying anti-tumor mechanism.

Results

In this multifunctional nanosystem, GOD can effectively catalyze the oxidation of intratumoral glucose into gluconic acid and H2O2, achieving the cancer starvation therapy. Meanwhile, the generated gluconic acid decreases the pH in TME resulting in POM aggregation, which enables PA imaging-guided tumor-specific photothermal therapy (PTT), especially in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) biological window. Importantly, the Mo (VI) sites on POM can be reduced to Mo (V) active sites in accompany with GSH depletion, and then the post-produced Mo (V) transforms in situ overproduced H2O2 into singlet oxygen (1O2) via Russell mechanism, achieving self-enhanced CDT. Moreover, the PTT-triggered local tumor temperature elevation augments the synergistic nanocatalytic-therapeutic efficacy.

Conclusions

Consequently, the integration of GOD-induced starvation therapy, H2O2 self-supply/GSH-depletion enhanced Mo-based CDT, and POM aggregation-mediated PTT endow the GOD@POMs with remarkable synergistic anticancer outcomes with neglectable adverse effects.

Recent advances and trends in the applications of MXene nanomaterials for tissue engineering and regeneration

MXene, as a new two-dimensional nanomaterial, is endowed with lots of particular properties, such as large surface area, excellent conductivity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, hydrophilicity, antibacterial activity, and so on. In the past few years, MXene nanomaterials have become a rising star in biomedical fields including biological imaging, tumor diagnosis, biosensor, and tissue engineering. In this review, we sum up the recent applications of MXene nanomaterials in the field of tissue engineering and regeneration. First, we briefly introduced the synthesis and surface modification engineering of MXene. Then we focused on the application and development of MXene and MXene-based composites in skin, bone, nerve and heart tissue engineering. Uniquely, we also paid attention to some research on MXene with few achievements at present but might become a new trend in tissue engineering and regeneration in the future. Finally, this paper will also discuss several challenges faced by MXene nanomaterials in the clinical application of tissue engineering.

Nontoxic Tb3+-induced hyaluronic nano-poached egg aggregates for colorimetric and luminescent detection of Fe3+ ions

This study demonstrates that a luminescent Tb³⁺ complex with green emission can be complexed with hyaluronic (hya) to form nanoparticles. The structure of complexation is composed of a Tb(acac)₂phen core with a hya surface, similar to those of the nano-poached eggs. What makes the structure unique is that Tb(acac)₂phen and hya are connected by chemical bonds. To confirm their utility, we illustrate that the luminescence is rapidly and selectively quenched in the presence of Fe³⁺. Initial cytotoxicity experiments with human liver carcinoma cells show that the luminescent lanthanide complexes are cytotoxic, however, complexing lanthanides to hya renders them cytocompatible. The new complex integrates the advantages of superior lanthanide luminescence, the unique shape of nano-poached eggs, compatibility with aqueous systems, and cytocompatibility. Tb³⁺-induced hyaluronic nano-poached eggs (THNE) can, therefore, be used for Fe³⁺ detection in aqueous systems.

Efficient and reusable catalysis of benzylic C-H oxidation over layered [Co5(OH)6]4+ derivatives

Aerobic oxidation of benzylic C(sp³)-H bonds in a green and heterogeneous manner is a major target in organic catalysis. Herein, we report the synthesis of 3D coordination polymers containing [Co₅(OH)₆]⁴⁺ layers, affording reusable and efficient oxidation of ethylbenezene and tetralin by using O₂ as the oxidant. Moreover, the cleavage of Co^II-carboxylate bonding renders atomically thin cobaltate nanosheets and enhanced catalytic performance. This is one of the top catalytic performances for Co^II-catalyzed benzylic C(sp³)-H oxidation (∼0.02 mol% Co and 76% conversion for nanosheets), ascribed to the exposed, accessible and coordinatively unsaturated Co^II species.

Research trends in biomedical applications of two-dimensional nanomaterials over the last decade - A bibliometric analysis

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with versatile properties have been widely applied in the field of biomedicine. Despite various studies having reviewed the development of biomedical 2D nanomaterials, there is a lack of a study that objectively summarizes and analyzes the research trend of this important field. Here, we employ a series of bibliometric methods to identify the development of the 2D nanomaterial-related biomedical field during the past 10 years from a holistic point of view. First, the annual publication/citation growth, country/institute/author distribution, referenced sources, and research hotspots are identified. Thereafter, based on the objectively identified research hotspots, the contributions of 2D nanomaterials to the various biomedical subfields, including those of biosensing, imaging/therapy, antibacterial treatment, and tissue engineering are carefully explored, by considering the intrinsic properties of the nanomaterials. Finally, prospects and challenges have been discussed to shed light on the future development and clinical translation of 2D nanomaterials. This review provides a novel perspective to identify and further promote the development of 2D nanomaterials in biomedical research.

Image-guided/improved diseases management: From immune-strategies and beyond

Timely and accurate assessment and diagnosis are extremely important and beneficial for all diseases, especially for some of the major human disease, such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases. Limited by the variable disease microenvironment, early imperceptible symptoms, complex immune system interactions, and delayed clinical phenotypes, disease diagnosis and treatment are difficult in most cases. Molecular imaging (MI) techniques can track therapeutic drugs and disease sites in vivo and in vitro in a non-invasive, real-time and visible strategies. Comprehensive visual imaging and quantitative analysis based on different levels can help to clarify the disease process, pathogenesis, drug pharmacokinetics, and further evaluate the therapeutic effects. This review summarizes the application of different MI techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of these major human diseases. It is hoped to shed a light on the development of related technologies and fields.

LAPONITE® nanodisk-"decorated" Fe3O4 nanoparticles: a biocompatible nano-hybrid with ultrafast magnetic hyperthermia and MRI contrast agent ability

Magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles "decorated" by LAPONITE® nanodisks have been materialized utilizing the Schikorr reaction following a facile approach and tested as mediators of heat for localized magnetic hyperthermia (MH) and as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agents. The synthetic protocol involves the interaction between two layered inorganic compounds, ferrous hydroxide, Fe(OH)₂, and the synthetic smectite LAPONITE® clay Na_0.7⁺[(Si₈Mg_5.5Li_0.3)O₂₀(OH)₄]_0.7^-, towards the formation of superparamagnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, which are well decorated by the diamagnetic clay nanodisks. The latter imparts high negative ζ-potential values (up to -34.1 mV) to the particles, which provide stability against flocculation and precipitation, resulting in stable water dispersions. The obtained LAPONITE®-"decorated" Fe₃O₄ nanohybrids were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Mössbauer spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) at room temperature, revealing superior magnetic hyperthermia performance with specific absorption rate (SAR) values reaching 540 W g_Fe^-1 (28 kA m^-1, 150 kHz) for the hybrid material with a magnetic loading of 50 wt% Fe₃O₄/LAPONITE®. Toxicity studies were also performed with human glioblastoma (GBM) cells and human foreskin fibroblasts (HFF), which show negligible to no toxicity. Furthermore, T₂-weighted MR imaging of rodent brain shows that the LAPONITE®-"decorated" Fe₃O₄ nanohybrids predominantly affected the transverse T₂ relaxation time of tissue water, which resulted in a signal drop on the MRI T₂-weighted imaging, allowing for imaging of the magnetic nanoparticles.

Revealing intrinsic spin coupling in transition metal-doped graphene

Graphene materials offer attractive possibilities in spintronics due to their unique atomic and electronic structures, which is in contrast to their limited applications in the design of sophisticated spintronic devices. This should be attributed to the lack of knowledge about the intrinsic characteristics of graphene materials, especially the diverse correlations between sites within the materials and their roles in spin-signal generation and propagation. This work comprehensively studies the spin couplings between transition metal atoms doped on graphene and reveals their potential application in spintronic device design through the realization of various logic gates. In addition, the effects of the distance between doped metal atoms and the number of carbon layers on the logic gate implementation further verify that the spin-coupling effect can exhibit a certain distance dependence and space propagation. The achievements in this work uncover the potential value of graphene materials and are expected to open up new avenues for exploring their application in the design of sophisticated spintronic devices.

Interaction of Nucleic Acids with Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets by Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

The integration of nanomaterials and nucleic acids has attracted great attention in various research fields, especially biomedical applications. Designing two-dimensional nanomaterials and studying the mechanism of their interaction with nucleic acids are still attractive tasks. Herein, we designed and prepared a class of ultrathin two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets, named Zr-BTB MOF nanosheets, composed of Zr-O clusters and 1,3,5-benzenetribenzoate by a bottom-up synthesis strategy. The Zr-BTB MOF nanosheets possessed inherent excellent performance such as a high specific surface area, porosity, and biocompatibility. In addition, we clarified the interaction difference between the Zr-BTB MOF nanosheets and fluorophore-labeled double-stranded DNA and single-stranded DNA via molecular dynamics simulations and fluorescence measurement. Through molecular dynamics simulations, specific interactions between DNA and nanosheets such as forces, binding energies, and binding modes were deeply analyzed and clearly presented. Based on the affinity difference, the system showed the biosensing potential for target DNA detection with considerable specificity, sensitivity, and linearity. Our research results presented the Zr-BTB MOF nanosheet as a platform for nucleic acid detection, showing the potential for hybridization-based biosensing and related biological applications.
