Abstract
Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is a highly impacting complication in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), occurring in 12%-37% of patients. The impact of transplant- and patient-specific variables has been described, with a possible role for JCV and BKV, which may be cooperating with cytomegalovirus (CMV). Here, we analyze 134 letermovir-exposed, CMV-free patients, treated with the same cyclophosphamide-based graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis, describing risk factors for HC. The overall incidence of HC was 23%. Patients with HLA mismatched transplant, higher comorbidity score, and receiving three alkylating agents with TBF (thiotepa, busulfan, and fludarabine) conditioning regimen had a higher risk of HC in multivariate analysis (OR: 4.48, 6.32, and 1.32, respectively). A HC-score including male gender, TBF conditioning, and HLA-mismatch stratifies the risk of HC in the first 100 days after HSCT. The role of BKV and JCV was not highly impacting in those patients, suggesting a possible synergistic effect between CMV and JCV in causing HC. HC can be interpreted as the combination of patient-related factors, chemotherapy-related toxicities-especially due to alkylating agents-and immunological elements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently 12 human polyomaviruses (HPyVs) have been identified, 6 of which have been associated with human diseases, including cancer. The discovery of the Merkel cell polyomavirus and its role in the etiopathogenesis in the majority of Merkel cell carcinomas has drawn significant attention, also to other novel HPyVs. In 2010, HPyV6 and HPyV7 were identified in healthy skin swabs. Ever since it has been speculated that they might contribute to the etiopathogenesis of skin and non-cutaneous human cancers. MAIN BODY Here we comprehensively reviewed and summarized the current evidence potentially indicating an involvement of HPyV6 and HPyV7 in the etiopathogenesis of neoplastic human diseases. The seroprevalence of both HPyV6 and 7 is high in a normal population and increases with age. In skin cancer tissues, HPyV6- DNA was far more often prevalent than HPyV7 in contrast to cancers of other anatomic sites, in which HPyV7 DNA was more frequently detected. CONCLUSION It is remarkable to find that the detection rate of HPyV6-DNA in tissues of skin malignancies is higher than HPyV7-DNA and may indicate a role of HPyV6 in the etiopathogenesis of the respected skin cancers. However, the sheer presence of viral DNA is not enough to prove a role in the etiopathogenesis of these cancers.

Abstract
This review briefly covers periods of my early life; experiences during World War II; my school education; and my period as a medical student in Bonn, Hamburg, and Düsseldorf. Mainly emphasized is my scientific career after finishing my medical internship and periods as a postdoc at the Institute for Microbiology in Düsseldorf and the Virus Laboratories of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and as Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Virology in Würzburg, Germany. Subsequent appointment as chairman of the newly established Institute of Virology, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, in a similar position at the University of Freiburg, and then for 20 years as scientific director of the Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, Heidelberg, are discussed, covering the scientific developments during these periods. The emeritus period since 2003 was particularly exciting, leading to the discovery of autonomously replicating plasmids, derived from specific bacteria, and their link to common human cancers (colon, breast, and prostate).

Abstract
Immunocompromised patients are susceptible to multiple viral infections. Relevant interactions between co-infecting viruses might result from viral regulatory genes which trans-activate or repress the expression of host cell genes as well as the genes of any co-infecting virus. The aim of the current study was to show that the replication of human adenovirus 5 is enhanced by co-infection with BK polyomavirus and is associated with increased expression of proteins including early region 4 open reading frame 1 and both the large tumor antigen and small tumor antigen. Clinical samples of whole blood and urine from 156 hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients were tested. We also inoculated adenocarcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cells with both human adenovirus 5 and BK polyomavirus to evaluate if co-infection of viruses affected their replication. Data showed that adenovirus load was significantly higher in the plasma (mean 7.5 x 103 ± 8.5 x 102 copies/ml) and urine (mean 1.9 x 103 ± 8.0 x 102 copies/ml) of samples from patients with co-infections, in comparison to samples from patients with isolated adenovirus infection. In vitro co-infection led to an increased (8.6 times) expression of the adenovirus early region 4 open reading frame gene 48 hours post-inoculation. The expression of the early region 4 open reading frame gene positively correlated with the expression of BK polyomavirus large tumor antigen (r = 0.90, p < 0.0001) and small tumor antigen (r = 0.83, p < 0.001) genes. The enhanced expression of the early region 4 open reading frame gene due to co-infection with BK polyomavirus was associated with enhanced adenovirus, but not BK polyomavirus, replication. The current study provides evidence that co-infection of adenovirus and BK polyomavirus contributes to enhanced adenovirus replication. Data obtained from this study may have significant importance in the clinical setting.

Abstract
Objective The effect of polyomavirus infection in HSCT recipients is poorly understood. Methods We evaluated 38 HSCT recipients. Polyomavirus was detected by nested qualitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays of urine. The risk factors for BK virus and JC virus were analysed. The kidney and liver functions of infected and uninfected patients were compared. Results BK virus, JC virus, and simian virus 40 were detected in 21%, 42%, and 0% of HSCT recipients respectively. HCMV infection was found to be an independent risk factor for JC virus infection (odds ratio (OR): 8.528), while transplants with mismatched HLA are more susceptible to BK virus infection (OR: 12.000). Liver function of JC virus-infected subjects was worse than that of uninfected subjects. Conclusion We must be vigilant for opportunistic polyomavirus infections in HSCT recipients, especially those with HCMV co-infection or a mismatched HLA transplant. When unexplained liver function deterioration is observed, JC virus infection should be considered.

Abstract
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare but debilitating and frequently fatal viral disease of the central nervous system, primarily affecting individuals with chronically and severely suppressed immune systems. The disease was relatively obscure until the outbreak of HIV/AIDS, when it presented as one of the more frequent opportunistic infections in this immune deficiency syndrome. It attracted additional attention from the medical and scientific community following the discovery of significant PML risk associated with natalizumab, a monoclonal antibody used for treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. This was followed by association of PML with other immunosuppressive or immunomodulating drugs. PML is currently untreatable disease with poor outcomes, so it is a significant concern when developing new immunotherapies. Current prophylaxis and treatment of PML are focused on immune reconstitution, restoration of immune responses to JC virus infection, and eventual suppression of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome. This approach was successful in reducing the incidence of PML and improved survival of PML patients with HIV infection. However, the outcome for the majority of PML patients, regardless of their medical history, is still relatively poor. There is a high unmet need for both prophylaxis and treatment of PML. The aim of this review is to discuss potential drug candidates for prophylaxis and treatment of PML with a critical review of previously conducted and completed PML treatment studies as well as to provide perspectives for future therapies.

Yet, the various ways of interacting among different factors functioning synergistically and their different modes of affecting individual cells should bring to question the validity of the term "causation". It also should put a word of caution into all attempts to summarize criteria for "causality" of infectious agents in cancer development. At least in the opinion of these authors, we would be much better off avoiding these terms, replacing "causal factor" by "risk factor" and grading them according to their contribution to an individual's cancer risk.

Abstract
PML nuclear bodies and their associated functions are part of an intrinsic cellular mechanism aimed at maintaining transcriptional control over viral gene expression and preventing replication of invading viruses. To overcome these barriers, many viruses express early nonstructural, multifunctional proteins to support the viral replication cycle or modulate host immune responses. Virion proteins constituting the invading particle are traditionally investigated for their role in transport during entry or egress and in the assembly of new virions. The additional functions of virion proteins have largely been ignored, in contrast to those of their nonstructural counterparts. A number of recent reports suggest that several virion proteins may also play vital roles in gene activation processes, in particular by counteracting intrinsic immune mechanisms mediated by the PML nuclear body-associated cellular factors Daxx, ATRX, and Sp100. These virion proteins share several features with their more potent nonstructural counterparts, and they may serve to bridge the gap in the early phase of an infection until immediate early viral gene expression is established. In this review, we discuss how virion proteins are an integral part of gene regulation among several viral families and to what extent structural proteins of incoming virions may contribute to species barrier, latency, and oncogenesis.

Abstract
Opportunistic viral infections are common in simian immunodeficiency virus-infected rhesus macaques and include simian polyomavirus 40 (SV40), which causes interstitial nephritis, pneumonia, meningoencephalitis, and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and rhesus cytomegalovirus (Macacine herpesvirus-3), which is associated with many pathologic manifestations, including the formation of neutrophil-rich gastrointestinal masses. Herein we report the findings of a simian immunodeficiency virus-infected rhesus macaque that presented to necropsy with multiple nodular masses restricted to the proximal jejunum. Histologically, the masses within the lamina propria were composed of abundant, loosely organized, mesenchymal tissue forming broad interlacing whorls and sheets admixed with variable numbers of neutrophils. Cells within the mesenchymoproliferative nodules contained numerous basophilic, intranuclear inclusion bodies with only scattered cytomegalic cells. Immunohistochemistry for rhesus cytomegalovirus and SV40 demonstrated variable numbers of immunopositive cells within the affected nodules. This report is the first description of SV40-associated pathology in the small intestine of a rhesus macaque and highlights the role that opportunistic viral infections can have on gastrointestinal pathology in immunosuppressed rhesus macaques.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Opportunistic virus infection is one of the most common complications in renal transplant (RT) recipients. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and BK virus (BKV) are important pathogens and each of these infections affects the other. In contrast, there is only limited information on JC virus (JCV) infection and its relation to CMV infection in RT recipients. This prospective study investigated the rates of JCV and CMV infections and their risk factors and correlations. METHODS We studied 52 RT recipients. JCV and CMV were detected using nested qualitative polymerase chain reaction assays of urine. The clinical characteristics of JCV and CMV infection were compared and risk factors analyzed with the use of binary logistic regression. RESULTS JCV and CMV were detected in 40.4% and 34.6% of the RT recipients, respectively. Cyclosporine (CsA) was a risk factor for both JCV and CMV infection (odds ratio [OR] 7.187; P=.002; OR 4.182; P=.021); CMV infection was a risk factor for JCV infection (OR 3.900; P=.039). CONCLUSIONS JCV and CMV infections are common in RT recipients. CsA is a risk factor for both JCV and CMV infection. JCV infection is related to CMV infection.

Abstract
Viral infections have been implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has frequently been investigated as a possible candidate and torque teno virus (TTV) has also been discussed in this context. Nevertheless, mechanistic aspects remain unresolved. We report viral replication, as measured by genome amplification, as well as quantitative PCR of two TTV-HD14 isolates isolated from multiple sclerosis brain in a series of EBV-positive and -negative lymphoblastoid and Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines. Our results demonstrate the replication of both transfected TTV genomes up to day 21 post transfection in all the evaluated cell lines. Quantitative amplification indicates statistically significant enhanced TTV replication in the EBV-positive cell lines, including the EBV-converted BJAB line, in comparison to the EBV-negative Burkitt's lymphoma cell line BJAB. This suggests a helper effect of EBV infections in the replication of TTV. The present study provides information on a possible interaction of EBV and TTV in the etiology and progression of multiple sclerosis.

Abstract
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare, opportunistic infection of the CNS by the ubiquitous JC virus (JCV). PML is only seen in the context of severe and prolonged immunosuppression, a phenomenon now frequently encountered since the AIDS pandemic. PML is characterised by progressive lysis of oligodendrocytes with demyelination. A rapid clinical course ensues with focal neurological deficits and a median time to death of 3.5 months without treatment. Prior to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), there was no effective therapy. Since the advent of HAART, the prognosis for PML has much improved; however, a significant number of patients appear unresponsive to antiretrovirals and some worsen because of the development of immune reconstitution disease. A better understanding of the biology of JCV and its interactions with host cells is leading to new anti-JCV-specific agents that await evaluation in randomised, controlled trials. Improved diagnostic tools and the possibility of immunotherapy and gene therapy are further advancing the field.

Abstract
JC virus (JCV) is a human polyomavirus that exists in at least eight different genotypes as a result of coevolution with different human populations all over the world. Well adapted to its host, it usually persists in the kidneys and possibly the brain. If the host becomes immunodeficient, JCV can cause the fatal demyelinating disease progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). There is increasing evidence that JCV is transactivated by cytomegalovirus (CMV) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Both CMV and HIV can infect the retina of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients, causing severe necrosis in the case of CMV retinitis or a mild HIV-associated vasculopathy, with bleeding and cotton wool spots. The authors therefore investigated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) whether DNA of these three viruses was detectable in paraffin-embedded eyes of AIDS patients with a clinical history of CMV retinitis. From a total of 65 eyes, JCV was detected in 21 (32%). Thirty-six (55%) were positive for CMV and 6 (9%) for proviral DNA of HIV. JCV and CMV were found in 13 eyes, JCV and HIV in 3 eyes, CMV and HIV in 1 eye, and DNA from all three viruses in 1 eye. The JCV genotypes were types 1A, 2A, 2E, 3, and 4. In 21 eyes of patients without AIDS, only one sample was JCV positive. In conclusion, JCV DNA can be detected in ocular tissue of AIDS patients at a significantly higher level than in eyes of nonimmunosuppressed patients. Further investigations will help to decide if JCV contributes to the retinopathy caused by CMV and HIV.

Abstract
Traditionally, the Hirt extraction method, a multi-step, labor-intensive and time-consuming procedure, is employed to extract selectively low-molecular weight DNA for polyomavirus DNA replication analyses. DNA replication results obtained with this approach are often inconsistent between replicate samples. To increase the efficiency and reproducibility of the polyomavirus DNA replication assay, we compared the DNA quality and yield using Qiagen Spin Column technology and the Hirt extraction technique. CV-1 cells transfected with SV40 DNA were harvested at days 2, 4, and 6 post-transfection, and DNA was extracted using the Qiagen Spin Column and the Hirt extraction methods. Southern hybridization was performed using a (32)P-labeled linear full-length SV40 DNA probe. Viral DNA replication was quantitated using a BioRad phosphorimager, and results obtained with the two procedures were compared. Southern blot analysis revealed consistent and enhanced SV40 DNA recovery using the Qiagen Spin Column technology, and viral DNA replication over a 6-day period was reproducible among triplicate samples. In addition, Qiagen Spin Column technology reduced the time required to obtain good quality DNA for polyomavirus replication assays from 24 h to less than 3 h. Adoption of this extraction procedure will improve the determination of polyomavirus DNA replication activity, while reducing the investigator's exposure to and disposal of toxic organic compounds.

Abstract
Viral coinfections may modulate disease expression, enhance pathogenicity, and lead to greater cumulative immunosuppression in the host. The pathophysiological basis of these may be direct virus-virus interactions, effect of cohabitating viruses on host cell function, or impaired host immune responses. The interrelationship between viral pathogens has become increasingly more relevant and its scope wider as new or previously unrecognized viruses continue to emerge as pathogens in transplant recipients. The pathways and mediators that modulate biological activity represent potential targets for immunomodulatory interventions as adjunctive therapies for transplant recipients.

Abstract
Haemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is an important cause of morbidity following stem cell transplantation (SCT) and has been associated with polyoma virus infection. We studied the incidence and outcome of polyoma virus infection in 58 T-cell-depleted SCT patients. T-cell depletion was carried out using Campath-1H, either 10 or 20 mg in vitro (n=33) or 50 or 100 mg in vivo (n=25) following conventional (n=35) or nonmyeloablative conditioning (n=23). A total of 21 patients (36%) had polyoma viruria at a median of 35 days (5-114); 30% among patients receiving Campath in vitro and 44% among those given in vivo. The only risk factor for polyoma viruria was graft-versus-host disease GVHD grade >or=2. The onset of polyoma viruria coincided with Cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation in all six patients who reactivated both viruses. Prolonged viruria (defined as polyoma viruria >2 weeks) was documented in 10 patients (17%) and this was associated with GVHD >or=grade 2. HC occurred in four patients. Prolonged viruria was associated with HC only in patients receiving unrelated donor grafts following conventional conditioning. HC was not observed following nonmyeloablative conditioning despite a higher incidence of prolonged viruria. Thus, HC was uncommon in patients with polyoma viruria following T-cell depletion with Campath, particularly after reduced intensity conditioning.

Abstract
Human Epstein-Barr virus-immortalized lymphoblastoid B-cell lines tested positive by PCR for simian virus 40 (SV40) DNA (22 of 42 cell lines, 52.3%). B lymphocytes or tissues from which B-cell lines derived were also SV40 positive. In situ hybridization showed that SV40 DNA was present in the nucleus of a small fraction (1/250) of cells. SV40 T-antigen mRNA was detected by reverse transcription-PCR. Lymphoblastoid B-cell lines (n = 4) infected with SV40 remained SV40 positive for 4 to 6 months. SV40-positive B-cell lines were more tumorigenic in SCID mice than were SV40-negative cell lines (4 of 5 [80%] SV40-positive cell lines versus 2 of 4 [50%] SV40-negative cell lines). These results suggest that SV40 may play a role in the early phases of human lymphomagenesis.

Abstract
Cytomegalovirus infection is a major cause of morbidity in immunocompromised patients. The major immediate early promoter/enhancer (MIEP) of the human cytomegalovirus controls the expression of the immediate early genes 1 and 2 which play a central role both in primary and reactivated human cytomegalovirus (HCMV)-infections. Our previous studies have shown that co-infection of A549 cells with human cytomegalovirus and human polyomavirus BK resulted in enhanced expression of the immediate early genes 1 and 2 and that the early gene products of BK virus trans-activated the MIEP. However, neither the MIEP sequences required for mediating this trans-activation, nor the contribution of the individual BK virus early gene products were examined. The MIEP contains multiple binding sites for the transcription factors CREB, AP1, Sp1 and NFkappaB, which may mediate polyomavirus large T- or small t-antigens-induced promoter activation. Transient transfection studies in A549 cells demonstrated that SV40 large T-antigen, but not small t-antigen, trans-activated MIEP activity approximately 9-fold. Mutations in individual binding motifs in the context of the complete MIEP did not impair traits-activation by large T-antigen. The level of induction of a truncated MIEP consisting of a single set of CRE/AP1, NFkappaB, and Sp1 binding motifs by large T-antigen was reduced 2-fold compared to the full length MIEP. Extended truncations diminished trans-activation by large T-antigen. To determine the contribution of a single binding motif in the trans-activation by large T-antigen, a CRE/AP1, an NFkappaB, an Sp1, or a non-consensus Sp1-motif, respectively, was linked to the MIEP TATA-sequence respecting the natural spacing between the two transcription regulatory elements. Only the MIEP TATA-box with the correctly spaced non-consensus Sp1 binding site (GT-motif) was stimulated by large T-antigen. These results suggest that an isolated non-consensus Sp1-motif is important for trans-activation of the MIEP by large T-antigen, but that other cis-acting elements can compensate for this element in the context of the whole MIEP.

Abstract
Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is a known complication of stem cell transplantation. In contrast to early-onset HC that is usually attributed to cyclophosphamide and occurs within a few days of infusion, late onset HC is associated with viral infection. In recent years BK virus has emerged as an important causative agent. We describe two patients who developed late onset HC (38 and 92 days post transplant) associated with BK viruria concomitant with CMV reactivation and suggest a possible role of CMV in the process of BK virus DNA replication.

Abstract
Distinctive genotypes of JC virus have been described for the major continental landmasses. Studies on European-Americans and small cohorts in Europe showed predominantly Type 1. Types 2 and 7 are found in Asia, and Types 3 and 6 in Africa. These genotypes differ in sequence by about 1--3%. Each genotype may have several subtypes which differ from each other by about 0.5--1%. The genotypes can be defined by a distinctive pattern of nucleotides in a typing region of the VP1 gene. This genotyping approach has been confirmed by phylogenetic reconstruction using the entire genome exclusive of the rearranging regulatory region. In this first large European study, we report on the urinary excretion of JCV DNA of 350 individuals from Poland, Hungary, Germany and Spain. We included Gypsy cohorts in Hungary (Roma), Germany (Sinti), and Spain (Gitano), as well as Basques in Spain. We show that while Type 1 predominates in Europe, the proportions of Type 1A and 1B may differ from East to Southwest Europe. Type 4, closely related to the Type 1 sequence (only approximately 1% difference) was a minor genotype in Germany, Poland and Spain, but represented the majority in Basques. The Gitanos in Spain showed a variant Type 4 sequence termed 'Rom-1'. Interestingly, neither the Gitanos in Spain, nor Sinti or Roma in Germany or Hungary showed the Type 2 or Type 7 genotype that might be expected if their origins were in an Asian population.

Abstract
Human papovavirus JCV is the causative agent of the demyelinating brain disease progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) that typically develops as a complication of impaired immunocompetence. JCV displays a strong tropism for glial cells which is correlated by glial-specific transcriptional regulation of viral gene expression. In a previous report HCMV was shown to overcome the restricted cell specificity of JCV by inducing DNA replication of a PML-derived JCV strain in human fibroblasts which are nonpermissive for the replication of JCV alone. Here we show that productive JCV replication is induced by HCMV in human glioblastoma cells. Both in fibroblasts and in glioblastoma cells, the HCMV immediate-early transactivator 2 (IE2) is sufficient to mediate JCV replication. Furthermore, IE2 induces DNA replication of several structurally different brain- or kidney-derived JCV variants. IE2-induced JCV DNA replication is accompanied by the induction of JCV T antigen expression due to stimulation of the JCV early promoter. Our results indicate that stimulation of JCV early gene expression by HCMV-IE2 is sufficient to overcome the restricted cell specificity of JCV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are demyelinative diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). PML occurs mostly in individuals with AIDS-impaired immunity and is thought to be caused by JC polyoma virus (JCV). In MS a neurotrophic virus trigger is suspected, but the precise etiology remains unknown. Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV6) is a ubiquitous, commensal and usually benign beta-herpesvirus. Some researchers have found evidence for HHV6 infection in MS plaques and sera. We recently demonstrated a high frequency of cells containing HHV6 genome in PML lesions, as well as co-infection of oligodendrocytes by JCV and HHV6. This suggests that HHV6 may be a co-factor in the etiology of PML, and raises questions about its role in other demyelinative diseases. OBJECTIVES To determine the prevalence and cellular localization of HHV6, JCV and HIV-1 infected cells in PML, MS, AIDS and control CNS tissues, and their potential relationship with disease. STUDY DESIGN An unconventional, sensitive two-step in situ polymerase chain reaction (ISPCR) procedure was used to amplify and detect HHV6, JCV and HIV-1 genomic DNAs in formalin fixed, paraffin-embedded archival CNS tissues. HHV6, JCV and HIV-1 gene expression was detected by ICC for HHV6 p41 and gp101, JCV large T, and HIV-1 p24 gag and NEF proteins. RESULTS A high frequency of HHV6 genome was consistently detected in both PML and MS white matter lesional cells; a peri-lesional concentration was notable. HHV6 was found mainly in oligodendrocytes, but neurons were also infected. HHV6 was present in larger amounts than JCV in PML lesions, while more HIV-1 than HHV6 was present in AIDS. Variable amounts of HHV6 genome were detected in normal, AIDS and other control brains; the frequency of infected cells tended to increase with patient age. CONCLUSIONS High concentrations of HHV6 genome in association with PML and MS lesions, open the possibility that HHV6 activation may play a role in the pathogenesis of these demyelinative diseases.

Abstract
Co-infections or co-habitations of cells by two or more viruses may occur in the human organism. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and the human polyomavirus BK (BKV) have common host cells and may both establish lifelong latency/persistence following primary infection. Both viruses may become reactivated by immunosuppression or other conditions which upset host-virus balance, and they encode gene products with the inherent potential of acting as heterologous transacting factors for expression of cellular or viral genes. It has been shown that HCMV induces gene expression and replication of primate polyomaviruses. We now demonstrate that BKV is able to enhance the expression of HCMV immediate early (IE1 and 2) as well as the early (E) protein pp65 during double infections in semi-permissive cells. By transfection experiments it was established that the phenomenon is due to heterologous transcriptional transactivation of the HCMV major IE promoter (MIEP) by the BKV large T antigen, without contribution from the small t antigen.
