Cassava: Nutrient composition and nutritive value in poultry diets

Insufficient supply, high prices and competition with the human food and biofuel industries means there is a continuous demand for alternative energy sources for poultry. As a result, cassava is becoming an increasingly important ingredient in poultry diets, largely due to its high availability. Efficient use of cassava products has been shown to reduce feed costs of poultry production. The utilisation of cassava is, however, limited by a number of factors, including its high fibre and low energy content and the presence of anti-nutritional factors, primarily hydrocyanic acid (HCN). With correct processing the inclusion level of cassava in poultry diets could be increased. Extensive research has been conducted on cassava products for poultry, but there is still a lack of consistency amongst the measured nutritive values for cassava and its products, hence variation exists in results from poultry studies. This paper reviews the nutrient composition of cassava products and its value as an alternative energy source in poultry diets.

Comparative effects of prolonged administration of cyanide, thiocyanate and chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) to goats

The aim of the present study was to determine and compare the clinical, hematological, biochemical and histopathological changes induced by cyanide, thiocyanate and chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) in goats. Sixteen Boer-Spanish cross-bred female goats were divided into four treatment groups: (1) control, (2) potassium cyanide (KCN) at 3.8 mg kg(-1) day(-1), (3) potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) at 4.5 mg kg(-1) day(-1) and (4) ground frozen chokecherry leaves and flowers at a target dose of 2.5 mg HCN kg(-1) day(-1), all for 4 weeks. Clinical signs were observed in two goats treated with chokecherry. Only sporadic changes were found in the hematological and blood chemical panel. Goats treated with chokecherry and thiocyanate had an increased number of vacuoles in the colloid of thyroid glands. Spongiosis and spheroids were found in the mesencephalon from goats treated with KCN and chokecherry. These findings suggest the thyroid lesions can be attributed to thiocyanate, whereas the effects on the nervous system were most likely caused by cyanide.

Does prolonged oral exposure to cyanide promote hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity?

Long-term exposure to cyanide and/or its main metabolite, thiocyanate, has been associated with goiter, pancreatic diabetes and several neurological disorders. However, very little is found in the literature relating the nephrotoxic and hepatotoxic effects of these substances. Thus, the objective of the present study was to verify the effects of prolonged exposure to potassium cyanide (KCN) in these organs. Forty-six male adults rats, weighing approximately 200 g at the beginning of the experiment, were distributed into five groups-four experimental and one control. Experimental groups were dosed with target doses of 0.3, 0.9, 3.0 or 9.0 mg KCN/kg per day, in the drinking water, during 15 days and the control groups received only tap water. At the end of this experiment, all rats were subjected to euthanasia and plasma samples were obtained in order to determine thiocyanate and thyroidal hormones levels and fragments of thyroid, kidney and liver were collected. Rats treated with the highest cyanide dose (9.0 mg KCN/kg per day) showed lower body weight gain. An increase in the thiocyanate levels was verified in all experimental groups. The histopathologic study revealed hydropic degeneration of the renal tubular epithelial cells in those animals, which received KCN at the dose of 3.0-9.0 mg/kg per day. This study also showed hydropic degeneration of the hepatocytes of those animals, which received KCN at a dose of 9.0 mg/kg per day, and in the thyroid gland an increase was observed in the number of reabsorption vacuoles on follicular colloid, in a dose-dependent manner, in all animals of the experimental groups.

Physiopathological effects of the administration of chronic cyanide to growing goats--a model for ingestion of cyanogenic plants

Ingestion of cyanogenic plants, such as cassava and sorghum, has been associated with goitre and tropical pancreatic diabetes in both humans and animals. Thus, the objective of the present study was to determine the toxic effects on the thyroid and pancreas in growing goats of prolonged exposure to potassium cyanide (KCN). Thirty-four male goats were divided into five groups dosed with KCN at 0 (control). 0.3, 0.6, 1.2 or 3.0 mg/kg daily for 5 months. Blood samples were obtained in order to determine the glucose, cholesterol, thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and thiocyanate concentrations and for haematological studies; pancreas and thyroid gland were collected for histopathological study. The group receiving the highest dose of cyanide showed lower body weight gains and carcase weights and a decrease in plasma T3 concentrations compared to the control group. Reabsorption vacuoles in follicular colloid and normocytic normochromic anaemia were observed in the experimental animals. Inhibition of peripheral conversion of T4 to T3 is suggested. However, no diabetogenic effects were observed.

Plant cyanogenic glycosides

The cyanogenic glycosides belong to the products of secondary metabolism, to the natural products of plants. These compounds are composed of an alpha-hydroxynitrile type aglycone and of a sugar moiety (mostly D-glucose). The distribution of the cyanogenic glycosides (CGs) in the plant kingdom is relatively wide, the number of CG-containing taxa is at least 2500, and a lot of such taxa belong to families Fabaceae, Rosaceae, Linaceae, Compositae and others. Different methods of determination are discussed (including the indirect classical photometrical and the new direct chromatographic ones). The genetic control of cyanogenesis has no unique mechanism, the plants show variation in the amount of the produced HCN. The production of HCN depends on both the biosynthesis of CGs and on the existence (or absence) of its degrading enzymes. The biosynthetic precursors of the CGs are different L-amino acids, these are hydroxylated then the N-hydroxylamino acids are converted to aldoximes, these are turned into nitriles. The last ones are hydroxylated to alpha-hydroxynitriles and then they are glycosilated to CGs. The generation of HCN from CGs is a two step process involving a deglycosilation and a cleavage of the molecule (regulated by beta-glucosidase and alpha-hydroxynitrilase). The tissue level compartmentalisation of CGs and their hydrolysing enzymes prevents large-scale hydrolysis in intact plant tissue. The actual level of CGs is determined by various factors both developmental and ecological ones, which are reviewed too. The last part of the present work demonstrates the biological roles of CGs in plant physiological processes and in plant defence mechanisms as well. The effect of CGs (HCN) on different animals, the symptoms of poisonings are discussed to cows, sheep, donkeys, horses and chicks. Finally, the poisonous effects of cassava (Manihot esculenta) roots are summarised on experimental animals and on the human organism.

Effects of oven-drying tubers of two high-protein sweet potato varieties at different temperatures on their feeding value in broilers

Unpeeled tubers from 2 high-protein varieties of sweet potato (white-fleshed Bosbok, and orange-fleshed Carmel) were chipped and oven-dried at 40, 60, or 80 degrees C, to examine the effects on nutritive value. The dried ground chips were substituted for maize at 500 g/kg and the diets fed to day-old, Ross-1 broiler chicks for 3 weeks. 2. Compared with Carmel, Bosbok had a lower crude protein content (90 V. 138 g/kg DM) and trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA) (3 v. 5 mg of trypsin inhibited per g flour). Processing did not significantly affect TIA, but the lysine and cystine contents were lowered and the starch content raised as the drying temperature increased. However, whereas this was reflected in increased reducing sugars in Carmel, there was no trend in Bosbok. 3. The results of in vitro pancreatin digestibility and total dietary fibre assays showed variety and processing temperature to be significant factors influencing the nutritive value of sweet potato tubers, with a variety temperature interaction also being indicated. The interaction was also observed for weight gain, dry matter intake, water: food intake ratios, excreta water content, presence of bile in excreta and liver weights. The best growth was obtained with Bosbok dried at 60 degrees C , for which liveweights at 21 d were 11% lower than for the maize controls.
