Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most studied endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC), for its large-scale production and disposal, and ubiquitous presence in the environment. It is also known to impart significant phytotoxic effects on almost all aquatic flora including cyanobacteria. Yet, there are limited studies on the responses of symbiotic cyanobacteria i.e. Anabaena azollae - residing inside Azolla filiculoides. In this context, this study aimed to investigate the response of A. azollae upon exposure to different doses and durations of BPA, which marks this as one of the first such studies. Morphological study reaffirmed the infiltration of BPA through the host's physical barrier and induced various anomalies like filament fragmentation, and cellular disruption especially heterocysts in the case of the higher doses of BPA (20, and 30 mg L-1). Additionally, exposure to higher doses further stimulated the antioxidative enzymes, secondary metabolites and stress/defence markers. However, the exaggerated ROS production (nearly 190%-230% O2.- and 557%-783% H2O2) at 30 mg L-1 severely disrupted the membrane integrity, osmotic balance, and reduced essential biomolecules like sugars, proteins and lipid accumulation. Moreover, higher doses of BPA treatment compromised photosynthetic activity by reducing the photosynthetic pigments and phycobiliproteins (PBPs). Conversely, up to the dose of 10 mg L-1, better cellular integrity, improved accumulation of biomolecules, pigments, and ROS detoxification denoted the neutral/positive effect on the symbionts. The lower doses (≥10 mg L-1) also showed positive indications like higher accumulation of biomolecules proteins (16%-30%), lipids (9%-49%), sugar (18%-52%), and pigments like phycobiliproteins (6%-97%), phycocyanins (6%-134%), which seemed to support the biomass of cyanobionts. Moreover, the said doses stimulated the accumulation of phenolics (98%-117%), flavonoids (159%-224%), and released polysaccharides (60%-183%) alongside stress markers like ascorbate and proline indicating the evocation of defense strategy against BPA stress.

Abstract
Amidst the mounting environmental crises and ever-increasing global population, the quest for sustainable food production and resource utilization solutions has taken center stage. Microalgae, with Chlorella species at the forefront, present a promising avenue. They serve as a bountiful protein source and can be conveniently grown in waste streams, thereby tackling food security, environmental sustainability, and economic feasibility. This article embarks on a comprehensive journey through recent research on Chlorella by shedding light on its unique characteristics, its market value, cultivation techniques, and harvesting methods. It also delves into traditional and innovative extraction methods, underscoring the hurdles and breakthroughs in achieving high protein yields from the Chlorella biomass. Moreover, exploration of the protein's nutritional properties, bioactive peptides, and techno-functional attributes, enhance its potential for food applications. Further, this review also examines current market trends in consumer acceptance of this alternative protein and discusses strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in their production. By providing invaluable insights into the current status and future prospects of Chlorella protein, it aspires to make a significant contribution to the ongoing dialogue on sustainable food production and resource management.

Abstract
This study successfully obtained a chlorophyll-deficient mutant of Chlorella pyrenoidosa, named A19, using atmospheric and room temperature plasma mutagenesis technology. Compared to the wild-type strain, the A19 mutant exhibited a faster growth rate and appeared yellow under dark conditions. The content of chlorophyll A and chlorophyll B decreased by 80% and 60%, respectively, while lutein content increased by 16%. A19 also demonstrated improved amino acid quality. Transcriptome analysis revealed upregulation of gene expression levels in glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid cycle pathways, promoting central carbon flow towards enhanced production capacity and accelerating growth. Meanwhile, downregulation of genes regulating enzymes in the chlorophyll synthesis pathway explained the observed color change in the mutant strain. These results confirmed that A19 not only shifts its color to yellow but also exhibits faster growth, higher lutein content, and improved metabolic efficiency, making it a promising additive for feed and food applications while reducing cultivation time.

Abstract
Protein is a fundamental macronutrient in the human diet. It supplies our organisms with essential amino acids, which are needed for the growth and maintenance of cells and tissues. Conventional protein sources, despite their complete amino acid profiles and excellent digestibility, have a proven negative impact on the environment. Furthermore, their production poses many ethical challenges. This review aims to present nutritional, more ethical, and environmentally friendly alternatives that could serve as potential protein sources for the population. The available literature on alternative protein sources has been analyzed. Based on the research conducted, various products have been identified and described, including plant-based protein sources such as soybeans, peas, faba beans, lupins, and hemp seeds; aquatic sources such as algae, microalgae, and water lentils; as well as insect-based and microbial protein sources, and cell-cultured meat. Despite numerous advantages, such as a lower environmental impact, higher ethical standards of production, and beneficial nutritional profiles, alternative protein sources are not without limitations. These include lower bioavailability of certain amino acids, the presence of antinutritional compounds, technological challenges, and issues related to consumer acceptance. Nevertheless, with proper dietary composition, optimization of production processes, and further technological advancements, presented alternatives can constitute valuable and sustainable protein sources for the growing global population.

Abstract
Recent research has focused on issues related to contamination, nutrient availability, and strain selection, but there has been insufficient focus on harvesting research. This study employed an integrated continuous cultivation and harvesting strategy for a Spirulina microalgae biorefinery. The effects of nutrient-deficiency, harvesting ratio, and NaNO3 addition on biomass concentration and productivity and phycocyanin accumulation of Spirulina were investigated. The lowest biomass productivity of 0.015 g/L/day was observed in Spirulina cultivated in NaNO3 deficient medium. A harvesting ratio of 10% showed a consistent range of harvested dry biomass weight (0.20-0.22 g). Addition of 2.50 g/L NaNO3 resulted in a significant increase in C-phycocyanin (C-PC) and allophycocyanin (APC) concentration from 34.37 mg/g to 68.35 and 27.08 to 33.23 mg/g, respectively. Biomass productivity of 1-L and 10-L batch culture was found to be 0.23 g/L/d and 0.21 g/L/d, respectively. Both 1-L and 10-L batch cultures showed a significant increase in phycocyanin accumulation due to the addition of 2.50 g/L of NaNO3. These findings highlight the feasibility of continuous cultivation and optimized harvesting for scalable biomass and phycocyanin production, offering valuable insights for industrial biorefineries that seek to enhance microalgae-based bioactive compound extraction.

Abstract
The increasing global demand for sustainable protein sources necessitates the exploration of alternative solutions beyond traditional livestock and crop-based proteins. Microalgae present a promising alternative due to their high protein content, rapid biomass accumulation, and minimal land and water requirements. Furthermore, their ability to thrive on non-arable land and in wastewater systems enhances their sustainability and resource efficiency. Despite these advantages, scalability and economical feasibility remain major challenges in microalgal protein production. This review explores recent advancements in microalgal protein cultivation and extraction technologies, including pulsed electric field, ultrasound-assisted extraction, enzyme-assisted extraction, and microwave-assisted extraction. These innovative techniques have significantly improved protein extraction efficiency, purity, and sustainability, while addressing cell wall disruption and protein recovery challenges. Additionally, the review examines protein digestibility and bioavailability, particularly in the context of human nutrition and aquafeed applications. A critical analysis of life cycle assessment studies highlights the environmental footprint and economical feasibility of microalgal protein production compared to conventional protein sources. Although microalgal protein production requires significant energy inputs, advancements in biorefinery approaches, carbon dioxide sequestration, and industrial integration can help mitigate these limitations. Finally, this review outlines key challenges and future research directions, emphasizing the need for cost reduction strategies, genetic engineering for enhanced yields, and industrial-scale process optimization. By integrating innovative extraction techniques with biorefinery models, microalgal proteins hold immense potential as a sustainable, high-quality protein source for food, feed, and nutraceutical applications.

Abstract
The co-contamination of microplastics and pharmaceutical pollutants has attracted increasing attention. However, studies on the joint toxicity of pollutants on organisms in aquatic ecosystems are still lacking. This study aimed to investigate the joint toxicity of oxcarbazepine (OXC, 30 mg/L) and polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs, 500 mg/L and particle size of 180 μm) microplastics on microalgae (Chlorella sp. FACHB-9) and the biodegradation of OXC by strain FACHB-9. Compared to the single OXC exposure, the cell density of microalgae was decreased by 38.93% in OXC/PP-MPs co-contamination system, with enhanced oxidative stress and decreased photosynthetic efficiency. Transcriptomic analyses indicated that photosynthetic pathways and TCA cycle pathways were significantly inhibited, while DNA damage repair pathways were up regulated in microalgae co-exposed to OXC and PP-MPs. Moreover, strain FACHB-9 showed a remarkable degradation effect (91.61% and 86.27%) on OXC in single and mixture group, respectively. These findings significantly expanded the existing knowledge on the joint toxicity of pollutants on microalgae, indicating prospective promise of microalgae for the bioremediation of polluted aquatic environments.

Abstract
Microalgae, as photosynthetic microorganisms, offer a sustainable source of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, pigments, vitamins, and antioxidants. Leveraging their advantages, such as fast growth, CO2 fixation, cultivation without arable land, and wastewater utilisation, microalgae can produce a diverse range of compounds. The extracted products find applications in bioenergy, animal feed, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and food industries. The selection of microalgal species is crucial, and their biochemical composition varies during growth phases influenced by environmental factors like light, salinity, temperature, and nutrients. Manipulating growth conditions shapes biomass composition, optimising the production of target compounds. This review synthesises research from 2019 onwards, focusing on stress induction and two-stage cultivation in microalgal strategies. This review takes a broader approach, addressing the effects of various operating conditions on a range of biochemical compounds. It explores the impact of operational parameters (light, nutrient availability, salinity, temperature) on biomass composition, elucidating microalgal mechanisms. Challenges include species-specific responses, maintaining stable conditions, and scale-up complexities. A two-stage approach balances biomass productivity and compound yield. Overcoming challenges involves improving upstream and downstream processes, developing sophisticated monitoring systems, and conducting further modelling work. Future efforts should concentrate on strain engineering and refined monitoring, facilitating real-time adjustments for optimal compound accumulation. Moreover, conducting large-scale experiments is essential to evaluate the feasibility and sustainability of the process through techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessments.

Abstract
Aquatic biomass, particularly microalgae and duckweed, presents a promising and sustainable alternative source of plant-based protein and bioactive compounds for food and feed applications. This review highlights the nutritional potential of these aquatic species, focusing on their high protein content, rapid growth rates, and adaptability to nonarable environments. Microalgae, such as Chlorella and Arthrospira spp., and duckweed, such as Lemna minor, are evaluated for their functional food applications, including their roles as protein supplements, bioactive components, antioxidants, and emulsifiers in food formulations. The study also examines their environmental benefits, including wastewater bioremediation, nutrient recycling, and greenhouse gas mitigation, which contribute to a more sustainable agricultural system. Technological advancements in the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of microalgae and duckweed are discussed to enhance their scalability and economic feasibility in food and feed production. The findings suggest that integrating microalgae and duckweed into agricultural and food systems can significantly improve food security, nutritional outcomes, and sustainability. Future research should focus on optimizing cultivation efficiencies, advancing protein extraction techniques, and expanding the applications of aquatic biomass in various food products.

Abstract
The potential of sustainably sourced Spirulina protein (SP), and SP nanoparticles (SPNP) obtained by heating gelation and ultrasound treatment as functional carriers for curcumin (Cur) was studied. The antioxidant activity, encapsulation performance, stability and digestive properties of the delivery system were analyzed. Compared with SP, SPNP exhibited higher hydrophobicity, and its antioxidant capacity was enhanced due to increased exposure of chromophores. The encapsulation performance of Cur-loaded complexes was influenced by the protein-Cur mass ratio, and the encapsulation efficiency of SPNP was significantly higher than that of SP (p < 0.05). Because of the better binding affinity, SPNP-Cur complexes showed improved thermal stability and UV protection effect. SP and SPNP all exhibited antioxidant synergism with Cur, and the antioxidant efficiency was closely related to pH, dissociating solvents, UV irradiation and digestion. The bioaccessibility of Cur was also greatly improved. It suggests that Spirulina protein may be an ideal carrier for delivering nutraceutical compounds.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been a notable surge in the development and adoption of edible algae protein-based sustainable food packaging, which presents a promising alternative to traditional materials due to its biodegradability, renewability, and minimal environmental impact. Hence, this review aims to emphasize the sources, cultivation, and downstream potential of algal protein and protein complexes. Moreover, it comprehensively examines the advancements in utilizing protein complexes for smart and active packaging applications, while also addressing the challenges that must be overcome for the widespread commercial adoption of algal proteins to meet industry 4.0. The review revealed that the diversity of algae species and their sustainable cultivation methods offers a promising alternative to traditional protein sources. Being vegan source with higher photosynthetic conversion efficiency and reduced growth cycle has permitted the proposition of algae as proteins of the future. The unique combination of techno-functional combined with bio-functional properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial response have captured the sustainable groups to invest considerable research and promote the innovations in algal proteins. Food packaging research has increasingly benefited by the excellent gas barrier property and superior mechanical strength of algal proteins either stand alone or in synergy with other biodegradable polymers. Advanced packaging functionality such as freshness monitoring and active preservation techniques has been explored and needs considerable characterization for commercial advancement. Overall, while algal proteins show promising downstream potential in various industries aligned with Industry 4.0 principles, their broader adoption hinges on overcoming these barriers through continued innovation and strategic development.

Abstract
In the present investigation, 13% ± 0.84 of the extracted and purified phycocyanin from Phormidium versicolor was obtained, with a purity of 0.69 following dialysis. FT-IR analysis of purified phycocyanin revealed stretching vibration peaks in the profiles of the functional groups of N-H, O-H, C = O, N-H, C = O, and C = NH+. The phycocyanin had a significant DPPH radical scavenging ability (IC50 = 0.6 ± 0.02 mg mL-1) confirmed with FRAP assay, and it exhibited microbiological activity between 1.25 and 2.5 mg mL-1 against Candida albicans, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterococcus faecalis. Phycocyanin showed no cytotoxic and improved the viability of HEK-293. It was added to skin cream at a rate of 6 mg g-1 because of its significant yield extraction and biological activity. At 10 mg mL-1, a bactericidal activity has been noted, inhibiting the growth of bacteria responsible for inflammatory skin conditions. For 60 days, the emulsion's stability was monitored at room temperature, 25 °C, and 45 °C. The appearance of the batch kept at 45 °C was changed to beige after 7 days, while the others were kept for 15 days. Skin creams enhanced with phycocyanin were found to be stable over the course of storage at both room temperature and 25 °C, based on centrifugation stability analysis. But starting on the fifteenth day, the items kept at 45 °C were unstable. Thus, the current study's findings are in favor of using phycocyanin as an antioxidant in cosmetic products. However, further investigation is required before using it in clinical trials. KEY POINTS: • Phycocyanin extraction field (13%) is particularly significant compared to other cyanobacteria. • Phycocyanin at 0.6 μg g-1 in skin cream fights bacteria in skin inflammation. • Phycocyanin-enriched cream was stable at room temp, 25 °C, and unstable at 45 °C after day 15.

Abstract
Herein, we extracted proteins from four microalgae: Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (CHR), Euglena gracilis (EUG), Spirulina platensis (SPP), and Spirulina maxima (SPM). Subsequently, their physicochemical and functional properties, as well as air-water interface adsorption behavior were investigated. Results demonstrated that the solubility and emulsifying properties of these proteins were significantly affected by pH, with minimum values observed near their isoelectric point (3.5) and maximum values at pH 11.0. Interestingly, the emulsifying properties of the four proteins were superior to soy protein isolate in the pH range of 3.0-7.0, indicating that these microalgae proteins may be suitable for applying as emulsifiers in foods. EUG exhibited the highest water/oil binding capacity, emulsifying activity, and emulsifying stability, which were attributed to its high surface hydrophobicity and β-sheet content, as well as small particle size. Dynamic adsorption behavior analysis illustrated that EUG showed faster diffusion and rearrangement rates, as well as a higher final equilibrated surface pressure value, contributing to its highest foaming capacity and foaming stability. This study greatly enhances the understanding of microalgae proteins and is expected to establish a theoretical foundation for developing novel protein resources that can be utilized in the foamed and emulsion-based food fabrication, including whipped cream and functional beverages.

Abstract
Algal slurry (AS) generated from microalgae-based wastewater treatment processes holds significant potential for carboxylic acids production through anaerobic digestion (AD), which have emerged as promising products due to their high energy density, great economic value, and versatile applications. A comprehensive analysis of the pathways and optimization strategies for producing short-chain (SCCAs) and medium-chain (MCCAs) carboxylic acids using AS substrates is presented in this review. It begins by introducing and comparing two types of microalgae-based wastewater treatment processes: the microalgae process and the microalgal-bacterial consortia process. Afterwards, the review systematically examines the metabolic pathways involved in SCCAs and MCCAs production using AS substrates. Moreover, pretreatment strategies for enhancing the release of organic matter are critically discussed. Ultimately, specific emphasis is placed on addressing technical challenges and discussing future perspectives. This review provides a deeper understanding of the mechanisms and strategies involved in carboxylic acids production from wastewater-generated AS.

Abstract
Microalgae are widely recognized for their capacity to generate value-added products in a variety of sectors, including the pharmaceutical and food industries, bioenergy industries and wastewater industries. The quality of a microalga is significantly influenced by its proliferation. Along with growth, the biochemical profile may also vary based on the nutrient that is supplemented. The majority of the supplemented nutrients utilized are not in a functional state, as they are typically extracted in liquid form or pretreated prior to use. Parallel to numerous commonly applied pretreatment processes, including chemical, mechanical and biological, thermal pretreatment appears to receive less attention. Hence it is crucial to comprehend the potential for thermal pretreatment as well as its mechanism in militating the solid waste to release additional nutrients in order to enhance the biochemical profile of microalgae. The current review takes a closer look at the impact of various thermal pretreatments on solid waste on influencing microalgal performance in terms of their overall biochemical profiles such as carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. This approach is likely to enhance the circular economy by utilizing waste products and effectively closing the loop on waste. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Microalgae are a promising sustainable food source with high nutritional value and environmental benefits. This study investigated the presence of toxic metals and rare earth elements (REEs) in 68 microalgal-based food products and conducted a probabilistic risk assessment to evaluate potential health risks. The findings revealed high detection rates of REEs (80.96% to 100%) and heavy metals (83.82% to 100%), with REE concentrations ranging from 0.0055 to 0.5207 mg/kg. Heavy metals were detected at the following average concentrations: As (2.80 mg/kg) > Cr (1.27 mg/kg) > Pb (0.30 mg/kg) > Cd (0.20 mg/kg) > Hg (0.01 mg/kg). Carcinogenic risk analysis for Cd (3.004 × 10-3), Cr (1.484 × 10-3), and As (1.1283 × 10-2) indicated that 95th percentile values exceeded established safety thresholds (10-4). These findings highlight the critical need for stringent monitoring and the establishment of comprehensive regulatory frameworks for the safety of novel microalgae foods.

Abstract
Microalgae offer a promising alternative for sustainable nutritional supplements and functional food ingredients and hold potential to meet the growing demand for nutritious and eco-friendly food alternatives. With the escalating impacts of global climate change and increasing human activities, microalgal production must be enhanced by reducing freshwater and land use and minimizing carbon emissions. The advent of 3D printing offers novel opportunities for optimizing microalgae production, though it faces challenges such as high production costs and scalability concerns. This work aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in 3D-printed bioreactors for microalgal production, focusing on 3D printing techniques, bio-ink types, and their applications across environmental, food, and medical fields. This review highlights the benefits of 3D-printed bioreactors, including improved mass transfer, optimized light exposure, enhanced biomass yield, and augmented photosynthesis. Current challenges and future directions of 3D printing in microalgal production are also discussed to offer new insights into boosting microalgal cultivation efficiency for expanded applications.

Abstract
Undernutrition is an important global health problem, especially in children and older adults. Both reversal of maternal and child undernutrition and heathy ageing have become United Nations-supported global initiatives, leading to increased attention to nutritional interventions targeting undernutrition. One feasible option is microalgae, the precursor of all terrestrial plants. Most commercially farmed microalgae are photosynthetic single-celled organisms producing organic carbon compounds and oxygen. This review will discuss commercial opportunities to grow microalgae. Microalgae produce lipids (including omega-3 fatty acids), proteins, carbohydrates, pigments and micronutrients and so can provide a suitable and underutilised alternative for addressing undernutrition. The health benefits of nutrients derived from microalgae have been identified, and thus they are suitable candidates for addressing nutritional issues globally. This review will discuss the potential benefits of microalgae-derived nutrients and opportunities for microalgae to be converted into food products. The advantages of microalgae cultivation include that it does not need arable land or pesticides. Additionally, most species of microalgae are still unexplored, presenting options for further development. Further, the usefulness of microalgae for other purposes such as bioremediation and biofuels will increase the knowledge of these microorganisms, allowing the development of more efficient production of these microalgae as nutritional interventions.

Abstract
Recent breakthroughs emphasized the considerable potential of microalgae as a sustainable protein source. Microalgae are regarded as a substitute for protein-rich foods because of their high protein and amino acid content. However, despite their nutritional value, microalgae cannot be easily digested by humans due to the presence of cell walls. In the subsequent sections, protein extraction technology, the overview of the inherent challenges of the process, and the summary of the factors affecting protein extraction and utilization have been deliberated. Moreover, the review inspected the formation of proteolytic products, highlighting their diverse bioactivities, including antioxidant, antihypertensive, and immunomodulatory activities. Finally, the discussion extended to the emerging microalgal protein sourced foods, such as baked goods and nutritional supplements, as well as the sensory and marketing challenges encountered in the production of microalgal protein foods. The lack of consumer awareness about the health benefits of microalgae complicates its acceptance in the market. Long-standing challenges, such as high production costs, persist. Currently, multi-product utilization strategies are being developed to improve the economic viability of microalgae. By integrating economic, environmental, and social factors, microalgae protein can be sustainably developed to provide a reliable source of raw materials for the future food industry.

Abstract
As the world's population and income levels continue to rise, there is a substantial increase in the demand for meat, which poses significant environmental challenges due to large-scale livestock production. This review explores the potential of microalgae as a sustainable protein source for meat analogues. The nutritional composition, functional properties, and environmental advantages of microalgae are analyzed. Additionally, current obstacles to large-scale microalgal food production are addressed, such as strain development, contamination risks, water usage, and downstream processing. The challenges associated with creating meat-like textures and flavors using techniques like extrusion and emulsion formation with microalgae are also examined. Lastly, considerations related to consumer acceptance, marketing, and regulation are summarized. By focusing on improvements in cultivation, structure, sensory attributes, and affordability, microalgae demonstrate promise as a transformative and eco-friendly protein source to enhance the next generation of meat alternatives.

Abstract
Raising attentions have focused on how to alleviate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from orchard system while simultaneously increase fruit production. Microalgae-based biofertilizer represents a promising resource for improving soil fertility and higher productivity. However, the effects of microalgae application more especially live microalgae on GHG emissions are understudied. In this study, fruit yield and quality, GHG emissions, as well as soil organic carbon and nitrogen fractions were examined in a hawthorn orchard, under the effects of live microalgae-based biofertilizer applied at three doses and two modes. Compared with conventional fertilization, microalgae improved hawthorn yield by 15.7%-29.6% with a maximal increment at medium dose by root application, and significantly increased soluble and reducing sugars contents at high dose. While microalgae did not increase GHG emissions except for nitrous oxide at high dose by root application, instead it significantly increased methane uptake by 1.5-2.3 times in root application. In addition, microalgae showed an increasing trend in soil organic carbon content, and significantly increased the contents of soil dissolved organic carbon and microbial biomass carbon, as well as soil ammonium nitrogen and dissolved organic nitrogen at medium dose with root application. Overall, the results indicated that the live microalgae could be used as a green biofertilizer for improving fruit yield without increasing GHG emissions intensity and the comprehensive greenhouse effect, in particular at medium dose with root application. We presume that if lowering chemical fertilizer rates, application of the live microalgae-based biofertilizer may help to reduce nitrous oxide emissions without compromising fruit yield and quality.

Abstract
India, a global leader in agriculture, faces sustainability challenges in feeding its population. Although primarily a vegetarian population, the consumption of animal derived proteins has tremendously increased in recent years. Excessive dependency on animal proteins is not environmentally sustainable, necessitating the identification of alternative smart proteins. Smart proteins are environmentally benign and mimic the properties of animal proteins (dairy, egg and meat) and are derived from plant proteins, microbial fermentation, insects and cell culture meat (CCM) processes. This review critically evaluates the technological, safety, and sustainability challenges involved in production of smart proteins and their consumer acceptance from Indian context. Under current circumstances, plant-based proteins are most favorable; however, limited land availability and impending climate change makes them unsustainable in the long run. CCM is unaffordable with high input costs limiting its commercialization in near future. Microbial-derived proteins could be the most sustainable option for future owing to higher productivity and ability to grow on low-cost substrates. A circular economy approach integrating agri-horti waste valorization and C1 substrate synthesis with microbial biomass production offer economic viability. Considering the use of novel additives and processing techniques, evaluation of safety, allergenicity, and bioavailability of smart protein products is necessary before large-scale adoption.

Abstract
Antibiotics are frequently detected in surface water and pose potential threats to organisms in aquatic ecosystem such as microalgae. The occurrence of biphasic dose responses raised the possibility of stimulation of microalgal biomass by antibiotics at environmental-relevant concentration and caused potential ecological risk such as algal bloom. However, the underlying mechanisms of low concentration-induced hormetic effects are not well understood. In this study, we evaluated the hormesis of ofloxacin on Chlorella pyrenoidosa under environmental-relevant concentration and long-term exposure. Results showed the hormetic effects of ofloxacin on cell density and carbon fixation rate (RC). The predicted maximum promotion was 17.45 % by 16.84 μg/L and 20.08 % by 15.78 μg/L at 21 d, respectively. The predicted maximum concentration of non-effect on cell density and RC at 21 d was 3.24 mg/L and 1.44 mg/L, respectively. Ofloxacin induced the mobilization of pigments and antioxidant enzymes to deal with oxidative stress. PCA analysis revealed Chl-a/Chl-b could act as a more sensitive biomarker under acute exposure while chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were in favor of monitoring long-term implication. The hormesis in increased secretion of extracellular organic matters was regarded as a defensive mechanism and accelerated indirect photodegradation of ofloxacin. Bioremoval was dominant and related to biomass accumulation in the total dissipation while abiotic removal appeared slight contributions. This study provided new insights into the understanding of hormesis of microalgae induced by antibiotics.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate three species of Dunaliella microalgae (Dunaliella salina, Dunaliella viridis, and Dunaliella sp.) indigenous to Iran as new sources of natural chemical and bioactive compounds for exploring pharmaceutical and nutraceutical potential applications. The results showed that the fat, carbohydrate (mono- and di-saccharide), dietary fiber, and protein content of Dunaliella were in the range of 13.19-25.02, 7.59-12.37, 42.10-48.82, and 17.68-22.50 (%), respectively. Dunaliella salina contained a pigment fraction of 11.50%, which was largely composed of carotenoid (7.41%) and chlorophyll (4.09%). Antioxidant capacity and inhibition of 2,2-diphenyl-1-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) of Dunaliella salina were 34.54 mg/1000 g and 55.63%, respectively. The lipid profile also revealed that three isolated Dunaliella are remarkable sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids (25.42%-40.13%). Further, the ratios of ∑n-3/∑n-6 (2.79%), docosahexaenoic acid (6.15%), and eicosapentaenoic acid (11.26%) were the highest in Dunaliella salina. The results, thus, proved that Dunaliella spp., especially Dunaliella salina (IBRC-M 50030), which originates from a lake in Semnan province, Iran, has potential applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries due to its appropriate biopigment, protein, lipid, antioxidant activity, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid, and eicosapentaenoic acid.

Abstract
The current consumption trends, combined with the expected demographic growth in the coming years, call for a protein transition, i.e., the partial substitution of animal protein-rich foods with foods rich in proteins produced in a more sustainable way. Here, we have discussed some of the most common and promising protein sources alternative to animal proteins, namely: legumes, insects, and microorganisms (including microalgae and fungi). The primary objective was to assess their nutritional quality through the collection of digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS) values available in the scientific literature. Protein digestibility corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) values have been used where DIAAS values were not available. The ecological impact of each protein source, its nutritional quality and the potential applications in traditional foods or novel food concepts like meat analogues are also discussed. The data collected show that DIAAS values for animal proteins are higher than all the other protein sources. Soybean proteins, mycoproteins and proteins of some insects present relatively high DIAAS (or PDCAAS) values and must be considered proteins of good quality. This review also highlights the lack of DIAAS values for many potentially promising protein sources and the variability induced by the way the proteins are processed.

Abstract
The consumer demand for protein rich foods urges the exploration for novel products of natural origin. Algae can be considered as a gold mine of different bioactive compounds, among which protein is distributed in significant amounts i.e., around 30% and can even reach to 55-60% in some cyanobacteria. Bakery and dairy products are extensively consumed worldwide due to product diversification and innovation. However, incorporation of algae biomass can lead to the development of green colour and fishy flavour that usually is not accepted in such products. Therefore, isolation and application of algae-derived proteins opens a new door for food industry. The present review provides a comprehensive understanding of incorporation of algae as a protein-rich ingredient in bakery and dairy products. The paper provides a deep insight for all the possible recent trends related to production and extraction of algae proteins accompanied by their incorporation in bakery and dairy foods.

Abstract
The livestock sector is responsible for a significant amount of wastewater globally. The microalgal-bacterial consortium (MBC) treatment has gained increasing attention as it is able to eliminate pollutants to yield value-added microalgal products. This review offers a critical discussion of the source of pollutants from livestock wastewater and the environmental impact of these pollutants. It also discusses the interactions between microalgae and bacteria in treatment systems and natural habitats in detail. The effects on MBC on the removal of various pollutants (conventional and emerging) are highlighted, focusing specifically on analysis of the removal mechanisms. Notably, the various influencing factors are classified into internal, external, and operating factors, and the mutual feedback relationships between them and the target (removal efficiency and biomass) have been thoroughly analysed. Finally, a wastewater recycling treatment model based on MBC is proposed for the construction of a green livestock farm, and the application value of various microalgal products has been analysed. The overall aim was to indicate that the use of MBC can provide cost-effective and eco-friendly approaches for the treatment of livestock wastewater, thereby advancing the path toward a promising microalgal-bacterial-based technology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The oxidative stress induced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a pivotal factor in skin aging and can even contribute to the development of skin cancer. AIM This study explored the antioxidant effect and mechanism of water-soluble intracellular extract (WIE) of Desmodesmus sp.YT (YT), aiming to develop a natural antioxidant suitable for incorporation into cosmetics. METHODS The study evaluated the scavenging capacity of YT-WIE against free radicals and assessed its impact on human skin fibroblasts (HSF) cell viability and UV resistance using Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8). Transcriptome sequencing was employed to elucidate the mechanism of action, while RT-qPCR and western blot were used to validate the expression of key genes. RESULTS YT-WIE displayed robust antioxidant activity, demonstrating potent scavenging abilities against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH; IC50 = 0.55 mg mL-1), 2,2'-Azino-bis (3 ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid; ABTS; IC50 = 3.11 mg mL-1), Hydroxyl (·OH; IC50 = 2.21 mg mL-1), and Superoxide anion (O2 •-; IC50 = 0.98 mg mL-1). Furthermore, compared to the control group, the YT-WIE group exhibited an 89.30% enhancement in HSF viability and a 44.63% increase in survival rate post-UV irradiation. Significant upregulation of antioxidant genes (GCLC, GCLM, TXNRD1, HMOX1, NQO1) was observed with YT-WIE treatment at 400 μg mL-1, with fold increases ranging from 1.13 to 5.85 times. CONCLUSION YT-WIE demonstrated considerable potential as an antioxidant, shielding human cells from undue oxidative stress triggered by external stimuli such as UV radiation. This suggests its promising application in cosmetics antioxidants.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review uses the hierarchy of evidence as a framework to critically evaluate the effect of long chain n -3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC n -3 PUFA) ingestion alone, or as an adjunctive intervention to resistance training, on muscle health-related outcomes in healthy and clinical older adult populations. RECENT FINDINGS Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials consistently report small, but clinically-relevant, effects of LC n -3 PUFA ingestion on strength outcomes, whereas mixed findings have been reported regarding changes in muscle mass and physical function. Cohort studies indicate an association between higher dietary LC n -3 PUFA intake and reduced likelihood of a sarcopenia diagnosis. Acute metabolic studies provide limited evidence for an effect of LC n -3 PUFA ingestion alone, or in combination with resistance training, on free-living integrated rates of MPS, static markers of muscle protein breakdown, or satellite cell activation in healthy older adults. SUMMARY Recent data supports the efficacy of LCn-3 PUFA ingestion to facilitate small, but clinically relevant, improvements in muscle strength in healthy and clinical older adult populations. The mechanism(s) that underpin the action of LC n -3 PUFA in promoting strength outcomes remain unknown, but likely relate to neuromuscular function.

Abstract
To support a global population of ~10 billion people in 2050, dietary protein demand is forecast to increase 32-78% compared to 2017, requiring significantly higher planetary resources. Microalgae are an attractive sustainable protein source compared with current plant and animal sources. Benefits include mass scalability, low CO2 emissions, and significantly reduced land and freshwater use per unit protein. Microalgae are already used as food products and numerous species exhibit high total protein contents and well-balanced essential amino acid (EAA) compositions for human dietary requirements. Microalgae proteins are also bioavailable for human digestion, and downstream processing steps are likely to further enhance protein digestibility. Species, cultivation, and process/product optimisation are actively being developed to enhance their nutritional, social, and environmental benefits.

Abstract
Salt lakes are significant components of global inland waters. Salt lake (SL) water can provide precious mineral resource for microbial growth. The prospect of utilizing diluted SL water for cultivation of a terrestrial oil-producing microalga Vischeria sp. WL1 was evaluated under laboratory conditions. Based on the detected mineral element composition, the water from Gouchi Salt Lake was diluted 2, 4, 6 and 8 folds and used with supplementation of additional nitrogen, phosphorus and iron (SL+ water). It was found that 4 folds diluted SL+ water was most favorable for biomass and oil production. When cultivated in this condition, Vischeria sp. WL1 gained a biomass yield of 0.82 g L-1 and an oil yield of 0.56 g L-1 after 24 days of cultivation, which is comparable to the optimum productivity we previously established. In addition, total monounsaturated fatty acid contents (64.4∼68.1 %) of the oils resulted from cultures in diluted SL+waters were higher than that in the control (55.5 %). It was also noteworthy that in all these cultures the oil contents (652.0∼681.0 mg g-1) accounted for the most of the biomass, which are far more than the protein and starch contents. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using SL water as a cost-effective mineral resource to cultivate microalgae for biomass and oil production.

Abstract
Microalgae are receiving increased attention in the food sector as a sustainable ingredient due to their high protein content and nutritional value. They contain up to 70% proteins with the presence of all 20 essential amino acids, thus fulfilling human dietary requirements. Microalgae are considered sustainable and environmentally friendly compared to traditional protein sources as they require less land and a reduced amount of water for cultivation. Although microalgae's potential in nutritional quality and functional properties is well documented, no reviews have considered an in-depth analysis of the pros and cons of their addition to foods. The present work discusses recent findings on microalgae with respect to their protein content and nutritional quality, placing a special focus on formulated food products containing microalgae proteins. Several challenges are encountered in the production, processing, and commercialization of foods containing microalgae proteins. Solutions presented in recent studies highlight the future research and directions necessary to provide solutions for consumer acceptability of microalgae proteins and derived products.

Abstract
Microalgae is a sustainable alternative source to traditional proteins. Existing pretreatment methods for protein extraction from microalgae still lack scalability, are uneconomical and inefficient. Herein, high shear mixing (HSM) was applied to disrupt the rigid cell walls and was found to assist in protein release from microalgae. This study integrates HSM in liquid biphasic system with seven parameters being investigated on extraction efficiency (EE) and protein yield (Y). The highest EE and Y obtained are 96.83 ± 0.47 % and 40.98 ± 1.27 %, respectively, using 30% w/v K3PO4 salt, 60 % v/v alcohol, volume ratio of 1:1 and 0.5 % w/v biomass loading under shearing rate of 16,000 rpm for 1 min.

Abstract
The rapidly increasing population and climate change pose a great threat to our current food systems. Moreover, the high usage of animal-based and plant-based protein has its drawbacks, as these nutritional sources require many hectares of land and water, are affected by seasonal variations, are costly, and contribute to environmental pollution. Single-cell proteins (SCPs) are gaining a lot of research interest due to their remarkable properties, such as their high protein content that is comparable with other protein sources; low requirements for land and water; low carbon footprint; and short production period. This review explores the use of food waste as a sustainable feedstock for the advancement of SCP processes. It discusses SCP studies that exploit food waste as a substrate, alongside the biocatalysts (bacteria, fungi, yeast, and microalgae) that are used. The operational setpoint conditions governing SCP yields and SCP fermentation routes are elucidated as well. This review also demonstrates how the biorefinery concept is implemented in the literature to improve the economic potential of "waste-to-protein" innovations, as this leads to the establishment of multiproduct value chains. A short section that discusses the South African SCP scenario is also included. The technical and economic hurdles facing second-generation SCP processes are also discussed, together with future perspectives. Therefore, SCP technologies could play a crucial role in the acceleration of a "sustainable protein market", and in tackling the global hunger crisis.

Abstract
Microalgal species from sewage treatment plant were identified by 18S rRNA sequencing and were explored for total lipids, carbohydrate, and protein contents, to serve as a potential candidate for biorefinery. Seven unicellular microalgae were identified as Chlorella sorokiniana, Dictyosphaerium sp., Graesiella emersonii belonging to Chlorellaceae and Scenedesmus sp., Desmodesmus sp., Tetranephris brasiliensis, and Coelastrella sp. belonging to Scenedesmaceae family. Biochemical assessment of all isolates revealed total lipid content from 17.49 ± 1.41 to 47.35 ± 0.61% w/w, total carbohydrate content from 12.82 ± 0.19 to 64.29 ± 0.63% w/w, and total protein content from 8.55 ± 0.19 to 16.65 ± 0.20% w/w. FAME analysis of extracted lipid was found to be rich in Hexadecane (C16:0), Tetradecane (C17:0), Octadecane (C18:0), Eicosane (C20:0), Tetracosane (C24:0), Pentacosane (C25:0) fatty acids, the presence of which makes excellent candidate for biodiesel. Being rich in lipid, microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana, Coelastrella sp., and Scenedesmus sp. have high potential for biofuels. Due to the presence of high protein content, Scenedesmus sp. and Chlorella sorokiniana can serve as food or feed supplement, whereas the high carbohydrate content of Dictyosphaerium sp., Coelastrella sp., and Scenedesmus sp. makes them an ideal candidate for fermentative production of alcohol and organic acids. Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus sp., being dominant microalgae across all seasons, demonstrate remarkable resilience for their cultivation in sewage water and utilization of biomass in biorefineries.

Abstract
The main difficulties when analyzing pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in solid environmental samples is the complexity of the samples and the low concentration levels of such pollutants. Most efforts are focused in achieving good analytical performance parameters such as high recoveries or low detection limits without considering if the methods are environmentally friendly. In this work, the main tools proposed for assessing the greenness of analytical methodologies (Analytical Eco-scale, Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI), and Analytical GREEnness metric (AGREE)) have been applied to nine analytical procedures that include recent important analytical tendencies. The three metrics identified the paper spray ionization method as the greenest procedure since it used untreated samples for direct mass spectrometry analysis. Using Analytical Eco-scale, most of the evaluated procedures were rated as "acceptable green". However, the use of internal standards resulted key in the environmental impact of the method which provided contradictory results versus other metrics. GAPI found greenness similarities between most of selected methods, hindering a greenness classification. AGREE allowed the weighting of each evaluation criterion providing a greenness ranking. The application of each metric detecting their weaknesses and strengths was discussed. The incorporation of validation analytical features in greenness metrics was a gap revealed.

Abstract
Recycling and reusing of nutrient media in microalgal cultivation are important strategies to reduce water consumption and nutrient costs. However, these approaches have limitations, e.g., a decrease in biomass production, (because as reused media can inhibit biomass growth). To address these limitations, we applied a novel membrane filtration‒electrolysis‒ultraviolet hybrid water treatment method capable of laboratory-to-large-scale operation to increase biomass productivity and enable nutrient medium disinfection and recycling. In laboratory-scale experiments, electrolysis effectively remove the biological contaminants from the spent nutrient medium, resulting in a high on-site removal efficiency of dissolved organic carbon (DOC; 80.3 ± 5 %) and disinfection (99.5 ± 0.2 %). Compared to the results for the recycling of nutrient medium without water treatment, electrolysis resulted in a 1.5-fold increase in biomass production, which was attributable to the removal of biological inhibitors from electrochemically produced oxidants (mainly OCl-). In scaled-up applications, the hybrid system improved the quality of the recycled nutrient medium, with 85 ± 2 % turbidity removal, 75 ± 3 % DOC removal, and 99.5 ± 2 % disinfection efficiency, which was beneficial for biomass growth by removing biological inhibitors. After applying the hybrid water treatment method, we achieved a Spirulina biomass production of 0.47 ± 0.03 g L-1, similar to that obtained using a fresh medium (0.53 ± 0.02 g L-1). The on-site disinfection process described herein is practical and offers a cost-saving and environmental friendly alternative for nutrient medium recycling and reusing water in mass and sustainable cultivation of microalgae.

Abstract
To facilitate biomolecules extraction and bioaccessibility of Chlorella pyrenoidosa, a novel industry-scale microfluidization (ISM) was used to disrupt cells effectively. Microscope images showed ISM damaged cell integrity, disorganized cell wall structure, pulverized cell membrane and promoted the release of intracellular components. The decrease of particle size and the increase of ζ-potential also confirmed the cell disruption. The cell breakage ratio of sample treated at 120 MPa was 98%. Compared with untreated samples, total soluble solid content and protein extraction rate of the sample treated at 120 MPa increased by 2 °Brix and 12%. Protein was degraded by ISM, the release of intracellular protein and the reduction of molecular weight increased protein digestibility by 20% in in vitro gastric phase. Lipid yield and chlorophyll b content were also increased by ISM. These results provided a new solution to cell disruption of microalgae and expanded the application field of ISM.

Abstract
Microalgae are a rich resource of lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and pigments with nutritional and health benefits. They increasingly find use as ingredients in functional foods and feeds as well as in cosmetics and agricultural products including biostimulants. One of their distinct advantages is their ability to grow on wastewaters and other waste streams, and they are considered an environmentally friendly and cheap method to recover nutrients and remove pollutants from the environment. However, there are limits concerning their applications if grown on certain waste streams. Within, we collate an overview of existing algal applications and current market scenarios for microalgal products as foods and feeds along with relevant legislative requirements concerning their use in Europe and the United States. Microalgal compounds of interest and their extraction and processing methodologies are summarized, and the benefits and caveats of microalgae cultivated in various waste streams and their applications are discussed.

Abstract
In terrestrial plants, strigolactones act as multifunctional endo- and exo-signals. On microalgae, the strigolactones determine akin effects: induce symbiosis formation with fungi and bacteria and enhance photosynthesis efficiency and accumulation of biomass. This work aims to synthesize and identify strigolactone mimics that promote photosynthesis and biomass accumulation in microalgae with biotechnological potential. Novel strigolactone mimics easily accessible in significant amounts were prepared and fully characterized. The first two novel compounds contain 3,5-disubstituted aryloxy moieties connected to the bioactive furan-2-one ring. In the second group of compounds, a benzothiazole ring is connected directly through the cyclic nitrogen atom to the bioactive furan-2-one ring. The novel strigolactone mimics were tested on Chlorella sorokiniana NIVA-CHL 176. All tested strigolactones increased the accumulation of chlorophyll b in microalgae biomass. The SL-F3 mimic, 3-(4-methyl-5-oxo-2,5-dihydrofuran-2-yl)-3H-benzothiazol-2-one (7), proved the most efficient. This compound, applied at a concentration of 10-7 M, determined a significant biomass accumulation, higher by more than 15% compared to untreated control, and improved the quantum yield efficiency of photosystem II. SL-F2 mimic, 5-(3,5-dibromophenoxy)-3-methyl-5H-furan-2-one (4), applied at a concentration of 10-9 M, improved protein production and slightly stimulated biomass accumulation. Potential utilization of the new strigolactone mimics as microalgae biostimulants is discussed.

Abstract
Euglena gracilis is one of the few permitted edible microalgae. Considering consumer acceptance, E. gracilis grown heterotrophically with yellow appearances have wider food industrial applications such as producing meat analogs than green cells. However, there is much room to improve the protein content of heterotrophic culture cells. In this study, the effects of nitrogen sources, temperature, initial pH, and C/N ratios on the protein production of E. gracilis were evaluated under heterotrophic cultivation. These results indicated that ammonium sulfate was the optimal nitrogen source for protein production. The protein content of E. gracilis cultured by ammonium sulfate increased by 113% and 44.7% compared with that cultured by yeast extract and monosodium glutamate, respectively. The manipulation of the low C/N ratio further improved E. gracilis protein content to 66.10% (w/w), which was 1.6-fold of that in the C/N = 25 group. Additionally, amino acid analysis revealed that the nitrogen-to-protein conversion factor (NTP) could be affected by nitrogen sources. A superior essential amino acid index (EAAI) of 1.62 and a balanced amino acid profile further confirmed the high nutritional value of E. gracilis protein fed by ammonium sulfate. This study highlighted the vast potency of heterotrophic cultured E. gracilis as an alternative dietary protein source.

Abstract
The production of biomolecules by microalgae has a wide range of applications in the development of various materials and products, such as biodiesel, food supplements, and cosmetics. Microalgae biomass can be produced using waste and in a smaller space than other types of crops (e.g., soja, corn), which shows microalgae's great potential as a source of biomass. Among the produced biomolecules of greatest interest are carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and fatty acids. In this study, the production of these biomolecules was determined in two strains of microalgae (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Chlorella vulgaris) when exposed to different concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. Results show a significant microalgal growth (3.69 g L-1) and carbohydrates (163 mg g-1) increase in C. reinhardtii under low nitrogen concentration. Also, higher lipids content was produced under low sulfur concentration (246 mg g-1). It was observed that sulfur variation could affect in a negative way proteins production in C. reinhardtii culture. In the case of C. vulgaris, a higher biomass production was obtained in the standard culture medium (1.37 g L-1), and under a low-phosphorus condition, C. vulgaris produced a higher lipids concentration (248 mg g-1). It was observed that a low concentration of nitrogen had a better effect on the accumulation of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) (C16-C18) in both microalgae. These results lead us to visualize the effects that the variation in macronutrients can have on the growth of microalgae and their possible utility for the production of microalgae-based subproducts.

Abstract
Amongst the many treatments available for the removal of emerging contaminants in wastewater, microalgal cultures have been shown to be effective. However, the effectiveness of exposure of a native microalgal consortium to emerging contaminants such as bisphenol-A (BPA) and triclosan (TCS) to determine the half-maximum effective concentrations (EC50) has not yet been determined. The effect on growth and nutrient removal of such a treatment as well as on the production of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins are, at present, unknown. In this study, the EC50 of BPA and TCS (96-hour experiments) was determined using a consortium of native microalgae (Scenedesmus obliquus and Desmodesmus sp.) to define the maximum tolerance to these contaminants. The effect of BPA and TCS in synthetic wastewater (SWW) was investigated in terms of microalgal growth, chlorophyll a (Chl-a), carbohydrate, lipid, and protein content, as well as nutrient removal. Assays were performed in heterotrophic conditions (12/12 light/dark cycles). EC50-96 h values of 17 mg/L and 325 µg/L for BPA and TCS, respectively, were found at 72 h. For an initial microalgal inoculum of ≈ 300 mg TSS/L (total suspended solids per litre), growth increased by 16.1% when exposed to BPA and 17.78% for TCS. At ≈ 500 mg TSS/L, growth increased by 8.25% with BPA and 9.92% with TCS, respectively. At the EC50-96 h concentrations determined in the study, BPA and TCS did not limit the growth of microalgae in wastewater. Moreover, they were found to stimulate the content of Chl-a, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and enhance nutrient removal. Abstract
Dietary proteins derived from animal sources, although containing well-balanced profiles of essential amino acids, have considerable environmental and adverse health effects associated with the intake of some animal protein-based products. Consuming foods based on animal proteins carries a higher risk of developing non-communicable diseases such as cancer, heart disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Moreover, dietary protein consumption is increasing due to population growth, posing a supply challenge. There is, therefore, growing interest in discovering novel alternative protein sources. In this context, microalgae have been recognized as strategic crops that can provide a sustainable source of protein. Compared to conventional high-protein crops, using microalgal biomass for protein production presents several advantages in food and feed in terms of productivity, sustainability, and nutritional value. Moreover, microalgae positively impact the environment by not exploiting land or causing water pollution. Many studies have revealed the potential of microalgae as an alternative protein source with the added value of positive effects on human health due to their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties. The main emphasis of this review is on the potential health-promoting applications of microalgae-based proteins, peptides, and bioactive substances for IBD and NAFLD.

Abstract
Flocculation combined with dissolved air flotation (DAF) is a promising technology for harvesting microalgae; therefore, optimisation of flocculant-DAF operating conditions are frequently explored in laboratory experiments. DAF systems have jars of differing volumes, height to diameter ratios, shapes and materials used to manufacture the jars; thus, the harvesting efficiency (η) may differ between these jars. The aim was to systematically compare η between different types of benchtop DAF jars. Evaluation of 30 different types of DAF jars revealed that η was not influenced by the volume of the jars, but was impacted by the height to diameter ratio, with optimal η at a ratio ranging between 1.6 and 2.05. There was no difference in η between cylindrical and cuboid jars, but jars made of hydrophobic (polypropylene) plastic resulted in a lower η. Overall, these results are useful to guide the design of lab-scale DAF microalgae harvesting experiments.

Abstract
Microalgae have great potential as a future source to meet the increasing global demand for foods. Several microalgae are permitted as safety sources in different countries and regions, and processed as commercial products. However, edible safety, economic feasibility, and acceptable taste are the main challenges for microalgal application in the food industry. Overcome such challenges by developing technology accelerates transition of microalgae into sustainable and nutritious diets. In this review, edible safety of Spirulina, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Chlorella, Haematococcus pluvialis, Dunaliella salina, Schizochytrium and Nannochloropsis is introduced, and health benefits of microalgae-derived carotenoids, amino acids, and fatty acids are discussed. Technologies of adaptive laboratory evolution, kinetic model, bioreactor design and genetic engineering are proposed to improve the organoleptic traits and economic feasibility of microalgae. Then, current technologies of decoloration and de-fishy are summarized to provide options for processing. Novel technologies of extrusion cooking, delivery systems, and 3D bioprinting are suggested to improve food quality. The production costs, biomass values, and markets of microalgal products are analyzed to reveal the economic feasibility of microalgal production. Finally, challenges and future perspectives are proposed. Social acceptance is the major limitation of microalgae-derived foods, and further efforts are required toward the improvement of processing technology.

Abstract
Algae play a crucial role in the earth’s primary productivity by producing not only oxygen but also a variety of high-value nutrients. One such nutrient is polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which are accumulated in many algae and can be consumed by animals through the food chain and eventually by humans. Omega-3 and omega-6 PUFAs are essential nutrients for human and animal health. However, compared with plants and aquatic sourced PUFA, the production of PUFA-rich oil from microalgae is still in the early stages of exploration. This study has collected recent reports on algae-based PUFA production and analyzed related research hotspots and directions, including algae cultivation, lipids extraction, lipids purification, and PUFA enrichment processes. The entire technological process for the extraction, purification and enrichment of PUFA oils from algae is systemically summarized in this review, providing important guidance and technical reference for scientific research and industrialization of algae-based PUFA production.

Abstract
The increasing size of the human population and the shortage of highly valuable proteinaceous ingredients has prompted the international community to scout for new, sustainable, and natural protein resources from invertebrates (e.g., insects) and underutilized legume crops, unexploited terrestrial and aquatic weeds, and fungi. Insect proteins are known for their nutritional value, being rich in proteins with a good balance of essential amino acids and being a valuable source of essential fatty acids and trace elements. Unconventional legume crops were found rich in nutritional, phytochemical, and therapeutic properties, showing excellent abilities to survive extreme environmental conditions. This review evaluates the recent state of underutilized legume crops, aquatic weeds, fungi, and insects intended as alternative protein sources, from ingredient production to their incorporation in food products, including their food formulations and the functional characteristics of alternative plant-based proteins and edible insect proteins as novel foods. Emphasis is also placed on safety issues due to the presence of anti-nutritional factors and allergenic proteins in insects and/or underutilized legumes. The functional and biological activities of protein hydrolysates from different protein sources are reviewed, along with bioactive peptides displaying antihypertensive, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and/or antimicrobial activity. Due to the healthy properties of these foods for the high abundance of bioactive peptides and phytochemicals, more consumers are expected to turn to vegetarianism or veganism in the future, and the increasing demand for such products will be a challenge for the future.

Abstract
Green leaf biomass is one of the largest underutilized sources of nutrients worldwide. Whether it is purposely cultivated (forage crops, duckweed) or upcycled as a waste stream from the mass-produced agricultural crops (discarded leaves, offcuts, tops, peels, or pulp), the green biomass can be established as a viable alternative source of plant proteins in food and feed processing formulations. Rubisco is a major component of all green leaves, comprising up to 50% of soluble leaf protein, and offers many advantageous functional features in terms of essential amino acid profile, reduced allergenicity, enhanced gelation, foaming, emulsification, and textural properties. Nutrient profiles of green leaf biomass differ considerably from those of plant seeds in protein quality, vitamin and mineral concentration, and omega 6/3 fatty acid profiles. Emerging technological improvements in processing fractions, protein quality, and organoleptic profiles will enhance the nutritional quality of green leaf proteins as well as address scaling and sustainability challenges associated with the growing global demand for high quality nutrition.

Abstract
An adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) strategy was designed to evolve autotrophic Nitzschia closterium to mixotrophic growth for high productivity of essential amino acid (EAA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and fucoxanthin. The N. closterium growth was limited under glucose initially, but a red light emitting diode was innovatively applied to modify carbon metabolism and obtain mixotrophic strain of N. closterium GM. The N. closterium GM biomass concentration was improved by 65.07% comparing with wild type, but exhibited weak photosynthesis and strong glucose metabolism. At carbon metabolism levels, ALE promoted NADPH oxidase activity and induced protein degradation to lipid biosynthesis by elevating acetyl-CoA and pyruvate contents. It also improved carbon flux to TCA cycle, and elevated contents of glucose-6-phosphate, fructose-6-phosphate, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate for providing sufficient ATP and NADPH. Productivities of EPA, EAA and fucoxanthin were increased by 41.0%, 18.8% and 20.4%, respectively. This ALE strategy was promising in microalgal production of high-value products.
