Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between dental attendance with periodontal care and the risk of dialysis initiation in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). METHODS This retrospective cohort study used data from the Japan Medical Data Center (JMDC) claims database (January 2015 to August 2022). Patients with T2D, aged 40-74, were included. Dental attendance with periodontal care and initiation of dialysis were used as the exposure and outcome variables, respectively. We fitted the Cox proportional hazards model, including potential confounders, to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs). RESULTS Among 99,273 participants (mean age = 54.4 years [SD = 7.8], male = 71.9%), the incidence rate of dialysis initiation was 0.92 per 1000 person-years. After adjusting for all covariates, those with periodontal care (HR = 0.68 [95%CI = 0.51-0.91] for ≥ 1 time/year and HR = 0.56 [95%CI = 0.41-0.77] for ≥ 1 time/6 months) had a significantly lower risk of dialysis initiation compared to those without dental attendance. CONCLUSION Periodontal disease care in patients with T2D is associated with a reduced risk of dialysis initiation by 32%-44%. This suggests that integrating periodontal care into diabetes management may help prevent the progression of diabetic nephropathy and improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a prevalent inflammatory disease that leads to significant periodontal tissue destruction and compromised dental health, with its severity exacerbated in individuals with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). This review explores the complex relationship between mitochondrial dysfunction and periodontitis in diabetic patients. Recent studies indicate that the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), primarily generated by dysfunctional mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) complexes, contributes to oxidative stress (OS) and subsequent periodontal tissue damage. The interplay between impaired mitochondrial biogenesis, apoptosis of periodontal cells, and ROS accumulation highlights a critical area of concern in understanding the pathophysiology of diabetic periodontitis. Furthermore, altered glycemic control due to inflammatory processes associated with periodontitis may perpetuate a cyclical detriment to oral and systemic health. This review aims to highlight the mechanistic roles of mitochondrial dysfunction in the aggravation of periodontitis among diabetic patients, emphasizing further research to identify potential therapeutic targets and improve treatment efficacy for this dual pathology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of screening at-risk adult dental patients for abnormal blood glucose levels by means of using a chairside finger-stick test that measures glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. METHODS A total of 260 high-risk adult patients, as classified by the American Diabetes Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Prediabetes Risk Test, with no history of diabetes received a chairside HbA1c finger-stick test. Descriptive statistics and χ2 and Fisher exact tests were used to examine associations of HbA1c levels with risk scores and study participants' characteristics. RESULTS Results of chairside testing indicated that 34.2% had undiagnosed prediabetes and 6.6% had undiagnosed diabetes. Results of the postprocedure questionnaire showed high levels of acceptance and satisfaction with the testing. At 6 months after testing, 64.6% of patients with dysglycemia had consulted their primary care provider for follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Dental care professionals are in a unique position to collaborate with physicians and other health care providers in the identification of undiagnosed prediabetes and diabetes. Targeted chairside diabetes testing in the oral health care setting for high-risk patients is a viable public health primary preventive measure. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Screening is pivotal for the early detection, prevention, and management of diabetes, and the dental care setting, where chairside testing is a viable strategy, may be an important venue in confronting the diabetes epidemic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus, a chronic metabolic disorder affecting millions worldwide, is associated with microvascular complications, including diabetic retinopathy (DR) and periodontitis. Understanding their interrelationship is crucial for comprehensive patient care. OBJECTIVE This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to investigate the association between DR and periodontitis in patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. METHODOLOGY Using the PECO framework, we searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases (Inception to April 2023) for studies on the association between DR and periodontitis. Ten studies (n = 1828 participants), including observational and cross-sectional studies, met the inclusion criteria. We conducted qualitative synthesis, risk of bias analysis using the ROBINS-E tool, Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations assessment (GRADE), and random-effects meta-analysis. RESULTS Eight studies found a significant association between severe periodontitis (pocket depth ≥5 mm) and DR, while two found no association. Meta-analysis of 843 participants showed diabetics with periodontitis had 4.48 times higher odds (95% confidence interval: 1.67-12.07, P = .003) of developing retinopathy compared to diabetics without periodontitis. High heterogeneity was observed (I2 = 86%). Subgroup analysis by diabetes type showed no significant difference. The overall GRADE level of evidence was very low. CONCLUSION While most included studies suggest an association between severe periodontitis and increased DR risk, the overall certainty of evidence is low. These findings highlight the potential importance of periodontal health in diabetic patients. High-quality longitudinal studies with adequate control of confounders are required to determine if periodontitis contributes to the progression of DR or if the conditions are merely coincidentally related.

Abstract
AIM To determine the clinical association between periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus through an umbrella review. MATERIALS AND METHODS A search for publications up to August 2023 was conducted using the following electronic databases: PubMed, Cochrane Database, Scopus, SciELO, Google Scholar, and OpenGrey. We included systematic reviews (SRs) with or without meta-analysis evaluating primary studies that investigated the association between periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus, and there were no time or language restrictions. Literature or narrative reviews, rapid reviews, intervention studies, observational studies, preclinical and basic research, abstracts, comments, case reports, protocols, personal opinions, letters, and posters were excluded. The AMSTAR-2 tool was used to determine the methodological quality of the included studies. RESULTS The preliminary search yielded a total of 577 articles, of which only 17 remained after discarding those that did not meet the selection criteria. Following their analysis, an association between periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus (type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes mellitus) was found. CONCLUSIONS The findings and conclusions of this umbrella review indicate with high confidence that periodontal disease is associated with the onset of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes.

Abstract
Background: This investigation evaluates the utility and benefits of integrating interprofessional education (IPE) into laparoscopic training, aiming to enrich medical education and skill acquisition methodologies. Methods: The study randomly allocated 36 participants of a 2023 laparoscopic training course into experimental and control groups, each comprising 18 individuals. The control group underwent traditional theory and practical training, whereas the experimental group additionally engaged in interdisciplinary instruction with nursing educators and participated in simulated laparoscopic surgery exercises. The effectiveness of this interdisciplinary approach was assessed by comparing laparoscopic theory and simulation performance, Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OSATS) scores in animal-based training, and course satisfaction between the groups. Moreover, the impact on interdisciplinary collaborative competencies was measured through pre- and post-training self-evaluations using the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey (ICCAS) in the experimental group. Results: The experimental group demonstrated superior performance in laparoscopic theory and simulation, as well as higher OSATS scores, compared with the control group. Satisfaction ratings regarding the skills practice mode, effects, and instructional quality were also significantly better in the experimental group (P < .05, P < .01). Furthermore, participants in the experimental group reported significant pre-to-post training enhancements in interprofessional communication, team collaboration, role perception, conflict management, and learning and feedback marked by statistically significant differences (P < .05, P < .01). Conclusion: The introduction of an IPE framework significantly boosts laparoscopic training efficiency and promotes team collaboration awareness. This model effectively bridges gaps between disciplines, illustrating substantial applicative value and expansion potential within medical education and skill training arenas.

Abstract
The two-way link between diabetes mellitus and periodontitis is well-recognised, that there is an increased risk of periodontitis for diabetics and is probably related to inflammatory reactions, although further work is required to confirm this hypothesis.Traditionally, dentists have asked their patients if they are diabetic with a simple yes/no question. As more people become diabetic and often have associated complex health problems, this is insufficient information. Glycated haemoglobin levels have been shown to be important in defining diabetic risks. Dentists should be aware of their significance and ask for these results as a matter of routine. More comprehensive questions are suggested.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown that the red cell distribution width (RDW)/serum albumin ratio (RA) is an integrative and new inflammatory marker. RA is associated with clinical outcomes in a variety of diseases, but the clinical value of RDW/RA in the assessment of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has not been elucidated. We examined the link between diabetic RA and DKD while controlling for a wide variety of possible confounders. METHODS Retrospective cohort analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES: 2009-2018) database from the Second Affiliated Hospital and Yuying Children's Hospital and the Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) database was conducted. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association between RA and DKD. RESULTS Overall, 4513 diabetic patients from the NHANES database (n = 2839) and the WMU (n = 1412) were included in this study; 974 patients were diagnosed with DKD in NHANES and 462 in WMU. In the NHANES cohort, diabetes mellitus (DM) patients with higher RA level had a higher risk of DKD (odds ratio = 1.461, 95% confidence interval: 1.250-1.707, p < 0.00001). After adjusting for confounders and propensity score-matched (PSM) analysis, both shown RA levels were independently linked to DKD (pAdjust = 0.00994, pPSM = 0.02889). Similar results were also observed in the WMU cohort (p < 0.00001). CONCLUSIONS The study observes that the RA was an independent predictor of DKD in DM patients. The RA, a biomarker that is cost-effective and easy-to-access, may have potential for risk stratification of DKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interprofessional education is vital in oral healthcare education and should be integrated into both theoretical and work-based education. Little research addresses interprofessional education in dental hands-on training in authentic oral healthcare settings. The aim of the study was to examine the readiness and attitudes of dental and oral hygiene students towards interprofessional education during joint paediatric outreach training. METHODS In the spring of 2022, a cross-sectional study was done involving dental and oral hygiene students using the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) during joint paediatric outreach training. The 19-item tool was answered on a five-point Likert scale (1 = strongly disagree, 2 = disagree, 3 = neutral, 4 = agree, and 5 = strongly agree). Means, standard deviations, minimums, maximums, and medians were calculated for each subscale and overall score. Students grouped according to their categorical variables were compared for statistically significant differences. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used for groups of two and the Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis for groups of three or more. The internal consistency of the scale was measured with Cronbach's alpha. Statistical level was set at 0.05. RESULTS The survey included 111 participants, consisting of 51 oral hygiene students and 60 dental students, with a response rate of 93%. The questionnaire yielded a high overall mean score of 4.2. Both oral hygiene (4.3) and dental students (4.2) displayed strong readiness for interprofessional education measured by the RIPLS. The subscale of teamwork and collaboration achieved the highest score of 4.5. Students lacking prior healthcare education or work experience obtained higher RIPLS scores. Oral hygiene students rated overall items (p = 0.019) and the subscales of positive professional identity (p = < 0.001) and roles and responsibilities (p = 0.038) higher than dental students. The Cronbach's alpha represented high internal consistency for overall RIPLS scores on the scale (0.812). CONCLUSIONS Both oral hygiene and dental students perceived shared learning as beneficial and showcased high readiness for interprofessional education, as evident in their RIPLS scores. Integrating interprofessional learning into oral hygiene and dental curricula is important. Studying together can form a good basis for future working life collaboration.

Abstract
First recorded in 1928, people living with diabetes mellitus (DM) are at a three to four times higher risk of developing periodontal disease (PD) than non-diabetics; for those who smoke this risk increases up to ten times. However, many doctors are unaware of this.DM and PD are bidirectionally linked, the one affecting the other and vice versa, although the mechanism is not fully understood and may be linked to chronic infection. PD has an adverse effect on glycaemic control. That improves when periodontitis is successfully treated.Doctors should consider PD when their patients have persistently high glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, and dentists should consider diabetes or pre-diabetes when they have patients with unstable or progressive periodontitis.Doctors, dentists, and their teams need to share results. A traffic light system of red, amber and green for both medical and dental risks is proposed, and a pro forma designed, so that diabetics themselves can share them with their professional advisors until such times as there are reliable methods of interprofessional communication and a paradigm shift in working practices is achieved.Dentists need to find ways to teach their medical colleagues about the basics of PD, update their medical records, and understand more about medical risks. More research is required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Prevention complements the curative management of oral diseases. Effective preventive interventions involve the adoption of oral health promoting behaviours. Little is known about the awareness of oral disease and its prevention among Singaporean adults as well as their prevailing oral health attitudes and behaviours. The aim of the study was to describe the oral health knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of adults in Singapore. METHODS A random sample of adults (≥21 years old) in Singapore was selected to complete an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire gathered information about their knowledge of the aetiology, signs and symptoms as well as prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease; attitudes about the value of teeth, locus of control in maintaining oral health and oral health behaviours including toothbrushing, flossing and dental attendance. RESULTS A total of 1196 adults of weighted mean age 48 years old with almost equal proportions of males and females responded to the questionnaire. Participants were more unaware about the causes of periodontal disease (25.7%) than dental caries (4%). While more than 90% of participants felt that healthy teeth were important and could affect their overall health, many (67.0%) felt it was natural to lose their teeth with old age. Among the participants, 83.5% brushed their teeth twice a day; 41.9% flossed their teeth and 53.9% visited the dentist at least once a year. CONCLUSIONS The study findings showed good knowledge around dental caries but some gaps around periodontal disease. It also found that participants perceived having limited control over preventing tooth loss. Irregular dental attendance and poor denture wearing habits were also noted. The findings shed light on key areas to focus on through oral health promotion to improve overall oral health.

Abstract
The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM), a major chronic disease and a leading cause of death and disability around the world, is rising. According to the latest data, the global prevalence of DM has increased to 463 million (9.3% of adults) in 2019 and is estimated to reach 700 million by 2045. Periodontal disease, result of periodontium inflammation, is a common, chronic disease and has long been considered one of the complications of DM. Moreover, literature reflects a spectrum of conflicting viewpoints on the effect of diabetic conditions on the implant treatment strategies. The current review aims to update the recent epidemiologic evidence regarding the relationship between DM and periodontal/peri-implant disease, emphasising the effects of glycaemic control on the severity of these diseases and describing the pathobiological mechanisms underlying this association. This review's findings indicate a bidirectional relationship between DM and periodontal/peri-implant disease and that this relationship seems causal, implying that controlling these two diseases might help prevent each other's incidence. Additionally, the severity of periodontal/peri-implant disease is directly related to metabolic control. Although patients with diabetes can obtain implant success similar to those in systemically healthy individuals, an increased risk of peri-implantitis has been reported in DM patients. Therefore, the importance of glycaemic control and maintaining proper oral hygiene cannot be overstated.

Abstract
The Oral Health Nursing Education and Practice Program (OHNEP), a core partner of the National Interprofessional Initiative on Oral Health, is a national initiative focused on implementing an interprofessional oral health workforce innovation to influence change in clinical education, practice, and policy. OHNEP aims to address oral health disparities by enhancing the nursing profession's role in integrating oral health and its links to overall health in both academic and clinical settings. Leveraging the opportunity to cultivate faculty, preceptors, and clinicians as oral health champions, OHNEP aims to integrate interprofessional oral health clinical content and competencies in undergraduate and graduate nursing programs through faculty and preceptor development, curriculum integration, and establishing oral health as a standard of care in clinical settings. Outcomes include widespread dissemination of OHNEP virtual products and resources used by a significant number of undergraduate and graduate programs nationwide. OHNEP has a notable impact on policy related to integrating oral health and its links to overall health in undergraduate and graduate nursing programs, thereby increasing interprofessional oral health workforce capacity and aiming to improve oral health equity.

Abstract
PURPOSE The annual teaching oral-systemic health (TOSH) virtual clinical simulation and case study activity exposes interprofessional teams of nurse practitioner, nurse midwifery, dental, medical, and pharmacy students to a virtual clinical simulation experience that uses oral-systemic health as a clinical exemplar for promoting interprofessional core competencies. The present study examines changes in participating students' self-reported interprofessional competencies following participation in virtual TOSH from 2020 to 2022. These findings are also compared to those from in-person TOSH (2019) to examine the equivalence of student outcomes of both the in-person and virtual programs. METHODS A pre- and post-test evaluation design was used to examine the effectiveness of exposure to the TOSH program on self-reported attainment of interprofessional competencies for participating students using the interprofessional collaborative competency attainment scale. RESULTS Analysis of pre- and post-surveys demonstrated statistically significant improvement in students' self-rated interprofessional experience competencies following the virtual TOSH program, which aligns with results from the in-person cohorts. Similar findings between the in-person and virtual cohorts indicated no statistically significant difference between the two formats. CONCLUSION These findings demonstrate the success of TOSH in promoting attainment of interprofessional competencies among future health professionals. We encourage administrators and faculty who lead health professional programs to take advantage of using virtual simulations as an integral component of interprofessional oral health clinical experiences where students from different health professions learn from and about each other in assessing and treating patients across the lifespan.

Abstract
Diabetes and periodontitis are prevalent diseases that considerably impact global economy and diabetes is a major risk factor of periodontitis. Mitochondrial dynamic alterations are involved in many diseases including diabetes and this study aims to evaluate their relevance with diabetes aggravated periodontitis. Sixty mice are randomly divided into 4 groups: control, periodontitis, diabetes and diabetic periodontitis. Periodontitis severity is evaluated by alveolar bone loss, inflammation and oxidative stress status. Mitochondrial structural and functional defects are evaluated by the mitochondrial fission/fusion events, mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, complex activities and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. Advanced glycation end product (AGE) and Porphyromonas gingivalis are closely related to periodontitis occurrence and development. Human gingival fibroblast cells (HGF-1) are used to investigate the AGE role and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Porphyromonas gingivalis (P-LPS) in aggravating diabetic periodontitis by mitochondrial dynamic and function alterations. In vivo, diabetic mice with periodontitis show severe bone loss, increased inflammation and oxidative stress accumulation. Among mice with periodontitis, diabetic mice show worse mitochondrial dynamic perturbations than lean mice, along with fusion protein levels inducing more mitochondrial fission in gingival tissue. In vitro, AGEs and P-LPS co-treatment causes severe.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the association between self-reported oral health and incident micro and macrovascular diabetes complications. METHODS This prospective cohort study linked data from the 45 and Up Study, Australia, to administrative health records. The participants were 24,862 men and women, aged ≥45 years, with diabetes at baseline (2006-2009). The oral health of participants was assessed by questionnaire. Incident diabetes complications were determined using hospitalisation data and claims for medical services up until 2019. Hazard ratios for the association between oral health and incident complications were calculated using multivariable cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS Almost 60 % of participants had <20 teeth, and 38 % rated their teeth and gums as fair or poor. Compared with those with ≥20 teeth, those with 0 teeth had an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (aHR 1.24, 95 % CI: 1.15, 1.35), lower limb (aHR 1.22, 95 % CI: 1.11, 1.33) and kidney (aHR 1.19, 95 % CI: 1.11, 1.29) complications. Individuals with 1-9 teeth had an increased risk of eye complications (aHR 1.14, 95 % CI: 1.07, 1.22). The associations were generally consistent for poor self-rated teeth and gums. CONCLUSIONS Self-reported oral health measures may be a marker of elevated risk of complications in people with diabetes.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a main risk factor for periodontitis, but until now, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Diabetes can increase the pathogenicity of the periodontal microbiota and the inflammatory/host immune response of the periodontium. Hyperglycemia induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and enhances oxidative stress (OS), exacerbating periodontal tissue destruction. Furthermore, the alveolar bone resorption damage and the epigenetic changes in periodontal tissue induced by diabetes may also contribute to periodontitis. We will review the latest clinical data on the evidence of diabetes promoting the susceptibility of periodontitis from epidemiological, molecular mechanistic, and potential therapeutic targets and discuss the possible molecular mechanistic targets, focusing in particular on novel data on inflammatory/host immune response and OS. Understanding the intertwined pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus and periodontitis can explain the cross-interference between endocrine metabolic and inflammatory diseases better, provide a theoretical basis for new systemic holistic treatment, and promote interprofessional collaboration between endocrine physicians and dentists.

Abstract
Objetivo: realizar a tradução, adaptação cultural e validação do instrumento “Instrumento de Autoavaliação em Diabetes” para aplicação no contexto brasileiro. Métodos: estudo metodológico realizado com 132 profissionais, entre os anos de 2016 e 2018, em seis etapas: 1- Tradução inicial; 2- Síntese da tradução; 3- Retrotradução (back-translation); 4- Avaliação pelo comitê de juízes; 5- Adequação cultural (pré-teste); 6- Reprodutibilidade. Houve participação de profissionais de equipes multiprofissionais envolvidas no tratamento do diabetes, por meio da plataforma e-surv. Resultados: entre os participantes, predominaram o sexo feminino (73,5%), profissionais com especialização (pós-graduação Lato Sensu) (51,5%) e com experiência na assistência a pessoas com diabetes (84,4%). O Índice de Validade de Conteúdo (IVC) foi satisfatório (média de 0,850). O instrumento apresentou boa consistência interna (Alfa de Cronbach=0,878). A análise de confiabilidade do instrumento, realizada pelo cálculo do coeficiente de correlação intraclasse (CCI), indicou concordância adequada em todas as medidas, 0,878 (IC 95%: 0,864 – 0,891), com Kappa Ponderado médio de 0,714 e índices acima de 0,60 em 85% os itens, mostrando boa concordância teste e reteste. Conclusão: a versão traduzida e adaptada culturalmente do Instrumento de Autoavaliação em Diabetes apresentou boa confiabilidade, aceitabilidade e estabilidade temporal satisfatórias conforme os parâmetros internacionais, podendo ser utilizada para autoavaliação em diabetes pelos profissionais da saúde.

Abstract
This paper reviews why doctors rarely refer their diabetic patients for a dental opinion and suggests strategies to teach them the importance of controlling periodontal disease as part of a system of joint care. A pro forma to share results and define diabetic risks for doctors, dentists and patients has been developed. Periodontal risks could be better defined if the community periodontal index of treatment needs score of 2 for calculus is divided into 2 for supra-gingival and 2* for sub-gingival types.

Abstract
Different terms (e.g., interprofessional, multiprofessional, interdisciplinary) are used in interprofessional education and collaboration without sufficient differentiation or precision in regard to meaning. In recent years academic publications in English and German have contributed to clarifying this issue. However, there are no definitions internationally or in the German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) specifically referring to the people engaged in teaching interprofessional education. Teaching in interprofessional education has evolved from the traditional role of expert to one of mentor or facilitator. It is also evident that those who teach play a central role in the success of interprofessional courses. While many different designations are used to refer to interprofessional teachers in the relevant literature and in the language of daily use, a uniform and adequate terminology should be used to refer to such teaching staff. Based on literature reviews, this commentary seeks to propose terms for teaching staff active in the area of interprofessional education and thus provide a basis for discussion in the German-speaking countries. Taking the results of the literature analysis and the roles of teachers in interprofessional settings into consideration, we propose that the English term "IP facilitator" (IP for interprofessional) should also be used in the German-speaking world and "facilitateur IP" in the French-speaking world. A French translation is included in attachment 1 to enable broader discussion in Switzerland.

Abstract
In the wake of local initiatives and developmental funding programs, interprofessionality is now included in national curricula in the German-speaking countries. Based on the 3P model (presage, process, product), this position paper presents the development of interprofessional education in recent years in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and places it in an international context. Core aspects as legal frameworks, including amendments to occupational regulations as well as the formation of networks and faculty development are basic requirements for interprofessional education. New topics and educational settings take shape in the process of interprofessional education: patient perspectives and teaching formats, such as online courses, become more important or are newly established. The influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on interprofessional education is explored as well. Among many new interprofessional courses, particularly the implementation of interprofessional training wards in Germany and Switzerland are positive examples of successful interprofessional education. The objective of interprofessional education continues to be the acquisition of interprofessional competencies. The main focus is now centered on evaluating this educational format and testing for the corresponding competencies. In the future, more capacities will be required for interprofessional continuing education and post-graduate education. Structured research programs are essential to ascertain the effects of interprofessional education in the German-speaking countries. In this position paper the GMA committee on interprofessional education encourages further advancement of this topic and expresses the aim to continue cooperating with other networks to strengthen and intensify interprofessional education and collaboration in healthcare.

Abstract
Conducted studies indicate the relationship between oral health and systemic diseases. Moreover, the latest research indicated that cariogenic bacteria may severely influence the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection and increase risk of COVID-19 complications. This article aims to review various applications of propolis and pay attention to a healthy diet rich in polyphenols, which may allow the reduction of dental plaque accumulation. A literature review has been conducted from June until November 2021. It showed that propolis could be a useful agent in decreasing the accumulation of dental plaque. Moreover, a diet rich in polyphenols prevents cariogenic bacteria and reduces the accumulation of dental plaque. A reduction of a dental plaque may influence the risk of a severe course of COVID-19. Therefore, propolis and a diet rich in polyphenols may play an important role in prophylaxis of systemic diseases. Recently, it has been proven that oral infection may affect cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system, respiratory system, nervous system, as well as may be a risk factor for diabetes mellitus. These aspects should stimulate clinicians to further research about polyphenols.

Oral cavity is found among all the organs and systems affected in the course of DM. Important pathologies are developed with higher prevalence, such as periodontitis (PD), alterations in salivary flow, fungal infections, oral cancer, and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD). It has been proven that PD hinders the metabolic control of DM and that the presence of PD increases the possibility for developing diabetes. Despite the relevance of these oral pathologies, the knowledge of primary care physicians and diabetes specialists about the importance of oral health in diabetics, as well as the knowledge of dentists about the importance of DM for oral health of patients is scarce or non-existent. It is accepted that the correct management of diabetic patients requires interdisciplinary teams, including dentists. In this critical review, the existing knowledge and evidence-degree on the preventive, clinical, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic aspects of oral diseases that occur with a significant frequency in the diabetic population are developed in extension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The siloed delivery of oral and medical health care in the United States has contributed to a lack of awareness of the consequences of poor oral health and has hampered effective interprofessional education and collaboration. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and practice behaviors of primary care medical providers in an urban safety-net hospital regarding collaboration with dentists and integration of oral health into overall health-care delivery. METHODS A 36-item survey was designed in a web-based platform (Survey Monkey®) and electronically distributed in September 2020 to 181 primary care medical providers (physicians, nurses, physician assistants) within a municipal hospital in the Bronx, New York. The questionnaire included sections on demographics, current practices, oral health knowledge, and opinions regarding interprofessional collaboration. Descriptive statistics and bivariate analyses using the chi-square and Fisher's exact test were performed with a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS The response rate was 66% (119 respondents). The vast majority (80%) reported little or no training in oral health and 85% reported no team experience with oral health professionals. Medical providers' confidence in examining the oral cavity was positively associated with previous additional training (p = 0.001) and with team experience (p = 0.005). The two most commonly reported barriers to willingness to collaborate were lack of formal relationships with dental providers (74%) and competing priorities (69%). CONCLUSION Overall, there is very limited awareness and integration of oral health into the clinical practice of medical providers at this safety-net hospital. However, those providers with previous training and team experience had greater oral health confidence. Given the critical importance of oral health to overall health, increased efforts should be directed to further educate and train medical providers and address barriers to interprofessional care.

Abstract
The past decade has seen marked increases in research findings identifying oral-systemic links. Yet, much of dental research remains poorly integrated with mainstream biomedical research. The historic separation of dentistry from medicine has led to siloed approaches in education, research and practice, ultimately depriving patients, providers, and policy makers of findings that could benefit overall health and well-being. These omissions amount to lost opportunities for risk assessment, diagnosis, early intervention and prevention of disease, increasing cost and contributing to a fragmented and inefficient healthcare delivery system. This perspective provides examples where fostering interprofessional research collaborations has advanced scientific understanding and yielded clinical benefits. In contrast are examples where failure to include dental research findings has limited progress and led to adverse health outcomes. The impetus to overcome the dental-medical research divide gains further urgency today in light of the coronavirus pandemic where contributions that dental research can make to understanding the pathophysiology of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and in diagnosing and preventing infection are described. Eliminating the research divide will require collaborative and trans-disciplinary research to ensure incorporation of dental research findings in broad areas of biomedical research. Enhanced communication, including interoperable dental/medical electronic health records and educational efforts will be needed so that the public, health care providers, researchers, professional schools, organizations, and policymakers can fully utilize oral health scientific information to meet the overall health needs of the public.
