Buffer Chain Model for Understanding Crystallization Competition in Conjugated Polymers

It remains challenging to comprehensively understand the packing models of conjugated polymers, in which side chains play extremely critical roles. The side chains are typically flexible and non-conductive and are widely used to improve the polymer solubility in organic solutions. Herein, a buffer chain model is proposed to describe link between conjugated backbone and side chains for understanding the relationship of crystallization competition of conductive conjugated backbones and non-conductive side chains. A longer buffer chain is beneficial for alleviating such crystallization competition and further promoting the spontaneous packing of conjugated backbones, resulting in enhanced charge transport properties. Our results provide a novel concept for designing conjugated polymers towards ordered organization and enhanced electronic properties and highlight the importance of balancing the competitive interactions between different parts of conjugated polymers.

Selective Induction of Molecular Assembly to Tissue-Level Anisotropy on Peptide-Based Optoelectronic Cardiac Biointerfaces

The conduction efficiency of ions in excitable tissues and of charged species in organic conjugated materials both benefit from having ordered domains and anisotropic pathways. In this study, a photocurrent-generating cardiac biointerface is presented, particularly for investigating the sensitivity of cardiomyocytes to geometrically comply to biomacromolecular cues differentially assembled on a conductive nanogrooved substrate. Through a polymeric surface-templated approach, photoconductive substrates with symmetric peptide-quaterthiophene (4T)-peptide units assembled as 1D nanostructures on nanoimprinted polyalkylthiophene (P3HT) surface are developed. The 4T-based peptides studied here can form 1D nanostructures on prepatterned polyalkylthiophene substrates, as directed by hydrogen bonding, aromatic interactions between 4T and P3HT, and physical confinement on the nanogrooves. It is observed that smaller 4T-peptide units that can achieve a higher degree of assembly order within the polymeric templates serve as a more efficient driver of cardiac cytoskeletal anisotropy than merely presenting aligned -RGD bioadhesive epitopes on a nanotopographic surface. These results unravel some insights on how cardiomyocytes perceive submicrometer dimensionality, local molecular order, and characteristics of surface cues in their immediate environment. Overall, the work offers a cardiac patterning platform that presents the possibility of a gene modification-free cardiac photostimulation approach while controlling the conduction directionality of the biotic and abiotic components.

Heavy-to-light electron transition enabling real-time spectra detection of charged particles by a biocompatible semiconductor

The current challenge of wearable/implantable personal dosimeters for medical diagnosis and radiotherapy applications is lack of suitable detector materials possessing both excellent detection performance and biocompatibility. Here, we report a solution-grown biocompatible organic single crystalline semiconductor (OSCS), 4-Hydroxyphenylacetic acid (4HPA), achieving real-time spectral detection of charged particles with single-particle sensitivity. Along in-plane direction, two-dimensional anisotropic 4HPA exhibits a large electron drift velocity of 5 × 105 cm s-1 at "radiation-mode" while maintaining a high resistivity of (1.28 ± 0.003) × 1012 Ω·cm at "dark-mode" due to influence of dense π-π overlaps and high-energy L1 level. Therefore, 4HPA detectors exhibit the record spectra detection of charged particles among their organic counterparts, with energy resolution of 36%, (μt)e of (4.91 ± 0.07) × 10-5 cm2 V-1, and detection time down to 3 ms. These detectors also show high X-ray detection sensitivity of 16,612 μC Gyabs-1 cm-3, detection of limit of 20 nGyair s-1, and long-term stability after 690 Gyair irradiation.

Biomimetic Sequence-Templating Approach toward a Multiscale Modulation of Chromogenic Polymer Properties

Precision control via molecular structure over adaptive conjugated polymer properties in aqueous environments is critical for realizing their biomedical applications. Here, we unravel the dependence of amphiphilic peptide-polydiacetylene (PDA) conjugate properties on the characteristic steric and hydrophobic contributions within peptide segments that serve as a biomimetic template for diacetylene polymerization in water. We investigated the functional impacts of molecular volume and polarity changes brought by dipeptide substitution domains on the following peptide-PDA material properties at multiple length scales: supramolecular assembly behavior, chain conformation-dependent photophysical properties, cell-material interfacing, and for the first time, bulk electrical properties of their films processed in water. A library of peptide-PDAs with systematically varied sequences show that the contributions of steric effects predominantly influence the electronic structure and resulting trends in photophysical properties, while the interplay between size and hydrophobicity of individual residues becomes more significant for higher-order assemblies affecting bulk properties. This work demonstrates sequence-tunable molecular volume and polarity as synthetic handles to rationally modulate PDA material properties across length scales, providing insights into the programmability of biomimetic conjugated polymers with adaptive functionalities.

Visualizing the multi-level assembly structures of conjugated molecular systems with chain-length dependent behavior

It remains challenging to understand the structural evolution of conjugated polymers from single chains to solvated aggregates and film microstructures, although it underpins the performance of optoelectrical devices fabricated via the mainstream solution processing method. With several ensemble visual measurements, here we unravel the morphological evolution process of a model system of isoindigo-based conjugated molecules, including the hidden molecular assembly pathways, the mesoscale network formation, and their unorthodox chain dependence. Short chains show rigid chain conformations forming discrete aggregates in solution, which further grow to form a highly ordered film that exhibits poor electrical performance. In contrast, long chains exhibit flexible chain conformations, creating interlinked aggregates networks in solution, which are directly imprinted into films, forming interconnective solid-state microstructure with excellent electrical performance. Visualizing multi-level assembly structures of conjugated molecules provides a deep understanding of the inheritance of assemblies from solution to solid-state, accelerating the optimization of device fabrication.

Engineering Multi-Scale Organization for Biotic and Organic Abiotic Electroactive Systems

Multi-scale organization of molecular and living components is one of the most critical parameters that regulate charge transport in electroactive systems-whether abiotic, biotic, or hybrid interfaces. In this article, an overview of the current state-of-the-art for controlling molecular order, nanoscale assembly, microstructure domains, and macroscale architectures of electroactive organic interfaces used for biomedical applications is provided. Discussed herein are the leading strategies and challenges to date for engineering the multi-scale organization of electroactive organic materials, including biomolecule-based materials, synthetic conjugated molecules, polymers, and their biohybrid analogs. Importantly, this review provides a unique discussion on how the dependence of conduction phenomena on structural organization is observed for electroactive organic materials, as well as for their living counterparts in electrogenic tissues and biotic-abiotic interfaces. Expansion of fabrication capabilities that enable higher resolution and throughput for the engineering of ordered, patterned, and architecture electroactive systems will significantly impact the future of bioelectronic technologies for medical devices, bioinspired harvesting platforms, and in vitro models of electroactive tissues. In summary, this article presents how ordering at multiple scales is important for modulating transport in both the electroactive organic, abiotic, and living components of bioelectronic systems.

Modelling the 3D Structure of PEDOT:PSS Supramolecular Assembly in Aqueous Dispersion Based on SAXS with Synchrotron Light

In this work, we study the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) structure in aqueous dispersion with small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). In-depth structure analysis is achieved based on a set of complementary and sophisticated algorithms, which provide not only shape and packing of chains but also 3D structure of the colloids. The structure information of the PEDOT chain was extracted from the well-known Guinier, Porod and pair distance distribution function (PDDF) analysis of the SAXS data, while the 3D modelling was achieved with the DAMMIF and DAMAVER programs in ATSAS software package. To the best of our knowledge, we first establish the 3D model of the PEDOT:PSS colloids’ structure that will help people to understand the supramolecular assembly in aqueous dispersion, which sheds light on the solution structure study of polymers that are widely used in daily life.

Nexuses Between the Chemical Design and Performance of Small Molecule Dopant-Free Hole Transporting Materials in Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have grabbed much attention of researchers owing to their quick rise in power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, long-term stability remains a hurdle in commercialization, partly due to the inclusion of necessary hygroscopic dopants in hole transporting materials, enhancing the complexity and total cost. Generally, the efforts in designing dopant-free hole transporting materials (HTMs) are devoted toward small molecule and polymeric HTMs, where small molecule based HTMs (SM-HTMs) are dominant due to their reproducibility, facile synthesis, and low cost. Still, the state-of-art dopant-free SM-HTM has not been achieved yet, mainly because of the knowledge gap between device engineering and molecular designs. From a molecular engineering perspective, this article reviews dopant-free SM-HTMs for PSCs, outlining analyses of chemical structures with promising properties toward achieving effective, low-cost, and scalable materials for devices with higher stability. Finally, an outlook of dopant-free SM-HTMs toward commercial application and insight into the development of long-term stability PSCs devices is provided.

Effects of Flexible Conjugation-Break Spacers of Non-Conjugated Polymer Acceptors on Photovoltaic and Mechanical Properties of All-Polymer Solar Cells

HIGHLIGHTS

A series of non-conjugated acceptor polymers with flexible conjugation-break spacers (FCBSs) of different lengths were synthesized. The effect of FCBSs length on solubility of the acceptor polymers, and their photovoltaic and mechanical properties in all-polymer solar cells were explored. This work provides useful guidelines for the design of semiconducting polymers by introducing FCBS with proper length, which can giantly improved properties that are not possible to be achieved by the state-of-the-art fully conjugated polymers.

ABSTRACT

All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) possess attractive merits including superior thermal stability and mechanical flexibility for large-area roll-to-roll processing. Introducing flexible conjugation-break spacers (FCBSs) into backbones of polymer donor (P_D) or polymer acceptor (P_A) has been demonstrated as an efficient approach to enhance both the photovoltaic (PV) and mechanical properties of the all-PSCs. However, length dependency of FCBS on certain all-PSC related properties has not been systematically explored. In this regard, we report a series of new non-conjugated P_As by incorporating FCBS with various lengths (2, 4, and 8 carbon atoms in thioalkyl segments). Unlike common studies on so-called side-chain engineering, where longer side chains would lead to better solubility of those resulting polymers, in this work, we observe that the solubilities and the resulting photovoltaic/mechanical properties are optimized by a proper FCBS length (i.e., C2) in P_A named PYTS-C2. Its all-PSC achieves a high efficiency of 11.37%, and excellent mechanical robustness with a crack onset strain of 12.39%, significantly superior to those of the other P_As. These results firstly demonstrate the effects of FCBS lengths on the PV performance and mechanical properties of the all-PSCs, providing an effective strategy to fine-tune the structures of P_As for highly efficient and mechanically robust PSCs. Organic ultrathin nanostructure arrays: materials, methods and applications

Organic ultrathin semiconductor nanostructures have attracted continuous attention in recent years owing to their excellent charge transport capability, favorable flexibility, solution-processability and adjustable photoelectric properties, providing opportunities for next-generation optoelectronic applications. For integrated electronics, organic ultrathin nanostructures need to be prepared as large-area patterns with precise alignment and high crystallinity to achieve organic electronic devices with high performance and high throughput. However, the fabrication of organic ultrathin nanostructure arrays still remains challenging due to uncontrollable growth along the height direction in solution processes. In this review, we first introduce the properties, assembly methods and applications of four typical organic ultrathin nanostructures, including small molecules, polymers, and other organic-inorganic hybrid materials. Five categories of representative solution-processing techniques for patterning organic micro- and nanostructures are summarized and discussed. Finally, challenges and perspectives in the controllable preparation of organic ultrathin arrays and potential applications are featured on the basis of their current development.

Controlling Solution-State Aggregation and Solid-State Microstructures of Conjugated Polymers by Tuning Backbone Conformation

Molecular ordering of conjugated polymers both in solution-state aggregates and in solid-state microstructures is a determining factor of the charge transport properties in optoelectronic devices. However, the effect of backbone conformation in conjugated polymers on assembly structures is still unclear. Herein, to understand such backbone conformation effect, three novel chlorinated benzodifurandionge-based oligo(p-phenylene vinylene) (BDOPV) polymers are systematically developed. These BDOPV-based polymers exhibit significantly twisted backbone conformation (near 90° interunit torsion angle) between conjugated units, which can prevent polymer chains from forming ordered assembly structures by increasing conformational energy penalty in closely packed chains. A higher rotational barrier of the torsion angle would further prevent polymer chains from assembling, finally resulting in non-aggregated chains in solution and highly disordered solid-state packing structures. This work will deepen the understanding of the relationship between polymer backbone conformation and assembly structures, contributing to the exploration of the structure-property relationship of polymers. Regulation of High Miscibility for Efficient Charge-Transport in n-Doped Conjugated Polymers

Strong interchain interactions of conjugated polymers usually result in poor miscibility with molecular dopants, limiting the doping efficiency because of uncontrolled phase separation. We have developed a strategy to achieve efficient charge-transport and high doping miscibility in n-doped conjugated polymers. We solve the miscibility issue through disorder side-chains containing dopants better. Systemic structural characterization reveals a farther side-chain branching point will lead to higher disorders, which provides appropriate sites to accommodate extrinsic molecular dopants without harming original chain packings and charge-transport channels. Therefore, better sustainability of solid-state microstructure is obtained, yielding a stable conductivity even when overloading massive dopants. This work highlights the importance of realizing high host-dopant miscibility in molecular doping of conjugated polymers.

Alignment of organic conjugated molecules for high-performance device applications

High-performance organic semiconductor materials as the electroactive components of optoelectronic devices have attracted much attention and made them ideal candidates for solution-processable, large-area, and low-cost flexible electronics. Especially, organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on conjugated semiconductor materials have experienced stunning progress in device performance. To make these materials economically viable, comprehensive knowledge of charge transport mechanisms is required. The alignment of organic conjugated molecules in the active layer is vital to charge transport properties of devices. The present review highlights the recent progress of processing-structure-transport correlations that allow the precise and uniform alignment of organic conjugated molecules over large areas for multiple electronic applications, including OFETs, organic thermoelectric devices (OTEs), and organic phototransistors (OPTs). Different strategies for regulating crystallinity and macroscopic orientation of conjugated molecules are introduced to correlate the molecular packing, the device performance and charge transport anisotropy in multiple organic electronic devices. Side-Chain Engineering of Conjugated Polymers for High-Performance Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Past decades have witnessed the rapid development of conjugated polymers because of their promising semiconducting properties and applications in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). Recent studies have shown that side-chain engineering of conjugated polymers is an efficient strategy to increase semiconducting performance. This Perspective focuses on the side-chain modulation of conjugated polymers and evaluating their effects on the performance of OFETs. The challenges and potential applications of functional high-performance OFETs through side-chain engineering are also discussed.

Polymer Acceptors with Flexible Spacers Afford Efficient and Mechanically Robust All-Polymer Solar Cells

High efficiency and mechanical robustness are both crucial for the practical applications of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) in stretchable and wearable electronics. In this regard, a series of new polymer acceptors (P_A s) is reported by incorporating a flexible conjugation-break spacer (FCBS) to achieve highly efficient and mechanically robust all-PSCs. Incorporation of FCBS affords the effective modulation of the crystallinity and pre-aggregation of the P_A s, and achieves the optimal blend morphology with polymer donor (P_D ), increasing both the photovoltaic and mechanical properties of all-PSCs. In particular, an all-PSC based on PYTS-0.3 P_A incorporated with 30% FCBS and PBDB-T P_D demonstrates a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.68% and excellent mechanical stretchability with a crack onset strain (COS) of 21.64% and toughness of 3.86 MJ m^-3 , which is significantly superior to those of devices with the P_A without the FCBS (PYTS-0.0, PCE = 13.01%, and toughness = 2.70 MJ m^-3 ). To date, this COS is the highest value reported for PSCs with PCEs of over 8% without any insulating additives. These results reveal that the introduction of FCBS into the conjugated backbone is a highly feasible strategy to simultaneously improve the PCE and stretchability of PSCs.

Unraveling the Molar Mass Dependence of Shearing-Induced Aggregation Structure of a High-Mobility Polymer Semiconductor

Aggregation-structure formation of conjugated polymers is a fundamental problem in the field of organic electronics and remains poorly understood. Herein, the molar mass dependence of the aggregation structure of a high-mobility conjugated copolymer (TDPP-Se) comprising thiophene-flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole and selenophene is thoroughly shown. Five batches of TDPP-Se are prepared with the number-average molecular weights (M_n ) varied greatly from 21 to 135 kg mol^-1 . Small-angle neutron scattering and transmission electron microscopy are combined to probe the solution structure of these polymers, consistently using a deuterated solvent. All the polymers adopt 1D rod-like aggregation structures and the radius of the 1D rods is not sensitive to the M_n , while the length increases monotonically with M_n . By utilizing the ordered packing of the aggregated structure in solution, a highly aligned and ordered film is prepared and, thereafter, a reliable hole mobility of 13.8 cm² V^-1 s^-1 is realized in organic thin-film transistors with the moderate M_n batch via bar coating. The hole mobility is among the highest values reported for diketopyrrolopyrrole-based polymers. This work paves the way to visualize the real aggregated structure of polymer semiconductors in solution and sheds light on the microstructure control of high-performance electronic devices.
