Abstract
While the physical health effects of obesity are well-characterized, an emerging branch of research has shown that obesity additionally plays a critical role in one's mental health. Young adults, in a pivotal transition phase in their lives, may be particularly prone to the concurrent effects of obesity and adverse mental health outcomes. The purpose of this review is to comprehensively examine existing data regarding the connection between obesity and two widely validated measures of mental health: psychological distress and depression. The connection between mental health outcomes and obesity is mediated by a complex interplay between biological and sociocultural factors, which is explored in this review with particular focus on younger adults aged 20-39. Further, the impact of several demographic factors including race/ethnicity, gender, and immigration status are examined closely. To our knowledge, this review is one of the first efforts to integrate existing knowledge between obesity and mental health, with particular regard for young adults and the impact of other key sociodemographic characteristics. This review has important implications at the interface of two of the most pressing public health crises in the United States.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overlapping but divided literatures suggest certain depression facets may pose greater obesity and diabetes risk than others. Our objectives were to integrate the major depressive disorder (MDD) subtype and depressive symptom cluster literatures and to clarify which facets are associated with the greatest cardiometabolic disease risk. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of published studies examining associations of ≥2 MDD subtypes or symptom clusters with obesity or diabetes risk outcomes. We report which facets the literature is "in favor" of (i.e., having the strongest or most consistent results). RESULTS Forty-five articles were included. Of the MDD subtype-obesity risk studies, 14 were in favor of atypical MDD, and 8 showed similar or null associations across subtypes. Of the symptom cluster-obesity risk studies, 5 were in favor of the somatic cluster, 1 was in favor of other clusters, and 5 were similar or null. Of the MDD subtype-diabetes risk studies, 7 were in favor of atypical MDD, 3 were in favor of other subtypes, and 5 were similar or null. Of the symptom cluster-diabetes risk studies, 7 were in favor of the somatic cluster, and 5 were similar or null. LIMITATIONS Limitations in study design, sample selection, variable measurement, and analytic approach in these literatures apply to this review. CONCLUSIONS Atypical MDD and the somatic cluster are most consistently associated with obesity and diabetes risk. Future research is needed to establish directionality and causality. Identifying the depression facets conferring the greatest risk could improve cardiometabolic disease risk stratification and prevention programs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Metabolic syndrome (MetS), i.e. the cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors comprising visceral obesity, impaired glucose metabolism, arterial hypertension and atherogenic dyslipidemia, is prevalent globally and exacts a heavy toll on health care expenditures. AREAS COVERED The pathophenotypes of individual traits of the MetS in adults are discussed first, with strong emphasis on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and sex differences. Next, I discuss recent studies on phenotypic and outcome heterogeneity of the MetS, highlighting the role of NAFLD, sex, reproductive status, and depressive disorders. In the second half of the article, the therapeutic implications of the variable MetS types and features are analyzed, focusing on the most recent developments, and guidelines. EXPERT OPINION I have identified physiological, pathological, social and medical sources of phenotypical heterogeneity in the MetS and its constitutive traits. Improved understanding of these variables may be utilized in the setting of future precision medicine approaches in the field of metabolic disorders and target organ damage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and obesity are bidirectionally related, but the amount of weight-gain secondary to MDD is unknown. We aimed to estimate the adjusted effect of MDD on weight-change in prospective studies compared to individuals without MDD. METHODS Scopus/MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Web of Science and Cochrane were systematically searched for prospective observational studies of participants with a diagnosis of MDD. We included studies that conducted regression analyses on weight-variables. We searched for weight-variables reported at baseline, follow-up, and regression analyses. A meta-analysis of the odds ratios reported in logistic regression models was performed using the generic inverse weight variance method. RESULTS Eight studies were included with a total of 60,443 subjects; 56.8 % with MDD. Weight-variables included weight, BMI, waist circumference, fat mass, and obesity incidence. In three follow-up reports, weight-variables increased more in participants with MDD and its subphenotypes than in control subjects, except for one MDD subphenotype. Meta-analysis of three eligible studies (n = 21,935) showed a significantly greater likelihood of incident obesity in participants with MDD (OR:1.48, 95%CI 1.03-2.13). MDD subphenotype reports might suggest a greater risk for atypical MDD. LIMITATIONS Heterogeneity in weight related variables, follow-ups, and regression models; scarcity of follow-up data; and limited studies eligible for meta-analysis. CONCLUSIONS Despite previous associations between MDD and obesity, current prospective evidence on MDD related weight-change is scarce and heterogeneous. Our findings suggest a need to standardize weight-change assessment in MDD trials. Moreover, careful weight tracking and management should be incorporated in clinical settings. Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychosocial stress and depressive disorder have been associated with cancer as putative contributors to worse prognosis. On the other hand, cancer diagnosis is a recognised life event that can contribute to distress and depressive states. Humoral and cellular inflammation can promote depressive disorder by means of decreased monoamine synthesis, glutamate neurotoxicity, neurogenesis and neuroplasticity, dysregulated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and glucocorticoid resistance. This protocol objectives are to observe the interactions between psychosocial variables and biochemical and immunological biomarkers in a longitudinal, prospective design; to identify inflammation-related depression endophenotypes in breast cancer patients and to understand if early diagnosed and treated depression in this population will translate in better inflammation status and better global prognosis. METHODS Prospective observational cohort, composed by 100 consecutive premenopausal patients, diagnosed with non-distant metastatic breast carcinoma and with no history of major psychopathology or other organic illness. The participants will have an in-person assessment in three different moments, along illness treatment and follow-up, with respect to cytometric, immunologic, and psychosocial parameters and will be tested for depression vulnerability and resilience inflammation-related functional genetic polymorphisms. Additionally, at years 5 and 10 post enrollment, patients`medical records will be assessed. As a control cohort, all patients excluded due to psychiatric history or past psychiatric treatments will have their clinical records assessed at years 5 and 10 after admission. All the data will be managed with the SPSS® software. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION This study is an original longitudinal cohort of breast cancer premenopausal patients, with a comprehensive approach to psychosocial, clinical, inflammatory, and genetic variables. It expects to provide evidence regarding the links between genetic, cytometric, immunologic, and psychosocial factors, their potential contribution to the pathophysiology of depressive disorder, breast cancer course, progression, and prognosis. It may further contribute with data to better efficacy of the psycho-oncological interventions. Abstract
BACKGROUND Overweight/obesity and depression are highly co-occurring conditions with shared pathophysiology as well as social and economic determinants. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review aims to comprehensively synthesize extant literature with a focus on the effectiveness of interventions targeting obesity and depression comorbidity. METHODS We searched databases including MEDLINE, ProQuest Central, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, from inception of the databases until Nov 12, 2021. Articles were included if they reported on the effects of pharmacological, psychological or dietary interventions on comorbid depression and overweight/obesity as their primary or secondary outcome. RESULTS Of the 5480 identified records, 19 eligible researches comprising 15 RCTs and 4 uncontrolled longitudinal studies for 3408 participants with comorbid depression and overweight/obesity. The available literature is not sufficient to inform evidence-based treatments targeting obesity and comorbid depression contemporaneously. Notwithstanding, the combination of CBT and lifestyle intervention show efficacy targeting obesity and comorbid depression as do some nutritional supplements, antidepressants and anti-diabetic agents. LIMITATIONS The high heterogeneity of various interventions in the included studies may cause a lack of comparability between different studies. CONCLUSIONS Concurrent management of depression and overweight/obesity is suggested by available data. There is a pressing need for studies that evaluate the effectiveness in real world samples of persons experiencing multiple co-occurring chronic diseases including but not limited to depression and overweight/obesity.

Associations of somatic depressive symptoms with body mass index, systemic inflammation, and insulin resistance in primary care patients with depression. J Behav Med 2022; 45:882-893. Abstract
The somatic depressive symptom cluster (including appetite and sleep disturbances) is more strongly associated with insulin resistance (a diabetes risk marker) than other depressive symptom clusters. Utilizing baseline data from 129 primary care patients with depression but no diabetes in the eIMPACT trial (Mage = 59 years, 78% female, 50% Black), we examined associations of somatic depressive symptoms with insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), body mass index (BMI), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). We tested BMI and hsCRP as mediators and race as a moderator of these relationships. Hyperphagia was positively associated HOMA-IR (β = 0.19, p = .048) and BMI (β = 0.30, p < .001); poor appetite was negatively associated with HOMA-IR (β = -0.24, p = .02); hypersomnia was positively associated with HOMA-IR (β = 0.28, p = .003), BMI (β = 0.26, p = .003), and hsCRP (β = 0.23, p = .01); and disturbed sleep was positively associated with hsCRP (β = 0.21, p = .04). BMI partially mediated hyperphagia and hypersomnia's associations with HOMA-IR; hsCRP partially mediated the hypersomnia-HOMA-IR association; and race moderated the hyperphagia-HOMA-IR association (positive for White participants but null for Black participants). People with depression experiencing hyperphagia and/or hypersomnia may be a subgroup with greater insulin resistance; BMI and hsCRP are likely pathways in these relationships. This study highlights the importance of considering the direction of somatic depressive symptoms in the context of cardiometabolic disease risk.

Abstract
Background: Caffeine has been associated with a dose-dependent variety of mental health changes, which have been found to precede or be a complication of overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms after menopause. The current study examines the effects of low and moderate caffeine intake on anxiety, depression, sleep, and stress in postmenopausal females with OAB. Materials and Methods: Eighty-one females were randomized in a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Participants were allocated to 200 mg/day caffeine, 400 mg/day caffeine, and placebo capsules for 1 week each in a crossover design and evaluated using validated mental health questionnaires. Symptoms during each treatment phase were measured using Beck Anxiety and Depression Inventory, Insomnia Severity Index, and Perceived Stress Scale. Linear regression models were used to examine the impact of low (200 mg/day) and moderate (400 mg/day) dose of caffeine and placebo on mental health. Results: Fifty-six female participants finished the study. The mean age was 69.2 years (58.0-84.0 years). Two females dropped out during the treatment phase with 400 mg/day caffeine intake due to side effects associated with headaches and nausea. Moderate dose of caffeine showed a small positive effect on mental health, specifically a decrease in anxiety during 7 days of exposure (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Moderate caffeine use may decrease anxiety in postmenopausal patients with underlying OAB, whereas depression, insomnia, and perceived stress were not affected by low-to-moderate caffeine intake. Our results support that counseling efforts on moderate caffeine consumption in postmenopausal patients underline that low-to moderate caffeine intake may be appropriate and possibly beneficial unless contraindicated due to other underlying conditions. Abstract
Abstract
Background
Patients with depression are at a higher risk of developing serious medical problems such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, increasing the burden of depression and worsening its outcome.
Recent studies revealed the presence of low-grade systemic inflammation and metabolic impairments which are playing an important role in the development of these medical problems among patients with depression.
It should be noted that not all patients with depressive disorder have these immune or metabolic impairments.
The study aims to evaluate inflammatory and metabolic impairments among patients with depression through categorizing patients with depression into four dimensional profilers which are (1) atypical energy-related symptom dimension, (2) melancholic dimension, (3) childhood trauma dimension, and (4) anxious distress dimension.
Also, the current study will evaluate inflammatory and metabolic impairments among patients with depression and a control group.
Results
This study highlights that of the patients with metabolic impairments (including hypertension, impaired glycemic control, low/high-density lipoprotein, elevated triglycerides, and central obesity), all of them had reported significantly higher scores in the atypical, energy-related symptom dimension.
Also, patients with impaired glycemic control had reported significantly (p < 0.001) high scores in the anxious distress symptom dimension.
While patients with inflammatory impairment (serum CRP > 3 mg/L) had significantly (p = 0.009) reported higher scores in the childhood trauma symptom dimension.
In addition, statistically significant metabolic and inflammatory impairments are detected among the depression cases group in comparison with the control group.
Conclusions
This study found that patients with depression presented by atypical, energy-related symptoms were at a higher risk of metabolic impairments than other depression profilers.
Also, patients of the Anxious distress symptom dimension reported significant impaired glycemic control.
In addition, patients with depression of the childhood trauma dimension were associated with high levels of inflammatory marker (C-reactive protein).
Potential implications
These results can be applied clinically to improve treatment and prognosis in patients with depression. For example, depressed patients with atypical, energy-related symptoms should increase their daily physical activities and exercise, and they should follow a special diet. Also, anti-inflammatory medications could be added to depressed patients of the childhood trauma dimension.

Abstract
Negative urgency - acting rashly in response to negative emotions - is a risk factor for central adiposity. We examine whether the relationship between negative urgency and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is mediated by eating behaviors (emotional eating, external eating, and cognitive restraint) and moderated by depressive symptom severity, factors that could be targeted to reduce risk associated with negative urgency. Using baseline data from the Nathan Kline Institute-Rockland Sample (N = 872; mean age = 42.4 years, SD = 15.3; 65% female; 27% non-White; mean body mass index = 27.9 kg/m2, SD = 5.9), we conducted a series of mediation and moderated mediation analyses controlling for age, sex, race, and socioeconomic status. Overall, there was a positive association between negative urgency and WHtR. Emotional eating (ab = 0.02, SE = 0.003, 95% CI [0.02, 0.03]) and uncontrolled eating (ab = 0.008, SE = 0.002, 95% CI [0.004, 0.01]) were partial mediators of the relationship between negative urgency and WHtR, while cognitive restraint was not. In a parallel mediation model, emotional eating remained significant, while uncontrolled eating did not. Depressive symptom severity moderated the indirect effect of negative urgency on WHtR through emotional eating (bint = -0.08, p < .001) but not the direct effect of negative urgency on WHtR. Our results indicate that emotional eating is a viable potential mechanism explaining the relationship between negative urgency and WHtR, and the indirect effect of negative urgency on WHtR through emotional eating becomes stronger as depressive symptom severity decreases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The development of obesity is most likely due to a combination of biological and environmental factors some of which might still be unidentified. We used a machine learning technique to examine the relative importance of more than 100 clinical variables as predictors for BMI. METHODS BASUN is a prospective non-randomized cohort study of 971 individuals that received medical or surgical treatment (treatment choice was based on patient's preferences and clinical criteria, not randomization) for obesity in the Västra Götaland county in Sweden between 2015 and 2017 with planned follow-up for 10 years. This study includes demographic data, BMI, blood tests, and questionnaires before obesity treatment that cover three main areas: gastrointestinal symptoms and eating habits, physical activity and quality of life, and psychological health. We used random forest, with conditional variable importance, to study the relative importance of roughly 100 predictors of BMI, covering 15 domains. We quantified the predictive value of each individual predictor, as well as each domain. RESULTS The participants received medical (n = 382) or surgical treatment for obesity (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, n = 388; sleeve gastrectomy, n = 201). There were minor differences between these groups before treatment with regard to anthropometrics, laboratory measures and results from questionnaires. The 10 individual variables with the strongest predictive value, in order of decreasing strength, were country of birth, marital status, sex, calcium levels, age, levels of TSH and HbA1c, AUDIT score, BE tendencies according to QEWPR, and TG levels. The strongest domains predicting BMI were: Socioeconomic status, Demographics, Biomarkers (notably TSH), Lifestyle/habits, Biomarkers for cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and Potential anxiety and depression. CONCLUSIONS Lifestyle, habits, age, sex and socioeconomic status are some of the strongest predictors for BMI levels. Potential anxiety and / or depression and other characteristics captured using questionnaires have strong predictive value. These results confirm previously suggested associations and advocate prospective studies to examine the value of better characterization of patients eligible for obesity treatment, and consequently to evaluate the treatment effects in groups of patients. Abstract
Recent evidence suggests that atypical major depressive disorder (MDD) - whose key features include the reversed somatic symptoms of hyperphagia (increased appetite) and hypersomnia (increased sleep) - is a stronger predictor of future obesity than other MDD subtypes. The mechanisms underlying this relationship are unclear. The present study sought to elucidate whether the individual symptoms of hyperphagia, hypersomnia, poor appetite, and disturbed sleep have differential relationships with food attentional bias, emotional eating, external eating, and restrained eating. This cross-sectional laboratory study involved 103 young adults without obesity (mean age = 20 years, 79% female, 26% non-White, mean BMI = 23.4 kg/m2). We measured total depressive symptom severity and individual symptoms of hyperphagia, poor appetite, and disturbed sleep using the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-20 (SCL-20) and added an item to assess hypersomnia; food attentional bias using a Food Stroop task; and self-reported eating behaviors using the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire. Hyperphagia was positively associated with emotional eating but negatively associated with food attentional bias. Hypersomnia was negatively associated with emotional eating. Poor appetite was negatively associated with emotional eating. Disturbed sleep was positively associated with food attentional bias and emotional eating. An aggregate of the remaining 15 depressive symptoms (SCL-15) was positively associated with emotional and restrained eating. Our findings highlight the importance of examining the direction of somatic depressive symptoms, and they set the stage for future research to identify subgroups of people with depression at greatest risk for obesity (e.g., those with hyperphagia and/or disturbed sleep) and the mechanisms responsible for this elevated risk (e.g., emotional eating).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the prevalence of depression in college students and determine how social support and healthy lifestyle factors are associated with depression in this population. DESIGN A cross-sectional design. SETTING A comprehensive university in Changsha, Hunan, South China. The study was conducted from May to June 2019. PARTICIPANTS A total of 541 students at the comprehensive university. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, Social Support Rating Scale and Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II (HPLP-II) were used to evaluate depression, social support and lifestyles, respectively, and analyse the mutual relationships among them. RESULTS Among the 541 participants, 161 (29.8%) experienced depressive symptoms, and there were significant gender-related and academic discipline-related differences in self-rated depression. The average social support score was 38.06 (38.06±7.52). The average HPLP-II score was 71.09 (71.09±11.47). A monofactor analysis showed that depression was correlated with social support and a healthy lifestyle. As demonstrated by logistic regression analysis, being a woman (OR=2.613, 95% CI: 1.541 to 4.43), inadequate social support (OR=0.912, 95% CI: 0.877 to 0.948), poor nutrition (OR=0.87, 95% CI: 0.775 to 0.977) and lack of self-actualisation (OR=0.644, 95% CI: 0.572 to 0.724) were significantly correlated with depression. CONCLUSIONS Owing to the high prevalence of depression among Chinese university students, educational institutions must take measures such as providing compulsory mental health education courses and improving the psychological counselling services available to students.

Abstract
This cohort study aimed to compare the incidence of type 2 diabetes in adults with depression-related weight gain, depression-related weight loss, depression with no weight change, and no depression. The study sample included 59,315 community-dwelling adults in Ontario, Canada. Depression-related weight change in the past 12 months was measured using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview-Short Form. Participants were followed for up to 20 years using administrative health data. Cox proportional hazards models compared the incidence of type 2 diabetes in adults with depression-related weight change and in adults with no depression. Adults with depression-related weight gain had an increased risk of type 2 diabetes compared to adults no depression (HR 1.70, 95% CI 1.32-2.20), adults with depression-related weight loss (HR 1.62, 95% CI 1.09-2.42), and adults with depression with no weight change (HR 1.39, 95% CI 1.03-1.86). Adults with depression with no weight change also had an increased risk of type 2 diabetes compared to those with no depression (HR 1.23, 95% CI 1.04-1.45). Associations were stronger among women and persisted after adjusting for attained overweight and obesity. Identifying symptoms of weight change in depression may aid in identifying adults at higher risk of type 2 diabetes and in developing tailored prevention strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Obesity and overweight are common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD); the results are inconsistent due to confounding variables involved in studies. Furthermore, no well-designed study has been published to investigate the prevalence, risk factors and underlying mechanisms of obesity/overweight in Chinese MDD patients. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of obesity/overweight and related risk factors in first-episode, drug-naïve (FEDN) patients with MDD in China. METHODS A total of 1718 patients were recruited. Their clinical and anthropometric data, thyroid function and biochemical parameters were collected. All patients were evaluated on the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, 14-item Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. RESULTS The prevalence of obesity and overweight was 3.73% and 56.00%, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that TSH was the only independent risk factor for weight gain in MDD patents. The fitting curve of the relationship between TSH and BMI formed an inverted U-shaped parabola. The ordinal logit mode showed that when TSH<=2.68 was set as a reference, the odd rates of weight increased with the increase of TSH, and the highest rate was 3.929 (95%CI: 2.879-5.361, P<0.0001). LIMITATION Causality cannot be drawn due to cross-sectional design. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that overweight is very common among patients with FEDN MDD rather than obesity. TSH is a promising predictor and potential biomarker of high weight in MDD patients, and there is an inverted U-shaped parabolic relationship between TSH and BMI.

Abstract
Psychiatric diseases and metabolic disorders frequently cooccur, yet the mechanisms underlying this interaction remain unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the role of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) phosphorylation in the comorbidity of metabolic and psychiatric disorders. Neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats were subcutaneously injected with monosodium glutamate (MSG) every 2 days for 10 days after birth. Metabolic and behavioral tests were performed 12 weeks later. Golgi staining and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed to evaluate synaptic structural plasticity. Changes in GR phosphorylation and the BDNF/TrkB pathway were evaluated by western blotting and immunofluorescence. We found that MSG-treated rats displayed significant metabolic abnormalities accompanied by anxiogenic and depressive behaviors, an altered synaptic ultrastructure and the loss of dendritic spines. The expression of phosphorylated GR was reduced in the brain. Furthermore, a specific agonist of BDNF/TrkB significantly reversed the reduction in GR phosphorylation, as well as the metabolic and behavioral outcomes. These findings indicate that a decrease in BDNF/TrkB pathway-dependent GR phosphorylation is a long-term effect of MSG treatment that may contribute to metabolic and behavioral disturbances.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Virtual reality (VR) is being used more and more often as a therapeutic tool in psychology or psychiatry. In recent years, VR interventions appear more extensively also in disorders such as depression, anxiety and phobia. However, there has yet to be a comprehensive synthesis and critical review of the literature to identify future directions to advance the field in this area. OBJECTIVES To broadly characterize the literature to date on the application of VR in psychiatric disorders by conducting a systematic review of reviews, describe the limitations of existing research, suggest avenues for future research to address gaps in the current literature and provide practical recommendations for incorporating VR into various treatments for psychiatric disorders. METHODS PubMed and Web of Science databases were searched for reviews on VR use in psychiatric disorders (e.g. various pain perceptions, post-traumatic stress disorder, phobias, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, psychosis, depression). The methodological quality of each literature review was assessed using AMSTAR. RESULTS The original search identified 848 reviews, of which 70 were included in the systematic review of reviews. Broadly, the literature indicates that various VR interventions could be useful in different psychiatric disorders. CONCLUSION This study provides evidence supporting the positive impact of VR therapy in psychiatric disorders. However, the impact is defined differently according to the studied area. Nevertheless, due to the continuous development of VR hardware and software, it is essential to conduct further research in the area of psychiatric disorders, especially as no review has concluded that VR does not work.

Abstract
Examining clinical features of depressive episodes may help elucidating the nature of association between depression and obesity, related to specific symptoms such as appetite and weight changes. This meta-analysis of observational studies evaluated whether subtypes of depression are associated with specific anthropometric profiles in adults. We searched MEDLINE, LILACS, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science databases, and Grey Literature for articles published up to October 2016 that examined depressive subtypes and adiposity measures among adults. The pooled effect size was estimated with random effects models. The PRISMA guidelines were adopted to reporting results, and this review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42016035685). A total of 22 articles were included in this systematic review, of which eight had data included in the meta-analysis, assessing 14 757 individuals with depression. Patients with atypical depression presented a 2.55 higher BMI score compared with those with melancholic depression. Subgroup analysis identified a differential distribution of anthropometric measures in studies conducted with Chinese populations. Among the remainder studies, only one reported discrepant results, possibly due to the exclusion of "weight change" in defining subtypes of depression. Atypical depression was significantly associated with elevated BMI compared with melancholic depression, deserving particular attention due to its clinical importance.

Abstract
Activated immune-inflammatory, oxidative and nitrosative stress (IO&NS) pathways and consequent mitochondrial aberrations are involved in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders including major depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. They offer independent and shared contributions to pathways underpinning medical comorbidities including insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, obesity and cardiovascular disease - herein conceptualized as somatoprogression. This narrative review of human studies aims to summarize relationships between IO&NS pathways, neuroprogression and somatoprogression. Activated IO&NS pathways, implicated in the neuroprogression of psychiatric disorders, affect the pathogenesis of comorbidities including insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia, obesity and hypertension, and by inference, metabolic syndrome. These conditions activate IO&NS pathways, exacerbating neuroprogression in psychiatric disorders. The processes whereby proinflammatory cytokines, nitrosative and endoplasmic reticulum stress, NADPH oxidase isoforms, PPARγ inactivation, SIRT1 deficiency and intracellular signalling pathways impact lipid metabolism and storage are considered. Through associations between body mass index, chronic neuroinflammation and FTO expression, activation of IO&NS pathways arising from somatoprogression may contribute to neuroprogression. Early evidence highlights the potential of adjuvants targeting IO&NS pathways for treating somatoprogression and neuroprogression.

Abstract
Complex interrelationships between race, sex, obesity and depression have been well-documented. Because of differences in associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and health by race, determining the role of SES may help to further explicate these relationships. The aim of this study was to determine how race and income interact with obesity on depression. Combining data from the 2007-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, depressive symptoms was measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and obesity was assessed as body mass index ≥30 kg/m2. Three-way interactions between race, income and obesity on depressive symptoms were determined using ordered regression models. Significant interactions between race, middle income and obesity (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.22-1.96) suggested that, among white women, obesity is positively associated with depressive symptoms across income levels, while obesity was not associated with depression for African American women at any income level. Obesity was only associated with depressive symptoms among middle-income white men (OR = 1.44, 95% CI = 1.02-2.03) and among high-income African American men (OR = 4.65, 95% CI = 1.48-14.59). The associations between obesity and depressive symptoms vary greatly by race and income. Findings from this study underscore the importance of addressing obesity and depression among higher income African American men.

Abstract
The psycho-immune-neuroendocrine (PINE) network is a regulatory network of interrelated physiological pathways that have been implicated in major depressive disorder (MDD). A model of disease progression for MDD is presented where the stable, healthy state of the PINE network (PINE physiome) undergoes progressive pathophysiological changes to an unstable but reversible pre-disease state (PINE pre-diseasome) with chronic stress. The PINE network may then undergo critical transition to a stable, possibly irreversible disease state of MDD (PINE pathome). Critical transition to disease is heralded by early warning signs which are detectible by biomarkers specific to the PINE network and may be used as a screening test for MDD. Critical transition to MDD may be different for each individual, as it is reliant on diathesis, which comprises genetic predisposition, intrauterine and developmental factors. Finally, we propose the PINE pre-disease state may form a "universal pre-disease state" for several non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and critical transition of the PINE network may lead to one of several frequently associated disease states (influenced by diathesis), supporting the existence of a common Chronic Illness Risk Network (CIRN). This may provide insight into both the puzzle of multifinality and the growing clinical challenge of multimorbidity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exercise is a strong determinant of prolonged weight loss in non-surgical patients. Studies evaluating the impact of exercise beyond the first year after bariatric surgery are lacking. We analyzed the relationship between reported intentional exercise and medium-term weight loss following bariatric surgery. METHODS Patients who underwent bariatric surgery from 2007 thru 2013 completed a follow-up telephone survey and were separated into groups based on reported weekly exercise, i.e., < 90 min week-1, 90-200 min week-1, and > 200 min week-1. Standardized weight loss measures including percent of total weight loss, percent of excess body mass index (BMI) loss, percent of excess weight loss, and change in BMI were compared using analysis of covariance, with years from surgery as the covariant. RESULTS A total of 872 patients were included in this study (age = 48 ± 10 years; BMI = 48 ± 7 kg/m2), with a mean post-surgery follow-up of 39 ± 14 months. Patients reporting > 200 min week-1 of planned exercise had greater weight loss than those who did less than 90 min week-1 (p < 0.05). No significant difference was found between those who reported less than 90 min week-1and those reporting between 91 and 200 min week-1. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that regular exercise in excess of 200 min week-1 is associated with greater medium-term weight loss following laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Multidisciplinary bariatric surgery teams should consider emphasizing exercise at this level to help patients achieve optimal weight loss.

Abstract
Background Severe mental illnesses (SMIs), i.e. major depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, are associated with an elevated risk for the development of type-2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disorders. Several factors have been associated with increased cardiometabolic morbidity and mortality in SMI, including lifestyle factors (smoking, inactivity, unhealthy diet), endocrine and immunologic alterations; however, the underlying mechanisms remain to be fully uncovered. It is now well accepted that visceral adipose tissue (VAT) promotes the development of cardiometabolic disorders, at least in part by inflammatory and metabolic functions. Methods This paper reviews studies concerning VAT, with special focus on intra-abdominal and pericardial adipose tissue, in SMI. Results In patients with SMI, several studies have been performed concerning VAT. Most of these studies reported alterations of VAT particularly in patients with major depression and schizophrenia, independent of body weight and body mass index. Some of the studies also reported an increased cardiometabolic risk. Conclusion Patients with SMI are at increased risk of developing cardiometabolic disorders, and display increased amounts of VAT. As studies so far were mainly performed on patients before the onset of cardiometabolic disorders, VAT may serve as a biomarker for patients with SMI to assess cardiometabolic risks beyond established risk scores. Further, interventions aiming at reducing VAT in SMI are highly recommended in long-term multimodal treatment plans.
