Abstract
BACKGROUND In 2022, Romania started an RSV immunoprophylaxis program with Palivizumab for infants at high risk: preterm infants born before 35 weeks of pregnancy, infants born with congenital heart defects, and infants with chronic lung disease. We evaluated treatment adherence from August 2022 to March 2024. METHOD We monitored the increase in the number of patients enrolled in the program and the number of collaborating neonatologists, family doctors, and pediatricians. Adherence to all doses of Palivizumab in enrolled patients was assessed by telephone interviews. The factors contributing to reduced adherence were identified. RESULTS Between August 2022 and March 2024, 1903 patients and 233 specialists were enrolled, a steady increase in both cohorts. The percentage of patients that complete their full sequence of doses decreases along with the number of doses (99% for one dose, 73% for two doses, 47% for three doses, 35% for four doses, and 22% for five doses) due to several factors. CONCLUSIONS The program remains highly regarded by both physicians and caregivers, demonstrating its effectiveness as a valuable resource for educating parents and facilitating monoclonal antibody administration as a prevention method for RSV.

Abstract
Background Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of acute lower respiratory illness among young children. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-exposed, uninfected (HEU) children experience a higher burden of RSV disease and have immune abnormalities that may influence their responses to live-attenuated RSV vaccines. Methods In a pooled analysis of clinical trials of 7 live-attenuated, intranasal RSV vaccines conducted by the IMPAACT Network among children 6 to <25 months of age with serum RSV-neutralizing titers of <1:40, the infectivity and immunogenicity of these vaccines were compared among HEU and HIV-unexposed, uninfected (HUU) children. Nasal washes were collected during the first 28 days after vaccination. Serum RSV-neutralizing and anti-RSV F glycoprotein immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies were measured prior to and 56 days after vaccination, and before and after the following winter season. Results Of 156 children, 90 (58%) were HUU and 66 (42%) were HEU. Seventy-six (84%) HUU and 63 (95%) HEU participants were infected with vaccine (shed vaccine virus and/or had a ≥4-fold rise in serum RSV antibodies at 56 days after vaccination). HUU children had higher serum RSV-neutralizing and anti-RSV F IgG titers prior to vaccination. Compared to HEU children, lower percentages of HUU children had ≥4-fold rises in RSV-neutralizing (67% vs 88%) and anti-RSV F IgG (70% vs 89%) titers at 56 days after vaccination. Conclusions Live-attenuated RSV vaccines are highly immunogenic in HEU children. Given their increased burden of RSV disease and higher early childhood mortality in some settings, HEU children should be prioritized for vaccination against RSV as these vaccines become available.

Abstract
Vaccination in pregnancy is important to protect the mother and fetus from infectious diseases. The transfer of maternal antibodies across the placenta during pregnancy can continue to protect the neonate for several months after birth while the neonatal adaptive immune system develops. Several pathogens have been shown to impair the transplacental transfer of maternal antibodies, including human immunodeficiency virus, malaria, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, and cytomegalovirus. This review discusses the mechanisms contributing to decreased transplacental antibody transfer in the setting of maternal infections, such as changes in antibody glycosylation profile, maternal hypergammaglobulinemia, and placental injury. The frequency of epidemics is increasing, and pregnant people are more likely to become exposed to novel pathogens now than they were in the past. Understanding the mechanisms by which infectious diseases impair maternal-fetal antibody transfer is important for pandemic preparedness to maximize the impact of maternal vaccination for child health.

Abstract
Introduction HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants exhibit elevated pro-inflammatory biomarkers that persist after birth. However, comprehensive assessments of bioprofiles associated with immune regulation and development in pregnant women with HIV (PWH) and HEU infants has not been performed. Maternal immunity in PWH may be imprinted on their HEU newborns, altering immune bioprofiles during early immune development. Methods Cryopreserved paired plasma samples from 46 HEU infants and their mothers enrolled in PACTG 316, a clinical trial to prevent perinatal HIV-1 transmission were analyzed. PWH received antiretrovirals (ARV) and had either fully suppressed or unsuppressed viral replication. Maternal blood samples obtained during labor and infant samples at birth and 6 months were measured for 21 biomarkers associated with germinal centers (GC), macrophage activation, T-cell activation, interferon gamma (IFN-γ)-inducible chemokines, and immune regulatory cytokines using Mesoscale assays. Pregnant women without HIV (PWOH) and their HIV unexposed uninfected (HUU) newborns and non-pregnant women without HIV (NPWOH) served as reference groups. Linear regression analysis fitted for comparison among groups and adjusted for covariant(s) along with principal component analysis performed to assess differences among groups. Results Compared with NPWOH, PWOH displayed higher levels of GC, macrophage, and regulatory biomarkers. PWH compared to PWOH displayed elevated GC, T cell activation, and IFN-γ-inducible chemokines biomarkers at delivery. Similar to their mothers, HEU infants had elevated GC, macrophage, and IFN-γ-inducible chemokines, as well as elevated anti-inflammatory cytokines, IL-10 and IL-1RA. Across all mother/newborn dyads, multiple biomarkers positively correlated, providing further evidence that maternal inflammation imprints on newborn bioprofiles. By 6 months, many HEU biomarkers normalized to levels similar to HUU infants, but some GC and inflammatory biomarkers remained perturbed. Bioprofiles in PWH and HEU infants were similar regardless of the extent of maternal viral suppression by ARV. Conclusions GC immune pathways are perturbed in HEU newborns, but immune regulatory responses down regulate inflammation during early infancy, indicating a transient inflammatory effect. However, several GC biomarkers that may alter immune development remain perturbed.

Abstract
Infants who are HIV exposed but uninfected (iHEU) have higher risk of viral infections compared to infants who are HIV unexposed (iHUU). We explored the effect of intrauterine HIV exposure on the infant antibody repertoire by quantifying plasma immunoglobulin (Ig) G against 206 eukaryote-infecting viruses using phage immunoprecipitation sequencing (PhiPSeq) in iHEU and iHUU at birth and 36 weeks of life. Maternal HIV infection altered the infant IgG repertoire against eukaryote-infecting viruses at birth, resulting in significantly lower antibody breadth and diversity among iHEU compared to iHUU. Neonatal anti-viral IgG repertoire was dominated by antibodies against viruses belonging to the Herpesviridae family, although, by 36 weeks, this had shifted toward antibodies against enteroviruses, likely due to waning of maternal-derived antibodies and polio vaccine-induced antibody responses as expected. The observed reduced anti-viral IgG repertoire breadth and diversity acquired at birth in iHEU might contribute to the increased rates of viral infections among iHEU during early life.

Abstract
Newborns and young infants are at risk for severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) lower respiratory tract infection. Passive immunity is the mainstay of infection prevention in this cohort. Transplacental transfer of maternal antibodies provides the newborn with immediate protection from life-threatening infections, however, is dependent upon gestational age, birth weight, mother's age, recent maternal vaccination, maternal nutritional status, maternal immunocompetence and medical conditions, and placental integrity. Efficient transplacental transfer of RSV-neutralizing antibodies have led to the development and approval of maternal RSV immunization for the protection of the newborn. Additionally, administration of RSV-specific antibodies to infants leads to high serum titers of RSV-neutralizing antibodies and further protection from severe disease.

Abstract
Background Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants have a higher burden of infectious diseases related morbidity and mortality compared with HIV-unexposed uninfected (HUU). Immunization of pregnant women living with HIV (PWLWH) could reduce the severity and burden of infectious diseases for HEU in early infancy. Methods We conducted a systematic review of safety and immunogenicity of vaccines administered to PWLWH and meta-analyses to test the overall effect of immunogenicity comparing pregnant women without HIV (PWWH) to PWLWH. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Virtual Health Library and Cochrane databases in accordance with PRISMA guidelines for randomized controlled trials and observational studies. Review articles, case series, conference abstracts, and animal studies were excluded. Studies were included from inception to 6th September 2023, with no language restrictions. Random effects meta-analyses were performed for immunogenicity using Review manager (RevMan) analysis software version 5.4.1, Geometric Mean Titer (GMT) values were transformed to obtain the mean and standard deviation within RevMan, the effect size was computed and reported as mean difference with respective 95% confidence intervals. The review was registered with PROSPERO CRD42021289081. Findings We included 12 articles, comprising 3744 pregnant women, 1714 were PWLWH given either influenza, pneumococcal or an investigational Group B streptococcal (GBS) vaccine. Five studies described safety outcomes, and no increase in adverse events was reported in PWLWH compared to PWWH. The GMT increase from baseline to 28-35 weeks post vaccination in HA units ranged from 12.4 (95% CI: 9.84-14.9) to 238.8 (95% CI: 0.35-477.9). Meta-analyses of influenza vaccines showed the pooled geometric mean difference in Hemagglutination Inhibition (HAI) titers post vaccination was 56.01 (95% CI: 45.01-67.01), p < 0.001. The increase was less in PWLWH when compared with PWWH: -141.76 (95% CI: -194.96, -88.55), p < 0.001. Interpretation There are limited data on the safety and immunogenicity of vaccines given to PWLWH making policy consideration in this group difficult when new vaccines are introduced. With new vaccines on the horizon, PWLWH need to be included in studies to promote vaccine confidence for this special population. Abstract
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of lower respiratory tract infections in young infants. It is an enveloped, single-stranded, nonsegmented, negative-strand RNA virus, a member of the family Pneumoviridae. Globally, RSV is responsible for 2.3% of deaths among neonates 0-27 days of age. Respiratory syncytial virus infection is most common in children aged below 24 months. Neonates present with cough and fever. Respiratory syncytial virus-associated wheezing is seen in 20% infants during the first year of life of which 2-3% require hospitalization. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) gives fast results and has higher sensitivity compared with culture and rapid antigen tests and are not affected by passively administered antibody to RSV. Therapy for RSV infection of the LRT is mainly supportive, and preventive measures like good hygiene and isolation are the mainstay of management. Standard precautions, hand hygiene, breastfeeding and contact isolation should be followed for RSV-infected newborns. Recent AAP guidelines do not recommend pavilizumab prophylaxis for preterm infants born at 29-35 weeks without chronic lung disease, hemodynamically significant congenital heart disease and coexisting conditions. RSV can lead to long-term sequelae such as wheezing and asthma, associated with increased healthcare costs and reduced quality of life.

Abstract
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading viral cause of acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRI), including bronchiolitis and pneumonia, in infants and children worldwide. Protection against RSV is primarily antibody mediated and passively acquired RSV neutralizing antibody can protect infants from RSV ALRI. Maternal immunization is an attractive strategy for the prevention of RSV in early infancy when immune responses to active immunization may be suboptimal and most severe RSV disease and death occur. However, several biologic factors have been shown to potentially attenuate or interfere with the transfer of protective naturally acquired antibodies from mother to fetus and could therefore also reduce vaccine effectiveness through impairment of transfer of vaccine-induced antibodies. Many of these factors are prevalent in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) which experience the greatest burden of RSV-associated mortality; more data are needed to understand these mechanisms in the context of RSV maternal immunization. This review will focus on what is currently known about biologic conditions that may impair RSV antibody transfer, including preterm delivery, low birthweight, maternal HIV infection, placental malaria, and hypergammaglobulinemia (high levels of maternal total IgG). Key data gaps and priority areas for research are highlighted and include improved understanding of the epidemiology of hypergammaglobulinemia and the mechanisms by which it may impair antibody transfer. Key considerations for ensuring optimal vaccine effectiveness in LMICs are also discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Placentally transferred maternal immunoglobulin G (IgG) protects against pathogens in early life, yet vertically transmitted infections can interfere with transplacental IgG transfer. Although human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is the most common placentally-transmitted viral infection worldwide, the impact of congenital HCMV (cCMV) infection on transplacental IgG transfer has been underexplored. METHODS We evaluated total and antigen-specific maternal and cord blood IgG levels and transplacental IgG transfer efficiency in a US-based cohort of 93 mother-infant pairs including 27 cCMV-infected and 66 cCMV-uninfected pairs, of which 29 infants were born to HCMV-seropositive nontransmitting mothers and 37 to HCMV-seronegative mothers. Controls were matched on sex, race/ethnicity, maternal age, and delivery year. RESULTS Transplacental IgG transfer efficiency was decreased by 23% (95% confidence interval [CI] 10-36%, P = .0079) in cCMV-infected pairs and 75% of this effect (95% CI 28-174%, P = .0085) was mediated by elevated maternal IgG levels (ie, hypergammaglobulinemia) in HCMV-transmitting women. Despite reduced transfer efficiency, IgG levels were similar in cord blood from infants with and without cCMV infection. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that cCMV infection moderately reduces transplacental IgG transfer efficiency due to maternal hypergammaglobulinemia; however, infants with and without cCMV infection had similar antigen-specific IgG levels, suggesting comparable protection from maternal IgG acquired via transplacental transfer.

Abstract
Background The impaired transplacental passage of IgG from mothers living with HIV to their infants could be one of the causes of the high vulnerability to infections of HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants, but controversial results have been obtained in different settings. The aim of this study was to assess in 6-week old HEU and HIV-unexposed, uninfected (HUU) Malawian infants the total IgG levels, the subclasses profile and the concentrations of global anti-pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide (anti-PCP) IgG and IgG2. Methods Dried blood spots were collected from 80 infants (40 HEU, 40 HUU) and antibodies concentrations determined by nephelometric method (total IgG and subclasses), or using ELISA (anti-PCP total IgG and IgG2). Results are expressed as median levels with IQR, while the proportions of each subclass out of the total IgG are used to describe the subclasses profile. Results At 6 weeks HEU infants had higher median levels of total IgG and IgG1 and a significantly lower level of IgG2 [0.376 (0.344–0.523) g/l vs 0.485 (0.374–0.781) g/l, p = 0.037] compared to the HUU counterparts. The IgG subclasses distribution confirmed the underrepresentation of IgG2 (IgG2 represented 5.82% of total IgG in HEU and 8.87% in HUU). The anti-PCP IgG and IgG2 levels were significantly lower in HEU infants [8.9 (5.4–15.1) mg/l vs 16.2 (9.61–25.8) mg/l in HUU, p < 0.001, and 2.69 (1.90–4.29) mg/l vs 4.47 (2.96–5.71) mg/l in HUU, p = 0.001, respectively]. Conclusion Compared to HUU infants, HEU infants have IgG abnormalities mainly represented by low IgG2 levels, suggesting that despite maternal antiretroviral therapy, the mechanisms of IgG transplacental passage continue to be impaired in women living with HIV. HEU infants also showed a significantly lower level of specific anti-PCP IgG, possibly favouring a high vulnerability to S. pneumoniae infection at an age when protection is mostly depending on maternal IgG.

Higher Hospitalization Rates in Children Born HIV-exposed Uninfected in British Columbia, Canada, Between 1990 and 2012. Pediatr Infect Dis J 2022; 41:124-130. Abstract
BACKGROUND Compared with children who are HIV-unexposed and uninfected (CHUU), children who are HIV-exposed and uninfected (CHEU) experience more clinical complications. We investigated hospitalizations among CHEU by antenatal antiretroviral therapy (ART) exposure, in British Columbia, Canada. METHODS This retrospective controlled cohort study used administrative health data from 1990 to 2012. CHEU and CHUU were matched 1:3 for age, sex and maternal geographical area of residence. We determined adjusted odds ratios (aORs) via conditional logistic regression, adjusting for maternal risk factors. RESULTS A total of 446 CHEU and 1333 CHUU were included. Compared with CHUU, more CHEU experienced one or more lifetime hospitalization (47.3% vs. 29.8%), one or more neonatal hospitalization (40.4% vs. 27.6%), and any intensive care unit admission (28.5% vs. 9.2%). In adjusted analyses, CHEU experienced higher odds of any lifetime hospitalization (aOR 2.30, 95% confidence interval 1.81-2.91) and neonatal hospitalization (aOR 2.14, 95% confidence interval 1.68-2.73), compared with CHUU. There was, however, no difference in infection-related hospitalizations (9.0% vs. 7.5%), which were primarily respiratory tract infections among both CHEU and CHUU. CHEU whose mothers-initiated ART preconception showed lower odds of infection-related hospitalizations than children whose mothers initiated ART during pregnancy or received no ART. CONCLUSIONS CHEU experienced increased odds of hospitalization relative to CHUU. A substantial number of CHEU hospitalizations occurred within the neonatal period and were ICU admissions. Initiating ART preconception may reduce the risk of infection-related hospitalizations. These findings reinforce the benefit of ART in pregnancy and the need for ongoing pediatric care to reduce hospitalizations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-exposed, uninfected (HEU) infants experience higher rates of morbidity and mortality than HIV-unexposed, uninfected (HUU) infants. Few studies have examined whether particular infections and/or immune responses are associated with hospitalization among HEU infants born in the United States. METHODS We evaluated a subset of HEU infants enrolled in the International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials Group P1025 and/or Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study Surveillance Monitoring for ART Toxicities studies. We determined seroconversion to 6 respiratory viruses and measured antibody concentrations to 9 vaccine antigens using quantitative ELISA or electrochemiluminescence. Multivariable modified Poisson regression models were fit to evaluate associations of seroconversion to each respiratory virus/family and antibody concentrations to vaccine antigens with risk of hospitalization in the first year of life. Antibody concentrations to vaccine antigens were compared between HEU infants and HUU infants from a single site using multivariable linear regression models. RESULTS Among 556 HEU infants, seroconversion to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and parainfluenza was associated with hospitalization (adjusted risk ratio, 1.95 [95% CI, 1.21-3.15] and 2.30 [1.42-3.73], respectively). Antibody concentrations to tetanus toxoid, pertussis, and pneumococcal vaccine antigens were higher among 525 HEU compared with 100 HUU infants. No associations were observed between antibody concentrations with any vaccine and hospitalization among HEU infants. CONCLUSIONS RSV and parainfluenza contribute to hospitalization among HEU infants in the first year of life. HEU infants demonstrate robust antibody responses to vaccine antigens; therefore, humoral immune defects likely do not explain the increased susceptibility to infection observed in this population.

Abstract
The neonatal period and early infancy are times of increased vulnerability to infection. The immune system of infants undergoes rapid changes and a number of factors can influence the maturation and function of the early infant immune system, amongst these factors are maternal infections and immunity. Infants who are HIV-exposed, but uninfected show important immune alterations, which are likely to be associated with the increased morbidity and mortality observed in these infants. Maternally derived antibodies are crucial in early life to protect infants from infection during the time when their own immune system is becoming more experienced and fully mature. However, maternal antibodies can also interfere with the infant's own antibody responses to primary vaccination. Preterm infants are particularly vulnerable to infection, having not had the opportunity to benefit from the transplacental transfer of maternal antibodies in late pregnancy. In addition, further differences have been observed in the innate and adaptive immune system between preterm and term infants. Here, we focus on maternal influences on the infant immune system, using HIV and maternal vaccination as examples and finish by considering how prematurity impacts infant immune responses to vaccination.

Abstract
Transplacental transfer of antibodies is essential for conferring protection in newborns against infectious diseases. We assessed the impact of different factors, including gestational age and maternal infections such as HIV and malaria, on the efficiency of cord blood levels and placental transfer of IgG subclasses. We measured total IgG and IgG subclasses by quantitative suspension array technology against 14 pathogens and vaccine antigens, including targets of maternal immunization, in 341 delivering HIV-uninfected and HIV-infected mother-infant pairs from southern Mozambique. We analyzed the association of maternal HIV infection, Plasmodium falciparum exposure, maternal variables and pregnancy outcomes on cord antibody levels and transplacental transfer. Our results show that maternal antibody levels were the main determinant of cord antibody levels. Univariable and multivariable analysis showed that HIV reduced the placental transfer and cord levels of IgG and IgG1 principally, but also IgG2 to half of the antigens tested. P. falciparum exposure and prematurity were negatively associated with cord antibody levels and placental transfer, but this was antigen-subclass dependent. Our findings suggest that lower maternally transferred antibodies may underlie increased susceptibility to infections of HIV-exposed infants. This could affect efficacy of maternal vaccination, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where there is a high prevalence of HIV, malaria and unfavorable environmental factors.

Mathematical modelling of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review. Epidemics 2021; 35:100444. Abstract
Background: Due to high burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), international funding organizations have prioritized the development of RSV vaccines. Mathematical models of RSV will play an important role in assessing the relative value of these interventions. Our objectives were to provide an overview of the existing RSV modelling literature in LMIC and summarize available results on population-level effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. Methods: We searched MEDLINE from 2000 to 2020 for English language publications that employed a mathematical model of RSV calibrated to LMIC. Qualitative data were extracted on study and model characteristics. Quantitative data were collected on key model input assumptions and base case effectiveness and cost-effectiveness estimates for various immunization strategies. Findings: Of the 283 articles reviewed, 15 met inclusion criteria. Ten studies used modelling techniques to explore RSV transmission and/or natural history, while eight studies evaluated RSV vaccines and/or monoclonal antibodies, three of which included cost-effectiveness analyses. Six studies employed deterministic compartmental models, five studies employed individual transmission models, and four studies used different types of cohort models. Nearly every model was calibrated to at least one middle-income country, while four were calibrated to low-income countries. Interpretation: The mathematical modelling literature in LMIC has demonstrated the potential effectiveness of RSV vaccines and monoclonal antibodies. This review has demonstrated the importance of accounting for seasonality, social contact rates, immunity from prior infection and maternal antibody transfer. Future models should consider incorporating individual-level risk factors, subtype-specific effects, long-term sequelae of RSV infections, and out-of-hospital mortality.

Abstract
Background Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an important cause of respiratory illness worldwide; however, burden data on mother–infant pairs remain sparse in sub-Saharan Africa, where human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is prevalent. We evaluated the impact of maternal HIV infection on the burden of RSV among mothers and their infants in western Kenya. Methods We enrolled pregnant women (≤20 weeks’ gestation) and followed them and their newborns weekly for up to 3–6 months postpartum, to document cases of acute respiratory illness (ARI). Nasal/oropharyngeal swabs were collected and tested for RSV using polymerase chain reaction. Analyses were stratified by maternal HIV status and incidence was computed per 1000 person-months. Results Compared to RSV-negative ARI cases, RSV-positive cases were associated with cough, apnea, and hospitalization among infants. RSV incidence per 1000 person-months among mothers was 4.0 (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.2–4.4), and was twice that among the HIV-infected mothers (8.4 [95% CI, 5.7–12.0]) compared to the HIV-uninfected mothers (3.1 [95% CI, 2.3–4.0]). Among infants, incidence per 1000 person-months was 15.4 (95% CI, 12.5–18.8); incidence did not differ by HIV exposure or prematurity. Conclusions HIV infection may increase the risk of RSV illness among pregnant women. Future maternal RSV vaccines may have added benefit in areas with high HIV prevalence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND RSV is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infection in infants. Monitoring RSV glycoprotein sequences is critical for understanding RSV epidemiology and viral antigenicity in the effort to develop anti-RSV prophylactics and therapeutics. OBJECTIVES The objective is to characterize the circulating RSV strains collected from infants in South Africa during 2015-2017. METHODS A subset of 150 RSV-positive samples obtained in South Africa from HIV-unexposed and HIV-exposed-uninfected infants from 2015 to 2017, were selected for high-throughput next-generation sequencing of the RSV F and G glycoprotein genes. The RSV G and F sequences were analyzed by a bioinformatic pipeline and compared to the USA samples from the same three-year period. RESULTS Both RSV A and RSV B co-circulated in South Africa during 2015-2017, with a shift from RSV A (58%-61% in 2015-2016) to RSV B (69%) in 2017. RSV A ON1 and RSV B BA9 genotypes emerged as the most prevalent genotypes in 2017. Variations at the F protein antigenic sites were observed for both RSV A and B strains, with dominant changes (L172Q/S173L) at antigenic site V observed in RSV B strains. RSV A and B F protein sequences from South Africa were very similar to the USA isolates except for a higher rate of RSV A NA1 and RSV B BA10 genotypes in South Africa. CONCLUSION RSV G and F genes continue to evolve and exhibit both local and global circulation patterns in South Africa, supporting the need for continued national surveillance.
