Abstract
Short-chain fatty acids, metabolites produced by the fermentation of dietary fiber by gut microbiota, have garnered significant attention due to their correlation with neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson's disease. In this review, we summarize the changes in short-chain fatty acid levels and the abundance of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria in various samples from patients with Parkinson's disease, highlighting the critical role of gut homeostasis imbalance in the pathogenesis and progression of the disease. Focusing on the nervous system, we discuss the molecular mechanisms by which short-chain fatty acids influence the homeostasis of both the enteric nervous system and the central nervous system. We identify key processes, including the activation of G protein-coupled receptors and the inhibition of histone deacetylases by short-chain fatty acids. Importantly, structural or functional disruptions in the enteric nervous system mediated by these fatty acids may lead to abnormal α-synuclein expression and gastrointestinal dysmotility, which could serve as an initiating event in Parkinson's disease. Furthermore, we propose that short-chain fatty acids help establish communication between the enteric nervous system and the central nervous system via the vagal nerve, immune circulation, and endocrine signaling. This communication may shed light on their potential role in the transmission of α-synuclein from the gut to the brain. Finally, we elucidate novel treatment strategies for Parkinson's disease that target short-chain fatty acids and examine the challenges associated with translating short-chain fatty acid-based therapies into clinical practice. In conclusion, this review emphasizes the pivotal role of short-chain fatty acids in regulating gut-brain axis integrity and their significance in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease from the perspective of the nervous system. Moreover, it highlights the potential value of short-chain fatty acids in early intervention for Parkinson's disease. Future research into the molecular mechanisms of short-chain fatty acids and their synergistic interactions with other gut metabolites is likely to advance the clinical translation of innovative short-chain fatty acid-based therapies for Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
Prolonged administration of antibiotics may be associated with depression due to the potential risk of dysbiosis. Thus, the restoration of microbial balance, through administration of prebiotics, might overcome the problem. This study investigated the mechanisms of antibiotic-induced depression, which were explored through statistical correlation analysis. The potential benefit of lactulose, a prebiotic, on this behavioral disorder was further assessed. The rats were assigned to groups receiving 102.8 mg/kg ciprofloxacin daily for 1, 8, 15, or 22 days. A different group of rat was given the same regimen for 8 days accompanied with lactulose at 2056 mg/kg. Upon completion of ciprofloxacin administration, the rats were tested for depression-like behavior (forced swimming test, FST; and sucrose preference test, SPT). They were then sacrificed for biochemical assessment in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. The mechanism studies revealed significant correlation between SPT vs. serotonin in the hippocampus, and SPT vs. serotonin, cortisol, NF-κB in the prefrontal cortex. Meanwhile, FST was significantly correlated with serotonin in the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex, while in the prefrontal cortex it was significantly correlated with cortisol, NF-κB, and IL-6. Based on the afore-mentioned results, it was found that lactulose improved FST by targeting serotonin in the hippocampus. This study indicate that ciprofloxacin induce depression-like behavior via modulation of several neurotransmitter system as well as proinflammatory cytokines in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. The results further suggest the potential of lactulose to improve this behavior.

Abstract
Obesity is a significant health concern, significantly contributing to increased morbidity and mortality by disrupting multiple physiological systems. It is strongly associated with metabolic dysfunctions, including impaired glycemic homeostasis, compromised intestinal barrier integrity, and gut microbiota imbalances, all exacerbating the risk of chronic diseases. The hydroalcoholic extract of açaí seeds (ASE), rich in phenolic compounds, has demonstrated beneficial effects on obesity and hyperglycemia; however, its impacts on gut health and gut-hypothalamus communication remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of ASE in intestinal and hypothalamic alterations associated with obesity and compare it with Metformin. Male C57BL/6 mice were fed a high-fat or standard diet for 14 weeks. The ASE (300 mg/kg/day) and Metformin (300 mg/kg/day) treatments started in the tenth week until the fourteenth week, totaling four weeks of treatment. Our data show that the treatment with ASE and Metformin reduced body weight, ameliorated lipid profile, hyperglycemia, and plasma hyperleptinemia, and decreased the oxidative damage in the gut by reducing immunostaining of 8-isoprostane and NOX-4 expression, and improved the intestinal parameters and hypothalamic gene expression. Obesity-induced dysbiosis in the HF group was marked by reduced Proteobacteria and elevated LPS plasma levels, which were improved by treatments with ASE and Metformin. These findings suggest that ASE and Metformin are promising strategies to counteract the adverse effects of obesity on intestinal health and gut-hypothalamus communication, though they act through distinct mechanisms. Therefore, we can suggest that ASE is a promising natural product for treating the intestinal alterations associated with obesity.

Abstract
Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are a group of organic compounds produced by the fermentation of dietary fibre by the human gut microbiota. They play diverse roles in different physiological processes of the host with implications for human health and disease. This Review provides an overview of the complex microbial metabolism underlying SCFA formation, considering microbial interactions and modulating factors of the gut environment. We explore the multifaceted mechanistic interactions between SCFAs and the host, with a particular focus on the local actions of SCFAs in the gut and their complex interactions with the immune system. We also discuss how these actions influence intestinal and extraintestinal diseases and emerging therapeutic strategies using SCFAs.

Abstract
The gut microbiota is a diverse ecosystem that significantly impacts human health and disease. This article focuses on how the gut microbiota interacts with inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal tumors, especially through immune regulation. The gut microbiota plays a role in immune system development and regulation, while the body's immune status can also affect the composition of the microbiota. These microorganisms exert pathogenic effects or correct disease states in gastrointestinal diseases through the actions of toxins and secretions, inhibition of immune responses, DNA damage, regulation of gene expression, and protein synthesis. The microbiota and its metabolites are essential in the development and progression of inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal tumors. The complexity and bidirectionality of this connection with tumors and inflammation might render it a new therapeutic target. Hence, we explore therapeutic strategies for the gut microbiota, highlighting the potential of probiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation to restore or adjust the microbial community. Additionally, we address the challenges and future research directions in this area concerning inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal tumors.

Abstract
Obesity-induced muscle alterations, such as inflammation, metabolic dysregulation, and myosteatosis, lead to a decline in muscle mass and function, often resulting in sarcopenic obesity. Currently, there are no definitive treatments for sarcopenic obesity beyond lifestyle changes and dietary supplementation. Feruloylacetone (FER), a thermal degradation product of curcumin, and its analog demethoxyferuloylacetone (DFER), derived from the thermal degradation of bisdemethoxycurcumin, have shown potential antiobesity effects in previous studies. This study investigates the impact of FER and DFER on obesity-related glucose intolerance and muscle atrophy. High-fat diet (HFD) feeding resulted in muscle mass reduction and increased intramuscular triglyceride accumulation, both of which were mitigated by FER and DFER supplementation. The supplements activated the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway, enhanced muscle protein synthesis, and decreased markers of muscle protein degradation. Additionally, FER and DFER supplementation improved glucose homeostasis in HFD-fed mice. The supplements also promoted the formation of a gut microbial consortium comprising Blautia intestinalis, Dubosiella newyorkensis, Faecalicatena fissicatena, Waltera intestinalis, Clostridium viride, and Caproiciproducens galactitolivorans, which contributed to the reduction of obesity-induced chronic inflammation. These findings suggest, for the first time, that FER and DFER may prevent obesity-related complications, including muscle atrophy and insulin resistance, thereby warranting further research into their long-term efficacy and safety.

Abstract
This study aimed to characterize two types of postbiotics from Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 prepared in De Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe (MRS-Pb) and UF cheese whey (W-Pb). We compared the chemical compositions, functional properties, and toxicities of the prepared probiotics. Assessments included antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, total and individual phenolic compounds, volatile compounds, individual free amino acids, and organic acid contents. Cytotoxicity and potential effects on cell proliferation were assessed using MTT and wound healing assays in HCT-116 intestinal epithelial cancer cells. The results revealed differences in the chemical composition of the two postbiotics. Citric, lactic, and butyric acids were the main organic acids in W-Pb, whereas malic and acetic acids were the main organic acids in MRS-Pb. High levels of hydrocarbons were found in MRS-Pb. W-Pb exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli than MRS-Pb, while the antioxidant potential of MRS-Pb was higher than that of W-Pb. L. acidophilus postbiotics significantly reduced HCT-116 cell viability in a dose-dependent manner (10, 20, and 40 mg/mL for MRS-Pb and 10 and 20 mg/mL for W-Pb). MRS-Pb exhibited more potent effects and cytotoxicity than W-Pb did. Postbiotics did not affect HCT-116 cell proliferation or migration. Both postbiotics increased TAC in a concentration-dependent manner in treated cells, with MRS-Pb showing a stronger effect. These results suggest that the type of culture medium can significantly affect the bioactive properties, chemical composition, and toxicity of postbiotics.

Abstract
Background: The gut microbiota constitutes a complex microorganism community that harbors bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and archaea. The human gut bacterial microbiota has been extensively proven to participate in human metabolism, immunity, and nutrient absorption. Its imbalance, namely "dysbiosis", has been linked to disordered metabolism. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is one of the features of deranged human metabolism and is the leading cause of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Thus, there is a pathophysiological link between gut dysbiosis and MASLD. Aims and Methods: We aimed to review the literature data on the composition of the human bacterial gut microbiota and its dysbiosis in MASLD and describe the concept of the "gut-liver axis". Moreover, we reviewed the approaches for gut microbiota modulation in MASLD treatment. Results: There is consolidated evidence of particular gut dysbiosis associated with MASLD and its stages. The model explaining the relationship between gut microbiota and the liver has a bidirectional organization, explaining the physiopathology of MASLD. Oxidative stress is one of the keystones in the pathophysiology of MASLD and fibrosis generation. There is promising and consolidated evidence for the efficacy of pre- and probiotics in reversing gut dysbiosis in MASLD patients, with therapeutic effects. Few yet encouraging data on fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in MASLD are available in the literature. Conclusions: The gut dysbiosis characteristic of MASLD is a key target in its reversal and treatment via diet, pre/probiotics, and FMT treatment. Oxidative stress modulation remains a promising target for MASLD treatment, prevention, and reversal.

Abstract
Periodontal disease (PerioD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of dysbiotic etiology. Animal models and few human data showed a relationship between oral bacteria and gut dysbiosis. However, the effect of periodontal inflammation and subgingival dysbiosis on the gut is unknown. We hypothesized that periodontal inflammation and its associated subgingival dysbiosis contribute to gut dysbiosis even in subjects free of known gut disorders. We evaluated and compared elderly subjects with Low and High periodontal inflammation (assessed by Periodontal Inflamed Surface Area (PISA)) for stool and subgingival derived bacteria (assayed by 16S rRNA sequencing). The associations between PISA/subgingival dysbiosis and gut dysbiosis and bacteria known to produce short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) were assessed. LEfSe analysis showed that, in Low PISA, species belonging to Lactobacillus, Roseburia, and Ruminococcus taxa and Lactobacillus zeae were enriched, while species belonging to Coprococcus, Clostridiales, and Atopobium were enriched in High PISA. Regression analyses showed that PISA associated with indicators of dysbiosis in the gut mainly reduced abundance of SCFA producing bacteria (Radj = -0.38, p = 0.03). Subgingival bacterial dysbiosis also associated with reduced levels of gut SCFA producing bacteria (Radj = -0.58, p = 0.002). These results suggest that periodontal inflammation and subgingival microbiota contribute to gut bacterial changes.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains a burden for patients with increasing prevalence in industrialized countries. Phytochemicals are non-nutrient plant derived bioactive substances with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that may prove beneficial to IBD patients. This review aims to overview current evidence on the application and impact of isolated phytochemicals or phytochemicals contained in plant extracts and essential oils on patients suffering from IBD. A systematic literature search was conducted for studies relating to the use of phytochemicals for the treatment of IBD. Ultimately, 37 human clinical trials and 3 systematic reviews providing human IBD patient data relevant to phytochemicals as therapeutic agents were included. Phytochemicals in the form of curcumin, Plantago ovata seeds, polyphenon E, silymarin, resveratrol supplements or an herbal preparation of myrrh, chamomile and coffee charcoal have evidence from human clinical trials supporting their safety and beneficial effects. Cannabinoids improve quality of life but not IBD outcomes. The addition of probiotics like B. longum to fructo-oligosaccharides promote healthy composition of the gut microbiome. Phytochemicals like mastiha, anthocyanins, berberine, tormentil, T2, ecabet sodium and Pycnogenol need more well-designed trials. Systematic research on phytochemicals can lead to the discovery of useful therapeutics. These secondary metabolites can be incorporated in current IBD treatment strategies to limit side effects, promote mucosal healing and provide higher quality of life to patients.

Abstract
The prevalence of overweight, obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and steatotic liver disease is rapidly increasing worldwide with a huge economic burden in terms of morbidity and mortality. Several genetic and environmental factors are involved in the onset and development of metabolic disorders and related complications. A critical role also exists for the gut microbiota, a complex polymicrobial ecology at the interface of the internal and external environment. The gut microbiota contributes to food digestion and transformation, caloric intake, and immune response of the host, keeping the homeostatic control in health. Mechanisms of disease include enhanced energy extraction from the non-digestible dietary carbohydrates, increased gut permeability and translocation of bacterial metabolites which activate a chronic low-grade systemic inflammation and insulin resistance, as precursors of tangible metabolic disorders involving glucose and lipid homeostasis. The ultimate causative role of gut microbiota in this respect remains to be elucidated, as well as the therapeutic value of manipulating the gut microbiota by diet, pre- and pro- synbiotics, or fecal microbial transplantation.

Abstract
There is clearly an unmet need for more effective and safer treatments for multiple sclerosis (MS). Our previous studies showed a significant therapeutic effect of matrine, a monomer of traditional herbal medicine, on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mice. To explore the mechanism of matrine action, we used 16S rRNA sequencing technology to determine the gut microbes in matrine-treated EAE mice and controls. The concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were then tested by metabonomics. Finally, we established pseudo-sterile mice and transplanted into them fecal microbiota, which had been obtained from the high-dose matrine-treated EAE mice to test the effects of matrine. The results showed that matrine could restore the diversity of gut microbiota and promote the production of SCFAs in EAE mice. Transplantation of fecal microbiota from matrine-treated mice significantly alleviated EAE severity, reduced CNS inflammatory infiltration and demyelination, and decreased the level of IL-17 but increased IL-10 in sera of mice. In conclusion, matrine treatment can regulate gut microbiota and metabolites and halt the progression of MS.

Abstract
Metabolic disorders caused by the imbalance of gut microbiota have been associated with the consumption of processed foods. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of antimicrobial food additives (benzoate, sorbate, nitrite, and bisulfite) and sweeteners (saccharin, stevia, sucralose, aspartame, and cyclamate) on the growth and metabolism of some gut and potentially probiotic bacterial species. The effects on the growth of Bifidobacterium longum, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis cultures were investigated using a turbidimetric test and by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). To evaluate the metabolic activity, the cultures were exposed to compounds with the highest antimicrobial activity, subjected to cultivation with inulin (1.5%), and analyzed by liquid chromatography for the production of short-chain fatty acids (acetate, propionate, and butyrate). The results showed that potassium sorbate (25 mg/mL), sodium bisulfite (0.7 mg/mL), sodium benzoate, and saccharin (5 mg/mL) presented greater antimicrobial activity against the studied species. L. lactis and L. acidophilus bacteria had reduced short-chain fatty acid production after exposure to saccharin and sorbate, and B. longum after exposure to sorbate, in comparison to controls (acetic acid reduction 1387 μg/mL and propionic 23 μg/mL p < 0.05).

Abstract
A dysbiotic intestinal microbiome has been linked to chronic diseases such as obesity, which may suggest that interventions that target the microbiome may be useful in treating obesity and its complications. Appetite dysregulation and chronic systemic low-grade inflammation, such as that observed in obesity, are possibly linked with the intestinal microbiome and are potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of obesity via the microbiome. Dietary pulses (e.g., common beans) are composed of nutrients and compounds that possess the potential to modulate the gut microbiota composition and function which can in turn improve appetite regulation and chronic inflammation in obesity. This narrative review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the connection between the gut microbiome and obesity, appetite regulation, and systemic and adipose tissue inflammation. More specifically, it highlights the efficacy of interventions employing dietary common beans as a means to improve gut microbiota composition and/or function, appetite regulation, and inflammation in both rodent obesity and in humans. Collectively, results presented and discussed herein provide insight on the gaps in knowledge necessary for a comprehensive understanding of the potential of beans as a treatment for obesity while highlighting what further research is required to gain this understanding.

Abstract
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a common environmental pollutant that poses a major hazard to both humans and animals. Acacia senegal (Gum) is well-known for having antioxidant and anti-inflammatory bioactive compounds. Our study aimed to scout the nephroprotective effects of Acacia gum (Gum) against AFB1-induced renal damage. Four groups of rats were designed: Control, Gum (7.5 mg/kg), AFB1 (200 µg/kg b.w) and AFB1-Gum, rats were co-treated with both Gum and AFB1. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis was done to determine the phytochemical constituents in Gum. AFB1 triggered profound alterations in kidney function parameters (urea, creatinine, uric acid, and alkaline phosphatase) and renal histological architecture. Additionally, AFB1 exposure evoked up-regulation of mRNA expression levels of inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and nuclear factor kB p65 (NF-κB/P65) in renal tissue. The oxidative distress and apoptotic cascade are also instigated by AFB1 intoxication as depicted in down-regulated protein expression of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and superoxide dismutase type 1 (SOD1) along with upregulation of cytochrome c (Cyto c), and cleaved Caspase3 (Casp3-17 and 19) in renal tissue. In conclusion, current study obviously confirms the alleviating effects of Gum supplementation against AFB1-induced renal dysfunction, oxidative harm, inflammation, and cell death. These mitigating effects are suggested to be attributed to Gum's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Our results recommend Gum supplementation as add-on agents to food that might aid in protection from AFB1-induced nephrotoxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Caulerpa lentillifera has received extensive attention regarding expansion of its farming and increasing consumption. In our previous study, the structure of C. lentillifera polysaccharide (CLP) was elucidated. However, little information is available about its health effects. In this study, the anti-obesity effect of CLP was investigated by using a high-fat diet-induced obese mice model with two different supplementation methods. RESULTS In vitro simulated digestion results showed that CLP significantly decreased the lipid digestibility and induced the lipid droplets aggregation in the intestinal stage to inhibit the absorption of lipids. As revealed by 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing and non-targeted metabolomics, supplement of CLP by both pre-prandial gavage and free feeding patterns effectively prevented mice obesity via ameliorating intestinal flora disturbance and regulating bile acids circulation metabolism. Of note was that CLP administration had no effect on short-chain fatty acids production, suggesting the anti-obesity effect was uncorrelated with their production. Moreover, pre-prandial administration of CLP had a better anti-obesity effect in lowering body weight and serum lipid levels, but the free feeding resulted in a higher α-diversity of gut microbiota. CONCLUSION The findings of this study indicate that CLP could be a potential anti-obesity nutraceutical and that pre-prandial supplement of CLP may be a better intake method to exhibit its hypolipidemic effect. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Individual physiologic responses to changes in dietary patterns can vary widely to affect cancer risk, which is driven by multiple host-specific factors (eg, genetics, epigenetics, inflammatory and metabolic states, and the colonizing microbiome). Emerging evidence indicates that diet-induced microbiota alterations are key modulators of several host functions important to tumor etiology, progression, and response to cancer therapy. Thus, diet may potentially be used to target alterations of the microbiota as an effective means to improve outcomes across the cancer continuum (from cancer prevention to tumor development and progression, to effects on treatment and survivorship). This review will focus on recent examples of functional interactions between dietary components (nutrients and non-nutrients) and the gastrointestinal microbiome, which are 2 critical and malleable environmental variables in cancer risk that affect host immune, metabolic, and cell signaling functions and may provide insights for novel cancer therapeutic and preventive strategies.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract, the incidence of which has rapidly increased worldwide, especially in developing and Western countries. Recent research has suggested that genetic factors, the environment, microbiota, and immune responses are involved in the pathogenesis; however, the underlying causes of IBD are unclear. Recently, gut microbiota dysbiosis, especially a decrease in the abundance and diversity of specific genera, has been suggested as a trigger for IBD-initiating events. Improving the gut microbiota and identifying the specific bacterial species in IBD are essential for understanding the pathogenesis and treatment of IBD and autoimmune diseases. Here, we review the different aspects of the role played by gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of IBD and provide a theoretical basis for modulating gut microbiota through probiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, and microbial metabolites.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of preoperative oral carbohydrates (POC) on insulin resistance (IR) of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) remains debatable. Enzyme-hydrolyzed rice flour (EHR) is a kind of water-soluble micromolecular carbohydrates. This study aimed to investigate the impact of preoperative oral EHR solution on gastric emptying and IR in patients undergoing LC. METHODS Patients (n = 100) undergoing LC were divided into oral-water group (group C) or oral-EHR solution (group E) randomly (n = 50 each), and the patients drank 300 ml water or EHR solution 2-3 h before surgery respectively. Gastric emptying which was quantized by gastric volume (GV) from antrum ultrasonography, IR indicators, subjective comfort indicators, handgrip strength, postoperative recovery indexes, and complications were recorded. RESULTS There were no differences in GV between the two groups before oral administration (V0), immediately after oral administration (V1) and before anesthesia induction(V2). The GV at V2 (GV2) reduced to the level of V0 (GV0) in the two groups. Fasting glucose (FG), fasting insulin (FINS) and Homa-IR in the two groups increased at postoperative day 1 (Pos 1d) compared with those at preoperative day 1(Pre 1d). Homa-IS and Homa-β in the two groups decreased at Pos 1d compared with those at Pre 1d. FG, FINS and Homa-IR in group E were lower than those in group C at Pos 1d, and Homa-IS and Homa-β were higher in group E than those in group C at Pos 1d. Subjective comfort indictors (hunger, fatigue and anxiety) in group E were lower than those in group C at preoperative 15 min (Pre 15 min) and postoperative 1 h (Pos 1 h). Handgrip strength in group E was raised compared with that in group C at Pre 15 min, Pos 1 h and Pos 1d. There was a lower incidence of nausea and earlier exhaust time in group E. CONCLUSION Oral 300 ml EHR solution 2-3 h before LC surgery did not increase the occurrence of reflux and aspiration during anesthesia induction with a normal gastric emptying, ameliorated postoperative IR, improved subjective comfort, and promoted postoperative gastrointestinal function recovery. Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The prevalence of overweight and obesity has been increasing worldwide at an alarming rate. Gut microbiota intimately influence host energy metabolism, and immune response. Studies indicate a prominent role of gut dysbiosis in propagating inflammation that is associated with the development of obesity and obesity-related disorders such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This article will review the current literature on gut microbiome and its impact on obesity and obesity-related disorders. RECENT FINDINGS An altered gut microbial composition in obesity and obesity-related disorders is associated with enhanced energy extraction from the non-digestible dietary carbohydrates, increased gut permeability, increased production of proinflammatory metabolites, such as lipopolysaccharides, resulting in systemic inflammation and insulin resistance. Gut microbiota modulation can be achieved either by dietary manipulation or by administration of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and/or fecal microbiota transplantation aiming at the improvement of the gut dysbiosis in obesity and metabolic disorders. Further clinical trials are required to better elucidate the dose, and frequency of these interventions and also their long-term impact on host metabolism.

Abstract
Aflatoxin B1 (AF) is an unavoidable environmental pollutant that contaminates food, feed, and grains, which seriously threatens human and animal health. Arabic gum (AG) has recently evoked much attention owing to its promising therapeutic potential. Thus, the current study was conducted to look into the possible mechanisms beyond the ameliorative activity of AG against AF-inflicted hepatic injury. Male Wistar rats were assigned into four groups: Control, AG (7.5 g/kg b.w/day, orally), AF (200 µg/kg b.w), and AG plus AF group. AF induced marked liver damage expounded by considerable changes in biochemical profile and histological architecture. The oxidative stress stimulated by AF boosted the production of plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) level along with decreases in the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) level and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity. Additionally, AF exposure was associated with down-regulation of the nuclear factor erythroid2–related factor2 (Nrf2) and superoxide dismutase1 (SOD1) protein expression in liver tissue. Apoptotic cascade has also been evoked following AF-exposure, as depicted in overexpression of cytochrome c (Cyto c), cleaved Caspase3 (Cl. Casp3), along with enhanced up-regulation of inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and nuclear factor kappa-B transcription factor/p65 (NF-κB/p65) mRNA expression levels. Interestingly, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory contents of AG may reverse the induced oxidative damage, inflammation, and apoptosis in AF-exposed animals.

Abstract
The rapid increase in both the lifespan and proportion of older adults in developed countries is accompanied by the dramatic growth of age-associated chronic diseases, including obesity, sarcopenia, and osteoporosis. Hence, prevention and treatment of age-associated chronic diseases has become increasingly urgent. The key to achieving this goal is a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying their pathophysiology, some aspects of which, despite extensive investigation, are still not fully understood. Aging, obesity, sarcopenia, and osteoporosis are characterized by the creation of a systemic, chronic, low-grade inflammation (SCLGI). The common mechanisms that govern the development of these chronic conditions include a failed resolution of inflammation. Physiologically, the process of inflammation resolution is provided mainly by specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) acting via cognate G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Noteworthy, SPM levels and the expression of their receptors are significantly reduced in aging and the associated chronic disorders. In preclinical studies, supplementation of SPMs or their stable, small-molecule SPM mimetics and receptor agonists reveals clear beneficial effects in inflammation-related obesity and sarcopenic and osteoporotic conditions, suggesting a translational potential. Age-associated chronic disorders are also characterized by gut dysbiosis and the accumulation of senescent cells in the adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and bones. Based on these findings, we propose SCLGI resolution as a novel strategy for the prevention/treatment of age-associated obesity, sarcopenia, and osteoporosis. Our approach entails the enhancement of inflammation resolution by SPM mimetics and receptor agonists in concert with probiotics/prebiotics and compounds that eliminate senescent cells and their pro-inflammatory activity.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The purpose of this review is to summarize the recent (past 5 years) available evidence regarding the association between plant-based diets on cancer risk from clinical trials and observational studies. Biological mechanisms and gaps in the current literature will also be discussed. RECENT FINDINGS There is a lack of intervention studies but there are abundant observational studies assessing the association between plant-based diets and cancer risk, including multiple longitudinal cohort studies and similar data from case-control studies that demonstrate a decreased overall cancer risk with plant-based diets. Case-control studies support a decreased risk of colorectal and breast cancers with plant-based diets, but results for specific cancers remain inconsistent in cohort studies. Current evidence from observational studies indicates an inverse association between plant-based diets and overall cancer risk. Future research should include intervention studies, address inconsistencies in dietary assessment methods and provide greater detail on underrepresented groups.

Effects of Selenium Supplementation on Rumen Microbiota, Rumen Fermentation, and Apparent Nutrient Digestibility of Ruminant Animals: A Review. FERMENTATION-BASEL 2021. Abstract
Enzymes excreted by rumen microbiome facilitate the conversion of ingested plant materials into major nutrients (e.g., volatile fatty acids (VFA) and microbial proteins) required for animal growth. Diet, animal age, and health affect the structure of the rumen microbial community. Pathogenic organisms in the rumen negatively affect fermentation processes in favor of energy loss and animal deprivation of nutrients in ingested feed. Drawing from the ban on antibiotic use during the last decade, the livestock industry has been focused on increasing rumen microbial nutrient supply to ruminants through the use of natural supplements that are capable of promoting the activity of beneficial rumen microflora. Selenium (Se) is a trace mineral commonly used as a supplement to regulate animal metabolism. However, a clear understanding of its effects on rumen microbial composition and rumen fermentation is not available. This review summarized the available literature for the effects of Se on specific rumen microorganisms along with consequences for rumen fermentation and digestibility. Some positive effects on total VFA, the molar proportion of propionate, acetate to propionate ratio, ruminal NH3-N, pH, enzymatic activity, ruminal microbiome composition, and digestibility were recorded. Because Se nanoparticles (SeNPs) were more effective than other forms of Se, more studies are needed to compare the effectiveness of synthetic SeNPs and lactic acid bacteria enriched with sodium selenite as a biological source of SeNPs and probiotics. Future studies also need to evaluate the effect of dietary Se on methane emissions.
