Abstract
Pyrethroids constitute a large group of insecticides widely used in agriculture, indoor environments, and in vector control. Structurally, pyrethroids resemble thyroid hormones, and have been suggested to be thyroid hormone disruptors based on experimental studies. During pregnancy, even minor disturbances in maternal levels can affect fetal brain development. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether three commonly used pyrethroids and their common metabolite, 3-PBA, were able to trigger thyroid disrupting effects on thyroid hormone production and transport, activation or deactivation of thyroid hormones, recycling of iodine, or on iodide uptake into the thyroid. Furthermore, we investigated associations between urinary 3-PBA concentrations (as biomarker of pyrethroid exposure) and serum concentrations of thyroid hormones in early pregnancy in the large prospective Odense Child Cohort (OCC). We found that the generic metabolite, 3-PBA, was capable of binding to transthyretin (TTR) at low concentrations, comparable to those reported in human cord blood. Among pregnant women in OCC, we found urinary 3-PBA concentrations to be positively associated with free triiodothyronine (fT3) serum levels. Displacement of thyroid hormones from TTR by pyrethroid exposure in early pregnancy may disturb the transplacental transport of thyroid hormones to the fetus during a very vulnerable window of development, including neural maturation. We did not find any evidence for thyroid disrupting effects in vitro for the three pyrethroids: Deltamethrin, α-cypermethrin, and etofenprox.

Abstract
Objective In this study, we aimed to explore the relationship between postprandial triglyceride (TG) and postprandial thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and compare the postprandial TSH levels in participants with normal lipid tolerance and reduced lipid tolerance. Methods A total of 81 eligible participants were enrolled and given a high-fat meal of 1500 kcal, and blood samples were collected at 2, 4, 6, and 8 hours. Fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and fasting and postprandial TG, triiodothyronine (T3), tetraiodothyronine (T4), and TSH levels were tested. Based on the postprandial serum TG level, participants were divided into the normal lipid tolerance group (NFT) and the decreased lipid tolerance group (IFT). Results Postprandial TG levels increased in both the NFT and IFT groups and then decreased over time. A higher and delayed peak of postprandial TG was observed in the IFT group, and there were statistically significant differences in TG levels at each time point in both groups. The area under the curve (TGAUC) was an independent influencing factor for the area under the curve (TSHAUC) of TSH. Postprandial TSH levels in both groups reached a trough at 2 h and peaked at 6 h, with a higher peak in the IFT group. Except for 2 h, TSH levels were significantly different at all other time points. There was no statistically significant difference in T3 or T4 levels between the two groups, with opposite trends for TSH. Conclusion After a high-fat meal is consumed, the postprandial TSH level is influenced by the postprandial TG level, which may be the reason for the decreased thyroid function in the population with reduced lipid tolerance. Abstract
Background The relationship between peripheral sensitivity to thyroid hormones, as indicated by the ratio of free triiodothyronine (fT3) to free thyroxine (fT4) (fT3/fT4), and the prognosis of metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains unclear. Methods This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2007 and 2012. MetS was defined based on the criteria established by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III). Kaplan-Meier survival curves, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, and Cox proportional hazards models were employed to investigate the association between peripheral thyroid sensitivity and mortality outcomes among adults with MetS. Results A total of 3,101 adult participants (1,594 males and 1,507 females; median age: 52.00 years) with MetS were included in the analysis. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that elevated levels of fT4 were positively associated with increased risks of both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in the MetS population [adjustedhazard ratio (aHR): 2.74, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.94-3.87, p < 0.001 for all-cause mortality; aHR: 3.93, 95% CI: 2.07-7.45, p < 0.001 for cardiovascular mortality]. Conversely, higher levels of fT3 and the fT3/fT4 ratio were found to be protective factors, reducing the mortality risk in the MetS population (fT3: aHR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.57-0.99, p = 0.046 for all-cause mortality; fT3/fT4 ratio: aHR: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.67-0.85, p < 0.001 for all-cause mortality; aHR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.52-0.83, p < 0.001 for cardiovascular mortality). The fT3/fT4 ratio exhibited a nonlinear association with all-cause mortality, but a linear and inverse association with cardiovascular mortality. Conclusion The findings of this study suggest that higher peripheral thyroid sensitivity, as indicated by the fT3/fT4 ratio, may be associated with reduced mortality risks among adults with MetS. Further research is warranted to validate these associations.

Abstract
AIMS We aim to explore the cumulative predictive value of elevated serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and visceral fat area (VFA) for metabolic syndrome (MS) development in postmenopausal women. METHODS A total of 1006 postmenopausal females were enrolled in a 10-year prospective longitudinal study from 2011 to 2021 in the community of Banknote Printing Company of Chengdu. The sociodemographic information collection and anthropometric measurements were made by a professional nurse. Fasting blood samples were drawn for chemical analysis of fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and TSH. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed to measure VFA. All the participants were categorized into four groups according to median VFA and serum level of TSH. RESULTS A total of 793 postmenopausal females without MS underwent a 10-year follow-up study grouping by TSH and VFA: Group 1 (TSH level <4.2 μIU/mL, and VFA < 70 cm2 ), Group 2 (TSH level ≥4.2 μIU/mL, and VFA < 70 cm2 ), Group 3 (TSH level <4.2 μIU/mL, and VFA ≥70 cm2 ) and Group 4 (TSH level ≥4.2 μIU/mL, and VFA ≥70 cm2 ). During the 10-year follow-up, MS was newly developed in 326 (41.1%) subjects. The incidence of MS was 29.8% (n = 53), 35.2% (n = 63), 41% (n = 87), and 55% (n = 123) from Group 1 to Group 4 (Group 4 vs other groups, p < .001). Cox regression analysis for MS prediction demonstrated that both TSH (Model 3, hazard ratio [HR] = 1.07 [95% confidence interval, 1.05-1.09]) and VFA (Model 4, HR = 1.02 [95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.08]) were not only independent predictors of MS but also involved some interaction between each other (p for interaction = .021). CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that mutual interaction between higher TSH and VFA contributed to the development of MS. Further studies are needed to clarify these contributions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have investigated the relative factors of thyroid dysfunction in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients with Metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study aimed to explore the prevalence and related factors associated with thyroid dysfunction in drug-naïve (FEDN) MDD patients with MetS. METHODS 1718 FEDN MDD patients were recruited and their demographic data, clinical data were collected. Various biochemical indicators including fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood lipids and thyroid hormones were measured. The 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17), 14-item Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA-14) and positive subscale of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were used to assess clinical symptoms. RESULTS Among FEDN MDD patients, MetS was an independent risk factor for TSH abnormality (P < 0.001, Adjusted OR = 3.77, 95%CI: 2.82-5.05). In patients with MetS, those with TSH abnormality had significantly longer duration of illness, higher HAMD, HAMA, and PANSS positive subscale scores, higher levels of TC, LDL-C, blood glucose, pressure, lower levels of HDL-C, and a higher probability of suicide attempt (all P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS MetS is significantly associated with thyroid dysfunction in patients with FEDN MDD. Related factors for thyroid dysfunction include a number of clinical indicators and psychiatric symptoms.

Abstract
Metformin has been found to reduce elevated gonadotropin levels. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common thyroid disorder in iodine-sufficient areas, and it often develops in postmenopausal women. The aim of this study was to investigate whether autoimmune thyroiditis determines the impact of metformin on gonadotrope secretory function. Two matched groups of postmenopausal women were studied: 35 with euthyroid Hashimoto's thyroiditis (group A) and 35 without thyroid disorders (group B). Throughout the study, all participants received oral metformin (2.55-3 g daily). Plasma glucose, insulin, gonadotropins, estradiol, progesterone, thyrotropin, free thyroid hormones, prolactin, adrenocorticotropic hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1, hsCRP, thyroid peroxidase, and thyroglobulin antibody titers were measured at the beginning of the study and six months later. At entry, both groups differed in thyroid peroxidase antibody titers, thyroglobulin antibody titers, and hsCRP levels. In group A, baseline antibody titers correlated positively with hsCRP and negatively with insulin sensitivity. Although metformin improved glucose homeostasis and reduced hsCRP levels in both study groups, these effects were more pronounced in group B than in group A. Only in group B did metformin decrease FSH levels and tend to reduce LH levels. Thyroid antibody titers and the levels of the remaining hormones did not change throughout the study. The impact of metformin on gonadotropin levels correlated with their baseline values and the degree of improvement in insulin sensitivity, as well as with the baseline and treatment-induced reduction in hsCRP. Moreover, the impact on gonadotropins and insulin sensitivity in group A depended on baseline antibody titers. The obtained results indicate that coexisting autoimmune thyroiditis impairs the gonadotropin-lowering effects of metformin in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Iodine is required for synthesizing thyroid hormones and regulating human metabolism. Iodine deficiency can lead to thyroid function abnormalities, which are closely associated with disturbances in glucose-insulin homeostasis. Research on the relationship between iodine and diabetes/prediabetes in adults was sparse and inconsistent. We assessed trends in urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and diabetes/prediabetes prevalence and focused on the association between iodine and diabetes/prediabetes among U.S. adults. METHODS We analyzed the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from the 2005-2016 cycles. Linear regression was employed to evaluate UIC and prediabetes/diabetes prevalence trends over time. Both multiple logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were performed to evaluate the association of UIC with diabetes/prediabetes. RESULTS A distinctly declining trend in median UIC and a significant increase in diabetes prevalence in U.S. adults from 2005 to 2016 were observed. The fourth quartile of UIC was associated with a 30% lower risk for prediabetes, compared with the first quartile (OR=0.70, 95% CI: 0.56-0.86, Ptrend=0.001). However, UIC was not significantly associated with the prevalence of diabetes. The RCS model suggested a significant nonlinear relationship between UIC and the risk of diabetes (P for nonlinearity =0.0147). Stratification analysis showed that the negative associations of UIC with the risk of prediabetes were more pronounced in participants who were men, aged 46-65, overweight, light alcohol drinkers, and nonactive smokers. CONCLUSIONS Overall, the adults' median UIC in the U.S. population was a declining trend. However, diabetes prevalence increased significantly from 2005 to 2016. Higher UIC was associated with a lower risk of prediabetes.

Abstract
Background: Hypothyroidism is a risk factor for dyslipidemia. We explored whether dyslipidemia is a risk factor for hypothyroidism. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of data from a longitudinal cohort study of South Korean adults who underwent medical examination and ≥4 biochemical assessments of thyroid function. The primary outcome was hypothyroidism (thyrotropin [TSH] >4.2 mU/L), and the secondary outcome was severe subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH; TSH ≥10.0 mU/L and normal free thyroxine [fT4] level) or overt hypothyroidism (OH; total triiodothyronine <80 ng/dL and/or fT4 < 0.93 ng/dL and high TSH values). The association of baseline dyslipidemia status with subsequent hypothyroidism was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier curves with the log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards regression models (for the entire population and respective genders). Subgroup analyses according to age (<40 and ≥40 years) and body-mass index (BMI; <23, 23-25, and ≥25 kg/m2) were performed according to gender. Results: We included 1665 participants. During a median follow-up period of 61.0 months, 24.3% (404/1665) individuals developed hypothyroidism. Among these, 36 participants (2.1%) had severe SCH or OH. Excluding patients with a first abnormal TSH level at last follow-up, 44.5% (126/283) of the patients with hypothyroidism had spontaneous TSH normalization. In respective multivariate analyses, dyslipidemia at baseline was independently associated with development of hypothyroidism in women (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 2.05 [1.31-3.19], p = 0.002), but not in men (adjusted HR = 1.00 [0.77-1.30], p = 0.991). In women, the presence of dyslipidemia at baseline was associated with development of severe SCH or OH (adjusted HR = 5.33 [1.41-20.12], p = 0.014). In women, respective associations according to age and BMI were as follows: age <40 years, adjusted HR = 2.90 (1.34-6.26, p = 0.007); age ≥40 years, adjusted HR = 1.85 (1.08-3.14, p = 0.023); BMI <23 kg/m2, adjusted HR = 1.68 (0.82-3.43, p = 0.151); BMI = 23-25 kg/m2, adjusted HR = 2.17 (0.93-5.07, p = 0.071); and BMI ≥25 kg/m2, adjusted HR = 2.82 (1.16-6.86, p = 0.022). Conclusions: In Korean adults, dyslipidemia was associated with development of hypothyroidism in women. Our findings require confirmation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are endocrine disrupting chemicals with elimination half-lives ranging from four to eight years. Experimental studies found PFAS able to interfere with thyroid hormone-binding proteins. During the first 20 weeks of gestation (GW), the fetus is reliant on placental transfer of maternal thyroid hormones, mainly free thyroxine (FT4). However, previous studies investigating associations between exposure to PFAS and thyroid hormone status mainly focused on blood samples from late pregnancy or umbilical cord with mixed findings. OBJECTIVES To investigate associations between serum-PFAS concentrations and thyroid hormone status in early pregnancy as reflected by FT4 and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). METHODS In the Odense Child Cohort, a single-center study, we measured maternal pregnancy serum concentrations of five PFAS: perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA); and FT4 and TSH in 1048 pregnant women at median GW 12 (25th, 75th percentile: 10, 15). Multivariate linear regression models were performed to estimate associations between PFAS exposure and thyroid hormone status. RESULTS A doubling in PFOS, PFOA, and PFNA concentrations was associated with an increment in FT4 concentration by 1.85% (95% CI: 0.66%, 3.05%), 1.29% (95% CI: 0.21%, 2.39%), and 1.70% (95% CI: 0.48%, 2.94%), respectively, in adjusted analyses. A statistically significant dose-response relationship was observed across exposure quartiles for PFOS, PFOA, and PFNA in the association with FT4. No association was found between concentrations of PFAS and TSH in adjusted analyses. CONCLUSION Exposure to PFOS, PFOA, and PFNA was associated with higher FT4 concentrations in women during early pregnancy. The potential clinical implications of these findings remain to be clarified.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The roles of sodium or iodine intake on the metabolic syndrome (MetS) etiology remain controversial. We evaluated the associations of 24 h urinary sodium and iodine with MetS among Mesoamerican children and their adult parents. METHODS AND RESULTS We conducted a cross-sectional study among 217 school-age children and 478 parents from 9 Mesoamerican cities. Exposures were high 24 h urinary sodium excretion and concentration (>2000 mg/d or mg/L, respectively) and high 24 h urinary iodine excretion and concentration (≥300 μg/d or μg/L, respectively). In children, the outcome was a standardized metabolic score from five criteria analogous to the Adult Treatment Panel (ATP) III criteria. In adults, MetS was defined according to the ATP III criteria. We estimated adjusted mean differences in the metabolic risk score and adjusted prevalence ratios of MetS between exposure categories using multivariable regression. In children, high sodium concentration was associated with a 0.10 units (43% of a SD) higher score (P = 0.001) and high iodine concentration was related to a 0.09 units (39% of a SD) higher score (P = 0.009). Unexpectedly, high 24 h urinary volume was associated with a lower metabolic score. In adults, high 24 h sodium excretion was related to hypertension and high iodine concentration was related to increased MetS prevalence. CONCLUSION High sodium and iodine concentrations, but not 24 h iodine excretion, are significantly associated with MetS in children, whereas high 24 h urinary volume is related to a decreased metabolic score. In adults, high iodine concentration tends to be related to increased MetS prevalence, but not 24 h iodine excretion.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a highly prevalent condition among adult males, affecting up to 41% of men in Europe. It is characterized by the association of obesity, hypertension, and atherogenic dyslipidemia, which lead to premature morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Male infertility is another common condition which accounts for about 50% of cases of couple infertility worldwide. Interestingly, male infertility and MetS shares several risk factors (e.g., smoking, ageing, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol consumption), leading to reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and increased oxidative stress (OS), and resulting in endothelial dysfunction and altered semen quality. Thus, the present narrative review aims to discuss the pathophysiological mechanisms which link male infertility and MetS and to investigate the latest available evidence on the reproductive consequences of MetS.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element mainly known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties, as it is part of the catalytic center of 25 different selenoproteins. Some of them are related to insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) generation, modulating reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the energetic sensor AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK); they can also regulate the nuclear transcription factor kappa-B (NF-kB), leading to changes in inflammation production. Selenoproteins are also necessary for the correct synthesis of insulin and thyroid hormones. They are also involved in endocrine central regulation of appetite and energy homeostasis, affecting growth and development. MetS, a complex metabolic disorder, can appear during gestation and lactation in mothers, leading to energetic and metabolic changes in their offspring that, according to the metabolic programming theory, will produce cardiovascular and metabolic diseases later in life. However, there is a gap concerning Se tissue levels and selenoproteins’ implications in MetS generation, which is even greater during MetS programming. This narrative review also provides an overview of the existing evidence, based on experimental research from our laboratory, which strengthens the fact that maternal MetS leads to changes in Se tissue deposits and antioxidant selenoproteins’ expression in their offspring. These changes contribute to alterations in tissues’ oxidative damage, inflammation, energy balance, and tissue function, mainly in the heart. Se imbalance also could modulate appetite and endocrine energy balance, affecting pups’ growth and development. MetS pups present a profile similar to that of diabetes type 1, which also appeared when dams were exposed to low-Se dietary supply. Maternal Se supplementation should be taken into account if, during gestation and/or lactation periods, there are suspicions of endocrine energy imbalance in the offspring, such as MetS. It could be an interesting therapy to induce heart reprogramming. However, more studies are necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Immune responses, especially type 2 immunity, might be related to the prevalence of thyroid nodules, while the key regulators and potential pathways are remaining largely unknown. In addition, the immune status of individuals could be affected by mixed metabolic background. Herein our aim was to investigate the adjusted association between ultrasound-diagnosed low risk thyroid nodules and immune responses, excluding the interference of metabolic effects on immunity. METHODS We retrospectively enrolled 1764 subjects who underwent a thorough thyroid ultrasound examination. To eliminate the interference of confounders, we used propensity score matching (PSM) to match age, gender, cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking, parameters that are related with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Then the potential effectors of immune responses involved in the laboratorial assays were evaluated. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to assess the independent predictors of thyroid nodules in a multivariate manner. RESULTS The 1172 subjects were remained after PSM, and differences of demographic background between subjects with and without thyroid nodules were eliminated. Metabolic parameters comprising blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein and serum uric acid were shown no significant difference between post-PSM subjects with and without thyroid nodules. Among the biochemistry and hematological parameters, white blood cell count and the positive rate of eosinophil percentage were increased in subjects with thyroid nodules than in those without thyroid nodules. In contrast, the positive rate of basophil percentage was lower in subjects with thyroid nodules than in those without thyroid nodules. In addition, the thyroid function test results showed that subjects with thyroid nodules had higher positive rates of antithyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) and antithyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) than subjects without thyroid nodules. The logistic regression analysis indicated that the positive value of TgAb as well as high level of white blood cell count and BMI could serve as independent risk factors of thyroid nodules. CONCLUSIONS The type 2 immune responses mediated by increased level of eosinophils, along with positive value of TgAb and TPOAb were associated with the presence of thyroid nodules. In addition, the potential role of basophils in protecting against thyroid nodules and the pathogenesis of immune-metabolic status remains to be elucidated.

Abstract
CONTEXT Recently, reduced sensitivity to thyroid hormone as a more common finding in the general population and its possible association with metabolic parameters has been the focus of attention. OBJECTIVE The objective was to evaluate the cross-sectional association of thyroid hormone sensitivity with diabetes, metabolic syndrome (MetS), and its components. METHODS The study included a Tehranian representative sample of 5124 subjects aged ≥20 years participating in the Tehran Thyroid Study (2008-2011). Body weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure (BP) were measured, and serum concentrations of lipids and lipoproteins, fasting blood glucose, insulin, free thyroxine (fT4), and thyrotropin (TSH) were assayed. Thyroid hormone resistance was calculated by the Thyroid Feedback Quantile-based Index (TFQI) and Iranian-referenced Parametric TFQI (PTFQI) and compared with 2 other indices: Thyrotroph T4 Resistance Index (TT4RI) and TSH Index. RESULTS TFQI was significantly associated with high BP MetS criterion (OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.06, 1.23) and diabetes mellitus (OR = 1.16, 95% CI: 1.04, 1. 30, P = .009) in euthyroid subjects after adjusting for age, sex, smoking, physical activity, body mass index, and Homeostasis Model Assessment Index for Insulin Resistance. TFQI was not associated with new-onset diabetes contrary to known diabetes in subgroup analysis. The results were similar for PTFQI. TSHI (OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.08, 1.38, P = .001) and TT4RI (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.16, P < .001) were associated only with high BP in euthyroid subjects. CONCLUSION The new TFQI index seems to be the indicator of reduced sensitivity to thyroid hormone most suitable to associate its population variations with diabetes and hypertension in euthyroid subjects; however, interpretation for diabetes should be concerned with cautions, necessitating future studies.

Association of Polygenetic Risk Scores Related to Immunity and Inflammation with Hyperthyroidism Risk and Interactions between the Polygenetic Scores and Dietary Factors in a Large Cohort. Abstract
Graves's disease and thyroiditis induce hyperthyroidism, the causes of which remain unclear, although they are involved with genetic and environmental factors. We aimed to evaluate polygenetic variants for hyperthyroidism risk and their interaction with metabolic parameters and nutritional intakes in an urban hospital-based cohort. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) of participants with (cases; n = 842) and without (controls, n = 38,799) hyperthyroidism was used to identify and select genetic variants. In clinical and lifestyle interaction with PRS, 312 participants cured of hyperthyroidism were excluded. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with gene-gene interactions were selected by hyperthyroidism generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) were generated by summing the numbers of selected SNP risk alleles. The best gene-gene interaction model included tumor-necrosis factor (TNF)_rs1800610, mucin 22 (MUC22)_rs1304322089, tribbles pseudokinase 2 (TRIB2)_rs1881145, cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA4)_rs231775, lipoma-preferred partner (LPP)_rs6780858, and human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-J_ rs767861647. The PRS of the best model was positively associated with hyperthyroidism risk by 1.939-fold (1.317-2.854) after adjusting for covariates. PRSs interacted with age, metabolic syndrome, and dietary inflammatory index (DII), while hyperthyroidism risk interacted with energy, calcium, seaweed, milk, and coffee intake (P < 0.05). The PRS impact on hyperthyroidism risk was observed in younger (<55 years) participants and adults without metabolic syndrome. PRSs were positively associated with hyperthyroidism risk in participants with low dietary intakes of energy (OR = 2.74), calcium (OR = 2.84), seaweed (OR = 3.43), milk (OR = 2.91), coffee (OR = 2.44), and DII (OR = 3.45). In conclusion, adults with high PRS involved in inflammation and immunity had a high hyperthyroidism risk exacerbated under low intakes of energy, calcium, seaweed, milk, or coffee. These results can be applied to personalized nutrition in a clinical setting.

Abstract
Subjects with both subclinical hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroiditis are frequently diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. The purpose of the current study was to investigate whether insulin sensitivity determines levothyroxine action on thyroid antibody titres and hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis activity in young women with autoimmune subclinical hypothyroidism. The study population consisted of three age-, thyroid antibody- and thyrotropin-matched groups of women with autoimmune subclinical hypothyroidism: metformin-naive women with insulin resistance (group A, n=31), women receiving metformin treatment because of insulin resistance (group B, n=32), as well as metformin-naive women with normal insulin sensitivity (group C, n=35). Throughout the study, all subjects were treated with levothyroxine. Titres of thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies, as well as circulating levels of glucose, insulin, lipids, thyrotropin, free thyroid hormones, prolactin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D were determined at the beginning of the study and 6 months later. Except for two individuals, all patients completed the study. At baseline, group A differed from groups B and C in circulating levels of glucose, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, hsCRP, 25-hydroxyvitamin D and the homeostatic model assessment 1 of insulin resistance (HOMA1-IR). Although levothyroxine reduced thyroid antibody titres, decreased thyrotropin levels and increased free thyroid hormone levels in all studied groups, the effect on antibody titres and thyrotropin levels was more pronounced in groups B and C than in group A. The impact of levothyroxine on thyroid antibody titres correlated with baseline and treatment-induced changes in HOMA1-IR, thyrotropin, hsCRP and 25-hydroxyvitamin D. The results of the current study suggest that the impact of exogenous levothyroxine on thyroid autoimmunity and hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis activity is determined by insulin sensitivity.

Abstract
Chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonates (Cl-PFESAs), are ubiquitous alternatives to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a widely used poly- and perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS). Despite in vivo and in vitro evidence of metabolic toxicity, no study has explored associations of Cl-PFESAs concentrations with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a human population. To help address this data gap, we quantified 32 PFAS, including 2 PFOS alternative Cl-PFESAs (6:2 and 8:2 Cl-PFESAs) in serum from 1228 adults participating in the cross-sectional Isomers of C8 Health Project in China study. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of MetS and its various components were estimated using individual PFAS as a continuous or categorical predictor in multivariate regression models. The association between the overall mixture of PFAS and MetS was examined using probit Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR-P). Greater serum PFAS concentrations were associated with higher odds of MetS and demonstrated a statistically significant dose-response trend (P for trend < 0.001). For example, each ln-unit (ng/mL) increase in serum 6:2 Cl-PFESA was associated with a higher prevalence of MetS (OR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.25, 1.85). MetS was also 2.26 (95% CI: 1.59, 3.23) times more common in the highest quartile of serum 6:2 Cl-PFESA concentration than the lowest, and particularly high among women (OR = 6.41, 95% CI: 3.65, 11.24). The BKMR-P analysis showed a positive association between the overall mixture of measured PFAS and the odds of MetS, but was only limited to women. While our results suggest that exposure to Cl-PFESAs was associated with MetS, additional longitudinal studies are needed to more definitively address the potential health concerns of these PFOS alternatives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies assessing thyroid hormones in metabolic syndrome (MetS) patients are contradictory. Also, the effect of MetS on thyroid function over time is not yet evaluated. This study investigated the prevalence and incidence of thyroid dysfunction (TD) as well as time trends of thyroid hormones in subjects with and without MetS, during a 10-year follow-up in Tehranian adult population. METHODS This is a prospective cohort study conducted in the framework of Tehran Thyroid Study on 5,786 subjects aged ≥20 years: 4,905 eligible participants entered the study after excluding those with corticosteroid or radioactive iodine use, pregnancy, thyrotropin (TSH) <0.1 and >10 mU/L, and missing data. Physical examinations were performed and serum concentrations of TSH, free thyroxine (FT4), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), fasting plasma glucose, insulin, and lipid profile were assessed at baseline and 3-year intervals during the follow-up. MetS was defined according to the Joint Interim Statement Definition. RESULTS At baseline, there were no difference in median serum concentrations of FT4 and TSH between MetS and non-MetS group after adjusting for age, sex, BMI, smoking, and TPOAb positivity. Although there was higher risk of overt (42%) and subclinical hypothyroidism (16%) in MetS compared with non-MetS subjects, no significant difference was observed in adjusted ORs for any TD between 2 groups. There were also no significant differences in time trends of TSH, FT4, TPOAb positivity, and incidence rates of TDs between MetS and non-MetS groups during 10 years, after adjustment for age, sex, BMI, smoking status, and TPOAb positivity. CONCLUSION MetS is not associated with thyroid hypofunction considering other important confounders such as age, sex, smoking, BMI, and TPOAb positivity. There is also no difference in the trend of thyroid hormones and incidence of TD between MetS and non-MetS subjects during a 10-year follow-up.

Abstract
Middle-aged and elderly women are at a higher risk of subclinical hypothyroidism (SHypo). Menopause is an important period of metabolic change in women and thyroid hormones are closely related to metabolic status. Neck circumference (NC) is a simple anthropometric index that reflects upper body fat accumulation. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the relationship between NC and thyroid hormones in postmenopausal women. A total of 1050 postmenopausal women were enrolled from Shanghai Zhabei communities (888 euthyroid subjects and 162 SHypo patients). Anthropometric parameters, including NC, were measured. The measurements of serum thyroid hormones were performed by electrochemical luminescence immunoassay. The results showed NC was positively correlated with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) (r = .064, P = .039). TSH and the proportion of SHypo patients increased significantly in those with elevated NC (both P < .05). In logistic regression analysis, the risk of SHypo increased by 46.4% in those with elevated NC (OR = 1.464 [1.035-2.071], P = .031). After adjusting for metabolic confounding factors, the positive association disappeared (P = .112). Multiple linear regression analysis showed there were no significant correlations between NC and TSH in either univariate or multivariate model in the total population (both P > .05). And in the subgroup analysis of euthyroid and SHypo individuals, NC was also not related to TSH (all P > .05). In conclusion, there was no independent association between NC, a simple anthropometric index for upper body fat accumulation, and serum TSH levels in Chinese euthyroid and SHypo postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Patients with NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) and subclinical hypothyroidism are at risk of cardiovascular complications that cause cardiometabolic changes, thus enabling to broaden our understanding of the cardiovascular events risk in a comorbid patient.
The aim: The study of hormonal and metabolic indicators and cardiovascular risk factors in women from NAFLD combined with SH (subclinical hypothyroidism) depending on the age.
Materials and methods: 128 patients with NAFLD were studied, which were divided into 2 groups: І group – patients with NAFLD and level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) – 4 to 10 mIU/mL (n=45), ІІ group - patients with NAFLD and level of TSH >10 mIU/mL (n=49). The control group consisted of 34 NAFLD patients without SH. Depending on the level of TSH and age, degree of cardiovascular risk, indicators of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, as well as the indicators that reflect ED were evaluated.
Results: Comparison of metabolic parameters in two groups showed a significant difference (p<0.01 between indicators depending on the TSH level, where patients were below 50 years of age: HbA1c, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGTP). The levels of CDEC (circulating desquamated endothelial cells), VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), CRP (C-reactive protein) and TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor-α) were dependent not only on TSH, but also on age. Significant differences (p=0.001) were obtained in patients aged ≤ 50 years: CDEC; VEGF, CRP; TNF-α.
Conclusions: Patients from NAFLD combined with SH have hormonal-metabolic disorders, and their degree depends on the TSH level. Early cardiometabolic changes in women are formed already at the age under 50 years, which indicates the formation of early atherosclerotic vascular changes

Abstract
The studies on the increasing incidence of thyroid abnormalities are scarce. The aim of this current study was to ascertain the effects of geographical region on thyroid abnormalities under the context of universal salt iodization (USI). We randomly selected 1255 participants residing in inland and 1248 in coast, with the determination of urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and functional and morphological abnormalities of thyroid gland. The median UIC was significantly higher for the inland participants (188.5 μg/L) than the coastal participants (128.5 μg/L; p < 0.001), indicating iodine sufficiency in both populations according to the recommended assessment criteria by the World Health Organization. However, the spectrum of thyroid abnormalities varied between regions, with hypothyroidism prevalent in inland and thyroid nodules in coast. The associations between region and thyroid abnormalities via binary logistic regression models showed that the coastal participants were at a higher risk of total thyroid abnormalities than those from the inland (OR 1.216, 95% CI 1.020-1.449), after the adjustment of ten confounders (demographical characteristics, smoking status, metabolism syndrome, and hyperuricemia). These results indicated that further investigations of the adverse effects of hypothyroidism and thyroid nodules on health burden is urgently needed to sustain USI program.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the relationship between iodine intake status and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) through a population-based survey. PATIENTS AND METHODS In total, 2691 Chinese adults participated in this cross-sectional study, and they were stratified by urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and sex. Fasting blood samples were used to assess biochemical parameters, including thyroid function and antibodies. Urine samples were collected in the morning to measure UIC. Multivariate regression logistic analysis was performed for the overall population and sex subgroups. RESULTS An inverse association was observed between iodine intake status and MetS prevalence in Chinese adults. Compared with individuals with adequate iodine status, those with high-iodine status had significantly low MetS risks, and the adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence interval) were 0.70 (0.57-0.86, P <0.01) and 0.75 (0.6-0.95, P <0.05). A high MetS risk was observed in the iodine-deficient group, which did not reach statistical significance. There was a significant inverse linear trend between the risk of MetS and UIC in the total population and male subgroup (P for trend <0.05), which was not observed in the female subgroup (P for trend >0.05). CONCLUSION An inverse association was observed between iodine intake status and the risk of developing MetS in Chinese adults. Sufficient iodine status is a potential protective factor for MetS development. Males may benefit from increased iodine intake, while females would need to achieve a more-than-adequate iodine status to gain metabolic benefits.

Association between Ménière's disease and thyroid diseases: a nested case-control study. Sci Rep 2020; 10:18224. Abstract
The association of thyroid disease and Ménière’s disease would suggest that both are autoimmune diseases. This study aimed to investigate the relation of goiter, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism, and autoimmune thyroiditis with Ménière’s disease. The Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort data from 2002 through 2015 were used. The 8183 adult patients with Ménière’s disease were 1:4 matched with the 32,732 individuals of the control group for age, sex, income, and region of residence. The previous histories of thyroid disorders including goiter, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, and hyperthyroidism were investigated using conditional logistic regression analyses. Subgroup analyses were conducted, including for age and sex. Smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, Charlson Comorbidity Index, histories of benign paroxysmal vertigo, vestibular neuronitis, other peripheral vertigo, thyroid cancer, and levothyroxine medication were adjusted in the models. The histories of goiter (5.7% vs. 4.2%), hypothyroidism (4.7% vs. 3.6%), thyroiditis (2.1% vs. 1.6%), hyperthyroidism (3.6% vs. 2.5%), and autoimmune thyroiditis (0.99% vs. 0.67%) were higher in the Meniere’s disease group than in the control group (all P < 0.05). The histories of goiter, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism were associated with Ménière’s disease (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.19 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.04–1.36] for goiter, 1.21 [95% CI 1.02–1.44] for hypothyroidism, and 1.27 [95% CI 1.09–1.49] for hyperthyroidism, each of P < 0.05). In subgroup analyses, hypothyroidism was associated with Ménière’s disease in < 65-year-old women. Hyperthyroidism was related with Ménière’s disease in women overall. Thyroid diseases of goiter, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism were associated with Ménière’s disease.
