Physical Regimes and Mechanisms of Picosecond Laser Fragmentation of Gold Nanoparticles in Water from X-ray Probing and Atomistic Simulations

Laser fragmentation in liquids has emerged as a promising green chemistry technique for changing the size, shape, structure, and phase composition of colloidal nanoparticles, thus tuning their properties to the needs of practical applications. The advancement of this technique requires a solid understanding of the mechanisms of laser-nanoparticle interactions that lead to the fragmentation. While theoretical studies have made impressive practical and mechanistic predictions, their experimental validation is required. Hence, using the picosecond laser fragmentation of Au nanoparticles in water as a model system, the transient melting and fragmentation processes are investigated with a combination of time-resolved X-ray probing and atomistic simulations. The direct comparison of the diffraction profiles predicted in the simulations and measured in experiments has revealed a sequence of several nonequilibrium processes triggered by the laser irradiation. At low laser fluences, in the regime of nanoparticle melting and resolidification, the results provide evidence of a transient superheating of crystalline nanoparticles above the melting temperature. At fluences about three times the melting threshold, the fragmentation starts with evaporation of Au atoms and their condensation into small satellite nanoparticles. As fluence increases above five times the melting threshold, a transition to a rapid (explosive) phase decomposition of superheated nanoparticles into small liquid droplets and vapor phase atoms is observed. The transition to the phase explosion fragmentation regime is signified by prominent changes in the small-angle X-ray scattering profiles measured in experiments and calculated in simulations. The good match between the experimental and computational diffraction profiles gives credence to the physical picture of the cascade of thermal fragmentation regimes revealed in the simulations and demonstrates the high promise of the joint tightly integrated computational and experimental efforts.

Ultrafast hot-carrier dynamics in ultrathin monocrystalline gold

Applications in photodetection, photochemistry, and active metamaterials and metasurfaces require fundamental understanding of ultrafast nonthermal and thermal electron processes in metallic nanosystems. Significant progress has been recently achieved in synthesis and investigation of low-loss monocrystalline gold, opening up opportunities for its use in ultrathin nanophotonic architectures. Here, we reveal fundamental differences in hot-electron thermalisation dynamics between monocrystalline and polycrystalline ultrathin (down to 10 nm thickness) gold films. Comparison of weak and strong excitation regimes showcases a counterintuitive unique interplay between thermalised and non-thermalised electron dynamics in mesoscopic gold with the important influence of the X-point interband transitions on the intraband electron relaxation. We also experimentally demonstrate the effect of hot-electron transfer into a substrate and the substrate thermal properties on electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering in ultrathin films. The hot-electron injection efficiency from monocrystalline gold into TiO2, approaching 9% is measured, close to the theoretical limit. These experimental and modelling results reveal the important role of crystallinity and interfaces on the microscopic electronic processes important in numerous applications.

Modeling Surface Vibrations and Their Role in Molecular Adsorption: A Generalized Langevin Approach

The atomic vibrations of a solid surface can play a significant role in the reactions of surface-bound molecules, as well as their adsorption and desorption. Relevant phonon modes can involve the collective motion of atoms over a wide array of length scales. In this paper, we demonstrate how the generalized Langevin equation can be utilized to describe these collective motions weighted by their coupling to individual sites. Our approach builds upon the generalized Langevin oscillator (GLO) model originally developed by Tully. We extend the GLO by deriving parameters from atomistic simulation data. We apply this approach to study the memory kernel of a model platinum surface and demonstrate that the memory kernel has a bimodal form due to coupling to both low-energy acoustic modes and high-energy modes near the Debye frequency. The same bimodal form was observed across a wide variety of solids of different elemental compositions, surface structures, and solvation states. By studying how these dominant modes depend on the simulation size, we argue that the acoustic modes are frozen in the limit of macroscopic lattices. By simulating periodically replicated slabs of various sizes, we quantify the influence of phonon confinement effects in the memory kernel and their concomitant effect on simulated sticking coefficients.

Intrinsic Optical Properties and Emerging Applications of Gold Nanostructures

The collective oscillation of free electrons at the nanoscale surface of gold nanostructures is closely modulated by tuning the size, shape/morphology, phase, composition, hybridization, assembly, and nanopatterning, along with the surroundings of the plasmonic surface located at a dielectric interface with air, liquid, and solid. This review first introduces the physical origin of the intrinsic optical properties of gold nanostructures and further summarizes stimuli-responsive changes in optical properties, metal-field-enhanced optical signals, luminescence spectral shaping, chiroptical response, and photogenerated hot carriers. The current success in the landscape of nanoscience and nanotechnology mainly originates from the abundant optical properties of gold nanostructures in the thermodynamically stable face-centered cubic (fcc) phase. It has been further extended by crystal phase engineering to prepare thermodynamically unfavorable phases (e.g., kinetically stable) and heterophases to modulate their intriguing phase-dependent optical properties. A broad range of promising applications, including but not limited to full-color displays, solar energy harvesting, photochemical reactions, optical sensing, and microscopic/biomedical imaging, have fostered parallel research on the multitude of physical effects occurring in gold nanostructures.

Plasmonic nanotechnology for photothermal applications - an evaluation

The application of plasmonic nanoparticles is motivated by the phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance. Owing to the tunability of optothermal properties and enhanced stability, these nanostructures show a wide range of applications in optical sensors, steam generation, water desalination, thermal energy storage, and biomedical applications such as photothermal (PT) therapy. The PT effect, that is, the conversion of absorbed light to heat by these particles, has led to thriving research regarding the utilization of plasmonic nanoparticles for a myriad of applications. The design of conventional nanomaterials for PT conversion has focussed predominantly on the manipulation of photon absorption through bandgap engineering, doping, incorporation, and modification of suitable matrix materials. Plasmonic nanomaterials offer an alternative and attractive approach in this regard, through the flexibility in the excitation of surface plasmons. Specific advantages are the considerable improved bandwidth of the absorption, a higher efficiency of photon absorption, facile tuning, as well as flexibility in the synthesis of plasmonic nanomaterials. This review of plasmonic PT (PPT) research begins with a theoretical discussion on the plasmonic properties of nanoparticles by means of the quasi-static approximation, Mie theory, Gans theory, generic simulations on common plasmonic material morphologies, and the evaluation processes of PT performance. Further, a variety of nanomaterials and material classes that have potential for PPT conversion are elucidated, such as plasmonic metals, bimetals, and metal-metal oxide nanocomposites. A detailed investigation of the essential, but often ignored, concept of thermal, chemical, and aggregation stability of nanoparticles is another part of this review. The challenges that remain, as well as prospective directions and chemistries, regarding nanomaterials for PT conversion are pondered on in the final section of the article, taking into account the specific requirements from different applications.

Kinetics of laser-induced melting of thin gold film: How slow can it get?

Melting is a common and well-studied phenomenon that still reveals new facets when triggered by laser excitation and probed with ultrafast electron diffraction. Recent experimental evidence of anomalously slow nanosecond-scale melting of thin gold films irradiated by femtosecond laser pulses motivates computational efforts aimed at revealing the underlying mechanisms of melting. Atomistic simulations reveal that a combined effect of lattice superheating and relaxation of laser-induced stresses ensures the dominance of the homogeneous melting mechanism at all energies down to the melting threshold and keeps the time scale of melting within ~100 picoseconds. The much longer melting times and the prominent contribution of heterogeneous melting inferred from the experiments cannot be reconciled with the atomistic simulations by any reasonable variation of the electron-phonon coupling strength, thus suggesting the need for further coordinated experimental and theoretical efforts aimed at addressing the mechanisms and kinetics of laser-induced melting in the vicinity of melting threshold.

Computational Analyses of Plasmonics of a Silver Nanoparticle in a Vacuum and in a Water Solution by Classical Electronic and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

We present basic optical responses of a silver nanoparticle (Ag309) in a vacuum and a water solution obtained by classical electronic and molecular dynamics (CEMD) calculations, where the CEMD is our previously developed force-field based molecular dynamics simulation method that incorporates the classical equation of motion for free electrons in metal and an interaction with the applied oscillating electric field (Yamada, A. J. Chem. Phys. 2021, 155, 174118)). The present work is the follow-up of the previous study. Calculated absorption spectra in the visible region with various conditions are reported together with parameter determination for realistic analyses as well as the verification of the method. Time-domain optical responses of Ag309 in water solvent are as well analyzed in terms of the plasmon resonance excitation under a subpicosecond light pulse and its thermal relaxation.

Molecular Dynamics Study of Laser Interaction with Nanoparticles in Liquids and Its Potential Application

Laser interaction with nanoparticles in liquid is the fundamental theoretical basis for many applications but it is still challenging to observe this nanoscale phenomenon within a few nanoseconds in liquid by experiment. The successful implementation of the two-temperature method integrated with molecular dynamics (TTM-MD) in laser interaction with bulk material has shown great potential in providing a panoramic view of the laser interaction with the nanoparticles. However, the current TTM-MD model has to divide the system into cubic cells, which leads to mistakes near the nanoparticle’s surface. We introduce the latest model, which performs the TTM-MD on each individual cluster instead of the cubic cells, and its high-performance parallel cluster analysis algorithm to update the cluster size. The cluster-based TTM-MD revealed the nanoparticle formation mechanism of laser fragmentation in liquid (LFL) and facilitated the study of laser fluence’s effect on the size distribution. In addition to LFL, this model is promising to be implemented in the laser thermal therapy of tumors, laser melting in liquid (LML), etc. Although cluster-based TTM-MD has proven to be a powerful tool for studying laser interaction with nanoparticles, a few challenges and future developments for the cluster-based TTM-MD, especially the ionization induced by femtosecond, are also discussed.

Low-Field Electron Emission Capability of Thin Films on Flat Silicon Substrates: Experiments with Mo and General Model for Refractory Metals and Carbon

Herein, we describe a study of the phenomenon of field-induced electron emission from thin films deposited on flat Si substrates. Films of Mo with an effective thickness of 6-10 nm showed room-temperature low-field emissivity; a 100 nA current was extracted at macroscopic field magnitudes as low as 1.4-3.7 V/μm. This result was achieved after formation treatment of the samples by combined action of elevated temperatures (100-600 °C) and the electric field. Morphology of the films was assessed by AFM, SEM, and STM/STS methods before and after the emission tests. The images showed that forming treatment and emission experiments resulted in the appearance of numerous defects at the initially continuous and smooth films; in some regions, the Mo layer was found to consist of separate nanosized islets. Film structure reconstruction (dewetting) was apparently induced by emission-related factors, such as local heating and/or ion irradiation. These results were compared with our previous data obtained in experiments with carbon islet films of similar average thickness deposited onto identical substrates. On this basis, we suggest a novel model of emission mechanism that might be common for thin films of carbon and refractory metals. The model combines elements of the well-known patch field, multiple barriers, and thermoelectric models of low-macroscopic-field electron emission from electrically nanostructured heterogeneous materials.

Ultrafast, Non-Equilibrium and Transient Heating and Sintering of Nanocrystals for Nanoscale Metal Printing

The carrier excitation, relaxation, energy transport, and conversion processes during light-nanocrystal (NC) interactions have been intensively investigated for applications in optoelectronics, photocatalysis, and photovoltaics. However, there are limited studies on the non-equilibrium heating under relatively high laser excitation that leads to NCs sintering. Here, the authors use femtosecond laser two-pulse correlation and in-situ optical transmission probing to investigate the non-equilibrium heating of NCs and transient sintering dynamics. First, a two-pulse correlation study reveals that the sintering rate strongly increases when the two heating laser pulses are temporally separated by <10 ps. Second, the sintering rate is found to increase nonlinearly with laser fluence when heating with ≈700 fs laser pulses. By three-temperature modeling, the NC sintering mechanism mediated by electron induced ligand transformation is suggested. The ultrafast and non-equilibrium process facilitates sintering in dry (spin-coated) and wet (solvent suspended) environments. The nonlinear dependence of sintering rate on laser fluence is exploited to print sub-diffraction-limited features in NC suspension. The smallest feature printed is ≈200 nm, which is ≈¼ of the laser wavelength. These findings provide a new perspective toward nanomanufacturing development based on probing and engineering ultrafast transport phenomena in functional NCs.

Atomic-Level Structure Determines Electron-Phonon Scattering Rates in 2-D Polar Metal Heterostructures

The electron dynamics of atomically thin 2-D polar metal heterostructures, which consisted of a few crystalline metal atomic layers intercalated between hexagonal silicon carbide and graphene grown from the silicon carbide, were studied using nearly degenerate transient absorption spectroscopy. Optical pumping created charge carriers in both the 2-D metals and graphene components. Wavelength-dependent probing suggests that graphene-to-metal carrier transfer occurred on a sub-picosecond time scale. Following rapid (<300 fs) carrier-carrier scattering, charge carriers monitored through the metal interband transition relaxed through several consecutive cooling mechanisms that included sub-picosecond carrier-phonon scattering and dissipation to the silicon carbide substrate over tens of picoseconds. By studying 2-D In, 2-D Ga, and a Ga/In alloy, we resolved accelerated electron-phonon scattering rates upon alloy formation as well as structural influences on the excitation of in-plane phonon shear modes. More rapid cooling in alloys is attributed to increased lattice disorder, which was observed through correlative polarization-resolved second harmonic generation and electron microscopy. This connection between the electronic relaxation rates, far-field optical responses, and metal lattice disorder is made possible by the intimate relation between nonlinear optical properties and atomic-level structure in these materials. These studies provided insights into electronic carrier dynamics in 2-D crystalline elemental metals, including resolving contributions from specific components of a 2-D metal-containing heterojunction. The correlative ultrafast spectroscopy and nonlinear microscopy results suggest that the energy dissipation rates can be tuned through atomic-level structures.

Role of Solvent in Electron-Phonon Relaxation Dynamics in Core-Shell Au-SiO2 Nanoparticles

Relaxation dynamics of plasmons in Au-SiO₂ core-shell nanoparticles have been followed by femtosecond pump-probe technique. The effect of excitation pump energy and surrounding medium on the time constants associated with the hot electron relaxation has been elucidated. A gradual increase in the electron-phonon relaxation time with pump energy is observed and can be attributed to the higher perturbation of the electron distribution in AuNPs at higher pump energy. Variation in time constants for the electron-phonon relaxation in different solvents is rationalized on the basis of their thermal conductivities, which govern the rate of dissipation of heat of photoexcited electrons in the nanoparticles. On the other hand, phonon-phonon relaxation is found to be much less effective than electron-phonon relaxation for the dissipation of energy of the excited electron and the time constants associated with it remain unaffected by thermal conductivity of the solvent.

Quantitative Ultrafast Electron-Temperature Dynamics in Photo-Excited Au Nanoparticles

The femtosecond evolution of the electronic temperature of laser-excited gold nanoparticles is measured, by means of ultrafast time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy induced by extreme-ultraviolet radiation pulses. The temperature of the electron gas is deduced by recording and fitting high-resolution photo emission spectra around the Fermi edge of gold nanoparticles providing a direct, unambiguous picture of the ultrafast electron-gas dynamics. These results will be instrumental to the refinement of existing models of femtosecond processes in laterally-confined and bulk condensed-matter systems, and for understanding more deeply the role of hot electrons in technological applications.

Nonlinear Absorption and Ultrafast Dynamics of Ag Nanoparticle

Resonant nonlinear optical absorption of silver nanoparticles was studied experimentally via open aperture Z-scan using 130 fs, 400 nm laser pulses. Experimental results show that, at low laser intensity, silver nanoparticles can exhibit saturated absorption. While at high laser intensity, it shows reverse saturated absorption. The saturable absorption is explained in terms of ground state plasmon bleaching, while the reverse saturable absorption is believed to be from two-photon absorption. Saturable optical intensity and two-photon absorption coefficient were obtained to be 1.3×1010 W/m2 and 3.3×10−10 m/W, respectively. The energy relaxation process of Ag nanoparticles after laser excitation was studied via pump-probe technique at 400 nm. Experimental results demonstrated that energy relaxation included electron-phonon coupling process with time constant τ1=(713±50) fs, and phonon-phonon coupling process with time constant τ2=(25.2±3) ps, respectively.

Optical Properties and Excited-State Dynamics of Atomically Precise Gold Nanoclusters

Understanding the excited-state dynamics of nanomaterials is essential to their applications in photoenergy storage and conversion. This review summarizes recent progress in the excited-state dynamics of atomically precise gold (Au) nanoclusters (NCs). We first discuss the electronic structure and typical relaxation pathways of Au NCs from subpicoseconds to microseconds. Unlike plasmonic Au nanoparticles, in which collective electron excitation dominates, Au NCs show single-electron transitions and molecule-like exciton dynamics. The size-, shape-, structure-, and composition-dependent dynamics in Au NCs are further discussed in detail. For small-sized Au NCs, strong quantum confinement effects give rise to relaxation dynamics that is significantly dependent on atomic packing, shape, and heteroatom doping. For relatively larger-sized Au NCs, strong size dependence can be observed in exciton and electron dynamics. We also discuss the origin of coherent oscillations and their roles in excited-state relaxation. Finally, we provide our perspective on future directions in this area.

Harvesting More Energetic Photoexcited Electrons from Closely Packed Gold Nanoparticles

The characterization of photoexcited electrons on the surface of nanomaterial remains challenging. Herein, laser excitation mass spectrometry combined with a chemical thermometer and electron acceptor has been developed to characterize the energetics and population density of photoexcited electrons transferred from gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). In contrast to laser fluence and bias voltage, the hot spots of closely packed AuNPs play a more significant role in enhancing the average energetics of photoexcited electrons, which can be harvested effectively by the electron acceptor. By harvesting more energetic photoexcited electrons for the desorption and ionization process, it is anticipated that the sensitive detection of biomarkers can be achieved, which is beneficial to metabolomic studies and early disease diagnosis.

Plasmonically Modulated Gold Nanostructures for Photothermal Ablation of Bacteria

With the wide utilization of antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria have been often developed more frequently to cause potential global catastrophic consequences. Emerging photothermal ablation has been attracting extensive research interest for quick/effective eradication of pathogenic bacteria from contaminated surroundings and infected body. In this field, anisotropic gold nanostructures with tunable size/morphologies have been demonstrated to exhibit their outstanding photothermal performance through strong plasmonic absorption of near-infrared (NIR) light, efficient light to heat conversion, and easy surface modification for targeting bacteria. To this end, this review first introduces thermal treatment of infectious diseases followed by photothermal therapy via heat generation on NIR-absorbing gold nanostructures. Then, the usual synthesis and spectral features of diversified gold nanostructures and composites are systematically overviewed with the emphasis on the importance of size, shape, and composition to achieve strong plasmonic absorption in NIR region. Further, the innovated photothermal applications of gold nanostructures are comprehensively demonstrated to combat against bacterial infections, and some constructive suggestions are also discussed to improve photothermal technologies for practical applications.

Segmented Ag-Au-Ag Heterojunction Nanorods: Pressure-Assisted Aqueous-Phase Synthesis and Engineered Femtosecond-to-Nanosecond Dynamics

Segmented metal-metal heterostructure nanorods/nanowires are very promising for development in photoelectric devices, wearable electronics, biomedicine, and energy storage due to unique surface and interface and adjustable electronic and optical properties. Regretfully, most of the segmented heterojunctions are presently synthesized in organic solvent, and its electronic dynamics is still rarely studied and poorly understood. Here, we reported a pressure-assisted one-step aqueous-phase strategy to successfully synthesize segmented Ag-Au-Ag heterojunction nanorods (HJNRs), the aspect ratios and heterojunction contents of which can be well controlled by varying pressure value. The heterojunction-induced femtosecond-to-nanosecond dynamics in 1D direction of the Ag-Au-Ag HJNRs were for the first time acquired and presented a unique regularity tendency (e.g., electron-phonon scattering time). The unprecedented aqueous-phase strategy opens up horizons of synthesis of other segmented metal-metal HJNRs, and the fascinating Ag-Au-Ag HJNRs are hopeful for the development of a new class devices in photothermal and photoelectronic fields.

Phonon-Assisted Hot Carrier Generation in Plasmonic Semiconductor Systems

Plasmonic materials have optical cross sections that exceed by 10-fold their geometric sizes, making them uniquely suitable to convert light into electrical charges. Harvesting plasmon-generated hot carriers is of interest for the broad fields of photovoltaics and photocatalysis; however, their direct utilization is limited by their ultrafast thermalization in metals. To prolong the lifetime of hot carriers, one can place acceptor materials, such as semiconductors, in direct contact with the plasmonic system. Herein, we report the effect of operating temperature on hot electron generation and transfer to a suitable semiconductor. We found that an increase in the operation temperature improves hot electron harvesting in a plasmonic semiconductor hybrid system, contrasting what is observed on photodriven processes in nonplasmonic systems. The effect appears to be related to an enhancement in hot carrier generation due to phonon coupling. This discovery provides a new strategy for optimization of photodriven energy production and chemical synthesis.

Synthetic Control of Hot-Electron Thermalization Efficiency in Size-Tunable Au-Pt Hybrid Nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles are well-known to exhibit size-dependent properties that are responsible for their unique catalytic, optical, and electronic applications. However, electron-phonon coupling, which is important for photocatalysis and light harvesting, is one of the rare properties of gold that is size-independent above a threshold value, e.g., for nanospheres larger than approximately 5 nm in diameter. Here, we show that when interfaced to a comparably sized Pt nanoparticle, the electron-phonon coupling constant of the hybrid material depends on the diameter of the Au domain. This is important because the electron-phonon coupling constant describes the efficiency by which hot electrons are converted to local heat by the primary electron-phonon scattering thermalization channel. We begin by synthesizing a library of Au-Pt hybrid nanoparticle heterodimers by growing size-tunable Au nanoparticles on Pt nanoparticle seeds. By systematically varying reagent concentration and reaction time, the Au domain diameter of the Au-Pt hybrid nanoparticle heterodimers can be tuned between 4.4 and 16 nm while the size of the Pt domain remains constant. Calibration curves allow us to dial in precise Au domain sizes, and microscopic analysis of the Au-Pt heterodimers provides insights into how they grow and how their morphologies evolve. Femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that for Au-Pt heterodimers having Au domain diameters of 8.7 to 14 nm, the electron-phonon coupling constant decreases by more than 80%, which is not observed for comparably sized Au nanoparticles. Interfacing smaller Au domains with Pt nanoparticle surfaces causes an increase in the density of states near the Fermi level of Au, which results in accelerated thermalization times through an increased number of electron-phonon interactions. The combination of precision hybrid nanoparticle synthesis and size-dependent electron-phonon coupling may be important for designing composite metals for photocatalytic and light-harvesting applications and for engineering different functions into established materials.

Resolving Electron-Electron Scattering in Plasmonic Nanorod Ensembles Using Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy

The use of two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) to study electron-electron scattering dynamics in plasmonic gold nanorods is described. The 2DES resolved the time-dependent plasmon homogeneous line width Γ_h(t), which was sensitive to changes in Fermi-level carrier densities. This approach was effective because electronic excitation accelerated plasmon dephasing, which broadened Γ_h. Analysis of Γ_h(t) indicated plasmon coherence times were decreased by 20-50%, depending on excitation conditions. Electron-electron scattering rates of approximately 0.01 fs^-1 were obtained by fitting the time-dependent Γ_h broadening; rates increased quadratically with both excitation pulse energy and frequency. This rate dependence agreed with Fermi-liquid theory-based predictions. Hot electron thermalization through electron-phonon scattering resulted in Γ_h narrowing. To our knowledge, this is the first use of the plasmon Γ_h(t) to isolate electron-electron scattering dynamics in colloidal metal nanoparticles. These results illustrate the effectiveness of 2DES for studying hot electron dynamics of solution-phase plasmonic ensembles.

c-Phycocyanin primed silver nano conjugates: Studies on red blood cell stress resilience mechanism

Green synthesis of metal-encased nutraceutical nano-hybrids has been a target for research over the last few years. In the present investigation, we have reported temperature dependent facile synthesis of silver nanoparticles using FDA approved c phycocyanin (cPC). The cPC conjugated silver nanoparticles (AgcPCNPs) were characterized by TEM, Zeta Potential, UV-vis, XPS, FTIR, and CD Spectroscopy. The temperature optimization studies suggested the synthesis of stable AgcPCNPs at 40 °C while at higher temperature system shows aggregated appearance. Molecular docking studies predicted the exclusive interaction of C, D, I, and J chains of cPC with the surface of AgNPs. Moreover, AgcPCNPs significantly (p < 0.1 %) counteract the toxic nature of AgNPs on red blood cell by measuring parameters like total RBC count, % hemolysis, % hematocrit, coagulation time, pH, electrolyte concentrations and degree of blood cell lipid peroxidation by the anti-oxidation mechanism. Skin fibroblast in vitro cell migration result suggeststhat AgcPCNPs enhanced the degree of cell movement towards the wound area. Data obtained collectively demonstrate that AgcPCNPs can be a better agent in the dermal wound healing with reduced toxicity with the bi-phasic advantage of cPC as a wound healer and Ag nano-metal as an anti-bacterial agent.

Acoustic Vibrations of Al Nanocrystals: Size, Shape, and Crystallinity Revealed by Single-Particle Transient Extinction Spectroscopy

Acoustic vibrations in plasmonic nanoparticles, monitored by an all-optical means, have attracted significant increasing interest because they provide unique insight into the mechanical properties of these metallic nanostructures. Al nanostructures are a recently emerging alternative to noble metal nanoparticles, because their broad wavelength tunability and high natural abundance make them ideal for many potential applications. Here, we investigate the acoustic vibrations of individual Al nanocrystals using a combination of electron microscopy and single-particle transient extinction spectroscopy, made possible with a low-pulse energy, high sensitivity, and probe-wavelength-tunable, single-particle transient extinction microscope. For chemically synthesized, faceted Al nanocrystals, the observed vibration frequency scales with the inverse particle diameter. In contrast, triangularly shaped Al nanocrystals support two distinct frequencies, corresponding to their in- and out-of-plane breathing modes. Unlike ensemble measurements, which measure average properties, measuring the damping time of the acoustic vibrations for individual particles enables us to investigate variations of the quality factor on the particle-to-particle level. Surprisingly, we find a large variation in quality factors even for nanocrystals of similar size and shape. This observed heterogeneity appears to result from substantially varying degrees of nanoparticle crystallinity even for chemically synthesized nanocrystals.

Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics of Colloidal Gold Nanocrystals Monitored by Ultrafast Electron Diffraction and Optical Scattering Microscopy

Metal nanocrystals exhibit important optoelectronic and photocatalytic functionalities in response to light. These dynamic energy conversion processes have been commonly studied by transient optical probes to date, but an understanding of the atomistic response following photoexcitation has remained elusive. Here, we use femtosecond resolution electron diffraction to investigate transient lattice responses in optically excited colloidal gold nanocrystals, revealing the effects of nanocrystal size and surface ligands on the electron-phonon coupling and thermal relaxation dynamics. First, we uncover a strong size effect on the electron-phonon coupling, which arises from reduced dielectric screening at the nanocrystal surfaces and prevails independent of the optical excitation mechanism (i.e., inter- and intraband). Second, we find that surface ligands act as a tuning parameter for hot carrier cooling. Particularly, gold nanocrystals with thiol-based ligands show significantly slower carrier cooling as compared to amine-based ligands under intraband optical excitation due to electronic coupling at the nanocrystal/ligand interfaces. Finally, we spatiotemporally resolve thermal transport and heat dissipation in photoexcited nanocrystal films by combining electron diffraction with stroboscopic elastic scattering microscopy. Taken together, we resolve the distinct thermal relaxation time scales ranging from 1 ps to 100 ns associated with the multiple interfaces through which heat flows at the nanoscale. Our findings provide insights into optimization of gold nanocrystals and their thin films for photocatalysis and thermoelectric applications.

Configuration-Modulated Hot Electron Dynamics of Gold Nanorod Assemblies

Comprehension and modulation of hot electron dynamics at an ultrafast time scale are crucial for exploring the hot electron-assisted energy transfer processes. Here, we report the hot electron dynamics of dispersed gold nanorods and their controlled assemblies measured by time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. Both assembly configurations are shown to accelerate the hot electron decay in comparison with dispersed nanorods. The hot electron dynamics exhibit different variations with aspect ratio in transverse and longitudinal polarizations. The hot electron lifetime and the spectral signature of the induced absorption modification are found to be highly sensitive to photon energy as well as assembly configuration and aspect ratios, showing different contributions of plasmon coupling and electron-surface scattering. This work not only improves the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of hot electron dynamics but also paves the way to optimize performance characteristics of hot carrier-assisted photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and all-optical high-rate photonic processing applications.

Making waves: Radiation damping in metallic nanostructures

Metal nanostructures display several types of resonances. In the visible and near-IR spectral regions, there are localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) that involve the coherent oscillation of the conduction electrons. Extended metal nanostructures, such as nanowires or nanoplates, also exhibit propagating surface plasmon polaritons (PSPPs), which are motions of the electrons at the surface of the structure that have a well-defined momentum. In addition, the vibrational normal modes of metal nanostructures give rise to low frequency resonances in the gigahertz to terahertz range. These different types of motions/resonances suffer energy losses from internal effects and from interactions with the environment. The goal of this perspective is to describe the part of the energy relaxation process due to the environment. Even though the plasmon resonances and acoustic vibrational modes arise from very different physics, it turns out that environmental damping is dominated by radiation of waves. The way the rates for radiation damping depend on the size of the nanostructure and the properties of the environment will be discussed for the different processes. For example, it is well known that for LSPRs, the rate of radiation damping increases with particle size. However, the radiation damping rate decreases with increasing dimensions for PSPPs and for the acoustic vibrational modes.

Anomalous phonon relaxation in Au333(SR)79 nanoparticles with nascent plasmons

Research on plasmons of gold nanoparticles has gained broad interest in nanoscience. However, ultrasmall sizes near the metal-to-nonmetal transition regime have not been explored until recently due to major synthetic difficulties. Herein, intriguing electron dynamics in this size regime is observed in atomically precise Au₃₃₃(SR)₇₉ nanoparticles. Femtosecond transient-absorption spectroscopy reveals an unprecedented relaxation process of 4-5 ps-a fast phonon-phonon relaxation process, together with electron-phonon coupling (∼1 ps) and normal phonon-phonon coupling (>100 ps) processes. Three types of -R capped Au₃₃₃(SR)₇₉ all exhibit two plasmon-bleaching signals independent of the -R group as well as solvent, indicating plasmon splitting and quantum effect in the ultrasmall core of Au₃₃₃(SR)₇₉ This work is expected to stimulate future work on the transition-size regime of nanometals and discovery of behavior of nascent plasmons.

Simultaneous Hot Electron and Hole Injection upon Excitation of Gold Surface Plasmon

We have successfully investigated the simultaneous injection of hot electrons and holes upon excitation of gold localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The studies were performed on all-solid-state plasmonic system composed of titanium dioxide (TiO₂)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) p-n junctions with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The study revealed that both charge carriers are transferred within 200 fs to the respective charge acceptors, exhibiting a free carrier transport behavior. We also confirmed that the transfer of charge carriers are accompanied by change in the initial relaxation dynamics of Au NPs.

Ultrafast Electron Dynamics in Single Aluminum Nanostructures

Aluminum nanostructures are a promising alternative material to noble metal nanostructures for several photonic and catalytic applications, but their ultrafast electron dynamics remain elusive. Here, we combine single-particle transient extinction spectroscopy and parameter-free first-principles calculations to investigate the non-equilibrium carrier dynamics in aluminum nanostructures. Unlike gold nanostructures, we find the sub-picosecond optical response of lithographically fabricated aluminum nanodisks to be more sensitive to the lattice temperature than the electron temperature. We assign the rise in the transient transmission to electron-phonon coupling with a pump-power-independent lifetime of 500 ± 100 fs and theoretically confirm this strong electron-phonon coupling behavior. We also measure electron-phonon lifetimes in chemically synthesized aluminum nanocrystals and find them to be even longer (1.0 ± 0.1 ps) than for the nanodisks. We also observe a rise and decay in the transient transmissions with amplitudes that scale with the surface-to-volume ratio of the aluminum nanodisks, implying a possible hot carrier trapping and detrapping at the native oxide shell-metal core interface.

Ultrafast electron-lattice thermalization in copper and other noble metal nanoparticles

Using time-resolved ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy we investigated the electron-lattice energy transfer in small copper nanospheres with diameters ranging from 3.2 to 23 nm, either embedded in a glass or dispersed in a solvent. Electron-lattice scattering rate is shown to increase with size reduction, in agreement with our previous results obtained on gold and silver nanoparticles in the low excitation regime. We attribute this effect to the reduction of the screening efficiency of electron-phonon interactions close to the nanoparticle surface. To understand the discrepancy between the results on the electron-lattice scattering in different metals reported in the literature (reduction, no dependence or increase with nanoparticle size), we discuss the experimental conditions required for the accurate determination of electron-lattice energy transfer time from time-resolved investigations in the weak and strong excitation regimes and present power-dependent experiments on gold nanospheres in solution. Our findings are derived from a theoretical analysis based on the two-temperature model predictions and on a complete modeling of the nanoparticle transient extinction cross-section through the resolution of Boltzmann equation in the presence of hot electrons.

Distinct Signatures of Electron-Phonon Coupling Observed in the Lattice Thermal Conductivity of NbSe3 Nanowires

The last two decades have seen tremendous progress in quantitative understanding of several major phonon scattering mechanisms (phonon-phonon, phonon-boundary, phonon-defects), as they are the determinant factors in lattice thermal transport, which is critical for the proper functioning of various electronic and energy conversion devices. However, the roles of another major scattering mechanism, electron-phonon (e-ph) interactions, remain elusive. This is largely due to the lack of solid experimental evidence for the effects of e-ph scattering in the lattice thermal conductivity for the material systems studied thus far. Here we show distinct signatures in the lattice thermal conductivity observed below the charge density wave transition temperatures in NbSe₃ nanowires, which cannot be recaptured without considering e-ph scattering. Our findings can serve as the cornerstone for quantitative understanding of the e-ph scattering effects on lattice thermal transport in many technologically important materials.

Ultrafast measurements of the dynamics of single nanostructures: a review

The ability to study single particles has revolutionized nanoscience. The advantage of single particle spectroscopy measurements compared to conventional ensemble studies is that they remove averaging effects from the different sizes and shapes that are present in the samples. In time-resolved experiments this is important for unraveling homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening effects in lifetime measurements. In this report, recent progress in the development of ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopic techniques for interrogating single nanostructures will be discussed. The techniques include far-field experiments that utilize high numerical aperture (NA) microscope objectives, near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) measurements, ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM), and time-resolved x-ray diffraction experiments. Examples will be given of the application of these techniques to studying energy relaxation processes in nanoparticles, and the motion of plasmons, excitons and/or charge carriers in different types of nanostructures.

Plasmon-induced hot electron transfer in AgNW@TiO2@AuNPs nanostructures

Compared to the limited absorption cross-section of conventional photoactive TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs), plasmonic metallic nanoparticles can efficiently convert photons from an extended spectrum range into energetic carriers because of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Using these metal oxide semiconductors as shells for plasmonic nanoparticles (PNPs) that absorb visible light could extend their applications. The photophysics of such systems is performed using transient absorption measurements and steady extinction simulations and shows that the plasmonic energy transfer from the AgNWs core to the TiO₂ shell results from a hot carrier injection process. Lifetimes obtained from photobleaching decay dynamics suggest that (i) the presence of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in AgNWs@TiO₂@AuNPs systems can further promote the hot carrier transfer process via plasmonic coupling effects and (ii) the carrier dynamics is greatly affected by the shell thickness of TiO₂. This result points out a definite direction to design appropriate nanostructures with tunable charge transfer processes toward photo-induced energy conversion applications.

Gold Nanoparticles as Absolute Nanothermometers

Nanothermometry is a challenging field that can open the door to intriguing questions ranging from biology and medicine to material sciences. Gold nanorods are excellent candidates to act as nanoprobes because they are reasonably bright emitters upon excitation with a monochromatic source. Gold nanoparticles are commonly used in photothermal therapy as efficient transducers of electromagnetic radiation into heat. In this work we use the spectrum of the anti-Stokes emission from gold nanorods irradiated in resonance to measure the absolute temperature of the nanoparticles and their surrounding medium without the need for a previous calibration. We show a 4 K accuracy in the determination of the temperature of the medium with spectral measurements of 180 s integration time. This procedure can be easily implemented in any microscope capable of acquiring emission spectra, and it is not limited to any specific shape of nanoparticles.

Thermal dynamics of pulsed-laser excited gold nanorods in suspension

Photothermal reactions of metallic nanostructures, such as gold nanorods show appealing structural relaxations, such as bubble formation or particle modification. We have employed a pump-probe method to record the structural relaxations of a suspension of gold nanorods upon femtosecond laser excitation by pulsed X-ray scattering both with wide-angle and small-angle sensitivity. Single-pulse reactions include transient bubble formation at 20 J m^-2 and irreversible nanorod reshaping at 30 J m^-2. Thus the window for reversible excitation is very narrow. Additionally we could map the time-domain and fluence behaviour in a wide range to characterize the relaxations comprehensively. The polarized laser pulse first selectively excites nanorods aligned with the laser electric field, but at higher fluence non-aligned rods are also transformed. At low fluence this transformation happens in the solid state, while at higher fluence the rods melt.

Quantum size effect on charges and phonons ultrafast dynamics in atomically controlled nanolayers of topological insulators Bi2Te3

Heralded as one of the key elements for next generation spintronics devices, topological insulators (TIs) are now step by step envisioned as nanodevices like charge-to-spin current conversion or as Dirac fermions based nanometer Schottky diode for example. However, reduced to few nanometers, TIs layers exhibit a profound modification of the electronic structure and the consequence of this quantum size effect on the fundamental carriers and phonons ultrafast dynamics has been poorly investigated so far. Here, thanks to a complete study of a set of high quality molecular beam epitaxy grown nanolayers, we report the existence of a critical thickness of around ~6 nm, below which a spectacular reduction of the carrier relaxation time by a factor of ten is found in comparison to bulk Bi2 Te3 In addition, we also evidence an A1g optical phonon mode softening together with the appearance of a thickness dependence of the photoinduced coherent acoustic phonons signals. This drastic evolution of the carriers and phonons dynamics might be due an important electron-phonon coupling evolution due to the quantum confinement. These properties have to be taken into account for future TIs-based spintronic devices.

Quantification of Efficient Plasmonic Hot-Electron Injection in Gold Nanoparticle-TiO2 Films

Excitation of localized surface plasmons in metal nanostructures generates hot electrons that can be transferred to an adjacent semiconductor, greatly enhancing the potential light-harvesting capabilities of photovoltaic and photocatalytic devices. Typically, the external quantum efficiency of these hot-electron devices is too low for practical applications (<1%), and the physics underlying this low yield remains unclear. Here, we use transient absorption spectroscopy to quantify the efficiency of the initial electron transfer in model systems composed of gold nanoparticles (NPs) fully embedded in TiO₂ or Al₂O₃ films. In independent experiments, we measure free carrier absorption and electron-phonon decay in the model systems and determine that the electron-injection efficiency from the Au NPs to the TiO₂ ranges from about 25% to 45%. While much higher than some previous estimates, the measured injection efficiency is within an upper-bound estimate based on a simple approximation for the Au hot-electron energy distribution. These results have important implications for understanding the achievable injection efficiencies of hot-electron plasmonic devices and show that the injection efficiency can be high for Au NPs fully embedded within a semiconductor with dimensions less than the Au electron mean free path.

Electron to Adsorbate Energy Transfer in Nanoparticles: Adsorption Site, Size, and Support Matter

Confinement of hot electrons in metal nanoparticles (NPs) is expected to lead to increased reactivity in heterogeneous catalysis. NP size as well as support may influence molecule-NP coupling. Here, we use ultrafast nonlinear vibrational spectroscopy to follow energy transfer from hot electrons generated in Pd NP/MgO/Ag(100) to chemisorbed CO. Photoexcitation and photodesorption occur on an ultrashort time scale and are selective according to adsorption site. When the MgO layer is thick enough, it becomes NP size-dependent. Hot electron confinement within NPs is unfavorable for photodesorption, presumably because its dominant effect is to increase relaxation to phonons. An avenue of research is open where NP size and support thickness, photon energy, and molecular electronic structure will be tuned to obtain either molecular stability or reactivity in response to photon excitation.

Optomechanics of Single Aluminum Nanodisks

Aluminum nanostructures support tunable surface plasmon resonances and have become an alternative to gold nanoparticles. Whereas gold is the most-studied plasmonic material, aluminum has the advantage of high earth abundance and hence low cost. In addition to understanding the size and shape tunability of the plasmon resonance, the fundamental relaxation processes in aluminum nanostructures after photoexcitation must be understood to take full advantage of applications such as photocatalysis and photodetection. In this work, we investigate the relaxation following ultrafast pulsed excitation and the launching of acoustic vibrations in individual aluminum nanodisks, using single-particle transient extinction spectroscopy. We find that the transient extinction signal can be assigned to a thermal relaxation of the photoexcited electrons and phonons. The ultrafast heating-induced launching of in-plane acoustic vibrations reveals moderate binding to the glass substrate and is affected by the native aluminum oxide layer. Finally, we compare the behavior of aluminum nanodisks to that of similarly prepared and sized gold nanodisks.

Linear and ultrafast nonlinear plasmonics of single nano-objects

Single-particle optical investigations have greatly improved our understanding of the fundamental properties of nano-objects, avoiding the spurious inhomogeneous effects that affect ensemble experiments. Correlation with high-resolution imaging techniques providing morphological information (e.g. electron microscopy) allows a quantitative interpretation of the optical measurements by means of analytical models and numerical simulations. In this topical review, we first briefly recall the principles underlying some of the most commonly used single-particle optical techniques: near-field, dark-field, spatial modulation and photothermal microscopies/spectroscopies. We then focus on the quantitative investigation of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of metallic nano-objects using linear and ultrafast optical techniques. While measured SPR positions and spectral areas are found in good agreement with predictions based on Maxwell's equations, SPR widths are strongly influenced by quantum confinement (or, from a classical standpoint, surface-induced electron scattering) and, for small nano-objects, cannot be reproduced using the dielectric functions of bulk materials. Linear measurements on single nano-objects (silver nanospheres and gold nanorods) allow a quantification of the size and geometry dependences of these effects in confined metals. Addressing the ultrafast response of an individual nano-object is also a powerful tool to elucidate the physical mechanisms at the origin of their optical nonlinearities, and their electronic, vibrational and thermal relaxation processes. Experimental investigations of the dynamical response of gold nanorods are shown to be quantitatively modeled in terms of modifications of the metal dielectric function enhanced by plasmonic effects. Ultrafast spectroscopy can also be exploited to unveil hidden physical properties of more complex nanosystems. In this context, two-color femtosecond pump-probe experiments performed on individual bimetallic heterodimers are discussed in the last part of the review, demonstrating the existence of Fano interferences in the optical absorption of a gold nanoparticle under the influence of a nearby silver one.

Electron and Phonon Dynamics in Hexagonal Pd Nanosheets and Ag/Pd/Ag Sandwich Nanoplates

Pd and its hybrid nanostructures have attracted considerable attention over the past decade, with both catalytic and plasmonic properties. The electron and phonon properties directly govern conversion efficiencies in applications such as energy collectors and photocatalysts. We report the dynamic processes of electron-phonon coupling and coherent acoustic phonon vibration in hexagonal Pd nanosheets and Ag/Pd/Ag sandwich nanoplates using transient absorption spectroscopy. The electron-phonon coupling constant of Pd nanosheets, G_Pd-nanosheet (8.7 × 10¹⁷ W/(m³·K)) is larger than that of the bulk G_Pd (5.0 × 10¹⁷ W/(m³·K)). The effective coupling constant G_eff of Ag/Pd/Ag nanoplates decreases with increasing Ag shell thickness, finally approaching the bulk G_Ag. The variation of G_eff is explained in terms of reduced density of states near Fermi level of Pd nanosheets with 1.8 nm ultrathin thickness. Coherent acoustic phonon vibration in Pd nanosheets is assigned to a fundamental breathing mode, similar to the vibration of benzene. The period increases with increasing Ag shell thickness. For Ag/Pd/Ag nanoplates with 20 nm thick Ag shells, the vibrational mode is ascribed to a quasi-extensional mode. The results show that the modes of the coherent acoustic phonon vibration transform with the geometric variation of Pd nanosheets and Ag/Pd/Ag nanoplates. Our results represent an understanding of quantum-confinement related electron dynamics and bulk-like phonon kinetics in the ultrathin Pd nanosheets and their hybrid nanostructures.

Vibrational density of states and thermodynamics at the nanoscale: the 3D-2D transition in gold nanostructures

Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is generally and widely used to enhance the vibrational fingerprint of molecules located at the vicinity of noble metal nanoparticles. In this work, SERS is originally used to enhance the own vibrational density of states (VDOS) of nude and isolated gold nanoparticles. This offers the opportunity of analyzing finite size effects on the lattice dynamics which remains unattainable with conventional techniques based on neutron or x-ray inelastic scattering. By reducing the size down to few nanometers, the role of surface atoms versus volume atoms become dominant, and the “text-book” 3D-2D transition on the dynamical behavior is experimentally emphasized. “Anomalies” that have been predicted by a large panel of simulations at the atomic scale, are really observed, like the enhancement of the VDOS at low frequencies or the occurrence of localized modes at frequencies beyond the cut-off in bulk. Consequences on the thermodynamic properties at the nanoscale, like the reduction of the Debye temperature or the excess of the specific heat, have been evaluated. Finally the high sensitivity of reminiscent bulk-like phonons on the arrangements at the atomic scale is used to access the morphology and internal disorder of the nanoparticles.

Fano Interference in the Optical Absorption of an Individual Gold-Silver Nanodimer

Fano resonances are central features in the responses of many systems including atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials. They arise as a consequence of interferences between two channels, most frequently associated with two system modes. In plasmonic materials, Fano interferences between optical modes have been shown, experimentally and theoretically, to induce narrow features in their scattering spectra. By investigating individual silver-gold heterodimers, we first experimentally demonstrate that Fano interference is also a key effect in the optical absorption of plasmonic nano-objects, in agreement with theoretical predictions. Conversely to previously investigated systems, the two interacting modes at the origin of absorptive Fano effect are mostly localized on either one or the other dimer component. Experimental results were obtained by selectively monitoring the optical absorption of one dimer component using a two-color nonlinear time-resolved technique. This also opens the way to full optical far-field noncontact investigations of charge or energy exchanges between nano-objects with a spatial resolution much smaller than the optical wavelength.
