Abstract
BACKGROUND Although cystic fibrosis (CF) is widely considered a lung disease, the prevalence of CF-specific gastrointestinal symptoms and diseases has continued to rise. Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) has not been well-studied among people with CF (PwCF) and may be a common cause of abdominal symptoms. In PwCF, impaired bicarbonate secretion and unbuffered gastric acid production have been attributed to the development of ulcers, although ulcers remain uncommon. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of PUD in PwCF and assess for possible contributing factors. METHODS This study utilized the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database. All patients 18 years or older with CF were identified from 2014 to 2019. Relevant patient characteristics and procedures were identified using ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes. Linear trend, bivariate analyses, and multiple regression analysis were performed. The outcomes of interest were peptic ulcer disease, pancreatic insufficiency, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis or NASH. All analyses accounted for complex sampling scheme of the NIS. RESULTS The total prevalence of PwCF in the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was 0.08 %, and the number was stable year to year from 2014 to 2019. Hispanic patients were more likely to be diagnosed with PUD than other white (aOR 1.802 [1.311,2.476]). Multiple regression analysis indicated that PUD in PwCF was strongly associated with a diagnosis of NASH (aOR 2.421[1.197, 4.898]). PUD patients were less likely to have pancreatic insufficiency compared to the non-PUD group (aOR 0.583 [0.455, 0.745]). CONCLUSION Although cystic fibrosis has been historically known as a disease of childhood, advancements in therapy have led to prolonged life expectancy and higher prevalence for cystic fibrosis-related digestive diseases. This study revealed a low prevalence of PUD in PwCF. Hispanics and those with NASH are more likely to develop peptic ulcers.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (HP), a common microanaerobic bacteria that lives in the human mouth and stomach, is reported to infect ≈50% of the global population. The current diagnostic methods for HP are either invasive, time-consuming, or harmful. Therefore, a noninvasive and label-free HP diagnostic method needs to be developed urgently. Herein, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is composited with different metal-based materials to construct a graphene-based electronic nose (e-nose), which exhibits excellent sensitivity and cross-reactive response to several gases in exhaled breath (EB). Principal component analysis (PCA) shows that four typical types of gases in EB can be well discriminated. Additionally, the potential of the e-nose in label-free detection of HP infection is demonstrated through the measurement and analysis of EB samples. Furthermore, a prototype of an e-nose device is designed and constructed for automatic EB detection and HP diagnosis. The accuracy of the prototype machine integrated with the graphene-based e-nose can reach 92% and 91% in the training and validation sets, respectively. These results demonstrate that the highly sensitive graphene-based e-nose has great potential for the label-free diagnosis of HP and may become a novel tool for non-invasive disease screening and diagnosis.

Abstract
Due to the emergence and spread of multidrug resistance in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), its eradication has become difficult. Sodium sulfite (SS), a widely used food additive for ensuring food safety and storage, has been recognized as an effective nonbactericidal agent for H. pylori eradication. However, the mechanism by which H. pylori adapts and eventually succumbs under low- or no-oxygen conditions remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the anti-H. pylori effect of SS and investigated the multiomics mechanism by which SS kills H. pylori. The results demonstrated that SS effectively eradicated H. pylori both in vitro and in vivo. H. pylori responds to the oxygen changes regulated by SS, downregulates the HcpE gene, which is responsible for redox homeostasis in bacteria, decreases the activities of enzymes related to oxidative stress, and disrupts the outer membrane structure, increasing susceptibility to oxidative stress. Furthermore, SS downregulates the content of cytochrome C in the microaerobic respiratory chain, leading to a sharp decrease in ATP synthesis. Consequently, the accumulation of triglycerides (TGs) in bacteria due to oxidative stress supports anaerobic respiration, meeting their energy requirements. The multifaceted death of H. pylori caused by SS does not result in drug resistance. Thus, screening of the redox homeostasis of HcpE as a new target for H. pylori infection treatment could lead to the development of a novel approach for H. pylori eradication therapy.

Abstract
The association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and coronary heart disease (CHD) remains controversial, with an unclear causal link. This study employed bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) method, using H. pylori infection as the exposure, to investigate its causal relationship with CHD diagnosis, prognosis, and potential pathogenesis. H. pylori infection exhibited a causal association with body mass index (BMI) (β = 0.022; 95% CI 0.008-0.036; p = 0.001). Conversely, there was no discernible connection between H. pylori infection and the diagnosis of CHD (OR = 0.991; 95% CI 0.904-1.078; p = 0.842; IEU database; OR = 1.049; 95% CI 0.980-1.118; p = 0.178; FinnGen database) or CHD prognosis (OR = 0.999; 95% CI 0.997-1.001; p = 0.391; IEU database; OR = 1.022; 95% CI 0.922-1.123; p = 0.663; FinnGen database). Reverse MR analysis showed no causal effect of CHD on H. pylori infection. Our findings further support that H. pylori infection exerts a causal effect on CHD incidence, mediated by BMI. Consequently, eradicating or preventing H. pylori infection may provide an indirect clinical benefit for patients with CHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exhaled condensates contain inflammatory biomarkers; however, their roles in the clinical field have been under-investigated. METHODS We prospectively enrolled subjects admitted to pulmonology clinics. We collected exhaled breath condensates (EBC) and analysed the levels of six and 12 biomarkers using conventional and multiplex enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. RESULTS Among the 123 subjects, healthy controls constituted the largest group (81 participants; 65.9%), followed by the preserved ratio impaired spirometry group (21 patients; 17.1%) and the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) group (21 patients; 17.1%). In COPD patients, platelet derived growth factor-AA exhibited strong positive correlations with COPD assessment test (ρ=0.5926, p=0.0423) and COPD-specific version of St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ-C) score (total, ρ=0.6725, p=0.0166; activity, ρ=0.7176, p=0.0086; and impacts, ρ=0.6151, p=0.0333). Granzyme B showed strong positive correlations with SGRQ-C score (symptoms, ρ=0.6078, p=0.0360; and impacts, ρ=0.6007, p=0.0389). Interleukin 6 exhibited a strong positive correlation with SGRQ-C score (activity, ρ=0.4671, p=0.0378). The absolute serum eosinophil and basophil counts showed positive correlations with pro-collagen I alpha 1 (ρ=0.6735, p=0.0164 and ρ=0.6295, p=0.0283, respectively). In healthy subjects, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1)/forced vital capacity demonstrated significant correlation with CC chemokine ligand 3 (CCL3)/macrophage inflammatory protein 1 alpha (ρ=0.3897 and p=0.0068). FEV1 exhibited significant correlation with CCL11/eotaxin (ρ=0.4445 and p=0.0017). CONCLUSION Inflammatory biomarkers in EBC might be useful to predict quality of life concerning respiratory symptoms and serologic markers. Further studies are needed.

Abstract
To investigate the epidemiological connection between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori). 6,478 retired and active workers, aged 22-69 years, were included in the study. Their baseline measures of height, weight, waist measurement, body mass index, blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, plasma lipid, liver function index, glycosylated hemoglobin, abdominal ultrasonography, and findings from the line “13 C urea breath test” H. pylori test were analyzed, and follow-up with consistent baseline methods and criteria was performed annually. Over a 4-year period, the prevalence of NAFLD increased by 16.9%, with 612 (18.7%) of those who tested positive for H. pylori developing NAFLD, whereas 484 (15.1%) of those who did not test positive for H. pylori were later diagnosed with new NAFLD ( χ2 = 14.862, P < 0.05). One of the risk factors identified in the univariable Cox regression model for NAFLD was H. pylori (Hazard Ratio = 1.297; 95.0% confidence interval (CI) 1.150,1.485, P < 0.000); however, H. pylori continued to be an independent factor affecting the risk of NAFLD even after accounting for gender, age, and aspects of the metabolic syndrome (Hazard Ratio = 1.240; 95.0% CI 1.077,1.429, P = 0.003). The growth of NAFLD may be correlated with H. pylori infection.

Abstract
Background Recent studies have shown that CagA is considered highly pathogenic to helicobacter pylori (HP) in Western populations. However, in East Asia, CagA positive HP can be up to 90%, but not all patients will lead to gastric cancer. Our research group has found that HP thioredoxin1 (Trx1) may be a marker of high pathogenicity. Here, we investigate whether HP Trx1 exerts high pathogenicity and its internal molecular mechanism. Materials and Methods We constructed the coculture system of high-Trx1 HP and low-Trx1 HP strains with gastric epithelial cell lines separately and detected the influence of HP strains. The cells were stained by AM/PI, and the cell's mortality was assessed by fluorescence microscope. The cell's supernatants or precipitates were collected to detect the expression of IL6. In addition, the cell's precipitates were collected, and the expression of p-STAT3 was detected by western blot. Furthermore, the cell's supernatants were collected for detecting the expression of 8-OHDG to investigate the extent of DNA damage. Results The high-Trx1 HP can cause higher mortality of GES-1 cells compared with the low-Trx1 HP group (high-Trx1 HP (4.53 ± 0.56) %, low-Trx1 HP (0.39 ± 0.10) %, P < 0.001). The mRNA and protein level of IL-6 in AGS and GES-1 cells were increased during HP infection, and the expression of IL-6 in the High-Trx1 HP group was much higher than the low-Trx1 HP group. Besides, the expression of p-STAT3 was higher in the HP-positive gastric mucosa. And the expression of p-STAT3 in the high-Trx1 HP group was significantly upregulated compared with the low-Trx1 HP group. Furthermore, the expression of 8-OHDG in the high-Trx1 group was much higher than the low-Trx1 group (high-Trx1 HP (5.47 ± 1.73) ng/ml, low-Trx1 HP (2.89 ± 1.72) ng/ml, P < 0.05). Conclusion HP Trx1 may play as a marker of high pathogenicity, and the high-Trx1 HP could mediate the pathogenic process of HP infection via the IL6/STAT3 pathway.

Abstract
Background Although patients with psoriasis have an increased risk of cancers, little is known about the risk of psoriasis in cancer patients. Objective We aimed to comparatively analyze the incidence and risk factors of psoriasis in gastric cancer patients who underwent gastrectomy and in the general population. Methods A nationwide retrospective cohort of 52,608 gastric cancer survivors (2007~2015) was compared to 123,438 matched controls from the general population to estimate the incidence and hazard ratio (HR) of new-onset psoriasis. We also calculated the HRs for psoriasis according to adjuvant cancer treatment, obesity, and vitamin B12 supplementation in gastric cancer survivors. Results During a mean follow-up of 6.85 years, 645 of the 52,608 gastric cancer patients developed psoriasis, while 1,806 in the 123,438 matched control group developed psoriasis. Gastric cancer patients had a decreased risk of psoriasis (HR, 0.86; 95% confidence interval, 0.79~0.94), especially those who underwent subtotal gastrectomy. We found that vitamin B12 supplementation for more than 3 years had an additive effect on decreasing the risk of psoriasis in gastric cancer patients who underwent subtotal gastrectomy. Total gastrectomy, radio/chemotherapy, and obesity did not affect the risk of psoriasis in gastric cancer survivors. Conclusion The incidence of psoriasis is slightly lower in gastric cancer survivors than in the general population. Our results suggest that the development of psoriasis may be reduced by removing the source of systemic inflammation caused by Helicobacter pylori infection through subtotal gastrectomy in gastric cancer survivors.

Abnormal transaminase and lipid profiles in coexisting diseases in patients with fatty liver: a population study in Sichuan. Biosci Rep 2021; 41:230168. Abstract
Among chronic liver diseases, fatty liver has the highest incidence worldwide. Coexistence of fatty liver and other chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection, is common in clinical practice. The present study was conducted to analyze the prevalence and association of coexisting diseases in patients with fatty liver and to investigate how coexisting diseases contribute to abnormal transaminase and lipid profiles. We enrolled participants who were diagnosed with fatty liver via ultrasound in the physical examination center of West China Hospital. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the adjusted odds ratios (ORs). We found that 23.6% of patients who underwent physical examinations were diagnosed with fatty liver. These patients had higher risks of metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and hypertension and a lower risk of HBV infection. The risks of Hp infection and hyperthyroidism did not statistically differ. When fatty liver coexisted with T2DM, MetS and thyroid dysfunction, it conferred a higher risk of elevated transaminase. Fatty liver was positively correlated with triglycerides, cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and negatively correlated with HBV; thus, HBV had a neutralizing effect on lipid metabolism when coexisting with fatty liver. In conclusion, patients with fatty liver that coexists with T2DM, MetS and thyroid dysfunction are more prone to elevated transaminase levels. Patients with both fatty liver and HBV may experience a neutralizing effect on their lipid metabolism. Thus, lipid alterations should be monitored in these patients during antiviral treatment for HBV.

Abstract
Objective: It is currently unclear whether the Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection leads to associated alterations in thyroid functions and thyroidal illnesses. This study aims to analyse this relationship in an elderly male cohort over a five-year period. Design: A case retrospective study. Methods: A longitudinal study was designed to collect subjects (≥65 years old) receiving both a thyroid examination and H. pylori infection status determined by 13C-urea breath test in 2013 at our unit. Subjects were followed every 1 to 2 years until December 2017 for laboratory results, visits to outpatient clinics/emergency departments etc. Blood tests and thyroid ultrasonography were performed to determine thyroid function and morphology. Results: 356 male subjects with mean age 78.5 ± 9.8 years were included. Active H. pylori infection was positive in 88 subjects (24.7%). Thyroid function tests and ultrasonography showed similar patterns between H. pylori positive and negative groups. Non-thyroidal-illness syndrome (NTIS) was diagnosed in 30/210 (14%) patients who experienced acute illnesses and hospitalization over five-year follow-up. Notably, NTIS demonstrated significantly higher prevalence in the H. pylori positive group compared to the negative group (17.1 vs. 5.6%, P = 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that when age, APACHE II score and hemoglobin levels were adjusted, H. pylori status still has significant interrelationship with NTIS (OR = 3.497, P = 0.003). Conclusions: There is a positive association between chronic active H. pylori infection and NTIS prevalence in this elderly male cohort. Further studies are needed to elucidate the role of H. pylori infection on NTIS in elderly male patients.

Abstract
Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic multifactorial pathology and a current and essential challenge for public health, with a negative impact on the geriatric patient's quality of life. The pathophysiology is not fully known; therefore, no specific treatment has been found to date. The increase in the number of newly diagnosed cases of KOA is worrying, and it is essential to reduce the risk factors and detect those with a protective role in this context. The destructive effects of free radicals consist of the acceleration of chondrosenescence and apoptosis. Among other risk factors, the influence of redox imbalance on the homeostasis of the osteoarticular system is highlighted. The evolution of KOA can be correlated with oxidative stress markers or antioxidant status. These factors reveal the importance of maintaining a redox balance for the joints and the whole body's health, emphasizing the importance of an individualized therapeutic approach based on antioxidant effects. This paper aims to present an updated picture of the implications of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in KOA from pathophysiological and biochemical perspectives, focusing on antioxidant systems that could establish the premises for appropriate treatment to restore the redox balance and improve the condition of patients with KOA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been shown in many observational studies, but these conclusions remain controversial. Hence, we performed a meta-analysis to elucidate the association. METHODS A comprehensive search was conducted on relevant studies published from inception to December 31, 2018, in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were pooled by random-effect model, generic inverse variance method. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were also done. Publication bias was estimated by the funnel plot, Begg's test, and Egger's test. RESULTS Fifteen studies (eleven cross-sectional, two case-control, and two cohort studies) were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled OR of NAFLD in patients with H. pylori infection was 1.19 (95% CI: 1.11-1.29, P < 0.00001) when compared with the patients without H. pylori infection. Similar results were observed when the subgroup analyses were stratified by different geographical locations, study designs, and confounders adjustment. In subgroup analysis stratified by different H. pylori testing methods, the correlation still exists when using UBT, serology, RUT, or SAT, but there was no statistically significant difference when using multiple detection methods (OR = 2.96, 95% CI: 0.37-23.94, P = 0.31). Sensitivity analyses showed that our results were robust. No evidence of substantial publication bias was detected. CONCLUSIONS Current evidence indicated that a positive association between H. pylori infection and the risk of NAFLD. Further prospective studies are warranted to strengthen the association and to clarify whether there is a causative link between them.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The relationship between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a matter of debate. We achieved this prospective work to study whether H. pylori infection is a risk factor for NAFLD. METHODS A cohort multicenter pilot study of 369 adults without NAFLD at baseline was followed up for 2 years. Serum leptin, insulin, tumor necrosis factor-α, adiponectin, and interleukin-6 were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and leptin/adiponectin ratio (LAR) were calculated. Fecal H. pylori antigen was measured by ELISA. A total of 127 participants with H. pylori positive were treated and then followed up for 3 months. RESULTS Helicobacter pylori-positive patients (46.3%) were associated with an increase in IR, proinflammatory cytokines, C-reactive protein (CRP), LAR, NAFLD-liver fat score (NAFLD-LFS), and hepatic steatosis index (HSI) (all P < 0.01). Multivariate analysis of NAFLD according to HSI and NAFLD-LFS reported that presence of H. pylori, LAR, CRP, IL-6, smoking, and age (all P < 0.01) were independent risk factors for the presence of NAFLD. Multiple models adjusted for potential mediators or confounders such as metabolic, inflammatory, and biochemical factors were constructed. After therapy of H. pylori infection, there was a significant reduction in lipogenic profile, IR, leptin, LAR, CRP, proinflammatory cytokines, HSI, and NAFLD-LFS, as well as, increasing HDL. CONCLUSION Helicobacter pylori infection was related to an increased risk of NAFLD development, through increased markers of IR, inflammatory mediators, and lipid metabolism. Moreover, its eradication can recover these NAFLD risk factors.

Abstract
In contrast to bronchial and nasal lavages, the analysis of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is a promising, simple, non-invasive, repeatable, and diagnostic method for studying the composition of airway lining fluid with the potential to assess lung inflammation, exacerbations, and disease severity, and to monitor the effectiveness of treatment regimens. Recent investigations have revealed the potential applications of EBC analysis in systemic diseases. In this review, we highlight the analytical studies conducted on non-volatile compounds/biomarkers in EBC. In contrast to other related articles, this review is classified on the basis of analytical techniques and includes almost all the applied methods and their methodological limitations for quantification of non-volatile compounds in EBC samples, providing a guideline for further researches. The studies were identified by searching the SCOPUS database with the keywords "biomarkers," "non-volatile compounds," "determination method," and "EBC."

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is present in roughly 50% of the human population worldwide and infection levels reach over 70% in developing countries. The infection has classically been associated with different gastro-intestinal diseases, but also with extra gastric diseases. Despite such associations, the bacterium frequently persists in the human host without inducing disease, and it has been suggested that H. pylori may also play a beneficial role in health. To understand how H. pylori can produce such diverse effects in the human host, several studies have focused on understanding the local and systemic effects triggered by this bacterium. One of the main mechanisms by which H. pylori is thought to damage the host is by inducing local and systemic inflammation. However, more recently, studies are beginning to focus on the effects of H. pylori and its metabolism on the gastric and intestinal microbiome. The objective of this review is to discuss how H. pylori has co-evolved with humans, how H. pylori presence is associated with positive and negative effects in human health and how inflammation and/or changes in the microbiome are associated with the observed outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the associations between carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and early-stage diabetic kidney disease (DKD) coupled with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS A cross-sectional study including 180 type 2 diabetic participants was conducted to explore the associations between CIMT and early-stage DKD coupled with H. pylori infection, and a stepwise multivariate regression analysis evaluated the correlations of CIMT with clinical and serologic parameters. RESULTS The type 2 diabetic patients with early-stage DKD coupled with H. pylori infections had the highest CIMT values. Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), urine albumin/creatinine ratio (UACR), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were independent predictors of CIMT. CONCLUSIONS Early-stage DKD coupled with H. pylori infection may synergistically lead to significant CIMT thickening in type 2 diabetic patients. Additionally, ApoB, UACR, and IL-6 levels were important independent risk factors for increased CIMT.

Abstract
Since the beginning of the 1990's diverse types of metabolites originating from polyunsaturated fatty acids, formed under autooxidative conditions were discovered. Known as prostaglandin isomers (or isoprostanoids) originating from arachidonic acid, neuroprostanes from docosahexaenoic acid, and phytoprostanes from α-linolenic acid proved to be prevalent in biology. The syntheses of these compounds by organic chemists and the development of sophisticated mass spectrometry methods has boosted our understanding of the isoprostanoid biology. In recent years, it has become accepted that these molecules not only serve as markers of oxidative damage but also exhibit a wide range of bioactivities. In addition, isoprostanoids have emerged as indicators of oxidative stress in humans and their environment. This review explores in detail the isoprostanoid chemistry and biology that has been achieved in the past three decades.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is the result of the imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants. Biomarkers of oxidative stress are relevant in the evaluation of the disease status and of the health-enhancing effects of antioxidants. We aim to discuss the major methodological bias of methods used for the evaluation of oxidative stress in humans. There is a lack of consensus concerning the validation, standardization, and reproducibility of methods for the measurement of the following: (1) ROS in leukocytes and platelets by flow cytometry, (2) markers based on ROS-induced modifications of lipids, DNA, and proteins, (3) enzymatic players of redox status, and (4) total antioxidant capacity of human body fluids. It has been suggested that the bias of each method could be overcome by using indexes of oxidative stress that include more than one marker. However, the choice of the markers considered in the global index should be dictated by the aim of the study and its design, as well as by the clinical relevance in the selected subjects. In conclusion, the clinical significance of biomarkers of oxidative stress in humans must come from a critical analysis of the markers that should give an overall index of redox status in particular conditions.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) which colonizes the stomach can cause a wide array of gastric disorders, including chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer. Recently, accumulating evidence has implicated H. pylori infection in extragastrointestinal diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, and metabolic diseases. At the same time, many scholars have noted the relationship between H. pylori infection and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Despite the positive association between H. pylori and NAFLD reported in some researches, there are opposite perspectives denying their relationship. Due to high prevalence, unclear etiology and difficult treatment of NAFLD, confirming the pathogenicity of H. pylori infection in NAFLD will undoubtedly provide insights for novel treatment strategies for NAFLD. This paper will review the relationship between H. pylori infection and NAFLD and the possible pathogenic mechanisms.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the associations and differences in influencing factors between alcoholic liver disease (ALD) coupled with Helicobacter pylori infection and atherosclerosis and to determine whether there is a "double hit phenomenon" in atherosclerosis patients with ALD and H. pylori infections. Included cases (n = 160) were categorized into 4 groups: 41 cases of ALD coupled with H. pylori infections (group A), 35 cases of H. pylori infections without ALD (group B), 37 cases of ALD without H. pylori infections (group C), and 47 normal control cases (group D). CIMT was significantly greater in group A than in groups B and D (P = 0.005 and P = 0.001, respectively). The GLM univariate analysis found that CIMT was significantly greater in group A than in groups B, C and D (P = 0.018, P = 0.001 and P = 0.009, respectively). We found that BMI and ALT, AST and ApoB levels were independent predictors of CIMT (P = 0.000, P = 0.000, P = 0.012 and P = 0.014, respectively). ALD coupled with H. pylori infection may result in significant CIMT thickening, but H. pylori infection without ALD and ALD without H. pylori infection does not, suggesting that a "double hit phenomenon" occurs. Additionally, BMI, and ALT, AST and ApoB levels were independent risk factors for increased CIMT.
