Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and incisal relationships related to sleep bruxism and parafunctional habits among children. METHODS The study consisted of 106 children (53 with and 53 without bruxism) between the ages of 7 and 10. A general questionnaire and Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders Axis I examination form were used for each child. RESULTS There were significant differences between children according to pain, headache, midline deviation, opening pattern, temporomandibular joint noise, overjet, overbite, corrected deviation, and pain disorders (p < 0.05). According to the logistic regression, the higher scores of "mouth breathing" and "horizontal incisal overjet" were independent risk factors for TMDs. The lack of "bruxism" and "sleeping with open mouth" were protective factors for TMDs. CONCLUSION Children with bruxism showed signs and symptoms of TMDs and divergence in incisal relationships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stress in patients with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) has been found to be associated with orofacial pain, psychological distress, jaw dysfunction and loss of daily activities in a cross-sectional study. The aim of this study was to investigate the relations between stress and change of stress over time versus changes in orofacial pain, psychosocial factors and jaw function over a two-year period in patients with JIA. METHODS This is a two-year prospective follow-up study involving 40 JIA patients. At baseline (2015) the median age was 12 years and at two-year follow up (2018) 14 years. The JIA patients were examined clinically and with questionnaires at baseline and follow-up with the diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (DC/TMD) and completed the same set of DC/TMD questionnaires regarding orofacial pain symptoms and psychosocial factors. RESULTS Change in stress was associated with change in catastrophizing, psychological distress as well as limitation in general function and jaw function. CONCLUSIONS This study emphasizes the importance of maintaining a low stress level in patients with JIA since an increase in stress level over a two-year period seems to impair jaw function as well as psychological distress and catastrophizing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present review aimed to investigate the association between salivary biomarkers and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). TMD is a multifactorial condition characterised by pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and surrounding structures. Salivary biomarkers have emerged as potential diagnostic tools due to their non-invasiveness and easy accessibility. However, the literature on salivary biomarkers in relation to TMD is limited and inconsistent. METHODS Electronic databases of Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, PsychINFO, CINAHL and Medline were searched using specific search terms and Boolean operators. The search was limited to articles published in English that assessed salivary biomarkers in individuals diagnosed with TMD. Two reviewers independently screened the articles and extracted data. ROB-2 was used to assess the risk of bias. RESULTS Eleven clinical papers met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The findings provided consistent evidence of a clear association between salivary biomarkers and TMD. Various biomarkers, including cortisol, IL-1, glutamate and several others, were assessed. Some studies reported higher levels of cortisol and IL-1 in TMD patients, indicating potential involvement in stress and inflammation. Glutamate levels were found to be elevated, suggesting a role in pain modulation. Other biomarkers also showed alterations in TMD patients compared to controls: CONCLUSION: The findings from the included studies suggest that salivary biomarkers may play a role in TMD pathophysiology. Though a definitive conclusion can be drawn regarding the specific salivary biomarkers and their association with TMD, the results must be interpreted with caution considering the heterogeneity of the biomarkers assessed. Further research with larger sample sizes, standardised methodology and rigorous study designs is needed to elucidate the role of salivary biomarkers in TMD.

Abstract
Background Studies have reported correlations between various oral behaviors and painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD), yet comprehensive research on the independent effects of each oral behavior within the general population remains sparse. Objective This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between painful TMD (PT) and various oral behaviors in general population. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted with participants to collect data encompassing demographic characteristics, eight specific oral behaviors, and the 5 major TMD symptoms(5Ts) checklist. Participants were categorized into PT and non-PT (NPT) groups based on their responses to the 5Ts checklist. Those reporting TMJ/facial pain or headaches were assigned to the PT group, while all other participants constituted the NPT group. Both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to evaluate the association between individual oral behavior and the presence of PT, controlling for demographic confounders including age, sex, systemic diseases, and dental treatments history. Results A total of 441 valid questionnaires were received, including 156 males and 285 females. The prevalence of PT was identified to be 33.33%, with 61.00% of participants engaging in one or more types of oral behaviors. Each oral behavior was more frequently reported in the PT group compared to the NPT group. The univariate logistic regression analysis identified positive correlations between all eight oral behaviors and PT. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, these associations persisted after adjustment for demographic confounders including age, sex, history of systemic diseases and dental treatments (P<0.01). The behaviors most strongly associated with PT were "Hold or jut jaw forward/to the side" (OR:4.478), "Hold, tighten or tense muscles without clench" (OR:3.343) and "Hold jaw in rigid or tense position" (OR:3.209). Conclusion The presence of oral behaviors has significant association with PT. Individuals exhibiting multiple oral behaviors are more likely to experience PT. Additional studies are needed to clarify the effects of reducing oral behaviors on pain-related symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the prevalence of oral habits, bruxism, and Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) injuvenileswithautisticspectrumdisorder(ASD). METHODS Data included 165 juveniles diagnosed with ASD, allocated to younger group aged 6 21 (n=86) and older group aged 13-21 (n=79). RESULTS Sleep bruxism was reported by 26.7% in the younger group and by 5% in the older group. Awake bruxism was reported by 22% and 17.7%, respectively. Oral habits were reported by 43% of all participants, with similar rate in both groups. TMD related p ain was low in both groups (6.3% and 7% respectively). The influence of the COVID 19 pandemic on oral parafunction was moderate in the younger group (17.4%) and mild in the older group (8.6%), influence on bruxism was mild in both groups (5.8% and 2.5%, respectively). CONCLUSION The prevalence of bruxism and oral parafunctions was similar to the reported in the literature for the general population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bruxism patients often access the web to search for information. Unfortunately, the low text readability of online material and the limited medical literacy in the general population may prevent patients' understanding of health information. OBJECTIVE(S) We aimed to assess the home page's readability of the top 10 patients-oriented bruxism-related websites and the educational level required to approach them. METHODS Using the word bruxism in the "no country redirect" extension of Google Chrome browser (www.google.com/ncr), we identified the first 10 patient-oriented English language websites. The readability of the material was determined using six commonly recommended readability tests (1): Gunning Fog Index (GFI), Coleman Liau Index (CLI), Automated Readability Index (ARI) Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG), Flesch Kincald Grade Level (FKGL), Flesh Reasing Ease (FRE). RESULTS The USA National Institutes of Health requirements, which call for websites to be readable at a 6th to 7th-grade level, were not followed by any of the most popular websites. CONCLUSION The average consumer frequently finds the health information on the Internet to be too complex to understand, which can lead to misinterpretation, a delay in diagnosis, and poorer health consequences.

Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a common condition affecting the musculoskeletal group evoking clinical signs such as pain, restricted mouth opening, and disability in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), masticatory musculature, and the osseous structures in the surroundings. Saliva is a strong proponent of a diagnostic and prognostic tool for TMDs. Hence, a systematic review was undertaken to answer the research question "What is the role of salivary biomarkers in the identification of TMD?" A thorough literature search was performed in databases of PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar till February 2022. Every included study was characterized by Study ID, location, sample size, demographic information, biomarker analysis, assessment method, and results. Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to assess the methodological quality of all qualifying research. A total of eight articles were included for the review after screening the titles, abstracts, and full-text articles. The review included articles of observational design with a control group. TMD disorders were confirmed both clinically and radiographically in the study of Shoukri et al. TMDs are commonly prevalent in maxillofacial conditions. Despite the availability of various diagnostic techniques, certain limitations are remarkable. The researchers are yet to ascertain a gold standard biomarker to identify TMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most studies support parafunctions play an important role in temporomandibular disorders (TMD), whereas the association between tooth wear and TMD remains controversial. Betel nut chewing as a parafunction is popular in South and Southeast Asia. We therefore investigated the association of severely worn dentition resulting from betel nut chewing with TMD. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis of 408 control participants (male: 380, female: 28, 43.62 ± 9.54 years) and 408 participants with betel nut chewing related severely worn dentition (male: 380, female: 28, 43.73 ± 8.93 years) who received dental and TMD checkup according to Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) in Health Management Center, Xiangya Hospital was performed. Betel nut chewing related severely worn dentition meant all the natural teeth had moderate to severe tooth wear [Tooth Wear Index (TWI) ≥ 2)] including ≥ 2 severe wear teeth (TWI ≥ 3) due to betel nut chewing. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used. RESULTS After adjusting for age, gender, betel nut chewing related severely worn dentition, oral submucosal fibrosis, number of missing teeth, number of dental quadrants with missing teeth, visible third molar and orthodontic history, variables of age, gender and betel nut chewing related severely worn dentition were significant for overall TMD. Multivariable analysis showed betel nut chewing related severely worn dentition was significantly associated with intra-articular TMD [odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals: 1.689 (1.271-2.244), P = 0.001] in a betel nut chewing dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION Betel nut chewing related severely worn dentition was associated with intra-articular TMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in children and adolescents is not well-known. This is partly because TMD is not often diagnosed in children and partly because there is no agreed-upon definition of TMD. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that there are gender differences in the prevalence and presentation of TMD in adult. The aim was to assess the prevalence of TMDs in subjects aged 8-19 evaluated with Diagnostic Criteria for TMDs (DC/TMD) and to assess gender differences. METHODS PubMed, Web of Science and Lilacs were systematically searched until 30 November 2022, to identify studies presenting children and adolescents patients affected by TMDs. RESULTS Out of 40 papers, three studies were included. The included subjects in this review were 1914 (1093 female and 821 male). Seven hundred and thirty-six on 1914 patients (38.4%) presented TMD. Among 1093 female, 489 (44.7%) presented TMD, while 247/821 male (30%) experienced TMD. Meta-analysis revealed that the female had a higher TMD prevalence than male (RR 2.10; 95% CI: 1.21-3.65). CONCLUSION TMD prevalence in children and adolescence varies between 20% and 60%. Female had a higher prevalence of TMDs compared to male.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the masseter muscle thickness (MMT) of patients with probable sleep/awake bruxism and controls without bruxism in mixed dentition as measured with ultrasonography (USG), and to calculate the correlation of MMT with body mass index (BMI). STUDY DESIGN The diagnosis of probable bruxism was established based on the parents' reports of the children's behavior, habits, and discomfort, and the presence of clinical signs and symptoms such as attrition-type wear on the teeth and the presence of discomfort, fatigue, and/or pain in the jaw muscles on palpation during clinical examination. The bruxist study group and the control group each included 28 children. MMT was measured separately in relaxed and contracted positions in both groups using USG. The height and weight of the patients were recorded in order to calculate BMI. Statistical analysis was performed with significance established at P < .05. RESULTS MMT was found to be significantly larger in the study patients than in controls on the right and left sides in the relaxed and contracted positions (P < .001). No statistically significant correlation was found between MMT and BMI (P ≥ .134). CONCLUSIONS MMT as measured with USG can be a beneficial approach in diagnosing bruxism in children. The lack of correlation between MMT and BMI indicates that BMI would not be helpful in diagnosing bruxism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) are used worldwide in adults. Until now, no adaptation for use in children has been proposed. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to present comprehensive and short-form adaptations of Axis I and Axis II of the DC/TMD for adults that are appropriate for use with children in clinical and research settings. METHODS Global Delphi studies with experts in TMDs and in pain psychology identified ways of adapting the DC/TMD for children. RESULTS The proposed adaptation is suitable for children aged 6-9 years. Proposed changes in Axis I include (i) adapting the language of the Demographics and the Symptom Questionnaires to be developmentally appropriate for children, (ii) adding a general health questionnaire for children and one for their parents, (iii) replacing the TMD Pain Screener with the 3Q/TMD questionnaire and (iv) modifying the clinical examination protocol. Proposed changes in Axis II include (i) for the Graded Chronic Pain Scale, to be developmentally appropriate for children, (ii) adding anxiety and depression assessments that have been validated in children and (iii) adding three constructs (stress, catastrophising and sleep disorders) to assess psychosocial functioning in children. CONCLUSION The recommended DC/TMD, including Axis I and Axis II, for children aged 6-9 years, is appropriate for use in clinical and research settings. This adapted the first version for children includes changes in Axis I and Axis II changes requiring reliability and validity testing in international settings. Official translations to different languages according to INfORM requirements will enable a worldwide dissemination and implementation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study will be to evaluate the effect of intravascular irradiation of blood (ILIB) combined with myofunctional exercises for sleep bruxism in pediatrics. METHODS This study will be a randomized controlled clinical trial. A triage of individuals between 4 and 17 years old with a diagnosis of sleep bruxism will be carried out at the clinic of the Catholic University of Uruguay, and in a private office referred by different private care centers. The selected participants will be evaluated before and after treatment by means of questionnaires on bruxism, sleep quality and nocturnal oxygen saturation measurement. For this, 46 patients with sleep bruxism will be recruited, who will be divided into 2 groups: control group (CG), which will undergo an application of placebo ILIB and an orofacial myofunctional therapy (MFT) exercise protocol; and na ILIB group, which will carry out an active application of ILIB and an exercise protocol, this being once a week for 8 weeks. The laser treatment (808 nm) will be performed twice a week for 8 weeks. The values will be tested for normality by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. For the comparison between the groups, t test will be carried out, considering a level of significance of 0.5% (P < .05). DISCUSSION Although local photobiomodulation (PBM), acupuncture PBM and physiotherapy have been studied in the treatment of bruxism, this is the first study to evaluate the effect of ILIB combined with myofunctional exercises for sleep bruxism in pediatrics.

Abstract
Pediatric chronic orofacial pain (OFP) is an umbrella term which refers to pain associated with the hard and soft tissues of the head, face, and neck lasting >3 months in patients younger than 18 years of age. Common chronic pediatric OFP diagnoses include temporomandibular disorder, headaches, and neuropathic pain. Chronic OFP can adversely affect youth's daily functioning and development in many areas of well-being, and may be associated with emotional stress, depression, functional avoidance, and poor sleep, among other negative outcomes. In this mini-review, we will discuss common psychological comorbidities and familial factors that often accompany chronic pediatric OFP conditions. We will also discuss traditional management approaches for pediatric orofacial pain including education, occlusal appliances, and psychological treatments such as relaxation, mindfulness-based interventions, and cognitive-behavioral treatments. Finally, we highlight avenues for future research, as a better understanding of chronic OFP comorbidities in childhood has the potential to prevent long-term pain-related disability in adulthood.

Abstract
Aim The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of botulinum toxin administration in patients who consulted the otolaryngology clinic with secondary otalgia caused by bruxism. Introduction Botulinum toxin can be applied to the hypertrophic muscles in patients who suffer from facial asymmetry even though they do not experience pain. Injection intervals and the condition of the muscles should be monitored as botulinum toxin applications to the muscles may result in decreased muscle strength and chewing difficulties. Methods This prospective study was conducted with bruxism patients at Private Kesan Hospital otorhinolaryngology outpatient clinic between August 2019 and December 2019. The diagnosis was based on the anamnesis and physical examination of the patient. The Visual Analogue Scale was used to evaluate patients' pain levels throughout the treatment. Results A total of 37 patients, between 19 and 51 years old, 22 (59.46%) females and 15 (40.54%) males, who consulted to the otolaryngology clinic in Private Kesan Hospital between August 2019 and December 2019 with a diagnosis of otalgia caused by bruxism were included in the study. Nine patients (24.3%) had facial asymmetry due to masseter muscle hypertrophy. The average age of the participants was 34.00 ± 9.13 years old. Two weeks after the application of botulinum toxin, patients' complaints subsided. In patients with facial asymmetry, it was observed that asymmetry decreased after the 2nd month and noticeably improved after the 4th month. Discussion Bruxism should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with ear pain. Botulinum toxin can be applied in patients who do not respond adequately to classical treatments such as medical treatments, chewing training, neck and facial muscle relaxation techniques, psychological support, and dental splint applications.

Abstract
Objectives: Parafunctional habits, as one of the etiological factors of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), are an individual’s response to increased stress. During stress and depression, biomarkers such as cortisol and salivary alpha-amylase (SAA) are secreted in the saliva. The present study aimed to investigate whether there is a correlation between salivary stress biomarkers and parafunctional habits. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two cases, from May to September 2015, were selected based on two standard stress questionnaires, namely the depression anxiety stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Saliva samples were collected to examine the level of unstimulated salivary cortisol and SAA. The significance of the results was assessed via student’s t-test and Mann-Whitney test (α=0.05). Results: The mean concentrations of cortisol and SAA in unstimulated saliva were significantly higher in the case group than in the control group (P=0.01 and 0.44, respectively). The mean scores of anxiety, stress, and depression were significantly higher in the case group than in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: It seems that the levels of salivary cortisol and SAA, as well as stress, anxiety, and depression scores, are higher in patients with parafunctional habits.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION It is well proven that psychoemotional factors play causative role in development of many civilization diseases. Psychosocial stress is effecting with development of certain oral parafunctions like teeth grinding, bruxism, or cheeks biting. Eventually, all of those parafunctional activities may cause increase of masticatory muscles tone and provoke its intensification. Literature indicates that students must cope with greater level of stressful situations than the average representative of the society. METHODS The research group comprised Ist-year physiotherapy and dentistry students from University School of Physical Education in Wroclaw and Wroclaw Medical University. The study consisted the following: psychological and health questionnaires, and stomatological examination with masseter muscles' electromyography. RESULTS In intraoral examination, symptoms of parafunctions were more frequently observed in physiotherapy students. The mean tone of masseters was higher also among physiotherapy students. The level of perceived stress was high in both groups, and the experienced borderline and incorrect results in Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were more frequently observed in dentistry students. The mean tone of masseter muscle was rising with the level of anxiety in physiotherapy group. Among dentistry, the tendency for rise of masseter muscle tone together with level of anxiety and depression was observed. CONCLUSIONS Physiotherapy and dentistry beginners differ between each other's by prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and oral parafunction symptoms. The level of perceived stress is high in both groups. The level of experienced anxiety and depression is higher in dentistry group. In both study groups, there is significant growth and tendency for simultaneous rise of masseter muscle tone accordingly to stress, anxiety, and depression indicators.

Abstract
Background Oral parafunctional habits are related to any abnormal hyperactivity of the oromandibular system. They are prevalent in all societies in varying intensity and have potential physical and psychological implications. The aim of this study was twofold: (1) to determine the prevalence of various types of oral parafunctional habits in the Saudi adult population, and (2) to examine their association with and the level of anxiety and personality factors. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted with an electronic data collection form distributed to the public through social media. The questionnaire comprised of the following: (a) demographic information, (b) the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), (c) the Ten-Item of Big-Five Personality Traits, (d) a list of oral parafunctional habits. Data were analysed using a Pearson’s Chi square and binary logistic regression. Results The participants reported several parafunctional habits including daily gum chewing (86%), lip/object biting (59%), clenching (45%), nail biting (36%) and grinding (32%). Males were 3 [2.3–3.7] times and younger age groups were 1.5 [1.1–2.0] times more likely to be associated with nail biting compared to their counter groups (adj.P < 0.001 and adj.P = 0.007). Lip/object biting was significantly 1.3 [1.1–1.7] times more prevalent in males (adj.P = 0.015). Participants who reported being extroverts were more likely to be associated with clenching (46.4%) (P = 0.024). An emotionally stable person was significantly less likely to be associated with nail biting (28.4%), grinding (24.9%), clenching (35.8%), and lip/object biting (48.4%) (P < 0.001each). Participants who reported conscientiousness and emotional stability were significantly less associated with TMD (P = 0.007, P < 0.001). Conclusion Oral parafunctional habits are highly prevalent in the Saudi adult population in varying degrees. Possible risk factors include males, younger age groups, single people, and being financially constrained.

Abstract
Background Chronic nail biting is common in children and young adults. Auto inoculation of environmental pathogens can manifest as infection in distant organs. Multi-drug resistance gram negative bacteria are on the rise globally. Several of the foodborne bacteria fall within the Enterobacteriaceae family but very few studies have explored these microbes in the oral cavity of children with chronic nail-biting habit or orthodontic treatment. The study aims to investigate oral load of Enterobacteriaceae in children with chronic nail-biting habit and or those undergoing orthodontic treatment. Material and Methods 150 children (no nail-biting n=30, nail biting n=60, fixed orthodontic treatment n =30 and a combination of fixed orthodontic appliance use and nail-biting habit n =30) were assessed for culture based microbiological investigation. The concentrated oral rinse technique was used. The rinse was inoculated in MacConkey’s and Blood Agar. The gram stained culture was subjected to biochemical tests for sub-species identification using Biomerieux Vitek 2 Compact Automated Microbiological Analyzer. Fisher’s exact and Kruskal Wallis with post hoc analysis using Dunn method was performed to test association and difference between groups. Results Enterobacteriaceae was positive for 72% of the children. Of them, nail biting or orthodontic treatment group comprised 89%. Those with a combination of nail biting and undergoing orthodontic treatment exhibited highest CFU/ml and those without nail biting or orthodontic treatment exhibited the lowest. Three of the four organisms isolated tested positive in the orthodontic treatment group. E. coli was positive in 38% of the children while Klebsiella and E. cloacae were isolated exclusively in the orthodontic treatment group. Conclusions Chronic nail biting or the use of fixed orthodontic appliances is associated with higher incidence of Enterobacteriaceae in the oral cavity. Oral health professionals play an important role in preventing multi drug resistance infectious diseases. Key words:Enterobacteriaceae, nail-biting, Onychophagia, orthodontic treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bruxism in children and its relation to the development of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) has not been clearly determined yet. AIM The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the possible association between bruxism and TMD in children. DESIGN Seven databases were searched, and 497 articles were assessed. Methodological quality was assessed through Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The meta-analysis was performed with the articles in which extraction of data was possible and the summary effect measure through odds ratio (OR) and respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) was used to assess the certainty of evidence. RESULTS Ten cross-sectional studies were included in the systematic review. Of these, 8 showed a statistically significant association between bruxism and TMD. Seven studies however presented a high risk of bias. The meta-analysis was performed with 3 articles and obtained an OR of 2.97 (95% CI ranging from 1.72-5.15), indicating that children with bruxism are 2.97 times more likely to present TMD, with very low level of certainty defined by GRADE. CONCLUSIONS Although the studies showed high risk of bias, the qualitative analysis of individual studies showed that the children with bruxism have greater chance of developing TMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bruxism is a repetitive masticatory muscle activity with a multifactorial etiology , that can be associated to emotional factors. AIM The aim of the study is to identify the presence of oral habits (OHs) and their association with the trait of anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children [STAI-C]) in pediatric patients with possible sleep bruxism (PSB). METHODS Children between 3 and 12 years of age with PSB reported by their parents with complete deciduous or mixed dentition were included in the present study. Sociodemographic data (SD) as well as those on OHs such as only natural (ON), artificial breastfeeding (OA) or both (NA), finger sucking (FS), pacifier use (PC), and biting nails (BN) or objects (OB) were obtained through an interview with the parents/guardians answered the Brazilian version of the STAI-C questionnaire. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED SD and OH as well as STAI-C findings were descriptively evaluated, while the associations between OH and STAI-C with PSB were evaluated using the Chi-square test (P < 0.05). RESULTS The final sample was 52 children (6.62 ± 1.8 years). Of these, 51.9% were males, 82.7% reported not living in social risk areas, and 21.2% were only children. Considering the OH, patients participated in ON (26.9%), OA (9.6%), and both (63.5%); 13.5% had an FS habit and 46.2% had related PC use; and 80.8% were reported to have OB biting behaviors, while 53.8% participated in BN. The STAI-C was present in 25 (48.1%) patients with PSB and was not associated with the presence of OH. CONCLUSION There is no association between STAI-C and OH in pediatric patients with PSB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of malocclusion, temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and oral parafunctions is highly debated in children population. OBJECTIVES To investigate the prevalence of malocclusion, self-reported oral parafunctions and TMD-pain in Italian schoolchildren and to assess the association between the examined factors. METHODS A total of 700 children aged 9-11 years were selected among six public schools in Campania region (Italy). Molar relationship, overjet, overbite and cross-bite were assessed through a clinical examination. Furthermore, the subjects were demanded to fill in a validated questionnaire for TMD-pain screening and the short form of the Oral Behaviours Checklist. Descriptive statistics were used to report the frequencies. The associations between occlusal traits, oral parafunctions and TMD-pain were analysed with a Pearson chi-square test, as expressed by odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals. The significance level was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS Molar Class I was the most frequently encountered molar relationship, followed by molar Class II, subdivision and molar Class III. Increased overjet was more common than negative overjet. Posterior cross-bite was observed in 12% of children. TMD-pain was recorded in 14.7% of subjects. High frequency of oral parafunctions was reported in 21.3% of subjects. A significant association was found between TMD-pain and negative overbite. Cross-bite and high frequency of oral parafunctions were associated with TMD-pain. CONCLUSION The current results show that malocclusion, self-reported oral parafunctions and TMD-pain are frequent findings among Italian schoolchildren and that some occlusal factors and high frequency of oral parafunctions might be associated with TMD-pain.

Abstract
Introduction: Sleep and awake bruxism are potential risk factors for oral hard tissue damage, failure of dental restorations and/or temporomandibular disorders. Identifying the determinants of sleep and awake bruxism among adolescents will enable development of preventive interventions for those at risk. Objectives: To determine emotional, behavioral and physiological associations of sleep and awake bruxism among Israeli adolescents. Methods: Two thousand nine hundred ninety-three Israeli high school students, from five different high schools in Israel, were approached in the classroom and requested to complete online questionnaires on sleep and awake bruxism, emotional aspects, smoking, alcohol consumption, oral habits, facial pain, and masticatory disturbances. The final study sample concerning awake and sleep bruxism included 2,347 participants. Results: 1,019 (43.4%) participants reported not experiencing any form of bruxism (neither sleep nor awake), 809 (34.5%) reported awake bruxism, 348 (14.8%) reported sleep bruxism and 171 (7.3%) reported both sleep and awake bruxism. Multivariate analyses (Generalized Linear Model with a binary logistic dependent variable) showed that one of the prominent variables affecting the occurrence of sleep bruxism was anxiety (mild, moderate and severe anxiety, Odds Ratios (OR) of 1.38, 2.08, and 2.35, respectively). Other variables associated with sleep bruxism were stress (each point in the stress scale increased the risk of SB by 3.2%), temporomandibular symptoms (OR = 2.17) and chewing difficulties (OR = 2.35). Neck pain showed a negative association (OR = 0.086). Multivariate analyses for awake bruxism showed an effect of moderate anxiety (OR = 1.6). Other variables associated with awake bruxism were stress (each point in stress scale increased the risk of AB by 3.3%), high and low levels of facial pain (OR = 2.94 and 1.53, respectively), creaks (OR = 1.85) and oral habits (OR = 1.36). Sleep bruxism was found to be a predictor for awake bruxism, and vice versa. In both cases ORs were 8.14. Conclusions: Among adolescents, sleep and awake bruxism are associated with emotional aspects as well as with facial pain symptoms and/or masticatory system disturbances. Awareness is recommended to decrease potential risks to teeth, dental restorations, and the masticatory system.

Abstract
Bruxism is a parafunctional activity that can seriously affect quality of life. Although bruxism induces many problems in the oral and maxillofacial area, whether it contributes to the onset of malocclusion remains unclear. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to investigate the association between the onset of malocclusion and awareness of clenching during the daytime in young adults. Among 1,092 Okayama University students who underwent normal occlusion at baseline, we analysed 238 who had undergone a dental examination and had complete data after 3 years (2013–2016). We also performed subgroup analysis to focus on the association between awake bruxism and the onset of crowding (n = 216). Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using multivariate logistic regression analyses. The incidences of malocclusion and crowding were 53.8% and 44.5%, respectively. In multivariate logistic regression, awareness of clenching was a risk factor for crowding (OR: 3.63; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08–12.17). Moreover, underweight (body mass index < 18.5 kg/m2) was related to the onset of malocclusion (OR: 2.34; 95%CI: 1.11–4.92) and crowding (OR: 2.52, 95%CI: 1.25–5.76). These results suggest that awareness of clenching during the daytime and underweight are risk factors for the onset of crowding in young adults.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this cross-sectional epidemiologic study was to estimate the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and oral parafunctions in Italian adolescents and to assess the associations between age, gender, oral habits, and TMD. Methods: Three hundred sixty-one adolescents, aged 14-18 years, were examined for TMDs according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. Furthermore, oral habits were explored by means of a written questionnaire. Results: Almost one-third of the sample (27.4%) showed at least one TMD diagnosis, with myofascial pain being the most prevalent. Gum chewing was the most prevalent oral habit. The female gender and oral habits were significantly associated with TMD. Conclusion: TMD in adolescents, although lower than in adults, are significantly prevalent. General practitioners should include TMD screening methods in their routine dental examinations of adolescent patients. Adolescents should be instructed on how to avoid incorrect oral behaviors that might predispose them to the onset of TMD.

Abstract
Objectives Hormonal changes during menopause alter a woman's susceptibility to some disorders. Information regarding the prevalence of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in menopausal women is limited in the literature. In this study, the prevalence and severity of TMDs were compared between menopausal and non-menopausal women. Materials and Methods The study included 140 women (69 premenopausal and 71 postmenopausal) 45 to 55 years of age that were examined in Shiraz Dental School, Shiraz in Iran. The Helkimo clinical dysfunction index (Di) was used to evaluate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. The data were analyzed using chi-square and Fisher's exact tests. Results Occurrence of TMD was significantly higher in menopausal than non-menopausal women (P<0.001). All the TMD criteria based on Helkimo Di except range of mandibular movement were significantly more common in menopausal women. The range of mandibular movement was not significantly different between menopausal and non-menopausal women (P=0.178). Conclusion The results from this study show that TMD can be considered more common and severe in menopausal than non-menopausal women. This finding indicates that, similar to other conditions in menopausal women such as arthritis and osteoporosis, TMD should be taken into consideration by dental and medical professionals.

After a thorough review of the history and presentation of a child's facial pain, a targeted head and neck examination is critical to the appropriate diagnosis of facial pain and temporomandibular joint disorders. It is critical to distinguish between the structural (trauma, degenerative disease, and tumor) and nonstructural (neurogenic, myogenic, and psychological) causes of pain, which will allow for incorporation of appropriate strategies of medical, psychological, dental, and surgical therapies.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) signs and symptoms, its correlation with gender, parafunctional habits, emotional stress, anxiety, and depression and its impact on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQL) in college preparatory students at public and private institutions in João Pessoa, Paraíba (PB). The sample consisted of 303 students. Presence of TMD symptoms was determined by an anamnesis questionnaire containing questions related to the presence of parafunctional habits and emotional stress. A simplified clinical evaluation protocol was used. Anxiety and depression were determined with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale and the OHRQL using the short version contained in the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). The Chi-square, Fisher Exact, Mann Whitney, and Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed. Presence of signs and symptoms of TMD was statistically associated (p ≤ 0,05) with female gender, parafunctional habits, emotional stress, and anxiety, and represented greater impairment of the OHRQL. The physical pain domain was the most affected. The increased prevalence of signs and symptoms of TMD among college preparatory students indicates that there is a need for education and clarification among teachers and students to improve early diagnosis and to prevent the problem.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is an umbrella term for a number of conditions in the area of the joint, temple, and masticatory system. Many of those with TMD also suffer from headaches and anxiety. The aims and objectives of this study were to determine if there exists an association between the Diagnostic Criteria of TMD (DC/TMD) symptom questionnaire and report of headaches as well as stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was implemented via the use of the DC/TMD symptom questionnaire and the perceived stress scale (PSS). This was distributed conveniently among dental students in a multi-dental school setting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and was completed by 152 dental students. Odds ratios, Chi-square, and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals are reported. Statistical significance was set at P ≤ 0.05. RESULTS Those who ticked yes for pain on the TMD pain screener for pain with chewing hard or tough food, pain on mouth opening and lateral excursion, and pain with jaw habits as parafunction were at an odds risk from twice to thrice as likely to experience headaches. Similarly, those with poor coping skills on the PSS were more likely to have headaches (P = 0.002). Likewise, positive answers on the screener and symptom questionnaire were relevant with higher stress scores on the PSS. CONCLUSION This study clarifies and reiterates the intertwined power of both stress and headaches; the former being a role player in TMD progression and the latter its product. TMD is unfortunately on the rise; it should not be brushed off as a nuisance. A multidisciplinary approach in diagnosis and treatment of both TMD and headaches by a team of orofacial pain specialist, neurologist, psychiatrist and/or psychologist, and physical therapists to untangle the deceiving presentation of both conditions would not only provide a more favorable prognosis but also improve cost and time expenditures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases could experience mouth and teeth disorders and alterations in psychological mood. Vice versa, the psychological status may influence the presence of oral diseases. AIM To evaluate in inflammatory bowel disease patients the prevalence of sleep bruxism and its correlation with the presence of oral diseases, quality of sleep, and psychological disturbances. METHODS Patients were consecutively recruited in our clinic and examined for temporomandibular disorders, dental enamel disorders, sleep bruxism, and recurrent aphthous stomatitis by two dentists. Patients also underwent Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Beck Depression Inventory Scale questionnaires. RESULTS 47 patients and 46 controls were included. Sleep bruxism and enamel wear disorders were more frequent in Crohn's disease patients when compared with ulcerative colitis patients and controls (p = 0.03 and p = 0.02, resp.). Among groups, no differences were noted for enamel hypoplasia, temporomandibular disorders, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, depression, and quality of sleep. We found a positive correlation between bruxism and temporomandibular disorders (Spearman 0.6, p < 0.001) and between bruxism and pathological sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index > 5) (Spearman 0.3, p < 0.005). CONCLUSION Bruxism and enamel wear disorders should be routinely searched in Crohn's disease patients. Moreover, the attention of healthcare givers to sleep disturbances should be addressed to all inflammatory bowel disease patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of both bruxism and attention deficit hyperactivity (ADHD) has increased in recent years. AIM This study evaluated the direct and indirect effects of signs of ADHD, reported by parents/caregivers and teachers, with sleep bruxism. In addition, this study explores the effects of socio-economic status (SES) on sleep bruxism. DESIGN This cross-sectional study was performed in Diamantina, Brazil, with 851 randomly selected schoolchildren aged 6-12 years. The schoolchildren were underwent an oral examination for the evaluation of bruxism. Moreover, parents/caregivers fill out a form for the assessment of sleep bruxism and sociodemographic factors. Parents/caregivers and teachers responded to the Swanson, Nolan and Pelham scale - version IV (SNAP-IV) for the assessment of ADHD signs. The structural equation modelling approach was used, and standardized coefficients to direct, indirect and total effects were calculated. RESULTS ADHD signs had a significant moderate (SC = -0.19, P < 0.01) effect on sleep bruxism. SES had a significant indirect effect on bruxism via sucking habits. Moreover, SES had a significant direct (SC = -0.16, P = 0.01) and total effect on tooth wear (SC = -0.17, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION This study concluded that signs of ADHD and SES have a complex direct and indirect effects on sleep bruxism among schoolchildren.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to assess quality of life in relation to oral health in schoolchildren with sleep bruxism. It is a transversal observational study of 594 schoolchildren (aged 11-14) of the municipality of Teresina, in the Brazilian State of Piauí. Quality of life was assessed through the Brazilian version of the CPQ11-14 questionnaire, in the short form (ISF:16).The presence of sleep bruxism was assessed from reports by the people legally responsible for the children. The results were analyzed by: calculation of an Odds Ratio (OR) estimate of chances; descriptive analysis; a Pearson Chi-squared test; a Likelihood Ratio test; and multiple logistic regression. A statistically significant association was found between sleep bruxism and the total score on the CPQ11-14 (p < 0.001), and with the scores in two domains: functional limitation (p = 0.033);and social wellbeing (p= 0.020).No association was found between quality of life and the variables gender or age. The final regression model showed that the presence of sleep bruxism increases the chance of having a greater effect on quality of life (ORadj=1.82 (1.54 - 2.10), IC = 95%).It is concluded that sleep bruxism had a negative impact on the quality of life of the schoolchildren, principally in the two domains functional limitations and changes in social wellbeing.

Abstract
Background Studies have indicated that the prevalence of symptoms and signs of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are rare early in childhood, but become more prevalent in adolescents and adulthood. To our knowledge, no study has investigated the prevalence of TMD-diagnoses in children in the general population. The aim was thus to investigate the prevalence of TMD-diagnoses among children and adolescents in the general population using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD). Methods The current cross-sectional study consisted of 456 children and adolescents, aged between 10 and 18, randomly enrolled from 10 boy’s- and 10 girl’s- schools in Jeddah. The participants first answered two validated questions about TMD-pain, followed by a clinical examination according to RDC/TMD. Results One hundred twenty-four participants (27.2 %) were diagnosed with at least one TMD-diagnosis. Myofascial pain was the most common diagnosis (15 %) followed by disc displacement with reduction, arthralgia, myofascial pain with limited mouth opening and osteoarthrosis. Children diagnosed with myofascial pain more often reported orofacial pain, headache and tooth clenching (p < 0.05), whereas children with arthralgia more often reported orofacial pain and tooth grinding than those without a TMD-diagnosis (p < 0.05). Only 18 % of the subjects in the TMD group had sought a dentist or physician for their pain. Conclusion TMD was common among children and adolescents in Saudi Arabia. Self-reported orofacial pain and headache as well as bruxism were associated with a TMD-pain diagnosis and disc displacement. A surprisingly low percentage of children and adolescents sought treatment by a dentist or physician for their pains.

Abstract
[Purpose] Bruxism is a repetitive muscle activity involving the clenching or grinding of
one’s teeth during sleep or waking hours. Melissa officinalis L. may be
employed as a natural therapy due to the sedative, anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, and
anti-spasm properties of the chemical constituents of the essential oil obtained from its
leaves. The aim of the present study was to evaluate electromyographic signals in the
temporal muscle using the BiteStrip® test on children with sleep bruxism before
and after therapy with Melissa officinalis L. [Subjects and Methods] The
subjects were randomly allocated to two groups. Group 1 (n = 12) ingested a tincture
containing Melissa officinalis L. for 30 days. Group 2 (n = 12) received
a placebo solution with the same dose and frequency as Group 1. The Wilcoxon and
Mann-Whitney tests were employed for statistical analysis. [Results] The sample was made
up of 24 children aged 6 to 10 years. No statistically significant differences were found
between initial and final muscle activity in either group or in an intergroup comparison.
[Conclusion] Use of the Melissa officinalis L. tincture at the dose
employed did not lead to a reduction in muscle activity in children with bruxism.

Abstract
Little is known about the epidemiological characteristics of sleep and awake bruxism (SB and AB) in adolescents. The aims of the study were: to assess the prevalence rates of self-reported SB and AB in Israeli adolescents; to determine the associations between SB/AB and several demographical, exogenous and psychosocial factors in Israeli adolescents; and to investigate the possible concordance between SB and AB. The study made use of a questionnaire. The study population included 1000 students from different high schools in the centre of Israel. Prevalence of self-reported SB and AB in the Israeli adolescents studied was 9·2% and 19·2%, respectively. No gender difference was found regarding the prevalence of SB and AB. Multiple variable regression analysis revealed that the following predicting variables were related to SB: temporomandibular joint sounds (P = 0·002) and feeling stressed (P = 0·001). The following predicting variables were related to AB: age (P = 0·018), temporomandibular joint sounds (P = 0·002), oro-facial pain (P = 0·006), and feeling stressed (P = 0·002) or sad (P = 0·006). A significant association was found between SB and AB; that is, an individual reporting SB had a higher probability of reporting AB compared with an individual who did not report SB (odds ratio = 5·099). Chewing gum was the most common parafunction reported by adolescents. The results of this study demonstrate that self-reports of AB and SB are common in the Israeli adolescents population studied and are not related to gender. The significant correlation found between SB and AB may be a confounding bias that affects proper diagnosis of bruxism through self-reported questionnaires only.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study was designed to evaluate the effect of sleep bruxism, awake bruxism and parafunctional habits, both separately and cumulatively, on the likelihood of adolescents to present painful TMD. The study was conducted on a sample of 1,094 adolescents (aged 12-14). The presence of painful TMD was assessed using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders, Axis I. Data on sleep bruxism, awake bruxism and parafunctional habits (nail/pen/pencil/lip/cheek biting, resting one's head on one's hand, and gum chewing) were researched by self-report. After adjusting for potential demographic confounders using logistic regression, each of the predictor variables (sleep bruxism, awake bruxism and parafunctional habits) was significantly associated with painful TMD. In addition, the odds for painful TMD were higher in the concomitant presence of two (OR=4.6, [95%CI=2.06, 10.37]) or three predictor (OR=13.7, [95%CI=5.72, 32.96]) variables. These findings indicate that the presence of concomitant muscle activities during sleep and awake bruxism and parafunctional habits increases the likelihood almost linearly of adolescents to present painful TMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The authors' objectives were to determine the percentage of children in kindergarten through grade 5 who reported symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD); to assess whether sex, race, and socioeconomic background mattered; and to explore the relationships between TMJD and children's oral health and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). METHODS The research team conducted face-to-face interviews with 8,302 children in kindergarten through grade 5 (51% female, 49% male; 53% African American, 42% white). They conducted oral health screenings with 7,439 children. RESULTS Overall, 23.6% of the children reported pain when chewing tough food, and 18.8% reported pain when opening their mouth wide; 23.2% reported hearing a sound (clicking) when opening their mouth wide. Female students were more likely than male students and African American children were more likely than white children to report TMJD symptoms. The prevalence of TMJD symptoms did not correlate with whether the children had a need for oral health care services or whether they had an abscess or carious teeth with pulpal involvement. TMJD symptoms were associated significantly with children's OHRQoL. CONCLUSIONS Considerable percentages of 4- to 12-year-old children reported TMJD symptoms, with girls and African American children being more likely than their counterparts to be affected. Experiencing TMJD symptoms was associated significantly with poorer OHRQoL. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Dental practitioners need to be aware that substantial percentages of kindergarten and elementary school-aged children experience TMJD symptoms. Taking a dental history and conducting an oral examination, therefore, should include assessments of the signs and symptoms of TMJD; treatment recommendations should be provided for affected children.

Abstract
PURPOSE This article will review the etiology, risk factors, history, and physical assessment of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs). In particular, this article discusses the role of the pediatric provider in diagnosing and beginning the initial treatment of TMDs, as well as the appropriate treatment plans. It also reveals some of the controversies regarding etiology and treatment of TMDs, as well as the paucity of research specific to TMDs in pediatrics. DATA SOURCES A computerized search in PubMed and Ovid Medline, from 2006 to 2012, was conducted. A few seminal articles were included that were published before 2006. Hand searching was also performed, which included a few articles between 2012 and 2015. CONCLUSIONS Although TMDs are mostly found in adults, it is also a finding in pediatrics, which increases in prevalence during adolescence. More research specific to pediatric patients with TMDs needs to be conducted so that pediatric-specific care can be provided. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE TMD is a condition found in the pediatric population, and it is important for providers to take an adequate history and physical examination that incorporates the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and muscles of mastication. It is also critical that providers begin initial education and management, followed by appropriate referrals.

Abstract
CONTEXT Temporomandibular disorder (TDM) is defined as a heterogenous group of psychophysiological disorders commonly characterised by orofacial pain, chewing dysfunction or both. Various Epidemiological studies had shown occurrence of TMD in all age groups including children. Also research had shown that non nutritional oral habits to be associated with TMD. AIM Present study aimed to find whether harmful oral habits are associated with sign and symptoms of TMD among adolescents in Greater Noida. SETTING AND DESIGN Schools in Gautam Buddha district and descriptive study. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cross sectional study was carried out among 240 adolescents (10 - 19 years) studying in schools of Greater Noida. Study population were selected by random sampling to whom screening questionnaires recommended by American Academy of Orofacial Pain (AAOP) were distributed. Patient history and clinical examination was used to determine harmful oral habits. Data analysis was done in SPSS version 21 and Chi-square test was applied. RESULTS Sixty one participants (25.4%) displayed no sign and symptoms of TMD, 34 (14.2%) responded affirmatively to atleast one item on the questionnaire and 108(46%) gave at least three affirmative responses. Headache, Neckpain and Toothache were most frequent reported sign and symptoms of TMD (46.2%). There was statistically significant association between gender and sign and symptoms of TMD on three items of the questionnaire (p < 0.05). Nail Biting (45.8%), Biting Lips/objects (37%) were most common habits among the study group. There was statistically significant association between Nail Biting (p = 0.001), Lip Biting/ object biting (p=0.001), Grinding of teeth (p = 0.01) and sign and symptoms of TMD. CONCLUSION A statistically significant association was found between nail biting, lip/ object biting and grinding of teeth with signs and/or symptoms of TMD. Thus there is need for preventive dental treatment and community dental education so that young adults realize importance of early diagnosis and treatment of TMJ disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Bruxism can result in temporomandibular disorders, oral pain, and tooth wear. However, it is unclear whether bruxism affects malocclusion. The aim of this study was to examine the association between self-reported bruxism and malocclusion in university students. METHODS Students (n = 1503; 896 men and 607 women) aged 18 and 19 years were examined. Malocclusion was defined using a modified version of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need. The presence of buccal mucosa ridging, tooth wear, dental impression on the tongue, palatal/mandibular torus, and the number of teeth present were recorded, as well as body mass index (BMI). Additional information regarding gender, awareness of bruxism, orthodontic treatment, and oral habits was collected via questionnaire. RESULTS The proportion of students with malocclusion was 32% (n = 481). The awareness of clenching in males with malocclusion was significantly higher than in those with normal occlusion (chi square test, P < 0.01). According to logistic regression analysis, the probability of malocclusion was significantly associated with awareness of clenching (odds ratio [OR] 2.19; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.22-3.93) and underweight (BMI <18.5 kg/m(2)) (OR 1.89; 95% CI, 1.31-2.71) in males but not in females. In subgroup analyses, the probability of crowding was also significantly associated with awareness of clenching and underweight (P < 0.01) in males. CONCLUSIONS Awareness of clenching and underweight were related to malocclusion (crowding) in university male students.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To review the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in children and
adolescents, verifying the methodological variations. DATA SOURCES: Research conducted in Medline, PubMed, Lilacs and BBO databases, including
manuscripts (except reviews and case reports) published from 1990 to 2012. The
descriptors were "temporomandibular joint syndrome", "temporomandibular joint
dysfunction syndrome", "temporomandibular joint disorders", "prevalence studies",
and "cross-sectional studies"; the words "dysfunction", "disorder",
"temporomandibular", "children", "adolescents", "prevalence", "frequency", and
"transversal" were used. DATA SYNTHESIS: Seventeen articles were selected, and the TMD frequency varied from 16 to 68%.
Regarding the methodological criteria, only three articles (18%) reported sample
size determination, three (18%) clearly described the sample selection process by
stratified selection technique, and nine studies (53%) carried out the calibration
of the examiners. The diagnostic criteria used in the studies were: Helkimo index
(n=2; 12%), Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD)
(n=4; 24%), the jaw index (n=1; 6%), clinical protocols (n=10; 59%), and
anamnestic questionnaires (n=6; 35%). CONCLUSIONS: The TMD prevalence in children and adolescents varies in the literature.
Appropriate and standardized methods are needed to identify, with greater
validity, the presence of TMD in this population, allowing a better understanding
of the pathological aspects in order to address more effective preventive and
therapeutic procedures.

Abstract
OBJETIVO: avaliar se há relação entre bruxismo e presença de ruídos articulares em crianças. MÉTODOS: participaram do estudo 48 crianças entre 6 e 9 anos atendidas na Clínica Infantil da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade Nove de Julho. Foram selecionadas 21 crianças com bruxismo e 27 crianças no grupo controle. Um único examinador previamente treinado e "cego" em relação aos grupos realizou exame de palpação manual e auscultação bilateral das Articulações Temporomandibulares com a utilização de estetoscópio, extra-auricular lateral e dorsal para a análise dos ruídos articulares, diferenciando-os em crepitação e estalidos. Foi realizado o número mínimo de 3 repetições nas mensurações dos ruídos para cada criança. Foram realizadas as análises descritivas de todas as variáveis e o teste qui-quadrado foi utilizado para avaliar a associação entre as variáveis, adotando-se um nível de significância de 5%. RESULTADOS: em relação à presença de ruído 37,5% (n=18) apresentaram algum tipo de ruído articular, sendo que 72,2% (n=13) apresentaram estalido e 27,8% (n=5) apresentaram crepitação. Das 18 crianças que apresentaram algum tipo de ruído, 66,7% (n=12) também eram bruxistas. Foi observada associação estatisticamente significante entre a presença de ruído e bruxismo. Ao analisar a associação entre ruído e as variáveis gênero e idade, o grupo estudado não houve associação entre ruído e gênero, porém em relação à idade, houve uma maior porcentagem de crianças sem a presença de ruído articular aos 6 anos de idade, sendo estatisticamente significante. CONCLUSÃO: os dados do presente estudo mostraram associação entre bruxismo e ruídos articulares em crianças.
