Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying odontoblast damage repair in dentin hypersensitivity (DH) and the role of Yes-associated protein (YAP) in this process. METHODS The DH model was constructed in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, and the in vivo expression of Piezo1, Integrin αvβ3, YAP, and dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) was detected by immunohistochemistry. COMSOL Multiphysics software was used to simulate the dentinal tubule fluid flow velocity and corresponding fluid shear stress (FSS) on the odontoblast processes. MDPC-23 cells were cultured in vitro and loaded with a peristaltic pump for 1 hour at FSS values of 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 dyne/cm2. The expression of Piezo1, Integrin αvβ3, and YAP was detected by immunofluorescence. Verteporfin (a YAP-specific inhibitor) was utilised to confirm the effect of YAP on the expression of dentineogenesis-related protein under FSS. RESULTS The level and duration of external mechanical stimuli have an effect on the functional expression of odontoblasts. In DH, the harder the food that is chewed, the faster the flow of the dentinal tubule fluid and the greater the FSS on the odontoblast processes. The expression of Piezo1, Integrin αvβ3, and YAP can be promoted when the FSS is less than 0.3 dyne/cm2. After YAP inhibition, the DSPP protein expression level was reduced at 0.3 dyne/cm2 FSS. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that appropriate FSS can enhance the expression of odontoblast-related factors in odontoblasts via the Piezo1-Integrin αvβ3-YAP mechanotransduction pathway and the YAP appears to play an essential role in the response of odontoblasts to external mechanical stimuli.

Abstract
Due to the multiple factors contributing to dentin demineralization and hypersensitivity among individuals, the effectiveness of the available treatments in the long term remains unclear. A recent study reported a simple strategy to potentially mimic natural remineralization with increased crystallization on the enamel caries using fluoride iontophoresis. Such an effect is also ideal for accomplishing dentin biomineralization and structural strength. This study aimed to investigate structural and compositional characteristics and permeability changes after fluoride iontophoresis with different polarities, cathodal iontophoresis (CIP), anodal iontophoresis (AIP), and the control without iontophoresis for the treatment of etched dentin under simulated pulpal pressure. The 24 premolars were divided into 3 groups: CIP, AIP, and topical application of 5% sodium fluoride (NaF) for 40 s. Relative to before treatment, iontophoresis with both polarities significantly decreased the permeability with a visible increase in occluding tubules containing crystal formation and growth throughout the dentin structure and depth. The CIP not only restored the etched dentin surface into a sound condition but also reinforced the dentin across the structure and depth by the synergistic effects of remineralization, increasing crystal formation and transformation toward the more crystalline structure of fluorohydroxyapatite. Following topical treatment, X-ray diffraction analysis and Raman spectra revealed a significant reduction in the crystal size and crystallinity associated with the raised B-type carbonate substitution into the hydroxyapatite compared with that in the sound dentin. The result was the first to reveal the ideal strategy to rapidly restore the etched dentin surface into a sound condition, including reinforcing the dentin across the structure and depth by the synergistic effects of decreasing permeability, increasing crystal formation, and transformation toward the more crystalline structure of fluorohydroxyapatite using the 5% NaF applied with the DC cathode iontophoresis. The technique is noninvasive and simple and deserves further development for clinical application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate dentin wear and biological performance of desensitizing materials. METHODS Seventy bovine root dentin blocks were sectioned. Half of the surface of each specimen was untreated (control) and the other half was immersed in EDTA and treated with the following desensitizing materials: placebo varnish (PLA), fluoride varnish (FLU), sodium fluoride (NaF) varnish + sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP), universal adhesive (SBU), S-PRG varnish (SPRG), biosilicate (BIOS), and amelotin solution (AMTN). After application, the specimens were submitted to an erosive-abrasive challenge and the wear analyzed by optical profilometer. Serial dilutions of extracts obtained from the culture medium containing discs impregnated with those desensitizers were applied on fibroblasts and odontoblasts-like cells cultures. Cytotoxicity and production of total protein (TP) by colorimetric assays were determined after 24 h. Data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis, Dunn's, One-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (p ≤ 0.05). RESULTS No dentin wear was observed only for SBU. The lowest dentin wear was observed for AMTN and TMP. Cell viability was significantly reduced after treatment with undiluted extracts of PLA, FLU, TMP and SBU in fibroblasts and TMP and SBU in odontoblast-like cells. SPRG, BIOS and AMTN were cytocompatible at all dilutions tested. Considering TP results, no statistical difference was observed among the groups and high levels for TP were observed after TMP and FLU treatments. CONCLUSIONS Universal adhesive system may protect dentin with opened tubules from wear after challenge. Extracts of adhesive and fluoride varnishes presented cytotoxic mainly on fibroblasts. The enamel protein may be a future alternative to treat dentin with opened tubules because it may cause low wear under erosive-abrasive challenge with low cytotoxic effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is one of the most challenging and persistent dental complaints characterized by transient, intense pain triggered by various stimuli. It affects a significant portion of the global population, predominantly those aged 20-40. This study aims to evaluate the desensitizing efficacy of seventh-generation dentin bonding agents (Single Bond Universal by 3 M ESPE and Xeno-V + by Dentsply) against a control group using Bifluorid 12 by Voco in mitigating DH within a month of the follow-up period. METHODS This was a single-center, parallel-group, double-blind, controlled randomized clinical trial conducted at Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, Pakistan. A total of 105 patients with DH were allocated into three groups for this study. The patients were divided into three groups (Single Bond Universal by 3 M ESPE and Xeno-V + by Dentsply) and the control group containing fluoride varnish (Bifluorid 12 by Voco). Discomfort Interval Scale scores and Schiff Cold Air Sensitivity Scale scores were recorded at baseline, immediately after the intervention, after 01 weeks, and after 01 month. RESULTS All the materials demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in discomfort and sensitivity (DIS scores p-value 0.01) immediately after 01 week and over a period of 01 month after treatment compared with the baseline scores before application, with no single material proving superior over the one-month observation period. The study also provided insights into dental hygiene practices, with a significant majority using a toothbrush and sensitivity patterns, with cold stimuli being the most common cause of sensitivity. CONCLUSION The study demonstrates that Single Bond Universal, Xeno V+, and Bifluorid 12 are equally effective in reducing dentin hypersensitivity, with no distinct superiority observed over a one-month period. The findings highlight the potential of fluoride varnishes as a less technique-sensitive and cost-effective option for treating DH, offering valuable insights for future research and clinical practice. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of Biosilicate and Duraphat in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity (DH). METHODS AND MATERIALS This clinical trial was conducted with young adults presenting DH. A visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to assess the level of pain, using volatile and tactile tests. Forty participants presenting two teeth with DH were included, and these teeth were divided into two groups according to the treatment: Biosilicate or Duraphat. Each product was randomly applied on one tooth per participant once a week for 4 weeks and evaluated every 15 days for 60 days after the last application. RESULTS The mean and standard deviation (SD) of VAS values for the initial volatile sensitivity evaluation were 6.18 (1.99) and 6.08 (1.98) for the Biosilicate and Duraphat groups, respectively, and at the fourth week 0.48 (1.5) and 0.83 (1.58). After 60 days, the volatile sensitivity showed the following values: 0.63 (1.19) for Biosilicate and 1.03 (1.07) for Duraphat. The intragroup comparison showed a significant reduction of mean VAS values for DH-related pain assessed by volatile testing for both groups (p<0.001), and the assessment at the 60-day follow-up showed mean values statistically similar to those obtained at the end of treatment. Initial tactile sensitivity observed was 1.48 (2.39) for the Biosilicate and 1.4 (2.2) for the Duraphat group and at the 60-day follow-up 0.23 (0.73) and 0.15 (0.36), respectively, with significant statistical difference (p<0.002). When the reduction in tactile and volatile sensitivities between both groups was compared, no statistically significant difference was observed. CONCLUSION This study indicated that both products were able to promote an important reduction in dentin hypersensitivity with similar results within a 60-day follow-up.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dentin hypersensitivity, often occurring after dental treatments or from erosive lesions, is a prevalent patient complaint. This study introduces a paste combining 8% L-arginine, calcium carbonate, and potassium nitrate to evaluate its impact on dentinal tubules occlusion, dentin permeability, and tooth sensitivity. METHODS Dentin surfaces from 24 third molars (thickness: 2 mm) were divided into two groups of 12. One received the experimental paste, while the other received a placebo without desensitizer. Permeability and sealing ability were assessed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dentin permeability measurement. The pastes' effects on hypersensitivity were then examined in a triple-blind, randomized parallel-armed clinical trial with 16 eligible patients. Sensitivity to cold, touch, and spontaneous stimuli was recorded using the VAS scale at various intervals post-treatment. Statistical analysis was conducted using Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney U, Friedman, and Wilcoxon tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS The permeability test demonstrated a significant reduction in dentin permeability in the experimental group (P = 0.002) compared to the control (P = 0.178). SEM images revealed most dentinal tubules in the intervention samples to be occluded. Clinically, both groups showed a significant decrease in the three types of evaluated sensitivity throughout the study. However, no significant difference in sensitivities between the two groups was observed, with the exception of cold sensitivity at three months post-treatment (P = 0.054). CONCLUSION The innovative desensitizing paste featuring 8% L-arginine, calcium carbonate, and potassium nitrate effectively occluded dentinal tubules and reduced dentin permeability. It mitigated immediate and prolonged dentin hypersensitivity to various stimuli, supporting its potential role in managing dentin hypersensitivity. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The dentin exposure always leads to dentin hypersensitivity and the acid-resistant/abrasion-resistant stability of current therapeutic approaches remain unsatisfatory. Inspired by the excellent self-polymerization/adherence activity of mussels and the superior mineralization ability of bioactive glass, a novel radial mesoporous bioactive nanoglass coated with polydopamine (RMBG@PDA) was developed for prevention and management of dentin hypersensitivity. METHODS Radial mesoporous bioactive nanoglass (RMBG) was synthesized by the sol-gel process combined with the cetylpyridine bromide template self-assembly technique. RMBG@PDA was synthesized by a self-polymerization process involving dopamine and RMBG in an alkaline environment. Then, the nanoscale morphology, chemical structure, crystalline phase and Zeta potential of RMBG and RMBG@PDA were characterized. Subsequently, the ion release ability, bioactivity, and cytotoxicity of RMBG and RMBG@PDA in vitro were investigated. Moreover, an in vitro experimental model of dentin hypersensitivity was constructed to evaluate the effectiveness of RMBG@PDA on dentinal tubule occlusion, including resistances against acid and abrasion. Finally, the Young's modulus and nanohardness of acid-etched dentin were also detected after RMBG@PDA treatment. RESULTS RMBG@PDA showed a typical nanoscale morphology and noncrystalline structure. The use of RMBG@PDA on the dentin surface could effectively occlude dentinal tubules, reduce dentin permeability and achieve excellent acid- and abrasion-resistant stability. Furthermore, RMBG@PDA with excellent cytocompatibility held the capability to recover the Young's modulus and nanohardness of acid-etched dentin. CONCLUSION The application of RMBG@PDA with superior dentin tubule occlusion ability and acid/abrasion-resistant stability can provide a therapeutic strategy for the prevention and the management of dentin hypersensitivity.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the effects of two desensitizers and the Er,Cr:YSGG laser on human dentin tubules, applied alone or in combination. METHODS Ninety-six dentin specimens were obtained from extracted third molars and divided into six groups: Group 1: no-treatment (Control); Group 2: nano-hydroxyapatite desensitizer (NhapD); Group 3: NhapD+Er,Cr:YSGG laser (L); Group 4: Er,Cr:YSGG laser (L); Group 5: glutaraldehyde desensitizer (GD); and Group 6: GD+L, respectively. All specimens were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. The diameter and the number of open dentin tubules, the tubules' occluding ratio, and the mineral coverage area were measured via the Image J software at 2000× magnification. Atomic force microscopy was used to determine the blocking mechanism of desensitizing treatments and the surface morphology of dentin specimens. One-way ANOVA and Tukey tests were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The number of open tubules and the mean diameter of tubules for all treatment groups showed statistically significant differences from the control group The NhapD+L group had a significantly lower number of open tubules than the L and GD groups. The NhapD+L and L groups significantly had higher occluding ratios than the other groups. CONCLUSIONS The present study showed that the Er,Cr:YSGG laser alone was effective in terms of tubule occlusion and also contributed to increasing the occluding ratio of nano-hydroxyapatite. It may be recommended to use the Er,Cr:YSGG laser with nano-hydroxyapatite desensitizers to achieve effective tubule occlusion.

Abstract
Introduction Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is the most common problem encountered by clinicians. It can be managed either by blocking neural activities or by occluding tubules. Ozonated oil facilitates the simple passage of desensitizing agents into dentinal tubules. Aim This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ozonated oil on dentinal tubule occlusion before and after the application of desensitizing toothpaste. Materials and methods The study was carried out in Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences, KIIT (Deemed to be University), Bhubaneswar, India. The sample size of the study was 80. The first group contained specimens for control. The second group comprised specimens treated with ozonated oil. The third group comprised specimens being treated with a desensitizing agent. The fourth group contained specimens treated with both the desensitizing agent and ozonated oil. The specimens then received an acid challenge. The specimens were observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) before any therapy, after the application of the therapeutic agents and after the 37.5% ortho-phosphoric acid challenge. Results Inferential statistics to compare between the groups was calculated using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistics. Post-hoc Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) was performed to compare the groups. The mean scores of the partial tubular occlusion of Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4 before the acid challenge were 0.035, 0.691, 0.564 and 0.368, respectively. The maximum score was obtained in the case of Group 2, which was statistically significant. The mean scores for partial tubule occlusion after the acid challenge for Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4 were 0.055, 0.531, 0.733 and 0.142, respectively. There was evidence of maximum partial tubule occlusion after the acid treatment in the case of Group 3. The mean scores of Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4 before the acid challenge were 0.019, 0.309, 0.442 and 0.609, respectively. The maximum score was obtained in the case of Group 4, implying a greater number of total tubular occlusions before the acid challenge. The mean scores of the total tubular occlusions after the acid challenge for Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4 were 0.047, 0.465, 0.272 and 0.890, respectively. There was evidence of maximum tubule occlusion in the case of Group 4, which was statistically significant. Conclusion Overall, the application of a desensitizing toothpaste with ozonated oil holds promise as a potentially more effective treatment approach for DH. Further research and clinical studies may be needed to fully validate its efficacy and safety in dental practice.

Abstract
Purpose of Review Dental caries or tooth decay is one of the communal problems in the world which can affect not only the oral health but also the general health conditions. The main objective of this systematic review is to explore the efficacy of bioactive glass-based toothpastes against cariogenic bacteria. Recent Findings Bioactive glass particulates containing toothpaste show better remineralization potential on demineralized enamel and dentin when compared with toothpaste containing various bioactive constituents such as fluoride and potassium chloride. These constituents in conventional toothpaste can rapidly streak off due to acidic impact in the oral environment as the bioactive glass provides minerals for demineralized enamel and dentin by forming a strong hydroxyapatite (HAp) layer on its surface. Further, the therapeutic ions present in the bioglass can resist plaque formation by raising the pH of the surrounding environment or saliva and create amicable media for healthier teeth. Summary Toothpaste containing bioactive glass particles undoubtedly displayed the remineralizing potentiality of the dental hard tissues. Dynamics of the mineralization through different bioactive glass materials needs further investigations. In order to prevent dental cavities and improve oral health, it is important to identify and study different effective bioglass particles in toothpaste.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dentin hypersensitivity is one of the most common complains faced by dental professionals, and there is still lack of consensus for the most effective treatment approaches. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of ozone therapy combined with sodium fluoride in reducing pain associated with dental hypersensitivity, compared to a paint-on adhesive desensitizing agent. METHODS The study included 20 patients (131 teeth), selected according to specific inclusion criteria and divided into two groups according to the type of desensitizing therapy (ozone with sodium fluoride or paint-on adhesive). The efficacy of both treatments were evaluated recording pain for each treated tooth immediately after treatment, after 1 month and after 6 months using a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Subjective parameters were also recorded: patients were asked to report whether they experienced pain caused by air, teeth brushing, cold and hot topical stimuli (present/absent). RESULTS In both groups, pain values significantly decreased over time. Six months after treatment we registered significantly lower pain values in the ozone-treated group compared with the adhesive group and the mean percentage of NRS reduction from was significantly higher in the ozone-treated group. We did not register significant differences in subjective pain-related parameters between groups. CONCLUSIONS The results of this exploratory study were aimed at exploring the combined effect of ozone with natrium fluoride, which was before described only in vitro. With the limitation of the sample size, our results suggest that this approach provides a pain reduction that was comparable to the paint-on adhesive.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this research was to investigate the functions of Piezo channels in dentin defect, including mechanical signalling and odontoblast responses. METHODS Rat dentin-defect models were constructed, and spatiotemporal expression of Piezo proteins was detected in the pulpo-dentinal complex. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (rtPCR) was used to investigate the functional expression pattern of Piezo channels in odontoblasts. Moreover, RNA interference technology was employed to uncover the underlying mechanisms of the Piezo-driven inflammatory response and repair under fluid shear stress (FSS) conditions in vitro. RESULTS Piezo1 and Piezo2 were found to be widely expressed in the odontoblast layer and dental pulp in the rat dentin-defect model during the end stage of reparative dentin formation. The expression levels of the Piezo1 and Piezo2 genes in MDPC-23 cells were high in the initial stage under FSS loading and then decreased over time. Moreover, the expression trends of inflammatory, odontogenic, and mineralisation genes were generally contrary to those of Piezo1 and Piezo2 over time. After silencing of Piezo1/Piezo2, FSS stimulation resulted in significantly higher expression of inflammatory, odontogenesis, and mineralisation genes in MDPC-23 cells. Finally, the expression of genes involved in the integrin β1/ERK1 and Wnt5b/β-catenin signalling pathways was changed in response to RNA silencing of Piezo1 and Piezo2. CONCLUSIONS Piezo1 and Piezo2 may be involved in regulating the expression of inflammatory and odontogenic genes in odontoblasts stimulated by FSS.

Abstract
Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a common oral health issue and occlusion of the exposed dentinal tubules (DTs) is regarded as the most effective therapeutic treatment nowadays. However, it is still difficult to develop easy and effective strategies for deep occlusion of DTs. In this study, we develop a strategy for occluding DTs deeply and compactly via simple application of occlusion media including (poly-L-aspartic acid)‑strontium (PAsp‑strontium) and phosphate/fluoride. The bonding of strontium ions to poly-L-aspartic acid formed a positively charged PAsp‑strontium complexes. After application of 15 min each, the PAsp‑strontium and phosphate/fluoride rapidly penetrated into the DTs in turn via the electrostatic interaction, then occluded the DTs with crystals up to a depth of 150 μm. The occlusion within DTs was resistant to abrasive and acidic challenges. The occlusion media performed better than commercial desensitizers Duraphat and Gluma. Moreover, this strategy possessed sufficient biocompatible and excellent performance in vivo. The application of occlusion media would shed light on in the management of DH.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) affects patients' oral health-related quality of life, but is not always optimally treated in dental offices. The objectives were to assess dentists' DH-related education, knowledge, and professional behavior and explore relationships between education, knowledge, and behavior. METHODS Survey data were collected from 220 ADA members in the United States. Descriptive and correlational analyses were performed. RESULTS About half of the respondents agreed/strongly agreed that their dental school had educated them well about diagnosing DH in classroom-based (53.6%) and clinical settings (48.9%). Lower percentages agreed being well educated about treating DH (40.9%/37.3%). The majority self-educated themselves about DH after dental school by attending continuing education courses in person or online (60.6%/36.8%), reading articles (64.1%), or consulting with colleagues (59.6%). The majority knew that patients with DH describe their pain as stimulated (91.4%) and that recessed gingiva (89.6%), abrasion lesions (72.3%), tooth whitening (63.1%), erosion lesions (58.6%), and abfraction lesions (51.4%) are risk factors for DH. The majority diagnosed DH with patient self-reporting, confirmed by exams (81.8%), applying air blasts (53.7%), or cold-water (52.3%). They treated patients with DH often/very often with over-the-counter desensitizing agents (90%), and prescribing fluoride formulations toothpaste (82.8%) and/or potassium nitrate toothpastes (60.9%). In their offices, the majority (73.2%) educated their patients often/very often about DH and used fluoride dental varnish for treating DH (71.8%). The more recently respondents had graduated from dental school, the more positively they described their dental school education (r = 0.14; p < 0.05), the more ways to diagnose DH they used (r = 0.16; p < 0.05) and the more often they used fluoride dental varnish in their offices (r = 0.23; p < 0.001). The more dentists had educated themselves, the more methods for diagnosing DH they used (r = 0.23; p < 0.001) and the more often they used potassium oxalate products (r = 0.19; p < 0.01), Arginine/calcium products (r = 0.19; p < 0.01) and dentin bonding (r = 0.22; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS More recently graduating from dental school correlates with more positive evaluations of DH-related dental school education. The finding that most dentists engage in self-education about DH after dental school should motivate dental educators to increase education about this topic not only in dental school, but also in continuing education courses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate whether the use of desensitizing dentifrices containing obliterating agents can affect bond strength of eroded/abraded dentin. METHODOLOGY A total of 100 dentin samples were obtained from human molars. The teeth were cut into 3 mm-thickness discs and allocated in five groups (n=20), according to the toothpaste used: WoF - abrasion with fluoride-free toothpaste (Cocoricó); Arg - toothpaste containing arginine (Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief); Nov - calcium sodium phosphosilicate toothpaste (Sensodyne Repair and Protect); SnF - fluoride-containing toothpaste (AmF/SnCl2/SnF2 - Elmex Erosion); and Control (no erosive/abrasive process). The erosive/abrasive cycle consisted of immersion in citric acid (1%, pH 2.6, 5 min, 4×/day) and abrasion (2×/day, 120-20 sec abrasion, 100 sec immersion) with each toothpaste. During intervals, samples were immersed in artificial saliva. This cycle was performed for five days. Two resin cylinders (2 mm in diameter) were constructed on each sample for the shear bond strength test using a universal adhesive system. The self-etch and etch-and-rinse (Scotchbond Universal) strategies were employed, each in half of the total sample (n=10). Bond strength (MPa) was measured in a shear test and failure modes were assessed with a stereomicroscope. Statistical analysis was performed using the two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests (p<0.05). RESULTS A statistically significant difference was found between the adhesive strategies tested (p<0.001), with the self-etching form showing higher values than the etch-and-rinse. Moreover, no significant differences were observed between the tested toothpastes (p=0.750) and interactions (p=0.438). CONCLUSION The use of toothpaste containing obliterating agents does not affect bond strength to dentin subjected to erosive/abrasive conditions when a universal adhesive is used. However, the self-etch strategy might be preferred for eroded/abraded dentin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of dentin hypersensitivity (DH) treatment using a newly developed device based on a powder jet deposition (PJD) technique that creates a hydroxyapatite (HAP) layer on the dentin surface, thereby alleviating the hypersensitivity. The effect of the PJD treatment was compared with that of conventional treatment using Teethmate Desensitizer (TMD; calcium-phosphate containing material with TTCP (Ca4(PO4)2O) and DCPA (CaHPO4)), which has been used clinically in Japan with well-confirmed effectiveness. MATERIALS AND METHODS A randomized controlled trial was conducted including 35 patients who had symptoms of DH in two or more quadrants. Two test teeth were selected per patient (70 teeth in total) and randomly assigned to PJD or TMD treatment. The efficacy was evaluated using the improvement rate for air and scratch pain according to the scores obtained via visual analog scale 12 weeks after treatment. The safety assessment was performed focusing on gingival index (GI) and spontaneous pain. The t-test was used to analyze the non-inferiority of PJD treatment compared to TMD treatment. RESULTS The improvement rate of air pain was 69.0% for PJD and 69.7% for TMD. The improvement rate of scratch pain was 80.8% for PJD and 81.7% for TMD. Non-inferiority with a margin of 10% was not observed for both air and scratch pain. No change was observed in GI from baseline and the improvement rate of spontaneous pain for PJD was higher than that for TMD. CONCLUSION Non-inferiority of PJD to TMD treatment was not observed in this study; however, it was not statistically demonstrated, and the results were thus interpreted as inconclusive. PJD did improve the DH symptoms, as did TMD. PJD's therapeutic effect was most likely attributable to the deposition of a HAP layer on the tooth surface, which would alleviate hypersensitivity for at least 12 weeks without causing severe adverse events. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of two glutaraldehyde-based desensitizers (L: GLUMA Desensitizer, Heraeus Kulzer and G: GLUMA Desensitizer PowerGel) prior to the adhesive procedures on microtensile bond strength (µTBS) to dentin and endogenous enzymatic activity. METHODS Noncarious human third molars (N = 48) were cut to expose middle coronal dentin. Six experimental groups were formed according to the dentin pre-treatment (L or G) and the universal adhesives (IBU - iBond universal, Kulzer or AU - Adhese Universal, Ivoclar Vivadent) used in the self-etch mode (n = 8): 1) L/IBU; 2) G/IBU; 3) IBU; 4) L/AU; 5) G/AU; 6) AU. Specimens were cut into sticks and stressed until failure after 24 h (T0) or 1 yr of aging (T12). Additional 4 teeth were used for in situ zymography evaluation and data were statistically analyzed (α = 0.05). RESULTS Dentin pre-treatment, adhesive and aging statistically influenced bond strength and enzymatic activity (P<0.001). AU demonstrated higher bond strength values than IBU (P<0.001). The L resulted in higher bond strength compared to the G and control groups (P<0.001). aging statistically influenced bonding performance, especially when no dentin pre-treatment was performed (P<0.001). In situ zymography revealed that at baseline the control groups exhibited lower interfacial fluorescence compared to the experimental groups, irrespective of the adhesive used (P<0,001). However, after 1 yr of artificial storage, no differences were found among the groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Glutharldeadeyde-based products increased bond strength and determined a stabilization of the adhesive interface over time apparently not related to the MMPs inhibition. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The results of this in vitro study suggest that the application of glutaraldehyde-based desensitizers prior to the adhesive procedures when associated with universal adhesives could result in increased bond strength and stabilization of the adhesive interface over time.

Abstract
Objective To compare the effectiveness of cyanoacrylate to other treatments or placebo in the management of dentin hypersensitivity (DH). Materials and Methods The present review was organized based on the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. The search aimed to answer the following question: is cyanoacrylate effective in the treatment of DH when compared to other treatments or placebo? The following databases were used: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, BVS, Web of Science, Cochrane, Clinicaltrials.gov, Portal Periódicos Capes, Google Scholar, and manual search. The evaluation process started with the information collected from the selected articles according to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT). Results Two randomized and five nonrandomized clinical trials were analyzed in the qualitative synthesis. The studies presented different cyanoacrylate formulations, different scales for evaluating pain, and different methods for provoking a painful stimulus. Cyanoacrylate-based products reduce DH in shorter follow-up periods and this reduction persisted throughout the study. The results varied according to the methods used to stimulate the pain. Only two articles showed a low risk of bias and a high level of scientific evidence. Conclusion Although there is a limited number of studies in the scientific literature with appropriate methodological quality, the available evidence proves the effectiveness of cyanoacrylate in the treatment of DH. Clinical Relevance. Cyanoacrylate is easy to access, effective, easily applicable, and a low-cost product with satisfactory results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effectiveness of the 980-nm diode laser for dentinal tubule occlusion, measure the intrapulpal temperature, and investigate the dental pulp response. MATERIALS AND METHODS The dentinal samples were randomly divided into G1-G7 groups: control; 980-nm laser irradiation (0.5 W, 10 s; 0.5 W, 10 s × 2; 0.8 W, 10 s; 0.8 W, 10 s × 2; 1.0 W, 10 s; 1.0 W, 10 s × 2). The dentin discs were applied for laser irradiation and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The intrapulpal temperature was measured on the 1.0-mm and 2.0-mm thickness samples, and then divided into G2-G7 groups according to laser irradiation. Moreover, forty Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into the laser-irradiated group (euthanized at 1, 7, and 14 days after irradiation) and the control group (non-irradiated). qRT-PCR, histomorphology, and immunohistochemistry analysis were employed to evaluate the response of dental pulp. RESULTS SEM indicated the occluding ratio of dentinal tubules in the G5 (0.8 W, 10 s × 2) and G7 (1.0 W, 10 s × 2) were significantly higher than the other groups (p < 0.05). The maximum intrapulpal temperature rises in the G5 were lower than the standard line (5.5 ℃). qRT-PCR showed that the mRNA expression level of TNF-α and HSP-70 upregulated significantly at 1 day (p < 0.05). Histomorphology and immunohistochemistry analysis showed that, compared with the control group, the inflammatory reaction was slightly higher at the 1 and 7 days (p < 0.05) and decreased to the normal levels at 14 days (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS A 980-nm laser at a power of 0.8 W with 10 s × 2 defines the best treatment for dentin hypersensitivity in terms of compromise between the efficacy of the treatment and the safety of the pulp. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The 980-nm laser is an effective option for treating dentin sensitivity. However, we need to ensure the safety of the pulp during laser irradiation.

Abstract
The aim of this systematic review is to compare home and office desensitizers containing bioactive glass with control groups in randomized controlled trials (RCT) conducted between 2018 and 2022. According to PRISMA guidelines, three electronic databases (Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane Library) were searched for published scientific articles in October 2022. RCT with adult participants with dentin hypersensitivity (DH) diagnosed by evaporative, mechanical, or thermal stimulation, with a follow-up period and quantified pain assessment were included in the study. Studies that reported DH due to tooth restoration, crown preparation, bleaching, or periodontal surgery or used bioactive glass-ceramics were excluded. The quality of the studies was assessed using version 2 of the Cochrane Risk-of-Bias Tool for randomized studies (RoB 2 tool). Articles that were duplicative or unrelated to this study were excluded. Nine articles were selected for full-text evaluation, whereas two articles were rejected. The remaining seven reports were included in this review. The calcium sodium phosphosilicate group (CSPS) was not significantly different from the positive control groups. Compared with the control groups, fluoro calcium phosphosilicate (FCPS) may be the most effective long-term treatment option. In terms of DH symptom reduction, the FCPS group performed better than the CSPS group. CSPS at a concentration of 5-15% and FCPS at a concentration of 5% are effective in treating DH in adult participants.

Abstract
As a global public health focus, oral health plays a vital role in facilitating overall health. Defected teeth characterized by exposure of dentin generally increase the risk of aggravating oral diseases. The exposed dentinal tubules provide channels for irritants and bacterial invasion, leading to dentin hypersensitivity and even pulp inflammation. Cariogenic bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on dentin are responsible for tooth demineralization and caries. It remains a clinical challenge to achieve the integration of tubule occlusion, collagen mineralization, and antibiofilm functions for managing exposed dentin. To address this issue, an epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and poly(allylamine)-stabilized amorphous calcium phosphate (PAH-ACP) co-delivery hollow mesoporous silica (HMS) nanosystem (E/PA@HMS) was herein developed. The application of E/PA@HMS effectively occluded the dentinal tubules with acid- and abrasion-resistant stability and inhibited the biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans. Intrafibrillar mineralization of collagen fibrils and remineralization of demineralized dentin were induced by E/PA@HMS. The odontogenic differentiation and mineralization of dental pulp cells with high biocompatibility were also promoted. Animal experiments showed that E/PA@HMS durably sealed the tubules and inhibited biofilm growth up to 14 days. Thus, the development of the E/PA@HMS nanosystem provides promising benefits for protecting exposed dentin through the coordinated manipulation of dentin caries and hypersensitivity.

Abstract
Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) pain is a persistent clinical problem, which is a common condition known to affect patients' quality of life (QoL), but no treatment has ever been agreed upon. Calcium phosphates, available in different forms, have properties that allow sealing the dentinal tubules, which may relieve dentin hypersensitivity. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the ability of different formulations of calcium phosphate to reduce dentin hypersensitivity pain level in clinical studies. The inclusion criterion was as follows: clinical randomized controlled studies using calcium phosphates in treating dentin hypersensitivity. In December 2022, three electronic databases (Pubmed, Cochrane and Embase) were searched. The search strategy was performed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The bias assessment risks results were carried out using the Cochrane Collaboration tool. A total of 20 articles were included and analyzed in this systematic review. The results show that calcium phosphates have properties that reduce DH-associated pain. Data compilation showed a statistically significant difference in DH pain level between T0 and 4 weeks. This VAS level reduction is estimated at about -2.5 compared to the initial level. The biomimetic and non-toxic characteristics of these materials make them a major asset in treating dentin hypersensitivity.

Abstract
Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a very common dental problem that can have a negative impact on the quality of life and can lead to invasive dental procedures. Prevention of DH and control of symptoms are highly desirable. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) has been shown in vitro to block dentinal tubules and in vivo to be a safe and effective additive in oral care products that reduce DH clinically. This study's aim was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current evidence that HAP-containing oral care products reduce DH. Databases were searched, and only clinical trials in humans were included; studies conducted in vitro or on animals were not included. Publications in a foreign language were translated and included. We found 44 published clinical trials appropriate for systematic analysis. More than half of the trials had high-quality GRADE scores. HAP significantly reduced dentin hypersensitivity compared to placebo (39.5%; CI 95% [48.93; 30.06]), compared to fluoride (23%; CI 95% [34.18; 11.82]), and with a non-significant tendency compared to other desensitizing agents (10.2%; CI 95% [21.76; -19.26]). In conclusion, the meta-analysis showed that HAP added to oral care products is a more effective agent than fluoride in controlling dentin hypersensitivity and may be superior to other desensitizers.

Abstract
AIM This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated whether the home use of mouthwashes containing potassium salts is effective in reducing and controlling dentin hypersensitivity (DH). METHODS AND MATERIALS This study is reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) checklist and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021228410). Randomized clinical trials evaluating the use of mouthwashes containing potassium salt for daily household mouthwash for at least four weeks to reduce DH compared with a control mouthwash were selected, with no limitation on year of publication. Electronic research was carried out in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library by two independent researchers. One hundred thirty-three articles were obtained, and nine were selected according to the inclusion criteria. RESULTS The selected studies evaluated DH through tests of sensitivity to tactile and evaporative stimuli and showed that, for the tactile stimulus, there were no baseline differences between groups (p=0.12; mean difference: -0.33; confidence intervals [CI]: -0.73 to 0.08). However, there were significant differences after two weeks of use (p=0.00001; mean difference: 4.67; CI: 4.53 to 4.81), after four weeks (p=0.00001; mean difference: 13.29; CI: 13.03 to 13.55), and after eight weeks (p=0.00001; mean difference: 8.88; CI: 5.73 to 12.02) favoring the experimental group. The results of the evaporative test showed no differences in the baseline assessment between the two groups (p=0.50; mean difference: -0.02; CI: -0.09 to 0.04), but after four weeks (p=0.00001; mean difference: -0.32; CI: -0.44 to -0.20), and eight weeks of use (p=0.00001; mean difference: -0.42; CI: -0.57 to -0.27) there were differences favoring the experimental group. The incidence of side effects showed no differences between the two groups (p=0.89; mean difference: 1.03; CI: 0.67 to 1.58). CONCLUSION The daily use of mouthwashes containing potassium salt is effective in the treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity, as a complementary step to brushing at least twice a day for two weeks, four weeks, and up to eight weeks, without presenting side effects.

Abstract
THE AIM OF THE STUDY Was to develop an algorithm for the correction of pain syndrome using the drug Ketorol Express depending on the level of situational and personal anxiety of patients during office teeth whitening. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study involved 60 people (mean age 25±0.85 years), who were divided into three groups depending on the level of personal and situational anxiety according to the Spielberger scale modified by Yu. L. Khanin. In the first group of patients with a high level of anxiety Ketorol Express was prescribed as a preventive analgesia before the whitening procedure, then the drug was used in case of pain. In the second group, patients with an average level of anxiety the drug was prescribed immediately after the whitening procedure, and then used in the event of a pain syndrome. The third group of patients with a low level of anxiety took the drug only in case of pain. To assess the severity of pain, the general well-being by the patient and the general well-being by the doctor, visual analogue scales were used. RESULTS The study showed that the occurrence and correction of pain syndrome during teeth whitening depends on the patient's psycho-emotional state (both personal and situational anxiety). CONCLUSION The developed regimen for prescribing Ketorol Express can significantly reduce pain in patients with different levels of anxiety.

Abstract
Introduction Dentin hypersensitivity has been defined as a short, sharp pain caused by exposing naked dentin to external stimuli such as evaporation, heat, cold, osmotic liquids, and tactile effects. None of the available treatments has been considered the gold standard in treating dentin hypersensitivity. The use of laser has recently become more popular, and it is a promising treatment method in this field. The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of both 810 nm and 650 nm diode lasers in treating dentin hypersensitivity. Materials and methods This study was conducted on six patients who were referred to the Department of Oral Medicine, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Damascus University (4 females and 2 males) with 108 teeth suffering from generalized dentin hypersensitivity and were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 consisted of three patients with 50 teeth treated with an 810 nm diode laser; it was divided by the split-mouth design into two subgroups. The first subgroup was treated by the application of the laser alone toward the target area with 1-watt power, continuous mode, and a total application time of 90 seconds, and the second subgroup was treated by applying sodium fluoride gel for one minute, then the laser was applied with the same settings as the first subgroup. Group 2 consisted of three patients with 58 teeth treated with a 650 nm diode laser; it was divided by the split-mouth design into two subgroups. The first subgroup was treated by the application of the laser alone toward the target area with 200 m watt power, continuous mode, and a total application time of 120 seconds, and the second subgroup was treated by applying sodium fluoride gel for one minute and then applying the laser with the same settings as the first subgroup. The pain was evaluated using a numeric rating scale (NRS) of 100 degrees before and immediately after treatment, and then after three to six and nine months by applying an air stream from a dental chair syringe at a distance of 0.5 cm from the target area. Results This study showed that both types of lasers were effective in treating pain caused by dentinal hypersensitivity. The average values of pain reduction on the NRS showed the superiority of the 810 nm diode laser over the 650 nm after treatment and at all time points of pain assessment. No statistically significant differences were detected between applying laser alone and applying it combined with sodium fluoride gel in pain reduction values. Conclusions The application of an 810 nm diode laser either alone or in combination with sodium fluoride gel in treating dentin hypersensitivity is effective and better than the application of a 650 nm diode laser either alone or in combination with sodium fluoride gel. In addition, applying a 650 nm diode laser either alone or in combination with sodium fluoride gel has slight effectiveness in treating dentine hypersensitivity, and it is believed that a single treatment session with a 650 nm diode laser was not enough to obtain the required pain reduction.

Aims: This study aims to evaluate the effects of the diode laser on dentinal tubules by a diode laser, as well as the mechanism of the diode laser (976 nm) and chemical agent (sodium fluoride gel) in occluding the dentinal tubules in vitro.
Materials and Methods: Ten extracted human premolars were utilized in the current in vitro experimental SEM study. Using a diamond saw at a coronal dentin, disks of 1.0 mm thickness were cut perpendicular to the long axis of each tooth. Ten dentin disks were selected, and each disk was divided into four equal parts, pre-treated with Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic Acid 17%, then divided into four groups; (Group 1) control, (Group 2) diode laser 976 nm of 1 watt, (Group 3) Sodium fluoride only and (Group 4) combined laser and sodium fluoride varnish. The samples were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope at different magnifications (100µm, 50µm, 20µm, and 2µm). ANOVA Test was used to compare the diameter of the tubules and area between the four groups, with the level of significance set at a p-value of ˂0.05.
Results: Group 1 (control, no treatment) showed an opening of all the dentinal tubules. Both samples of Group 2 (laser) and Group 3 (Sodium Fluoride) demonstrated partial occlusion and narrowing of most dentinal tubules, while Group 4 (combined) showed total occlusion of almost all the dentinal tubules. There is a statistically significant difference between the four groups regarding the diameter of the dentinal tubules and the area of 5×5 mm diameter on the dentin disks.
Conclusions: The combination of Diode laser (976 nm) 1W and sodium fluoride varnish significantly affected the dentinal tubule occlusion, thus preventing DH.

Abstract
In this retrospective study, data for three different laser-assisted approaches for the management of dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) was collected (n = 920 teeth). In total, 387 teeth were treated with photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy with 660 nm red light laser (PBM group), 327 were treated with the Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) and 206 were treated with the Nd:YAP laser (1340 nm). To assess the effectiveness of each treatment, a visual analogue scale (VAS) was used, where zero represented no pain at all and ten represented the greatest pain. VAS was used before (T0), immediately after (T1), one week after (T2), four weeks after (T3), six months after (T4) and one year after treatment (T5). Means and standard deviations of VAS at different follow-up times were calculated. Values were compared within and between groups. Statistical significance was considered to be achieved when p-value was less than 0.05. Confidence level was proposed to be 99% with a P value lower than 0.001. Within groups, a statistically significant reduction was obtained when the mean value of VAS at T0 was compared with T5. At T5, the PBM group had the highest reduction of VAS (with mean value of 0), while the Nd:YAG and Nd:YAP groups had scores of 1.065 ± 0.674 and 4.665 ± 0.674, respectively. Conclusion: this retrospective study showed that PBM therapy and irradiation with Nd:YAG and Nd:YAP lasers are effective in managing DH pain. However, PBM therapy was the only procedure that showed complete pain relief at six and twelve months after treatment.

Abstract
The sealing and bonding characteristics of luting cements may be affected by the application of desensitizers containing ingredients that induce chemical interaction with dentin organic matrix. This study evaluated the effect of different desensitizers on the immediate and long-term shear bond strength (SBS) of a self-adhesive resin cement (SARC) to dentin. Healthy bovine dentin specimens were used for the study. Gluma® Desensitizer, Desensibilize Nano P®, and Soothe® desensitizer were used in study groups, while the control group did not receive any treatment. Next, SARC (RelyXTM U200) in cylindrical mold was applied to the sample surface. All specimens were stored at 37 °C for 24 h or six months and tested for SBS. Additionally, water contact angle was measured using an optical tensiometer. Results were analyzed by analysis of variance and Student-t tests (p ˂ 0.05). Application of the different types of desensitizers had no significant influence on immediate or long-term SBS of SARC to dentin (p > 0.05). Differences for water contact angle were not statistically significant among the tested groups (p = 0.450). Within the limitations of the present study, it can be concluded that the application of the different types of desensitizers had no significant influence on the SBS of a SARC to dentin.

Abstract
Bioactive glasses have been recommended for the occlusion of dentinal tubules in treating cervical dentin hypersensitivity. This study evaluates an in vivo model of dentin exposure, and tests the efficacy of bioglass treatments. Thirty male Wistar rats received gingival recession surgery on the upper left first molar. The treatments were applied over the surface of the exposed dentin every 4 days for 28 days. The groups were as follows: Naive; Gingival recession; Cavity varnish; Biosilicate®; Strontium bioglass; and Potassium bioglass. Changes in the dentin-pulp complex, and the presence of substance P, were evaluated through hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemical staining. The groups had similar results. Teeth with exposed dentinal tubules in rats showed a typical pattern in the dentin-pulp complex and immunotracing for substance P. The materials did not cause pulp damage. The effects of gingival recession and open dentinal tubules on pulp tissue require further clarification.

Abstract
Objectives This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate different protocols for dentin hypersensitivity treatment with low-power lasers and desensitizing agents, and the association between low-power lasers and desensitizing agents. Materials and methods Fifty-four patients (303 teeth) were randomly allocated to three groups: G1, 3% nitrate potassium gel, UltraEZ (n = 17); G2, photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) with a low-level infrared laser (n = 17), 100 mW, spot size of 0.028 cm2, and dose of 1 J per point; and G3, nitrate potassium + PBM (n = 20). Treatments were applied to the buccal cervical region at intervals of 72 h, and all protocols were performed in three sessions. The patients’ response to evaporative stimuli was rated using the visual analog scale (VAS). Re-evaluations were performed immediately after each application and 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after treatment. A two-way repeated measures test and Tukey’s post hoc test were used for multiple comparisons (α = 5%). Results There was a reduction in pain levels at the end of treatment in all groups. There were no significant differences in VAS score changes between the groups immediately after treatment and after the third month, compared to the baseline (p > 0.05). Conclusion Under the limitations of this in vivo study, the proposed three-session protocol was effective in reducing dentin hypersensitivity after 3 months, regardless of the desensitization mechanism used. Conservative and long-term protocols are interesting for the control of pain caused by dentin hypersensitivity. Clinical relevance The increase in cervical dentin hypersensitivity prevalence warrants easy-to-apply and long-lasting desensitizing protocols for pain control.

Assessment of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) improvement of different treatments for dentin hypersensitivity in noncarious cervical lesions-a randomized clinical study. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the improvement on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of individuals with cervical dentin hypersensitivity (CDH) with the noncarious cervical lesion (NCCLs) subjected to different treatments. MATERIAL AND METHODS A single-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted with patients (n = 74) randomly allocated into three groups according to the treatment performed: PO, potassium oxalate (Oxa-Gel BF); LL, low-power laser irradiation; and POLL, potassium oxalate (Oxa-Gel BF) associated with low-power laser irradiation. The treatments were applied in four steps, weekly. The questionnaire Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) was applied before initiating and immediately after the fourth session. The greater the sum of the score, the smaller the measurement of OHRQoL. RESULTS The total mean values of the variables at the final moment were significantly lower than the initial one for all dimensions (p value ranging from < 0.001 to 0.006). Furthermore, the OHIP-14 scores final analysis between the groups indicated that the POLL group compared to LL had a significantly lower final score for the functional limitation (p = 0.009), physical pain (p = 0.049), and psychological discomfort (p = 0.035) dimensions and that group PO compared to group LL had a significantly lower final score for the functional limitation dimension (p = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS There was a reduction in the OHIP-14 score for all dimensions, indicating an improvement in patients' quality of life after the use of desensitizing therapies. Patients in group LL had a higher functional limitation, physical pain, and psychological discomfort. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study indicated improvement of desensitizing therapies for CDH to improve patients' OHRQoL. TRIAL REGISTRATION This trial was registered in the Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry Platform (REBEC protocol number RBR-4ybjmt).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study tested the ability of bioactive pastes containing niobophosphate and 45S5 glasses to reduce dentin permeability and to obliterate dentinal tubules, as a mean of reducing human dentin hypersensitivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Experimental pastes with concentrations of 10, 20, and 30 wt% of two bioactive glasses (45S5 or niobophosphate [NbG]) were formulated. A paste without bioactive glass (placebo) and a commercial paste (Nano P, FGM) were used as controls. Forty dentin disc specimens were obtained from caries-free extracted third human molars and divided in 8 groups (n = 5). Percentage of permeability (%Lp) was assessed in a dental permeability machine considering hydraulic conductance, immediately after pastes application and at day 7, day 14, and day 21. The precipitates formed on the surface of the dentin discs (and dentinal tubules) were analyzed by SEM/EDS and micro-Raman spectra. Data of dentin permeability (%) 2-way repeated-measures (ANOVA) and Holm-Sidak post-tests (α = 0.05). Dentinal tubule obliteration was visually (and elemental) evaluated and descriptively reported. RESULTS The experimental bioactive glass pastes containing NbG and 45S5, regardless of the concentration, reduced dentin permeability in comparison with pastes without bioactive glasses (P < 0.05). The formulated placebo and commercial paste did not reduce permeability over time (P < 0.05). SEM/EDS and micro-Raman analyses showed that both type of bioactive pastes (NbG or 45S5-based) presented mineral precipitates obliterating the dentinal tubules at day 21. NbG seems to offer a better initial effect than 45S5, while at 21 days there is no difference between both glasses. CONCLUSION Experimental bioactive pastes containing NbG and 45S5 (at concentrations of 10%, 20%, or 30%) have potential to reduce dentin permeability (over time) in comparison with pastes without bioactive glasses; and this occurs on behalf of obliteration of dentinal tubules by microparticle and precipitate formation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Bioactive pastes containing NbG and 45S5 may benefit patients presenting dentin hypersensitivity, because these pastes can start acting fast after application and maintain their action up to 21 days.

Abstract
Purpose To assess the efficacy of Er,Cr:YSGG lasers in reducing dentine hypersensitivity (DH). Methods Electronic literature were searched through various databases (MEDLINE, SCOPUS, ProQuest, LILACS and EBSCO) up to March 2022 for articles addressing the following focused question: “In patients with dentine hypersensitivity, does an Er,Cr:YSGG laser provide a better outcome in terms of pain reduction than other dentine desensitizer agents?”. The literature was searched using combinations of the following medical subject heading (MeSH) terms and keywords: (laser OR phototherapy OR Er,Cr:YSGG laser) AND (dentine hypersensitivity OR dentine sensitivity OR dental sensitivity). Results A total of 486 studies were found, of which 7 randomized controlled trials were included in the review. The Er,Cr:YSGG laser wavelengths, power density and duration of irradiation used in the studies were 2780 nanometers, 0.25–0.5 watts and 20–60 seconds, respectively. The follow-up assessments were conducted ranging from immediately to 3 months after treatment. All studies showed that the Er,Cr:YSGG laser was effective in alleviating DH. Conclusion This systematic review suggests that the application of an Er,Cr:YSSG laser is effective in alleviating DH and may have limited adverse effects if adequate parameters are followed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the treatment efficacy of low-level light therapy on dentin hypersensitivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Following the PRISMA guideline, six electronic databases supplemented with bibliographies were searched till December 2020. Two reviewers performed the screenings independently with a reliability assessment. Studies fulfilling the pre-registered eligibility criteria were included for risk-of-bias assessment and data synthesis. RESULTS Thirty-five articles ultimately informed this systematic review based on the eligibility criteria and underwent risk-of-bias assessment (ĸ = 0.86). Quantitative results were deduced by meta-analysis of 20 randomised controlled trials: LLLT showed favourable outcomes compared to placebos for immediate (SMD: 1.09, 95% CI: 0.47 to 1.70), interim (SMD: 1.32, 95% CI: 0.41 to 2.23), and persistent efficacies (SMD: 2.86, 95% CI: 1.98 to 3.74). However, substantial heterogeneity existed among included studies (I2: 64-95%). Regarding comparisons with other desensitising strategies, LLLT showed no significant benefits in DH alleviation over others except fluorides for interim efficacy (SMD: 0.31, 95% CI: 0.10 to 0.52) and persistent efficacy (SMD: 0.45, 95% CI: 0.03 to 0.86). CONCLUSIONS This systematic review shows that LLLT has positive immediate, interim, and persistent DH-treatment efficacies compared with placebo. No superior treatment effects of LLLT were observed except fluoride agent use. Further studies are warranted-RCTs with low risk of bias, consistent technical settings, comprehensive assessments, and long follow-up periods. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This systematic review bridges a critical research gap by analysing clinical evidence in the DH-alleviating efficacy of LLLT in comparison with placebo and other in-office desensitising strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of remineralizing agents on collagen matrix pattern, precipitate formation, and dentinal tubule obliteration in eroded cervical dentin. METHODS AND MATERIALS One hundred bovine cervical dentin specimens were previously eroded (0.6% hydrochloric acid, pH 2.3, 5 minutes) and then randomized into five groups (n=20): G1, control (without treatment); G2, Desensibilize Nano P (FGM); G3, MI Paste Plus (Recaldent); G4, Regenerate (NR-5); and G5, Desensibilize KF 2% (FGM). These treatments were applied in four sessions with 7-day intervals. During this period, the samples were subjected to an erosive challenge with orange juice (pH 3.8, 5 minutes). The specimens were analyzed by polarized light microscopy with picrosirius red staining, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). RESULTS The G3 showed a higher concentration of type I collagen than G2 and G5 (p<0.05). The G3 showed greater formation of surface precipitates than that of G1 and G5 (p<0.05). In addition, G4 and G5 showed a greater number of open dentinal tubules than that of G3 (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Calcium phosphate-based remineralizing agents have shown to be a promising alternative treatment for preventing deleterious effects on the eroded dentin collagen matrix. In addition, they promoted precipitate formation and dentinal tubule obliteration on the eroded dentin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of propolis on dentin hypersensitivity reduction. DESIGN The search was conducted in Pubmed, Scopus, Web of science, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature data base (Lilacs), Brazilian Library in Dentistry (BBO), Embase, and Cochrane Library aiming to identify relevant randomized clinical trials that evaluated the effect of propolis on dentin hypersensitivity. The Cochrane Collaboration tool was used for assessing the risk of bias. RESULTS From the total of 63 articles found in the search, six clinical trials were selected. All studies reported that propolis was more effective in reducing hypersensitivity than the placebo. No side effects were observed. CONCLUSIONS Overall, propolis extract can be considered an effective, safe and low-cost alternative to reduce the dentin hypersensitivity.

Abstract
Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is characterized by pain caused by an external stimulus on exposed dentin. Different therapeutic approaches have been proposed to mitigate this problem; however, none of them provide permanent pain relief. In this study, we synthesized and characterized experimental bioactive glasses containing 3.07 mol% SrO or 3.36 mol% K2 O (both equivalent to 5 wt% in the glass), and evaluated their effect on dentin permeability to verify their potential to treat DH. The experimental materials were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction to confirm the respective structures and chemical compositions. The reduction in the hydraulic conductance of dentin was evaluated at the three stages: minimum permeability; maximum permeability (24% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid [EDTA] treatment); and final dentin permeability after treatment with the bioactive glasses. They all promoted a reduction in dentin permeability, with a significant difference for each sample and posttreatment group. Also, a significant reduction in dentin permeability was observed even after a simulated toothbrushing test, demonstrating effective action of these materials against DH. Besides, incorporating 3.07 mol% SrO was a positive factor. Therefore, strontium's desensitizing and re-mineralizing properties can be further exploited in bioactive glasses to promote a synergistic effect to treat DH.

Abstract
The study assessed the bonding performance of three universal adhesives on desensitized dentin with etch-and-rinse mode or self-etch mode after nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp)-based desensitizers application. Simulated sensitive dentin specimens were prepared and separated into four groups: no treatment as the negative control, groups desensitized by Biorepair toothpaste, Dontodent toothpaste, or nHAp paste. Three universal adhesives of All-Bond Universal, Single Bond Universal, and Clearfil Universal Bond with etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode were bonded to the desensitized dentin specimens separately, followed by resin composite build-ups. Micro-tensile bond strength was measured using a micro-tensile tester. The wettability of desensitized dentin was evaluated by the contact angle of the adhesives. Resin infiltration was observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Dentin tubular occlusion and nanoleakage were observed by scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode of each adhesive showed similar bond strength when bonding to nHAp-based desensitized dentin. The dentin surface was partially covered by desensitizers after desensitization. Compared with the self-etch mode, stronger demineralization and more reopened dentin tubules were observed in the etch-and-rinse mode after acid etching; longer resin tags and more nanoleakage in the resin-dentin interface were observed when using the etch-and-rinse mode. When bonding to nHAp-based desensitized dentin with universal adhesives, no significant difference in bond strength was found between self-etch mode or etch-and-rinse mode; while the latter produced more nanoleakage in the resin-dentin interfaces.

Abstract
Conventional therapies have aimed to try to help individuals suffering with dentine hypersensitivity (DH/DHS). A relatively new approach, laser therapy claims to be beneficial while having immediate and long-lasting effect. Therefore, our analysis aims to explore the immediate and 1-month efficacy of near-infrared laser (NIR) therapy in treating dentinal hypersensitivity. A systematic literature search conducted in databases, and analysis was undertaken utilizing a meta-analysis approach. Randomized controlled clinical trials comparing near-infrared lasers and placebo/no treatment in patients (> 18 years) were included. The risk of bias for included studies was assessed using Cochrane RoB tool (for randomized studies). Random effects meta-analyses model of standardized mean differences and 95% confidence intervals were performed using RevMan 5.4 software. A comprehensive electronic and manual search yielded a total of 1081 potential articles. Following the implementation of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 6 studies were included in the analysis. Near-infrared laser therapy led to statistical significant reduction in immediate and 1-month follow-up VAS (visual analog scale) scores compared to placebo/no treatment (p < 0.05). Statistical heterogeneity across the studies was high (I2-96%). The findings suggest that near-infrared laser therapy does have a significant immediate effect in reducing dentine hypersensitivity compared to placebo/no treatment. Furthermore, this effect is not diminished and endured at 1-month follow-up.

Abstract
Introduction Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) adversely affects quality of life by impairing the ability to eat and drink certain foods, therefore, should be addressed promptly with a contingency plan that includes initial treatment with a noninvasive prophylactic home care approach, followed by in-office treatment if desired result is not achieved. Aim The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of four different pastes containing 5% NovaMin (Sensodyne Repair and Protect®), Propolis (Phytoshield Propolis®), 5% potassium nitrate (Sensodyne®), and 8% arginine (Colgate Sensitive Pro Relief®) based toothpastes in the treatment of DH. Materials and Methods One hundred dentin slices were cut from the crown section of molars. Etching with 37% orthophosphoric acid was done to open the tubules. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) study was done to ensure that the tubules are opened. The dentin specimens were divided into four groups: Group 1 -5% NovaMin, Group 2 - Propolis, Group 3 - 5% potassium nitrate, and Group 4 - 8% arginine. Samples were brushed for 2 min twice daily with a soft toothbrush for 15 days and were stored in distilled water. The samples were rinsed under running water to remove the toothpaste. The SEM was performed to check the obliteration of tubules. Results 5% NovaMin group showed more completely occluded dentinal tubules when compared to other groups. The differences among all the groups were statistically significant (P ≤ 0.05). Conclusion In the present study, all materials, NovaMin, Propolis, potassium nitrate, and arginine, were effective in occluding dentinal tubules but NovaMin appeared most proficient in occluding tubules, followed by arginine, potassium nitrate, and Propolis. Topical NovaMin is an upcoming agent demonstrating desensitization and remineralization properties.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this study was to investigate and compare the effectiveness of several toothpastes containing nanohydroxyapatite (nano-HAP) to relieve dentin hypersensitivity (DHS) with that of a commercial desensitizing dentifrice containing calcium sodium phosphosilicate (CSPS). Materials and methods In this double-blind, randomized, parallel-group clinical trial, patients diagnosed with DHS and qualified to participate were randomized into four groups: toothpaste containing 10% nano-HAP (10%nano-HAP), 15% nano-HAP (15%nano-HAP), 10% nano-HAP supplemented with potassium nitrate (KNO3) (10%nano-HAPKN), or CSPS. Subjects’ baseline and post-treatment sensitivities were assessed using visual analog scale (VAS) after the application of ice-cold and air stimuli. Subjects used their assigned toothpaste for routine toothbrushing twice daily. Post-treatment sensitivity was assessed every 2 or 8 weeks. Mean change in VAS (mm) from baseline at each time point were compared using random-intercept, mixed-model analysis and Duncan test (P < 0.05). Results With either air or cold stimulus, VAS indicated a significant (P < 0.001) reduction from baseline DHS at each time point with all test toothpastes. Among the nano-HAP toothpastes, 15%nano-HAP and 10%nano-HAPKN were consistent in DHS reduction with both stimuli. With either stimuli, the CSPS did not significantly differ from 15%nano-HAP and 10%nano-HAPKN at any time point. Conclusions Toothpaste containing nano-HAP (10 or 15%) alone or supplemented with KNO3 was as effective as CSPS for relief of DHS symptoms when used at least twice daily.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate obliterating capability and biological performance of desensitizing agents. METHODS 50 dentin blocks were distributed according to the desensitizing agent used (n = 10): Control (Artificial saliva); Ultra EZ (Ultradent); Desensibilize Nano P (FGM); T5-OH Bioactive Glass (Experimental solution); F18 Bioactive Glass (Experimental solution). Desensitizing treatments were performed for 15 days. In addition, specimens were subjected to acid challenge to simulate oral environment demineralizing conditions. Samples were subjected to permeability analysis before and after desensitizing procedures and acid challenge. Cytotoxicity analysis was performed by using Alamar Blue assay and complemented by total protein quantification by Pierce Bicinchoninic Acid assay at 15 min, 24-h and 48-h time points. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy were performed for qualitative analysis. Data of dentin permeability was analyzed by two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey's test. For cytotoxicity, Kruskal-Wallis and Newman-Keuls tests. RESULTS for dentin permeability there was no significant difference among desensitizing agents after treatment, but control group presented highest values (0.131 ± 0.076 Lp). After acid challenge, control group maintained highest values (0.044 ± 0.014 Lp) with significant difference to other groups, except for Desensibilize Nano P (0.037 ± 0.019 Lp). For cytotoxicity, there were no significant differences among groups. CONCLUSION Bioglass-based desensitizers caused similar effects to commercially available products, regarding permeability and dentin biological properties. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE There is no gold standard protocol for dentin sensitivity. The study of novel desensitizing agents that can obliterate dentinal tubules in a faster-acting and long-lasting way may help meet this clinical need.

Abstract
Background The dentin exposure always leads to dentin hypersensitivity and/or caries. Given the dentin’s tubular structure and low mineralization degree, reestablishing an effective biobarrier to stably protect dentin remains significantly challenging. This study reports a versatile dentin surface biobarrier consisting of a mesoporous silica-based epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)/nanohydroxyapatite delivery system and evaluates its stability on the dentinal tubule occlusion and the Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) biofilm inhibition. Materials and Methods The mesoporous delivery system was fabricated and characterized. Sensitive dentin discs were prepared and randomly allocated to three groups: 1, control group; 2, casein phosphopeptide–amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP–ACP) group; and 3, the mesoporous delivery system group. The dentin permeability, dentinal tubule occlusion, acid and abrasion resistance, and S. mutans biofilm inhibition were determined for 1 week and 1 month. The in vitro release profiles of EGCG, Ca, and P were also monitored. Results The mesoporous delivery system held the ability to sustainably release EGCG, Ca, and P and could persistently occlude dentinal tubules with acid and abrasion resistance, reduce the dentin permeability, and inhibit the S. mutans biofilm formation for up to 1 month compared with the two other groups. The system provided prolonged stability to combat oral adverse challenges and served as an effective surface biobarrier to protect the exposed dentin. Conclusion The establishment of the dentin surface biobarrier consisting of a mesoporous delivery system indicates a promising strategy for the prevention and the management of dentin hypersensitivity and caries after enamel loss.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Monolithic zirconia has become widely used for single crowns, with the advantages of minimal tooth reduction and good esthetics. However, clinical studies evaluating the performance of and patient satisfaction with posterior monolithic zirconia crowns are sparse. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the clinical performance of and patient satisfaction with posterior monolithic zirconia crowns. MATERIAL AND METHODS Within a prospective cohort study design, participants were recruited from a university dental clinic if they required 1 posterior monolithic zirconia crown. The clinical performance was evaluated at follow-up appointments 1, 2, and 3 years after insertion. Bleeding on probing and pocket probing depths for the crowned teeth were recorded. Overall patient satisfaction was measured by using a visual analog scale (VAS), and quality of life was measured by using the validated German version of the Oral Health Impact Profile 14 (OHIP-G14). Descriptive statistical methods were applied. Mean values were calculated and compared by using the paired t test (α=.05). RESULTS Thirty participants received a monolithic zirconia crown (14 premolars, 16 molars). One biologic complication (vertical root fracture) was identified at the 1-year follow-up. Three years after insertion, 22 participants could be examined, and the crowns were still in function. The gingival and the periodontal status of the crowned teeth had not changed significantly over the 3 years. After insertion, a significant improvement in patient satisfaction was measured up to 3 years CONCLUSIONS: Posterior monolithic zirconia crowns led to enhanced patient satisfaction up to 3 years after insertion. They provided good middle-term success and offered a promising alternative to conventional metal-ceramic crowns.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the efficacy of a cosmetic aluminium lactate/potassium nitrate/hydroxylapatite toothpaste for the reduction of dentine hypersensitivity (DH) pain as compared to a control toothpaste containing potassium nitrate. METHODS The study was a randomised, examiner-blind, two treatment arm, parallel controlled trial in healthy adults with at least 2 sensitive teeth (Schiff >2). At baseline, immediately after treatment and at 7 and 14 days of twice-daily brushing of the test or control toothpaste the sensitivity of 2 test teeth was measured following iced-water (Schiff and VAS) and tactile (Yeaple probe) stimuli, and a whole mouth plaque score was obtained. Participants also completed a whole-mouth VAS and DHEQ15 quality of life questionnaire at baseline, 7 and 14 days. RESULTS Both toothpastes reduced DH in test teeth, but pain reduction in the test group was significantly better at all timepoints and by all measures (p = 0.005, tooth-level VAS immediately after brushing; p < 0.001 all other comparisons). There was a relative risk reduction of Schiff sensitivity of 55 % immediately after brushing which rose to 81 % after 7 and 88.6 % after 14 days (all p < 0.001). There were no differences in plaque, whole mouth VAS or DHEQ15 scores at any time point. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated the efficacy of an aluminium lactate/potassium nitrate/hydroxylapatite toothpaste compared to a potassium nitrate control toothpaste for the prevention of dentine hypersensitivity both immediately and over a 2 week period. This agent appears to have potential for pain alleviation from the common oral pain condition of DH and further research is warranted. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE DH pain, whilst transient in nature, is arresting in magnitude, affecting quality of life. Daily application of efficacious toothpastes can relieve DH pain however, as yet, there is no gold standard treatment. The results of this study support further investigation of an aluminium lactate/potassium nitrate/hydroxylapatite toothpaste for DH management.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of the incorporation of bioactive nanofibers in desensitizing agents on dentin permeability. Sixty disks of dentin were randomly distributed in four groups (n = 15). Distribution was based on the desensitizing agents, fluoride varnish and self-etching adhesive, and the presence of nanofibers: C (self-etching adhesive Clearfil SE Bond), CN (Clearfil SE Bond with 1% nanofiber), D (Duraphat varnish), and DN (Duraphat varnish with 1% nanofiber). Dentin permeability was determined using hydraulic conductivity. For a qualitative analysis, confocal laser microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were performed. The C group showed the lowest hydraulic conductance (Lp%) (89.33), while the DN group showed the highest Lp% (116.06). No statistical significance was observed in the Lp% values in all groups after the treatment and 6% citric acid challenge (p > 0.239). In the images, the CN group presented a higher superficial and intratubular deposition. In addition, this group presented a more homogeneous dentin surface and wide occlusion of dentinal tubules than the other treatments. Despite there being no statistical differences among the treatments employed, the images showed that the CN group presented a higher surface and intratubular deposition compared to the other treatments, even after the acid challenge.
