Abstract
Background Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), a leading non-governmental organization (NGO), implemented a large-scale Home Fortification (HF) with Micronutrient Powder (MNP) programme from 2013 to 2018 aimed to reduce undernutrition and iron deficiency anemia among children aged below 5 years old. An adequate and timely supply of MNP was crucial for successful implementation of the programme, but very few studies have documented implementers' MNP supply chain experiences. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the barriers and enablers in the MNP supply chain in Bangladesh. Methods We conducted this process evaluation in five rural sub-districts and three urban slums from March 2016 to February 2017. We conducted 15 Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with HF programme personnel, 41 In-depth Interviews (IDIs) with direct HF programme implementers and reviewed relevant documents. We analyzed data using thematic and root-cause analysis approaches. Results Participants reported the barriers in the MNP supply chain included lack of raw materials for MNP production by local manufacturer, political unrest and insufficient transport facilities, a lack of space for MNP buffer stock at BRAC's central warehouse, and coordination gaps between BRAC's national and sub-national level staff. Enablers to each of the barriers mentioned include ensuring buffer stock at all levels, raising separate transport requisition for MNP supply, and recruiting dedicated supply chain officers. Conclusion Concurrent course-corrections based on process evaluation findings improved MNP supply chain performance, resulting in higher MNP sales and coverage. The identified barriers and enablers provide useful insights for similar programs, emphasizing the importance of a resilient and well-managed MNP supply chain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As one of the most cost-effective investments for improving child nutrition, micronutrient powder (MNP) has been widely used in many countries to underpin the Sustainable Development Goals, yet challenges remain regarding its implementation on a large scale. However, few studies have explored the factors that facilitate or impede the implementation process using implementation science theories and frameworks. To address this gap, we adopted the Consolidated Framework of Implementation Research (CFIR) and conducted a systematic review of studies on the implementation barriers to and facilitators of MNP interventions. METHOD Five publication databases, including EMBASE, Medline, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, were searched for studies on the influencing factors of MNP interventions. Based on the CFIR framework, the facilitators and barriers for the MNP program implementation reported in the included studies were extracted and synthesized by five domains: intervention characteristics, outer setting, inner setting, individual characteristics, and process. RESULTS A total of 50 articles were eligible for synthesis. The majority of the studies were conducted in lower-middle-income countries (52%) through the free delivery model (78%). The inner setting construct was the most prominently reported factor influencing implementation, specifically including available resources (e.g., irregular or insufficient MNP supply), structural characteristics (e.g., public-driven community-based approach), and access to information and knowledge (e.g., lack of training for primary-level workers). The facilitators of the engagement of private sectors, external guidelines, and regular program monitoring were also highlighted. On the contrary, monotonous tastes and occasional side effects impede intervention implementation. Additionally, we found that the inner setting had an interrelation with other contributing factors in the MNP program implementation. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that MNP program implementation was prominently influenced by the available resources, organizational structure, and knowledge of both providers and users. Mobilizing local MNP suppliers, engaging public-driven free models in conjunction with market-based channels, and strengthening the training for primary-level health workers could facilitate MNP interventions.

Abstract
Although considerable global initiatives have been undertaken to tackle anaemia, its prevalence continues to be high in sub-Saharan African nations. In Mali specifically, anaemia represents a significant and pressing public health issue. The purpose of the present study was to examine the key risk factors related to anaemia among children aged 6-24 months (younger age group) and 25-59 months (older age group). We used the Mali 2018 Demographic and Health Survey data, collected from 8861 mothers with children under five. Logistic regression was used to assess the risk factors for childhood anaemia. The results suggest that the prevalence of anaemia was 88 % in the younger and 76 % in the older age groups. The risk factors unique to the younger age group were malaria (OR 4⋅05; CI 0⋅95, 11⋅3) and place of residence (OR 0⋅55; CI 0⋅32, 0⋅94), while for the older age group, they were morbidity (OR 1⋅91; CI 1⋅12, 3⋅24), drinking from a bottle (OR 1⋅52; CI 1⋅04, 2⋅22), and micronutrient intake (OR 0⋅61; CI 0⋅40, 0⋅91). Risk factors that significantly contributed to both age groups include breastfeeding, deworming, maternal anaemia, maternal education, and wealth index. Anaemia also varied by region. The widespread prevalence of anaemia can be attributed to a multitude of factors. In addressing this issue, it is imperative to acknowledge the unique characteristics of specific regions and rural areas, where the incidence of anaemia surpasses the national average. Therefore, any intervention efforts should be tailored to the specific needs and challenges of these areas.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Efficacy studies show early nutrition interventions improving infant nutrition status, but understanding caregiver acceptability is required for implementation of such interventions. This systematic review examines caregivers' perceptions of nutrition interventions in young children. DESIGN We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL and PsychINFO from date of online journal inception through December 2020. Interventions included oral (powder/liquid/tablet) and/or intravenous supplementation, food fortification and nutrition counselling. Inclusion criteria included primary research, data presented on caregiver perception and studies published in English. Quality assessment was performed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tool. Studies underwent narrative synthesis using inductive thematic analysis. SETTING No restriction. PARTICIPANTS Caregivers of children under 24 months of age. RESULTS Of 11 798 records identified, thirty-seven publications were included. Interventions included oral supplementation, food fortification and nutrition counselling. Caregivers included mothers (83 %), fathers, grandparents and aunts. Perceptions were gathered through individual interviews, focus group discussions, questionnaires, surveys and ratings. Totally, 89 % of studies noted high acceptability (n 33 most notably increased appetite (n 17). In total, 57 % of studies (n 21) cited low acceptability, commonly from side effects (n 13) such as gastrointestinal issues, appetite loss and stained teeth. CONCLUSIONS Positive perceptions and enthusiasm for interventions were frequently reported. Key to implementation was the increased appetite noted by caregivers. A substantial proportion of studies reported negative perceptions, mainly due to side effects. In future interventions, mitigation and education around common side effects are crucial for acceptability. Understanding both positive and negative caregiver perceptions is important for informing future nutrition interventions and strengthening sustainability and implementation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children under five are the vulnerable population most at risk of being infected with Plasmodium parasites, especially in the Sahel region. Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) recommended by World Health Organization (WHO), has proven to be a highly effective intervention to prevent malaria. Given more deaths reported during the COVID-19 pandemic than in previous years due to the disruptions to essential medical services, it is, therefore, necessary to seek a more coordinated and integrated approach to increasing the pace, coverage and resilience of SMC. Towards this end, fully leverage the resources of major players in the global fight against malaria, such as China could accelerate the SMC process in Africa. METHODS We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Embase for research articles and the Institutional Repository for Information Sharing of WHO for reports on SMC. We used gap analysis to investigate the challenges and gaps of SMC since COVID-19. Through the above methods to explore China's prospective contribution to SMC. RESULTS A total of 68 research articles and reports were found. Through gap analysis, we found that despite the delays in the SMC campaign, 11.8 million children received SMC in 2020. However, there remained some challenges: (1) a shortage of fully covered monthly courses; (2) lack of adherence to the second and third doses of amodiaquine; (3) four courses of SMC are not sufficient to cover the entire malaria transmission season in areas where the peak transmission lasts longer; (4) additional interventions are needed to consolidate SMC efforts. China was certified malaria-free by WHO in 2021, and its experience and expertise in malaria elimination can be shared with high-burden countries. With the potential to join the multilateral cooperation in SMC, including the supply of quality-assured health commodities, know-how transfer and experience sharing, China is expected to contribute to the ongoing scale-up of SMC. CONCLUSIONS A combination of necessary preventive and curative activities may prove beneficial both for targeted populations and for health system strengthening in the long run. More actions are entailed to promote the partnership and China can be one of the main contributors with various roles.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of intervention with Yingyangbao (YYB) on hemoglobin (Hb) and anemia status among infants and young children (IYC) aged 6-23 months (mo) through a large-scale Nutrition Improvement Program for Children in Poor Areas (NIPCPA) in China from 2015 to 2020. Five rounds of cross-sectional surveys were conducted using a stratified and multi-stage probability proportional to size sampling of IYC in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. Multivariable regression analyses were fitted to determine the effectiveness of the YYB intervention on Hb and anemia, respectively. A total of 36,325, 40,027, 43,831, 44,375 and 46,050 IYC aged 6-23 mo were included, and the prevalence of anemia was 29.7%, 26.9%, 24.1%, 21.2% and 18.1% in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, respectively. Compared with the results in 2015, the Hb concentrations significantly improved and anemia prevalence significantly decreased among IYC in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 (p < 0.001). Regression analysis showed that higher YYB consumption was significantly associated with the increment in Hb concentration and reduction in anemia stratified by age group (p < 0.001). The most significant increment in Hb concentration of 2.189 mg/L and the most significant reduction in odds of anemia were observed among IYC aged 12-17 mo who consumed 270 to 359 sachets of YYB (OR: 0.671; 95% CI: 0.627, 0.719; p < 0.001). This study suggests that YYB intervention is a successful public health strategy for reducing the risk of anemia among IYC when delivered through a large-scale NIPCPA in China. It is necessary to continue to advance the program and increase the adherence of YYB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The micronutrient home fortification programs contribute to the prevention of childhood anemia. WHO suggested applying culturally appropriate strategies to implement the micronutrient home fortification programs in various communities. However, there is little knowledge on evidence-based effective diffusion strategies of the micronutrient home fortification programs in multi-ethnic populations. This study aims to examine the diffusion of a micronutrient home fortification program with micronutrient powder (MNP) in a multi-ethnic population by investigating factors associated with being an 'early' or a 'later' adopter of MNP. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study in rural western China. Multistage sampling was used to select children's caregivers in Han, Tibetan, and Yi ethnic communities (N = 570). The diffusion of innovations theory informed the data collection on caregivers' decision process and was applied to classify participants into the MNP adopter categories of 'leaders', 'followers', 'loungers', and 'laggards'. The ordered logistic regression model estimated the factors associated with the MNP adopter categories. RESULTS Caregivers from the Yi ethnic subgroup were likely to adopt MNP relatively late (AOR = 1.67; 95%CI = 1.09, 2.54) compared with Han and Tibetan ethnic subgroups. Caregivers with more knowledge regarding the MNP feeding method (AOR = 0.71; 95%CI = 0.52, 0.97) and those with stronger self-efficacy in adopting MNP (AOR = 0.85; 95%CI = 0.76, 0.96) were more likely to adopt MNP earlier than others. The following messages and channels also tend to make caregivers adopt MNP earlier: hearing that 'MNP was free' from villagers (AOR = 0.45; 95%CI = 0.20, 0.98), and learning 'MNP feeding method' from township doctors (AOR = 0.16; 95%CI = 0.06, 0.48). CONCLUSIONS Disparities in adopting MNP existing among different ethnic groups require more effective diffusion strategies in disadvantaged minority ethnic groups. Enhancing self-efficacy in adopting MNP and knowledge on feeding method of MNP have the potential to make caregivers adopt MNP earlier. Peer networks and township doctors can be effective agencies to facilitate the diffusion and adoption of MNP.

Nutrition experts point to the importance of a multipronged approach to address high stunting rates in rural areas. This can include nutrition-specific and -sensitive interventions, such as the provision of micronutrient powder, eggs, and chlorine, and nutrition training to improve feeding practices. In 2018, an agricultural nongovernmental organisation initiated a multipronged approach as part of a randomised trial. However, adherence to a programme with so many components can be challenging for participants. The aim of this study is to understand which factors are associated with high adherence in complex multifaceted nutrition-sensitive agricultural programmes. We used a mixed method approach in which we used bivariate and multivariable analyses to estimate the relationship between child and caregiver demographic factors with product adherence. We analyzed data from six focus groups and 120 feedback sessions on barriers to product adherence. We found that the age and sex of the child did not influence product adherence, but caregivers were more likely to adhere to all products if they were not the child's biological mother (most often grandmothers) (0.28 higher adherence score; p < 0.001) and if caregivers were older (0.34 higher adherence score, p < 0.001). A higher monthly training attendance, combining product distribution and interactive training, predicted stronger product adherence. Participants noted that adherence was supported by the early demonstration of positive results, regular reminders, interactive trainings, and the encouragement of family members. These findings underscore the importance of combining product distribution with training and include potentially targeting grandmothers and other caregivers who may demonstrate higher product adherence.

Abstract
Objective To explore the status quo and influencing factors of feeding behaviors of micronutrient powders (MNP), or yingyangbao in Pinyin, the Chinese Romanization system, of baby caregivers in remote rural areas of Sichuan Province. Methods In 2019, caregivers of babies aged 6 to 24 months from 6 counties of Sichuan Province were selected as the respondents of the survey through a multistage cluster random sampling method. Data concerning the baby caregivers' attitude of behavior, subjective norms, behavioral intention, and feeding behaviors about MNP feeding were collected with a questionnaire through a structured interview. Based on the theory of reasoned action, a structural equation model was constructed to explore the influencing factors of feeding behaviors. Results A total of 1002 valid samples were included in the study. The effective feeding rate of MNP among the baby caregivers was 55.49%. The results of model analysis suggested that attitude of behavior ( β direct=0.212, 95% CI: 0.105-0.327), subjective norm ( β direct=0.123, 95% CI: 0.016-0.228), and behavioral intention ( β direct=0.162, 95% CI: 0.093-0.224) could have a significant direct impact on MNP feeding behaviors. Behavior attitude ( β indirect=0.044, 95% CI: 0.023-0.073) and subjective norms ( β indirect=0.018, 95% CI: 0.001-0.040) could have a significant indirect impact on MNP feeding behaviors through the intermediary of behavioral intention. Among the three theoretical elements, attitude of behavior had the largest total effect on the feeding behavior ( β total=0.256, 95% CI: 0.148-0.366). Conclusion The effective feeding rate of MNP among baby caregivers in remote rural areas of Sichuan Province is low. The attitude of behavior and subjective norms of caregivers may have a direct impact on their feeding behavior, and both attitude of behavior and subjective norms can have an indirect impact on the feeding behavior through the intermediary of behavioral intention. The influence of attitude of behavior attitude on feeding behavior is greater than that of subjective norms. Future intervention plans for promoting effective MNP feeding should incorporate health education for baby caregivers and their important social relations. Thus, baby caregivers' attitude and willingness for MNP feeding will be strengthened and the effective feeding rate of MNP will be improved accordingly.

Abstract
Beneficiary and local stakeholder participation is an essential element to the success of community-based nutrition interventions. We sought to define active participation and review the available evidence on beneficiary and local stakeholder participation in community-based nutrition interventions in Africa. From reviewing the literature, we provide a reflective assessment on the process and findings. Participation falls on a continuum of community involvement from passive (no real involvement) to empowerment and community ownership (full active involvement). However, we found a clear gap in the research on defining active participation and identifying what constitutes active participation on behalf of beneficiaries and local stakeholders. However, progress was found; evidence included the use of participatory methods to engage beneficiaries and local stakeholders in the assessment and design phase. Beneficiary and local stakeholder participation in delivering interventions has moved forward with quantitative measures from process evaluation and implementation science. Research has started on the extent of beneficiary engagement (as recipients) and connecting this to outcomes. Evaluation has benefited from qualitative inquiry with insights from participants on engagement itself, and the barriers and facilitators to engagement. Yet questions remain in each study phase around defining and quantifying active participation and in understanding the personal, social, and motivational elements of active participation. We offer a simple framework to stimulate thought and commitment to research on participation in community-based nutrition interventions.

Abstract
Background High adherence and proper usage of micronutrient powder (MNP) influence child nutritional outcomes, yet few studies explore the role of delivery patterns. This study explores the association between MNP delivery patterns and MNP feeding behaviors among Han and minority caregivers in rural Western China. Methods In August 2019, a total of 1021 caregiver-child pairs were selected through a four-stage cluster sampling process. A cross-sectional survey collected information on caregiver demographics, MNP delivery patterns (channel and frequency), and MNP feeding behaviors (proper usage and adherence). Using logistic regression, we examined which delivery channels and delivery frequencies were associated with proper usage and high adherence. Results The results indicated that minority caregivers had lower levels of proper MNP usage than did Han caregivers (89.2%), with Tibetan caregivers’ reporting the lowest rates of adherence (32.6%). Logistic regression revealed that that township-based channel was significantly correlated with proper usage among Tibetan and Yi caregivers (Odds Ratio, OR = 2.0, p < 0.01; and OR = 3.5, p < 0.001). Overall, the township-based and home-visit channels were significantly correlated with high adherence (OR = 1.7 and OR = 2.3, respectively; p < 0.001); delivery frequency was significantly correlated with high adherence (2 months: OR = 2.2, p < 0.001 and ≤ 1 month: OR = 3.5, p < 0.001) but not correlated with proper usage among the whole sample and individual ethnic groups. Conclusions In conclusion, the study finds evidence of a correlation between MNP delivery channel and both proper usage and high adherence as well as a correlation between MNP delivery frequency and high adherence. Abstract
Sex differences are an important consideration when researching and establishing policies for nutrition and optimal health. For women's health, there are important physiologic, neurologic, and hormonal distinctions throughout the lifecycle that impact nutritional needs. Distinct from those for men, these nutritional needs must be translated into appropriate nutrition policy that aims to not only avoid overt nutritional deficiency, but also to promote health and minimize risk for chronic disease. Through a series of webinars, scientific experts discussed the advances in the understanding of the unique nutritional needs, challenges and opportunities of the various life stages for women across the life course and identified emerging nutritional interventions that may be beneficial for women. Nevertheless, there is concern that existing nutrition policy intended for women's health is falling short with examples of programs that are focused more on delivering calories than achieving optimal nutrition. To be locally effective, targeted nutrition needs to offer different proposals for different cultural, socio-economic, and geographic communities, and needs to be applicable at all stages of growth and development. There must be adequate access to nutritious foods, and the information to understand and implement proven nutritional opportunities. Experts provided recommendations for improvement of current entitlement programs that will address accessibility and other social and environmental issues to support women properly throughout the lifecycle.

Abstract
Adherence to home fortification of foods with multiple micronutrient powders (MNPs) is an essential indicator of effective implementation of MNP programmes. A meta‐analysis was conducted to evaluate the high adherence rate (HAR) to MNPs and further investigate the factors that influence HAR. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CAB Abstracts, MEDLINE (OVID), Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang and VP, from the date of database inception to 9 November 2020. We included peer‐reviewed observational studies that investigated adherence to MNPs. Data on the HAR to MNPs and influencing factors on HAR were extracted and then pooled together. A total of 10 studies were included. The pooled HAR to MNPs was 63.28% (51.12%–74.64%). Among HARs, rates were higher in middle‐income countries (65.21%) than low‐income countries (55.23%). Parental age over 30 years (maternal age OR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.08–1.44; paternal age OR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.04–1.32), children aged 18–36 months (OR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.12–1.88), maternal educational attainment of college or above (OR = 1.38, 95% CI:1.10–1.73), caregiver with the perception that other mothers use MNPs (OR = 1.52, 95% CI:1.19–1.95), caregiver being aware of the importance of iron (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.18–1.71), caregiver having correct knowledge of MNPs (OR = 1.36, 95% CI:1.19–1.57) and caregiver reporting children have no side effects from MNPs (OR = 2.77, 95% CI: 2.46–3.11) were contributing factors to high adherence to MNPs. The overall HAR to MNPs was relatively low; hence, effective and trusted communication channels need to be established, along with more thorough dissemination of the knowledge of MNPs to caregivers, to improve MNPs adherence rates, especially in low‐income countries.

Abstract
Gaps in complementary feeding practices hinder the use of multiple micronutrients powder (MNP) in Rutsiro district in Rwanda. Successful MNP program implementation requires uninterrupted availability and accessibility to the product, as well as greater understanding of health benefits of the MNP. The World Health Organization recommends point-of-use fortification with multiple micronutrients powder (MNP) for foods consumed by children aged 6–23 months in populations where anemia prevalence among children under 2 years or under 5 years of age is 20% or higher. In Rwanda, anemia affects 37% of children under 5 years. The MNP program was implemented to address anemia, but research on factors affecting the implementation of the MNP program is limited. We conducted a mixed-methods study to examine the factors influencing access to and use of MNP among mothers (N=379) in Rutsiro district, northwest Rwanda. Inductive content analysis was used for qualitative data. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine factors associated with the use of MNP. Qualitative results indicated that the unavailability of MNP supplies and distribution issues were major barriers to accessing MNP. Factors influencing the use of MNP included mothers' perceptions of side effects and health benefits of MNP, as well as inappropriate complementary feeding practices. Mothers of older children (aged 12–23 months) were more likely to use MNP than those of younger children (aged 6–11 months) (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]=3.63, P<.001). Mothers whose children participated in the supplementary food program were nearly 3 times more likely to use MNP than those whose children had never participated in the program (aOR=2.84, P=.001). Increasing household hunger score was significantly associated with lower odds of using MNP (aOR=0.80, P=.038). Mechanisms to monitor MNP supply and program implementation need to be strengthened to ensure mothers have access to the product. MNP program implementers should address gaps in complementary feeding practices and ensure mothers have access to adequate complementary foods.

Abstract
Fortification with multiple micronutrient powder has been proposed as a public health intervention able to reduce micronutrient deficiencies in children. Our objective was to compare the effectiveness of fortification with multiple micronutrient powder with drug supplementation in the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency and anaemia. This was a cluster trial with anemic and non-anaemic children between six and 42 months old, in randomization data. Non anaemic children received fortification with multiple micronutrient powder or standard drug supplementation of ferrous sulfate associated with folic acid in a prevention dose. Anaemic children who were randomized to receive multiple micronutrient powder also received the recommended iron complementation for anaemia treatment. A total of 162 children were evaluated. The prevalence of anaemia decreased from 13.58 to 1.85%. Iron deficiency decreased from 21.74% to 7.89% (by serum ferritin) and iron deficiency decreased from 66.81 to 38.27% (by soluble transferrin receptor). No difference was identified between interventions for hemoglobin (p = 0.142), serum ferritin (p = 0.288), and soluble transferrin receptor (p = 0.156). Fortification with multiple micronutrient powder was effective in preventing iron deficiency and anaemia in children aged six to 48 months. In anaemic children; it was necessary to supplement the dose of multiple micronutrient powder with ferrous sulfate.

Abstract
Background Micronutrient deficiencies affect many children in low-income settings due primarily to over-reliance on complementary foods low in nutrients. Home-fortification (HF) could improve children’s diet quality in these settings. The Ghana Health Service, supported by UNICEF, integrated the pilot Micronutrient Powder Initiative (MPI) into Child Welfare Clinic (CWC) services in four districts (Tain, Tolon, Talensi, and Ho West), whereby micronutrient powder (MNP) is supplied for HF for children aged 6–23 months attending CWCs. This study’s main aim was to identify the facilitators, barriers and “lessons learned” after 2 years of program implementation. Methods This was a qualitative cross-sectional study. MNP distributed and children enrolled were obtained from program records. Primary data were collected from November to December 2019 and included, by district: interviews with senior program staff; key informant interviews and focus group discussion with caregivers in each of 6 sub-districts; and discussions workshop with frontline staff from at least 10 health facilities. Besides field notes, all interactions were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Qualitative data were analyzed using NVivo10. Results The MPI remains on-going, with about 2.5 million MNP sachets distributed to nearly 30,000 children within 90 district-months. Caregivers generally accept the MNP; reported positive responses in children include: “increased appetite”, “less frequent illnesses, “increased energy/strength”, “increased weight”, and “walking independently relatively early”. Main facilitators are: generally regular MNP availability; increased patronage of CWC services; various contact points for supplying MNPs; fairly strong social mobilization strategy; good integration of MPI with CWC services; “one-on-one” counselling for caregivers reporting side effects; and tracing caregivers to address concerns and monitor adherence. Main barriers are: lack of counselling materials; caregivers’ suspicions towards the program; absence of refresher training for frontline workers; and perceived MNP side-effects. Key lessons learned are: incorporating MNPs into CWC services is feasible, acceptable, and could reduce child micronutrient deficiencies in program districts; and MPI’s success requires stronger community sensitization, equipping frontline workers to advise caregivers and manage side-effects, and consciously identifying and managing logistical challenges. Conclusion Further research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of the MPI in reducing micronutrient deficiencies among 6–23-months-olds in Ghana.

Abstract
Home fortification with micronutrient powders (MNP) has been shown to reduce anaemia, with high overall acceptability and adherence, but there is limited evidence from West Africa. Around 80% of children younger than 5 years are anaemic in Mali, and new interventions are needed. This paper reports on the adherence and acceptability of a community‐led MNP intervention targeting children aged 6–59 months in Southern Mali. The MNP were delivered by a multidisciplinary group of community volunteers using community‐based preschools, cooking demonstrations, and traditional communication networks to promote MNP, nutrition, hygiene, and child stimulation. The MNP were delivered alongside early childhood development interventions and seasonal malaria chemoprevention. Adherence and acceptability were evaluated through two cross‐sectional surveys in 2014 and 2016 and a qualitative evaluation in 2015. Over 80% of parents reported ever having given MNP to their child, with 65% having given MNP for four or more days in the last week. Likely contributors to uptake include: perceived positive changes in the children following MNP use, the selection of a food vehicle that was already commonly given to children (morning porridge or bouillie) and the community driven, decentralized and integrated delivery approach. These findings support recommendations from recent reviews of MNP implementation to use community‐based delivery approaches and behaviour change components.
