Abstract
Use of hormonal contraception is important to consider as a risk or protective factor in the development of cardiovascular disease. Prior reports of short and long-term effects of hormonal contraception on cardiovascular disease allude to its potential for immediate and delayed cardiovascular effects, but the nature of direct early cardiovascular changes as the result of hormonal contraception use remains understudied. This cross-sectional data analysis add-on study compared differences in cardiovascular function of naturally cycling women (n = 90) and women using oral contraceptive pills (n = 35) at rest and in response to physiological breathing challenges that activated the sympathetic (paced sighing) or parasympathetic (slow paced breathing) nervous systems. Results showed women using oral contraception had elevated resting systolic blood pressure as well as increased stroke volume and shortened pulse transit time (i.e., vasoconstriction) relative to naturally cycling women. Despite resting differences, both groups responded similarly to breathing challenges. Elevated resting blood pressure and altered sympathetic control, even at preclinical levels, may increase physiological wear-and-tear, particularly if hormonal contraceptive use continues over long periods of time. These findings are particularly compelling considering the youth and health of the current sample.

Abstract
Introduction Collegiate coaches and integrative support staff often utilize pre-season as a brief and intense training period to prepare athletes technically, tactically, and physiologically, to meet the demands of competition during a soccer season. This study sought to examine the dose-response from performing on-field soccer activities during a four-week pre-season period in female collegiate soccer players, and if the magnitude in response was associated with accumulated exercise stress. Methods A total of twenty-seven healthy female soccer players training as part of a collegiate soccer program volunteered to participate in this two-year longitudinal study. Data collection commenced prior to the start of each pre-season period, at the beginning of August, and was completed at the beginning of September, when pre-season ended. Data collection periods were separated by a 31-day period. Indices of cardiovascular function, anthropometry, and athletic performance were examined during each data collection period. Internal and external measures of accumulated exercise stress were recorded using the Polar Team Pro® system. Results When comparing the beginning to the end of pre-season, significant improvements were observed in body fat (%) [24.2 ± 6.0 "vs." 23.3 ± 5.6, p = 0.001], heart rate variability (rMSSD) [51.8 ± 25.1 "vs." 67.9 ± 34.6 ms, p = 0.002], resting heart (bpm) [73.8 ± 12.1 "vs." 64.3 ± 8.8, p = 0.001] and cardiorespiratory performance (YoYo IRTL-1) [925.8 ± 272.8 "vs." 1,062.6 ± 223.3 m, p = 0.001]. Significant reductions in musculoskeletal performance were observed through vertical jump height (cm) [24.9 ± 23.7, p = 0.04]. Change in the end of pre-season body weight (kg) was significantly associated with accumulated accelerations and decelerations [r ≥ 0.49, p = 0.01]. End of pre-season change in cardiorespiratory performance was significantly associated with both accumulated training load (au) and TRIMP (au) [r ≥ 0.63, p = 0.01]. Discussion In conclusion, performing a four-week pre-season period, involving only on-field training, can promote positive and significant adaptations in anthropometry, cardiovascular function, and athletic performance measures in female collegiate soccer players. The magnitudes of these adaptations were associated with both internal and external measures of accumulated exercise stress.

Abstract
Hormonal changes around ovulation divide the menstrual cycle (MC) into the follicular and luteal phases. In addition, oral contraceptives (OCs) have active (higher hormone) and placebo phases. Although there are some MC-based effects on various physiological outcomes, we found these differences relatively subtle and difficult to attribute to specific hormones, as estrogen and progesterone fluctuate rather than operating in a complete on/off pattern as observed in cellular or preclinical models often used to substantiate human data. A broad review reveals that the differences between the follicular and luteal phases and between OC active and placebo phases are not associated with marked differences in exercise performance and appear unlikely to influence muscular hypertrophy in response to resistance exercise training. A systematic review and meta-analysis of substrate oxidation between MC phases revealed no difference between phases in the relative carbohydrate and fat oxidation at rest and during acute aerobic exercise. Vascular differences between MC phases are also relatively small or nonexistent. Although OCs can vary in composition and androgenicity, we acknowledge that much more work remains to be done in this area; however, based on what little evidence is currently available, we do not find compelling support for the notion that OC use significantly influences exercise performance, substrate oxidation, or hypertrophy. It is important to note that the study of females requires better methodological control in many areas. Previous studies lacking such rigor have contributed to premature or incorrect conclusions regarding the effects of the MC and systemic hormones on outcomes. While we acknowledge that the evidence in certain research areas is limited, the consensus view is that the impact of the MC and OC use on various aspects of physiology is small or nonexistent.

Abstract
The main goal of this manuscript is to provide an extensive literature review and analysis of certain biomarkers, which are frequently used to identify stress, anxiety, and other emotions, leading to potential solutions for the monitoring of mental wellness using wearable technologies. It is possible to see the impacts of several biomarkers in detecting stress levels and their effectiveness with an investigation into the literature on this subject. Biofeedback training has demonstrated some psychological effects, such as a reduction in anxiety and self-control enhancement. This survey demonstrates backed up by evidence that wearable devices are assistive in providing health and mental wellness solutions. Because physical activity tracing would reduce the stress stressors, which affect the subject's body, therefore, it would also affect the mental activity and would lead to a reduction in cognitive mental load.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate within-cycle differences in nocturnal heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) in naturally menstruating women (NM) and women using combined hormonal contraceptives (CU) or progestin-only hormonal contraceptives (PU). METHODS Physically active participants were recruited into three groups: NM ( n = 19), CU ( n = 11), and PU ( n = 12). Participants' HR and HRV (with Bodyguard 2 HRV monitor) and blood hormones were monitored during one menstrual cycle (MC) (NM group) or for 4 wk (CU and PU groups). Estradiol, progesterone, and luteinizing hormone were analyzed from fasting blood samples collected four times in the NM (M1 = bleeding, M2 = follicular phase, M3 = ovulation, and M4 = luteal phase) and PU groups (M1 = lowest E 2 , M2 = M1 + 7 d, M3 = M1 + 14 d, and M4 = M1 + 21 d) and twice in the CU group (active and inactive pill phases). After every blood sample, nightly HR and HRV were recorded and examined as an average from two nights. RESULTS Hormonal concentrations differed ( P < 0.05) between MC phases in the NM and PU groups, but not ( P ≥ 0.116) between the active and the inactive phases in the CU group. In the NM and PU groups, some of the HRV values were higher, whereas in the NM group, HR was lower during M2 compared with M3 ( P < 0.049) and M4 ( P < 0.035). In the CU group, HRV values ( P = 0.014-0.038) were higher, and HR was lower ( P = 0.038) in the inactive phase compared with the first week of the active phase. CONCLUSIONS The MC and the hormonal cycle phases influence autonomic nervous system balance, which is reflected in measurements of nocturnal HR and HRV. This should be considered when monitoring recovery in physically active individuals.

Abstract
(1) Background: High-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) is an essential ultradian rhythm that reflects the activity of the PNS to decelerate the heart. It is unknown how HF-HRV varies across the menstrual cycle (MC), and whether progesterone mediates this potential variation. (2) Methods: We enrolled 33 women in the study to attend eight clinic visits across the MC, during which we measured their resting HF-HRV and collected samples for the analysis of luteinizing hormone (LH) and progesterone. We realigned the study data according to the serum LH surge to the early follicular, mid-follicular, periovulatory, early luteal, mid-luteal and late luteal subphases. (3) Results: Pairwise comparisons between all the subphases showed significant differences between the early follicular and periovulatory subphases (β = 0.9302; p ≤ 0.001) and between the periovulatory and early luteal subphases (β = -0.6955; p ≤ 0.05). Progesterone was positively associated with HF-HRV in the early follicular subphase but not the periovulatory subphase (p ≤ 0.05). (4) Conclusions: The present study shows a significant drop in HF-HRV in the anticipation of ovulation. Further research in this area is critical given the marked cardiovascular disease mortality in women.

Abstract
Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Epidemiological studies have revealed these illnesses to be highly comorbid, particularly among women. In the current study, we explored associations between indices of cardiovascular health, PTSD, and depression among a sample of trauma-exposed individuals assigned female at birth.Methods: Participants were N = 49 individuals without CVD who reported lifetime Criterion A trauma exposure. Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) were collected during a 5-minute resting period. Symptoms of CVD (e.g. extremity pain and swelling, shortness of breath), PTSD, and depression were assessed, along with an exploratory measure of anhedonia.Results: Trauma exposure was positively correlated with systolic BP (r = .32, p = .029) and diastolic BP (r = .30, p = .040). The number of reported CVD symptoms was positively correlated with symptoms of PTSD (r = .41, p = .004), depression (r = .40, p = .005) and anhedonia (r = .38, p = .007). CVD symptoms were also significantly associated with PTSD (β = .41, t = 2.43, p = .023), depression (β = .40, t = 2.76, p = .009), and anhedonia (β = .38, t = 2.51, p = .017) after controlling for age and trauma exposure. These associations were not moderated by HF-HRV in our sample.Conclusions: Our results support the association between PTSD and depressive symptoms and worse cardiovascular functioning among an often-overlooked population that is particularly vulnerable to these illnesses. Future studies should investigate residual impacts of PTSD and depression treatment on CVD risk among trauma-exposed individuals, particularly women.

Abstract
Introduction As the number of female athletes competing rises globally, training methodologies should reflect sex differences across critical metrics of adaptation to training. Surrogate markers of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) used for monitoring training load are heart rate variability (HRV) and resting heart rate (RHR). The aim was to investigate ovarian hormone effects on standard recovery metrics (HRV, RHR, respiratory rate (RR) and sleep duration) across a large population of female athletes. Methods A retrospective study analysed 362 852 days of data representing 13 535 menstrual cycles (MC) from 4594 respondents (natural MC n=3870, BC n=455, progestin-only n=269) for relationships and/or differences between endogenous and exogenous ovarian hormones on ANS. Results HRV and return to baseline (recovery) decreased as resting HR and RR increased (p<0.001) from the early follicular to the late luteal phase of the MC. Patterning was paradoxical across phases for users of combined hormonal contraception (BC) as compared with the patterning of the MC. HRV and recovery start elevated and drop off quickly during the withdrawal bleed, rising through the active pill weeks (p<0.001). Progestin-only users had similar patterning as the MC. The relationship between normalised recovery and previous day strain is modulated by birth control type. BC exhibited steeper declines in recovery with additional strain-normalised recovery decreases by an additional 0.0055±0.00135 (p<0.001) per unit of strain; with no significant difference between MC and progestin-only (p=0.19). Conclusion The patterning of ANS modulation from ovarian hormones is significantly different between naturally cycling women and those on BC, with the patterning dependent on the type of contraception used.

Abstract
Female athletes have garnered considerable attention in the last few years as more and more women participate in sports events. However, despite the well-known repercussions of female sex hormones, few studies have investigated the specificities of elite female athletes. In this review, we present the current but still limited data on how normal menstrual phases, altered menstrual phases, and hormonal contraception affect both physical and cognitive performances in these elite athletes. To examine the implicated mechanisms, as well as the potential performances and health risks in this population, we then take a broader multidisciplinary approach and report on the causal/reciprocal relationships between hormonal status and mental and physical health in young (18-40 years) healthy females, both trained and untrained. We thus cover the research on both physiological and psychological variables, as well as on the Athlete Biological Passport used for anti-doping purposes. We consider the fairly frequent discrepancies and summarize the current knowledge in this new field of interest. Last, we conclude with some practical guidelines for eliciting improvements in physical and cognitive performance while minimizing the health risks for female athletes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study autonomic responses to postural changes in concussed adolescents. The influence of sex was also studied. DESIGN Longitudinal cohort observational study. PARTICIPANTS Concussed adolescents (CONC; n = 65; 26 male adolescents; age 15 ± 1 years, range = 12-18 years) and a control (CTRL) group of nonconcussed adolescents of similar age and sport (CTRL; n = 54; 29 male adolescents; age 14 ± 1 years, range = 12-18 years). INTERVENTIONS Concussed participants were monitored through 6 weekly visits throughout usual physician care. Control participants underwent 2 visits separated by at least 1 week to account for intrapersonal variation in testing measures. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Heart rate variability as the root mean square of successive differences in R-R intervals (RMSSD), heart rate (HR), and blood pressure [mean arterial pressure (MAP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP)] were measured in supine, sitting, and standing postures. RESULTS A mixed analysis of variance revealed a group × sex × posture interaction (P = 0.04) where seated values of RMSSD were less in concussed female participants versus control female participants (42 ± 4 vs 61 ± 7 ms; P = 0.01; Mann-Whitney rank test). Compared with CTRL, CONC exhibited increased pretesting seated DBP (69 ± 1 vs 74 ± 1 mm Hg; P < 0.01), MAP (83 ± 1 vs 86 ± 1 mm Hg; P = 0.02), and baseline seated HR (72 ± 1 vs 77 ± 2 bpm; P = 0.03). Values of DBP (P = 0.03) and MAP (P < 0.01) improved at clinical discharge, whereas the RMSSD in female participants did not (P > 0.5). Data are mean ± SEM. CONCLUSIONS A modest reduction in female cardiac autonomic regulation was observed during seated postures. Alterations in seated concussed DBP and MAP, but not RMSSD, resolved at clinical discharge (median = 37 days). The results indicate that, in adolescents, concussion may impair cardiovagal function in a sex- and posture-dependent manner. The findings also suggest that BP metrics, but not RMSSD, are associated with clinical concussion recovery.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the influence of different hormonal profiles on the cardiorespiratory response to exercise in endurance-trained females. METHODS Forty-seven eumenorrheic females, 38 low-dose monophasic oral contraceptive (OC) users and 13 postmenopausal women, all of them endurance-trained, participated in this study. A DXA scan, blood sample tests and a maximal aerobic test were performed under similar low-sex hormone levels: early follicular phase for the eumenorrheic females; withdrawal phase for the OC group and at any time for postmenopausal women. Cardiorespiratory variables were measured at resting and throughout the maximal aerobic test (ventilatory threshold 1, 2 and peak values). Heart rate (HR) was continuously monitored with a 12-lead ECG. Blood pressure (BP) was measured with an auscultatory method and a calibrated mercury sphygmomanometer. Expired gases were measured breath-by-breath with the gas analyser Jaeger Oxycon Pro. RESULTS One-way ANCOVA reported a lower peak HR in postmenopausal women (172.4 ± 11.7 bpm) than in eumenorrheic females (180.9 ± 10.6 bpm) (p = 0.024). In addition, postmenopausal women exhibited lower VO2 (39.1 ± 4.9 ml/kg/min) compared to eumenorrheic females (45.1 ± 4.4 ml/kg/min) in ventilatory threshold 2 (p = 0.009). Nonetheless, respiratory variables did not show differences between groups at peak values. Finally, no differences between OC users and eumenorrheic females' cardiorespiratory response were observed in endurance-trained females. CONCLUSIONS Cardiorespiratory system is impaired in postmenopausal women due to physiological changes caused by age and sex hormones' decrement. Although these alterations appear not to be fully compensated by exercise, endurance training could effectively mitigate them. In addition, monophasic OC pills appear not to impact cardiorespiratory response to an incremental running test in endurance-trained females.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to analyse the acute effects of set configuration on cardiac parasympathetic modulation and blood pressure (BP) after a whole-body resistance training (RT) session. METHODS Thirty-two participants (23 men and 9 women) performed one control (CON) and two RT sessions differing in the set configuration but with the same intensity (15RM load), volume (200 repetitions) and total resting time (360 s between sets for each exercise and 3 min between exercises): a long set configuration (LSC: 4 sets of 10 repetitions with 2 resting minutes) and a short set configuration session (SSC, 8 sets of 5 repetitions with 51 resting seconds). Heart rate variability, baroreflex sensitivity, the low frequency of systolic blood pressure oscillations (LFSBP), BP and lactatemia were evaluated before and after the sessions and mechanical performance was evaluated during exercise. RESULTS LSC induced greater reductions on cardiac parasympathetic modulation versus SSC after the session and the CON (p < 0.001 to p = 0.024). However, no LFSBP and BP significant changes were observed. Furthermore, LSC caused a higher lactate production (p < 0.001) and velocity loss (p ≤ 0.001) in comparison with SSC. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that SSC attenuates the reduction of cardiac parasympathetic modulation after a whole-body RT, improving the mechanical performance and decreasing the glycolytic involvement, without alterations regarding vascular tone and BP.

Abstract
The authors compared the linear and nonlinear heart rate variability dynamics from rest through maximal exercise in postmenopausal women who trained at either moderate or high intensities. The outcome variables included the RR triangular index, TINN, SD1, SD2, SD1/SD2, DFA α1, DFA α2, and α1/α2. Maximal exercise reduced SD1, SD2, DFA α1, DFA α2, α1/α2, RRTri, and TINN in both groups and increased SD1/SD2 (p < .05). Two minutes of active recovery produced significant increases in SD1, SD2, DFA α1, and TINN, compared with exercise in both groups (p < .0001). There was also a significant main effect between groups for RRTri during exercise recovery, with the moderate group achieving higher levels (p < .04). The authors have shown that both moderate and vigorous exercise training can lead to a healthy response to maximal exercise and recovery, with the moderate group having a slightly improved recovery in the triangular index.

Abstract
Purpose: To examine the association between day-to-day resting cardiac parasympathetic variability over consecutive non-training days (i.e. weekend) and accumulated exercise stress when quantified using indices of cardiovascular strain. Methods: Twelve international calibre female field hockey players training as part of a national team were participants over a four-week mesocycle prior to a 2016 Olympic qualifying tournament. On-field exercise stress was examined using heart rate (HR) dynamics and quantified as; (1) training load and (2) time (min) spent above anaerobic threshold. The square root of the mean squared differences of successive cardiac cycles (R-R intervals) recorded on Saturday and Sunday were individually calculated and log-transformed prior to being averaged (Ln rMSSDweekend). Day-to-day variation in Ln rMSSD over the weekend was expressed using the coefficient of variation (Ln rMSSDCV). Non-linear regression analysis examined the association between accumulated exercise stress and Ln rMSSDCV. Results: A quadratic association between each index of exercise stress and Ln rMSSDCV was identified. After converting the coefficient of determination into a correlation coefficient (90% CL), the respective association between Ln rMSSDCV and training load (AU); r = 0.40 (0.16:0.59) and time above threshold; r = 0.35 (0.06:0.59) were observed. Conclusion: Ln rMSSDCV derived over consecutive non-training days displayed a moderate, yet significant association between accumulated exercise stress when expressed as global or high-intensity indices of cardiovascular strain. Weekend assessments may offer a practical and appropriate juncture between microcycles to assess the magnitude of perturbation in cardiac autonomic homeostasis prior to entering subsequent training periods.

Abstract
Decreases in heart rate variability, a marker of autonomic nervous system function, are associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. Heart rate variability increases in non-rapid eye movement sleep, peaking in slow-wave sleep. Therefore, decreasing the amount of deep sleep, for example, by introducing patients to a sleep laboratory environment, could decrease heart rate variability, increasing cardiovascular risk. We studied four groups of women with no previous sleep laboratory experience: young [n = 11, 23.1 (0.5) years]; perimenopausal [n = 15, 48.0 (0.4) years]; postmenopausal without hormone therapy [n = 22, 63.4 (0.8) years]; and postmenopausal on hormone therapy [n = 16, 63.1 (0.9) years], using a cross-sectional design. Polysomnography including electrocardiogram was performed over two consecutive nights. Heart rate variability was assessed overnight, and the first-night effect on heart rate variability was analysed. Furthermore, correlations between heart rate variability and sleep variables were analysed. Using combined groups, only minor changes were observed in non-linear heart rate variability, indicating increased parasympathetic tone from the first to the second night. No group differences in first-night effect were seen. Heart rate variability and sleep variables were not significantly correlated. Heart rate variability decreased with increasing age, and it was lowest in the postmenopausal women on hormone therapy. We conclude that a first night in a sleep laboratory elicits only minimal changes in overnight vagally mediated non-linear heart rate variability in women irrespective of reproductive state. This finding warrants further analyses in different sleep stages, but suggests that changes in sleep architecture per se do not predict the autonomic strain of a poor night.

Abstract
Previous studies have indicated that central GABAergic mechanisms are involved in the heart rate (HR) responses at the onset of exercise. On the basis of previous research that showed similar increases in HR during passive and active cycling, we reasoned that the GABAergic mechanisms involved in the HR responses at the exercise onset are primarily mediated by muscle mechanoreceptor afferents. Therefore, in this study, we sought to determine whether central GABA mechanisms are involved in the muscle mechanoreflex-mediated HR responses at the onset of exercise in humans. Twenty-eight healthy subjects (14 men and 14 women) aged between 18 and 35 yr randomly performed three bouts of 5-s passive and active cycling under placebo and after oral administration of diazepam (10 mg), a benzodiazepine that produces an enhancement in GABAA activity. Beat-to-beat HR (electrocardiography) and arterial blood pressure (finger photopletysmography) were continuously measured. Electromyography of the vastus lateralis was obtained to confirm no electrical activity during passive trials. HR increased from rest under placebo and further increased after administration of diazepam in both passive (change: 12 ± 1 vs. 17 ± 1 beats/min, P < 0.01) and active (change: 14 ± 1 vs. 18 ± 1 beats/min, P < 0.01) cycling. Arterial blood pressure increased from rest similarly during all conditions ( P > 0.05). Importantly, no sex-related differences were found in any variables during experiments. These findings demonstrate, for the first time, that the GABAergic mechanisms significantly contribute to the muscle mechanoreflex-mediated HR responses at the onset of exercise in humans. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We found that passive and voluntary cycling evokes similar increases in heart rate and that these responses were enhanced after diazepam administration, a benzodiazepine that enhances GABAA activity. These findings suggest that the GABAergic system may contribute to the muscle mechanoreflex-mediated vagal withdrawal at the onset of exercise in humans.

Abstract
Lower vagal activity is associated with psychopathology independent of age. Research suggests that alterations of vagal activity precede the development of psychopathology. The present review aimed to quantify sex differences in vagal activity in children and adolescents. Studies reporting on sex differences on measures of vagally-mediated heart rate variability derived from short-term recordings under resting conditions in boys and girls were included. Drawing on data from more than 5,000 children and adolescents, we provide evidence that healthy young girls display lower vagal activity and greater mean heart rate compared to boys, a finding that may have implications for risk associated with the development of internalizing psychopathology and somatic ill-health.
