Spinel Nanostructures for the Hydrogenation of CO2 to Methanol and Hydrocarbon Chemicals

Composite oxides have been widely applied in the hydrogenation of CO/CO2 to methanol or as the component of bifunctional oxide-zeolite for the synthesis of hydrocarbon chemicals. However, it is still challenging to disentangle the stepwise formation mechanism of CH3OH at working conditions and selectively convert CO2 to hydrocarbon chemicals with narrow distribution. Here, we investigate the reaction network of the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol over a series of spinel oxides (AB2O4), among which the Zn-based nanostructures offer superior performance in methanol synthesis. Through a series of (quasi) in situ spectroscopic characterizations, we evidence that the dissociation of H2 tends to follow a heterolytic pathway and that hydrogenation ability can be regulated by the combination of Zn with Ga or Al. The coordinatively unsaturated metal sites over ZnAl2Ox and ZnGa2Ox originating from oxygen vacancies (OVs) are evidenced to be responsible for the dissociative adsorption and activation of CO2. The evolution of the reaction intermediates, including both carbonaceous and hydrogen species at high temperatures and pressures over the spinel oxides, has been experimentally elaborated at the atomic level. With the integration of a series of zeolites or zeotypes, high selectivities of hydrocarbon chemicals with narrow distributions can be directly produced from CO2 and H2, offering a promising route for CO2 utilization.

Selective Stereoretention of Carbohydrates upon C-C Cleavage Enabling D-Glyceric Acid Production with High Optical Purity over a Ag/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst

Chiral carboxylic acid production from renewable biomass by chemocatalysis is vitally important for reducing our carbon footprint, but remains underdeveloped. We herein establish a strategy that make use of a stereogenic center of biomass to achieve a rare example of D-glyceric acid production with the highest yield (86.8 %) reported to date as well as an excellent ee value (>99 %). Unlike traditional asymmetric catalysis, chiral catalysts/additives are not required. Ample experiments combined with quantum chemical calculations established the origins of the stereogenic center and catalyst performance. The chirality at C4 in D-xylose was proved to be retained and successfully delivered to C2 in D-glyceric acid during C-C cleavage. The remarkable cooperative-roles of Ag+ and Ag0 in the constructed Ag/γ-Al2O3 catalyst are disclosed as the crucial contributors. Ag+ was responsible for low-temperature activation of D-xylose, while Ag0 facilitated the generation of active O* from O2. Ag+ and active O* cooperatively promoted the precise cleavage of the C2-C3 bond, and more importantly O* allowed the immediate fast oxidization of the D-glyceraldehyde intermediate to stabilize D-glyceric acid, thereby inhibiting the side reaction that induced racemization. This strategy makes a significant breakthrough in overcoming the limitation of poor enantioselectivity in current chemocatalytic conversion of biomass.

Advances in morphology-controlled alumina and its supported Pd catalysts: synthesis and applications

Alumina materials, as one of the cornerstones of the modern chemical industry, possess physical and chemical properties that include excellent mechanical strength and structure stability, which also make them highly suitable as catalyst supports. Alumina-supported Pd-based catalysts with the advantages of exceptional catalytic performance, flexible regulated surface metal/acid sites, and good regeneration ability have been widely used in many traditional chemical industry fields and have also shown great application prospects in emerging fields. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent advances in alumina and its supported Pd-based catalysts. Specifically, the synthesis strategies, morphology transformation mechanisms, and structural properties of alumina with various morphologies are comprehensively summarized and discussed in-depth. Then, the preparation approaches of Pd/Al2O3 catalysts (impregnation, precipitation, and other emerging methods), as well as the metal-support interactions (MSIs), are revisited. Moreover, Some promising applications have been chosen as representative reactions in fine chemicals, environmental purification, and sustainable development fields to highlight the universal functionality of the alumina-supported Pd-based catalysts. The role of the Pd species, alumina support, promoters, and metal-support interactions in the enhancement of catalytic performance are also discussed. Finally, some challenges and upcoming opportunities in the academic and industrial application of the alumina and its supported Pd-based are presented and put forward.

Synergistic growth of nickel and platinum nanoparticles via exsolution and surface reaction

Bimetallic catalysts combining precious and earth-abundant metals in well designed nanoparticle architectures can enable cost efficient and stable heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we present an interaction-driven in-situ approach to engineer finely dispersed Ni decorated Pt nanoparticles (1-6 nm) on perovskite nanofibres via reduction at high temperatures (600-800 oC). Deposition of Pt (0.5 wt%) enhances the reducibility of the perovskite support and promotes the nucleation of Ni cations via metal-support interaction, thereafter the Ni species react with Pt forming alloy nanoparticles, with the combined processes yielding smaller nanoparticles that either of the contributing processes. Tuneable uniform Pt-Ni nanoparticles are produced on the perovskite surface, yielding reactivity and stability surpassing 1 wt.% Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts for CO oxidation. This approach heralds the possibility of in-situ fabrication of supported bimetallic nanoparticles with engineered compositional distributions and performance.

Single-Atom based Metal-Organic Framework Photocatalysts for Solar-Fuel Generation

The growing demand for fossil fuels and subsequent CO2 emissions prompted a search for alternate sources of energy and a reduction in CO2. Photocatalysis driven by solar light has been found as a potential research area to tackle both these problems. In this direction, SAC@MOF (Single-atom loaded MOFs) photocatalysis is an emerging field and a promising technology. The unique properties of single-atom catalysts (SACs), such as high catalytic activity and selectivity, are leveraged in these systems. Photocatalysis, focusing on the utilization of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as platforms for creating single-atom catalysts (SACs) characterized by metal single-atoms (SAs) as their active sites, are noted for their unparalleled atomic efficiency, precisely defined active sites, and superior photocatalytic performance. The synergy between MOFs and SAs in photocatalytic systems is meticulously examined, highlighting how they collectively enhance photocatalytic efficiency. This review examines SAC@MOF development and applications in environmental and energy sectors, focusing on synthesis and stabilization methods for SACs on MOFs and also characterization techniques vital for understanding these catalysts. The potential of SAC@MOF in CO2 Photoreduction and Photocatalytic H2 evolution is highlighted, emphasizing its role in green energy technologies and advances in materials science and Photocatalysis.

Strategies Toward High Selectivity, Activity, and Stability of Single-Atom Catalysts

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) hold immense promise in facilitating the rational use of metal resources and achieving atomic economy due to their exceptional atom-utilization efficiency and distinct characteristics. Despite the growing interest in SACs, only limited reviews have holistically summarized their advancements centering on performance metrics. In this review, first, a thorough overview on the research progress in SACs is presented from a performance perspective and the strategies, advancements, and intriguing approaches employed to enhance the critical attributes in SACs are discussed. Subsequently, a comprehensive summary and critical analysis of the electrochemical applications of SACs are provided, with a particular focus on their efficacy in the oxygen reduction reaction , oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction , CO2 reduction reaction, and N2 reduction reaction . Finally, the outline future research directions on SACs by concentrating on performance-driven investigation, where potential areas for improvement are identified and promising avenues for further study are highlighted, addressing challenges to unlock the full potential of SACs as high-performance catalysts.

Advances in Synthesis and Applications of Single-Atom Catalysts for Metal Oxide-Based Gas Sensors

As a stable, low-cost, environment-friendly, and gas-sensitive material, semiconductor metal oxides have been widely used for gas sensing. In the past few years, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have gained increasing attention in the field of gas sensing with the advantages of maximized atomic utilization and unique electronic and chemical properties and have successfully been applied to enhance the detection sensitivity and selectivity of metal oxide gas sensors. However, the application of SACs in gas sensors is still in its infancy. Herein, we critically review the recent advances and current status of single-atom catalysts in metal oxide gas sensors, providing some suggestions for the development of this field. The synthesis methods and characterization techniques of SAC-modified metal oxides are summarized. The interactions between SACs and metal oxides are crucial for the stable loading of single-atom catalysts and for improving gas-sensitive performance. Then, the current application progress of various SACs (Au, Pt, Cu, Ni, etc.) in metal oxide gas sensors is introduced. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of SACs in metal oxide gas sensors are presented.

Cyanide-Isolated Cobalt Catalyst for Ultraefficient Advanced Oxidation Treatment

Catalyst design with a "Co-N-C" structure at the atomic level has shown great interest for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation toward advanced oxidation water treatment. Here, we present an innovative way of producing cobalt hexacyanocobaltate (Co-HCC) with an abundance of atomically isolated CoII-NC sites at the outer surface. This material allows ultraefficient PMS activation to generate plenty of sulfate and hydroxyl radicals, with a turnover frequency much higher than those of most cobalt-based catalysts reported so far and even the homogeneous catalysis by Co2+ ions. We gained fundamental insights on its unprecedently high catalytic performance based on experimental results and computational study. Then, we controlled the growth of Co-HCC on a ceramic membrane to form a confined oxidation environment that utilizes the extended surface area and maximal exposure of short-lived radicals for a fast removal of organic pollutants that enter the pores. As a result, this catalytic membrane achieves complete disruption of micropollutants under a water flux up to 10,000 LMH (merely 0.2 s retention time) and further >90% mineralization of organic pollutants in complex industrial wastewater matrices (<100 s retention time), together with the merits of operational simplicity and great longevity (2 weeks continuous run). Our study elicits a new milestone in "Co-N-C" catalyst structure design for PMS activation and highlights the great interest of producing catalytic membranes for a confined treatment of organic pollutants from partial oxidation to complete mineralization as a new benchmark.

Water-assisted oxidative redispersion of Cu particles through formation of Cu hydroxide at room temperature

Sintering of active metal species often happens during catalytic reactions, which requires redispersion in a reactive atmosphere at elevated temperatures to recover the activity. Herein, we report a simple method to redisperse sintered Cu catalysts via O2-H2O treatment at room temperature. In-situ spectroscopic characterizations reveal that H2O induces the formation of hydroxylated Cu species in humid O2, pushing surface diffusion of Cu atoms at room temperature. Further, surface OH groups formed on most hydroxylable support surfaces such as γ-Al2O3, SiO2, and CeO2 in the humid atmosphere help to pull the mobile Cu species and enhance Cu redispersion. Both pushing and pulling effects of gaseous H2O promote the structural transformation of Cu aggregates into highly dispersed Cu species at room temperature, which exhibit enhanced activity in reverse water gas shift and preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide reactions. These findings highlight the important role of H2O in the dynamic structure evolution of supported metal nanocatalysts and lay the foundation for the regeneration of sintered catalysts under mild conditions.

Single-Atom Alloys Materials for CO2 and CH4 Catalytic Conversion

The catalytic conversion of greenhouse gases CH4 and CO2 constitutes an effective approach for alleviating the greenhouse effect and generating valuable chemical products. However, the intricate molecular characteristics characterized by high symmetry and bond energies, coupled with the complexity of associated reactions, pose challenges for conventional catalysts to attain high activity, product selectivity, and enduring stability. Single-atom alloys (SAAs) materials, distinguished by their tunable composition and unique electronic structures, confer versatile physicochemical properties and modulable functionalities. In recent years, SAAs materials demonstrate pronounced advantages and expansive prospects in catalytic conversion of CH4 and CO2. This review begins by introducing the challenges entailed in catalytic conversion of CH4 and CO2 and the advantages offered by SAAs. Subsequently, the intricacies of synthesis strategies employed for SAAs are presented and characterization techniques and methodologies are introduced. The subsequent section furnishes a meticulous and inclusive overview of research endeavors concerning SAAs in CO2 catalytic conversion, CH4 conversion, and synergy CH4 and CO2 conversion. The particular emphasis is directed toward scrutinizing the intricate mechanisms underlying the influence of SAAs on reaction activity and product selectivity. Finally, insights are presented on the development and future challenges of SAAs in CH4 and CO2 conversion reactions.

Doping Efects on Ethane/Ethylene Dehydrogenation Catalyzed by Pt2X Nanoclusters

The catalytic dehydrogenation of light alkanes is key to transform low-cost hydrocarbons to high value-added chemicals. Although Pt is extremely efficient at catalyzing this reaction, it suffers from coke formation that deactivates the catalyst. Dopants such as Sn are widely used to increase the stability and lifetime of Pt. In this work, the dehydrogenation reaction of ethane catalyzed by Pt3 and Pt2X (X=Si, Ge, Sn, P and Al) nanocatalysts has been studied computationally by means of density functional calculations. Our results show how the presence of dopants in the nanocluster structure affects its electronic properties and catalytic activity. Exploration of the potential energy surfaces show that non-doped catalyst Pt3 present low selectivity towards ethylene formation, where acetylene resulting from double dehydrogenation reaction will be obtained as a side product (in agreement with the experimental evidence). On the contrary, the inclusion of Si, Ge, Sn, P or Al as dopant agents implies a selectivity enhancement, where acetylene formation is not energetically favoured. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of such dopant elements for the design of Pt-based catalysts on ethane dehydrogenation.

Tailoring the aluminum nanocrystal surface oxide for all-aluminum-based antenna-reactor plasmonic photocatalysts

Aluminum nanocrystals (AlNCs) are of increasing interest as sustainable, earth-abundant nanoparticles for visible wavelength plasmonics and as versatile nanoantennas for energy-efficient plasmonic photocatalysis. Here, we show that annealing AlNCs under various gases and thermal conditions induces substantial, systematic changes in their surface oxide, modifying crystalline phase, surface morphology, density, and defect type and concentration. Tailoring the surface oxide properties enables AlNCs to function as all-aluminum-based antenna-reactor plasmonic photocatalysts, with the modified surface oxides providing varying reactivities and selectivities for several chemical reactions.

Identification of Direct Anchoring Sites for Monoatomic Dispersion of Precious Metals (Pt, Pd, Ag) on CeO2 Support

Monoatomic dispersion of precious metals on the surface of CeO2 nanocrystals is a highly practical approach for dramatically reducing the usage of precious metals while exploiting the unique properties of single-atom catalysts. However, the specific atomic sites for anchoring precious metal atoms on the CeO2 support and underlying chemical mechanism remain partially unknown. Herein, we show that the terminal hydroxyls on the (100) surface are the most stable sites for anchoring Ag atoms on CeO2 , indicating that CeO2 nanocubes are the most efficient substrates to achieve monoatomic dispersion of Ag. Importantly, the newly identified chemical mechanism for single-metal-atom dispersion on CeO2 nanocubes appears to be generic and can thus be extended to other precious metals (Pt and Pd). In fact, our experiments also show that atomically dispersed Pt/Pd species exhibit morphology- and temperature-dependent CO selectivity in the catalytic CO2 hydrogenation reaction.

Frustrated Lewis pairs on pentacoordinated Al3+-enriched Al2O3 promote heterolytic hydrogen activation and hydrogenation

As an emerging class of metal-free catalysts, frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) catalysts have been greatly constructed and applied in many fields. Homogeneous FLPs have witnessed significant development, while limited heterogeneous FLPs catalysts are available. Herein, we report that heterogeneous FLPs on pentacoordinated Al3+-enriched Al2O3 readily promote the heterolytic activation of H2 and thus hydrogenation catalysis. The defect-rich Al2O3 was prepared by simple calcination of a carboxylate-containing Al precursor. Combinatorial studies confirmed the presence of rich FLPs on the surface of the defective Al2O3. In contrast to conventional alumina (γ-Al2O3), the FLP-containing Al2O3 can activate H2 in the absence of any transition metal species. More importantly, H2 was activated by surface FLPs in a heterolytic pathway, leading to the hydrogenation of styrene in a stepwise process. This work paves the way for the exploration of more underlying heterogeneous FLPs catalysts and further understanding of accurate active sites and catalytic mechanisms of heterogeneous FLPs at the molecular level.

Dynamic Behavior of Platinum Atoms and Clusters in the Native Oxide Layer of Aluminum Nanocrystals

Strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) are well-known in the field of heterogeneous catalysis to induce the encapsulation of platinum (Pt) group metals by oxide supports through high temperature H2 reduction. However, demonstrations of SMSI overlayers have largely been limited to reducible oxides, such as TiO2 and Nb2O5. Here, we show that the amorphous native surface oxide of plasmonic aluminum nanocrystals (AlNCs) exhibits SMSI-induced encapsulation of Pt following reduction in H2 in a Pt structure dependent manner. Reductive treatment in H2 at 300 °C induces the formation of an AlOx SMSI overlayer on Pt clusters, leaving Pt single-atom sites (Ptiso) exposed available for catalysis. The remaining exposed Ptiso species possess a more uniform local coordination environment than has been observed on other forms of Al2O3, suggesting that the AlOx native oxide of AlNCs presents well-defined anchoring sites for individual Pt atoms. This observation extends our understanding of SMSIs by providing evidence that H2-induced encapsulation can occur for a wider variety of materials and should stimulate expanded studies of this effect to include nonreducible oxides with oxygen defects and the presence of disorder. It also suggests that the single-atom sites created in this manner, when combined with the plasmonic properties of the Al nanocrystal core, may allow for site-specific single-atom plasmonic photocatalysis, providing dynamic control over the light-driven reactivity in these systems.

Extraordinary Thermal Stability and Sinter Resistance of Sub-2 nm Platinum Nanoparticles Anchored to a Carbon Support by Selenium

Nanoparticle sintering has long been a major challenge in developing catalytic systems for use at elevated temperatures. Here we report an in situ electron microscopy study of the extraordinary sinter resistance of a catalytic system comprised of sub-2 nm Pt nanoparticles on a Se-decorated carbon support. When heated to 700 °C, the average size of the Pt nanoparticles only increased from 1.6 to 2.2 nm, while the crystal structure, together with the {111} and {100} facets, of the Pt nanoparticles was well retained. Our electron microscopy analyses suggested that the superior resistance against sintering originated from the Pt-Se interaction. Confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray elemental mapping and electron energy loss spectra, the Se atoms surrounding the Pt nanoparticles could survive the heating. This work not only offers an understanding of the physics behind the thermal behavior of this catalytic material but also sheds light on the future development of sinter-resistant catalytic systems.

Alkaline-earth ion stabilized sub-nano-platinum tin clusters for propane dehydrogenation

The strong promotion effects of alkali/alkaline earth metals are frequently reported for heterogeneous catalytic processes such as propane dehydrogenation (PDH), but their functioning principles remain elusive. This paper describes the effect of the addition of calcium (Ca) on reducing the deactivation rate of platinum-tin (Pt-Sn) catalyzed PDH from 0.04 h-1 to 0.0098 h-1 at 873 K under a WHSV of 16.5 h-1 of propane. The Pt-Sn-Ca catalyst shows a high propylene selectivity of >96% with a propylene production rate of 41 molC3H6 (gPt h)-1 and ∼1% activity loss after regeneration. The combination of characterization and DFT simulations reveals that Ca acts as a structural promoter favoring the transition of Snn+ in the parent catalyst to Sn0 during reduction, and the latter is an electron donor that increases the electron density of Pt. This greatly suppresses coke formation from deep dehydrogenation. Moreover, it was found that Ca promotes the formation of a highly reactive and sintering-resistant sub-nano Pt-Sn alloy with a diameter of approximately 0.8 nm. These lead to high activity and selectivity for the Pt-Sn-Ca catalyst for PDH.

Fine-Tuning of Pt Dispersion on Al2O3 and Understanding the Nature of Active Pt Sites for Efficient CO and NH3 Oxidation Reactions

Fine-tuning the dispersion of active metal species on widely used supports is a research hotspot in the catalysis community, which is vital for achieving a balance between the atomic utilization efficiency and the intrinsic activity of active sites. In this work, using bayerite Al(OH)3 as support directly or after precalcination at 200 or 550 °C, Pt/Al2O3 catalysts with distinct Pt dispersions from single atoms to clusters (ca. 2 nm) were prepared and evaluated for CO and NH3 removal. Richer surface hydroxyl groups on AlOx(OH)y support were proved to better facilitate the dispersion of Pt. However, Pt/Al2O3 with relatively lower Pt dispersion could exhibit better activity in CO/NH3 oxidation reactions. Further reaction mechanism study revealed that the Pt sites on Pt/Al2O3 with lower Pt dispersion could be activated to Pt0 species much easier under the CO oxidation condition, on which a higher CO adsorption capacity and more efficient O2 activation were achieved simultaneously. Compared to Pt single atoms, PtOx clusters could also better activate NH3 into -NH2 and -HNO species. The higher CO adsorption capacity and the more efficient NH3/O2 activation ability on Pt/Al2O3 with relatively lower Pt dispersion well explained its higher CO/NH3 oxidation activity. This study emphasizes the importance of avoiding a singular pursuit of single-atom catalyst synthesis and instead focusing on achieving the most effective Pt species on Al2O3 support for targeted reactions. This approach avoids unnecessary limitations and enables a more practical and efficient strategy for Pt catalyst fabrication in emission control applications.

Controlling Metal-Oxide Reducibility for Efficient C-H Bond Activation in Hydrocarbons

Knowing the structure of catalytically active species/phases and providing methods for their purposeful generation are two prerequisites for the design of catalysts with desired performance. Herein, we introduce a simple method for precise preparation of supported/bulk catalysts. It utilizes the ability of metal oxides to dissolve and to simultaneously precipitate during their treatment in an aqueous ammonia solution. Applying this method for a conventional VOx -Al2 O3 catalyst, the concentration of coordinatively unsaturated Al sites was tuned simply by changing the pH value of the solution. These sites affect the strength of V-O-Al bonds of isolated VOx species and thus the reducibility of the latter. This method is also applicable for controlling the reducibility of bulk catalysts as demonstrated for a CeO2 -ZrO2 -Al2 O3 system. The application potential of the developed catalysts was confirmed in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene with CO2 and in the non-oxidative propane dehydrogenation to propene. Our approach is extendable to the preparation of any metal oxide catalysts dissolvable in an ammonia solution.

Sonication strategy for anchoring single metal atom oxides (W, Cu, Co) on CeO2-rGO for boosting electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

In the field of electrocatalysis, single-atomic-layer tungsten, copper, and cobalt oxide on CeO2, ethylene diamine (ED) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) supported materials shows tremendous potential. Despite the enormous interest in single metal atom oxide (SMAO) catalysts, it is still very difficult to directly convert readily available bulk metal oxide into single atom oxide. It is crucial and tough to create high performance materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline environment. Herein, a single tungsten, copper and cobalt atom oxide (SMAO) anchored on the CeO2 atomic layer and overall components deposited on the rGO (rGO-ED-CeO2-WCuCo) is prepared through a one-pot sonication technique. The presence of SMAO is identified by high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) imaging. The electrocatalytic performance of final rGO-ED-CeO2-WCuCo-30 nanocomposite for the OER in 1 M KOH electrolyte is evidenced by providing low overpotential of 283 mV at 10 mA cm-2. The Tafel slope for OER using rGO-ED-CeO2-WCuCo-30 electrocatalysts is 57.03 mV dec-1. The electrocatalytic activity of rGO-ED-CeO2-WCuCo-30 nanocomposites for OER was noticeably increased when compared to bare CeO2 nanorods (401 mV), rGO-ED-CeO2-WCo-30 (345 mV), rGO-ED-CeO2-WCu-30 (340 mV) and rGO-ED-CeO2-WCuCo-20 (321 mV) samples.

Atomistic origin of kinetics in hydrated aluminosilicate gels upon precipitation

Calcium-alumino-silicate-hydrate (CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O, or C-A-S-H) gel, which is the binding phase of cement-based materials, greatly influences concrete mechanical properties and durability. However, the atomic-scale kinetics of the aluminosilicate network condensation remains puzzling. Here, based on reactive molecular dynamics simulations of C-A-S-H systems formation with varying Al/Ca molar ratios, we study the kinetic mechanism of the hydrated aluminosilicate gels upon precipitation. We show that the condensation activation energy decreases with the Al/Ca molar ratio, which suggests that the concentration of the Al polytopes has a great effect on controlling the kinetics of the gelation reaction. Significantly, we demonstrate that 5-fold Al atoms are mainly forming at high Al/Ca molar ratios since there are insufficient hydrogen cations or extra calcium cations to compensate the negatively charged Al polytopes at high Al/Ca molar ratios during accelerated aging.

Scalable Synthesis of Flexible Single-Atom Monolithic Catalysts for High-Efficiency, Durable CO Oxidation at Low Temperature

The creation of single-atom catalysts in a large-size, high-yield, and stable form represents an important direction for high-efficiency industrial catalysis in the future. Herein, we report a strategy to synthesize flexible single-atom monolithic catalysts (SAMCs) based on the hierarchical 3D assembly of single-atom-loaded oxide ceramic nanofibers. The nanofibers, which can be produced in a continuous and scalable manner, serve as an ideal support for single atoms spontaneously and almost completely exposed at the surface through the Kirkendall effect-enabled in situ ion migration during the spinning process, resulting in both high yield and large loading quantity. Moreover, the hierarchical 3D assembly of these nanofibers into a porous, flexible structure endows the SAMCs with the advantages of sufficient infiltration and oscillation tolerance when faced with high-throughput gaseous media, leading to both high catalytic efficiency and excellent durability. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a Pt SAMC is synthesized, which exhibits 100% CO oxidation at low temperature (∼170 °C), excellent invariance toward high-frequency (10 Hz) oscillation, and high structural stability from 25 to 300 °C. This work is beneficial for the large-scale production of SAMCs in broad industrial applications.

A General Dual-Metal Nanocrystal Dissociation Strategy to Generate Robust High-Temperature-Stable Alumina-Supported Single-Atom Catalysts

Designing new synthesis routes to fabricate highly thermally durable precious metal single-atom catalysts (SACs) is challenging in industrial applications. Herein, a general strategy is presented that starts from dual-metal nanocrystals (NCs), using bimetallic NCs as a facilitator to spontaneously convert a series of noble metals to single atoms on aluminum oxide. The metal single atoms are captured by cation defects in situ formed on the surface of the inverse spinel (AB₂O₄) structure, which process provides numerous anchoring sites, thus facilitating generation of the isolated metal atoms that contributes to the extraordinary thermodynamic stability. The Pd₁/AlCo₂O₄-Al₂O₃ shows not only improved low-temperature activity but also unprecedented (hydro)thermal stability for CO and propane oxidation under harsh aging conditions. Furthermore, our strategy exhibits a small scaling-up effect by the simple physical mixing of commercial metal oxide aggregates with Al₂O₃. The good regeneration between oxidative and reductive atmospheres of these ionic palladium species makes this catalyst system of potential interest for emissions control.

Dynamic Evolution of Palladium Single Atoms on Anatase Titania Support Determines the Reverse Water-Gas Shift Activity

Research interest in single-atom catalysts (SACs) has been continuously increasing. However, the lack of understanding of the dynamic behaviors of SACs during applications hinders catalyst development and mechanistic understanding. Herein, we report on the evolution of active sites over Pd/TiO₂-anatase SAC (Pd₁/TiO₂) in the reverse water-gas shift (rWGS) reaction. Combining kinetics, in situ characterization, and theory, we show that at T ≥ 350 °C, the reduction of TiO₂ by H₂ alters the coordination environment of Pd, creating Pd sites with partially cleaved Pd-O interfacial bonds and a unique electronic structure that exhibit high intrinsic rWGS activity through the carboxyl pathway. The activation by H₂ is accompanied by the partial sintering of single Pd atoms (Pd₁) into disordered, flat, ∼1 nm diameter clusters (Pd_n). The highly active Pd sites in the new coordination environment under H₂ are eliminated by oxidation, which, when performed at a high temperature, also redisperses Pd_n and facilitates the reduction of TiO₂. In contrast, Pd₁ sinters into crystalline, ∼5 nm particles (Pd_NP) during CO treatment, deactivating Pd₁/TiO₂. During the rWGS reaction, the two Pd evolution pathways coexist. The activation by H₂ dominates, leading to the increasing rate with time-on-stream, and steady-state Pd active sites similar to the ones formed under H₂. This work demonstrates how the coordination environment and nuclearity of metal sites on a SAC evolve during catalysis and pretreatments and how their activity is modulated by these behaviors. These insights on SAC dynamics and the structure-function relationship are valuable to mechanistic understanding and catalyst design.

Boosting Ozone Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene at Room Temperature by Using Hydroxyl-Mediated MnOx/Al2O3 Catalysts

Ozone catalytic oxidation (OZCO) has gained great interest in environmental remediation while it still faces a big challenge during the deep degradation of refractory volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at room temperature. Hydroxylation of the catalytic surface provides a new strategy for regulating the catalytic activity to boost VOC degradation. Herein, OZCO of toluene at room temperature over hydroxyl-mediated MnO_x/Al₂O₃ catalysts was originally demonstrated. Specifically, a novel hydroxyl-mediated MnO_x/Al₂O₃ catalyst was developed via the in situ AlOOH reconstruction method and used for toluene OZCO. The toluene degradation performance of MnO_x/Al₂O₃ was significantly superior to those of most of the state-of-the-art catalysts, and 100% toluene was removed with an excellent mineralization rate (82.3%) and catalytic stability during OZCO. ESR and in situ DRIFTs results demonstrated that surface hydroxyl groups (HGs) greatly improved the reactive oxygen species generation, thus dramatically accelerating the benzene ring breakage and deep mineralization. Furthermore, HGs provided anchoring sites for uniformly dispersing MnO_x and greatly enhanced toluene adsorption and ozone activation. This work paves a way for deep decomposition of aromatic VOCs at room temperature.

Disordered interfaces of alkaline aluminate salt hydrates provide glimpses of Al3+ coordination changes

HYPOTHESIS

The precipitation and dissolution of aluminum-bearing mineral phases in aqueous systems often proceed via changes in both aluminum coordination number and connectivity, complicating molecular-scale interpretation of the transformation mechanism. Here, the thermally induced transformation of crystalline sodium aluminum salt hydrate, a phase comprised of monomeric octahedrally coordinated aluminate which is of relevance to industrial aluminum processing, has been studied. Because intermediate aluminum coordination states during melting have not previously been detected, it is hypothesized that the transition to lower coordinated aluminum ions occurs within ahighly disordered quasi-two-dimensional phase at the solid-solution interface.

EXPERIMENTS AND SIMULATIONS

In situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and²⁷Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were used to monitor the melting transition of nonasodium aluminate hydrate (NSA, Na₉[Al(OH)₆]₂·3(OH)·6H₂O). A mechanistic interpretation was developed based on complementary classical molecular dynamics (CMD) simulations including enhanced sampling. A reactive forcefield was developed to bridge speciation in the solution and in the solid phase.

FINDINGS

In contrast to classical dissolution, aluminum coordination change proceeds through a dynamically stabilized ensemble of intermediate states in a disordered layer at the solid-solution interface. In both melting and dissolution of NSA, octahedral, monomeric aluminum transition through an intermediate of pentahedral coordination. The intermediate dehydroxylates to form tetrahedral aluminate (Al(OH)₄^-) in the liquid phase. This coordination change is concomitant with a breaking of the ionic aluminate-sodium ionlinkages. The solution phase Al(OH)₄^- ions subsequently polymerize into polynuclear aluminate ions. However, there are some differences between bulk melting and interfacial dissolution, with the onset of the surface-controlled process occurring at a lower temperature (∼30 °C) and the coordination change taking place more gradually as a function of temperature. This work to determine the local structure and dynamics of aluminum in the disordered layer provides a new basis to understand mechanisms controlling aluminum phase transformations in highly alkaline solutions.

Abrading-Induced Breakdown of Ag Nanoparticles into Atomically Dispersed Ag for Enhancing Antimicrobial Performance

Silver is among the most essential antimicrobial agents. Increasing the efficacy of silver-based antimicrobial materials will reduce operating costs. Herein, we show that mechanical abrading causes atomization of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) into atomically dispersed Ag (AgSAs) on the surfaces of an oxide-mineral support, which eventually boosts the antibacterial efficacy considerably. This approach is straightforward, scalable, and applicable to a wide range of oxide-mineral supports; additionally, it does not require any chemical additives and operates under ambient conditions. The obtained AgSAs-loaded γ-Al₂O₃ inactivated Escherichia coli (E. coli) five times as fast as the original AgNPs-loaded γ-Al₂O₃. It can be utilized over 10 runs with minimal efficiency loss. The structural characterizations indicate that AgSAs exhibit a nominal charge of 0 and are anchored at the doubly bridging OH on the γ-Al₂O₃ surfaces. Mechanism studies demonstrate that AgSAs, like AgNPs, damage bacterial cell wall integrity, but they release Ag⁺ and superoxide substantially faster. This work not only provides a simple method for manufacturing AgSAs-based materials but also shows that AgSAs have better antibacterial properties than the AgNPs counterpart.

Rational Design of Atomically Dispersed Metal Site Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Future renewable energy supply and a cleaner Earth greatly depend on various crucial catalytic reactions for the society. Atomically dispersed metal site electrocatalysts (ADMSEs) have attracted tremendous research interest and are considered as the next-generation promising oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts due to the maximum atom utilization efficiency, tailorable catalytic sites, and tunable electronic structures. Despite great efforts have been devoted to the development of ADMSEs, the systematic summary for design principles of high-efficiency ADMSEs is not sufficiently highlighted for ORR. In this review, the authors first summarize the fundamental ORR mechanisms for ADMSEs, and further discuss the intrinsic catalytic mechanism from the perspective of theoretical calculation. Then, the advanced characterization techniques to identify the active sites and effective synthesis methods to prepare catalysts for ADMSEs are also showcased. Subsequently, a special emphasis is placed on effective strategies for the rational design of the advanced ADMSEs. Finally, the present challenges to be addressed in practical application and future research directions are also proposed to overcome the relevant obstacles for developing high-efficiency ORR electrocatalysts. This review aims to provide a deeper understanding for catalytic mechanisms and valuable design principles to obtain the advanced ADMSEs for sustainable energy conversion and storage techniques.

2D carbon nitride as a support with single Cu, Ag, and Au atoms for carbon dioxide reduction reaction

The electrochemical conversion of CO₂ into value-added chemicals is an important approach to recycling CO₂. In this work, we have combined the most efficient metal catalysts for this reaction, namely Cu, Ag, and Au, as single-atom particles dispersed on a two-dimensional carbon nitride support, with the aim of exploring their performance in the CO₂ reduction reaction. Here, we report density functional theory computations showing the effect of single metal-atom particles on the support. We found that bare carbon nitride needed a high overpotential to overcome the energy barrier for the first proton-electron transfer, while the second transfer was exergonic. The deposition of single metal atoms enhances the catalytic activity of the system as the first proton-electron transfer is favored in terms of energy, although strong binding energies were found for CO adsorption on Cu and Au single atoms. Our theoretical interpretations are consistent with the experimental evidence that the competitive H₂ generation is favored due to the strong CO binding energies. Our computational study paves the road to finding suitable metals that catalyze the first proton-electron transfer in the carbon dioxide reduction reaction and produce reaction intermediates with moderate binding energies, promoting a spillover to the carbon nitride support and thereby serving as bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Spectroscopic Study of Five-Coordinated Thermal Treated Alumina Formation: FTIR and NMR Applying

This work represents research into materials designed to improve the environment. The study was carried out on aluminum hydroxide xerogels and alumina catalysts obtained by the Controlled Double Jet Precipitation (CDJP) process at different pH values. It has been shown that the pH of the CDJP process determines the content of aluminum-bound nitrate ions in the aluminum hydroxide. These ions are removed at a higher temperature than the decomposition of ammonium nitrate. The high content of aluminum-bound nitrate ions determines the structural disorder of the alumina and the high content of the penta-coordinated alumina catalyst.

Approaching Molecular Definition on Oxide-Supported Single-Atom Catalysts

ConspectusSingle-atom catalysts (SACs) offer unique advantages such as high (noble) metal utilization through maximum possible dispersion, large metal-support contact areas, and oxidation states usually unattainable in classic nanoparticle catalysis. In addition, SACs can serve as models for determining active sites, a simultaneously desired as well as elusive target in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Due to the complexity of heterogeneous catalysts bearing a variety of different sites on metal particles and the respective support as well as at their interface, studies of intrinsic activities and selectivities remain largely inconclusive. While SACs could close this gap, many supported SACs remain intrinsically ill-defined due to complexities arising from the variety of different adsorption sites for atomically dispersed metals, hampering the establishment of meaningful structure-activity correlations. In addition to overcoming this limitation, well-defined SACs could even be utilized to shed light on fundamental phenomena in catalysis that remain ambiguous when studies are obscured by the complexity of heterogeneous catalysts.In this Account, we describe approaches to break down the complexity of supported single-atom catalysts through the careful choice of oxide supports with specific binding motives as well as the adsorption of well-defined ligands such as ionic liquids on single metal sites. An example of molecularly defined oxide supports is polyoxometalates (POMs), which are metal oxo clusters with precisely known composition and structure. POMs exhibit a limited number of sites to anchor atomically dispersed metals such as Pt, Pd, and Rh. Polyoxometalate-supported single-atom catalysts (POM-SACs) thus represent ideal systems for the in situ spectroscopic study of single atom sites during reactions as, in principle, all sites are identical and thus equally active in catalytic reactions. We have utilized this benefit in studies of the mechanism of CO and alcohol oxidation reactions as well as the hydro(deoxy)genation of various biomass-derived compounds. More so, the redox properties of polyoxometalates can be finely tuned by changing the composition of the support while keeping the geometry of the single-atom active site largely constant. We further developed soluble analogues of heterogeneous POM-SACs, opening the door to advanced liquid-phase nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and UV-vis techniques but, in particular, to electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) which proves powerful in determining catalytic intermediates as well as their gas-phase reactivity. Employing this technique, we were able to resolve some of the long-standing questions about hydrogen spillover, demonstrating the broad utility of studies on defined model catalysts.

Progress on metal-support interactions in Pd-based catalysts for automobile emission control

The interactions between metals and oxide supports, so-called metal-support interactions (MSI), are of great importance in heterogeneous catalysis. Pd-based automotive exhaust control catalysts, especially Pd-based three-way catalysts (TWCs), have received considerable research attention owing to its prominent oxidation activity of HCs/CO, as well as excellent thermal stability. For Pd-based TWCs, the dispersion, chemical state and thermal stability of Pd species, which are crucial to the catalytic performance, are closely associated with interactions between metal nanoparticles and their supporting matrix. Progress on the research about MSI and utilization of MSI in advanced Pd-based three-way catalysts are reviewed here. Along with the development of advanced synthesis approaches and engine control technology, the study on MSI would play a notable role in further development of catalysts for automobile exhaust control.

Novel Insights on the Metal-Support Interactions of Pd/ZrO2 Catalysts on CH4 Oxidation

With the environmental harm of unburnt CH₄ in natural gas vehicle exhaust, oxidizing CH₄ to CO₂ over catalysts at low temperatures becomes an exigent issue. Supported Pd catalysts possess higher CH₄ activity than other noble metal catalysts. A series of Pd/ZrO₂ catalysts were synthesized to research the potential relationship among Pd particle morphology, electron transfer, CH₄ oxidation mechanism, and catalytic activity. Characterizations show that the ratio of PdO_x facets to edge/corner sites on four catalysts increases in the order of PZ85 ≈ PZ40 < PZ55 < PZ70 because of the difference in content of surface -OH groups, and this order turns out to be the same as that of electron transfer intensity, revealing the degree of metal-support interactions. This kind of metal-support interaction in PZ70 can be helpful to accelerate CH₄ combustion via promoting the break of the C-H bond and dissociation of CO₃* according to density functional theory studies. T₉₀ of the PZ70 catalyst with optimum catalytic activity reaches 331 °C.

Ordered Hierarchical Porous Structure of PtSn/3DOMM-Al2O3 Catalyst for Promoting Propane Non-Oxidative Dehydrogenation

Herein, the hierarchical porous catalyst of 3-dimensional ordered macro-mesoporous (3DOMM) Al₂O₃ supported active PtSn nanoparticles (NPs) was prepared by the combined synthesized path of evaporation-induced self-assembly with colloid crystal template (EISA-CCT) methods. The hierarchical macro-mesoporous composite structure can markedly increase the specific surface area, accommodate the diffusion of propene, and decrease the number of surface acid sites. In addition, the special surface property and pore structure of 3DOMM-Al₂O₃ can modify the interaction between metals and substrates, as well as stabilize the metal nanoparticle, which promotes the formation of a highly active and stable PtSn phase. The PtSn/3DOMM-Al₂O₃ catalyst exhibits higher productivity and stability than PtSn/Al₂O₃ catalysts with macropore and mesopore structures. The PtSn/3DOMM-Al₂O₃ catalyst displays the best catalytic performance with propylene selectivity over 95% at a propane conversion of 33.9%. The study of the ordered hierarchical porous structure of PtSn/3DOMM-Al₂O₃ catalysts can contribute to obtaining improved catalysts in industrial processes.

Gas-phase reactions driven by polarized metal-metal bonding in atomic clusters

Multimetallic catalysts exhibit great potential in the activation and catalytic transformation of small molecules. The polarized metal-metal bonds have been gradually recognized to account for the reactivity of multimetallic catalysts due to the synergistic effect of different metal centers. Gas-phase reactions on atomic clusters that compositionally resemble the active sites on related condensed-phase catalysts provide a widely accepted strategy to clarify the nature of polarized metal-metal bonds and the mechanistic details of elementary steps involved in the catalysis driven by this unique chemical bonding. This perspective review concerns the progress in the fundamental understanding of industrially and environmentally important reactions that are closely related to the polarized metal-metal bonds in clusters at a strictly molecular level. The following topics have been summarized and discussed: (1) catalytic CO oxidation with O₂, H₂O, and NO as oxidants (2) and the activation of other inert molecules (e.g., CH₄, CO₂, and N₂) mediated with clusters featuring polarized metal-metal bonding. It turns out that the findings in the gas phase parallel the catalytic behaviors of condensed-phase catalysts and the knowledge can prove to be essential in inspiring future design of promising catalysts.

Single-Atom Catalysts on Covalent Triazine Frameworks: at the Crossroad between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysis

Heterogeneous single-site and single-atom catalysts potentially enable combining the high catalytic activity and selectivity of molecular catalysts with the easy continuous operation and recycling of solid catalysts. In recent years, covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) found increasing attention as support materials for particulate and isolated metal species. Bearing a high fraction of nitrogen sites, they allow coordinating molecular metal species and stabilizing particulate metal species, respectively. Dependent on synthesis method and pretreatment of CTFs, materials resembling well-defined highly crosslinked polymers or materials comparable to structurally ill-defined nitrogen-containing carbons result. Accordingly, CTFs serve as model systems elucidating the interaction of single-site, single-atom and particulate metal species with such supports. Factors influencing the transition between molecular and particulate systems are discussed to allow deriving tailored catalyst systems.

Fabrication of γ-Al2O3 Nanoarrays on Aluminum Foam Assisted by Hydroxide for Monolith Catalysts

Heat distribution and good adhesion of the washcoat on monolith catalysts are critical to improving catalytic activity and long-term stability. Compared with cordierite, metal foam presents a high thermal conductivity coefficient. Also, the availability of "washcoat" in situ grown on metal substrates opens the door to eliminating the problem of coating peeling. Generally, hydrothermal or thermal methods are used for the fabrication of in situ grown washcoat on metal substrates. In this research, the aluminum foam monolith vertically aligned Al₂O₃ nanowire array is successfully prepared at ambient temperature in an alkaline solution for the first time. Furthermore, the Pt-loaded Al₂O₃ nanowire array (0.5 g_Pt/L _monolith) is applied to C₂H₄ degradation. The catalyst converts 90% C₂H₄ at 147 °C with a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 20,000 h^-1. And a little decrease (1%) is observed in catalytic activity, even in 15 vol % water vapors. The catalysts show good thermal stability and water resistance property over 36 h at 300 °C. Above all, this study presents a simple way of in situ growth of washcoat on metal-substrate monolith with potentially scaled manufacturing. And the monolith catalyst shows good catalytic performance on C₂H₄, which can be applied for volatile organic compound treatment.

A multi-faceted structural, thermodynamic, and spectroscopic approach for investigating ethanol dehydration over transition phase aluminas

The surface-catalyzed dehydration of ethanol over transition phase aluminas was studied using a multi-faceted structural and thermodynamic characterization approach, which enabled a detailed examination of the reaction mechanism using INS.

Surface and Interface Coordination Chemistry Learned from Model Heterogeneous Metal Nanocatalysts: From Atomically Dispersed Catalysts to Atomically Precise Clusters

The surface and interface coordination structures of heterogeneous metal catalysts are crucial to their catalytic performance. However, the complicated surface and interface structures of heterogeneous catalysts make it challenging to identify the molecular-level structure of their active sites and thus precisely control their performance. To address this challenge, atomically dispersed metal catalysts (ADMCs) and ligand-protected atomically precise metal clusters (APMCs) have been emerging as two important classes of model heterogeneous catalysts in recent years, helping to build bridge between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. This review illustrates how the surface and interface coordination chemistry of these two types of model catalysts determines the catalytic performance from multiple dimensions. The section of ADMCs starts with the local coordination structure of metal sites at the metal-support interface, and then focuses on the effects of coordinating atoms, including their basicity and hardness/softness. Studies are also summarized to discuss the cooperativity achieved by dual metal sites and remote effects. In the section of APMCs, the roles of surface ligands and supports in determining the catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability of APMCs are illustrated. Finally, some personal perspectives on the further development of surface coordination and interface chemistry for model heterogeneous metal catalysts are presented.
