Abstract
BACKGROUND Reducing inflammation is central to the management of RA. However, commonly used markers such as CRP and ESR, along with the DAS-28 score, have shown limitations. Hematologic indices, such as platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR), and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), show potential as reliable indicators of inflammation in RA. This study evaluates these markers across different RA activity levels to identify effective biomarkers for distinguishing active RA from remission. MATERIALS AND METHODS 305 RA patients were enrolled in our study, diagnosed by ACR/EULAR 2010 criteria, and divided into four groups according to the DAS28-ESR score. 8 ml of blood were taken for a CBC test and serological tests such as rheumatoid factor (RF), anticyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies (anti-CCP), anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR), and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were assessed as potential markers of inflammation. RESULTS The mean age of RA patients was 51.7 years and a disease duration of 56.7 months. Significant differences in tender and swollen joints were observed between RA groups. Laboratory findings revealed higher CRP and ESR in active RA patients, while hemoglobin, hematocrit, and lymphocyte counts were higher in remission group. ROC analysis showed ESR, CRP, NLR, and PLR as potential markers for distinguishing active from remission RA, with ESR demonstrating the highest diagnostic accuracy. LMR could not differentiate between active and inactive forms of RA disease. CONCLUSION The NLR and PLR markers were significantly correlated with traditional inflammatory markers like CRP and ESR. These novel markers could be useful tools for evaluating RA activity, offering a cost-effective alternative to imaging techniques. Further research is needed to confirm their clinical utility.

Abstract
Background Sarcopenia is linked to an unfavorable prognosis in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Early identification and treatment of sarcopenia are clinically significant. This study aimed to create and validate a nomogram for predicting sarcopenia risk in RA patients, providing clinicians with a reliable tool for the early identification of high-risk patients. Methods Patients with RA diagnosed between August 2022 and January 2024 were included and randomized into training and validation sets in a 7:3 ratio. Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression analysis and multifactorial logistic regression analysis were used to screen the risk variables for RA-associated muscle loss and to create an RA sarcopenia risk score. The predictive performance and clinical utility of the risk model were evaluated by plotting the receiver operating characteristic curve and calculating the area under the curve (AUC), along with the calibration curve and clinical decision curve (DCA). Results A total of 480 patients with RA were included in the study (90% female, with the largest number in the 45-59 age group, about 50%). In this study, four variables (body mass index, disease duration, hemoglobin, and grip strength) were included to construct a nomogram for predicting RA sarcopenia. The training and validation set AUCs were 0.915 (95% CI: 0.8795-0.9498) and 0.907 (95% CI: 0.8552-0.9597), respectively, proving that the predictive model was well discriminated. The calibration curve showed that the predicted values of the model were basically in line with the actual values, demonstrating good calibration. The DCA indicated that almost the entire range of patients with RA can benefit from this novel prediction model, suggesting good clinical utility. Conclusion This study developed and validated a nomogram prediction model to predict the risk of sarcopenia in RA patients. The model can assist clinicians in enhancing their ability to screen for RA sarcopenia, assess patient prognosis, make early decisions, and improve the quality of life for RA patients.

Abstract
Background The causal associations between dietary intake and the risk and severity of Inflammatory Arthritis (IA) are currently unknown. Objective In this study, we aimed to investigate the causal relationship between nine dietary categories (30 types of diet) and IA using Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods We analyzed data from 30 diets and IA in a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that could influence the results of MR analyses were screened out through the Mendelian Randomization Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier (MR-PRESSO) test. SNPs were analyzed through two-sample bidirectional MR using inverse variance weighting, MR-Egger regression, and weighted median method. The multiplicity and heterogeneity of SNPs were assessed using MR-Egger intercept term tests and Cochran's Q tests. FDR correction was used to correct the p-values. Results IVW results showed that Beef intake [Odds ratio (OR) = 2.862; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.360-6.021, p = 0.006, p_fdr < 0.05] was positively associated with rheumatoid arthritis(RA); Dried fruit intake (OR = 0.522; 95% CI, 0.349-0.781, p = 0.002, p_fdr < 0.05), and Iron intake (OR = 0.864; 95%CI, 0.777-0.960, p = 0.007, p_fdr < 0.05) were negatively associated with RA, all of which were evidence of significance. Fresh fruit intake (OR = 2.528. 95% CI, 1.063-6.011, p = 0.036, p_fdr > 0.05) was positively associated with psoriatic arthritis (PsA); Cheese intake (OR = 0.579; 95% CI, 0.367-0.914, p = 0.019, p_fdr > 0.05) was negatively associated with PsA; both were suggestive evidence. Processed meat intake (OR = 0.238; 95% CI, 0.100-0.565, p = 0.001, p_fdr < 0.05) was negatively associated with reactive arthritis (ReA), a protective factor, and significant evidence. All exposure data passed the heterogeneity check (Cochrane's Q test p > 0.05) and no directional pleiotropy was detected. Leave-one-out analyses demonstrated the robustness of the causal relationship in the positive results. Conclusion Our study presents genetic evidence supporting a causal relationship between diet and an increased risk of IA. It also identifies a causal relationship between various dietary modalities and different types of IA. These findings have significant implications for the prevention and management of IA through dietary modifications.

Abstract
Chimeric Antigen-Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies have shown dramatic efficacy in treating relapsed and refractory cancers, especially B cell malignancies. However, these innovative therapies cause adverse toxicities that limit the broad application in clinical settings. Hematologic cytopenias, one frequently reported adverse event following CAR T cell treatment, are manifested as a disorder of hematopoiesis with decreased number of mature blood cells and subdivided into anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and neutropenia, which increase the risk of infections, fatigue, bleeding, fever, and even fatality. Herein, we initially summarized the symptoms, etiology, risk factors and management of cytopenias. Further, we elaborated the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the initiation and progression of cytopenias following CAR T cell therapy based on previous studies about acquired cytopenias. Overall, this review will facilitate our understanding of the etiology of cytopenias and shed lights into developing new therapies against CAR T cell-induced cytopenias.

Abstract
Nutrition is directly related to human health. It is very critical to determine
the nutritional status to prevent or diagnose diseases and create the right treatment
plans. The determination of the nutritional status provides an early diagnosis of growth
and development retardation such as malnutrition. It also plays a major role in
preventing diseases that may be caused by vitamin and mineral deficiencies. It helps in
the surveillance of one of the world's most serious health problems, namely “obesity.”
Different ways can be used to assess nutritional status. One of the best ways to assess
the nutritional and health status is to use biomarkers. A biomarker is a substance whose
detection indicates a specific disease state or a response to a therapeutic intervention.
Biomarkers are used to detect nutrient consumption and deficiencies as early as
possible, enabling early intervention for metabolic problems. Biomarkers also allow the
visualization of diseases that a person might develop or potentially have with a sample,
such as blood, tissue, and urine, from the person. Health interventions such as
nutritional advice will preserve health or promote rapid recovery. In this chapter, the
topic of biomarkers related to nutrition and nutrient deficiencies is discussed. The
existence of new possible biomarkers is also reviewed.

Abstract
Background Anemia is common in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Higher hemoglobin (Hb) levels may be associated with better clinical outcomes and patient-reported outcomes (PROs). To assess this hypothesis, we conducted two post hoc analyses in three sarilumab phase III studies: TARGET, MOBILITY, and MONARCH. Methods Pooled data from combination therapy from placebo-controlled MOBILITY (sarilumab + methotrexate) and TARGET (sarilumab + conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs [csDMARDs]) and monotherapy data from active-controlled MONARCH (sarilumab vs. adalimumab) studies were included. Associations between Hb levels and clinical measures and PROs were assessed over 24 weeks. The mean changes from baseline in clinical outcomes and PROs (to week 24) and radiographic outcomes (to week 52) were evaluated between low and normal Hb levels (based on the World Health Organization [WHO] criteria). Results From TARGET, MOBILITY, and MONARCH, 546, 1197, and 369 patients, respectively, were stratified according to Hb levels (low vs. normal). Over 24 weeks, higher Hb levels were found to be consistently associated with better clinical outcomes and PROs in combination therapy and monotherapy groups and were more pronounced among the patients treated with sarilumab than those treated with placebo and adalimumab. The mean change from baseline to week 24 in clinical efficacy measures and PROs was similar in patients with low vs. normal Hb at baseline. Differences between sarilumab and/or adalimumab, for all outcomes, were larger for low Hb subgroups. In MOBILITY, by week 52, the inhibition of progression of structural damage (assessed via Modified Total Sharp Score [mTSS]) was 84% (sarilumab 200 mg) and 68% (sarilumab 150 mg) vs. placebo in patients with low Hb and 97% (sarilumab 200 mg) and 68% (sarilumab 150 mg) vs. placebo in patients with normal Hb. Similar results were observed for other radiographic outcomes. Conclusions In these post hoc analyses, a consistent relationship was observed between higher Hb levels and better clinical outcomes and PROs in patients with RA. Irrespective of the baseline Hb levels, sarilumab treatment was associated with improvements in clinical measures and PROs over 24 weeks (improvements were more pronounced than those with adalimumab treatment) and mitigation of joint damage progression over 52 weeks. Abstract
BACKGROUND Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disorder which mainly affects small joints, occurs most commonly in middle-aged adults, and can be fatal in severe cases. The exact etiology of RA remains unknown. However, uncontrolled expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines can contribute to the pathogenesis of RA. AIM In the current study, we assessed the potential of serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-8, and C-C motif chemokine ligand (CCL)5 as early predictive markers for RA. METHODS In addition to clinical examination, blood samples were collected from 100 Saudi patients recently diagnosed with early RA for basic and serological tests, including rheumatoid factor (RF), C-reactive protein (CRP), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Sera of 32 healthy individuals were used as controls. Specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to quantify the serum IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-8, and CCL5 levels in the samples. RESULTS Our results indicated that RF, CRP, and ESR levels were higher in RA patients compared to controls. Furthermore, serum levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and CCL5, but not TNF-α, significantly increased in RA patients compared to controls. CONCLUSION Overall, the findings suggested that IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and CCL5 can be used as biomarkers in the early diagnosis of RA.

Extensive Study on Hematological, Immunological, Inflammatory Markers, and Biochemical Profile to Identify the Risk Factors in COVID-19 Patients. Int J Inflam 2022; 2022:5735546. Abstract
Background Tissue damage caused by COVID-19 could be detected by several clinical indicators including hematological, immunological, biochemical, and inflammatory markers. This study was to detect these clinical parameters to reveal the correlation between the factors and their roles in the development of COVID-19, to explore the hazard factors in severe cases. Materials and Methods A total of 200 participants of both sexes were included in the study, with an age range of (25–72) years, categorized into three main groups: 50 healthy individuals, 62 mild infected patients, and 88 severe infected patients with pneumonia. Different hematological and clinical parameters were included in the analysis (Basrah city, Iraq). Serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), ferritin, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were assessed for all participants using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The liver, renal, and cardiac functions were assessed by clinical chemistry testing. Results COVID-19 patients had leukocytosis, with an increased number of neutrophils and a decreased lymphocyte count, according to our findings. In regard to inflammatory parameters, both ESR and hs-CRP showed significant differences between the two groups, whereas IL-6 was significantly higher in the total severe group compared to the other two groups. Biochemical results revealed that each lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), ferritin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) had significant changes in the total severe group. Among pneumonic with an O2 requirement and pneumonic without an O2 requirement, there were significant differences in immunological and inflammatory markers (p > 0.05). The neutrophils-lymphocytes ratio (NLR) was highly elevated in severe who required O2. Moreover, IL-6, lymphocytes, and neutrophils were possible risk factors for COVID-19 infection, with the strongest influence of IL-6 with a high odds ratio (OR: 24.138, 95% CI: 8.437–30.65, p < 0.01). Furthermore, there were significant correlations among the indicators. Conclusion Each of IL-6, lymphocytes, and neutrophils might represent major factors in the severity of COVID-19 and IL-6 plays the main role in inducing the inflammatory and pathophysiology process that is known as the cytokine storm.

Abstract
Several studies have reported the toxicological implications of exposure to petroleum hydrocarbon fumes in animal models. There is little documentation on the effect of such exposure on oxidative stress levels and immune response. To our knowledge, no documentation of M1 polarization in macrophages in gasoline station male attendants. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the harmful effects of gasoline vapors in 62 male attendants (16-70 years) compared to 29 age- and sex-matched-unexposed controls. The attendants were recruited from Damietta governorate gasoline stations. Gasoline exposure induced a significant increase in tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) level (p < 0.05) as well as a slight but non-significant increase in the activity of acidic mammalian chitinase (AMCase) (p > 0.05). Further TNF-α/AMCase ratio was significantly increased (p < 0.01) in sera of the attendants when compared to those of the healthy controls. Also, the total leucocytic and lymphocytic counts were significantly increased (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). On contrary, neutrophils to lymphocytes ratio (NLR) and platelets to lymphocytes ratio (PLR) were significantly decreased (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). In addition, significant reduction in hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, plasma glutathione reduced form (GSH), and catalase, as well as superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in red blood cells were observed in the exposed attendants. As a result, malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) levels, and NO/AMCase ratio were significantly increased (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study inferred that prolonged gasoline exposure can mediate immune activation, especially M1 macrophages polarization, possibly via oxidative stress-mediated mechanism.

Abstract
Background and Aim Canine monocytotropic ehrlichiosis (CME), a tick-borne disease, leads to a systemic inflammatory response syndrome; it is thus important to assess the intensity of inflammation in order to treat it appropriately. The current study was designed to evaluate hematological, biochemical, and inflammatory parameters in dogs naturally infected with Ehrlichia canis compared with those in healthy dogs. We also assessed the relationship among several inflammation-related parameters and considered these parameters for use as inflammatory biomarkers of CME. Materials and Methods Twenty-eight dogs were divided into two groups based on the results of nested polymerase chain reaction for detecting E. canis, comprising a healthy group (n=11) and an infected group (n=17). A blood sample was collected from each dog to evaluate hematological, biochemical, and inflammatory parameters, with the obtained results being statistically compared between the groups. Moreover, the correlations of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were investigated in the 28 dogs. Results In the infected group, the mean levels of red blood cells, hemoglobin, and hematocrit were significantly lower than in the healthy group, while the mean lymphocyte and monocyte counts were higher. The mean levels of ESR and CRP were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the infected group, whereas no significant differences were found in IL-6 levels between the two groups. In the correlation analysis, ESR and CRP levels were highly correlated (p<0.01, r=0.531). Conclusion Elevated ESR and CRP levels were found in dogs naturally infected with E. canis, which also presented mild to moderate inflammation in this study. Moreover, CRP was significantly correlated with ESR, so ESR and CRP may serve as inflammatory biomarkers for monitoring CME.

Abstract
Interleukin (IL)-6 is produced locally in response to an inflammatory stimulus, and is able to induce systemic manifestations at distance from the site of inflammation. Its unique signaling mechanism, including classical and trans-signaling pathways, leads to a major expansion in the number of cell types responding to IL-6. This pleiotropic cytokine is a key factor in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and is involved in many extra-articular manifestations that accompany the disease. Thus, IL-6 blockade is associated with various biological effects beyond the joints. In this review, the systemic effects of IL-6 in RA comorbidities and the consequences of its blockade will be discussed, including anemia of chronic disease, cardiovascular risks, bone and muscle functions, and neuro-psychological manifestations.

Abstract
Purpose Erythroferrone (ERFE) is well acknowledged for its inhibitory function on hepcidin synthesis in the liver during stress erythropoiesis, thereby ensuring sufficient iron supply to bone marrow erythroblasts. Hepcidin plays an indispensable role in the pathogenesis of anemia of chronic disease (ACD). Thus, ERFE was suggested to protect against ACD in various diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is commonly involved with ACD and high hepcidin levels, with a further increase of the latter in active states. The present study is a case-control study that aimed to determine the pattern of ERFE expression in RA patients with concomitant ACD and study its relationship with hepcidin, erythropoietin (EPO) and disease activity. Patients and Methods Fifty-five RA patients with ACD were categorized into active and inactive RA using the disease activity score (DAS28); 15 healthy subjects were included as control subjects. ERFE was measured for patients and control subjects using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, in addition to testing for CBC, ESR, CRP, iron profile parameters and hepcidin. EPO was assessed for patients of both active and inactive RA groups. Results ERFE and hepcidin showed the highest levels in active RA; ERFE values were similar in control subjects and inactive RA patients, while hepcidin was significantly higher in inactive RA than control subjects. Patients with high ERFE levels had higher RBC, Hct, MCV, hepcidin and EPO levels. Stepwise regression analysis has identified DAS28 and disease duration as the best predictors of ERFE values, whereas ERFE and hepcidin were independent predictors of disease activity. Conclusion We introduce ERFE as a novel marker of RA activity. Although the inhibitory effect of ERFE on hepcidin is not evident, our results still indicate that ERFE may have a beneficial erythropoietic effect in the context of ACD in RA disease activity.

Abstract
Background Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) express growth factors and other cytokines that stimulate repair and control the immune response. MSCs are also immunoprivileged with low risk of rejection. Umbilical cord-derived MSCs (UCMSCs) are particularly attractive as an off-the-shelf allogeneic treatment in emergency medical conditions. We aim to determine the safety and efficacy of intravenous allogeneic infusion of UCMSCs (CLV-100) by Cytopeutics® (Selangor, Malaysia) in healthy volunteers, and to determine the effective dose at which an immunomodulatory effect is observed. Methodology. Umbilical cord samples were collected after delivery of full-term, healthy babies with written consent from both parents. All 3 generations (newborn, parents, and grandparents) were screened for genetic mutations, infections, cancers, and other inherited diseases. Samples were transferred to a certified Good Manufacturing Practice laboratory for processing. Subjects were infused with either low dose (LD, 65 million cells) or high dose (HD, 130 million cells) of CLV-100 and followed up for 6 months. We measured cytokines using ELISA including anti-inflammatory cytokines interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA), interleukin 10 (IL-10), pro-/anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 6 (IL-6), and the proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Results 11 healthy subjects (LD, n = 5; HD, n = 6; mean age of 55 ± 13 years) were recruited. All subjects tolerated the CLV-100 infusion well with no adverse reaction throughout the study especially in vital parameters and routine blood tests. At 6 months, the HD group had significantly higher levels of anti-inflammatory markers IL1-RA (705 ± 160 vs. 306 ± 36 pg/mL; p = 0.02) and IL-10 (321 ± 27 vs. 251 ± 28 pg/mL; p = 0.02); and lower levels of proinflammatory marker TNF-α (74 ± 23 vs. 115 ± 15 pg/mL; p = 0.04) compared to LD group. Conclusion Allogeneic UCMSCs CLV-100 infusion is safe and well-tolerated in low and high doses. Anti-inflammatory effect is observed with a high-dose infusion.

Abstract
Background Occupational and environmental exposure to several pollutant factors such as petroleum products containing benzene has toxic effects on different body systems. The hematopoietic system and immune system are among the affected systems. This study aims to investigate the effect of benzene exposure on some blood parameters of workers at several fuel stations in Basra city, as well as to reveal if the continuous exposure may induce an inflammatory response, which is reflected by changes in some hematological and inflammatory markers. Methods The study included two groups of males. The first group consists of 72 exposed workers at petrol stations in different locations in the Basra city. The other group is the control group, which consists of 75 nonexposed subjects (students and faculty members of the college). Different hematological parameters (WBC, RBC, HGB, MCV, MCHC, and MCH) have been evaluated. Serum concentrations of IL-6 and hs-CRP were estimated in all workers and nonexposed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results Data showed significant hematological changes in the exposed workers, and that anemia was a common disorder among them. Furthermore, there was a significant decline in WBC and different types of WBC including lymphocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils in the exposed workers. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and serum levels of interleukin-6 and hs-CRP were significantly higher in exposed workers than in nonexposed. A significant correlation was identified among blood parameters, while a strong inverse correlation was identified between both MCHC and ESR. The most significant inverse correlation was found between RBC and IL-6 and MCH with hs-CRP. In addition, a significant negative correlation was found between monocytes and IL-6. Conclusion The changes in all hematology and inflammatory parameters refer to damage in the hematopoietic system due to continuous exposure to vapors of petrol products, which also result in a significant increase in interleukin-6.

Abstract
Background Vitamin A plays a pivotal role in respiratory infection, accurate estimation of vitamin A status was recommended in planning and implementing interventions. As infections affect serum vitamin A productions, the real status need to be adjusted by acute phase protein (APP). Mycoplasma pneumoniae is an important cause of respiratory infection in children, the association between vitamin A concentrations and refractory Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (RMPP) remains unclear. Methods 181 MPP patients were enrolled in this retrospective study, adjusted vitamin A concentrations and other parameters were compared between RMPP and general-MPP (GMPP) patients. Multivariate logistic regression test was performed to evaluate the association between vitamin A levels and RMPP incidence, linear correlation tests were applied to evaluate correlation between vitamin A concentrations and fever duration, length of stay (LOS). Results Vitamin A concentrations in RMPP group were significantly lower than those in GMPP patients (P < 0.05), vitamin A (OR = 0.795, 95% C. I 0.669–0.946) and CRP (OR = 1.050, 95% C. I 1.014–1.087) were independently associated with RMPP incidence. Linear correlation tests found vitamin A concentrations were negatively correlated with fever duration and LOS (P < 0.001). Conclusions Serum vitamin A concentrations were independently associated with RMPP incidence, which may correlate with reduced incidence of RMPP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Paeoniae Radix Alba, the root of the plant Paeonia lactiflora Pall, is a common blood-enriching drug in traditional Chinese medicine. Its effectiveness in the clinical treatment of anaemia is remarkable, but its potential pharmacologic mechanism has not been clarified. METHODS In this study, the potential pharmacologic mechanism of Paeoniae Radix Alba in the treatment of iron-deficiency anaemia was preliminarily elucidated through systematic and comprehensive network pharmacology. RESULTS Specifically, we obtained 15 candidate active ingredients from among 146 chemical components in Paeoniae Radix Alba. The ingredients were predicted to target 77 genes associated with iron-deficiency anaemia. In-depth analyses of these targets revealed that they were mostly associated with energy metabolism, cell proliferation, and stress responses, suggesting that Paeoniae Radix Alba helps alleviate iron-deficiency anaemia by affecting these processes. In addition, we conducted a core target analysis and a cluster analysis of protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. The results showed that four pathways, the p53 signalling pathway, the IL-17 signalling pathway, the TNF signalling pathway and the AGE-RAGE signalling pathway in diabetic complications, may be major pathways associated with the ameliorative effects of Paeoniae Radix Alba on iron-deficiency anaemia. Moreover, molecular docking verified the credibility of the network for molecular target prediction. CONCLUSIONS Overall, this study predicted the functional ingredients in Paeoniae Radix Alba and their targets and uncovered the mechanism of action of this drug, providing new insights for advanced research on Paeoniae Radix Alba and other traditional Chinese medicines.

Effect of Interleukin and Hepcidin in Anemia of Chronic Diseases. Anemia 2020; 2020:3041738. Abstract
Background Anemia of chronic disease (ACD) also termed as the anemia of inflammation has been found to be associated with inflammations, chronic infections, and cancers, particularly in old age. Recent studies revealed that interleukin-6 (IL-6), a proinflammatory cytokine, and hepcidin, an antimicrobial hepatic peptide, play a key role in ACD pathogenesis. Patients and Methods. The study included 40 subjects with chronic diseases and 40 normal subjects of the same age group. Red cell indices, levels of IL-6 and hepcidin, and iron profile were measured in all participants using Bayer ADVIA 120, VITROS 5600, Integrated System/2008, and ELISA assay, respectively. Results The level of hemoglobin was considerably less in patients of chronic diseases referred to as "cases" than the normal subjects or "controls" (8.7 ± 1.5 vs. 13.2 ± 0.9). Red blood corpuscle (RBC) count, hematocrit (HCT) level, serum iron, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and serum total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) were found to be significantly lower in the cases as compared to controls (p < 0.001). Serum IL-6 and hepcidin levels were substantially higher in the cases than in the controls (p < 0.001). Conclusion This study detected a significant increase in serum IL-6 and hepcidin levels in patients with ACD than the controls. These findings offer an insight into the role played by both cytokine and peptide in the pathogenesis of ACD and thus provide a rationale for future use of novel drugs inhibiting their effects on iron metabolism.
