Abstract
Rice is a global staple food crop for nearly half of the world's population. Rice bran along with the germ are essential components of whole-grain rice and have immense potential for enhancing human nutrition. Rice bran has a unique composition and distinct requirements for processing before it can be consumed by humans when compared with other cereal brans. The comprehensive overview and synthesis of rice bran processing include extending the shelf life for functional food product development and extraction of bioactive components. This narrative review highlights established and innovative stabilization approaches, including solvent extraction and enzymatic treatments, which are critical methods and technologies for wider rice bran availability. The nutrient and phytochemical profiles of rice bran may improve with new cultivar development and food-fortification strategies. The postharvest agricultural practices and processing techniques can reduce food waste while also supporting growers to produce novel pigmented cultivars that can enhance nutritional value for human health.

Abstract
Agricultural waste (AW) presents significant environmental challenges if not effectively managed. Recycling AW as bio-organic fertilizers (BIOs) offers a sustainable solution, improving soil health, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers, and stimulating crop growth. This study investigated the effectiveness of BIOs generated from AW composted with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), including Enterobacter sp. R24, Bacillus tequilensis P8, and Pseudomonas azotoformans S81. BIOs produced from peanut shell, rice straw, duckweed, and rice bran were applied to rice seedlings under normal and saline (85 mM NaCl) conditions. The results revealed that PGPR-fermented BIOs utilized for only 15-30 days significantly improved seed germination and root length. BIO-duckweed and BIO-peanut proved high in nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium content, thereby increasing total biomass by 188% and 85%, respectively. In non-saline soil, BIO-peanut shell outperformed chemical fertilizers, promoting root growth and chlorophyll content. Additionally, BIO-rice straw gave a 58% reduction in proline levels under saline conditions, indicating stress reduction capacity. BIOs treatments demonstrated significant improvements in both nutrient availability and microbial diversity. Specifically, BIO-peanut shell and BIO-duckweed increased phosphate availability in soil by 143.26%, 13.80% over control soil and 7.23%, 30.69% over chemical treatment, respectively. The denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis further revealed a noticeable increase in microbial diversity in soils treated with BIOs, which was absent in untreated soil. Indeed, BIO-rice straw promoted the development of five distinct bacterial genera in saline condition, underscoring BIOs' ability to enhance the microbial community structure. The study highlights the potential of BIOs from AW combined with PGPRs to enhance rice growth under extreme salt stress. This sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers enhances soil health by increasing nutrient availability, microbial diversity, and promoting beneficial soil microbes, ultimately improving long-term soil resilience and fertility.

Abstract
Rice bran (RB) is a rice processing by-product recognized to be a source of bioactive compounds, including γ-oryzanol and fatty acids, which have interesting bioactivities such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. This study aims to optimize the supercritical fluid extraction process for recovering these high-value compounds from rice bran with improved bioactivity. A Central Composite Face-Centered Design was employed to optimize the extraction process by varying the temperature (40-80 °C) and pressure (200-500 bar). The optimal extraction conditions were identified at 500 bar and 62 °C that led to the extraction of 17.3% mass yield with 784.5 mg of fatty acids and 36.6 mg of γ-oryzanol per gram of extract, striking a balance between extraction yield and bioactive concentrations. When compared with conventional extractions with n-hexane, supercritical fluid extraction showed similar global yield (18.0 vs. 17.3%) and FA concentration (130.14 vs. 135.70 mg/g of RB) but higher selectivity and extraction yield for γ-oryzanol (18.0 vs. 36.4 mg/g extract; 3.3 vs. 6.3 mg/g of RB). Cellular antioxidant activity assays showed that both extracts reduced the quantity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) up to 50% in Caco-2 cells submitted to oxidative stress. Importantly, supercritical fluid extract was more effective in inhibiting colorectal cancer cell growth (EC50 = 0.9 mg/mL vs. 1.15 mg/mL) than the hexane extract, and this effect was more pronounced than that obtained for pure γ-oryzanol in the same concentration range. These findings highlight the potential of supercritical fluid technology to develop rice bran extracts with antioxidant and antiproliferative properties, underlining the promising applications of this technology in the field of natural product extraction.

Abstract
High-pressure processing (HPP) enhances food safety and shelf life by inactivating microorganisms and preserving food quality, yet its effectiveness in low-humidity environments has not been evaluated. This study investigated the effects of HPP at 500 MPa for 15 min across varying hydration levels (15, 30, 60, 77 %) on rice bran (RB), aiming to identify microbial effectiveness, besides techno-functional and physicochemical properties. HPP effectively reduced mesophilic bacteria, molds and yeast of RB at > 15 % hydration level, achieving reductions of up to 4 logarithmic cycles in the latter, nearing the detection limit of the method. However, it did not significantly impact spore inactivation. HPP treatment of ≥ 30 % hydrated RB induced particles aggregation and a honeycomb formation. The interaction between hydration and HPP treatment significantly affected the distribution of total dietary fibers, with an increase in soluble dietary fiber from 8.73 g/100 g to 11.03 g/100 g after HPP treatment at 15 % hydration level. Protein solubility was enhanced by hydration (15, 30 and 60 %), and peroxide values decreased after HPP treatment at low hydration (≤30 %) but increased when applied to high hydrated (>30 %) RB. Emulsifying activity decreased upon HPP treatment of highly hydrated RB (≥60 %), but more stable emulsions were achieved after HPP, regardless of the hydration level. Therefore, this study highlights the potential of HPP as a sustainable approach to enhance the utilization of rice bran in food applications, addressing existing knowledge gaps regarding its processing under different moisture conditions.

Abstract
Cereal crops have been integral to human sustenance since the Neolithic era which have earned significant attention as staple foods. The year-round cultivation and consumption of cereal-based products have led to the escalating global production of cereals and a rise in industrial processing which results in significant waste generation. These wastes contain high-value nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. Due to their dense nutritional values, there is a need to link the diverse array of nutrients in major cereal wastes and by-products to their functionalities and relevant industrial applications. This will not only promote sustainable waste management but also economic stability. Existing studies on cereal research were investigated using informetric analysis to provide a quantitative outlook and identify key trends, research priorities, and gaps in cereal studies. Overall, this review presents a comprehensive update on the past, present, and future of sustainable cereal waste valorization, highlighting previous studies and providing insights for future exploration of these biowastes.

Abstract
Valorization of agri-food residues has garnered significant interest for obtaining value-added compounds such as enzymes or bioactive molecules. Rice milling by-products, such as rice bran, have limited commercial value and may pose environmental challenges. Filamentous fungi are recognized for their ability to grow on residues and for their capacity to produce large amounts of metabolites and enzymes of industrial interest. Here, we used filamentous fungi to produce enzyme cocktails from rice bran, which, due to its polysaccharide composition, serves as an ideal substrate for the growth of fungi producing cellulases and xylanases. To this end, sixteen fungal strains were isolated from rice bran and identified at the species level. The species belonged to the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Mucor. The Aspergillus species displayed the highest efficiency in cellulase and xylanase activities, especially A. niger var. phoenicis and A. amstelodami. A. terreus, A. tritici, and A. montevidensis stood out as xylanolytic isolates, while P. parvofructum exhibited good cellulase activity. A. niger var. phoenicis followed by A. terreus showed the highest specific enzymatic activities of α- and β-D-galactosidase, α-L-arabinofuranosidase, α- and β-D-glucosidase, and β-D-xylosidase. Additionally, proteomic analysis of A. terreus, A. niger var. phoenicis, and P. parvofructum exoproteomes revealed differences in enzyme production for rice bran degradation. A. niger var. phoenicis had the highest levels of xylanases and cellulases, while P. parvofructum excelled in proteases, starch-degrading enzymes, and antifungal proteins. Finally, two Penicillium isolates were notable as producers of up to three different antifungal proteins. Our results demonstrate that filamentous fungi can effectively valorize rice bran by producing enzyme cocktails of industrial interest, along with bioactive peptides, in a cost-efficient manner, aligning with the circular bio-economy framework.

Abstract
Purpose: This study explores the impact of brown rice bran powder (BRBP), known for its beneficial components, such as dietary fiber and γ-oryzanol, on individuals suffering from metabolic syndrome (MetS). Subjects/Methods: In this eight-week open-label controlled trial, fifty participants with MetS were randomly assigned to either a control group, which received a standard diet (SDiet), or an intervention group, which incorporated 15 grams of BRBP daily into their diet. Demographic, anthropometric and clinical data were collected, and blood samples were taken to assess metabolic factors and antioxidant enzyme activities. Additionally, the participants completed the gastrointestinal symptom rating scale questionnaire. Results: Analysis of covariance controlled for the baseline levels and medication consumptions revealed that postthis trial, compared to the controls, patients who received BRBP showed significant reductions in BMI (P-value = 0.001; effect size (ES): -1.13), waist circumference (P-value < 0.001; ES: -1.28), total-cholesterol (P-value = 0.028; ES: -0.74), LDL-cholesterol (P-value = 0.002; ES: -0.86), blood sugar (P-value = 0.013; ES: -0.82), as well as triglyceride glucose (TyG)-BMI index (as a marker of insulin resistance) (P-value < 0.001; ES: -1.35). Further, BRBP resulted in significant improvements in antioxidant enzyme activities, including glutathione peroxidase (P-value = 0.010; ES: 0.86), superoxide dismutase serum activities (P-value = 0.021; ES: 0.78), and constipation rate (P-value = 0.018; ES: -0.85) compared to SDiet alone. However, no significant changes were found regarding levels of triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, glutathione, catalase and blood pressure after the trial. Conclusion: The findings of this trial support the weight-reducing, hypocholestrolemic, anti-hyperglycemic, and antioxidative effects of adding BRBP to SDiet that is prescribed for MetS patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dyslipidemia, a leading risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), significantly contributes to global morbidity and mortality. Rice bran, rich in bioactive compounds such as γ-oryzanol and tocotrienols, has demonstrated promising lipid-modulating effects. OBJECTIVE This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of rice bran on lipid profiles, including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and identify factors influencing its efficacy across different populations and intervention conditions. METHODS A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published up to November 2024. Effect sizes were calculated as mean differences with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses were performed based on intervention form, dosage, duration, region, and participant characteristics. Heterogeneity was estimated by the I2 statistic, and sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess the robustness of the findings. RESULTS Eleven RCTs involving 572 participants met the inclusion criteria. Pooled results showed that rice bran consumption significantly reduced TG (-15.13 mg/dL; 95% CI: -29.56, -0.71), TC (-11.80 mg/dL; 95% CI: -19.35, -4.25), and LDL-C (-15.11 mg/dL; 95% CI: -24.56, -5.66) with moderate heterogeneity (I2 = 38.1-63.0%). No significant changes were observed for HDL-C. Subgroup analyses showed that rice bran oil had greater effects on TC and LDL-C than whole rice bran. High-dose interventions (≥30 g/mL) and longer durations (>4 weeks) yielded stronger effects. Asian populations demonstrated greater reductions compared to Western populations. CONCLUSION Rice bran, especially in the form of rice bran oil, significantly improves lipid profiles, supporting its role as a functional food for CVD prevention. Future research should focus on long-term studies with diverse populations to confirm its efficacy and explore underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent degenerative joint disease, marked by cartilage degeneration, synovitis, and subchondral bone changes. The absence of effective drugs and treatments to decelerate OA's progression highlights a significant gap in clinical practice. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent cell death driven by lipid peroxidation, has emerged as a research focus in osteoarthritic chondrocytes. This form of cell death is characterized by imbalances in iron and increased lipid peroxidation within osteoarthritic chondrocytes. Key antioxidant mechanisms, such as Glutathione Peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and the Nuclear Factor Erythroid 2-Related Factor 2 (NRF2) pathway, are vital in countering ferroptosis in osteoarthritic chondrocytes. This review collates recent findings on ferroptosis in osteoarthritic chondrocytes, emphasizing iron regulation, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidative responses. It also explores emerging therapeutics aimed at mitigating OA by targeting ferroptosis in chondrocytes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We previously documented the beneficial effects of rice bran oil (RBO) on cardiac function and atherogenic cardiometabolic factors in men with coronary artery disease. Therefore, the existing evidence in this area aims to be expanded by investigating the impact of adding RBO to a daily standard diet on emerging insulin resistance surrogate markers, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant status, and metabolic disturbances in individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) through an open-label controlled trial. METHODS A total of 50 overweight/obese adults (mean body mass index (BMI) = 31.08 kg/m2) with at least 3 MetSyn components were randomly allocated to either the control group, which received a standard diet plan, or the intervention group, which was supplemented with 30 g/d RBO for 8 weeks. BMI, MetSyn components, metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR), triglyceride‒glucose‒BMI (TyG‒BMI), malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and plasma polyphenol levels were measured before and after this open-label trial. RESULTS Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) adjusted for baseline values revealed that, compared with patients who received only a standard diet, those who were supplemented with 30 g/d RBO presented significantly lower total cholesterol (P value = 0.005; effect size (ES):-0.92), LDL-cholesterol (P value = 0.048; ES:-0.62), fasting blood glucose (P value = 0.014; ES:-0.77), MDA (P value = 0.002; ES: -1.01), METS-IR (P value < 0.001; ES: -1.24), and TyG-BMI (P value = 0.007; ES:-0.85) after 8 weeks. Additionally, RBO consumption resulted in significantly higher levels of HDL-C (P value = 0.004; ES:0.94) and TAC (P value < 0.0001; ES:2.05). However, no significant changes were noted in BMI, waist circumference, serum triglycerides, plasma polyphenols, or blood pressure. CONCLUSION Although the current findings suggest that the hypocholesterolemic, antihyperglycemic, and antioxidative effects of 30 g/d RBO seem to be promising for MetSyn patients, they should be considered preliminary. Therefore, further well-designed clinical trials with larger sample sizes and longer durations are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Pursuing enhanced nutritional value in bakery products through technological advancements and new recipes is a promising facet of the food industry. This study focuses on incorporating rice and buckwheat brans, additional raw materials rich in biologically active substances, into bakery products. Utilizing a second-order rotatable plan, optimal ratios were determined-5% rice bran and 10% buckwheat bran. The application of these brans influenced dough and bread quality, reducing sugar content by 5% in dry form and 29% in the fermented brew, potentially aiding in diabetes prevention and cholesterol control. Introducing brans, especially in fermented brew, positively impacted microbiological stability, reducing the risk of mold and potato disease. The developed bread technology using rice and buckwheat brans in fermented brew significantly increased nutritional value, satisfying adult daily protein needs by 31.2%, fats by 15%, and dietary fibers by 18.4%. This innovative approach ensures a sufficient intake of essential vitamins and minerals, showcasing a promising avenue for creating healthier and more nutritious bakery products.

Abstract
In the present study, a synbiotic coating of flaxseed mucilage, defatted rice bran carbohydrate, and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. Lactis BB12 was fabricated for coating dried mango slices (M-P-C). The control samples contained only probiotic bacteria without coating (M-P). Several quality parameters (moisture, weight loss, shrinkage percentage, pH, firmness, and color) were assessed on specific storage circumstances (25°C, relative humidity (RH) = 22%.). In addition, the survival of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. Lactis BB12 was evaluated on storage and under simulated gastrointestinal (GI) conditions. According to the results, the log number of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. Lactis BB12 reached 8.1 and 6.2 for coated and uncoated samples, respectively, during the 45 days storage at 25°C (>6 log CFU (log colony-forming units)/g) and at finished stage of in vitro gastrointestinal circumstances, the log number of probiotic bacterial count reached 6.8 and 4 for coated and uncoated samples, respectively. The coating resulted in significantly less weight loss, moisture loss, and shrinkage of the mango slices than uncoated ones (p < .05). The growth of yeasts and molds was undetectable in both samples. The results of acceptance experiments for M-P and M-P-C dried mango samples showedthat there were no significant differences between M-P and M-P-C samples (p >.05), indeed in the case of purchase intention and overall acceptability. After reading the text highlighting, there was no significant difference in all attributes of M-P-C samples pre and post of reading text highlighting. It could be concluded that the synbiotic coating of mango slices improved the quality characteristics of the dried mango as well as viability of the probiotic bacteria at storage time and under simulated gastrointestinal conditions.

Abstract
To investigate the morphological changes of insoluble fiber and their effects on microbiota modulation, particularly Bacteroides, rice bran insoluble fibers were extruded at different feed moisture levels (E20, E40, and E60). The physicochemical properties and SEM revealed that E20 exhibited the highest water holding capacity and displayed the most fragmented edges. E40 had the highest swelling holding capacity and displayed the most lamellar gaps. E60 showed minimal change in physicochemical properties but had a rough surface. After 48h fermentation, E40 showed the highest levels of Bacteroides and SCFAs. E20 and E60 resulted in a modest increase in Bacteroides abundance. SEM showed that bacteria were attached to fragmented edges, loosened lamellar gaps, and rough surfaces of the extruded insoluble fibers. The results suggested that Bacteroides gained a competitive advantage within the extrusion treatment created structural changes. Extrusion treatment can be used to generate specific niches favorable for Bacteroides.

Abstract
Globally, 50% of people consume rice (Oryza sativa), which is among the most abundant and extensively ingested cereal grains. Rice bran is a by-product of the cereal industry and is also considered a beneficial waste product of the rice processing industry. Rice bran oil (RBO) is created from rice bran (20-25 wt% in rice bran), which is the outermost layer of the rice kernel; has a lipid content of up to 25%; and is a considerable source of a plethora of bioactive components. The main components of RBO include high levels of fiber and phytochemicals, including vitamins, oryzanols, fatty acids, and phenolic compounds, which are beneficial to human health and well-being. This article summarizes the stabilization and extraction processes of rice bran oil from rice bran using different techniques (including solvent extraction, microwaving, ohmic heating, supercritical fluid extraction, and ultrasonication). Some studies have elaborated the various biological activities linked with RBO, such as antioxidant, anti-platelet, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, anti-mutagenic, aphrodisiac, anti-depressant, anti-emetic, fibrinolytic, and cytotoxic activities. Due to the broad spectrum of biological activities and economic benefits of RBO, the current review article focuses on the extraction process of RBO, its bioactive components, and the potential health benefits of RBO. Furthermore, the limitations of existing studies are highlighted, and suggestions are provided for future applications of RBO as a functional food ingredient.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Rice (Oryza sativa L.), a staple food for a significant portion of the global population, has been recognized for its traditional medicinal properties for centuries. Rice bran, a by-product of rice milling, contains many bioactive compounds with potential pharmaceutical and therapeutic benefits. In recent years, research has highlighted the anti-inflammatory potential of rice bran, contributed by the bioactive components concentrated in their bran but, unfortunately, entrapped in the bran matrix, with limited bioavailability. Previous studies have reported that the enzymatic treatment of rice bran improves the bran's bioactive compound profile but did not investigate its impact on chronic conditions such as inflammation. AIM OF THE STUDY This study investigates the anti-inflammatory effects of endo-1,4-β-xylanase (ERB) and Viscozyme (VRB) treated red rice bran extracts against lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in RAW264.7 macrophages in comparison with non-enzyme-treated bran (CRB). Further established their efficacy with known anti-inflammatory compounds-ferulic acid (FA), catechin (CAT), γ-tocopherol (GTP), and γ-oryzanol (ORZ). MATERIALS AND METHODS The RAW 264.7 macrophage cells were pre-treated with non-toxic concentrations (10-200 μg/mL) of FA, CAT, GTP, ORZ, CRB, ERB, and VRB, followed by inflammatory stimulation with LPS for 24 h. Further, the cell supernatant and pellets were harvested to study the anti-inflammatory effects by evaluating and measuring their efficacy in inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, IL-1β) and mediators (ROS, NO, PGE2, COX2, iNOS) through biochemical, ELISA, and mRNA expression studies. RESULTS The findings showed that both ERB and VRB effectively inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory markers (TNF-α, IL-6) and mediators (ROS, NO, PGE2) by downregulating mRNA expressions of inflammatory genes (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, COX2, iNOS) and demonstrated anti-inflammatory efficacy higher than CRB. On comparison, ERB demonstrated exceptional efficacy by causing a reduction of 48% in ROS, 20% in TNF-α, and 23% in PGE2 at 10 μg/mL, surpassing the anti-inflammatory capabilities of all the bioactive compounds, FA and ORZ, respectively. At the same time, VRB exhibited remarkable efficacy by reducing NO production by 52% at 200 μg/mL and IL-6 by 66% at 10 μg/mL, surpassing FA, CAT, ORZ, and GTP. Further, ERB downregulated the mRNA expression of IL-10 and iNOS, while VRB downregulated TNF-α, IL-1β, and COX2 expression. Both extracts equally downregulated IL-6 expression at 10 μg/mL, demonstrating the efficacy more remarkable/on par with established anti-inflammatory compounds. CONCLUSIONS Overall, enzyme-treated rice bran/extract, particularly ERB, possesses excellent anti-inflammatory properties, making them promising agents for alternatives to contemporary nutraceuticals/functional food against inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the viability of replacing rice bran with spent coffee grounds (SCG) in the diets of Oreochromis niloticus (average body weight, 48.8 ± 0.42 g). The fish were randomly allocated into four sets of three groups each and placed in net cages (1 m × 2 m × 0.5 m) at a density of 30 fish per cage. They were fed diets with four different replacement levels: 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% of SCG over a period of 90 days. Growth and serum biochemical indices were monitored three times at 30, 60, and 90 days. During the experiment, there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) observed in growth indices, including weight gain (WG), daily WG, specific growth rate, feed conversion rate, protein efficiency ratio, and survival rate among the groups at 30, 60, and 90 days. Serum biochemical indices, such as aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase, showed a similar trend with significant differences observed only on day 30, while the lowest and highest levels were found in the control and 15% SCG replacement groups, respectively. For total cholesterol, a significantly different result was found only on day 30. However, these differences were not sustained in subsequent assessments. Conversely, serum glucose, total protein, albumin, and globulin remained unaffected by SCG replacement throughout the experiment. The findings indicate that replacing rice bran with up to 15% SCG did not adversely impact the growth performance or key serum biochemical indices of Nile tilapia. To the researchers' knowledge, these findings are the first in the field to substitute SCG for rice bran, opening a new avenue for further research.

Abstract
Sakuranetin plays a key role as a phytoalexin in plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, and possesses diverse health-promoting benefits. However, mature rice seeds do not contain detectable levels of sakuranetin. In the present study, a transgenic rice plant was developed in which the promoter of an endosperm-specific glutelin gene OsGluD-1 drives the expression of a specific enzyme naringenin 7-O-methyltransferase (NOMT) for sakuranetin biosynthesis. The presence of naringenin, which serves as the biosynthetic precursor of sakuranetin made this modification feasible in theory. Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) validated that the seeds of transgenic rice accumulated remarkable sakuranetin at the mature stage, and higher at the filling stage. In addition, the panicle blast resistance of transgenic rice was significantly higher than that of the wild type. Specially, the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) imaging was performed to detect the content and spatial distribution of sakuranetin and other nutritional metabolites in transgenic rice seeds. Notably, this genetic modification also did not change the nutritional and quality indicators such as soluble sugars, total amino acids, total flavonoids, amylose, total protein, and free amino acid content in rice. Meanwhile, the phenotypes of the transgenic plant during the whole growth and developmental periods and agricultural traits such as grain width, grain length, and 1000-grain weight exhibited no significant differences from the wild type. Collectively, the study provides a conceptual advance on cultivating sakuranetin-rich biofortified rice by metabolic engineering. This new breeding idea may not only enhance the disease resistance of cereal crop seeds but also improve the nutritional value of grains for human health benefits.

Abstract
Various endogenous and exogenous stimuli can result in an inflammatory response and collagen deposition in the liver, which affect liver function and increase the risk of developing liver cirrhosis and cancer. Rice bran, the main by-product of rice milling, contains various nutrients which possess hepatoprotective activities. In this study, we investigated the effects of rice bran on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis in mice. Mice were fed a rice-bran-containing diet (10% rice bran w/w) or a standard diet with or without an injection of 20% CCl4 to induce liver fibrosis. Our results showed that feeding a rice-bran-containing diet could alleviate CCl4-induced liver damage, collagen deposition, and expressions of fibrosis-related genes, including α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), collagen 1a2 (COL1A2), and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) in liver tissues. Moreover, consumption of rice bran enhanced phase II detoxification and antioxidant gene expressions, including Gsta3, Gstp1, Catalase, SOD1, SOD2, and SOD3. Treatment with γ-oryzanol, the major bioactive compound in rice bran, decreased the sensitivity of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) to TGF-β1-induced α-SMA, COL1A2, and phosphorylated smad2 expressions. In conclusion, a rice-bran-containing diet may have beneficial effects on liver fibrogenesis through increased antioxidant and detoxification activities. γ-Oryzanol, the major bioactive compound of rice bran, can inhibit activation of HSCs.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent joint disorder pathologically correlated to chondrocyte ferroptosis. Gamma-oryzanol (γ-Ory), as a first-line drug for autonomic disorders, aroused our interest because of its antioxidant, lipid-lowering, and hypoglycemic potential. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential impact and mechanism of γ-Ory in treating OA. And the inhibition of γ-Ory in extracellular matrix molecule (ECM) degradation, ferroptosis, and Keap1-Nrf2 binding in IL-1β-exposed chondrocytes was detected via immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, and co-immunoprecipitation. Micro-CT, SO staining, and immunofluorescence have been conducted to assess the impact of γ-Ory treatment on ACLT-mediated OA in rats at both imaging and histological stages. We found that γ-Ory dose-dependently suppressed IL-1β-induced ECM deterioration and chondrocyte ferroptosis. Our animal experiments revealed that γ-Ory delayed ACLT-mediated OA development. Mechanistically, γ-Ory interfered with the binding of Keap1 to Nrf2 to promote the latter's nuclear import, thereby increasing the expression of detoxification enzymes. Summarily, our works support γ-Ory's potential as a candidate drug for the treatment of OA.

Abstract
Nutrient-dense, acceptable foods are needed in low-resource settings. Rice bran, a global staple byproduct of white rice processing, is rich in amino acids, fibers, and vitamins, when compared to other cereal brans. This pilot study examines the nutritional contribution of rice bran to the daily diets of mother-child pairs in rural southwest Guatemala. Thirty households were screened. Mothers (≥18 years) and children (6 to 24 months) completed 24 h dietary recalls at baseline and after 12 weeks (endline) for diet intake and diversity analyses. During biweekly visits for 12 weeks, households with <5 members received 14 packets containing 60 g of heat-stabilized rice bran, and those with ≥5 members received 28 packets. The macro- and micro-nutrient contributions of rice bran and whole, cooked black beans were included in dietary simulation models with average intakes established between the recalls and for comparison with dietary reference intakes (DRIs). A baseline child food frequency questionnaire was administered. The 27 mothers and 23 children with complete recalls were included in analyses. Daily maternal consumption of 10 g/d of rice bran plus 100 g/d of black beans resulted in all achieving at least 50% of the fiber, protein, magnesium, niacin, potassium, and thiamin DRIs. Daily child consumption of 3 g/d of rice bran plus 10 g/d of black beans resulted in all achieving at least 50% of the magnesium, niacin, phosphorous, and thiamine DRIs. For 15/17 food categories, male children had a higher intake frequency, notably for animal-source foods and coffee. Dietary rice bran coupled with black beans could improve nutritional adequacy, especially for fiber and key micro-nutrients, with broader implications for addressing maternal and child malnutrition in low-resource settings.

Abstract
Minor constituents exhibit certain antioxidant interactions in vitro, and the effects in different media are different. However, it is not clear whether there are antioxidant interactions in cells after digestion and absorption. We utilized the cellular antioxidant evaluation model in HepG2 cells to study the antioxidant interaction between α-tocopherol and γ-oryzanol, and the interaction mechanism of a binary mixture was also illustrated. A cellular antioxidant assay (CAA) model and a combined index (CI) method were firstly used to explore the antioxidant activity and interaction of the binary mixture in HepG2 cells. The CAA value was positively correlated with the single addition concentration, while the results displayed a biphasic tendency with increasing concentrations of the binary mixture. The combination of TO11 (1 μg mL-1 α-tocopherol and 10 μg mL-1 γ-oryzanol) showed the greatest antioxidant activity and synergistic effect, and the maximum CAA value reached up to 94.84 ± 4.2. Then the mechanism of the synergistic antioxidant effect of the binary mixture was explained from three aspects including cellular uptake, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and endogenous enzyme activity. The results demonstrated that the antioxidant interaction of the binary mixture in cells was related to cellular uptake of minor constituents, and the combination of TO11 exerted a synergistic effect by scavenging ROS and up-regulating glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, resulting in the strongest cellular antioxidant activity. This study throws light on the nature of antioxidant interaction between minor constituents, which may contribute to the development of related functional foods and rational dietary collocation.

Abstract
Cold-pressed oils are oils prepared from pressing plant materials with a screw or hydraulic press, yielding oils with little contamination of harmful chemicals and high content of nutrients and functional constituents. Cold-pressed oils have gained increasing recognition as food supplements for preventing and ameliorating body deterioration due to ageing and the progression of lifestyle diseases or non-communicable diseases. This article aimed to review their structure, bioactivity, and chromatographic analysis of the mostly found functional compounds in cold-pressed oils, including phytosterols, carotenoids, tocols (tocopherols and tocotrienols), phenolic compounds (flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, stilbenes, and lignans), and squalene.

Abstract
Rice (Oryza sativa) seeds contain a variety of metabolites, which not only provide energy for their own growth and development, but also are an important source of nutrition for humans. It is crucial to study the distribution of metabolites in rice seeds, but the spatial metabolome of rice seeds is rarely investigated. In this study, Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-MS) imaging was used to reveal the spatial distribution of free soluble sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose, and maltose), amino acids (9 essential amino acids and 2 amino acids affecting rice eating quality: L-aspartic acid and L-glutamic acid), and 4 metabolites in the flavonoids synthesis pathway (cinnamic acid, naringenin chalcone, naringenin, and dihydrokaempferol) in rice seed at the dough stage. It was found that the 4 free soluble sugars present similar spatial distribution, mainly distributed in the seed cortex and embryo with high abundance. The majority of amino acids are also concentrated in the rice cortex and embryo, while the others are abundant in the whole seed. Besides cinnamic acid distributed in the seed cortex and embryo, the naringenin chalcone, naringenin, and dihydrokaempferol were also found in the endosperm and had lower content. Furthermore, a colocalization phylogenetic tree according to the spatial distribution imaging of each metabolite was constructed. This study revealed the distribution diversity of metabolites in different segmentations of rice seed at the dough stage, providing clues for the nutritional differences between brown rice and white rice, and serving as a reference for people to target a healthy diet.

Abstract
In this study, we analyzed the differences in metabolites between semiwaxy japonica rice (Yangnongxiang 28 [YNX28]) and conventional japonica rice (Hongyang 5 [HY5]) before and after brown rice milling. The metabolites of brown and milled rice grains from the two rice varieties were analyzed by LC-MS-based nontargeted metabolomics. A total of 266 differentially abundant metabolites (DMs) were tentatively identified in brown rice grains of YNX28 (YNX28B) compared with milled rice grains of YNX28 (YNX28H), and these included 248 upregulated and 12 downregulated DMs. A total of 273 (234 upregulated and 39 downregulated) DMs were tentatively identified in brown rice grains of HY5 (HY5B) compared with milled rice grains of this variety (HY5H). Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway involved and enrichment analyses revealed that 53 and 7 metabolite pathways were enriched and significantly enriched (p < 0.05), respectively, in the DMs identified in YNX28B compared with YNX28H, and the main enriched pathways were related to starch and sucrose metabolism, glycerol phospholipid metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, and glycine, serine and threonine metabolism. Forty-six metabolite pathways were enriched in DMs identified in HY5B compared with HY5H, and these included 16 pathways that were significantly enriched (p < 0.05); in addition, the main enriched pathways were related to starch and sucrose metabolism, glycerol phospholipid metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, and glycine, serine and threonine metabolism. This study provides a theoretical reference for further on the changes in metabolites during rice processing and provides a basis for improving the nutritional quality in rice. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Original data were obtained regarding the changes of different metabolites in semiwaxy japonica rice and conventional japonica rice before and after processing. The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of metabolite loss in two rice varieties before and after processing. This paper reports on the differences of metabolites between the two types of japonica rice before and after processing, as well as the changes of key metabolites before and after processing, it also provides important theoretical basis for developing new rice varieties with good nutritional quality.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of three oil production methods on the physicochemical properties of dietary fiber from rice bran flour, and the hypolipidemic effects of the dietary fibers were investigated in vitro and in vivo. The particle size results showed that the organic-solvent-impregnated rice bran meal dietary fiber (N-RBDF) had the smallest average particle size and the aqueous enzymatic rice bran meal dietary fiber (E-RBDF) had the narrowest particle size distribution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results demonstrated that all three kinds of rice bran meal dietary fibers (RBDFs) were irregularly flaky. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) results revealed that the three RBDFs had similar reactive groups, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that all three RBDFs were cellulose type I crystals. The results of thermogravimetric analysis showed that the lignin content of N-RBDF was significantly lower than that of the other two. Among the three kinds of RBDFs, E-RBDF had higher water retention capacity, swelling capacity, oil holding capacity, and adsorption capacity for cholesterol and sodium bile salts. The results of experimental studies in hyperlipidemic rats showed that all three kinds of RBDFs significantly reduced triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and elevated high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in the serum of hyperlipidemic rats; they also significantly lowered malondialdehyde (MDA) and elevated total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities in the livers of rats. In addition, all three kinds of RBDFs decreased aminotransferase (ALT) and aminotransferase (AST) activity in serum and also improved liver steatosis and reduced atherosclerosis index (AI) in rats with hyperlipidemia. Our study provides a reference for the development and utilization of rice bran meal and the application of rice bran meal dietary fiber in food processing.

Abstract
Rice bran, a by-product of rice milling, is abundant in bioactive molecules and is highly recognized for its health-promoting properties, particularly in improving metabolic conditions. Building on this knowledge, we aimed to optimize the extraction conditions to maximize the functional efficacy of rice bran extract (RBE) and further validate its impact on lipid metabolism. We found that the optimized RBE (ORBE) significantly suppressed high-fat diet-induced weight gain, hyperlipidemia, and hepatosteatosis in mouse models. ORBE treatment not only suppressed lipid uptake in vivo, but also reduced lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells. Importantly, we discovered that ORBE administration resulted in activation of AMPK and inhibition of STAT3, which are both crucial players in lipid metabolism in the liver. Collectively, ORBE potentially offers promise as a dietary intervention strategy against hyperlipidemia and hepatosteatosis. This study underlines the value of optimized extraction conditions in enhancing the functional efficacy of rice bran.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common metabolic disease accompanied by cognitive impairment, hippocampal malfunctioning, and inflammation. Biobran/MGN-3, an arabinoxylan rice bran, has been shown to have an antidiabetic effect in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The present study investigates Biobran's effect against diabetes-induced cognitive impairment and synaptotoxicity in the hippocampus via oxidative stress and the IR/A/NF-κB signaling pathway in rats. Diabetes was induced via i.p. injection of streptozotocin (STZ) (40 mg/kg BW); STZ-treated rats were then administered Biobran (100 mg/kg BW) for 4 wks. Biobran supplementation improved motor coordination and muscular strength, as assessed by Kondziella's inverted screen test. Biobran also improved concentration levels of glutathione (GSH), antioxidant enzymes, acetylcholine (ACh), dopamine, serotonin, insulin receptor (IR), and alpha serine-threonine protein kinase (Akt); it protected against elevated levels of glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, oxidative stress markers, TBARS, NO, AChE, and MAO; and it significantly decreased inflammatory cytokines levels of IL-1β, NF-κB, TNF-α, and amyloid β1-42. Moreover, Biobran ameliorated hippocampal histological alterations. Immunohistochemical observations showed that Biobran reduced overexpression of hippocampal synaptophysin and Ki67 relative to untreated diabetic rats. Biobran may ameliorate hippocampal alterations in diabetic rats via its antidiabetic, antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic, and antioxidant effects.

Abstract
One of the major problems in food science is meeting the demand of the world's growing population, despite environmental limitations such as climate change, water scarcity, land degradation, marine pollution, and desertification. Preventing food from going to waste and utilizing nutritive by-products as food rather than feed are easy and powerful strategies for overcoming this problem. Rice is an important staple food crop for more than half of the world's population and substantial quantities of rice bran emerge as the main by-product of rice grain milling. Usually, rice bran is used as animal feed or discarded as waste. Although it is highly nutritious and comprises many bioactive compounds with considerable health benefits, the rapid deterioration of bran limits the exploitation of the full potential of rice bran. Hydrolytic rancidity is the main obstacle to using rice bran as food, and the enzyme inactivation process, which is termed stabilization, is the only way to prevent it. This study reviews the methods of stabilizing rice bran and other rice-milling by-products comprising rice bran in the context of the efficiency of the process upon storage. The effect of the process on the components of rice bran is also discussed.

Abstract
Rising incidences of life-style disorders like obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases are a matter of concern coupled with escalated consumption of highly refined and high energy foods with low nutrient density. Food choices of consumers have witnessed significant changes globally with rising preference to highly processed palatable foods. Thus, it calls food scientists, researchers and nutritionists' attention towards developing and promoting pleasant-tasting yet healthy foods with added nutritional benefits. This review highlights selected underutilized and novel ingredients from different food sources and their by-products that are gaining popularity because of their nutrient density, that can be employed to improve the nutritional quality of conventionally available empty-calorie foods. It also emphasizes on the therapeutic benefits of foods developed from these understudied grains, nuts, processing by-products of grains, fruits- and vegetable-byproducts and nutraceutical starches. This review aims to draw attention of food scientists and industrialists towards popularizing the utilization of these unconventional, yet nutrient rich foods sources in improving the nutritional profile of the conventional foods lacking in nutrient density.

Abstract
Defatted rice bran (DRB) is a by-product of rice bran derived after the oil extraction. DRB contains several bioactive compounds, including dietary fiber and phytochemicals. The supplementation with DRB manifests chemopreventive effects in terms of anti-chronic inflammation, anti-cell proliferation, and anti-tumorigenesis in the azoxymethane (AOM) and dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CRC) model in rats. However, little is known about its effect on gut microbiota. Herein, we investigated the effect of DRB on gut microbiota and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, colonic goblet cell loss, and mucus layer thickness in the AOM/DSS-induced colitis-associated CRC rat model. The results suggested that DRB enhanced the production of beneficial bacteria (Alloprevotella, Prevotellaceae UCG-001, Ruminococcus, Roseburia, Butyricicoccus) and lessened the production of harmful bacteria (Turicibacter, Clostridium sensu stricto 1, Escherichia-Shigella, Citrobacter) present in colonic feces, mucosa, and tumors. In addition, DRB also assisted the cecal SCFAs (acetate, propionate, butyrate) production. Furthermore, DRB restored goblet cell loss and improved the thickness of the mucus layer in colonic tissue. These findings suggested that DRB could be used as a prebiotic supplement to modulate gut microbiota dysbiosis, which decreases the risks of CRC, therefore encouraging further research on the utilization of DRB in various nutritional health products to promote the health-beneficial bacteria in the colon.

Abstract
Rice is a major cereal crop and a staple food for nearly 50% of people worldwide. Rice bran (RB) is a nutrient-rich by-product of rice processing. RB is rich in carbohydrates, fibers, proteins, lipids, minerals, and several trace elements (phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and manganese). The extraction process and storage have influenced RB extracts and RB oil's quality. The RB composition has also varied on the rice cultivars. The color of RB indicates the richness of the bioactive compounds, especially anthocyanins. γ-oryzanol, tocopherols, tocotrienols, and unsaturated fatty acids are major components of RB oil. It has been established that RB supplementation could improve the host's health status. Several preclinical and clinical studies have reported that RB has antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anticolitis, and antidiabetic properties. The beneficial biological properties of RB are partially attributed to its ability to alter the host microbiome and help to maintain and restore eubiosis. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and lung disease, account for 74% of deaths worldwide. Obesity is a global health problem and is a major reason for the development of NCDs. The medical procedures for managing obesity are expensive and long-term health supplements are required to maintain a healthy weight. Thus, cost-effective natural adjuvant therapeutic strategy is crucial to treat and manage obesity. Several studies have revealed that RB could be a complementary pharmacological candidate to treat obesity. A comprehensive document with basic information and recent scientific results on the anti-obesity activity of RB and RB compounds is obligatory. Thus, the current manuscript was prepared to summarize the composition of RB and the influence of RB on the host microbiome, possible mechanisms, and preclinical and clinical studies on the anti-obesity properties of RB. This study suggested that the consumption of RB oil and dietary RB extracts might assist in managing obesity-associated health consequences. Further, extended clinical studies in several ethnic groups are required to develop dietary RB-based functional and nutritional supplements, which could serve as an adjuvant therapeutic strategy to treat obesity.

Abstract
This study estimated that the combined effect of γ-Oryzanol and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) against high-fat diet (HFD)-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in rats also estimated some of their mechanisms of action. Adult male rats were divided into seven groups (n = 8 each) as control, control + NAC, control + γ-Oryzanol, HFD, HFD + NAC, HFD + γ-Oryzanol, and HFD + NAC + γ-Oryzanol. NAC was administered orally at a final concentration of 200 mg/kg, whereas γ-Oryzanol was added to diets at a concentration of 0.16. All treatments were conducted for 17 weeks and daily. Both NAC and γ-Oryzanol were able to reduce final body weights, fat weights, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, serum, and serum levels of liver function enzymes as well as the inflammatory markers such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukine-6 (IL-6), and leptin in HFD-fed rats. They also improved hepatic structure and glucose tolerance, increased adiponectin levels, and reduced serum and hepatic levels of triglycerides (TGs) and cholesterol (CHOL) in these rats. These effects were concomitant with a reduction in the hepatic levels of lipid peroxides (MDA) and serum levels of LDL-C, but also with an increment in the hepatic levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH). Interestingly, only treatment with γ-Oryzanol stimulated the mRNA levels of proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1) in the liver and white adipose tissue (WAT) of rats. Of note, the combination therapy of both drugs resulted in maximum effects and restored almost normal liver structure and basal levels of all the above-mentioned metabolic parameters. In conclusion, a combination therapy of γ-Oryzanol and NAC is an effective therapy to treat NAFLD, which can act via several mechanisms on the liver and adipose tissue.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease with frequent relapsing inflammation in the colon. Whole grains have been promoted as healthy and sustainable foods; however, the use of whole gains in UC is inconclusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ethanol extracts of rice bran (RBE) and whole-grain adlay seeds (ADE) on inflammation, oxidative stress, and colonic damage in UC. Male C57BL/6JNarl mice were intra-rectal injected twice with 2,4-dinitrobenzene sulfonic acid to induce (day 0) and reactivate (day 21) UC. Control mice were fed AIN-93M diet (R group) and injected with a vehicle. UC mice were fed AIN-93M diet (UC group) supplemented with RBE (RBE group) or ADE (ADE group) for 21 days. The results showed that the UC group had an increased disease activity index, plasma interleukin (IL)-6 and glutathione levels, microscopic injury scores, and inflammatory cytokine and chemokine levels in the colon and decreased colonic claudin-4 compared to the R group. RBE and ADE supplementation significantly reduced UC-elevated plasma IL-6 and colonic glutathione and pro-inflammatory cytokines and a chemokine. In addition, RBE and ADE supplementation significantly decreased T-helper-cell-associated cytokines in the plasma and colon. Moreover, RBE supplementation increased colonic IL-10 and tight junction protein claudin-4 levels, and ADE supplementation alleviated diarrhea in UC mice. In conclusion, these results suggest that RBE and ADE may mitigate colonic inflammation, oxidative stress, and damage in UC relapse.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a highly prevalent musculoskeletal disorder characterized by a local inflammatory response associated with the IL-1β/NLRP3 inflammasome positive feedback loop. Rice bran-derived gamma-oryzanol (Ory) as a sterol ferulate has attracted much attention due to its powerful anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic health effects. As a clinical pharmaceutical for autonomic disorders, Ory's role in musculoskeletal degenerative disease remains unknown. PURPOSE This study aims to validate the role of Ory in IVDD and explore the potential mechanism. STUDY DESIGN Establishing the in vitro and in vivo IVDD models to detect the protective effect and molecular mechanism of Ory. METHOD The anti-ECM degradation, antioxidant and anti-NLRP3 inflammasome activation effects of Ory on IL-1β-stimulated nucleus pulposus (NP) cells were assessed by immunoblotting and immunofluorescence, etc. MRI, S-O staining and immunohistochemistry were performed to estimate the effects of Ory administration on acupuncture-mediated IVDD in rats at imaging and histological levels. RESULTS Ory treatment inhibited IL-1β-mediated ECM degradation, oxidative stress and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in NP cells. By interfering with NF-κB signaling and ROS overproduction, Ory interrupted IL-1β/NLRP3-inflammasome positive cycle. In vivo experiments showed that Ory delayed acupuncture-mediated IVDD development. CONCLUSION Our results support the potential application of Ory as a therapeutic compound for IVDD.

Abstract
The growing demand for wood-based panels for buildings and furniture and the increasing worldwide concern for reducing the pressure on forest resources require alternatives to wood raw materials. The agricultural industry not only can provide raw materials from non-wood plants but also numerous residues and side streams. This review supplies an overview of the availability, chemical composition, and fiber characteristics of non-wood lignocellulosic materials and agricultural residues, i.e., grow care residues, harvest residues, and process residues, and their relevance for use in wood panel manufacturing. During the crop harvest, there are millions of tons of residues in the form of stalks, among other things. Usually, these are only available seasonally without using storage capacity. Process residues, on the other hand, can be taken from ongoing production and processed further. Fiber characteristics and chemical composition affect the panel properties. Alternatives to wood with long fibers and high cellulose content offer sufficient mechanical strength in different panel types. In general, the addition of wood substitutes up to approximately 30% provides panels with the required strength properties. However, other parameters must be considered, such as pressing temperature, adhesive type, press levels, and pretreatments of the raw material. The search for new raw materials for wood panels should focus on availability throughout the year, the corresponding chemical requirements and market competition. Panel type and production process can be adapted to different raw materials to fit niche products.

Abstract
Obesity and type 2 diabetes are both significant contributors to the contemporary pandemic of non-communicable diseases. Both disorders are interconnected and associated with the disruption of normal homeostasis in adipose tissue. Consequently, exploring adipose tissue differentiation and homeostasis is important for the treatment and prevention of metabolic disorders. The aim of this work is to review the consecutive steps in the postnatal development of adipocytes, with a special emphasis on in vivo studies. We gave particular attention to well-known transcription factors that had been thoroughly described in vitro, and showed that the in vivo research of adipogenic differentiation can lead to surprising findings.
