Photosynthesis governed by nanoparticulate titanium dioxide. The Pisum sativum L. case study

Wide availability of anthropogenic TiO2 nanoparticles facilitates their penetration into environment and prompts interactions with plants. They alter plants growth and change their nutritional status. In particular, metabolic processes are affected. In this work the effect of nanometric TiO2 on photosynthesis efficiency in green pea (Pisum sativum L.) was studied. Hydroponic cultivations with three Ti levels (10; 50 and 100 mg L-1) were applied. At all concentrations nanoparticles penetrated into plant tissues and were detected by the single particle ICP-MS/MS method. Nanoparticles altered the CO2 assimilation rate and gas exchange parameters (i.e. transpiration, stomatal conductance, sub-stomatal CO2 concentration). The most pronounced effects were observed for Ti 50 mg L-1 cultivation where photosynthesis efficiency, transpiration and stomatal conductance were increased by 14.69%, 4.58% and 8.92%, respectively. They were further confirmed by high maximum ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylation rate (27.40% increase), maximum electron transport rate (21.51% increase) and the lowest CO2 compensation point (45.19% decrease). Furthermore, concentrations of Cu, Mn, Zn, Fe, Mg, Ca, K and P were examined with the most pronounced changes observed for elements directly involved in photosynthesis (Cu, Zn, Mn, and Fe). The Cu concentrations in roots, stems and leaves for Ti 50 mg L-1 cultivation were below the control by 33.15%, 38.28% and 10.76%, respectively. The Zn content in analogous treatment and organs decreased by 30.24%, 26.69% and 13.35%. The Mn and Fe levels in leaves were increased by 72.22% and 50.32%, respectively. Our results indicated that plant defence mechanisms which restrain the water uptake have been overcome in pea by photocatalytic activity of nanoparticulate TiO2 which stimulated photosynthesis. On the contrary to the substantial stomatal conductance, the transpiration has been reduced because exceptional part of water flow was already consumed in chloroplasts and could not have been freed to the atmosphere.

Life-cycle risk assessment of graphene-enabled textiles in fire protection gear

A nanomaterial life-cycle risk assessment (Nano LCRA) of a graphene-enabled textile used in the construction of heat and fire-resistant personal protective equipment (PPE) was conducted to develop, analyze, and prioritize potential occupational, health and environmental risks. The analysis identifies potential receptors and exposure pathways at each product life-cycle stage and makes a qualitative evaluation of the potential significance of each scenario. A literature review, quality evaluation, and database were developed as part of the LCRA to identify potential hazards associated with graphene-based materials (GBMs) throughout the product life-cycle. Generally, risks identified from graphene-enabled textiles were low. Of the developed exposure scenarios, occupational inhalation exposures during raw material and product manufacturing ranked highest. The analysis identifies the key potential human and environmental hazards and exposures of the products across the product life-cycle of graphene enabled textiles. Priority research gaps to reduce uncertainty include evaluating long-term, low dose graphene exposures typical of the workplace, as well as the potential release and hazard characterization of graphene-acrylic nanocomposites.

Pragmatic Treatment Strategies for Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon Remediation and Anti-biofouling from Surfaces Using Nano-enzymes: a Review

In this review, two important environmental pollutants have been considered for its potential remediation using microbial-derived nano-enzymes. Firstly, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are one of the major industrial contaminants in the environment due to their ubiquitous occurrence, toxicity, and proclivity for bioaccumulation. Secondly, biofouling due to biofilm-forming organisms that impact tremendous economic and environmental consequences in many industries, especially marine vessels where it causes an increase in hydrodynamic drag, which results in a loss of ship speed at constant power or a power increase to maintain the same speed with higher fuel consumption and emissions into the atmosphere, particularly Green House Gases (GHGs). Among the remediation strategies, biological routes are found to be promising, efficient, and sustainable. Natural ligninolytic enzymes such as MnP, LiP, laccase, peroxidases, and polysaccharide and protein degradative enzymes are found to be highly efficient for PAH degradation and antifouling respectively. However, large-scale usage of these enzymes is difficult due to various reasons like their poor stability, adaptation, and high-cost production of these enzymes. In recent years, the use of nanoparticles, particularly nano-enzymes, is found to be an innovative and synergistic approach to detoxify contaminated areas with concomitant maintenance of enzyme stability.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles induce toxicity in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma cell line U2932 via activating PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of lymphoma. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles have excellent anti-tumor properties in the biomedical field. The present study aimed to explore the underlying mechanism by which ZnO nanoparticles induce toxicity in DLBCL cells (U2932) via the PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy pathway. After U2932 cells were exposed to various concentrations of ZnO nanoparticles, the cell survival rate, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, cell cycle arrest, and changes in the expression of PINK1, Parkin, P62, and LC3 were monitored. Moreover, we investigated monodansylcadaverine (MDC) fluorescence intensity and autophagosome and further validated the results using the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine (3-MA). The results showed that ZnO nanoparticles could effectively inhibit the proliferation of U2932 cells and induce cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phases. Moreover, ZnO nanoparticles significantly increased ROS production, MDC fluorescence intensity, autophagosome formation, and the expression of PINK1, Parkin, and LC3, and decreased the expression of P62 in U2932 cells. In contrast, the autophagy level was reduced after the intervention of the 3-MA. Overall, ZnO nanoparticles can trigger PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy signaling in U2932 cells, which may be a potential therapeutic approach for DLBCL.

Natural bioactive formulations for biodegradable cotton eco-fabrics with antimicrobial and fire-shielding properties

In this study, eco-friendly cotton fabrics with antimicrobial and flame-retardant properties were produced using newly developed bioactive formulations. The new natural formulations combine the biocidal properties of the biopolymer (chitosan (CS)) and essential oil (thyme oil) (EO) with the flame-retardant properties of mineral fillers (silica (SiO₂), zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO₂), and hydrotalcite (LDH)). The modified cotton eco-fabrics were analyzed in terms of morphology (optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)), color (spectrophotometric measurements), thermal stability (thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)), biodegradability, flammability (micro-combustion calorimetry (MCC)), and antimicrobial characteristics. The antimicrobial activity of the designed eco-fabrics was determined against different kinds of microorganism (S. aureus, E. coli, P. fluorescens, B. subtilis, A. niger, C. albicans). The antibacterial effects and flammability of the materials were found to depend strongly on the compositions of the bioactive formulation. The best results were obtained for the samples of fabric coated with the formulations containing LDH and TiO₂ filler. These samples showed the highest decreases in flammability, with heat release rate (HRR) values of 168 (W/g) and 139 (W/g), respectively, compared to the reference (233 W/g). The samples also showed very good inhibition of growth against of all the studied bacteria.

A versatile chemical vapor synthesis reactor for in situ x-ray scattering and spectroscopy

We describe a versatile reactor system for chemical vapor synthesis of nanoparticles, which enables in situ investigations of high temperature gas phase particle formation and transformation processes by x-ray scattering and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The system employs an inductively heated hot wall reactor as the energy source to start nanoparticle formation from a mixture of precursor vapor and oxygen. By use of a modular set of susceptor segments, it is especially possible to change solely the residence time of the gas mixture while keeping all other process parameters (temperature, gas flow, pressure) constant. Corresponding time-temperature profiles are supported by computational fluid dynamics simulations. The operation of the system is demonstrated for two example studies: tin oxide nanoparticle formation studied by small angle x-ray scattering and iron oxide nanoparticle formation by x-ray absorption spectroscopy.

Development of novel antiviral nanofinishes for bioactive textiles

Virus-caused public health outbreaks represent a serious threat to humans all over the world. The rampant new 2019 coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has wreaked havoc on China and the rest of the world since December 2019. Now focus is on effective reduction of corona and other viral and bacterial infections in hospitals, public and private sectors, households, schools, etc. Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, heterostructures, patterned surfaces, and graphene-based materials have shown up to 99.9998% efficacy against bacteria, mold, and viruses. The stability, long shelf life, and robustness of inorganic nanoparticles make them desirable for antimicrobial nanofinishes. These inorganic antimicrobial agents are more stable than organic antibacterial compounds at high temperature and pressure. The high specific surface area-to-volume ratios and unique physicochemical characteristics of nanoparticles are largely responsible for their antibacterial actions. But their immobilization is a huge challenge. To address this issue, NPs were modified with (glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPTS) and applied on cotton fabric. The silane part of GPTS reacted with the NPs under acidic conditions while epoxy reacted with cotton under alkaline conditions. Treated cotton fabric showed good antiviral and antibacterial activity even after severe industrial washing.

A Novel Antipathogenic Agent for Nonwoven Fabric

Medical-grade masks and N95 respirators containing non-woven fibers are designed to prevent the spread of airborne diseases. While they effectively trap respiratory droplets and aerosols, they cannot lyse entrapped pathogens. Embedded antimicrobial agents such as silver, copper, zinc, iodine, peptides, quaternary ammonium salts, or nanoparticles have been used to overcome this limitation. However, their effectiveness remains debatable because these materials can be toxins, allergens, irritants, and environmental hazards. Recently, silicon nitride (Si3N4) was found to be a potent antipathogenic compound, and it may be an ideal agent for masks. In powder or solid form, it is highly effective in inactivating bacteria, fungi, and viruses while leaving mammalian tissue unaffected. The purpose of this study was to serially assess the antiviral efficacy of Si3N4 against SARS-CoV-2 using powders, solids, and embedded nonwoven fabrics. Si3N4 powders and solids were prepared using conventional ceramic processing. The “pad-dry-cure” method was used to embed Si3N4 particles into polypropylene fibers. Fabric testing was subsequently conducted using industrial standards—ISO 18184 for antiviral effectiveness, ASTM F2299 and EN 13274-7 for filtration efficiency, EN 14683 for differential pressure drop, and ISO 18562-2 for particle shedding. A modification of ISO 18562-3 was also employed to detect ammonia release from the fabric. Antiviral effectiveness for Si3N4 powders, solids, and embedded fabrics were 99.99% at ≤ 5 min, ~ 93% in 24 h, and 87% to 92% in 120 min, respectively. Results of the standard mask tests were generally within prescribed safety limits. Further process optimization may lead to commercial Si3N4-based masks that not only “catch” but also “kill” pathogenic microbes.

Layer-By-Layer Self-Assembled Dip Coating for Antifouling Functionalized Finishing of Cotton Textile

The fouling of surfaces such as textiles is a major health challenge, and there is a continuous effort to develop materials and processes to overcome it. In consideration of this, this study regards the development of antifouling functional nanoencapsulated finishing for the cotton textile fabric by employing a layer-by-layer dip coating technique. Antifouling textile finishing was formulated by inducing the nanoencapsulation of the antifouling functional group inside the hydrophobic polymeric shell. Cotton fabric was taken as a substrate to incorporate antibacterial functionality by alternatively fabricating multilayers of antifouling polymeric formulation (APF) and polyelectrolyte solution. The surface morphology of nanoencapsulated finished textile fabric was characterized through scanning electron microscopy to confirm the uniform distribution of nanoparticles on the cotton textile fabric. Optical profilometry and atomic force microscopy studies indicated increased surface roughness in the coated textile substrate as compared to the uncoated textile. The surface thickness of the fabricated textile increased with the number of deposited bilayers on the textile substrate. Surface hydrophobicity increased with number of coating bilayers with θ values of x for single layer, up to y for 20 bilayers. The antibacterial activity of the uncoated and layer-by-layer coated finished textile was also evaluated. It was significant and exhibited a significant zone of inhibition against microbial strains Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli. The bilayer coating exhibited water repellency, hydrophobicity, and antibacterial activity. Thus, the fabricated textile could be highly useful for many industrial and biomedical applications.

Face masks to fight against COVID-19 pandemics: A comprehensive review of materials, design, technology and product development

The outbreak of COVID-19 has created renewed attention on research and large scale manufacturing of face masks. In the last two decades, usage of face masks for respiratory protection has gained increased importance as a measure to control the maladies and fatalities due to exposure to particulate pollutants and toxic pathogens. Numerous variants of surgical and high-performance respirator masks are available in the market, and yet the fibrous materials science researchers, manufacturers and public health agencies are making concerted efforts towards improvising them with respect to self-sterilisability, facial fit, thermo-physiological comfort, reusability and biodegradability, while maintaining or rather enhancing the filtration efficiency. This review article presents a compendium of materials, design and performance standards of existing face masks, as well as elaborates on developments made for their performance enhancement. The criticality of inculcation of good hygiene habits and earnest compliance to correct mask donning and doffing practices has also been highlighted. This review is expected to make valuable contributions in the present COVID-19 scenario when donning a face mask has become mandatory.

In Situ Synthesis of Copper Nanoparticles on Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma-Treated Polyester Fabrics at Different Reaction pHs

Polyester (PET) fabrics are widely applied in functional textiles due to their outstanding properties such as high strength, dimensional stability, high melting point, low cost, recyclability, and flexibility. Nevertheless, the lack of polar groups in the PET structure makes its coloration and functionalization difficult. The present work reports the one-step in situ synthesis of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) onto the PET fabric employing sodium hypophosphate and ascorbic acid as reducing and stabilizing agents, at acidic (pH 2) and alkaline pH (pH 11). This synthesis (i) used safer reagents when compared with traditional chemicals for CuNP production, (ii) was performed at a moderate temperature (85 °C), and (iii) used no protective inert gas. The dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma was used as an environmentally friendly method for the surface functionalization of PET to enhance the adhesion of CuNPs. The size of the CuNPs in an alkaline reaction (76-156 nm for not treated and 93.4-123 nm for DBD plasma-treated samples) was found to be smaller than their size in acidic media (118-310 nm for not treated and 249-500 nm for DBD plasma-treated samples), where the DBD plasma treatment promoted some agglomeration. In acidic medium, metallic copper was obtained, and a reddish color became noticeable in the textile. In alkaline medium, copper(I) oxide (Cu₂O) was detected, and the PET samples exhibited a yellow color. The PET samples with CuNPs presented improved ultraviolet protection factor values. Finally, a minimal concentration of copper salt was studied to obtain the optimized antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The functionalized samples showed strong antibacterial efficacy using low-concentration solutions in the in situ synthesis (2.0 mM of copper salt) and even after five washing cycles. The DBD plasma treatment improved the antibacterial action of the samples prepared in the alkaline medium.

Nanobioremediation: A sustainable approach for the removal of toxic pollutants from the environment

In recent years, the proportion of organic and inorganic contaminants has increased rapidly due to growing human interference and represents a threat to ecosystems. The removal of these toxic pollutants from the environment is a difficult task. Physical, chemical and biological methods are implemented for the degradation of toxic pollutants from the environment. Among existing technologies, bioremediation in combination with nanotechnology is the most promising and cost-effective method for the removal of pollutants. Numerous studies have shown that exceptional characteristics of nanomaterials such as improved catalysis and adsorption properties as well as high reactivity have been subjects of great interest. There is an emerging trend of employing bacterial, fungal and algal cultures and their components, extracts or biomolecules as catalysts for the sustainable production of nanomaterials. They can serve as facilitators in the bioremediation of toxic compounds by immobilizing or inducing the synthesis of remediating microbial enzymes. Understanding the association between microorganisms, contaminants and nanoparticles (NPs) is of crucial importance. In this review, we focus on the removal of toxic pollutants using the cumulative effects of nanoparticles with microbial technology and their applications in different domains. Besides, we discuss how this novel nanobioremediation technique is significant and contributes towards sustainability.

Polysaccharides and Metal Nanoparticles for Functional Textiles: A Review

Nanotechnology is a powerful tool for engineering functional materials that has the potential to transform textiles into high-performance, value-added products. In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the development of functional textiles using metal nanoparticles (MNPs). The incorporation of MNPs in textiles allows for the obtention of multifunctional properties, such as ultraviolet (UV) protection, self-cleaning, and electrical conductivity, as well as antimicrobial, antistatic, antiwrinkle, and flame retardant properties, without compromising the inherent characteristics of the textile. Environmental sustainability is also one of the main motivations in development and innovation in the textile industry. Thus, the synthesis of MNPs using ecofriendly sources, such as polysaccharides, is of high importance. The main functions of polysaccharides in these processes are the reduction and stabilization of MNPs, as well as the adhesion of MNPs onto fabrics. This review covers the major research attempts to obtain textiles with different functional properties using polysaccharides and MNPs. The main polysaccharides reported include chitosan, alginate, starch, cyclodextrins, and cellulose, with silver, zinc, copper, and titanium being the most explored MNPs. The potential applications of these functionalized textiles are also reported, and they include healthcare (wound dressing, drug release), protection (antimicrobial activity, UV protection, flame retardant), and environmental remediation (catalysts).

Smart 3D Printed Hydrogel Skin Wound Bandages: A Review

Wounds are a major health concern affecting the lives of millions of people. Some wounds may pass a threshold diameter to become unrecoverable by themselves. These wounds become chronic and may even lead to mortality. Recently, 3D printing technology, in association with biocompatible hydrogels, has emerged as a promising platform for developing smart wound dressings, overcoming several challenges. 3D printed wound dressings can be loaded with a variety of items, such as antibiotics, antibacterial nanoparticles, and other drugs that can accelerate wound healing rate. 3D printing is computerized, allowing each level of the printed part to be fully controlled in situ to produce the dressings desired. In this review, recent developments in hydrogel-based wound dressings made using 3D printing are covered. The most common biosensors integrated with 3D printed hydrogels for wound dressing applications are comprehensively discussed. Fundamental challenges for 3D printing and future prospects are highlighted. Additionally, some related nanomaterial-based hydrogels are recommended for future consideration.

Metal Content in Textile and (Nano)Textile Products

Metals, metallic compounds, and, recently, metallic nanoparticles appear in textiles due to impurities from raw materials, contamination during the manufacturing process, and/or their deliberate addition. However, the presence of lead, cadmium, chromium (VI), arsenic, mercury, and dioctyltin in textile products is regulated in Europe (Regulation 1907/2006). Metal determination in fabrics was performed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave-assisted acid digestion. The ICP-MS procedure has been successfully validated; relative standard deviations were up to 3% and analytical recoveries were within the 90-107% range. The developed method was applied to several commercial textiles, and special attention has been focused on textiles with nanofinishing (fabrics prepared with metallic nanoparticles for providing certain functionalities). Arsenic content (in textile T4) and lead content (in subsamples T1-1, T1-2, and T3-3) were found to exceed the maximum limits established by the European Regulation 1907/2006. Although impregnation of yarns with mercury compounds is not allowed, mercury was quantified in fabrics T1-2, T5, and T6. Further speciation studies for determining hexavalent chromium species in sample T9 are necessary (hexavalent chromium is the only species of chromium regulated). Some textile products commercialised in Europe included in this study do not comply with European regulation 1907/2006.

Targeted specific inhibition of bacterial and Candida species by mesoporous Ag/Sn–SnO2 composite nanoparticles: in silico and in vitro investigation

Invasive bacterial and fungal infections have notably increased the burden on the health care system and especially in immune compromised patients. These invasive bacterial and fungal species mimic and interact with the host extracellular matrix and increase the adhesion and internalization into the host system. Further, increased resistance of traditional antibiotics/antifungal drugs led to the demand for other therapeutics and preventive measures. Presently, metallic nanoparticles have wide applications in health care sectors. The present study has been designed to evaluate the advantage of Ag/Sn–SnO₂ composite nanoparticles over the single oxide/metallic nanoparticles. By using in silico molecular docking approaches, herein we have evaluated the effects of Ag/Sn–SnO₂ nanoparticles on adhesion and invasion responsible molecular targets such as LpfD (E. coli), Als3 (C. albicans) and on virulence/resistance causing PqsR (P. aeruginosa), RstA (Bmfr) (A. baumannii), FoxA (K. pneumonia), Hsp90 and Cyp51 (C. albicans). These Ag/Sn–SnO₂ nanoparticles exhibited higher antimicrobial activities, especially against the C. albicans, which are the highest ever reported results. Further, Ag/Sn–SnO₂ NPs exhibited interaction with the heme proionate residues such as Lys143, His468, Tyr132, Arg381, Phe105, Gly465, Gly464, Ile471 and Ile304 by forming hydrogen bonds with the Arg 381 residue of lanosterol 1 4α-demethylase and increased the inhibition of the Candida strains. Additionally, the Ag/Sn–SnO₂ nanoparticles exhibited extraordinary inhibitory properties by targeting different proteins of bacteria and Candida species followed by several molecular pathways which indicated that it can be used to eliminate the resistance to traditional antibiotics.

Biocide effect against SARS-CoV-2 and ESKAPE pathogens of a noncytotoxic silver-copper nanofilm

Nanometric materials with biocidal properties effective against severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and pathogenic bacteria could be used to modify surfaces, reducing the risk of touching transmission. In this work, we showed that a nanometric layer of bimetallic AgCu can be effectively deposited on polypropylene (PP) fibers. The virucidal properties of the AgCu nanofilm were evaluated by comparing the viral loads remaining on uncoated and coated PP after contact times between 2 and 24 h. Quantification of virion numbers for different initial concentrations indicated a reduction of more than 95% after 2 h of contact. The bactericidal action of the AgCu nanofilm was also confirmed by inoculating uncoated and coated PP with a pool of pathogenic bacteria associated with pneumonia (ESKAPE). Meanwhile, no cytotoxicity was observed for human fibroblasts and keratinocyte cells, indicating that the nanofilm could be in contact with human skin without threat. The deposition of the AgCu nanofilm on the nonwoven component of reusable cloth masks might help to prevent virus and bacterial infection while reducing the pollution burden related to the disposable masks. The possible mechanism of biocide contact action was studied by quantum chemistry calculations that show that the addition of Ag and/or Cu makes the polymeric fiber a better electron acceptor. This can promote the oxidation of the phospholipids present at both the virus and bacterial membranes. The rupture at the membrane exposes and damages the genetic material of the virus. More studies are needed to determine the mechanism of action, but the results reported here indicate that Cu and Ag ions are good allies, which can help protect us from the virus that has caused this disturbing pandemic.

Antibacterial and Antifungal Properties of Electrospun Recycled PET Polymeric Fibers Functionalized with Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles

Currently, to reduce the environmental problems associated with plastic waste, methods are being sought to use this waste as raw materials in different applications, such as fibers. In addition, to improve these materials and provide different properties, nanoparticles (NPs) are incorporated. In the present work, polymeric fibers made of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (r-PET) from post-consumer water bottles, functionalized with 0%, 1.5%, 3% and 6% zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) in function of r-PET weight, were elaborated to evaluate their antibacterial and antifungal characteristics. The ZnO-NPs were synthesized by the solvothermal method, obtaining particles with a mean diameter of 38.15 nm, while the fibers were obtained by electrospinning with a diameter range between 200-5000 nm. The functionalized fibers were carried out against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis through the agar diffusion method, obtaining the highest inhibition halo at 6% w/w ZnO-NPs, being 26.5 mm and 34.25 mm, respectively. In addition, the same method was used to evaluate the antifungal activity of Penicillium s.p. and Fusarium graminearum, observing antifungal properties due to the presence of nanoparticles in the fibers.

Nanomaterial-Based Antifungal Therapies to Combat Fungal Diseases Aspergillosis, Coccidioidomycosis, Mucormycosis, and Candidiasis

Over the last years, invasive infections caused by filamentous fungi have constituted a serious threat to public health worldwide. Aspergillus, Coccidioides, Mucorales (the most common filamentous fungi), and Candida auris (non-filamentous fungus) can cause infections in humans. They are able to cause critical life-threatening illnesses in immunosuppressed individuals, patients with HIV/AIDS, uncontrolled diabetes, hematological diseases, transplantation, and chemotherapy. In this review, we describe the available nanoformulations (both metallic and polymers-based nanoparticles) developed to increase efficacy and reduce the number of adverse effects after the administration of conventional antifungals. To treat aspergillosis and infections caused by Candida, multiple strategies have been used to develop new therapeutic alternatives, such as incorporating coating materials, complexes synthesized by green chemistry, or coupled with polymers. However, the therapeutic options for coccidioidomycosis and mucormycosis are limited; most of them are in the early stages of development. Therefore, more research needs to be performed to develop new therapeutic alternatives that contribute to the progress of this field.

Engineered Bioactive Polymeric Surfaces by Radiation Induced Graft Copolymerization: Strategies and Applications

The interest in developing antimicrobial surfaces is currently surging with the rise in global infectious disease events. Radiation-induced graft copolymerization (RIGC) is a powerful technique enabling permanent tunable and desired surface modifications imparting antimicrobial properties to polymer substrates to prevent disease transmission and provide safer biomaterials and healthcare products. This review aims to provide a broader perspective of the progress taking place in strategies for designing various antimicrobial polymeric surfaces using RIGC methods and their applications in medical devices, healthcare, textile, tissue engineering and food packing. Particularly, the use of UV, plasma, electron beam (EB) and γ-rays for biocides covalent immobilization to various polymers surfaces including nonwoven fabrics, films, nanofibers, nanocomposites, catheters, sutures, wound dressing patches and contact lenses is reviewed. The different strategies to enhance the grafted antimicrobial properties are discussed with an emphasis on the emerging approach of in-situ formation of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in radiation grafted substrates. The current applications of the polymers with antimicrobial surfaces are discussed together with their future research directions. It is expected that this review would attract attention of researchers and scientists to realize the merits of RIGC in developing timely, necessary antimicrobial materials to mitigate the fast-growing microbial activities and promote hygienic lifestyles.

Global gene expression signatures in response to citrate-coated silver nanoparticles exposure

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in medical and commercial products for their unique antibacterial functions. However, the impact of AgNPs on human neural development is not well understood. To investigate the effect of AgNPs on human neural development, various doses of 20 nm citrate-coated AgNP (AgSC) were administered to human embryonic stem cell derived neural progenitors during the neuronal differentiation. Immunofluorescence staining with neuronal progenitor markers SOX2 (sex determining region Y-box 2) and Nestin (VI intermediate filament protein) showed that AgSC inhibited rosette formation, neuronal progenitor proliferation, and neurite outgrowth. Furthermore, AgSC promoted astrocyte activation and neuronal apoptosis. These adverse effects can be partially recovered with ascorbic acid. A genome-wide transcriptome analysis of both AgSC treated and untreated samples indicated that the most up-graduated genes were a group of Metallothionein (1F, 1E, 2A) proteins, a metal-binding protein that plays an essential role in metal homeostasis, heavy metal detoxification, and cellular anti-oxidative defence. The most significantly down-regulated genes were neuronal differentiation 6 (NEUROD6) and fork head box G1 (FOXG1). GO analyse indicated that the regulation of cholesterol biosynthetic process, neuron differentiation, synapse organization and pattern specification, oliogenesis, and neuronal apoptosis were the most impacted biological processes. KEGG pathway analyse showed that the most significantly impacted pathways were C5 isoprenoid, axon guidance, Notch, WNT, RAS-MAPK signalling pathways, lysosome, and apoptosis. Our data suggests that AgSCs interfered with metal homeostasis and cholesterol biosynthesis which induced oxidative stress, inhibited neurogenesis, axon guidance, and promoted apoptosis. Supplementation with ascorbic acid could act as an antioxidant to prevent AgSC-mediated neurotoxicity.

Development of Advanced Textile Finishes Using Nano-Emulsions from Herbal Extracts for Organic Cotton Fabrics

The development of textile finishing with improved functional properties has been a growing interest among industry and scientists worldwide. The recent global pandemic also enhanced the awareness amongst many toward improved hygiene and the use of antimicrobial textiles. Generally, natural herbal components are known to possess antimicrobial properties which are green and eco-friendly. This research reports a novel and innovative method of developing and optimising nano-emulsions using two combinations of herbal extracts produced from Moringa Oleifera, curry leaf, coconut oil (nano-emulsion 1) and other using Aegle marmelos with curry leaf and coconut oil (nano-emulsion 2). Nano-emulsions were optimised for their pH, thermal stability, and particle size, and percentage add-on. Organic cotton fabrics (20 and 60 gsm) were finished with nano-emulsions using continuous and batch processes and characterised for their surface morphology using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The finished fabrics were evaluated for their Whiteness Index, assessed for antimicrobial resistance against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) using AATCC 100 and 147 methods. In addition, fabrics were assessed for their antifungal efficacy (AATCC 30), tensile strength and air permeability. Results suggested that finished organic fabrics with nano-emulsions had antimicrobial resistance, antifungal, wash fastness after 20 washing cycles, and sufficient strength. This novel finishing method suggests that organic cotton fabrics treated with nano-emulsions can be used as a durable antimicrobial textile for healthcare and hygiene textiles.

Effect of the Concentration and the Type of Dispersant on the Synthesis of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles and Their Potential Antimicrobial Applications

The bactericidal properties of copper oxide nanoparticles have growing interest due to potential application in the medical area. The present research investigates the influence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) on the production of copper oxide nanoparticles prepared from copper sulfate (CuSO₄) and sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) solutions. Different analytical techniques were used to determine the crystal nature, mean size diameter, and surface morphology of the copper oxide nanoparticles. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed formation of nanoparticles of cuprite (Cu₂O) and tenorite (CuO) when PVP and SDS were added at the beginning of the reaction. In fact, when the Cu/PVP ratio was 1.62, Cu₂O nanoparticles were obtained. In addition, nanoparticles of CuO were synthesized when the Cu/PVP ratios were 0.54 and 0.81. On the other hand, a mixture of copper oxides (CuO and Cu₂O) and cuprite (Cu₂O) was obtained when PVP (Cu/PVP = 0.81 and 1.62) and SDS (Cu/SDS = 0.90) were added 30 min after the beginning of the reaction. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show agglomerated nanoparticles with a size distribution ranging from 2 to 60 nm, while individual particles have sizes between 4.1 ± 1.9 and 41.6 ± 12.8 nm. The Kirby-Bauer method for the determination of antibacterial activity shows that small CuO (4.1 ± 1.9 nm) and Cu₂O (8.5 ± 5.3 nm) nanoparticles inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus MRSA, S. aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. The antibacterial test of cotton fabric impregnated with nanoparticles shows positive results. The determination of the optimal ratio of copper oxide nanoparticles per cm² of fabric that are able to exhibit a good antibacterial activity is ongoing.

Developmental exposure to silver nanoparticles leads to long term gut dysbiosis and neurobehavioral alterations

Due to their antimicrobial properties, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are used in a wide range of consumer products that includes topical wound dressings, coatings for biomedical devices, and food-packaging to extend the shelf-life. Despite their beneficial antimicrobial effects, developmental exposure to such AgNPs may lead to gut dysbiosis and long-term health consequences in exposed offspring. AgNPs can cross the placenta and blood–brain-barrier to translocate in the brain of offspring. The underlying hypothesis tested in the current study was that developmental exposure of male and female mice to AgNPs disrupts the microbiome–gut–brain axis. To examine for such effects, C57BL6 female mice were exposed orally to AgNPs at a dose of 3 mg/kg BW or vehicle control 2 weeks prior to breeding and throughout gestation. Male and female offspring were tested in various mazes that measure different behavioral domains, and the gut microbial profiles were surveyed from 30 through 120 days of age. Our study results suggest that developmental exposure results in increased likelihood of engaging in repetitive behaviors and reductions in resident microglial cells. Echo-MRI results indicate increased body fat in offspring exposed to AgNPs exhibit. Coprobacillus spp., Mucispirillum spp., and Bifidobacterium spp. were reduced, while Prevotella spp., Bacillus spp., Planococcaceae, Staphylococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., and Ruminococcus spp. were increased in those developmentally exposed to NPs. These bacterial changes were linked to behavioral and metabolic alterations. In conclusion, developmental exposure of AgNPs results in long term gut dysbiosis, body fat increase and neurobehavioral alterations in offspring.

Ag2[Fe(CN)5NO]-Fabricated Hydrophobic Cotton as a Potential Wound Healing Dressing: An In Vivo Approach

There have been reports of different types of wound dressings for various functions and purposes. Cotton being one of the most widely used wound dressing material due to its non-toxic, biodegradable, and other properties is used for fabrication as well as in the form of scaffolds for faster and effective wound closure. Our research team has already demonstrated the role of silver nitroprusside nanoparticles (SNPNPs) for wound healing and antibacterial activity. In the current study, we have developed cotton fabric impregnated with SNPNPs (SNPCFs) which remain photo inert and displayed long-term antimicrobial activity due to the surface modification with the silver nitroprusside complex. These SNPCFs were characterized by various analytical techniques (XRD, FTIR, UV spectroscopy, TGA, TEM, FESEM, EDAX, ICP-OES). The fabricated cotton dressings with nanoparticles showed an improved water contact angle (113-130°) than that of bare cotton gauze (60°) and exhibited more antibacterial property in case of both Gram-negative bacteria (Klebsiella aerogenes and Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis) even after several washings. The biocompatible nature of SNPCFs was assessed by in vivo chorioallantoic membrane assay that showed no obstruction in the formation of blood vessels. The SNPCFs exhibited better wound healing activity compared to the bare cotton and AgCFs as observed in the C57BL6/J mouse. The histopathological investigation reveals increase in re-epithelialization and deposition of connective tissue. The macrophage (M2) counts in SNPCF-treated skin tissues were supportive of more wound healing activity than mice treated with cotton fabric impregnated with chemically synthesized silver nanoparticles. Based on biodistribution analysis using ICP-OES, the data illustrated that a significant amount of silver is absorbed in the skin tissues of mice as compared to the blood and kidney. Furthermore, the absence of silver from the vital organs (heart, liver, and kidney) corroborates our hypothesis that the SNPCFs can act excellently in treating wounds when topically applied over skin. Thereafter, all these results highlight a strong possibility that SNPCFs exemplify the potential as a new antimicrobial and wound healing agent in future times.

Towards Selection Charts for Epoxy Resin, Unsaturated Polyester Resin and Their Fibre-Fabric Composites with Flame Retardants

Epoxy and unsaturated polyester resins are the most used thermosetting polymers. They are commonly used in electronics, construction, marine, automotive and aircraft industries. Moreover, reinforcing both epoxy and unsaturated polyester resins with carbon or glass fibre in a fabric form has enabled them to be used in high-performance applications. However, their organic nature as any other polymeric materials made them highly flammable materials. Enhancing the flame retardancy performance of thermosetting polymers and their composites can be improved by the addition of flame-retardant materials, but this comes at the expense of their mechanical properties. In this regard, a comprehensive review on the recent research articles that studied the flame retardancy of epoxy resin, unsaturated polyester resin and their composites were covered. Flame retardancy performance of different flame retardant/polymer systems was evaluated in terms of Flame Retardancy index (FRI) that was calculated based on the data extracted from the cone calorimeter test. Furthermore, flame retardant selection charts that relate between the flame retardancy level with mechanical properties in the aspects of tensile and flexural strength were presented. This review paper is also dedicated to providing the reader with a brief overview on the combustion mechanism of polymeric materials, their flammability behaviour and the commonly used flammability testing techniques and the mechanism of action of flame retardants.

Progress in Biodegradable Flame Retardant Nano-Biocomposites

This paper summarizes the results obtained in the course of the development of a specific group of biocomposites with high functionality of flame retardancy, which are environmentally acceptable at the same time. Conventional biocomposites have to be altered through different modifications, to be able to respond to the stringent standards and environmental requests of the circular economy. The most commonly produced types of biocomposites are those composed of a biodegradable PLA matrix and plant bast fibres. Despite of numerous positive properties of natural fibres, flammability of plant fibres is one of the most pronounced drawbacks for their wider usage in biocomposites production. Most recent novelties regarding the flame retardancy of nanocomposites are presented, with the accent on the agents of nanosize (nanofillers), which have been chosen as they have low or non-toxic environmental impact, but still offer enhanced flame retardant (FR) properties. The importance of a nanofiller’s geometry and shape (e.g., nanodispersion of nanoclay) and increase in polymer viscosity, on flame retardancy has been stressed. Although metal oxydes are considered the most commonly used nanofillers there are numerous other possibilities presented within the paper. Combinations of clay based nanofillers with other nanosized or microsized FR agents can significantly improve the thermal stability and FR properties of nanocomposite materials. Further research is still needed on optimizing the parameters of FR compounds to meet numerous requirements, from the improvement of thermal and mechanical properties to the biodegradability of the composite products. Presented research initiatives provide genuine new opportunities for manufacturers, consumers and society as a whole to create a new class of bionanocomposite materials with added benefits of environmental improvement.

Polymeric Materials with Antibacterial Activity: A Review

Infections caused by bacteria are one of the main causes of mortality in hospitals all over the world. Bacteria can grow on many different surfaces and when this occurs, and bacteria colonize a surface, biofilms are formed. In this context, one of the main concerns is biofilm formation on medical devices such as urinary catheters, cardiac valves, pacemakers or prothesis. The development of bacteria also occurs on materials used for food packaging, wearable electronics or the textile industry. In all these applications polymeric materials are usually present. Research and development of polymer-based antibacterial materials is crucial to avoid the proliferation of bacteria. In this paper, we present a review about polymeric materials with antibacterial materials. The main strategies to produce materials with antibacterial properties are presented, for instance, the incorporation of inorganic particles, micro or nanostructuration of the surfaces and antifouling strategies are considered. The antibacterial mechanism exerted in each case is discussed. Methods of materials preparation are examined, presenting the main advantages or disadvantages of each one based on their potential uses. Finally, a review of the main characterization techniques and methods used to study polymer based antibacterial materials is carried out, including the use of single force cell spectroscopy, contact angle measurements and surface roughness to evaluate the role of the physicochemical properties and the micro or nanostructure in antibacterial behavior of the materials.

Potential of silver nanoparticles synthesized using low active mosquitocidal Lysinibacillus sphaericus as novel antimicrobial agents

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using extracellular filtrates of some Lysinibacillus sphaericus (Ls) strains under simple conditions. Ls synthesized AgNPs showed the optical absorption peaks at 388-412 nm as detected by UV-visible spectrophotometer. Transmission electron micrographs of bacterial synthesized AgNPs revealed that they were polycrystalline with spherical, hexagonal, cuboidal, rod and irregular shapes. The average diameter of the tested AgNPs were ranged from 14-21 nm and they were negatively charged as detected by DLS (-18.2 to -28.9). FTIR spectra showed the presence of nitrogenous biomolecules capping the synthesized AgNPs. The filtrates of tested Ls strains showed nitrate reductase activity (1.45-2.56 µmol/ml/min). Tested AgNPs showed bactericidal activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, fungicidal activity against yeast and filamentous fungi, and virucidal activity against rotavirus. In addition, it showed synergistic antimicrobial effect to cephradine and nizoarm against all tested microorganisms. Cytotoxicity test revealed the safety of the tested nanoparticles at tested concentrations.Finally, Ls strains represent microbial sources for ecofriendly, simple and economic biosynthesis of antimicrobial AgNPs. Also, this research may contribute to the medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical industry for the development of new products used for the public health.

Durable fire retardant, superhydrophobic, abrasive resistant and air/UV stable coatings

Fabric-based materials such as textiles and papers are widely used in our daily life. However, most of conventional fabrics are highly combustible and easily stained by water and household liquids, susceptible to fire risks and surface contamination/staining. Herein, a non-fluorinated coating that contains the flame-retardants ammonium polyphosphate/pentaerythrotol (APP/PER) and water-repellent silica nanoparticles-polydimethylsiloxane (SiO₂@PDMS) is developed. The coated fabric materials prevent fire propagation and are repellant to water, coffee, milk etc. The heat release rate of the SiO₂@PDMS/APP/PER-coated cotton fabric is 46.33% lower than that of pure cotton fabric, and the amount of the char yield is increased by 40.4%. The coatings are durable, resistant to mechanical abrasion and have a long life-time exposure to corrosive liquids and intense UV radiation. The coated fabric materials also exhibit good organic solvent/oil and water separation capability at reduced risks of fire. The facile process can be extended to garment and paper industries to lower the fire risks and resist water stains.

In situ microwave heating fabrication of copper nanoparticles inside cotton fiber using pressurization in immiscible liquids with raw material solutions

We developed a method for in situ fabrication of copper nanoparticles inside cotton fibers. Copper nanoparticles can be fabricated mainly in the central part of the fiber by absorbing a raw material solution and by applying microwave heating in a state where the raw material solution is pressed with immiscible liquids. Surface SEM images and cross-sectional EDS mapping for the fabricated fibers clarified that copper nanoparticles fabricated on the cotton surface were suppressed considerably more by the hydrophobic raw material solution than by the hydrophilic raw material solution. These cotton fibers containing copper nanoparticles were found to have antiviral properties against the influenza A virus.

Copper nanoparticles were created inside of cotton fibers by pressuring immiscible liquids against raw material solutions and applying microwave heating.

Sustainable Use of Nanomaterials in Textiles and Their Environmental Impact

At present, nanotechnology is a priority in research in several nations due to its massive capability and financial impact. However, due to the uncertainties and abnormalities in shape, size, and chemical compositions, the existence of certain nanomaterials may lead to dangerous effects on the human health and environment. The present review includes the different advanced applications of nanomaterials in textiles industries, as well as their associated environmental and health risks. The four main textile industry fields using nanomaterials, nanofinishing, nanocoatings, nanofibers, and nanocomposites, are analyzed. Different functional textiles with nanomaterials are also briefly reviewed. Most textile materials are in direct and prolonged contact with our skin. Hence, the influence of carcinogenic and toxic substances that are available in textiles must be comprehensively examined. Proper recognition of the conceivable benefits and accidental hazards of nanomaterials to our surroundings is significant for pursuing its development in the forthcoming years. The conclusions of the current paper are anticipated to increase awareness on the possible influence of nanomaterial-containing textile wastes and the significance of better regulations in regards to the ultimate disposal of these wastes.

Novel Polyvinyl Butyral/Monoacylglycerol Nanofibrous Membrane with Antifouling Activity

Monoacylglycerols (MAGs) have proven of great interest to the foodstuffs industry due to the promising antibacterial activity they show for controlling microbial contamination. Prior to this paper, this antibacterial agent had not been incorporated in a nanofibrous membrane. This study details convenient fabrication of nanofibrous membranes based on polyvinyl butyral (PVB) containing various concentrations of monocaprin (MAG 10) by an electrospinning process. Increasing the concentration of MAG 10 caused differences to appear in the shape of the nanofibers, in addition to which the level of wettability was heightened. Besides exhibiting antibacterial properties, the functional membranes demonstrated especially good antifouling activity. The novel and efficient nanofibrous membranes described have the potential to find eventual application in medical or environmental fields.

Montecarlo Simulation and HAXPES Analysis of Organosilane Segregation in Titania Xerogel Films; Towards a Generic Surface Chemofunctionalization Process

The formation of xerogels implies a sequence of hydrolysis and condensation reactions, which are intricate to analyze in heteromolecular sols. We analyze by probabilistic Montecarlo methods the development of hybrid organosilane–titania xerogels and illustrate how partial charges of the reacting molecules can help estimating relative probabilities for the condensation of the molecules. Since the condensation rate of Ti alkoxides is much higher than the corresponding rate of Si alkoxides (especially if bearing a non-hydrolizable group), by imposing a fast condensation process in agreement with low pH kinetics, the process leads to a surface segregation of the organosilane. The simulation results are compared with results of characterization of thin condensates of two different organosilanes within a titanium–isopropoxide matrix. Non-destructive in-depth profiles were obtained by hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which can resolve through estimation of Si and specific moieties of the organosilane molecules the progress of the condensation. These results are relevant for the generalization of chemo-functionalization processes by kinetic demixing of organosilanes, which have myriad applications in biomedicine and biotechnology.

Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using isolated Bacillus subtilis: characterization, antimicrobial activity, cytotoxicity, and their performance as antimicrobial agent for textile materials

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have unique properties and a large range of applications. Biosynthesis of stable AgNPs using the extracellular filtrate of Bacillus subtilis was proved by the characteristic surface plasmon resonance at about 420-430 nm. They were polycrystalline with spherical, hexagonal, and irregular shapes and they were negatively charged (-40 mV) with an average diameter of 20 nm. FTIR spectrum confirmed the presence of protein molecules coating AgNPs. The optimum conditions for the synthesis of tested AgNPs were 1:6 filtrate dilution, 1 mM AgNO₃, pH 7, 30 °C , 48 h contact time under static and illuminating conditions. The synthesized AgNPs showed antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, and Salmonella typhi, antifungal activity against Candida albicans and antiviral activity against rotavirus. Also, they showed potent cytotoxic effects on lung and hepatic carcinoma human cell lines. Meanwhile, the acute toxicity study against mice showed no significant changes in hematological, biochemical, and histological parameters of AgNPs treated mice. They also showed mild hepatoprotective effect in thioacetamide (TAA) - induced hepatic fibrosis in rats. AgNPs treated textiles fabrics showed high antimicrobial activities against different pathogenic microorganisms as well as UV protection adequacy.
