Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a severe condition, often co-occurring with depression and anxiety, that strongly affects the quality of life (QoL) in some patients. Conversely, depressive and anxiety symptoms are associated with a 2-3 fold increase in mortality risk and were shown to act independently of typical risk factors in CHF progression. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of depression, anxiety, and QoL on the occurrence of rehospitalization within one year after discharge in CHF patients. METHODS 148 CHF patients were enrolled in a 10-center, prospective, observational study. All patients completed two questionnaires, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Questionnaire Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36) at discharge timepoint. RESULTS It was found that demographic and clinical characteristics are not associated with rehospitalization. Still, the levels of depression correlated with gender (p ≤ 0.027) and marital status (p ≤ 0.001), while the anxiety values were dependent on the occurrence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, levels of depression (HADS-Depression) and anxiety (HADS-Anxiety) did not correlate with the risk of rehospitalization. Univariate logistic regression analysis results showed that rehospitalized patients had significantly lower levels of Bodily pain (BP, p = 0.014), Vitality (VT, p = 0.005), Social Functioning (SF, p = 0.007), and General Health (GH, p = 0.002). In the multivariate model, poor GH (OR 0.966, p = 0.005) remained a significant risk factor for rehospitalization, and poor General Health is singled out as the most reliable prognostic parameter for rehospitalization (AUC = 0.665, P = 0.002). CONCLUSION Taken together, our results suggest that QoL assessment complements clinical prognostic markers to identify CHF patients at high risk for adverse events. Abstract
Asthma is a common disease affecting approximately 300 million people worldwide, across all age ranges. Despite advances in asthma outcomes of the last few decades, there remains room for improvement in asthma management and for patient outcomes, particularly in older patients. The heterogeneity of asthma is now well recognized, and is known to complicate response to treatment and patient behavior and impact health outcomes. Asthma and its heterogeneity change according to age. Asthma affects people differently across the life span. In adults, prevalence is highest among those in middle age; however, mortality is greater in the older age group. In this clinical commentary, we describe how age impacts asthma prevalence and incidence, outcomes, disease expression, and approach to management in adulthood and in older patients.

Depressive and anxiety symptomatology among people with asthma or atopic dermatitis: A population-based investigation using the UK Biobank data. Brain Behav Immun 2020; 90:138-144. Abstract
The present study investigated the association of depression and anxiety symptomatology (DAS) with asthma and atopic dermatitis (AD) diagnosis during mid-adult years. The study employed data from 502,641 participants in the UK Biobank. Neutrophils to Lymphocytes Ratios (NLRs) of patients with asthma and AD were calculated and evaluated in relation to DAS, measured via the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4). Age of asthma or AD onset association with DAS were also estimated. Multivariable regression analyses were implemented among participants with asthma or AD, compared to those without these disorders. Out of 58,833 participants with asthma and 13,462 with AD, the prevalence of DAS was 11.7% and 2.7%, respectively. DAS increased among participants with either asthma or AD, being highest within patients having both (β = 0.41, 95% confidence interval (95%CI), 0.34,0.49). NLR showed a linear increase with PHQ scores in asthma patients, (tertile 1, β = 0.30, 95% CI, 0.27,0.34; tertile 2, β = 0.36, 95%CI, 0.32,0.39, and tertile 3, β = 0.43, 95%CI, 0.39,0.46). An inverted U-shaped association was seen between age of asthma onset and PHQ, with the 40-59 age group (β = 0.54, 95%CI, 0.48,0.59) showing the highest risk followed by the 60+ (β = 0.43, 95%CI, 0.34,0.51 and 20-39 groups (β = 0.32, 95%CI, 0.27,0.38). Similar patterns emerged within AD. Asthma and AD were associated with increased DAS during mid-adult years, being strongest among participants reporting both disorders. A dose-response relationship between NLR and DAS was observed. Asthma or AD onset during mid-adult years (40-59) were associated with the highest increment in DAS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although depressive symptoms is a frequent psychiatric comorbidity in people with Heart Failure (HF) in China, its prevalence was not estimated. This is a meta-analysis of studies examining depressive symptoms in HF patients in China. METHODS The following databases including PubMed, the Cochrace Library, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang and VIP were independently and systematically searched from inception until March 31, 2019. Statistical analyses were performed using the Stata 13.0 software. The pooled prevalence of depressive symptoms was performed using a random-effects model. In addition, subgroup analysis was conducted based on the New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class, the assessment tools of depression and gender. RESULTS Altogether 53 studies (10649 participants) met the inclusion criteria for the analysis. The point prevalence of depressive symptoms in HF was 43%. In subgroup analyses, the prevalence of depressive symptoms was higher in females than in males (46% vs 34%, respectively), and the prevalence of depressive symptoms positively correlated with New York Heart Association functional classes (II 28%, III 46%, IV 52%) . Rates of depression were highest when measured using BDI scale (62%), and lowest when measured using the CES-D (31%). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis confirmed that the prevalence of depressive symptoms was common in HF patients in China and it is related to the severity of heart failure, gender and the diversity of assessment tools. Appropriate strategies for prevention and treatment of depressive symptoms in this population need greater attention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The presence of a Frank's sign ear crease is closely correlated with coronary artery disease (CAD). The SYNTAX score indicates the complexity of coronary lesions. This present investigation sought to identify the correlation between SYNTAX score and several specific ear creases. MATERIAL AND METHODS Four specific types of ear creases - crossing crease not originated from ear hole (CC-NEH), crossing crease originated from ear hole (CC-EH), vertical creases on the face side (VC-F), and vertical creases dividing earlobe and face (VC-EF) - were investigated in patients undergoing coronary angiography. A Frank's sign score system was introduced based on the 4 creases. Demographic data, clinical data, and SYNTAX score were also documented. The association between ear creases and SYNTAX score, as well as the correlation between Frank's score and SYNTAX score, were statistically analyzed. RESULTS CC-NEH had the highest positive predictive value (positive predictive value=0.439), and VC-F had the highest negative predictive value for the detection of intermediate and high SYNTAX score (negative predictive value=1.000). VC-EF and CC-NEH were associated with intermediate and high SYNTAX scores (OR=2.913-7.694, all P<0.05). Only 2.9% of patients with Frank's score=0 had intermediate or high SYNTAX scores, and 52.2% and 50.0% of patients with Frank's sign score=3 and 4 had intermediate or high SYNTAX scores, respectively. The Frank's sign score was significantly and positively correlated with SYNTAX score (r=0.457, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Features of specific ear creases and Frank's sign scores were associated with intermediate and high complexity of coronary lesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The study was designed to investigate lipid profile and SYNTAX score in patients with non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). METHODS 311 patients with NSTEMI were enrolled. The demographic, clinical data, blood samples and SYNTAX score were documented. The Pearson linear correlation was used to detect confounding factors linearly correlated with SYNTAX score. The significantly correlated confounding factors were put into the multiple linear regressions. RESULTS The Pearson linear correlation showed that high-density lipoprotein- cholesterol (HDL-C) and apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) were significantly correlated with Syntax Score (r = - 0.119, P = 0.044 and r = - 0.182, P = 0.002, respectively). The multiple linear regressions for Syntax Score were built using HDL-C and ApoA1, respectively. After the adjustment of other significantly correlated confounding factors such as white blood cell count (WBC), myohemoglobin (MB), glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase (AST) and creatinine, the ApoA1 still showed significant association with Syntax Score (β = - 0.151, P = 0.028). The area under curve was (AUC) 0.624 and the optimal cutoff value is 1.07 g/L when using ApoA1 to predict moderate and severe coronary artery lesions. The patients with ApoA1 ≥ 1.07 g/L and < 1.07 g/L have the Syntax Scores of 12.21 ± 11.58 and 16.33 ± 11.53, respectively (P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The ApoA1 is the only lipid factor significantly associated with complexity of coronary artery lesion in patients with NSTEMI, the patients with ApoA1 < 1.07 g/L may have more complex coronary artery lesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS In heart failure patients with high prevalence of chronic renal disease (CKD), hospitalization and mortality, whether the lipid profile was associated with renal dysfunction remained unknown. The present study intended to clarify the association between the lipid profile and renal dysfunction in the heart failure patients. METHODS 336 hospitalized heart failure patients with left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤45% and New York Heart Association (NYHA) class II-IV were enrolled. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 90 mL/min·1.73 m2 was defined as renal dysfunction. The demographic, clinical data, blood samples and echocardiography were documented. The Pearson simple linear correlation was performed to evaluate the confounding factors correlated with eGFR. The significantly correlated factors were enrolled in Logistic regression as confounding factors to determine the association between the lipid profile and renal dysfunction in the heart failure patients. RESULTS 182 patients (54.2%) had renal dysfunction and 154 patients (45.8%) did not have renal dysfunction. The waist circumference, platelet counts, platelet distribution width (PDW), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), apolipoprotein A1 (apoA1), albumin and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) are positively correlated with eGFR (all P< 0.05). Meanwhile, the age, mean platelet volume (MPV), neutrophilic granulocyte percentage (NEUT%), urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine and total bilirubin (TBIL) are negatively correlated with eGFR (all P< 0.05). The total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and apolipoprotein B (apoB) show no correlation with eGFR. After the adjustment of sex, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, age, waist circumference, platelet counts, MPV, PDW, NEUT%, TBIL, albumin and LVEF, HDL-C is the only lipid factor still significantly associated with renal dysfunction in hospitalized heart failure patients (OR=0.119, P=0.003). CONCLUSION Among the lipid profile of TC, triglyceride, LDL-C, HDL-C, apo A1 and apo B, the HDL-C is the only lipid factor significantly associated with renal dysfunction in hospitalized heart failure patients.

Abstract
The study was designed to investigate whether the hamilton rating scale for depression (24-items) (HAM-D24) can be used to predict the diabetic microvascular complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. 288 hospitalized patients with T2DM were enrolled. Their diabetic microvascular complications including diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic peripheral neuropathy and diabetic foot as well as demographic, clinical data, blood samples and echocardiography were documented. All the enrolled patients received HAM-D24 evaluation. The HAM-D24 score and incidence of depression in T2DM patients with each diabetic microvascular complication were significantly higher than those in T2DM patients without each diabetic microvascular complication. After the adjustment of use of insulin and hypoglycemic drug, duration of T2DM, mean platelet volume, creatinine, albumin, fasting glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin type A1C, left ventricular ejection fraction, respectively, HAM-D24 score was still significantly associated with diabetic microvascular complications (OR = 1.188-1.281, all P < 0.001). The AUC of HAM-D24 score for the prediction of diabetic microvascular complication was 0.832 (0.761-0.902). 15 points of HAM-D24 score was considered as the optimal cutoff with the sensitivity of 0.778 and specificity of 0.785. In summary, HAM-D24 score may be used as a novel predictor of diabetic microvascular complications in T2DM patients.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of the present study is to assess the association between the human GOSR2 gene and coronary artery disease using a haplotype-based case-control study in Chinese Han population. Methods A total of 283 coronary artery disease patients and 280 controls were genotyped for the human GOSR2 gene (rs197932, rs3785889, rs197922, rs17608766, and rs16941382). Data were analyzed for three separate groups: the total subjects, men, and women. Results For the total subjects, the frequency of the G-T haplotype established by rs3785889-rs16941382 was significantly higher in the coronary artery disease patients as compared to the control subjects (P=0.009). Multiple logistic regression analysis also confirmed that the subjects with G-T haplotype established by rs3785889-rs16941382 (homozygote) were found having significantly higher chance suffering from coronary artery disease than the ones without this haplotype (OR=1.887, P=0.007). Conclusions The G-T haplotype established by rs3785889-rs16941382 may be a risk genetic marker for coronary artery disease patients in Chinese Han population.
