Abstract
BACKGROUND To reduce malaria burden in Côte d'Ivoire, the Ministry of Health aims for 90% of its population to possess one long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) for every two persons by 2025. This study evaluated LLIN coverage two years after a mass distribution in central Côte d'Ivoire. METHODS A census was conducted in 43 villages. Data were collected on household geo-position, composition, number of sleeping units and LLINs owned. LLIN coverage was assessed using: 1/ownership; proportion of household with at least one LLIN; 2/household access; households with sufficient nets for every two persons and for every sleeping unit; and 3/population access; proportion of population with access to LLIN within households and sleeping units. RESULTS 10,630 households (89.6% response rate) and 46,619 inhabitants were recruited. Household LLIN ownership was 63.8% (95% CI: 58.7-68.8). Household LLIN access was 37.6% (95% CI: 33.2-42.0) based on 1 LLIN per 2 persons and 37.1% (95% CI: 33.0-41.2) based on 1 net per sleeping unit. Population LLIN access based on 1 LLIN per 2 persons and 1 net per sleeping space was 53.3% (95% CI: 48.6-58.1) and 49.4% (95% CI: 45.1-53.6), respectively. Approximately 17% of households with access for every 2 persons did not have access by every sleeping unit and 9.7% of households with access by sleeping unit did not have access for every 2 persons. Households with adequate access by sleeping unit but not for every 2 persons tend to be larger with fewer sleeping units, and have children under 5 years old and female members. The largest households (>7 members) and households with at least one under-five member had the lowest access (20.8 and 27.3%, respectively). CONCLUSION LLIN access was low in this area of intense indoor malaria transmission, 2 years after the last mass distribution campaign. Strategies are needed to improve LLINs coverage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malaria remains a serious public health challenge in tropical and subtropical regions, including Indonesia. Children under 5 years old face particular risk of contracting malaria due to low immunity. We examined potential factors associated with malaria infection among under-5 children in Papua Province, Indonesia. METHODS The study utilized secondary data from Indonesia Basic Health Research 2018. Multistage random sampling was employed, from the province level to census blocks (CBs). In Papua Province, interviews were conducted in 928 CBs. All 2,745 under-5 children were selected. The dependent variable was laboratory-confirmed malaria positivity; independent factors included residential area, socioeconomic characteristics, and behaviors such as sleeping under an insecticide net impregnated ≤3 years ago and the use of ventilation barriers. We also examined the conditions of the bedroom, kitchen, and living room according to the frequency of window-opening, proportion of ventilation area to the floor, and radiance. RESULTS Not sleeping under an insecticide net impregnated within the last 3 years (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.518; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.391-0.685; p<0.001); having a kitchen without windows (aOR, 0.491; 95% CI, 0.285-0.844; p=0.01); rarely opening the living room window (aOR, 2.804; 95% CI, 1.232-6.383; p=0.01), and having a windowless living room (aOR, 3.027; 95% CI, 1.369-6.696; p=0.01) displayed significant relationships with malaria infection among under-5 children. CONCLUSION Not using an insecticide-treated net impregnated ≤3 years ago, along with opening the living room window daily and having a kitchen without windows, appear preventive of malaria infection among under-5 children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this scoping review, we aim to consolidate the evidence on inequalities in service coverage in Africa using a comprehensive set of stratifiers. These stratifiers include place of residence, race/ethnicity/culture/language, occupation, gender/sex, religion, education, socioeconomic status and social capital. Our approach provides a more holistic understanding of the different dimensions of inequality in the context of universal health coverage (UHC). DESIGN We conducted a scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis. DATA SOURCES We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, PyscINFO, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar and Global Index Medicus for articles published between 1 January 2005 and 29 August 2022 examining inequalities in utilisation of health services for reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH), infectious or non-communicable diseases in Africa. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES We included any empirical research that assessed inequalities in relation to services for RMNCH (eg, family planning), infectious diseases (eg, tuberculosis treatment) and non-communicable diseases (eg, cervical cancer screening) in Africa. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS The data abstraction process followed a stepwise approach. A pilot-tested form capturing study setting, inequality assessment and service coverage indicators was developed and finalised. Data were extracted by one reviewer and cross-checked by another, with discrepancies resolved through consensus meetings. If a consensus was not reached, senior reviewers made the final decision. We used a narrative approach to describe the study characteristics and mapped findings against PROGRESS-Plus stratifiers and health service indicators. Quantitative findings were categorised as 'proequity', 'antiequity' or 'equal' based on service utilisation across social groups. RESULTS We included 178 studies in our review, most studies published within the last 5 years (61.1%). Most studies assessed inequality using socioeconomic status (70.6%), followed by age (62.4%), education (60.7%) and place of residence (59.0%). Few studies focused on disability, social capital and ethnicity/race and intersectionality of stratifiers. Most studies were on RMNCH services (53.4%) and infectious disease services (43.3%). Few studies were qualitative or behavioural analyses. Results highlight significant inequalities across different equity stratifiers and services with inconsistent trends of inequalities over time after the implementation of strategies to increase demand of services and strengthen health systems. CONCLUSION There is a need to examine equity in service coverage for a variety of health conditions among various populations beyond the traditional classification of social groups. This also requires using diverse research methods identifying disparities in service use and various barriers to care. By addressing these knowledge gaps, future research and health system reforms can support countries in moving closer to achievement of UHC targets.

Abstract
Studies have indicated that the risk of malaria, particularly its association with anaemia in pregnant women, increases when treated bed nets are not used. This paper utilizes a statistical mechanical model to investigate whether there is a statistical relationship between the presence or absence of anaemia in pregnant and non-pregnant women and their decision to sleep under treated bed nets. Data from the Ghana Malaria Indicator Survey (GMIS), which includes both rural and urban malaria-endemic areas in Ghana, were employed in this study. A total of 2,434 women, comprising 215 pregnant and 2,219 non-pregnant participants, were involved. Among these, 4.76% of the pregnant and anaemic women and 45.89% of the non-pregnant and anaemic women slept under treated bed nets, while 0.86% of the pregnant and anaemic and 6.82% of the non-pregnant and anaemic women did not. The findings revealed that, in the absence of social interaction, non-anaemic pregnant women have a lower prevalence of choosing to use bed nets compared to their anaemic counterparts. Additionally, non-pregnant anaemic women showed a positive private incentive (30.87%) to use treated bed nets, implying a positive correlation between anaemia and the choice to sleep in a treated bed net. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that both pregnancy and anaemia status have a relationship with the use of treated bed nets in Ghana, especially when social interactions are considered. The interaction strength between non-pregnant and anaemic women interacting with each other shows a negative estimate (-1.49%), implying that there is no rewarding effect from imitation. These insights are crucial for malaria prevention and control programs, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to enhance the use of treated bed nets among both pregnant and non-pregnant women in Ghana's malaria-endemic regions.

Abstract
Malaria control demands the development of a wide range of complementary strategies. We describe the properties of a naturally occurring, non-genetically modified symbiotic bacterium, Delftia tsuruhatensis TC1, which was isolated from mosquitoes incapable of sustaining the development of Plasmodium falciparum parasites. D. tsuruhatensis TC1 inhibits early stages of Plasmodium development and subsequent transmission by the Anopheles mosquito through secretion of a small-molecule inhibitor. We have identified this inhibitor to be the hydrophobic molecule harmane. We also found that, on mosquito contact, harmane penetrates the cuticle, inhibiting Plasmodium development. D. tsuruhatensis TC1 stably populates the mosquito gut, does not impose a fitness cost on the mosquito, and inhibits Plasmodium development for the mosquito's life. Contained field studies in Burkina Faso and modeling showed that D. tsuruhatensis TC1 has the potential to complement mosquito-targeted malaria transmission control.

Abstract
Background Malaria is a major public health concern among pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa. Within the region, Nigeria has the highest malaria cases. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with malaria parasitaemia among pregnant women at a booking clinic in Ibadan, Nigeria. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted between January and April 2021 at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria. A sample of 300 pregnant women participated, and anaemia and malaria were diagnosed using packed cell volume and Giemsa-stained blood smears, respectively. Data analysis was done using SPSS 25.0. Results The study found that 26 (8.70%) pregnant women tested positive for malaria parasitaemia. Factors such as age, religion, level of education, and occupation were significantly related to the prevalence of malaria parasitaemia among pregnant women with p < 0.05. Conclusion Our study identified a high prevalence of malaria parasitaemia among pregnant women with demographic factors such as age, religion, level of education, and occupation significantly associated. Targeted malaria control interventions for pregnant women with low levels of education and low-income occupations are necessary, with more research needed to evaluate their effectiveness.

Abstract
Objectives Anaemia, defined using haemoglobin level, is one of the most prevalent nutritional deficiency diseases among women of childbearing age. Whilst most studies of anaemia were conducted on pregnant women, data are lacking on the haemoglobin level and its correlates of mothers in Ghana. In this paper, we report data on the correlates of haemoglobin level among mothers in Nanton district, Northern Region, Ghana. Method A cross-sectional study design was used to study 420 mothers of children under 2 years selected randomly from the child welfare clinics (CWCs) of five health facilities in Nanton District, Ghana. Women were interviewed on their socio-demographic characteristics, dietary practices, reproductive history, and knowledge on anaemia using a structured questionnaire in health facilities. Haemoglobin values during pregnancy were retrieved from antenatal clinic files whilst finger-pricked blood test samples were obtained and used to determine haemoglobin levels during the survey. Multiple linear regression was used to identify the correlates of haemoglobin level of the mothers. Results The mean age (±SD) and parity of the subjects were 29.4 (±6.36) years, and 3.36 (±1.78) respectively. The mean haemoglobin (±SD) was 10.35 (±2.17) g/dl and 56.0% of the subjects had anaemia. Multivariable regression analysis identified 12 haemoglobin correlates, but based on standardized regression coefficients, the seven most important correlates of haemoglobin were: parity (β = -0.396), age (β = 0.352), having malaria infection postpartum (β = - 0.340), frequency of fruit consumption (once weekly, β = 0.322), frequency of vegetable consumption (twice weekly, β = 0.296), overall index of anaemia knowledge (richest tertile, β = 0.125), and CWC attendance (β = 0.110). It is recommended to strengthen family planning and malaria prevention programmes, and to intensify education on fruit and vegetable consumption, and anaemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Plasmodium falciparum resistance to intermittent preventive treatment with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) continues to spread throughout sub-Saharan Africa. This study assessed the occurrence of microscopic and sub-microscopic P. falciparum parasitaemia, dihydropteroate synthase mutations associated with resistance to SP and maternal anaemia in the Mount Cameroon area. METHODS Consenting pregnant women living in semi-rural and semi-urban/urbanized settings were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Socio-demographic, antenatal and clinical data were documented. Microscopic and sub-microscopic parasitaemia were diagnosed using peripheral blood microscopy and nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) respectively. The dhps mutations were genotyped by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. The presence of A437G, K540E, and A581G was considered a marker for high-level resistance. Haemoglobin levels and anaemia status were determined. RESULTS Among the women, the prevalence of microscopic and sub-microscopic P. falciparum infection were 7.7% (67/874) and 18.6% (93/500) respectively. Predictors of microscopic infection were younger age (< 21 years) (AOR = 2.89; 95% CI 1.29-6.46) and semi-rural settings (AOR = 2.27; 95% CI 1.31-3.96). Determinants of sub-microscopic infection were the rainy season (AOR, 3.01; 95% CI 1.77-5.13), primigravidity (AOR = 0.45; 95% CI 0.21-0.94) and regular ITN usage (AOR = 0.49; 95% CI 0.27-0.90). Of the145 P. falciparum isolates genotyped, 66.9% (97) carried mutations associated with resistance to SP; 33.8% (49), 0%, 52.4% (76) and 19.3% (28) for A437G, K540E, A581G and A437G + A581G respectively. The A581G mutation was associated with ≥ 3 SP doses evident only among sub-microscopic parasitaemia (P = 0.027) and multigravidae (P = 0.009). Women with microscopic infection were more likely from semi-rural settings (AOR = 7.09; 95% CI 2.59-19.42), to report history of fever (AOR = 2.6; 95% CI 1.07-6.31), to harbour parasites with double resistant mutations (AOR = 6.65; 95% CI 1.85-23.96) and were less likely to have received 2 SP doses (AOR = 0.29; 95% CI 1.07-6.31). Microscopic infection decreased Hb levels more than sub-microscopic infection. CONCLUSION The occurrence of sub-microscopic P. falciparum parasites resistant to SP and intense malaria transmission poses persistent risk of malaria infection during pregnancy in the area. ITN usage and monitoring spread of resistance are critical.

Abstract
Background Despite a scale up of control interventions over the years, malaria remains a major public health and economic concern in Cameroon, contributing considerably to hospitalization and deaths. The effectiveness of control strategies depends on the extent of adherence by the population to national guidelines. This study assessed the influence of human knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to malaria and its control on the prevalence of malaria parasite infection, with implications for the elimination of the disease. Methodology This is a cross-sectional community and hospital-based study, covering the five ecological and three malaria transmission zones in Cameroon. A pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire was used to document socio-demographic and clinical parameters as well as knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward malaria control and management. Consenting participants were screened for malaria parasite with rapid diagnostic test (mRDT) of the peripheral blood. Association between qualitative variables was determined using the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. Results A total of 3,360 participants were enrolled, 45.0% (1,513) of whom were mRDT positive, with 14.0% (451/3,216) and 29.6% (951/3,216) having asymptomatic parasitaemia and malaria, respectively. Although most participants knew the cause, symptoms, and control strategies, with 53.6% (1,000/1,867) expertly knowledgeable about malaria overall, only 0.1% (2/1,763) individuals were fully adherent to malaria control measures. Conclusion The risk of malaria in Cameroon remains high, with the population considerably knowledgeable about the disease but poorly adherent to national malaria control guidelines. Concerted and more effective strategies aimed at improving knowledge about malaria and adherences to control interventions are necessary to ultimately eliminate the disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malaria remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Using insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) every night, year-round is critical to maximize protection against malaria. This study describes sociodemographic, psychosocial, and household factors associated with consistent ITN use in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and Sierra Leone. METHODS Cross-sectional household surveys employed similar sampling procedures, data collection tools, and methods in three countries. The survey sample was nationally representative in Côte d'Ivoire, representative of the North and Far North regions in Cameroon, and representative of Bo and Port Loko districts in Sierra Leone. Analysis used multilevel logistic regression and sociodemographic, ideational, and household independent variables among households with at least one ITN to identify correlates of consistent ITN use, defined as sleeping under an ITN every night the preceding week. FINDINGS Consistent ITN use in Côte d'Ivoire was 65.4%, 72.6% in Cameroon, and 77.1% in Sierra Leone. While several sociodemographic and ideational variables were correlated with consistent ITN use, these varied across countries. Multilevel logistic regression results showed perceived self-efficacy to use ITNs and positive attitudes towards ITN use were variables associated with consistent use in all three countries. The perception of ITN use as a community norm was positively linked with consistent use in Cameroon and Côte d'Ivoire but was not significant in Sierra Leone. Perceived vulnerability to malaria was positively linked with consistent use in Cameroon and Sierra Leone but negatively correlated with the outcome in Côte d'Ivoire. Household net sufficiency was strongly and positively associated with consistent use in all three countries. Finally, the findings revealed strong clustering at the household and enumeration area (EA) levels, suggesting similarities in net use among respondents of the same EA and in the same household. CONCLUSIONS There are similarities and differences in the variables associated with consistent ITN use across the three countries and several ideational variables are significant. The findings suggest that a social and behaviour change strategy based on the ideation model is relevant for increasing consistent ITN use and can inform specific strategies for each context. Finally, ensuring household net sufficiency is essential.

Abstract
According to the world malaria report more malaria cases were reported in 2020 than in 2019, due to disruptions in the distribution of insecticide treated nets, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently a projected 34.32% (11.6 million out of 33.8 million) pregnancies were exposed to malaria in the WHO African Region in 2020. This study was therefore designed to assess the impact of long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) on asymptomatic malaria in the pregnant women attending the Foumbot District Hospital (rural setting) and the Bamenda Regional Hospital (urban setting). This was a hospital based cross-sectional study done within three months from February to April 2021. A structured questionnaire and the CareStart™ Pf Malaria HRP2 qualitative rapid diagnostic test were used for data collection. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, and Chi-square test. The relative risk, attributable risk, odds ratio, and likelihood ratio of malaria occurrence in exposed patients were determined by Chi-square (and Fisher's exact) test. The prevalence of asymptomatic malaria was 10.14% (63/621), with a higher prevalence among the pregnant women in the rural setting (12.21%; 37/303), than the urban setting (8.18%; 26/318). As indicated by the attributable risk, 21% of malaria incidence was attributed to absence of LLINs distribution in neighborhoods of the rural setting meanwhile 10% of malaria incidence is attributed to absence of LLINs distribution in neighborhoods of the urban setting. Regular screening for asymptomatic malaria in pregnancy and consistent free distribution of LLINs are recommended in endemic areas, especially in the rural settings.

Abstract
Background Malaria during pregnancy is a major cause of maternal morbidity globally and leads to poor birth outcomes. The World Health Organization has recommended the use of insecticide treated bed nets (ITN) as one of the effective malaria preventive strategies among pregnant women in malaria endemic areas. This study, therefore, seeks to examine the individual and household factors associated with the use of ITNs among pregnant women in Ghana. Methods Data for this study was obtained from the 2019 Ghana Malaria Indicator Survey (GMIS) conducted between September 25 and November 24, 2019. The weighted sample comprised 353 pregnant women aged 15–49 years. Data was analyzed with SPSS version 22 using both descriptive and multilevel logistics regression modelling. Statistically significant level was set at p < 0.05. Results The study found that 49.2% of pregnant women in Ghana use ITN to prevent malaria. Pregnant women aged 35–49 years (AOR = 3.403, CI: 1.191–9.725), those with no formal education (AOR = 5.585, CI = 1.315–23.716), and those who had secondary education (AOR = 3.509, CI = 1.076–11.440) had higher odds of using ITN. Similarly, higher odds of ITN usage was found among who belonged to the Akan ethnic group (AOR = 7.234, CI = 1.497–34.955), dwell in male-headed households (AOR = 2.232, CI = 1.105–4.508) and those whose household heads are aged 60–69 years (AOR = 4.303, CI = 1.160–15.966). However, pregnant women who resided in urban areas (AOR = 0.355, CI = 0.216–0.582), those whose household heads aged 40–49 years (AOR = 0.175, CI = 0.066–0.467) and those who belonged to richer (AOR =0.184, CI = 0.050–0.679) and richest (AOR = 0.107, CI = 0.021–0.552) households had lower odds of using ITN for malaria prevention. Conclusions Individual socio-demographic and household factors such as pregnant women’s age, educational level, place of residence, ethnicity, sex and age of household head, and household wealth quintile are associated with the use of ITN for malaria prevention among pregnant women. These factors ought to be considered in strengthening malaria prevention campaigns and develop new interventions to help increase ITN utilization among vulnerable population living in malaria- endemic areas.

Abstract
Background Despite efforts to avert the negative effects of malaria, there remain barriers to the uptake of prevention measures, and these have hindered its eradication. This study explored the factors that influence uptake of malaria prevention strategies among pregnant women and children under-five years and the impact of COVID-19 in a malaria endemic rural district in Uganda. Methods This was a qualitative case study that used focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and key informant interviews involving pregnant women, caregivers of children under-five years, traditional birth attendants, village health teams, local leaders, and healthcare providers to explore malaria prevention uptake among pregnant women and children under-five years. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and data were analyzed using thematic content approach. Results Seventy-two participants were enrolled in the Focus Group Discussions, 12 in the in-depth interviews, and 2 as key informants. Pregnant women and caregivers of children under-five years were able to recognize causes of malaria, transmission, and symptoms. All participants viewed malaria prevention as a high priority, and the use of insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets (ITNs) was upheld. Participants' own experiences indicated adverse effects of malaria to both pregnant women and children under-five. Home medication and the use of local herbs were a common practice. Some participants didn’t use any of the malaria prevention methods due to deliberate refusal, perceived negative effects of the ITNs, and family disparity. The Corona Virus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) control measures did not abate the risk of malaria infection but these were deleterious to healthcare access and the focus of malaria prevention. Conclusions Although pregnant women and caregivers of children under-five years recognized symptoms of malaria infection, healthcare-seeking was not apt as some respondents used alternative approaches and delayed seeking formal healthcare. It is imperative to focus on the promotion of malaria prevention strategies and address drawbacks associated with misconceptions about these interventions, and promotion of health-seeking behaviors. As COVID-19 exacerbated the effect of malaria prevention uptake and healthcare seeking, it’s critical to recommit and integrate COVID-19 prevention measures in normative living and restrict future barriers to healthcare access. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in five districts of Jimma Zone, Ethiopia, March, 2019. 762 HHs were sampled for the survey. Multi-stage followed by simple random sampling used. Monitoring and evaluation reference group’s (MERG’s) indicators were used for measuring ITN access-use. MERG’s indicators are each adapted ITN access-use to sleeping spaces. Household (ownership, saturation and sufficiency) and population access and household members’ status of last night sleeping under ITN compared based on the two models. Differences of estimates of ITN access-use based on the two methods reported as magnitude of over/under estimations, at p-value < 0.05. Results Based on MERG’s approach, the study revealed household (HH) based indicators as such: HH ownership of at least 1 ITN (92.6%), sufficiency of ITN for every two people in HH (50.3%), and saturation of ITN for every 2 people in HHs with any ITN (54.6%). Moreover, population based indicators were: population with ITN access (P3 = 78.6%), people who slept under ITN previous night (63.0%), people who slept under ITN among who accessed it (73.1%), ITN use-gap (26.9%). Equivalent indicators of HH ownership, sufficiency, saturation, and people accessed at where they actually slept, and people slept under ITN among those accessed at where they slept estimated at 71.3%, 49.4%, 69.3%, 66.3%, and 92.1%, respectively. MERG’s approach over-estimated ownership, people’s access, and behaviour-failures by 21.3%, 12.3%, 19.0%, respectively. Over-estimation occurred for reasons such as many sleeping spaces lack ITN and > 2 people actually slept per sleeping space. Conclusions MERG’s universal indicators over estimated households and populations ITN access-use as a result of absence of measures capturing access-use values at spaces where people actually slept. Consequently, measures adapted to sleeping contexts revealed potential misdistributions practiced when the existing indicators are in use. Insertion of sleeping spaces into existing approach will be worthwhile and needs to be promoted as it improves curiosity in ITN distribution, produces closer estimates and prevents malaria prevention and control programmes from overlooking access-use challenges.

Abstract
Background Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are the most widely used interventions for malaria control in Africa. The aim of this study was to assess the ownership and utilization of ITNs and the knowledge of malaria and their effects on malariometric and haematological indices in children living in the Mount Cameroon area. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study involving a total of 405 children aged between 6 months and 14 years living in Batoke–Limbe was carried out between July and October 2017. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to document demographic status, knowledge on malaria and ITN ownership and usage. Venous blood sample was collected from each child to determine the prevalence and intensity of parasitaemia by Giemsa-stained microscopy and full blood count by auto haematology analysis to obtain white blood cell (WBC) and red blood cell (RBC) counts, haemoglobin (Hb) level, haematocrit (Hct), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC). A multilinear regression model was used to determine the relationship between haematological parameter as dependent variable and the independent variables. Results The overall prevalence of parasitaemia, anaemia, knowledge about malaria, ITN ownership, usage and effective usage was 46.7%, 54.7%, 40.7%, 78.8%, 50.9% and 29.9%, respectively. The prevalence of parasitaemia was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in children who ineffectively utilized ITNs (54.9%) than effective users (27.3%). Having knowledge of malaria, negatively correlated with WBC counts (P = 0.005), but positively correlated with Hb levels (P < 0.001), RBC counts (P < 0.001), Hct (P < 0.001), MCV (P < 0.001) and MCH (P < 0.001). ITN use positively correlated with WBC counts (P = 0.005) but negatively with Hb levels (P = 0.004), RBC counts (P = 0.006), and MCH (P < 0.001). Meanwhile, parasitaemia negatively correlated with Hb levels (P = 0.004), RBC counts (P = 0.01), Hct (P = 0.04) and MCHC (P = 0.015). Conclusion There is need for more sensitization on the benefits of using the ITNs to meet up with the intended and expected impact of the free distribution of ITNs. Abstract
Globally, malaria in recent years has witnessed a decline in the number of cases and death, though the most recent world malaria report shows a slight decrease in the number of cases in 2018 compared to 2017 and, increase in 2017 compared to 2016. Africa remains the region with the greatest burden of the disease. Cameroon is among the countries with a very high burden of malaria, with the coastal and forest regions carrying the highest burden of the disease. Nkongho-mbeng is a typical rural setting in the equatorial rain forest region of Cameroon, with no existing knowledge of the epidemiology of malaria in this locality. This study aimed at determining the current status of malaria epidemiology in Nkongho-mbeng. A cross-sectional survey was conducted, during which blood samples were collected from 500 participants and examined by microscopy. Risk factors such as, age, sex, duration of stay in the locality, housing type, environmental sanitation and intervention strategies including use of, LLINs and drugs were investigated. Trends in malaria morbidity were also determined. Of the 500 samples studied, 60 were positive, giving an overall prevalence of 12.0% with the prevalence of asymptomatic infection (10.8%), more than quadruple the prevalence of symptomatic infections (1.2%) and, fever burden not due to malaria was 1.4%. The GMPD was 6,869.17 parasites/μL of blood (95% C.I: 4,977.26/μL– 9,480.19/μL). A LLINs coverage of 84.4% and 77.88% usage was observed. Unexpectedly, the prevalence of malaria was higher among those sleeping under LLINs (12.56%) than those not sleeping under LLINs (8.97%), though the difference was not significant (p = 0.371). Being a male (p = 0.044), being unemployed (p = 0.025) and, living in Mbetta (p = 0.013) or Lekwe (p = 0.022) and the presence bushes around homes (p = 0.002) were significant risk factors associated with malaria infection. Trends in proportion demonstrated that, the prevalence of malaria amongst patients receiving treatment in the health center from 2015 to 2019 decreased significantly (p < 0.001) and linearly from 9.74% to 3.08% respectively. Data generated from this study can be exploited for development of a more effective control measures to curb the spread of malaria within Nkongho-mbeng.

Abstract
The performances of a commonly used Plasmodium falciparum-detecting rapid diagnostic test (RDT) were determined in symptomatic individuals living in Cameroon. Discrepancies between RDT and light microscopy (LM) results were further investigated, with a focus on non-falciparum malaria (NFM) which are still largely understudied in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA) countries. In the present study, a total of 355 individuals aged 1-65 years were enrolled in the study. Their signs/symptoms and sociodemographic characteristics were documented. The RDT reliability was evaluated using LM as gold standard method. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of Plasmodium 18S gene was performed for samples with discordant results between LM and RDT (i.e., RDT-/LM+, and RDT+/LM-). The PCR amplicons of NFM species were sequenced and BLASTed. The prevalence of malaria infection by LM was 95.7% (95% CI: 93.1-97.4%). The sensitivity and specificity of RDT for P. falciparum detection was 94.0% and 66.7%, respectively. By PCR assay, P. ovale curtisi (PoC) was found in 5 of the 30 discordant samples, and on sequence analysis these isolates were found to be phylogenetically closer to sequences reported from China-Myanmar border and Malaysia. This is the first report on molecular characterization of P. ovale subspecies in Cameroon. The study also outlines the good diagnostic performances of the RDT for detection of P. falciparum. Though, the presence of PoC indicated the importance of having RDTs targeting the NFM species in malaria diagnosis and treatment, which is presently limited in the country.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malaria has continued to be a life-threatening disease among under-five children in sub-Saharan Africa. Recent data indicate rising cases in Rwanda after some years of decline. We aimed at estimating the spatial variations in malaria prevalence at a continuous spatial scale and to quantify locations where the prevalence exceeds the thresholds of 5% and 10% across the country. We also consider the effects of some socioeconomic and climate variables. METHODS Using data from the 2014-2015 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey, a geostatistical modeling technique based on stochastic partial differential equation approach was used to analyze the geospatial prevalence of malaria among under-five children in Rwanda. Bayesian inference was based on integrated nested Laplace approximation. RESULTS The results demonstrate the uneven spatial variation of malaria prevalence with some districts including Kayonza and Kirehe from Eastern province; Huye and Nyanza from Southern province; and Nyamasheke and Rusizi from Western province having higher chances of recording prevalence exceeding 5%. Malaria prevalence was found to increase with rising temperature but decreases with increasing volume for rainfall. The findings also revealed a significant association between malaria and demographic factors including place of residence, mother's educational level, and child's age and sex. CONCLUSIONS Potential intervention programs that focus on individuals living in rural areas, lowest wealth quintile, and the locations with high risks should be reinforced. Variations in climatic factors particularly temperature and rainfall should be taken into account when formulating malaria intervention programs in Rwanda.

Abstract
Background Use of insecticide-treated net (ITN) has been identified by the World Health Organization as an effective approach for malaria prevention. The government of Uganda has instituted measures to enhance ITN supply over the past decade, however, the country ranks third towards the global malaria burden. As a result, this study investigated how individual, community and region level factors affect ITN use among women of reproductive age in Uganda. Methods The 2018–2019 Malaria Indicator Survey of Uganda involving 7798 women aged 15–49 was utilized. The descriptive summaries of ITN use were analysed by individual, community and region level factors. Based on the hierarchical nature of the data, four distinct binomial multilevel logistic regression models were fitted using the MLwiN 3.05 module in Stata. The parameters were estimated using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) estimation procedure and Bayesian Deviance Information Criterion was used to identify the model with a better fit. Results The proportion of women who use ITN was 78.2% (n = 6097). Poor household wealth status [aOR = 1.66, Crl = 1.55–1.80], knowing that sleeping under ITN prevents malaria [aOR = 1.11, Crl = 1.05–1.24] and that destroying mosquito breeding sites can prevent malaria [aOR = 1.85, Crl = 1.75–1.98] were associated with higher odds of ITN use. ITN use attributable to regional and community level random effects was 39.1% and 45.2%, respectively. Conclusion The study has illustrated that ITN policies and interventions in Uganda need to be sensitive to community and region level factors that affect usage. Also, strategies to enhance women’s knowledge on malaria prevention is indispensable in improving ITN use.

Abstract
Malaria remains a major health problem in Cameroon; It accounts for 38% of consultations, 24% of deaths and 36.8% of absenteeism in the country. The negative economic impact of malaria has encouraged a new control approach targeting companies. In this regard, a cross sectional study was conducted from February 2015 to June 2017 in 14 companies in the town of Douala. This study aimed at determining the prevalence, control practices of employees and identifying associated factors with malaria. A total of 2705 workers were interviewed and systematically screened for malaria using LED fluorescence microscopy (CyScope®). All positive cases were given a malaria treatment. The prevalence of malaria and asymptomatic malaria was 30.1% and 28.9% respectively; asymptomatic malaria accounted for 95.7% of all positive diagnostic test. Malaria infection was significantly higher in employees aged 36–60 years (30.5%) and having completed primary studies (36%). ITNs ownership and utilization were 86.36% and 77.23% respectively. The risk for malaria infection has significantly decreased with age and educational level while the employees’ level of education and size of households were significantly associated with the regular utilization of ITNs. This is the first study assessing malaria prevalence and risk factors in workplace in Cameroon and using a novel diagnostic tool. This study outlines a high prevalence of malaria infection, especially asymptomatic carriage, high rates of ITNs ownership and utilization, as well as the influence of level of education, age and household size as associated factors. Active case detection of asymptomatic carriers through systematic screening of employees at workplace and their treatment is feasible with the Cyscope microscope and could be a good complement to ongoing control strategies.
