Abstract
Mobile phone interventions are evidence-based methods for preventing obesity among Latino adults and school-aged children; however, few such interventions exist to improve the obesogenic behaviors of children in the developmentally critical preschool years (ages 2-5). Focusing on this age group is important since over one-quarter of 2- to 5-year-old Latino children are overweight or obese. Moreover, most documented interventions target mothers exclusively, ignoring the influence that other caregivers such as fathers and grandparents have on the environment and the child's behaviors. We describe the development and refinement of a theory-informed mobile phone intervention using an iterative, user-centered approach that supports healthy weight-related behaviors in preschool-aged Latino children by engaging mothers, fathers, and grandparents. The resulting intervention, Familias Unidas, Niños Sanos (FUNS), is a culturally centered bilingual (Spanish/English), 12-week, web-based mobile phone intervention grounded in family systems theory. Through three to four weekly text messages and links to web-based interactive multi-media content, caregivers of 2- to 5-year-old Latino children learn evidence-based practices to support specific child behaviors in three domains: healthy eating, media viewing, and physical activity. Development of specific messages is grounded in social cognitive theory. Participants can connect with a virtual coach and other participants. The prototype received high levels of acceptability and usability among members of the target audience and is ready for feasibility testing. The systematic process of development and refinement of the intervention can serve as a model for other mHealth interventions, addressing the ongoing critique of the general lack of theoretical application in such intervention work.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Children from lower-income households lose less weight in family-based weight management interventions, likely due to barriers to treatment attendance and adherence. The CHECK randomized controlled trial tested whether delivering pediatric weight management interventions in the home improves weight loss outcomes relative to clinic-delivered intervention. METHODS Enrolled families included 269 children (137 boys) who were aged 6 to 12 years, had overweight/obesity, and lived in lower-income English- or Spanish-speaking households in Chicago, Illinois (2017-2022). All families received a 12-month pediatric weight management intervention with 18 planned in-person sessions and 12 planned telephone contacts. The sole difference between arms was the location (home vs clinic) of in-person intervention sessions. Intention-to-treat analyses compared treatment arms on 12-month change in BMI z-score (zBMI), intervention session attendance and contact time, and secondary clinical outcomes. RESULTS Twelve-month zBMI change did not differ (P = .58) between the home-delivered (n = 133; -0.031, SD = 0.26) and clinic-delivered arms (n = 136; -0.002, SD = 0.30). Across both arms, session attendance and total contact time predicted larger decreases in zBMI. Both variables were higher in the home-delivered arm (median = 11 sessions, 500 minutes) than the clinic-delivered arm (median = 6.5 sessions, 315.5 minutes; P values < .001). Post hoc analyses indicated that home-delivered (vs clinic-delivered) intervention led to 0.03 (SE = 0.008, P = .0004) greater zBMI reductions across time points prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but not after. CONCLUSIONS Home delivery did not improve overall 12-month weight loss outcomes. Home-delivered intervention did increase session attendance and contact time and may have had beneficial weight loss effects prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has been linked with caloric overeating and weight gain. We employed a mediation analysis to determine whether pandemic-associated overeating was a direct effect of Covid-19-related anxiety (affect regulation theory) or mediated by a coping mechanism of escape eating (escape theory). A diverse pool of college students participated in a repeated cross-sectional study during three separate waves: May 2021 (wave 1, n = 349), December 2021 (wave 2, n = 253), and March 2022 (wave 3, n = 132). The results revealed a significant indirect effect of Covid-19-related anxiety on high-caloric overeating mediated by escape eating, but no direct path between Covid-19-related anxiety and caloric overeating. Analysis of racial/ethnic status uncovered significantly greater Covid-weight gain in Hispanic participants compared with White, Black, and Asian participants. Our results suggest that Covid-19 weight gain is a byproduct of a mediated escape mechanism differentially affecting racial/ethnic groups.

Abstract
Children's eating habits are established early in life and parents play a major role therein. Pregnancy is a teachable moment for the promotion of healthy eating because many women are concerned about their babies' health and have frequent contact with healthcare providers. We aimed to investigate the association between diet quality during pregnancy and the offspring. A total of 691 sets of data on pregnant mothers and their 3-year-old offspring were obtained from the Seiiku Boshi cohort study. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire for mothers in mid-to-late pregnancy and a validated diet history questionnaire for Japanese preschool children at the 36-month checkup. Diet quality was scored using the Japanese Food Guide Spinning Top. Maternal diet quality score was categorised into quartiles, and the association between offspring and maternal diet quality score, adjusted for socioeconomic factors, was assessed using multiple linear regression. The total offspring diet quality score showed a linear trend with the maternal diet quality score (the mean increments (confidential intervals) for each quartile were -0.12 (-1.32-1.08), 1.54 (0.34-2.73), and 1.22 (0.03-2.42)). In particular, offspring vegetable dishes scored higher in all quartiles of maternal vegetable dish scores than in the lowest quartile (0.69 (0.21-1.17), 0.97 (0.50-1.45), and 1.36 (0.88-1.83)). A high diet quality score during pregnancy was positively associated with that of offspring, suggesting the importance of nutritional education in pregnant women to improve their diet quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stunting and micronutrient deficiencies have persistently affected children in the Brazilian Amazon for decades. However, in recent years, a notable increase in childhood overweight prevalence has been observed, particularly in the context of heightened food insecurity exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the limited number of effective solutions proposed to tackle this problem, digital interventions have shown great promise worldwide in preventing obesity and promoting healthy diets. OBJECTIVE This study aims to describe the protocol of a family-based WhatsApp intervention, specifically designed to investigate the efficacy of multimedia messaging in preventing excessive weight gain and improving healthy eating practices among school-aged children in the Amazon region. METHODS This study protocol outlines a theory-driven randomized controlled trial based on the cognitive theory of multimedia learning and the social cognitive theory. A total of 240 parents or caregivers of children enrolled in the Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition Cohort Study in Acre (MINA-Brazil) will be recruited by phone and social media. The intervention group will receive persuasive multimedia messages through WhatsApp over 19 weeks, while the waitlist control group will remain in the usual care. The primary outcome is a change in children's BMI in z score. Secondary outcomes are changes in dietary intake and biochemical indicators of the children. Outcome measures will be assessed at baseline and 5 months after randomization in comparison to usual care. The analysis will use an intent-to-treat approach and will be conducted using the statistical package Stata (version 18.0), with a significance level set at P<.05. Paired and unpaired 2-tailed t tests will be applied to compare mean changes in the outcomes. RESULTS Data collection started in June 2023, and final measurements are scheduled to be completed in December 2023. The results of the main analysis are expected to be available in 2024. CONCLUSIONS This innovative multimedia message intervention holds significant potential for fostering behavioral changes among Amazonian children. Abstract
Objectives Women play an important role in promoting healthy eating and physical activity within their households, influencing the current and life-long health behaviors of children. The purpose of this study is to describe changes in fruit/vegetable consumption and physical activity among children living with racially and ethnically diverse women participating in a lifestyle-change intervention. Methods The study involves secondary analysis of data from a randomized trial of a wellness-coaching intervention led by Community Health Workers, called Community Wellness Coaches in this study. Study participants came from five diverse racial/ethnic communities. Participants received monthly vs. quarterly wellness coaching. Data on changes in the health behaviors of children at four months after enrollment were collected through interviews. Children's behavior changes were compared by study arm, demographics, and women's health behaviors. Results Overall, 71.9% of women reported increases in the fruit/vegetable intake of children living in their household and 59.4% reported increases in children's physical activity. There were no differences in children's fruit/vegetable intake or physical activity by study arm (p=0.88). Women who reported that their own fruit/vegetable intake increased were more likely to report an increase in children's consumption (aOR=2.55, 95%CI 1.05 - 6.21). Conclusion and Implications Among women of color participating in a health-behavior change intervention, women's behavior changes were associated with improvements in child health behaviors. Interventions focused on improving women's health behaviors may also impact the behaviors of children and other household members. Emphasizing the role of women on the health of children in such interventions may magnify this impact.

Abstract
Background Hispanic individuals are at increased risk for obesity and other chronic health conditions. This article evaluates the effect of a family-based, childhood obesity primary prevention intervention in a community setting. Methods A multi-site, randomized controlled trial community program with assessments at pre (T0), post-program (T1), and 6-months post-program (T2). Participating families were recruited from five sites. Only families of Mexican or Puerto Rican heritage with a least one child between 6 and 18 years were included in the study, without weight restrictions. Families were randomized to the intervention and control arms. Intervention families received six-2 h weekly workshops. Control families received printed generic nutrition and wellness information. Heights and weights were measured at the 3-time points to calculate BMI z-scores, BMI-percentiles, and weight status using age- and sex-specific growth charts, according to the CDC guidelines. Results There were no differences in BMI-z scores between children in the intervention (n = 239) and control groups (n = 187) at T0. BMI z-scores decreased in the intervention group (-0.03, 95% CI, -0.066, -0.003, p = 0.032) at T1, but not in the control group at T1. Changes in BMI z-scores were not statistically significant at T2. Conclusion The Abriendo Caminos intervention effectively prevented unhealthy weight gain in Hispanic children in the short-term, but not at 6-months post-intervention. Younger children and girls benefited more from the program at 6-months post-intervention. Additional efforts are needed to sustain long-term changes. Culturally-tailored programs can provide families with the knowledge to produce short-term changes and a potential pathway for sustainable changes in implementing healthy behaviors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the feasibility, acceptability and results of Strong Families Start at Home, a 6-month pilot trial of a home-based food parenting/nutrition intervention. DESIGN Pilot randomised controlled trial. SETTING Participants received six visits with a community health worker trained in motivational interviewing (three home visits, three phone calls); an in-home cooking or reading activity; personalised feedback on a recorded family meal or reading activity; text messages and tailored printed materials. PARTICIPANTS Parents and their 2-5-year-old child were randomised into intervention (responsive food parenting practices/nutrition) or control (reading readiness) groups. RESULTS Parents (n 63) were mostly mothers (90 %), Hispanic/Latinx (87 %), born outside the USA (62 %), with household incomes <$25 k (54 %). Despite delivery during COVID-19, 63 % of dyads were retained at 6 months. The intervention was delivered with high fidelity. All parents in the intervention group (n 24) expressed high levels of satisfaction with the intervention, which produced positive treatment effects for whole and total fruit component Healthy Eating Index-2015 scores (point estimate (PE) = 2·14, 95 % CI (0·17, 1·48); PE = 1·71, 95 % CI (0·16, 1·47), respectively) and negative treatment effects for sodium (PE = -2·09, 95 % CI (-1·35, -0·04)). Positive treatment effects also resulted for the following food parenting practices: regular timing of meals and snacks (PE = 1·08, 95 % CI (0·61, 2·00)), reducing distractions during mealtimes (PE = -0·79, 95 % CI (-1·52, -0·19)), using food as a reward (PE = -0·54, 95 % CI (-1·35, -0·04)) and providing a supportive meal environment (PE = 0·73, 95 % CI (0·18, 1·51)). CONCLUSION Given the continued disparities in diet quality among low-income and diverse families, continued efforts to improve child diet quality in fully powered intervention trials are needed.

Abstract
Employing an ecological approach, we sought to identify social determinants of obesity among Hispanics/Latinos and non-Hispanic whites living in the Southeast US. Data on social determinants of obesity (individual, family, community and cultural/contextual) were collected from 217 participants [106 Hispanics/Latinos; 111 non-Hispanic whites]; height and weight were objectively measured. We compared prevalence of overweight and obese between ethnic groups and BMI values within each group by social determinants. Hispanics had a 1.9-fold increase (OR 1.93, 95% CI: 1.05-3.55) in overweight prevalence compared to non-Hispanic whites after adjusting for age and gender. We found positive estimates between unfavorable family-level determinants and BMI among Hispanic/Latinos. In contrast, non-Hispanic whites who reported unfavorable neighborhood characteristics had higher BMI's. Findings highlight the need for targeted approaches for the prevention and control of obesity.

Abstract
Background Modifying the environment to promote healthy foods is a population-based approach for improving diet. This study evaluated the outcome effectiveness of a food store intervention that used structural and social change strategies to promote fruits and vegetables. It was hypothesized that intervention versus control store customers would improve their consumption of fruits and vegetables at 6 months. Trial design Clustered randomized controlled trial Methods Sixteen pair-matched stores were randomized to an intervention or wait-list control condition. With the research team’s support, intervention stores modified the availability, accessibility, and promotion of fruits and vegetables, including augmenting produce displays within the store and building employees’ capacity to place and promote fruits and vegetables throughout the store (Phase 1), followed by the delivery of a customer-directed marketing campaign for 6 months (Phase 2). From months 7 to 12, stores were encouraged to maintain strategies on their own (Phase 3). Customer-reported daily fruit and vegetable consumption (cups/day) were collected by blinded research assistants at three time-points (baseline, 6 months and 12 months post-baseline) from 369 participating customers (an average of 23/store). Secondary outcomes included customer-reported fruit and vegetable purchasing and other behaviors. Results The study retained the 16 stores and most customers at 6 (91%) and 12 (89%) months. Although significant differences were not observed in the overall sample for vegetable consumption, male customers of intervention versus control stores consumed significantly more fruit daily at 6 months [mean (standard deviation) cups at baseline and six months; intervention: 1.6 (1.5) to 1.6 (1.5) vs. control: 1.4 (1.2) to 1.1 (0.8)]. However, this difference was not observed at 12 months, or among females. There was an overall increase in dollars spent at the targeted store in the intervention versus control condition among male versus female customers at 6 months; however, no change was observed in the percent of dollars spent on fruits and vegetables at the targeted store. Frequency of shopping at the targeted store did not modify intervention effects. Conclusions Structural and social change interventions can modify customers’ behavior in the short-term. Future research should consider methods for achieving longer-term changes, and potential generalizability to other products (e.g., energy-dense sweet and savory products). Abstract
Family-based interventions that incorporate culturally-tailored multi-component curricula and are grounded on evidence-based information and theoretical frameworks can help reduce the prevalence of obesity among Hispanic children. Abriendo Caminos: Clearing the Path to Hispanic Health is a multi-site culturally-tailored randomized control trial that aims to reduce obesity rates in Hispanic families by delivering education on nutrition, family wellness, and physical activity. This study evaluated the effect of the Abriendo Caminos six-week intervention on dietary behaviors of Hispanic children (6–18 years). Mothers (n = 365) reported their child’s eating behavior intake using the U.S. Department of Education’s Early Childhood Longitudinal Study protocol (ECLS). Pre/post dietary changes were evaluated using separate generalized estimating equation models adjusted for site, child sex, and child age group. Findings indicate a reduction in the frequency of sugar-sweetened beverages (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.35, 0.87, p = 0.01), French fries (OR 0.56, 95% CI 0.36, 0.86, p = 0.009), and fast food (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.36, 0.84, p = 0.006) consumption among children in the intervention arm. Additionally, children in the intervention arm increased their frequency of vegetable consumption (OR 1.84, 95% CI 1.08, 3.12, p = 0.03). The Abriendo Caminos intervention effectively improved four of eight eating behaviors in a short-term intervention.

Abstract
Effective evidence-informed family-based nutrition interventions for childhood obesity management are needed. (a) To assess the number and quality of published randomized controlled trials incorporating family-based nutrition interventions for childhood obesity (ages 5-18 years) management and (b) to identify intervention attributes (e.g., contact time, nutrition curricula, and behavior change strategies) used in successful interventions. Studies that met eligibility criteria were randomized controlled trials and family-based childhood obesity management interventions for children and adolescents ages 5-18 years old that included a healthy eating component and measured child dietary behaviors and/or parent dietary feeding practices. Six databases were searched: CINAHL complete, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, MEDLINE with full text (PubMed), PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus, and ERIC (EBSCO Host). The validated Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies was used to assess study quality. Eight studies met eligibility criteria. Study quality analysis showed that blinding of the research teams (e.g., analysts, and those focused on data collection) and the use of age appropriate, valid, and reliable instruments were areas of concern. Successful nutrition interventions targeting children 5-18 years old, appear to include setting family-based goals, modifying home food environment, hands-on approaches to teaching nutrition (games, group-based activities), and fruit and vegetable vouchers. This review highlighted a limited amount of moderate to high quality evidence to suggest that family-based nutrition interventions can be successful in improving dietary behaviors and that interventions with positive outcomes had some components of nutrition curricula and strategies in common.

Abstract
We evaluated outcomes from a healthy eating/nutrition label interpretation intervention among Latinx immigrant mothers and their daughters, aged 9-12 years, in Alabama. Between May 2013-October 2017, this cluster randomized controlled trial assigned 299 mother-daughter dyads to either a healthy eating (intervention) or HPV vaccination (control) study arm. Participants attended four group sessions delivered in Spanish by Lay Health Educators covering portion sizes, healthy eating/cooking strategies, and nutrition label reading/interpretation. An individual session in participants' homes reviewed pantries and developed healthy eating plans. Identical interviewer-administered surveys were completed at baseline and 7-month follow-up by both study arms. Retention rate at follow-up was 93.4% in intervention arm (92.6% in control arm). Positive changes in healthy eating behaviors and proficiency in nutrition label interpretation were assessed. Adjusting for marital status, employment status, and health insurance coverage status, when compared to controls, mothers in the intervention arm had greater odds of increasing daily fruit and vegetable consumption (OR 3.66, 95% CI 2.14-6.27, p < 0.001), decreasing weekly fried food intake (OR 4.3, 95% CI 2.3-8.04, p < 0.001), decreasing daily sweetened beverages (OR 2.07, 95% CI 1.22-3.52, p < 0.01), increasing frequency of reading nutrition labels (OR 12.58, 95% CI 6.81-23.22, p < 0.001), and correctly interpreting nutrition labels (OR 4.45, 95% CI 2.64-7.48, p < 0.001). Significant positive changes in targeted behaviors were not observed among daughters. A community-based, culturally relevant intervention that includes nutrition label interpretation can positively influence eating habits among Latinx immigrant mothers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lifestyles habits such as eating unhealthy foodscommence at home and are associated with the development of obesity and comorbidities such as insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and chronic degenerative diseases, which are the main causes of death in adults. The present study compared changes in dietary habits, behaviors and metabolic profiles of obese children whose mothers attended at the hospital to group sessions, with those who received the usual nutritional consultation. METHODS Randomized clinical trial, 177 mother/obese child pairs participated, 90 in the intervention group and 87 in the control group. The intervention group attended six group education sessions to promote healthy eating, being this an alternative of change of habits in children with obesity. The control group received the usual nutritional consultation; both groups were followed up for 3 months. Frequency of food consumption, behaviors during feeding in the house and metabolic profile was evaluated. Mixed effect linear regression models were used to evaluate the effect of the intervention on the variables of interest, especially in HOMA-IR. RESULTS The intervention group reduced the filling of their dishes (p = 0.009), forcing the children to finish meals (p = 0.003) and food substitution (p < 0.001), moreover increased the consumption of roasted foods (p = 0.046), fruits (p = 0.002) and vegetables (p < 0.001). The children in the control group slightly increased HOMA-IR levels (0.51; 95% CI - 0.48 to 1.50), while the children in the intervention group significantly decreased (- 1.22; 95% CI - 2.28 to - 1.16). The difference in HOMA-IR between the control and intervention group at the end of the follow-up was - 1.67; 95% CI: - 3.11 to - 0.24. CONCLUSIONS The educational intervention improved some eating habits at home, as well as HOMA-IR levels; why we consider that it can be an extra resource in the management of childhood obesity. BACKGROUND Insufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables in childhood increases the risk of future non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Testing the effects of interventions to increase consumption of fruit and vegetables, including those focused on specific child-feeding strategies or broader multicomponent interventions targeting the home or childcare environment is required to assess the potential to reduce this disease burden. OBJECTIVES To assess the effectiveness, cost effectiveness and associated adverse events of interventions designed to increase the consumption of fruit, vegetables or both amongst children aged five years and under. SEARCH METHODS We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase and two clinical trials registries to identify eligible trials on 25 January 2020. We searched Proquest Dissertations and Theses in November 2019. We reviewed reference lists of included trials and handsearched three international nutrition journals. We contacted authors of included trials to identify further potentially relevant trials. SELECTION CRITERIA We included randomised controlled trials, including cluster-randomised controlled trials and cross-over trials, of any intervention primarily targeting consumption of fruit, vegetables or both among children aged five years and under, and incorporating a dietary or biochemical assessment of fruit or vegetable consumption. Two review authors independently screened titles and abstracts of identified papers; a third review author resolved disagreements. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently extracted data and assessed the risks of bias of included trials; a third review author resolved disagreements. Due to unexplained heterogeneity, we used random-effects models in meta-analyses for the primary review outcomes where we identified sufficient trials. We calculated standardised mean differences (SMDs) to account for the heterogeneity of fruit and vegetable consumption measures. We conducted assessments of risks of bias and evaluated the quality of evidence (GRADE approach) using Cochrane procedures. MAIN RESULTS We included 80 trials with 218 trial arms and 12,965 participants. Fifty trials examined the impact of child-feeding practices (e.g. repeated food exposure) in increasing child vegetable intake. Fifteen trials examined the impact of parent nutrition education only in increasing child fruit and vegetable intake. Fourteen trials examined the impact of multicomponent interventions (e.g. parent nutrition education and preschool policy changes) in increasing child fruit and vegetable intake. Two trials examined the effect of a nutrition education intervention delivered to children in increasing child fruit and vegetable intake. One trial examined the impact of a child-focused mindfulness intervention in increasing vegetable intake. We judged 23 of the 80 included trials as free from high risks of bias across all domains. Performance, detection and attrition bias were the most common domains judged at high risk of bias for the remaining trials. There is low-quality evidence that child-feeding practices versus no intervention may have a small positive effect on child vegetable consumption, equivalent to an increase of 5.30 grams as-desired consumption of vegetables (SMD 0.50, 95% CI 0.29 to 0.71; 19 trials, 2140 participants; mean post-intervention follow-up = 8.3 weeks). Multicomponent interventions versus no intervention has a small effect on child consumption of fruit and vegetables (SMD 0.32, 95% CI 0.09 to 0.55; 9 trials, 2961 participants; moderate-quality evidence; mean post-intervention follow-up = 5.4 weeks), equivalent to an increase of 0.34 cups of fruit and vegetables a day. It is uncertain whether there are any short-term differences in child consumption of fruit and vegetables in meta-analyses of trials examining parent nutrition education versus no intervention (SMD 0.13, 95% CI -0.02 to 0.28; 11 trials, 3050 participants; very low-quality evidence; mean post-intervention follow-up = 13.2 weeks). We were unable to pool child nutrition education interventions in meta-analysis; both trials reported a positive intervention effect on child consumption of fruit and vegetables (low-quality evidence). Very few trials reported long-term effectiveness (6 trials), cost effectiveness (1 trial) or unintended adverse consequences of interventions (2 trials), limiting our ability to assess these outcomes. Trials reported receiving governmental or charitable funds, except for four trials reporting industry funding. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Despite identifying 80 eligible trials of various intervention approaches, the evidence for how to increase children's fruit and vegetable consumption remains limited in terms of quality of evidence and magnitude of effect. Of the types of interventions identified, there was moderate-quality evidence that multicomponent interventions probably lead to, and low-quality evidence that child-feeding practice may lead to, only small increases in fruit and vegetable consumption in children aged five years and under. It is uncertain whether parent nutrition education or child nutrition education interventions alone are effective in increasing fruit and vegetable consumption in children aged five years and under. Our confidence in effect estimates for all intervention approaches, with the exception of multicomponent interventions, is limited on the basis of the very low to low-quality evidence. Long-term follow-up of at least 12 months is required and future research should adopt more rigorous methods to advance the field. This is a living systematic review. Living systematic reviews offer a new approach to review updating, in which the review is continually updated, incorporating relevant new evidence as it becomes available. Abstract
The goals of this systematic review were to identify and describe paediatric obesity prevention interventions from infancy to late adolescence and to provide recommendations for future intervention research in light of a recently proposed developmental cascade (DC) model of paediatric obesity. We conducted an electronic search of randomized controlled trials with a minimum 6-month postintervention follow-up published between 1995 and 2019. We included 74 interventions: prenatal/infancy (n = 4), early childhood (n = 11), childhood (n = 38), early to mid-adolescence (n = 18), and late adolescence (n = 3). Infancy and early childhood trials targeted early feeding and positive parenting skills. Half of the childhood and adolescence trials were school based and used universal prevention strategies; those classified as selective or indicated prevention tended to involve the family for more intensive lifestyle modification. Less than 10% of studies followed participants over long periods of time (greater than or equal to 5 years), and only 16% and 31% of studies assessed intervention mediators and moderators, respectively. We recommend that future interventions focus on early prevention, assess long-term intervention effects, use a standardized taxonomy for defining intervention behavioural strategies, assess underlying mechanisms of action and intervention moderators, target parent and family management strategies across development, and increase scientific equity. We also provide specific recommendations regarding intervention targets for each developmental stage.

There is very low-quality evidence that child-feeding practices versus no intervention may have a small positive effect on child vegetable consumption equivalent to an increase of 4.45 g as-desired consumption of vegetables (SMD 0.42, 95% CI 0.23 to 0.60; 18 trials, 2004 participants; mean post-intervention follow-up = 8.2 weeks). Multicomponent interventions versus no intervention has a small effect on child consumption of fruit and vegetables (SMD 0.34, 95% CI 0.10 to 0.57; 9 trials, 3022 participants; moderate-quality evidence; mean post-intervention follow-up = 5.4 weeks), equivalent to an increase of 0.36 cups of fruit and vegetables per day.
