Abstract
Probiotics are effective in the treatment of diarrheal disease which is the second leading cause of death in children below the age of five years via the production of antimicrobial peptides and lactic acid. These live bacteria are known to benefit the host by modulating their gut microbiome and competitively excluding pathogens from the gut. As probiotics are live microbial cells, their safety evaluation is a concern that shifts the focus from the usage of live cells to parabiotics and postbiotics. In recent years attempts have been made to study the efficacy of postbiotics and parabiotics against enteric pathogens. Enteric pathogens are the major cause of diarrhea resulting in watery stools and electrolyte imbalance. Among various gastrointestinal illnesses, 30 % are caused by bacteria. These gastrointestinal infections in adults have usually mild to moderate symptoms that disappear spontaneously but, in some cases, they can cause chronic diseases such as typhoid, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis and bacteremia. The extensive use of antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial-infection-induced diarrhea has led to the emergence of drug resistance among these enteric pathogens. Drug resistance poses a major threat in the treatment of various other diseases as well. Further, the use of antibiotics is known to disrupt the homeostasis of the gut by killing the normal gut flora thereby worsening the situation. Therefore, the urgent need for new interventions to combat these enteric pathogens along with restoration of gut barrier. Lactobacillus-derived parabiotics and postbiotics have emerged as promising approaches for managing and treating diarrheal diseases. Therefore, our research is focused on studying the efficacy and underlying mechanisms of Lactobacillus spp.-derived postbiotics and parabiotics against enteric pathogens. Understanding these mechanisms helps in combatting diarrhea associated with enteric pathogens and results in reducing the morbidity and mortality rates associated with infectious diarrhea and its complications.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are widely known for the production of secondary metabolites such as organic acids and other bioactive compounds such as bacteriocins. Finding a broad application in food and healthcare, bacteriocins have received increased attention due to their inherent antimicrobial properties. However, the extraction of bacteriocins is often plagued with low yields due to the complexity of the extraction processes and the diversity of bacteriocins themselves. Here, we review the current knowledge related to bacteriocin extraction on the different extraction techniques for isolating bacteriocins from LAB. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique will also be critically appraised, taking into account factors such as extraction efficiency, scalability and cost-effectiveness. This review aims to guide researchers and professionals in selecting the most suitable approach for bacteriocin extraction from LAB by illuminating the respective advantages and limitations of various extraction techniques.

Abstract
Background: Colds are widespread infectious diseases that affect daily life, increasing healthcare costs and limiting productivity. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a dietary supplement containing specific probiotic strains (L. plantarum PBS067, L. acidophilus PBS066, B. lactis BL050) on cold symptom relief, immune response enhancement, and quality of life. Methods This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included 65 healthy volunteers (age range: 18-44 years), divided into two groups: 40 received the probiotic treatment (with vitamins and bulking agents), and 25 received placebo (vitamins and bulking agents only) for 12 weeks. Cold symptoms and systemic inflammation were assessed at three time points (baseline T0, post-treatment T1, and 6 weeks after treatment T2). Results: Probiotics were associated with a shorter average duration of cold symptoms (4.5 vs. 6.7% for Placebo, p < 0.05). At T1, fever and muscle pain occurred in 20% of participants in the Probiotic group vs. 28% and 44% in the Placebo group, respectively (p < 0.05 for muscle pain vs. Placebo). For muscle pain, a trend was maintained also at T2 (17.5% vs. 20%). The pro-inflammatory cytokine IFN-γ levels significantly decreased in the Probiotic group vs. T0 (p < 0.0001 at T1 and p < 0.01 at T2), while they increased in the Placebo group (22.279 ± 3.538 vs. 19.432 ± 3.143 pg/mL, p = NS). Although not statistically significant, at T1 the Probiotic group had higher levels of IL-10 vs. T0 (266.98 ± 78.432 vs. 240.967 ± 70.238, pg/mL p = NS). Conclusions: The probiotic mix effectively alleviated cold symptoms and reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, suggesting anti-inflammatory effects.

Abstract
Lacto-fermented fruits and vegetables (FVs) such as kimchi, sauerkraut, and fermented olives and nonalcoholic juices have a long history as dietary staples. Herein, the production steps and microbial ecology of lacto-fermented FVs are discussed alongside findings from human and laboratory studies investigating the health benefits of these foods. Lacto-fermented FVs are enriched in beneficial live microbes and bioactive compounds, including lactic and acetic acids, phenolic compounds, bacteriocins, and amino acid derivatives such as indole-3-lactic acid, phenyl-lactic acid, and γ-aminobutyric acid. At least 11 human studies have been performed on kimchi, whereas others have been investigated in only one or two trials. Besides exploring the health benefits, it is imperative to ensure that these foods made either commercially or at home have minimal risk for foodborne illness and exposure to undesired compounds like biogenic amines. Development of starter-culture strains and production protocols can lead to lacto-fermented FVs designed for specific health benefits.

Abstract
Aim This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial efficacy of probiotic-derived cell-free supernatants (CFS) encapsulated within nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) against multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. Additionally, it aimed to identify specific bioactive compounds that contribute to the reported antibacterial properties by characterizing the metabolite substances present in the CFS using a metabolomic analysis technique. Methods Eight strains of lactic acid bacteria including Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L22F and L25F), Pediococcus acidilactici (P72N, BF9, BF 14, BYF 20 and BYF 26) and Ligilactobacillus salivarius (BF 12) were selected as probiotic candidates. The inhibitory activity of their cell free supernatant (CFS) was tested against clinical strains of P. aeruginosa and S. pseudintermedius isolated from skin wounds of dogs and cats. An untargeted metabolomic approach based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) identified potential antibacterial metabolites in the CFS. Cell-Free Supernatants-Nanostructured Lipid Carriers (CFS-NLCs) were developed, and their antibacterial activity and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were analysed. Results Despite the strong multidrug-resistant nature of the pathogens, CFS displayed a moderate antibacterial activity against most tested strains. The acidic nature of the CFS, combined with bioactive antibacterial metabolites like Kanzonol V and 1-Hexanol, likely contributed to its inhibitory effects against pathogenic bacteria; notably, Kanzonol V was abundant in the CFS of L22F, BF12 and BYF26 (L22F_CFS, BF12_CFS and BYF26_CFS), while 1-Hexanol was particularly enriched in CFS of P72N (P72N_CFS), with both compounds effectively targeting bacterial cell membranes to disrupt cell integrity, leading to bacterial cell death. Other beneficial compounds such as Pyroglutamylleucine, Trigoneoside VIII and 18-Nor-4(19),8,11,13-abietatetraene which are likely to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, were also detected in the CFS. The CFS-NLCs maintained their antibacterial activity and 30-60% dilutions of product completely inhibited the growth of pathogen strains even after three-months storage at room temperature. Conclusion These findings suggest that CFS-NLCs could be a promising biotic therapy for treating hospital infections such as canine dermatitis and otitis caused by multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa and S. pseudintermedius.

Abstract
Bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are promising bioactive peptides. Intriguingly, bacteriocins have health benefits to the host and may be applied safely in the food industry as bio-preservatives or as therapeutic interventions preventing intestinal diseases. In recent years, finding a safe alternative approach to conventional treatments to promote gut health is a scientific hotspot. Therefore, this review aimed to give insight into the promising applications of LAB-bacteriocins in preventing intestinal diseases, such as colonic cancer, Helicobacter pylori infections, multidrug-resistant infection-associated colitis, viral gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and obesity disorders. Moreover, we highlighted the recent research on bacteriocins promoting gastrointestinal health. The review also provided insights into the proposed mechanisms, challenges and opportunities, trends and prospects. In addition, a SWOT analysis was conducted on the potential applications. Based on properties, biosafety, and health functions of LAB-bacteriocins, we conclude that the future applications of LAB-bacteriocins are promising in promoting gastrointestinal health. Further in vivo trials are needed to confirm these potential effects of LAB-bacteriocins interventions.

Abstract
Modern cancer diagnostics and treatment options have greatly improved survival rates; the illness remains a major cause of mortality worldwide. Current treatments for cancer, such as chemotherapy, are not cancer-specific and may cause harm to healthy cells; therefore, it is imperative that new drugs for cancer be developed that are both safe and effective. It has been found that lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have the potential to produce bacteriocins, which could potentially offer a promising alternative for cancer treatment. They have been shown in several studies to be effective against cancer cells while having no effect on healthy cells. More research is needed to fully understand the potential of LAB bacteriocins as anti-cancer medicines, to find the appropriate dose and delivery route, and to conduct clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the products in human patients, as is suggested by this work. Furthermore, LAB bacteriocins may evolve into a significant new class of anti-cancer drugs and food products. Patients with cancer may have a safe and effective alternative treatment option in the form of anti-cancer foods and drugs. Therefore, the aim of this study is to provide an in-depth analysis of the recent breakthroughs and potential future technical advancements of significant bacteriocins that are produced by LAB, how these bacteriocins function, and how these bacteriocins may be utilized as an anti-cancer agent. In addition, the current analysis emphasizes the significant constraints and boundaries that bacteriocins face when they are used as an anti-cancer factor.

Abstract
Cancer poses a severe threat to human health. Although conventional chemotherapy remains a cornerstone of cancer treatment, its significant side effects and the growing issue of drug resistance necessitate the urgent search for more efficient and less toxic anticancer drugs. In recent years, bacteriocins, antimicrobial peptides of microbial origin, have garnered significant attention due to their targeted antitumor activity. This unique activity is mainly attributed to their cationic and amphiphilic nature, which enables bacteriocins to specifically kill tumor cells without harming normal cells. When involving non-membrane-disrupting mechanisms, such as apoptosis induction, cell cycle blockade, and metastasis inhibition, the core mechanism of action is achieved by disrupting cell membranes, which endows bacteriocins with low drug resistance and high selectivity. However, the susceptibility of bacteriocins to hydrolysis and hemolysis in vivo limits their clinical application. To overcome these challenges, structural optimization of bacteriocins or their combination with nanotechnology is proposed for future development. This review aims to study the mechanism of action and current research status of bacteriocins as anticancer treatments, thus providing new insights for their clinical development and application.

Abstract
Breast cancer is associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. As about 20-30% of patients exhibiting ER-positive phenotype are resistant to hormonal treatment with the standard drug tamoxifen, finding new therapies is a necessity. Postbiotics, metabolites, and macromolecules isolated from probiotic bacteria cultures have been proven to have sufficient bioactivity to exert prohealth and anticancer effects, making them viable adjunctive agents for the treatment of various neoplasms, including breast cancer. In the current study, postbiotics derived from L. plantarum and L. rhamnosus cultures were assessed on an in vitro breast cancer model as potential adjunctive agents to therapy utilizing tamoxifen and a candidate aziridine-hydrazide hydrazone derivative drug. Cell viability and cell death processes, including apoptosis, were analyzed for neoplastic MCF-7 cells treated with postbiotics and synthetic compounds. Cell cycle progression and proliferation were analyzed by PI-based flow cytometry and Ki-67 immunostaining. Postbiotics decreased viability and triggered apoptosis in MCF-7, modestly affecting the cell cycle and showing a lack of negative impact on normal cell viability. Moreover, they enhanced the cytotoxic effect of tamoxifen and the new candidate drug toward MCF-7, accelerating apoptosis and the inhibition of proliferation. This illustrates postbiotics' potential as natural adjunctive agents supporting anticancer therapy based on synthetic drugs.

Abstract
Digestive cancers are among the leading causes of cancer death in the world. However, the mechanisms of cancer development and progression are not fully understood. Accumulating evidence in recent years pointing to the bidirectional interactions between gut dysbiosis and the development of a specific type of gastrointestinal cancer is shedding light on the importance of this "unseen organ"-the microbiota. This review focuses on the local role of the gut microbiota imbalance in different digestive tract organs and annexes related to the carcinogenic mechanisms. Microbiota modulation, either by probiotic administration or by dietary changes, plays an important role in the future therapies of various digestive cancers.

Abstract
Bacteriocins are highly diverse, abundant, and heterogeneous antimicrobial peptides that are ribosomally synthesized by bacteria and archaea. Since their discovery about a century ago, there has been a growing interest in bacteriocin research and applications. This is mainly due to their high antimicrobial properties, narrow or broad spectrum of activity, specificity, low cytotoxicity, and stability. Though initially used to improve food quality and safety, bacteriocins are now globally exploited for innovative applications in human, animal, and food systems as sustainable alternatives to antibiotics. Bacteriocins have the potential to beneficially modulate microbiota, providing viable microbiome-based solutions for the treatment, management, and non-invasive bio-diagnosis of infectious and non-infectious diseases. The use of bacteriocins holds great promise in the modulation of food microbiomes, antimicrobial food packaging, bio-sanitizers and antibiofilm, pre/post-harvest biocontrol, functional food, growth promotion, and sustainable aquaculture. This can undoubtedly improve food security, safety, and quality globally. This review highlights the current trends in bacteriocin research, especially the increasing research outputs and funding, which we believe may proportionate the soaring global interest in bacteriocins. The use of cutting-edge technologies, such as bioengineering, can further enhance the exploitation of bacteriocins for innovative applications in human, animal, and food systems.

Abstract
Campylobacter and Salmonella are the two most prominent foodborne zoonotic pathogens reported in the European Union. As poultry is one of the major sources of these pathogens, it is imperative to mitigate the colonization of these pathogens in poultry. Many strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have demonstrated anti-Salmonella and anti-Campylobacter characteristics to varying degrees and spectrums which are attributed to the production of various metabolites. However, the production of these compounds and consequent antimicrobial properties are highly strain dependent. Therefore, the current study was performed to select a potent LAB and determine its causal attribute in inhibiting Salmonella enterica and Campylobacter jejuni, in-vitro. Six LAB (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (LP), Lacticaseibacillus casei (LC), Limosilactobacillus reuteri (LR), Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (LRh), Leuconostoc mesenteroides (LM) and Pediococcus pentosaceus (PP)) and three serovars of Salmonella enterica (Typhimurium, Enterica and Braenderup) and Campylobacter jejuni were used in the current study. Spot overlays, well diffusion, co-culture and co-aggregation assays against Salmonella and well diffusion assays against Campylobacter jejuni were performed. Organic acid profiling of culture supernatants was performed using HPLC. The results indicated that LRh, LM and PP had the most significant anti-Salmonella effects while LP, LC, LM and PP displayed the most significant anti-Campylobacter effects. Lactic acid and formic acid detected in the culture supernatants seem the most likely source of the anti-Salmonella and anti-Campylobacter effects exhibited by these LAB. In conclusion, Leuconostoc mesenteroides displayed the most significant overall anti-pathogenic effects when compared to the other LAB strains studied, indicating its potential application in-vivo.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The intestine harbors a large population of microorganisms that interact with epithelial cells to maintain host healthy physiological status. These intestinal microbiota engage in the fermentation of non-digestible nutrients and produce beneficial metabolites to regulate host homeostasis, metabolism, and immune response. The disruption of microbiota, known as dysbiosis, has been implicated in many intestinal diseases, including colorectal cancer (CRC). As the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, CRC poses a significant health burden. There is an urgent need for novel interventions to reduce CRC incidence and improve clinical outcomes. Modulating the intestinal microbiota has emerged as a promising approach for CRC prevention and treatment. Current research efforts in CRC probiotics primarily focus on reducing the incidence of CRC, alleviating treatment-related side effects, and potentiating the efficacy of anticancer therapy, which is the key to successful translation to clinical practice. This paper aims to review the traditional probiotics and new interventions, such as next-generation probiotics and postbiotics, in the context of CRC. The underlying mechanisms of probiotic anti-cancer effects are also discussed, including the restoration of microbial composition, reinforcement of gut barrier integrity, induction of cancer cell apoptosis, inactivation of carcinogens, and modulation of host immune response. This paper further evaluates the novel strategy of probiotics as an adjuvant therapy in boosting the efficacy of chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Despite all the promising findings presented in studies, the evaluation of potential risks, optimization of delivery methods, and consideration of intra-patient variability of gut microbial baseline must be thoroughly interpreted before bench-to-bedside translation.

Abstract
Background Lactic acid bacteria produce various beneficial metabolites, including antimicrobial agents. Owing to the fast-rising antibiotic resistance among pathogenic microbes, scientists are exploring antimicrobials beyond antibiotics. In this study, we examined four Lactobacillus strains, namely L. plantarum 42, L. brevis 205, L. rhamnosus 239, and L. delbrueckii 263, isolated from healthy human microbiota, to evaluate their antibacterial and antifungal activity. Methods Lactobacillus strains were cultivated, and the conditioned media were obtained. The supernatant was then used to treat pathogenic bacteria and applied to the growth media containing fungal and bacterial strains. Additionally, the supernatant was separated to achieve the organic and aqueous phases. The two phases were then examined in terms of bacterial and fungal growth rates. Disk diffusion and MIC tests were conducted to determine strains with the most growth inhibition potential. Finally, the potent strains identified through the MIC test were tested on the pathogenic microorganisms to assess their effects on the formation of pathogenic biofilms. Results The organic phase of L. rhamnosus 239 extracts exhibited the highest antibacterial and antibiofilm effects, while that of L. brevis 205 demonstrated the most effective antifungal impact, with a MIC of 125 µg/mL against Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Conclusion This study confirms the significant antimicrobial impacts of the lactic acid bacteria strains on pathogenic bacteria and fungi; hence, they could serve as a reliable alternative to antibiotics for a safe and natural protection against pathogenic microorganisms.

Abstract
Lactobacillus plantarum NMD-17 separated from koumiss could produce a bacteriocin named plantaricin MX against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. The bacteriocin synthesis of L. plantarum NMD-17 was remarkably induced in co-cultivation with Lactobacillus reuteri NMD-86 as the increase of cell numbers and AI-2 activity, and the expressions of luxS encoding signal AI-2 synthetase, plnB encoding histidine protein kinase, plnD encoding response regulator, and plnE and plnF encoding structural genes of bacteriocin were significantly upregulated in co-cultivation, showing that the bacteriocin synthesis of L. plantarum NMD-17 in co-cultivation may be regulated by LuxS/AI-2-mediated quorum sensing system. In order to further demonstrate the role of LuxS/AI-2-mediated quorum sensing system in the bacteriocin synthesis of L. plantarum NMD-17, plasmids pUC18 and pMD18-T simple were used as the skeleton to construct the suicide plasmids pUC18-UF-tet-DF and pMD18-T simple-plnB-tet-plnD for luxS and plnB-plnD gene deletion, respectively. luxS and plnB-plnD gene knockout mutants were successfully obtained by homologous recombination. luxS gene knockout mutant lost its AI-2 synthesis ability, suggesting that LuxS protein encoded by luxS gene is key enzyme for AI-2 synthesis. plnB-plnD gene knockout mutant lost the ability to synthesize bacteriocin against Salmonella typhimurium ATCC14028, indicating that plnB-plnD gene was a necessary gene for bacteriocin synthesis of L. plantarum NMD-17. Bacteriocin synthesis, cell numbers, and AI-2 activity of luxS or plnB-plnD gene knockout mutants in co-cultivation with L. reuteri NMD-86 were obviously lower than those of wild-type strain in co-cultivation at 6-9 h (P < 0.01). The results showed that LuxS/AI-2-mediated quorum sensing system played an important role in the bacteriocin synthesis of L. plantarum NMD-17 in co-cultivation.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal cancer is a common clinical malignant tumor disease that seriously endangers human health and lacks effective treatment methods. The positive charge of antimicrobial peptides under neutral conditions determines their high selectivity to tumor cells. In addition, antimicrobial peptides also have unique anticancer mechanisms, such as inducing apoptosis, autophagy, cell cycle arrest, membrane destruction, and inhibition of metastasis, which highlights the low drug resistance and high specificity of antimicrobial peptides. In this review, we summarize the related studies on antimicrobial peptides in the treatment of digestive tract tumors, mainly oral cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, and colorectal cancer. This paper describes the therapeutic advantages of antimicrobial peptides due to their unique anticancer mechanisms. The length, net charge, and secondary structure of antimicrobial peptides can be modified by design or modification to further enhance their anticancer effects. In summary, as an emerging cancer treatment drug, antimicrobial peptides need to be further studied to realize their application in gastrointestinal cancer diseases.

Abstract
Cell-free supernatant of Lactobacillus plantarum exhibit a strong antimicrobial effect against a number of pathogenic enterobacteria (E. coli, Shigella flexneri, Salmonella typhimurium, Proteus mirabilis, and Campylobacter jejuni). The degree of growth inhibition in broth culture reached a high level for all tested bacteria. The highest rates were noted for P. mirabilis (by 13 times) and the lowest for S. flexneri (by 5 times) and C. jejuni (by 4.5 times). Significant antiproliferative effect of the supernatant on cells of tumor-derived epithelial cell lines was shown. The highest degree of inhibition (by 22 times) was observed for HT-29 cells (colon carcinoma). Thus, inclusion of probiotics in traditional treatment schemes can increase the effectiveness of antibacterial and antitumor drug therapy.

Abstract
Diet, lifestyle, and gut microbiota composition are key risk factors for the progression of colon cancer. Probiotics are living microorganisms that can offer health benefits to the parasitifer when ingested in competent quantities. Several in vivo, in vitro, and clinical studies have demonstrated that probiotics can prevent and mitigate the development of colon cancer. The anti-colon cancer mechanisms of probiotics include the suppression of cell proliferation and the promotion of cancer cell apoptosis, immunomodulation, the modulation of intestinal microorganisms and their metabolism, strengthening the intestinal barrier, and antioxidant effects. This article describes the pathogenesis of colon cancer and the available therapeutic options. In addition, this paper reviews the mechanisms by which probiotics mitigate colon cancer as well as the mitigating effects of probiotic components and metabolites on colon cancer.

Abstract
Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) produces an antimicrobial peptide known as plantaricin. Plantaricin-producing L. plantarum is of interest for its gut-friendly nature, wide range of sugar utilization, palatability, and probiotic attributes, making it a better candidate for the food industry. Numerous strains of plantaricin-producing L. plantarum have been isolated from different ecological niches and found to follow different mechanisms for plantaricin production. The mechanism of plantaricin production is sensitive to environmental factors; therefore, any alteration in the optimum conditions can inhibit/halt bacteriocin production. To regain the lost or hidden plantaricin-producing character of the L. plantarum strains under ideal laboratory conditions, it is essential to understand the mechanism of plantaricin production. Previously, discrete information on various mechanisms of plantaricin production has been elaborated. However, based on the literature analysis, we observed that a systematic classification of plantaricins produced by L. plantarum is not explored. Hence, we aim to collect information about rapidly emerging plantaricins and distribute them among the different classes of bacteriocin, followed by classifying them based on different mechanisms of plantaricin production. This may help scaleup the bacteriocin production at industrial levels, which is otherwise challenging to achieve. This will also help the reader understand plantaricins and their mechanism of plantaricin production to a deeper extent and to characterize/reproduce the peptide where plantaricin production is a hidden character. KEY POINTS: • L. plantarum produces the antimicrobial compound plantaricin. • L. plantarum has different regulatory operons which control plantaricin production. • Based on the regulatory operon, the mechanism of plantaricin production is different.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a multifactorial disease with increased morbidity and mortality rates globally. Despite advanced chemotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of CRC, low survival rates due to the regular occurrence of drug resistance and deleterious side effects render the need for alternative anticancer agents imperative. Accumulating evidence supports that gut microbiota imbalance precedes the establishment of carcinogenesis, subsequently contributing to cancer progression and response to anticancer therapy. Manipulation of the gut microbiota composition via the administration of probiotic-derived bioactive compounds has gradually attained the interest of scientific communities as a novel therapeutic strategy for CRC. These compounds encompass miscellaneous metabolic secreted products of probiotics, including bacteriocins, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), lactate, exopolysaccharides (EPSs), biosurfactants, and bacterial peptides, with profound anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative properties. This review provides a classification of postbiotic types and a comprehensive summary of the current state of research on their biological role against CRC. It also describes how their intricate interaction with the gut microbiota regulates the proper function of the intestinal barrier, thus eliminating gut dysbiosis and CRC development. Finally, it discusses the future perspectives in precision-medicine approaches as well as the challenges of their synthesis and optimization of administration in clinical studies.

Abstract
Despite the remarkable advancement in the health care sector, cancer remains the second most fatal disease globally. The existing conventional cancer treatments primarily include chemotherapy, which has been associated with little to severe side effects, and radiotherapy, which is usually expensive. To overcome these problems, target-specific nanocarriers have been explored for delivering chemo drugs. However, recent reports on using a few proteins having anticancer activity and further use of them as drug carriers have generated tremendous attention for furthering the research towards cancer therapy. Biomolecules, especially proteins, have emerged as suitable alternatives in cancer treatment due to multiple favourable properties including biocompatibility, biodegradability, and structural flexibility for easy surface functionalization. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have reported that various proteins derived from animal, plant, and bacterial species, demonstrated strong cytotoxic and antiproliferative properties against malignant cells in native and their different structural conformations. Moreover, surface tunable properties of these proteins help to bind a range of anticancer drugs and target ligands, thus making them efficient delivery agents in cancer therapy. Here, we discuss various proteins obtained from common exogenous sources and how they transform into effective anticancer agents. We also comprehensively discuss the tumor-killing mechanisms of different dietary proteins such as bovine α-lactalbumin, hen egg-white lysozyme, and their conjugates. We also articulate how protein nanostructures can be used as carriers for delivering cancer drugs and theranostics, and strategies to be adopted for improving their in vivo delivery and targeting. We further discuss the FDA-approved protein-based anticancer formulations along with those in different phases of clinical trials.

Abstract
The gut of babies born vaginally is rapidly colonized by Bifidobacterium spp. after birth, while in infants born by cesarean section (C-section), the presence of bifidobacteria drops dramatically, increasing the risk of developing gastrointestinal disorders. Considering that newborns naturally come into contact with maternal lactobacilli as they pass through the birth canal, the aim of this work is to exploit for the first time the bifidogenic activity exerted by the cell-free supernatants (CFSs) from lactobacilli of vaginal origin, belonging to the species Lactobacillus crispatus, Lactobacillus gasseri, Limosilactobacillus vaginalis, and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum. CFSs were recovered after 7 h, 13 h, and 24 h of fermentation and assessed for the ability to stimulate the planktonic growth and biofilms of Bifidobacterium strains belonging to species widely represented in the gut tract. A bifidogenic effect was observed for all CFSs; such activity was maximal for CFSs recovered in exponential phase and was strongly dependent on the species of lactobacilli. Importantly, no stimulating effects on an intestinal Escherichia coli strain were observed. CFSs from L. vaginalis BC17 showed the best bifidogenic profile since they increased bifidobacterial planktonic growth by up to 432% and biofilm formation by up to 289%. The CFS at 7 h from BC17 was successfully formulated with a hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel aimed at preventing and treating breast sores in lactating women and exerting bifidogenic activity in infants born mainly by C-section. IMPORTANCE Bifidobacteria in the gut tract of infants play crucial roles in the prevention of gastrointestinal diseases and the maturation of the immune system. Consequently, strategies to trigger a bifidogenic shift in the infant gut are highly desirable. Evidences suggest that the presence of a maternal vaginal microbiota dominated by health-promoting lactobacilli and the development of a bifidobacterium-enriched gut microbiota in newborns are interconnected. In this context, we found out that the cell-free supernatants from lactobacilli of vaginal origin were able to effectively stimulate the proliferation of Bifidobacterium spp. grown in free-floating and biofilm forms. The cell-free supernatant from Limosilactobacillus vaginalis BC17 showed excellent bifidogenic behavior, which was preserved even after its incorporation into a nipple formulation for lactating women. Lactobacilli derivatives, such as cell-free supernatants, have gained increasing interest by virtue of their safer profile than that of living cells and can be proposed as an ecosustainable approach to favor gut colonization of infants by bifidobacteria.

Abstract
The proteinaceous compounds produced by lactic acid bacteria are called bacteriocins and have a wide variety of bioactive properties. However, bacteriocin's commercial availability is limited due to short stability periods and low yields. Therefore, the objective of this study was to synthesize bacteriocin-derived silver nanoparticles (Bac10307-AgNPs) extracted from Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus), which may have the potential to increase the bioactivity of bacteriocins and overcome the hurdles. It was found that extracted and purified Bac10307 had a broad range of stability for both temperature (20-100 °C) and pH (3-12). Further, based on Sodium dodecyl-sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis, its molecular weight was estimated to be 4.2 kDa. The synthesized Bac10307-AgNPs showed a peak of surface plasmon resonance at 430 nm λmax. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) confirmed the presence of biological moieties, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) coupled with Energy dispersive X-Ray (EDX) confirmed that AgNPs were spherical and irregularly shaped, with a size range of 9-20 nm. As a result, the Bac10307-AgNPs displayed very strong antibacterial activity with MIC values as low as 8 μg/mL for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), when compared to Bac10307 alone. In addition, Bac10307-AgNPs demonstrated promising in vitro antioxidant activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) (IC50 = 116.04 μg/mL) and in vitro cytotoxicity against human liver cancer cells (HepG2) (IC50 = 135.63 μg/mL), more than Bac10307 alone (IC50 = 139.82 μg/mL against DPPH and 158.20 μg/mL against HepG2). Furthermore, a protein-protein molecular docking simulation study of bacteriocins with target proteins of different biological functions was also carried out in order to ascertain the interactions between bacteriocins and target proteins.

Abstract
Human milk not only provides a perfect balance of nutrients to meet all the needs of the infant in the first months of life but also contains a variety of bacteria that play a key role in tailoring the neonatal faecal microbiome. Microbiome analysis of human milk and infant faeces from mother-breastfed infant pairs was performed by sequencing the V1-V3 region of the 16S rRNA gene using the Illumina MiSeq platform. According to the results, there is a connection in the composition of the microbiome in each mother-breastfed infant pair, supporting the hypothesis that the infant's gut is colonised with bacteria from human milk. MiSeq sequencing also revealed high biodiversity of the human milk microbiome and the infant faecal microbiome, whose composition changes during lactation and infant development, respectively. A total of 28 genetically distinct strains were selected by hierarchical cluster analysis of RAPD-PCR (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA-Polymerase Chain Reaction) electrophoresis profiles of 100 strains isolated from human milk and identified by 16S RNA sequencing. Since certain cellular molecules may support their use as probiotics, the next focus was to detect (S)-layer proteins, bacteriocins and exopolysaccharides (EPSs) that have potential as therapeutic biomolecules. SDS-PAGE (Sodium Dodecyl-Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis) coupled with LC-MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) analysis revealed that four Levilactobacillus brevis strains expressed S-layer proteins, which were identified for the first time in strains isolated from human milk. The potential biosynthesis of plantaricin was detected in six Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strains by PCR analysis and in vitro antibacterial studies. 1H NMR (Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) analysis confirmed EPS production in only one strain, Limosilactobacillus fermentum MC1. The overall microbiome analysis suggests that human milk contributes to the establishment of the intestinal microbiota of infants. In addition, it is a promising source of novel Lactobacillus strains expressing specific functional biomolecules.

Abstract
In this study, we brought together X-ray induced photodynamic therapy (X-PDT) and chemo-drug (5-FU) for the treatment on colorectal cancer cells. This was achieved by developing a lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticle delivery system (FA-LPNPs-VP-5-FU). It was prepared by incorporating a photosensitizer (verteporfin), chemotherapy drug (5-FU) and a targeting moiety (folic acid) into one platform. The average size of these nanoparticles was around 100 nm with low polydispersity. When exposed to clinical doses of 4 Gy X-ray radiation, FA-LPNPs-VP-5-FU generated sufficient amounts of reactive oxygen species, triggering the apoptosis and necrosis pathway of cancer cells. Our combined X-PDT and chemo-drug strategy was effective in inhibiting cancer cells' growth and proliferation. Cell cycle analyses revealed that our treatment induced G2/M and S phase arrest in HCT116 cells. Our results indicate that this combined treatment provides better antitumour effect in colorectal cancer cells than each of these modalities alone. This may offer a novel approach for effective colorectal cancer treatment with reduced off-target effect and drug toxicity.

Abstract
Simple Summary Current cancer treatment strategies such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, have significant drawbacks. There is a need for a breakthrough approach to cancer treatment. Bacteriocin, an antimicrobial peptide, has shown several anticancer properties in vitro. Therefore, this article reviews the effect of bacteriocin on cancer cells and how bacteriocins affect cancer cells in vitro. This article aims to promote additional bacteriocin research, particularly in vivo studies, to fully understand the potential of bacteriocin as a cancer treatment agent. Abstract Cancer is regarded as one of the most common and leading causes of death. Despite the availability of conventional treatments against cancer cells, current treatments are not the optimal treatment for cancer as they possess the possibility of causing various unwanted side effects to the body. As a result, this prompts a search for an alternative treatment without exhibiting any additional side effects. One of the promising novel therapeutic candidates against cancer is an antimicrobial peptide produced by bacteria called bacteriocin. It is a non-toxic peptide that is reported to exhibit potency against cancer cell lines. Experimental studies have outlined the therapeutic potential of bacteriocin against various cancer cell lines. In this review article, the paper focuses on the various bacteriocins and their cytotoxic effects, mode of action and efficacies as therapeutic agents against various cancer cell lines.

Abstract
The gut microbiota is implicated in diverse interactions affecting human health. The present study reports a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study conducted by administering a new synbiotic formulation composed of two Lactobacillus strains (L. plantarum and L. acidophilus) and one Bifidobacterium strain (B. animalis subsp. lactis) and two types of fructans (fructo-oligosaccharides with a degree of polymerization of 3–5 and inulin-type fructans with 10 DP). The effects of this synbiotic were evaluated on healthy subjects for 28 days and the maintenance of its efficacy was evaluated at the end of a follow-up period of 28 days. The synbiotic treatment contributes to higher biodiversity of the gut microbiota, increasing the community richness with respect to the group with the prebiotics alone and the placebo group. Its positive effect is also reflected in the variation of microbial community structure favoring the beneficial short-chain fatty acids bacterial producers. The amelioration of the health status of the subjects was also established by the reduction of common infectious disease symptom incidence, the stimulation of the gut immune system showing a noteworthy variation of fecal β-defensin2 and calprotectin levels, and the modulation of the response of the respiratory tract’s immune system by salivary IgA as well as total antioxidant capacity biomarkers.

Abstract
In the face of the growing demand for functional food, the search for new sources of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) becomes a priority. In our research, we used multiplied culture conditions followed by identification via the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry for seeking LAB strains in plant- and animal-derived sources. Furthermore, the selected LAB isolates were examined for their proteolytic activity as well as antimicrobial action against different bacterial pathogens. The applied method appeared to be useful tool for searching LAB strains within different types of the biological matrices. The best source of the LABs was from calf. Comparing properties of the two selected LABs, those isolated from calf demonstrated the greatest proteolytic and antibacterial properties suggesting that gastrointestinal microbiota are the most valuable LAB source. Nevertheless, second selected strain derived from pickled cucumber juice may be also treated as a promising source of potential probiotic strains.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro antioxidant potential of Bacillus coagulans T242. B. coagulans T242 showed better antioxidant activities, including the 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) free radical scavenging ability, lipid peroxidation inhibiting ability and reducing ability, than those exerted by Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG). B. coagulans T242 positively regulated the expression of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-relatedfactor 2/Kelch-like ECH-associated protein-1 (Nrf2/Keap1) pathway-related proteins (Nrf2, Keap1, heine oxygenase-1 (HO-1)); increased antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD)); reduced the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) level; decreased the expression of inflammatory-related cytokines interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α); and thus increased the survival rate in 2,2'-azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH)-damaged HT-29 cells. This study proved that B. coagulans T242 exerted antioxidative effects by quenching oxygen free radicals and activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway in HT-29 cells.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LABs) are known to secrete species-specific secondary metabolites that could be utilized as novel therapeutics against multi-drug resistant pathogens. This study aimed to investigate the antagonistic and probiotic properties of LABs isolated from the vaginal ecosystem of healthy women and to assess the stability of their antagonistic metabolites. Among 43 strains isolated from healthy women, eight LAB strains exhibited detectable BLISs (bacteriocin-like substances) producing ability against E. faecalis (JH-86), S. aureus (JH-68), Streptococcus sp. (JH-80), and E. coli (JH-101), with zone of inhibition (ZI) ranging from 9.00 to 20.33 mm and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) from 62.5 to 500 μL/mL, respectively. The partially purified compounds extracted from cell free supernatant (CFS) displayed an increase in antagonistic activity based on ZI, 9.67-30.17 mm and MICs, 3.91-15.63 mg/mL, respectively. In a time-kill study, both crude and partially purified compounds of Limosilactobacillus reuteri (MT180537), Pediococcus pentosaceus (MT176555), Limosilactobacillus pontis (MW362838), and Levilactobacillus brevis (MW362790) exhibited significant bactericidal action against E. faecalis (MW051601), the most frequent etiological agent of aerobic vaginitis (AV). The active secondary metabolites from L. reuteri (MT180537), P. pentosaceus (MT176555), and L. pontis (MW362838) were protein in nature and remained stable under different physicochemical conditions. Regarding probiotic properties, the strains presented probiotic characteristics, i.e., good acid, bile salt tolerance, aggregation properties, and biofilm formation. The strains were susceptible to most of the commonly used antibiotics and had no hemolytic activity. In conclusion, antagonistic compounds or BLIS produced by L. reuteri (MT180537) could be investigated further for preparation of ointments to treat AV.

Abstract
The loss of fresh produce along the supply chain represents a significant contributor to environmental and economic burden. Although technological advances in distribution and storage have provided a means to reduce the loss of fresh produce, in resource-limited settings, these technologies may not be available. One attractive approach to help address this limitation is to use edible coatings to protect fresh produce from biotic and abiotic factors that cause food deterioration. Here, we developed edible coatings from materials that are cheap and easy to prepare: maize starch, κ-carrageenan, and agar as the matrix; glycerol as the plasticizer; and Lactobacillus plantarum TPB21.12 as the active ingredient. Using fresh cut apples as a model substrate, we found that maize starch coating retained color, agar coating delayed browning, and κ-carrageenan coating decreased mass shrinkage of the fresh cut apples. L. plantarum TPB21.12 remained viable in the edible coating suspensions during storage and was active against Escherichia coli TPB21.8, a model bacterium for biotic factor that causes food spoilage. The simplicity of the edible coating formulation and preparation method offers an attractive approach for applications to help protect fresh produce from deterioration and reduce food loss and waste generation.

Abstract
In recent years, commensal bacteria colonizing the human body have been recognized as important determinants of health and multiple pathologic conditions. Among the most extensively studied commensal bacteria are the gut microbiota, which perform a plethora of functions, including the synthesis of bioactive products, metabolism of dietary compounds, and immunomodulation, both through attenuation and immunostimulation. An imbalance in the microbiota population, i.e., dysbiosis, has been linked to many human pathologies, including various cancer types and neurodegenerative diseases. Targeting gut microbiota and microbiome-host interactions resulting from probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics is a growing opportunity for the effective treatment of various diseases. As more research is being conducted, the microbiome field is shifting from simple descriptive analysis of commensal compositions to more molecular, cellular, and functional studies. Insight into these mechanisms is of paramount importance for understanding and modulating the effects that microbiota, probiotics, and their derivatives exert on host health.

Abstract
A variety of bacteriocins originate from lactic acid bacteria, which have recently been modified by scientists. Many strains of lactic acid bacteria related to food groups could produce bacteriocins or antibacterial proteins highly effective against foodborne pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas fluorescens, P. aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Shigella flexneri, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Clostridium botulinum. A wide range of bacteria belonging primarily to the genera Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus have been characterized with different health‐promoting attributes. Extensive studies and in‐depth understanding of these antimicrobials mechanisms of action could enable scientists to determine their production in specific probiotic lactic acid bacteria, as they are potentially crucial for the final preservation of functional foods or for medicinal applications. In this review study, the structure, classification, mode of operation, safety, and antibacterial properties of bacteriocins as well as their effect on foodborne pathogens and antibiotic‐resistant bacteria were extensively studied.

Abstract
Lactiplantibacillus plantarum MTCC 2621 is a well-characterized probiotic strain and is reported to possess many health benefits. However, the wound healing potential of this probiotic is yet to be explored. Here, we have assessed the antibacterial, antioxidant, and wound healing activities of cell-free supernatant of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum MTCC 2621 (Lp2621). Lp2621 exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against the indicator bacteria in the agar well diffusion assay. Lp2621 did not show any hemolytic activity. The safety of Lp2621 gel was established using the skin irritation assay in BALB/c mice, and no dermal reactions were observed. The supernatant showed 60–100% protection of A549 cells against H2O2-induced stress. In the scratch assay, Lp2621 accelerated wound healing after 24 h of treatment. The percent wound healing was significantly higher in cells treated with Lp2621 at 18–24 h posttreatment. In an excision wound healing in mice, topical application of Lp2621 gel showed faster healing than the vehicle- and betadine-treated groups. Similar wound healing activity was observed in wounds infected with Staphylococcus aureus. Histological examination revealed better wound healing in Lp2621-treated mice. Topical treatment of the wounds with Lp2621 gel resulted in the upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 in the early phase of wound healing and enhanced IL-10 expression in the later phase. These findings unveil a protective role of Lp2621 against bacterial infection, oxidative stress, and wound healing.

Abstract
More than 6 billion bacteria and other microorganisms live in the adult oral cavity. As a result of any deleterious effect on this community, some microorganisms will survive better than others, which may trigger pathogenic processes like caries, halitosis, gingivitis or periodontitis. Oral dysbiosis is among the most frequent human health hazards globally. Quality of life of patients deteriorates notably, while treatments are often unpleasant, expensive and irreversible, e.g. tooth loss. In the experiments reported here, we investigated the individual interactions between 8 pathogenic and 8 probiotic strains and a commercially available probiotic product. Almost all pathogens, namely Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus gordonii, Enterococcus faecalis and Prevotella buccae are pathogens frequently occurring in the oral cavity. The used probiotic strains were Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Bifidobacterium thermophilum and two Streptococcus dentisani isolates. Using a modified agar diffusion method, we investigated capability of the probiotic bacteria to prevent the growth of the pathogenic ones in order to identify candidates for future therapeutic treatments. The results indicated successful bacteriocin production, i.e. growth inhibition, against every pathogenic bacterium by at least 5 probiotic strains.

Abstract
Probiotics were defined as microbial strains that confer health benefits to their consumers. The concept has evolved during the last twenty years, and today metabolites produced by the strains, known as postbiotics, and even dead cells, known as paraprobiotics are closely associated to them. The isolation of commensal strains from human microbiome has led to the development of next generation probiotics. This review aims to present an overview of the developments in the area of cancer prevention and treatment, intimately related to advances in the knowledge of the microbiome role in its genesis and therapy. Strain identification and characterization, production processes, delivery strategies and clinical evaluation are crucial to translate results into the market with solid scientific support. Examples of recent tools in isolation, strain typification, quality control and development of new probiotic strains are described. Probiotics market and regulation were originally developed in the food sector, but these new strategies will impact the pharmaceutical and health sectors, requiring new considerations in regulatory frameworks.

LuxS-mediated quorum sensing system in Lactobacillus plantarum NMD-17 from koumiss: induction of plantaricin MX in co-cultivation with certain lactic acid bacteria. Abstract
A bacteriocin termed plantaricin MX with a broad antimicrobial spectrum was produced by Lactobacillus plantarum NMD-17, which was isolated from Inner Mongolia traditional koumiss of china. Among 300 strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) belonging to the genera Lactococcus, Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Leuconostoc, and Enterococcus, five strains including Lactobacillus reuteri NMD-86, Lactobacillus helveticus NMD-137, Lactococcus lactis NMD-152, Enterococcus faecalis NMD-178, and Enterococcus faecium NMD-219 were revealed to significantly induce the bacteriocin synthesis and greatly increase the cell numbers of Lactobacillus plantarum NMD-17 and activity of AI-2 signaling molecule. Bacteriocin synthesis was not increased by cell-free supernatants and autoclaved cultures of inducing strains, demonstrating that intact cells of inducing strains were essential to the induction of bacteriocin synthesis. The existence of bacteriocin structural plnEF genes and the plnD and luxS genes involved in quorum sensing was confirmed by PCR, and the presence of plnB gene encoding histidine protein kinase was determined by single oligonucleotide nested PCR (Son-PCR). Quantitative real-time PCR demonstrated that plnB, plnD, luxS, plnE, and plnF genes of L. plantarum NMD-17 were upregulated significantly (P < 0.01) in co-cultivation with L. reuteri NMD-86. The results showed that the bacteriocin synthesis of L. plantarum NMD-17 in co-cultivation might have a close relationship with LuxS-mediated quorum sensing system.

Abstract
The use of bacteriocins holds great promise in different areas such as health, food, nutrition, veterinary, nanotechnology, among others. Many research groups worldwide continue to advance the knowledge to unravel a novel range of therapeutic agents and food preservatives. This review addresses the advances of bacteriocins and their producer organisms as biocontrol agents for applications in the medical industry and agriculture. Furthermore, the bacteriocin mechanism of action and structural characteristics will be reviewed. Finally, the potential role of bacteriocins to modulate the signaling in host-associated microbial communities will be discussed.

Abstract
Botrytis cinerea, responsible for grey mold, represents the first biological cause of fruit and vegetable spoilage phenomena in post-harvest. Kiwifruit is a climacteric fruit particularly prone to this mold infestation during storage. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are food-grade bacteria that can synthesize several metabolites with antimicrobial activity and are, therefore, suggested as promising and eco-friendly resources for the bio-control of molds on fruits and vegetables. In this work, we propose the screening of a collection of 300 LAB previously isolated from traditional sourdoughs for their ability to counteract in vitro the growth of Botrytis cinerea CECT 20973. Only 2% of tested LAB strains belonging to Lactiplantibacillus plantarum species, exerted a strong antagonism against B. cinerea. The cell-free supernatants were partially characterized and results clearly indicated that high levels of lactic acid contributed to the antagonistic activity. PAN01 and UFG 121 cell-free supernatants were investigated as potential bio-control agents in a preliminary in vivo assay using freshly cut kiwifruits as a food model. The application of cell-free supernatants allowed to delay the growth of B. cinerea on artificially contaminated kiwifruits until two weeks. The antagonistic activity was greatly affected by the storage temperature (25 °C and 4 °C) selected for the processed fruits, suggesting the importance to include microbial-based solution in a broader framework of hurdle technologies.

Abstract
Despite recent advances in the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC), low patient survival rate due to emergence of drug resistant cancer cells, metastasis and multiple deleterious side effects of chemotherapy, is a cause of public concern globally. To negate these clinical conundrums, search for effective and harmless novel molecular entities for the treatment of CRC is an urgent necessity. Since antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are part of innate immunity of living beings, it is quite imperative to look for essential attributes of these peptides which may contribute to their effectiveness against carcinogenesis. Once identified, those characteristics can be suitably modified using several synthetic and computational techniques to further enhance their selectivity and pharmacokinetic profiles. Hence, this review analyses scientific reports describing the antiproliferative action of AMPs derived from several sources, particularly focusing on various colon cancer in vitro/in vivo investigations. On perusal of the literature, it appears that AMPs based therapeutics would definitely find special place in CRC therapy in future either alone or as an adjunct to chemotherapy provided some necessary alterations are made in their natural structures to make them more compatible with modern clinical practice. In this context, further in-depth research is warranted in adequate in vivo models.

Abstract
This study was aimed to isolate and partially characterizes the bacteriocin produced by an L. plantarum sp. isolated from traditional sourdough. The bacteriocin was partially purified, and after treating it with different harsh conditions, its antibacterial activity was evaluated against L. monocytogenes as an indicator. Also, the growth phase during which the bacteriocin is produced, and its mode of action, was examined. Finally, the molecular weight of this compound was evaluated by using SDS-PAGE analysis. According to the results, this bacteriocin had a molecular weight well lower than 10 kDa that was mainly produced at the early stationary phase and reached its highest activity (3,200 AU/ml) at the same stage. It was tolerant toward a wide range of pH (2-10), temperatures (-20 to 120°C), and high concentrations of NaCl. Notably, the bacteriocin-producing strain had proteolytic activity, while the bacteriocin produced by that showed resistance to proteolytic enzymes (pepsin, trypsin, and proteinase K). Also, it was revealed that the bacteriocin activity is mostly bacteriostatic so that it considerably inhibits pathogens' growth, particularly S. aureus, E. coli, and L. monocytogenes. These characteristics prove that strain and its bacteriocin can be considered as one of the most promising agents to use in the food industry.

Abstract
Lactobacilli comprise an important group of probiotics for both human and animals. The emerging concern regarding safety problems associated with live microbial cells is enhancing the interest in using cell components and metabolites derived from probiotic strains. Here, we define cell structural components and metabolites of probiotic bacteria as paraprobiotics and postbiotics, respectively. Paraprobiotics and postbiotics produced from Lactobacilli consist of a wide range of molecules including peptidoglycans, surface proteins, cell wall polysaccharides, secreted proteins, bacteriocins, and organic acids, which mediate positive effect on the host, such as immunomodulatory, anti-tumor, antimicrobial, and barrier-preservation effects. In this review, we systematically summarize the paraprobiotics and postbiotics derived from Lactobacilli and their beneficial functions. We also discuss the mechanisms underlying their beneficial effects on the host, and their interaction with the host cells. This review may boost our understanding on the benefits and molecular mechanisms associated with paraprobiotics and probiotics from Lactobacilli, which may promote their applications in humans and animals.

Abstract
The bacterial strain, EMM-1, was isolated from the rhizosphere of red maize ("Rojo Criollo") and identified as Pseudomonas protegens EMM-1 based on phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA, rpoB, rpoD, and gyrB gene sequences. We uncovered genes involved in the production of antimicrobial compounds like 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (2,4-DAPG), pyoluteorin, and lectin-like bacteriocins. These antimicrobial compounds are also produced by other fluorescent pseudomonads alike P. protegens. Double-layer agar assay showed that P. protegens EMM-1 inhibited the growth of several multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, especially clinical isolates of the genera Klebsiella and β-hemolytic Streptococcus. This strain also displayed inhibitory effects against diverse fungi, such as Aspergillus, Botrytis, and Fusarium. Besides, a crude extract of inhibitory substances secreted into agar was obtained after the cold-leaching process, and physicochemical characterization was performed. The partially purified inhibitory substances produced by P. protegens EMM-1 inhibited the growth of Streptococcus sp. and Microbacterium sp., but no inhibitory effect was noted for other bacterial or fungal strains. The molecular weight determined after ultrafiltration was between 3 and 10 kDa. The inhibitory activity was thermally stable up to 60°C (but completely lost at 100°C), and the inhibitory activity remained active in a wide pH range (from 3 to 9). After treatment with a protease from Bacillus licheniformis, the inhibitory activity was decreased by 90%, suggesting the presence of proteic natural compounds. All these findings suggested that P. protegens EMM-1 is a potential source of antimicrobials to be used against pathogens for humans and plants.
