Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was carried out to investigate the individual and combined contamination of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), deoxynivalenol (DON), and zearalenone (ZEN) in feeds in China between 2021 and 2024. A total of 23,003 feed samples, including 17,489 feedstuff samples and 5,514 complete feed samples, were collected from different provinces of China for mycotoxin analysis. RESULTS The analyzed mycotoxins displayed considerably high contamination in the feed samples, with the individual contamination of AFB1, DON, and ZEN were 20.0%-100%, 33.3%-100%, and 85.0%-100%, respectively. The average concentrations of AFB1, DON, and ZEN were 1.2-728.7 μg/kg, 106-8,634.8 μg/kg, and 18.1-3,341.6 μg/kg, respectively. Notably, the rates over China's safety standards for AFB1, DON, and ZEN in raw ingredients were 9.7%, 2.7%, and 15.7%, respectively. Meanwhile, 3.5%, 1.1%, and 8.7% of analyzed complete feeds exceeded China's safety standards for AFB1, DON, and ZEN, respectively. Moreover, the co-contamination rates of AFB1, DON, and ZEN in more than 70% of raw ingredients and 87.5% of complete feed products were 60.0%-100% and 61.5%-100%, respectively. CONCLUSION This study reveals that the feeds in China have commonly been contaminated with AFB1, DON, and ZEN alone and their combination during the past four years. These findings highlight the significance of monitoring mycotoxin contaminant levels in domestic animal feed and the importance of carrying out feed administration and remediation strategies for mycotoxin control.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of astaxanthin (AST) supplementation in drinking water on the growth performance, intestinal barrier function, and cecal microbiota of broilers challenged with Salmonella Enteritidis. During the 20-day experiment, two hundred and forty 1-day-old male Arbor Acres birds were randomly assigned into a 2 × 2 factorial design with four groups: a non-challenged control (CON), an S. Enteritidis-challenged group (SA), a group receiving AST treatment (AST), and an S. Enteritidis-challenged group receiving AST treatment (SA+AST). Each treatment comprised six replicate groups, and challenged groups were inoculated with S. Enteritidis from day 2 to day 4. The results indicated that S. Enteritidis infection significantly reduced the average daily feed intake (ADFI) in broilers and adversely affected average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) by day 20. AST supplementation significantly improved FCR. While S. Enteritidis infection did not significantly affect ileal mucosa antioxidation, it significantly decreased villus height and the villus height-to-crypt depth ratio (VCR), and significantly downregulated mRNA expression of ZO-1 and Occludin. However, AST supplementation significantly enhanced antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), increased villus height and VCR in the ileum, and notably upregulated ZO-1 and MUC2 expression levels, particularly mitigating the adverse effects of S. Enteritidis infection on ileal crypt depth. Furthermore, S. Enteritidis infection significantly affected both the α- and β-diversity of cecal microbiota. Infection with S. Enteritidis was associated with changes at the phylum level, including significant increases in Alistipes, unclassified_f__Lachnospiraceae, and bacteria of the Clostridia UCG-014 grouping, alongside notable decreases in Bacteroides, Akkermansia, Blautia, and Butyricicoccus. AST supplementation significantly decreased the abundance of norank_f__Ruminococcaceae and increased the abundance of Lachnoclostridium and unclassified_f__Lachnospiraceae in the challenged group. In conclusion, AST supplementation in drinking water could improve growth performance and intestinal health in broilers challenged with S. Enteritidis.

Abstract
Trichothecenes (TCNs), Fusarium-derived mycotoxins exemplified by deoxynivalenol and T-2 toxin, threaten global health through multisystem toxicity and widespread contamination. Natural phenolic compounds (NPCs), leveraging their intrinsic safety and natural abundance, demonstrate multimechanistic efficacy in counteracting TCN toxicity. This article reviews both domestic and international research on the protective mechanisms of NPCs against TCN-induced toxicity. NPCs exert protective effects against TCN toxicity through multitiered mechanisms: (1) molecular regulation via Nrf2-centric antioxidant activation and MAPK/NF-κB inflammatory axis suppression, coupled with coordinated inhibition of programmed cell death pathways (apoptosis/ferroptosis/pyroptosis) and autophagy modulation, where GPX4 emerges as a critical ferroptosis regulator; (2) restoring microbiome balance, enhancing intestinal barrier function, and optimizing nutrient transport. Gut microflora may also serve as an additional target for NPCs in mitigating the toxicity of TCNs. NPCs further inhibit Fusarium proliferation and mycotoxin biosynthesis. While there is demonstrated potential for food safety and sustainable feed development, critical challenges persist in bioavailability optimization, pharmacokinetic profiling, and microbiota-metabolite crosstalk. This analysis advances NPC-based strategies for mycotoxin detoxification and sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a mycotoxin ubiquitously present in the environment. Emerging evidence demonstrated that sulforaphane (SFN) exerts potent protective effects against DON-triggered cytotoxicity through multimodal mechanisms. This study aimed to investigate the protective mechanism of SFN during DON exposure. Untargeted metabolomics of IPEC-J2 cells revealed a total of 399 differential metabolites between the DON and control group and 365 differential metabolites between the SFN + DON and DON group. KEGG enrichment was performed to investigate the potential regulatory pathways. The transcriptome identified a total of 1839 differential expression genes (DEGs) between DON and SFN + DON groups. This result indicated that DON exposure and SFN treatment have a profound impact on cellular metabolism and genes. Integrated analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome showed that spermine was a potential biomarker for SFN treatment. SFN increased spermine abundance by regulating genes in glutathione, beta-alanine, and arginine and proline metabolism pathways. Functional experiments demonstrated that spermine alleviated DON-induced oxidative stress, as evidenced by increased cell viability, reduced ROS levels, restored mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), and normalized antioxidant enzyme activity. Moreover, spermine significantly decreased the cell apoptosis rate induced by DON, which suggested that spermine significantly alleviated the DON-induced cytotoxicity. Overall, these findings elucidated the protective role of SFN through spermine-related mechanisms against the toxicity of DON.

Abstract
(1) Background: Glucuronolactone (GLU) is a glucose metabolite with antioxidant activity. At present, the exact role of it in regulating the intestinal health of piglets under weaning stress is not clear. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of GLU on the growth performance and intestinal health of piglets under weaning stress and to explore potential mechanisms. (2) Methods: Twenty-four weaned piglets were randomly assigned into two groups, with one group receiving a basal diet and the other group receiving an experimental diet supplemented with 200 mg/kg of GLU. (3) Results: GLU increased the ADG, ADFI, and final body weight of piglets, while reducing the diarrhea rate. Mechanistically, GLU alleviates weaning stress-induced intestinal oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in piglets partly through activating the Nrf2-Akt signaling pathway to suppress the transcriptional activity of FOXO1, while also inhibiting the activation of the TLR4-MAPK signaling pathway to reduce the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, GLU increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus reuteri in the ileum of piglets and improved the composition of the gut microbiota. (4) Conclusions: GLU reduced inflammation and oxidative stress through the Nrf2/Akt/FOXO1 signaling pathway and improved intestinal health, resulting in improved growth performance of the piglets.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a prevalent foodborne contaminant present in crops, posing significant risks to food safety and public health worldwide. Mitochondria, as the primary target of DON, play a crucial role in DON-mediated gastrointestinal toxicity. Taurine, a multifunctional nutrient, has been reported to exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects by modulating mitochondrial function. However, whether taurine could alleviate intestinal injury by restoring mitochondrial function under DON exposure remains unclear. To address this knowledge gap, this study systematically investigated the potential protective effects of taurine on DON-induced intestinal damage in a piglet model. Twenty-four piglets were randomly assigned to four groups for 24 days: BD group (basal diet), DON group (3 mg/kg DON-contaminated diet), DON+LT group (DON diet with 0.3 % taurine), and DON+HT group (DON diet with 0.6 % taurine). Serum samples were collected for biochemical analysis, while jejunal tissues were examined for histology, barrier function, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, mitochondrial function, as well as related gene and protein expression. The results revealed that taurine effectively restored jejunal morphology disrupted by DON, as evidenced by increases in villus height/width and the villus height to crypt depth ratio. It preserved intestinal barrier integrity, reflected by reductions in diamine oxidase and D-lactate levels, alongside increased expression of genes and proteins related to intestinal mucus and mechanical barrier function. Furthermore, taurine mitigated intestinal oxidative stress by reducing reactive oxygen species, 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, and malondialdehyde levels, while enhancing antioxidant defenses. It also alleviated inflammation by suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines and attenuated intestinal epithelial apoptosis through mitochondrial caspase-dependent and apoptosis-inducing factor-mediated pathways. Intriguingly, taurine improved the damaged mitochondrial structure and functionality within the intestinal epithelium irritated by DON. This improvement included enhanced respiratory chain complex activity, increased ATP levels, and mtDNA copy number. Additionally, taurine regulated gene expression related to mitochondrial respiration, fusion, fission, and autophagy. Simultaneously, taurine reversed the DON-induced inhibition of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PGC1α)-nuclear respiratory factor 1/2 (NRF1/2) axis, a critical pathway regulating mitochondrial biogenesis, respiratory function, and oxidative stress responses. Correlation analysis revealed significant associations between the PGC1α-NRF1/2 axis and mitochondrial function, as well as correlations with intestinal health parameters, including barrier function, redox status, inflammation, and apoptosis. In summary, this study provides the first evidence that dietary taurine supplementation effectively alleviates intestinal injury in DON-challenged piglets through mitochondrial restoration, which is strongly associated with the reactivation of the PGC1α-NRF1/2 axis. Our findings highlight the potential of mitochondrial-targeted therapies to mitigate gastrointestinal toxicity caused by the foodborne contaminant DON in both humans and animals.

Abstract
Physical exercise is an essential component of human health. In recent years, scientific research has focused on identifying natural compounds and formulating new supplements aimed at enhancing athletic performance, accelerating muscle recovery, and minimizing the damage caused by physical exertion. The use of antioxidants to counteract the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) following physical activity (PA) is already a widely adopted practice. Resveratrol (RES), a polyphenol belonging to the stilbene class, is well known for its potent antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory effects primarily attributed to the activation of sirtuins. RES possesses multiple nutraceutical properties used for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory, cardiovascular, neoplastic, and infectious diseases, thus attracting attention to study its use in combination with physical exercise to promote well-being. Animal trials combining RES and PA have mainly reported improvements in muscle, energy, and cardiovascular functions. The data presented and discussed in this narrative review are from Pubmed, Scopus, and the Human Gene Database (search limited to 2011 to 2025 with the keywords RES, sirtuins, and physical activity altogether or in combination with each other). This review gathers several studies on RES focusing on its nutraceutical properties, epigenetic activities via sirtuins, and the potential benefits of combining RES with PA in maintaining health and well-being based on trials performed first in animals and later in humans. Human studies have been conducted on various populations, including active adults, sedentary individuals, patients with diseases, and elderly individuals. Some studies have confirmed the benefits of RES observed in animal experiments. However, in some cases, no substantial differences were found between RES supplementation and the control group. In conclusion, the benefits of RES on PA reported in the literature are still not fully evident, given the contrasting studies and the still limited number of trials, but both RES and PA are successful tools for the maintenance of health and wellbeing.

Abstract
The role of gut microbiota has become a research hotspot in recent years; however, whether the gut microbiota are involved in the alleviation or exacerbation of Deoxynivalenol (DON) toxicity has not been fully studied. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate whether the gut microbiota are involved in reducing or aggravating the intestinal damage induced by DON in mice. Mice that received or did not receive antibiotic-induced intestinal flora clearance were orally given DON (5 mg kg/bw/day) for 14 days. At the end of the experiment, serum, intestinal tissue samples and colon contents were collected for further analysis. DON caused development of severe histopathological damage, such as necrosis and inflammation of the jejunum and colon in mice without gut microbiota clearance. The levels of tight junction proteins ZO-1 and occludin were reduced in the jejunum and colon of mice without gut microbiota clearance. In addition, the mRNA and protein levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) were increased in mice without gut microbiota clearance. The presence of microbiota exacerbate the intestinal damage induced by DON via changes in gut microbiota abundance and production of gut damaging metabolites.

Abstract
Stilbenoids are a class of naturally occurring phenolic compounds found in various plant species, characterized by a stilbene backbone with diverse substituents that confer a range of biological activities. These compounds exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, making them promising candidates for improving intestinal health. The intestinal tract plays a critical role in nutrient digestion, absorption, and immune defense, and maintaining its integrity is vital for animal growth. Stilbenoids contribute to gut health by enhancing intestinal morphology, supporting mucosal immune responses, regulating gut microbiota composition, modulating metabolic pathways, and maintaining mitochondrial health. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of key stilbenoids, including resveratrol, pterostilbene, piceatannol, and oxyresveratrol, focusing on their biological effects and regulatory mechanisms. By highlighting their roles in mitigating intestinal inflammation and promoting gut function, this review provides a basis for the practical application of stilbenoids in animal health and husbandry.

Abstract
This study examined how Eucommia ulmoides flavonoids (EUF) protect against intestinal oxidative stress induced by deoxynivalenol (DON) in weaned piglets. Forty weaned piglets were randomly assigned to four dietary groups for a period of 14 days. The piglets were fed a control diet (Control) or the Control diet supplemented with 100 mg EUF/kg (EUF group), 4 mg DON/kg diet (DON group) or both (EUF+DON group) in a 2×2 factorial design. DON-challenged piglets on the EUF-supplemented diet showed significant improvements in growth performance. They also had notably lower serum levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) compared to those not receiving supplementation (P<0.05). In the EUF group, the relative weights of the liver, spleen, and kidneys were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). However, there were no significant differences in the relative heart weights among the four groups (P>0.05). Piglets challenged with DON and fed a diet supplemented with EUF showed significantly lower levels of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) mRNA and protein expression in serum and intestinal tissues compared to those in the DON group (P < 0.05). The EUF+DON group significantly increased the serum levels of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and total antioxidative capability enzymes compared to the DON group (P<0.05). The EUF and DON group had significantly higher villus height, crypt depth, and villus height to crypt depth ratio in the small intestine compared to the supplemented DON-challenged piglets (P<0.05). Moreover, compared to the DON group, EUF can significantly enhance the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nfr2)/Kelch-like ECH-associating protein 1(Keap1) and antioxidant genes (i.e., HO-1, GCLC, GCLM), as well as their proteins in the DON-induced small intestines of piglets (P<0.05). In conclusion, EUF helps protect piglets from intestinal oxidative stress caused by DON by influencing the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway, thereby supporting their intestinal health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diarrhea and intestinal dysfunction commonly occur in young mammals, causing malnutrition and growth retardation in both human and livestock. As the traditional Chinese herb, mulberry leaf contains various bioactive compounds and showed several health benefits, such as regulating glucose and lipid metabolism, and modulating gut microbiota. Mulberry leaf exhibits the potential to modulate redox homeostasis and improve gut health, but the function and underlying mechanisms remains elucidative. PURPOSE To investigate the benefit of mulberry leaf on intestinal barrier in weanling pigs, illustrate the possible involvement of Keap1-Nrf2 mediated anti-oxidation and gut microbiota. METHODS Chemical compositions of mulberry leaf powder (MLP) and mulberry leaf extract (MLE) were determined. The effects of MLP on growth performance, intestinal barrier integrity, anti-oxidative capacity, immune function and gut microbiota were evaluated in weaned pigs. The regulation of redox homeostasis by MLE and the involvement of Keap1-Nrf2 signaling were further determined in H2O2 induced oxidative stress (OS) model in IPEC-J2 cells via determining reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by flow cytometry and related protein abundance by western blot analysis. RESULTS In weanling pigs, MLP reduced diarrhea incidence, and increased villus height, intestinal integrity and expression of tight junctions in intestinal mucosa. The improvement of intestinal barrier by MLP was associated with the enhancement in anti-oxidative capacity and the changes in gut microbiota and related short chain fatty acids production. Our study further revealed the direct regulation of MLE on tight junction expressions and ROS production to alleviate H2O2 induced OS in IPEC-J2 cells via the activating Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS Mulberry leaf in diet improved epithelial barrier via the direct anti-oxidation through the activation of Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway and the indirect modulation of gut microbiota in weaned pigs.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination causes the grievous injury in public and animal health, poultry suffer from the greater toxin challenge. Probiotic have been considered as a potential way to mitigate the deleterious effects of DON. In this study, a total of 144 1-day-old Arbor Acres chickens were randomly assigned into 3 groups: control group, DON group (5 mg/kg DON diet), DJ group (1×109 cfu Lactiplantibacillus plantarum JM113/kg DON diet). The results showed that Lactiplantibacillus plantarum JM113 (L. plantarum JM113) increased the growth performance of 21-day-old broilers that challenged by the DON (P < 0.05), and the DON-induced disorder of jejunal morphology was recovered in DJ group (P < 0.05). Compared with the DON group, the mRNA and protein levels of Nrf2 and NQO-1 were upregulated in jejunum of DJ group broilers (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, administration of L. plantarum JM113 effectively increased the expression level of barrier-related genes, and the protein abundance of occludin and claudin1 (P < 0.05). L. plantarum JM113 restored the mRNA and protein abundance of PCNA, and proliferation-linked gene (Lgr5 and Bmi1) expression levels in jejunum of DON-insulted broilers (P < 0.05). Furthermore, administration of L. plantarum JM113 significantly enhanced the relative abundance of s_Limosilactobacillus_reuteri in jejuna of DON-challenged broilers (P < 0.05). Spearman correlation analysis showed that s_Limosilactobacillus_reuteri was positively associated with the jejunal barrier related genes (P < 0.05). In conclusion, L. plantarum JM113 alleviated the toxic effects of DON by regulating the jejunal function through microbial adjustment. Our findings proposed a viable approach to mitigating the adverse effects of deoxynivalenol exposure in broilers.

Abstract
The absence of trace amounts of natural bioactive compounds with important biological activities in traditional dietary models for global farm animals, coupled with an incomplete theoretical system for animal nutrition, has led to unbalanced and inadequate animal nutrition. This deficiency has adversely impacted animal health and the ecological environment, presenting formidable challenges to the advancement of the swine breeding industry in various countries around the world toward high-quality development. Recently, due to the ban of antibiotics for growth promotion in swine diets, botanical active compounds have been extensively investigated as feed additives. Polyphenols represent a broad group of plant secondary metabolites. They are natural, non-toxic, pollution-free, and highly reproducible compounds that have a wide range of physiological functions, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antiviral, antibacterial, and metabolic activities. Accordingly, polyphenols have been widely studied and used as feed additives in swine production. This review summarizes the structural characteristics, classification, current application situation, general properties of polyphenols, and the latest research advances on their use in swine production. Additionally, the research and application bottlenecks and future development of plant polyphenols in the animal feed industry are reviewed and prospected. This review aims to stimulate the in-depth study of natural plant polyphenols and the research and development of related products in order to promote the green, healthy, and high-quality development of swine production, while also providing ideas for the innovation and development in the theoretical system of animal nutrition.

Abstract
"Personalized nutrition" aims to establish nutritional strategies to improve health outcomes for non-responders. However, it is utopian since most people share similar nutritional requirements. "Precision health," encompassing lifestyles, may be more fitting. Dietary (poly)phenols are "healthy" but non-nutritional molecules (thus, we can live without them). The gut microbiota influences (poly)phenol effects, producing metabolites with different activity than their precursors. Furthermore, producing distinctive metabolites, like urolithins, lunularin, and equol, leads to the term "polyphenol-related gut microbiota metabotypes," grouping individuals based on a genuine microbial metabolism of ellagic acid, resveratrol, and isoflavones, respectively. Additionally, (poly)phenols exert prebiotic-like effects through their antimicrobial activities, typically reducing microbial diversity and modulating microbiota functionality by impacting its composition and transcriptomics. Since the gut microbiota perceives (poly)phenols as a threat, (poly)phenol effects are mostly a consequence of microbiota adaptation through differential (poly)phenol metabolism (e.g., distinctive reductions, dehydroxylations, etc.). This viewpoint is less prosaic than considering (poly)phenols as essential nutritional players in human health, yet underscores their health significance in a coevolutionary partnership with the gut microbiota. In the perspective on the gut microbiota and (poly)phenols interplay, microbiota metabotypes could arbiter health effects. An innovative aspect is also emphasized: modulating the interacting microbial networks without altering the composition.

Abstract
Zearalenone (ZEA) is a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium spp. fungi and is widely found in moldy corn, wheat, barley, and other grains. ZEA is distributed to the whole body via blood circulation after metabolic transformation in animals. Through oxidative stress, immunosuppression, apoptosis, autophagy, and mitochondrial dysfunction, ZEA leads to hepatitis, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, abortion, and stillbirth in female animals, and decreased sperm motility in male animals. In recent years, due to the influence of climate, storage facilities, and other factors, the problem of ZEA pollution in global food crops has become particularly prominent, resulting in serious problems for the animal husbandry and feed industries, and threatening human health. Resveratrol (RSV) is a natural product with therapeutic activities such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. RSV can alleviate ZEA-induced toxic effects by targeting signaling pathways such as NF-κB, Nrf2/Keap1, and PI3K/AKT/mTOR via attenuating oxidative damage, inflammatory response, and apoptosis, and regulating cellular autophagy. Therefore, this paper provides a review of the protective effect of RSV against ZEA-induced toxicity and its molecular mechanism, and discusses the safety and potential clinical applications of RSV in the search for natural mycotoxin detoxification agents.

Abstract
Introduction Resveratrol (RSV) is a natural polyphenolic compound derived from a variety of plants that possesses a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-aging, anti-radiation damage, anti-apoptosis, immune modulation, regulation of glucolipid metabolism, inhibition of lipid deposition, and anti-neuro. It is therefore considered a promising drug with the potential to treat a wide range of diseases. Method In this study, using Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) and CiteSpace bibliometric tool, VOSviewer quantitatively visualized the number of countries, number of authors, number of institutions, number of publications, keywords, and references of 16,934 resveratrol-related papers from 2014-2023 for quantitative and qualitative analysis. Results The results showed that an average of 1693.4 papers were published per year, with a general upward trend. China had the most publications with 5877. China Medical University was the institution with the largest number of publications and the highest number of citations in the field. The research team was mainly led by Prof. Richard Tristan, and the journal with the highest number of published papers was Molecular. Dietary polyphenols, oxidative stress, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects are the most frequently cited articles. Oxidative stress, apoptosis, expression, and other keywords play an important role in connecting other branches of the field. Discussion Our analysis indicates that the integration of nanoparticles with RSV is poised to become a significant trend. RSV markedly inhibits harmful bacteria, fosters the proliferation of beneficial bacteria, and enhances the diversity of the intestinal flora, thereby preventing intestinal flora dysbiosis. Additionally, RSV exhibits both antibacterial and antiviral properties. It also promotes osteogenesis and serves a neuroprotective function in models of Alzheimer's disease. The potential applications of RSV in medicine and healthcare are vast. A future research challenge lies in modifying its structure to develop RSV derivatives with superior biological activity and bioavailability. In the coming years, innovative pharmaceutical formulations of RSV, including oral, injectable, and topical preparations, may be developed to enhance its bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy.

Abstract
Introduction Plant carbon black (PCB) is a new feed additive for zearalenone adsorption in China. However, information regarding whether PCB can effectively absorb deoxynivalenol (DON) is limited. Methods To explore this research gap, the present study examined the adsorption effectiveness of DON by PCB using a phosphate buffer, artificial gastric juice, and artificial intestinal juice. In a 21-day in vivo trial, 48 male piglets were randomly assigned to four treatment groups: (1) uncontaminated basal diet (CTR), (2) basal diet supplemented with 1 mg/kg PCB(PCB), (3) 2.3 mg/kg DON-contaminated diet (DON), and (4) 2.3 mg/kg DON-contaminated diet supplemented with 0.1% PCB (DON+PCB). Results When DON concentration was 1 µg/mL, the adsorption rate of PCB on DON in phosphate buffer systems (pH 2.0 and 6.0) and the artificial gastric and intestinal juices were 100%, 100%, 71.46%, and 77.20%, respectively. In the in vivo trial, the DON group significantly increased the DON+deepoxy-deoxynivalenol (DOM-1) content in serum as well as the inflammation cytokine proteins (interleukin-6, interleukin-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α) and mRNA expression of interleukin-6 and longchain acyl-CoA synthetase 4 in the jejunum and ileum. It decreased the villus height, goblet cells, mucosal thickness, and mRNA expression of Claudin-1 compared to the CTR group. In addition, DON decreased the Shannon and Simpson indices; reduced the relative abundances of Firmicutes, Lactobacillus, Candidatus_Saccharimonas, and Ruminococcus; and increased the relative abundances of Terrisporobacter and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 in the cecal content. Discussion In conclusion, these results suggest that PCB showed high adsorption efficacy on DON in vitro, and exhibit the protective effects against various intestinal toxicity manifestations in DON-challenged piglets.

Abstract
Early weaning-induced stress precipitates diarrhoea, significantly curtailing the growth performance of piglets. A pivotal contributor to this postweaning affliction is the emergence of gut bacterial dysbiosis. Enterococcus hirae, a promising probiotic, has indicated unclear effects and mechanisms on intestinal health. In this study, we investigated the effects and underlying mechanisms of oral supplementation with Ningxiang pig-derived Enterococcus hirae HNAU0516 orally supplementation on the gut bacterial community, immune response and gut barrier function in piglets. 21 d age Duroc × (Landrace × Yorkshire) piglets with a similar BW were randomly allocated to two groups. The Enterococcus hirae HNAU0516 administration group was inoculated orally with Ningxiang pig-derived Enterococcus hirae HNAU0516 throughout the trial period. Conversely, the control group received the same volume of physiological saline. Our findings revealed that Enterococcus hirae HNAU0516 supplementation effectively reduced diarrhoea rates of piglets (P = 0.010). Notably, this probiotic promoted intestinal development and enhanced intestinal barrier function. It also showed potential anti-inflammatory properties. Furthermore, Enterococcus hirae HNAU0516 supplementation significantly remodelled the colonic microbiota and increased the production of acetate (P = 0.007). In conclusion, our study highlights that Ningxiang pig-derived Enterococcus hirae HNAU0516 improves postweaning diarrhoea by promoting intestinal development, enhancing intestinal barrier function, decreasing intestinal permeability, modulating intestinal microbiota, and increasing short-chain fatty acids production.

Abstract
Osteoporosis (OP), which is characterized by a decrease in bone density and increased susceptibility to fractures, is closely linked to the gut microbiota (GM). It is increasingly realized that the GM plays a key role in the maintenance of the functioning of multiple organs, including bone, by producing bioactive metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). Consequently, imbalances in the GM, referred to as dysbiosis, have been identified with a significant reduction in beneficial metabolites, such as decreased SCFA associated with increased chronic inflammatory processes, including the activation of NF-κB at the epigenetic level, which is recognized as the main cause of many chronic diseases, including OP. Furthermore, regular or long-term medications such as antibiotics and many non-antibiotics such as proton pump inhibitors, chemotherapy, and NSAIDs, have been found to contribute to the development of dysbiosis, highlighting an urgent need for new treatment approaches. A promising preventive and adjuvant approach is to combat dysbiosis with natural polyphenols such as resveratrol, which have prebiotic functions and ensure an optimal microenvironment for beneficial GM. Resveratrol offers a range of benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, analgesic, and prebiotic effects. In particular, the GM has been shown to convert resveratrol, into highly metabolically active molecules with even more potent beneficial properties, supporting a synergistic polyphenol-GM axis. This review addresses the question of how the GM can enhance the effects of resveratrol and how resveratrol, as an epigenetic modulator, can promote the growth and diversity of beneficial GM, thus providing important insights for the prevention and co-treatment of OP.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol is a widespread feed contaminant that leads to vomit, which results in serious symptom such as increased intestinal permeability and even intestinal mucosal necrosis. Recent studies have reported the role of quercetin in alleviating deoxynivalenol-induced intestinal injury; however, the mechanisms and targets remain unclear. Thus, we aimed to identify the mechanisms of action by using a combination of network pharmacology and molecular docking. We identified 151 quercetin targets, 235 deoxynivalenol targets and 47 porcine intestinal injury targets by searching compound database and PubMed database, among which there were two common targets. The PPI network showed that the key proteins involved are NQO1 and PPAR-γ. The PPI network showed that the key proteins involved were NQO1 and PPARG. GO analysis found that genes were enriched primarily in response to oxidative stress. The PPI network showed that the key proteins involved are NQO1 and PPAR-γ. The genes are enriched primarily in response to oxidative stress. KEGG analysis showed enrichment of the HIF, reactive oxygen species and other signaling pathways. The molecular docking results indicated key binding activity between NQO1-quercetin and PPAR-γ-quercetin. By using network pharmacology, we have revealed the potential molecular mechanisms by which quercetin alleviates deoxynivalenol-induced porcine intestinal injury, which lays the foundation for the development of drugs to treat deoxynivalenol-induced intestinal injury in pigs.

Abstract
Natural products have been a long-standing source for exploring health-beneficial components from time immemorial. Modern science has had a renewed interest in natural-products-based drug discovery. The quest for new potential secondary metabolites or exploring enhanced activities for existing molecules remains a pertinent topic for research. Resveratrol belongs to the stilbenoid polyphenols group that encompasses two phenol rings linked by ethylene bonds. Several plant species and foods, including grape skin and seeds, are the primary source of this compound. Resveratrol is known to possess potent anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and immunoregulatory properties. Among the notable bioactivities associated with resveratrol, its pivotal role in safeguarding the intestinal barrier is highlighted for its capacity to prevent intestinal inflammation and regulate the gut microbiome. A better understanding of how oxidative stress can be controlled using resveratrol and its capability to protect the intestinal barrier from a gut microbiome perspective can shed more light on associated physiological conditions. Additionally, resveratrol exhibits antitumor activity, proving its potential for cancer treatment and prevention. Moreover, cardioprotective, vasorelaxant, phytoestrogenic, and neuroprotective benefits have also been reported. The pharmaceutical industry continues to encounter difficulties administering resveratrol owing to its inadequate bioavailability and poor solubility, which must be addressed simultaneously. This report summarizes the currently available literature unveiling the pharmacological effects of resveratrol.

Abstract
Increasing evidence indicates that maternal exposure to oxidized soybean oil (OSO) causes damage to the mother and offspring. The antioxidant resveratrol (Res) has a variety of health benefits. However, the protective effect of Res on mitigating offspring damage after maternal exposure to OSO and its mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of Res on hepatic fatty acid metabolism and the jejunal barrier in suckling piglets after maternal OSO exposure. A total of 18 sows in late gestation were randomly assigned to three treatments. The sows were fed with a fresh soybean oil (FSO) diet, an OSO diet, or the OSO diet supplemented with 300 mg/kg Res (OSO + Res), respectively. The results showed that maternal supplementation of Res restored the mRNA levels of genes related to fatty acid metabolism and increased the activities of catalase (CAT) and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) in suckling piglets' livers under the OSO challenge. Moreover, the OSO + Res group restored the mRNA levels of occludin and claudin 4 in suckling piglet jejunum compared with the results of the OSO challenges. In summary, supplementation with Res improves hepatic fatty acid metabolism and intestinal barrier function of suckling piglets after maternal OSO challenge during late gestation and lactation.

Abstract
Oxidative stress has been associated with a number of physiological problems in swine, including reduced production efficiency. Recently, although there has been increased research into regulatory mechanisms and antioxidant strategies in relation to oxidative stress-induced pig production, it remains so far largely unsuccessful to develop accurate models and nutritional strategies for specific oxidative stress factors. Here, we discuss the dose and dose intensity of the causes of oxidative stress involving physiological, environmental and dietary factors, recent research models and the antioxidant strategies to provide theoretical guidance for future oxidative stress research in swine.

Abstract
The foodborne mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) produced by Fusarium species threats animal and human health through disruption of the intestinal barrier. Targeting the gut microbiota and its products appears as a promising strategy to mitigate DON intestinal toxicity. In this study, we investigated whether the bacterial metabolite butyrate could alleviate epithelial barrier disruption induced by DON. We used a model of cell monolayers derived from porcine jejunum organoids allowing to reproduce the cellular complexity of the intestinal epithelium. Our results show that DON dose-dependently disrupted the epithelial barrier integrity, reduced epithelial differentiation, and altered innate immune defenses. Butyrate attenuated the DON-induced increase in paracellular permeability. Butyrate also prevented epithelial barrier dysfunction triggered by anisomycin, a ribosome inhibitor like DON. Moreover, butyrate partially counteracted the effects of DON on tight junctions (TJP1, OCLN), innate epithelial defenses (PTGS2, CD14, TLR4, TLR5), and absorptive cell functions (CA2, VIL1, NHE3, CFTR). In contrast, butyrate did not prevent the toxic effects of DON on mitochondrial metabolism, proliferation and goblet cell functions. Taken together, our results demonstrate that the bacterial metabolite butyrate is able to reduce DON-induced epithelial barrier disruption.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of the most prevalent mycotoxins in feed, which causes organ toxicity in animals. Therefore, reducing DON-induced organ toxicity can now be accomplished effectively using protective agents. This review provides an overview of multiple studies on a wide range of protective agents and their molecular mechanisms against DON organ toxicity. Protective agents include plant extracts, yeast products, bacteria, peptides, enzymes, H2, oligosaccharides, amino acids, adsorbents, vitamins and selenium. Among these, biological detoxification of DON using microorganisms to reduce the toxicity of DON without affecting the growth performance of pigs may be the most promising detoxification strategy. This paper also evaluates future developments related to DON detoxification and discusses the detoxification role and application potential of protective agents. This paper provides new perspectives for future research and development of safe and effective feed additives.

Abstract
SCOPE To investigate whether deoxynivalenol (DON) can induce intestinal damage through gut microbiota in mice. METHODS AND RESULTS Mice are orally administered DON (1 mg kg-1 bw day-1 ) for 4 weeks, and then recipient mice receive fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from DON-exposed mice after antibiotic treatment. Furthermore, the mice are orally treated with DON (1 mg kg-1 bw day-1 ) for 4 weeks after antibiotic treatment. Histological damage, disruption of tight junction protein expression, and increased oxidative stress and apoptosis in the colon as well as higher serum lipopolysaccharides are observed after DON exposure. Moreover, DON exposure changes the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota as well as the contents of fecal metabolites (mainly bile acids). Differential metabolic pathways may be related to mitochondrial metabolism, apoptosis, and inflammation following DON exposure. However, only a decrease in mRNA levels of occludin and claudin-3 is observed in the colon of recipient mice after FMT. After depleting the gut microbiota in mice, DON exposure can also cause histological damage, disorders of tight junction protein expression, and increased oxidative stress and apoptosis in the colon. CONCLUSIONS DON exposure can induce colon damage in mice independent of the gut microbiota.

Abstract
This study discusses the effects of resveratrol (RES) on the productive performance, immune function and intestinal barrier function of broiler chickens challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Two hundred and forty 1-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were randomly divided into 4 groups of 6 replicates each, with 10 broilers per replicate. This experiment used a 2 × 2 factorial design with dietary factors (basal diets or basal diets supplemented with 400 mg/kg RES were administered from d 1 to 21) and stress factors (intraperitoneal injection of 0.5 mg/kg BW of saline or LPS at 16, 18 and 20 d of age). The results showed that LPS challenge had a significant adverse effect on average daily gain (ADG) in broilers at 16 to 21 d of age (P < 0.05), whereas the addition of RES to the diet inhibited the LPS-induced decrease in ADG (P < 0.05). RES also alleviated LPS-induced immune function damage in broilers, which was manifested by the decrease of spleen index (P < 0.05) and the recovery of serum immunoglobulin M and ileal secretory immunoglobulin A content (P < 0.05). The LPS challenge also disrupts intestinal barrier function and inflammation, and RES mitigates these adverse effects in different ways. RES attenuated LPS-induced reduction of villus height in the jejunum and ileum of broilers (P < 0.05). LPS also caused an abnormal increase in plasma D-lactic acid levels in broilers (P < 0.05), which was effectively mitigated by RES (P < 0.05). LPS challenge resulted in a significant decrease in mRNA expression of occludin in the intestinal mucosa (P < 0.05), which was mitigated by the addition of RES (P < 0.05). RES significantly decreased the mRNA expression of toll-like receptor 4, nuclear factor kappa-B and tumor necrosis factor alpha in the ileum tissue stimulated by LPS (P < 0.05). Taken together, this study shows that RES exerts its beneficial effect on broilers challenged with LPS by alleviating immune function damage, relieving intestinal inflammation and barrier damage, and thus improving growth performance.

Abstract
Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a primary immunodeficiency characterized by low levels of serum immunoglobulins and increased susceptibility to infections, autoimmune disorders and cancer. CVID embraces a plethora of heterogeneous manifestations linked to complex immune dysregulation. While CVID is thought to be due to genetic defects, the exact cause of this immune disorder is unknown in the large majority of cases. Compelling evidences support a linkage between the gut microbiome and the CVID pathogenesis, therefore a potential for microbiome-based treatments to be a therapeutic pathway for this disorder. Here we discuss the potential of treating CVID patients by developing a gut microbiome-based personalized approach, including diet, prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation. We also highlight the need for a better understanding of microbiota-host interactions in CVID patients to prime the development of improved preventive strategies and specific therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Heat stress and growing demand for dairy products in tropical regions exert metabolic pressure on dairy cows, leading to metabolic diseases and economic losses. Resveratrol (RSV) is known for its numerous beneficial health effects and can be used as a barrier against metabolic abnormalities and prevent economic losses. Several studies have investigated the effects of RSV in humans and various animal species. In this review, we attempted to investigate the effects of RSV from different aspects so that we could have a practical proposal for its utilization in dairy cows. RSV was found to have potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, and antimicrobial effects, leading to improved reproductive performance. It is interesting that the effect of RSV on the microbial population leads to a significant decrease in methane emissions. However, high doses of RSV have been associated with possible adverse effects, underscoring the dose dependence of its efficacy. In conclusion, RSV polyphenol at optimal doses is a promising agent for the prevention and treatment of metabolic abnormalities in dairy cows, based on our literature review and study results.

Abstract
Early weaned piglets suffer from oxidative stress and enteral infection, which usually results in gut microbial dysbiosis, serve diarrhea, and even death. Rice bran oil (RBO), a polyphenol-enriched by-product of rice processing, has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties both in vivo and in vitro. Here, we ascertained the proper RBO supplementation level, and subsequently determined its effects on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intestinal dysfunction in weaned piglets. A total of 168 piglets were randomly allocated into four groups of seven replicates (42 piglets each group, (21±1) d of age, body weight (7.60±0.04) kg, and half males and half females) and were given basal diet (Ctrl) or basal diet supplemented with 0.01% (mass fraction) RBO (RBO1), 0.02% RBO (RBO2), or 0.03% RBO (RBO3) for 21 d. Then, seven piglets from the Ctrl and the RBO were treated with LPS (100 μg/kg body weight (BW)) as LPS group and RBO+LPS group, respectively. Meanwhile, seven piglets from the Ctrl were treated with the saline vehicle (Ctrl group). Four hours later, all treated piglets were sacrificed for taking samples of plasma, jejunum tissues, and feces. The results showed that 0.02% was the optimal dose of dietary RBO supplementation based on diarrhea, average daily gain, and average daily feed intake indices in early weaning piglets. Furthermore, RBO protected piglets against LPS-induced jejunal epithelium damage, which was indicated by the increases in villus height, villus height/crypt depth ratio, and Claudin-1 levels, as well as a decreased level of jejunal epithelium apoptosis. RBO also improved the antioxidant ability of LPS-challenged piglets, which was indicated by the elevated concentrations of catalase and superoxide dismutase, and increased total antioxidant capacity, as well as the decreased concentrations of diamine oxidase and malondialdehyde in plasma. Meanwhile, RBO improved the immune function of LPS-challenged weaned piglets, which was indicated by elevated immunoglobulin A (IgA), IgM, β-defensin-1, and lysozyme levels in the plasma. In addition, RBO supplementation improved the LPS challenge-induced dysbiosis of gut microbiota. Particularly, the indices of antioxidant capacity, intestinal damage, and immunity were significantly associated with the RBO-regulated gut microbiota. These findings suggested that 0.02% RBO is a suitable dose to protect against LPS-induced intestinal damage, oxidative stress, and jejunal microbiota dysbiosis in early weaned piglets.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) can affect health and growth performance of pigs, resulting in significant economic losses in swine production. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of glycyrrhizic acid combined with compound probiotics, i.e. Enterococcus faecalis plus Saccharomyces cerevisiae (GAP) on improving growth performance, intestinal health and its fecal microbiota composition change of piglets challenged with DON. A total of 160 42-day-old weaned piglets (Landrace × Large White) were used and the experimental period was 28 d. The results showed that supplementing GAP in the diet significantly improved the growth performance of piglets challenged with DON and alleviate DON-induced intestinal damage by reducing ALT, AST and LDH concentrations in serum, increasing the morphological parameters of jejunum, and decreasing DON residues in serum, liver and feces. Moreover, GAP could significantly decrease the expressions of inflammation and apoptosis genes and proteins (IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, COX-2, Bax, Bcl-2 and Caspase 3), and increase the expressions of tight-junction proteins and nutrient transport factor genes and proteins (ZO-1, Occludin, Claudin-1, ASCT2 and PePT1). In addition, it was also found that GAP supplementation could significantly increase the diversity of gut microbiota, maintain microbial flora balance and promote piglet growth by significantly increasing the abundance of beneficial bacterium such as Lactobacillus and reducing the abundance of harmful bacterium such as Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1. In conclusion, GAP addition to piglet diets contaminated with DON could significantly promote the health and growth performance of piglets though alleviating DON-induced hazards. This study provided a theoretical basis for the application of GAP to alleviate DON toxicity for animals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidized soybean oil (OSO) has been shown to impair growth and exacerbate inflammation, leading to intestinal barrier injury in animals. Recent evidence suggests important roles for resveratrol (RES) in the promoting growth performance, antioxidant capacity, anti-inflammatory, and regulate intestinal barriers in animals. Therefore, The objectives of this study are to investigate the effects of dietary RES (purity 98%) supplementation on the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, inflammatory state, and intestinal function of weaned piglets challenged with OSO. METHODS A total of 28 castrated weaned male piglets with a similar body weight of 10.19 ± 0.10 kg were randomly assigned to 4 dietary treatments for 28-d feeding trial with 7 replications per treatment and 1 piglet per replicate. Treatments were arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial with oil type [3% fresh soybean oil (FSO) vs. 3% OSO] and dietary RES (0 vs. 300 mg/kg). RESULTS The results showed that relative to the FSO group, OSO stress tended to decrease the average daily feed intake (ADFI), and decreased the activity levels of lipase, villus/crypt ratio (VCR), the mRNA expression of FABP1, SOD2, IL-10 and ZO-1 in the jejunum, and SOD2, GPX1, occludin and ZO-1 in the colon, the levels of acetic acid in the colonic digesta, whereas up-regulated the mRNA expression of IL-1β and TNF-α in the jejunum (P < 0.05). Moreover, dietary supplementation with RES increased ether extract (EE), the activity levels of sucrase, lipase, α-amylase, villus height (VH) and VCR, the mRNA expression of FABP1, SOD2, IL-10 and occludin in the jejunum, and FABP1, PPAR-γ, GPX1, occludin and ZO-1 in the colon, and the abundance of Firmicutes, acetic and propionic acid, but decreased the levels of D-lactic acid in the plasma, the abundance of Bacteroidetes in the colonic digesta of weaned piglets compared to the non-RES group (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, in the interaction effect analysis, relative to the OSO group, dietary RES supplementation in the diets supplemented with OSO increased the activity levels of trypsin, VH in the jejunum, the abundance of Actinobacteria, the levels of butyric acid of weaned piglets, but failed to influence the activity levels of trypsin and VH, Actinobacteria abundance, the levels of butyric acid when diets were supplemented with FSO (interaction, P < 0.05). Relative to the OSO group, dietary RES supplementation in the diets supplemented with OSO decreased the activity levels of DAO in the plasma of weaned piglets but failed to influence the activity levels of DAO when diets were supplemented with FSO (interaction, P < 0.05). Relative to the FSO group, dietary RES supplementation in the diets supplemented with FSO decreased the level of propionic acid, whereas RES supplementation failed to influence the level of propionic acid when the diet was supplemented with OSO (interaction, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Inclusion of OSO intensified inflammatory states and impaired the intestinal health characteristics of weaned piglets. Dietary RES supplementation improved the antioxidant capacity, anti-inflammatory activity, and intestinal morphology. Further studies showed that the protective effects of RES on gut health could be linked to the decreased abundance of Prevotella_1, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_6, and Prevotellaceae_UCG003 and increased levels of acetic and propionic acid.

Abstract
With the prohibition of antibiotics in feed, plant functional substances have been widely studied as feed additives. Resveratrol, a natural stilbene, and a non-flavonoid polyphenol found in plants, possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic regulatory features. Resveratrol generated intense scientific and public interest, primarily due to its widely reported ability to prevent cancer, delay aging and alleviate related metabolic diseases. Recently, resveratrol has been studied and applied as a feed additive in animal production. This review focuses on the outline of the absorption and metabolism and biological functions of resveratrol and summarizes the application of dietary resveratrol in animal production up to the present, including pigs, poultry, and ruminants. In pigs, dietary resveratrol improved intestinal health, mitochondrial function, meat quality, and more. In poultry, studies have shown that dietary resveratrol improves growth performance and meat and egg quality and alleviates heat stress induced adverse effects. There are few studies on dietary resveratrol in ruminants; however previous studies have indicated that dietary resveratrol increases nutrient digestibility and reduces methane emissions in sheep. It is hoped that this review could provide a specific theoretical basis and research ideas for the research and application of resveratrol.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for the body. Various organs of the body, including the intestine, are affected by its deficiency. Se deficiency can induce oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in the intestine. It can also increase intestinal permeability and decrease intestinal immune function in mammals. However, the detailed studies, conducted on the intestinal molecular mechanisms of Se deficiency-induced injury in poultry, are limited. This study explored the adverse effects of Se deficiency on intestinal permeability and its mechanism. A Se-deficient chicken model was established, and the morphological changes in the chicken duodenum tissues were observed using a light microscope and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Western blotting, qRT-PCR, and other methods were used to detect the expression levels of selenoproteins, oxidative stress indicators, inflammatory factors, tight junction (TJ) proteins, antimicrobial peptides, and other related indicators in intestinal tissues. The results showed that Se deficiency could decrease the expression levels of selenoproteins and antioxidant capacity, activate the nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) pathway, cause inflammation, and decrease the expression levels of TJ proteins and antimicrobial peptides in the duodenum tissues. The study also demonstrated that Se deficiency could increase intestinal permeability and decrease antimicrobial peptides via reactive oxygen species (ROS)/NF-κB. This study provided a theoretical basis for the scientific prevention and control of Se deficiency in poultry. Se deficiency decreased the expression levels of selenoproteins and increased ROS levels to activate the NF-κB pathway, resulting in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, reducing the expression levels of TJ protein, and weakening the expression of antimicrobial peptides, which contributed to the higher intestinal permeability. Oxidative stress weakened the expression of antimicrobial peptides.

Abstract
Resveratrol is a bioactive polyphenolic compound mainly present in grapes and red wine. It is known to exert beneficial effects in various experimental settings, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, and immunoregulatory. Accumulating evidence suggests these health benefits might be, at least partially, attributed to resveratrol's role in protecting the intestinal barrier, regulating the gut microbiome, and inhibiting intestinal inflammation. The purpose of this review is to examine the bioactivities of resveratrol in disease prevention and health promotion from the standpoint of regulating the gut microbiome. The article aims to provide additional insight into the potential applications of resveratrol in the food and nutraceutical industry.

Abstract
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is defined by atherosclerosis, which may result in stenosis or blockage of the arterial cavity, leading to ischemic cardiac diseases such as angina and myocardial infarction (MI). Accumulating evidence indicates that the gut microbiota play a critical role in the initiation and progression of CHD. The gut microbial metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is intimately linked to the pathophysiology of CHD. The hepatic flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs) convert trimethylamine (TMA) to TMAO. As a result, it is critical to prevent TMA generation. Stilbenes could reduce cardiovascular disease mortality. Twelve stilbenes with inhibitory activity against TMA-lyase were compiled and evaluated in this study. Docking results showed Resveratroloside had the highest Vina score, indicating that it was the most active and might be employed as a lead molecule for further structural modification.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by fungus. Due to their widespread distribution, difficulty in removal, and complicated subsequent harmful by-products, mycotoxins pose a threat to the health of humans and animals worldwide. Increasing studies in recent years have highlighted the impact of mycotoxins on the gut microbiota. Numerous researchers have sought to illustrate novel toxicological mechanisms of mycotoxins by examining alterations in the gut microbiota caused by mycotoxins. However, few efficient techniques have been found to ameliorate the toxicity of mycotoxins via microbial pathways in terms of animal husbandry, human health management, and the prognosis of mycotoxin poisoning. This review seeks to examine the crosstalk between five typical mycotoxins and gut microbes, summarize the functions of mycotoxins-induced alterations in gut microbes in toxicological processes and investigate the application prospects of microbes in mycotoxins prevention and therapy from a variety of perspectives. The work is intended to provide support for future research on the interaction between mycotoxins and gut microbes, and to advance the technology for preventing and controlling mycotoxins.

Abstract
The contamination of deoxynivalenol (DON) in feed is a global problem, which seriously threatens the productivity efficiency and welfare of farm animals and the food security of humans. Pig is the most sensitive species to DON, and is readily exposed to DON through its grain-enriched diet. The intestine serves as the first biological barrier to ingested mycotoxin, and is, therefore, the first target of DON. In the past decade, a growing amount of attention has been paid to plant-derived polyphenols as functional compounds against DON-induced oxidative stress and intestinal toxicity in pigs. In this review, we systematically updated the latest research progress in plant polyphenols detoxifying DON-induced intestinal toxicity in swine. We also discussed the potential underlying mechanism of action of polyphenols as Nrf2 activators in protecting against DON-induced enterotoxicity of swine. The output of this update points out an emerging research direction, as polyphenols have great potential to be developed as feed additives for swine to counteract DON-induced oxidative stress and intestinal toxicity.

Abstract
Intestinal oxidative stress triggers gut microbiota dysbiosis, which is involved in the etiology of post-weaning diarrhea and enteric infections. Ellagic acid (EA) can potentially serve as an antioxidant supplement to facilitate weaning transition by improving intestinal oxidative stress and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of dietary EA supplementation on the attenuation of intestinal damage, oxidative stress, and dysbiosis of gut microbiota in weanling piglets. A total of 126 piglets were randomly assigned into 3 groups and treated with a basal diet and 2 mL saline orally (Ctrl group), or the basal diet supplemented with 0.1% EA and 2 mL saline orally (EA group), or the basal diet and 2 mL fecal microbiota suspension from the EA group orally (FEA group), respectively, for 14 d. Compared with the Ctrl group, EA group improved growth performance by increasing average daily feed intake and average daily weight gain (P < 0.05) and decreasing fecal scores (P < 0.05). EA group also alleviated intestinal damage by increasing the tight junction protein occludin (P < 0.05), villus height, and villus height-to-crypt depth ratio (P < 0.05), while decreasing intestinal epithelial apoptosis (P < 0.05). Additionally, EA group enhanced the jejunum antioxidant capacity by increasing the total antioxidant capacity (P < 0.01), catalase (P < 0.05), and glutathione/oxidized glutathione (P < 0.05), but decreased the oxidative metabolite malondialdehyde (P < 0.05) compared to the Ctrl group. Compared with the Ctrl group, EA and FEA groups increased alpha diversity (P < 0.05), enriched beneficial bacteria (Ruminococcaceae and Clostridium ramosum), and increased metabolites short-chain fatty acids (P < 0.05). Correspondingly, FEA group gained effects comparable to those of EA group on growth performance, intestinal damage, and intestinal antioxidant capacity. In addition, the relative abundance of bacteria shifted in EA and FEA groups was significantly related to the examined indices (P < 0.05). Overall, dietary EA supplementation could improve growth performance and attenuate intestinal damage and oxidative stress by regulating the gut microbiota in weanling piglets.

Abstract
Catalase (CAT) can eliminate oxygen radicals, but it is unclear whether exogenous CAT can protect chickens against deoxynivalenol (DON)-induced oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate the effects of supplemental CAT on antioxidant property and gut microbiota in DON-exposed broilers. A total of 144 one-day-old Lingnan yellow-feathered male broilers were randomly divided into three groups (six replicates/group): control, DON group, and DON + CAT (DONC) group. The control and DON group received a diet without and with DON contamination, respectively, while the DONC group received a DON-contaminated diet with 200 U/kg CAT added. Parameter analysis was performed on d 21. The results showed that DON-induced liver enlargement (p < 0.05) was blocked by CAT addition, which also normalized the increases (p < 0.05) in hepatic oxidative metabolites contents and caspase-9 expression. Additionally, CAT addition increased (p < 0.05) the jejunal CAT and GSH-Px activities coupled with T-AOC in DON-exposed broilers, as well as the normalized DON-induced reductions (p < 0.05) of jejunal villus height (VH) and its ratio for crypt depth. There was a difference (p < 0.05) in gut microbiota among groups. The DON group was enriched (p < 0.05) with some harmful bacteria (e.g., Proteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Enterobacteriales, Enterobacteriaceae, and Escherichia/Shigella) that elicited negative correlations (p < 0.05) with jejunal CAT activity, and VH. DONC group was differentially enriched (p < 0.05) with certain beneficial bacteria (e.g., Acidobacteriota, Anaerofustis, and Anaerotruncus) that could benefit intestinal antioxidation and morphology. In conclusion, supplemental CAT alleviates DON-induced oxidative stress and intestinal damage in broilers, which can be associated with its ability to improve gut microbiota, aside from its direct oxygen radical-scavenging activity.

Abstract
Feed is the most expensive facet of commercial pork production. In order to reduce feed costs, using high-fiber ingredients has become a common practice. Moderate levels of fiber can maintain intestinal physiological function and promote intestinal health. Oxidative stress is linked to impaired nutrient absorption and growth performance. This study investigated the effects of high-fiber (5.26% crude fiber) and low-fiber (2.46% crude fiber) diets on growth performance and intestinal oxidative stress parameters in growing-finishing pigs. Forty growing pigs with initial body weight (27.07 ± 1.26 kg) were randomly assigned to 2 treatment groups with 10 replicates of 2 pigs per pen. Pigs were weighed on day 35, 42, and 70. The feed intake was recorded daily to calculate growth performance parameters. On day 70, eight pigs in each treatment group were randomly selected and euthanized to obtain jejunum to measure oxidative stress status. Pigs fed a high-fiber diet were heavier than those fed a low-fiber diet on days 35, 42, and 70 (P < 0.05). During the whole feeding period, pigs fed a high-fiber diet had a higher average daily gain than those fed a low-fiber diet (P < 0.05). The low-fiber diet resulted in increased levels of malondialdehyde (P < 0.05) in the jejunum, suggesting that the low-fiber diet contributed to oxidative stress in the jejunum. The low-fiber diet also led to a significant increase in glutathione and oxidized glutathione levels (P < 0.05) in the jejunum, indicating that pigs fed a low-fiber diet needed to produce more antioxidant substances to cope with oxidative stress in the intestine. This was accompanied by a significant increase in the expression of glutathione synthesizing enzymes in the jejunum of the low-fiber group (P < 0.05). These results suggest that the high-fiber diet can improve growth performance and maintain intestinal health in growing-finishing pigs by reducing intestinal oxidative stress.

Abstract
Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) phenotypic modulation regulates the initiation and progression of intracranial aneurysm (IA). Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is suggested to play neuroprotective roles in patients with craniocerebral injury. Therefore, we investigated the biological functions of DEX and its mechanisms against IA formation and progression in the current study. The rat primary VSMCs were isolated from Sprague-Dawley rats. IA and superficial temporal artery (STA) tissue samples were obtained from patients with IA. Flow cytometry was conducted to identify the characteristics of isolated VSMCs. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was used to mimic IA-like conditions in vitro. Cell viability was detected using CCK-8 assays. Wound healing and Transwell assays were performed to detect cell motility. ROS production was determined by immunofluorescence using DCFH-DA probes. Western blotting and RT-qPCR were carried out to measure gene expression levels. Inflammation responses were determined by measuring inflammatory cytokines. Immunohistochemistry staining was conducted to measure α2-adrenergic receptor levels in tissue samples. DEX alleviated the H2O2-induced cytotoxicity, attenuated the promoting effects of H2O2 on cell malignancy, and protected VSMCs against H2O2-induced oxidative damage and inflammation response. DEX regulated the GSK-3β/MKP-1/NRF2 pathway via the α2AR. DEX alleviates the inflammatory responses and oxidative damage of VSMCs by regulating the GSK-3β/MKP-1/NRF2 pathway via the α2AR in IA.

Abstract
Background Resveratrol has numerous beneficial properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. High summer temperatures in Southern China affect the reproductive performance of sows. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary resveratrol supplementation in different thermal environments on the reproductive performance, antioxidant capacity, immune function, and intestinal microbes of sows and piglets during late gestation and lactation, as well as their relationship with colostrum immunoglobulin. Methods A two-phase experiment was conducted with 40 healthy multiparous sows. In the first phase of the experiment, 20 sows were used in a moderate temperature environment, and in the second phase of the experiment, the remaining 20 sows were used in a high-temperature environment. In both phases, sows were fed either a control diet or a diet consists of control diet and 300 mg/kg resveratrol starting on day 75 of gestation. Plasma, milk, and fecal samples were collected to obtain the indices of antioxidant capacity, immune function, and intestinal microbes. Results The results showed that resveratrol supplementation increased the number of live births by 13.24 and 26.79% in the first and second phases, respectively, compared with the control group. In the second phase, resveratrol supplementation increased litter weight at weaning and in the concentrations of growth hormone (GH), insulin (INS), progesterone (PROG), triglycerides, and uric acid (UA). The plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD) level on day 110 of gestation and day 14 of lactation, as well as glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) on day 14 of lactation in the first phase, showed an increasing trend (p = 0.0728, p = 0.0932, and p = 0.067, respectively) in the resveratrol group, compared with the control group. On day 14 of lactation, the plasma total antioxidant capability (T-AOC) level was higher in the second phase, while the plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) level was lower in both phases in the resveratrol group. Resveratrol supplementation increased the abundance of immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin G (IgG), and immunoglobulin M (IgM) in colostrum and the relative abundance of Lactobacillus and Alloprevotella but decreased the relative abundance of Escherichia-shigella in piglet feces in the second phase. In addition, Spearman's correlation analysis indicated that the weight gain of weaned piglets was positively (p < 0.05) associated with IgM content in colostrum and the abundance of Lactobacillus in the fecal microbiota of piglets in the second phase. Moreover, the abundance of Alloprevotella was positively correlated with the contents of IgA and IgG in colostrum, while the abundance of Lactobacillus was positively correlated with IgM content. Conclusion These findings indicated that maternal resveratrol supplementation could enhance the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal health of piglets in a high temperature environment, which might be associated with increased immunoglobin secretion from colostrum.

Abstract
(1) Background: Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a general mycotoxin that induces severe intestinal barrier injury in humans and animals. Resveratrol (RES) efficiently exerts anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. However, the information regarding RES protecting against DON-induced oxidative stress and intestinal inflammation in piglets is limited. (2) Methods: A total of 64 weaned piglets (Duroc × (Landrace × Yorkshire), 21-d-old, barrow) were randomly allocated to four groups (eight replicate pens per group, each pen containing two piglets) for 28 d. The piglets were fed a control diet (CON) or the CON diet supplemented with 300 mg RES/kg diet (RES group), 3.8 mg DON/kg diet (DON) or both (DON+RES) in a 2 × 2 factorial design. (3) Compared with unsupplemented DON-challenged piglets, RES supplementation in DON-challenged piglets increased ileal villus height and the abundance of ileal SOD1, GCLC and PG1-5 transcripts and Muc2 protein (p < 0.05), while decreasing the mRNA and proteins expression of ileal IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in plasma and ileum in DON-challenged piglets (p < 0.05). Moreover, the abundances of class Bacilli, order Lactobacillales, family Lactobacillaceae and species Lactobacillus gasseri were increased in DON-challenged piglets fed a RES-supplemented diet compared with those in DON-challenged piglets(p ≤ 0.05). (4) Conclusions: our results indicated that RES supplementation in DON-challenged piglets efficiently attenuated intestinal inflammation and oxidative stress and improved gut microbiota, thereby alleviating DON-induced intestinal barrier injury.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RES) displays strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in protecting the animals from various stressors and inflammatory injuries, but its interrelationship with the gut microbiota remained largely unclear. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of dietary RES supplementation on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, intestinal immunity and gut microbiota in yellow-feathered broilers challenged by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). A total of 240 yellow-feathered broilers were randomly assigned to four treatment groups in a 2 × 2 factorial design. The broilers were fed with the control diet or control diet supplemented with 400 mg/kg RES, followed by challenge with LPS or the same amount of saline. Dietary RES supplementation significantly alleviated the decreases in the final body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), and ADFI induced by LPS (P < 0.05). LPS challenge significantly increased plasma concentrations of triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and cortisol levels, but decreased triiodothyronine (T3) and insulin levels (P < 0.05). Dietary supplementation with RES significantly reversed the elevated creatinine concentrations and the decreased concentrations of T3 and insulin caused by LPS (P < 0.05). Moreover, dietary RES supplementation significantly increased plasma total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and catalase (CAT) activities and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and T-AOC activities in jejunal mucosa and reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration in the plasma (P < 0.05). The reduction in the villus height to crypt depth ratio in duodenum, jejunum and ileum and the shortening of villus height in jejunum and ileum caused by LPS were also alleviated by RES treatment (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the increased concentrations of intestinal tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and IL-1β caused by LPS were significantly decreased by RES treatment (P < 0.05). Dietary RES treatment increased the mRNA expression of claudin-1, claudin-5, occludin, and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), and decreased mRNA expression of IL-1β, IL-8, IL-17, and TNF-α after LPS challenge (P < 0.05). Dietary RES treatments significantly decreased the dominance of cecal microbiota, and increased the Pieiou-e and Simpson index. Moreover, dietary RES supplementation increased relative abundance of UCG_ 009, Erysipelotrichaceae, Christensenellaceae_R-7_group, Anaerotruncus, RF39, and Ruminococcus while decreasing the abundance of Alistipes at genus level. Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the microbes at the order and genus levels significantly correlated with indicators of growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal health. Collectively, dietary supplementation with 400 mg/kg RES could improve growth performance and antioxidant capacity, and modulate intestinal immunity in yellow-feathered broilers challenged by LPS at early stage, which might be closely associated with the regulation of gut microbiota community composition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of the most common environmental pollutants that induces intestinal inflammation and microbiota dysbiosis. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) is a probiotic that not only has anti-inflammatory effects, but also shows protective effect on the intestinal barrier. However, it is still unknown whether LGG exerts beneficial effects against DON-induced intestinal damage in piglets. In this work, a total of 36 weaned piglets were randomized to one of four treatment groups for 21 d. The treatment groups were CON (basal diet); LGG (basal diet supplemented with 1.77 × 1011 CFU/kg LGG); DON (DON-contaminated diet) and LGG + DON (DON-contaminated diet supplemented with 1.77 × 1011 CFU/kg LGG). RESULT Supplementation of LGG can enhance growth performance of piglets exposed to DON by improving intestinal barrier function. LGG has a mitigating effect on intestinal inflammation induced by DON exposure, largely through repression of the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway. Furthermore, supplementation of LGG increased the relative abundances of beneficial bacteria (e.g., Collinsella, Lactobacillus, Ruminococcus_torques_group and Anaerofustis), and decreased the relative abundances of harmful bacteria (e.g., Parabacteroides and Ruminiclostridium_6), and also promoted the production of SCFAs. CONCLUSIONS LGG ameliorates DON-induced intestinal damage, which may provide theoretical support for the application of LGG to alleviate the adverse effects induced by DON exposure.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is the most common mycotoxin contaminant of cereal-based
food and animal feed. The toxicity of DON is very low compared to that of other
toxins; however, the most prominent signs of DON exposure include inappetence
and body weight loss, which causes considerable economic losses in the livestock
industry. This review summarizes critical studies on biological DON mycotoxin
mitigation strategies and the respective in vitro and
in vivo intestinal effects. Focus areas include growth
performance, gut health in terms of intestinal histomorphology, epithelial
barrier functions, the intestinal immune system and microflora, and short-chain
fatty acid production in the intestines. In addition, DON detoxification and
modulation of these parameters, through biological supplements, are discussed.
Biological detoxification of DON using microorganisms can attenuate DON toxicity
by modulating gut microbiota and improving gut health with or without
influencing the growth performance of pigs. However, the use of microorganisms
as feed additives to livestock for mycotoxins detoxification needs more research
before commercial use.

Abstract
This study found that resveratrol pretreatment attenuated porcine intestinal epithelial cell damage caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) K88 in vitro and the protective effects of resveratrol were associated with SIRT-1 signaling. ETEC K88 is a main intestinal pathogen for post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) in piglets. With the strict ban on antibiotics in animal feed, people are seeking effective antibiotic substitutes to protect the intestinal system against harmful pathogenic bacteria. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of resveratrol, a natural plant polyphenol, on ETEC K88-induced cellular damage in porcine enterocytes and underlying mechanisms. Intestinal porcine epithelial cell line 1 (IPEC-1) cells, pretreated with or without resveratrol (30 μM, 4 h), were challenged with ETEC K88 (MOI = 1 : 10) for 3 h. The results showed that ETEC K88 infection induced severe damage and dysfunction in IPEC-1 cells, as evidenced by a reduced cell viability, decreased tight junctions, mitochondrial dysfunction, and autophagy. It is noteworthy that IPEC-1 cells pre-treated with resveratrol improved their capacity for resistance to most of these abnormal phenotypes caused by ETEC K88 infection. Furthermore, we found that the activation of SIRT-1 signaling was associated with the benefits of resveratrol, as demonstrated by EX-527, an inhibitor of SIRT-1, which reversed most of the protective effects of resveratrol. In conclusion, these results indicated that resveratrol could protect intestinal epithelial cells against ETEC K88 infection by activating SIRT-1 signaling. These findings provide new insights into the role of resveratrol in maintaining intestinal physiological functions.
