Abstract
BACKGROUND Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection can have a serious course with many complications, especially in immunocompromised individuals. In such persons, other latent virus infections may contribute to disease pathology, in particular viruses which infect immune cells such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV). METHODS In this study, serology-based assays were conducted to analyse antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (SP), EBV Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen (EBNA)-1 and CMV phosphoprotein (pp)52 in naturally SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals, non-infected healthy controls (HCs) and vaccinated healthy controls (VHCs) to identify an association between SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and EBV and CMV antibodies in order to determine whether latent EBV and CMV infected individuals are more prone to become infected with SARS-CoV-2. Moreover, SARS-CoV-2, EBV, and CMV antibody responses were characterized in serum from patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), a chronic inflammatory disease strongly associated with EBV infections, to determine whether the serologic virus antibody profile varies in immunocompromised RRMS individuals upon SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations compared to VHCs. RESULTS Significantly elevated SP IgG, IgM and IgA levels were identified in SARS-CoV-2-infected immunocompetent individuals when compared to non-infected HCs. However, no correlation was found to serum antibodies between SARS-CoV-2, EBV, and CMV in individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 and in VHCs, suggesting that latent infections with neither EBV nor CMV associates to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Moreover, no significant difference in SP IgG, IgA and IgM levels was observed between vaccinated RRMS patients and VHCs, indicating that the immune system of immune deficient RRMS patients and VHCs respond identical to SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations. CONCLUSION Collectively, SARS-CoV-2 SP antibody levels reflect the vaccination and infection history and do not associate with EBV and CMV serostatus.

Abstract
Viral infections have been a severe challenge for global public health, and viral pneumonia is becoming increasingly critical in the post-pandemic era. Observational and basic studies have demonstrated a strong link between host nutrient status and anti-viral immune responses, and nutritional supplements were shown to improve the prognosis of viral infectious diseases. However, there is limited research on the relationship between essential micronutrients and the susceptibility to viral pneumonia. In addition, current studies are often confounded by biases and reverse causality, undermining their reliability. In this study, to fill the gap, we employed Mendelian randomization to investigate the causal relationship between supplementation of vitamins and minerals and the susceptibility to viral pneumonia. Our analysis found that vitamin B6 is a protective factor against viral pneumonia, while selenium supplementation is a risk factor. These findings provide insights for the use of dietary supplements and the prevention and control of viral pneumonia, especially when micronutrient supplementation is used as an adjunctive therapy for viral infections.

Abstract
The role of vitamin D in the susceptibility to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) disease has been investigated since the beginning of the pandemic, but there is still scarce data on children. We investigated the impact of vitamin D status and the related genetic variants on COVID-19 vulnerability and severity of the disease in children. A systematic review was performed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, to identify reports on vitamin D status and genetic polymorphisms, their association with the susceptibility of children to COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), and the effect of supplementation on the clinical course. Of an initial total of 279 articles, 26 studies, published between September 2020 and May 2023, were finally included in this review according to inclusion criteria. Quantitative data provided by 11 studies revealed that 43.05% of pediatric COVID-19 patients had low vitamin D levels. Mean serum 25(OH)D levels were observed to be significantly low in COVID-19 cases, with an estimated pooled mean value of 17 ng/mL, as provided by 16 studies. Vitamin D deficiency and the vitamin D receptor (VDR) FokI polymorphism may suggest independent risk factors for susceptibility to COVID-19 in the pediatric population. The 25(OH)D level may constitute a significant biomarker associated with the COVID-19 severity and MIS-C. While supplementation of COVID-19 cases with vitamin D showed favorable results, the effect on the outcome of the disease remains uncertain.
