Abstract
BACKGROUND Regular walking has been reported to improve metabolically-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) by altering the metabolic environment. However, no studies to date have focused on older individuals in both conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of a 12-week walking intervention on metabolic syndrome risk factors, liver function indicators, and liver ultrasound findings in older adults with both metabolic syndrome and MASLD. METHODS A total of 66 participants aged 65-85 years had average ages, heights, and weights of 75.3 ± 5.8 years, 159.3 ± 9.3 cm, and 68.6 ± 6.8 kg, respectively. The participants resided in four senior living communities, and their diets were uniform. The participants from two facilities were assigned to the control group (CON, n = 33), whereas those from the other two facilities were allocated to the treadmill walking program group (WPG, n = 33). Each group comprised 13 males and 20 females. The intervention consisted of a low- to moderate-intensity walking program, conducted for 30 min per day, 6 days per week, totaling 180 min per week. The total daily calorie expenditure was recorded based on the values calculated from the treadmill. The walking intensity was adjusted by modifying the treadmill incline according to each participant's heart rate corresponding to their maximal oxygen consumption (VO₂max). The exercise intensity was set at 50% on Mondays and Fridays, 60% on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 70% on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Sundays were designated as rest days. RESULTS Although there were no significant differences in caloric intake between the groups, the WPG exhibited a 52.5% increase in physical activity levels (p < 0.001), resulting in significant reductions in body weight (-10.2%), fat mass (-17.2%), and abdominal fat (-4.8%). The WPG showed a 16.1% increase in VO₂max, along with significant reductions in systolic blood pressure (-9.6%) and blood glucose (-16.9%), as well as notable improvements in lipid profiles (p < 0.001). The WPG also demonstrated significant reductions in aspartate aminotransferase (-40%), alanine aminotransferase (-23.5%), total protein (-14.4%), albumin (-8.1%), bilirubin (-17.6%), and liver ultrasound scores (-31.8%), with all changes showing significant intergroup differences (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Along with a consistent diet, a 12-week walk has been shown to induce significant changes in the body composition and cardiometabolic factors of older adults, as well as notable improvements in liver function markers and imaging findings. Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a clinical prediction model for diagnosing Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) based on indicators associated with its occurrence. Patients and Methods This study included a total of 26,637 individuals who underwent health examinations at the Jiaxing First Hospital Health Examination Center from January 19, 2022, to December 31, 2022. They were randomly divided into training (n = 18645) and validation (n = 7992) sets in a 7:3 ratio. Firstly, the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression algorithm was employed for variable selection. Subsequently, a multifactor Logistic regression analysis was conducted to establish the predictive model, accompanied by nomograms. Thirdly, model validation was performed using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves, Harrell's concordance index (C-index), calibration plots, and Decision Curve Analysis (DCA), followed by internal validation. Results In this study, six predictive indicators were selected, including Body Mass Index, Triglycerides, Blood Pressure, High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, and Fasting Blood Glucose. The model demonstrated excellent predictive performance, with an AUC of 0.978 (0.976-0.980) for the training set and 0.977 (0.974-0.980) for the validation set in the nomogram. Calibration curves indicated that the model possessed good calibration ability (Training set: Emax 0.081, Eavg 0.005, P = 0.580; Validation set: Emax 0.062, Eavg 0.007, P = 0.829). Furthermore, decision curve analysis suggested that applying the nomogram for diagnosis is more beneficial when the threshold probability of MetS is less than 89%, compared to either treating-all or treating-none at all. Conclusion We developed and validated a nomogram based on MetS risk factors, which can effectively predict the occurrence of MetS. The proposed nomogram demonstrates significant discriminative ability and clinical applicability. It can be utilized to identify variables and risk factors for diagnosing MetS at an early stage.

Abstract
Dictyophora indusiata is a common edible mushroom with great potential in the field of medicine against metabolic disorders, inflammation, and immunodeficiency. Our previous studies have shown that different fractions of the polysaccharide from Dictyophora indusiata (DIP) have various structural characteristics and morphology. However, the impact of the structural features on the protective effects of DIP against metabolic syndrome remains unclear. In this study, three distinct polysaccharide fractions have been extracted from Dictyophora indusiata and a high-fat diet-induced metabolic syndrome (MetS) was constructed in mice. The effects of these fractions on a range of MetS-associated endpoints, including abnormal blood glucose, lipid profiles, body fat content, liver function, intestinal microbiota and their metabolites were investigated. Through correlation analysis, the potential link between the monosaccharide composition of the polysaccharides and their biological activities was determined. The study aimed to explore the potential mechanisms and ameliorative effects of these polysaccharide fractions on MetS, thereby providing statistical evidence for understanding the relationship between monosaccharides composition of Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharides and their potential utility in treating metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Background Greenness exposure is beneficial to human health, but its potential mechanisms through which the risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS) could be reduced have been poorly studied. We aimed to estimate the greenness-MetS association in southeast China and investigate the independent and joint mediation effects of physical activity (PA), body mass index (BMI), and air pollutants on the association. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among the 38,288 adults based on the Fujian Behavior and Disease Surveillance (FBDS), established in 2018. MetS was defined as the presence of three or more of the five components: abdominal obesity, elevated triglyceride, reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), high blood pressure, and elevated fasting glucose. The residential greenness exposure was measured as the 3-year mean values of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) within the 250, 500, and 1,000 meters (m) buffer zones around the residential address of each participant. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the greenness-MetS association. The causal mediation analysis was used to estimate the independent and joint mediation effects of PA, BMI, particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm (PM2.5), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). Results Each interquartile range (IQR) increase in greenness was associated with a decrease of 13% (OR = 0.87 [95%CI: 0.83, 0.92] for NDVI500m and OR = 0.87 [95%CI: 0.82, 0.91] for EVI500m) in MetS risk after adjusting for covariates. This association was stronger in those aged < 60 years (e.g., OR = 0.86 [95%CI: 0.81, 0.92] for NDVI500m), males (e.g., OR = 0.73 [95%CI: 0.67, 0.80] for NDVI500m), having an educational level of primary school or above (OR = 0.81 [95%CI: 0.74, 0.89] for NDVI500m), married/cohabitation (OR = 0.86 [95%CI: 0.81, 0.91] for NDVI500m), businessman (OR = 0.82 [95%CI: 0.68, 0.99] for NDVI500m), other laborers (OR = 0.77 [95%CI: 0.68, 0.88] for NDVI500m), and non-smokers (OR = 0.77 [95%CI: 0.70, 0.85] for NDVI500m). The joint effect of all six mediators mediated about 48.1% and 44.6% of the total effect of NDVI500m and EVI500m on the MetS risk, respectively. Among them, BMI showed the strongest independent mediation effect (25.0% for NDVI500m), followed by NO2 and PM10. Conclusion Exposure to residential greenness was associated with a decreased risk for MetS. PA, BMI, and the four air pollutants jointly interpreted nearly half of the mediation effects on the greenness-MetS association.

Abstract
Background Detecting the early onset of metabolic syndrome (MetS) allows for quick intervention which may slow progression to a variety of health consequences, hence, determining the best measurement to detect MetS is essential. Aim This research aimed at examining the MetS predictive power of anthropometric indices, such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), percentage body fat (%BF), conicity index (CI), and Clínica Universidad de Navarra-body adiposity estimator (CUN-BAE) to determine the cut-off points to identify male South African taxi drivers with MetS. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted among 185 male taxi drivers. Their weight, height, WC, blood lipid profile were measured. International Diabetes Federation (IDF) definition was used to define MetS. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were used to compare the predictive ability of Anthropometric indices to detect MetS. Results The mean age of the participants was 39.84 years. Overall, 41.6% (N = 77) of the participants presented with MetS. The mean values for BMI, WC, WHtR, %BF, BRI, CUN-BAE, ABSI and CI were 28.60 ± 6.20 kg/m2, 99.13 ± 17.59 cm, 0.58 ± 0.10, 27.28 ± 8.28%, 5.09 ± 2.33, 27.78 ± 8.34, 0.08 ± 0.01 and 1.70 ± 0.19, respectively. The mean values for these indices were significantly (p < 0.001) higher in participants with MetS. The highest area under the curve (AUC) outcomes for screening MetS were for the %BF and CUN-BAE, followed by the BMI and WHtR, and lastly the BRI. All these anthropometric indices had outstanding discriminatory powers for predicting MetS with AUCs and sensitivity values above 80%. The BMI, WHtR, %BF, BRI, and CUN-BAE, had cut-off points for detection of metS in South African men at 28.25 kg/m2, 0.55, 25.29%, 4.55, and 27.10, respectively. Based on the logistic regression models abnormal BMI, WHtR, %BF, BRI, CUN-BAE, TG, FBG, systolic BP, diastolic BP and WC showed increased risk of MetS. Conclusion While the %BF, CUN-BAE, BMI, WC, WHtR, BRI, CI and CUN-BAE could predict MetS among South African male taxi drivers, these indices were less effective in predicting the individual MetS risk factors such as TG, BP, and FBG.
