Soil depth exerts greater effect on bacterial community than spatial structure in Longmenshan fault zone

The diversity patterns and drivers of soil microbial communities across spatial distances have been extensively investigated over the recent years. However, whether microbial communities in surface and subsurface soils showed an identical spatial distribution pattern at a small regional scale has not been fully confirmed. For this, we investigated the linkage between soil water content (SWC), pH as well as nutrient contents and soil bacterial diversity and communities in different soil layers in the Longmenshan fault zone in Sichuan Province, China. Our investigation indicated that surface soil bacterial communities were positively correlated with SWC and pH (P < 0.05), whereas those in the subsurface correlated with soil organic carbon and its fractions (P < 0.05). Bacterial community co-occurrence network structures differed significantly across soil layers. Compared to subsurface soils, surface soils had more nodes, larger network diameters, and longer average paths. The keystone species belonged to Rokubacteriales in the surface, and in the subsurface soil, they belonged to Chryseobacterium, while no keystone species were found in the subsoil. Spatial distance showed a smaller effect (4%-7%) on community structure, indicating that various soil factors represent key regulatory factors for bacterial community shifts. Collectively, soil depth showed a considerably higher effect than spatial distance on soil bacterial community composition and network properties in Longmenshan fault zone, with key species differing across soil layers. These results could provide an essential basis for further investigation of microbial functions in soil ecosystem heterogeneity and maintaining soil health.

IMPORTANCE

Soil water content served as the main driver of changes in surface soil bacterial diversity and community. Spatial structure had a greater influence on surface soil bacterial communities and diversity. Soil depth had a significantly higher effect on soil bacterial community composition and network properties than site. Our results may provide insights into the impact of microbial functions on biodiversity and ecosystem service functions.

Soil carbon in the world's tidal marshes

Tidal marshes are threatened coastal ecosystems known for their capacity to store large amounts of carbon in their water-logged soils. Accurate quantification and mapping of global tidal marshes soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is of considerable value to conservation efforts. Here, we used training data from 3710 unique locations, landscape-level environmental drivers and a global tidal marsh extent map to produce a global, spatially explicit map of SOC storage in tidal marshes at 30 m resolution. Here we show the total global SOC stock to 1 m to be 1.44 Pg C, with a third of this value stored in the United States of America. On average, SOC in tidal marshes' 0-30 and 30-100 cm soil layers are estimated at 83.1 Mg C ha-1 (average predicted error 44.8 Mg C ha-1) and 185.3 Mg C ha-1 (average predicted error 105.7 Mg C ha-1), respectively.

Global dataset of soil organic carbon in tidal marshes

Tidal marshes store large amounts of organic carbon in their soils. Field data quantifying soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks provide an important resource for researchers, natural resource managers, and policy-makers working towards the protection, restoration, and valuation of these ecosystems. We collated a global dataset of tidal marsh soil organic carbon (MarSOC) from 99 studies that includes location, soil depth, site name, dry bulk density, SOC, and/or soil organic matter (SOM). The MarSOC dataset includes 17,454 data points from 2,329 unique locations, and 29 countries. We generated a general transfer function for the conversion of SOM to SOC. Using this data we estimated a median (± median absolute deviation) value of 79.2 ± 38.1 Mg SOC ha-1 in the top 30 cm and 231 ± 134 Mg SOC ha-1 in the top 1 m of tidal marsh soils globally. This data can serve as a basis for future work, and may contribute to incorporation of tidal marsh ecosystems into climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and policies.

Effects of Vegetation Types and Soil Properties on Regional Soil Carbon and Nitrogen in Salinized Reservoir Wetland, Northeast China

This study investigated the spatial variability in soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC), soil microbial biomass nitrogen (SMBN) and their possible relationships with other soil properties in the Hongqipao reservoir, which is dominated by different vegetation types. The results showed that there were high spatial variabilities in SOC, TN, SMBC and SMBN, and that the SOC, TN, SMBC and SMBN contents decreased with increasing soil depth in the Hongqipao reservoir. The SOC was significantly positively correlated with TN, SMBC, moisture content (MC) and negatively correlated with carbon to nitrogen ratio (C:N ratio) and bulk density (BD). Soil TN was significantly positively correlated with SMBC, SMBN, MC and negatively correlated with the C:N ratio, BD and pH. The SMBC was significantly positively correlated with SMBN, MC and negatively correlated with the C:N ratio, BD and pH. The SMBN was significantly negatively correlated with the C:N ratio and BD. All of the measures of soil properties in this study could explain the higher significant variability in the response variables (SOC, TN, SMBC and SMBN contents). The generalized additive model (GAM) showed that SOC and TN had different influencing factors in different soil depths. The structural equation model (SEM) showed that vegetation types had a significantly positive effect on TN and SMBN, and the soil depths had a significantly positive effect on SOC and a significantly negative effect on TN and SMBC. This study further suggests that vegetation types play a major role in determining the spatial characteristics of soil carbon and nitrogen, and any changes in the vegetation types in the reservoir may influence the distributions of soil carbon and nitrogen. This may affect the global carbon and nitrogen budgets and the atmospheric greenhouse gas concentration significantly.

Modelling Aboveground Biomass Carbon Stock of the Bohai Rim Coastal Wetlands by Integrating Remote Sensing, Terrain, and Climate Data

Remotely sensed vegetation indices (VIs) have been widely used to estimate the aboveground biomass (AGB) carbon stock of coastal wetlands by establishing Vis-related linear models. However, these models always have high uncertainties due to the large spatial variation and fragmentation of coastal wetlands. In this paper, an efficient coastal wetland AGB model for the Bohami Rim coastal wetlands was presented based on multiple data sets. The model was developed statistically with 7 independent variables from 23 metrics derived from remote sensing, topography, and climate data. Compared to previous models, it had better performance, with a root mean square error and r value of 188.32 g m−2 and 0.74, respectively. Using the model, we firstly generated a regional coastal wetland AGB map with a 10 m spatial resolution. Based on the AGB map, the AGB carbon stock of the Bohai Rim coastal wetland was 2.11 Tg C in 2019. The study demonstrated that integrating emerging high spatial resolution multi-remote sensing data and several auxiliary metrics can effectively improve VIs-based coastal wetland AGB models. Such models with emerging freely available data sets will allow for the rapid monitoring and better understanding of the special role that “blue carbon” plays in global carbon cycle.

Factors controlling organic carbon distributions in a riverine wetland

As a significant reservoir of organic carbon (OC), natural wetlands play an important role in mitigating greenhouse effects. To determine what factors might influence OC, we analyzed the distributions of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), light fraction organic carbon (LFOC), and heavy fraction organic carbon (HFOC) in sediments taken from the Yanghe River Wetland (YRW) and assessed the effects of several environmental variables on the distribution of the different carbon types. The microbial community abundances and compositions of the sampled sediments were analyzed by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to reveal the environmental factors that affect the distribution of OC. The DOC and LFOC contents varied significantly in the research area, while HFOC content showed no variation. The DOC content was significantly affected by sediment pH, vegetation height, and microbial abundances, and the LFOC content was significantly affected by water pH. We also proposed a novel indicator to study the microbial effect on the distribution of OC content in wetlands: weighted abundance of related microbes (WARM). This study identifies the environmental factors that could affect the distribution of OC in a riverine wetland and outlines the calculation of a novel indicator.
