Abstract
BACKGROUND Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a common chronic inflammatory disorder in children, leading to significant physical and psychosocial challenges. Current treatments often fall short, prompting interest in complementary therapies. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of electroacupuncture (EA) on clinical outcomes in children with JIA, focusing on its impact on the pyroptosis pathway and autophagy function. METHODS A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted from 7 November 2023 to 12 January 2025. A total of 106 participants were recruited and randomly assigned to receive EA or sham acupuncture (SA) for 8 weeks. Clinical assessments, including functional ability, pain scores, and quality of life, were measured at baseline, week 4, week 8, month 3, and month 6. Serum levels of pyroptosis-related proteins and autophagy markers were analyzed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. RESULTS The EA group showed significant improvements in functional ability and pain scores compared to the SA group at both week 4 and week 8. Notable reductions in serum levels of pyroptosis markers (caspase-1, GSDMD, NLRP3) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-18) were observed in the EA group. Additionally, autophagy markers (LC3, Becline1) significantly decreased after EA treatment, suggesting enhanced autophagic activity. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that electroacupuncture is a safe and effective adjunctive treatment for improving function and reducing pain in children with JIA. The observed biological changes indicate potential anti-inflammatory effects, supporting EA's role in comprehensive JIA management. Future research should explore long-term outcomes and mechanisms for these findings further. Abstract
Inflammation and depression are serious complications of diabetes that interact to form a feedback loop and may hinder diabetic wound healing. They share a common pathophysiological basis of abnormal interactions between diabetic wounds and the brain. Here, we propose a strategy combining electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation of the Dazhui acupoint (GV14) with polyphenol-mediated conductive hydrogel microneedles to promote diabetic wound healing and alleviate depression through local wound-brain interactions. The conductive microneedles comprised methacrylated gelatin, dopamine (DA), DA-modified poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), and Lycium barbarum polysaccharide. EA at GV14 activated the vagus-adrenal axis to inhibit systemic inflammation while DA coupled electrical signals for long-term inhibition of local wound inflammation. EA at GV14 was also found to elevate 5-hydroxytryptamine levels in rats with diabetic wounds, consequently mitigating depressive-like behaviors. Additionally, the polyphenol-mediated conductive hydrogel microneedles, and coupled with EA stimulation promoted healing of wound tissue and peripheral nerves. This strategy regulated both local and systemic inflammation while alleviating depressive-like behaviors in diabetic rats, providing a new clinical perspective for the treatment of diabetes-related and emotional disorders.

Abstract
The journey of bone repair is a lengthy process. Traditionally, oral or topical medications have been employed to facilitate healing, approaches that are not only costly but may also lead to adverse effects such as gastrointestinal damage. With advancements in electrophysiology, the significance of bioelectric activity in tissue repair has become increasingly prominent, thereby enhancing the focus on research into electroacupuncture (EA) for bone repair. EA, a synthesis of traditional acupuncture and electrical stimulation, can regulate pain by inhibiting the transmission of electrical signals, reducing the expression of ion channel proteins, and promoting the release of neurotransmitters at targeted sites. Moreover, EA has the capability to influence macrophage polarization and modulate inflammatory cytokines, aiding in bone repair. Additionally, EA has the potential to regulate cytokines such as Ephrin type-B receptor 4 (EphB4), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Erythropoietin (EPO), and Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2 (BMP-2), thus promoting angiogenesis and fracture healing.This paper explores the mechanisms by which EA facilitates bone healing and assesses its advantages and limitations in clinical applications. It offers a theoretical foundation for the safe, effective, and rational use of EA, presenting a novel approach for enhancing bone regeneration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of frequency specific intramuscular electrical stimulation on post trigger point dry needling soreness. BACKGROUND Dry needling (DN) with intramuscular electrical stimulation (DN/IMES) has been shown to be effective in reducing post needling soreness. The effect of frequency specific intramuscular electrical stimulation on post needling soreness has not been studied abundantly, but initial results are favorable. This study investigated the effect of frequency specific intramuscular electrical stimulation on post needling soreness. METHODS A convenience sample of 45 (α = 0.05, power = 95%) subjects was recruited for this study and randomly assigned to DN (n = 15), DN/IMES [f-2Hz] (n = 15) and DN/IMES [f-100Hz] (n = 15) groups. Pain Pressure Threshold (PPT) and Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) were measured before and 24 hours after the intervention. RESULT Both DN/IMES [f-2Hz and 100 Hz] groups showed statistically significant improvement in NPRS (p = 0.001 and 0.00005, respectively) and PPT (p = 0.004 and 0.0002, respectively). No statistically significant changes were observed in DN group in NPRS (p = 0.726) and PPT (p = 0.238). CONCLUSION Both dry needling with Intramuscular electrical stimulation (DN/IMES [f-2Hz and 100Hz]) groups demonstrated statistically significant improvement in soreness as compared to DN group, but DN/IMES [f-100 Hz] group showed more significant improvement as compared to DN/IMES [f-2 Hz] group in reducing post needling soreness.

Abstract
Introduction: Electroacupuncture (EA) has been applied in dysmenorrhea and has shown good efficacy. The mechanisms of EA are associated with autonomic nervous system adjustments and neuroendocrine regulation. Laser acupuncture (LA), however, has been widely investigated for its noninvasiveness. However, it remains uncertain whether LA is as effective as EA. This study aimed to compare EA and LA head to head in dysmenorrhea. Methods: A crossover, randomized clinical trial was conducted. EA or LA was applied to selected acupuncture points. Participants were randomized into two sequence treatment groups who received either EA or LA twice per week in luteal phase for 3 months followed by 2-month washout, then shifted to other groups (sequence 1: EA > LA; sequence 2: LA > EA). Outcome measures were heart rate variability (HRV), prostaglandins (PGs), pain, and quality-of-life (QoL) assessment (QoL-SF12). We also compared the effect of EA and LA in low and high LF/HF (low frequency/high frequency) status. Results: Totally, 43 participants completed all treatments. Both EA and LA significantly improved HRV activity and were effective in reducing pain (Visual Analog Scale [VAS]; EA: p < 0.001 and LA: p = 0.010) and improving QoL (SF12: EA: p < 0.001, LA, p = 0.017); although without intergroup difference. EA reduced PGs significantly (p < 0.001; δ p = 0.068). In low LF/HF, EA had stronger effects than LA in increasing parasympathetic tone in respect of percentage of successive RR intervals that differ by more than 50 ms (pNN50; p = 0.053) and very low-frequency band (VLF; p = 0.035). Conclusion: There is no significant difference between EA and LA in improving autonomic nervous system dysfunction, pain, and QoL in dysmenorrhea. EA is prominent in PGs changing and preserving vagus tone in low LF/HF; yet LA is noninvasive for those who have needle phobia. Whether LA is equivalent with EA and the mechanism warrants further study. Clinical trial identification number: NCT04178226.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The induction of intestinal inflammation as a result of abdominal surgery is an essential factor in postoperative ileus (POI) development. Electroacupuncture (EA) at ST36 has been demonstrated to relieve intestinal inflammation and restore gastrointestinal dysmotility in POI. This study aims to elucidate the neuroimmune pathway involved in the anti-inflammatory properties of EA in POI. METHODS After intestinal manipulation (IM) was performed to induce POI, intestinal inflammation and motility were assessed 24 h post-IM, by evaluating gastrointestinal transit (GIT), cytokines expression, and leukocyte infiltration. Experimental surgery, pharmacological intervention, and genetic knockout mice were used to elucidate the neuroimmune mechanisms of EA. RESULTS EA at ST36 significantly improved GIT and reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and leukocyte infiltration in the intestinal muscularis following IM in mice. The anti-inflammatory effectiveness of EA treatment was abolished by sub-diaphragmatic vagotomy, whereas splenectomy did not hinder the anti-inflammatory benefits of EA treatment. The hexamethonium chloride (HEX) administration contributes to a notable reduction in the EA capacity to suppress inflammation and enhance motility dysfunction, and EA is ineffective in α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) knockout mice. CONCLUSIONS EA at ST36 prevents intestinal inflammation and dysmotility through a neural circuit that requires vagal innervation but is independent of the spleen. Further findings revealed that the process involves enteric neurons mediating the vagal signal and requires the presence of α7nAChR. These findings suggest that utilizing EA at ST36 may represent a possible therapeutic approach for POI and other immune-related gastrointestinal diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand research advances and frontiers of acupuncture regulation on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) over the past decade through a bibliometric analysis. METHODS Publications related to acupuncture regulation on the ANS were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. CiteSpace software was used to analyze the datasets and generate knowledge maps. RESULTS A total of 445 relevant publications published between 2013 and 2022 were included in this bibliometric analysis. The number of annual publications fluctuated from 2013 to 2016 but increased gradually from 2016 to 2022. China produced the highest number of publications, while the USA established the most extensive cooperation relationships. China Academy of Chinese Medical Science was the most productive institution. Chen Jiande D.Z. was the most prolific author and Rong Peijing holds the most extensive cooperation network. Han Jisheng was the most co-cited author. Relevant research involved mechanism exploration and clinical efficacy research, and "anti-inflammatory effect" was the most active research topic, especially cholinergic anti-inflammatory mechanisms. The most cited references mainly focused on inflammation. Gastrointestinal and cardiovascular disorders were the most active medical conditions studied in this field. CONCLUSIONS Research related to acupuncture regulation on the ANS mainly focused on anti-inflammation, and regulating gastrointestinal and cardiovascular function over the past decade. However, the mechanisms of the autonomic effects of acupuncture need further investigation. High-quality clinical studies are required to determine the optimal parameters of acupuncture for clinical application.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Herein, we investigated whether mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) transplantation combined with electroacupuncture (EA) treatment could decrease the proportion of proinflammatory microglia/macrophages and neurotoxic A1 reactive astrocytes and inhibit glial scar formation to enhance axonal regeneration after spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS Adult rats were divided into 5 groups after complete transection of the spinal cord at the T10 level: a control group, a nonacupoint EA (NA-EA) group, an EA group, an MSC group, and an MSCs+EA group. Immunofluorescence labeling, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and Western blots were performed. RESULTS The results showed that MSCs+EA treatment reduced the proportion of proinflammatory M1 subtype microglia/macrophages, but increased the differentiation of anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype cells, thereby suppressing the mRNA and protein expression of proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α and IL-1β) and increasing the expression of an anti-inflammatory cytokine (interleukin [IL]-10) on days 7 and 14 after SCI. The changes in expression correlated with the attenuated neurotoxic A1 reactive astrocytes and glial scar, which in turn facilitated the axonal regeneration of the injured spinal cord. In vitro, the proinflammatory cytokines increased the level of proliferation of astrocytes and increased the expression levels of C3, glial fibrillary acidic protein, and chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan. These effects were blocked by administering inhibitors of ErbB1 and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) (AG1478 and AG490) and IL-10. CONCLUSION These findings showed that MSCs+EA treatment synergistically regulated the microglia/macrophage subpopulation to reduce inflammation, the formation of neurotoxic A1 astrocytes, and glial scars. This was achieved by downregulating the ErbB1-STAT3 signal pathway, thereby providing a favorable microenvironment conducive to axonal regeneration after SCI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Electroacupuncture (EA) has been shown to attenuate airway inflammation in asthmatic mice; however, the underlying mechanism is not fully understood. Studies have shown that EA can significantly increase the inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) content in mice, and can also increase the expression level of GABA type A receptor (GABAAR). Furthermore, activating GABAAR may relieve inflammation in asthma by suppressing toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the role of GABAergic system and TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway in asthmatic mice treated with EA. METHODS A mouse model of asthma was established, and a series of methods including Western blot and histological staining assessment were employed to detect the level of GABA, and expressions of GABAAR and TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB in lung tissue. In addition, GABAAR antagonist was used to further validate the role and mechanism of GABAergic system in mediating the therapeutic effect of EA in asthma. RESULTS The mouse model of asthma was established successfully, and EA was verified to alleviate airway inflammation in asthmatic mice. The release of GABA and the expression of GABAAR were significantly increased in asthmatic mice treated with EA compared with untreated asthmatic mice ( P < 0.01), and the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway was down-regulated. Moreover, inhibition of GABAAR attenuated the beneficial effects of EA in asthma, including the regulation of airway resistance and inflammation, as well as the inhibitory effects on TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that GABAergic system may be involved in mediating the therapeutic effect of EA in asthma, possibly by suppressing the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway.

Abstract
Objective: Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA), is the most common joint disease worldwide. The pathogenesis of KOA is complex and electroacupuncture (EA) is an effective therapy for KOA, but the mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we aim to investigate the potential therapeutic effect of EA on the rat model of KOA induced by monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) and its relationship with NLRP3 inflammasome by immunohistochemistry and western blot. Methods: KOA was induced by intra-articular injection of MIA (3 mg/50 μL) into the right knee joint of rats. Forty-five male rats weighing 250-300 g were randomly divided into 3 groups: control group, KOA group, and KOA + electroacupuncture group (KOA+EA). EA treatment lasted for 2 weeks (6 times a week). Paw withdrawal threshold tests were used to assess mechanical allodynia once a week. Safranin O/Fast Green and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining were used to assess the damage to cartilage, synovium, and subpatellar fat pad (IFP). Immunohistochemistry was used to observe NLRP3 inflammasome-associated protein-positive cells in the same field of view and western blot was used to detect the expression of the associated protein in cartilage tissue. Results: The KOA group showed mechanical hyperalgesia, joint inflammation, and significant cartilage tissue destruction. Safranin O/Fast Green and H&E staining revealed that EA alleviated the joint pathological changes caused by KOA and had a protective effect on cartilage, synovium, and IFP destruction. Mechanical allodynia pain and joint swelling were reduced in KOA rats after EA treatment. Immunohistochemistry and western blot showed significant inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome-associated protein. Conclusion: The results indicate that EA can inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome and reduce pyroptosis, which results in the protection of cartilage tissue and the treatment of KOA. It provides reliable evidence for the development of EA in the treatment of KOA and the clinical application of acupuncture.

Abstract
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a diffuse network that regulates physiological systems to maintain body homeostasis by integrating inputs from the internal and external environment, including the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric nervous systems (ENS). Recent evidence suggests that ANS is one of the key neural pathways for acupuncture signal transduction, which has attracted worldwide attention in the acupuncture field. Here, we reviewed the basic and clinical research published in PubMed over the past 20 years on the effects of acupuncture on ANS regulation and homeostasis maintenance. It was found that acupuncture effectively alleviates ANS dysfunction-associated symptoms in its indications, such as migraine, depression, insomnia, functional dyspepsia, functional constipation. Acupuncture stimulation on some specific acupoints activates sensory nerve fibers, the spinal cord, and the brain. Using information integration and efferents from a complex network of autonomic nuclei of the brain, such as the insular cortex (IC), prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), amygdala (AMG), hypothalamus, periaqueductal gray (PAG), nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), ventrolateral medulla (VLM), nucleus ambiguus (AMB), acupuncture alleviates visceral dysfunction, inflammation via efferent autonomic nerves, and relieves pain and pain affect. The modulating pattern of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves is associated with acupuncture stimulation on specific acupoints, intervention parameters, and disease models, and the relationships among them require further exploration. In conclusion, ANS is one of the therapeutic targets for acupuncture and mediates acupuncture's actions, which restores homeostasis. A systemic study is needed to determine the rules and mechanisms underlying the effects of acupoint stimulation on corresponding organs mediated by specific central nervous networks and the efferent ANS.

Abstract
Acupuncture has been a staple of Eastern medicine for thousands of years. Recent evidence has shown that benefits for spinal stenosis are strong. In this comprehensive review, we overview the history and available literature. We discuss how the techniques have evolved and the clinical utility. The process and progression of spinal stenosis is addressed. We discuss mechanism of action for acupuncture as well as relevant treatment implications. This is important in alleviating pain and providing strong quality of life. We highlight both the findings in the pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative periods. Finally, the pre-clinical data provides compelling evidence in terms of novel pathways being targeted. This resource will serve as a user-friendly guide for the clinician and scientist regarding this important topic. It will be the catalyst of ongoing investigation from both the clinical and pre-clinical side.

Transcriptomic Profiling of Electroacupuncture Regulating the Molecular Network in Hippocampus of Rats with Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury. Abstract
Objective. To explore the mechanism of electroacupuncture stimulation of the hand-taiyin meridian in regulating the molecular network of rats with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury based on transcriptomics. Methods. Male SD rats were randomly divided into sham operation group, model group, and electroacupuncture (EA) group. Middle cerebral artery embolization/reperfusion injury (MCAO/R) was used to establish the model group and EA group. The sham operation group only performed sham operation without modeling and any intervention, and the model group was bound daily. The EA group received electroacupuncture to stimulate the acupoints of hand-taiyin meridian for 14 days. Then, neurological scores, pathomorphological observations, and Tunel staining were performed. Finally, the affected hippocampus of the rat was used for transcriptome sequencing and RT-PCR detection. Results. After electroacupuncture intervention in rats, neurological function scores were improved, and neuronal apoptosis was reduced. The results of transcriptomics showed that a total of 1097 differentially expressed genes were obtained, of which 422 were upregulated and 675 were downregulated. The bioinformatics analysis showed that those differentially expressed genes were related to axon development, neuron projection development, neuron projection morphogenesis, plasma membrane cell projection morphogenesis, cell part morphogenesis, notch signaling pathway, long-term potentiation, MAPK signaling pathway, Hedgehog signaling pathway, and so on. The results of RT-PCR showed that Caspase 9 mRNA increased and BDNF, Grin2a, and PlexinD1 mRNA decreased after electroacupuncture intervention
. Conclusion. Electroacupuncture intervention on hand-taiyin meridian may reduce neurological function scores, inhibit neuron apoptosis, and enhance neuronal repair neuroreparation in MCAO/R rats, which may be related to the regulation of genes such as Caspase 9, BDNF, Grin2a, and PlexinD1.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to investigate the analgesic effect and mechanism of electroacupuncture (EA) in nicotine withdrawal-induced hyperalgesia rats. Methods Behavioral testing was conducted twice a week for 7 weeks during nicotine administration using von Frey filaments. Electroacupuncture at the bilateral “Zusanli” and “Taichong” points was applied daily for 3 days during nicotine withdrawal. Western blot analysis and immunohistology were used to determine expression levels of pain-related factors in the spinal cord and midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG). Results Behavioral tests showed that electroacupuncture had a significant analgesic effect on nicotine withdrawal-induced hyperalgesic rats. Western blot results demonstrated that, in hyperalgesic rats, the expressions of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (subunits: nAChR α7, α4, or β2) decreased in the spinal cord, nAChR α7, and β2 decreased in PAG. The proinflammatory factor cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2) and the activated microglia (ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1, Iba1 positive cells) increased in the spinal cord and PAG compared to controls. After electroacupuncture treatment, nAChR α7 and nAChR β2 expressions increased significantly, and COX2 and Iba1 expressions decreased in the spinal cord. Compared with the nonelectroacupuncture nicotine withdrawal group, electroacupuncture stimulation increased the expression of nAChR α7 and nAChR α4 in the PAG of rats with electroacupuncture. Immunohistochemical results confirmed that electroacupuncture reversed nicotine withdrawal-induced changes in nAChR α7 positive neurons and Iba1-positive microglia in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Conclusion Electroacupuncture treatment has an analgesic effect on nicotine withdrawal-induced pain in nicotine-dependent rats. The mechanism of analgesia of the electroacupuncture treatment relates to the increased expression of nAChR α7 and nAChR β2 proteins in the spinal cord, nAChR α7 in the PAG, and decreased expression of Iba1 and COX2 protein in the spinal cord.

Abstract
AIMS Electroacupuncture (EA) is a potentially useful treatment for inflammatory pain. Receptor-interacting protein 3 (RIP3) triggers the NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome; activation independent of necroptosis has been reported. However, the role of RIP3 in inflammatory pain and its EA-induced analgesic effects remains unclear. MAIN METHODS Mice were treated with EA (2 Hz, 2 mA) after complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) pain models were established. Inhibition or activation of spinal RIP3 was achieved by intrathecal administration of GSK-843 (a specific RIP3 inhibitor) or microinjection of lentivirus-RIP3, respectively. Mechanical analgesiometry and thermal analgesiometry were used to assess paw withdrawal threshold and paw withdrawal latency in mice. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blotting were used to evaluate the expression of RIP3 and NLPR3 in spinal dorsal horn (SDH) of mice. KEY FINDINGS The expression of spinal RIP3 and NLPR3 increased significantly after CFA injection. Both intrathecal administration of GSK-843 and EA alleviated mechanical and thermal pain behaviors induced by CFA and inhibited the expression of RIP3 and NLRP3 in the SDH of CFA mice. Over-expression of RIP3 induces pain-like symptoms in mice and inhibits the regulatory effects of EA on inflammatory pain. SIGNIFICANCE Our results indicate that the EA analgesia effect may be related to suppression of RIP3 and NLRP3 expression in the SDH. This study could provide potential insights into the underlying spinal mechanisms involved in the analgesic effect of EA.

Abstract
Acupuncture has been practiced for more than 2000 years in China and now all over the world. One core idea behind this medical practice is that stimulation at specific body regions (acupoints) can distantly modulate organ physiology, but the underlying scientific basis has been long debated. Here, I summarize evidence supporting that long-distant acupuncture effects operate partly through somato-autonomic reflexes, leading to activation of sympathetic and/or parasympathetic pathways. I then discuss how the patterning of the somatosensory system along the rostro-caudal axis and the cutaneous-deep tissue axis might explain acupoint specificity and selectivity in driving specific autonomic pathways, particularly those modulating gastrointestinal motility and systemic inflammation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Emerging evidence suggests that acupuncture plays a neuroprotective role in autism. This study aimed to explore the effect of electroacupuncture at Zusanli (ST36) on autistic-like behaviors and the underlying mechanism. METHOD Pregnant rats were administered with valproic acid (VPA) on gestational day 12.5 to induce an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) model. The pups were given electroacupuncture at ST36 daily from postnatal day (PND) 28-48. On PND28, the adenoviral vector containing small interfering RNA Nrf2 (Ad-siRNA-Nrf2) was injected into the prefrontal cortex of rats. The behavioral analysis was performed on PND 44-48. On PND48, the animals were euthanized and the brains were collected for further detection. Nissl staining was performed to detect neuronal viability. The biochemical markers of oxidative stress were subsequently measured. RESULT Electroacupuncture at ST36 ameliorated the locomotor activity, social behavior, spatial learning and memory and repetitive behavior compared with ASD rats. It was notable that the electroacupuncture decreased oxidative stress markers in the tissues of prefrontal cortex, enhanced translocation of nuclear factor erythroid2-related factor2 (Nrf2) from cytoplasm to nucleus, and up-regulated the levels of NADP(H) quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1) and heme oxygenase (HO-1). However, these effects induced by electroacupuncture at ST36 were abolished after injection of Ad-siRNA-Nrf2. CONCLUSION These data suggested that electroacupuncture at ST36 protected nerve function in ASD rats through Nrf2 activation and the antioxidant response.

Abstract
Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide. Thus, it is urgent to explore its pathophysiological mechanisms and find new therapeutic strategies for its successful treatment. The relationship between oxidative stress and ischemic stroke is increasingly appreciated and attracting considerable attention. ROS serves as a source of oxidative stress. It is a byproduct of mitochondrial metabolism but primarily a functional product of NADPH oxidases (NOX) family members. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase 4 (NOX4) is most closely related to the formation of ROS during ischemic stroke. Its expression is significantly upregulated after cerebral ischemia, making it a promising target for treating ischemic stroke. Several drugs targeting NOX4, such as SCM-198, Iso, G-Rb1, betulinic acid, and electroacupuncture, have shown efficacy as treatments of ischemic stroke. MTfp-NOX4 POC provides a novel insight for the treatment of stroke. Combinations of these therapies also provide new approaches for the therapy of ischemic stroke. In this review, we summarize the subcellular location, expression, and pathophysiological mechanisms of NOX4 in the occurrence and development of ischemic stroke. We also discuss the therapeutic strategies and related regulatory mechanisms for treating ischemic stroke. We further comment on the shortcomings of current NOX4-targeted therapy studies and the direction for improvement.

Electroacupuncture Attenuated Anxiety and Depression-Like Behavior via Inhibition of Hippocampal Inflammatory Response and Metabolic Disorders in TNBS-Induced IBD Rats. Abstract
This study was designed to explore the potential mechanisms of electroacupuncture (EA) in treating inflammatory bowel disease- (IBD-) related anxiety and mood disorders. A colitis model was induced in rats with 2, 4, 6-trinitrohydrosulfonic acid (TNBS), followed by ST36 and SP6 targeted therapy by EA or sham EA treatment. The elevated plus maze (EPM) and open-field test (OFT) were performed to assess the state of anxiety and depression-like behavior. Tests were carried out by 16S rDNA amplification sequence, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, immunofluorescence staining, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The analyses detailed metabolic alterations and the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathway/NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in rats' hippocampal region. Furthermore, the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis and gut microbiome was assessed. As a result of treatment, EA significantly improved in the behavioral tests and altered the composition of the gut microbiome through a significant increase in the density of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) producers mainly including Ruminococcaceae, Phascolarctobacterium, and Akkermansiaceae. EA upregulated the metabolites of the hippocampus mainly containing l-glutamine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), as well as ZO-1 expression. Whereas the treatment blocked the TLR4/nuclear factor- kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathways and NLRP3 inflammasomes, along with downregulating the interleukin- (IL-) 1β level. The hyperactivity of the HPA axis was also diminished. In conclusion, EA at ST36 and SP6 attenuated anxiety and depression-like behavior in colitis model rats through their effects on the gut microbiome by modulating the hippocampal inflammatory response and metabolic disorders, as well as the HPA axis. This study provides evidence for clinical application of EA to serve as an adjunctive treatment for IBD-related anxiety and depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral nerve compression syndrome of the upper limb. Plenty of studies showed the effects of acupuncture therapy on relieving pain and improving functional status for CTS patients. Diverse types of acupuncture therapies have been used in the treatment for CTS, but their relative treatment effects are poorly understood. This study will evaluate the effects of different acupuncture and related therapies for CTS by conducting a systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA). METHODS We will search randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture and related therapies for CTS in MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Chinese Biomedical Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Database, Wanfang Database, WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, ClinicalTrials.gov, Chinese Clinical Trial Register, and OpenGrey from inception to November 2021. Then, we will select eligible studies, extract data, and conduct risk of bias assessment using the Cochrane tool. Pairwise meta-analysis and Bayesian NMA will be performed in Stata 15.1 software and Aggregate Data Drug Information System 1.16.8 software. We will assess the quality of the evidence using the Confidence in Network Meta-Analysis application. RESULTS In this study, the treatment effects and safety of different acupuncture and related therapies for CTS will be evaluated. CONCLUSION This study will provide evidence for choosing the optimal acupuncture and related therapies in the treatment for CTS.

Abstract
Purpose In head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), the potential mitigating effect of complementary medicine interventions such as acupuncture for radiation-induced toxicity is unknown. This study aimed to assess the impact of acupuncture on the incidence and degree of severity of common radiation-induced side effects. Methods In accordance with pre-specified PICO criteria, a systematic review was performed. Two electronic databases (Medline and Embase) were searched over a 10-year time frame (01/01/10 to 30/09/20). Patients undergoing a curatively intended, radiation-based treatment for histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, larynx, hypopharynx and oral cavity represented the target population of our study. Accurate information on the acupuncture methodology was reported. All included articles were evaluated to identify any potential source of bias Results Five papers were included in our qualitative analysis, for a total of 633 subjects. Compliance to per-protocol defined schedule of acupuncture sessions was high, ranging from 82 to 95.9%. Most patients (70.6%) were randomly allocated to receive acupuncture for its potential preventive effect on xerostomia. The large heterogeneity in study settings and clinical outcomes prevented from performing a cumulative quantitative analysis, thus no definitive recommendations can be provided. Conclusions Although shown to be feasible and safe, no firm evidence currently supports the use of acupuncture for the routine management of radiation-induced toxicity in HNSCC.

Abstract
The therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on inflammatory pain has been well recognized clinically, but the mechanism is unclear. Interleukin-10 (IL-10), which is produced by regulatory T (Treg) cell, is a key anti-inflammatory cytokine for relieving inflammatory pain. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate whether EA could inhibit CFA-induced pain and attenuate inflammation progression by regulating the activation of immunocyte and inducing the expression of IL-10. In this study, mice were treated with EA (2/100 Hz, 2 mA) for five consecutive days after 1 day of CFA injection. The behavioral tests were measured and analyzed after the daily EA treatment; then, hind paw, spinal cord, and spleen tissues were prepared for assessment. The results showed that EA treatment significantly increased the mechanical threshold and thermal latency after CFA injection and boosted the expression of IL-10 in paw and spinal cord tissues. EA treatment promoted Treg cells; suppressed macrophage and neutrophils cells; reduced the expression of IL-1β, NLRP3, and TNF-α; and ultimately relieved inflammatory pain. The findings suggested that the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect of EA treatment could be partially associated with suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines mediated by induction of IL-10.

Abstract
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a common complication caused by ovulatory stimulation therapy, which manifests as an increase in ovarian volume, an increase in the number of oocytes retrieved, and increased vascular permeability throughout the body and especially in ovarian tissue. In our previous study, we found that electroacupuncture (EA) could prevent the progression of OHSS, by mainly affecting ovary. However, the specific molecules and the mechanism of this process were still unknown. In order to explore the underlying mechanism, OHSS rat model was established and EA treatment was performed, which was followed by proteomic analysis of ovaries. Results showed a significant increase in the expression level of CD200 in the ovaries of OHSS group treated with EA than those of OHSS group. Clinical data showed that the level of CD200 in follicular fluid was negatively correlated with the number of oocytes retrieved and serum E2 level. Further in vitro experiments showed a concentration-dependent role of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in reducing CD200 and CD200R levels, and increasing inflammatory cytokine levels in cultured KGN cells. In human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), the vascular barrier function was improved by CM (cultural medium from KGN cell) which treated with CD200Fc (CD200R agonist). Meanwhile, the results of in vivo experiments indicated that EA reduced the number of ovarian corpora lutea, decreased inflammatory response, and improved the vascular barrier function by increasing the expression of CD200 and CD200R in rat ovaries. These findings suggest that EA treatment may reduce oocyte number and maintain vascular barrier against OHSS through ovarian anti-inflammatory response mediated by CD200. Therefore, this study is the first to identify CD200 as a main of EA in the ovary and elucidate the possible mechanism of EA on preventing and treating OHSS, which provide a scientific basis for CD200 as an effector and indicator in EA treatment.

Abstract
Visceral pain frequently produces referred pain at somatic sites due to the convergence of somatic and visceral afferents. In skin overlying the referred pain, neurogenic spots characterized by hyperalgesia, tenderness and neurogenic inflammation are found. We investigated whether neurogenic inflammatory spots function as acupoints in the rat model of bile duct ligation-induced liver injury. The majority of neurogenic spots were found in the dorsal trunk overlying the referred pain and matched with locations of acupoints. The spots, as well as acupoints, showed high electrical conductance and enhanced expression of the neuropeptides substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Electroacupuncture at neurogenic spots reduced serum hepatocellular enzyme activities and histological patterns of acute liver injury in bile duct ligation (BDL) rats. The results suggest that the neurogenic spots have therapeutic effects as acupoints on hepatic injury in bile-duct ligated rats.

Abstract
A20-binding inhibitor of NF-κB 1 (ABIN1) is an inhibitor of NF-κB and exerts anti-inflammatory effect. Electroacupuncture (EA) is considered as a neuroprotective strategy by inhibiting neuroinflammatory damage after cerebral ischemia. This study was performed to explore the role of ABIN1 and investigate whether the ABIN1 is involved in the mechanism of EA in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) rats. Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) and received EA after reperfusion once a day. Lentivirus-mediated ABIN1 gene knockdown was used to detect the role of ABIN1 in neuroinflammation after I/R. ABIN1 expression, proinflammatory cytokine levels, microglial activation, neurological function, infarct volumes, and NF-κB activation were assessed. ABIN1 expression was elevated in the peri-infarct cortex and was further upregulated by EA. ABIN1 knockdown increased the levels of proinflammatory cytokines and activation of microglia, worsened neurological deficits, and enlarged the infarct volume. Moreover, ABIN1 was blocked to partially reverse the neuroprotective effect of EA, and this treatment weakened the ability of EA to suppress NF-κB activity. Based on these findings, ABIN1 is a potential suppressor of neuroinflammation and ABIN1 mediates the antineuroinflammatory effect of EA in cerebral I/R rats.

Abstract
Growing evidences show that gut microbiota is associated with the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) and the gut-brain axis can be promising target for the development of the therapeutic strategies for PD. Acupuncture has been used to improve brain functions and inflammation in neurological disorders such as PD, and to recover the gastrointestinal dysfunctions in various gastrointestinal disorders. Thus, we investigated whether acupuncture could improve Parkinsonism and gut microbial dysbiosis induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine. First, we observed that acupuncture treatment at acupoints GB34 and ST36 could improve motor functions and comorbid anxiety in PD mice. Next, we found that acupuncture increased the levels of dopaminergic fibers and neurons in the striatum and the substantia nigra, respectively. Acupuncture also restored the overexpression of microglia and astrocyte as well as conversion of Bax and Bcl-2 expression in both the striatum and the substantia nigra, indicating that inflammatory responses and apoptosis were blocked by acupuncture. Additionally, via 16S rRNA sequence analysis, we observed that the relative abundance of 18 genera were changed in acupuncture-treated mice compared to the PD mice. Of them, Butyricimonas, Holdemania, Frisingicoccus, Gracilibacter, Phocea, and Aestuariispira showed significant correlations with anxiety as well as motor functions. Furthermore, the predicted functional analyses showed that acupuncture restored the physiology functions such as glutathione metabolism, methane metabolism, and PD pathway. In conclusion, we suggest that the effects of acupuncture on the enhanced motor function and the protection of the dopaminergic neurons may be associated with the regulation of the gut microbial dysbiosis and thus the inhibition of the neuroinflammation in the PD mice.

Abstract
Long-term hypertension can lead to both structural and functional impairments of the myocardium. Reversing left ventricular (LV) myocardial fibrosis has been considered as a key goal for curing chronic hypertension and has been a hot field of research in recent years. The aim of the present work is to investigate the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at PC6 on hypertension-induced myocardial fibrosis in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Thirty SHRs were randomized into model, SHR + EA, and SHR + Sham EA groups with WKY rats as a normal control. EA was applied once a day for 8 consecutive weeks. The cardiac fibrosis as well as the underlying mechanisms were investigated. After 8 weeks of EA treatment at PC6, the enhanced myocardial fibrosis in SHRs was characterized by an increased ratio of left ventricular mass index (LVMI), collagen volume fraction (CVF), and elevated content of hydroxyproline (Hyp) as well as the upregulated expression of collagen I and collagen III in myocardium tissue of SHRs. All these abnormal alterations in the SHR + EA group were significantly lower compared to the model group. In addition, EA at PC6 significantly improved the pathological changes of myocardial morphology. Meanwhile, the increased levels of angiotensin II (Ang II) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) and expression of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, and MMP-9 in the serum or heart tissue of SHRs were also markedly diminished by EA. These results suggest that EA at bilateral PC6 could ameliorate cardiac fibrosis in SHRs, which might be mediated by the regulation of the Ang II – TGF-β1 pathway.

Abstract
Irreversible pulpitis is an extremely painful condition and its consequence in the central nervous system (CNS) remains unclear. A mouse model of dental pulp injury (DPI) resembles the irreversible pulpitis profile in humans. This study sought to determine whether pain induced by DPI activates microglia and astrocytes in the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis (Vc), as well as increases levels of proinflammatory cytokines, and whether electroacupuncture (EA) can be a potential analgesic and neuroprotective therapy following DPI. Pain behavior was measured via head-withdrawal threshold (HWT) and burrowing behavior at days 1, 3, 7, 14 and 21 after DPI. A marked decrease in HWT and burrowing activity was observed from day 1 to 14 after DPI and no changes were seen on day 21. Microglial and astrocytes activation; along with high cytokine (TNFα, IL-1β, and IL-6) levels, were observed in the Vc at 21 days after DPI. These effects were attenuated by verum (local and distal) EA, as well as oral ibuprofen administration. The results suggest that DPI-induced pain and glial activations in the Vc and EA exert analgesic efficacy at both local and distal acupoints. Furthermore, verum (local and distal) EA might be associated with the modulations of microglial and astrocytes activation.

Acupuncture stimulation attenuates TNF-α production via vagal modulation in the concanavalin A model of hepatitis. Acupunct Med 2020; 38:417-425. Abstract
Background: A growing body of evidence shows that neuronal activity is involved in modulating the efficacy of acupuncture therapy. However, it has been seldom investigated whether neuronal activity following acupuncture stimulation is effective at regulating hepatic inflammation. Objective: Using the concanavalin A (ConA) model of hepatitis, we investigated the regulation of inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in the liver tissue and the blood after acupuncture stimulation at ST36. Methods: Mice were subjected to ConA injection, acupuncture stimulation at ST36 by manual acupuncture (MA) or electroacupuncture (EA) procedures, and vagotomy (VNX). Liver tissue and blood were collected for TNF-α analysis. TNF-α mRNA was analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and TNF-α, CD11b, CD68, and Erk1/2 proteins were analyzed by Western blotting, immunofluorescence staining, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: TNF-α mRNA and protein were induced in CD11b-positive hepatic cells and the plasma at 6–24 h after ConA injection. The application of MA or EA was very effective at attenuating the production of TNF-α. Anti-inflammatory effects of acupuncture were greatly suppressed by VNX in ConA-injected animals, suggesting the requirement of vagus nerve activity in acupuncture-mediated anti-inflammatory responses. Electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve (SNS) resulted in an anti-inflammatory effect similar to acupuncture stimulation. In parallel with TNF-α, production of phospho-Erk1/2, which was induced in the liver tissue, was downregulated by MA and EA in liver cells. Conclusion: The regulatory effects of acupuncture stimulation on inflammatory responses in the liver may be modulated through the activation of the vagus nerve pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND LIMITATIONS Impaired wound healing (WH) and chronic inflammation are hallmarks of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). However, despite WH being a recognized player in NCDs, mainstream therapies focus on (un)targeted damping of the inflammatory response, leaving WH largely unaddressed, owing to three main factors. The first is the complexity of the pathway that links inflammation and wound healing; the second is the dual nature, local and systemic, of WH; and the third is the limited acknowledgement of genetic and contingent causes that disrupt physiologic progression of WH. PROPOSED APPROACH Here, in the frame of Predictive, Preventive, and Personalized Medicine (PPPM), we integrate and revisit current literature to offer a novel systemic view on the cues that can impact on the fate (acute or chronic inflammation) of WH, beyond the compartmentalization of medical disciplines and with the support of advanced computational biology. CONCLUSIONS This shall open to a broader understanding of the causes for WH going awry, offering new operational criteria for patients' stratification (prediction and personalization). While this may also offer improved options for targeted prevention, we will envisage new therapeutic strategies to reboot and/or boost WH, to enable its progression across its physiological phases, the first of which is a transient acute inflammatory response versus the chronic low-grade inflammation characteristic of NCDs.

Abstract
Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common sequela following surgery and hospitalization. The prevention and management of POCD are important during clinical practice. POCD more commonly affects elderly patients who have undergone major surgery and can result in major decline in quality of life for both patients and their families. Acupuncture has been suggested as an effective intervention for many neurological disorders. In recent years, there are increasing interest in the use of acupuncture to prevent and treat POCD. In this review, we summarized the clinical and preclinical evidence of acupuncture on POCD using a narrative approach and discussed the potential mechanisms involved. The experimental details and findings of studies were summarized in tables and analyzed. Most of the clinical studies suggested that acupuncture before surgery could reduce the incidence of POCD and reduce the levels of systematic inflammatory markers. However, their reliability is limited by methodological flaws. Animal studies showed that acupuncture reduced cognitive impairment and the associated pathology after various types of surgery. It is possible that acupuncture modulates inflammation, oxidative stress, synaptic changes, and other cellular events to mitigate POCD. In conclusion, acupuncture is a potential intervention for POCD. More clinical studies with good research design are required to confirm its effectiveness. At the same time, findings from animal studies will help reveal the protective mechanisms, in which systematic inflammation is likely to play a major role.

Abstract
Objective: Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by dysregulation of a host's response to infections. Sepsis-one of the most common contributing factors to acute kidney injuries in critically ill patients-is caused by bacterial endotoxins that lead to excessive production of proinflammatory cytokines. This condition can be treated with few side-effects by using electroacupuncture (EA) to regulate the neuroendocrine immune system to control the production of these cytokines. A number of studies have proven that EA stimulates the vagus nerve to manage inflammatory responses through the cholinergic pathway, slowing sepsis. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of bilateral EA at ST 36 (Zusanli) on rats' renal function by measuring their levels of plasma urea and creatinine. Materials and Methods: This study was a randomized, double-blinded, laboratory experimental post-test, with both subjects and laboratory investigators blinded. Twenty-eight male Wistar rats were divided randomly into 4 groups of 7 rats each: (1) a control group; (2) a sepsis group; (3) an EA + group; and (4) a sham EA + group. EA and sham EA was applied once for 30 minutes before intraperitoneal administration of live Eschericia coli bacteria ATCC 25922. Six hours after administration of the bacteria the rats' plasma urea and creatinine levels were measured. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the mean levels of urea (P < 0.001, 95% confidence interval (CI): 57.1-76.6) and creatinine (P = 0.005, 95% CI: 0.14-0.62) between the sepsis and control groups. Conclusions: These findings suggest that EA pretreatment at ST 36 attenuated the induced inflammatory bacteria response and mitigated acute kidney injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The clinical efficacy of electroacupuncture in treating diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is significant, but the underlying mechanism of action is not clear. Considering that glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) and caspase-12 are major proteins participating in cell apoptosis, we investigated the effects of "adjusting internal organs and dredging channel" electroacupuncture therapy on GRP78 and caspase-12 levels in streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rats to elucidate the mechanism of action. METHODS Rats were first divided into two groups: one group was rendered diabetic with a single injection of 50 mg/kg STZ, whereas the other normal control group was injected with an equivalent volume of citrate buffer. The STZ-diabetic rats were randomly divided into three groups: model control and electroacupuncture- and mecobalamin-treated groups. After 12 weeks treatment, the therapeutic efficacy of electroacupuncture was assessed using sciatic nerves isolated from rats. In the electroacupuncture group, rats were treated by electroacupuncture for 20 minutes once daily for 6 days each week, with 1 day off, for 12 consecutive weeks. The selected acupressure points include bilateral acupressure points of BL13 (Fehu), BL20 (Pishu), BL23 (Shenshu), LI4 (Hegu), LR3 (faichong), ST36 (Zusanli), and SP6 (Sanyiniiao). Acupressure points were stimulated using a HuaTuo SDZ-V Electric Acupuncture Therapy Apparatus. The acupressure points of BL13 and BL23, as well as SP6 and LR3, were connected on the same side with a dilatational wave of 3 Hz (frequency ratio of 1 : 5) to stimulate the parts of the body to the extent that could be tolerated by the rat. As for the mecobalamin-treated groups, mecobalamin was administrated to rats intragastrically at a dose of 20 mg/kg once daily for 12 consecutive weeks. Immunofluorescence and western blot analysis were used to determine GRP78 and caspase-12 levels in sciatic nerves. In addition, cell apoptosis in sciatic nerves was determined using the terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-digoxigenin nick end-labeling (TUNEL) assay. RESULTS Electroacupuncture markedly reduced the pathological injury to sciatic nerves in STZ-diabetic rats. Moreover, electroacupuncture significantly downregulated GRP78 and caspase-12 and reduced cell apoptosis of sciatic nerves in DPN rats. CONCLUSIONS Electroacupuncture improved DPN by downregulating GRP78 and caspase-12 and reducing cell apoptosis of sciatic nerves in STZ-diabetic rats, and further inhibited the occurrence of endoplasmic reticulum stress, thus preventing sciatic nerve injuries.

Abstract
Objective: To confirm that acupuncture applied to patients would improve the clinical curative effect and accelerate the patient's recovery by introducing the application of acupuncture in pre-operation, during operation, and post-operation. Data sources: Literature cited in this review was retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and was primarily published in English or Chinese from 2010 to 2018, with keywords of “acupuncture,” “electroacupuncture,” “perioperative period,” “sedation,” “analgesia,” and “recovery.” Relevant citations in the retrieved articles were also screened to include more data. Study selection: All retrieved literature was scrutinized, most typical articles related on perioperative acupuncture application in clinical study were reviewed. Results: Acupuncture could relieve anxiety and stress during the preoperative stage. It reduces the usage of narcotics and stress response, and maintains the respiratory stability and homeostasis during surgery. It also exerts a protective effect on vital organs, and during the postoperative stages, enhances the recovery while effectively alleviating the postoperative pain. This phenomenon prevents common postoperative discomforts such as nausea and vomiting. In addition, it might improve the patients’ long-term prognosis. Conclusions: The novel concept “perioperative acupuncture medicine” is to focus on the optimal treatment in the perioperative period of surgical patients. The review reveals the important role of acupuncture in enhancing rapid recovery of patients during the perioperative period.
