Abstract
Background The acute and post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection have been of great clinical interest since the inception of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite a high prevalence of individuals with persistent symptoms, a wholistic view of the effects of SARS-CoV-2 on special sensory systems is lacking. Considering the significant impact of normal sensory function on quality of life, the goal of this review is to highlight unresolved issues related to SARS-CoV-2-associated insults to the sensory nervous system. Major findings In this narrative review, we discuss the epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2-induced sensory perturbations, underlying pathological mechanisms, and possible therapeutic strategies across the olfactory, gustatory, somatosensory, visual, and auditory systems. Examined literature included studies with human biospecimens, human-derived cell lines, and naturally susceptible animal models, which highlighted evidence of persistent functional disruption in all sensory systems. SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with persistent inflammation in the olfactory epithelium/bulb, somatosensory ganglia, and gustatory systems, long-term transcriptional perturbations in the sensory central nervous system and peripheral nervous system, and detectable degeneration/apoptosis in the gustatory and visual systems. Few studies have proposed evidence-based therapeutic strategies for attenuating specific sensory abnormalities after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conclusion While the olfactory system, and to some extent the visual and somatosensory systems, have been more thoroughly investigated from symptomatology, behavioral and molecular perspectives, there is still an unmet need for the development of therapeutics to treat COVID-induced impairment of these systems. Further, additional attention must be placed on COVID-associated impairment of the gustatory, visual, and auditory systems, which lack detailed mechanistic investigations into their pathogenesis.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to identify the relationship between hospitalization treatment strategies leading to change in symptoms during 12-week follow-up among hospitalized patients during the COVID-19 outbreak. In this article, data from a prospective cohort study on COVID-19 patients admitted to Khorshid Hospital, Isfahan, Iran, from February 2020 to February 2021, were analyzed and reported. Patient characteristics, including socio-demographics, comorbidities, signs and symptoms, and treatments during hospitalization, were investigated. Also, to investigate the treatment effects adjusted by other confounding factors that lead to symptom change during follow-up, the binary classification trees, generalized linear mixed model, machine learning, and joint generalized estimating equation methods were applied. This research scrutinized the effects of various medications on COVID-19 patients in a prospective hospital-based cohort study, and found that heparin, methylprednisolone, ceftriaxone, and hydroxychloroquine were the most frequently prescribed medications. The results indicate that of patients under 65 years of age, 76% had a cough at the time of admission, while of patients with Cr levels of 1.1 or more, 80% had not lost weight at the time of admission. The results of fitted models showed that, during the follow-up, women are more likely to have shortness of breath (OR = 1.25; P-value: 0.039), fatigue (OR = 1.31; P-value: 0.013) and cough (OR = 1.29; P-value: 0.019) compared to men. Additionally, patients with symptoms of chest pain, fatigue and decreased appetite during admission are at a higher risk of experiencing fatigue during follow-up. Each day increase in the duration of ceftriaxone multiplies the odds of shortness of breath by 1.15 (P-value: 0.012). With each passing week, the odds of losing weight increase by 1.41 (P-value: 0.038), while the odds of shortness of breath and cough decrease by 0.84 (P-value: 0.005) and 0.56 (P-value: 0.000), respectively. In addition, each day increase in the duration of meropenem or methylprednisolone decreased the odds of weight loss at follow-up by 0.88 (P-value: 0.026) and 0.91 (P-value: 0.023), respectively (among those who took these medications). Identified prognostic factors can help clinicians and policymakers adapt management strategies for patients in any pandemic like COVID-19, which ultimately leads to better hospital decision-making and improved patient quality of life outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has had an ongoing impact on the public's mental health that requires long-term attention. Exploring the relationship between mental health indicators would aid in identifying solutions to improve public mental health. AIM To investigate the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and insomnia and explore the relationship among neuroticism, cognitive failures, and mental health. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in December 2023 using an online platform to recruit adult participants. The neuroticism, subjective cognitive function, and mental health of the participants were assessed using the neuroticism subscale of the Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory Brief Version, cognitive failures questionnaire, generalized anxiety disorder-7, patient health questionnaire-9, and insomnia severity index. Pearson's correlation analysis, independent samples t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and structural equation model were used to examine the relationship between mental health indicators. RESULTS A total of 1011 valid questionnaires were collected, of which 343 were completed by male (33.93%) respondents and 668 were completed by female (66.07%) respondents. The rates of anxiety, depression, and insomnia were 41.3%, 44.6%, and 36.3%, respectively, most cases of which were mild. Among the mental health indicators, there were significant differences by age and between those with siblings and those who were only children. Neuroticism and cognitive failures were significantly positively correlated with mental health indicators. Further moderated mediation analysis showed that cognitive failures mediated the relationship between insomnia and anxiety and between insomnia and depression, with neuroticism moderating the first half of this pathway and the effect being greater in the low-neuroticism group. CONCLUSION Cognitive failures and neuroticism play important roles in mental health. Therefore, enhancing subjective cognitive function and regulating emotional stability may contribute to the improvement of mental health.

Abstract
The recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has underscored the significance of viral infections, affecting billions of lives and costing trillions of dollars globally. Even beyond SARS-CoV-2, common infections with viruses like influenza, HIV, and herpesviruses have profound impacts beyond their typical manifestations, often triggering acute and chronic pain syndromes that can be life-altering. These virally induced pain states can arise through direct viral replication within neurons, or indirectly, via immune responses to infection in both the contexts of afferent signaling in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) or subsequent higher order integration in intracranial systems. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV), influenza virus, and SARS-CoV-2 each provide a unique lens through which to examine the interplay between viral activity and pain. This perspective paper is not meant to be an exhaustive review of virally-induced neuropathic pain states. It seeks to explore curated aspects of the complexities of these pain states, identify research gaps, and suggest solutions using nanoscale molecular understanding and psychoneuroimmunological and biopsychosocial frameworks. Each subheading is accompanied by a list of related issues for study which we think will lead to advances in our understanding of the vexing pain phenotype associated with viral infection.

Abstract
Background and Aims Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are an important health problem, and the Covid-19 pandemic affected several lifestyle and health aspects worldwide, including moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sedentary behavior (SB) and sleep time, which compose the 24-h movement guidelines (24-hMG). It is unclear whether meeting 24-hMG during pandemic have been associated with MSD in adult population and this study aimed to analyze the association of meeting 24-hMG with spinal MSD in undergraduate students during Covid-19 pandemic. Methods A sample of 71 undergraduate students were assessed (24.0 ± 6.6 years, 52% of women). MVPA was assessed by accelerometer, while daily time of SB and sleep were assessed by questionnaires. Spinal MSD was assessed by the Nordic questionnaire. Logistic regression models analyzed the association of meeting 24-hMG (individually and combined) with MSD, independently of age, sex, and body mass index. Results Spinal MSD affected 78.9% of sample. Only 11.3% of sample fully met the 24-hMG. Participants who did not meet both MVPA and SB guidelines were more likely to have MSD in low back (OR:3.45, p = 0.049) and spine (OR:3.78, p = 0.048) even after multiple adjustment. Otherwise, not meeting SB guideline was inversely associated with upper back MSD (OR:0.22, p = 0.012). Conclusion Meeting 24-hMG during Covid-19 pandemic were differently associated with spinal MSD, where combination of MVPA and SB shows to be protective against MSD in low back and in spine. However, the determinants of association between meeting SB guideline and higher upper back MSD still needs to be investigated.

Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a disproportionate impact on the sexual and gender-diverse (SGD) community. Compared with non-SGD populations, their social relations and health status are more vulnerable, whereas public health data regarding SGD are scarce. Methods: To analyze the concerns and health status of SGD individuals, this cohort study leveraged 471,371,477 tweets from 251,455 SGD and 22,644,411 non-SGD users, spanning from 2020 February 1 to 2022 April 30. The outcome measures comprised the distribution and dynamics of COVID-related topics, attitudes toward vaccines, and the prevalence of symptoms. Results: Topic analysis revealed that SGD users engaged more frequently in discussions related to "friends and family" (20.5% vs. 13.1%, P < 0.001) and "wear masks" (10.1% vs. 8.3%, P < 0.001) compared to non-SGD users. Additionally, SGD users exhibited a marked higher proportion of positive sentiment in tweets about vaccines, including Moderna, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson. Among 102,464 users who self-reported COVID-19 diagnoses, SGD users disclosed significantly higher frequencies of mentioning 61 out of 69 COVID-related symptoms than non-SGD users, encompassing both physical and mental health challenges. Conclusion: The results provide insights into an understanding of the unique needs and experiences of the SGD community during the pandemic, emphasizing the value of social media data in epidemiological and public health research.

Abstract
The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has required the search for sensitive, rapid, specific, and lower-cost diagnostic methods to meet the high demand. The gold standard method of laboratory diagnosis is real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). However, this method is costly and results can take time. In the literature, several studies have already described the potential of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) as a tool in the biomedical field, including the diagnosis of viral infections, while being fast and inexpensive. In view of this, the objective of this study was to develop an FTIR model for the diagnosis of COVID-19. For this analysis, all private clients who had performed a face-to-face collection at the Univates Clinical Analysis Laboratory (LAC Univates) within a period of six months were invited to participate. Data from clients who agreed to participate in the study were collected, as well as nasopharyngeal secretions and a saliva sample. For the development of models, the RT-PCR result of nasopharyngeal secretions was used as a reference method. Absorptions with high discrimination (p < 0.001) between GI (28 patients, RT-PCR test positive to SARS-CoV-2 virus) and GII (173 patients who did not have the virus detected in the test) were most relevant at 3512 cm-1, 3385 cm-1 and 1321 cm-1 after 2nd derivative data transformation. To carry out the diagnostic modeling, chemometrics via FTIR and Discriminant Analysis of Orthogonal Partial Least Squares (OPLS-DA) by salivary transflectance mode with one latent variable and one orthogonal signal correction component were used. The model generated predictions with 100 % sensitivity, specificity and accuracy. With the proposed model, in a single application of an individual's saliva in the FTIR equipment, results related to the detection of SARS-CoV-2 can be obtained in a few minutes of spectral evaluation.

Abstract
Bacterial coinfection among patients with confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a critical medical concern that increases the disease severity and mortality rate. The current study is aimed at evaluating the effects of bacterial coinfections among COVID-19 patients, especially in relation to degree of severity and mortality. A retrospective study was conducted for patients with positive COVID-19 test, admitted to a regional COVID-19 hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between May and August 2020. A specimen (e.g., blood, urine, or sputum) was collected from patients with confirmed COVID-19, and was cultured to determine bacterial coinfection caused by multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. COVID-19 patients were categorized into 2 groups based on the result of bacterial coinfection culture, as COVID-19 patients with coinfection and COVID-19 patients without coinfection. Independent sample t test or Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare age and hospitalization period between these groups. In addition, binominal logistic regression was applied to identify risk factors associated with mortality and bacterial coinfection. The study included 342 patients with laboratory confirmed COVID-19. Eighty (23.3%) patients were diagnosed with bacterial coinfection, while the remaining 262 (76.6%) patients did not test positive for bacterial coinfection. Length of hospital stay was prolonged among COVID-19 patients diagnosed with bacterial coinfection (16.01 ± 11.36 days) when compared with patients without bacterial coinfection (6.5 ± 6.12 days). Likewise, the mortality rate was significantly higher among COVID-19 patients with bacterial coinfection (90%) compared to those without bacterial coinfection (49.2%). Gram-negative bacteria were predominant compared to gram-positive, as Klebsiella pneumoniae (35 [43.8%]) and Acinetobacter baumanni (32 [40%]). On the other hand, Staphylococcus aureus (4 [5%]), Enterococcus faecalis (1 [1.3%]), and Enterococcus faecium (1 [1.3%]) were identified as gram-positive bacterial species from recruited patients. The findings of the current study showed that prolong hospitalization is the main risk factor associated with bacterial coinfection and death. Thus, health care providers should minimize hospitalization as well as following a continuous monitoring for bacterial coinfection among COVID-19 patients, to control the spread of infection and reducing the severity and mortality rate among COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
The emergence of long COVID during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has presented considerable challenges for healthcare professionals and researchers. The task of identifying relevant literature is particularly daunting due to the rapidly evolving scientific landscape, inconsistent definitions, and a lack of standardized nomenclature. This paper proposes a novel solution to this challenge by employing machine learning techniques to classify long COVID literature. However, the scarcity of annotated data for machine learning poses a significant obstacle. To overcome this, we introduce a strategy called medical paraphrasing, which diversifies the training data while maintaining the original content. Additionally, we propose a Data-Reweighting-Based Multi-Level Optimization Framework for Domain Adaptive Paraphrasing, supported by a Meta-Weight-Network (MWN). This innovative approach incorporates feedback from the downstream text classification model to influence the training of the paraphrasing model. During the training process, the framework assigns higher weights to the training examples that contribute more effectively to the downstream task of long COVID text classification. Our findings demonstrate that this method substantially improves the accuracy and efficiency of long COVID literature classification, offering a valuable tool for physicians and researchers navigating this complex and ever-evolving field.

Abstract
Physical pain has trended upward globally over the last decade. Here, we explore whether the COVID-19 pandemic modified this alarming trend. We used data from 146 countries worldwide (510,247 respondents) to examine whether pain levels changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adjusted regressions across countries revealed that 33.3% of people were in pain in 2019, 32.8% in 2020, 32.5% in 2021, and 34.1% in 2022. The change in pain from 2019 to each of the pandemic years was not statistically significant. This suggests that, on average, there was no significant change in pain during the pandemic. However, from 2019 to 2020 there was a significant decline in pain among individuals over 55 years of age, those who were widowed, and those without children in the household. On a global scale, the COVID-19 pandemic was not associated with a significant change in pain levels. The concerning pre-pandemic elevation in global pain continued during this challenging period.

Abstract
Background Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) usually complain of fever, cough, and sore throat. This study examined the effects of aromatherapy on sore throat, nasal symptoms, stress, fatigue, and sleep quality by administering it to adults with post-COVID-19 condition. Methods This study was conducted in a randomised controlled design. Its target population were adults who were released from COVID-19 quarantine treatment within 45 days from infection onset and capable of performing daily activities after isolation treatment. The participants were randomised into aromatherapy group (AG) and control group (CG). To test experimental treatment effects, the levels of sore throat, nasal symptoms, stress, fatigue and sleep quality were measured at the baseline (pre-test) and after the trial (post-test), using the numerical rating scale for sore throat, stress and fatigue, the Total Nasal Symptoms Score for nasal symptoms, and the Korean Version of Modified Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire for quality of sleep. Results After experimental treatment, there was a significant difference in sore throat in AG compared to CG on the 3rd day (t=-2.022 p=0.048) and 4th day (t=-2.450, p=0.017) of treatment. There was also a significant difference in fatigue between AG and CG on the 2nd day(t=-2.748, p=0.008), 3rd day (t=-2.948, p=0.005) and 4th day (t=-3.084, p=0.003) of treatment. There was no significant difference in TNSS, stress, and sleep quality between the two groups after the experimental treatment. Conclusion Inhaling aroma essential oils reduced sore throat and fatigue in adults with post-COVID-19 condition, demonstrating the feasibility of aromatherapy as an effective treatment. Trial registration The study was registered with Clinical Research Information Service (KCT0008029).

Abstract
Background Although respiratory presentations of COVID-19 predominate, the extra pulmonary involvement such as muscle pain, joint pain, headache, back pain, abdominal pain, and sore throat are usually included in the clinical picture of the disease and it can be considered as an early symptom in COVID-19 patients. The objective of the present study was to determine the frequency, localization, and intensity of pain in COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Imam Khomeini hospital of Ardabil, Iran. Methods and materials A prospective study was conducted on 388 COVID-19 patients who were admitted to Ardabil, Iran's Imam Khomeini Central Hospital between March and June 2020. Demographic characteristics of patients and general clinical manifestations of pain at the first admission to the hospital, localization, severity, and continuity of pain were evaluated by using a questionnaire and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Findings For the 388 (51.3% female, age 47.25 + 15.55 and 48.7% male, age 50.12 + 15.26 years old) Delta COVID-19 patients, the median duration from illness onset to hospitalization was 5 days. Patients' complaints included 89.7% fatigue, 85.56% cough, 67.8% fever, 64.17% loss of taste, 63.91% loss of smell, 37.9% diarrhea, and 11.85% skin lesions, respectively. Pain including muscle, joint, bone and low back pain was the chief complaint in both sexes. Pain complaints had started on average 5 days before admission. The distribution of pain was 313 (80.41%) muscle pain, 264 (70.61%) joint pain, 299 (77.1%) headache, 208 (53.6%) low back pain, 312 (80.41%) sore throat, and 157 (40.46%) abdominal pain. Out of 388 patients, 292 (75.25%) had diffuse pain. Conclusions Acute pain including myalgia, sore throat, arthralgia, headache, and low back pain were the most common symptoms of COVID-19 patients. Viral diseases such as COVID-19 may trigger the immune system to release cytokines that lead to muscle pain. Patients presenting to healthcare centers with complaints of pain should be evaluated for suspected COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although pain is common in non-hospitalized post-COVID-19 syndrome, only a few studies have provided information on the pain experience of these patients. AIM To identify the clinical and psychosocial profile associated with pain in non-hospitalized patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome. METHOD In this study there were three groups: healthy control group, successfully recovered group, and post-COVID syndrome group. Pain-related clinical profile and pain-related psychosocial variables were collected. Pain-related clinical profile included: pain intensity and interference (Brief Pain Inventory), central sensitization (Central Sensitization Scale), insomnia severity (Insomnia Severity Index), and pain treatment. Pain-related psychosocial variables were: fear of movement and (re)injury (Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia), catastrophizing (Pain Catastrophizing Scale), depression, anxiety and stress (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale), and fear-avoidance beliefs (Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire). RESULTS In all, 170 participants were included in the study (healthy control group n = 58, successfully recovered group n = 57, and post-COVID syndrome group n = 55). Post-COVID syndrome group obtained significantly worse punctuation in pain-related clinical profile and psychosocial variables than the other two groups (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome have experienced high pain intensity and interference, central sensitization, increased insomnia severity, fear of movement, catastrophizing, fear-avoidance beliefs, depression, anxiety, and stress.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic prompted unexpected changes in the healthcare system. This current longitudinal study had 2 aims: 1) describe the trajectory of pandemic-associated stressors and patient-reported health outcomes among patients receiving treatment at a tertiary pain clinic over 2 years (May 2020 to June 2022); and 2) identify vulnerable subgroups. We assessed changes in pandemic-associated stressors and patient-reported health outcome measures. The study sample included 1270 adult patients who were predominantly female (74.6%), White (66.2%), non-Hispanic (80.6%), married (66.1%), not on disability (71.2%), college-educated (59.45%), and not currently working (57.9%). We conducted linear mixed effect modeling to examine the main effect of time with controlling for a random intercept. Findings revealed a significant main effect of time for all pandemic-associated stressors except financial impact. Over time, patients reported increased proximity to COVID-19, but decreased pandemic-associated stressors. A significant improvement was also observed in pain intensity, pain catastrophizing, and PROMIS-pain interference, sleep, anxiety, anger, and depression scores. Demographic-based subgroup analyses for pandemic-associated stressors revealed that younger adults, Hispanics, Asians, and patients receiving disability compensation were vulnerable groups either during the initial visit or follow-up visits. We observed additional differential pandemic effects between groups based on participant sex, education level, and working status. In conclusion, despite unanticipated changes in pain care services during the pandemic, patients receiving pain treatments adjusted to pandemic-related stressors and improved their health status over time. As the current study observed differential pandemic impacts on patient subgroups, future studies should investigate and address the unmet needs of vulnerable subgroups. PERSPECTIVE: Over a 2-year timeframe, the pandemic did not adversely influence physical and mental health among treatment-seeking patients with chronic pain. Patients reported small but significant improvements across indices of physical and psychosocial health. Differential impacts emerged among groups based on ethnicity, age, disability status, gender, education level, and working status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES COVID-19 is the biggest pandemic of the 21st century. The disease can be influenced by various sociodemographic factors and can manifest as clinical, pulmonary and gastrointestinal symptoms. This study used an artificial neural network (ANN) model with important sociodemographic factors as well as clinical, pulmonary and gastrointestinal symptoms to screen patients for COVID-19. Patients themselves can screen for these symptoms at home. METHODS Data on all registered patients were extracted in autumn. The best ANN model was selected from different combinations of connections, some hidden layers and some neurons in each hidden layer. In this study, 70% of the data were used in the network training process and the remaining 30% were used to evaluate the function of the multilayer, feed-forward, back-propagation algorithm. RESULTS The sensitivity and specificity of the ANN model in diagnosing patients with COVID-19 were 94.5% and 17.4%. In order of priority, clinical symptoms, sociodemographic factors, pulmonary symptoms and gastrointestinal symptoms were important predictive factors for COVID-19 using the ANN model. Screening patients for COVID-19 using clinical symptoms and sociodemographic factors (80% importance) remains essential. CONCLUSIONS Home monitoring of oxygen saturation and body temperature as well as old age and drug addiction can be helpful in self-screening symptoms of COVID-19 at home, thereby preventing unnecessary visits to medical centres and reducing burden on medical services.

Abstract
During COVID-19, personal protective equipment such as face masks was in urgent demand in the daily life. As the pandemic may have withdrawn from public attention, the disposal of face masks is a significant issue, especially plastic pollution. To address the degradation of the polymers in the marine environment, seven commercial masks were investigated via artificial weathering procedures in substitute ocean water. A suite of structural and chemical characterization techniques was employed, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and contact angle goniometry, to probe the treatment impact on commercially available N95, surgical, polyurethane, polyester, nylon, silk, and cotton masks. This work provides insights into the comprehensive analysis of material degradation in nature and raises public awareness of environmental issues post-pandemic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some of the most vexing issues with the COVID-19 pandemic were the inability of facilities and events, such as schools and work areas, to track symptoms to mitigate the spread of the disease. To combat these challenges, many turned to the implementation of technology. Technology solutions to mitigate repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic include tools that provide guidelines and interfaces to influence behavior, reduce exposure to the disease, and enable policy-driven avenues to return to a sense of normalcy. This paper presents the implementation and early evaluation of a return-to-work COVID-19 symptom and risk assessment tool. The system was implemented across 34 institutions of health and education in Alabama, including more than 174,000 users with over 4 million total uses and more than 86,000 reports of exposure risk between July 2020 and April 2021. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the usage of technology, specifically a COVID-19 symptom and risk assessment tool, to mitigate exposure to COVID-19 within public spaces. More specifically, the objective was to assess the relationship between user-reported symptoms and exposure via a mobile health app, with confirmed COVID-19 cases reported by the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH). METHODS This cross-sectional study evaluated the relationship between confirmed COVID-19 cases and user-reported COVID-19 symptoms and exposure reported through the Healthcheck web-based mobile application. A dependent variable for confirmed COVID-19 cases in Alabama was obtained from ADPH. Independent variables (ie, health symptoms and exposure) were collected through Healthcheck survey data and included measures assessing COVID-19-related risk levels and symptoms. Multiple linear regression was used to examine the relationship between ADPH-confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 and self-reported health symptoms and exposure via Healthcheck that were analyzed across the state population but not connected at the individual patient level. RESULTS Regression analysis showed that the self-reported information collected by Healthcheck significantly affects the number of COVID-19-confirmed cases. The results demonstrate that the average number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increased by 5 (high risk: β=5.10; P=.001), decreased by 24 (sore throat: β=-24.03; P=.001), and increased by 21 (nausea or vomiting: β=21.67; P=.02) per day for every additional self-report of symptoms by Healthcheck survey respondents. Congestion or runny nose was the most frequently reported symptom. Sore throat, low risk, high risk, nausea, or vomiting were all statistically significant factors. CONCLUSIONS The use of technology allowed organizations to remotely track a population as it is related to COVID-19. Healthcheck was a platform that aided in symptom tracking, risk assessment, and evaluation of status for admitting individuals into public spaces for people in the Alabama area. The confirmed relationship between symptom and exposure self-reporting using an app and population-wide confirmed cases suggests that further investigation is needed to determine the opportunity for such apps to mitigate disease spread at a community and individual level.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 vaccines have played a crucial role in effectively reducing COVID-19 disease severity, with a new generation of vaccines that use messenger RNA (mRNA) technology being administered globally. Neutralizing antibodies have featured as the heroes of vaccine-induced immunity. However, vaccine-elicited CD8+ T cells may have a significant impact on the early protective effects of the mRNA vaccine, which are evident 12 days after initial vaccination. Vaccine-induced CD8+ T cells have been shown to respond to multiple epitopes of SARS-CoV-2 and exhibit polyfunctionality in the periphery at the early stage, even when neutralizing antibodies are scarce. Furthermore, SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines induce diverse subsets of memory CD8+ T cells that persist for more than six months following vaccination. However, the protective role of CD8+ T cells in response to the SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines remains a topic of debate. In addition, our understanding of CD8+ T cells in response to vaccination in the lymph nodes, where they first encounter antigen, is still limited. This review delves into the current knowledge regarding the protective role of polyfunctional CD8+ T cells in controlling the virus, the response to SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines, and the contribution to supporting B cell activity and promoting immune protection in the lymph nodes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-COVID syndrome is widespread and chronic pain associated with this syndrome is increasingly being seen in pain clinics. Understanding and managing Chronic Post-COVID Pain (CPCoP) is essential in improving the quality of life of patients. Relevant sections: Identify the types of pain associated with post-COVID syndrome and look for ways to treat them. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Based on our experience, we have identified five groups within CPCoP: (1) chronic pain post-hospitalization in intensive care or long hospitalizations, (2) pain associated with rehabilitation, (3) exacerbation of existing chronic pain pre-COVID-19 infection, (4) central and peripheral neuropathic pain post-COVID-19 infection, (5) chronic pain post vaccination. To fight against misinformation, we created an information capsule for doctors, nurses, and other health workers at a conference via the ECHO* program, delivered 2-3 times a year. CONCLUSIONS In pandemic and post-pandemic periods, it is important to determine the sequelae that a disease can leave in the general population, and to understand and treat them. The model proposed may serve as an inspiration to other pain centers to treat the increasing number of patients with CPCoP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Post-COVID condition (PCC) is common and often involves neuropsychiatric symptoms. This study aimed to use blood oxygenation level-dependent fMRI (BOLD-fMRI) to assess whether participants with PCC had abnormal brain activation during working memory (WM) and whether the abnormal brain activation could predict cognitive performance, motor function, or psychiatric symptoms. METHODS The participants with PCC had documented coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) at least 6 weeks before enrollment. Healthy control participants had no prior history of COVID-19 and negative tests for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Participants were assessed using 3 NIH Toolbox (NIHTB) batteries for Cognition (NIHTB-CB), Emotion (NIHTB-EB), and Motor function (NIHTB-MB) and selected tests from the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS). Each had BOLD-fMRI at 3T, during WM (N-back) tasks with increasing attentional/WM load. RESULTS One hundred sixty-nine participants were screened; 50 fulfilled the study criteria and had complete and usable data sets for this cross-sectional cohort study. Twenty-nine participants with PCC were diagnosed with COVID-19 242 ± 156 days earlier; they had similar ages (42 ± 12 vs 41 ± 12 years), gender proportion (65% vs 57%), racial/ethnic distribution, handedness, education, and socioeconomic status, as the 21 uninfected healthy controls. Despite the high prevalence of memory (79%) and concentration (93%) complaints, the PCC group had similar performance on the NIHTB-CB as the controls. However, participants with PCC had greater brain activation than the controls across the network (false discovery rate-corrected p = 0.003, Tmax = 4.17), with greater activation in the right superior frontal gyrus (p = 0.009, Cohen d = 0.81, 95% CI 0.15-1.46) but lesser deactivation in the default mode regions (p = 0.001, d = 1.03, 95% CI 0.61-1.99). Compared with controls, participants with PCC also had poorer dexterity and endurance on the NIHTB-MB, higher T scores for negative affect and perceived stress, but lower T scores for psychological well-being on the NIHTB-EB, as well as more pain symptoms and poorer mental and physical health on measures from the PROMIS. Greater brain activation predicted poorer scores on measures that were abnormal on the NIHTB-EB. DISCUSSION Participants with PCC and neuropsychiatric symptoms demonstrated compensatory neural processes with greater usage of alternate brain regions, and reorganized networks, to maintain normal performance during WM tasks. BOLD-fMRI was sensitive for detecting brain abnormalities that correlated with various quantitative neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Abstract
The coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and has been spreading rapidly worldwide, creating a pandemic. This article describes the evaluation of the antiviral activity of nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), a molecule found in Creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) leaves, against SARS-CoV-2 in vitro. A 35 µM concentration of NDGA was not toxic to Vero cells and exhibited a remarkable inhibitory effect on the SARS-CoV-2 cytopathic effect, viral plaque formation, RNA replication, and expression of the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein. The 50% effective concentration for NDGA was as low as 16.97 µM. Our results show that NDGA could be a promising therapeutic candidate against SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
Background The COVID-19 pandemic has affected human beings worldwide. After recovery from the disease, the pulmonary function and physiological characteristics of COVID-19 patients are not well documented. The current study aims to assess post-COVID-19 lung function, anxiety, depression, and sleep quality within three months after recovery from the disease. Materials and Methods Ninety-seven patients (21 outpatients and 76 inpatients) with COVID-19 were followed three months after recovery. They were divided into two groups according to the severity of the disease. The spirometric parameters included FEV1, FVC, and FEV1/FVC. A 6-minute walk test (6-MWT) was recorded. Besides, sleep quality using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and mood status in two dimensions of anxiety and depression using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were compared between the groups. Results More than 70% of the studied population presented at least one of the COVID-19 infection-related symptoms within three months after recovery. spirometric measurements revealed non-significant differences between the patients with severe versus non-severe COVID-19 in terms of FVC (P=0.805), FEV1 (P=0.948), FEV1/FVC (P=0.616), and 6MWT (P=0.409). Based on PSQI, sleep quality was significantly associated with the severity of disease (P=0.031), but HADS assessments were not significant (P>0.05). Conclusion This study demonstrated that a significant proportion of COVID-19 patients have corona symptoms and abnormal pulmonary function tests three months after recovery. Besides, sleep quality was considerably affected by the severity of the disease and was directly associated with the post-COVID-19 mood of the patients. It seems necessary to consider and control the long-term consequences of this infection regardless of the disease severity.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can affect any part of the neuraxis. Many neurological conditions have been attributed to be caused by SARS-CoV-2, namely encephalopathy (acute necrotizing encephalopathy and encephalopathy with reversible splenial lesions), seizures, stroke, cranial nerve palsies, meningoencephalitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), transverse myelitis (long and short segment), Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and its variants, polyneuritis cranialis, optic neuritis (ON), plexopathy, myasthenia gravis (MG), and myositis. The pathophysiology differs depending on the time frame of presentation. In patients with concomitant pulmonary disease, for instance, acute neurological illness appears to be caused by endotheliopathy and cytokine storm. Autoimmunity and molecular mimicry are causative for post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-sequelae. It has not yet been shown that the virus can penetrate the central nervous system (CNS) directly. This review aims to describe the disease and root pathogenic cause of the various neurological manifestations of COVID-19. We searched Pubmed/Medline and Google Scholar using the keywords "SARS-CoV-2" and "neurological illness" for articles published between January 2020 and November 2022. Then, we used the SWIFT-Review (Sciome LLC, North Carolina, United States), a text-mining workbench for systematic review, to classify the 1383 articles into MeSH hierarchical tree codes for articles on various parts of the nervous system, such as the CNS, peripheral nervous system, autonomic nervous system, neuromuscular junction, sensory system, and musculoskeletal system. Finally, we reviewed 152 articles in full text. SARS-CoV-2 RNA has been found in multiple brain areas without any histopathological changes. Despite the absence of in vivo virions or virus-infected cells, CNS inflammation has been reported, especially in the olfactory bulb and brain stem. SARS-CoV-2 genomes and proteins have been found in affected individuals' brain tissues, but corresponding neuropathologic changes are seldom found in these cases. Additionally, viral RNA can rarely be identified in neurological patients' CSF post hoc SARS-CoV-2 infection. Most patients with neurological symptoms do not have active viral replication in the nervous system and infrequently have typical clinical and laboratory characteristics of viral CNS infections. Endotheliopathy and the systemic inflammatory response to SARS-CoV-2 infection play a crucial role in developing neuro-COVID-19, with proinflammatory cytokine release mediating both pathological pathways. The systemic inflammatory mediators likely activate astrocytes and microglia across the blood-brain barrier, indirectly affecting CNS-specific immune activation and tissue injury. The management differs according to co-morbidities and the neurological disorder.

Abstract
The novel coronavirus disease, or COVID-19, is a hazardous disease. It is endangering the lives of many people living in more than two hundred countries. It directly affects the lungs. In general, two main imaging modalities: - computed tomography (CT) and chest x-ray (CXR) are used to achieve a speedy and reliable medical diagnosis. Identifying the coronavirus in medical images is exceedingly difficult for diagnosis, assessment, and treatment. It is demanding, time-consuming, and subject to human mistakes. In biological disciplines, excellent performance can be achieved by employing artificial intelligence (AI) models. As a subfield of AI, deep learning (DL) networks have drawn considerable attention than standard machine learning (ML) methods. DL models automatically carry out all the steps of feature extraction, feature selection, and classification. This study has performed comprehensive analysis of coronavirus classification using CXR and CT imaging modalities using DL architectures. Additionally, we have discussed how transfer learning is helpful in this regard. Finally, the problem of designing and implementing a system using computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) to find COVID-19 using DL approaches is highlighted a future research possibility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COVID-19 is widely known to induce a variety of extrapulmonary manifestations. Gastrointestinal symptoms have been identified as the most common extra-pulmonary manifestations of COVID-19, with an incidence reported to range from 3 to 61%. Although previous reports have addressed abdominal complications with COVID-19, these have not been adequately elucidated for the omicron variant. The aim of our study was to clarify the diagnosis of concomitant abdominal diseases in patients with mild COVID-19 who presented to hospital with abdominal symptoms during the sixth and seventh waves of the pandemic of the omicron variant in Japan. METHODS This study was a retrospective, single-center, descriptive study. In total, 2291 consecutive patients with COVID-19 who visited the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, Kansai Medical University Medical Center, Osaka, Japan, between January 2022 and September 2022 were potentially eligible for the study. Patients delivered by ambulance or transferred from other hospitals were not included. We collected and described physical examination results, medical history, laboratory data, computed tomography findings and treatments. Data collected included diagnostic characteristics, abdominal symptoms, extra-abdominal symptoms and complicated diagnosis other than that of COVID-19 for abdominal symptoms. RESULTS Abdominal symptoms were present in 183 patients with COVID-19. The number of patients with each abdominal symptom were as follows: nausea and vomiting (86/183, 47%), abdominal pain (63/183, 34%), diarrhea (61/183, 33%), gastrointestinal bleeding (20/183, 11%) and anorexia (6/183, 3.3%). Of these patients, 17 were diagnosed as having acute hemorrhagic colitis, five had drug-induced adverse events, two had retroperitoneal hemorrhage, two had appendicitis, two had choledocholithiasis, two had constipation, and two had anuresis, among others. The localization of acute hemorrhagic colitis was the left-sided colon in all cases. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that acute hemorrhagic colitis was characteristic in mild cases of the omicron variant of COVID-19 with gastrointestinal bleeding. When examining patients with mild COVID-19 with gastrointestinal bleeding, the potential for acute hemorrhagic colitis should be kept in mind.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the incidence of non-typical symptoms in ambulatory patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 infection and their potential association with disease progression. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data on the symptomatology of COVID-19 patients presenting to the fast-track emergency department were collected between March 2020 and March 2021. Fever, cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue-weakness were defined as "typical" symptoms, whereas all other symptoms such as nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, gastrointestinal symptoms, etc., were defined as "non-typical". RESULTS A total of 570 COVID-19 patients with a mean age of 42.25 years were included, the majority of whom were male (61.3%; N = 349), and were divided according to their symptoms into two groups. The mean length of hospital stay was found to be 9.5 days. A higher proportion of patients without non-typical symptoms were admitted to the hospital (p = 0.001) and the ICU (p = 0.048) as well. No significant differences were observed between non-typical symptoms and outcome (p = 0.685). Patients who did not demonstrate at least one non-typical symptom had an extended length of stay (p = 0.041). No statistically significant differences in length of hospital stay were associated with individual symptoms. CONCLUSION With the possible exception of gastrointestinal symptoms, non-typical symptoms of COVID-19 at baseline appear to predispose to a milder disease.

Abstract
Objective This article describes a protocol for a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effects of a three-level Health App for Post-Pandemic Years (HAPPY) on alleviating post-pandemic physiological and psychosocial distress. Methods Convenience and snowball sampling methods will be used to recruit 814 people aged 18+ with physiological and/or psychosocial distress. The experimental group will receive a 24-week intervention consisting of an 8-week regular supervision phase and a 16-week self-help phase. Based on their assessment results, they will be assigned to receive interventions on mindfulness, energy conservation techniques, or physical activity training. The waitlist control group will receive the same intervention in Week 25. The primary outcome will be changes in psychosocial distress, measured using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10). Secondary outcomes will include changes in levels of fatigue (Chinese version of the Brief Fatigue Inventory), sleep quality (Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), pain intensity (Numeric Rating Scale), positive appraisal (Short version of the 18-item Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire), self-efficacy (Chinese version of the General Self-efficacy Scale), depression and anxiety (Chinese version of the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scale), and event impact (Chinese version of the 22-item Impact of Event Scale-Revised). All measures will be administered at baseline (T0), Week 8 after the supervision phase (T1), and 24 weeks post-intervention (T2). A generalized estimating equations model will be used to examine the group, time, and interaction (Time × Group) effect of the interventions on the outcome assessments (intention-to-treat analysis) across the three time points, and to compute a within-group comparison of objective physiological parameters and adherence to the assigned interventions in the experimental group. Conclusions The innovative, three-level mobile HAPPY app will promote beneficial behavioral strategies to alleviate post-pandemic physiological and psychosocial distress. Abstract
Pain at the injection site is the most frequent reaction among COVID-19 vaccine recipients, but its characteristics were not fully described yet. The purpose of this study was to investigate multiple domains of pain following BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination. We included 107 subjects undergoing primary shot of the vaccination twice into deltoid muscle with a 3-week interval. They completed 6 sessions of pain assessments, one before the first and second dose (1-0, 2-0), and 1st/7th day after the first and second dose (1-1/1-7, 2-1/2-7). Pain visual analog scale (VAS), pain distribution, and pressure pain threshold (PPT) on deltoid muscle were evaluated in each session. The mean VAS (at rest/shoulder motion) was 6.0/27.6 mm at 1-1, and 12.8/34.0 mm at 2-1. Approximately, 90% of recipients showed localized pain within the upper arm. Percentage change of PPTs at 1-1 and 2-1 was bilaterally (ipsilateral/contralateral) decreased to 87.4/89.4% and 80.6/91.0%, which was recovered to the baseline level at 1-7 and 2-7. Temporary, mild-to-moderate intensity, localized distribution, concomitant with bilateral mechanical hyperalgesia on the deltoid muscle, were typical pain characteristics following this vaccination. Abstract
BACKGROUND A new clinical manifestation called post or long coronavirus disease (p/l COVID) has walked into our lives after the acute COVID-19 phase. P/l COVID may lead to myocardial injury with subsequent cardiac problems. Diagnosing these patients quickly and simply has become more important due to the increasing number of patients with p/l COVID. OBJECTIVES We compared strain echocardiography (SE) parameters of patients who suffered from atypical chest pain and had sequel myocarditis findings on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). We aimed to investigate the value of SE for detection of myocardial involvement in patients with p/l COVID. METHODS A total of 42 patients were enrolled. Our population was separated into two groups. The CMR(-) group (n = 21) had no myocardial sequelae on CMR, whereas the CMR(+) group had myocardial sequelae on CMR (n = 21). The predictive value of SE for myocarditis was also evaluated by age-adjusted multivariate analysis. P values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS When compared with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), global longitudinal strain (GLS) and global circumferential strain (GCS) had a stronger relationship (LVEF, p = 0.05; GLS, p < 0.001; GCS, p < 0.001) with p/l COVID associated myocardial involvement. GLS < 20.35 had 85.7% sensitivity and 81% specificity; GCS < 21.35 had 81% sensitivity and 81% specificity as diagnostic values for myocardial sequelae detected with CMR. While there was no difference between the groups in terms of inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein, p = 0.31), a difference was observed between biochemical markers, which are indicators of cardiac involvement (brain natriuretic peptide, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION SE is more useful than traditional echocardiography for making diagnosis quickly and accurately in order not to delay treatment in the presence of myocardial involvement.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the public's interest in pain and painkillers using Google search activity in countries with the most cases before and during the COVID-19 pandemic (January 2018 - December 2021).
Methods: United States (USA), England, France, Germany, Italy, India, Spain, Russia, Brazil and Turkey, which are the countries where the Covid 19 epidemic was most intense, were determined along with the world for the analysis. The words of "Back pain", "Chest pain", "Headache", "Knee pain", "Sore throat", "Aspirin", "Ibufren" and "Paracetamol" were written into the Google Trend search engine. RapidMiner Analysis program and Microsoft Excel program were used in the statistical analysis of the data. Correlation tests were used to determine the strength of the relationship between pain regions and drugs.
Results: The terms fo "ibuprofen", "aspirin", "paracetamol" peaked in Google searches on March 15, 2020. The search frequencies of the terms of sore throat, chest pain, and headache peaked worldwide between March 15, 2020 and March 22, 2020. The strong correlations were obtained, ranging from 0.627 to 0.901 for chest pain and headache terms, and 0.629 to 0.749 for ibuprofen and paracetamol terms.
Conclusion: As a result of the research, it is seen that the frequency of searching for pain and analgesics has increased significantly during the COVID-19 period. Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the lack of antiviral agents available for human use, while the complexity of the physiological changes caused by coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) imposed the prescription of multidrug pharmacotherapy to treat infected patients. In a significant number of cases, it was necessary to add antibiotics to the prescription to decrease the risk of co-infections, preventing the worsening of the patient's condition. However, the precautionary use of antibiotics corroborated to increase bacterial resistance. Since the development of vaccines for COVID-19, the pandemic scenario has changed, but the development of new antiviral drugs is still a major challenge. Research for new drugs with synergistic activity against virus and resistant bacteria can produce drug leads to be used in the treatment of mild cases of COVID-19 and to fight other viruses and new viral diseases. Following the repurposing approach, plant spices have been searched for antiviral lead compounds, since the toxic effects of plants that are traditionally consumed are already known, speeding up the drug discovery process. The need for effective drugs in the context of viral diseases is discussed in this review, with special focus on plant-based spices with antiviral and antibiotic activity. The activity of plants against resistant bacteria, the diversity of the components present in plant extracts and the synergistic interaction of these metabolites and industrialized antibiotics are discussed, with the aim of contributing to the development of antiviral and antibiotic drugs. A literature search was performed in electronic databases such as Science Direct; SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online); LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences); Elsevier, SpringerLink; and Google Scholar, using the descriptors: antiviral plants, antibacterial plants, coronavirus treatment, morbidities and COVID-19, bacterial resistance, resistant antibiotics, hospital-acquired infections, spices of plant origin, coronaviruses and foods, spices with antiviral effect, drug prescriptions and COVID-19, and plant synergism. Articles published in English in the period from 2020 to 2022 and relevant to the topic were used as the main inclusion criteria.

Abstract
SARS-COV-2 virus causes (COVID-19) disease; it has become a global pandemic since 2019 and has negatively affected all aspects of human life. Scientists have made great efforts to find a reliable cure, vaccine, or treatment for this emerging disease. Efforts have been directed towards using medicinal plants as alternative medicines, as the active chemical compounds in them have been discovered as potential antiviral or anti-inflammatory agents. In this research, the potential of Saussurea costus (S. Costus) or QUST Al Hindi chemical consistent as potential antiviral agents was investigated by using computational methods such as Reverse Docking, ADMET, and Molecular Dynamics with different proteases COVID-19 such as PDB: 2GZ9; 6LU7; 7AOL, 6Y2E, 6Y84. The results of Reverse Docking the complex between 6LU7 proteases and Cynaropicrin compound being the best complex, as the same result, is achieved by molecular dynamics. Also, the toxicity testing result from ADMET method proved that the complex is the least toxic and the safest possible drug. In addition, 6LU7-Cynaropicrin complex obeyed Lipinski rule; it formed ≤5 H-bond donors and ≤10 H bond acceptors, MW < 500 Daltons, and octanol/water partition coefficient <5.

Abstract
In the midst of COVID-19, radical change in the work environment further exacerbated the detrimental effects of critical illness in the intensive care unit (ICU). This may be heightened if the patient experiences a lamentable end-of-life experience due to inadequate end-of-life care (EoLC). Anchoring on the theory of bureaucratic caring and the peaceful end-of-life theory, insights can be gained into the motivations and behaviors that support the delivery of palliative care during COVID-19. With this having been having said, the objective of this study was to use a narrative approach to examine the lived experience of 12 nurses who provided EoLC in the COVID-19 ward of several hospitals in the Western Philippines. Participants' narratives were transcribed, translated and analyzed. Among the themes that have emerged are: establishing a peaceful journey to death, holistic caring for the end of life, venturing into risky encounters in the call of duty, staying close amidst the reshaped work environment, and preparing the family life after a loved one's departure. The study identified the importance of assisting patients on their journey to a peaceful death, but this journey was also accompanied by a sense of self-preservation and safety for colleagues and families.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 virus is a β-coronavirus and produces a severe viral pneumonia which can be complicated by acute respiratory distress syndrome and multiorgan failure. As knowledge of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) increases, it has become known that SARS-CoV-2 has pronounced neurotropism, producing a wide spectrum of neurological complications. This article addresses the characteristics of the neurological complications of COVID-19 in elderly people.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the correlations between clinical, functional, and radiological outcomes in inpatients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS In this observational study, we recruited inpatients affected by moderate COVID-19 disease. The clinical evaluation comprised the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale (CIRS), numerical rating scale (NRS), modified Rankin scale (mRS), and the modified Borg dyspnea scale (mBDS). Respiratory involvement was assessed with computed tomography (CT) and graded with a CT-severity score (CT-SS). We retrospectively assessed functioning using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) codes of the Clinical Functioning Information Tool (ClinFIT) COVID-19 in the acute phase. Correlation analysis was performed 1) between clinical, instrumental, and functional parameters and 2) between ICF categories. RESULTS The data showed statistically significant moderate correlations between CT-SS and the following categories: b152 "emotional functions" and b440 "respiratory functions". CONCLUSION This is the first study to use the ICF framework in people with a moderate form of COVID-19 in the acute phase. Considering the correlations between some ICF categories and radiological findings, our results support the use of the ClinFIT COVID-19 for a comprehensive assessment of COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
Abdominal pain and liver injury have been frequently reported during coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). Our aim was to investigate characteristics of abdominal pain in COVID-19 patients and their association with disease severity and liver injury.Data of all COVID-19 patients hospitalized during the first wave in one hospital were retrieved. Patients admitted exclusively for other pathologies and/or recovered from COVID-19, as well as pregnant women were excluded. Patients whose abdominal pain was related to alternative diagnosis were also excluded.Among the 1026 included patients, 200 (19.5%) exhibited spontaneous abdominal pain and 165 (16.2%) after abdomen palpation. Spontaneous pain was most frequently localized in the epigastric (42.7%) and right upper quadrant (25.5%) regions. Tenderness in the right upper region was associated with severe COVID-19 (hospital mortality and/or admission to intensive/intermediate care unit) with an adjusted odds ratio of 2.81 (95% CI 1.27-6.21, p = 0.010). Patients with history of lower abdomen pain experimented less frequently dyspnea compared to patients with history of upper abdominal pain (25.8 versus 63.0%, p < 0.001). Baseline transaminases elevation was associated with history of pain in epigastric and right upper region and AST elevation was strongly associated with severe COVID-19 with an odds ratio of 16.03 (95% CI 1.95-131.63 p = 0.010).More than one fifth of patients admitted for COVID-19 presented abdominal pain. Those with pain located in the upper abdomen were more at risk of dyspnea, demonstrated more altered transaminases, and presented a higher risk of adverse outcomes.

Abstract
The current work aims to design a computational framework based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) and the optimization procedures of global and local search approach to solve the nonlinear dynamics of the spread of COVID-19, i.e., the SEIR-NDC model. The combination of the Genetic algorithm (GA) and active-set approach (ASA), i.e., GA-ASA, works as a global-local search scheme to solve the SEIR-NDC model. An error-based fitness function is optimized through the hybrid combination of the GA-ASA by using the differential SEIR-NDC model and its initial conditions. The numerical performances of the SEIR-NDC nonlinear model are presented through the procedures of ANNs along with GA-ASA by taking ten neurons. The correctness of the designed scheme is observed by comparing the obtained results based on the SEIR-NDC model and the reference Adams method. The absolute error performances are performed in suitable ranges for each dynamic of the SEIR-NDC model. The statistical analysis is provided to authenticate the reliability of the proposed scheme. Moreover, performance indices graphs and convergence measures are provided to authenticate the exactness and constancy of the proposed stochastic scheme.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic transformed everyday life, but the implications were most impactful for vulnerable populations, including patients with chronic pain. Moreover, persistent pain is increasingly recognised as a key manifestation of long COVID. This narrative review explores the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for chronic pain. Publications were identified related to the COVID-19 pandemic influence on the burden of chronic pain, development of new-onset pain because of long COVID with proposed mechanisms and COVID-19 vaccines and pain interventions. Broadly, mechanisms underlying pain due to SARS-CoV-2 infection could be caused by 'systemic inflammatory-immune mechanisms', 'direct neuropathic mechanisms' or 'secondary mechanisms due to the viral infection or treatment'. Existing chronic pain populations were variably impacted and social determinants of health appeared to influence the degree of effect. SARS-CoV-2 infection increased the absolute numbers of patients with pain and headache. In the acute phase, headache as a presenting symptom predicted a milder course. New-onset chronic pain was reportedly common and likely involves multiple mechanisms; however, its prevalence decreases over time and symptoms appear to fluctuate. Patients requiring intensive support were particularly susceptible to long COVID symptoms. Some evidence suggests steroid exposure (often used for pain interventions) may affect vaccine efficacy, but there is no evidence of clinical repercussions to date. Although existing chronic pain management could help with symptomatic relief, there is a need to advance research focusing on mechanism-based treatments within the domain of multidisciplinary care.

In the third year of the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2, COVID-19) pandemic doctors are encountering a new pathology – post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS, long covid). Musculoskeletal manifestations are among the most common and may present as myalgia, arthralgia, or arthritis. Currently, there is no generally accepted definition of the disease, its duration, classification, or diagnostic criteria, and no single view on the “content” of musculoskeletal manifestations of PCS. We have enough descriptions of the debut of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) after SARS-CoV-2. That is a question: it is a coincidence, or COVID-19 may be a trigger factor of RA? We thought that SARS-CoV-2 infection may be a trigger factor for new rheumatic musculoskeletal diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis or COVID-19 can unmask previously undetected RA. The occurrence of arthritis may be a sign of PCS with transient character. So arthritis in the post covid period may induce problems in differential diagnosis of rheumatic diseases.

Abstract
The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic has profoundly affected the quality of life (QoL) and health of the general population globally over the past 2 years, with a clear impact on people with Parkinson's Disease (PwP, PD). Non-motor symptoms have been widely acknowledged to hold a vital part in the clinical spectrum of PD, and, although often underrecognized, they significantly contribute to patients' and their caregivers' QoL. Up to now, there have been numerous reports of newly emerging or acutely deteriorating non-motor symptoms in PwP who had been infected by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), while some of these symptoms, like fatigue, pain, depression, anxiety and cognitive impairment, have also been identified as part of the long-COVID syndrome due to their persistent nature. The subjacent mechanisms, mediating the appearance or progression of non-motor symptoms in the context of Covid-19, although probably multifactorial in origin, remain largely unknown. Such mechanisms might be, at least partly, related solely to the viral infection per se or the lifestyle changes imposed during the pandemic, as many of the non-motor symptoms seem to be prevalent even among Covid-19 patients without PD. Here, we summarize the available evidence and implications of Covid-19 in non-motor PD symptoms in the acute and chronic, if applicable, phase of the infection, with a special reference on studies of PwP.

Abstract
Tietze's syndrome is a rare inflammatory disorder characterized by chest well swelling and inflammation of the costal cartilages. We describe a gentleman with repeated presentations to the emergency department (ED) with left-sided chest and sternoclavicular pain on a background of recent asymptomatic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. He had elevated inflammatory markers and MRI subsequently confirmed the diagnosis of Tietze's syndrome. Anti-inflammatory medications and colchicine eventually led to a complete resolution of symptoms. This case highlights how Tietze's syndrome -- a disorder that is potentially self-limiting, can cause great distress and should be a differential diagnosis of chest pain after excluding life-threatening etiologies related to COVID-19.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 is a causative agent for COVID-19 disease, initially reported from Wuhan, China. The infected patients experienced mild to severe symptoms, resulting in several fatalities due to a weak understanding of its pathogenesis, which is the same even to date. This cross-sectional study has been designed on 452 symptomatic mild-to-moderate and severe/critical patients to understand the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients with their comorbidities and response to treatment. The mean age of the studied patients was 58 ± 14.42 years, and the overall male to female ratio was 61.7 to 38.2%, respectively. In total, 27.3% of the patients had a history of exposure, and 11.9% had a travel history, while for 60% of patients, the source of infection was unknown. The most prevalent signs and symptoms in ICU patients were dry cough, myalgia, shortness of breath, gastrointestinal discomfort, and abnormal chest X-ray (p < 0.001), along with a high percentage of hypertension (p = 0.007) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (p = 0.029) as leading comorbidities. The complete blood count indicators were significantly disturbed in severe patients, while the coagulation profile and D-dimer values were significantly higher in mild-to-moderate (non-ICU) patients (p < 0.001). The serum creatinine (1.22 μmol L-1; p = 0.016) and lactate dehydrogenase (619 μmol L-1; p < 0.001) indicators were significantly high in non-ICU patients, while raised values of total bilirubin (0.91 μmol L-1; p = 0.054), C-reactive protein (84.68 mg L-1; p = 0.001), and ferritin (996.81 mg L-1; p < 0.001) were found in ICU patients. The drug dexamethasone was the leading prescribed and administrated medicine to COVID-19 patients, followed by remdesivir, meropenem, heparin, and tocilizumab, respectively. A characteristic pattern of ground glass opacities, consolidation, and interlobular septal thickening was prominent in severely infected patients. These findings could be used for future research, control, and prevention of SARS-CoV-2-infected patients.

Abstract
Throughout human history, infection has been the leading cause of morbidity and mortality, with pain being one of the cardinal warning signs. However, in a substantial percentage of cases, pain can persist after resolution of acute illness, manifesting as neuropathic, nociplastic (eg, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome), or nociceptive pain. Mechanisms by which acute infectious pain becomes chronic are variable and can include immunological phenomena (eg, bystander activation, molecular mimicry), direct microbe invasion, central sensitization from physical or psychological triggers, and complications from treatment. Microbes resulting in a high incidence of chronic pain include bacteria such as the Borrelia species and Mycobacterium leprae, as well as viruses such as HIV, SARS-CoV-2 and herpeses. Emerging evidence also supports an infectious cause in a subset of patients with discogenic low back pain and inflammatory bowel disease. Although antimicrobial treatment might have a role in treating chronic pain states that involve active infectious inflammatory processes, their use in chronic pain conditions resulting from autoimmune mechanisms, central sensitization and irrevocable tissue (eg, arthropathy, vasculitis) or nerve injury, are likely to cause more harm than benefit. This review focuses on the relation between infection and chronic pain, with an emphasis on common viral and bacterial causes.

Abstract
Although all countries have taken corresponding measures, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still ravaging the world. To consolidate the existing anti-epidemic results and further strengthen the prevention and control measures against the new coronavirus, we are now actively pioneering a novel research idea of regulating the intestinal microbiota through tea polyphenols for reference. Although studies have long revealed the regulatory effect of tea polyphenols on the intestinal microbiota to various gastrointestinal inflammations, little is known about the prevention and intervention of COVID-19. This review summarizes the possible mechanism of the influence of tea polyphenols on COVID-19 mediated by the intestinal microbiota. In this review, the latest studies of tea polyphenols exhibiting their own antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities and protective effects on the intestinal mucosal barrier are combed through and summarized. Among them, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), one of the main monomers of catechins, may be activated as nuclear factor erythroid 2 p45-related factor 2 (Nrf2). The agent inhibits the expression of ACE2 (a cellular receptor for SARS-CoV-2) and TMPRSS2 to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection, inhibiting the life cycle of SARS-CoV-2. Thus, preliminary reasoning and judgments have been made about the possible mechanism of the effect of tea polyphenols on the COVID-19 control and prevention mediated by the microbiota. These results may be of great significance to the future exploration of specialized research in this field.

Abstract
The global pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 has affected several hundred million people, and many infected people have suffered from a milder initial infection but have never fully recovered. This observational study investigates the pain burden in sufferers of post-COVID-19 syndrome after a milder initial infection. One hundred post-COVID-19 patients filled out questionnaires regarding sociodemographic data, previous comorbidities, present pharmacological treatment, pain intensity and pain localisation. Health-related quality of life, fatigue, emotional status, and insomnia were measured by validated questionnaires. Multiple post-COVID-19 symptoms, including post-exertional malaise, were evaluated by a symptom questionnaire. Among the 100 participants (mean age 44.5 years), 82% were women, 61% had higher education, and 56% were working full or part time. Nine participants reported previous pain or inflammatory conditions. Among the most painful sites were the head/face, chest, lower extremities, and migrating sites. Generalised pain was self-reported by 75 participants and was estimated in 50 participants. Diagnosis of fibromyalgia according to the 2016 criteria was suspected in 40 participants. Subgroup analyses indicated that comorbidities might play a role in the development of pain. In conclusion, a major part of sufferers from post-COVID-19 syndrome develop pain, and in addition to its many disabling symptoms, there is an urgent need for pain management in post-COVID-19 syndrome.
