Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate a spray-dried multivalent polyclonal antibody preparation (PAP) against lactate-producing bacteria as an alternative to monensin (MON) to control ruminal acidification. Holstein cows (677 ± 98 kg) fitted with ruminal cannulas were allocated in an incomplete Latin square design with two 20 days period. Cows were randomly assigned to control (CTL), PAP, or MON treatments. For each period, cows were fed a forage diet in the first 5 days (d−5 to d−1), composed of sugarcane, urea and a mineral supplement, followed by a 74% concentrate diet for 15 days (d 0 to d 14). There were no treatment main effects (P > 0.05) on dry matter intake (DMI) and microbial protein synthesis. However, there was a large peak (P < 0.01) of intake on d 0 (18.29 kg), followed by a large decline on d 1 (3.67 kg). From d2, DMI showed an increasing pattern (8.34 kg) and stabilized around d 8 (12.96 kg). Higher mean pH was measured (P < 0.01) in cattle-fed MON (6.06 vs. PAP = 5.89 and CTL = 5.91). The ruminal NH3-N concentration of CTL-fed cows was lower (P < 0.01) compared to those fed MON or PAP. The molar concentration of acetate and lactate was not affected (P > 0.23) by treatments, but feeding MON increased (P = 0.01) propionate during the first 4 days after the challenge. Feeding MON and PAP reduced (P = 0.01) the molar proportion of butyrate. MON was effective in controlling pH and improved ruminal fermentation of acidosis-induced cows. However, PAP was not effective in controlling acidosis. The acidosis induced by the challenge was caused by the accumulation of SCFAs. Therefore, the real conditions for evaluation of this feed additive were not reached in this experiment, since this PAP was proposed to work against lactate-producing bacteria.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of increasing levels of monensin sodium (MON) in diets with virginiamycin (VM) on the finishing of feedlot cattle. Two hundred and eighty intact male Nellore cattle (348 ± 32 kg body weight, 22 months) received one of the following five diets: control diet (without additives); diet containing VM (25 mg per kg dry matter) combined with 0 (MON0), 10 (MON10), 20 (MON20) or 30 (MON30) mg MON per kg dry matter. During adaptation (28 days), the MON0 diet increased dietary net energy for maintenance and gain compared to the control diet (P = 0.04). The combination of additives linearly reduced dry matter intake, body weight and average daily gain (P < 0.01). Considering the total study period (110 days), there was a trend of greater net energy intake for maintenance (P = 0.09) and hot carcass weight (P = 0.06) for animals fed MON0 compared to the control diet. The combination of additives linearly reduced dry matter intake (P = 0.04) and linearly increased gain : feed and dietary net energy for maintenance and gain (P < 0.01). The combination of VM with MON at a dose of 30 mg/kg dry matter is recommended for Nellore feedlot cattle because it improves the efficiency of energy utilization.

Abstract
<p>O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da inclusão do preparado de anticorpos policlonais (PAP) e/ou de monensina sódica (MON) na morfologia das papilas ruminais, incidência de ruminites (IR) e abscessos hepáticos (AH) em bovinos jovens confinados. Foram utilizados 72 novilhos da raça Brangus, não castrados, com peso vivo inicial de 261,04 ± 34,73 kg, em 24 baias (3 animais/baia) com 6 repetições por tratamento. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado em arranjo fatorial 2 x 2, sendo os fatores a adição ou não de MON e PAP. Após o abate foram realizadas as avaliações. No fígado tanto o percentual de AH quanto a severidade foram menores (P<0,01) nos animais que receberam PAP em relação aos que não receberam. A inclusão de MON foi apenas eficiente em reduzir (P<0,01) a severidade dos AH em relação ao tratamento sem o aditivo. Não houve efeito dos aditivos sobre o IR. O tratamento com MON resultou em maior (P=0,07) superfície de absorção/cm<sup>2</sup> de parede de rúmen e maior (P=0,10) área papilar em relação ao tratamento sem este aditivo. Número de papilas/cm<sup>2</sup> de parede e área média das papilas não apresentaram diferenças entre tratamentos. O uso de PAP foi eficiente na redução de AH bem como a severidade, porém não foi capaz de melhorar a forma e a estrutura das papilas ruminais, como o observado com o uso de MON.</p>

Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to measure ruminal and lactational responses of Holstein dairy cows fed diets containing 3 different starch levels: 17.7 (low; LS), 21.0 (medium; MS), or 24.6% (high; HS). Twelve multiparous cows (118 ± 5 d in milk) were assigned randomly to dietary treatment sequence in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 3-wk periods. All diets were fed as total mixed rations and contained approximately 30.2% corn silage, 18.5% grass silage, and 5.0% chopped alfalfa hay. Dietary starch content was manipulated by increasing dry ground corn inclusion (% of dry matter) from 3.4 (LS) to 10.1 (MS) and 16.9 (HS) and decreasing inclusion of beet pulp and wheat middlings from 6.7 and 13.4 (LS) to 3.4 and 10.1 (MS) or 0 and 6.8 (HS). In vitro 6-h starch digestibility of the diet increased as nonforage sources of fiber replaced corn grain (% of dry matter; 73.6, HS; 77.3, MS; 82.5, LS) resulting in rumen-fermentable starch content by 14.6, 16.2, and 18.1% for the LS, MS, and HS diets, respectively. Diets had similar neutral detergent fiber from forage and particle size distributions. Dry matter intake, solids-corrected milk yield, and efficiency of solids-corrected milk production were unaffected by diet, averaging 26.5 ± 0.8, 40.8 ± 1.6, and 1.54 ± 0.05 kg/d, respectively. Reducing dietary starch did not affect chewing time (815 ± 23 min/d), mean ruminal pH over 24h (6.06 ± 0.12), acetate-to-propionate ratio (2.4 ± 0.3), or microbial N synthesized in the rumen (585 ± 24 g/d). Total tract organic matter digestibility was higher for HS compared with MS and LS diets (69.2, 67.3, and 67.0%, respectively), but crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and starch digestibilities were unaffected. As dietary starch content decreased, in vitro ruminal starch fermentability increased and, consequently, the range between HS and LS in rumen-fermentable starch (3.5 percentage units) was less than the range in starch content (6.9 percentage units). Under these conditions, dietary starch content had no measurable effect on ruminal fermentation or short-term lactational performance of high-producing Holstein dairy cows.

Abstract
UNLABELLED To study the effects of an extract of plant flavonoids [Bioflavex (FL)] in cattle fed high-concentrate diets, 2 experiments were designed. In the first experiment, the effects of Bioflavex on the development of rumen acidosis was evaluated in 8 Holstein-Friesian crossbreed heifers (451 kg; SEM 14.3 kg of BW) using a crossover design. Each experimental period lasted 22 d; from d 1 to 20, the animals were fed rye grass, on d 21 the animals were fasted, and on d 22, rumen acidosis was induced by applying 5 kg of wheat without [ CONTROL (CTR) heifers who did not receive Bioflavex] or with flavonoids [heifers who received FL; 300 mg/kg DM] through a rumen cannula. Rumen pH was recorded continuously (from d 19 to d 22). On d 22, average rumen pH was significantly (P < 0.01) higher in the FL animals (6.29; SEM = 0.031) than it was in the CTR heifers (5.98; SEM = 0.029). After the wheat application, the rumen VFA concentration increased (P < 0.01), the proportion of acetic acid decreased (P < 0.01), and lactate concentration (mmol/L) increased, but the increase was not as great (P = 0.09) in the FL as it was in the CTR heifers (0.41 to 1.35 mmol/L; SEM = 0.24). On d 22, Streptococcus bovis and Selenomonas ruminantium titers increased after the wheat application, but Megasphaera elsdenii titers increased (P < 0.05) only in the FL heifers. In the second experiment, the effect of Bioflavex on the performance and rumen fermentation in finishing heifers was evaluated. Forty-eight Fleckvieh heifers (initial BW = 317 kg; SEM = 5.34) were used in a completely randomized design. Heifers were assigned to 1 of 4 blocks based on their BW and, within each block, assigned to 1 of 2 pens (6 heifers/pen). In addition, 16 heifers (2/pen) were rumen cannulated. Individual BW and group consumption of concentrate and straw were recorded weekly until the animals reached the target slaughter weight. Supplementation with FL did not affect ADG, feed consumption, or feed conversion ratio. Rumen pH and molar proportions of propionate were greater (P < 0.01) and acetate proportion was less in the FL (P < 0.01) than they were in the CTR heifers. Flavonoid supplementation might be effective in improving rumen fermentation and reducing the incidence of rumen acidosis. This effect of flavonoids may be partially explained by increasing the numbers of lactate-consuming microorganisms (e.g., M. elsdenii) in the rumen.

Abstract
Use of coproducts such as corn and sorghum distillers grain (DG) and corn gluten feed (CGF) in beef cattle finishing diets has increased significantly in recent years, but research to evaluate the efficacy of traditional feeding practices and feed additives when coproducts are fed has not kept pace. Grain processing methods that increase starch availability seem equally effective in traditional diets and diets with wet CGF; however, in wet DG diets, some studies have shown decreased efficacy of grain processing, whereas others have shown no evidence of an interaction. Limited data are available on the physical and nutritional value of the fiber in wet DG and CGF; however, CGF at concentrations >/=25% of the dietary DM seems to have some degree of "roughage value," whereas fiber in wet DG seems to have less potential to replace traditional roughage sources. There is little evidence that efficacy of ionophores and antibiotics is changed with diets based on wet CGF or that they interact when wet DG is added to finishing diets. In vitro data from our laboratory suggest no loss of monensin efficacy in substrates with 15% (DM basis) corn DG in terms of changes in VFA and gas production. Moreover, efficacy of ionophores was not affected in our data by diet substrates with increasing concentrations of S, and in vitro H(2)S production in substrates containing wet DG seems predictable from substrate S concentrations. Nonetheless, limited in vivo data indicate decreased ruminal acetate-to-propionate ratios in diets with increased wet DG, which may minimize the potential for ionophores to alter propionate. Likewise, in vivo results indicate that feeding wet DG may decrease ruminal pH; thus, to maximize DMI and minimize digestive upsets, optimal concentrations of roughage need to be evaluated in diets containing wet DG. Research is needed on other potential technology interactions with coproducts of biofuel production such as glycerol and condensed distillers solubles. The effects of yeast products and live microbial cultures in diets with coproduct feeds have generally not been determined. Because of the elevated fiber concentrations in CGF and DG, effects of exogenous enzyme preparations on ruminal fermentation and fiber digestion of diets containing these coproducts should be evaluated.

Abstract
The objective of this work was to compare feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, and beef sensory attributes from steers finished with diets based on corn, high-tannin sorghum (HTS), and a mix of both grains. Angus crossbred steers (n = 11 steers per treatment, initial BW = 404 +/- 18 kg) were finished on diets containing 765 g/kg of DM of corn, HTS, or a 1:1 mix of corn and HTS. Final BW (P < 0.01), ADG (P < 0.001), and G:F (P < 0.01) were reduced in steers fed HTS when compared with steers fed corn. Steers fed the mixed diet had greater G:F than the average between corn and HTS diets (P = 0.04), which indicated that mixing corn and HTS had positive associative effects. Estimated NE(m) of HTS was 1.91, and estimated NE(g) was 1.35 Mcal/kg of DM. Hot carcass weight (P < 0.01), trimmed carcass weight (P < 0.01), yield grade (P = 0.04), and 12th-rib fat thickness (P = 0.01) were less in steers fed HTS than in those fed corn. Estimated percentage of HCW as boneless, closely trimmed retail cuts was greater in steers fed HTS compared with those fed corn (P = 0.02) but, due to the decreased HCW, estimated amount of boneless, closely trimmed retail cuts was less in steers fed HTS than in those fed corn (P = 0.03). Steers fed HTS had greater pH on LM (P = 0.02) than steers fed corn, but the difference was small (5.42 +/- 0.02 vs. 5.36 +/- 0.02, respectively) and within the range of normal beef pH. Diet had no effect on Warner-Bratzler shear values (P > or = 0.72). Multivariate ANOVA indicated a difference in sensory attributes of beef from corn and HTS steers (Wilks' Lambda, P = 0.04). When evaluating each sensory attribute independently, panelists found beef from steers fed HTS to be less juicy (P < 0.01), less tender (P = 0.03), and more cooked (P < 0.01) than beef from animals fed corn. Data from this study indicated that by using a 1:1 mix of HTS and corn it is possible to finish steers to similar BW and carcass quality as by using a corn-based diet. Also, total replacement of corn by HTS in the diets produced lighter and leaner animals. Total replacement of corn by HTS in the finishing diet changed beef sensory attributes, reducing the perception of beef tenderness and juiciness by panelists but without changing instrumental tenderness.

Abstract
Two studies were conducted to determine the relationship of feeding behavior to a phenotypic expression of residual feed intake (RFI), a measure of efficiency. In Exp. 1, a feedlot diet containing roughage was fed (traditional). In Exp. 2, a no-roughage diet was fed. Residual feed intake, a measure of feed efficiency, was calculated for both studies. In Exp. 1, six feed-efficient (low RFI) steers and six feed-inefficient steers (high RFI) were selected from a contemporary group of 80 steers, and feeding behaviors were analyzed. In Exp. 2, nine feed-efficient and eight feed-inefficient steers were selected from a contemporary group of 40 steers. There were no differences (P > 0.13) in initial or final BW or ADG between efficient and inefficient groups in either Exp. 1 or 2. In Exp. 1, DMI and average eating bouts daily differed (P < 0.001), with efficient steers consuming less feed and eating fewer times per day. In Exp. 2, efficient steers consumed less (P < 0.001) feed, and average eating bouts daily tended (P = 0.07) to be fewer in efficient animals. Limited differences were noted in feeding behavior between groups, with inefficient steers from both studies having a more variable eating pattern throughout the day. The average daily eating rate did not differ (P > 0.20) between groups in either experiment. The average number of days comprising a feeding pattern for both efficiency groups in Exp. 1 and 2 was found to be 2 to 3 d and multiples of 2 to 3 d. In Exp. 1, the feed intake pattern of efficient and inefficient steers changed once they reached a BW of approximately 391 and 381 kg, respectively. This occurred near d 47 for the efficient steers and near d 32 for inefficient steers. In Exp. 2, the feed intake pattern of both efficient and inefficient steers changed once they reached a BW of approximately 399 kg, which occurred on d 31 for the efficient steers and on d 33 for the inefficient steers. From the measured variables, there were no differences in growth and limited differences noted in feeding behavior between efficient and inefficient groups. The results of the trials suggest increased variability of feed intake throughout the day for inefficient animals.

Abstract
The effects of grain adaptation protocol on subacute acidosis and feed intake by cattle were studied in a completely randomized experiment using 12 crossbred heifers (384 +/- 25 kg BW). The dietary proportion of concentrate was increased from 40 to 90% (DM basis) either by rapid adaptation (65% concentrate diet fed for 3 d) or by gradual adaptation (five intermediate diets containing 48.3, 56.7, 65.0, 73.3, and 81.7% concentrate, fed for 3 d each). Feed intake and ruminal pH (by indwelling ruminal electrodes) were monitored over 20 d. Mean daily pH variables did not differ (P > or = 0.10) between treatments on any of the 3 or 4 d that 65 or 90% concentrate was fed. Variances of a number of pH variables were greater (P < 0.05) for rapidly adapted heifers than for those on the gradual adaptation protocol during adaptation to 65 and 90% concentrate. Mean hourly pH did not differ over the first 24 h of adaptation to 65% concentrate, but variance of hourly pH tended (P < 0.10) to be greater for rapidly adapted than for gradually adapted heifers for eight of the first 24 h. On the first day of feeding 90% concentrate, ruminal pH tended (P = 0.07) to be less at 11 and 12 h after feeding with rapid adaptation than with gradual adaptation. Variance of hourly pH increased steadily in rapidly adapted heifers from 6 h after feeding onward. Ruminal VFA concentration and osmolality did not differ between treatments. Ruminal lactate concentration was < 1 mM, except in two rapidly adapted heifers and one gradually adapted heifer after introduction to 90% concentrate. Adaptation method did not affect DMI or day-to-day variation in DMI. Detection of acidosis was associated with increased variance in ruminal pH variables. A range of individual responses to grain challenge was observed, but current management strategies for preventing acidosis in pens of cattle are based on responses of the most susceptible individuals. A better understanding of factors governing individual responses to acidotic challenge may allow for the development of more effective acidosis prevention practices.

Abstract
Twenty-four multiparous Holstein cows averaging 566 +/- 43 kg of body weight and 83 +/- 49 d in lactation were assigned to treatments stratified by age, days in milk, and milk yield to evaluate the effects of feeding increasing levels of wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) on lactational performance and milk composition. Complete diets containing 0, 15, 30, or 45% of the total ration dry matter (DM) as WCGF were formulated to be 17.2% crude protein and 1.72 Mcal of NE(L) per kilogram of DM, and fed twice daily to individual cows in Calan gates for 15 wk. All diets had a positive metabolizable protein balance. WCGF did not alter DM intake, but feed intake variance tended to be more consistent among cows fed 15 and 30% WCGF (DM basis). Weight gain was numerically greatest for those cows receiving 45% WCGF. Efficiency of energy and protein utilization was not different among treatments. Milk components of fat, protein, and casein were not different among treatments. Milk urea nitrogen was greater for cows on WCGF. Serum urea nitrogen was greatest in cows fed diets containing 15 and 45% WCGF. Serum insulin was lowest in the groups receiving 30 and 45% WCGF, but serum glucose and total protein were unaffected. The concentration of the ruminal volatile fatty acid, valerate, was greater in cows on the WCGF diet and highest in cows fed 30% WCGF. Ruminal ammonia was greatest in cows receiving 30% WCGF. It was estimated that 18.6% of the dietary DM fed as WCGF as a replacement for both portions of the concentrate and the forage in similar diets would have maximized milk yield without negatively affecting milk composition or feed efficiency.

Abstract
A acidose láctica ruminal é causada pela ingestão excessiva de carboidratos de fermentação rápida sem uma prévia adaptação dos mocroorganismos, podendo com isso gerar distúrbios metabólicos graves aos ruminantes. Este trabalho tem por objetivo estudar o metabolismo oxidativo dos neutrófilos em ovinos tratados com a monensina sódica na acidose láctica ruminal induzida experimentalmente. Foram empregados 18 ovinos, machos, mestiços (Ideal x Merino), fistulados no rúmen; dos quais nove receberam 33 mg/kg da dieta do ionóforo ao dia, durante 30 dias, os demais ovinos pertenceram ao grupo controle. A acidose foi induzida fornecendo 15g de sacarose/kg de peso corporal. A avaliação clínica e as amostras de rúmen e sangüíneas foram obtidas antes (momento controle) 0h e às 6h, 12h, 24h e 48h pós-indução. Em ambos os grupos os animais apresentaram manifestações clínicas de acidose láctica ruminal 6 horas pós-indução. A partir deste período se observou uma diminuição significativa (p<0,05) do pH no fluido ruminal, que alcançou valores inferiores a cinco, e diferenças significativas (p<0,05) entre os grupos a partir das 12h pós-indução foram constatadas, nos quais os ovinos tratados com a monensina apresentaram valores superiores em relação aos do grupo controle. Durante este período ocorreu uma inibição do metabolismo oxidativo dos neutrófilos nos animais estudados, ocorrendo restabelecimento desta função somente nos ovinos que receberam a monensina. O pH sangüíneo, a glicose plasmática e o cálcio ionizável sofreram alterações nos seus índices. A concentração do cortisol sérico elevou-se de forma significativa (p< 0,05) em ambos os grupos, porém diferenças (p< 0,05) entre eles foram constatadas ao final no período de observação. O tratamento com a monensina não influenciou o metabolismo oxidativo dos neutrófilos, inibido pela acidose láctica; porém se verificou uma recuperação mais rápida deste metabolismo nos animais em que receberam o ionóforo.
