Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a global public health priority due to its high morbidity and mortality. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), effective care for this disease depends on the availability of resources and the level of knowledge of healthcare workers (HCWs). However, in Bukavu, there is limited data available on these two crucial aspects, which are vital for enhancing the care of patients with SCD. This study aims to assess the availability of SCD services and the level of knowledge of HCWs in Bukavu, DRC. METHODS A cross-sectional study based on healthcare facilities (HCFs) was carried out between March and May 2024 among 501 nurses and clinicians from 58 HCFs in Bukavu. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire with 13 knowledge questions (score >7 corresponding to good knowledge) and a checklist of available resources. Pearson's χ2 test was used to assess the association between knowledge level and participant characteristics. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to determine the factors influencing knowledge. RESULTS Of the 501 participants, only 16.4% demonstrated good knowledge of SCD. Physicians were 8.4 times more likely to possess good knowledge compared to nurses (adjusted OR = 8.4; 95% CI: 4.5 - 15.9; p<0.0001). Age, clinical experience, type of HCF, attendance of SCD training, and previous management of SCD patients did not show a significant association with knowledge after adjusting for other variables (p>0.05). Regarding resources, 55.2% of HCFs had a falciform test, but none had advanced technologies such as isoelectrofocusing or high-performance liquid chromatography. CONCLUSION This study reveals a general lack of knowledge among HCWs about SCD in Bukavu, as well as limited availability of resources for diagnosis and treatment. It is essential to improve the training of HCWs and to strengthen HCFs in order to optimize the management of SCD patients in Bukavu.

Abstract
Sickle cell disease has a growing global burden falling primarily on low-income countries (LICs) and lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) where comprehensive care is often insufficient, particularly in rural areas. Integrated care models might be beneficial for improving access to care in areas with human resource and infrastructure constraints. As part of the Centre for Integration Science's ongoing efforts to define, systematise, and implement integrated care delivery models for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), this Review explores models of care for sickle cell disease in LICs and LMICs. We identified 99 models from 136 studies, primarily done in tertiary, urban facilities in LMICs. Except for two models of integrated care for concurrent treatment of other conditions, sickle cell disease care was mostly provided in specialised clinics, which are low in number and accessibility. The scarcity of published evidence of models of care for sickle cell disease and integrated care in rural settings of LICs and LMICs shows a need to implement more integrated models to improve access, particularly in rural areas. PEN-Plus, a model of decentralised, integrated care for severe chronic non-communicable diseases, provides an approach to service integration that could fill gaps in access to comprehensive sickle cell disease care in LICs and LMICs.

Abstract
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common life-threatening monogenic disorder in the world. The disease is highly prevalent in malaria endemic areas with over 75% of patients residing in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It is estimated that, without proper care, up to 90% of children with SCD will not celebrate their fifth birthday. Early identification and enrolment into comprehensive care has been shown to reduce the morbidity and mortality related with SCD complications. However, due to resource constraints, the SSA is yet to implement universal newborn screening programs for SCD. Furthermore, care for patients with SCD in the region is hampered by the shortage of qualified healthcare workers, lack of guidelines for the clinical management of SCD, limited infrastructure for inpatient and outpatient care, and limited access to blood and disease modifying drugs such as Hydroxyurea which contribute to poor clinical outcomes. Curative options such as bone marrow transplant and gene therapy are expensive and not available in many SSA countries. In addressing these challenges, various initiatives are ongoing in SSA which aim to enhance awareness on SCD, improve patient identification and retention to care, harmonize the standards of care for SCD, improve the skills of healthcare workers and conduct research on pertinent areas in SCD in the SSA context. Fortifying these measures is paramount to improving the outcomes of SCD in SSA.

Abstract
Although the prevalence of sickle cell anemia is high in Haiti, treatment with hydroxyurea (HU) is uncommon. HU therapy was started at a hospital in Northern Haiti for children and young adults who had presented with complications of their disease. The patients were followed in clinic for their response to therapy and the principal outcome was hospitalization for complications. There was a 70% decrease in the rate of hospitalization in the cohort with no significant complications or deaths during the study period. Treatment with HU is a proven therapy that reduces the morbidity associated with sickle cell anemia and efforts should be made to assure access and affordability in regions with a high prevalence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a collection of rare inherited blood disorders affecting approximately 100,000 people in the U.S. and 20-25 million people globally. Individuals with SCD experience recurrent episodes of severe and unpredictable pain that are caused by vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs), a hallmark of the disease. VOCs are the primary cause of hospitalization in SCD, result in missed workdays and school days, and decrease quality of life (QoL). Although VOCs cause significant burden in the lives of individuals with SCD, there is no synthesis on the frequency of VOCs in the real world. This systematic literature review sought to identify literature describing the frequency of VOCs experienced by individuals with SCD in real-world settings. METHODS MEDLINE and 6 congresses were searched (date range: January 1, 2000 to June 30, 2020). Studies were reviewed independently by two researchers. Studies assessing frequency or prevalence of VOCs or VOC-related outcomes were included. RESULTS Of 1438 studies identified in the search, 52 met pre-specified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Reported frequency of VOCs varied widely ranging from a mean or median of 0 VOCs/year to 18.2 VOCs/year. The proportion of patients experiencing ≥ 3 VOCs/year ranged from 4 to 67% and the proportion of patients experiencing ≥ 5 VOCs/year ranged from 18 to 59%. Measures of VOC severity were limited, with 13 studies considering frequency of complicated VOCs and only 1 study reporting duration of VOC episodes. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to systematically assess published evidence pertaining to VOCs in real-world settings. Reported VOC frequency in real-world settings varied widely, with a majority of studies only considering VOCs managed in an inpatient or outpatient setting. Studies that considered VOCs managed at home reported a higher frequency of VOCs, suggesting that many studies may underestimate the frequency of VOCs. This systematic literature review (SLR) highlights the need for consistent reporting of (1) self-reported VOCs, including those managed at home, (2) definitions of VOCs, (3) complicated VOCs, and (4) duration of VOC episodes in literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is the third most affected country worldwide by sickle cell disease (SCD). However, this disease is still orphaned in the country; large-scale control actions are rare, and little is known about its management. OBJECTIVE To assess current practices in the management of SCD in Kisangani, DRC. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted in six health facilities in Kisangani. It involved 198 presumed sickle cell patients attending the above health facilities. The study focused on the sociodemographic and clinical data of the participants, obtained through a clinical examination and their medical records. Diagnostic confirmation of SCD was made by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0. RESULTS The diagnosis of SCD was confirmed in 194 (98.0%; 95% CI: 94.9-99.2) participants, while it was not confirmed in 4 (2.0%; 95% CI: 0.8-5.1) participants. The diagnosis was mainly made by the Emmel test (42.9%). 45.8% of participants had previously been transfused with the blood of their parents. Folic acid was taken by 48.5% of participants and the previous intake of hydroxyurea was reported in 5.1% of participants. The participants vaccinated against Pneumococcus were 13.6% and against Haemophilus influenzae type b 28.3%. Penicillin prophylaxis was received by only 1.5% and malaria prophylaxis by 11.6% of participants. CONCLUSION Standard-care practices for SCD patients in Kisangani are insufficient. The Congolese government should regard this disease as a health priority and consider actions to improve its management.

Abstract
Background: Sickle cell anaemia (SCA) is the most common genetic diseases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It is estimated 30,000 to 40,000 neonates with SCA are born annually. Despite this high incidence rate, and the severity of the Bantu haplotype found in Congolese patients, major clinical characteristics remain poorly defined. The objective of this study was to assess the clinical and haematological profile of the SCA in patients less than 24 years of age. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Kinshasa, the large city of the DRC. Patients were consecutively selected in three health institutions. Results: The study includes 256 sickle cell patients. The mean age of 8.4 (SD = 4.9) years. The Hand-foot syndrome was most common (52.7%) first presentation revealing the disease in our series. The most prevalent crises found in our series were vaso-occlusive crises (VOC) in 170 cases (66.4%) and severe hemolysis in 136 cases (53.1%). Splenic sequestration was noted in 19 cases (7.4%). The age at the first pain crisis was 18.2±15.2 months-of-age and the age at the first transfusions was 29.2±27.6 months-of -age. The most common signs associated with sickle cell disease in our series were hepatomegaly (53.9%), splenomegaly (41.7%), and adenotonsillar hypertrophy (34.8%). Epistaxis was reported in 9.4%. Conclusion: The clinical course of patients in DRC was comparable to reports from Western countries, with the notable exception of epistaxis which was significantly higher in patients in the DRC.

Abstract
AIM We aimed to assess the receipt of recommended care for young children with sickle cell disease (SCD) in a central SCD clinic in Kampala Uganda, focusing on standard vaccination and antibacterial and antimalarial prophylaxis. METHODS A cross-sectional assessment of immunisation status and timeliness and prescribed antibacterial and antimalarial prophylaxis was performed in a sample with SCD aged ≤71 months in Mulago Hospital SCD Clinic. Government-issued immunisation cards and clinic-issued visit records for prescribed prophylaxis were reviewed. RESULTS Vaccinations were documented by immunisation cards in 104 patients, mean age 31.7 months (range 3-70 months). Only 48 (46.2%) received all doses of each of the four recommended vaccine types, including pneumococcal 10-valent conjugate vaccine (pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV)-10), which became available in 2014. Vaccination completion was associated with younger age and, for polio, maternal employment. PCV-10 series was completed in 54.8% of the sample and in 18.2% of those aged 48-71 months. Of children completing all vaccination types, an average 68.8% were immunised on time, defined as <60 days beyond the recommended age. Only 17 (13.5%) children were both fully and timely vaccinated. In an overlapping sample of 147 children, with a mean age of 38.4 months (4-70 months), 81.6% had ≥1 documented prescription for penicillin and/or antimalarial prophylaxis. CONCLUSIONS Standardised vaccination and antibacterial and antimalarial protective measures for young children at this central SCD clinic were incomplete, especially PCV-10 for age ≥24 months, and often late. Child age, but not general maternal demographics, were associated with vaccination and chemoprophylaxis. Clinic-based oversight may improve timely uptake of these preventative measures.

Abstract
The nutritional status and growth in children with sickle cell disease is compromised due to intake of diet that is low in calories as well as deficient in nutrients. Growth stunting and a low body mass index have been observed in these children. Some children exhibit pica, which is an abnormal eating pattern by ingesting things other than food, like paper, wood etc. This also was found to correlate to lower hemoglobin values. Interventions with certain essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids are known to benefit these children in terms of lowering their complications due to the disease. We therefore wished to see if omega-3 fatty acids exhibit positive effects on their nutritional intake and growth parameters too. Hence, we supplemented these children with omega-3 fatty acids for a period of six months. Both the male and female children with the disease significantly improved their calorific intake as well as body mass index. Also a lowering of pica status was distinctly observed.

Abstract
Background The serum ferritin assay is recommended in Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) patients receiving regular transfusions. According to several authors, elevated iron stores indicating iron chelation corresponds to hyperferritinemia ≥500 ng/ml, and becomes detectable after twenty blood transfusions. The objectives of the study were to determine the prevalence of elevated iron stores and identify associated risk factors in a case series of Steady state SCA Congolese children. Material and methods Serum ferritin was assayed in Steady state SCA children followed in 2 specialized hospitals in Kinshasa. Elevated iron stores was defined as serum ferritin level ≥ 500 ng/ml, and the associated risk factors were identified using univariate analysis. Results Seventy patients (median age 9 years, 56% boys, 53% receiving hydroxyurea) were selected in the study. Serum ferritin levels ranged from 24 to 2584 ng / ml with 21.4% of children having elevated iron stores. Mean levels of LDH, indirect bilirubin, plasma free Hb and CRP were similar between the 2 groups whereas history of polytransfusions (> 3 during the last year) was more frequent among patients with elevated iron stores (73% vs. 44%, p = 0.078). Receiving > 3 transfusions in a year vs. 0 was the main risk factor associated with elevated iron stores [OR 6.17 (95% CI: 1.81–20.96)]. Conclusion In SCA children, hyperferritinemia requiring iron chelation is most strongly related to blood transfusion. This situation concerned almost one in five children in present study; this shows the magnitude of the problem which is underestimated.

Abstract
Introduction: Sickle Cell Anemia is a disease that has a high level of morbidity and early mortality for patients that are not followed and controlled properly. Study was conducted the aim of determining experiences and problems of families whose children with sickle cell anemia. Methods: Descriptive study was conducted the aim of determining experiences and problems of families (n= 206) whose children with sickle cell anemia. Before conducting this study, a written permission from the related institution and research ethics committee approval from Gaziantep University were obtained. Questionnaire is made up of two sections (10 questions), socio-demographic of families and data about their problems (15 questions and 11 statements). Data were evaluated SPSS (21.0), number and percentage calculations. Results: It was determined that 96.1% of participants knew nothing about disease before their children were diagnosed, 92.7% of them are aware the disease was genetically inherited, all participants were a disease carrier themselves, and 93.7% of them had no blood tests before marriage. 97.1% of participants have no support from their spouses, It was determined that 98.5% of children suffer from pain, 60.7% suffer from weakness 51.5% of the participants apply to hospitals to decrease the problems and 48.5% use medications at home. Conclusion: A great number of families have problems regarding fear of losing their children, lack of social aid and support. Majority of children suffer from pain, weakness, exhaustion, they stay at hospital between at least 1 and 5 times a year, they need blood transfusion.

Abstract
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited red blood cell disorder that occurs worldwide and results in significant morbidity and mortality. In addition to affected children who are born in the US, an increasing number of children with SCD are migrating to the US with their families or through international adoption. Children arriving as immigrants or refugees have unique medical and psychosocial challenges that require a multidisciplinary team approach which takes into account the family's primary language, culture, and health beliefs. This review focuses on the special challenges for children with SCD who emigrate from sub-Saharan Africa to the US.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pediatric sickle cell disease, highly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, carries great morbidity and mortality risk. Limited resources and monitoring make management of acute vaso-occlusive crises challenging. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of subdissociative intranasal ketamine as a cheap, readily available and easily administered adjunct to standard pain therapy. We hypothesise that subdissociative, intranasal ketamine may significantly augment current approaches to pain management in resource-limited settings in a safe and cost-effective manner. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This is a multicentred, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial enrolling children 4-16 years of age with sickle cell disease and painful vaso-occlusive pain crises. Study sites include two sub-Saharan teaching and referral hospitals with acute intake areas. All patients receive standard analgesic therapy during evaluation. Patients randomised to the treatment arm receive 1 mg/kg intranasal ketamine at onset of therapy, while placebo arm participants receive volume-matched intranasal normal saline. All participants and clinical staff are blinded to the treatment allocation. Data will be analysed on an intention-to-treat basis. Primary endpoints are changes in self-report pain scales (Faces Pain Scale-Revised) at 30, 60 and 120 minutes and rates of adverse events. Secondary endpoints include hospital length of stay, total analgesia use and quality of life assessment 2-3 weeks postintervention. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The research methods for this study have been approved by the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Board Institutional Review Board (IRB2015-07), the Tanzanian National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR/HQ/R.8a/Vol. IX/2299), Muhimbili National Hospital IRB (MNH/IRB/I/2015/14) and the Tanzanian Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA0015/CTR/0015/9). Data reports will be provided to the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) periodically throughout the study as well as all reports of adverse events. All protocol amendments will also be reviewed by the DSMB. Study results, regardless of direction or amplitude, will be submitted for publication in relevant peer-reviewed journals. Abstract
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the incidence of sickle cell anemia (SCA) is estimated to affect 30,000 to 40,000 neonates per year. However, there is paucity of data on acute clinical manifestations in sickle cell children. In these circumstances, it is difficult to develop a health care policy for an adequate management of sickle cell patients. This was a seven years’ retrospective study of children admitted with acute sickle cell crisis in the Department of Pediatrics in University Hospital of Kinshasa, Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo. A total of 108 patients were identified as having SCA. There were 56 (51%) girls and 52 (49%) boys. Median age was 10.5 years (range 1-24 years). No child was diagnosed by neonatal screening. The median age of diagnosis of sickle cell anemia was 90 months (range: 8-250 months). The median age at the first transfusion was 36 months (range 4-168). In this series, 61 (56.5%) patients were eligible for hydroxyurea. However, this treatment was only performed in 4 (6.6%) of them. Pain episodes, acute anemic crisis and severe infection represent respectively 38.2%, 34.3% and 21.9% of events. Altered sensorium and focal deficit were encountered occasionally and represented 3.4% of acute events. Acute renal manifestations, cholelithiasis and priapism were rarely reported, in this cohort. In Kinshasa, the care of patients suffering from sickle cell anemia is characterized by the delayed diagnosis and low detection of organ complications compared to reports of Western countries. This situation is due to resources deficiencies.

Abstract
AIM Glomerular hyperfiltration is an early marker of sickle cell nephropathy and can lead to microalbuminuria and renal failure. Our aim was to identify the associated risk factors, as these could be of preventative importance. METHODS We recruited 150 children with sickle cell anaemia (SCA), aged two to 18 years and living in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo. Hyperfiltration and microalbuminuria were defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate of less than 140 mL/min/1.73 m² and an albumin creatinine ratio of between 30 and 299 mg/g, respectively. Independent determinants of hyperfiltration were assessed using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Glomerular hyperfiltration was observed in 60 (40%) children, who were significantly older (10.2 ± 4.1 versus 7.9 ± 4.3 years, p = 0.001) and had a lower body mass index level (14.7 ± 2.3 versus 15.0 ± 2.3 kg/m2 ) than the 60% without. A higher proportion had microalbuminuria (25.0 versus 13.3%), but the difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Increased age and decreased body mass index were the main independent factors associated with glomerular hyperfiltration in the multivariate analysis. A quarter (25%) of the 60 children with SCA with glomerular hyperfiltration had microalbuminuria. CONCLUSION Glomerular hyperfiltration was a common finding in this study and was significantly associated with age.

Abstract
Background. The aim of this study was to investigate and determine the risk factors associated with poor growth among SCA children. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Kinshasa, the capital's country. The nutritional status was assessed using the Z scores of the anthropometric indices. Results. We gathered data on the 256 patients, 138 females (53.9%), who entered the study. The mean age at presentation was 8.4 ± 4.9 years of age. Underweight, stunting, and wasting were found, respectively, in 47.7%, 10.5%, and 50.3% of SCA children. A history of hand-foot syndrome, more than 3 blood transfusions, being less than 12 months of age when receiving the first transfusion, more than two severe sickle crises per year, a medical history of severe infections, and the presence of hepatomegaly were associated with poor growth. When comparing sickle cell patients under 12 years of age (n = 159) to a group of 296 age-matched children with normal Hb-AA, a significantly higher proportion of subjects with stunting and underweight were found among SCA. Conclusion. Nutritional status encountered in Congolese sickle cell children has been described for the first time in this study. A high prevalence of poor growth in SCA children was found in our study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the incidence of sickle cell anemia (SCA) is estimated around 40 000 neonates per year. However, it is notoriously difficult to perform conventional electrophoresis in all hospitals and laboratories, especially at peripheral levels and rural area. A panel of multiple clinical and laboratory features that would enhance sickle cell disease were assessed for the detection of the disease in highly resource-scarce settings. METHODS A prospective study was conducted in Kinshasa. Venous blood samples were drawn from each study participant in order to determine the hematologic parameters, the peripheral smears, and the hemoglobin electrophoresis. We used Cohen's κ statistic to examine the agreement of each variable and diagnosis of sickle cell disease. RESULTS A total of 807 patients were screened for sickle cell disease. Among these 807 children, 36 (4.5%) were homozygous for Hb S disease. The presence of at least 8% erythroblasts (PPV: 91%, NPV: 99%, sensitivity: 83.3%, specificity: 99.6%, κ value: .86) and sickle cells (PPV:100%, NPV: 98%, sensitivity: 50%, specificity: 100%, κ value: .66) in the peripheral blood smear had an acceptable agreement for sickle cell disease. CONCLUSION These two biological markers may guide the clinician in the decision-making to initiate the management of the children as a sickle cell patient, pending confirmation of the disease by electrophoresis techniques.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Tanzania has the third highest birth rate of sickle cell anaemia (SCA) in Africa, but few studies describe severity of complications or available treatments, especially in Northwest Tanzania around Lake Victoria where the sickle gene is most prevalent. This is a report of the spectrum of clinical disease and range of interventions available at Bugando Medical Centre (Bugando) in Northwest Tanzania in Africa. METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out in Bugando between 1 August 2012 and 30 September 2012. Children (<15 years old) with SCA attending Bugando were sequentially enrolled. A trained research assistant completed a Swahili questionnaire with the parent or guardian of each participant concerning demographic information, clinical features of disease, and treatments received. RESULTS Among the 124 participants enrolled, the median age was 6 years (interquartile range [IQR] 4-8.5), and only 13 (10.5%) were < 3 years old. Almost all participants (97.6%) had a prior history of a vaso-occlusive episode, 83 (66.9%) had prior acute chest syndrome, and 21 (16.9%) had prior stroke. In the preceding 12 months, 120 (96.8%) had been hospitalized, and a vaso-occlusive episode was the most common reason for hospitalization (35.5%). Prescriptions for folic acid (92.7%) and malaria prophylaxis (84.7%) were common, but only one had received a pneumococcal vaccine, and none had received hydroxyurea or prophylactic penicillin. CONCLUSION Children with SCA receiving care in Tanzania are diagnosed late, hospitalized frequently, and have severe complications. Opportunities exist to improve care through wider access to screening and diagnosis as well as better coordination of comprehensive care.

Abstract
AIM Neonatal screening for sickle cell anaemia is not common practice in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and we determined the prevalence in children with unknown electrophoresis of haemoglobin and anaemia. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in four hospitals in the country's capital Kinshasa. RESULTS We screened 807 patients with anaemia (Hb < 6 g/dL) for sickle cell disease. The overall mean age at presentation was 42.7 months ± 29.7 months, and most patients (76.3%) were less than five years of age, with a peak incidence at seven to 36 months of age (45%). The median age at the first transfusion was 29 months (range 4-159 months). Of these 807 children, 36 (4.5%) were homozygous for haemoglobin S disease and 45 (5.6%) were heterozygotes. The proportion of patients with homozygous sickle cell anaemia was slightly higher in children with a medical history of hand foot syndrome, in children who had received more than three transfusions and in children up to 36 months of age at their first transfusion. CONCLUSION The high prevalence of sickle cell anaemia in children in Sub-Saharan Africa underlines the need for neonatal screening or, if that is not possible, screening of all children with severe anaemia to identify patients with the disease and provide early management.

Abstract
Background Sickle cell anemia is an inflammatory disease and is characterized by chronic hemolysis. We sought to evaluate the association of lactate dehydrogenase levels with specific clinical phenotypes and laboratory variables in patients with sickle cell anemia. Methods The present cross-sectional study was conducted in Sickle Cell Centre of Yolo in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo. Two hundred and eleven patients with Sickle Cell Anemia in steady state were recruited. Seventy-four participants with normal Hb (Hb-AA) were selected as a control group. Results The average rates of hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cells tended to be significantly lower in subjects with Hb-SS (p<0.001). The average rates of white blood cells, platelets, reticulocytes and serum LDH were significantly higher in subjects with Hb-SS (p<0.001). The average rates of Hb, HbF, hematocrit and red blood cells of Hb-SS patients with asymptomatic clinical phenotype were significantly higher than those of the two other phenotypes. However, the average rates of white blood cells, platelets, reticulocytes, and LDH of Hb-SS patients with the severe clinical phenotype are higher than those of two other clinical phenotypes. Significant correlations were observed between Hb and white blood cell in severe clinical phenotype (r3 = -0.37 *) between Hb and red blood cells in the three phenotypes (r1 = 0.69 * r2 * = 0.69, r3 = 0.83 *), and finally between Hb and reticulocytes in the asymptomatic clinical phenotype and severe clinical phenotype (r1 = -0.50 * r3 = 0.45 *). A significant increase in LDH was observed in patients with leg ulcer, cholelithiasis and aseptic necrosis of the femoral head. Conclusion The increase in serum LDH is accompanied by changes in hematological parameters. In our midst, serum LDH may be considered as an indicator of the severity of the disease.
