Abstract
Various aspects were compared of commercial and slow-growing broiler chickens in Thailand. In total, 416 one-day-old chicks of a commercial strain (COM) and a slow-growing strain (SG) were assigned equally to four experimental groups separated by strain and sex with 8 replications per group, using a 2 × 2 factorial in a completely randomized design. All birds were fed according to the recommended diets for each strain and sex, with the endpoint of the study at a final body weight of 2.5 kg/bird for each group. Growth performance parameters were assessed, and a separate digestibility study was conducted to evaluate nutrient intake, excretion, and retention, with a focus on assessing environmental impacts. The COM strain groups had a highly significant greater growth rate with lower feed intake and a better feed conversion ratio compared to SG strain groups, while the mortality rate did not differ between groups. The COM strain had a higher breast muscle yield, whereas SG produced significantly higher amounts of thighs and drumsticks. Furthermore, the feed ingredient ratios for energy (corn), protein (soybean meal), and phosphorus were lower in COM than for SG. The COM male broiler group had a significantly higher nitrogen digestion rate, with lower intake and excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus compared to SG. Economically, the COM strain groups had a lower feed cost than SG strain groups by approximately 16 % compared to SG, while the feed cost of COM was lower by 8 % in males and 23 % in females than for the equivalent SG groups. The interaction of strain and sex was highly significant in carbon emissions. The COM male group had lower carbon emissions compared to COM female, SG male, and SG female groups, which were 5.17 %, 11.73 %, and 31.25 %, respectively. In conclusion, raising commercial broiler chickens appeared to be more sustainable, effective and economic with a better environmental impact than raising slow-growing broiler chickens. This study did not evaluate welfare indicators, which should be addressed in future research.

Abstract
We aimed to estimate the non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) requirements of Chinese Jing Tint 6 layer chicks. We randomly allocated 720 birds to five treatments with six cages of 24 birds each, feeding them a corn-soybean diet containing 0.36%, 0.41%, 0.46%, 0.51%, and 0.56% NNP. The results showed that the body weight gain (BWG), tibial length, and apparent total tract digestibility coefficients (ATTDC) of P were affected (p < 0.05) by dietary NPP level. A quadratic broken-line analysis (p < 0.05) of BWG indicated that the optimal NPP for birds aged 1-14 d was 0.411%. Similarly, 0.409% of NPP met tibial growth needs. However, 0.394% of NPP was optimal for P utilization according to the ATTDC criterion. For 15-42 d birds, 0.466% NPP, as estimated by the BWG criterion, was sufficient for optimal growth without decreasing P utilization. Using the factorial method, NPP requirements were calculated as 0.367% and 0.439%, based on the maintenance factors and BWG for 1-14 and 15-42 d birds, respectively, to maintain normal growth. Combining the non-linear model with the factorial method, this study recommends dietary NPP levels of 0.367% and 0.439% for 1-14 and 15-42 d birds, respectively, to optimize P utilization without affecting performance.

Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate the P digestibility in soybean meal (SBM) using the regression method with different basal diet that varied in protein sources. The treatments were organized in a 4 × 3 factorial arrangement, where 4 semipurified diets were formulated with varying source of protein (no protein supplement, or added casein, potato protein isolate (PPI), or dried egg albumen (DEA) at 60 g/kg) and 3 dietary levels of SBM (290, 370, or 450 g/kg). The study was a randomized complete block design with 8 replicate cages of 6 birds per cage. The experimental diets were fed from d 19 to 22 posthatching, excreta samples were collected from d 20 to 22, and ileal digesta samples were collected on d 22. Data were analyzed as a 2-way ANOVA using the GLM procedure. The digestibility and total tract utilization of DM, P, Ca, and N were affected by protein source (P < 0.05). Diets with casein presented the highest (P < 0.05) digestibility of N. Increasing SBM level in all dietary protein sources reduced (P < 0.001) the digestibility and total tract utilization of DM. The regression-derived ileal digestibility of P in SBM was 57.8 (SE = 3.78), 63.2 (SE = 5.02), 58.8 (SE = 4.53), and 35.3% (SE = 5.27) for diets without protein supplement, with casein, PPI, or DEA, respectively; the corresponding P retention were 52.2 (SE = 11.09), 83.4 (SE = 14.89), 42.6 (SE = 15.88), and 51.9% (SE = 14.67). The protein source affected (P < 0.05) the slope and intercept of P digestibility in SBM. A comparison of the coefficients using confidence intervals demonstrated that the ileal digestibility of P in SBM determined in diets with DEA was lower (P < 0.05) than the other protein sources, which did not differ from one another. These results indicate that the selection of dietary protein supplements may affect P digestibility assays using the regression method.

Abstract
The influence of a bacterial 6-phytase on growth performance, coefficient of apparent ileal digestibility (CAID) of nutrients, blood parameters, and bone mineralization in broilers was evaluated. A total of 630 one-day-old male broilers were allocated to 7 dietary treatments, including positive control (PC) diet containing dicalcium phosphate, the PC marginally reduced in available P (avP) by 0.1% and calcium (Ca) by 0.2% vs. PC (NC1) or moderately reduced by 0.15 and 0.3% vs. PC (NC2), respectively, and four further diets comprising the NC1 and NC2 supplemented with 500 or 1000 FTU/kg of phytase in starter and finisher phases. A constant Ca to avP ratio was maintained across all diets. The body weight gain (BWG) and feed per unit gain (FCR) of birds fed NC1 and NC2 diets supplemented with phytase (500 and 1000 U/kg) was equivalent to that of birds fed the PC diet at 35 days. Phytase supplementation in the NC1 diet linearly increased the CAID of nitrogen (N) (p < 0.01), phosphorus (P) (p < 0.01), and Ca (p < 0.05). Additionally, phytase reduced (p < 0.01) excreta P concentration by approximately 27%, improved (p < 0.001) toe ash, and tended to increase tibia ash (p = 0.08), comparable with the PC. In conclusion, the addition of bacterial 6-phytase dosed in the range of 500-1000 FTU/kg was effective in replacing 1.5 g/kg avP and 3 g/kg Ca in broilers fed pelleted diets, using bone quality, BWG, and FCR as outcome measures.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to determine the digestible calcium (Ca) and digestible phosphorous (P) requirements of 25 to 35-day-old broiler chickens. Fifteen corn-soybean meal-based diets containing 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 g/kg standardized ileal digestible (SID) Ca and 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 g/kg SID P were fed to broilers from d 25 to 35 post-hatch. Each experimental diet was randomly allocated to 6 replicate cages (8 birds per cage). Body weight and feed intake were recorded, and the feed conversion ratio was calculated. On d 35, birds were euthanized to collect the ileal digesta, tibia, and carcass for the determination of ileal Ca, and P digestibility, concentrations of ash, Ca, and P in tibia and the retention of Ca and P in the carcass. Titanium dioxide (5.0 g/kg) was included in all diets as an indigestible indicator for the ileal digestibility measurement. Feed intake and total excreta output were measured during the last 4 d of the experimental period for the measurement of apparent total tract retention of Ca and P. Fixed effects of the experiment were dietary concentrations of SID Ca and SID P and their interaction. If the interaction or main effects were significant (P < 0.05), the parameter estimates for second-order response surface model (RSM) were determined using General Linear Model procedure of SAS. The maximum response was not predicted for most of the parameters (including growth performance and tibia) as the Ca effect was linear which indicated that the highest level of Ca employed in the study may have not been high enough. The requirement of dietary SID Ca for maximization of these parameters, therefore, depends on the dietary SID P concentration when the dietary SID Ca is within 2.0 to 4.0 g/kg. However, based on the factorial analysis, the highest weight gain was observed at 3.5 g/kg SID P and 3.5 g/kg SID Ca concentrations. Tibia ash was higher in birds fed 4.5 g/kg SID P and was unaffected by dietary SID Ca concentrations. However, based on overall findings, a combination of 3.5 g/kg SID P and 3.0-3.5 g/kg SID Ca may be recommended for the optimum tibia ash. The recommended SID Ca requirements (at 3.5 g/kg SID P) for weight gain (3.5 g/kg or 6.4 g/kg total Ca) and tibia ash (3.0-3.5 g/kg or 5.5-6.4 g/kg total Ca) are lower than the current Ca recommendations (7.8 g/kg total Ca equivalent to 4.25 g/kg SID Ca; Ross, 2019) for broiler finishers, suggesting possible excess of Ca in diets formulated based on the current recommendation.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to determine the digestible calcium (Ca) and digestible phosphorous (P) requirements of 11 to 24 d old broiler chickens. Eighteen corn-soybean meal-based diets containing 1.80, 2.35, 2.90, 3.45, 4.00, and 4.55 g/kg standardized ileal digestible (SID) Ca and 3.5, 4.5, and 5.5 g/kg SID P were fed to broilers from d 11 to 24. Each experimental diet was randomly allocated to six replicate cages (8 birds per cage). Body weight and feed amount were recorded at the start and end of the experiment and the feed conversion ratio was calculated. On d 24, birds were euthanized to collect ileal digesta, tibia, and carcass for the determination of digestible Ca and P, the concentration of ash, Ca and P in tibia and the retention of Ca and P in the carcass, respectively. Titanium dioxide (5 g/kg) was included in all diets as an indigestible indicator for apparent ileal digestibility measurement. Total excreta output was measured during the last 4 d of the experimental period for the measurement of apparent total tract retention of Ca and P. Fixed effects of the experiment were dietary concentrations of SID Ca and SID P and their interaction. If the interaction or main effect was significant (P < 0.05), the parameter estimate for second-order response surface model was determined using General Linear Model procedure of SAS. The weight gain of broiler growers was optimized at the SID P concentration of 3.5 g/kg and SID Ca concentrations between 2.35 and 4.00 g/kg. At 3.5 g/kg SID P concentration, the required SID Ca for maximum weight gain was determined to be 3.05 g/kg, which corresponded to SID Ca to SID P ratios of 0.87. The concentration of SID Ca that maximized tibia ash at 3.5 g/kg SID P was 3.69 g/kg, which corresponded to SID Ca to SID P ratio of 1.05. Maximizing bone ash requires more Ca than maximizing weight gain. Carcass Ca and P retention were reflective of total tract Ca and P retention values. The estimated SID Ca requirements (at 3.5 g/kg SID P) for both maximized weight gain (3.05 g/kg or 6.11 g/kg total Ca) and bone ash (3.69 g/kg or 7.28 g/kg total Ca) are lower than the current Ca recommendation (8.70 g/kg total Ca equivalent to 4.03 g/kg SID Ca; Ross, 2019) for broiler growers, indicating possible oversupply of Ca in diets formulated based on the current recommendation.

Abstract
Two studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of autoclaving soybean meal (SBM) or poultry meal (PM) on their respective regression-derived phosphorus (P) ileal digestibility and utilization coefficients. On day 19 post hatching 384 or 320 Cobb 500 male broiler chickens were individually weighed and allotted into 6 or 5 treatments in Experiment 1 or 2, respectively. Both experiments consisted of 8 replicate cages with 8 birds per cage in a randomized complete block design. In the first study, 6 diets were formulated with either non-autoclaved or autoclaved soybean meal at 380, 480, or 580 g/kg in a 2 × 3 factorial. The second consisted of 5 diets including one corn-soybean meal and cornstarch based basal diet and 4 diets with 40 or 80 g/kg of non-autoclaved PM or autoclaved PM (APM). Chromic oxide was added as an indigestible index to determine the ileal digestibility and retention of nutrients. Birds received the experimental diets for 3 d and excreta collection was conducted during the last 2 d. At the end of the experiments all birds were euthanized by CO2 asphyxiation and ileal digesta samples were collected. Data were analyzed by ANOVA using the GLM procedure. In both studies autoclaving decreased (P < 0.05) DM digestibility and retention. Increasing the inclusion level of test ingredients caused a linear increase (P < 0.05) in intake of digestible and utilizable P in both studies, and linear reductions in the digestibility and retention of DM and P in the soybean meal study. Inclusion of autoclaved SBM resulted in higher (P < 0.01) ileal digestibility of P and retention of P and Ca. The estimated ileal digestibility of P in SBM, autoclaved SBM, PM and APM were 45, 53.6, 61.2, and 61.2%, respectively, the corresponding retention were 40.6, 45, 51.7, and 59.2%, respectively. Comparison of the regression coefficients revealed that autoclaved SBM tended (P = 0.058) to have higher P digestibility than non-autoclaved while no effect was noted with PM.

Abstract
Simple Summary Low-protein (LP) diets can be potentially used to reduce the excretion of nitrogenous compounds and feed cost in commercial swine production; however, new strategies are required to be developed to improve the growth performance of pigs receiving these diets. Little is known about the effect of phytogenic additives on the performance of pigs fed with LP diets and the underlying factors involved. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of a phytogenic water additive (PWA) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood metabolites, plasma amino acid (AA) concentration, and gut and skeletal muscle AA transporters in nursery pigs fed with LP diets. Supplemental PWA increased the concentration of circulating essential AA, reduced the transcript of some of the AA transporters in the small intestine and skeletal muscle, improved growth performance when the dietary protein was adequate, and increased muscle lean%, but reduced muscle fat% when the dietary protein was deficient. The used PWA in this study had differential effects on blood calcium and its digestibility depending on the level of dietary protein. This study suggests that PWA can be used for improving the meat composition in protein-restricted pigs, but PWA improves growth performance only when dietary protein is adequate. Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a phytogenic water additive (PWA) on growth performance and underlying factors involved in pigs fed with low-protein (LP)/high-carbohydrate diets. Forty-eight weaned barrows were allotted to six treatments for 4 weeks: CON-NS, control (CON) diet-no PWA; CON-LS, CON diet-low dose PWA (4 mL/L); CON-HS, CON diet-high dose PWA (8 mL/L); LP-NS, LP diet-no PWA; LP-LS, LP diet-low dose PWA; LP-HS, LP diet-high dose PWA. Relative to CON-NS, pigs fed with CON-HS had increased average daily gain, body weight and serum calcium (Ca) and phosphorous (P) and had decreased mRNA abundance of solute carrier family 7 member 11 and solute carrier family 6 member 19 in jejunum. Compared to LP-NS, pigs fed with LP-HS had increased muscle lean%, decreased muscle fat%, decreased serum Ca and increased serum P. Compared to their NS counterparts, CON-LS, CON-HS, and LP-LS increased the concentration of plasma essential AA and those fed with CON-HS and LP-HS tended to reduce the abundance of the solute carrier family 7 member 1 transcript in skeletal muscle. Thus, PWA improved the performance of weaned pigs fed with protein-adequate diets likely through increased blood essential AA and affected the muscle composition when dietary protein was deficient.

Abstract
Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of dietary crude protein (CP) level and N-carbamylglutamate (NCG) supplementation on apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) and ileal digestibility of nutrients and digestive enzyme activity of jejunum in growing pigs. In experiment 1, 10 Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire barrows (initial BW: 48.7 kg) were allotted to a three-period switchback design with five experimental diets and two replicate pigs per diet in each period. Diets were categorized as high CP (HP, 18% CP), moderate low CP (MLP, 15% CP), very low CP (VLP, 12% CP), and MLP and VLP with 0.1% NCG supplementation. Feces and urine were collected from day 6 to day 11 after a 5-d adaptation period. The DE, ME, and ATTD of GE, OM, CP, NDF, ADF, and P decreased (P < 0.01) with a reduction of dietary CP, but no effect of dietary treatments on pig daily N retention was detected. The NCG supplementation increased (P < 0.01) DE and ATTD of ADF of the VLP diet. In experiment 2, 10 jejunal-cannulated Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire barrows (initial BW: 44.5 kg) were fed five diets for three periods as experiment 1. Jejunal fluid was collected on days 6 and 8 after a 5-d adaptation period. The digestive enzymes activity was not affected by dietary CP level, except for α-amylase, for which there was a decrease (P < 0.01) in pigs fed VLP diets compared to HP and MLP diets. In experiment 3, 12 ileal-cannulated Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire barrows (initial BW: 46.7 kg) were allotted to a three-period switchback design with six diets and two replicate pigs per diet in each period. The six experimental diets consisted of five experimental diets as experiment 1 and one N-free diet. Ileal digesta was collected from day 6 to day 8 after a 5-d adaptation period. Results indicated that apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of CP and P and ileal digestibility of Arg, His, Ile, Leu, Phe, and all dispensable AA, except Pro, decreased (P < 0.01) in pigs fed VLP diet compared to HP and MLP diets, but AID of GE, OM, EE, NDF, and ADF were not affected. The supplementation of NCG in the VLP diet increased (P < 0.01) the AID of CP and ileal digestibility of Arg, His, Leu, Phe, Val, Ser, and Tyr. In conclusion, reducing dietary CP level decreased nutrient digestibility, but improved the efficiency of dietary N utilization and reduced N emission. Moderate reduction of dietary CP level had a minimal effect on nutrient digestibility and digestive enzyme activity. Additionally, NCG supplementation plays a beneficial effect on nutrient digestion only if the dietary CP level is extremely lowered.

Abstract
Simple Summary To reduce the environmental pollution is a must to preserve the health of the world. The environmental impact of poultry farming is receiving an increasing attention due to several emissions among these is phosphorus. This element is in general present in the commercial diets of broilers or laying hens in an amount exceeding the real needing of the animals, and, therefore, a great amount of phosphorus ends in the excreta. Thus, optimizing the amount of phosphorous in the diets of poultry could partially alleviate the environmental impact of these farms. Abstract A total of 420 day old chicks were divided into seven groups (5 replicates of 12 chicks/group) fed isoproteic and isoenergetic diets. The control group was fed diets containing 0.50%, 0.45% and 0.40% of non-phytic phosphorous (nPP) in starter (1–35), grower (37–56) and finisher (57–64 d) periods, respectively. The three intermediate nPP (IntnPP) groups were fed diets with 0.40%, 0.35% and 0.30% nPP according to the growth period and were submitted to three dietary treatments: unsupplemented; supplemented with 500 FTU/kg diet of an Aspergillus niger phytase (IntnPP_fp) and supplemented with 500 FTU/kg diet of an Escherichia coli phytase (IntnPP_bp). The three low nPP groups fed diets contained 0.30%, 0.25% and 0.20% nPP and were submitted to the same dietary treatments than IntnPP to obtain LnPP, LnPP_fp and LnPP_bp groups. IntnPP and LnPP groups had lower body weight gain and feed, crude protein (CP) and metabolizable energy (ME) intake (p < 0.05) than the control. Feed conversion ratio of IntnPP was more favorable (p < 0.01) than the LnPP group. CP and ME conversion ratios worsened (p < 0.01) in IntnPP and LnPP groups in comparison to the control. The nPP conversion ratio improved (p < 0.01) from the control to the LnPP group. Fungal phytase reduced (p < 0.05) feed, CP, ME and nPP intake than the bacterial one. IntnPP and LnPP diets had a lower digestibility of CP (p < 0.01) and CF (p = 0.01) than the control. IntnPP and LnPP groups showed a higher (p < 0.05) economic efficiency than the control. Blood total protein was the lowest (p < 0.05) in the LnPP group, the control group showed the lowest (p < 0.05) level of albumin and IntnPP group had the lowest (p < 0.01) globulin level. The use of bacterial phytase increased (p < 0.01) total protein and globulin and decreased (p < 0.05) the plasma cholesterol in comparison to fungal phytase. Decreasing nPP levels in colored slow-growing broilers diet negatively affects growth performance and the use of phytase can partly alleviate these negative effects, but the efficiency of different enzyme sources (bacterial or fungal) was tied to the dietary nPP levels.

Abstract
The availability of plant phosphorus in the gut chicken can be improved by increasing phosphorus retention using phytase enzyme or a probiotic with phytase activity as an alternative. In this study, the efficacy of a recombinant probiotic, Lactococcus lactis (L. lactis), with a potential of phytase production was evaluated in broiler chickens. To this aim, 360 one-day-old male broiler Cobb 500 were divided into six treatments with six replicates and reared to 42 days of age. The experimental treatments included positive control diet containing adequate phosphorus (PC), negative control diet containing reduced available phosphorus (NC), negative control diet involving recombinant L. lactis (RLL), negative control diet containing both recombinant L. lactis and Lactobacillus salivarius (RLL + LBS), negative control diet including non-recombinant L. lactis (LL) and negative control diet containing Hostazym® . Growth performance, total tract apparent disappearance of phytate-P and nutrient retention, mineral content of the tibia and histomorphology of jejunum were evaluated at the age of 35 days. Based on the results, the phosphorus (P) deficiency in the diet reduced body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), length and strength of tibia and increased feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to PC group. However, the supplementation of Hostazym® or RLL probiotic into the feed improved BW, ADG, FCR, disappearance of Phytate-P and retention of P, length and strength of the tibia in a level similar to PC treatment. Phosphorus content of tibia in the chickens fed P-deficient diets containing RLL was similar to that of the tibia in the control group. Excreta phytate and total P excretion of the chickens decreased when diets contained Hostazym® , RLL and RLL + LBS. In addition, the diet containing RLL + LBS probiotic increased villi height compared with other treatments (p < .05). Further, recombinant L. lactis could represent phytase activity in the gut environment of the chickens and could be an alternative to the commercial phytase.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to examine the effect of 2 phosphorus (P) sources on broiler performance to day 14. The P bioavailability was estimated using bird performance and tibia ash measurements, whereas P digestibility, intestinal P transporter, kidney vitamin D-1α-hydroxylase, and vitamin D-24-hydroxylase mRNA abundances were also determined. Slope regression analysis was used to determine the bioavailability of dicalcium phosphate (Dical P) and nanocalcium phosphate (Nano P) with dietary available P (AvP) set to 0.20% P (control) using AvP from the major ingredients and Dical P. The experimental treatments were achieved by supplementation with either Dical P or Nano P to generate 0.24, 0.28, 0.32, and 0.36% AvP. A total of 648-day-old unsexed broiler chicks were divided into 72 birds per treatment (8 replicate cages of 9 birds). Slope regression analysis showed positive linear relationships between BW, feed intake (FI), tibia ash weight (TAW), and tibia ash percentage (TAP) with dietary Dical P and Nano P levels. Comparisons between regression slopes for Dical P and Nano P fed birds were not significantly different for BW, feed intake, tibia ash weight, and tibia ash percentage, indicating similar P bioavailability from Dical P and Nano P. There were interactions between P source and AvP for feed efficiency (FE) and apparent ileal P digestibility (AIPD). Dicalcium phosphate had greater FE than Nano P at 0.28% AvP and greater AIPD than Nano P at 0.24% AvP. The addition of AvP from Dical P and Nano P resulted in reduced sodium phosphate cotransporter mRNA abundance in the duodenum in a dose–dependent response. In the kidney, vitamin D-1α-hydroxylase mRNA abundance was greater at 0.36% Nano P compared with control, but there was no difference with Dical P. There was no difference in vitamin D-24-hydroxylase mRNA abundance between control and supplementation with Nano P or Dical P. In conclusion, Nano P and Dical P had the same bioavailability but had different effects on gene expression.

Abstract
Calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) are essential minerals involved in many biological processes including bone development and mineralization. Plasma concentration of both minerals is tightly regulated, and Ca and P homeostasis is maintained via intestinal absorption, bone storage and exchange, and renal reabsorption. In the current broiler production systems, chicks are deprived of food and water for up to 72 h due to uneven hatching, hatchery procedures, and transportation time to farms. Post-hatch (PH) feed delay results in lower body and organ weight, higher feed conversion ratio and mortality, and delayed PH growth and GIT development. Little is known about the effects of early neonatal development and delayed or immediate feeding PH on Ca and P transporters. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to characterize expression patterns of Ca and P transporter genes in small intestine during the first 2 wk PH in chickens fed immediately after hatch (FED) or subjected to 48 h delayed feeding (NOTFED). Expression of all Ca and P transporters in jejunum and ileum was significantly (P < 0.05) affected by age. Among Ca transporter genes, only mRNA expression of Calbidin D28k in jejunum and Ca sensing receptor (CaSR) in ileum were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by delay in feed access. For P transporter genes' expression, only P transporter type III (PIT1) mRNA was significantly affected by age, delay in feed access, and their interaction (P < 0.05). In summary, we have shown, for the first time, early developmental changes of Ca and P transporter genes in broiler chickens. Results suggest that an increase in gene expression of some of the transporters corresponds with the switch from yolk to high starch diet. Overall, our results can be helpful in better understanding of Ca and P homeostasis in broilers.

Abstract
SUMMARY Birds show poor utilization of phytic phosphorus in their diets because of the lack of endogenous enzymes to digest phosphorus and make it bioavailable. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate phytase supplementation in the diets of laying quails. Eighty quails were used in a completely randomized experimental design with five treatments and four replicates of four birds each. The treatments were as follows: 0.35% Pd; 0.20% Pd; 0.20% Pd + 500FTUs of phytase; 0.09% Pd; 0.09% Pd + 500 FTUs of phytase. The birds were housed in metallic batteries during a trial period of 21 days, for evaluation of egg production, egg weight, feed intake and feed conversion. After being collected, the eggs were sent to the nutrition laboratory of the department of zootechnics of the CEO/Udesc, where analyses of albumin, yolk and shell quality were performed. The results were subjected to analysis of variance, and the differences between the averages were compared using the Tukey test at 5% of significance. No differences (P> 0.05) were observed in terms of performance and egg quality parameters. We conclude that the inclusion of phytase in the diet of laying quails can be accomplished without compromising the performance and quality of the eggs. Additionally, 0.09% of 22 disponible phosphorus can be used to grant adequate performance for 21 days.

Abstract
Recent years have witnessed the great advantages of reducing dietary crude protein (CP) with free amino acids (AA) supplementation for sustainable swine industry, including saving protein ingredients, reducing nitrogen excretion, feed costs and the risk of gut disorders without impairing growth performance compared to traditional diets. However, a tendency toward increased fatness is a matter of concern when pigs are fed low-protein (LP) diets. In response, the use of the net energy system and balanced AA for formulation of LP diets has been proposed as a solution. Moreover, the extent to which dietary CP can be reduced is complicated. Meanwhile, the requirements for the first five limiting AA (lysine, threonine, sulfur-containing AA, tryptophan, and valine) that growing-finishing pigs fed LP diets were higher than pigs fed traditional diets, because the need for nitrogen for endogenous synthesis of non-essential AA to support protein synthesis may be increased when dietary CP is lowered. Overall, to address these concerns and give a better understanding of this nutritional strategy, this paper reviews recent advances in the study of LP diets for swine and provides some insights into future research directions.

Abstract
The transport of calcium and phosphorus is mainly relied on their corresponding transporters. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of dietary phosphorus level on the expression of the relevant calcium and phosphorus transporters in laying hens, which has a large amount of calcium and phosphorus input from intestine and output from kidney and eggshell gland. Thirty-six 25-week-old Hy-line Brown hens were fed diets with different available phosphorus level (AP, 0.15, 0.41, and 0.82%), respectively. The expression of phosphorus transporters type IIa and type IIb Na/Pi co-transporter (NPt2a, NPt2b), calcium transporter calbindin-D28k (CaBP-D28k), and plasma membrane Ca ATPase 1b (PMCA1b) were measured in small intestine, kidney, and eggshell gland by RT-PCR and western blot. The results showed that serum calcitriol and PTH concentrations were not affected (P > 0.05) by dietary AP levels. Duodenum had the highest mRNA and protein expression level of NPt2b than jejunum and ileum (P < 0.05). The protein expression abundance of CaBP-D28k and PMCA1b were higher in duodenum than that in jejunum and ileum (P < 0.05). 0.15%-AP diet upregulated the ileal mRNA expression level of NPt2b and renal mRNA expression level of NPt2a (P < 0.05), while downregulated the protein abundance of NPt2b and CaBP-D28k mRNA expression in shell gland (P < 0.05). In conclusion, both the Ca and P transporters were highly expressed in duodenum. Low AP diet decreased protein expression abundance of NPt2b in duodenum while upregulated the mRNA expression level of NPt2a in kidney. The result suggests that both the phosphorus absorption in proximal intestine and its reabsorption in kidney are involved in the adaption to low AP diet.

Abstract
1α-Hydroxycholecalciferol (1α-OH-D3) is a vitamin D derivative. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of 1α-OH-D3 on the growth and the mRNA expression of vitamin D receptor (VDR) in the small intestine and kidney of chickens. A total of 240 males of one-day-old Ross 308 broilers was randomly assigned to 4 treatments with 5 replicates of 12 birds per replicate. Three levels of 1α-OH-D3 (1.25, 2.5, and 5 μg/kg) were added to a basal diet containing 0.50% calcium (Ca), 0.25% non-phytate phosphorus (NPP), and without supplemental cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). The control diet contained 1.00% Ca, 0.45% NPP, and 25 μg/kg cholecalciferol. Dietary 1α-OH-D3 levels linearly improved the average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), femur and tibia mineralization, and plasma Ca concentration, and retained Ca and total phosphorus (tP) amounts in broilers from 1 to 21 d of age (P < 0.05). In addition, 1α-OH-D3 also linearly up-regulated the mRNA expression levels of VDR in the duodenum as well as those of VDR and sodium-phosphate cotransporter NaPi-IIa and NaPi-IIc in the kidney of broilers (P < 0.05). However, 1α-OH-D3 did not affect the mRNA levels of 25-hydroxylase in the liver or NaPi-IIb in the duodenum (P > 0.05). No differences were observed in the ADFI, ADG, bone length, plasma mineral concentration, retained tP amount, or the mRNA levels of the above genes (except for VDR in the kidney) between the birds fed the diet with 5 μg/kg 1α-OH-D3 and the birds fed the control diet (P > 0.05). By contrast, the weight, ash weight, ash percentage, and Ca percentage of the bone, retained Ca amount, and the mRNA level of VDR in the kidney were lower in the birds fed the diet with 5 μg/kg 1α-OH-D3 than in the birds fed the control diet (P < 0.05). These data indicate that 1α-OH-D3 up-regulates the gene expression of VDR in the small intestine and kidney at the transcriptional level, thereby improving the growth performance and bone mineralization of broiler chickens from 1 to 21 d of age.

Abstract
Sound feed formulation is dependent upon precise evaluation of energy and nutrients values in feed ingredients. Hence the methodology to determine the digestibility of energy and nutrients in feedstuffs should be chosen carefully before conducting experiments. The direct and difference procedures are widely used to determine the digestibility of energy and nutrients in feedstuffs. The direct procedure is normally considered when the test feedstuff can be formulated as the sole source of the component of interest in the test diet. However, in some cases where test ingredients can only be formulated to replace a portion of the basal diet to provide the component of interest, the difference procedure can be applied to get equally robust values. Based on components of interest, ileal digesta or feces can be collected, and different sample collection processes can be used. For example, for amino acids (AA), to avoid the interference of fermentation in the hind gut, ileal digesta samples are collected to determine the ileal digestibility and simple T-cannula and index method are commonly used techniques for AA digestibility analysis. For energy, phosphorus, and calcium, normally fecal samples will be collected to determine the total tract digestibility, and therefore the total collection method is recommended to obtain more accurate estimates. Concerns with the use of apparent digestibility values include different estimated values from different inclusion level and non-additivity in mixtures of feed ingredients. These concerns can be overcome by using standardized digestibility, or true digestibility, by correcting endogenous losses of components from apparent digestibility values. In this review, methodologies used to determine energy and nutrients digestibility in pigs are discussed. It is suggested that the methodology should be carefully selected based on the component of interest, feed ingredients, and available experimental facilities.

Abstract
A study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary CP levels on ileal P digestion in growing pigs. A total of 18 ileal-cannulated pigs (44.2 ± 3.2 kg initial BW) were used in a duplicated 9 × 3 incomplete Latin square design, with 9 treatments and three 7-d experimental periods giving 6 replicates per treatment. The 9 treatments consisted of 1 N-free diet to estimate basal endogenous loss of AA and 8 corn-soybean meal-based diets in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement, which included 2 CP levels (6.9 or 13.4%) and 4 apparent total tract digestible P (ATTDP) levels (0.09, 0.16, 0.24, or 0.32%). Soybean meal and monocalcium phosphate were used to adjust the CP level and ATTDP level, respectively. Limestone was included in diets to maintain a Ca:ATTDP ratio of 2.5 across treatments. Ileal digesta was continuously collected for 10 h on the last 2 d of each 7-d experimental period. The ileal digesta samples were lyophilized and analyzed to calculate ileal digested N and P. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED of SAS (9.3) and contrasts were used to test the linear and quadratic effects of increasing levels of P within each CP level. In the low-CP group (6.9%), the ileal digested P was 0.71, 1.16, 1.64, and 2.03 g/kg DMI for diets that contained 0.09, 0.16, 0.24, and 0.32% ATTDP, respectively, and was 0.70, 1.54, 2.03, and 1.99 g/kg DMI, respectively, for their counterparts in the high-CP group (13.4%). A low dietary CP level decreased ( < 0.05) ileal digested P (g/kg DMI). The ileal digested P (g/kg DMI) linearly increased ( < 0.01) with increasing ATTDP levels in the low-CP group, but the pattern was linear ( < 0.01) and quadratic ( < 0.01) in the high-CP group. In the low- and high-CP diets, the determined true ileal digestibility of P in monocalcium phosphate was 54.4 and 75.6%, respectively. In conclusion, this research indicated that the ileal digestion of P could be limited by protein deficiency. The dietary CP level should be considered in P digestibility-related studies.
