Abstract
Maintenance of calcium and phosphorus homeostasis in laying hens is crucial for preservation of skeletal integrity and eggshell quality, though physiological regulation of these systems is incompletely defined. To investigate changes in mineral and vitamin D3 homeostasis during the 24-h egg formation cycle, 32-wk-old commercial laying hens were sampled at 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 12, 15, 18, 21, 23, and 24 h post-oviposition (HPOP; n ≥ 4). Ovum location and egg calcification stage were recorded, and blood chemistry, plasma vitamin D3 metabolites, circulating parathyroid hormone (PTH), and expression of genes mediating uptake and utilization of calcium and phosphorus were evaluated. Elevated levels of renal 25-hydroxylase from 12 to 23 HPOP suggest this tissue might play a role in vitamin D3 25-hydroxylation during eggshell calcification. In shell gland, retinoid-x-receptor gamma upregulation between 6 and 8 HPOP followed by subsequently increased vitamin D receptor indicate that vitamin D3 signaling is important for eggshell calcification. Increased expression of PTH, calcitonin, and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) receptors in the shell gland between 18 and 24 HPOP suggest elevated sensitivity to these hormones toward the end of eggshell calcification. Shell gland sodium-calcium exchanger 1 was upregulated between 4 and 7 HPOP and plasma membrane calcium ATPase 1 increased throughout eggshell calcification, suggesting the primary calcium transporter may differ according to eggshell calcification stage. Expression in shell gland further indicated that bicarbonate synthesis precedes transport, where genes peaked at 6 to 7 and 12 to 18 HPOP, respectively. Inorganic phosphorus transporter 1 (PiT-1) expression peaked in kidney between 12 and 15 HPOP, likely to excrete excess circulating phosphorus, and in shell gland between 18 and 21 HPOP. Upregulation of FGF23 receptors and PiT-1 during late eggshell calcification suggest shell gland phosphorus uptake is important at this time. Together, these findings identified potentially novel hormonal pathways involved in calcium and phosphorus homeostasis along with associated circadian patterns in gene expression that can be used to devise strategies aimed at improving eggshell and skeletal strength in laying hens.

Abstract
Limestone is used in poultry diets as a calcium (Ca) source. Feed formulation is often based on an estimate of limestone Ca content or, less frequently, wet chemistry analysis. However, limestone composition may vary, which has not previously been studied on a large scale. In this study, 641 limestone samples supplied to poultry feed mills in 40 countries across eight global regions were collected and analysed for macro- and micromineral content, particle size (geometric mean diameter, GMD), and in vitro solubility. Mean Ca content of fine limestone (GMD<1000 μm, n=566) was 37.8% (range 33.3-39.7%) and for coarse limestone (GMD>1000 μm, n=75) was 38.0% (range 34.7-40.0%). There was marked variation among and within regions in the concentration of other macro minerals and microminerals. Particle size (GMD) of fine limestone was 288 μm (range 37.7-991.9 μm) and 1,689 mm for coarse limestone (range 301.6-3,067.9 μm). In vitro solubility of fine limestone (5 min incubation, pH=3.0) was 68.4% (range 18.8 to 99.4%). Particle size only explained 52% of the variation in 5 min incubation solubility (R2=0.52). For coarse limestone, mean solubility (30 min incubation) was 65.5% (range 23.2-96%) which was not correlated (R2=0.09) with particle size. Particle size and solubility rate of limestone have been shown to alter Ca and phosphorus utilisation in broilers and laying hens. Hence, better understanding of variation in mineral analysis, particle size and solubility rate would enable more accurate feed inclusion and subsequently digestibility to support health and performance.

Abstract
Knowledge of gut microbiology of poultry has advanced from a limited ability to culture relatively few microbial species, to attempting to understand the complex interactions between the bird and its microbiome. The Informal Nutrition Symposium 2021 was intended to help poultry scientists to make sense of the implications of the vast amounts of information being generated by researchers. This paper represents a compilation of the talks given at the symposium by leading international researchers in this field. The symposium began with an overview of the historical developments in the field of intestinal microbiology and microbiome research in poultry. Next, the systemic effects of the microbiome on health in the context of the interplay between the intestinal microbiota and the immune system were presented. Because the microbiome and the host communicate and influence each other, the novel field of kinomics (the study of protein phosphorylation) as used in the study of the poultry microbiome was discussed. Protein phosphorylation is a rapid response to the complex of signals among the microbiome, intestinal lumen metabolites, and the host. Then, a description of why an understanding of the role of microbial endocrinology in poultry production can lead to new understanding of the mechanisms by which the gut microbiota and the host can interact in defined mechanisms that ultimately determine health, pathogenesis of infectious disease, and behavior was given. Finally, a view forward was presented underscoring the importance of understanding mechanisms in microbiomes in other organ systems and other species. Additionally, the importance of the development of new -omics platforms and data management tools to more completely understand host microbiomes was stressed.

Abstract
The use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) has historically been the most important prophylactic strategy for the control of Necrotic Enteritis (NE) caused by some Clostridium perfringens toxin types in poultry. During the last five decades, AGPs have also been supplemented in feed to improve body weight gain and feed efficiency as well as to modulate the microbiome (consisting of microbes and their genes both beneficial and potentially harmful) and reduce enteric pathogens, among other benefits. New regulatory requirements and consumer preferences have led to strong interest in natural alternatives to the AGPs for the prevention and control of illnesses caused by enteric pathogens. This interest is not just focused on the direct removal or inhibition of the causative microorganisms but also the improvement of intestinal health and homeostasis using a range of feed additives. A group of promising feed additives is short- and medium-chain fatty acids (SCFA and MCFA, respectively) and their derivatives. The use of SCFA and MCFA, including butyric, caproic, caprylic, capric, and lauric acids, has shown strong effects against NE in broilers both at experimental and commercial levels. These fatty acids also benefit intestinal health integrity and homeostasis. Other effects have also been documented, including increases in intestinal angiogenesis and gene expression of tight junctions. Chemical modifications to improve stability and point of release in the intestine have been shown to improve the efficacy of SCFA and MCFA and their derivatives. The aim of this review is to give an overview of SCFA, MCFA and their derivatives, as an alternative to replace AGPs to control the incidence and severity of NE in poultry.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate potential hormonal mechanisms associated with the stress response, thermoregulation, and metabolic changes of broiler chickens exposed to high environmental temperature. Nine hundred 1-day-old male broiler chicks (Ross 708) were placed in floor pens and raised to 24 d. At 24 d, chicks were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments, heat stress (HS) or no HS, and allocated into battery cages in 8 batteries (10 birds per cage, 2 cages per battery). On day 31, blood was collected prior to HS and analyzed using an iSTAT analyzer. Half of the batteries were then moved into 2 rooms with an elevated ambient temperature (35°C) for 8 h. The remaining batteries stayed in the thermoneutral rooms with an ambient temperature of 22°C. Beginning at 5 h after the initiation of HS, blood was collected and analyzed using an iSTAT analyzer, birds were euthanized, and hypothalamus and pituitary samples were collected (16 birds per treatment), flash frozen, and stored at -80°C until RNA extraction. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR was used to compare mRNA levels of key corticotropic and thyrotrophic genes in the hypothalamus and pituitary. Levels of mRNA for each target gene were normalized to PGK1 (pituitary) and GAPDH (hypothalamus) mRNA. Differences were determined using mixed model ANOVA. HS decreased (P < 0.05) feed intake, BW, bicarbonate, potassium, CO2, and triiodothyronine, while it increased mortality, glucose, pH, plasma thyroxine, and corticosterone. Expression of pituitary corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor 1 was downregulated (P < 0.001), while corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor 2 mRNA levels were higher (P = 0.001) in HS birds. HS increased expression of thyroid hormone receptor β (P = 0.01) (2.8-fold) and thyroid stimulating hormone β (P = 0.009) (1.4-fold). HS did not affect levels of mRNA of genes evaluated in the hypothalamus. Results showed that HS significantly affected both the thyrotropic and corticotropic axes. Understanding the role and regulation of these pathways during HS will allow researchers to better evaluate management strategies to combat HS.

Abstract
Work was carried out to determine the effects of limestone (LM) geometric mean diameter (GMD), phytate, Ca source, and phytase on standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of Ca and P in broilers. Twelve treatments (TRT) were tested. One basal corn and corn germ-based diet was prepared without adding inorganic Ca or P (TRT1, 0.02% Ca). Limestone from the same source (800 or 151 μm GMD) and bone (151 μm GMD) were added to TRT 2–4, (0.7% Ca). TRT5 was a corn/soybean meal (SBM) diet with 800 μm GMD LM (0.77% Ca). Buttiauxella sp. phytase was added (1,000 U/kg) to TRT 1–5 to prepare TRT 6–10, respectively. In addition, 800 or 150 μm GMD LM and monosodium P were added to a nitrogen-Ca-phytate–free diet (TRT 11 and 12, respectively). Treatments were analyzed as a complete block design using SAS mixed procedures and with factorial analysis on subsets of data: 1) LM GMD (151 vs. 800 μm GMD) with or without phytase: TRT 2, 3, 7, and 8; 2) phytate (corn or corn-free) with the same LM at 2 different sizes: TRT 2, 3, 11, and 12; 3) Ca source (LM vs. bone) with or without phytase: TRT 2, 4, 6, 8, and 9; 4) phytate source (corn vs. corn/SBM) with or without phytase: TRT 2, 5, 7, and 10. Broilers (4/pen) were fed mash diets ad lib for 36 h (20–22 d of age). At the end of the trial, distal ileal digesta were collected. Fine LM had lower SID Ca (38.09%) vs. coarse LM (49.18%), irrespective of phytase (P < 0.05). Standardized ileal digestibility of P was lower when the smaller LM was used vs. coarse LM with either 0 or 1,000 phytase U/kg (P < 0.05). Both SID Ca and P were higher without phytate vs. when phytate from corn was present (P < 0.05). Ca from bone was more digestible and its impact on SID P smaller vs. LM regardless of phytase (P < 0.05). In addition, phytate from SBM was more digestible and responsive to phytase as compared to phytate from corn (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary factors affected Ca and P digestibility and their response to phytase inclusion.

Abstract
Work was done to modify a limestone solubility assay to improve predictions of in vivo apparent ileal digestibility of Ca (AID Ca) in broilers and impacts on AID P. Limestones (LIME) were obtained from 3 commercial sources. LIME-1 (0.633 mm mean diameter, GMD); LIME-2 (ground sub-sample of LIME-1, GMD = 0.063 mm); LIME-3 (GMD = 0.326 mm), and LIME-4 (GMD = 0.831 mm). Solubility was determined at 5, 15, and 30 min of incubation using either a 0.2 N HCl (S1) or a pH 3 HCl (pH = 0.26) solution buffered with 3 M glycine (S2) to mimic gizzard and proventriculus pH. An AID trial was conducted with 320 Ross 708 male broilers. Treatments (Trt) were no added LIME, or added LIME-1, 2, 3, and 4 to achieve 0.67% Ca, to a basal diet (no added inorganic P, 0.07% Ca) with or without 1,000 U phytase/kg (36 h, 23 to 24 D of age, n = 8, 4 birds/n). Distal ileal digesta was collected from all birds and pooled by pen. Irrespective of interaction, LIME solubilized quicker and more completely with S1 vs. S2 at all time points (P < 0.05). LIME-2 solubilized the quickest, while LIME-3 had the lowest solubility through all incubation times (P < 0.05). The AID Ca was 66.30, 47.46, 19.93, and 66.33% for LIME-1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively (0 U/kg, P < 0.05). Phytase inclusion increased AID Ca by 15% on average (P < 0.05). The AID P dig was highest in no LIME added diet (74.91%) and adding LIME reduced (P < 0.05) AID P to 23.14, 12.78, 65.47, and 37.40%, for LIME-1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively in the absence of phytase. Regression showed that GMD, 15- and 30-min solubility were critical for AID Ca (R2 between 0.978 and 0.988). In conclusion, the solubility dynamics including speed and extend of solubilization, rather than a single timepoint, yield better predictions for in vivo Ca digestibility of LIME.

Abstract
Calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) are essential minerals involved in many biological processes including bone development and mineralization. Plasma concentration of both minerals is tightly regulated, and Ca and P homeostasis is maintained via intestinal absorption, bone storage and exchange, and renal reabsorption. In the current broiler production systems, chicks are deprived of food and water for up to 72 h due to uneven hatching, hatchery procedures, and transportation time to farms. Post-hatch (PH) feed delay results in lower body and organ weight, higher feed conversion ratio and mortality, and delayed PH growth and GIT development. Little is known about the effects of early neonatal development and delayed or immediate feeding PH on Ca and P transporters. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to characterize expression patterns of Ca and P transporter genes in small intestine during the first 2 wk PH in chickens fed immediately after hatch (FED) or subjected to 48 h delayed feeding (NOTFED). Expression of all Ca and P transporters in jejunum and ileum was significantly (P < 0.05) affected by age. Among Ca transporter genes, only mRNA expression of Calbidin D28k in jejunum and Ca sensing receptor (CaSR) in ileum were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by delay in feed access. For P transporter genes' expression, only P transporter type III (PIT1) mRNA was significantly affected by age, delay in feed access, and their interaction (P < 0.05). In summary, we have shown, for the first time, early developmental changes of Ca and P transporter genes in broiler chickens. Results suggest that an increase in gene expression of some of the transporters corresponds with the switch from yolk to high starch diet. Overall, our results can be helpful in better understanding of Ca and P homeostasis in broilers.

Abstract
The present study evaluated the effects of limestone particle size and Ca concentration on apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of P and Ca in the presence or absence of a 6-phytase derived from Buttiauxella sp., expressed in Trichoderma. Treatment diets were corn-soybean meal (SBM) based with no added inorganic Ca or P. The design consisted of a factorial arrangement of 2 particle sizes of limestone from the same source (mean particle size: pulverized, PUV < 75 μm; particulate, PAR = 402 μm); 3 Ca (0.6, 0.8, and 1.0%) and 2 phytase levels (0 and 1,000 (FTU)/kg) plus the corn-SBM basal diet with no added Ca (0.14% Ca), resulting a total of 13 treatments (Trts, n = 9, 3 birds/n). Starting at 27 d of age, broilers were fed the mash diets for 32 h, then sampled for gizzard pH and distal ileal digestibility. Gizzard pH was 1.94 in birds fed diet without added Ca and was similar to those fed diet with PAR limestone regardless of phytase. Gizzard pH was increased in birds fed PUV limestone diets irrespectively of phytase inclusion compared to birds fed 0.14% Ca (P < 0.05), except in birds fed 0.60% Ca diet. In the absence of phytase, AID P was reduced as a result of increases in limestone inclusion (P < 0.05), with a greater effect seen in PUV as compared to PAR limestone. The AID Ca in birds fed PUV limestone diets was lower than that of those fed PAR limestone diets (22.1% vs. 28.2%; P < 0.05). In the presence of phytase, the AID P was not affected by increasing Ca concentration when PAR limestone was used as the Ca source (average = 64.3%), whereas AID P decreased from 66.9% (0.6% Ca) to 51.0% (1.0% Ca) when PUV limestone was used as the Ca source (P < 0.05). In summary, impact of Ca concentration on AID Ca and P was dependent on limestone particle size and phytase inclusion.

Abstract
A total of 720 straight-run Heritage 56 M × fast feathering Cobb 500F broiler chickens was fed from 11 to 13 d of age to determine the impacts of dietary calcium (Ca), phytate phosphorus (PP), and phytase concentrations on inositol phosphate (IP3-6) profile in different digestive tract (GI) segments. The experiment was a 2 × 2 × 3 randomized block design with 2 Ca (0.7 and 1.0%) and 2 PP (0.23 and 0.34%) concentrations and 3 doses of Buttiauxella sp. phytase (0, 500, and 1,000 FTU/kg). The experiment was replicated in time (block) with 3 replicates per treatment (Trt) of 10 birds per block. Concentrations of IP3-6 in the crop, proventriculus (Prov) plus (+) gizzard (Giz), and distal ileum, as well as the ileal IP6 and P disappearance were determined at 13 d of age. The detrimental impact of Ca on IP6 and P disappearance was observed only in the ileum, where 11% reduction in both IP6 and P disappearance was seen when Ca increased from 0.7 to 1.0% (P < 0.05). Higher IP5 and IP6 concentrations were seen in both the crop and Prov+Giz at 0.34% PP as compared to birds fed to 0.23% PP diets, regardless of Ca or phytase (P < 0.05), whereas IP3 and IP4 concentrations were not affected by PP (P > 0.05). Inclusion of phytase, at both 500 and 1,000 FTU/kg, resulted in lower IP6 and the accumulation of lower IP ester (IP3-5) concentrations in all GI segments (P < 0.05). Improved IP6 and P disappearance was seen as a result of phytase inclusion, despite the degree of improvement affected by PP (P < 0.05). On average, 5.5 and 6.7 times improvement in IP6 was observed with 500 and 1,000 FTU phytase/kg inclusion, respectively, resulting in 41 and 64% greater P digestibility, respectively. In conclusion, phytase can effectively degrade IP6 to lower esters and increase P utilization. However, the efficacy of phytase can be affected by diet Ca and PP concentrations.

Abstract
The objective of this ring test was to investigate the prececal phosphorus (P) digestibility of soybean meal (SBM) in broiler chickens using the trial protocol proposed by the World's Poultry Science Association. It was hypothesized that prececal P digestibility of SBM determined in the collaborating stations is similar. Three diets with different inclusion levels of SBM were mixed in a feed mill specialized in experimental diets and transported to 17 collaborating stations. Broiler chicks were raised on commercial starter diets according to station-specific management routine. Then they were fed the experimental diets for a minimum of 5 d before content of the posterior half of the ileum was collected. A minimum of 6 experimental replicates per diet was used in each station. All diets and digesta samples were analyzed in the same laboratory. Diet, station, and their interaction significantly affected (P < 0.05) the prececal digestibility values of P and calcium of the diets. The prececal P digestibility of SBM was determined by linear regression and varied among stations from 19 to 51%, with significant differences among stations. In a subset of 4 stations, the prececal disappearance of myo-inositol 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakis (dihydrogen phosphate)-P; InsP6-P) also was studied. The prececal InsP6-P disappearance correlated well with the prececal P digestibility. We hypothesized that factors influencing InsP6 hydrolysis were main contributors to the variation in prececal P digestibility among stations. These factors were probably related to the feeding and housing conditions (floor pens or cages) of the birds in the pre-experimental phase. Therefore, we suggest that the World's Poultry Science Association protocol for the determination of digestible P be should extended to the standardization of the pre-experimental period. We also suggest that comparisons of P digestibility measurements among studies are made only with great caution until the protocol is more refined.

A total of 1,440 straight-run Heritage 56M × fast-feathering Cobb 500F broiler birds were fed from 11 to 13 d of age to determine the impacts of calcium (Ca), phytate phosphorus (PP), nonphytate P (NPP) and phytase concentrations on the myo-inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6) flow through the different parts of gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The experiment was a 2×2×2×3 randomized block design with 2 Ca (0.7 and 1.0%), 2 PP (0.23 and 0.34%), 2 nPP (0.28 and 0.45%) and 3 phytase (0-, 500-, and 1,000-phytase unit (FTU)/kg) concentrations. The experiment was replicated twice (block) with 3 replicates per treatment (TRT) of 10 birds per block. Concentration of IP6 in crop, proventriculus (PROV) plus (+) gizzard (GIZ) and distal ileum digesta as well as the ileal IP6 disappearance was determined at 13 d of age. In crop, higher IP6 concentration was seen with increased Ca (P < 0.05). Despite the interaction between PP and phytase, higher dietary PP led to greater IP6 concentration (P < 0.05). Similar main effects of PP and phytase were also seen in Prov+Giz and ileum (P < 0.05) without interactions. Interaction between Ca and nPP on IP6 concentration was seen in Prov+Giz (P < 0.05). Decreased ileal IP6 disappearance was found at higher Ca (62.3% at 0.7% Ca vs. 57.5% at 1.0% Ca; P < 0.05). In general, adding phytase improved IP6 degradation but the degree of impact was dependent on nPP and PP (P < 0.05). In conclusion, phytase inclusion significantly reduced IP6 concentration and IP6 disappearance in distal ileum regardless of GIT segments or diet composition, but impacts of dietary Ca, nPP, and PP differed depending on GIT segment examined.

Abstract
A total of 1,152 straight-run hatchling Heritage 56M×fast feathering Cobb 500F broiler birds were used to determine Ca, age, and adaptation effects on apparent ileal digestibility of crude protein (AID of CP), amino acids (AID of AA) and phytase efficacy. Twelve treatments with 8 replicates, each were fed from 7 to 9 d (6 birds per replicate), 7 to 21 d (6 birds per replicate) and 19 to 21 d (3 birds per replicate) d of age. Diets were prepared with 3 Ca (0.65, 0.80, and 0.95%) and 2 non-phytate P, (0.20 and 0.40%) concentrations. A 6-phytase was added at 500 or 1,000 FTU/kg to the 0.20% nPP diet at each Ca concentration. The age and adaptation effects were determined by comparing the responses between birds fed from 7 to 9 and 19 to 21 d of age, 19 to 21, and 7 to 21 d of age, respectively. An age effect was observed regardless of Ca, nPP, or phytase concentration, with older birds (19 to 21 d) having greater apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of amino acids (AA) and CP than younger birds (7 to 9 d; P<0.05). Response to adaptation varied depending on Ca, nPP, and phytase concentrations. Constant lower AID of CP and AA was seen in adapted birds (7 to 21 d) compared to unadapted bird (19 to 21 d) when 0.20% nPP diets were fed at 0.95% Ca concentrations (P<0.05). At 0.40% nPP, there was no effect of adaptation on AID of CP and AA at any Ca concentration. Phytase efficacy was significantly lower in younger (7 to 9 d) compared to older birds (19 to 21 d; P<0.05), except at 0.65% Ca. Phytase inclusion increased AID of CP and AA regardless of Ca (P<0.05). In conclusion, the AID of CP and AA can be affected by diet, age, and adaptation.

Abstract
A possible solution for the global warming problem consists of scattering the solar radiation by a cloud of screens, placed near the inner Lagrange point (L1), between the sun and the earth. The thin film material for such a screen should have a high longevity in space environment, low areal density, high on-axis scattering, very low integral reflectivity over the whole solar spectrum, and good handling properties such as foldability and robustness. We report on experimental fabrication of free-standing robust nitride films satisfying to most optical and mechanical requirements for such a screen.

Abstract
A study was done to determine whether broilers can regulate Ca intake when limestone is provided separately or mixed with a crumbled feed of variable Ca and P content, and the influence of this on performance and apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of Ca and P (AIDP). Twelve crumbled diets were fed from 10 to 20 d of age (8 replicates, 8 broilers/replicate). Diets A to D contained 0.28% nonphytate P (nPP) and 0.27, 0.51, 0.77, and 1.02% Ca, respectively. Diets E to H contained 0.48% nPP and 0.41, 0.51, 0.77, and 1.02% Ca, respectively. A large particle size limestone was mixed manually to the crumbled diet on a daily basis to achieve 1.02% total Ca in diets A to H. Diets I to L had the same Ca and nPP as diets A to D, but limestone was provided in a separate feeder to assess spatial importance of limestone supply. Limestone consumption, provided in a separate feeder, decreased as Ca concentration increased in the crumble diet (P < 0.05). Calcium intake increased as Ca concentration in crumbled diets increased (P < 0.05). Increased tibia ash and decreased AIDP were observed as Ca intake increased (P < 0.05). When limestone was added to diets containing 0.28% nPP postcrumble, Ca intake (6.38 g/bird), tibia ash (717 mg/bone), and AIDP (39.78%) were not affected by crumbled diet Ca concentration or consumed Ca. Broilers fed diets containing 0.48% nPP and limestone mixed with the crumble, Ca intake changed (5.96, 6.93, 6.59, and 6.04 g/bird for crumble diet with 0.41, 0.51, 0.77, and 1.02% Ca, respectively). Increasing Ca concentration in the crumble from 0.41 to 1.02% resulted in greater tibia ash (875 mg/bone) but lower AIDP (P < 0.05), although Ca intake was similar. In conclusion, when large particle size limestone was provided ad libitum, the ability of broilers to select for Ca was not sufficient to meet their requirement when crumble Ca was less than 0.77%. The AIDP was highest in birds fed the 0.27% Ca concentration diet.

Abstract
The use of exogenous enzymes in feeds for poultry has increased dramatically between 1990 and 2013. Today, the use of enzymes is broad, going beyond phytases and β-glucanases and xylanases to include other carbohydrases and proteases as well as lipases. The number of scientific articles and publications related to enzymes in feed clearly shows that this has been an area of intense and broad interest for scientists and nutritionists. However, knowledge of the different substrates available in the feed and how these substrates change depending on feed ingredient selection has not received the same level of attention. Understanding substrates is key to better developing and implementing exogenous enzymes. Of importance today is to potentiate endogenous digestive capabilities and use exogenous enzymes to optimize nutrient digestion and use. Our aim with this symposium was to call attention to the importance of having a more in-depth knowledge about substrates and to fill the large gaps in our current understanding of the digestive processes in poultry.

Abstract
Effects of dietary adipic acid (0 vs. 1%) and corn dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS; 0 vs. 20%) were evaluated on hen performance and egg characteristics from 26 to 34 wk of age. Four isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets were randomly assigned to blocks of 6 consecutive cages (36 cages per diet; 2 hens per cage). On wk 2 and 7 of the experiment, excreta were collected by cage block, mixed, and equally split into 2 containers. Sodium bisulfate (SBS) was spread (8.8 kg/100 m(2)) on the top surface of half of the containers. All containers were stored uncovered for 14 d at room temperature. Excreta pH, DM, and N content were measured on d 0, 7, and 14 of storage. Feed intake (112 g/d per hen), egg production (96.1%), and egg specific gravity (1.079 g/g) were not affected by diet. On excreta collection day, a synergy (P = 0.014) between dietary adipic acid and DDGS was detected, as the lowest excreta pH was obtained with the diet including both adipic acid and DDGS. On d 7 of storage, excreta pH was still reduced by dietary adipic acid (P = 0.046) and DDGS (P < 0.001), but a week later, only dietary DDGS decreased excreta pH (8.91 vs. 9.21; P < 0.001). Whereas dietary adipic acid had no influence on excreta N loss, excreta from hens fed 20% DDGS lost 19.7% more N (P = 0.039) during storage than hens not eating DDGS. Surface amendment of excreta with SBS increased excreta DM content, with the effect being even more marked on d 14 of storage (increase of 6.7 percentage units; P < 0.001), consistently decreased excreta pH during storage (P < 0.001) and reduced N loss by 26.1% for the 14 d of storage period.

Abstract
The objectives of the current study were to evaluate the effect of feeding diets containing 0, 10, or 20% distillers dried grains plus solubles (DDGS) to laying hens (21 to 26 wk of age) on emissions of NH3 and H2S. Hy-Line W-36 hens (n = 640) were allocated randomly to 8 environmental rooms for a 5-wk period (hens in 3 rooms were offered the 10% and 20% DDGS diets each; hens in 2 rooms were offered the 0% DDGS diet). Diets were formulated to contain similar CP levels (18.3%), nonphytate P (0.46%), and Ca (4.2%). On an analyzed basis, the 0, 10, and 20% DDGS diets contained 0.22, 0.27, and 0.42% S. Egg weight (50.9 g), egg production (85%), and feed intake (87.9 g/hen per d) were unaffected by diet (P > 0.05) over the study period. Daily NH3 emissions from hens fed diets containing 0, 10, and 20% DDGS were 105.4, 91.7, and 80.2 mg/g of N consumed, respectively (P < 0.05). Daily H2S emissions from hens fed commercial diets containing 0, 10, and 20% DDGS were 2.6, 2.4, and 1.1 mg/g of S consumed, respectively. Overall, feeding 21- to 26-wk-old laying hens diets containing 20% DDGS decreased daily NH3 emissions by 24% and H2S emissions by 58%. Each hen emitted approximately 280 mg of NH3 and 0.5 mg of H2S daily when fed a control diet containing 18% CP and 0.2% S. The results of this study demonstrate that 20% DDGS derived from ethanol production can be fed to laying hens, resulting in lower emissions of NH3 and H2S with no apparent adverse effects on hen performance.

Abstract
Adding phytase and 25- hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH D(3)) to broiler diets has been shown effective at reducing total P concentrations in broiler litter. This study was conducted to determine the impact of field application of broiler litter from modified diets on P solubility in litter-amended soils and P losses in runoff. Five broiler diets and their resulting litters were evaluated: a high P diet, a low P diet, each of those basal diets with phytase added, and a low P diet with phytase and 25-OH D(3) added. A field study was initiated at two sites with each of the five broiler litters and a commercial P fertilizer (triple superphosphate [TSP]) applied at the same total P rate (150 kg P ha(-1)) and a control where no P was applied. Soil P was monitored over time at two depths (0-5 cm and 0-15 cm) soils were collected in the spring and fall to perform rainfall simulation studies. Broiler litter or TSP application increased soil water-soluble P and Mehlich 3-P concentrations relative to the control, however there were no consistent differences detected between litter treatments. Results from the rainfall simulation experiments indicate that diet modification with phytase or 25-OH D(3) does not increase the potential for P losses in runoff from amended soils relative to traditional diets. Moreover, broiler diet modification to reduce excreted P could be a potentially effective method for reducing watershed scale P surpluses in areas of intensive broiler production, without raising concerns over soluble P losses from litter-amended soils.

Abstract
Retention and excretion of phosphorus and nitrogen were determined for turkeys fed 2 diets at 3 ages, via mass balance based on the nutrient content of consumed feed, carcasses, and litter. The 2 diets consisted of an industry diet (IND) and a low phosphorus + 600 U of phytase/kg (LP) diet. A subsample of birds was weighed and killed at 12, 15, and 18 wk of age for nutrient retention (via whole carcasses) and excretion (via litter). Diet did not affect BW or feed intake from 12 to 18 wk of age. The mass of phosphorus excreted from 0 to 12, 0 to 15, and 0 to 18 wk of age was 37, 46, and 40% greater for birds fed the IND diets compared with birds fed the LP diets. Phosphorus retained as the percentage of phosphorus consumed was greater at 12, 15, and 18 wk for birds fed the LP diets (67.0, 63.8, and 53.8%) than for birds fed the IND diets (47.3, 44.0, and 32.8%). The difference between the mass of phosphorus excreted, as calculated from litter, compared with feed intake minus carcass retention was less than 5% at 18 wk. The nitrogen retained averaged 90.7, 136.7, and 184.2 g/bird, whereas nitrogen excreted averaged 377.6, 620.7, and 921.8 g/bird at 12, 15, and 18 wk of age, respectively. Additionally, with an 18-wk average litter DM of 78.0%, the unaccounted for nitrogen at 18 wk was 427 and 405 g/bird for birds fed the IND and LP diets, respectively (40 and 37% of excreted nitrogen).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The chemokine CXCL12, together with its specific receptor, CXCR4, have been shown to mediate invasiveness and metastatic behaviour in pancreatic cancer cells. The expression of CXC12/CXCR4 has not been previously examined in pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasias (PanIN), the accepted precursor lesions to pancreatic duct cancer. DESIGN In this study we sought to characterise the expression of CXCL12 and CXCR4 during the progression of PanIN using both a murine model and human tissues. RESULTS These studies reveal that both CXCL12 and CXCR4 are expressed in PanIN and that the frequency increases during PanIN progression (0% CXCR4 expression in normal mouse and human ducts vs 100% in mouse PanIN 3 and 77% in human PanIN 3). Next we demonstrate a dose-dependent increase in the proliferation of murine PanIN cells when exposed to CXCL12. Finally, we show that expression of CXCR4 in murine PanIN cells is partially dependent on mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling and that the effect of CXCL12 on PanIN proliferation can be abrogated by an MAPK inhibitor. CONCLUSIONS Together these results demonstrate that CXCL12/CXCR4 expression begins in the pre-invasive stages of pancreatic neoplasia, and suggest that the presence of an autocrine loop that is at least partially regulated by MAPK signalling. Further studies that define the role of CXCR4 signalling in PanIN progression will determine if CXCR4 could serve as a novel target for chemoprevention and early stage therapy in pancreatic cancer.

Abstract
A 2 x 2 factorial experiment was conducted to determine whether diets formulated with 2 (Lys and Met) or 3 (Lys, Met, and Thr) supplemental AA to 100 or 110% of NRC (1994) amino acid (AA) recommendations would affect performance and N excretion of turkey toms. Diets were formulated with corn, soybean meal (SBM), and 6% meat and bone meal. Diets were formulated to maximize SBM inclusion when formulated with 2 supplemental AA, thereby resulting in 2.0, 1.5, 1.4, and 1.0% units more CP than diets containing 3 supplemental AA at 4 to 8, 8 to 12, 12 to 16, and 16 to 20 wk of age, respectively. Each diet was fed to 12 replicate pens of birds with 10 birds per pen. Body weight, feed intake, and feed/gain was not affected by AA formulation or AA supplementation (average 20-wk BW = 20.7 kg). Similarly, the weight of the pectoralis major at 20 wk of age was not different between birds fed different diet regimens. Nitrogen intake was affected by diet with birds fed 100% NRC AA consuming 144 g (7.3%) less N, with $0.48 less feed cost/20-wk tom, than those fed 110% NRC AA. Similarly, birds fed 3 vs. 2 supplemental AA consumed 154 g less feed N (8.4%) with $0.37 less feed cost/20-wk tom to 20 wk of age. These differences in N intake resulted in 0.8 kg more N in litter/pen (7%; P = 0.067) in birds fed 100% NRC AA vs. those fed 110% NRC. Similarly, birds fed 3 vs. 2 supplemental AA had 1.24 less N in litter/pen (10.8%). These data suggest that diets containing AA formulations above NRC (1994) recommendations do not provide any additional performance or pectoralis major yield benefits, yet results in considerable increases in excreted N. In addition, formulation with 3 supplemental AA results in a sizeable reduction in N consumed and excreted.

Abstract
Intestinal absorption and renal resorption play a critical role in overall phosphorus homeostasis in chickens. Using RNase-ligase-mediated rapid amplification of cDNA ends PCR, we obtained a cDNA from the broiler small intestine that encodes a type IIb Na-dependent phosphate transporter. The cDNA has an open reading frame of 2,022 bp and predicts a 674-amino acid protein with a molecular mass of approximately 74 kDa. Prediction of membrane spanning domains based on the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the amino acids suggests 8 transmembrane domains, with both the NH(2) and COOH termini being intracellular. The Na-inorganic phosphate (Pi) IIb cotransporter has relative high homology with other type II Na-Pi cotransporters but low homology with the type I or type III Na-Pi cotransporters. Northern blot analysis demonstrated the presence of a single mRNA transcript present predominantly in the small intestine, with the highest expression in the duodenum, followed by the jejunum and ileum. In situ hybridization indicated that the Na-Pi cotransporter mRNA is expressed throughout the vertical cryptvillus axis of the small intestine. Reduction of P in the diet of chicks from hatch to 4 d of age resulted in a significant induction of Na-Pi cotransporter mRNA expression in the small intestine. Further study is needed to elucidate its physiological role in intestinal phosphate absorption in chickens.

Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of feeding soybean meal (SBM) from low-phytate (LP) or traditional phytate (TP) soybeans on performance and excretions from growing swine. Ninety-six crossbred barrows (initial BW = 18 +/- 0.3 kg) were allocated by BW to 24 pens and fed 1 of 4 treatment diets: TP SBM without supplemental phytase; TP SBM plus 500 phytase units of phytase/kg, as-fed basis [Ronozyme P (CT) 2500; DSM Nutritional Products, Basel, Switzerland]; LP SBM (USDA-ARS breeding line CX1834-1) without supplemental phytase, and LP SBM plus phytase. All diets within a feeding phase were formulated to be isocaloric and have similar available Lys and nonphytin P content. Pens were assigned randomly to treatments at the beginning of each of the 4 feeding phases. An indigestible marker was added to the mash feed. Individual pig weights and fecal samples were collected, and feed disappearance by pen was recorded weekly. No phytase inclusion or SBM source effects were observed for pen ADG, ADFI, or G:F (P > 0.05). Total tract apparent digestibility of DM and OM was not different among treatment groups (P > 0.05). Apparent digestibility of P was greater for pigs fed diets containing the LP SBM (48.9 vs. 42.4%; P < 0.01) and less when diets included phytase (44.3 vs. 47.0%; P < 0.0001). Total P (tP) and water-soluble P (WSP) excreted were affected by dietary treatment (tP: 20.0, 18.0, 16.8, and 13.8 g/kg of feces DM, P < 0.01; and WSP: 10.9, 10.1, 9.1, and 8.5 g/kg, P < 0.01, for TP SBM without supplemental phytase, TP SBM plus 500 phytase units of phytase/kg, LP SBM without supplemental phytase, and LP SBM plus phytase diets, respectively). Inclusion of phytase decreased tP and WSP excreted (P < 0.01), as did use of LP SBM (P < 0.01). Diet effects on the fraction of excreted tP that was WSP were observed (P < 0.01); however, there was not a significant effect of SBM source. Inclusion of exogenous phytase in diets increased the proportion of tP that was excreted as WSP from 55% in diets without phytase to 59% in diets containing phytase. The findings suggest that there is a need for LP soybeans as a dietary component to minimize environmental impacts.

Abstract
Three floor pen experiments (Exp) were conducted to evaluate low nonphytin P (NPP) concentrations and the NPP sparing effect of phytase (PHY) and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25D) on bone mineralization, bone breaking during commercial processing, litter P, and water-soluble P (WSP) concentrations. Tested treatments (TRT) were control, National Research Council NPP; University of Maryland (UMD) NPP; UMD + PHY, UMD NPP reduced by 0.064% NPP + 600 U of PHY/kg; UMD + PHY + 25D, UMD NPP reduced by 0.090% NPP + 600 U of PHY and 70 microg of 25D/kg; control + PHY mimicked the industry practice of diets by 0.1% when PHY is added; and negative control with 90% UMD NPP concentrations. UMD + PHY and control + PHY diets contained 600 U of PHY/kg, and UMD + PHY + 25D contained 600 U of PHY + 70 microg of 25D/kg. Performance results were presented separately. After each Exp, litter P and WSP were determined, and bone measurements were obtained on 8 or 10 broilers per pen. Tested TRT did not affect broiler BW. Femur ash weight of broilers fed the UMD and UMD + PHY + 25D was lower in all Exp compared with that of broilers fed the control diet. Femur ash was similar for control and UMD + PHY broilers, yet averaged over all Exp, UMD + PHY broilers consumed 39% less NPP and required less NPP per gram of femur ash than those on the control (4.87 and 7.77 g of NPP/g of ash, Exp 3). At the end of Exp 3, broilers were processed in a commercial facility. Despite reductions in NPP intake and bone mineralization, no differences were observed in measurements of economic importance (parts lost, carcass yield, and incidence of broken bones). The P excretion per bird was lowest for birds fed the UMD + PHY + 25D diet followed by those fed the UMD + PHY and negative control diets (10.44, 12.00, and 13.78 g of P/bird, respectively) and were highest for those fed the control diet (19.55 g of P/bird). These results suggest that feeding diets low in P together with PHY and 25D will not affect performance or increase losses at processing while resulting in improved P retention and reductions in P and WSP excreted.

Abstract
From hatch to 18 d of age broilers were fed starter diets with (0.9 kg/ton) or without direct fed microbial (DFM). At 18 d, birds were weighed and, within DFM treatment (trt), randomly assigned to battery pens. In Exp 1, a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of nutrient density [control (C, 19.3% protein (CP), 0.84%, Ca 0.37% nonphytin P (nPP); and 17.1% CP, 0.8% Ca, and 0.3% nPP in the grower (Gr) and finisher (Fn) diets, respectively) and moderate (M) (17% CP, 0.69% Ca, 0.30% nPP; 15% CP, 0.66% Ca, 0.25% nPP in the Gr and Fn diets, respectively)] and DFM concentration [0 or 0.9 kg/ton (++)] was used. Exp 2 was a 2 (DSM at 0 and 0.45 kg/ton) x 3 (nutrient densities) factorial. Exp 2 included a low (L) nutrient density that differed from diet M only in Ca and nPP concentrations and an added trt, diet M with 0.45 kg/ ton DFM as in Exp 1. At the end of the Gr and Fn weight, feed efficiency, apparent nutrient retention were determined, and 4 birds per pen were sampled for tibia ash. In Exp 2, gains in the Gr phase were 1,122.0, 983.7, 1,121.5, 930.7, and 1,151.5 g in birds fed the C, M, M+, L, and L+ diets, respectively. Addition of DFM to the M diet overcame the negative effect of nutrient concentration on performance but not when the L diet was fed. Nutrient level and DFM affected apparent protein, Ca, and P retention at 32 or 42 d of age with retention increasing as nutrient level decreased and with DFM added to the diet. Ca and P retention at 28 d (Exp 1) was higher in birds fed M++ (45.8 and 46%, respectively) than in those fed the C diet (38.7 and 40.0%, respectively). Feeding the M and L diets resulted in lower tibia ash than that of birds fed the C diet, but the addition of DFM to low nutrient diets overcame this negative effect.

Abstract
We studied the ability of broiler chickens to adapt to early moderate P and Ca deficiencies by evaluating the impact of feeding different concentrations of P and Ca, from 1 to 18 d, on performance, bone characteristics, and nutrient absorption in the grower (Gr) period (18 to 32 d). Two starter (St) diets were fed from 1 to 18 d: a control (C) diet [0.45% nonphytate P (nPP) and 0.9% Ca] and a low (L) diet (0.30% nPP and 0.6% Ca). On d 19, half of the birds fed the St C diet were switched to a Gr C diet (0.40% nPP and 0.8% Ca), and the other half were switched to a Gr L diet (0.30% nPP and 0.6% Ca), whereas those fed the L diet in the St phase were fed the L diet in the Gr phase, resulting in a total of 3 treatments. Broiler chickens fed the St L diet weighed less (P < 0.05) than those fed the St C diet at 18 d; however, by 23 d they had they caught up to the C-C birds, and no BW differences (P > 0.05) were observed at 28 and 32 d. Feeding the St L diet resulted in decreased (P < 0.05) tibia ash at 18 d, but by 32 d their tibia ash was not different from that of birds fed the St C and Gr L diets. Broilers subjected to P and Ca restriction from hatch to 18 d absorbed more P and Ca during all times sampled than birds fed the St C and Gr C diets or those fed the St C and the Gr L diet. These results demonstrated that modern broilers exhibited a high adaptive capacity when they were exposed to early dietary P or Ca restrictions.

Abstract
Three 49-d experiments (Exp 1, 2, and 3) with broilers in floor pens were conducted to test the applicability of nonphytin phosphorus (NPP) requirements and the NPP-sparing effect of phytase (PHY) and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25D) determined previously in battery Exp. Six dietary NPP treatments were tested using a 4-phase feeding program. Treatments 1 to 6 were NRC (1994) NPP (C); University of Maryland (UMD) NPP; UMD NPP - 0.064% (UMD+PHY); UMD NPP - 0.09% (UMD+PHY+25D); NRC - 0.10% (C+PHY), and 90% UMD NPP (NC), respectively. Treatments 3, 4, and 5 had 600 U of PHY/kg of diet. Treatment 4 also had 70 microg of 25D/kg of diet; NPP concentrations were reduced to account for the sparing effect of these additives. No differences in hatch to 49 d BW were observed between treatments in Exp 1 and 2, and only in Exp 3 were the BW of the NC broilers (2.86 kg) different (P < 0.05) from those fed the C, UMD, and UMD+PHY treatments (2.96, 2.94, and 2.98 kg, respectively). Cumulative NPP consumption per bird was lowest (P < 0.05) for broilers fed the UMD+PHY+25D treatment (8.65 g in Exp 3) compared with those fed the C, NC, UMD, and UMD+PHY treatments (18.19, 10.60, 13.63, and 11.01 g, respectively for Exp 3). Application of any of these treatments reduced total P and NPP consumption compared with C. The results of this series of floor pen Exp validate the UMD NPP recommendations for a 4-phase feed program and the PHY and 25D NPP-sparing effects observed in battery trials without negatively affecting broiler performance.

Abstract
Diet modification to decrease phosphorus (P) concentration in animal feeds and manures can reduce surpluses of manure P in areas of intensive animal production. We generated turkey and broiler litters from two and three flock trials, respectively, using diets that ranged from "high" to "low" in non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) and some of which contained feed additives such as phytase. Phosphorus forms in selected litters were analyzed by sequential chemical fractionation and solution (31)P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Selected litters were also incubated with four contrasting soils. Reducing dietary NPP and using phytase decreased total P in litters by up to 38%. Water-soluble phosphorus (WSP) in litters was decreased 21 to 44% by feeding NPP closer to animal requirement, but was not affected by phytase addition. Solution (31)P NMR spectroscopy showed that feeding NPP closer to requirement decreased orthophosphate in litters by an average of 38% and that adding phytase to feed did not increase the concentration of orthophosphate in litters. Phytase also decreased phytate P in litters by 25 to 38%, demonstrating that it increases phytate P hydrolysis. Incorporation of litters with soils at the same total P rate increased WSP in soils relative to the control; this increase was correlated to soluble P added with litters at 5 d, but not by 29 d. Changes in soil Mehlich-3 phosphorus (M3-P) were related to total P added in litter, rather than soluble P. We conclude that feeding NPP closer to requirement and using feed additives such as phytase decrease total P concentrations in litters, while having little effect on P solubility in litters and amended soils.

Abstract
The effect of Ca and phytase on phytate phosphorus (PP) hydrolysis was studied in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, PP hydrolysis by a 3-phytase and a 6-phytase was studied at pH 2.5 and 6.5 with Ca added at levels equivalent to 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.7, or 0.9% of the diet. Irrespective of enzyme, Ca at a level as low as 0.1% reduced (P < 0.05) PP hydrolysis at pH 6.5. To test these effects in vivo, 22-d-old male broilers were fed 1 of 6 diets (10 replicate pens of 4 birds per diet) for 30 h. The experimental design was a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement of 3 phytase treatments (0, 500 U of phytase A/kg of diet, and 500 U of phytase B/kg of diet) and 2 added Ca levels (0 and 0.5% from CaCO3) to a corn-soy basal diet. Adding Ca to the diet resulted in a reduction (P < 0.05) in ileal PP disappearance from 69.2 to 25.4% when the 0 and 0.5% added Ca diets were fed, respectively, and in apparent ileal Ca and P absorption (46.3 to 33.6% and 67.9 to 29.4% when 0 and 0.5% Ca were added, respectively). Inclusion of a 3-phytase improved (P < 0.05) ileal PP disappearance from 25.4 to 58.9% in diets containing 0 and 0.5% added Ca, but the improvement was less pronounced with a 6-phytase. Apparent ileal Ca absorption was improved (P < 0.05) when Ca, phytase, or both were added to the diet.

Abstract
The multianalyte array biosensor (MAAB) is a rapid analysis instrument capable of detecting multiple analytes simultaneously. Rapid (15-min), single-analyte sandwich immunoassays were developed for the detection of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, with a detection limit of 8 x 10(4) CFU/ml; the limit of detection was improved 10-fold by lengthening the assay protocol to 1 h. S. enterica serovar Typhimurium was also detected in the following spiked foodstuffs, with minimal sample preparation: sausage, cantaloupe, whole liquid egg, alfalfa sprouts, and chicken carcass rinse. Cross-reactivity tests were performed with Escherichia coli and Campylobacter jejuni. To determine whether the MAAB has potential as a screening tool for the diagnosis of asymptomatic Salmonella infection of poultry, chicken excretal samples from a private, noncommercial farm and from university poultry facilities were tested. While the private farm excreta gave rise to signals significantly above the buffer blanks, none of the university samples tested positive for S. enterica serovar Typhimurium without spiking; dose-response curves of spiked excretal samples from university-raised poultry gave limits of detection of 8 x 10(3) CFU/g.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to determine the nonphytin phosphorus (nPP) requirement for broilers, based on broken line analysis, in the finisher (32 to 42 d) and withdrawal phases (42 to 49 d) of a four-phase feeding program. The determined nPP concentrations used were 0.15, 0.19, 0.26, and 0.31% in the finisher phase, experiment 1 (Exp 1), and 0.10, 0.13, 0.22, and 0.27% in the withdrawal phase, experiment 2 (Exp 2). The analyzed calcium levels in the diets were 0.69 +/- 0.02% and 0.72 +/- 0.05% in Exp 1 and 2, respectively. In Exp 2, an additional treatment was included in which birds were fed NRC-recommended (1994) nPP levels from hatch to 49 d. There were no differences (P>0.05) among dietary treatments in weight gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency in either experiment. In Exp 1, tibia ash weight of birds fed the diets containing 0.15% nPP was lower (P<0.05) than that of birds fed diets containing 0.19, 0.26, or 0.31% nPP. A requirement of 0.20 +/- 0.01% nPP was determined for male broilers weighing between 1,541 to 2,194 g and from 32 to 42 d of age based on broken line analysis of tibia ash weight response to different dietary nPP levels. In Exp 2, the nPP requirement of male broilers weighing between 2,396 g at 42 d and 3,076 g at 49 d, based on tibia ash weight, was 0.16 +/- 0.02% nPP.

Abstract
Phytate phosphorus (PP) hydrolysis by a 3-phytase was studied in vitro at pH 2.5 and 6.5 with either 0, 1.0, 4.0, or 9.0 g of Ca/kg diet, or 0, 1.0, 5.0, 7.5, or 10.0 g/kg diet of micro-mineral premix added as inorganic (IMM) or an equivalent level as micro-mineral-amino acid complexes (MAAC). Adding Ca or micro-minerals reduced (P < 0.05) PP hydrolysis at both pHs; however, the effect was greater at pH 6.5. An in vivo experiment was conducted in which broilers were fed one of six diets for 30 h. The experimental design was a factorial of three micro-mineral forms (0 added, IMM, and MAAC) and two Ca levels (0 or 5 g/kg). Adding Ca reduced (P < 0.05) PP disappearance and increased Ca apparent absorption. No micro-minerals effect (P > 0.05) was seen. Therefore, in poultry diets, it is Ca that inhibits PP hydrolysis and decreases P availability.
