Abstract
BACKGROUND CONTEXT Poor muscle health has been shown to predict poor perioperative outcomes following adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery. Currently, there is limited data concerning the correlation between muscle health and recovery among patients undergoing ASD surgery. PURPOSE To determine the relationship between normalized total psoas area (NTPA), postoperative mobility and adverse events (AEs) among patients undergoing ASD surgery. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. PATIENT SAMPLE A retrospective analysis was performed at a single institution between January 2014 and December 2023 of patients undergoing ASD surgery by 10 board certified fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeons. OUTCOME MEASURES Primary outcome measures were postoperative ambulation distance on postoperative day (POD) 1, 2, 3, and 4 as well as perioperative adverse events including postoperative anemia requiring transfusion, ileus, urinary retention wound complication including dehiscence and infection, delirium, atelectasis, urinary tract infection (UTI), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and epidural hematoma. Secondary outcome measures were 30-day reoperation rates, 30-day readmission rates, and postoperative length of stay (LOS). METHODS Patients that underwent ASD surgery at a single center (2014-2023) were included in the study. NTPA was analyzed at the L3 and L4 midvertebral body on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to determine gender-specific NTPA cut-off values for predicting perioperative AEs. Patients were categorized as having a low NTPA if both L3 and L4 NTPA were below the cut-off values. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to identify confounding predictors of perioperative AEs. RESULTS 279 patients (102 males, 177 females, mean age 61.2±15.2 years) were included. ROC curve analysis demonstrated L3 NTPA <805 mm2/m2 for males and <505 mm2/m2 for females and L4 NTPA <912 mm2/m2 for males and <714 mm2/m2 for females as cut-off values predicting perioperative AEs. 103 patients (36.9%, 42 males, 61 females) were below these cut-off values and were in the low NTPA cohort. The remaining 176 patients (63.1%, 60 males, 116 females) were in the normal NTPA cohort. The low NTPA group had a higher overall perioperative AEs (70.9% vs 39.2%, p<.001), and lower ambulation distances on postoperative day 1 and 2 compared to the normal NTPA group (p=.021, p=.028, respectively). On multivariate analysis, there were no other predictors of perioperative AEs. CONCLUSIONS Low L3 and L4 NTPA is associated with lower early postoperative mobility and higher rates of perioperative AEs among patients undergoing ASD surgery. These findings stress the importance of muscle health in recovery after ASD surgery.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is an age-related disease that is characterized by a decline in muscle mass and function with significant epidemiological and clinical implications. In recent years, gut microbiota has gained attention as an important regulatory factor in human health. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to introduce the definition and epidemiological background of sarcopenia and analyze the potential impact of the gut microbiota on muscle metabolism and growth, including aspects such as gut microbiota metabolites, muscle protein synthesis and energy metabolism. Additionally, this article summarizes the current research progress in gut microbiota interventions for the treatment of sarcopenia, such as probiotics, prebiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation and discusses future research directions and potential therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Sarcopenia, the age-related decline in muscle mass and function, is a significant contributor to increased frailty and mortality in the elderly. Currently, no FDA-approved treatment exists for sarcopenia. Here, we identified norharmane (NR), a β-carboline alkaloid, as a potential therapeutic agent for mitigating muscle aging. We aimed to determine the ability of NR to delay muscle aging in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), mouse, and muscle cells in mice and humans. NR treatment improved swimming ability and increased the maximum velocity in aged C. elegans. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that NR upregulated detoxification genes in C. elegans, including cytochrome P450, UGT, and GST enzymes. NR-induced benefits were dependent on the SKN-1/Nrf2 stress response pathway. In mammalian models, NR delayed cellular senescence in human skeletal muscle myoblasts and enhanced myogenesis in C2C12 cells and primary aged myoblasts. NR supplementation in aged mice prevented muscle loss, improved muscle function, and reduced markers of cellular senescence. We found that the p38 MAPK pathway mediated NR activation of Nrf2 by disrupting the Nrf2-Keap1 interaction. NR also improved oxygen consumption rates and promoted mitochondrial biogenesis. These findings suggest that NR is a promising candidate for preventing sarcopenia and improving muscle health.

Abstract
Low vitamin D status is linked to disturbance in cognitive performance. This study explored possible ways how composition and functional capacity of the gut microbiome affects vitamin D metabolism, directing serum vitamin D (VitD) levels and memory impairmets. It was found that gut microbiome composition, characterized by an increase in the relative abundance of Enterococcus and correlated with vitamin D deficiency and, as consequence, with memory impairments. A key mechanism identified in the study was the differential utilization of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by gut bacteria as substrates for synthesizing vitamin D3 precursor in the skin. This finding confirms a complex interplay between the gut microbiome, host metabolism, and cognitive health, highlighting the potential significance of targeting Enterococcus dysbiosis in future preventive and therapeutic strategies to address VitD deficiency-related memory impairments. These results underscore the importance of understanding and modulating gut microbiome composition to optimize VitD status and cognitive function.

Abstract
Introduction Alongside sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle strength and power, known as dynapenia, increases the risk of functional disability and mortality in older adults. However, engaging in sporting activities during old age appears to enhance functional capacity. The differences in effects between athletes and sedentary individuals, as well as between genders, have yet to be fully clarified. Methods The vertical jump test is recognized as a measure of lower limb performance with almost no learning effect. In the present study, we quantified age-related countermovement jump (CMJ) height loss in 120 subjects over 58 years old among both master athletes and sedentary counterparts, and analysed gender differences. Results Both male and female master athletes showed significantly higher jump heights results than their sedentary counterparts (male athletes 28.5 ± 4.3 cm vs. male sedentaries 15.1 ± 5.2 cm; p < 0.01; female athletes 22.7 ± 2.5 cm vs. female sedentaries 8.2 ± 3.3 cm; p < 0.01). Female athletes were found to have higher CMJ performance than even sedentary men (p < 0.01). The rate of decline in jumping ability was the same for male athletes and non-athletes, but female athletes had the shallower rate of decline of all the groups observed (2.78 cm per decade). Discussion Sporting activity in the older age allows both men and women to perform at a higher level, with the latter also benefiting from a slower rate of decline, which can have a positive impact on functional ability and quality of life.

Abstract
Obesity is a disease that is assuming pandemic proportions in recent decades. With the advancement of medicine and increased access to care, average survival has increased, resulting in a larger number of elderly people. As a result, the amount of elderly people living with obesity is increasing, and the morbidity and impact of obesity on ageing implies severe limitations for these people. The link between obesity and ageing is not only epidemiological, but also strictly pathophysiological. Obesity accelerates the ageing process and ageing is characterised by pathophysiological mechanisms shared by obesity itself. Some examples of alterations shared by ageing and obesity are metabolic changes, sarcopenia and reduced functional capacity related to both loss of muscle strength and reduced cardiorespiratory fitness, as well as a general reduction in the perception of quality of life. The specific ability to antagonize these mechanisms through non-pharmacological treatment based on nutrition and exercise has always been one of the focal points of the international literature. Therefore, this review provides the state of the art on scientific knowledge regarding the main effects of an adequate nutritional plan and an individualised exercise prescription on the general health of elderly with obesity. In particular, this paper addresses the effect of nutrition and physical exercise on pathophysiological changes peculiar of ageing and obesity, providing also the scientific rational for nutritional and exercise prescription in the population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D can influence athletic performance and infection risk. This study aimed to investigate vitamin D status, hematochemical factors, anthropometric and performance parameters, and dietary habits in runners (n = 23) and sedentary healthy individuals (non-runners, n = 22) during the autumn season. METHODS Both groups had their serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D (ng/mL) levels, blood and performance parameters, and dietary habits measured. RESULTS Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels were significantly lower in non-runners (runners: males 30.0 ± 5.6, females 31.2 ± 5.2 vs. non-runners: males, 22.8 ± 6.5, females 24.7 ± 6.5 ng/mL, p < 0.001). White blood cells, monocyte, and neutrophil levels were higher in non-runners for both males and females. Among the subjects, 23 had optimal vitamin D levels (>29 ng/mL), while 22 had insufficient/deficient levels (<29 ng/mL), with a higher prevalence of insufficiency in non-runners compared to runners (63.6% vs. 34.8%; p = 0.053). Maximal isometric force and jump height were equal in both groups, but VO2max was higher in runners. Linear regression analysis identified monocyte count as the only predictor of vitamin D levels for both males (y = -24.452 x + 40.520; R2 = 0.200; p = 0.015) and females (y = -33.409 x + 45.240; R2 = 0.368; p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS This study highlights significant differences in vitamin D status between runners and non-runners, with runners exhibiting higher serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels, although this finding is likely due to the increased sun exposure that runners receive. It also provides valuable insights into the vitamin D status of healthy young sedentary individuals and runners, enhancing the understanding of how physical activity influences vitamin D levels.

Abstract
Aging is a dynamic and progressive process characterized by the gradual accumulation of cellular damage. The continuous functional decline in the intrinsic capacity of living organisms to precisely regulate homeostasis leads to an increased susceptibility and vulnerability to diseases. Among the factors contributing to these changes, body composition-comprised of fat mass and lean mass deposits-plays a crucial role in the trajectory of a disability. Particularly, visceral and intermuscular fat deposits increase with aging and are associated with adverse health outcomes, having been linked to the pathogenesis of sarcopenia. Adipose tissue is involved in the secretion of bioactive factors that can ultimately mediate inter-organ pathology, including skeletal muscle pathology, through the induction of a pro-inflammatory profile such as a SASP, cellular senescence, and immunosenescence, among other events. Extensive research has shown that natural compounds have the ability to modulate the mechanisms associated with cellular senescence, in addition to exhibiting anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory potential, making them interesting strategies for promoting healthy aging. In this review, we will discuss how factors such as cellular senescence and the presence of a pro-inflammatory phenotype can negatively impact body composition and lead to the development of age-related diseases, as well as how the use of polyphenols can be a functional measure for restoring balance, maintaining tissue quality and composition, and promoting health.

Abstract
AIM This study examined the association of low handgrip strength (HGS) for falls in middle-aged adults and older adults every half-decade of life. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted using the public data from the first wave of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil). The participants were allocated into seven age groups 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, and ≥ 80 years. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the odds ratio (OR) of low HGS to the falls regardless of confounding variables such as sex, balance, gait speed, and total number of health conditions. RESULTS A total of 8,112 participants aged 50-105 years (median = 62.0 years): 3,490 males (median = 60.0 years) and 4,622 females (median = 63.0 years) attended the study. Altogether, 21.5% of participants experienced at least one fall. HGS gradually decreases over each half-decade of life. In addition, low HGS presented a significative OR (p < 0.05) for falls for age groups, until 80 s, even when considering confounding variables. CONCLUSIONS Low HGS is associated with falls in middle-aged adults over their 50 s and remained a strong measure of falls across each subsequent half-decade of life, until 80 s.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and prognosis of cachexia in patients with non-sarcopenic dysphagia. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Japanese sarcopenic dysphagia database. Cachexia was diagnosed using the Asian Working Group for Cachexia criteria, sarcopenia using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 criteria, and malnutrition using the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria. Outcomes were death, swallowing function (Food Intake LEVEL Scale (FILS)), and activities of daily living (Barthel Index (BI)). The mean age of the 175 non-sarcopenic dysphagia patients was 77 (±11) years; 103 (59%) were male, 30 (17%) had cachexia, 133 (76%) had whole-body sarcopenia, and 92 (53%) were malnourished. Of the 30 patients with cachexia, 4 and 11 did not have sarcopenia and malnutrition, respectively. No significant associations were found between cachexia, sarcopenia, and malnutrition. Death was notably higher in the cachexia group (5/30; 17% vs. 2/145; 1%, p = 0.002). Median FILS (7 vs. 8, p = 0.585) and median BI (35 vs. 50, p = 0.469) scores did not show significant differences based on cachexia status. The prevalence of cachexia was 17%, and mortality may be higher with cachexia in non-sarcopenic dysphagia patients.

Abstract
The aging of the world population is closely associated with an increased prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders, such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and osteoarthritis, due to common genetic, endocrine, and mechanical risk factors. These conditions are characterized by degeneration of bone, muscle, and cartilage tissue, resulting in an increased risk of fractures and reduced mobility. Importantly, a crucial role in the pathophysiology of these diseases has been proposed for cellular senescence, a state of irreversible cell cycle arrest induced by factors such as DNA damage, telomere shortening, and mitochondrial dysfunction. In addition, senescent cells secrete pro-inflammatory molecules, called senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), which can alter tissue homeostasis and promote disease progression. Undoubtedly, targeting senescent cells and their secretory profiles could promote the development of integrated strategies, including regular exercise and a balanced diet or the use of senolytics and senomorphs, to improve the quality of life of the aging population. Therefore, our review aimed to highlight the role of cellular senescence in age-related musculoskeletal diseases, summarizing the main underlying mechanisms and potential anti-senescence strategies for the treatment of osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and osteoarthritis.

Abstract
While classical resistance exercise is an effective way to improve strength and control postural sway, it may not be suitable for some elderly individuals with specific health disorders (e.g., aneurysms). Therefore, there is a need to explore alternative modalities. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of sensorimotor training on muscle strength and postural control in the female elderly population and subsequently compare these effects with a traditional combined resistance-endurance training program. A total of 34 healthy, active elderly women aged from 65 to 75 years, (average age 72.7 ± 4.4 years, height 161.6 ± 5.1 cm, and weight 66.9 ± 8.4 kg) were randomly assigned to three groups undergoing different 10-week interventions: the resistance-endurance training (RET, n = 11), the sensorimotor training (SMT, n = 12) and the control group (COG, n = 11). Prior to and after the interventions all participants underwent tests of maximal voluntary contraction of the dominant and non-dominant leg; postural sway tests with open and closed eyes; novel visual feedback balance test; 10-meter maximal walking speed (10 mMWS) and stair climb test. A T-test and repeated measures ANOVA were used, followed by the Bonferroni post hoc test, to compare the pre and post-measurements and assess differences in gains between groups. Results showed a significant main effect of time on strength (p < 0.001). In addition, significant differences in time × group interaction on strength (p < 0.01), postural control (p < 01), and ascendant and descended vertical speed (p < 0.001) were observed. Besides, the RET group improved significantly the maximal voluntary contraction of both dominant (16.3%, p ≤ 0.01) and non-dominant leg (10.9%, p ≤ 0.05). SMT group improved maximal voluntary contraction of both dominant (16.6%, p ≤ 0.001) and non-dominant leg (12.7%, p ≤ 0.01). In addition, they also improved mean velocity of the centre of pressure (COP) in postural sway test with eyes open (24.2%, p ≤ 0.05) as well as eyes closed (29.2%, p ≤ 0.05), mean distance of COP in novel visual feedback balance test (37.5%, p ≤ 0.001), ascendant and descended vertical velocity (13.6%, p ≤ 0.001 and 17.8%, p ≤ 0.001, respectively). Results show not only resistance training but sensorimotor intervention boosts strength too. This intervention also enhances postural control and functional abilities for both ascending and descending movements.

Purpose A short period of disuse of 1-2 weeks due to factors such as illness or injury can lead to muscle atrophy, affecting both athletic performance and health. Recent research has shown that uridine 5'-monophosphate (5'-UMP) can counteract disuse-induced muscle atrophy by increasing PGC-1α expression and inhibiting atrogin-1 expression. However, the effect of 5'-UMP on disuse muscle atrophy in humans remains unknown. Therefore, the aimed of this study was to explore the effects of 5'-UMP supplementation during detraining on short-term disuse muscle atrophy in healthy men. Methods Following a 6-week resistance training program on upper arm, healthy men were randomized to either a UMP group (n = 11) or a placebo group (n = 10), taking their respective supplements during the 2-week detraining period. Muscle thickness, an indicator of muscle hypertrophy and atrophy, was measured at 3 positions (MT50, MT60, and MT70) at baseline, 1 week, and 2 weeks after detraining. Results Both groups showed a significant decrease in muscle thickness at MT70. The relative decrease was greater in the placebo group (2.4 ± 2.8%) than in the UMP group (0.0 ± 2.0%), significantly (p = 0.034) at 1 week. However, no significant difference was observed at MT50 and MT60. Conclusion After the hypertrophy, 5'-UMP may prevent muscle atrophy due to the detraining within the first week.

Abstract
The six-minute walking test (6MWT) is an essential test for evaluating exercise tolerance in many respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Frailty and sarcopenia can cause rapid aging of the cardiovascular system in elderly people. Early detection and evaluation of frailty and sarcopenia are crucial for determining the treatment method. We aimed to develop a wearable measuring system for the 6MWT and propose a method for identifying frailty and quantifying walking muscle strength (WMS). In this study, 60 elderly participants were asked to wear accelerometers behind their left and right ankles during the 6MWT. The gait data were collected by a computer or smartphone. We proposed a method for analyzing walking performance using the stride length (SL) and step cadence (SC) instead of gait speed directly. Four regions (Range I-IV) were divided by cutoff values of SC = 2.0 [step/s] and SL = 0.6 [m/step] for a quick view of the frail state. There were 62.5% of frail individuals distributed in Range III and 72.4% of non-frail individuals in Range I. A concept of a WMS score was proposed for estimating WMS quantitatively. We found that 62.5% of frail individuals were scored as WMS1 and 41.4% of the non-frail elderly as WMS4. The average walking distances corresponding to WMS1-4 were 207 m, 370 m, 432 m, and 462 m, respectively. The WMS score may be a useful tool for quantitatively estimating sarcopenia or frailty due to reduced cardiopulmonary function.

Abstract
Background: Physical activities play an important role in alleviating the aging problem and improving the physical fitness of middle-aged and elderly people. Blood flow restriction (BFR) training, also known as pressure training, has been widely used to improve athletes' performance and rehabilitation, which is a relatively novel exercise method for improving the physical fitness of middle-aged and elderly people. The purpose of this study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of domestic and foreign randomized controlled trial studies on BFR training for middle-aged and elderly women, further explore the impact of BFR training on health status. Methods: Meta-analysis was performed according to PRISMA standards, and charts were drawn using Review Manager 5.4 and Stata 17 software. In this study, the keywords such as "pressure training", "blood restriction training", "elderly women", "KAATSU", "blood flow restriction training" were used on CNKI, China Science and Technology Journal Database, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EBSCO, Scopus, and randomized controlled trials were searched in all languages. The search was performed from the establishment of database to 2 January 2024. The results of the combined effect were represented by standard mean differences. Results: Among the 681 literature retrieved, six eligible English articles were included in this meta-analysis. The overall effect test of the combined effect was performed on 10 groups of data, and the results were SMD = -0.18 (95%CI: -0.91 to 0.56; p > 0.05), the maximum dynamic force of 1RM SMD = 0.97 (95%CI: 0.35 to 1.58; p < 0.05), leg compression force SMD = -0.10 (95%CI: -0.78 to 0.57; p > 0.05), heart rate SMD = 0.33 (95%CI: -2.50 to 3.17; p > 0.05), systolic blood pressure (SBP) SMD = -1.44 (95%CI: -2.17 to -0.70; p < 0.05), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) SMD = -0.69 (95%CI: 2.54 to 1.15; p > 0.05). Conclusion: BFR training had a significant effect on the increase of the maximum dynamic force of 1RM and decrease of blood pressure in middle-aged and elderly women, but there was no significant difference found in heart rate and leg compression force. Abstract
Skeletal muscle can undergo detrimental changes in various diseases, leading to muscle dysfunction and atrophy, thus severely affecting people's lives. Along with exercise, there is a growing interest in the potential of nutritional support against muscle atrophy. This review provides a brief overview of the molecular mechanisms driving skeletal muscle atrophy and summarizes recent advances in nutritional interventions for preventing and treating muscle atrophy. The nutritional supplements include amino acids and their derivatives (such as leucine, β-hydroxy, β-methylbutyrate, and creatine), various antioxidant supplements (like Coenzyme Q10 and mitoquinone, resveratrol, curcumin, quercetin, Omega 3 fatty acids), minerals (such as magnesium and selenium), and vitamins (such as vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E), as well as probiotics and prebiotics (like Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and 1-kestose). Furthermore, the study discusses the impact of a combined approach involving nutritional support and physical therapy to prevent muscle atrophy, suggests appropriate multi-nutritional and multi-modal interventions based on individual conditions to optimize treatment outcomes, and enhances the recovery of muscle function for patients. By understanding the molecular mechanisms behind skeletal muscle atrophy and implementing appropriate interventions, it is possible to enhance the recovery of muscle function and improve patients' quality of life.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) presents a challenge for individuals today, affecting their health and life quality. Besides its known complications, T2DM has been found to contribute to bone/mineral abnormalities, thereby increasing the vulnerability to bone fragility/fractures. However, there is still a need for appropriate diagnostic approaches and targeted medications to address T2DM-associated bone diseases. This study aims to investigate the relationship between changes in gut microbiota, T2DM, and osteoporosis. To explore this, a T2DM rat model was induced by combining a high-fat diet and low-dose streptozotocin treatment. Our findings reveal that T2DM rats have lower bone mass and reduced levels of bone turnover markers compared to control rats. We also observe significant alterations in gut microbiota in T2DM rats, characterized by a higher relative abundance of Firmicutes (F) and Proteobacteria (P), but a lower relative abundance of Bacteroidetes (B) at the phylum level. Further analysis indicates a correlation between the F/B ratio and bone turnover levels, as well as between the B/P ratio and HbA1c levels. Additionally, at the genus level, we observe an inverse correlation in the relative abundance of Lachnospiraceae. These findings show promise for the development of new strategies to diagnose and treat T2DM-associated bone diseases.

Abstract
In recent decades, following the spread of obesity, metabolic dysfunction has come to represent the leading cause of liver disease. The classical clinical presentation of the cirrhotic patient has, therefore, greatly changed, with a dramatic increase in subjects who appear overweight or obese. Due to an obesogenic lifestyle (lack of physical activity and overall malnutrition, with an excess of caloric intake together with a deficit of proteins and micronutrients), these patients frequently develop a complex clinical condition defined as sarcopenic obesity (SO). The interplay between cirrhosis and SO lies in the sharing of multiple pathogenetic mechanisms, including malnutrition/malabsorption, chronic inflammation, hyperammonemia and insulin resistance. The presence of SO worsens the outcome of cirrhotic patients, affecting overall morbidity and mortality. International nutrition and liver diseases societies strongly agree on recommending the use of food as an integral part of the healing process in the comprehensive management of these patients, including a reduction in caloric intake, protein and micronutrient supplementation and sodium restriction. Based on the pathophysiological paths shared by cirrhosis and SO, this narrative review aims to highlight the nutritional interventions currently advocated by international guidelines, as well as to provide hints on the possible role of micronutrients and nutraceuticals in the treatment of this multifaceted clinical condition.

Abstract
Vitamin D is essential for the optimal health of the skeletal system. However, this vitamin also plays a role in other functions of the human body, such as muscle, immune, and inflammatory functions. Some studies have reported that adequate levels of vitamin D improve immune system function by reducing the levels of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines, which can protect against the risk of post-exercise illness. This systematic review aims to investigate the effects of vitamin D supplementation on pro-inflammatory cytokines in athletes. This study was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A literature search was conducted in SPORTDiscus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar up to 1 October 2023. The quality of the articles was evaluated using the Risk of Bias 2 Tool. After searching the databases, a total of 7417 studies were identified, 6 of which met the eligibility criteria, and their outcomes were presented. The six studies included 176 participants. All six studies are randomized control trials, including a total of 176 subjects, primarily men (81%). Regarding the types of athletes, most participants were endurance athletes. Our investigation in this systematic review demonstrated that out of the six studies, only two of them reported significant changes in IL-6 and TNF-α levels after taking high-dose vitamin D. Other studies did not present any significant changes after vitamin D supplementation in athletes with respect to IL-6 and TNF-α levels. Abstract
Menopause is associated with an increased prevalence of obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, and osteoporosis. These diseases and unfavorable laboratory values, which are characteristic of this period in women, can be significantly improved by eliminating and reducing dietary risk factors. Changing dietary habits during perimenopause is most effectively achieved through nutrition counseling and intervention. To reduce the risk factors of all these diseases, and in the case of an already existing disease, dietary therapy led by a dietitian should be an integral part of the treatment. The following review summarizes the recommendations for a balanced diet and fluid intake, the dietary prevention of cardiovascular diseases, the role of sleep, and the key preventive nutrients in menopause, such as vitamin D, calcium, vitamin C, B vitamins, and protein intake. In summary, during the period of perimenopause and menopause, many lifestyle factors can reduce the risk of developing all the diseases (cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, and tumors) and symptoms characteristic of this period.

Abstract
Gut microbiota can coordinate with different tissues and organs to maintain human health, which derives the concept of the gut-X axis. Conversely, the dysbiosis of gut microbiota leads to the occurrence and development of various diseases, such as neurological diseases, liver diseases, and even cancers. Therefore, the modulation of gut microbiota offers new opportunities in the field of medicines. Antibiotics, probiotics or other treatments might restore unbalanced gut microbiota, which effects do not match what people have expected. Recently, nanomedicines with the high targeting ability and reduced toxicity make them an appreciative choice for relieving disease through targeting gut-X axis. Considering this paradigm-setting trend, the current review summarizes the advancements in gut microbiota and its related nanomedicines. Specifically, this article introduces the immunological effects of gut microbiota, summarizes the gut-X axis-associated diseases, and highlights the nanotherapeutics-mediated treatment via remolding the gut-X axis. Moreover, this review also discusses the challenges in studies related to nanomedicines targeting the gut microbiota and offers the future perspective, thereby aiming at charting a course toward clinic.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency, prevalent worldwide, is linked to muscle weakness, sarcopenia, and falls. Muscle regeneration is a vital process that allows for skeletal muscle tissue maintenance and repair after injury. PubMed and Web of Science were used to search for studies published prior to May 2023. We assessed eligible studies that discussed the relationship between vitamin D, muscle regeneration in this review. Overall, the literature reports strong associations between vitamin D and skeletal myocyte size, and muscle regeneration. In vitro studies in skeletal muscle cells derived from mice and humans showed vitamin D played a role in regulating myoblast growth, size, and gene expression. Animal studies, primarily in mice, demonstrate vitamin D's positive effects on skeletal muscle function, such as improved grip strength and endurance. These studies encompass vitamin D diet research, genetically modified models, and disease-related mouse models. Relatively few studies looked at muscle function after injury, but these also support a role for vitamin D in muscle recovery. The human studies have also reported that vitamin D deficiency decreases muscle grip strength and gait speed, especially in the elderly population. Finally, human studies reported the benefits of vitamin D supplementation and achieving optimal serum vitamin D levels in muscle recovery after eccentric exercise and surgery. However, there were no benefits in rotator cuff injury studies, suggesting that repair mechanisms for muscle/ligament tears may be less reliant on vitamin D. In summary, vitamin D plays a crucial role in skeletal muscle function, structural integrity, and regeneration, potentially offering therapeutic benefits to patients with musculoskeletal diseases and in post-operative recovery.

Abstract
Increasing disability-free life expectancy is a crucial issue to optimize active ageing and to reduce the burden of evitable medical costs. One of the main challenges is to develop pragmatic and personalized prevention strategies in order to prevent frailty, counteract adverse outcomes such as falls and mobility disability, and to improve quality of life. Strong evidence reports the effectiveness of exercise interventions to improve various physical parameters and muscle function that are cornerstones of frailty. Other findings also suggest that the interactions between nutrition and physical exercise with or without health behavior promotion prevent the development of frailty. Multimodal programs, including structured exercise, adequate dietary intervention and health behavior promotion, appear increasingly consensual. However, in order for implementation in real-life settings, some pitfalls need to be addressed. In this perspective, structuring and tailoring feasible, acceptable and sustainable interventions to optimize exercise training responses are essential conditions to warrant short, medium and long-term individual benefits. The different components of exercise programs appear to be fairly consensual and effective. However, specific composition of the programs proposed (frequency, intensity, type, time, volume and progressiveness) have to be tailored to individual characteristics and objectives in order to improve exercise responses. The intervention approaches, behavioral strategies and indications for these programs also need to be refined and framed. The main objective of this work is to guide the actions of healthcare professionals and enable them to widely and effectively implement multimodal programs including exercise, nutrition and behavioral strategies in real-life settings.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies of older adults have suggested a differential sex-specific prevalence of sarcopenia, which is a condition characterized by a progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. Recently, we collected serum samples from 80 fully evaluated older adults and identified CXCL12α as a sex-independent serum marker of sarcopenia. Here, we used this serum collection to find potential sex-specific serum markers via the simultaneous quantification of 34 inflammatory cytokines/chemokines. The appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) was used as a decisive criterion for diagnosing sarcopenia. A Pearson correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation between ASMI and serum IL-16 in females only (p = 0.021). Moreover, women with sarcopenia exhibited significantly higher IL-16 (p = 0.025) serum levels than women in a control group. In contrast, males with sarcopenia had lower IL-16 (p = 0.013) levels than males in a control group. The further use of Fisher's exact test identified obesity (p = 0.027) and high serum levels of IL-16 (p = 0.029) as significant risk factors for sarcopenia in females. In male older adults, however, malnutrition (p = 0.028) and low serum levels of IL-16 (p = 0.031) were the most significant risk factors for sarcopenia. The differential sex-specific associations of IL-16 in older adults may contribute to the development of more precise regression models for future research and elucidate the role of IL-16 in the progression of sarcopenic obesity.

Abstract
Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved process critical in maintaining cellular homeostasis. Recently, the anticancer potential of autophagy inducers, including phytochemicals, was suggested. Indicaxanthin is a betalain pigment found in prickly pear fruit with antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic activities in colorectal cancer cells associated with epigenetic changes in selected methylation-silenced oncosuppressor genes. Here, we demonstrate that indicaxanthin induces the up-regulation of the autophagic markers LC3-II and Beclin1, and increases autophagolysosome production in Caco-2 cells. Methylomic studies showed that the indicaxanthin-induced pro-autophagic activity was associated with epigenetic changes. In addition to acting as a hypermethylating agent at the genomic level, indicaxanthin also induced significant differential methylation in 39 out of 47 autophagy-related genes, particularly those involved in the late stages of autophagy. Furthermore, in silico molecular modelling studies suggested a direct interaction of indicaxanthin with Bcl-2, which, in turn, influenced the function of Beclin1, a key autophagy regulator. External effectors, including food components, may modulate the epigenetic signature of cancer cells. This study demonstrates, for the first time, the pro-autophagic potential of indicaxanthin in human colorectal cancer cells associated with epigenetic changes and contributes to outlining its potential healthy effect in the pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract
Diamond step (DS) exercises are associated with multiple components of postural control and, thus, have the potential to efficiently improve balance ability. This study aimed to verify whether DS exercises contribute to improving balance ability. This study included 35 healthy young people and 29 older adults. DS exercises were performed continuously for 3 min, four times a week, for 1 month. Balance ability was assessed at baseline and after 1 and 2 months; eight items in total were examined: 30 s chair stand test, functional reach test, standing on one leg with eyes closed, time required for five rounds of DS, left-right DS, Y balance test, open-close stepping test, and finger-to-floor distance. The difficulty, achievement, and lightness/enjoyment of DS exercises were measured after the first practice and 1 month after beginning the exercises as subjective evaluations. Older adults showed improvement in seven of the eight items, with the exception being the one-legged stance with closed eyes. The subjective evaluation showed a decrease in the level of difficulty of DS exercises for older adults. DS exercises may improve balance by effectively utilizing various postural control strategies. These exercises can be effective and easy to implement, given their moderate difficulty level and self-efficacy.
