Abstract
Herein, CuO and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were biogenically synthesized using plant (Artemisia vulgaris) extracts. The biogenic NPs were subsequently evaluated in vitro for antifungal activity (200 mg/L) against Fusarium virguliforme (FV; the cause of soybean sudden death), and for crop protection (200-500 mg/L) in FV-infested soybean. ZnONPs exhibited 3.8-, 2.5-, and 4.9 -fold greater in vitro antifungal activity, compared to Zn or Cu acetate salt, the Artemisia extract, and a commercial fungicide (Medalion Fludioxon), respectively. The corresponding CuONP values were 1.2-, 1.0-, and 2.2 -fold, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed significant morpho-anatomical damage to fungal mycelia and conidia. NP-treated FV lost their hyphal turgidity and uniformity and appeared structurally compromised. ZnONP caused shriveled and broken mycelia lacking conidia, while CuONP caused collapsed mycelia with shriveled and disfigured conidia. In soybean, 200 mg/L of both NPs enhanced growth by 13%, compared to diseased controls, in both soil and foliar exposures. Leaf SEM showed fungal colonization of different infection sites, including the glandular trichome, palisade parenchyma, and vasculature. Foliar application of ZnONP resulted in the deposition of particulate ZnO on the leaf surface and stomatal interiors, likely leading to particle and ion entry via several pathways, including ion diffusion across the cuticle/stomata. SEM also suggested that ZnO/CuO NPs trigger structural reinforcement and anatomical defense responses in both leaves and roots against fungal infection. Collectively, these findings provide important insights into novel and effective mechanisms of crop protection against fungal pathogens by plant-engineered metal oxide nanoparticles, thereby contributing to the sustainability of nano-enabled agriculture.

Abstract
Agro-nanotechnology-the application of nanotechnology in agriculture-holds immense promise for addressing main challenges in African agriculture and promoting sustainable development. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of how agro-nanotechnology is being utilized across Africa, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize various aspects of agricultural practices on the continent. Firstly, the utilization of nanomaterials such as nanoparticles, nanofertilizers, and nanopesticides offers opportunities for enhancing nutrient management, improving soil health, and increasing crop productivity in diverse agroecosystems across Africa. Nanofertilizers, with their controlled release mechanisms, facilitate efficient nutrient uptake by plants, thereby reducing nutrient losses and enhancing fertilizer use efficiency, which is crucial for resource-constrained smallholder farmers. Nanopesticides suggest improved efficacy in pest and disease control, reducing environmental harm compared to traditional pesticides. Their targeted delivery also minimizes off-target effects, which is crucial for Africa's food security. Nanosensors also enable real-time monitoring of soil and crop health, enhancing precision agriculture. Nanotechnology in postharvest management reduces food losses and improves safety. However, its adoption requires careful consideration of socioeconomic and regulatory factors to ensure equitable access and environmental safety. Collaborative efforts involving policymakers, researchers, farmers, and other stakeholders are crucial for harnessing the benefits of agro-nanotechnology while addressing potential risks and concerns. In conclusion, the integration of agro-nanotechnology into African agriculture presents a transformative opportunity to enhance productivity, resilience, and sustainability, contributing to the continent's efforts toward achieving food security, economic development, and environmental conservation.

Abstract
Nanoemulsions, which are characterized by their nanometer-scale droplets, have gained significant attention in different fields, such as medicine, food, cosmetics, and agriculture, because of their unique properties. With an increasing number of countries engaging in research on nanoemulsions, interest in their properties, preparation methods, and applications has increased. Hence, tracing the relevant research on nanoemulsions published in the past ten years on a global scale, by conducting data mining and visualization analysis on a sufficiently large text dataset through bibliometrics, sorting out and summarizing certain indicators, the development history, research status and research hotspots in the field of nanoemulsions can be clearly revealed, providing reference value and significance for subsequent research. This bibliometric review examines the research landscape of nanoemulsions from 2013-2023 via the SCI-E and SSCI databases, providing insights into the current status, hotspots, and future trends of this field. To offer a comprehensive overview, this analysis includes publication counts, author keywords, institutional contributions, research areas, prolific authors, highly cited papers and hot research papers. The findings reveal that China led in nanoemulsions research, followed by USA, India, and Brazil, with the University of Massachusetts emerging as a key player with the highest average number of citations per article (ACPP) and h-index. Food Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, and the Journal of Drug Delivery Science and Technology are among the top journals publishing in this area. Chemistry, pharmacology, and pharmacy emerged as the primary research domains, with McClements DJ as the most prolific and influential author. In keyword analysis, essential oil nanoemulsions are currently the main preparation direction, and various characteristics of nanoemulsions, such as their bioavailability, stability, biocompatibility, and antioxidant and antibacterial properties, have also been studied extensively. Research hotspots are focused mostly on the development of new applications and technologies for nanoemulsions.

Abstract
Climate changes cause various types of abiotic stress in plants, thus affecting plant growth and causing decline in yield. An urgent need exists to develop an environmentally friendly attitude based on principles of sustainable agriculture. Nanomaterials may improve plant growth and enhance crop productivity by handling the conditions considered stressful for plants in a sustainable and ecofriendly manner. Selenium (Se) has been put into the category of beneficial elements in plants. Se-enriched crops present a successful choice of dietary resource for Se-supplemented food and feed owing to their high bioavailability and accessibility. Researchers from distinct areas, including both nanoscience and plant science, should encourage emerging innovations that are linked with abiotic stress in crop production. The implementation of Se nanoparticles (SeNPs) is considered one of the predominating mechanisms by plants to ameliorate stressful conditions. Increasing evidence of earlier research revealed that SeNPs could enhance plant growth and development, nutrient bioavailability, soil fertility, and stress response while maintaining environmental safety. Meanwhile, some earlier studies reported that SeNPs might have a multilateral influence on plants dependent on diverse Se nanomaterial traits, doses, and plant species. More efforts are required to enhance the knowledge of how SeNPs impact crops exposed to different abiotic detrimental factors. In light of contemporary research challenges linked to SeNPs and the prolonged application of Se nanomaterials to plants, the aim of this review is elucidating the principal fruitful areas of SeNP exploration, comparisons with bulk Se, insights into mechanisms of abiotic stress alleviation in plants, existing research uncertainties, and practical challenges for SeNP applications under varying environments.

Abstract
Future agricultural practices necessitate green alternatives to replace hazardous insecticides while distinguishing between pests and beneficial insects. Chitosan, as a biological macromolecule derived from chitin, is biodegradable and exhibits low toxicity to non-target organisms, making it a sustainable alternative to synthetic pesticides. This review identifies chitosan-derivatives for insecticidal activity and highlights its efficacy including genotoxicity, defense mechanism, and disruption of insect's exoskeleton at different concentrations against several insect pests. Similarly, synergistic effects of chitosan in combination with natural extracts, essential oils, and plant-derived compounds, enhances insecticidal action against various pests was evaluated. The chitosan-based insecticide formulations (CHIF) in the form of emulsions, microcapsules, and nanoparticles showed efficient insecticide action on the targeted pests with less environmental impact. The current challenges associated with the field-trial application were also recognized, by optimizing potent CHIF-formulation parameters, scaling-up process, and regulatory hurdles addressed alongside potential solutions. These findings will provide insight into achieving the EU mission of reducing chemical pesticides by 50 %.

Abstract
Phytoremediation, the use of plants to remove heavy metals from polluted environments, has been extensively studied. However, abiotic stresses such as drought, salt, and high temperatures can limit plant growth and metal uptake, reducing phytoremediation efficiency. High levels of HMs are also toxic to plants, further decreasing phytoremediation efficacy. This manuscript explores the potential of microbial-assisted and chelation-supported approaches to improve phytoremediation under abiotic stress conditions. Microbial assistance involves the use of specific microbes, including fungi that can produce siderophores. Siderophores bind essential metal ions, increasing their solubility and bioavailability for plant uptake. Chelation-supported methods employ organic acids and amino acids to enhance soil absorption and supply of essential metal ions. These chelating agents bind HMs ions, reducing their toxicity to plants and enabling plants to better withstand abiotic stresses like drought and salinity. Managed microbial-assisted and chelation-supported approaches offer more efficient and sustainable phytoremediation by promoting plant growth, metal uptake, and mitigating the effects of heavy metal and abiotic stresses. These approaches not only boost plant growth and metal uptake but also alleviate the toxic effects of HMs and abiotic stresses like drought and salinity. By doing so, they make phytoremediation a more viable and effective solution for environmental remediation.

Abstract
The widespread proliferation of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) in aquatic ecosystems has raised significant ecological, environmental, and socioeconomic concerns globally. These concerns include reduced biodiversity, impeded water transportation and recreational activities, damage to marine infrastructure, and obstructions in power generation dams and irrigation systems. This review critically evaluates the challenges posed by water hyacinth (WH) and investigates potential strategies for converting its biomass into value-added agricultural products, specifically nanonutrients-fortified, biochar-based, green fertilizer. The review examines various methods for producing functional nanobiochar and green fertilizer to enhance plant nutrient uptake and improve soil nutrient retention. These methods include slow or fast pyrolysis, gasification, laser ablation, arc discharge, or chemical precipitation used for producing biochar which can then be further reduced to nano-sized biochar through ball milling, a top-down approach. Through these means, utilization of WH-derived biomass in economically viable, eco-friendly, sustainable, precision-driven, and smart agricultural practices can be achieved. The positive socioeconomic impacts of repurposing this invasive aquatic plant are also discussed, including the prospects of a circular economy, job creation, reduced agricultural input costs, increased agricultural productivity, and sustainable environmental management. Utilizing WH for nanobiochar (or nano-enabled biochar) for green fertilizer production offers a promising strategy for waste management, environmental remediation, improvement of waterway transportation infrastructure, and agricultural sustainability. To underscore the importance of this work, a metadata analysis of literature carried out reveals that an insignificant section of the body of research on WH and biochar have focused on the nano-fortification of WH biochar for fertilizer development. Therefore, this review aims to expand knowledge on the upcycling of non-food crop biomass, particularly using WH as feedstock, and provides crucial insights into a viable solution for mitigating the ecological impacts of this invasive species while enhancing agricultural productivity.

Abstract
The integration of zinc nanoparticles (Zn NPs) with biochar offers a transformative approach to sustainable agriculture by enhancing plant productivity and human nutrition. This combination improves soil health, optimizes nutrient uptake, and increases resilience to environmental stressors, leading to superior crop performance. Our literature review shows that combining Zn NPs with biochar significantly boosts the crop nutrient composition, including proteins, vitamins, sugars, and secondary metabolites. This enhancement improves the plant tolerance to environmental challenges, crop quality, and shelf life. This technique addresses the global issue of Zn deficiency by biofortifying food crops with increased Zn levels, such as mung beans, lettuce, tomatoes, wheat, maize, rice, citrus, apples, and microgreens. Additionally, Zn NPs and biochar improve soil properties by enhancing water retention, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and microbial activity, making soils more fertile and productive. The porous structure of biochar facilitates the slow and sustained release of Zn, ensuring its bioavailability over extended periods and reducing the need for frequent fertilizer applications. This synergy promotes sustainable agricultural practices and reduces the environmental footprint of the traditional farming methods. However, potential ecological risks such as biomagnification, nanoparticle accumulation, and toxicity require careful consideration. Comprehensive risk assessments and management strategies are essential to ensure that agricultural benefits do not compromise the environmental or human health. Future research should focus on sustainable practices for deploying Zn NPs in agriculture, balancing food security and ecological integrity and positioning this approach as a viable solution for nutrient-efficient and sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Most nitrogen (N) applied to plants as fertilizer is lost through leaching. Here, nanocellulose was used in mitigating N leaching loss. Lettuce-cropped soil was treated with unmodified or Zn-modified nanocellulose (1-2% by wt) in combination with NPK, compared with urea and NPK-only treatments. Consecutive leaching, plant growth, plant N uptake, and soil nitrogen retention were assessed. Nanocellulose + NPK significantly (p ≤ 0.05) reduced N leaching, compared with urea and NPK-only. 1-and-2 wt % nanocellulose, as well as Zn-modified 1-and-2 wt % nanocellulose, reduced N leaching by 45, 38, 39, and 49% compared with urea and by 43, 36, 37, and 47% compared with NPK-only, respectively. Nitrogen leached mainly as NO3- (98.4%). Compared with urea and NPK, lettuce shoot mass was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased by 30-42% and by 44-57%, respectively, by all nanocellulose treatments, except for the Zn-modified 1 wt % nanocellulose. Leached N negatively correlated to biomass yield. Soil N retention was enhanced by the pristine and Zn-modified nanocelluloses between 27 and 94%. Demonstrably, nanocellulose can be utilized for mitigating N loss in soil and supporting crop production, resource management, and environmental sustainability.

Abstract
Climate change is a global problem facing all aspects of the agricultural sector. Heat stress due to increasing atmospheric temperature is one of the most common climate change impacts on agriculture. Heat stress has direct effects on crop production, along with indirect effects through associated problems such as drought, salinity, and pathogenic stresses. Approaches reported to be effective to mitigate heat stress include nano-management. Nano-agrochemicals such as nanofertilizers and nanopesticides are emerging approaches that have shown promise against heat stress, particularly biogenic nano-sources. Nanomaterials are favorable for crop production due to their low toxicity and eco-friendly action. This review focuses on the different stresses associated with heat stress and their impacts on crop production. Nano-management of crops under heat stress, including the application of biogenic nanofertilizers and nanopesticides, are discussed. The potential and limitations of these biogenic nano-agrochemicals are reviewed. Potential nanotoxicity problems need more investigation at the local, national, and global levels, as well as additional studies into biogenic nano-agrochemicals and their effects on soil, plant, and microbial properties and processes.

Abstract
By 2050, the global population is projected to reach 9 billion, underscoring the imperative for innovative solutions to increase grain yield and enhance food security. Nanotechnology has emerged as a powerful tool, providing unique solutions to this challenge. Nanoparticles (NPs) can improve plant growth and nutrition under normal conditions through their high surface-to-volume ratio and unique physical and chemical properties. Moreover, they can be used to monitor crop health status and augment plant resilience against abiotic stresses (such as salinity, drought, heavy metals, and extreme temperatures) that endanger global agriculture. Application of NPs can enhance stress tolerance mechanisms in plants, minimizing potential yield losses and underscoring the potential of NPs to raise crop yield and quality. This review highlights the need for a comprehensive exploration of the environmental implications and safety of nanomaterials and provides valuable guidelines for researchers, policymakers, and agricultural practitioners. With thoughtful stewardship, nanotechnology holds immense promise in shaping environmentally sustainable agriculture amid escalating environmental challenges.

Abstract
Salinity stress significantly hinders plant growth by disrupting osmotic balance and inhibiting nutrient uptake, leading to reduced biomass and stunted development. Using saponin (SAP) and boron (B) can effectively overcome this issue. Boron decreases salinity stress by stabilizing cell walls and membranes, regulating ion balance, activating antioxidant enzymes, and enhancing water uptake. SAP are bioactive compounds that have the potential to alleviate salinity stress by improving nutrient uptake, modulating plant hormone levels, promoting root growth, and stimulating antioxidant activity. That's why the current study was planned to use a combination of SAP and boron as amendments to mitigate salinity stress in sweet potatoes. Four levels of SAP (0%, 0.1%, 0.15%, and 0.20%) and B (control, 5, 10, and 20 mg/L B) were applied in 4 replications following a completely randomized design. Results illustrated that 0.15% SAP with 20 mg/L B caused significant enhancement in sweet potato vine length (13.12%), vine weight (12.86%), root weight (8.31%), over control under salinity stress. A significant improvement in sweet potato chlorophyll a (9.84%), chlorophyll b (20.20%), total chlorophyll (13.94%), photosynthetic rate (17.69%), transpiration rate (16.03%), and stomatal conductance (17.59%) contrast to control under salinity stress prove the effectiveness of 0.15% SAP + 20 mg/L B treatment. In conclusion, 0.15% SAP + 20 mg/L B is recommended to mitigate salinity stress in sweet potatoes.

Abstract
Through the advancement of nanotechnology, agricultural and food systems are undergoing strategic enhancements, offering innovative solutions to complex problems. This scholarly essay thoroughly examines nanotechnological innovations and their implications within these critical industries. Traditional practices are undergoing radical transformation as nanomaterials emerge as novel agents in roles traditionally filled by fertilizers, pesticides, and biosensors. Micronutrient management and preservation techniques are further enhanced, indicating a shift towards more nutrient-dense and longevity-oriented food production. Nanoparticles (NPs), with their unique physicochemical properties, such as an extraordinary surface-to-volume ratio, find applications in healthcare, diagnostics, agriculture, and other fields. However, concerns about their potential overuse and bioaccumulation raise unanswered questions about their health effects. Molecule-to-molecule interactions and physicochemical dynamics create pathways through which nanoparticles cause toxicity. The combination of nanotechnology and environmental sustainability principles leads to the examination of green nanoparticle synthesis. The discourse extends to how nanomaterials penetrate biological systems, their applications, toxicological effects, and dissemination routes. Additionally, this examination delves into the ecological consequences of nanomaterial contamination in natural ecosystems. Employing robust risk assessment methodologies, including the risk allocation framework, is recommended to address potential dangers associated with nanotechnology integration. Establishing standardized, universally accepted guidelines for evaluating nanomaterial toxicity and protocols for nano-waste disposal is urged to ensure responsible stewardship of this transformative technology. In conclusion, the article summarizes global trends, persistent challenges, and emerging regulatory strategies shaping nanotechnology in agriculture and food science. Abstract
Chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) have emerged as a promising tool in agricultural advancements due to their unique properties including, biocompatability, biodegradability, non-toxicity and remarkable versatility. These inherent properties along with their antimicrobial, antioxidant and eliciting activities enable CNPs to play an important role in increasing agricultural productivity, enhancing nutrient absorption and improving pest management strategies. Furthermore, the nano-formulation of chitosan have the ability to encapsulate various agricultural amendments, enabling the controlled release of pesticides, fertilizers, plant growth promoters and biocontrol agents, thus offering precise and targeted delivery mechanisms for enhanced efficiency. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the latest research and developments in the use of CNPs for enhancing agricultural practices through smart and effective delivery mechanisms. It discusses the synthesis methods, physicochemical properties, and their role in enhancing seed germination and plant growth, crop protection against biotic and abiotic stresses, improving soil quality and reducing the environmental pollution and delivery of agricultural amendments. Furthermore, the potential environmental benefits and future directions for integrating CNPs into sustainable agricultural systems are explored. This review aims to shed light on the transformative potential of chitosan nanoparticles as nature's gift for revolutionizing agriculture and fostering eco-friendly farming practices.

This comprehensive review explores the emerging landscape of Nano-QSAR (quantitative structure-activity relationship) for assessing the risk and potency of nanomaterials in agricultural settings. The paper begins with an introduction to Nano-QSAR, providing background and rationale, and explicitly states the hypotheses guiding the review. The study navigates through various dimensions of nanomaterial applications in agriculture, encompassing their diverse properties, types, and associated challenges. Delving into the principles of QSAR in nanotoxicology, this article elucidates its application in evaluating the safety of nanomaterials, while addressing the unique limitations posed by these materials. The narrative then transitions to the progression of Nano-QSAR in the context of agricultural nanomaterials, exemplified by insightful case studies that highlight both the strengths and the limitations inherent in this methodology. Emerging prospects and hurdles tied to Nano-QSAR in agriculture are rigorously examined, casting light on important pathways forward, existing constraints, and avenues for research enhancement. Abstract
Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been widely used in the field of plant engineering, such as DNA/RNA transformation and enhancing plant disease resistance. However, few studies have examined the direct effects of LDHs on plants and their potential utility as nanofertilizers. In this study, the retention capacity of Cu/Fe-layered double hydroxide nanoparticles (CuFe-LDHs) was assessed by comparative experiments on vegetables. The results showed that the retention of CuFe-LDHs in leafy vegetables was high, such as lettuce. Phenotypic analysis revealed that the fresh and dry weights of lettuce leaves were both increased by spraying 10-100 μg/mL CuFe-LDHs. Using the optimal concentration of 10 μg/mL, we conducted further experiments to elucidate the mechanism of CuFe-LDHs promoting lettuce growth. It was found that the application of CuFe-LDHs had a significant effect on growth and induced physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic changes, including an increase in the chlorophyll b content, net photosynthetic rate, and intercellular carbon dioxide concentration, as well as modifications in gene expression patterns and metabolite profiles. This work provides compelling evidence that CuFe-LDHs can efficiently adsorb on the surface of lettuce leaves through hydrogen bonding, promote lettuce growth, mitigate the toxicity of heavy metal ions compared to their raw materials at the same concentration and offer a molecular-scale insight into the response of leafy vegetables to CuFe-LDHs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The spreading of root rot disease of faba bean plant (Vichia faba L, VF) in Egypt is still of great challenge faced researchers since VF is an important legume in Egypt, because their seeds are used for human feeding. Fungicides are used for treatment of either seeds or soil; unfortunately they cause environmental pollution. Therefore, there is a need to continue research to find out safe natural solutions. In this regard, Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and chitosan (micro or nanoform) were used as an inhibitory product against Rhizoctonia solani OM918223 (R.solani) either singly or in combinations. RESULTS The results employed herein have exhibited that R.solani caused root rot disease of VF plants in more than 80% of the plants under investigation. Chitosan nanoparticles (Chitosan NPs) were prepared by ionic gelatin method and characterized by using dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging and Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR). Chitosan NPs are spherical with a diameter of 78.5 nm and exhibited the presence of different functional groups. The inhibitory natural products against R.solani were arranged according to their ability to inhibit the pathogen used in the following descending manner; combination of AMF with Chitosan NPs, AMF with micro chitosan and single AMF, respectively. Where, Chitosan NPs showed a potent influence on R.solani pathogen and reduced the pre-and post-emergence of R. solani. In addition, Chitosan NPs reduced Disease Incidence (DI %) and Disease Severity (DS %) of root rot disease and are widely functional through mixing with AMF by about 88% and 89%. Further, Chitosan NPs and micro chitosan were proved to increase the growth parameters of VF plants such as nutritional status (mineral, soluble sugar, and pigment content), and defense mechanisms including total phenol, peroxidase, and polyphenol oxidase in mycorrhizal plants more than non-mycorrhizal one either in infected or healthy plants. Moreover, activity of AMF as an inhibitory against R.solani and improvement natural agent for VF growth parameters was enhanced through its fusing with Chitosan NPs. CONCLUSIONS The use of AMF and Chitosan NPs increased faba bean plant resistance against the infection of root rot R. solani, with both prevention and cure together. Therefore, this research opens the door to choose natural and environmental friendly treatments with different mechanisms of plant resistance to disease.

Abstract
In environmental and agronomic settings, even minor imbalances can trigger a range of unpredicted responses. Despite the widespread use of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) and new bio-nanofertilizers, their impact on crop production is absent in the literature. Therefore, our research is focused on the agronomic effect of spray application of gold nanoparticles anchored to SiO2 mesoporous silica (AuSi-NPs), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), and iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs) on sunflowers under real-world environments. Our findings revealed that the biosynthetically prepared AuSi-NPs and ZnO-NPs were highly effective in enhancing sunflower seasonal physiology, e.g., the value of the NDVI index increased from 0.012 to 0.025 after AuSi-NPs application. The distribution of leaf trichomes improved and the grain yield increased from 2.47 t ha-1 to 3.29 t ha-1 after ZnO-NPs application. AuSi-NPs treatment resulted in a higher content of essential linoleic acid (54.37%) when compared to the NPs-free control (51.57%), which had a higher determined oleic acid. No NPs or residual translocated metals were detected in the fully ripe sunflower seeds, except for slightly higher silica content after the AuSi-NPs treatment. Additionally, AuSi-NPs and NPs-free control showed wide insect biodiversity while ZnO-NPs treatment had the lowest value of phosphorus as anti-nutrient. Contradictory but insignificant effect on physiology, yield, and insect biodiversity was observed in Fe3O4-NPs treatment. Therefore, further studies are needed to fully understand the long-term environmental and agricultural sustainability of NPs applications.

Abstract
Herein, the impact of chitosan fabricated biogenic silver nanoparticles (Ch@BSNP) has been evaluated for the protective management of bacterial leaf spot (BLS) disease in tomatoes caused by Xanthomonas campestris (NCIM5028). The Ch@BSNP originated by the Trichoderma viride (MTCC5661) derived extracellular compounds and subsequent chitosan hybridization. Spherical-shaped Ch@BSNP (30-35 nm) treated diseased plants were able to combat the biotic stress, as evidenced by the decreased elevated response of stress markers viz; anthocyanin (34.02%), proline (45.00%), flavonoids (20.26%), lipid peroxidation (10.00%), guaiacol peroxidase (36.58%), ascorbate peroxidase (41.50%), polyphenol oxidase (25.34%) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (2.10 fold) as compared to untreated diseased plants. Increased biochemical content specifically sugar (15.43%), phenolics (49.10%), chlorophyll, and carotenoids were measured in Ch@BSNP-treated diseased plants compared to untreated X. campestris-infested plants. The Ch@BSNP considerably reduced stress by increasing net photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency along with decreased transpiration rate and stomatal conductance in comparison to infected plants. Additionally, the expression of defense-regulatory genes viz; growth responsive (AUX, GH3, SAUR), early defense responsive (WRKYTF22, WRKY33, NOS1), defense responsive (PR1, NHO1, NPR1), hypersensitivity responsive (Pti, RbohD, OXI1) and stress hormones responsive (MYC2, JAR1, ERF1) were found to be upregulated in diseased plants while being significantly downregulated in Ch@BSNP-treated diseased plants. Furthermore, fruits obtained from pathogen-compromised plants treated with Ch@BSNP had higher levels of health-promoting compounds including lycopene and beta-carotene than infected plant fruits. This nano-enabled and environmentally safer crop protection strategy may encourage a sustainable agri-system towards the world's growing food demand and promote food security.
