Abstract
Hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg), IgM and IgG antibodies to hepatitis B virus core antigen (anti-HBcIgM and anti-HBcIgG) comprise serological markers of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection of great importance in the epidemiological surveillance of hepatitis B, since they have been routinely considered for classifying the acute and chronic clinical forms of HBV infection. This classification is established according to the expression and dynamics of these markers in the infected person's bloodstream, which serves as the basis for the differential diagnosis between the two clinical entities. However, in certain circumstances, both acute and chronic infection, the detection of these markers may not occur in the bloodstream, favoring the occurrence of atypical serological profiles of infection, and compromising the correct infection clinical classification. In addition, the complex and varied nature of hepatitis B serological profiles may compromise the health professional's ability to analyze the case and, thus, correctly classify the infection's clinical form. Since the expression of these markers in the bloodstream occurs dynamically, with consequent changes in the patient's serological profile as he progresses towards recovery or chronicity, the diagnosis of acute or chronic infection may also be compromised, if it is established based on the collection of a single sample and without knowing the patient's clinical history and their epidemiological antecedents. This manuscript addresses the sensitivity and specificity of HBsAg, anti-HBcIgM, and anti-HBcIgG serological markers detection in the clinical classification of HBV infection and in the epidemiological surveillance of hepatitis B. This review is covering the clinical and epidemiological interpretations of the markers in and of themselves, not in reference to any specific assays.

Abstract
Background. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the most implicated cause of severe liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma worldwide. Studies have shown that the basal core protein (BCP) and precore protein (PC) of HBV play a significant role in HBV-related carcinogenesis. There is a paucity of data on the type and effect of BCP and PC mutations in Nigeria. This study aims to genotype HBV and investigate any mutations within the BCP and PC among HBV patients in Ibadan, Nigeria. Methods. Forty HBV-DNA-positive patients were recruited into this study, and the viral load assay and genotyping by nested multiplex PCR were done. The partial X gene region was amplified and Sanger sequenced. The BPC and PC genomic regions were then analysed using bioinformatics. Results. Twenty-three participants recorded HBV DNA viral load of >20 000 IU, while 17 had <20 000 IU and 28 samples were genotyped. Five genotypes (A, B, C, D and E) and four mixed genotypes (AC, AD ACD and ABCD) were detected. Genotype AC was the most frequently encountered, while genotypes E and B were the least encountered. Mutation was highest in ages 34-45 years. Double mutation A1762T and G1764A within the BCP region was the most encountered mutation. Conclusions. We report a diverse HBV genetic landscape, with mixed infections between genotypes with BCP double-mutation A1762T/G1764A, signalling the likelihood of poor HBV-related liver disease prognosis. Our findings contribute to our understanding of the molecular characteristics of HBV and its potential implications for disease progression and management among HBV-infected Nigerians.

Abstract
HBeAg is a non-structural, secreted protein of hepatitis B virus (HBV). Its p25 precursor is post-translationally modified in the endoplasmic reticulum. The G1862T precore mutation leads to the accumulation of P25 in the endoplasmic reticulum and activation of unfolded protein response. Using mass spectrometry, comparative proteome profiling of Huh-7 cells transfected with wildtype (WT) or G1862T revealed significantly differentially expressed proteins resulting in 12 dysregulated pathways unique to WT-transfected cells and 7 shared between cells transfected with either WT or G1862T. Except for the p38 MAPK signalling pathway, WT showed a higher number of DEPs than G1862T-transfected cells in all remaining six shared pathways. Two signalling pathways: oxidative stress and cell cycle signalling were differentially expressed only in cells transfected with G1862T. Fifteen pathways were dysregulated in G1862T-transfected cells compared to WT. The 15 dysregulated pathways were involved in the following processes: MAPK signalling, DNA synthesis and methylation, and extracellular matrix organization. Moreover, proteins involved in DNA synthesis signalling (replication protein A (RPA) and DNA primase (PRIM2)) were significantly upregulated in G1862T compared to WT. This upregulation was confirmed by mRNA quantification of both genes and immunofluorescent confocal microscopy for RPA only. The dysregulation of the pathways involved in these processes may lead to immune evasion, persistence, and uncontrolled proliferation, which are hallmarks of cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To analysis of quasispecies (QS) changes and high-frequency mutations in the BCP/PreC/C region of patients at different phases of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and provides novel biomarkers for the diagnosis of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. METHODS With the application of next-generation sequencing technology, we were able to sequence the HBV BCP/PreC/C regions in 40 patients, each at different phases of the HBV infection. The heterogeneity of QS and the frequency of mutations were calculated using MEGA 7 software. RESULTS Our results show that the complexity and diversity of the BCP/PreC/C QS in HBeAg-positive CHB patients are significantly higher than those in HBeAg-positive chronic infection patients, while HBeAg-negative chronic infection patients had significantly higher QS complexity and diversity than HBeAg-negative CHB patients. In addition, HBeAg-negative patients showed reduced complexity but increased diversity compared with HBeAg-positive patients. Receiver operating characteristic curves showed that G1764A, C2102T, dN and complexity of QS could be used as potential biomarkers for diagnosing HBeAg-positive CHB, while the A2189C, dS and complexity of QS could be used as potential biomarkers for diagnosing HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis. Finally, our study also found that G1896A and A2159G may be hotspot mutations affecting HBeAg seroconversion. CONCLUSION Our research elucidates the evolution of HBV by analyzing QS heterogeneity and mutation patterns, offering novel serum biomarkers for enhancing clinical diagnosis and disease prognosis. This comprehensive approach sheds light on the intricate dynamics of HBV progression and paves the way for more precise medical interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute or chronic HBV infection in an individual can be laboratory characterized according to the serological profile of the viral markers in the bloodstream, and the dynamics monitoring of these markers is necessary to assess the disorder course and the infection outcome. However, under certain circumstances unusual or atypical serological profiles may be observed in both acute and chronic HBV infection. They are considered as such because they do not properly characterize the form or infection clinical phase or because they seem inconsistent, considering the viral markers dynamics in both clinical contexts. This manuscript comprises the analysis of an unusual serological profile in HBV infection. METHODS AND RESULTS This clinical-laboratory study, had as reference a patient who presented clinical profile suggestive of acute HBV infection after recent exposure, whose laboratory data were initially compatible with this clinical presentation. However, the serological profile analysis and its monitoring demonstrated unusual pattern of viral markers expression, which has been observed in several clinical contexts, and is often associated a number of agent- or host-related factors. CONCLUSION The serological profile analyzed here, associated with the biochemical markers serum levels found, is indicative of active chronic infection, consequence of viral reactivation. This finding suggests that in the event of unusual serological profiles in HBV infection, if the influence of agent- or host-related factors is not properly considered and neither the viral markers dynamics properly analyzed, there may be mistake in the infection clinical diagnosis, especially when the patient's clinical and epidemiological history is unknown.

Abstract
Background The Tumor Location-Modified Laurén Classification (MLC) system combines Laurén histologic subtype and anatomic tumor location. It divides gastric tumors into proximal non-diffuse (PND), distal non-diffuse (DND), and diffuse (D) types. The optimum classification of patients with Laurén mixed tumors in this system is not clear due to its grouping with both diffuse and non-diffuse types in previous studies. The clinical relevance of the MLC in a Western population has not been examined. Methods A cohort study investigated 404 patients who underwent gastrectomy for gastric adenocarcinoma between 2005 and 2020. The classification of Laurén mixed tumors was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and comparison of clinicopathologic characteristics (chi-square). Survival analysis was performed using multivariable Cox regression. Results The ROC curve analysis demonstrated a slightly higher area under the curve value for predicting survival when Laurén mixed tumors were grouped with intestinal-type rather than diffuse-type tumors (0.58 vs 0.57). Survival, tumor recurrence, and resection margin positivity in mixed tumors also was more similar to intestinal type. Distal non-diffuse tumors had the best 5-year survival (DND 64.7 % vs PND 56.1 % vs diffuse 45.1 %; p = 0.006) and were least likely to have recurrence (DND 27.0 % vs PND 34.3 % vs diffuse 48.3 %; p = 0.001). Multivariable analysis demonstrated that MLC was an independent prognostic factor for survival (PND: hazard ratio [HR], 1.64; 95 % confidence interval [CI], 1.16–2.32 vs diffuse: HR, 2.20; 95 % CI, 1.56–3.09) Conclusions The MLC was an independent prognostic marker in this Western cohort of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma. The patients with PND and D tumors had worse survival than those with DND tumors.

Abstract
G1896A switch is one of the hotspots in subjects affected with hepatitis B. This hotspot mutation is observed in all the different spectrum of hepatitis B, and it has a very dangerous and a long lasting effect. The major purpose of the study was to screen G1986A mutations at a large scale and also to establish ligase chain reaction as a mutation testing tool. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Nucleotide Sequencing was done to identify the G1896A mutation in the precore region of the genome. All the 331 HBV positive patients were screened. Almost 29% (24/82) of the cases remarkably had the presence of G1896A mutation confirmed by LCR and direct sequencing. The precore G1896A mutation is responsible for one third of the patients suffering from precore stop codon mutation. It clearly exhibits that LCR is 100% in sync with direct sequencing and is extremely reliable and the results are highly reproducible.

Abstract
Wild-type HBV infection is followed by the blood expression of its widely known serological markers of infection, and designated as, hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) and its antibody (anti-HBs), anti-HBc antibodies (IgM/IgG), and hepatitis B virus 'e' antigen (HBeAg) and its antibody (anti-HBe). These markers are detected as the infection develops and its kinetic behavior serves as a basis for monitoring the disorder and for diagnosing the clinical form or infection phase. Among these, the HBeAg-anti-HBe system markers demonstrate a dynamic profile whose interpretation, both in the acute or chronic HBV infection context, can offer greater difficulty to the health professionals, due to its particularities. This review offers a revisit to the markers dynamics of this system in the acute and chronic HBV infection and to the clinical and laboratory significance of its expression in these two clinical contexts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Seroconversion of hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) is a critical event in the natural course of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. AIM We herein characterize the virological factors associated with postpartum spontaneous HBeAg seroconversion. METHODS A total of 214 pregnant women positive for both hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and HBeAg were followed up at 7-12 months postpartum. RESULTS Of the subjects, 26 (12.1%) achieved spontaneous HBeAg seroconversion. Receiver operating curve analysis indicated that HBV DNA level <1.0 × 107 IU/mL, HBsAg <1.0 × 104 IU/mL and HBeAg <7.36 × 102 S/CO each independently predicted HBeAg seroconversion within 12 months postpartum. At delivery, 73.1% (19/26) women with postpartum HBeAg seroconversion had precore (PC) and/or basal core promoter (BCP) mutations, higher than that (5/36, 13.9%) in the women without postpartum seroconversion. Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that the presence of mutations in PC, BCP, and both PC and BCP at delivery was associated with an increased likelihood (OR = 13.286, 16. 238, and 22.143 respectively, all P < 0.05) to undergo postpartum spontaneous HBeAg seroconversion. CONCLUSION These results suggest that quantitative determination of virological markers and sequencing PC and BCP can predict spontaneous HBeAg seroconversion, which could be valuable in deciding antiviral therapy against HBV.

Abstract
The high prevalence (14.3%) of HIV/HBV co-infections reported in west China makes it necessary to screen concurrent HBV infection in HIV carriers. HBV B genotype was shown to be dominant in 54 cases of HIV/HBV co-infection, accounting for 81.48% of the total. The total drug resistance rate observed was 3.70%. A1762T, G1764A and G1896A mutations were common mutations identified in the BCP/PC region. However, the prevalence of the G1896A mutation was significantly high among the HBeAg negative HIV/HBV co-infected patients, and may be associated with high HBV replication. Mutations in the PC region are related to the loss in synthesis of HBeAg and may accelerate HBV replication in HIV positive patients.

Analysis of HBV basal core promoter/precore gene variability in patients with HBV drug resistance and HIV co-infection in Northwest Ethiopia. PLoS One 2018; 13:e0191970. Abstract
Background We recently reported complex hepatitis B virus (HBV) drug resistant and concomitant vaccine escape hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) variants during human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection and antiretroviral therapy (ART) exposure in Ethiopia. As a continuation of this report using the HBV positive sera from the same study participants, the current study further analyzed the HBV basal core promoter (BCP)/precore (PC) genes variability in patients with HBV drug resistance (at tyrosine-methionine-aspartate-aspartate (YMDD) reverse transcriptase (RT) motifs) and HIV co-infection in comparison with HBV mono-infected counterparts with no HBV drug resistant gene variants. Materials and methods A total of 143 participants of HBV-HIV co-infected (n = 48), HBV mono-infected blood donors (n = 43) and chronic liver disease (CLD) patients (n = 52) were included in the study. The BCP/PC genome regions responsible for HBeAg expression from the EcoRI site (nucleotides 1653–1959) were sequenced and analyzed for the BCP/PC mutant variants. Results Among the major mutant variants detected, double BCP mutations (A1762T/G1764A) (25.9%), Kozak sequences mutations (nt1809-1812) (51.7%) and the classical PC mutations such as A1814C/C1816T (15.4%), G1896A (25.2%) and G1862T (44.8%) were predominant mutant variants. The prevalence of the double BCP mutations was significantly lower in HIV co-infected patients (8.3%) compared with HBV mono-infected blood donors (32.6%) and CLD patients (36.5%). However, the Kozak sequences BCP mutations and the majority of PC mutations showed no significant differences among the study groups. Moreover, except for the overall BCP/PC mutant variants, co-prevalence rates of each major BCP/PC mutations and YMDDRT motif associated lamivudine (3TC)/entecavir (ETV) resistance mutations showed no significant differences when compared with the rates of BCP/PC mutations without YMDD RT motif drug resistance gene mutations. Unlike HIV co-infected group, no similar comparison made among HBV mono-infected blood donors and CLD patients since none of them developed the YMDD RT motif associated 3TC/ETV resistance mutations. However, HBV mono-infected blood donors and CLD patients who had no any drug resistance gene variants developed comparable G1862T (60.6% vs. 65.1%) and G1896A (24.2% vs. 11.6%) PC gene mutations. Conclusion No correlation observed between the BCP/PC genome variability and the YMDD RT motif associated HBV drug resistance gene variants during HIV co-infection. Nevertheless, irrespective of HIV co-infection status, the higher records of the BCP/PC gene variability in this study setting indicate a high risk of potential HBeAg negative chronic HBV infection in Northwest Ethiopia.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the relationship between histological mixed-type of early gastric cancer (EGC) in the mucosa and submucosa and lymph node metastasis (LNM).
METHODS This study included 298 patients who underwent gastrectomy for EGC between 2005 and 2012. Enrolled lesions were divided into groups of pure differentiated (pure D), pure undifferentiated (pure U), and mixed-type according to the proportion of the differentiated and undifferentiated components observed under a microscope. We reviewed the clinicopathological features, including age, sex, location, size, gross type, lymphovascular invasion, ulceration, and LNM, among the three groups. Furthermore, we evaluated the predictors of LNM in the mucosa-confined EGC.
RESULTS Of the 298 patients, 165 (55.4%) had mucosa-confined EGC and 133 (44.6%) had submucosa-invasive EGC. Only 13 (7.9%) cases of mucosa-confined EGC and 30 (22.6%) cases of submucosa-invasive EGC were observed to have LNM. The submucosal invasion (OR = 4.58, 95%CI: 1.23-16.97, P = 0.023), pure U type (OR = 4.97, 95%CI: 1.21-20.39, P = 0.026), and mixed-type (OR = 5.84, 95%CI: 1.05-32.61, P = 0.044) were independent risk factors for LNM in EGC. The rate of LNM in mucosa-confined EGC was higher in the mixed-type group (P = 0.012) and pure U group (P = 0.010) than in the pure D group, but no significant difference was found between the mixed-type group and pure U group (P = 0.739). Similarly, the rate of LNM in the submucosa-invasive EGC was higher in the mixed-type (P = 0.012) and pure U group (P = 0.009) than in the pure D group but was not significantly different between the mixed-type and pure U group (P = 0.375). Multivariate logistic analysis showed that only female sex (OR = 5.83, 95%CI: 1.64-20.70, P = 0.028) and presence of lymphovascular invasion (OR = 13.18, 95%CI: 1.39-125.30, P = 0.020) were independent risk factors for LNM in mucosa-confined EGC, while histological type was not an independent risk factor for LNM in mucosa-confined EGC (P = 0.106).
CONCLUSION For mucosal EGC, histological mixed-type is not an independent risk factor for LNM and could be managed in the same way as the undifferentiated type.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) cannot be completely eradicated due to the presence of covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) in the nuclei of infected hepatocytes. While quantification of intrahepatic cccDNA requires liver biopsies, serological markers can be non-invasive alternatives to reflect intrahepatic viral replicative activity. Recently, hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) has been advocated as a novel serum marker for disease monitoring and prognostication of CHB. AIM To examine the virological aspect and clinical application of HBcrAg with respect to the natural history and treatment of CHB. METHODS We reviewed all papers published in the PubMed journal list and abstracts from major international meetings that included the keyword "HBcrAg" or "hepatitis B core-related antigen" until March 2017. Selected studies were compared and summarised on the basis of existing theories, as well as the authors' experience. RESULTS HBcrAg exhibited good correlation with intrahepatic (ih) cccDNA, ih total hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA, serum HBV DNA and to a lesser extent HBV surface antigen (HBsAg). In situations where serum HBV DNA levels become undetectable or HBsAg loss is achieved, HBcrAg can still be detectable. This marker is helpful in differentiation of HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis from HBeAg-negative chronic infection, predicting spontaneous or treatment-induced HBeAg seroconversion, sustained response to nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA), risk of HBV reactivation in occult HBV infection under immunosuppressive therapies, and risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development as well as post-operative HCC recurrence. CONCLUSIONS HBcrAg is a potential surrogate marker of cccDNA. It may soon become a useful marker for disease monitoring, predicting treatment response and disease outcome of chronic hepatitis B.

Abstract
AIM Genome-wide association studies have revealed that single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DQ is associated with the clearance of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. We examined the effects of SNPs on the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and markers of HBV in chronic HBV infection. METHODS The SNPs of HLA-DQ (rs2856718 and rs7453920) were determined in 299 patients with chronic HBV infection. RESULTS In 224 hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative patients, those with rs2856718 genotype AG + GG had significantly lower hepatitis B core-related antigen levels (P = 0.0184), less frequent treatment with nucleotide/nucleoside analogs (NAs) (P = 0.0433), and less frequent HCC development (P = 0.0256) than those with genotype AA. Multivariate analysis selected age (P = 0.0460), platelet count (P = 0.0481), γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (P = 0.0030), and nucleotide/nucleoside analog treatment (P = 0.0003) as factors independently associated with HCC development. HBeAg-negative patients with rs7453920 genotype GG had significantly lower HBsAg levels (P < 0.0001), a higher prevalence of HBV genotype C (P = 0.0063), and a lower prevalence of the wild-type basal core promoter region (P = 0.0045) than those with genotype AA + AG. Multivariate analysis selected age (P < 0.0001), platelet count (P = 0.0021), HBV DNA levels (P = 0.0314), wild type of precore region (P = 0.0015), and rs7453920 (P < 0.0001) as factors independently associated with HBsAg levels. CONCLUSION This study revealed an association between rs2856718 and HCC development and an association between rs7453920 and HBsAg levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to study the dynamic changes of hepatitis B virus (HBV) core promoter/precore (CP/preC) sequences during antiviral treatment and their associations with virological responses. MATERIALS AND METHODS The baseline and 12-week CP/preC sequences (nts 1655-2014) were obtained from 52 chronic hepatitis B patients with positive hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg), who received a 104-week lamivudine and adefovir dipivoxil combination therapy. The mutations within the CP/preC were analyzed against genotype specific reference sequences. The nucleotide change rates in individuals during therapy were analyzed in a pairwise comparison manner. RESULTS There was no significant difference of the mutation rate at each nucleotide site between baseline and week 12 of treatment (P>0.05). The mutation rates of A1762T/G1764A and G1896A were found to decrease from 46.2% (24/52) at baseline to 36.5% (19/52) at week 12 (P=0.426) and from 28.8% (15/52) to 21.2% (11/52) (P=0.497), respectively. The nucleotide change rates varied from 0.0% - 7.8% in individuals [0.0% in Group 1 (N=26); 0.3% - 7.8% in Group 2 (N=26)] during the first 12-week treatment. HBV DNA levels in Group 2 were significantly lower than those in Group 1 throughout therapy (P<0.01) (e.g., 1.5±1.3log10 IU/ml vs. 2.6±1.0log10 IU/ml at week 104, P=0.001). At week 104 the rates of HBV DNA undetectable and HBeAg loss in Group 2 were significantly higher than those in Group 1 (P<0.05). Along with the increased nucleotide change rates, the rate of HBV DNA undetectable at week 104 tended to increase (odds ratio=0.323, 95% confidence interval=0.138-0.758, P<0.001). CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that the nucleotide changes within HBV CP/preC region during the first 12-week treatment might be associated with a better virological response.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rwanda is a central African country with about 12 million inhabitants. The 1994 genocide against the Tutsi destroyed much of the infrastructure, including the health system. Although this has improved significantly, many challenges remain to be addressed. In this study, the prevalence of serological markers of past and ongoing hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and HBV vaccine related immunity was investigated in samples from blood donors from all regions of Rwanda. METHODS The results from hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) analyses of all (45,061) blood donations collected countrywide in 2014 from 13,637 first time and 31,424 repeat blood donors were compiled. Samples from 581 HBsAg negative blood donors were selected for further analysis for antibodies against HBV, anti-HBs and anti-HBc. Additional 139 samples from HBsAg positive donors were analyzed for HBeAg/anti-HBe (132 samples) and for HBV DNA. The S-gene was amplified by PCR, products sequenced, and phylogenetic analysis was performed. RESULTS HBsAg was found in 4.1% of first time donors with somewhat higher prevalence among those from the Central and Eastern regions than from other parts of the country. Indications of past infection was found in 21% of the HBsAg negative donors, 4.3% had only anti-HBs suggesting HBV vaccination. HBeAg was detected in 28 (21%), anti-HBe in 97 (73%), and both HBeAg and anti-HBe in 4 of 132 HBsAg positive donors. HBV DNA was found in 85 samples, and the complete S-gene was sequenced in 58 of those. Phylogenetic analysis of the sequences revealed that all HBV strains belonged to subgenotype A1, and formed one clade in the phylogenetic tree. In addition, 12 strains from first time donors had a unique 18 amino acid deletion in the N-terminal part of the pre-S2 region. CONCLUSION This study indicated that the prevalence of hepatitis B is intermediate in Rwanda and that the vaccination coverage is relatively low in young adults. All surveyed Rwandan blood donors were infected with similar subgenotype A1 strains, and a high frequency of those with anti-HBe had detectable HBV DNA. Several strains had in addition a unique pre-S2 deletion, the virulence of which needs to be further studied.

Abstract
The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and to describe the HBV virological profiles among Senegalese HIV-1-infected patients. We conducted a retrospective study between 2006 and 2010 among Senegalese HIV-1-infected patients from the antiretroviral therapy cohort. Samples were screened using Determine(®) HBsAg or MONOLISA(®) POC test. The HBsAg positivity status was confirmed by Architect(®) HBsAg. Detection of HBeAg, anti-HBe Ab, and HBV DNA load were done for the HBsAg-positive samples. Then, Anti-HBcAb was tested for the HBsAg-negative samples. Microsoft Excel was used for data collection and statistical analyses were performed using Epi info 3.5.1. Overall, 466 HIV-infected patients were enrolled including 271 women (58.4%), and 193 men (41.6%) with a median age of 39 years (19-74 years). The global prevalence of HIV/HBV coinfection (HBsAg positive) was 8.8% (41/466). For HBsAg positives samples, the prevalence of HBeAg and the anti-HBeAb were, respectively, 24.4 and 69.2% and the median of HBV DNA viral load, for 27 HBsAg-positive samples, was 3.75 log10 copies/ml. The virological profiles were the following: 7, 15, and 5 patients infected, respectively, by a replicative virus, an inactive virus and a probably mutant virus. For HBsAg-negative samples, 83 out of 109 were positive for anti-HBcAb. This study showed a significant decrease of the prevalence of HBV/HIV coinfection between 2004 and 2014 (P = 0.003), which highlighted the performance of the Senegalese HBV vaccine program. However, implementing a systematic quantification of HBV DNA viral load could improve the monitoring of HBV-infected patient.
