Abstract
In this study, we aimed to study the effect of moxibustion (MOX) on microbiota dysbiosis and macrophage polarization, so as to unveil the mechanism underlying the therapeutic effect of MOX in the management of spinal cord injury (SCI). SCI animal models were established to study the effect of MOX. Accordingly, it was found that MOX treatment significantly suppressed the Ace index and Shannon index in the SCI group. Moreover, the reduced relative levels of Lactobacillales and Bifidobacteriales and the elevated relative level of Clostridiales in the SCI animals were mitigated by the treatment of MOX. The body weight, food intake, energy expenditure (EE) index and respiratory quotient (RQ) index of SCI mice were all evidently decreased, but the levels of interleukin (IL)-17, interferon (IFN)-γ, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and IL-1β were increased in the SCI group. Moreover, MOX treatment significantly mitigated the dysregulation of above factors in SCI mice. Accordingly, we found that the Basso Mouse Scale (BMS) score was negatively correlated with the level of Clostridiales while positively correlated with the level of Lactobacillales. The apoptotic index and caspase-3 level were both evidently increased in the SCI group, while the SCI+MOX group showed reduced levels of apoptotic index and caspase-3. Therefore, it can be concluded that the treatment with MOX can promote microbiota dysbiosis and macrophage polarization, thus alleviating spinal cord injury by down-regulating the expression of inflammatory cytokines.

Abstract
Background Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a kind of inflammatory bowel disease which is needed to be predicted. Objective To analyze various animal models of UC conditions and summarizes the animal selection, model progression, and pathogenic mechanisms of UC animal models. Methods We surveyed the research papers published in PubMed, Google Scholar, Baidu Scholar, CNKI, SciFinder, and Web of Science in the past 5 years and discussed the experimental animals, modeling methods, and pathogenic mechanisms. Results In the selection of experimental animals, rats are considered the best experimental animals. The mainstream modeling methods can be categorized into the chemical stimulation method, immune stimulation method, and compound method, among which the compound method is the most successful. In the study of the pathogenesis of UC, the pathogenesis of UC is due to various pathogenic factors, such as nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandins (PG), proinflammatory factors (IL, TNF-α), and intestinal flora. Conclusion The method of building an animal model of UC is well-established, providing a more targeted selection of animal models for future related experiments.

Abstract
The therapeutic effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on the comorbidity of visceral pain and anxiety in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is well known. It has been known that the ventral hippocampus (vHPC) and the cannabinoid type 1 receptors (CB1R) are involved in regulating anxiety and pain. Therefore, in this study, we determined whether EA reduces visceral pain and IBD-induced anxiety via CB1R in the vHPC. We found that EA alleviated visceral hyperalgesia and anxiety in TNBS-treated IBD mice. EA reversed over-expression of CB1R in IBD mice and decreased the percentage of CB1R-expressed GABAergic neurons in the vHPC. Ablating CB1R of GABAergic neurons in the vHPC alleviated anxiety in TNBS-treated mice and mimicked the anxiolytic effect of EA. While ablating CB1R in glutamatergic neurons in the vHPC induced severe anxiety in wild type mice and inhibited the anxiolytic effect of EA. However, ablating CB1R in either GABAergic or glutamatergic neurons in the vHPC did not alter visceral pain. In conclusion, we found CB1R in both GABAergic neurons and glutamatergic neurons are involved in the inhibitory effect of EA on anxiety but not visceral pain in IBD mice. EA may exert anxiolytic effect via downregulating CB1R in GABAergic neurons and activating CB1R in glutamatergic neurons in the vHPC, thus reducing the release of glutamate and inhibiting the anxiety circuit related to vHPC. Thus, our study provides new information about the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the therapeutic effect of EA on anxiety induced by IBD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review aims to assess whether moxibustion is effective and safe for gastrointestinal adverse effects, a common and thorny issue arising from chemotherapy. METHODS Seven electronic databases were searched up to August 28, 2021, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing moxibustion versus non-moxibustion treatments for various gastrointestinal adverse effects after chemotherapy. The Karnofsky performance status (KPS) and quality of life scores and the incidence of moxibustion-related adverse events were also investigated. Effects in meta-analyses were measured by risk ratios (RRs) or mean differences (MDs). RESULTS Thirty-two RCTs (n = 2990) were included. Compared to the controls, moxibustion significantly reduced the incidences of nausea/vomiting (RR 0.70, 95% CI 0.61-0.79), severe nausea/vomiting (RR 0.39, 95% CI 0.29-0.51), diarrhoea (RR 0.56, 95% CI 0.38-0.82), constipation (RR 0.59, 95% CI 0.44-0.78), and abdominal distension (RR 0.60, 95% CI 0.46-0.78). The KPS (MD 7.53, 95% CI 3.42-11.64) and quality of life (MD 8.88, 95% CI 0.96-16.80) scores were also significantly improved after moxibustion. The results did not support a benefit of moxibustion on inappetence (RR 0.69, 95% CI 0.40-1.22) or abdominal pain (RR 0.60, 95% CI 0.28-1.30). All adverse events related to moxibustion were mild. CONCLUSIONS Moderate-to very-low-quality evidence suggests that moxibustion may be safely used as an adjuvant treatment after chemotherapy to reduce the incidences of nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and abdominal distension and improve the performance status and quality of life in patients with malignant tumours. Its effects on abdominal pain and inappetence are uncertain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic migraine is a disabling condition that negatively affects many aspects of migraineurs' lives. Patients who use pharmacological agents experience various side effects. Some studies have reported clinical improvement following wet cupping therapy in migraine patients. This study examined the effectiveness of wet cupping therapy on headache severity and its complications in patients with migraine. METHODS In this study, a total of 29 patients previously diagnosed with migraine were treated with wet cupping therapy and followed up for headache severity. The severity of pain was measured before therapy, 1 h after therapy, and one month after therapy. The wet cupping therapy was performed by an experienced nurse who was not part of the research team. RESULTS The mean age of the patients was 36.17 (Sta. Deviation: 10.74 years; range: 22-68 years), and on average, patients had experienced migraine for 11.14 years. The severity of headache pain was decreased significantly from 6.66 (very intense pain) before cupping therapy to 2.48 (discomforting pain) 1 h after cupping therapy and 0.72 (very mild pain) one month after cupping therapy (p<0.001). The observed complications were skin pigmentation (6.9%), skin scarring (24.1%), and itching in the cupping region (31.0%). CONCLUSIONS The present study suggests a significant improvement in the severity of headache in migraine patients 1 h and one month after wet cupping therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ulcerative colitis (UC), also known as chronic nonspecific UC, is an inflammatory bowel disease characterized by diffuse colonic mucosal inflammation. The incidence and prevalence of UC have risen markedly, and the disease seriously affects the quality of life of patients, and poses a great burden on the world health care infrastructure and economy. CASE SUMMARY We present a 60-year-old man who had ulcerative colitis for more than 10 years, with recurrent abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea with mucopurulent stool. The treatments with sulfasalazine, mesalazine, and traditional Chinese medicine were not effective, and herbs-partitioned moxibustion (HPM) was then applied at "Zhongwan" (RN12), "Tianshu"(ST25), and "Qihai" (RN6) once a day for about 30 min, 3 times per week, for 6 mo.His main clinical symptoms of abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea with mucopurulent stool gradually improved, and the mucosa had nearly healed, as observed under endoscopy by the 6th mo. The patient's condition was alleviated without relapsing during the subsequent 3-mo follow-up period. HPM showed a significant effect in the treatment of ulcerative colitis in this case, and the effect would help the patient to maintain remission for at least 3 mo. CONCLUSION A series of symptoms of this UC patient significantly improved with the treatment of HPM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Warm needle acupuncture (WNA) is commonly used in primary osteoporosis (OP) management in China. The evidence of its effectiveness needs to be systematically reviewed. OBJECTIVE The aim of the meta-analysis was to evaluate whether using WNA alone or combined with conventional medicine benefits primary OP. METHODS PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register, Medline, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang and VIP databases were searched from their inception through 30 June 2016. RCTs applying WNA independently or as an adjunct to conventional medicine, compared with conventional medicine alone, were included. Primary outcomes were bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar vertebrae, femoral neck, Ward's triangle and greater trochanter. The secondary outcome was chronic pain measured by VAS score. Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan V.5.3 software. RESULTS Nine RCTs involving 572 participants were included. When WNA was used as an adjunct to conventional medicine, meta-analysis revealed a statistical difference in favour of increasing BMD of the lumbar vertebrae (mean difference (MD)=0.06, 95% CI 0.03 to 0.08, P<0.001). WNA increased BMD of the femoral neck (MD 0.14, 95% CI 0.08 to 0.21, P<0.001) and greater trochanter (MD 0.09, 95% CI 0.04 to 0.15, P<0.001) when used alone, and additionally decreased VAS scores (MD=-1.10, 95% CI -1.14 to -1.06, P<0.001) when used as an adjunct to conventional medicine. However, the safety of WNA was not specifically reported. CONCLUSIONS WNA may have beneficial effects on BMD and VAS scores of patients with primary OP. However, all included trials were at high risk of bias and of low quality. Further rigorous studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of WNA for primary OP treatment.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the relationship between the effects of electroacupuncture/moxibustion and the balance of Th17/Treg in treating ulcerative colitis (UC) and to preliminary compare the effects of the above two methods. METHODS DSS-induced UC mice were treated by electroacupuncture and moxibustion. Disease activity index (DAI) was scored; intestinal pathological structure and ultrastructure were observed. The levels of IL-2, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17A, IL-17F, and TGF-β in plasma were measured by ELISA. The percentages of Treg and Th17 in spleen lymphocytes were analyzed by flow cytometry. Also, the expressions of TLR2, TLR4, RORγt, and FOXP3 in the distal colon were detected by immunohistochemistry or western blot. RESULTS Both electroacupuncture and moxibustion can relieve UC. These effects are further supported by ELISA results. In addition, the ratio of Treg and Th17 in spleen lymphocytes and the expression of TLR2 and TLR4 are significantly improved. Also, the expression of RORγt and FOXP3 in distal colon were improved. Besides, the effect of moxibustion is better than that of electroacupuncture on TLR2, TLR4, and FOXP3 expression (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Both electroacupuncture and moxibustion may ameliorate UC by regulating the balance of Th17/Treg. Whether moxibustion has better efficacy than electroacupuncture needs further study.

Abstract
Complementary and alternative medicine is frequently used by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients; most common are massage, acupuncture, and moxibustion therapy. Massage therapy is poorly studied in IBD patients; therefore, its benefits remain unknown. Acupuncture and moxibustion therapy have been shown to improve inflammation and symptoms in animal and human studies. However, current clinical trials of acupuncture and moxibustion are of insufficient quality to recommend them as alternative therapy. Nonetheless, because these therapies seem generally to be safe, they may have a role as complementary to conventional therapy.

Abstract
Reperfusion after tourniquet use can induce inflammation and cause remote organ injury. We evaluated the therapeutic effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on inflammatory mediators and lung function in patients receiving lower limb tourniquets. Forty patients undergoing unilateral lower extremity surgery with tourniquet were randomly assigned to two groups: the TEAS group and ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) group. The C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2), C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 8 (CXCL8), interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and arterial blood gas analysis were measured preoperatively and 6 h after tourniquet removal. The levels of CXCL8, IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α, and CCL2 were significantly increased compared to baseline values in both groups, but the increase was significantly smaller in the TEAS group. In the TEAS group, the partial pressure of oxygen and arterial-alveolar oxygen tension ratio were significantly decreased, and the alveolar-arterial oxygen tension difference and respiratory index were significantly increased, compared to those in the I/R group at 6 h after reperfusion. In conclusion, TEAS diminished the upregulation of proinflammatory factors in response to lower limb ischemia-reperfusion and improved pulmonary gas exchange.

Abstract
Patients and physicians often have many questions regarding the role of complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs), or nonallopathic therapies, for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). CAMs of various forms are used by more than half of patients with IBD during some point in their disease course. We summarize the available evidence for the most commonly used and discussed CAMs. We discuss evidence for the effects of herbs (such as cannabis and curcumin), probiotics, acupuncture, exercise, and mind-body therapy. There have been few controlled studies of these therapies, which have been limited by their small sample sizes; most studies have been uncontrolled. In addition, there has been a lack of quality control for herbal preparations. It has been a challenge to design rigorous, randomized, placebo-controlled trials, in part owing to problems of adequate blinding for psychological interventions, acupuncture, and exercise. These barriers have limited the acceptance of CAMs by physicians. However, such therapies might be used to supplement conventional therapies and help ease patient symptoms. We conclude that physicians should understand the nature of and evidence for CAMs for IBD so that rational advice can be offered to patients who inquire about their use. CAMs have the potential to aid in the treatment of IBD, but further research is needed to validate these approaches.

Abstract
Objective. This study explored the mechanism of herb-partitioned moxibustion (HM) on dextran sulfate sodium- (DSS-) induced ulcerative colitis (UC) from the miRNA perspective. Methods. Rats were randomly divided into 3 groups [normal control (NC) group, UC model (UC) group, and herb-partitioned moxibustion (UCHM) group]. The UC and UCHM groups were administered 4% DSS for 7 days. The UCHM group received HM at the Tianshu (bilateral, ST25). The effect of HM on UC was observed and the miRNA expression profile in the colon tissues was analyzed. Results. Compared with the UC group, the body weights were significantly higher in the UCHM group on day 14 (P < 0.001); the macroscopic colon injury scores and microscopic histopathology scores in the UCHM group decreased (P < 0.05); and there were 15 differentially expressed miRNAs in the UCHM group. The changes in miR-184 and miR-490-5p expression levels on the UC were reversed by HM intervention. Validation using qRT-PCR showed that two miRNAs expression trend was consistent with the sequencing results. Conclusion. HM at ST25 might regulate miR-184 and miR-490-5p expression, act on the transcription of their target genes to regulate inflammatory signaling pathways, and attenuate inflammation and tissue injury in the colons of rats with DSS-induced UC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical evidence suggests that acupuncture improves symptoms in persistent allergic rhinitis, but the physiologic basis of these improvements is not well understood. OBJECTIVE A randomized, sham-controlled trial of acupuncture for persistent allergic rhinitis in adults investigated possible modulation of mucosal immune responses. METHODS A total of 151 individuals were randomized into real and sham acupuncture groups (who received twice-weekly treatments for 8 weeks) and a no acupuncture group. Various cytokines, neurotrophins, proinflammatory neuropeptides, and immunoglobulins were measured in saliva or plasma from baseline to 4-week follow-up. RESULTS Statistically significant reduction in allergen specific IgE for house dust mite was seen only in the real acupuncture group, from 18.87 kU/L (95% CI, 10.16-27.58 kU/L) to 17.82 kU/L (95% CI, 9.81-25.83 kU/L) (P = .04). A mean (SE) statistically significant down-regulation was also seen in proinflammatory neuropeptide substance P (SP) 18 to 24 hours after the first treatment from 408.74 (299.12) pg/mL to 90.77 (22.54) pg/mL (P = .04). No significant changes were seen in the other neuropeptides, neurotrophins, or cytokines tested. Nasal obstruction, nasal itch, sneezing, runny nose, eye itch, and unrefreshed sleep improved significantly in the real acupuncture group (postnasal drip and sinus pain did not) and continued to improve up to 4-week follow-up. CONCLUSION Acupuncture modulated mucosal immune response in the upper airway in adults with persistent allergic rhinitis. This modulation appears to be associated with down-regulation of allergen specific IgE for house dust mite, which this study is the first to report. Improvements in nasal itch, eye itch, and sneezing after acupuncture are suggestive of down-regulation of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1. Abstract
Electroacupuncture at Shangjuxu (ST37) and Tianshu (ST25) can improve visceral hypersensitivity in rats. Colorectal distension was used to establish a rat model of chronic visceral hypersensitivity. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect P2X2 and P2X3 receptor expression in dorsal root ganglia from rats with chronic visceral hypersensitivity. Results demonstrated that abdominal withdrawal reflex scores obviously increased following establishment of the model, indicating visceral hypersensitivity. Simultaneously, P2X2 and P2X3 receptor expression increased in dorsal root ganglia. After bilateral electroacupuncture at Shangjuxu and Tianshu, abdominal withdrawal reflex scores and P2X2 and P2X3 receptor expression decreased in rats with visceral hypersensitivity. These results indicated that electroacupuncture treatment improved visceral hypersensitivity in rats with irritable bowel syndrome by reducing P2X2 and P2X3 receptor expression in dorsal root ganglia.

Abstract
Electroacupuncture at Shangjuxu (ST37) and Tianshu (ST25) was reported to improve visceral hypersensitivity in rats. Colorectal distension was utilized to generate a rat model of chronic visceral hypersensitivity in irritable bowel syndrome. Results showed that abdominal withdrawal reflex scores noticeably increased after model establishment. Simultaneously, P2X4 receptor immureactivity significantly increased in the colon and spinal cord. Electroacupuncture and pinaverium bromide therapy both markedly decreased abdominal withdrawal reflex scores in rats with visceral hypersensitivity, and significantly decreased P2X4 receptor immunoreactivity in the colon and spinal cord. These data suggest that electroacupuncture treatment can improve visceral hypersensitivity in rats with irritable bowel syndrome by diminishing P2X4 receptor immunoreactivity in the colon and spinal cord.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic colonic inflammation that displays symptoms like diarrhea and weight loss. Acupuncture has been widely accepted by Western countries for the treatment of pain. Here, we analyzed efficacy and mechanism of electroacupuncture (EA) on trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid- (TNBS-) induced colitis in mice. Mice were intrarectally administered with 250 mg/kg TNBS and electroacupunctured at Quze (PC3) and Neiguan (PC6) acupoints, which have been applied for gastrointestinal disorders. Gene expression profiles in colons and spleens were analyzed by microarray for the elucidation of mechanism of EA. Our data showed that EA at PC3 and PC6 improved macroscopic and microscopic features of colitis and the improvement displayed a frequency-dependent manner. Administration of TNBS upregulated the expression of most cytokine genes in colons, while EA downregulated the expression of TNBS-induced cytokine genes. Pathway analysis showed that EA significantly affected inflammatory pathways in colons and immunity-associated pathway in spleens. Immunohistochemical staining further showed that EA decreased the expression of interleukin-1 β and nuclear factor- κ B. In conclusion, this is the first study reporting the global gene expression profiles of EA on TNBS-induced colitis. Our findings suggested that inflammatory and immunity pathways were involved in the anti-inflammatory mechanism of EA on colitis induced by TNBS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peripheral neuropathy is the dose limiting toxicity of bortezomib in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). OBJECTIVES To examine the safety, feasibility and efficacy of acupuncture in reducing bortezomib-induced peripheral neuropathy (BIPN) symptoms. METHODS Patients with MM experiencing persistent BIPN ≥grade 2 despite adequate medical intervention and discontinuation of bortezomib received 10 acupuncture treatments for 10 weeks (2×/week for 2 weeks, 1×/week for 4 weeks, and then biweekly for 4 weeks). Responses were assessed by the Clinical Total Neuropathy Score (TNSc), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy/Gynecologic Oncology Group-Neurotoxicity (FACT/GOG-Ntx) questionnaire, and the Neuropathy Pain Scale (NPS). Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to test for monotonic decline in scores on each of the measures. Serial serum levels of proinflammatory and neurotrophic cytokines were obtained at baseline and weeks 1, 2, 4, 8, and 14. RESULTS Twenty-seven patients with MM were enrolled in the trial. There were no adverse events associated with the acupuncture treatments. TNSc data were deemed invalid and therefore were not reported. At weeks 10 and 14, FACT/GOG-Ntx and NPS showed significant reduction suggesting decreased pain, and improved function (P values were <.0001 for both FACT/GOG-Ntx and NPS at weeks 10 and 14). However, nerve conduction studies did not significantly change between baseline assessment and end of study. There was no correlation in serum cytokines for responders versus none responders. CONCLUSIONS Acupuncture is safe, feasible and produces subjective improvements in patients' symptoms. A follow-up randomized controlled trial is warranted.

Abstract
ST25 is a key acupoint used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis by moxibustion stimulation, but the biophysical mechanism underlying its effects is still unknown. The aim of the present study was to explore the biophysical properties of ST25 acupoint stimulated by moxibustion in a rat model of ulcerative colitis. The infrared radiation intensity of fourteen wavelengths of ST25 showed significant differences between the normal and model control groups. The intensity of infrared radiation of forty wavelengths showed significant differences compared with the corresponding control points in normal rats. The intensity of infrared radiation of twenty-eight wavelengths showed significant differences compared with the corresponding control points in model rats. The intensity of infrared radiation of nine wavelengths in the herb-partition moxibustion group, eighteen wavelengths in the ginger-partition moxibustion group, seventeen wavelengths in the garlic-partition moxibustion group, and fourteen wavelengths in the warming moxibustion group of the left ST25 showed significant differences compared with that of the model control group. For the right-hand-side ST25, these values were 33, 33, 2, and 8 wavelengths, respectively. This indicated that one possible biophysical mechanism of moxibustion on ST25 in ulcerative colitis model rats might involve changes in the intensity of infrared radiation of ST25 at different wavelengths.

Abstract
PURPOSE Moxibustion therapy is a commonly used treatment in Oriental medicine. Here, we provide evidence for the safety of long-term moxibustion therapy. SUBJECTS and design: Forty-five subjects (10 men and 35 women) who complained of chronic fatigue were divided into control (5 men and 15 women) and experimental groups (5 men and 20 women) in a randomized double-blind setting. The experimental group was treated with moxibustion to CV4 and CV8 for 4 weeks (administered three times per week); the control group was exposed to simulated burning of moxibustion. Complete blood counts, blood chemistry, and urinalysis results were analyzed before and after each trial. RESULTS The absolute and relative number of peripheral blood cells did not differ between the pre- and posttreatment measurements of either group. No significant changes in blood chemistry or urinalysis data were observed in either group. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that indirect moxibustion has no effect on blood chemistry or urine and is safe for clinical use. These data could be used as reference data for further moxibustion studies.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which is fundamentally different from Western medicine, has been widely investigated using various approaches. Cellular- or molecular-based imaging has been used to investigate and illuminate the various challenges identified and progress made using therapeutic methods in TCM. Insight into the processes of TCM at the cellular and molecular changes and the ability to image these processes will enhance our understanding of various diseases of TCM and will provide new tools to diagnose and treat patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Various TCM therapies including herbs and formulations, acupuncture and moxibustion, massage, Gua Sha, and diet therapy have been analyzed using positron emission tomography, single photon emission computed tomography, functional magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound and optical imaging. These imaging tools have kept pace with developments in molecular biology, nuclear medicine, and computer technology. RESULTS We provide an overview of recent developments in demystifying ancient knowledge - like the power of energy flow and blood flow meridians, and serial naturopathies - which are essential to visually and vividly recognize the body using modern technology. CONCLUSIONS In TCM, treatment can be individualized in a holistic or systematic view that is consistent with molecular imaging technologies. Future studies might include using molecular imaging in conjunction with TCM to easily diagnose or monitor patients naturally and noninvasively.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the effects of moxibustion on the morphology and function of mast cells (MC) at Tianshu (ST25) in rats with trinitro-benzene-sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis.
METHODS: A total of 53 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into a normal group and experimental group. In the experimental group, a rat model of TNBS-induced colitis was established, and the rats were then randomly divided into a model group, moxibustion group, moxibustion plus disodium cromoglycate (M + DC) group and moxibustion plus normal saline (M + NS) group. Rats in the moxibustion group received suspended moxibustion at bilateral ST25 for 10 min, once a day for 7 d. Rats in the M + DC and M + NS groups were pretreated with disodium cromoglycate and normal saline at bilateral ST25, respectively, and were then concurrently subjected to the same treatment as rats in the moxibustion group. The hematoxylin-eosin staining method was used to observe histology of the colon and the toluidine blue-improved method was used to observe mast cells at ST25 acupoint areas.
RESULTS: An improvement in colonic injury in the moxibustion group was observed and the degranulation ratio of MC at ST25 acupoint was markedly higher in the moxibustion group than in the model group (45.91 ± 11.41 vs 32.58 ± 8.28, P < 0.05). After inhibition of degranulation of MC at ST25 by disodium cromoglycate, no improvement in colon tissue injury was observed.
CONCLUSION: Moxibustion exerted its effect on healing impaired colonic mucosa in rats with TNBS-induced colitis by increasing the degranulation ratio of local MC, but had little effect on the morphology of MC at ST25 acupoint.

Abstract
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a paralyzing disorder that is characterized by the progressive degeneration and death of motor neurons. Acupuncture or electroacupuncture (EA) has been used for the treatment of various conditions including osteoarthritis, asthma, and other types of chronic pain conditions. It has been hypothesized that acupuncture exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive effects on inflammatory reactions processes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether acupuncture at a specific acupoint could produce anti-inflammatory responses and suppress motor neuron loss in the hG93ASOD1 mouse, commonly used as a model for inherited ALS. We delivered EA at the Zusanli (ST36) acupuncture point in the symptomatic hSOD1G93A animal model. The EA-treated mutant hSOD1 transgenic mice showed decreases in microglial cell activity and TNF-alpha expression in the spinal cord and brain stem. Furthermore, EA significantly improved motor activity compared to the control group and reduced neuronal cell loss in hSOD1G93A mice. Our research suggests a potential functional link between EA therapy and anti-neuroinflammatory response in an ALS animal model.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Acupuncture has traditionally been used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease in China and is increasingly applied in Western countries. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of active ulcerative colitis (UC). MATERIAL AND METHODS In a prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial 29 patients with mild to moderately active UC (mean age 37.8 +/- 12.0 years) were randomly assigned to receive either traditional acupuncture and moxa (TCM group, n = 15), or sham acupuncture consisting of superficial needling at non-acupuncture points (control group, CG, n = 14). All patients were treated in 10 sessions over a period of 5 weeks and followed-up for 16 weeks. The main outcome measure was the change in the Colitis Activity Index (CAI) after treatment; secondary outcome measures were changes in quality of life, general well-being and serum markers of inflammation. RESULTS In the TCM group, the CAI decreased from 8.0 (+/- 3.7) to 4.2 (+/- 2.4) points and in the control group from 6.5 (+/- 3.4) to 4.8 (+/- 3.9) points (TCM versus CG: p = 0.048). In both groups these changes were associated with significant improvements in general well-being (TCM group: from 3.0 (+/- 1.8) to 1.8 (+/- 1.0); CG: from 3.2 (+/- 1.9) to 2.2 (+/- 1.7)) and quality of life (TCM group: from 146 (+/- 23) to 182 (+/- 18); CG: from 157 (+/- 20) to 183 (+/- 23)). No significant differences between the TCM and CG were found regarding these secondary outcome measures. CONCLUSIONS Differences in efficacy between traditional acupuncture and sham acupuncture were small and significant only for CAI as the main outcome measure. Both traditional and sham acupuncture seem to offer an additional therapeutic benefit in patients with mild to moderately active UC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Asthma is a worldwide disabling chronic inflammatory airway disease characterized by an intense eosinophilic inflammatory infiltrate on bronchial mucous membranes. Among the complementary therapeutic approaches to asthma, acupuncture has been widely used. OBJECTIVE Here we used a rat pulmonary hypersensitivity experimental model that mimics human asthma in order to address whether electroacupuncture (EA) treatment could reduce the inflammatory process. MATERIALS AND METHODS Experimental animals were divided in four groups: control (C), immobilized (I), sham-acupuncture (SA), and acupuncture (A). All rats were sensitized with heat-solidified hen egg white implant. Using clinical acupuncture points, EA treatment began 2 days after antigen priming and was repeated on alternate days for 2 weeks. Subsequently, animals were challenged by inhalation with aggregated ovalbumin and sacrificed 24 hours later when blood samples, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and lungs were collected. RESULTS Histopathologic analyses showed that peribronchial and perivascular inflammatory cell infiltrates were significantly lower in group A compared to groups SA and I (shown to be similar to group C). Furthermore, BAL total cell count and percentage of polymorphonuclears (as well as the differential counts of neutrophils and eosinophils) were significantly reduced in group A compared to group I. Corsticosterone plasma levels were similar in all groups. CONCLUSIONS Taken together these results show that EA efficiently diminishes the bronchial immune-mediated inflammation induced in rats and that this effect is dependent on the choice of specific acupoints.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the effects of Ginkgo biloba extract (Egb) on cytokine profile produced by splenocytes, colonic mucosa and serum and to study the main mechanism of EGb in protection of TNBS-induced ulcerative colitis in rats.
METHODS: A rat ulcerative colitis model was induced by 2.4.6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS). All rats were divided into four groups: normal, TNBS, TNBS+NS, and TNBS+EGb. The macroscopical and histological changes of the colon were evaluated. The IL-12, IFN-α and IL-4 produced by splenocytes, colonic mulosal and serum were analyzed with ELISA.
RESULTS: In TNBS+EGb group, the macroscopical and histological scores were significantly lower than those of TNBS group (2.83±0.94 vs 5.33±1.50, P < 0.01, 1.92±0.67 vs 4.33±0.98, P < 0.01). In the TNBS+EGb group, a lower level of IFN-α production in splenocytes (60±21.5 vs 125.6±14.6, P < 0.01); colonic mucosa (202.8±49.6 vs 431.8±57.6, P < 0.01) and serum (8.6±1.4 vs 13.5±1.7, P < 0.01) was noticed as compared with TNBS group. In comparison with TNBS group, significantly increased IL-4 was noticed (splenocytes: 11.2±1.3 vs 6.05±1.5, P < 0.01; colonic mucosa: 10.2±1.9 vs 6.9±1.4, P < 0.01; serum: 7.9±1.8 vs 4.2±1.1, P < 0.01) in TNBS+EGb group. IL-12 production by serum in TNBS+EGb group was lower than that of TNBS group (8.2±2.2 vs 25.8±4.8, P < 0.01). The ratio of IL-12/IL-4 was lower in TNBS+EGb group compared with TNBS group (serum: 1.13±0.49 vs 6.4±1.8, P < 0.01). The ratio of IL-12/IL-4 was lower than that in TNBS+EGb group compared with TNBS group (splenocytes: 5.2±2.0 vs 21.9±4.9, P < 0.01; colonic mucosa: 20.9±7.97 vs 65.9±18, P < 0.01; serum: 1.1±0.3 vs 3.4±0.8, P < 0.01).
CONCLUSION: TNBS-induced ulceratived colitis is a Th1 type dominant (IL-12 overproduction)murine model; EGb has protective effects on ulcerative colitis of rat by suppresses of increased IL-12 and IFN-α and maintaines the balance of helper T cell 1 with helper T cell 2.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effects of Allitridi on lymphocyte apoptosis and its regulatory gene expression in rat ulcerative colitis.
METHODS Rat colitis model was induced by 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS). The apoptotic cells were visualized by TUNEL. Bcl-2 and Bax protein expression in colon tissue was examined by immunohistochemistry. Biochemistry was used to detect the nitrogen monoxide (NO) activity in the mucosa, At the same time, the macroscopical and histological changes of the colon were evaluated.
RESULTS In TNBS group, the content of nitrogen monoxide, the positive cell quantity of expression of Bcl-2 and the apoptotic cell quantity were higher than those in both normal group and TNBS+Alt group (P<0.01), but Bax positive cell quantity was lower than that in normal group (P<0.01).
CONCLUSION Allitridi has protective effects on ulcerative colitis of rat by promoting apoptosis of lymphocytes in lamina propria and cleaning NO free radical.

Abstract
Acupuncture has a beneficial effect when treating many diseases and painful conditions, and therefore is thought to be useful as a complementary therapy or to replace generally accepted pharmacological intervention. The attributive effect of acupuncture has been investigated in inflammatory diseases, including asthma, rhinitis, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, epicondylitis, complex regional pain syndrome type 1 and vasculitis. Large randomised trials demonstrating the immediate and sustained effect of acupuncture are missing. Mechanisms underlying the ascribed immunosuppressive actions of acupuncture are reviewed in this communication. The acupuncture-controlled release of neuropeptides from nerve endings and subsequent vasodilative and anti-inflammatory effects through calcitonine gene-related peptide is hypothesised. The complex interactions with substance P, the analgesic contribution of beta-endorphin and the balance between cell-specific pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines tumour necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-10 are discussed.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the role of NF-kB in the pathogenesis of 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis in rats.
METHODS: Ulcerative colitis model in rat was induced by TNBS. The expression of NF-kB, TNF-α and ICAM-1 protein in colon tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry. The myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in colon mucosa was detected by biochemistry. The pathological changes in the colon were examined, the relationships among the activity of NF-κB, TNF-α, ICAM-1, and MPO were evaluated.
RESULTS: The activity of NF-kB and the expression of TNF-α, ICAM-1 in rats with TNBS-induced colitis was higher than that in normal control (P < 0.01), a very significant correlation between the expression of NF-kB: 52.14±9.81±30.26±10.20, 60.73±13.41, 45.24±10.86 vs 13.31±4.76, 16.95±6.83, 11.61±4.85, 14.10±5.76; with TNF-α, 74.50±11.20, 48.11±5.95, 84.09±14.52, 53.40±8.79 vs 16.99±5.48, 20.04±6.76, 10.13±1.79, 16.03±6.21; ICAM-1: 68.15±7.25, 44.34±7.54, 77.69±8.09, 47.01±8.82 vs 15.34±4.03, 17.50±6.95, 10.33±2.38, 13.41±4.91, MPO: 1.69±0.11, 0.71±0.06 vs 0.39±0.07, 0.31±0.08; ICAM-1, MPO activity, macroscopic and histological changes in TNBS-induced colitis was found, respectively (r = 0.9304, 0.8680, 0.6865, 0.9 292, 0.8 462; P < 0.001 or P < 0.005).
CONCLUSION: NF-κB may play an important role in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis in rats.

METHODS: Eighty-nine patients (males 51, females 38, age 23-57 years) with severe ulcerative colitis were examinated with colonoscope, barium enema, the diagnosis was confirmed histologically. Bacterial infection was excluded through twice consecutive stool cultures. And ameba, schistosomiasis, gastroentertinal cancer and endocrine diseases were also excluded. Ulcerative colitis was found in sigmoid (n = 45), descending colon (n = 21), colon splenic flexure (n = 15) and transverse colon (n = 8). Its clinical categories included relapse (n = 44), persistent (n = 30) and initial (n = 15). Parenteral hyperalimentation was applied to patients once diagnosis was made; three days later, fasting venous blood was drawed to test serum motilin (MTL), peptide YY (PYY) and IgG by radioimmunoassy, and serum α1, α2 and g glycoproteins by electrophoresis.
RESULTS: After 4-week period therapy with parental hypernutrition, 27 cases (30%) recovered completely, 48 (54%) improved, and 14(16%) failed to therapy, the total effective rate was 84%. Level of serum MTL, PYY, IgG, and α1-glycoprotein in colitis patients were significant higher than those in control, α 2-glycoprotein was lower than that in control (P < 0.05). All these abnormal data became normal after treatment. However, no difference of these parameters was observed between patients who were effective to therapy and those who failed to therapy (P < 0.05). No obvious change in serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and -glycoprotein was existed in all patients (P > 0.05). Level of serum albumin was increased(P < 0.05), and the histological change in ulcerative colitis was significantly improved after treatment.
CONCLUSION: The parenteral hyperalimentation therapy improved effectively serum levels of motilin, PYY, IgG and glycoproteins in patients with severe ulcerative colitis.

Abstract
AIM: To estimate the effect of a therapeutic vaccine against pancreatic carcinoma based on dendritic cell (DC) vaccine modified with tumor lysate and Interleukin-18 gene.
METHODS: The BALB/C mice model of pancreatic carcinoma was induced with DMBA. DC vaccine was constructed through pulsed with tumor lysate and transfected by the recombinant adenoviral vector encoding IL-18 gene. The immnotherapeutic effects of DC vaccine on mice with pancreatic carcinoma were assessed (divided into DC-IL18-Lysate group, DC-Lysate group, DC-IL18 group, DC group, PBS group).
RESULTS: After vaccination of the DC vaccine, the concentration of IL-18 and IFN-γ were 2161 ± 439 ng·L-1 and 435 ± 72 ng·L-1 in DC-IL18-Lysate group and there was significant difference compared with other groups (P < 0.01). After vaccination of the DC vaccine, the transplanted tumors were observed on 30 d in DC-Lysate groups, on 16 d in DC-IL18 groups, on 3 d in control group, but mice remained tumor-free for at least 50 d in DC-IL18-Lysate group and there was significant difference between DC-IL18-Lysate group and other groups (P < 0.01). The median survival exceeds 62 d in DC-IL18-Lysate group. But the median survival was 48.6 d in DC-Lysate group, 33 d in DC-IL18 group, 17 d in PBS group. The survival period was obviously prolonged in DC-IL18-Lysate group than in other groups (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). The weight of pancreatic tumor was 0.22 ± 0.083 g in DC-IL18-Lysate group, 1.45 ± 0.74 g in DC-Lysate group, 1.89 ± 1.34 g in DC-IL18 group, 3.0 ± 1.6 g in DC group, 2.9 ± 2.0 g in PBS group and the weight of tumor obviously reduced in DC-IL18-Lysate group than in other groups (P < 0.05, P < 0.01).
CONCLUSION: DC vaccine modified with tumor lysate and Interleukin-18 gene can induce a specific and effective immune response against pancreatic carcinoma cell.

Abstract
AIM: To display the thermoimages of the body surface in experimental cholecystitis, to observe the body surface temperature reaction in visceral disorders, and to study if the theory of body surface-viscera correlation is true and the mechanism of temperature changes along the meridians.
METHODS: By injecting bacteria suspension into the stricture bile duct and gallbladder, 21 rabbits were prepared as acute pyogenic cholangiocholecystitis models, with another 8 rabbits prepared by the same process except without injection of bacteria suspension as control. The body surface infrared thermoimages were continuously observed on the hair shaven rabbit skin with AGA-782 thermovision 24 h before, 1-11 d after and (2, 3 wk) 4 wk after the operation with a total of over 10 records of thermoimages.
RESULTS: Twelve cases out of 21 rabbits with cholecystitis revealed bi-lateral longitudinal high temperature lines in its trunk; with negative findings in the control group. The high-temperature line appeared on d1-d2, first in the right trunk, after the preparation of the model, about 7 d after the model preparation, the lines appeared at the left side too, persisting for 4 wk. The hyper-temperature line revealed 1.1-2.7 °C higher than before the model preparation, 0.7-2.5 °C higher than the surrounding skin. The length of the high temperature line might reach a half length of the body trunk, or as long as the whole body itself.
CONCLUSION: The appearance of the longitudinal high temperature lines at the lateral aspects of the trunk in the experimental group is directly bound up with the experimental animals pyogenic cholecystitis, with its running course quite similar to that of the Gallbladder Channel of Foot Shaoyang, but different to the zones of hyperalgesia and site of referred pain in cholecystitis.

Abstract
AIM: To analyze the characteristics of ulcerative colitis (UC) in China.
METHODS: From 1981 to 2000, a total of 10218 patients of UC reported in Chinese medical literature and including our cases diagnosed were analyzed according to the diagnostic criteria of Lennard-Jones.
RESULTS: The number of cases increased by 3.08 times over the past 10 years (2506 patients were diagnosed from 1981 to 1990 while 7512 patients were diagnosed from 1991 to 2000).Lesion range were described in 7966 patients, 5592 (70.20%) were proctosigmoiditis or proctitis, 1792( 22.50%) left-sided colitis, 582(7.30%) pancolitis. Among the 8122 patients, 2826 (34.8%) had first episode, 4272 (52.6%) had chronic relapse, 869 (10.7%) were of chronic persist type, 154 (1.9%) were of acute fulminant type. The course of the illness were described in 5867 patients, 4427(75.5%) were less than 5 years, 910 (15.5%) between 5 and 10 years, 530 (9.1%) more than 10 years. Six hundred and sixteen patients patients(6.1%) had extraintestinal manifestations.The mean age at the diagnosis was 40.7 years(range 6-80 years, and the peak ages 30-49 years). The male to female ratio was1.09. Among 270 patients diagnosed in our hospital, 36 had histories of smoking, there was no negative association between the severity of UC and smoking (P > 0.05), 21 smokers were followed up for one year, 15 of them had given up smoking when the disease were diagnosed, and one year later, 7 patients relapsed, another 6 patients continued smoking, and one year later, 2 patients relapsed. Among 270 UC patients diagnosed in our hospital, 4 patients(1.48%) from 2 families had familial history of UC. Treatment was mentioned in 6859 patients, only 5-ASA and/or corticosteroid only in 1276 patients(18.6%), only Chinese herbs in 1377 patients(20.1%), combined Chinese and western medicine in 4056 patients(59.1%), surgery was performed in 87 patients(1.3%), other treatments in 63 patients(0.9%).
CONCLUSIONS: In China, number of UC patients increased significantly in the past 10 years. Lesions are commonly located to left side colon. The course is short with rare extraintestinal manifestations. The age of onset is relatively high. Males and females are nearly equally affected. No negative relation was found between smoking and severity of the disease. Familial relatives are rarely involved Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) is widely used in the treatment of UC.

Abstract
AIM: To study the effect of cholecystokinin-octapeptide (CCK-8) on systemic hypotension and cytokine production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced endotoxic shock (ES) rats.
METHODS: The changes of blood pressure were observed using physiological record instrument in four groups of rats: LPS (8 mg•kg¯¹, iv) induced ES; CCK-8 (40 μg•kg¯¹, iv) pretreatment 10 min before LPS (8 mg•kg¯¹); CCK-8 (40 μg•kg¯¹, iv) or normal saline (control) groups. Differences in tissue and circulating specificity of the proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6) were assayed with ELISA kits.
RESULTS: CCK-8 reversed LPS-induced decrease of mean artery blood pressure (MABP) in rats. Compared with control, LPS elevated the serum level of IL-6 significantly (3567 ± 687) ng•L¯¹vs 128 ± 22 ng•L¯¹, P < 0.01), while contents of TNF-αβ elevated significantly (277 ± 86 ng•L¯¹vs not detectable and 43 ± 9 ng•L¯¹vs not detectable, P < 0.01) but less extent than IL-6. CCK-8 significantly inhibited the LPS-induced increase in serum TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6. LPS elevated spleen and lung content of IL-1β significantly (5184 ± 85 ng•L¯¹vs 1047 ± 21 ng•L¯¹ and 4050 ± 614 ng•L¯¹vs not detectable, P < 0.01), while levels of TNF-α and IL-6 also rose significantly but in less extent than IL-1β. CCK-8 inhibited the LPS-induced increase of the cytokines in spleen and lung. In the heart, CCK-8 significantly inhibited LPS-induced increase of TNF-α (864 ± 123 ng•L¯¹ in CCK-8 + LPS group vs 1599 ± 227 ng•L¯¹ in LPS group, P < 0.01), and IL-1β (282 ± 93 ng•L¯¹ in CCK-8+LPS group vs 621 ± 145 ng•L¯¹ in LPS group, P < 0.01).
CONCLUSION: CCK-8 reverses ES, which may be related to its inhibitory effect on the overproduction of cytokines.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate if sleep deprivation is able to increase the expression of inducible heat shock protein 70 in gastric mucosa and its possible role in mucosal defense.
METHODS: Rats for sleep disruption were placed inside a computerized rotating drum, gastric mucosa was taken from rats with 1, 3 and 7 d sleep deprivation. RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry and Western blotting were used to determine the expression of heat shock protein 70. Ethanol (500 mL·L-1, i.g.) was used to induce gastric mucosa damage.
RESULTS: RT-PCR, Western blotting and immunostaining confirmed that the sleep deprivation as a stress resulted in significantly greater expression of inducible heat shock protein 70 in gastric mucosa of rats. After the 500 mL·L-1 ethanol challenge, the ulcer area found in the rats with 7 d sleep deprivation (19.15 ± 4.2) mm2 was significantly lower (P < 0.01) than the corresponding control (53.7 ± 8.1) mm2.
CONCLUSION: Sleep deprivation as a stress, in addition to lowering the gastric mucosal barrier, is able to stimulate the expression of inducible heat shock protein 70 in gastric mucosa of rats, the heat shock protein 70 may play an important role in gastric mucosal protection.

Abstract
AIM: To observe the therapeutic effect of moxibustion on ulcerative colitis and its influence on the colonic mucosal morphology.
METHODS: Forty-six patients with ulcerative colitis were randomly divided into the moxibustion with herbal medicine underneath group and the western medicine group. Thirty patients were treated with the above moxibustion and 16 patients with Salicylaye fapyridine (SASP). The colonic mucosa of 13 patients in the moxibustion group was observed by colonoscopy before and after the treatment. Mucin was also analyzed by H.E and AB-PAS staining.
RESULTS: Seventeen patients were clinically cured, 12 were improved and 1 unchanged in the moxibustion group. In the control group, 5 patients were clinically cured, 7 improved and 4 unchanged. Thirteen patients with active UC were taken as the subjects for histopathologic analysis in this study. The colonic mucosal lesions were remarkably improved and the characteristic of the mucin also changed. In most sections, the chronic inflammation of mucosa was geatly ameliorated (P < 0.01). The inflammatory cell infiltratation much decreased and neutrophils, disapeared in most sections (P < 0.001). The goblet cells significantly increased (P < 0.001); crypt paracrypt abscess or mucosal ulceration was seen (P < 0.001).
CONCLUSION: The rate of cure of ulcerative colitis by moxibustion with herbal medicine beneath is superior to that by SASP. This sort of moxibustion can effectively improve the colonic mucosal lesions and restore the proportion of mucoprotein to near normal.
