Abstract
OBJECTIVES To our knowledge, little evidence exists on the relationships between body composition and health-related physical fitness; in particular, musculoskeletal fitness. Bioimpedance index phase angle (bioelectrical impedance analysis raw variables) is a candidate predictor of health-related fitness, a marker of fat-free and body cell mass, respectively. The aim of this study was to evaluate body composition, raw bioelectrical impedance analysis variables, and health-related fitness in young adults and investigate their mutual relationships to identify predictors of muscle strength. METHODS The study included 229 young adults (115 men and 114 women; 24.2 ± 3 y; body mass index 19-30 kg/m²). Anthropometry was measured with standardized procedures. Whole-body BIA (50 kHz) was performed for impedance and phase angle. Predictive equations estimated fat-free mass and percentage body fat. The bioimpedance index was calculated as stature²/impedance. Musculoskeletal fitness was assessed by handgrip strength, standing broad jump, squat jump, and countermovement jump. RESULTS In both sexes, health-related fitness had stronger associations with body composition than stature or weight. Handgrip strength was related to fat-free mass and bioimpedance index, while an inverse association with percent body fat emerged for standing broad jump, squat jump and countermovement jump. Phase angle is directly correlated with handgrip strength, standing broad jump, squat jump, and countermovement jump. In multiple regression analysis phase angle was an independent predictor of all health-related fitness tests, along with fat-free mass (or bioimpedance index) for handgrip strength, and with sex and percent body fat for the three jump tests. CONCLUSIONS The present study provided consistent information on the relationships between body composition and health-related fitness in young adults. Phase angle emerged as a significant predictor of all health-related fitness measures and might be useful for a more consistent assessment of musculoskeletal fitness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The search for other indicators to assess the weight status of individuals is important as it may provide more accurate information and assist in personalized medicine.This work is aimed to develop a machine learning predictions of weigh status derived from bioimpedance measurements and other physical parameters of healthy infant juvenile cohort from the Southern Cuba Region, Santiago de Cuba. METHODS The volunteers were selected between 2002 and 2008, ranging in age between 2 and 18 years old. In total, 393 female and male infant and juvenile individuals are studied. The bioimpedance parameters are obtained by measuring standard tetrapolar whole-body configuration. A classification model are performed, followed by a prediction of other bioparameters influencing the weight status. RESULTS The results obtained from the classification model indicate that fat-free mass, reactance, and corrected resistance primarily influence the weight status of the studied population. Specifically, the regression model demonstrates that other bioparameters derived from impedance measurements can be highly accurate in estimating weight status. CONCLUSION The classification and regression predictive models developed in this work are of the great importance for accessing to the weigh status with high accuracy of younger individuals at the Oncological Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.

Abstract
Background Older adults experience a significant decline in muscle integrity and function with aging. Early detection of decreased muscle quality can pave the way for interventions to mitigate the progression of age-related physical declines. Phase angle (PhA) and impedance ratio (IR) are measures of muscle integrity, which can be assessed quickly via bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and may be indicative of physical function. Objective This study aimed to characterize the relationships among handgrip strength (HGS), sit-to-stand (STS), BTrackS balance scores, fear of falling (evaluated using the Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International [Short FES-I]), and IR among community-dwelling older adult women classified as having a low or high PhA. Methods A cross-sectional analysis was conducted with 85 older women (mean age 75.0, SD 7.2 years; mean weight 71.0, SD 15.0 kg; mean height 162.6, SD 6.1 cm). To examine the influence of PhA on performance measures, participants were divided into 2 PhA groups: high (>4.1°; n=56) and low (≤4.1°; n=29). Data were nonnormative; hence, the Mann-Whitney U test was used to evaluate between-group differences, and Kendall τ coefficients were used to determine the partial correlations. Results The low PhA group had a significantly higher IR (mean 0.85, SD 0.03) than the high PhA group (mean 0.81, SD 0.03; r=.92; P<.001). The high PhA group had superior HGS (mean 21.4, SD 6.2 kg; P=.007; r=0.36), BTrackS balance scores (mean 26.6, SD 9.5 cm; P=.03; r=0.30), and STS scores (mean 16.0, SD 5.5; P<.001; r=0.49) than the low PhA group (mean HGS 17.6, SD 4.7 kg; mean BTrackS balance score 37.1, SD 21.1 cm; mean STS score 10.7, SD 6.2). Both PhA and IR were significantly correlated with HGS and BTrackS balance, STS, and Short FES-I scores (P<.05). However, on adjusting for the whole sample's age, only PhA was strongly correlated with HGS (τb=0.75; P=.003) and STS scores (τb=0.76; P=.002). Short FES-I scores were moderately correlated with IR (τb=0.46; P=.07) after controlling for age. No significant between-group differences were observed for height, weight, or BMI. Conclusions PhA and IR are associated with physical function and the fear of falling in older women. However, only PhA was significantly associated with physical function (HGS and STS) independent of age. Conversely, only IR was significantly associated with the fear of falling. Diminished physical function and increased IR appear to be characteristics of older women with a PhA of ≤4.1°. These findings suggest that PhA and IR measured through BIA together may serve as a valuable tool for early identification of older women at the risk of functional decline and a heightened fear of falling.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Resting energy expenditure (REE) constitutes the largest component of total energy expenditure and undergoes an age-related decline that is unexplained by decreased fat-free mass. Phase angle (PhA) is a cellular health indicator that is possibly associated with REE. We investigated the association of REE and PhA in hospitalized older adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS This single-center, cross-sectional analysis utilized the baseline data from a prospective longitudinal study and included 131 eligible patients aged ≥70 years. The REE was measured using indirect calorimetry, and PhA and body composition were assessed using bioelectrical impedance. The association between REE, PhA, and body composition was examined, and REE was compared using previously reported PhA cutoff values. RESULTS In this cohort with a mean (±standard deviation) age of 87.4 (±7.0) years, 34.4% of the participants were men. REE and PhA correlated strongly (r: 0.562, p < 0.001) and significantly after adjusting for age and sex (r: 0.433, p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed a significant independent association between REE and PhA and skeletal muscle mass (standardized β [95% CI]; 28.072 [2.188-53.956], p = 0.035) without any significant interaction between PhA and age on REE. The low PhA group had a significantly lower REE (kcal/day; 890 [856-925] vs. 1077 [1033-1122], p < 0.001), and this remained significant after adjusting for age, sex, and skeletal muscle mass index. CONCLUSIONS PhA is associated with REE in older adults. Adjusting REE calculation algorithms based on PhA values and correcting predicted REE according to PhA may aid in determining more accurate energy requirements.

Abstract
Introduction. Bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) emerges as a technique that utilizes raw parameters of bioelectrical impedance analysis and assumes the use of a reference population for information analysis.Objective. To summarize the reference values, main studies objectives, approaches, pre-test recommendations and technical characteristics of the devices employed in studies utilizing BIVA among children and adolescents without diagnosed diseases.Methods. A systematic search was conducted in nine electronic databases (CINAHL, LILACS, PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, Science Direct, MEDLINE, and Web of Science). Studies with different designs which allowed extracting information regarding reference values of BIVA in children and adolescents without diagnosed diseases, aged 19 years or younger, were included. The systematic review followed PRISMA procedures and was registered in PROSPERO (registration: CRD42023391069).Results. After applying the eligibility criteria, 36 studies were included. Twenty studies (55.6%) analyzed body composition using BIVA, thirteen studies (36.1%) aimed to establish reference values for BIVA, and three studies (8.3%) investigated the association of physical performance with BIVA. There was heterogeneity regarding the reference populations employed by the studies. Fifteen studies used their own sample as a reference (41.6%), four studies used the adult population as a reference (11.1%), and five studies used reference values from athletes (13.9%).Conclusion. Nutricional status and body composition were the main studies objectives. References values were not always adequate or specific for the sample and population. Furthermore, there was no pattern of pre-test recommendations among the studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Body composition reflects nutritional status, disease status and progression, and treatment responses. Mounting evidence supports the use of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) as a non-invasive tool to assess body composition. Patients with benign gastrointestinal (GI) disease experience disease-related alterations in their body composition, and bioimpedance outcomes in patients with benign GI diseases have not previously been summarized. We aimed to evaluate BIA as a clinical body composition marker for benign GI diseases and describe its association with physical health status. METHODS We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and CINAHL from inception to October 2023 (PROSPERO registration: CRD42021265866). Of 971 screened studies, 26 studies were included in the final analysis, comprising a total of 2398 adult patients with benign GI disease. The main outcome was raw impedance data. RESULTS The most frequently reported BIA outcome was phase angle (PhA) (reported in 18 of 26 studies), followed by fat-free-mass (FFM) (reported in 13 of 26 studies). The consensus view of the included studies illustrates that BIA can be a useful tool for evaluating body composition in patients with benign GI diseases, and low PhA and FFM were associated with increased nutritional risk, abnormal physical characteristics, and increased mortality risk. CONCLUSION To fully utilize BIA as a clinical marker of health in patients with benign GI disease, standardized protocols specific to this population are needed and prospective studies testing cut-offs and ranges, accuracy, and other raw BIA parameters for classifying disease status.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the associations of the objectively assessed total sedentary behavior (SB) amount and SB patterns with phase angle (PhA) in older populations and to conduct a comparison analysis for those who are physically active (meet 150 min/week) and inactive (less than 150 min/week). During May to August 2023, a convenience sampling was used to recruit older adults (aged ≥ 65 years) living in a community in Taiwan. The total SB amount (minutes/day), SB patterns (including SB bouts and breaks), and physical activity were assessed by a triaxial accelerometer. A multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analyzer (BIA) was used to measure PhA. Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to examine the associations between SB and PhA in the total number of participants and stratified in the physically active and inactive groups. For the whole sample (n = 166; mean age: 72.1 ± 5.5 years), the total SB amount and patterns of SB were not associated with PhA. For those physically active, the total SB amount and SB patterns were not associated with PhA. Among those physically inactive, the total SB amount was negatively related to PhA (B: -0.059, 95% CI: -0.118, 0.000). This study underscores the importance of minimizing the total SB amount in physically inactive older adults, providing evidence for future interventions targeting SB and PhA in this population.

Abstract
Objective. This study aimed to investigate the capacity of the bioelectrical muscle localized phase angle (ML-PhA) as an indicator of muscle power and strength compared to whole body PhA (WB-PhA).Approach. This study assessed 30 young women (22.1 ± 3.2 years) for muscle power and strength using the Wingate test and isokinetic dynamometer, respectively. Bioimpedance analysis at 50 kHz was employed to assess WB-PhA and ML-PhA. Lean soft tissue (LST) and fat mass (FM) were quantified using dual x-ray absorptiometry. Performance values were stratified into tertiles for comparisons. Regression and mediation analysis were used to test WB-PhA and ML-PhA as performance predictors.Main results. Women in the second tertile of maximum muscle power demonstrated higher ML-PhA values than those in first tertile (13.6° ± 1.5° versus 11.5° ± 1.5°,p= 0.031). WB-PhA was a predictor of maximum muscle power even after adjusting for LST and FM (β= 0.40,p= 0.039). ML-PhA alone predicted average muscle power (β= 0.47,p= 0.008). FM percentage was negatively related to ML-PhA and average muscle power, and it mediated their relationship (b= 0.14; bias-corrected and accelerated 95% confidence interval: 0.007-0.269).Significance. PhA values among tertiles demonstrated no differences and no correlation for strength variables. The results revealed that both WB and ML-PhA may be markers of muscle power in active young women.

Abstract
Purpose Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) remarkably reduced the incidence of hospitalization for heart failure and cardiovascular death of conservatively managed chronic kidney disease. We hypothesized that adding SGLT2i to standard treatment would yield cardiovascular benefits also in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) individuals on dialysis. Methods The DARE-ESKD-2 Trial (NCT05685394) is an ongoing, single-center, open-label, controlled trial aimed at assessing the cardiovascular effects of dapagliflozin in ESKD on dialysis. Eligible patients are adults on renal replacement therapy for more than 3 prior to enrollment. Exclusion criteria encompass pregnancy, liver failure, and current use of a SGLT2i. After signing an informed consent form, participants are randomized 1:1 to either dapagliflozin 10mg PO plus standard treatment or standard treatment alone for 6 months. Echocardiogram, anthropometry, blood sample collection, 6-min walk test, gait speed, and Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ), are performed at baseline and at study termination. Participants are contacted monthly during treatment for outcomes disclosure. The primary endpoint of our study is the between-groups differences in posttreatment changes in plasma levels of N-terminal pro-B natriuretic peptide. Secondary endpoints include the differences between groups in the changes of echocardiography measurements, cardiopulmonary tests performance, body composition. The incidence of safety endpoints will also be diligently compared between study arms. Conclusion The DARE-ESKD-2 trial will provide unprecedented data on the cardiovascular safety and efficacy of SGLT2i in ESKD individuals on dialysis. This study will pave the grounds for improving clinical outcomes of dialysis recipients.
