Physiological responses of wild grass Holcus lanatus L. to potentially toxic elements in soils: a review

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soils accumulate in plants, obstruct their growth, and pose hazards to the consumer via the food chain. Many kinds of grass, grass-like plants, and other higher plant species have evolved a tolerance to PTEs. Holcus lanatus L., a wild grass, is also tolerant (an excluder) of PTEs, such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn). However, the extent of tolerance varies among ecotypes and genotypes. The PTE tolerance mechanism of H. lanatus curtails the typical uptake process and causes a reduced translocation of PTEs from the roots to the shoots, while such a characteristic is useful for contaminated land management. The ecology and response patterns of Holcus lanatus L. to PTEs, along with the associated mechanisms, are reviewed in the current work.

Water and soil contaminated by arsenic: the use of microorganisms and plants in bioremediation

Owing to their roles in the arsenic (As) biogeochemical cycle, microorganisms and plants offer significant potential for developing innovative biotechnological applications able to remediate As pollutions. This possible use in bioremediation processes and phytomanagement is based on their ability to catalyse various biotransformation reactions leading to, e.g. the precipitation, dissolution, and sequestration of As, stabilisation in the root zone and shoot As removal. On the one hand, genomic studies of microorganisms and their communities are useful in understanding their metabolic activities and their interaction with As. On the other hand, our knowledge of molecular mechanisms and fate of As in plants has been improved by laboratory and field experiments. Such studies pave new avenues for developing environmentally friendly bioprocessing options targeting As, which worldwide represents a major risk to many ecosystems and human health.

Establishing the state-of-the-art on the adsorption of coexisting pnictogens in water: A literature review

The occurrence of pnictogens, namely phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony, can be observed in soils, sediments and mining areas, and their coexistence requires a multifaceted approach to the design of adsorption systems to maximize their simultaneous removal efficiency. Therefore, this work aims to provide an extensive literature review of P, As, and Sb adsorption in multicomponent systems and the statistical treatment of the quantitative results. Binary As-P systems have been the most studied in the literature. The oxidation state did not significantly affect the P influence in As adsorbed amount (p = 0.955), but this influence was correlated with the As:P ratio (p < 0.05). A few works have explored As-Sb and Sb-P systems, demonstrating that effective treatments for As do not always reveal a good removal efficiency of the other pnictogens. The Sb adsorbed amount was significantly less affected in the trivalent than in the pentavalent state in both As-Sb and Sb-P systems (p < 0.05). Most of the interactions were competitive, with a few studies reporting synergistic effects for Sb due to the presence of the other elements. Many topics have been identified as lacking in-depth research: ternary As-Sb-P systems, the effect of concentration ratios, pH, and redox conditions (namely those that lead to trivalent species' prevalence), the surface interactions with materials other than iron oxides, and the influence of other aqueous components. This review provides a first step in gathering the relevant literature and approaching the study of adsorption treatment methodology as a complex subject involving many factors.

Arsenic accumulation and speciation in two cultivars of Pteris cretica L. and characterization of arsenate reductase PcACR2 and arsenite transporter PcACR3 genes in the hyperaccumulating cv. Albo-lineata

Pollution and poisoning with carcinogenic arsenic (As) is of major concern globally. Interestingly, there are ferns that can naturally tolerate remarkably high As concentrations in soils while hyperaccumulating this metalloid in their fronds. Besides Pteris vittata in which As-related traits and molecular determinants have been studied in detail, the As hyperaccumulation status has been attributed also to Pteris cretica. We thus inspected two P. cretica cultivars, Parkerii and Albo-lineata, for As hyperaccumulation traits. The cultivars were grown in soils supplemented with 20, 100, and 250 mg kg-1 of inorganic arsenate (iAsV). Unlike Parkerii, Albo-lineata was confirmed to be As tolerant and hyperaccumulating, with up to 1.3 and 6.4 g As kg-1 dry weight in roots and fronds, respectively, from soils amended with 250 mg iAsV kg-1. As speciation analyses rejected that organoarsenical species and binding with phytochelatins and other proteinaceous ligands would play any significant role in the biology of As in either cultivar. While in Parkerii, the dominating As species, particularly in roots, occurred as iAsV, in Albo-lineata the majority of the root and frond As was apparently converted to iAsIII. Parkerii markedly accumulated iAsIII in its fronds when grown on As spiked soils. Considering the roles iAsV reductase ACR2 and iAsIII transporter ACR3 may have in the handling of iAs, we isolated Albo-lineata PcACR2 and PcACR3 genes closely related to P. vittata PvACR2 and PvACR3. The gene expression analysis in Albo-lineata fronds revealed that the transcription of PcACR2 and PcACR3 was clearly As responsive (up to 6.5- and 45-times increase in transcript levels compared to control soil conditions, respectively). The tolerance and uptake assays in yeasts showed that PcACRs can complement corresponding As-sensitive mutations, indicating that PcACR2 and PcACR3 encode functional proteins that can perform, respectively, iAsV reduction and membrane iAsIII transport tasks in As-hyperaccumulating Albo-lineata.

Abiotic mediation of common ions on the co-exposure of CeO2 NPs with Sb (III) or Sb (V) to Glycine max (Linn.) Merrill. (Soybean): Impacts on uptake, accumulation and physiochemical characters

With the most active Sb mines, the "dominance" on Sb production of China lead to increasingly release and omnipresence of Sb in environment through mining activities as well as the life cycle of Sb-containing productions. The introduction of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) accidentally or intentionally (such as NP-containing sludge as fertilizer) might increase the probability of co-exposed with Sb to plants. In this study, CeO2 NPs, one of the most widely used nanomaterials in industries with potential oxidizing or reducing properties, was selected and co-exposed with Sb (III) or Sb (V) to investigate their mutual effects on uptake, accumulation and physiological effects in soybeans. The results showed that CeO2 NPs increased the Sb (III) and Sb (V) concentrations in roots by 36.7% and 14.0% respectively, while Sb (III) and Sb (V) inhibited the concentration of Ce in roots by 97.1% and 86.9% respectively. In addition, the impacts of extra common ions (Mn2+, Cu2+, Fe3+ and Zn2+) on the fate of Ce and Sb in soybeans in co-exposure of CeO2 NPs with Sb were investigated as well. Mn2+ and Fe3+ increased the accumulations of Ce and Sb (III) in the co-exposure of CeO2 NPs with Sb (III), but reduced that in the co-exposure of CeO2 NPs with Sb (V). Notably, the addition of Cu2+ and Zn2+ consistently increased the uptake and accumulation of Ce and Sb in the co-exposure treatments. Moreover, the effects of Sb on the dissolved portion of CeO2 NPs in soybean roots were also investigated. This study provided a perspective that extra ingredient (mineral elements, organic element or other nutrients) might regulated the interactions in ENPs-heavy metals-plants system which need further explorations.

Soil migration of antimony and arsenic facilitated by colloids in lysimeter studies

The migration behaviors of antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) and its influence factors have not been well understood among the different soils. In this study, we used lysimeter experiments to investigate the migration behavior of Sb compared with that of As in four representative soil materials from China. All the experiments processes and management measures were conducted to simulate the actual natural environmental conditions. Results indicated that after two years of leaching, the concentrations of Sb and As at the soil surface had decreased, whereas they increased in the deep soil profiles. In the polluted soil materials, 28.5%-39.2% of Sb and 0.4%-1.3% of As existed in the stable fraction, respectively. As and Sb levels were higher in the surface soil layer, and decreased with the soil depth in the different soil profiles. In soil leachate, Sb was mainly found in particle sizes smaller than 0.45 μm with the organic colloids, which had a peak in the spring and summer. On contrast, As was found in particle sizes larger than 0.45 μm with the inorganic colloids such as iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) oxides. Pearson correlation results showed that the concentrations of Sb in the soil leaching solution and 0.45-μm-filltered solution were all positively correlated with Fe and Al. The results confirmed that Sb was combined with Fe and Al in the solution, and As posed a greater environmental risk than Sb during the leaching process. This study will help us to describe and predict As and Sb pollution in the soil environment, providing a basis for managing soil contaminated by these pollutants.
