Abstract
In the clinical setting, chemotherapy is the most widely used antitumor treatment, however, chemotherapy resistance significantly limits its efficacy. Reduced drug influx is a key mechanism of chemoresistance, and inhibition of the complexity of the tumor microenvironment (TME) may improve chemotherapy drug influx and therapeutic efficiency. In the current study, we identified that the major extracellular matrix protein collagen I is more highly expressed in lung cancer tissues than adjacent tissues in patients with lung cancer. Furthermore, Kaplan-Meier analysis suggested that COL1A1 expression was negatively correlated with the survival time of patients with lung cancer. Our previous study demonstrated that miR-29a inhibited collagen I expression in lung fibroblasts. Here, we investigated the effect of miR-29a on collagen I expression and the cellular behavior of lung cancer cells. Our results suggest that transfection with miR-29a could prevent Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) migration by downregulating collagen I expression, but did not affect the proliferation, apoptosis, and cell cycle of LLC cells. In a 3D tumoroid model, we demonstrated that miR-29a transfection significantly increased cisplatin (CDDP) permeation and CDDP-induced cell death. Furthermore, neutral lipid emulsion-based miR-29a delivery improved the therapeutic effect of cisplatin in an LLC spontaneous tumor model in vivo. In summary, this study shows that targeting collagen I expression in the TME contributes to chemotherapy drug influx and improves therapeutic efficacy in lung cancer.

Abstract
Lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) are pivotal intermediates involved in all the cathodic reactions in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Elucidating the solvation structure of LiPSs is the first step for rational design of electrolyte and improving Li-S battery performances. Herein, we investigate the solvation structure of LiPSs and find that Li salt anions tend to enter the first solvation sheath of LiPSs and form contact ion pairs in electrolyte. The anion-involved solvation structure of LiPSs significantly influences the intrinsic kinetics of the sulfur redox reactions. In particular, the LiPS solvation structure modified by lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide endows Li-S batteries with reduced polarization and enhanced rate performances under high sulfur areal loading and lean electrolyte volume conditions. This work updates the fundamental understanding of the solvation chemistry of LiPSs and highlights electrolyte engineering for promoting the performances of Li-S batteries.

Abstract
Substance use in people with HIV (PWH) negatively impacts antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. However, less is known about this in the current treatment era and the impact of specific substances or severity of substance use. We examined the associations of alcohol, marijuana, and illicit drug use (methamphetamine/crystal, cocaine/crack, illicit opioids/heroin) and their severity of use with adherence using multivariable linear regression in adult PWH in care between 2016 and 2020 at 8 sites across the US. PWH completed assessments of alcohol use severity (AUDIT-C), drug use severity (modified ASSIST), and ART adherence (visual analogue scale). Among 9400 PWH, 16% reported current hazardous alcohol use, 31% current marijuana use, and 15% current use of ≥1 illicit drugs. In multivariable analysis, current methamphetamine/crystal use, particularly common among men who had sex with men, was associated with 10.1% lower mean ART adherence (p < 0.001) and 2.6% lower adherence per 5-point higher severity of use (ASSIST score) (p < 0.001). Current and more severe use of alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drugs were also associated with lower adherence in a dose-dependent manner. In the current HIV treatment era, individualized substance use treatment, especially for methamphetamine/crystal, and ART adherence should be prioritized.

Abstract
BACKGROUND CONTEXT Elderly patients are less likely to recover from lumbar spine fusion (LSF) as rapidly compared with younger patients. However, there is still a lack of research on the effect of early ambulation on elderly patients undergoing LSF surgery for lumbar degenerative disorders. PURPOSE To evaluate the safety and benefit of ambulation within 24 hours in elderly patients who underwent LSF. STUDY DESIGN A retrospective study. PATIENT SAMPLE Consecutive patients (aged 65 and older) who underwent elective transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion surgery for degenerative disorders from January 2019 to October 2022. OUTCOME MEASURES Outcome measures included postoperative complications, postoperative drainage (mL), laboratory test data, length of hospital stay (LOS), readmission and reoperation within 3 months. METHODS Early ambulation patients (ambulation within 24 hours after surgery) were propensity-score matched 1:1 to a delayed ambulation patients (ambulation at a minimum of 48 hours postoperatively) based on age, intraoperative blood loss, and number of fused segments. The incidence of postoperative adverse events (AEs, including rates of complications, readmission, and prolonged LOS) and the average LOS were used to assess the safety and benefit of early ambulation, respectively. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to assess the association between early ambulation and postoperative AEs. The risk factors for delayed ambulation were also determined using multivariable logistic analyses. RESULTS A total of 998 patients with LSF surgery were reviewed in this study. After excluding 116 patients for various reasons, 882 patients (<24 hours: N=350, 24-48 hours: N=230, and >48 hours: N= 302) were included in the final analysis. After matching, sex, BMI, preoperative comorbidities, laboratory test data and surgery-related variables were comparable between the groups. The incidence of postoperative AEs was significantly lower in the EA group (44.3% vs 64.0%, p<.001). The average postoperative LOS of the EA group was 2 days shorter than the DA group (6.5 days vs 8.5 days, p<.001). Patients in the EA group had a significantly lower rate of prolonged LOS compared with the DA group (35.1% vs 55.3%, p<.001). There was no significant difference in postoperative drainage volumes between the two groups. Multivariable analysis identified older age (odds ratio [OR] 1.07, p<.001), increased intraoperative EBL (OR 1.002, p=.001), and higher international normalization ratio (OR 10.57, p=.032) as significant independent risk factors for delayed ambulation. CONCLUSIONS Ambulation within 24 hours after LSF surgery is independently associated fewer AEs and shorter hospital stays in elderly patients. Implementing the goal of ambulation within 24 hours after LSF surgery into enhanced recovery after surgery protocols for elderly patients seems appropriate. Older age, increased intraoperative blood loss and worse coagulation function are associated with delayed ambulation.

Abstract
Seed coat mucilage plays an important role in promoting seed germination under adversity. Previous studies have shown that Arabidopsis thaliana MYB52 (AtMYB52) can positively regulate seed coat mucilage accumulation. However, the role of Brassica napus MYB52 (BnaMYB52) in accumulation of seed coat mucilage and tolerance to osmotic stress during seed germination remains largely unknown. We cloned the BnaA09.MYB52 coding domain sequence from B. napus cv ZS11, identified its conserved protein domains and elucidated its relationship with homologues from a range of plant species. Transgenic plants overexpressing BnaA09.MYB52 in the A. thaliana myb52-1 mutant were generated through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and used to assess the possible roles of BnaA09.MYB52 in accumulation of seed coat mucilage and tolerance to osmotic stress during seed germination. Subcellular localization and transcriptional activity assays demonstrated that BnaA09.MYB52 functions as a transcription factor. RT-qPCR results indicate that BnaA09.MYB52 is predominantly expressed in roots and developing seeds of B. napus cv ZS11. Introduction of BnaA09.MYB52 into myb52-1 restored thinner seed coat mucilage in this mutant to levels in the wild type. Consistently, expression levels of three key genes participating in mucilage formation in developing seeds of myb52-1 were also restored to wild type levels by overexpressing BnaA09.MYB52. Furthermore, BnaA09.MYB52 was induced by osmotic stress during seed germination in B. napus, and ectopic expression of BnaA09.MYB52 successfully corrected sensitivity of the myb52-1 mutant to osmotic stress during seed germination. These findings enhance our understanding of the functions of BnaA09.MYB52 and provide a novel strategy for future B. napus breeding.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN A retrospective study. OBJECTIVE To compare the mini nutritional assessment-short form (MNA-SF), geriatric nutritional risk index, prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and preoperative serum albumin level as predictors of postoperative adverse events (AEs) in degenerative spine deformity (DSD) patients. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Although various nutritional screening tools have been well evaluated in patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery, the most suitable tool for the DSD population remains uncertain at present. PATIENTS AND METHODS The authors reviewed consecutive patients who underwent thoracolumbar fusion surgery for DSD between August 2016 and May 2023. Four screening tools were used to assess preoperative nutritional status. Patients were divided into two categories according to each screening tool, and the four screening tools were compared regarding their predictive power for postoperative AEs, including the rates of extended length of hospital stays (LOS), complications, and readmission within three months. Physical functional indicators such as time to first ambulation, nonhome discharge, and postoperative LOS were assessed as secondary outcome measures. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with postoperative AEs. RESULTS A total of 228 patients were included. The demographic characteristics, underlying disease, and magnitude of correction were not significantly different between well-nourished and malnourished groups. The nutritional risks shown by MNA-SF and albumin level were significantly associated with infectious complications ( P <0.05). The nutritional risk shown by MNA-SF was significantly associated with nonhome discharge, prolonged postoperative LOS (12.5±8.2 vs. 10.3±6.1, P =0.039), and delayed ambulation (3.7±2.1 vs. 2.2±1.8, P =0.001). Multivariable logistic regression revealed that PNI <50 was significantly associated with total AEs and minor AEs after DSD surgery. CONCLUSIONS PNI was significantly associated with the incidence of total AEs and minor AEs, while preoperative albumin level and MNA-SF were more effective in predicting postoperative infectious complications and delayed recovery of physical function, respectively. Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have indicated that the triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) index is associated with hypertension; however, evidence on the association of change in the TyG index with blood pressure and hypertension is limited. AIMS To assess the association of the TyG index with blood pressure and hypertension. DESIGN A cohort study. METHODS We included 17 977 individuals with a mean age of 60.5 years from the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort. The TyG index was calculated as ln [fasting triglyceride (mg/dl)×fasting glucose (mg/dl)/2]. Hypertension was defined as blood pressure ≥140/90 mmHg, self-reported current use of antihypertensive medication or self-reported physician diagnosis of hypertension. RESULTS In the longitudinal analyses, we found a linear dose-response relationship between changes in the TyG index and change in blood pressure. Each one-unit change in the TyG index was associated with a 1.93 (1.23-2.63) mmHg increase in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and a 1.78 (1.42-2.16) mmHg increase in diastolic blood pressure (DBP). During a median follow-up of 9.37 years, a total of 3594 individuals were newly diagnosed with hypertension. We also found a linear dose-response relationship between the TyG index and the incidence of hypertension. The hazard ratio (HR) of hypertension for each one-unit increase in the TyG index was 1.21 (1.13-1.29). In addition, the best cut-off point of TyG for predicting hypertension was 8.4797, with sensitivity, and specificity of 57.85% and 55.40%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The TyG index had a positive dose-response relationship with blood pressure and could be used to predict the risk of hypertension.

Abstract
Hypoxic preconditioning (HPC) has been shown to improve organ tolerance to subsequent severe hypoxia or ischemia. However, its impact on intestinal ischemic injury has not been well studied. In this study, we evaluated the effects of HPC on intestinal ischemia in rats. Intestinal rehabilitation, levels of fatty acid oxidation (FAO) by-products, intestinal stem cells (ISCs), levels of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 subunit α (HIF-1α) and its downstream genes such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα), and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1a (CPT1A) were assessed at distinct time intervals following intestinal ischemia with or without the interference of HIF-1α. Our data showed that HPC facilitates the restoration of the intestinal structure and enhances the FAO, by boosting intestinal stem cells. Additionally, HIF-1α, PPARα, and CPT1A mRNA and their protein levels were generally up-regulated in the small intestine of HPC rats as compared to the control group. Our vitro experiment also shows low-oxygen induces highly levels of HIF-1α and its downstream genes, with a concurrent increase in FAO products in IEC-6 cells. Furthermore, the above phenomenon could be reversed by silencing HIF-1α. In conclusion, we hypothesize that HPC can stimulate the activation of intestinal stem cells via HIF-1α/PPARα pathway-mediated FAO, thereby accelerating the healing process post ischemic intestinal injury.

Abstract
This study investigated the impact of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) at Neiguan acupoint (PC6) on the physiological and behavioral responses of participants exposed in virtual height. 40 participants were included in the study and were randomly assigned to either a control group or an intervention group. Participants had an immersive experience with a VR interactive platform that provided somatosensory interaction in height stimulation scenes. Psychological scores, behavioral and cognitive performance, and physiological responses were recorded and analyzed. The results indicated that the intervention group had significantly lower fear scores compared to the control group. Analysis of heart rate variability revealed that the intervention group exhibited improved heart rate variability, indicating enhanced cardiovascular function and emotion regulation. The behavioral and cognitive results demonstrated that the intervention group exhibited higher left eye openness, faster reaction times, and greater movement distance, suggesting enhanced attentional focus, cognitive processing, and reduced avoidance behaviors. These findings suggest that TEAS at PC6 can effectively reduce fear and improve the regulation of physiological and behavioral responses to negative emotional stimuli.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental health problems are critical and common in medical staff working in Intensive Care Units (ICU) even at the late stage of COVID-19, particularly for nurses. There is little research to explore the inner relationships between common syndromes, such as depression and burnout. Network analysis (NA) was a novel approach to quantified the correlations between mental variables from the perspective of mathematics. This study was to investigate the interactions between burnout and depression symptoms through NA among ICU nurses. METHOD A cross-sectional study with a total of 616 Chinese nurses in ICU were carried out by convenience sampling from December 19, 2022 to January19, 2023 via online survey. Burnout symptoms were measured by Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) (Chinese version), and depressive symptoms were assessed by the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). NA was applied to build interactions between burnout and depression symptoms. We identified central and bridge symptoms by R package qgraph in the network model. R package bootnet was used to examined the stability of network structure. RESULTS The prevalence of burnout and depressive symptoms were 48.2% and 64.1%, respectively. Within depression-burnout network, PHQ4(Fatigue)-MBI2(Used up) and PHQ4(Fatigue)-MBI5(Breakdown) showed stronger associations. MBI2(Used up) had the strongest expected influence central symptoms, followed by MBI4(Stressed) and MBI7 (Less enthusiastic). For bridge symptoms. PHQ4(Fatigue), MBI5(Breakdown) and MBI2(Used up) weighed highest. Both correlation stability coefficients of central and bridge symptoms in the network structure were 0.68, showing a high excellent level of stability. CONCLUSION The symptom of PHQ4(Fatigue) was the bridge to connect the emotion exhaustion and depression. Targeting this symptom will be effective to detect mental disorders and relieve mental syndromes of ICU nurses at the late stage of COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the retinal structural and microvascular change in aquaporin-4 antibody (AQP4) positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) patients and the correlation with clinical features. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed with optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to measure retinal structure and microvascular parameters in AQP4 positive NMOSD patients. RESULTS Sixty-two NMOSD patients (44 eyes with ON, NMOSD+ON; 77 eyes without ON, NMOSD-ON) and 62 healthy controls (HC, 124 eyes) were included. BCVA was worse in NMOSD patients compared to HC (p<0.001). Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL, p<0.001) and ganglion cell complex (GCC, p<0.001) was thinner in NMOSD+ON eyes compared to NMOSD-ON eyes and HC. Compared to HC, pRNFL (p = 0.002) and GCC (p = 0.001) was thinner in NMOSD-ON eyes. The vessel density (VD) in superficial capillary plexus (SCP, NMOSD+ON vs HC p<0.001, NMOSD-ON vs HC p = 0.002) and radial peripapillary capillary (RPC, NMOSD+ON vs HC p<0.001, NMOSD-ON vs HC p = 0.001) were also lower in NMOSD patients than HC independent of the history of ON. ON frequency and BCVA were correlated with the thickness of pRNFL and GCC, and VD in SCP and RPC (all p<0.001). EDSS was correlated with thickness of GCC (p = 0.008), and VD in SCP (p = 0.013), DCP (p<0.001) and RPC (p = 0.009). CONCLUSIONS Subclinical degradation of retinal structure and microvasculature was found in NMOSD patients before the occurrence of ON, and was correlated with clinical disability. Retinal parameter might be a tool to estimate the disease progression and investigate the pathogenesis of NMOSD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D (VD) possesses immunomodulatory properties, but its role in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) remains poorly studied. Herein, we aim to explore the regulation and function of VD3 in CRSwNP. METHODS 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25VD3) levels in serum and tissue lysates were detected by ELISA. The expression of VD receptor (VDR) and cytochrome P450 family 27 subfamily B member 1 (CYP27B1), the enzyme that converts 25VD3 to the active 1,25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25VD3), and their expression regulation in human nasal epithelial cells (HNECs) were studied by RT-PCR, western blotting, immunofluorescence, and flow cytometry. RNA sequencing was performed to identify genes regulated by 1,25VD3 in HNECs. HNECs and polyp tissue explants were treated with 1,25VD3, 25VD3, and dexamethasone. RESULTS 25VD3 levels in serum and nasal tissue lysates were decreased in patients with eosinophilic and noneosinophilic CRSwNP than control subjects. The expression of VDR and CYP27B1 were reduced in eosinophilic and noneosinophilic CRSwNP, particularly in nasal epithelial cells. VDR and CYP27B1 expression in HNECs were downregulated by interferon y and poly (I:C). Polyp-derived epithelial cells demonstrated an impaired ability to convert 25VD3 to 1,25VD3 than control tissues. 1,25VD3 and 25VD3 suppressed IL-36y production in HNECs and polyp tissues, and the effect of 25VD3 was abolished by siCYP27B1 treatment. Tissue 25VD3 levels negatively correlated with IL-36y expression and neutrophilic inflammation in CRSwNP. CONCLUSION Reduced systemic 25VD3 level, local 1,25VD3 generation and VDR expression result in impaired VD3 signaling activation in nasal epithelial cells, thereby exaggerating IL-36y production and neutrophilic inflammation in CRSwNP.

Abstract
To investigate whether high cognitive task load (CTL) for aircraft pilots can be identified by analysing heart-rate variability, electrocardiograms were recorded while cadet pilots (n = 68) performed the plane tracking, anti-gravity pedalling, and reaction tasks during simulated flight missions. Data for standard electrocardiogram parameters were extracted from the R-R-interval series. In the research phase, low frequency power (LF), high frequency power (HF), normalised HF, and LF/HF differed significantly between high and low CTL conditions (p < .05 for all). A principal component analysis identified three components contributing 90.62% of cumulative heart-rate variance. These principal components were incorporated into a composite index. Validation in a separate group of cadet pilots (n = 139) under similar conditions showed that the index value significantly increased with increasing CTL (p < .05). The heart-rate variability index can be used to objectively identify high CTL flight conditions.Practitioner summary: We used principal component analysis of electrocardiogram data to construct a composite index for identifying high cognitive task load in pilots during simulated flight. We validated the index in a separate group of pilots under similar conditions. Abstract
BACKGROUND Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a serious health concern that affects pregnant women worldwide and can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Early detection of high-risk individuals and the implementation of appropriate treatment can enhance these outcomes. METHODS We conducted a study on a cohort of 3467 pregnant women during their pregnancy, with a total of 5649 clinical and biochemical records collected. We utilized this dataset as our training dataset to develop a web server called GDMPredictor. The GDMPredictor utilizes advanced machine learning techniques to predict the risk of GDM in pregnant women. We also personalize treatment recommendations based on essential biochemical indicators, such as A1MG, BMG, CysC, CO2, TBA, FPG, and CREA. Our assessment of GDMPredictor's effectiveness involved training it on the dataset of 3467 pregnant women and measuring its ability to predict GDM risk using an AUC and auPRC. RESULTS GDMPredictor demonstrated an impressive level of precision by achieving an AUC score of 0.967. To tailor our treatment recommendations, we use the GDM risk level to identify higher risk candidates who require more intensive care. The GDMPredictor can accept biochemical indicators for predicting the risk of GDM at any period from 1 to 24 weeks, providing healthcare professionals with an intuitive interface to identify high-risk patients and give optimal treatment recommendations. CONCLUSIONS The GDMPredictor presents a valuable asset for clinical practice, with the potential to change the management of GDM in pregnant women. Its high accuracy and efficiency make it a reliable tool for doctors to improve patient outcomes. Abstract
Gestational hypoxia adversely affects uterine artery function, increasing complications. However, an effective therapy remains unidentified. Here, we show in rodent uterine arteries that hypoxic pregnancy promotes hypertrophic remodelling, increases constrictor reactivity via protein kinase C signalling, and triggers compensatory dilatation via nitric oxide-dependent mechanisms and stimulation of large conductance Ca2+ -activated K+ -channels. Maternal in vivo oral treatment with the mitochondria-targeted antioxidant MitoQ in hypoxic pregnancy normalises uterine artery reactivity and prevents vascular remodelling. From days 6-20 of gestation (term ∼22 days), female Wistar rats were randomly assigned to normoxic or hypoxic (13-14% O2 ) pregnancy ± daily maternal MitoQ treatment (500 µm in drinking water). At 20 days of gestation, maternal, placental and fetal tissue was frozen to determine MitoQ uptake. The uterine arteries were harvested and, in one segment, constrictor and dilator reactivity was determined by wire myography. Another segment was fixed for unbiased stereological analysis of vessel morphology. Maternal administration of MitoQ in both normoxic and hypoxic pregnancy crossed the placenta and was present in all tissues analysed. Hypoxia increased uterine artery constrictor responses to norepinephrine, angiotensin II and the protein kinase C activator, phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate. Hypoxia enhanced dilator reactivity to sodium nitroprusside, the large conductance Ca2+ -activated K+ -channel activator NS1619 and ACh via increased nitric oxide-dependent mechanisms. Uterine arteries from hypoxic pregnancy showed increased wall thickness and MitoQ treatment in hypoxic pregnancy prevented all effects on uterine artery reactivity and remodelling. The data support mitochondria-targeted therapy against adverse changes in uterine artery structure and function in high-risk pregnancy. KEY POINTS: Dysfunction and remodelling of the uterine artery are strongly implicated in many pregnancy complications, including advanced maternal age, maternal hypertension of pregnancy, maternal obesity, gestational diabetes and pregnancy at high altitude. Such complications not only have immediate adverse effects on the growth of the fetus, but also they can also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in the mother and offspring. Despite this, there is a significant unmet clinical need for therapeutics that treat uterine artery vascular dysfunction in adverse pregnancy. Here, we show in a rodent model of gestational hypoxia that in vivo oral treatment of the mitochondria-targeted antioxidant MitoQ protects against uterine artery vascular dysfunction and remodelling, supporting the use of mitochondria-targeted therapy against adverse changes in uterine artery structure and function in high-risk pregnancy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To construct a prediction model for fetal growth restriction (FGR) during the first trimester of pregnancy and evaluate its screening performance. METHODS This was a prospective cohort study of singleton pregnancies that underwent routine ultrasound screening at 11 to 13 + 6 weeks at the Affiliated Suzhou Hospital of Nanjing Medical University between January 2019 and April 2022. Basic clinical information, ultrasound indicators and serum biomarkers of pregnant women were collected. Fetal weight assessment was based on the fetal growth curve for the Southern Chinese population. FGR was diagnosed according to Delphi consensus criteria. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (lasso) regression was used to select variables for inclusion in the model. Discrimination, calibration and clinical effectiveness of the model were evaluated in training and validation cohorts. RESULTS A total of 1188 pregnant women were included, of whom 108 had FGR. Lasso regression identified seven predictive features, including history of maternal hypertension, maternal smoking or passive smoking, gravidity, uterine artery pulsatility index, ductus venosus pulsatility index and multiples of the median values of placental growth factor and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1. The nomogram prediction model constructed from these seven variables accurately predicted FGR, and the area under the receiver-operating-characteristics curve in the validation cohort was 0.82 (95% CI, 0.74-0.90). The calibration curve and Hosmer-Lemeshow test demonstrated good calibration, and the clinical decision curve and clinical impact curve supported its practical value in a clinical setting. CONCLUSION The multi-index prediction model for FGR has good predictive value during the first trimester. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a feed crop due to its rich nutrition and high productivity. The utilization of titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) brings benefits to agricultural production but also has potential hazards. To investigate the duality and related mechanism of TiO2 NPs on alfalfa, its different doses including 0, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 mg L- 1 (CK, Ti-50, Ti-100, Ti-200, Ti-500, and Ti-1000) were sprayed on leaves. The results showed that greater doses of TiO2 NPs (500 and 1000 mg L-1) negatively affected the physiological parameters, including morphology, biomass, leaf ultrastructure, stomata, photosynthesis, pigments, and antioxidant ability. However, 100 mg L-1 TiO2 NPs revealed an optimal positive effect; compared with the CK, it dramatically increased plant height, fresh weight, and dry weight by 22%, 21%, and 41%, respectively. Additionally, TiO2 NPs at low doses significantly protected leaf tissue, promoted stomatal opening, and enhanced the antioxidant system; while higher doses had phytotoxicity. Hence, TiO2 NPs are dose-dependent on alfalfa. The transcriptomic analysis identified 4625 and 2121 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the comparison of CK vs. Ti-100 and CK vs. Ti-500, respectively. They were mainly enriched in photosynthesis, chlorophyll metabolism, and energy metabolism. Notably, TiO2 NPs-induced phytotoxicity on photosynthetic parameters happened concurrently with the alterations of the genes involved in the porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism and carbon fixation in photosynthetic organisms in the KEGG analysis. Similarly, it affected the efficiency of alfalfa energy transformation processes, including pyruvate metabolism and chlorophyll synthesis. Several key related genes in these pathways were validated. Therefore, TiO2 NPs have positive and toxic effects by regulating morphology, leaf ultrastructure, stomata, photosynthesis, redox homeostasis, and genes related to key pathways. It is significant to understand the duality of TiO2 NPs and cultivate varieties resistant to nanomaterial pollution.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to explore the impact of late night shift work on the functional outcomes of patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) treated with endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). Methods Consecutive AIS patients who underwent EVT between June 2019 and June 2021 were enrolled and divided into non-night shift work and night shift work groups based on their occupational histories. The primary outcome was the modified Rankin Scale score defined 3-month functional outcome. The secondary outcomes were 3-month mortality, symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH), ICH and early recanalization. Results A total of 285 patients were enrolled, 35 patients (12.3%) were night shift workers, who were younger (P < 0.001) and had a significantly higher prevalence of smoking (P < 0.001), hyperlipidemia (P = 0.002), coronary heart disease (P = 0.031), and atrial fibrillation (P < 0.001). The 3-month favorable outcomes were achieved in 44.8% and 25.7% of patients in the non-night shift work and night shift work groups, respectively (adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 0.24, 95% CI: 0.10-0.57; adjusted P = 0.001). No difference was found in 3-month mortality (adjusted OR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.14-1.25, adjusted P = 0.121), rates of ICH (adjusted OR: 0.73; 95% CI: 0.33-1.60; adjusted P = 0.430), sICH (adjusted OR: 0.75; 95% CI: 0.34-1.67; adjusted P = 0.487), or early successful recanalization (adjusted OR: 0.42; 95% CI: 0.12-1.56; adjusted P = 0.197). These results were consistent after PSM analysis. Conclusion Our findings suggest that late night shift work is significantly associated with unfavorable outcomes in patients with AIS after EVT.

Abstract
1. Feathers are an important product from poultry, and the state of feather growth and development plays an important role in their economic value.2. In total, 120 eggs were selected for immunoblotting and immunolocalisation experiments of ERK and β-catenin proteins in different developmental stages of goose embryos. The ERK protein was highly expressed in the early stage of goose embryo development, while β-catenin protein was highly expressed in the middle stage of embryo development.3. The 120 eggs were divided into four treatment groups, including an uninjected group (BLANK), a group injected with 100 µl of cosolvent (CK), a group injected with 100 µl of AZD6244 containing cosolvent in a dose of 5 mg/kg AZD6244 containing cosolvent (AZD5) and a group injected with 100 µl of AZD6244 containing cosolvent in a dose of 15 mg/kg AZD6244 containing cosolvent (AZD15). The eggs were injected on the ninth day of embryonic development (E9). Samples were collected at E21.5 to observe feather width, feather follicle diameter, ERK and Wnt/β-catenin pathway protein expression.4. The AZD5 and AZD15 doses were within the embryonic safety range compared to the BLANK and CK groups and had no significant effect on the survival rate and weight at the inflection point, but significantly reduced the feather width and feather follicle diameter (p < 0.05). The AZD6244 treatment inhibited ERK protein phosphorylation levels and blocked the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, which in turn significantly down-regulated the expression levels of FZD4, β-catenin, TCF4 and LEF1 (p < 0.05), with an inhibitory effect in the AZD15 group being more significant. The immunohistochemical results of β-catenin and p-ERK were consistent with Western blot results.5. The small molecule inhibitor AZD6244 regulated the growth and development of feather follicles in goose embryos by the ERK and Wnt/β-catenin pathways.

Abstract
Designing and fabricating highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalytic materials for water splitting is a promising and practical approach to green and sustainable low-carbon energy systems. Herein, a facile in situ growth self-template strategy by using ZIF-67 as a consumable layered double hydroxides (LDHs) template and silver nanowires (AgNWs) as 1D conductive cascaded substrate to controllably synthesize the target AgNWs@CoFe-LDH composites with unique hollow shell sugar gourd-like structure and enhanced directional electron transport effect is reported. The AgNWs exhibit the key functions of the close connection of CoFe-LDH nanocages and the support of the directional electron transport effect in the composite catalyst inducing electrons directionally moving from CoFe-LDH to AgNWs. Meanwhile, the CoFe-LDH nanocages with ultrathin nanosheets and hollow structural properties show abundant active sites for electrocatalytic oxygen generation. The versatile AgNWs@CoFe-LDH catalyst with optimized components, enhanced directional electron transport, and synergistic effect achieves high OER performance with the overpotential of 207 mV and long-term 50 h stability at 10 mA cm-2 in an alkaline medium. Moreover, in-depth insights into the microstructure, structure-activity relationships, identification of key intermediate species, and a proton-coupled four-electron OER mechanism based on experimental discovery and theoretical calculation are also demonstrated.

Abstract
Backgrounds: The validity of heart rate variability (HRV) has been substantiated in mental workload assessments. However, cognitive tasks often coincide with physical exertion in practical mental work, but their synergic effects on HRV remains insufficiently established. The study aims were to investigate the combined effects of cognitive and physical load on autonomic nerve functions. Methods: Thirty-five healthy male subjects (aged 23.5 ± 3.3 years) were eligible and enrolled in the study. The subjects engaged in n-back cognitive tasks (1-back, 2-back, and 3-back) under three distinct physical conditions, involving isotonic contraction of the left upper limb with loads of 0 kg, 3 kg, and 5 kg. Electrocardiogram signals and cognitive task performance were recorded throughout the tasks, and post-task assessment of subjective experiences were conducted using the NASA-TLX scale. Results: The execution of n-back tasks resulted in enhanced perceptions of task-load feelings and increased reaction times among subjects, accompanied by a decline in the accuracy rate (p < 0.05). These effects were synchronously intensified by the imposition of physical load. Comparative analysis with a no-physical-load scenario revealed significant alterations in the HRV of the subjects during the cognitive task under moderate and high physical conditions. The main features were a decreased power of the high frequency component (p < 0.05) and an increased low frequency component (p < 0.05), signifying an elevation in sympathetic activity. This physiological response manifested similarly at both moderate and high physical levels. In addition, a discernible linear correlation was observed between HRV and task-load feelings, as well as task performance under the influence of physical load (p < 0.05). Conclusion: HRV can serve as a viable indicator for assessing mental workload in the context of physical activities, making it suitable for real-world mental work scenarios.

Abstract
Independent predictors of mortality and transfusion therapy in polytrauma patients from the Chinese population remain unknown. Here, we aimed to identify these predictors by retrospectively collecting and analyzing vital signs and laboratory results for 408 critically ill patients suffering from polytrauma who were treated in Affiliated Kunshan Hospital of Jiangsu University, Jiangsu Province, China from January 2020 to December 2021. We identified risk factors for mortality and transfusion therapy using logistic regression analysis. As a results, we enrolled a total of 408 polytrauma patients, with a male-to-female ratio of 2:1, a mean age of 49.02 ± 16.84 years, a mortality rate of 15.9 %, and a blood transfusion rate of 45.8 %. The multivariate logistic regression showed that decreased Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score (Odds ratio (OR) = 0.72, 95 % confidence interval (95%CI): 0.63-0.83, P < 0.001), decreased base excess (BE) (OR = 0.77, 95%CI: 0.67-0.87, P < 0.001), and increased Injury Severity Score (ISS) (OR = 1.12, 95%CI: 1.06-1.17, P < 0.001) were independent risk factors for the mortality. In addition, increased GCS score (OR = 1.17, 95%CI: 1.03-1.35, P = 0.020), increased heart rate (OR = 1.05, 95%CI: 1.04-1.07, P < 0.001), decreased systolic blood pressure (SBP) (OR = 0.97, 95%CI: 0.96-0.99, P < 0.001), increased peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) (OR = 1.10, 95%CI: 1.04-1.16, P = 0.002), decreased serum lactate (OR = 0.58, 95%CI: 0.42-0.79, P = 0.001), decreased BE (OR = 0.49, 95%CI: 0.39-0.62, P < 0.001), and increased ISS (OR = 1.25, 95%CI: 1.18-1.33, P < 0.001) were independent risk factors for blood transfusion. The area under receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs) of the model to predict mortality and blood transfusion were 0.976 (95%CI: 0.960-0.992, P < 0.001) and 0.973 (95%CI: 0.958-0.987, P < 0.001). In conclusion, decreased BE level was significantly associated with all-cause mortality in polytrauma patients. BE, ISS, and GCS might be independent important predictors for mortality and blood transfusion of polytrauma patients.

Abstract
Previous neuroimaging studies have revealed abnormal brain networks in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) in emotional processing. While any cognitive task consists of a series of stages, little is yet known about the topology of functional brain networks in MDD for these stages during emotional face recognition. To address this problem, electroencephalography (EEG)-based functional brain networks of MDD patients at different stages of facial information processing were investigated in this study. First, EEG signals were collected from 16 patients with MDD and 18 age-, gender-, and education-matched normal subjects when performing an emotional face recognition task. Second, the global field power (GFP) method was employed to divide group-averaged event-related potentials into different stages. Third, using the phase transfer entropy (PTE) approach, the brain networks of MDD patients and normal individuals were constructed for each stage in negative and positive face processing, respectively. Finally, we compared the topological properties of brain networks of each stage between the two groups using graph theory approaches. The results showed that the analyzed three stages of emotional face processing corresponded to specific neurophysiological phases, namely, visual perception, face recognition, and emotional decision-making. It was also demonstrated that depressed patients showed abnormally decreased characteristic path length at the visual perception stage of negative face recognition and normalized characteristic path length in the stage of emotional decision-making during positive face processing compared to healthy subjects. Furthermore, while both the MDD and normal groups' brain networks were found to exhibit small-world network characteristics, the brain network of patients with depression tended to be randomized. Moreover, for patients with MDD, the centro-parietal region may lose its status as a hub in the process of facial expression identification. Together, our findings suggested that altered emotional function in MDD patients might be associated with disruptions in the topological organization of functional brain networks during emotional face recognition, which further deepened our understanding of the emotion processing dysfunction underlying MDD.

Abstract
High-altitude pulmonary hypertension (HAPH) is a severe and progressive disease that can lead to right heart failure. Intermittent short-duration reoxygenation at high altitude is effective in alleviating HAPH; however, the underlying mechanisms are unclear. In the present study, a simulated 5,000-m hypoxia rat model and hypoxic cultured pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) were used to evaluate the effect and mechanisms of intermittent short-duration reoxygenation. The results showed that intermittent 3-h/per day reoxygenation (I3) effectively attenuated chronic hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension and reduced the content of H2O2 and the expression of NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) in lung tissues. In combination with I3, while the NOX inhibitor apocynin did not further alleviate HAPH, the mitochondrial antioxidant MitoQ did. Furthermore, in PASMCs, I3 attenuated hypoxia-induced PASMCs proliferation and reversed the activated HIF-1α/NOX4/PPAR-γ axis under hypoxia. Targeting this axis offset the protective effect of I3 on hypoxia-induced PASMCs proliferation. The present study is novel in revealing a new mechanism for preventing HAPH and provides insights into the optimization of intermittent short-duration reoxygenation.

Abstract
Tobacco grown in areas with high-geochemical backgrounds exhibits considerably different cadmium (Cd) bioaccumulation abilities due to regional disparities and environmental changes. However, the impact of key factors on the Cd bioaccumulation ability of tobacco grown in the karst regions with high selenium (Se) geochemical backgrounds is unclear. Herein, 365 paired rhizospheric soil-grown tobacco samples and 321 topsoil samples were collected from typical karst tobacco-growing soil in southwestern China and analyzed for Cd and Se. XGBoost was used to predict and evaluate the Cd bioaccumulation ability of tobacco and potential influencing factors. Results showed that regional geochemical characteristics, such as soil Cd and Se contents, soil type, and lithology, have the highest influence on the Cd bioaccumulation ability of tobacco, accounting for 46.5% of the overall variation. Moreover, soil Se contents in high-geochemical background areas considerably affect Cd bioaccumulation in tobacco, with a threshold for the mutual suppression effects of Cd and Se at a soil Se content of 0.8 mg/kg. According to the results of bivariate local indicators of spatial association analysis, tobacco cultivated in the central, northeast, and southeast regions of Zunyi City carries a lower risk of soil Cd contamination. This study provides new insights for managing tobacco cultivation in karst regions.

Abstract
Although cytomegalovirus (CMV) viremia/DNAemia has been associated with reduced survival after lung transplantation, its association with chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) and its phenotypes is unclear. We hypothesized that, in a modern era of CMV prophylaxis, CMV DNAemia would still remain associated with death, but also represent a risk factor for CLAD and specifically restrictive allograft syndrome (RAS)/mixed phenotype. This was a single-center retrospective cohort study of all consecutive adult, first, bilateral-/single-lung transplants done between 2010-2016, consisting of 668 patients. Risks for death/retransplantation, CLAD, or RAS/mixed, were assessed by adjusted cause-specific Cox proportional-hazards models. CMV viral load (VL) was primarily modeled as a categorical variable: undetectable, detectable to 999, 1000 to 9999, and ≥10 000 IU/mL. In multivariable models, CMV VL was significantly associated with death/retransplantation (≥10 000 IU/mL: HR = 2.65 [1.78-3.94]; P < .01), but was not associated with CLAD, whereas CMV serostatus mismatch was (D+R-: HR = 2.04 [1.30-3.21]; P < .01). CMV VL was not associated with RAS/mixed in univariable analysis. Secondary analyses with a 7-level categorical or 4-level ordinal CMV VL confirmed similar results. In conclusion, CMV DNAemia is a significant risk factor for death/retransplantation, but not for CLAD or RAS/mixed. CMV serostatus mismatch may have an impact on CLAD through a pathway independent of DNAemia.

Abstract
Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) represents a prevalent pathological phenomenon. Traditional treatment approaches primarily aim at restoring blood supply to ischemic organs, disregarding the consequent damage caused by IRI. Belonging to the class of protopanaxadiol ginsenosides that are found in Panax ginseng, ginsenoside Rd (GSRd) demonstrates notable safety alongside a diverse range of biological functions. Its active components exhibit diverse pharmacological effects, encompassing anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, neuroprotective, cardiovascular-protective, and immune-regulatory properties, making it a promising candidate for addressing multiple medical conditions. GSRd shields against I/R injury by employing crucial cellular mechanisms, including the attenuation of oxidative stress, reduction of inflammation, promotion of cell survival signaling pathways, and inhibition of apoptotic pathways. Additionally, GSRd regulates mitochondrial function, maintains calcium homeostasis, and modulates the expression of genes involved in I/R injury. This review seeks to consolidate the pharmacological mechanism of action of GSRd within the context of IRI. Our objective is to contribute to the advancement of GSRd-related pharmaceuticals and provide novel insights for clinicians involved in developing IRI treatment strategies.

Abstract
Climate dictates wildfire activity around the world. But East and Southeast Asia are an apparent exception as fire-activity variation there is unrelated to climatic variables. In subtropical China, fire activity decreased by 80% between 2003 and 2020 amid increased fire risks globally. Here, we assessed the fire regime, vegetation structure, fuel flammability and their interactions across subtropical Hubei, China. We show that tree basal area (TBA) and fuel flammability explained 60% of fire-frequency variance. Fire frequency and fuel flammability, in turn, explained 90% of TBA variance. These results reveal a novel system of scrubland-forest stabilized by vegetation-fire feedbacks. Frequent fires promote the persistence of derelict scrubland through positive vegetation-fire feedbacks; in forest, vegetation-fire feedbacks are negative and suppress fire. Thus, we attribute the decrease in wildfire activity to reforestation programs that concurrently increase forest coverage and foster negative vegetation-fire feedbacks that suppress wildfire.

Abstract
Background Endometrial carcinoma ranks as the second most widespread malignancy affecting the reproductive system in females. Effective prognostic biomarkers are required to further improve survival rates for patients. Single-minded homolog 2 (SIM2) is known to participate in neurogenesis as a transcription factor. However, the potential role of SIM2 in endometrial carcinoma remains elusive. Methods Multiple public databases, including TIMER2.0, GEIPA2, UALCAN, LinkedOmics, BioGRID, DAVID and cBioPortal, were used to investigate SIM2 mRNA expression, SIM2-associated genes, PPI network, functional enrichment analysis, SIM2 gene alterations and methylation. The association between SIM2 expression and immune cell infiltrates was explored using GSVA. The effects of gene alterations and methylation on patient survival and CD8+T infiltration were examined using GSCA. Moreover, the prognostic potential of SIM2 was evaluated using COX regression, ROC curves and a nomogram model. Finally, the differential expression and function of SIM2 in UCEC were explored using qPCR, WB, CCK8 and Transwell assays. Results Our findings revealed the heightened expression of SIM2 in endometrial carcinoma, and that its DNA methylation and CNV alterations were correlated with immune infiltration and patients' prognosis. Additionally, functional enrichment revealed the involvement of SIM2 in transcription regulation and signal transduction. Moreover, we performed cell-based experiments to corroborate the oncogenic function of SIM2 in facilitating cell proliferation, migration and invasion. Conclusion Collectively, these results suggest that SIM2 holds promise as both a potential prognostic indicator and a viable treatment target for endometrial carcinoma.

Abstract
Exercise training can stimulate the formation of fatty-acid-oxidizing slow-twitch skeletal muscle fibers, which are inversely correlated with obesity, but the molecular mechanism underlying this transformation requires further elucidation. Here, we report that the downregulation of the mitochondrial disulfide relay carrier CHCHD4 by exercise training decreases the import of TP53-regulated inhibitor of apoptosis 1 (TRIAP1) into mitochondria, which can reduce cardiolipin levels and promote VDAC oligomerization in skeletal muscle. VDAC oligomerization, known to facilitate mtDNA release, can activate cGAS-STING/NFKB innate immune signaling and downregulate MyoD in skeletal muscle, thereby promoting the formation of oxidative slow-twitch fibers. In mice, CHCHD4 haploinsufficiency is sufficient to activate this pathway, leading to increased oxidative muscle fibers and decreased fat accumulation with aging. The identification of a specific mediator regulating muscle fiber transformation provides an opportunity to understand further the molecular underpinnings of complex metabolic conditions such as obesity and could have therapeutic implications.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effects of Sonic hedgehog (Shh) gene-modified bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on graft-induced retinal gliosis and retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) survival in diabetic mice. METHODS Bone marrow-derived MSCs were genetically modified with the Shh gene to generate a stably transfected cell line of Shh-modified MSCs (MSC-Shh). Intravitreal injections of MSC-Shh and green fluorescent protein-modified MSCs (MSC-Gfp; control) were administered in diabetic mice. After 4wk, the effects of MSC-Shh on retinal gliosis were evaluated using fundus photography, and markers of gliosis were examined by immunofluorescence and Western blotting. The neurotrophic factors expression and RGCs survival in the host retina were evaluated using Western blotting and immunofluorescence. The mechanisms underlying the effects of MSC-Shh was investigated. RESULTS A significant reduction of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) was observed after intravitreal injection of MSC-Shh compared to MSC-Gfp. Significant downregulation of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) was demonstrated in the host retina after MSC-Shh administration compared to MSC-Gfp. The extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), protein kinase B (AKT) and phosphatidylin-ositol-3-kinase (PI3K) pathways were significantly downregulated after MSC-Shh administration compared to MSC-Gfp. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) levels were significantly increased in the host retina, and RGCs loss was significantly prevented after MSC-Shh administration. CONCLUSION MSC-Shh administration reduces graft-induced reactive gliosis following intravitreal injection in diabetic mice. The ERK1/2, AKT and PI3K pathways are involved in this process. MSC-Shh also increases the levels of neurotrophic factors in the host retina and promoted RGCs survival in diabetic mice.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the standardized performance of a FISH probe before clinical detection. Methods: The probe sensitivity and specificity of ETV6/RUNX1 were analyzed via interphase and metaphase FISH in 20 discarded healthy bone marrow samples. The threshold system of the probe was established using an inverse beta distribution, and an interpretation standard was established. Finally, a parallel-controlled polymerase chain reaction detection study was conducted on 286 bone marrow samples from patients at our hospital. The clinical sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic coincidence rate of ETV6/RUNX1 FISH detection were analyzed, and the diagnostic consistency of the two methods was analyzed by the kappa test. Results: The probe sensitivity and specificity of the ETV6/RUNX1 probe were 98.47% and 100%, respectively. When 50, 100, and 200 cells were counted, the typical positive signal pattern cutoffs were 5.81%, 2.95%, and 1.49%, respectively, and the atypical positive signal pattern cutoffs were 13.98%, 9.75%, and 6.26%, respectively. The clinical sensitivity of FISH was 96.1%, clinical specificity was 99.6%, diagnostic coincidence rate was 99.00%, diagnostic consistency test kappa value was 0.964, and P value was <0.001. Conclusion: For FISH probes without a national medical device registration certificate, standardized performance verification and methodology performance verification can be performed using laboratory developed test verification standards to ensure a reliable and accurate reference basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Objective: To describe clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes of pediatric epiretinal membranes (ERMs) without specific etiologies. Methods: Medical data of a cohort of pediatric patients (≤14 years) who had ERMs without specific etiologies, underwent surgical removal from January 2019 to September 2021, and were followed up for at least 12 months were retrospectively reviewed. Age at presentation, chief complaints, color fundus photographs, optical coherence tomographic images, preoperative and postoperative visual acuities, anatomical changes, and postoperative complications were assessed. Results: There were 14 patients (17 eyes), including 5 females (6 eyes) and 9 males (11 eyes). The mean age at surgery was 6.31±2.91 years, and the follow-up duration was 17.3±9.5 months. Eight patients were found to have low vision in the school physical examination. Fifteen eyes had an appearance of cellophane macular reflex on fundus images. On optical coherence tomographic images, 10 eyes had"taco"folds, and 7 eyes had"ripple"folds. Five eyes had ellipsoid zone disruptions, while 12 eyes had ellipsoid zone integrity. The preoperative and postoperative best-corrected visual acuities in logMAR were 0.532±0.302 and 0.340±0.298. One patient suffered traumatic cataract and secondary retinal detachment postoperatively, and after further vitrectomy, the retina became attached. Conclusion: Pediatric ERMs without specific etiologies were mostly found in school-age children with cellophane macular reflex and"taco"folds. Vitrectomy may result in both potential visual acuity and macular anatomical improvements.

Abstract
A smart coating integrating functions of corrosion inhibition, self-healing, and corrosion-sensing was developed based on a polyaniline (PANI) microsphere-loading corrosion sensing probe (8-hydroxyquinone, 8-HQ). The PANI microsphere was prepared in a facile one-pot process via the combination of photopolymerization and an emulsion template. The 8-HQ-loaded PANI microsphere achieved three synergetic effects simultaneously: corrosion inhibition, corrosion sensing, and photothermal self-healing abilities. Benefiting from the corrosion inhibition effect of PANI, the coating with the PANI microsphere exhibited significantly enhanced anticorrosion behavior. After soaking in NaCl solution for 35 days, its impedance was maintained at 1.26 × 109 Ω·cm2, nearly 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of pure resin coating. Meanwhile, the encapsulated 8-HQ exhibited pH-responsive release behavior thanks to the pH-responsive characteristics of PANI, which could chelate with Al3+ ions to form 8-HQ-Al3+ coordinates with a conspicuous fluorescence, achieving a real-time corrosion diagnosing function. Moreover, benefiting from the photothermal property of PANI, the coating with the PANI microsphere displayed rapid crack closure behavior under NIR light irradiation, and the healing efficiency could reach 83.56% under near-infrared irradiation. This work presents an innovative strategy for fabricating an intelligent self-healing, self-reporting, and anticorrosion coating, which provides a new vision to prolong the lifetime of metals.

Toxicity of the disinfectant benzalkonium chloride (C 14) towards cyanobacterium Microcystis results from its impact on the photosynthetic apparatus and cell metabolism. Abstract
Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are commonly used in a variety of consumer and commercial products, typically as a component of disinfectants. During the COVID-19 pandemic, QACs became one of the primary agents utilized to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 virus on surfaces. However, the ecotoxicological effects of QACs upon aquatic organisms have not been fully assessed. In this study, we examined the effects of a widely used QAC (benzalkonium chloride-C14, BAC-14) on two toxigenic Microcystis strains and one non-toxigenic freshwater Microcystis strain and carried out an analysis focused on primary, adaptive and compensatory stress responses at apical (growth and photosynthesis) and metabolic levels. This analysis revealed that the two toxic Microcystis strains were more tolerant than the non-toxic strain, with 96 hr-EC50 values of 0.70, 0.76, and 0.38 mg/L BAC-14 for toxigenic M. aeruginosa FACHB-905, toxigenic M. aeruginosa FACHB-469, and non-toxigenic M. wesenbergii FACHB-908, respectively. The photosynthetic activities of the Microcystis, assessed via Fv/Fm values, were significantly suppressed under 0.4 mg/L BAC-14. Furthermore, this analysis revealed that BAC-14 altered 14, 12, and 8 metabolic pathways in M. aeruginosa FACHB-905, M. aeruginosa FACHB-469, and M. wesenbergii FACHB-908, respectively. It is noteworthy that BAC-14 enhanced the level of extracellular microcystin production in the toxigenic Microcystis strains, although cell growth was not significantly affected. Collectively, these data show that BAC-14 disrupted the physiological and metabolic status of Microcystis cells and stimulated the production and release of microcystin, which could result in damage to aquatic systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are no drugs on the market that can reverse or slow Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression. A protease-resistant Cholecystokinin (CCK) analogue used in this study is based on the basic structure of CCK, which further increases the stability of the peptide fragment and prolongs its half-life in vivo. We observed a neuroprotective effect of CCK-8L in APPswe/PS1dE9 (APP/PS1) AD mice. However, its corresponding mechanisms still need to be elucidated. OBJECTIVE This study examined CCK-8L's neuroprotective effects in enhancing cognitive impairment by regulating mitochondrial dynamics through AMPK/Drp1 pathway in the APP/PS1 AD mice. METHODS Behavioural tests are applied to assess competence in cognitive functions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was performed to observe the ultrastructure of mitochondria of hippocampal neurons, Immunofluorescent staining was employed to assay for Aβ1-42, APP, Adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and dynamin-related protein1 (Drp1). CRISPR/Cas9 was utilized for targeted knockout of the CCKB receptor (CCKBR) in the mouse APP/PS1 hippocampal CA1 region. A model of lentiviral vector-mediated overexpression of APP in N2a cells was constructed. RESULTS In vivo, experiments revealed that CCK analogue and liraglutide significantly alleviated cognitive deficits in APP/PS1 mice, reduced Aβ1-42 expression, and ameliorated l damage, which is associated with CCKBR activation in the hippocampal CA1 region of mice. In vitro tests showed that CCK inhibited mitochondrial fission and promoted fusion through AMPK/Drp1 pathway. CONCLUSIONS CCK analogue ameliorates cognitive deficits and regulates mitochondrial dynamics by activating the CCKB receptor and the AMPK/Drp1 pathway in AD mice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the causal relationship between testosterone (BT) levels and Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk and to quantify the role of obesity and lipid metabolism as potential mediators. METHODS We used a two-sample, two-step MR to determine:1) the causal effect of BT levels on AD; 2) the causal effect of two lipid metabolites, obesity and LDLc on AD; and 3) the mediating effects of these metabolites. Pooled data for BT levels and lipid metabolism were obtained from the UK Biobank. AD data were obtained from the Alzheimer's Disease Project International Genomics Consortium, FinnGen Consortium, and UK Biobank study. Effect estimates from external genome-wide association study (GWAS) pooled statistics were obtained using inverse variance-weighted (IVW) MR analysis. RESULTS Higher levels of BT were associated with a reduced risk of AD (odds ratio [OR] 0.9992, 95% CI 0.9985-0.9998, P = 0.019), and there was a negative correlation with LDLc (OR 0.9208, 95% CI 0.8569-0.9895, P = 0.024) and obesity class 2 (OC2) (OR 0.7445, 95% CI 0.5873-0.9437, P = 0.014). Conversely, there was a positive correlation between LDLc (OR 1.0014, 95% CI 1.0000-1.0029, P = 0.043) and OC2 (OR 1.0005, 95% CI 1.0001-1.0009, P = 0.003) and AD. Mediation analysis showed that the indirect effect of BT levels on AD was achieved through LDLc and OC2, which accounted for 17% and 17% of the total effect, respectively. CONCLUSION Our study identified a causal role of BT levels in LDLc and OC2. BT levels may affect AD through LDLc and OC2 metabolic processes.

Abstract
Lithium manganese oxides are considered as promising cathodes for lithium-ion batteries due to their low cost and available resources. Layered LiMnO2 with orthorhombic or monoclinic structure has attracted tremendous interest thanks to its ultrahigh theoretical capacity (285 mAh g-1 ) that almost doubles that of commercialized spinel LiMn2 O4 (148 mAh g-1 ). However, LiMnO2 undergoes phase transition to spinel upon cycling cause by the Jahn-Teller effect of the high-spin Mn3+ . In addition, soluble Mn2+ generates from the disproportionation of Mn3+ and oxygen release during electrochemical processes may cause poor cycle performance. To address the critical issues, tremendous efforts have been made. This paper provides a general review of layered LiMnO2 materials including their crystal structures, synthesis methods, structural/elemental modifications, and electrochemical performance. In brief, first the crystal structures of LiMnO2 and synthetic methods have been summarized. Subsequently, modification strategies for improving electrochemical performance are comprehensively reviewed, including element doping to suppress its phase transition, surface coating to resist manganese dissolution into the electrolyte and impede surface reactions, designing LiMnO2 composites to improve electronic conductivity and Li+ diffusion, and finding compatible electrolytes to enhance safety. At last, future efforts on the research frontier and practical application of LiMnO2 have been discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Standard low-resolution electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA) was used to accurately detect EEG changes in mental fatigue of air traffic controllers (ATCo) under a simulated air traffic control (ATC) task. We explored the changes in standard current density, activated cortical intensity, and brain source location. METHODS The participants were instructed to use the tower flight command simulation training system for three hours of uninterrupted ATC task. The 3-hour EEG signal was divided into four stages: task start, 1st hour, 2nd hour, and task end. Each stage was preprocessed for 3 minutes to explore the EEG changes and then processed by sLORETA in a statistical non-parametric mapping analysis. RESULTS The current density distribution of δ and α oscillations differed significantly during the four tasks, while θ, β and γ oscillations did not. Changes in δ oscillations of the brain during mental fatigue were detected mainly in the postcentral gyrus (BA2 and BA3), precentral gyrus (BA4 and BA6), inferior temporal gyrus (BA20), and superior temporal gyrus (BA38). The α oscillations were found mainly decreased in the postcentral gyrus (BA2) and inferior parietal lobule (BA40) when the task was in progress compared with the end of the task. CONCLUSION The superior temporal gyrus and somatosensory cortex were the main activated cortical regions during the simulated ATC task. The α and δ oscillations showed contrasting activity during simulated ATC task, which might reflect the release of task-relevant brain's areas from inhibition and enhance the neural activity.

Abstract
The value of combined detection of neutrophil apolipoprotein (HNL), serum amyloid A (SAA), procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in the differential diagnosis of bacterial and viral infectious diseases. A retrospective study was conducted to collect the clinical data of infected patients and healthy people in the clinical department of Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital from September to December in 2022. 100 patients with confirmed infection were divided into bacterial infection group (n=50) and virus infection group (n=50), and 50 healthy people were selected as control group (n=50). Fasting venous blood was collected at the initial stage of admission or on the day of physical examination. HNL was detected by double antibody sandwich method, SAA and CRP were detected by nephelometry, and PCT was detected by chemiluminescence method. The efficacy of infection markers in the differential diagnosis of bacterial infection and viral infection in infected patients was evaluated. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of HNL, SAA, PCT and CRP in bacterial and viral infectious diseases; Logistic regression was used to analyze the influence of each index on the diagnostic efficiency. The results showed that the levels of HNL (126.60±33.32) ng/ml, PCT (28.02±11.37) ng/ml and CRP (36.13±14.37) mg/L in bacterial infection group were significantly higher than those of HNL (47.72±15.94) ng/ml, PCT (1.27±0.40) ng/ml, CRP (18.77±10.66) mg/L in virus group and HNL (38.21±12.53) ng/ml, PCT (0.38±0.12) ng/ml and CRP (4.13±1.07) mg/L in control group. The level of HNL increased most significantly (F=89.228, P<0.05). The area under ROC curve (AUC) from large to small was HNL+SAA+PCT+CRP (0.976), HNL (0.907), PCT (0.885), CRP (0.856), SAA (0.790), SAA/CRP (0.733). The level of SAA/CRP in virus infection group (94.05±3.75) was significantly higher than that in bacteria group (17.70±3.69) and control group (3.89±1.50) (F=84.005, P<0.05). The area under ROC curve (AUC) from large to small was HNL+SAA+PCT+CRP (0.986), SAA/CRP (0.956), SAA (0.878), HNL (0.768), CRP (0.742), PCT (0.730). In conclusion, HNL has the best auxiliary diagnostic efficacy in bacterial infection, followed by PCT; SAA/CRP has the best auxiliary diagnostic efficacy in viral infection, followed by SAA; the combined detection of serum HNL, SAA, PCT and CRP may be helpful for the differential diagnosis of bacterial and viral infections.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diagnosing lung injury is a challenge in lung transplantation. It has been unclear if a single biopsy specimen is truly representative of the entire organ. Our objective was to investigate lung inflammatory biomarkers using human lung tissue biopsies and ex vivo lung perfusion perfusate. METHODS Eight human donor lungs declined for transplantation were air inflated, flash frozen, and partitioned from apex to base. Biopsies were then sampled throughout the lung. Perfusate was sampled from 4 lung lobes in 8 additional donor lungs subjected to ex vivo lung perfusion. The levels of interleukin-6, interleukin-8, interleukin-10, and interleukin-1β were measured using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction from lung biopsies and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay from ex vivo lung perfusion perfusate. RESULTS The median intra-biopsy equal-variance P value was .50 for messenger RNA biomarkers in tissue biopsies. The median intra-biopsy coefficient of variance was 18%. In donors with no apparent focal injuries, the biopsies in each donor showed no difference in various lung slices, with a coefficient of variance of 20%. The exception was biopsies from the lingula and injured focal areas that demonstrated larger differences. Cytokines in ex vivo lung perfusion perfusate showed minimal variation among different lobes (coefficient of variance = 4.9%). CONCLUSIONS Cytokine gene expression in lung biopsies was consistent, and the biopsy analysis reflects the whole lung, except when specimens were collected from the lingula or an area of focal injury. Ex vivo lung perfusion perfusate also provides a representative measurement of lung inflammation from the draining lobe. These results will reassure clinicians that a lung biopsy or an ex vivo lung perfusion perfusate sample can be used to inform donor lung selection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to determine whether new European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFC) equation is more applicable than Asian-modified CKD-EPI equation in clinical practice, having a higher accuracy in estimating GFR in our external CKD population. METHODS We calculated estimated GFREKFC and GFRCKD-EPI independently using the EKFC and Asian-modified CKD-EPI formulas, respectively. The clinical diagnostic performance of the two equations was assessed and compared by median bias, precision, accuracy (P30) and so on, using 99mTc-DTPA dual plasma sample clearance method as a reference method for GFR measurement (mGFR). The equation that met the following targets was superior: (1) median bias within ± 3 mL/min/1.73 m2; (2) P30 > 75%; and (3) better precision and 95% limits of agreement in Bland-Altman analysis. RESULTS Totally, 160 CKD patients were recruited in our external cohort. GFREKFC was highly related to mGFR, with a regression equation of GFREKFC=mGFR × 0.87 + 5.27. Compared with the Asian-modified CKD-EPI equation, EKFC equation demonstrated a wider median bias (-1.64 vs. 0.84 mL/min/1.73 m2, p < 0.01) that was within 3 mL/min/1.73 m2 and not clinically meaningful. Furthermore, the precision (12.69 vs. 12.72 mL/min/1.73 m2, p = 0.42), 95% limits of agreement in Bland-Altman analysis (42.4 vs. 44.4 mL/min/1.73 m2) and incorrect reclassification index of the two target equations were almost identical. Although, EKFC equation had a slightly better P30 (80.0% vs. 74.4%, p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The overall performance of EKFC equation is acceptable. There is no clinically meaningful difference in the performance of the Asian-modified CKD-EPI and EKFC equations within the limits imposed by the small sample size.

Abstract
In traditional soil heavy metal (HM) pollution assessment, spatial interpolation analysis is often carried out on the limited sampling points in the study area to get the overall status of heavy metal pollution. Unfortunately, in many machine learning spatial information enhancement algorithms, the additional spatial information introduced fails to reflect the hierarchical heterogeneity of the study area. Therefore, we designed hierarchical regionalization labels based on three interpolation techniques (inverse distance weight, ordinary kriging, and trend surface interpolation) as new spatial covariates for a machine learning (ML) model. It was demonstrated that regional spatial information improved the prediction performance of the model (R2 > 0.7). On the basis of the prediction results, the status of HM pollution in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region was evaluated: cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) were the most serious pollutants in the PRD (the point overstandard rates are 18.77% and 12.95%, respectively). The analysis of index importance and bivariate local indicators of spatial association (LISA) shows that the key factors affecting the spatial distribution of heavy metals are geographical and climatic conditions [namely, altitude, humidity index, and normalized vegetation difference index (NDVI)] and some industrial activities (such as metal processing, printing and dyeing, and electronics industry). This study develops a novel approach to improve existing spatial interpolation techniques, which will enable more precise and scientific soil environmental management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The acid/molybdate assay performed on the Beckman Coulter AU5821 could be subject to paraprotein interference, which potentially results in spurious hyperphosphatemia. We attempted to find a reliable solution to eliminate paraprotein interference in laboratory test results and discuss the causes of paraprotein interference. METHODS We observed 50 multiple myeloma patients with serum paraproteins. We used the trichloroacetic acid (TCA) deproteinizing method to confirm that paraproteins indeed interfered with phosphate detection in the serum acid/molybdate assay. Furthermore, we used the dry chemical method (Vitros 5.1 FS, Johnson) and deionized water (H2O), normal saline (NS), and healthy human serum as alternative diluents. We assessed the clinical acceptability of the 4 methods by evaluating a bias percentage (bias%) lower than 10% under the premise of TCA treatment as a serum phosphate reference method. RESULTS In total, comparing the results of the TCA treatment on the Beckman Coulter AU5821, 3/50 (6%) multiple myeloma patients exhibited phosphate pseudo-elevation (bias% >10%). Additionally, we found pseudo-hypophosphate only in immunoglobulin (Ig)G-kappa paraprotein samples, and all were above 50 g/L. The bias% between TCA and dry chemical method for the 3 patients was below 10%. The maximum acceptable dilutions for patient 22 were 8-fold H2O, 4-fold H2O , and 2-fold serum; those for patient 45 were 16-fold H2O, 16-fold H2O, and 2-fold serum. However, the bias% of patient 40 was beyond the acceptable range in all 3 dilution groups. CONCLUSION High concentrations of IgG kappa-type paraproteins are more likely to interfere with serum phosphorous detection. Both the TCA and dry chemical method can effectively eliminate paraprotein interference.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Kawasaki disease (KD) is considered the main contributor to acquired heart diseases in developed countries. However, the precise pathogenesis of KD remains unclear. Neutrophils play roles in KD. This study aimed to select hub genes in neutrophils in acute KD. METHODS mRNA microarray of neutrophils from four acute KD patients and three healthy controls was performed to screen differentially expressed mRNAs (DE-mRNAs). DE-mRNAs were analyzed and predicted by Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways, and protein-protein interaction networks. Real time-PCR was finally conducted to confirm the reliability and validity of the expression level of DE-mRNAs from blood samples of healthy controls and KD patients in both acute and convalescent stage. RESULTS A total of 1950 DE-mRNAs including 1287 upregulated and 663 downregulated mRNAs were identified. GO and KEGG analyses revealed the DE-mRNAs were mainly enriched in the regulation of transcription from RNA polymerase II promoter, apoptotic process, intracellular signal transduction, protein phosphorylation, protein transport, metabolic pathways, carbon metabolism, lysosome, apoptosis, pyrimidine metabolism, alzheimer disease, prion disease, sphingolipid metabolism, huntington disease, glucagon signaling pathway, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, pyruvate metabolism, sphingolipid signaling pathway, and peroxisome. Twenty hub DE-mRNAs were selected including GAPDH, GNB2L1, PTPRC, GART, HIST2H2AC, ACTG1, H2AFX, CREB1, ATP5A1, ENO1, RAC2, PKM, BCL2L1, ATP5B, MRPL13, SDHA, TLR4, RUVBL2, TXNRD1, and ITGAM. The real-time PCR results showed that BCL2L1 and ITGAM mRNA were upregulated in acute KD and were normalized in the convalescent stage. CONCLUSIONS These findings may improve our understanding of neutrophils in KD. Key Points • Neutrophilic BCL2L1 and ITGAM mRNA were first reported to be correlated with the pathogenic mechanism of KD.

Abstract
Wearable exoskeleton robots can promote the rehabilitation of patients with physical dysfunction. And improving human-computer interaction performance is a significant challenge for exoskeleton robots. The traditional feature extraction process based on surface Electromyography(sEMG) is complex and requires manual intervention, making real-time performance difficult to guarantee. In this study, we propose an end-to-end method to predict human knee joint angles based on sEMG signals using a tightly coupled convolutional transformer (TCCT) model. We first collected sEMG signals from 5 healthy subjects. Then, the envelope was extracted from the noise-removed sEMG signal and used as the input to the model. Finally, we developed the TCCT model to predict the knee joint angle after 100 ms. For the prediction performance, we used the Root Mean Square Error(RMSE), Pearson Correlation Coefficient(CC), and Adjustment R2 as metrics to evaluate the error between the actual knee angle and the predicted knee angle. The results show that the model can predict the human knee angle quickly and accurately. The mean RMSE, Adjustment R2, and (CC) values of the model are 3.79°, 0.96, and 0.98, respectively, which are better than traditional deep learning models such as Informer (4.14, 0.95, 0.98), CNN (5.56, 0.89, 0.96) and CNN-BiLSTM (3.97, 0.95, 0.98). In addition, the prediction time of our proposed model is only 11.67 ± 0.67 ms, which is less than 100 ms. Therefore, the real-time and accuracy of the model can meet the continuous prediction of human knee joint angle in practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We have recently developed a new Coronary Artery Tree description and Lesion EvaluaTion (CatLet) angiographic scoring system. Our preliminary studies have demonstrated its superiority over the the Synergy between percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with Taxus and Cardiac Surgery (SYNTAX) score with respect to outcome predictions for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. The current study hypothesized that the residual CatLet (rCatLet) score predicts clinical outcomes for AMI patients and that a combination with the three clinical variables (CVs)-age, creatinine, and ejection fraction, will enhance its predicting values. METHODS The rCatLet score was calculated retrospectively in 308 consecutively enrolled patients with AMI. Primary endpoint, major adverse cardiac or cerebrovascular events (MACCE) including all-cause mortality, non-fatal AMI, transient ischemic attack/stroke, and ischemia-driven repeat revascularization, was stratified according to rCatLet score tertiles: rCatLet_low ≤3, rCatLet_mid 4-11, and rCatLet_top ≥12, respectively. Cross-validation confirmed a reasonably good agreement between the observed and predicted risks. RESULTS Of 308 patients analyzed, the rates of MACCE, all-cause death, and cardiac death were 20.8%, 18.2%, and 15.3%, respectively. Kaplan-Meier curves for all endpoints showed increasing outcome events with the increasing tertiles of the rCatLet score, with P values <0.001 on trend test. For MACCE, all-cause death, and cardiac death, the area under the curves (AUCs) of the rCatLet score were 0.70 (95% confidence intervals [CI]: 0.63-0.78), 0.69 (95% CI: 0.61-0.77), and 0.71 (95% CI: 0.63-0.79), respectively; the AUCs of the CVs-adjusted rCatLet score models were 0.83 (95% CI: 0.78-0.89), 0.87 (95% CI: 0.82-0.92), and 0.89 (95% CI: 0.84-0.94), respectively. The performance of CVs-adjusted rCatLet score was significantly better than the stand-alone rCatLet score in terms of outcome predictions. CONCLUSION The rCatLet score has a predicting value for clinical outcomes for AMI patients and the incorporation of the three CVs into the rCatLet score will enhance its predicting ability. Abstract
Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) is a critical optical parameter that quantifies the degree of light attenuation by aerosols and serves as a fundamental indicator of atmospheric quality. Therefore, accurate quantification and retrieval of AOD is crucial for relevant studies. However, current satellite-based AOD retrieval algorithms suffer from inapplicability under low-light conditions, limiting the development of nighttime AOD retrieval. Under this context, we proposed a novel algorithm, namely Simultaneous Consideration of Artificial and Natural light Sources (SCANS), to obtain nighttime AOD. The core of the SCANS algorithm is considering the synergy of both the natural and artificial light sources to obtain nighttime AOD by integrating atmospheric radiative transfer simulation into an extinction method and performing multiple iterations. SCANS was applied to the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB) and the retrieved nighttime AOD was validated with in-situ measurements from five AERONET sites. Results indicate that the Mean Bias Errors (MBEs) of the retrieved nighttime AOD range from 0.0 to 0.08 and the corresponding Root Mean Square Errors (RMSEs) range from 0.11 to 0.17, which exhibit better accuracy than that of the nighttime MERRA-2 AOD. We further compared the retrieved nighttime AOD with the corresponding Air Quality Index (AQI) measurements at six environment monitoring stations and obtained high correlation coefficients (i.e., ranging from 0.733 to 0.940), indicating SCANS's reliability and high accuracy. The proposed SCANS algorithm can effectively obtain nighttime AOD with high quality, thereby advancing research on the diurnal variation of crucial Earth's key elements.
